Reviews (page 12 of 13)
Rating a 3 since the inclusion of this album is absolutely redundant - I already got "Folsom Prison"! Do we need to listen to Johnny Cash playing every prison in America? This album also seems to have a worse sound mix than "Folsom".
Not as good as Folsom Prison
Live stuff isn’t usually my thing but this is classic Cash at his best. He’s got a great sound and you can really feel his performance. It’s a 4.5/5 for me.
Interesting banter …
bants behind bars with the man in black
It's another live Johnny Cash album, what else is there to say? It's a typical Cash performance, he really plays it to his rough and rowdy hardened criminal audience like he's one of them. You've got his deep gravelly voice that lends all of his songs so much authenticity and his easy self-assured delivery of every song, it's exactly what's expected of him. It's fine, but it's not exciting, and I don't think it's his best live prison album. Folsom is better.
Not a bad live album but still it’s live and pulls back on how good it could be. Cash was famous for his prison concerts and this one is solid. Kinda lame he plays San Quentin twice and the album is pretty short. Overall it’s good and this is ok. 6.0/10
love a boy named sue
Johnny Cash is the kind of jungle cat that licks his balls and then kisses your neck. He's a rough-riding cowboy who will fuck your mum and make her cry. I hate him, but i love him. FUCK ME JOHNNY!
Is a pretty good album, personally i dont like live version but this one was like connecting with the tracks
Johnny Cash plays his hits with a new classic "San Quentin." His performance is a bit dull but I appreciate the tense connection between him and the prisoners (feels much more lively than Folsom), although the rowdy nature shrouds the actual music, and I found the stories in "Darlin Companion" to be disruptive (I also didn't like the song itself). This isn't an album I'll play much often again in my life, as I'd take At Folsom Prison any day. I also didn't like the anticlimatic finish, but I did get a laugh out of it. But there's a lot to like here, and of course, all the album merits aside, this is Johnny Cash: one of the best country artists to have ever existed. And it is due to his strong songwriting, lyrics, and vocals that I can say this was an enjoyable listen, and I wish I was part of the crowd, even if I'd had to kill a man to see it.
Good album. I liked the banter. I've never cared much for Johnny Cash but this is decent. 3/5
As far as Cash's albums go, it's not nearly as great for the music, as it is for chaotic fun of the performance itself. The whole show is resplendently defiant and yet Johnny remains endearingly charismatic to everyone involved. What I appreciate very specifically is how Johnny shows deference for the humanity of the inmates, especially in the stage banter between the songs.
More about the situation than the tunes.
Pretty good. Interesting setting
Country
I like this one more than Folsom at least. He's dialed down his over the top voice a bit and the instrumentation is a bit more energetic and exciting. Still isn't my thing terribly but I won't complain about it being on.
Johnny Cash invents a whole new genre - country prison comedy albums - and at least two (two!) of those albums feature on this list! One was enough.
I think I prefer the At Folsom Prison album from this list but still a great concept. This one feels a bit more travelling comedy show. Fave: San Quentin just for the crowd response.
This is an album I’ve always heard about but have never listened to.
Gritty album from the classic J Cash!!
I know Alex is spinning in his not-yet-grave at getting another live album. Johnny Cash is one of a select few artists I would accept it for, even though this isn't even his signature live album. He's always got a great energy performing these songs for prisoners, that's I think why his live albums deserve some shine. It's not some guy at Whositwhatsit arena, it's the Man in Black performing at correctional facilities for the downtrodden dregs of society. I definitely enjoyed visiting hours. Favorite tracks: Starkville City Jail, A Boy Named Sue, Folsom Prison Blues, San Quentin Reprise. Album art: Just a headshot of Johnny, but as far as live album covers go this one's pretty good and a tad artsy. Nothing special though. 3.5/5
walk the line is great, folsom prison sadly quite shortened.
Good stuff, not as good as his other stuff but I like
A nice listen Johnny Cash is unfathomably cool and based Is there a single celebrity from this century that is as cool as Johnny Cash was? The answer is emphatically no
Just classic Cash but in my opinion not some of his best songs
Sure is a Johnny Cash playing to a prison album.
Not as good as folsom.
Prefer At Folsom Prison or the Rick Rubin produced American Series
it was good
hyped up the crowd very well but tunes were standard country shit
It was fine, he was a funny guy
This was certainly an interesting venture, with some good live instrumentation and the odd charismatic line. Although sometimes I felt too much of this was him talking which granted it is a live performance, there's only about 34 mins of recording and a large chunk is him not playing. 7/10
Its allright.
Seems an odd choice for inclusion given there's only a handful of songs and there's even a better prison album available....but....imagine a band performing at Strangeways these days!
You can feel the energy in the room in this recording, particularly during 'San Quentin'. Glad they included Cash addressing the audience between songs, but the heavy editing down of the setlist (to fit vinyl) and bleeping of profanities detracts somewhat. 3.5/5
many meh intermisions. live album.
