Classic 4.5

Billie Jean may not be my lover but this album is the one

I have nothing but respect for the best-selling album of all time. But, somehow, his music never resonated with me that much. Don’t own any copies of his records and probably never will but you might catch me sing along a track or two. [0146/1001]

pretty good, not my type of music, but I really dig the groove and Michael Jacksons voice. Significant 39/124 Liked 18/124 Added 4/124 YYN

Thriller Wanna be Starting Somethin’, Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean (what a three track run), PYT all stone cold, copper bottomed, all time, unbelievable classics. Human Nature is the best of rest but the other songs don’t really meet that same level. I always want to skip Baby Be Mine and The Girl is Mine to get to Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean. The Lady in my Life is pretty forgettable too I think. Those 5 truly exceptional songs make it hard to rate for me. They surely make it worthy of a 5 star album, but their superiority to the other songs, for me, makes the whole album lose a sense of cohesion and it becomes a bit of a frustrating listen. In comparison Off the Wall doesn’t not reach the highs of Thriller but is more of an overall enjoyable listen. It might be slightly contradictory and confused logic as there are plenty of albums that I love that have are inconsistent but I would give a 5 to, but this I’m not sure about. Maybe I’m holding it to too high a standard, or overthinking it, but it’s emblematic of his his whole catalogue, songs and moments of the highest quality, far beyond what most people can dream of, but combined with a lot of frustration. Also the ‘I don’t belieeeve you’ bit on the Girl is Mine is so excruciating, it taints the whole thing. If this was only 6 tracks, WBSS, Thriller, BI, BJ, PYT and HN it would a 5 for sure, but as it is ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

i'm not afraid to say that his career as a whole is overrated, but it's impossible to deny how remarkable this is

Some fantastic songs - Wanna Be Starting Something, Thriller, Beat It, Billy Jean, PYT... But then the sappy duet with Paul Mccartney on The Girl is Mine.... and other generic 80's soul pop that is average. The great far outweighs the not so good - it's one thats in the CD collection.

Classique intemporel.

This album has some amazing bangers: Wanna Be Starting Something Thriller Billie Jean Human Nature Solid 80s RnB: Baby Be Mine lady in My Life Never Liked: Beat It Crazy funky, but hard to listen to today. Who is he singing this one to? P.Y.T.

- The middle of this album, i.e. Thriller, Beat It, and then Billie Jean, is possibly the best back-to-back tracks ever released. - The rest does not quite live up to that.

What an incredible album. The sheer talent of this man is unparalleled. Gone are the days where you can cordially resolve a love triangle through singing a song back and forth to the person who is in love with your girl. The Girl Is Mine with Paul McCartney is lyrically cheesy but the music in it is great. I'm sure that's Sir Paul on bass. In fact every song on this record, the music is 5/5. The big songs such as Thriller, Billie Jean, and Beat It are giants on and off of this album but the lesser known ones stand their ground as well. I've revisited this record a handful of times. Not my favourite MJ album but it's definitely one of the best records ever made. There are some things I dislike about this record - it kind of feel disjointed. The song Thriller, kind of feels out of place in contrast to the other songs. But overall the record was great.

Legendary album. Full of bangers. Too bad the guy turned into a weirdo.

loved it, nice album for me and my babe! 4 stars

A masterpiece by Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones.

As expected, some great catchy songs from MJ

Bangers and saccharine

Borderline 5 - definite 9/10 but giving it a 4 just because of MJ's questionable behaviour

As someone who didn’t grow up listening to Michael Jackson through their parents like many of my millennial peers did (my boomer parents generally shunned contemporary pop music in favor of older stuff from their childhoods in the 60’s and 70’s), I had never heard this album front to back before. Of course I’d heard most of it. In fact I think the only tracks I hadn’t heard before were “Baby Be Mine” and “The Lady in My Life.” I think I can be forgiven for that. But it’s for that reason, that I’ve heard most of it before, that it’s hard for me to be blown away by this album. The hits are HITS, but I know them. This album is a milestone, yes. Of course. To pack this much quality into one album is an absolute feat and creativity and captures all those involved at their peek (namely Jackson and Quincy Jones). I guess what I’m saying is I take this album for granted a little. And maybe that’s the best praise I could give it. Its songs have become so culturally ubiquitous that when I hear them all together for the first time, I just kind of look at it and go “yeah, that’s Thriller alright.” All of that said, you can’t deny the quality here, or the impact. But I can and will deny “The Girl is Mine.” McCartney is capable of way better than that. It’s not great.

I'm no big fan of pop or MJ, and this is in no way a perfect album (there's some pretty banal filler like Baby Be Mine and Human Nature, and apart from one great run of tracks in the middle it doesn't really cohere). But when it's great, it's truly great. Billie Jean/Beat It etc. Loads of soul in the voice and music, which gives the pop its kick and edge. In some ways hard to argue that it's not 5 stars, but here we are.

poppy goodness

Never listened to it. The man had some hits

The songs are so omnipresent that it's hard to give unbiased review. That said, yes this album really did drag us from the dregs of the tail end of the Disco era, and heralded the future shape of Pop music; the effects still felt decades later. A few of the biggest hits on here really are so good that they are still astounding almost half a century later, as does the general production and performances throughout on this album. I found myself actually enjoying the lesser-played songs on here this time around, primarily "Baby Be Mine". Despite that, not every song is as fantastic as you'd expect from the greatest selling album of all time. I still find "The Girl Is Mine is" and "The Lady in My Life" to be really low points I always skip. Overall, a great album that I don't find to be as perfect as it's seen to be, but still an incredible landmark moment in music itself.

Loved it! Especially Man in the Mirror. Never listened to the whole album before, but Michael Jackson is a classic, right?!

good album, all songs very catchy and i feel the need to head-bop. PAUL MCCARTNEY COLLAB???? 😍😍😍😍😍 pretty great 8/10

Being a teenager in the 80's of course this album is the soundtrack of the decade for me. Thriller (the video) was HUGE because of how much it cost to make, that the director John Landis and the amount of effort and production that went into the making of Thriller. This was MJ swan song before the gradual fall from grace occurred. The music and lyrics can be a complete representation of the 1980's and the genre of the era. 9 tracks on this album and only ONE did not chart. I wish I could say that this album is a favorite of mine but it's not. I do find myself begin to dance as I listen to the album (PYT in particular) but that is a hold over from the HS dances on my teen years. MJ was an ubiquitous presence in the music industry for almost his entire life which to me made his music dull and repetitive.

