Reviews (page 9 of 14)

liked it better than i thought i would!

All songs I have listen to them not knowing they were all from the same album. Last song was the only one I didn’t like as much.

Oh yea I’m in love this album blended so well together it had different beats , vocals and production that worked so well the best song by FAR is human nature that was an out of body experience I’m very surprised

Great album!

in my opinion, this album is one of the most iconc and recognisable.

It take me back to 19th century and kinda feeling old listening to it overall not bad!

Some great classics on this album. I like a majority of the songs, but a few didn't really age well.

Undeniably a massive record that managed to blend funk, rock, dance, and pop into one giant confection. There is brilliance all over this album and especially Quincy Jones' production. But there are a few songs that either leave no impression ("Baby Be Mine " "The Lady in My Life") or are just cringe worthy ("The Girl is Mine") that it keeps me from giving it 5 stars. But when you have "Gotta Be Starting Something," "Beat It " and, especially, "Billiie Jean," the highs on this way overcome the lows.

It’s really hard to rate an album like this, when the music exists within everyone’s consciousness already. I can’t connect with it on a real level, simply because it is what it is. Good music though!

It's good, thriller doesn't really fit the vibe of the album but it's a classic. The Paul McCartney song is terrible

I listened to this so much as a kid, and I can't hate on it. Quincy Jones's production, the vocals and ad libs, it's the absolute peak of early 80s pop and you can see why it was so huge. But now, as an album? A middling 4. WBSS, Beat It and Billie Jean are absolute bangers (dated lyrical choices aside). But McCartney brings a horrible saccharine toothlessness, Baby Be Mine and The Lady In My Life are utterly forgettable. PYT is just uncomfortable in hindsight. Human Nature is quite nice, but immediately makes me think of better tunes which sampled it. So as a historical document, fascinating. As an album? Good in places Also Thriller is utterly riduculous, but that's half the point.

Still the benchmark for an artist and their creative team making a collection of strong singles in search of chart dominance. I go back occasionally expecting the hits to have lost some of their appeal, but - and part of this is the eternal 1980s aesthetic we have lived in - it’s still all killer, no filler, a thriller!

Hoef niet eens te luisteren. Heb het album op vinyl en is 100% een van mijn favorieten ooit. Michael Jackson, en alle nummers op dit album, zijn niet voor niets onvergetelijk beroemd. Tijdloos en voor mij, (one of) the greatest of all time

Baby Be Mine Esta no me gustó tanto. Siento que es bastante repetitiva y que alrededor de los dos minutos ya no propone nada nuevo, lo que hace que me aburra un poco. Obviamente está bien hecha a nivel musical, pero dentro del álbum no me parece de las más destacables. The Girl Is Mine (with Paul McCartney) No sé bien cómo explicarlo, pero es una canción re satisfactoria. The Lady in My Life Es un buen cierre para el álbum, pero personalmente no me gustó mucho. ★★★★

-wow. this is just. such an incredible album. definitely topping Off The Wall for me which was already amazing… god damn, basically all of my favorite MJ songs are on here -it’s certainly not flawless. some songs (hint hint the Paul McCartney feature) were duds. but they didn’t take away from the cohesiveness and sheer talent. throw Chicago in here and it would basically be perfect to me -Favorites: Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)

I'm not a big pop fan, but I can't deny that this is a fun album. Jackson has an incredible ability to find such catchy melody lines that immediately get stuck in your head. Some of the songs were pretty cheesy, and I really could do without Thriller, which is not one of the better songs. It is very telling that the best track on this pop album is the rock song. Standout Tracks: Beat It, Billie Jean, P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)

Legendary album. Unbelievable vocals. Iconic music video. Not perfect in every way (see the McCartney collab) but an iconic work regardless.

Beat it classic Billie Jean really loved

Did not listen

Fantastic !

It's a classic for a reason! Beat It, Billie Jean, PYT, and Thriller are top tier.

His best album?

We took the four year old to rugba leegue’s greatest rivalry: State of Origin. State vs state, mate vs mate. It got a bit loud for him, and I had brought noise cancelling headphones just incase. I asked him what he wanted to listen to, and without hesitation he said Michael Jackson. He sat there for the second half and listened to Thriller in its entirety.

Pretty interesting

I've got three words for you: Eddie. Van. Halen. I'll give you two more: Quincy. Jones. End of notes

Que des tubes sur cet album ! Je ne suis forcément un fan de MJ mais là je dois m'incliner !

Somewhere between a 4 and 5 star for me, the hits are undeniably huge, just felt some of the other songs didn't blow me away.

Wish he wasn’t in the Epstein files tho……

i used to think michael jackson was the basketball player

Already listened. Just very solid, well executed pop music. 'Thriller', 'Beat it', and 'Billie jean' are great songs. I love Paul McCartney but his song with Michael Jackson is a little basic, but is so self-aware in its cheesiness that it's somewhat endearing.

First things first, this album is STACKED. Like, my god. It's literally like a greatest hits album. Other than the objective fact that the album is indeed, stacked. It is the most sold album ever, because of that fact I thought it would be ever meh or a bad one, but it isn't half bad. The title track holds a memory for me where me and my brother were scared shit-less of the music video, It definitely was the zombies that were the reason. It's also crazy how much I remember of the song even though I haven't heard it in a long time, especially the spoken word part with the church-like organs, and that laugh the closes the track. This honestly exceeded my expectations, even if it sounds a bit weird with it being the most sold album. Highlight Song/s: "The Girl Is Mine", "Thriller", "Beat It" and "Billie Jean"

Without a doubt one of the all time Classic albums. I remember this coming out back in the day and being trashed on holiday road trips. Still a great album

1. Wanna be starting something 2. Baby be mine 3. The girl is mine 4. Thriller 5. Beat it 6. Billy Jean 7. Human Nature 8. P.Y.T. 9. Lady in my Life 5 ongelooflijke dance pop classics: 1, 4, 5, 6 & 8 2 prachtige zwijmel nummers: 3 & 7 2 nietszeggende nummers: 2 & 9 Arrangement 1. 8 2. 7 3. 9 4. 10 5. 10 6. 10 7. 9 8. 9 9. 7 Hook 1. 8 2. 5 3. 9 4. 10 5. 10 6. 10 7. 7 8. 8 9. 5 Tekst 1. 7 2. 6 3. 8 4. 9 5. 8 6. 9 7. 8 8. 7 9. 8 221/270=8.2

High 4/5 but not quite 5/5. The Thriller -> Beat It -> Billie Jean sequence are just banger on banger but I didn't quite warm up to the other songs in this album as a whole. Maybe because the other three songs are just as big of hits that they are and therefore stand out too much compared to the other songs, the album doesn't feel as smooth as I would like a 5/5 album to be. Maybe it's just me and this rating may change (very probably only higher) in the future.

Great album overall. This might be my first pop album that I've listened to from front to back. Of course the big hits are on here like Beat It, Thriller, Billie Jean. I personally think that the "weakest" songs from the album are the opener "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" just because of those high pitched vocals that MJ does and the other one is "P.Y.T (Pretty Young Thing)" mainly the chorus is a bit weird for now but it may grow on me in time. My favourite song from the deep cuts are "The Lady in My Life" it has a great melody and I also really like "The Girl Is Mine" with Paul McCartney the synergy between MJ and Paul is absolutely amazing.

Of course this was going to be in there.