Klassiker.
prison man
Amazing live performance; culturally questionable- like trying to identify with prisoners/criminals yet you're Johnny Cash dude...could be humanizing for San Quentin's inmates.
Compared to Folsom, this one fell a little flat to me. A Boy Named Sue is fun.
When I saw this I thought, hmm, a live album? But this one actually has an interesting context, and it's fun to listen to the bits where Cash and the other performers talk to the audience. Full disclosure: I didn't sit through the whole thing.
I prefer Folsom
3.5 Not my genre, but probably the best out of it
Fun for the story, boring music
So so long. Live albums are neat in a sense, but not something that I want most of the time.
Not bad, but whole album at once was a bit boring
I listened to the 'legacy' edition as per the album cover photo even though it's a 2006 version and possibly not the 'original' album that made the 1001 list. I think this was one of those albums I listened to once or twice because I'd never listened to it but it has the reputation. I know it's a live album but there's a lot of talking.... it would be better if it was tighter overall rather than being something more akin to a historical artifact. The legacy version is 1 hr 40 minutes, more than an hour longer than the 34 minute original (even if it doe have San Quentin played twice in a row). Also the crop of the photos for the Legacy version is pretty terrible and the orig cover photo wasn't that great to start with. I think this is the problem with all the expanded/box sets that became a thing, so much is unecessary and doesn't add a lot. After a listen or two you just end up skipping all the filler. Plus it often detracts from the original album. I'd give it 2.5 stars overall if I could, more if they edited it better.
Debuting two songs in front of a bunch of prisoners? Of course he does, because he's Johnny fuckin' Cash. Not quite as good as At Folsom, but still pretty great.
While the selection and quality of songs on 'Folsom' is better, the banter between Cash and the inmates here really sells the authenticity of these performances.
Great banter from June carter. That song by the stalter boys is classic
It's alright. You didn't have to play the same song two times in a row though. 6/10
Another artist that I’ve never given much listening time to. An interesting album purely because of the environment that it was created in. The relationship between Cash and the audience was entertaining, Cash was quite funny with the chat between some of the tracks. Another album I would listen to again.
Would listen to again, but not on my heavy rotation list.
The second Live-Prison-Album was okay. The first live-album was comparatively more relaxed to listen to and more interesting. (6/10) Favourite Tracks: Wreck of the Old '97, Jackson
The Spotify album isn't the same one from the Wikipedia article. The one I listened to was way too long and had a few too many cameos from other artists. Also, not a big fan of live albums anyway (San Quentin twice in a row? Ok...) and some of the pandering in this one was hard to take. Still the songs were pretty good, but I'd rather hear them on their original albums.
Pleasantly surprised
Heel cool!
this album was (BEEP) cause i found (BEEP) johnny boy had (BEEP) for prison and he (BEEP) (BEEP) (BEEP) the soap!
3.4 + I fell in love with this album when I first heard it but like many others was crestfallen to learn that all of the crowd sounds are canned and were added after the fact. Hearing that news felt as disappointing as when I learned Santa Claus isn't real. Still, a great live album highlighting Cash as an energetic performer and amazing live singer.
Enjoyed it. Every song sounds the same though, but I really enjoyed. I just hate the beeps.
Gewoon lekker muziek luisteren. Grootste hit is natuurlijk "Ring Of Fire" maar klassiekers als "Walk The Line" en "A Boy Named Sue" staan ook op dit album.
Old live.
Legendary.
3/5
Recorded at San Quentin Prison. Very interesting to listen to the spoken word as well as the music.
Good as far as country goes, but nothing much more to add. A bit weird to jump into a discography with a live album but there wasn't much choice in that
A slice of history, you don't get shows like this anymore. If I could give it 3.5 I would.
I love Johnny Cash but not a fan of live albums in general. So much of the magic is lost when you just have an audio recording with no video showing the nuances of the performance. Still very solid though!
At first I didn't like the audience part of the live album, but it grew on me. There was a good report between cash and the crowd. The songs were dead simple, but that allowed them to get pretty raw, almost a stream of conscious. Favorite song: Starkville County Jail
Rock n roll country.
Not as good as Folsom, made a bit slower by the fact he plays the same song twice
good ol johnny cash
3.5 *
One of my favorite songs - a man named Sue. But I don't really like live recordings. Somewhat repetitive.
Erikoisuutena sama San Quentin -biisi pariin kertaan peräkkäin. :D
I think Tanner was at this gig
The original LP wasn'ta very good value, at just a bit over 30 minutes and one of the songs played twice! So based on that I'll review this deluxe version but score the original. The fact this was recorded in a prison adds so much. The songs are more poignant, the audience reaction to the lyrics is great, plus there's all of the off-color banter, whether you like it or not. e.g. "you should know better than bending over in a place like this". I liked the supporting acts, though I could have done without June Carter's monologue. Needless to say the editing between songs could have been better but it adds to the authenticity. Johnny sounds a bit cranky. I'm surprised at the amount of complaining about his life that he does, considering his audience is going back to their prison cells after the show.