A classic. It seems like every song on the album was a hit.

I mean it was always gonna be overrated, but it's pretty good. PYT and Billie Jean are the highlights, first song was good too. I think the title track is not great but it's not horrible

Some classic songs, will have to revisit for the album tracks

Not my favorite but it does have a few songs on it that I do love.

Pretty great through and through, clear why it's the best seller of all time. A little dated sounding on some of the tracks, but that also kick in the nostalgia hard. Should be a 4.75 but no fractions on here

ну он где-то в днк прописан уже, объективность невозможна

Uh so starting the album with a 6 minute highly repetitive song is a... bold move. The Paul McCartney duet was odd. The lows with this album do go low, but my God do the hits bang. This is pretty much the opposite of a timeless album. This album only could have been made in 1982 and it is such a time capsule. Fantastic album with a fantastic close. Favorite song: PYT

I loved this album when it first came out. I remember being allowed to stay up and watch the thriller video - it was broadcast late as it was deemed too scary for under 16s! I have moved on a little since then in my musical journey but this album still “bangs”. The Quincy Jones production adds a certain je ne sais quoi. It’s almost a Greatest Hits album. Rose tinted specs perhaps? I don’t care.

Not my kind of music, but can't argue with Thriller's greatness obviously.

Abuse works out for the best sometimes

Easy to enjoy listening to him when he was at this point in his career.

Very accomplished album, some of MJ's best songs (Thriller, Beat It, Wanna Be starting somethin). hard to dislike even if like me you aren't a big fan

A very important album. Lots of excellent numbers. But I have a difficult time admiring a child molester.

Three tracks that would mean five stars all by themselves. One off for The Girl Is Mine.

great!

it should be a 5 but i cannot give it a 5 for multiple reasons not limited to.... paul's contribution.... anyway. you could delete 3 tracks from this and then i think it would be a 5.

Not the best album of 1983…but a damn fine one. We probably need to talk about PYT though……

So many classics in this record. Overall, its great. Not much to say, its thriller. Biggest album of all time.

Not my favorite singer, but you can’t deny this is filled from front to back with some of the biggest hits of all time

With the other singles like Beat It, Thriller, etc. being so overplayed, Human Nature has kind of been forgotten lately. It's a good one. Also, is that an uncredited cameo by Alvin at the end of P.Y.T.?

Is good. But made by a pedophile so, -1 star

Editors are right that Off the Wall holds up better. The title track is especially dodgy-sound now, when it was just annoyingly gimmicky back in the day. "Billie Jean" and "Human Nature" and "Beat It" are the best cuts, the first a Platonic ideal of hook construction and well-placed filligree, the last a borderline classic which may prove itself to be timeless in the end. "Startin' Somethin'" and "PYT" seem like the same song, both/each fun and bouncy and infectious. "Lady in My Life" is beyond cheesy (and grows ever less convincing with every listen down the years.) And – oy – is that duet with Macca cringey. It does all feel pretty synthetic and manufactured and over-engineered, no surprise given its shine and polish, and its not inconsiderable merits. A 4 bestowed only reluctantly.

- Wanna Be Startin' Something 8/10 - Baby Be Mine 8/10 - The Girl Is Mine 6/10 - Thriller 8/10 - Beat It 10/10 - Billie Jean 10/10 - Human Nature 7/10 - P.Y.T (Pretty Young Thing) 6/10 - The Lady in My Life 8/10 Favourites: Beat It, Billie Jean, Wanna Be Startin' Something Lease Favourites: P.Y.T., The Girl Is Mine Score: 8.1/10

De 9 canciones, 6 son perfectas, 2 están bien, y 1 que me da igual.

A mixed bag really. Has some of his best work on there, but also some of the songs were really just mediocre! But still worth the listening for the half that are absolute bangers

Without a doubt, one of the greatest of all time

Pop bangers only, P.Y.T. is feels underrated but is great. Slightly disappointment by the song with McCartney.

Weird mix of iconic and filler.

FUCKING HELL every song on this is a banger Like thriller immediately followed by beat it... he wasn't messing around! BILLIE JEAN IS RIGHT AFTER THOSE TWO OH YOU'RE JOKING Human nature - I'm hearing those fuckass videogame soundfonts again. This time it was defo those fuckass synths from mario 64.

So hard to separate the art from the artist. Automatic 1 point reduction for an all time classic album.

Wasn't "thrilled" for this to crop up, but pleasantly surprised. There were quite a few pop ballads but the album was surprisingly brief so didn't overstay it's welcome. The big hits are there, Billie Jean is definitely a bop, but lots of filler. Four stars, which is better than expected.

Top. Disco mais vendido da história!

Great album, confirmed banger.

So I always go into each of these albums with a fresh unbiased mindset. Always. Even my favorite albums. Doing that, and if I knew nothing about this album, the beats and instrumentation is catchy as fucking hell. But I don't even think these hits are that big of hits compared so many other tracks on here. Maybe I just don't like R&B. No clue. Maybe I like Bad more??? I just don't think I can give it a 5. I dont even like the song Thriller that much.

We all know Thriller is a great Album, and MJ is at his peak here, his voice is absolutely the best thing about it. Frankly the worst thing about the album is the instrumentation, a lot of it has aged poorly, cheesy 80s synths abound. Other than The Girl is Mine (hang your head in shame, Sir Paul) all the songs are classics, however pop is not my preferred genre, so it doesn't get a 5.

Yeah he was a bit odd....but lots a great songs, amazing production. Classic I guess.

3 all time great pop hits, 1 all time abysmal collabo. The production on this album is so good, so many different parts all balanced just right and sounding crisp and clean and perfectly polished. Funky synth tones, tight compressed guitars and a crazy EVH solo, bright horns, energetic bass and an incredibly charismatic vocal performance. Its like the motown sound dragged voguing and screaming through the disco era into a world of soft-focus 80s sheen. Sometimes it's sickening how dripping in cheese it is, sometimes its so gloriously corny you have to embrace it. Lots of references to young things and who owns what babies - yikes!