One too many songs about the girl being mine, but Thriller>Beat It>Billie Jean is quite a run

Billie jean is echt zo'n tering goed nummer wtf!! De gitaren hierin zijn echt insane, bas en elektrische. Love het album, bangers na bangers

Certainly deserves the title for the King of Pop. What makes this album really stand out for me is that all this time, I’ve only had a lot of these songs saved from his compilation albums, not knowing that a ton of his bangers came from the Thriller album. So while listening to it, I was pleasantly surprised to hear so many of them coming off one single piece of his discography.

I mean, it's Thriller.

Just reading the track list from this album, I was already ready to give it 5 stars. After listening, mayyyyyyyyybe changing it to a 4 but I’m torn. I don’t think it’s a perfect album, the song with Paul McCartney is weird in a lot of ways but Beat It, Thriller, and Billie Jean are all BANGERS

Great pop album. Dude has a hell of a voice and the production was amazing. Great singles as well.

So mainstream and popular that a lot of "serious listeners" shit on it a bit. It's really really good. High 4

I knew this album was a classic and I know why.

paul mccartney jumpscare fav: human nature

Great album

You can’t go wrong with the classics. It was great to go through and listen to the whole album again. I will say that obviously some songs are better than others but it’s understandable why this album has stood the test of time and was so big when it came out.

Yes to everything except the Paul McCartney song. Used to pop this CD on with vibrator Ash and daaaannnnceeee

I listened to this on a cold and grey December park run this morning. The progression from Thriller to Beat It to Billie Jean is pretty incredible and made for a really peak running experience. This album also reminds of basement keg dance parties in college in a fun way. I will always want to dance to PYT. Yes not everything holds up but still what an album! Minus 1 star though for The Girl is Mine.

A classic for a reason. A true murderer's row in the middle with Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, Human Nature, and PYT. The rest of the album is sort of replacement level 80s pop/R&B for me, with the Girl is Mine answering the question, "what if two of the greatest singer/songwriters in history did a duet". That answer is "it stinks." But come on, those five songs?????

--Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'...Ma-ma-se, ma-ma-sa, ma-ma-coo-sa! Ma-ma-se, ma-ma-sa, ma-ma-coo-sa! Ma-ma-se, ma-ma-sa, ma-ma-coo-sa! --Baby Be Mine...cheesy af. but it's a groove --The Girl is Mine...Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney together?! Must be one of the best songs ever, right? it's terrible --Thriller...classic --Beat It...it's a good tune but I never bought the attitude --Billie Jean...GOAT --Human Nature...warm grilled cheese --P.Y.T....(see "Beat It") --The Lady in My Life...not my thing but he's in good voice and Quincy drops some nice bass at the end

It's fine. It's not 5 stars.

too many hits

The King of Pop proves it on this album with some really great pop tunes here. When I was a kid, this album got me, especially 'Got to be Startin' Something', which I still think is a really great track. Other classics also make this a great album so even though it's a rare guilty pleasure, I still rate it highly.

I think this is the first time I've heard this incredibly successful album in its entirety, and I can see why only a few tracks became eternal radio hits; much of the rest of the album is pretty forgettable. But the trio of massive and enduring hits--"Thriller", "Beat it" and "Billie Jean", all with high-quality videos to go with them--overshadow everything else, and make this a probably his most impressive production over his lengthy career. I also realized as I watched the videos that that I'd never seen any of them before, even the epic and awesome "Thriller"; I can now see why this gets best-video-of-all-time awards. And very impressive that he managed to get 80 or so real-life Crips and Bloods for the "Beat it" video (although I don't think they were any of the dancers), and also got Eddie Van Halen for the "Billie Jean" solo. I've never really been Michael Jackson fan, so the songs don't really do much for me (especially the filler, and *especially* the painful "The girl is mine" made even more painful with Paul McCartney contributing), but it's hard to deny that this is one of if not his greatest album, if only for its defining legacy on American popular music and culture.

Prefer the style in Bad but another top album with some classics. Ideally would have been a 4.5.

This is the 80s distilled into a single album. The beat it / thriller/ Billie Jean suite would kill a medieval peasant

You know the rule: minus a star for kid diddlin’.

Tough to not give it a 5

Great album, classic

#780. Mostly thriller, but also a little filler. There's some great stuff here, but there's some duds shitting up the room keeping it from being something perfect. 4/5: still pretty great though

A good album, hadn't listened to it before besides just the singles

Dommage. Si on doit séparer l’homme de l’artiste (grrr), ça vaut un 5/5. Mais je le mettrai pas…

Reviewing musically. Important to qualify these things. This is a genius pop/disco album. At one point in the middle it is stupendous; three certified bangers and some other decent stuff in between. It’s almost (maybe actually) insufferably catchy at its best but quite middling at its worst. The slower love songs make sense in a pop album but I can’t say they add anything and the Paul McCartney song is totally unnecessary. Could have been a 5 but it’s not quite there and I don’t necessarily want MJ on my profile page.

More like a greatest hits this album. "Baby be mine" and to a lesser extent "human nature" and "pretty Young Thing" etc . I think songs like this are much more dated in that they are very of the time (Like oldschool disco). Its what I dont like so much about the genre / artist. Has to be said though this is otherwise an extremely strong album of near constant bangers. I feel a weak 4 is justified based on at least half the songs being spot on.

This is a great, tight pop album. And while I know it’s classic, I really hate the “heehees” and the grunting. I feel like it cheapens the music.

Awesome!

The highs are sky-high and the lows are still smooth, enjoyable, and perched comfortably, though said lows spend enough time to bring the album just shy of a 5, it's a great listen for any day nonetheless

"Thriller" to "Beat It" to "Billie Jean", is there a bigger three song sequence in all of pop music? This album is undoubtedly one of the most impactful ever. Michael Jackson was already a star; this propelled him into immortality. Thriller takes most of the foundation of Off the Wall and pushes its extremes-- it rocks harder (e.g. Van Halen's guitar solo in "Beat It"), its bass lines are even more danceable, its soft pop ballads are even smoother. His talents as a vocalist are no longer just a shadow of Stevie Wonder, but are full force here. Jackson said he wanted Thriller to be the biggest album of all time, wondering why can't an album just consist solely of singles. That nearly holds true here, as every song has a hook, but there are clearly lesser songs. A lot of lyrics in the soft pop songs are overly cliche. "Baby Be Mine" has an insanely good bass line, but what saves the dumb lyrics is Jackson's delivery and melody. The Paul McCartney spoken word section on "The Girl Is Mine" is so cheesy that the song overall approaches parody. "The Lady in My Life" is my least favorite song, too long and cliche and not much substance. I suppose this is just Jackson and Quincy Jones speaking the R&B "language" but I find it pretty played out and boring. And then I cringe so much at so many of these romantic lyrics and themes. The worst is probably "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" despite its strengths in the instrumental section. I just can't separate the man (pedophile) from the music. But many songs do achieve incredible highs. What is interesting about "Thriller", "Beat It", and "Billie Jean" is the edge that these songs have. There is a certain paranoia, even anger or isolation and darkness permeating these songs, which lend them honesty. "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" also fits into this category, which builds excellent momentum and interest at the beginning of the album. Unfortunately, momentum is an issue in the track listing, as the best songs are packed in the middle. It's not that other songs are bad, but they feel more like standard fare. Objectively, this isn't a perfect album, but it is one of the most significant ever. Giving credit where it's due, this is also significant in Jackson reaching superstardom as a black musician, breaking a racial barrier. Of course, he did much to physically change his appearance and reputation over the following decades, and he remains controversial as a sort of misunderstood, tragic character. If he had been any lesser of a musician, he would be cast off as a criminal and monster. However, his complicated legacy lives on, a reminder of why we must be wary of our heroes.

