What else needs to be say about this album? Even with a dud like "The Girl is Mine" (and to a lesser extent, "The Lady in My Life" and "Baby Be Mine"), it's one of the greatest of all time, even with everything we know about Michael Jackson now. The controversy around him will inevitably fade, but the songs will remain.

3.5 stars. It’s hard to not give this 4 or 5 straight up because, objectively, I GET IT. Like it’s crazy that many iconic songs came off one album in back to back tracks like that, but they’re so iconic I’m a little tired of listening to them sometimes.

Much like Bad, I wanted to dislike this album, but I don't. The slower songs are weak, particularly The Girl is Mine. For the rest though, I can't help tapping my feet. Obviously the man himself was a deeply flawed character who did some awful things, but judging purely on the strength of the music, I think this album is a four.

Thriller has 4 or 5 of the greatest pop songs of all time packed into a tight 42 minute package. However, some of the (synth-heavy) production sounds dates and overall it seems to fall short as a cohesive “album”.

On influence and impact alone this album is an all-time great. Fortunately, it's also an all-time great on musical merits. Richly layered, rhythmically complex, and wide ranging in its influences, Thriller really is quite an experience.

There are, like, five great tracks on here and four cringey ones.

This used to be pure joy. Now it’s something else. The music is still the music. What’s always been infectious and transcendent is still infectious and transcendent. But now there’s other emotions too. Complicated, confusing, and ultimately icky emotions. The joy is compromised. And if this record is designed for peak fun as its sole reward, what’s left in its wake?

Obviously I have already heard like 50% of this album before. Billie Jean is probably my favourite Jackson song already too. Christ, McCartney's track was fucking dire though, eh? What a vapid hole. Still, it's pretty good overall, obviously.

Maaaaaaan. What a sick album to go through again. The compositions, the vocal dynamics, the groovy beats. Overall great production.

Hey, play me something I can dance to! I've complained about some of these 80s pop albums feeling flat - by contrast, this one comes out of the gate with something synthetic but fun and high energy. But then we just get kinda more of the same, and then the Real Stinker. You know which one. And then the big hits. You know which ones. I feel like you don't have to say a lot about this album. It's not 5 stars because it could be better, but that's not to say it's not great.

Thriller - How do you summarize a song as culturally influential as this. I mean, its perfect? *Beat It - me when I'm about to beat Off Billie Jean - Seared into my brain because of eternal reruns of that one Simpson's episode. Aside from that, its a fantastic song. Love the instrumentals towards the end. Human Nature - Not as much my taste, but the vocals are solid (as expected). Kind of irresistible the longer it goes on. P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) - The instrumentals kick ass here. The Lady in My Life - Good, not great. Overall notes: I mean, there's a reason they had to raffle off tickets to his funeral. A lot of great standouts here, but some tracks that I just don't have strong affinity for.

The most sold album of all time is also the most signified! Although, once you get past that maybe you can appreciate how perfectly all these songs stand on their own. Will revisit later

If any album had to be the highest selling of all time, this is a pretty good album to pick. I've never understood why people like the Paul McCartney song, I think it is pretty boring, but besides that this album has some all time bangers on it. Low 5.

I’m the guy who did not own this back in 1983. I maybe listened to the album once. My plan was to listen with an open mind. Great opener, and then two filler tracks. But then…killer song after killer song. Amazing production. Fantastically performed. It is what it is for a reason.

This is without doubt an album you need to hear before you die. It set the tone for pop albums for 30 years and there isnt a better three song run than Thriller, Billie Jean and Beat it. The tunes, the production, the music and the voice are all top tier. Some of the slower tunes are not my thing and feel a bit icky in hindsight. This is a 4.5 album rounded down to 4 for the child molesting.

Yes, apart from the Paul McCartney debacle, this album still sounds pretty good, I didn't think it was going to hold up, but some real classic tracks.

It has been years since I actually listened to the song Thriller as I was so freaked out by the spoken part in the middle as a child that I would flat out refuse to listen to it. It defo slaps tho

I do not condone his acts in his personal life. But we all KNOW this album changed the music industry and really helped the Black community. Certified Bop Banger Machine.