Solid body of work. Great rhythms thoughtout

Mikey J! Hadn't listened to the album itself in years. Of course the hits are all timers, but the rest of the music? Honestly just filler. Good filler, but it's 3 of the greatest pop hits of all time and a middling ready of it. Still 4.5

Nearly every song is a hit!

Nothing with "The Girl Is Mine" on it deserves 5 stars.

Contains some monster pop hits of the decade, but only half the album holds up for me. The other half is comprised of slow - even a little sappy - R&B styled songs that just aren't my speed.

Well, isn’t this just wall to wall great pop songs… After listening it was my obvious to me why he got the name King of Pop. It sort of feels wrong to give this anything less than a 5… but I will

An obvious classic.

Great album. Tightly produced, love the mix of motown funk rock and pop. Great eneregy in Dirty Diana

I didn’t listen to this now, but I remember listening to it a lot when I was probably ten or so and it was great.

At first was feeling meh until I realized how fucking legendarily stacked the middle of the album was.

"Thriller" by Michael Jackson is an iconic pop album that stands as one of the greatest of all time. Released in 1982, it's a spectacular showcase of Jackson's talent and innovation. The album is a sonic journey, boasting hits like "Billie Jean," "Thriller," and "Beat It," which remain dancefloor classics. Jackson's vocals are electrifying, and the production by Quincy Jones is a masterclass in pop craftsmanship. While the album's success is immense, its timeless quality speaks to the enduring appeal of its artistry. "Thriller" is a pop culture milestone and rightly earns a perfect 4/5 rating.

i mean its like entirely #1 hits

Plus one bad boy bonus. All things considered, I find portions of the album to be rather exceptional. Excellent production, super bouncy, loads of treble, and so on. I really enjoy the drums. The dynamism of the best tracks does, however, make the lesser tracks on the boring side (Human Nature, The Lady in my Life, Baby Be Mine). Deliberating over my favourite songs, I can't pick between the absolute stomping middle of Thriller, Beat It, and Billie Jean. The impact of these songs in particular influenced the genre no end. One could go on about his personal life, and let it affect your perception of this album, but taken as a piece of music, I find it grand. I think, even with the bad boy bonus, 4 is a very fair score.

I always enjoy MJ's music and this album was no exception. There are a few slow more boring tracks that bog down the album a bit but overall this is has a great Pop/Disco sound. Highlights: Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' Thriller Beat It Billie Jean P.Y.T.

Holy shit, hit na hit. Vormt niet een coherent geheel

Great album

A five star for me means it gets heavy play in my rotation. Such good music but O wouldnt play this album often

What could anyone say about this record that has not already been said. It is the epitome of the Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones partnership. Every detail was dialed in and scrutinized to pop perfection. It is my opinion that this album also represents the start of an expectation of perfection that still exists to this day. I for one like the pops and hisses or flaws that can show up and make a record or song feel more tangible and human but you can not argue with perfection right?

He's called the King of Pop for a reason

POP POP POP Throbby synth beats The Girl is Mine does not sound like the MJ that fame has impressed on us. BEAT IT Beat It beat it... wait that's a pretty banging solo BILLIE JEAN has a really smooth bass line Human Nature's synth tag is a brain worm and good sample opportunity. Otherwise really laidback but there is a lot of sonic interest

Very fun listen

Tried to view this one without taking into account the controversial nature of Michael Jackson. It's easy to tell why it's the best selling album ever, almost every song is a hit. The Van Halen guitar solo is on of the most iconic in music and obviously Thriller itself is a cultural phenomenon. However, I've knocked 1 point off for Paul McCartney's confusing appearance, and a weak finish as I didn't really enjoy the last 2 songs all that much.

The run of Thriller - Best It - Billie Jean might be the best of any pop album

really good

Classic. Some great track from a great artist.

classic

Good bops. Don’t know how often I’d put it on for an active listen

Cultural phenomenon, best selling album of all time, pop sensation, what more needs be said. The album is held back by songs like, the girl is mine but overall still holds up as a solid 8.5/10

The opening and closing songs were a bit sleeper, but I did not realize that this album is basically a collection of Michael Jackson’s best music. What a great album.

Great album. Perfect song to start the album. Not all songs can be A+, and the ballad with Paul McCartney was not for me.

Esté ya me lo escuché, esta bueno, esta épico que la primera canción sea tan larga y en general tiene puro temon

Ripper of an album. Loved the lesser known tracks even more than the songs I was very familiar with (which there weren't many of)!

9/10. So many hits one after the other I just can't give it a 10 and I don't know why

Bro I’m not gonna even act like I haven’t heard this before. Yes Michael Jackson is good no shit

The soundtrack of the 80’s.

Sometimes it’s some of the best pop music ever produced. But it has one or two skips that keep it from truly being incredible.

Some absolute classics on here. But that song with Paul gives me the ick. The talking section...ugh!!

It's good. 4/5

Gets one star less just because of the girl is mine. Who decided that that wet fart of a song should be the lead single

I liked it

Thrillllaaaaa

Classic. Many good songs but it wasn’t cohesive.

...and while I say again that Michael Jackson is more of a singles artist I think that this album has really a lot of gems and feels better in it its consistency than Bad. The title track and 'Beat It' are obviously great but already the opener goes in full.

Excellent vocals and music; not to my personal taste, but Jackson was incredibly talented. I had never heard Human Nature, PYT but I enjoyed them.

Michael Jackson is in the prime of his life on this album. Creating fantastic, catchy tunes, collaborating with the best in the business. Really just making whatever songs he wants and doing it very well. Unfortunately, not every song he creates goes together on one album. This is a nitpick, but Michael is a pedo and I will only do such a petty nitpick for him. This is an album of all good songs, but the songs don’t make for a cohesive album. That’s really the only complaint. I hate to say it, but everything else is spectacular. 4/5

Discazo.

Funky synths. Basically the best of Michael Jackson, but for some reason it just doesn’t fully excite me. Should probably be a 5 but firing off a 4.

The "2nd side" of this album is one of the best ever.

It would be a five star except there are a couple of weak songs. The ballads I don't care for.