Some of it sounds a bit dated, but the hits still hit.

hehehe-haw Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' is groovy as hell. Love all the layers of percussion intertwining, so much energy there, pretty amazing Track 1. Vocal is mixed too low imho though ;p Ohh Baby Be Mine chord pad synth is soooo good. Leads are sick too but are so period specific. I really love this vocal performance- feels so raw and honest like he's pushing past his limits into like James Brown terrority. WOAH insane mode(?) shift?? MUCH less into Track 3... the doggone girl is mine yip shes mine :D. PM and MJ fighting over a girl is a ridiculous concept for a song and they definitely should have left this one off. We're really going from that into three of the most famous songs of all time? Apparently The Girl is Mine was the LEAD SINGLE for the album (picked for crossover accessibility to white radio stations thanks to PM) - wild stuff. "Are the wolves howling necessary for the studio version?" is what I would have asked in the session so it's probably good I wasn't there. Thriller is a good song if not campy as hell (actually most of this album is campy in retrospect. Was it campy at the time I wonder?) Billie Jean is all all-timer but why is the shaker so fucking loud in my right ear (but it's actually a really good sounding shaker rezpekt). Love the janky ad libs vocals. Human Nature - Ballads like this normally aren't my vibe, but there's a lot to like here. Drum groove is super cool, and some really interesting vocal delays that stutter and pitch up and down in a very modern way. Shakers too loud. Never heard PYT before but it's very dope, so many interesting layers. super pitched up vocals, crazy synth sounds.. Lady - loveee the slow attack/porta on those synth pads so much. But again, I have a tough time getting into schmaltzy/sentimental ballads like this. And one of the biggest albums of all time just kinda slowly fades out...

What a start to the record. 6-minute relentless beautiful stuff. The groove in Wanna Be Startin Somethin is quite literally infectious. All these elements are so perf. Baby Be Mine goes so hard. Paul song is hilarious. Doggone is a word that probably shouldn't be in a chorus post-WWII. Good for Paul weaselling himself onto this classic record though. 4, 5, 6 is a crazy run. Human Nature is a beautiful song wowz. PYT is so fucking good. Maybe one of the best choruses ever? 9 tracks is the perfect length of a record. Classique.

Was looking forward to MJ coming up because I’ve never actually listened to a full MJ record. Great one to start. I mean there are just so many hits on this record it’s insane. I have to say that Baby Be Mine and The Girl Is Mine are very cheesy in a way I don’t love. The Paul McCartney feature and skit is hilarious though. Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean is potentially the craziest 3 track run in musical history? Human Nature is gorgeous. Might be my favourite track. PYT feels like more of the same energy from earlier in the record. Some really cool little synth riffs. Lady in My Life is kind of a weak closer for me. The production is of course incredible. Very definitively 80s. That spanky clean Strat guitar sound, those big synth stabs. So many iconic and influential musical moments. Steve Lukather ripping on Human Nature, Eddie Van Halen on Beat It. I definitely really enjoy listening to this record, I have a hard time giving it 5 for my personal taste mainly because of tracks 2-3 and 8-9 not really doing anything for me. The brilliance of the pop songwriting and production are undeniable. The best selling record of all time and it makes sense.

Just too many good songs and classics to give this less than 4

It is actually a quality album! Woo-hoo! Ow!

Pop isn't normally my thing, but a catching myself singing and dancing along to this a couple of times makes me think otherwise. Deserves to be on this list for sure

About half of the songs on Thriller are of great timeless quality, the other half is good as far as pop is considered and the album would be better off without the sappy catastrophe that is The Girl Is Mine (sorry Paul).

Hard to deny the enduring legacy as one of the great pop albums. There is a great run of tracks but there are some duds on here too (most of MJs ballads are so off putting…). The production on the album in particular likely helped shape the sound of the 80s to come and I’m surprised that this sounds so different to the style of off the wall despite both being produced by Quincy Jones. For all his faults, the vocals on this are great even if the ad libs are a bit cringe in isolation.

On a technical level, this album should be a 5. Great production, tight tracklist. But it doesn't have the personal x factor, to give it a 5 for me. Disclosure, I still haven't watched finding neverland

I wouldn't consider myself a Michael Jackson "fan" but I do find myself enjoying much of his music. I guess that's why he's the king of pop. There's some really obvious bangers on this one, and some others that are just meh. Kind of funny though, as good and iconic of a song as it is, i don't really think Thriller fits well on this album. 4/5.

Nunca me harán odiarte, Michael Muy grosero Nota: 3.9

During my youth Michael Jackson got on my nerves with his constant presence. He turned himself into an incredibly ridiculous caricature. This album came out before he really went downhill. Now that I've listened to it in its entirety for the first time, I was surprised at how good the songs still sounded. Even his later obligatory, constant squeaking when he grabbed his crotch wasn't there yet. I also prefer the cover version of Billy Jean by the German punk band The Bates to the original. Nevertheless, I must admit that my reservations about the music on this album were unfounded. 4/5

Iconical Pop.

Classic album, legendary. 8.4/10

What to say a contentious Pedo, but this album is great and was the soundtrack to the 80s and my childhood. Remeber my sister playing this when I was very small and the weird ass voice at the end of thriller scaring the hell out of me. Billie Jean also is one of the best songs ever written. It should have 5 stars but he gets one taken away for being a bit evil. (Should probably be more).

Very well produced

do we separate the art from the artist?

It’s hard not love this album. Six of nine tracks were radio singles & “Thriller” was an event unto itself. I know there’s a dark shadow hanging over it with what happens afterwards, so it do make it harder to love. But I tell myself all that stuff happened after this album & therefore I can enjoy it. A stupid compromise I know.

What wasn't said yet about this one... what can I ad... Probably nothing, so I'll just say I love it. I know, Of the Wall might be funkier, and bad might be sharper, but there never was and will never be a pop record like Thriller. Timeless sound, incredible songs, masterful production and perfect execution. Long live MJ's legacy. After saying all that- my integrity can't give it a 5. It's a very, very high 4

Отличный альбом. викенд точно им вдохновлялся

Ottamatta kantaa mieheen itseensä, niin siltikin levy on hieman pettymys ennakko-odotuksiin nähden. Maailman myydyin levy kuitenkin kyseessä. Silti 4/5.

Obviously it has a run of unimpeachable bangers in the middle (Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean), but there is some schmaltzy trash too (The Girl Is Mine is truly unlistenable, Human Nature is not much better).

Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ started my day off very nicely, it’s by some distance my favourite MJ song (Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough is up there too). I’d not listened to any MJ for a long time and listening to this made me realise it’s almost a greatest hits collection. It has some tremendous highs, mostly among the most famous hits like Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean. Admittedly a couple of the songs don’t do a lot for me and the duet with Paul McCartney perhaps the low point for me.

Nothing controversial about these bops.

Excellent

Sehr energiegeladen. Klassiker

Light 4,5

Paul McCartney!

Pretty great album. Separating the art from the artist.