Country folk americano
Gimmick
- live album? not usually a huge fan of live albums but i do like johnny cash - blue suede shoes does kinda fuck
interesting
Bon album. Mais l’original me plait plus 3.75
Better than I expected
Songs: A boy named Sue, Cocaine blues
A classic but super depressed me.
I hold Johnny in very high regard. He reminds me of my grandfather and "A Boy Named Sue" is one of my absolute favorites (besides the obvious "I Walk the Line" and "Folsom Prison Blues"). That said, I get more out of the "At Folsom Prison" album vs. San Quentin. I think it just comes down to the tracklist - these ones don't resonate with me too much.
Nice to listen to. I like this kind of country en folk music.
Struggled to like it.
Jo toinen Cashin vankilalive tällä listalla. Parempi tämä oli kuin Folsom Prisonin levy. Välispiikit ja yleinen tunnelma nostaa arvosanan kolmoseen, vaikka musiikin puolesta kakkonen olisi ollut sopivampi arvio.
Honestly, it wasn't too bad. I'm not a huge Johnny Cash fan, but it felt fun and had that country twang. Liked the Carter Family stuff and the Bob Dylan written song was neat.
This is a delight, there are so many smiles and laughs and everyone is having a great time, enjoying the moment. It's very uplifting.
Album was okay. Felt more like a history lesson(in a good way), but not 100% my jam.
not bad, but live albums are a bit cheating.
nice. sadness was still a thing. but a few songs had a brighter beat. i liked it but wont listen again
Still not a huge Cash fan. But you can tell he's charismatic!
Live at Folsom is so much better than this. Neat album, but not Johnny's best.
Typical country music, but the fact that you hear the prisoners reacting to Johnny Cash's punchline is awesome
Played one song twice, two stars for that.
it is currently 40 degrees celsius where i live, this shit is not funny i'm actually melting and y'all are giving me country
Not really the kind of thing I enjoy. I recognised a few of the songs and wasn’t really that keen on them either. It’s ok, if you like Johnny Cash’s brand of country.
too much talking ik it’s a live show but
Tikriausiai būti ten tuo metu buvo neįtikėtina, bet dabar man nelabai rūpi.
mm its not my thing i'm sorry
I am a Johnny Cash fan but have never seen the appeal of the live prison albums. They mostly showcase Cash’s attitude and persona more than the music. Nothing too special here really except two takes at San Quentin and thirty seconds of Folsom Prison Blues.
“At Folsom Prison” tops it by far…
Not too bad, wouldn't care to listen again, some songs were good at the latter half but mainly boredom.
favourites: 1. I walk the line 2. "(There'll Be) Peace in the Valley"
I don't really get the point of this album. I get that Johnny Cash playing prisons is historically interesting, but the recording quality is poor and there's not much going on musically.
If its gotta be country, then it needs to be Johnny Cash Musically, I do prefer his later work, but this is really more a piece of history than a musical performance Respect
4/10 Folsom Prison Blues
Langt mellom høydepunktene på denne. Alt for mye tradisjonell køntri.
q paja el country
Haven't listened to much of Johnny Cash but this seems to show his personality so much, with his talks and jokes betweeen songs. Probably won't listen to it again, but really cool to hear such an iconic artist live with not cuts between, and to hear the audience listening/reacting (Especially when knowing who the audience is). Kinda like a time capsule of that specific culture and time.
Meh. Not a country fan but respect Johnny Cash. This live album just isn’t for me, though.
Godfather of americana is nice, maar live stoort
stop me die fucking live albums...
It is less an album more an audio documentary. The songs being punctuated by messages for the inmates, their responses to certain guards names - all these things give a sense of the setting and give added power to the performance. Granted, there is a lack of variety in the songs but the performance is incredible. This is the same review as At Folsom Prison as it is basically the same album. I am halving my previous mark for that reason.
Joni Käteinen kuulostaa hyvältä, on aina kuulostanut.
Personally, I feel that the less presence of the audience and cheering there is on a live album, the better, so this album was not to my taste.
I can acknowledge that Johhny Cash is a great performer and a hugely influential musician. However, why is this album on this list? Most of the songs aren't from this record, I guarantee the studio recordings sound better than this live album, about 30% of the album is just Cash talking and dealing with hecklers, and one of the tracks is just a song from the set list played a second time. Maybe it being recorded at a prison is a bigger deal than I'm making it out to be, but I don't understand what makes this album so significant. I'm admittedly not a huge Johnny Cash fan to begin with; it's just too plain for my liking. Still though, I feel like this album is just taking up space on this list.