Baby Be Mine is an underrated gem. The album is just short of perfection.

Likes: the opener is a jam and an easy favorite for me (the whole thing is just asking to be stimmed), Baby Be Mine is totally underrated (what a solid groove), Thriller is a bold move and a total riot, Beat It has always felt weirdly Westside Story to me (in a good way) there's just a level of camp and theatrics to it, Billie Jean's defensive ambiguity has always been cool, and Human Nature gets stuck in my head like crazy Dislikes: The McCartney collab is a total dud and in spite of how catchy P.Y.T. is, I find the lyrics and general concept mildly annoying and even a little creepy? The last couple tracks honestly don't do much for me. Favorite tracks: Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', Baby Be Mine, Thriller Favorite lyrics: "you're a vegetable"(lol), "girl, I can thrill you more than any ghoul would ever dare try",

A solid proportion of this album is undeniable excellently crafted pop. There are some let downs, which combined with Mr Jackson’s personal transgressions, make me unwilling to give this a 5 Best tracks: Billie Jean, Thriller, Beat It, Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ (though the Glee version is superior) Worst: The Lady In My Life

When I was a kid this was a 5! Now, let's see...do you seperate the art from the artist on this? Tough call, music wise this is untouchable, everything else surrounding the person gets muddy

The hits(Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean) are unsurprisingly great, but there’s just too much mediocre filler (Baby be Mine and everything after Billie Jean) to give this 5 stars.

It's a good album, and consistently good too. Thriller is a massive, massive tune, going straight into Beat It (wowzers!) then THAT goes straight into Billie Jean (hooo lordy!). What a 3-track run. Overall it's a solid 4 stars.

Classic, but an imperfect pearl for me 4,5/5

not much to be said about this one. it’s thriller, the best selling album of all time with some of the most recognizable tracks in music. that being said, there were some songs that i wasn’t the biggest fan of, so i cant give it a perfect rating.

Immaculately crafted in every conceivable way, yet I never have felt particularly compelled to listen to it. Blame it on the cheesy camp-off or the poor sequencing, something is stopping me from loving it the way I should.

Great album.

Hitsen är fantastiska. I övrigt är det inte lika bra. Blir ändå en fyra.

This is far from my favorite album but I recognize the greatness. With more hits on one album than most bands can dream of in a lifelong career it's an insane achievement. The hits are good. The songs which were not hits were surprisingly bad and felt more like filler to this Thriller album. It's a great album but I'm just not a great fan.

While Michael Jackson isn't always my thing, the middle of this album plays like a "best hits" playlist

If you're only going to listen to 1 Michael Jackson album this would have to be my recommendation. So many good songs on this 9 track album.

This could be reamed Michael Jackson’s Greatest Hits. So many hits!

Funky, cute, good to dance to, cool layered melodies and vocals. The album has some filler, though, and five minutes is a bit long for a pop song.

He’s a pedophile. If I’m not considering that, thriller and beat it are amazing. I know the bass line in Billie Jean is supposed to be amazing but that song has never done it for me. I think this loses a point for me because besides Beat It and Thriller, the other songs are boring and longer than they need to be. 1 if we are considering the artist. 4: if we are notZ

i was expecting more duds but the only bad song on here is the girl is mine

4.5/5. If we’re separating the artist from their art, this record was groundbreaking for its time. Talk about capturing the 80s zeitgeist. Hard not to give it a high score when you hear songs like Beat It and Billie Jean.

Assessing the success of MJ’s aim to make an album of ‘all killer’: Billie Jean is a stone cold classic, no arguments here. I think the second best track might be Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’, which is pretty great too (‘You’re a vegetable!’) Beat It is good, if a little cheesy. Same with Thriller (but slightly less good & slightly more cheesy). Both are obviously iconic. Human Nature is decent as sentimental ballads go, and if I’m being generous P.Y.T. can join the ‘killer’ club too. That still leaves a third of the album that is ok, I guess, but certainly not killer. Nevertheless, a decent ratio: 4 stars. Maybe even 4.5.

Practically anybody will be ready to launch into the lurching zombie dance when this record's title track erupts on the radio. It is so well-known, iconic, fun, funky, corny and dare I say wholesome. Not to wander into a rockumentary alleyway, but also recall that Michael Jackson and MTV set each other to go thermonuclear with the dazzling videos. Also recall that this gave great material for Weird Al to parody - it's biting irony how in Weird Al's biopic he ridiculed MJ for begging to emulate "Eat it". Now that I've read up a little on this album's history, it seems like MJ wanted some payback for "Off The Wall" being disregarded. He wanted to really blow the industry, so mission accomplished by being certified platinum time a zlllion.

seminal album by the king of pop (mid you The Wall was as good)

Classic pop album. Tons of hits.

Bops bops and more bops

The Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean streak is just unbeatable in terms of pop songs. It's all getting kind of old, but it's still a great album.

Pop classic.

I wouldn't listen to this everyday, but it's an undeniable and powerful classic in terms of pop music.

Top 3 Songs: 1 - Beat It (5) 2 - Billie Jean (6) 3 - Thriller (4)

Considering it still is the best-selling album of all time it is surprisingly sappy. And I expected there'd be another catchy tune beyond the ones I've already heard a billion times - there is not.

funky and cool

Not a Michaelhead by any stretch of the word, but with hits like Thriller, Billie Jean, and Beat It, I’m not gonna argue that this album does have some pretty serious slap

Hit after hit. Baselines so groovy I ignored the little squeaks and oohs and aahs that once bothered me enough to think I didn’t like MJs music 4/5

Slapping baseline followed by slapping baseline. I’m not the biggest MJ fan, but I can totally understand why this is a classic. It had me groovin

This was my second time listening to this entire album. I'm obviously aware of the famous tracks and have heard them a million times. That said, I don't love this album. I love the hits but I don't love the other songs.

Michael asside, Quincy Jones' work on this album is great. I've capped it at 4 because of how cheesy The Girl is Mine is. It's weird listening to an album like this now, you're so familiar with each track it's hard to hear it as an album. I guess that's pop for you.