An interesting listen - I had always assumed his biggest songs were the ones parodied by Weird Al, so it was definitely weird seeing that Billie Jean is his most played song on spotify. A good song though. 2.5/5 stars.

Tightly produced by Quincy Jones, this album is 9 songs of tight funk-pop (& sometimes rock) perfection. In each song, Jackson sounds youthful but not juvenile & trite. The lyrics are filled with themes of paranoia and darkness within the ultimate emotion of love. Jackson completely understood how his voice could be used not only as a melodic tool, but a percussive one. In Thriller, his high pitched grunts and oohs and ahhs are interwoven in his melodic delivery. In the climax of Wanna Be Starting Something, the vocal pieces melt between his belting voice and Afro-beat chants. When MJ does rock with both Paul McCartney & Eddie Van Halen, he breaks late 70s rock's insistence of manly appearance with his boyish R&B swagger. I could talk more about this, but you should just listen to it.

Yes to Beat It, Thriller and Billie Jean, the rest can go and jump in the sea.

The opening track is quite good, but the chorus is too "nagging", in a way. You can't really fault the excellent trio of songs in the middle, but I'm not a fan of the other half of the album. I like Bad far more than this one.

It's ok. However this is my unpopular opinion. If Michael didn't change his race and turn himself into melting cheese, didn't have obvious mental issues and didn't squeak like a person that just stubbed their toe I don't think his music alone would have seen THAT much stardom

There's so many 5 star songs in this album, and even the slower songs are executed well executed, however I did feel the last 3 songs bring down the overall album from 5-star to 4-star.

the opposite of timeless, feels so corny and i hate the production. don't mind mccartney's singing but i dont like the song because jackson's singing is so annoying. theres a couple okay songs (baby be mine, pyt) but only billie jean is really interesting.

I am admittedly not a Michael Jackson fan, and this album reminds me why. I can’t stand the ultra 80s sounds with all the cheesy synths, bass, and terrible hard snare drum sound. I feel like every track hits the snare on the 2 and 4 and doesn’t let up for the whole song. Some songs also feel like they go on a little too long. Michael is overall a great singer/performer but his music just isn’t for me.

Probably the quintessential pop album.

I have never been a fan of The Girl is Mine, specifically. I think there were a couple of weaker tracks, but weak track by MJ is someone else's one hit wonder. It doesn't hit a perfect 5 for me, but it's pretty close. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The B Sides are the best part of the album

So , I’m going to start by separating the art from the artist ; This is without a doubt a great album with some tracks that still sound as fresh today as when released. Others sound like the 80s. An album that coincided with the advent of music videos which no doubt helped propel this album skywards up the charts. Game changing stuff. I will caveat that MJs grunts and crotch grabbing was unnecessary!!

Distinctly underwhelmed by this album. I had been expecting so much more given the hype. Clearly a few of the singles are massive songs and I can understand how this album was lauded over when it came out. It’s not necessarily that the songs have aged badly, or MJ’s reputation, but something didn’t really click for me and I didn’t feel the hype.

Hard to ignore that astonishing interview where Wacko confessed to sharing a bed with young children and was seemingly obliviously unaware that anyone would find this unnatural! The multiple sex abuse allegations and out of court settlements have forever tarnished his image. The album and the man are nothing short of massive cultural and musical icons and he should be applauded for his contribution to the advancement of black culture and shaping the future of pop music. Also the video to Thriller was iconic in itself. The hits from this album are good examples of pop music whilst I found the rest of it very underwhelming, including the cringe worthy duet with McCartney.

Big slice of bangers between 2 layers of cringe. Tbh, it was pretty much what I thought it would sound like (and the awful McCartney bit was in a way an added bonus, why, just why?). Minus point for being a paedo rule applied.

Nothing I can really add to this discussion. This album is wall to wall bangers. Thriller into Beat It into Billie Jean is a crazy sequence!

Doesn’t need much of an explanation. Some of the Michaels best songs. Best selling album of all time. Pop.

I’ve never actually listened to this album from start to finish before - only really focusing on the singles - but every song is a gem. And the production is stunning too. So much still to discover on the inevitable repeat listenings.