Buoyed by the radio hits

As much as I don't like Michael Jackson's music, I enjoyed this album. I've heard it before, I even had a vinyl record I had given to a friend cos I know I won't be listening to it much. So I thought I was going to skip it quickly, just listen a bit and enjoy the sound clarity because production here is phenomenal. But I kept listening and forty minutes after I'm going to give it 4 stars even though his music is not my vibe. Liked tracks: Thriller, Billie Jean, Beat It, others are skippable but these three are so good they deserve a higher rating than the other MJ albums I've listened to.

A masterpiece in pop, but have been over exposed to the songs. Top track: Billie Jean / Thriller

A short but classic album. Tracks 4, 5, and 6 are absolutely the best tracks. Song 8 is an underrated banger. The longevity and cultural impact of this album/artist bump its score up.

Strong start, The girl is mine bit weird but then back to back to back bangers before a nice chill ending, very strong album, good listen.

The lyrics were kind of weird when I focused on them more on this listen, but that didn't stop the songs from sounding cool. I'm not a VEGETABLE

great album

What do you say about Thriller? Biggest album sales of all time? Nearly every song could be a hit? "The Girl is Mine" is the low point? (It is but oddly the one that is still stuck in my brain a day later) I'm not a big fan of Jackson and his music, but even I can admit that there is something special on this one. Sure, I can do without "Billie Jean" ever again. And I think it's odd that Jackson did a serious "parody" of Weird Al's "Eat It" with "Beat It"* But I really think "PYT" is an absolute blast and probably Jackson's greatest musical contribution. (disregarding all the ick factor of Jackson singing about a "Young Thing") *see Weird: The Al Yankovic Story

Not perfect but still a seminal pop album of the 80's.

This is an iconic album from Michael Jackson. For me, the song that steals the show is Billie Jean.

The words ‘Michael Jackson had a huge impact on me as a kid’ may carry negative connotations now but this and the follow up, _Bad_, were massive albums for me growing up. To be honest, they’re not albums I go back to at all now but playing this for the first time in maybe a couple of decades, there’s no denying the quality here.

It’s Thriller so mostly killer - but also some filler.

Would have gotten a 5 if it wasn’t for that stupid dog gone Beatle song

Every single song on this album makes me want to listen to beat it. Fucking love beat it tho, 3 stars for beat it alone! Honestly the first few songs are a drag, I guess the funky duwap duwap only works when the singer is trying to be intimidating and not… romantic… yeah. That’s what’s bothering me. Also any Beatle makes me want to crawl out of my skin so there’s that. I don’t need to say anything about Thriller and Billy Jean. They’re Thriller and Billy Jean. Duh. Tho I didn’t expect to like Human Nature as much I did, but sometimes deep cuts (if you can call any song of this album a deep cut) surprise you. This album also sadly doesn’t change my top 3 songs with Micheal Jackson on them which does mean “Somebody’s watching me” is still on that list. Disgraceful tbh. Anyways I really want to listen to Beat It.

PYT is the standout star for me on this one but they are all great.

very thrilling

Smells like goat to me

Ok, if his life and legacy hadn’t taken the turn that it did this album would still be a banger. It’s so smooth and silky. However listening to PYT was…. uncomfy. I can see how it took the 80s by storm!!

Lowkey surprised myself by knowing every song in here already minus the last one, but that just speaks to the feat this album undertook in aiming to make a record entirely comprised of hits. Was very interesting to read about the historical importance of the album at the time. Wish they played songs like this at the club still. I can imagine how fun it must’ve been to bust a move to Baby Be Mine 😞

A legendary album. But you can’t make me cringe as hard as I did during the McCartney/Jackson banter and get five stars.

Good album! While I don't love every song, the ones that aren't bangers are still catchy and/or dancey enough to make this almost perfect. But not quite. I will happily keep listening to the hits, but I won't be in a great hurry to relisten to the album in full. It's a 4.5!

Ah, oof, it's amazing pop music, mostly utterly brilliant with a couple of clangers (no one needs The Girl Is Mine and it peters out kinda floppily after being so strong and ordered in such an engaging way for almost the whole thing). It's so tied up in my past. I love the intros (Billie Jean!), outros, nonsense "youa vegetable!" Also tho it's not just PYT that sits different now, and it'sgard yo feel the wild abandon it was all about. Oh Michael, you talented creepy pedo. I think that review Felix shared can't be bettered tbh. Classic album, but pedo. But with some reticence I'm giving it a 4.

Nice to hear some of MJs less well known songs. I enjoyed PYT and the paul mc cartney duet along with all of the bangers.

Bangers, obviously.

The problem with having pretty much 3 of the most iconic songs of the era on your album is that people will automatically compare all the other songs to them. Another problem (well, not sure if it's a problem but whatever) is that you're gonna have people calling the album the greatest album of all time just on the basis of those 3 songs. And of course both happen to this album. It does have one of the best 3 song runs of all time with Thriller-Beat it-Billie Jean, although I doubt that most people who think it is have heard Doin' the Cockroach-Cowboy Dan-Trailer Trash by Modest Mouse. Yeah, the rest of the album isn't really on that level but there is still some amazing songs. Wanna be Startin' Something is an incredible intro with the massive Disco Grooves and awesome synths, P.Y.T is just plain fun and Human Nature is honestly one of his best songs. Gorgeous, smooth, sexy ballad, amazing vocal performance and just stunning production. The other songs I could kinda take or leave. Lady in my Life and Baby be Mine are a little bland, especially the former, and the Girl is Mine is just.... ughh. I hate that song so much, it's all the worst things about 80s music combined. Dated drums? Check. Bland soft rock production? Check. Corny lyrics? Check. Lowkey creepy and kinda sexist? Check. But that's enough complaining, the album is great but everyone calling it the best album ever or something is taking it too far.

A great album to wake up to. Yesterday’s, Richard howley was a bit slow to start the day. But now that I am up and about it’s a great album. Different albums for different parts of the day? 4 stars for this wake upper.

This album is strange to me because it has just straight up classics mixed in with just some real turds. The one wil Paul McCartney just sucks. I honestly want to drop a star just for that one.

Q and Michael defining 1982. Solid stuff

Pretty good

Very good album, full of total bangers. Should be a 5 but he gets -1 for being an alleged nonce.

I think I might have to controversially give this album 4 stars. There are 4 good songs on here (I'm also counting Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'), the rest is filler or actively painful to listen to (looking at you, The Girl Is Mine). Then there's the whole pedo thing... at least he no longer actively profits from our streams?

Quite enjoyable, songs outside the big hits held my interest better than most.

Stone classic. Point off for The Girl Is Mine and being a pedo. I’m not listening to Thriller itself outside of Halloween but so many of these songs are undeniable.

This was a pleasant surprise on a Monday morning. I knew and already liked 6/9 songs, and the remaining three, were easy to listen to if not as catchy.

es el rey del pop que más se puede decir 4/5

A >4 star album with at least three 5 star songs.

May be up there with mega nouces like jimmy savile but you can’t argue he is the king of pop. This album is in his midsummer madness era, he’s giving knight is shiny armour on the cover. But his suit of armour is just a crisp white two pice with a zipper tee. Lock up your kids, daughters sons anything is on the plate for this knight With an album having so many bangers on it, sometimes you are blessed by one making it into people Timeless hits. We could argue for a while about which hit is timeless but for myself I would say P.Y.T is definitely the song on the album that can be listen for years to come

All bangers

Full of Bops!! But some songs were a bit slow for my taste

Actually decent!