Pretty solid album really

Damn, I still really like most of this album. The duet with McCartney always seemed weird to me, but the rest of the record is great. I love how Thriller is basically a pop song with death metal lyrics, and I love the mix of live horn sections and synth horns; this album has a lot of potential cheese, but the production is so tight that it all works.

Everyone in the world knows like 2/3 of these songs by being alive. However, I did quite enjoy listening to them in order, along with a few songs I had never heard. It was a good time, surprisingly. 4/5

Yeah, this is his best album. Brief but makes a hell of an impact with some of the best songs in pop history. Michael’s voice, the production and performances are largely A-tier. Still going to be 4 stars/A- because I’m not as hot on certain songs as others. Also, man guilty.

classic

HEEE HEEE

This album really is so good in so many ways. Mostly on the production front, the instrumentals sound so smooth and polished that the songs just float by so nicely. Obviously the classics on here are awesome, but most of the other in-between tracks are pretty incredible, although maybe not as immediately poppy. 8/10

Big shoes. big, big shoes. Huge cultural shadow, the good songs on it are classics... and there's other songs on there too I guess. idk on the whole I might actually like Bad more

You're a vegetable (you're a vegetable) You're a vegetable (you're a vegetable) Still they hate you (Still they hate you) You're a vegetable (you're a vegetable) You're just a buffet (You're just a buffet) (You're a vegetable) This is a legit lyric from a top-ten single from one of the best-selling albums of all time. Mindblowing. This album is genuinely catchy. It is, however, Michael Jackson. Who was a problematic guy. Divorcing the artist from the art, this is an easy 5*. Do I want to divorce them? Not really.

I'm not the biggest MJ fan, but this is a great album, of course! Saved tracks: Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', Thriller, Billie Jean

MJ was king.

The hits sound a bit different with context of the full album. As much as the phenomenon itself is not surprising, the funky disco rest of the album is, a bit. I mean, I don't know what I expected, it's pretty logical. But still didn't expect this. xD

I get it - he's the King of Pop. And I must admit, his artwork is thrilling (lol), but after all these years he has become quite dull to me. What is more, the album feels more like a compilation than an album. Just a mix of different sounds, and yeah, deal with it.

Truly classic pop album. Both title song and "Billy Jean" are great, timeless. I really like that kinda background sounds that Michael was making in some songs.

Iconic album already knew almost every song and can see why its hailed as being a classic.

This album definitely belongs in the list. I'm not a Michael Jackson fan. I hadn't played the album before, but I knew every single song except the last one. It's not my style, but there's nothing to complain about on this album. Favorite song: wanna be startin' somethin'

PREFS : Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', Baby Be Mine, Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean MOINS PREF : The Girl Is Mine

Best-selling album with ephemeral hits including the title track, "Billie Jean", and "Beat It" Jackson's post-disco pop acclaimed as maybe the best pop record of all time. Hard to separate the tracks from their pervasiveness but it is enjoyable and an easy, catchy listen.

Favorite song: Beat It

solid record by the king of pop. although a musical star already, this album launched him into the stratosphere and made him a household name. the album contained nine songs, of which seven(!) were singles. impressive. in fact, this album is the top selling album of all time. highlights: “wanna be startin’ somethin’ “ “billie jean” “PYT (pretty young thing)”

Full of classics, many of which still hold up.

Excellent album, but definitely an abuser. Can we really still enjoy his work knowing he took advantage of so many children?

Solid album. Excellent production and a few bangers for sure.

Classic

classic but paedo

A classic

The McCartney collab is a bit naff and I've never really liked the title track but there's some all-timers here. Sounds fantastic too, crank it up on some good kit

really solid album. At one point it had back-to back-to back hits. Just didn't hit that 5/5 rating for me. really solid 4/5

4/5. An influential pop album with many classics and hits but the bookend 1-2 songs of the album are definite misses. If this was an EP, with the middle 4 songs, it would be perfect.

Good songs

It's a good album, some great songs on it. Not sure I enjoyed the front to back listen that much, Thriller itself feels slightly out of place maybe? Or maybe all the songs I know particularly well do. Paul McCartney song is weird

Otroligt album

It's a weird position. I can see everything thats great about this album, even if it's difficult to see past Jackson himself. But it still sounds dated in places. Dated, but so well done.

I am indeed a vegetable

Amazing album, so many huge hits.

favs: Billie Jean, Beat It, Thriller (the obvious 3 lol) least fav: The Girl Is Mine

While I do think that Thriller, Beat it, and Billie Jean is one of the best trio of consecutive pop songs in history, to me the rest of the album just isn’t consistent enough to get to a 5. Still very very good. Sorry!

Lots of great hits

Heel solide, maar net geen 5. Zou het album niet heel snel opzetten.

Some bangers

There were a lot of hits on this album. Thriller, Beat It, PYT, Billie Jean. Hard to not rate this high.

I was never over the moon about this album, and I still was not thrilled (yep...) this time around (independent of what feelings I may have about MJ). Two, or maybe three, outstanding singles, but the rest I can take or leave...and a couple of those I may actually prefer to leave... But the two or three had me absolutely unable to sit still!

four stars for the music - 0 stars for the artist

Classic pop, but a lot of songs are paling in comparison with the hits on this one. Great album either way.

Maybe the most iconic album of the last century: Classic.

- Never realized Rihanna’s Don’t Stop the Music sampled track 1. - MJ and Paul McCartney together is a wild combo but it works. - Billie Jean always makes me think of Drew Barrymore moonwalking in Charlie’s Angels. - The Weeknd is really Michael’s son vocally.

Stone cold classic

No one my age could possibly listen to this album objectively. However taking a fresh look at the cover how did I not notice he is wearing something that zippers? And sideburns?!? I'm not clear what he's laying next to, a nice tiled shower? Still, I can't get enough of the 80's halo and the paisley pocket square. OK so Michael and Paul fighting over a woman like dogs with a bone isn't great. And no, blood never rhymed with neighborhood. Nonetheless. It's Thriller. Beat It. Billie Jean. Maximum iconic. The moonwalk! Minus a star for all that is to come. I can't bring myself to go any lower than that.

Huge hits, not all entirely to my satisfaction though.

Still enormous. 'The Girl is Mine' remains awful, though.