Can you separate the artist and his life from the art to evaluate it? No. I listened to the album. Billie Jean is a great song. Jackson was a monster. Ours is a society that gives celebrities access to whatever they want as if they were gods. This rating is for the whole picture, not an album in isolation.

I’m admittedly not the biggest Michael Jackson fan and I went into this thinking I wouldn’t like it at all. But listening to this album all the way through… it’s impossible to not be amazed by this guy’s talent. I can’t give this less than a 4

Great album with some variety and strong vocals by Michael. The number of solid songs in this album is amazing.

If you view it as a whole album it may not be strong collectively because the songs were singles. That meaning that each song had its own style and already had its own vibe prior to it being put together

Look, yes it’s MJ, The King of Pop, it has three incredibly famous tracks that are super catchy (although Chris Cornell’s cover of “Billie Jean” is far superior to the original and I will die on that hill), it is incredibly clean and polished pop/funk, and yes it is the most successful album of all time. But it just doesn’t do it for me. There’s some catchy stuff of here but the album as a whole, just not for me. Never adored MJ, probably never will. I can respect how he changed music but he’s just not my jam.

You could not get away from hearing this album when it was released. So many of his singles got huge air time from MTV. 80’s pop music-I won’t ever seek it out to listen but still know most of lyrics

Thriller-Beat It-Billie Jean has got to be the best 3 song run on any pop album ever. He was a dodgy bloke but an incredible musician. This deserves to be one of the biggest albums ever. 5 stars.

I’m sure I have nothing to say about the music or context of this album that hasn’t already been said - so that means I can speak about it from a wholly personal perspective! To me, this is a pop album 5/5, and just a general album 4/5. I think it’s soooo hard to write an engaging pop album that has multiple angles and moods and still keeps my interest. Very few dance/pop artists also exhibit such a perfect sense of how to be additive/subtractive as a means to perfectly craft a good song to dance to. Chic did it well, Daft Punk’s “Around The World” is probably the perfect example of it - and obviously “Billie Jean” is up there too. Man Quincy Jones was otherworldly. I do think the first few songs on here are the most skippable, if you had to do so. “The Girl Is Mine” is probably my favorite non-mega-hit of the bunch. Paul McCartney was also in his bag for a good 15 years after the end of the Beatles, and he doesn’t disappoint here. It’s clear they’re both smiling and having fun during the recording of the song! Lovely pop album known for its iconography and ways in which it was culturally significant as much as it’s known for its music at this point - which helps to forget that you’ve got a first couple songs to get through before you get to the meat of why this record broke all records.

It's not a 5 because of the Paul McCartney song. It's a tremendous album and objectively it is a 5 I think I can't get there because so many of these songs are so ubiquitous that I can't imagine not having heard them 1000s of times.

Not a fan of Michael Jackson at all. His singles are great! But I can't shake the thought of his pedophilia. Also I haven't heard a b-side of his that's anywhere a good as his singles. This album did have 4 of his biggest hits on it so I see why people consider it a great album, I rather listen to real funk and dance music than this 80s pop

I don’t enjoy highly produced sounds. This is a perfect example of those records. I also don’t enjoy gimmicks. Another fine example of that with this album.

In today’s world of declining sales and fragmented audiences, it is almost impossible to imagine how much this one album dominated and united the culture.

Rod also brought in 'Thriller' and Michael sang his heart out on it. At one point during the session the right speaker burst into flames, which none of us had ever seen before. In summary, this album is too popular for its own good, and too short when you remove the massively popular songs. Looking forward to more MJ though! 4 stars, would enjoy another listen - Holy 80s! - This is fun! Feels more timeless than Prince, despite the 80s instrumentation (especially bass) - A bit flat for me. I think it's just overplayed. But wild how huge these songs are - 2nd half is much stronger. Less overplayed (somehow Billie Jean sounds like a new song to me). Human Nature is good too.

Excellent production, but the songs are all a bit too long? I know it's a testament of the times, but they can all lose 1 - 2 minutes of repetition. The speaking parts are absolutely horrible. The hits are hits for a reason, and overall it's a nice record. But I won't be revisiting this one.