9.2/10 Wow, what an album! So many hits on one album is insane. Mixed in with some solid slow jams that I hadn’t heard before. Incredible album

66/1001 :: Michael Jackson - Thriller Heard before? ✅ Would I revisit? ✅ Rating: 6 Fav Tracks: Billie Jean, Beat It, Thriller Listen before you die: Yes. Literally every person who grew in the 80s had a copy of Thriller on vinyl at their house. And as you probably know It’s the top selling album of all time. How is this possible? I listened today it’s not a perfect by any means. Not even close. I will admit that the back-to-back-to-back of Thriller, Beat It and Billy Jean in the middle of the album is sublime. Like really fucking awesome. PYT is also really great. I had to check the credits to see if Rick James played on this song because it was filthy funky. Speaking of contributions Quincy Jones does a masterful production job here even if I think a lot of the choices made were timely versus timeless. Lastly, I love Sir Paul but the Paul McCartney song is bad. He helped Michael made a bad song and then bought his music from under him. Guess it happens like that sometimes…

Well, it's hard to think of a more popular album, but does that make it good? Certainly it comes as no surprise that the stand out tracks are "Thriller", "Beat it" and "Billy Jean" (with some help from Van Halen on the solos). But the rest of the album surfs that line between soul/R&B/Pop, some tracks being more successful than others. Overall it is an easy listen, but I wouldn't qualify it as great.

The funky nonce!

Amazing that almost every track is a hit. Exquisite production. Dipped into the handful of less popular ones, but weren't really my. jam.

beeb it

Most of the album is pretty good but maybe that’s because I liked Bad more. Then it’s got Thriller, Beat It, and Billie Jean in a row.

This album was massive when it came out. Hard to say if the sound/production was influenced by the 80s, or if the 80s sounded the way they did because of this album. Definitely belongs on the list but, it's a bit too mainstream for my taste.

And here it is, quite possibly the biggest album of all time, waiting for me at album number 920. I've already reviewed Michael Jackson's other two albums on this list, giving five stars to Off the Wall, and four stars to Bad. We had Thriller on vinyl when I was a kid, and though I remember looking at this album sleeve many, many times, I don't think I've ever listened to the whole thing. I know five songs on this album really well, but the other four tracks should be knew to me, unless I've forgotten them. My gut tells me this is going to be a five-star album, but nothing is set in stone, not even Thriller! Thriller wasn't quite the five-star masterpiece that I thought it was going to be, but it was still really good. My high hopes felt immediately justified, when I got sucked in the minute "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" kicked off. The production and arrangements on that song were just perfect. Those horns, the bass line, and the drums all sounded perfect, and then ton top of that, you get Michael Jackson's vocals. I could see him in my head, just putting his whole body into his singing, dancing, and letting himself be consumed by the music. The disco remnants on this lead-off track were excellent, and I was glad to see them carry over to "Baby Be Mine," which was the first song on the album I wasn't familiar with. "Baby Be Mine" sounded so smooth, and I loved the bass groove, the punchy horns, and the rich synthesizers. "The Girl Is Mine" was another song I wasn't familiar with, and it wound up being my least favorite song on the album. The dreamy sound didn't really land with me, and it felt like it sucked the oxygen out of the room, and the lyric "the doggone girl is mine" is terrible. Who uses the word 'doggone?' What an awful choice. I love Sir Paul McCartney, but his presence on this song just didn't do anything for me. "Thriller" isn't one of my favorites on this album, but the production, guitars, synthesizers, and drum machines are great. For some reason, I just don't love the vocals and lyrics on this song. Still, it's really fun, but even though it's one of Michael Jackson's most popular songs, it's just not one of my favorites. "Beat It" is really good too, and my favorite thing about it is that Michael Jackson shows just how versatile of a performer he is. As the King of Pop, he can throw down on a rock song too. The main guitar riff is excellent, but Eddie Vedder's solo steals the show. For my money, "Billie Jean" is the best song on the album. That string arrangement is excellent, and the bass and percussion are perfect. Michael Jackson's vocals are at the top of their game on this song, and "Billie Jean" just oozes his personality as a performer. It's just an awesome sound, with tons of little treats for your ears, snuck in behind the overall melody. What a great song. "Human Nature" was another song that I wasn't familiar with, but I really loved the synthesizer arrangements. "P.Y.T." is really excellent. Those synthesized backing vocals are awesome, the lead and bass guitars are excellent, the overall beat is insanely catchy, and the synthesizers punch things up in all the right places. With "The Lady in My Life," I felt like Thriller went out with a whimper. For such a fun album, the slower songs on this album were mostly a snooze to me. But even with a few duds, Thriller is still a really good album, and I can't believe it took me this long to listen to all of it.

Loses a star for his unsavoury conduct

This album must've gone crazy in the 80's. Michael Jackson really is the king of pop. I really liked "Thriller" and "Beat it", and the rest of the songs are pretty good too. 4/5

well, its THE album

Classic album. Still a bunch of hits even 40+ years later.

Even if this album was just the song Thriller, it still would be fantastic.

all his bangers in a single album, mf had bills to pay

Can’t deny the talent here. Falls off in quality at the end but otherwise solid album

It's famous for a reason, even the weaker songs have charm to them. And of course this album has Thriller, possibly the most well known song in the world.

I put MJ in the same category as ABBA, in that, the hits are so well known and so over-played that it is hard to view an album objectively. That said, Thriller is clearly a classic. Bits of it are twee, dated, and downright odd...but the hits, and even the songs right below them, are just great. The album has good flow, and the hits have remained so for good reason - they still sound great. Solid 4.

These songs are so sewn into the culture at this point that it’s tough to review Thriller on its merits. I tried to listen with fresh ears to some success. Thriller for example is such a wild number if you try listening to it as if for the first time! Such a fun concept - it remains fresh and exciting after all these years. After a couple of listens, I’m amazed at how much I enjoy this album given the ubiquity of these songs (though radio play seems to have dropped off significantly in the 21st century 👀). Honestly I think this is about as perfect a pop music album that you could wish for. Though the production shows it’s age, Jackson’s enormous talent endures. His style is utterly unique, and such an accomplishment in music should be recognised. Those who score this album a 1/5 are just “ignorant”. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Очень много слышал об этом альбоме но ожидания не оправдались альбом классный послушал бы еще раз но местами однотипный и скучный, мне он не настолько понравился чтобы оценивать его как шедевр

Some all-time greats here, which still sound just as good as you remember them: "Wanna Be Startin' Something," "Thriller," "Beat It," "Billie Jean," "PYT." And some songs like "The Girl Is Mine," which sounds even hokier than you probably thought back then. On those great songs alone, there's probably an argument that this is one of the best albums of all time, and I can objectively understand that argument. But music is ultimately subjective, and while I might smile nostalgically when I hear a line like "Show them how funky and strong is your fight," Jackson just never did it for me. And besides, he stole that tune from poor, long-suffering Weird Al Yankovic! ;-)

Banger, no notes. Wouldn't listen to it regularly, however.

wanna be starting something - postane repetitive nakon 6. puta kad ponovi isti stih, dobar beat, tko ti je rasplakao curu damn, "youre a vegetable / they eat off of you" ?????????, imam feeling da je pjesma predugacka za ovoliko repetativnih stihova, jel iz ovog potice mamase mamasa mamacusa ?? baby be mine - haha 420 haha, kjut, lijepi stihovi the girl is mine - doggone ?, uuu fight, ovo je onak dosadnija verzija lagala nas mala od tosea i tonija, svida mi se pricanje usred pjesme thriller - fali mi music video al nije mi se dalo gledat 15 min toga, jaako kul prica i neobicna promjena teme u odnosu na pjesme do sad beat it - ova mi je najdraza lowkey, ne volim tolko ljubavne pjesme billie jean - a klasik sta rec, zanimljivo da je pjesma s ovakvom tematikom postala toliki hit i toliki pop staple human nature - ne kuzim pricu bas tbh, mid p.y.t. - funky, cudan naslov given the allegations..... the lady in my life - sweet, malo horny ali to je okej overall - iskreno mislila sam da ce biti bolji, osim hitova (thriller, beat it, billie jean) koji su fakat dobri, ostatak albuma je malo eh

Not my favorite album of his but still a classic. A few throw away songs but the bulk of the album is bangers.