Cash wrote and sang some ballads I very much enjoy, but this is just cornball country music and Johnny cuttin' up for his prison pals.
Odd live album, short and played one song twice? Equal parts chatting and singing.
2.5 - Not bad but little re-listen value
It gets u pumpin in a 60s type of way. it like a Scottish dance in a circle at a pub. But its american lol. its like elvis i mean its 60s music. Wanted man was cute it was like a really slowed down mamma mia. Wreck of the old 97 is ironic cus this was released in 69 but i see a lot of ny references and this song give wild west. very cowboy not so much country. It like tom and jerry raising animation with their legs moving circular at super speed. This album is so interesting on spotify cus its him singing live but its like actual live like he seways into the new songs. and when those songs plays the song in spotify plays as well. like wreck of the old 97 sewayed to walk the line so perfectly. Its like the entire concert was recorded and cut pefectly when songs started idk how to explain it. Walk the line is a bit of a short song. so interesting how it just cuts perfectly. youd have to listen to it to understand. Darlin companion is the longest song 7 minutes but johnny has a lot of talking cus this is a live recording. Darlin companion also has a woman singing along with him. This song makes you wanna kick your feet. Its a song that plays when two youngsters in the 50s see each other in the street and cant stop looking at each other. when one walks fast the other they both look back. Idk how to feel about this album it really is a 60s album and its live i dont typically like live recorded albums. Most of darlin companion is him talking lol he makes a lot of jokes with the audience. Not only does spotify segway into his songs but he does too. Starkville City Jail is the next song. I really dont think ill remember this album lol. This song i like tho oooo. fun. it talks about a wild flower child bye, its a combination of singing and talking singing which i dont hate. This is interesting. This song might go into my vives playlist. San queuentin plays next. this is more like a song id listen too. its grooby it makes me wanna move in a good way. its like giving me like san quentin i hate every inch of u. ooo what a line crowd went crazy. idk who that is but ill take it as romantic. i like this song a lot. could be one of my favorites.San may you tot and burn in hell damn this man got something against his person. I REALLY like this song. the lyrics are so interesting and you can tell he means them. oh i searched it up its a prison. omg i think hes performing at the actual prison. no wonder it said prison in the song lol. interesting so the men shouting at san quentin rot in hell is about the prison theyre in. omg so the song Starkville city jail is about him. hes the child that went to prison from picking flowers. he spent nights there lol, bro hates the prison from just a few day damn. Maybe he wrote this album for the prisoners cus he realized the disgustingness they live in. He performs san quentin again btw and its called reprise so ig he performed it again cus the prisoners loved it. A boy named sue is a song about himself being names sue and he hated it, talks about hi being bullied. he grew up mean and was shameful. he wanted to kill his dad that gave him that awful name. idk if this is all johnny tho cus i mean his name is johnny. he saw his dad at a bar i think and he told him his name is sue and hes gonna die. he hit him. his dad cut off a piece of sues ear wtf. Alright so its not an actual story lol. good storytelling. This was a massive hit im pretty sure its cus of the lyrics it hit number 2 on billboard 100. I dont like it that much. peace in the valley has nice guitar oooooo i like it a lot. its like a church song i mean it kinda is. but the guitar is so nice its like cleaning your ears. i might add this to my playlist aswell. Its like a song you play while the casket in a funeral is being carried to its grave. Folsom prison blues plays last and its a seriously upbeat song. its like your ruining with the song. He says not everyone was able to get into the room where he was at in the prison i feel bad for those prisoners. This song talks about espcaing the prison i think. This is like a horse run that humans do. thats what the song feels like. lol i didnt stop the album and orange blossom special played. Why do i like that song more than this entire album haha. Imma add that one to my playlist. they shouldve recommended that album instead. oooo its a nice song the harmonica is pretty.
Not really my style Feels like farm music and each song sounds the same
Eh it was a once and done album, the balls of Johnny cash cannot be understated.
Dont like country music.

I thought this prison recording was fine, but not that memorable. His banter with the audience was pretty annoying/tone deaf, there were a lot of hecklers, and he played the same uninteresting San Quentin song twice (which I see why but doesn't make sense as an album experience). When he thanked the warden and the guards at the end I feel like he showed his hand - playing for publicity and notoriety rather than to actually connect with the audience. Some of the songs were good but overall found this performance to be uninspired and fake. 2.4/5 -> 2/5
While Johnny Cash is one of the handful of country artists worth listening to, we do not need two prison concert albums on this list.
Don’t really understand why there’s a double up of pretty much the same “Johnny cash playing at a prison” on this list. It’s still good but I think two of the same album is a little bit lazy on Robert Dimery’s part, I don’t know I haven’t read the book, maybe the inclusion of this album is critical to the plot
I’m realizing live albums just might not be my thing… That said, I do find the topics he writes and sings about really interesting. You don’t usually hear those kinds of themes in music, so I definitely appreciate that. I also liked how he wove humour into both the songs and the performance.