This was such a huge part of my childhood. I remember playing this record as a child, listening to the end of thriller when Vincent Price talks over and over again. Upon listening to this again and knowing a bit more now about the context when the album came out, this one changed the game. Made pop music and pop stars as we know it. Hit gold with this one.

I don't see how any album that has Thriller, Beat It, AND Billie Jean can't be given a 5. Even with the four dud songs, it still is undeniably one of the most influential albums of all time both on the music and video scene.

This album has been inescapable my entire adult life, and Billie Jean and Beat It will be piped in to my retirement home. But I had forgotten, if I ever knew, how much of it is pure 70s cheese--I doubt even Sir Paul remembers The Girl is Mine (the first single!) It's as if the 80s arrive over the course of the album. I always liked Human Nature, though, and I have to give points for Eddie. That gets it to a 4, barely.

Its thriller. its insane how many iconic songs are right after the other on this one album. I will say however that it does have a few misses despite it having one of the best 5 song runs in music history.

MJ isn’t quite my favorite but I do have to admire the back to back bangers on this, it really is incredible how he could just pump out pop hits like nothing.

The best MJ album. Still a couple misses (fuck Paul McCartney) albeit a great reminder of his influence on pop as a whole and a joy to relisten to. All time multifaceted king of molestation and pop music.

The whole thing is really good all the way through (some of it is cheesy but in a low-key good way) - it's capped in that it's both overplayed and it's structured weirdly, none of the songs flow that well together and it's obviously backloaded in a way that is a bit off-putting. So I am torn on this but I think it's closer to a 3-star album unfortunately.

Baby Be Mine’s instrumental legit sounds like it could be in Sonic 3 (game not movie). And people still wanna say MJ didn’t contribute to the soundtrack. Also let’s not understate Toto’s impact on this album. It’s not the whole band, they were just session musicians, yeah yeah whatever. Steve Porcaro wrote Human Nature and you can feel their vibe on this album. If you like this you genuinely might enjoy their debut album (Georgy Porgy is goated) or Toto IV (The Girl is Mine kind of reminds me of Rosanna or Waiting for Your Love). I would feel guilty if I didn’t acknowledge the pedo allegations and those definitely tainted my enjoyment of this album. But I cannot deny that this is insanely good music. But PYT aged like milk. Pretty medium, but I do like tambourine man

This is, by a huge margin, the biggest album in history. It sold 10 million over the next closest release, and 20 million over the next closest record, as in, not a greatest hits album. It sold over 60% more copies than any of its competitors. Clearly, this record matters. But, that is an artifact of its era. The 80's saw a rise in global reach for American culture, and especially the record industry. It was also just before the internet facilitated the fragmentation of media, of which music would be hit first. The MP3 meant that listening to (or downloading) a song over the internet was viable, even though dial-up. Anyway, my point is, I don' think anything can be this big in the foreseeable future. This is the peak of the monoculture. As for the music, it's solid. I'm not a Jackson fan, but it has a bright feeling to it and a refreshingly robust range for the time and genre, at least in its subject matter. I probably won't come back to it, but I liked it.

Have decided I am rating albums based on how much I enjoy rather than my critical opinion of them There are certain pieces of art I have sorta purposefully avoided because i feel like i have already absorbed them through cultural osmosis and they exist in this weird limbo of already knowing a ton about them but also having never interacted with them before... like the Godfather as a movie example or like Gravity's Rainbow for the books. where Godfather is like the most "movie" movie you know? This is essentially a faultless album with every song being very strong and iconic for a reason. A slight dip in the song The Girl is Mine with Paul McCartney but aside from that the album seemed to have a theme of starting lighter and delving into darker tones starting with Thriller, Billie Jean and Beat It. An easy 5/5 overall.

The King!! Started boppin' my head 10 seconds into Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' and didn't stop (Okay maybe just for the girl is mine). The definition of timeless music. The middle part of the album with probably 3 of the most massive iconic and timeless hits of ever produced probably won't ever be replicated.

I don't care if it's nostalgia or familiarity this is THE masterpiece of pop. It's lasted the test of time. Love it. First 5/5.