Oh, growing up is such a thing... When young, I remember that I despised Jacko and this kind of "commercial" music, even if I had just heard the hit singles (to be fair, in the case of this artist there are a lot of them). Then, suddenly, you're an adult and you cannot do this anymore for some reason. Something tells you that if this is respected, it is for a reason and that it's probably good. Also, you don't want to make bold statements without a proper listening. This kind of attitude feels like the *right* one, but at the same time feels boring. I kind of miss the rebellious teenage days where you would insult commercial music trying to be as as edgy as possible. Rants aside, this explains what I feel about this album. Yeah, for sure, is good, it has a lot of well-known songs and I really like to hear Beat It or Thriller at a party. But at the same time I feel like an imposter when listening to it. It's an absolute classic? Of course it is. Does it move me as much as Slayer, Blondie or Ornette Coleman? Of course it does not.

Beat It, Thriller, and Billie Jean are the obvious highlights of the album. I especially like Beat It. I really like Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' as well, Human Nature's okay, PYT and This Girl is Mine gave off some really weird vibes though. I can't do half stars so I'll give it a 4 but it's closer to 3.5 for me.

It's -Thriller-. What more can you say about it that hasn't been said already? Three great bops, with a few decent songs that are just romantic (and sometimes problematic) slop. I appreciate that this album has been masterfully engineered to be as catchy as possible.

Overall an enjoyable album due to the big hits But I was expecting more thriller and less filler 4 ⭐️

There’s no denying this is a monstrous album. But I only really dig “Wanna, Beat it, Billie Jean, Thriller, and PYT. 1001 alum worthy: yes 106/197

An album full of bangers. Every track feels like a hit. It’s essential listening for understanding pop and the 80s in general, not just for the songs themselves but for the way it shaped music, videos, and stardom. Slick production, iconic performances, and an energy that still holds up decades later.

Excellent 80’s pop.

Typ ganska ass bortsett från hitlåtarna

Overall this is an objectively great album. A lot of hits came out of it, and you have the "Thriller" "Beat It" "Billie Jean" run in the middle. I love those tracks, and along with "Wanna Be Starting Somethin' " those are definitely the standouts. The rest are good and memorable but in a class just below the hits. The guitar and bass is great throughout, and the poppy drums and synth really do still sound great today. The conversation in "The Girl Is Mine" is... pretty wild. There are a couple songs that just aren't as good here. So I think Thriller clocks in a 4 out of 5 for me. Still a fun listen to this day.

There is a bit more filler on this then it's reputation would suggest but still a classic despite the reputation of the artist 4*

Human nature is my sleeper hit. Adult contemporary gold

I don’t wanna rate this 3, so it gets a 4. Also classic. You can’t beat “Beat It”.

Not my favorite but well done all around.

I mean come on. I’d argue this is the most famous album ever made. Argue with a wall. Not my favorite, so I’d probably give it a 4, but anything less feels blasphemous

A little heavy on ballads, but it's a masterful production of a great performer in his prime.

The doggone girl is mine

One of the greatest pop albums ever

Great pop music and a really bad song with sir Paul

Can only go to a 4/5 rating though because of the abomination that’s is ‘The Girl Is Mine’ with McCartney. Legitimately insane that it was the lead single. But everything else here is good to great, even if it’s not that cohesive. I probably always preferred Bad as an album overall. But here even the two deeper cuts that didn’t get released as singles (Baby Be Mine, and The Lady In My Life) are two of my favourites off the album.

I've always thought this was one of the most overrated albums of all time. It's good, but it often gets mentioned in the greatest of all time conversations, and that I do not see. The album starts off pretty well with "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'", a good song that does overstay it's welcome a little bit (the single version actually shines here) . The next two songs are god awful. "Thriller" spawned one of the greatest music videos of all time, but taken out of context, it's a very mediocre song and the Vincent Price bits don't make nearly as much sense. "Beat It" and "Billy Jean" are both pretty great. "Human Nature" is okay, but leans a bit too far into yacht rock territory. "P.Y.T." is a good song with lyrics that have aged as well as a glass of milk. The closing track is awful. So really, we're talking about an album where 1/3 is great, 1/3 is awful, 1/3 is merely decent. I'll settle on a low 4 stars.

Brooooo I know the dance for this and I took part in that thrill the world flash mob

Classic, somewhat tarnished by his decline.

Does this need an explanation? I didn’t think so. It’s not perfect but it’s good. Very good Choice cut: The Girl is Mine

The King of Pop for sure.

Some of the greatest singles. And pretty unremarkable ones. The deep cuts are forgotten for a reason. I'll put a 4/5 and leave it at that. https://youtu.be/ZGPSN6UdERw

Cuz this is Thriller 7.5/10

8/10 It’s a Pop album

Nästan ett perfekt popalbum. Byt ut The Girl is mine och kasta ut Eddie van Halen

Not bad! I really didn’t think too much about it when it first came out, but the mix is really good. Pretty corny lyrics though

Still very listenable. This album made me want to be a pop star when I grow up. I was so close! It's true, there are some bad tracks. Otherwise, would be a 5. I had this on vinyl. I remember being obsessed with the liner notes, but was disappointed to learn that Michael Jackson didn't necessarily write his own songs. Lots of cool robot voices on PYT.

Undeniably iconic

3.5 stars. It’s hard to not give this 4 or 5 straight up because, objectively, I GET IT. Like it’s crazy that many iconic songs came off one album in back to back tracks like that, but they’re so iconic I’m a little tired of listening to them sometimes.

Much like Bad, I wanted to dislike this album, but I don't. The slower songs are weak, particularly The Girl is Mine. For the rest though, I can't help tapping my feet. Obviously the man himself was a deeply flawed character who did some awful things, but judging purely on the strength of the music, I think this album is a four.

Amazing record. Only hits on this album.

positves: + a banger of an album + loads of songs i knew + had a dance party in the shower negatives: - its by michael jackson who has questionable claims against him - some songs were a bit too long and kind of dragged and felt repetitive - so shorter songs but more songs would have been preferred my favourite songs: billie jean, thiller, human nature and beat it

3.5 stars. It’s hard to not give this 4 or 5 straight up because, objectively, I GET IT. Like it’s crazy that many iconic songs came off one album in back to back tracks like that, but they’re so iconic I’m a little tired of listening to them sometimes.