Okay but not my cup of tea
Don’t really understand the appeal of live Johnny Cash, or Johnny Cash in general, to be honest. I guess the banter he has with the crowd makes him stand out somewhat, but I don’t really care. His songs are mostly ballads, which is fine on its own, but they have almost no instrumental accompaniment. His songs are for people who want to hear stories, and for ones who want to hear music (like me), well, there’s barely any to speak of. Although I wasn’t bored listening to this per se, his music always leaves me thoroughly underwhelmed. 5/10
bland amiercan folklore, old timey taylor swift. cold garbage.
Just not feeling any of Johnny Cash’s music…it’s all 2s for me. Next!
Interesting. Although the censorship wasn't really necessary and the Saab Quentin song didn't really need doing twice.
Meh. San Quentin was a funny song but I’m not a big Cash guy
ehh 2
No demi estilo
he just talks :(
too much talking
Too long, listened to some. Liked their little jokes.
The Good: Nothing The Bad: My mood The Ugly: Fucking look on my face as I realize I am getting screwed… I have been looking at this journey the wrong way… this is not meant as a journey to appreciate music. No sir, it isn’t. Instead, we are on this journey to see how long it takes before we start contemplating that maybe, just maybe, we have better things to do with our time than to sit around and let the likes of Mr Dimery fuck with us… When I saw the album cover, my first thought was “but, I’ve already listened to this…” to find out that I was mistaken about the prison where it was recorded. Now, don’t get me wrong, I can appreciate that there are plenty of people who rank this album very high on the list of album one needs to listen to before one dies, and I will not sit here and pretend that it isn’t so… Though technically this is not a greatest hits album, which would exclude it from the list, it gets pretty close to it… and still a monster album such as Saturday Night Fever is not on this list, because it is an amalgamation of several artist… Out of spite I am giving this album a 1* and I really hope that tomorrow a smile is on my face as the next album is being presented, as I am finding the past 2 weeks to be the worse so far in this journey that is starting to turn into a fucking nightmare…. Playing the album Pulse, by Pink Floyd to get the bad taste out of my mouth… Also, listened to the album and I can’t, in good conscious, raate this 1* However, seeing as I still don’t understand why this album is on the list, I will bump it up…. the album should be at least 3*
Maybe it was just the sound quality, or the fact that I've never been in prison, but this didn't resonate with me at all.
Why is this all Johnny Cash albums, if the next one is also Johnny Cash I’m gonna be so mad
Live albums shouldn't be on list. There was another Johnny cash live album on this list. That's way too much. I gave the other one 5. This will have to be less
30. not bad lots of speaking
Not really the type of music I would see myself listening
I feel like back in Johnny Cash’s day, prison concerts were more of a thing and apparently good PR and a hit record to boot. I can’t imagine anyone doing that in this day and age. Imagine Taylor Swift at a women’s correctional facility playing songs while inmates make friendship bracelets and call it their “personal accountability era”. Actually, we all know the Swifties would eat that up, but besides the point. Anyway, I did not enjoy this album, not a fan of Cash, but it was interesting to say the least.
This is little more than a Johnny Cash publicity stunt. Man in black performing in a prison....again... how bad ass. What annoys me most is all the banter, 30 minute album (thank goodness) of which he yammered on about nothing for a third of that time. Even worse, this isn't interesting storytelling banter, it was nonsense...look at us, we're in prison, I got arrested too, screw the man...blah blah blah. Insufferable, if you're going to record concert for release just perform the damn songs with minimal banter. The songs were actually good, cool versions of Boy Named Sue, Walk the Line and Folsom Prison Blues. It's a shame the lead ins took longer than the song.
Country music is still not my cup of tea. But I was surprised that Johnny Cash was signing this type of music. I was under impression that his discography was super close to NIN cover
Prefer Folsom but definitely special in its purpose and place.
I think live albums are great if you already love the music. Hard to listen to while working, which is how I go through this list.
not my type of album tbh but still a good one
tftfygy
Not a Cash fan, but can respect the unique venue where this was performed and what it said socially.
2.5
Not into country music. Love Cash's voice but that was about it.
At least the prisoners liked it
Oh, my; it certainly was a fine move to perform in a prison, but I can't relate to the music - and that's what matters to me after all.
songs would be good, but this live album is meh
4.0/10 Difficult listen for me...
2.5, good but non-essential fun. the chatter been the songs is the best part.
Estil elvis, average.
Heard some Johnny Cash songs before. Can't say that I care about this album though. I just don't care for most live albums on this list in general, this one was even worse because it included lots of talking in between. No disrespect to Johnny Cash but I'd prefer to listen to a studio album from him, this live feels chaotic. No idea why two of his prison albums are on the list but not Stop Making Sense which is one of the best live albums ever 2/5
First impressions not strong, doesn’t feel like my kind of music. Don’t love his character when he’s speaking either. The duet wasn’t great. Overall I found parts I liked but not to my taste. Made me go and read about Johnny Cash and he sounds an interesting character. Second album in a row with a singular Bob Dylan song on it.