I was just starting high school when this came out, and I had been a DJ for a couple of years at that point, primarily at school and church dances, as well as the occasional private party. It was AWESOME to get to experience the release of this record and Prince "Purple Rain" and see the transformation of pop music that occurred as a result.

Thought just the Bassline on "Billie Jean" and the solo on "Beat It" would be enough for 5 stars, bust the rest of the album hasn't aged as well.

Kinda a begrudging 4/5 here. Dunno why I'm resistant to giving it a 4, but I am. Just can't justify a 3. Think it's just I'm not that big into Jackson, and when I don't care for one of his songs, I just really don't care for it. I liked this more than Bad. The softer songs are generally better than on Bad, even if I'd rather leave them than take them. The song with McCartney's a little too cute for me though. The three song run of Thriller, Beat It, and Billie Jean is legendary though, and some other songs are solid (PYT, The Lady In My Life). The first couple tracks I did feel were a tad long though. Human Nature is probably my least favorite track. A very low 4. Legendary highs, but most of the rest of the album is just solid.

Oh, I was never a Jackson fan. His voice always annoyed me. The only song I can stand is "Thriller," and really only the video, and I have to admit that's absolutely great. "Beat It" isn't bad either. "Billie Jean" is terrible, and the rest, I don't like him. 2 or 3 stars, so I'd rather give it 2. I'm leaving out anything about Michael Jackson himself in this review, otherwise I wouldn't rate him at all. But that would probably mean not rating half the artists and bands, because unfortunately, there are a lot of less-than-stellar personalities.

The Girl Is Mine is fairly terrible - in general the slower songs on here are the weakest. But how can you give an album with Billie Jean, Beat It and Thriller less than five stars?

Coming into this review, it's going to be hard not to give this a 5 because this was truly a generational pop album. It still is (and probably will remain) the best-selling album of all time. I didn't realize that 7 of the 9 songs became singles, but that feels insane! The 3-song stretch of Thriller, Beat It, and Billie Jean might be the greatest of all time. They'd be #1 singles on just about any other pop album in their own right. Feels like having the LeBron Miami Heat on the song roster. All the upbeat songs here are truly great and fun to groove to. Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, and PYT all are hits. For me, the mixing of the slower R&B songs make me question if this is really a 5 in my book. I liked Baby Be Mine, but didn't like The Girl is Mine very much (also, redundant much?). Also didn't care for Human Nature sandwiched between the good stuff. Just a snoozer of a song and one I'd easily skip on re-listens. The Lady In My Life was a good song to end the album on. This lands pretty squarely at like 4.5 stars for me, but I will bump it up to 5 status for all the positives I laid out above. This album wouldn't be in my personal top-10 albums of all time, but I understand why it is for most people (even though MJ was a pedo at the end of the day).

The big man at his height. Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' is a fantastic kickoff track -- love the funk adjacent pop and high energy to get things going out of the gate. The peaks are really high on here... Thriller > Beat It > Billie Jean is an amazing sequence. Quick downturn into Human Nature (not my favorite here), before P.Y.T kicks things off again with a fun completely 80s sounding jam. The Lady in My Life is a fine soulful outro; can't go too wrong with slapped bass and quality vocals. This is a jam deserving of all the multi-platinum status. High 4 / 5 for personal enjoyment.

Most recognizable album cover in history? Probably third to Abbey Road and Dark Side of the Moon, but it has to be up there. Funky groovy hits, exactly what I expected. Don't love that most pop albums always feel the need to have ballads on them. I really just want the catchy tunes to be honest. Pretty Young Thang is one that I have never really heard (I'm sure it's been played somewhere I was listening in my life) but it was a great "deeper" cut if you can call it that. This album was very similar to Bad which we just had a week or so ago. Lots of hits which I already knew and they all went hard. Beat it is an incredible song and PYT was one that I have heard before, but I have never given it the respect it deserves I was absolute jamming to it. Not the biggest fan of the slow songs but the high energy songs bring so much heat

This album is chock full of jams which are all legendary songs. The more R&B focused songs kinda blow (Baby Be Mine, The Girl is Mine (sorry Paul), Human Nature, Thriller (the song) is honestly one of my favorite songs of all time. I still watch the music video every once in awhile. Thriller -> Beat It -> Billie Jean is a legendary 3 song run holy hell. Sucks Michael Jackson turned out so damn weird. Solid 4.