There are, like, five great tracks on here and four cringey ones.

This used to be pure joy. Now it’s something else. The music is still the music. What’s always been infectious and transcendent is still infectious and transcendent. But now there’s other emotions too. Complicated, confusing, and ultimately icky emotions. The joy is compromised. And if this record is designed for peak fun as its sole reward, what’s left in its wake?

Let's be real, it's 4 stars

Obviously I have already heard like 50% of this album before. Billie Jean is probably my favourite Jackson song already too. Christ, McCartney's track was fucking dire though, eh? What a vapid hole. Still, it's pretty good overall, obviously.

Hey, play me something I can dance to! I've complained about some of these 80s pop albums feeling flat - by contrast, this one comes out of the gate with something synthetic but fun and high energy. But then we just get kinda more of the same, and then the Real Stinker. You know which one. And then the big hits. You know which ones. I feel like you don't have to say a lot about this album. It's not 5 stars because it could be better, but that's not to say it's not great.

[4.5/5] Final impression: It's the best-selling album of all time for a reason. Listened to on Spotify [https://open.spotify.com/album/2ANVost0y2y52ema1E9xAZ]. Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' - I just know this is going to be an album of no misses. Solid start. Baby Be Mine - Fantastic song. No notes. That Girl Is Mine - Probably the weakest, or the least to my tastes, of this album. Which is a shame, cause I like Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson, but this ones too syrupy for me. Thriller - How do you summarize a song as culturally influential as this. I mean, its perfect? *Beat It - me when I'm about to beat Off Billie Jean - Seared into my brain because of eternal reruns of that one Simpson's episode. Aside from that, its a fantastic song. Love the instrumentals towards the end. Human Nature - Not as much my taste, but the vocals are solid (as expected). Kind of irresistible the longer it goes on. P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) - The instrumentals kick ass here. The Lady in My Life - Good, not great. Overall notes: I mean, there's a reason they had to raffle off tickets to his funeral. A lot of great standouts here, but some tracks that I just don't have strong affinity for.

This is without doubt an album you need to hear before you die. It set the tone for pop albums for 30 years and there isnt a better three song run than Thriller, Billie Jean and Beat it. The tunes, the production, the music and the voice are all top tier. Some of the slower tunes are not my thing and feel a bit icky in hindsight. This is a 4.5 album rounded down to 4 for the child molesting.

Always loved his songs, listened to this album during a trip in Romania. Played it so much it made my dad insult Michael's "golden balls"

There's so many 5 star songs in this album, and even the slower songs are executed well executed, however I did feel the last 3 songs bring down the overall album from 5-star to 4-star.

I have never been a fan of The Girl is Mine, specifically. I think there were a couple of weaker tracks, but weak track by MJ is someone else's one hit wonder. It doesn't hit a perfect 5 for me, but it's pretty close. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The B Sides are the best part of the album

So , I’m going to start by separating the art from the artist ; This is without a doubt a great album with some tracks that still sound as fresh today as when released. Others sound like the 80s. An album that coincided with the advent of music videos which no doubt helped propel this album skywards up the charts. Game changing stuff. I will caveat that MJs grunts and crotch grabbing was unnecessary!!

I’m admittedly not the biggest Michael Jackson fan and I went into this thinking I wouldn’t like it at all. But listening to this album all the way through… it’s impossible to not be amazed by this guy’s talent. I can’t give this less than a 4

This is a big separating the artist from the art album. Several bops (PYT, Thriller, Billie Jean, Beat It) and is overall a good album despite everything

Three fantastic songs "Thriller", "Beat It" and "Billie Jean" but I never like much of the rest on the album. Now the others seem dated and questionable based on Michael’s later life. Still gets a 4 but no way does it deserve a 5 star.

If you view it as a whole album it may not be strong collectively because the songs were singles. That meaning that each song had its own style and already had its own vibe prior to it being put together

-1 for inclusion of improv with Paul McCartney

I’m sure I have nothing to say about the music or context of this album that hasn’t already been said - so that means I can speak about it from a wholly personal perspective! To me, this is a pop album 5/5, and just a general album 4/5. I think it’s soooo hard to write an engaging pop album that has multiple angles and moods and still keeps my interest. Very few dance/pop artists also exhibit such a perfect sense of how to be additive/subtractive as a means to perfectly craft a good song to dance to. Chic did it well, Daft Punk’s “Around The World” is probably the perfect example of it - and obviously “Billie Jean” is up there too. Man Quincy Jones was otherworldly. I do think the first few songs on here are the most skippable, if you had to do so. “The Girl Is Mine” is probably my favorite non-mega-hit of the bunch. Paul McCartney was also in his bag for a good 15 years after the end of the Beatles, and he doesn’t disappoint here. It’s clear they’re both smiling and having fun during the recording of the song! Lovely pop album known for its iconography and ways in which it was culturally significant as much as it’s known for its music at this point - which helps to forget that you’ve got a first couple songs to get through before you get to the meat of why this record broke all records.

It's not a 5 because of the Paul McCartney song. It's a tremendous album and objectively it is a 5 I think I can't get there because so many of these songs are so ubiquitous that I can't imagine not having heard them 1000s of times.

Classic. No misses.

Turns out I've never listened to this in it entirely before....I know this because my fucking god "the girl is mine" is a horrible creepy song that should be erased from existence. Apart from that rest of the album slaps

In today’s world of declining sales and fragmented audiences, it is almost impossible to imagine how much this one album dominated and united the culture.

As mush as I hate to admit it this is a good album

The funny thing is that the album has a different sound in my memories. But anyway, it's if not the most but definitely one of the best pop albums ever recorded. Everlasting classic.

Highlights: Billie Jean, Thriller, Human Nature. In a nutshell: a synthpop/post disco guilty pleasure “I told Michael that we needed a black rock 'n' roll tune — a black 'My Sharona' — and a begging tune for the album… [Michael] came back with 'Beat It' and Rod [Temperton] came back with 'The Lady in My Life.' Rod also brought in 'Thriller' and Michael sang his heart out on it. At one point during the session the right speaker burst into flames, which none of us had ever seen before. How's that for a sign?" Quincy Jones, “Quincy Jones blogs about working with Michael Jackson” by Eric Ditzian (MTV.com published 30/6/2009) Michael has decent songwriting prowess here and powerful vocals, but the bulk of the praise has to go to co-producer Quincy Jones. An in-studio genius. Overall: 7/10

The singles on this album are all so strong. However, some of the deep cuts don't hit as hard. It's easy to see how this became so popular as there is something on it for everyone. 8/10

I don't quite the album all the way through, but has some all timers Will I listen to again: 86%

Tiene temazos

Excellent production, but the songs are all a bit too long? I know it's a testament of the times, but they can all lose 1 - 2 minutes of repetition. The speaking parts are absolutely horrible. The hits are hits for a reason, and overall it's a nice record. But I won't be revisiting this one.

I had to deduct at least one star for The Girl is Mine. Shockingly wretched.

This album has been inescapable my entire adult life, and Billie Jean and Beat It will be piped in to my retirement home. But I had forgotten, if I ever knew, how much of it is pure 70s cheese--I doubt even Sir Paul remembers The Girl is Mine (the first single!) It's as if the 80s arrive over the course of the album. I always liked Human Nature, though, and I have to give points for Eddie. That gets it to a 4, barely.

paul should be in jail for the girl is mine

Hell of an album!