Not a big MJ fan, and really not a fan of 80s pop with all its excessive indulgences. But, this is pretty good. Hard not to groove along. The main problem I have with it, is a lack of emotional connection. The intention of the album was to create an album with each track being as good as the main single, which it probably achieves. However, as a result it feels a little mechanical, creating tracks to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. As much as it doesn't sit well with my biases and opinions on the artist, it absolutely belongs on the list, its influence is undeniable, and so it has to get at least 4, pretty close to 5. An album to play at a Halloween party, not the strongest atmosphere for a whole album, but it works. 07/11/22

El pepe

A strong album that any pop music lover should enjoy. Michael sings excellently but some of the sounds do date the production. Good.

Very 80s, very Michael

Classic alert! I'd obviously heard a few of these tracks before, but not the whole album. Thriller is probably my favourite track. The duet with Paul McCartney caught me off guard

89/100: The album generator saw my review cutting down pop as a genre yesterday and gave me the King of Pop’s best album as a test of my integrity. I guess I fail, well technically I don’t. To call Michael Jackson’s music “pop” is to try to capture the smell of a rose by painting it. Calling “Thriller” a “pop” album strips it of all its nuance and beauty. This album is disco, it’s funk, it’s rock, it’s soul. It’s all of those things before it’s pop, unless you’re simply defining the pop genre as “popular” music, in which case this is definitely that. Admittedly, I have never listened to “Thriller” in its entirety, least of all in one continuous sitting. This is one of those albums that demands to be listened to this way. There’s simply no other way to appreciate this album to the fullest without hearing “Thriller,” “Beat It,” and “Billie Jean” back to back to back. These are arguably three of the best songs of their decade. Not only are they all on the same album, they’re consecutively tracked. This is a bold decision from Michael Jackson, one that would be hard to pull of if the rest of the album fell flat—and even the best of songs can fall flat juxtaposed with those three absolute bangers. But this album skirts that issue. “The Girl is Mine,” a beautiful song prominently featuring none other than Paul McCartney, casually and calmly prepares you for the musical awakening that awaits you in the following three songs (obviously the “Thriller” to “Billie Jean” sequence). The rest of the songs on the album don’t back down either. “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’” gets you bobbing your head, maybe even moving your hips. “Baby Be Mine” grabs you by the hand, twirls you around, and transports you to a dance floor—of course equipped with a disco ball and bright lights. Reeling from the end of “Billie Jean,” “Human Nature” settles you down; puts you at ease; starts a warm, calming fire in your soul. “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” stokes the fire started by “Human Nature” until it’s burning with passion in your heart. Finally, “The Lady in My Life” rocks you back to Earth, aptly ending your journey through this album. A beautiful album.

Half great songs half meh songs

This album became the best-selling album in the history of the music. There are really 3 great Hits on it. But the rest is mediocre. (7/10) FT: Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean

Lots of great stuff on this album, but there are a few forgettable tracks. And then there's "P.Y.T." (more on that later...) "Beat It" was a song I had not hear din a while, but then my kid wanted us to play "Beat It" in the car ALL THE TIME when we'd drive to daycare. That was like... 5 years ago? So I kind of got back in to the mindframe of not wanting to hear the song again. Even with Eddie Van Halen in it. "Wanna Be Startin' Something" is a great opener to the album. So... "P.Y.T.' I have mixed feelings about this song. The whole high-pitched thing is really annoying. The whole bridge works well, but the chipmunk bit is just... ugh. The three non-hits are just ... forgettable to me. But the other ones are pretty strong to me. So on the strength of those, I am giving it a 4.

True classic

4.5 Stars. Always a classic, just not perfect.

3 stars for the music, adding the other for the cultural significance

There were definitely some missed, but the hits pulled it WAY UP

Highlight of MJ's career in all probability.

Great album. Brought back some childhood memories.

Obviously stellar and a "must listen before you die." But I gotta say not perfect wall-to-wall. There are at least two tracks that are totally forgettable.

the classics are still classics and the underplayed songs are that for a reason. As soon as it popped up i thought 5 all day but it's not...quite

Big hits, Billie Jean iconic showstopping, best song ever. Las bailables are not the best, but it's ok.

Absolute bangers, but he is a creepy peado … music wise high score… but he doesn’t deserve it!

Listened to on 8/18/22 4.5/5 Favorite song: Billie Jean, Beat It This album contained some of his most popular songs and it was so good/very upbeat

Full of great 80s pop. Great assembly of music

Many classics here

Classic record with mostly great songs. There are a few duds here, but the hits are insanely good.

I have been in no rush to listen to Michael Jackson's music recently, but it's undeniable that this album has some great songs.

A classic album with great songs throughout. Not his best album, imo, but definitely one of his better. The videos for Billie Jean, Beat It and Thriller are all time greats. Favorites, Billie Jean, Wanna be starting something and Thriller. Interesting side note, the beginning of Hella Good, by No doubt, is the same riff for Billie Jean

It's pretty much flawless right? How many bangers can you fit on one album?

Am interesting mix of stone cold classics and boring ass throwaways.

Like every other person on the planet, I’ve heard most of the tunes on this album. Despite thinking I knew what to expect walking in I was still impressed by the quality of this record. Wanna Be Startin Something really set the tone and Baby Be Mine was an excellent follow up. I swear I’ve heard that beat sampled in a million other tunes and that little robotic synth is oh so good - this one got me dancing in the chair but there was a very noticeable BPM shift around 3:30 that should have been ironed out. Thriller > Beat It > Billie Jean has to be one of the gnarliest triple threats out there! Of the three Beat It is my favorite, that intro is delicious. The Girl is Mine is a groovy beat but the voice over and basically the entire subject of the song has aged horribly. This tune, Human Nature, and The Lady in my Life were a cut below everything else. Standout Tunes: Wanna Be Startin Something, Baby Be Mine, Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean

Hot take: This is a pretty damn good pop album. The 1-2-3 punch of "Thriller", "Beat It" and "Billie Jean" has to be one of the best runs on an album of all time. There isn't much I could say about these songs that hasn't already been said better a million times before; just that they absolutely deserve the timeless popularity and cultural significance they have attained. "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" is an equally amazing opener, and I'm honestly a bit surprised it didn't reach that same level of acclaim. However, while those tracks may be some of the best pop songs ever produced, for an album to receive a perfect rating from me, every song needs to be at least memorable... and that unfortunately is not the case here. While "Human Nature" and "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" are perfectly enjoyable, "Baby Be Mine" is a bit boring. Meanwhile, slower songs "The Girl Is Mine" and "The Lady in My Life" just haven't aged very well to my ears, which seems to be the case for many slower songs that I have encountered from the 80s.. it's just not my style. Is "Thriller" one of the best pop albums of all time? Without a doubt. Does it deserve the acclaim? Absolutely. Is it a perfect listen from start to finish? Not quite, but it may be as close as a pop album will ever get, for me! Standout tracks: "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'", "Thriller", "Beat It", "Billie Jean" and "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)"

Something tells me that little boys are going to love this!