Knew I had to listen to this album some day. Glad this list finally gave me a reason to get off my fat ass and listen to this thing as I certainly wasn't going to do it on my own. I know all of the big hits, unsurprisingly. Yet, outside of the Thriller music video I've never actually sat down and given these songs a proper listen. In some respects I'm going into this album blind. It's good. The songwriting is top notch on the big hits with tons of hooks and quirks in the instrumentation that make it impossible for me not to bob along to the music. I'm more mixed on the non-headliners like "Human Nature" and "The Lady in My Life", though these are ultimately minor quibbles when the leading acts are of a consistently high quality. I had no idea that Paul McCartney was on this album, which is funny. It's amusing to imagine someone 16 years older than MJ going after his love interest. Michael Jackson is a talented vocalist, though his appeal varies with each track. There are moments where his voice is the core appeal of the song like on "Billie Jean" and there are others where I am indifferent to his performances, like on "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'". He's ultimately suave enough to get by without a hitch, as I don't think there are any bad songs on this album. I'm interested in seeing why this album is in the book. "Most commercially successful album of all time" is a good enough qualifier, though I'm still curious. Apparently the editor (John Lewis) thinks this album is worse than "Off the Wall", which is surprising. Can't comment on the merit of that opinion. The title track is "ridiculously camp" and "drains the life out of the record at the end of side one". Damn, Johnny hates this thing. This is the only entry I've read that has expressed any negativity towards the included album. Maybe he's trying to temper expectations with all that has been said about this album, though he's not doing a good job. He constantly refers to MJ as "Jacko", which I don't think is a common shorthand. "Wanna Be Starting Something" plagiarised "Soul Makossa" by Manu Dibango. "Beat It" and "Human Nature" are good. "Billie Jean" is good. "Meticulously crafted" and without "a single note out of place". He came back in the second half, but this was a really shitty write-up, not gonna lie. I'd estimate that there are around 200 albums on the list that deserve a proper, irreverent write-up and this was one of them. What were they thinking?????? What a shitload of fuck....

I really don't think there's anything I can say about this album that hasn't already been said. He's classic, iconic and a genuine, literal superstar for a reason. This album, itself, is the same. It's an absolute beast musically. I will admit, I haven't really listened to that much MJ. I did briefly dip into his best hits as a teenager, which even then was still after his death. But I have never listened to a full album of his from front to back. So, based on my sample size of one, I feel like this is his most iconic. It has some of the biggest songs, and most of the rest were not unfamiliar to me either. Melodies and lyrics I was familiar with without realising it, owing the pervasiveness and sheer scale of his music. Although, I certainly wasn't familiar with the "you're a vegetable" proclamation of Wanna Be Startin' Something, that one caught me off-guard and... may need some explaining. I was actually really intrigued by this, so I went and looked up the lyrics; the closing unquestionably recognisable refrain (you know the one) has a translation/etymology link to... peeling vegetables! So that's... interesting! There's a couple forgettable tracks like Baby Be Mine and The Lady in My Life, but that doesn't detract from how incredibly loud, funky and satisfying this album is to listen to. Incredible production. Favourite Track: Thriller (of course), followed closely by Human Nature

I always assumed Thriller was one of the best albums of the decade because I was familiar with the singles. Taking time to listen to it entirely, it is a bit weird. There are some of the best pop songs of the 80s, but mixed in between them are terrible, almost unlistenable songs.

It's time for the popular question: should we separate the art from the artist? The artist of discussion here has a thriller alright, right on his Neverland Ranch(and sadly, he did beat it). However, the artist is also dead, so perhaps it's not worth discussing anymore. There isn't much else to say: It's a great album with four of his biggest hits, but I don't see how this entire album led to it being the best selling album of all time. Favorite Track: "Thriller".

Thriller, Beat It, and Billie Jean for sure carry this whole album. I don't care much for the other songs but in terms of pop music, there are few songs that are as iconic as those 3, and for good reason. They're amazing pop songs will really good production. The rest of the album doesn't really do it for me though.