Good guitar and funny guy just very long periods of him talking to the crowd
😈
Ogillar verkligen country.
Shit
I never liked this album. It is an inferior version of At Folsom Prison
country. sympa
Why to much talking. Im not a fan of live recordings.
Interesting to hear an album made in a prison setting – just don't enjoy his style of music enough to make me want to listen again.
1969 I'm constantly told that it's 'cool' to like Johny Cash. I guess I'm not one of the cool kids. I just don't like this, and it's not helped by the bootleg feel to the production. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Some, had to end it early. Revisit ❌️ Not for me No thank you★★☆☆☆ (3/10)
It's a live Johnny Cash performance, a classic one, for better and for the worst. Setlist wise, it's alright. Performance wise, is good, but clearly not a regular concert. Good for a listen and to share with music fans, but only if they're country music fans, imo. Gets a small rating bump upwards due to the context of the venue and the show, and the way he relates to the audience. There's a certain magic in that.
It’s funny how much I loved his album recorded at Folsom Prison and how much I disliked this album. I found it derivative and not as well done.
Interesting collection of songs, that Johnny cash seems a real character and quite a unique concept with some classic tunes in there but not sure I really class this as an album
I don't hate it. I didn't enjoy it.
Why is this the third time these songs are on this list?
it's just live songs.....
While I like a lot from Johnny Cash, I dislike this live album (too much talking) and the song selection. 2/5
Oddly funny
Just listened and I appreciate his improvisational style and his ability to interact with the crowd. It felt like a dance with the crowd rather than a performance. Very down to earth.
I do not enjoy live albums. I will never enjoy live albums. I just don't get them. So I will give yet another live album on this list a low, biased review. 2/5
Lite kul. Lite OK. Lite lagom.
Not my cup oft tea
Cute to listen live
This is a solid 3 star recording, if it wasn't live. Johnny swears a lot, trying to be edgy, and it seems cheap. I also don't enjoy spectator reactions.
Not a big fan of country music, but even I have to admit Johnny Cash has a great voice. I’m sure he’s very good at what he does (you can’t have such a lenghty and productive career without doing something right), so I was ready to listen to this album with as much good will as I could. The result, however, was not very satisfying. I kind of liked most of the song, but it was a bit hard for me to enjoy them, since nearly a third the album is just Johnny Cash talking. Between the very average recording conditions, the lengthy speeches, the exasperating blips and the crowd noises, I was constantly distracted from the music, and it made the experience far less enjoyable than it could have been. I definitely have nothing against Johnny Cash, and I’m ready to listen to more of it – but this album just doesn’t cut it for me.
Not the best Johnny Cash album, made worse by Spotify's censorship. Why they bleep "Son of a Bitch" I've no idea
Cash had the charisma, charms, and singing chops; but the album is too thin for him to work with.
Not a huge fan of Johnny Cash or live albums but this was fine.
It was fine. I’m more of a fan of “At Folsom Prison” though.
--Wanted Man...plodding --Wreck of the Old 97...now we're kickin' --I Walk the Line...nice but maybe too straightforward/basic --Darlin' Companion...fun but nothing special --Starkville City Jail...lyrics eerily relevant --San Quentin...sounds like a Johnny Cash song --San Quentin (Reprise)... ... --A Boy Named Sue...funny lyrics but musically? meh --Peace in the Valley...nice and sweet --Folsom Prison Blues...uh, where's the rest of the song?
Such poor sound quality it’s hard to even tell one song from the next. Unmistakably Johnny Cash but not particularly interesting. Hard to believe this is the stuff that used to be considered rebellious
Fun stuff, but at the end it's just singing with 60s music. Not a fan of the concert. 2/5
This is probably great if you’re a Johnny Cash fan, but unfortunately I’m not. I also don’t like how he’s just talking for half of the album, although I do understand why this album is on this list.
Quite like the vibes, I am not a big fan of country music tho 2/5
Musiken dock? Tråkig.
Two Johnny Cash live albums on this list?
Nice listening. Not a fan of it being a live album. I'm sure there's other studio albums that couldve been on the list 2/5
A bit different from the Folsom Prison album. Only 30 minutes of music and talking. "Wanted Man" is good.
Neat! No strong feelings
Mid as fuck
It’s Johnny Cash, but it’s still country. I’ll give it an extra star because I liked the movie.
Johnny Cash er så overrated omd
this album is such an influential piece of media, a prison live album is such a powerful thing. the moment between the crowd and cash is just so humane. i just don't like country...