4, some of this is gold and other parts are throwaway

Some fabulous tracks here. Hard to believe that he crammed so many into one album. Amazingly even the non ‘hits’ are good. Baby be mine is a highlight. Seriously good stuff.

This is solid. It's a classic and grovy.

The iconic one, because of all the fantastic hits that are classics today It is a a landmark pop album alright, however moving slightly away from the older RnB and soul infused MJ albums, I personally like better. In retrospect it also comes out a bit overproduced (as many soft rock/ power pop/ RnB albums of the 80’s). So for me not the top MJ album as it is to many. Prefer the previous ones.

Cover art. Look sick in retrospect

It's great, everyone knows that. Although I didn't enjoy the last few songs as much. I really dislike when people judge music based on the artist's character. Some just love to spend their time being outraged. Can't relate. Not that I specifically care about MJ though

klasika

merci glee de m'avoir donné la ref de l'intégralité du disque

A good album, a great album even, but one of the best ever? Ehh... seems like a 4/5 to me. There's the huge hits like "Beat It", "Billie Jean" and the title track, and then there's songs that are just kind of there (not bad, but not quite memorable and overshadowed by the huge hits) like "Human Nature" and "The Lady In My Life". Also isn't Paul McCartney like 30 years older than MJ? Why are they fighting for the same girl? I'm sure nobody has made that observation before.

Great pop album

Wow, was this all the way back in 1982? The way it was still so prevalent in the late 80s, I would've guessed later. Yes, of course, this album was and is absolutely massive -- best selling album of all time, the accompanying videos impact on MTV (again, only 1982; still early days of music videos) -- and it was everywhere. I was still mostly into rock, hard rock, etc., all through the 80s, so I didn't actively pay attention to this album at the time, but, as noted, nearly impossible to avoid. Listening to the full album today, I hear quite a few tracks I genuinely enjoy even after all this time. The "big three" -- Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean (dang, that bassline in Billie Jean, so infectious!) -- are to me really catchy and fun, with some real musicianship underneath. I saw the documentary 'This Is It' -- was supposed to be a documentary of Michael Jackson's Summer 2009 concerts, then was recut to deal with his demise -- and seeing in that film how musically talented Michael really was. I don't consider myself a devoted fan or anything, but when his songs worked, they really worked.

Listening to Billie Jean, thriller and beat it back to back is an amazing trio. The album is still strong though does has some syrupy ballad songs that don’t hold up. He was a creep but still had a great album.

very good

“The pulse of America and much of the rest of the world moves irregularly, beating in time to the tough strut of 'Billie Jean', the asphalt aria of 'Beat It', the supremely cool chills of 'Thriller.’”

Great album

All time classic - owned it on vinyl, and I don't care if he's cancelled, there are some serious tunes on here especially if you go past the obvious ones

I was 11 when this album came out and folks, I cannot stress enough how massive it was at the time. These songs were on radio constantly and the videos in steady circulation on MTV. You were kind of forced to have an opinion on Thriller whether you were into it or not. But the adulation for Michael Jackson here was mostly well-deserved. It was fresh and different for the time and set a high bar for Jackson himself that he never really surpassed. It's been a while since I've heard this all the way through and I wasn't sure how I would end up rating it. Overall, the album has held up pretty well. Quincy Jones’ production is obviously great with bright, catchy songs throughout that are just plain fun to listen to. Jackson is in exceptional voice. He kicks it off in full energy with the awesome "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'." That's a cool song because it's kind of a bridge between Off the Wall Michael and Thriller Michael. Similarly, "Baby Be Mine" has a certain "Rock with You" vibe to it. Further into the album Jackson ventures into newer territory, to spectacular effect. I suppose you had to be there, but "Billie Jean" was really something special and different. People lost their minds when that song came on, it was so cool (not to mention the great video). Similarly, "Beat It" is really different from what people expected of Jackson, with a solo from Eddie Van Halen that seemed so out of the blue, but was pretty perfect. I will say this, you would be hard pressed to find a bigger Paul McCartney fan than me, but "The Girl is Mine" is not a good song. It was a big deal at the time because, come on, Michael and Paul? WOWWW. But real talk, that song is dumb. There is this schmaltzy quality that exists in a lot of Jackson's music that appears on Thriller as well, in the McCartney song, as well as on pretty much all the more ballad-y stuff. Those songs hold up far less well than the songs that built for dancing. You know what, I said basically the same thing when I reviewed Off the Wall. When it was fresh, I’m sure that type of sound was quite lovely. It just lands a bit flat now. Fave Songs: Billie Jean, Beat It, Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', Thriller, P.Y.T., Human Nature

What's there to say about this? It's an almost perfect pop album.

I think this might have been the first album I ever owned. I had it on cassette, and if I remember correctly, I got it for Christmas from my Mom. As a child of the 80s this was completely omnipresent and I was definitely a big fan. He has an amazing voice and the production is incredibly dynamic. An exciting ride with all kinds of unexpected twists and turns in its layers and details. There is so much to love here but I feel like the album is unfortunately sort of mortally wounded by the inclusion of "The girl is mine." If you removed that one song, this would be 5 stars for me, but that song is so cloying it's almost nauseating.

Listen. This may be one of the top pop albums of all time. There's no disputing that. In terms of personal enjoyment, the first half of the album doesn't do much for me. Billie Jean, Beat It, Thriller are of course straight 5*. Some of the rest are just okay for me. I personally do not love listening to MJ, but I get it.