This was fun! It feels so much like the 80s that my first hunch is that it doesn’t age well, but then I realize so much popular music right now is directly taken from this record. The most recent Bon Iver album sounds like this in songs, the Goose album has these elements. It’s really cool and unique.

Almost every song is like "ah yeah, this is a classic for a reason". The run from The Girl is Mine (which i might be alone in loving-it's so fun) -> Thriller (banger) -> Beat It (haven't heard it in a while; forgot how genuinely good it is) -> Billie Jean (unreal bassline) is all-timer. Extremely listenable all the way through. 4.5/5

It's undeniably catchy. There's some gems in here that are the pinnacle of pop at the time. I don't know if it's a masterpiece but it makes total sense to be on the list and it's fun to listen to.

He is an interesting vocalist that makes interesting choices with his instrument. As always a lot of the music here sounds like bad karaoke backing music. The Girl is Mine with Paul McCartney is insanity inducing. Might be the worst song ever made. I'll give this a 3, but be aware all 3 of the stars belong to Vincent Price.

Not many records that promised and delivered as much as this one did. Jackson solidified his name with this collection of ear worms. Musically, it is infectious and just on the premise of the melodies and beats, should prevent any listener from keeping their foot still.

I’m no big MJ fan, buuut there is no argument in my mind that this is superlative work even if it isn’t what I’d listen to on the daily, or even monthly…yearly.

Separating the art from the artist, this is an incredible album. It flows perfectly, the flexes of Paul McCartney and Eddie Van Halen truly capture the era and the fact that MJ had endless powers. “Human Nature” is one of my absolute favorite MJ songs, too. Could listen to it on loop.

One minute it's some super obscure album that has no legacy or even a cult following, the next it's the greatest pop album of all time. 5 stars for Thriller, an essential 20th century masterpiece any music lover must hear before they die. It is absolutely essential to understanding all pop music that has followed, Michael Jackson, and the '80s as a decade of American pop culture (and the '80s revival of the 2010s). 1 star for this list. After we finish this project, give me a half hour, a cup of coffee and a red pen and I bet I can get the list down to 500.

My parents have Thriller on vinyl—12/10. Michael’s playing with a tiger cub in the centerfold and there are elaborate caricatures in the liner notes, including one of Paul McCartney and Mike pulling the high-heeled subject of “The Girl Is Mine” apart in their fervor. Undoubtedly one of the 101 or even 51 albums to listen to before you die. Mama say, Mama saw!

Literally no fillers. So many hits and even lesser known songs are just so good. Love the Paul and MJ collab on this album also.

I bought this album pretty much when it came out. It’s a masterpiece. Billy Jean and Beat It were played endlessly on MTV and the album sold a few billion copies. It’s one of the few 70’s albums you can still pick up at Goodwill.

A classic. I wish I could go back and listen to this one for the first time again. Beat It, Thriller, Human Nature, and Billie Jean are all time great tracks even if the first two are so overplayed it's hard to keep the same hype about them. PYT and Wanna Be Startin' are also great. I know That Girl is Mine gets the most hate but I honestly kind of like it. It's Lady on My Life and Baby Be Mine that really bog me down honestly. Easily a top 100 album of all time, even with a few warts.

It's a treat to listen to this back to front, which I hadn't before. It's stacked with all-time bangers. A cohesive, blockbuster pop statement. Exploding with charisma. The production is razor-sharp too; "Billie Jean" in particular is just perfect. (I can't get into it about Michael Jackson every time one of his albums comes up, so I won't. Death of the author and all that.) I do have to say, did not enjoy the cutesy dialogue at the end of "The Girl is Mine".

Quite literally the album that got me into music at the age of 10. I can’t be objective about it, but if not for “the girl is mine” it’d be a 10/10 for me. It’s still a solid 9/10. Will there be anyone like MJ again? Fave: Billie Jean is probably the best pop track in the history of music but IDK, I have a soft spot for the mamasemamasamamacoosas of wanna be startin’ something.