Some awesome songs, but also some filler

It's pretty good. Not really my taste. But you really can't deny those hits.

I’ve never been a Jackson fan, even before the raging noncery became apparent, but there is no denying that this is a good album even if it’s not my kind of music. Best ever made? Not even close. Good enough? Sure, why not. Pretty Young Thing, though? That’s right officer, this one right here.

Its thriller. its insane how many iconic songs are right after the other on this one album. I will say however that it does have a few misses despite it having one of the best 5 song runs in music history.

Não é o melhor álbum do Michael.

One of the best albums of all time. Minus 1 star for the McCartney nonsense.

The best MJ album. Still a couple misses (fuck Paul McCartney) albeit a great reminder of his influence on pop as a whole and a joy to relisten to. All time multifaceted king of molestation and pop music.

Not much to be said about this one, as its reputation precedes it. It’s great, but it’s also not nearly as funky as his previous effort. They are both great in their own way.

Billie Jean still remains one of the most ??? huge singles to be released lmao.

3.5 star

thriller is weak without its video, PYT didn’t age well, paul and michael’s fight was cringy… ❤️

This is probably THE MJ album

Absolute favorite from childhood.

Would I ever put this album on on my own? No. Am I glad it came up in this list? Yes. MJ was a legend for a reason

ja, das ist ein(der) Meilenstein der Musik

Thought just the Bassline on "Billie Jean" and the solo on "Beat It" would be enough for 5 stars, bust the rest of the album hasn't aged as well.

Kinda a begrudging 4/5 here. Dunno why I'm resistant to giving it a 4, but I am. Just can't justify a 3. Think it's just I'm not that big into Jackson, and when I don't care for one of his songs, I just really don't care for it. I liked this more than Bad. The softer songs are generally better than on Bad, even if I'd rather leave them than take them. The song with McCartney's a little too cute for me though. The three song run of Thriller, Beat It, and Billie Jean is legendary though, and some other songs are solid (PYT, The Lady In My Life). The first couple tracks I did feel were a tad long though. Human Nature is probably my least favorite track. A very low 4. Legendary highs, but most of the rest of the album is just solid.

The big man at his height. Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' is a fantastic kickoff track -- love the funk adjacent pop and high energy to get things going out of the gate. The peaks are really high on here... Thriller > Beat It > Billie Jean is an amazing sequence. Quick downturn into Human Nature (not my favorite here), before P.Y.T kicks things off again with a fun completely 80s sounding jam. The Lady in My Life is a fine soulful outro; can't go too wrong with slapped bass and quality vocals. This is a jam deserving of all the multi-platinum status. High 4 / 5 for personal enjoyment.

This album was very similar to Bad which we just had a week or so ago. Lots of hits which I already knew and they all went hard. Beat it is an incredible song and PYT was one that I have heard before, but I have never given it the respect it deserves I was absolute jamming to it. Not the biggest fan of the slow songs but the high energy songs bring so much heat

This album is chock full of jams which are all legendary songs. The more R&B focused songs kinda blow (Baby Be Mine, The Girl is Mine (sorry Paul), Human Nature, Thriller (the song) is honestly one of my favorite songs of all time. I still watch the music video every once in awhile. Thriller -> Beat It -> Billie Jean is a legendary 3 song run holy hell. Sucks Michael Jackson turned out so damn weird. Solid 4.

I liked it (: My favorite from the ones I didn't know is "Wanna be Startin' Something"

You would be foolish to rate this anything under an 8/10. It's prime MJ putting his soul onto wax. Every song is at the bare minimum good, and at the maximum amazing

who let paul act so gay

Yeah, well it's Thriller, obviously it's good. But being really, really honest, its got three of the best pop songs ever written and then also half a dozen more completely fine but unremarkable tracks.

The king of pop for a reason. Not sure there was an actual miss on this album. 4.5/5

I always assumed Thriller was one of the best albums of the decade because I was familiar with the singles. Taking time to listen to it entirely, it is a bit weird. There are some of the best pop songs of the 80s, but mixed in between them are terrible, almost unlistenable songs.

It's time for the popular question: should we separate the art from the artist? The artist of discussion here has a thriller alright, right on his Neverland Ranch(and sadly, he did beat it). However, the artist is also dead, so perhaps it's not worth discussing anymore. There isn't much else to say: It's a great album with four of his biggest hits, but I don't see how this entire album led to it being the best selling album of all time. Favorite Track: "Thriller".

Thriller, Beat It, and Billie Jean for sure carry this whole album. I don't care much for the other songs but in terms of pop music, there are few songs that are as iconic as those 3, and for good reason. They're amazing pop songs will really good production. The rest of the album doesn't really do it for me though.

This was fun! It feels so much like the 80s that my first hunch is that it doesn’t age well, but then I realize so much popular music right now is directly taken from this record. The most recent Bon Iver album sounds like this in songs, the Goose album has these elements. It’s really cool and unique.

Classic

Singles on this album were all time classics. The rest was just ok. One of the 11 cassettes I got from Columbia house for a penny when I was a kid.

Almost every song is like "ah yeah, this is a classic for a reason". The run from The Girl is Mine (which i might be alone in loving-it's so fun) -> Thriller (banger) -> Beat It (haven't heard it in a while; forgot how genuinely good it is) -> Billie Jean (unreal bassline) is all-timer. Extremely listenable all the way through. 4.5/5

I'm with peytie the Girl is Mine is the greatest song of all time

Bon ok le début est un peu chiant mais l'enchainement Thriller/Beat It/Billie Jean C'EST QUAND MÊME QUELQUE CHOSE HEIN.

It's undeniably catchy. There's some gems in here that are the pinnacle of pop at the time. I don't know if it's a masterpiece but it makes total sense to be on the list and it's fun to listen to.

I love the idea is Sir Paul and MJ fighting over a woman

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Some good bops

found myself focusing more on quincy jones’ incredible production than mj this time around. mostly in it for the hits here, which luckily make up 3/4 of the record.

Pretty cool

the bangers you know and some fine songs you're perfectly okay not hearing

Le roi de la pop avec 3 titres sur cet album qui sont des classiques. Les autres chansons en revanche ne m'intéressent pas trop, elles ne m'ont pas fait me lever de ma chaise.

It's a treat to listen to this back to front, which I hadn't before. It's stacked with all-time bangers. A cohesive, blockbuster pop statement. Exploding with charisma. The production is razor-sharp too; "Billie Jean" in particular is just perfect. (I can't get into it about Michael Jackson every time one of his albums comes up, so I won't. Death of the author and all that.) I do have to say, did not enjoy the cutesy dialogue at the end of "The Girl is Mine".

saccharine pop goodness. he’s the king of pop for a reason. not every song on this record does it for me, but it all makes sense and i get it. the bangers bang hard.

I don't know why people thought he was a god, but this is a good album.

can't top an OG

I was familiar with (and for the most part already liked) seven out of nine songs.

I mean it’s a total classic, isn’t it! (Again fully separating art from artist.) Just full of bangers, with Wanna Be Startin Something or PYT perhaps my favourite. (4.5 stars)

Prime Jackson.

very good i love micheal mh baby

The obvious stuff. The title track, Billie Jean and Beat It are all bangers. For the most part, this album is a classic but the duet with McCartney and the ballads fall flat. Highly influential. It's huge. Solid but Purple Rain is better.