Yes..Cash is a legend…but I feel like I just the heard the same album with Live at Folsom…blame the algorithm for the 2 stars on this one. Plus only 34 minutes long. Wouldn’t call this one of the greatest albums…
So... this is a 'legendary' album in 'country', a genre I don't much like, but I'll try and give it a proper go. First thing, the sound quality is awful. Echoey, remote sounding vocals and instruments, and it sounds dynamically flattened. Yes, it is live and yes the venue was probably less than ideal, even so... Getting onto the music. The arrangements are simplistic, nothing to hook onto there. I don't find Cash's voice particularly engaging. That leaves me with the lyrics... 'ditties' more than 'songs'; nothing lyrically engaging. No deep social content, nothing 'meaningful'. I'll admit I just don't 'get' Country. I'm expecting lots of 5/5 reviews but for me it is a 2.
Johnny’s great, but he’s not for me
Oldies country, it's okay.
I want to like Johnny Cash, but the fact that he was let OUT of prison after this album upsets me.
Not huge on country but usually love Johnny cash, if you’re gunna listen to a live album listen to Folsom prison it’s leagues ahead
Super interesting time capsule, not necessarily a record I needed
Didn’t work for me too. Not yet at least
Classic Johnny Cash obviously. Odd how every song sounded almost the same whenever it’s in a live performance.
JC, one of a kind...
I only know Cash’s later period—dark, even haunted—which I kind of like. Here, it’s about lighthearted tunes, relatively basic country music. Still, it’s hard not to be impressed by the charisma and voice of Johnny Cash, his humor, and the surprisingly fluid rhymes. I usually don’t enjoy this type of music, but I had pleasure listening to this live recording, punctuated by “beeps” for every swear word, where Cash holds the prison audience in the palm of his hand.
not for me
I generally like Johnny Cash, but I feel like this album is a step down from Live at Folsom Prison. I was surprised, at 35 minutes, it felt like most of this album was stage banter instead of songs (which really limits the re-listen potential), and it doesn't help that they play San Quentin twice. I tend to give this list the benefit of the doubt even when a live album comes up, and this might have been a hit for Johnny Cash (weirdly), but I feel like this is honestly a pretty sub-par live album.
Bored soz
Didn’t like all the talking. Just sing damit!
Country doesn't do anything for me. The comedic interludes where funny, though.
Country music performed at a prison, I can imagine Johnny strumming his guitar in front of a group of inmates - Live music aspect is unique and adds some flavor, but detracts from the listenability - Deep voice and funny vocals are standouts - More of a show than music I would listen to
Johnny Cash has never appealed to me. San Quentin is cool to hear when he’s singing it to the inmates.
A Boy Named Sue was quite good and the interactions with the crowd were entertaining but unfortunately Johnny sounded bored and so was I.
So did Mr Cash only release albums from prison? As both albums I've heard have been the same.
2,5
johnny cash, just had a cover act play at my venue and didn't go, not the biggest johnny cash fan :( 5/10
I lik ponovi istu pjesmu dvaput zaredom. Okeeeej.
A, good ol' Johnny Wannabe bad guy.
OK. But falls foul of the typical live album issues.
Oof, the mic quality on Wanted Man... Again, this would be more fun if I were in the audience.
I liked when he was just talking to the crowd better than when he was playing the music…so that’s probably not a good sign.
This is a peculiar listen. On the one hand, this is a pretty decently recorded live album, especially considering the challenging environment with plenty of background noise. Cash is at his vivacious best and is really quite engaging as a performer. I can't help but feel that these 'live at xyz prison' performances shouldn't have been allowed. Here we have some of the most dangerous criminals being afforded a live performance that everyone else has to pay for and may not have access to. The title track is a playful swipe at the state and prison system that when played once is a nice attempt by Cash to connect with his audience but upon hearing it reprised immediately, it feels as though he is attempting to incite prisoner action. I wouldn't consider this album essential listening, especially as there are superior live prison albums from Cash already in existence. Top 3: 1. (There'll be) Peace in the Valley 2. Darlin' Companion (w/ June Carter) 3. A Boy Named Sue Bottom 2: 1. San Quentin (Reprised) 2. San Quentin
Not a great live album - I know they recorded in a prison but at least try to get the production into a listenable state.
It’s Johnny Cash. His voice is so special. But honestly all the time spent with Johnny kissing up to, I mean talking to, the inmates is annoying. And the pandering San Quentin song he wrote for them is played and needlessly included twice in a row. It’s a little like a show-off bad boy frat party. Of course he plays some hits, which are always good to hear. Because it’s Johnny Cash. So never a total waste of time.
As the music and arrangements are at times pretty bland, this pretty much stands or falls with Cash's persona and the listener's buying into this outlaw schtick. I for one, find it at times contrived.
Hey I think somebody is smuggling in music in this standup special! (Not that I cared for the music.)
The chat was good and i liked wreck of 97 and boy named sue but other than that I didn't really enjoy it. It felt more like a historical artifact than an album i'd want to listen to on the regular. I think i'm just not really a fan of the man in black.