THE imperial pop album to end all others ofc, which is making me realize i need to do some more conscious thinking ab the whole concept, it scratches my historical brain to think about how artists successfully Meet The Moment (or even more interestingly, *create* the moment). my articulation for Bad where i proposed the appeal of MJ's music lies in the mix of Perfectionist Order and carefully deployed (or at even Simulated) looseness rings even more vividly here, and its hard to imagine that any of his other records or maybe even any other records Period nail it in quite the same way. for how terrifyingly Exact everything is, it rly does never feel cold or stiff, i kinda dont even know how he did it ghjsdghjsd. most obvious culprit tho is his expressiveness as a singer...i thought rly intently this time about how many MJ hooks are often iconic more for how he delivers them than the melodic content on its own, u cant mention them casually without imitating his inflections. i Think im pro-the girl is mine. i rly rly rly like that the title track on the biggest album ever and one of the most famous songs in history details something as mundane as taking ur date to a horror movie as an excuse 2 physically comfort them

As one of the, if not THE best selling album of all time, I found it a little lackluster. Sure it has some huge huge hits on it, and they're great if course. A few of the fillers just didn't hit as hard as I'd have liked.

I mean it’s a total classic, isn’t it! (Again fully separating art from artist.) Just full of bangers, with Wanna Be Startin Something or PYT perhaps my favourite. (4.5 stars)

The obvious stuff. The title track, Billie Jean and Beat It are all bangers. For the most part, this album is a classic but the duet with McCartney and the ballads fall flat. Highly influential. It's huge. Solid but Purple Rain is better.

Trying yet again to understand why people love Michael Jackson's music so much and I will say that I like the singles off of this one and the last two tracks but I really don't get why this is considered by some to be one of the best albums ever. I really didn’t need to listen to this, but it’s been so many years since I heard the album in its entirety I thought it be a good idea to do so. Although I don’t love this album, it’s pretty strong…after all, it sold a gazillion copies. I even bought a copy of it on vinyl back in the day, because I thought it may be a collectible someday. I really haven’t listened to it much since it was current. Like a lot of folks, I think the girl is mine is a horrible song with some inane lyrics. I also don’t care for the sound of electronic percussion throughout the album. But, I do recognize the importance of this album and its quality, even though it doesn’t completely cater to my tastes. I can’t see giving it less than four stars.

For the best selling album ever, this is a disappointment. Not a terrible album by any means. Beat It and Billie Jean are great songs that totally stand the test of time. Wanna Be Starting Something is also pretty good though I don’t love the drums (frankly the drum machine on the whole album aren’t my favourite.) But can Thriller really be a classic pop song when it has been reduced to a Halloween novelty? The (Doggone) Girl is Mine has to be the worst song either Jackson orPaul McCartney ever recorded. And then the rest of the album is fairly charmless adult contemporary filler. Four stars on the strength of Beat It and Billie Jean.

As it's been the trend 3 albums now, Michael Jackson albums are: very good and very enjoyable but there is that ever present filler in the deep cuts of the album between all the other great stuff that I'm already really familiar and really in love with (Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, c'mon). It's like, the singles are unbeatable, some songs are great, but then you have things like The Girl Is Mine or The Lady in My Life which I'm not crazy about on first listen and just kinda make the flow of the album just slow down to a crawl. Still, it's a Michael Jackson album, how can I not like it?

Bangers but also mj so..

Great grooves, brass, backing vocals, bass, and drums and of course vocals on the tracks make them all enjoyable to listen to, everything is very cohesive. Didn't realize that Rihanna sampled "Wanna be starting something". "Baby be mine" is also nice - really like the runs in that one. Especially enjoyed: "Human Nature, Thriller, Billie Jean," makes sense why it's a classic 5/5.

Pop. Have this on vinyl. Fantastic album

Quintessential album of 80s dance pop. It has most of the well known Michael Jackson songs on it. Iconic when in person, fun at parties. I don't think it works as an album for listening through. None of the songs are particularly interesting to focus on, but when doing other things, it can be fun to have on.

Nostalgia-packed for me, and still a fantastic pop album 40+ years later.

Every song is worth playing. I’ve never really gotten into MJ but I’ve heard at least all the songs released as single at some point. For only 9 songs, this album feels like it has more to it. I get why it’s held in such high esteem.