Nope
I’ll watch Walk The Line again one day and that’ll be enough Johnny Cash for me. Bet it was great in priz.
Albumi #50, 16.09.2024 Johnny Cashin konserttitaltiointi vuodelta 1969. Taltiointi on tehty San Quentinin vankilassa 24.2.1969. Taltioinnin äänenlaatu on kehno, mutta Cashin live-karisma pelastaa paljon. Perus country-rock-meininkiä.
I just don’t feel like one needs to hear TWO live prison albums before they die. Like I agree with one. But can we get a June Carter Cash too? Probably not gonna happen. Maybe. I like his hits tho.
This sounds like johnny cash alright but its not my style. Too much twang and noise to filter out. Sounds proper and idk, these reviews feel forced. Hopefully they get better over time
Way too much talking, but not my cup of tea in general
story makes it cooler
Got some classics here; Walk The Line, Boy Named Sue, and Folsom Prison Blues sound about the same live as the studio versions. $36 for picking flowers in the middle of the night was likely a D&D pickup (all depends on how you look at it.) singing for a prison is going to get you on the 1001 list , this dated disc comes in at (2.2*s)
Johnny Cash has a few decent songs but I'm generally not a big fan and this album was no game-changer. I didn't like how the "explicit" words were so blatantly (and poorly) bleeped on this set but I did sorta dig the prison crowd sounds and Cash's banter. You got a good feel for the vibe but it sounds pretty dated and I don't need to revisit it.
I'm not one for old cowboy music but some simple story telling and banter make this an entertaining show, especially if you are stuck and prison and don't got much to do. Cash brings the attitude and probably pissed off the warden a bit. Interesting idea to do a prison tour...guess Cash had a soft spot having served time himself. Glad this was a shortie...1.7.
Years ago in the wake of Walk The Line I thought I might be a Cash fan. Then I listened to more than 3 songs and realized that I'm just not into it. Johnny Cash may be on the Mount Rushmore of overrated acts for me. I have coworkers and colleagues who constantly gush about how great he is yet they can never name more than 1-2 songs they like (Burning Ring of Fire is OK I guess?). I'd pass on the vast majority of his early work, and I can't stand his late covers of Hurt and Personal Jesus that people won't shut the fuck up about. While a scathing review is probably expected, At San Quentin is an OK album. You get a decent sense of his persona and performance charisma while the prison crowd is on the ride. It's a short enough example of a handful of his popular hits and some interludes that don't overstay their welcome. I imagine the prison concerts were iconic and important in their time so I give him credit for doing something different. It's not something I'll come back to and don't need to slam either. It has it's place and I wouldn't fault someone if they throw this on in the background. 1.7 stars
A slog, but I knew that going in. I'm glad he existed to inspire future musicians, but I don't volunteer to listen to him if I can help it.
Songs aren’t bad, but love albums seem to always be hard to do, and this being live brings it down.
Needs work. Seems like a lesser repeat of other materials.
I don't endorse the inclusion of live albums unless it is phenomenal, like "Live At Pompeii" by Pink Floyd. Johnny Cash's "At San Quentin" was pretty soulless and dreadful. The audiences cheering did not help. You've either got to be a farmer or more than 60-years-old to appreciate the album.
Is it his best? I hope not
Kind of boring tbh
The music is alright. Sadly, I can't understand what he's saying, it seems crucial here
Good songs, but not seeing much value in this live album
That image from this concert of Cash flipping off the camera (https://www.nme.com/news/music/johnny-cash-19-1292708) is so appropriate for who he was. Flipping off a photographer who you are paying to take pictures of your concert because you're pretending you are doing it to an authority figure perfectly sums up Johnny Cash. Everything about him was a put-on, which could likely be said about all artists, but the crudeness of the act is particularly galling about Cash. It’s like pretentious music nerds are given a choice of two artists who are deep-voiced and vastly over-hyped to stan and they have to choose between Johnny Cash or Tom Waits. I’m not saying he wasn’t good. I’m definitely not saying he didn’t surround himself with talented artists, especially The Carter Family. But the distance between the quality of his output and the esteem in which he’s held is absurd. This album is fine. I can’t think of another live album where the setting of the performance is such an integral part of the album itself other than his other live prison albums. There are some good songs on here, this album is important and everyone should hear it. But I just find Johnny Cash annoying.
Non mi piacciono i live
Was excited when this popped up, maybe my mood was off, but it did little
Live at Folsom Prison felt somehow better than this one.
Typischer Cash Sound, nette Atmosphäre 2/5
Most of the appeal of this album comes from the interaction with the prison audience. It's fun to hear Cash's jokes and the crowd's reactions to them, but the songs themselves lack depth. The live recording includes the occasional cough and some gaffes like trying to re-tune the guitar a few minutes in. It's debatable whether this kind of thing adds charm or removes polish.