Problematic figure, but a certified hit factory. Hard to argue the hits.

If you can't listen to this without at least tapping your foot, you're not alive and probably a zombie or vampire.

You feel a bit guilty liking this album after the revelations of his private life, but I still think it stands up as one of the best pop albums ever due to its stand out tracks. Shame there are a couple that I skip over every time though

Loved this album….

Finally we get the mirror album to Off the Wall. I think those are his two best? I might light off the wall better because there aren't as many hits on this one but also some of these songs like PYT are a little questionable knowing the singer. Either way, Thriller, Beat It, and Billie Jean are all classics and alone make this a great album.

4 stars just because that McCartney song is awful

i had this on vinyl - got it in like '83 for my birthday or christmas or something - and i had 100% forgotten just how many of the tracks on it were so utterly forgettable. i did have the entire vincent price monologue committed to memory, and totally loved billy jean and beat it (didn't realize till WAY later that that was eddie on guitar!), but like...the girl is mine? i'm sure i didn't care for it at the time, because it made zero lasting impression. sir paul will always be sir paul, but i'd put money on there being an entire generation of us who collectively feel wings was a terrible mistake - his collabs of the early 80s (like this one) just ended up feeling at the time like a weird plea for relevance. anyway, i wanted a red leather jacket with ALL THE ZIPPERS sooo bad - and i have a distinct memory of being blown away by alfonso ribeiro breakin' along with michael...probably around the time michael set his head on fire. weird time, right? oh, and human nature is still pretty rad

Interestingly I've never owned or sat down to listen to the All-time best selling album, but since there was a shit-ton of top-10 singles from it I recognize most of the songs. I've tried to separate the artist from a pretty freaky human with peculiar proclivities for sleeping with young boys (PYT takes on a whole new meaning now) so I can say this is a pretty dog-gone good album. The production (by Quincy Jones), writing and performances are all top drawer. He read the room right and sensed that disco was on the way out so he included harder pop/rock songs and having Eddie Van-Halen do a guitar solo on Beat it was a stroke of genius and Billie Jean is a killer song no matter how you cut it. And then there's also the massive influence he had on the growth of MTV and music videos and dance choreography, even fashion, remember that red leather jacket and the glove? There are a few lame-ass songs on the album though and because of that it doesn't get a perfect score.

I'll start with the usual proviso, "this is not my kind of music, but..." The first but goes out to: I'm calling this purely on the music and the impact that music has had, and not on whether I'd like Jackson to come and babysit. The second one is the main event. There can be no denying of the cultural impact Thriller has had on the world it was released in. First it was Billie Jean, then Beat It with its video, and then the whole world (even those that, at the time, despised Jackson's music) holding its breath and watching the half hour long music video (?) of thriller in a kind of a world premier. These things don't happen anymore, and while the world enjoyed many an improvement over the course of the years I don't know if we're not missing a lot by not having universally shared experiences anymore. So: not my kind of music, but also the music of everyone who lived back then.

Title song, 'Thriller' is iconic, a genuine 5/5 song. Several noteworthy songs in their own right (Beat It, Billie Jean, Human Nature). Didn't care much for the others on the album though, thought the beginning was weak. Surprised at Paul McCartney's involvement on the album.

Loses one star for the cringe inducing outro on “the girl is mine”. Otherwise amazing album.

It is impossible to review this album objectively. But there is no doubt there are some bangers on it

Wow, I just began with such an undisputed classic. Thriller, its apparently dark theme a product of Michael Jackson's struggles as a superstar. With disco stuff losing popularity, Jackson was compelled to make a definitive pop album "where every song is a killer". I haven't heard the bestselling album of all time before, but of course I knew the iconic singles. I've always liked "Billie Jean" and "Beat It". But while the title track has an awesome music video (which is apparently the first MV by a black person that MTV aired) and kickass dance moves, I've never been a fan of it. Still, I can see why this album become a household staple. I definitely heard the rock, the funk, and the soul smoothly blending in the disco pop of this album, its crossovers are all stellar. It's such an explosive and influential pop album. I cannot really assert that every song is definitely a killer. Few songs, especially the last ones, dragged the album. But it's undeniably a classic pop album, and one of the greatest pop album of all time.

Absolute classic, probably my favorite MJ album? "Thriller" is my favorite song for sure, and the music video might be the best music video ever created! More thoughts: it's interesting that this album was described as "darker" by critics initially. It's a more mature voice for MJ but I don't think the songs are any more or less dark than his prior offerings. Just my opinion though.

So many big hits with a couple of tepid ballads interspersed throughout. PYT is an absolute tune and the McCartney duet is a masterpiece

A classic. A couple of weaker tracks ("The Girl Is Mine" etc.) but the strength of the better tracks more than make up for it. As an album I might prefer Off the Wall though.

It was fun to have this come up right around Halloween :) My favorites are probably Human Nature and Wanna Be Startin' Something, but Billie Jean is infectious and the title track is a spooky season essential.

its Michael fucking jackson dude 8/10

Very solid album. No complaints from me. Given its crazy amount of recognition, I feel like I have heard it before from all of the singles, but first time listening to it in album form.

very solid album across the board

Conflicted because this should be an easy 5, but it's hard to enjoy listening to him now.

Should be 5 stars but there are some lame ballads on there

bra gerejer

Thrilling!

Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean. Not a bad run of songs.

The McCartney song is embarrassing, but the rest is pretty awesome. Not a good as OTW though.

Excelente voz, ritmos, melodías de un artista universal. Imperecedero en el tiempo

Awesome songwriting, this album is full of classics! Superb Quincy Jones production brings the sparkle. What could possibly go wrong!

So good.

Still a great album

Always a good time with this one.

Josh gave Bad 5 stars, so I'm assuming he gave Thriller 6. Pop masterpiece. Even the filler is killer. A

That McCartney song, yuck, “gosh darn.” This seems to implicate McCartney in Michael’s pedophilia, now imagining them fighting over a 6th grade boy like a couple of crocodiles fighting over a gazelle. This album has some absolute bangers, Thirller, Billie Jean, P.Y.T, Wanna Be Starting Something and Beat It, but it also seems to suffer from something all his albums do, it has a few stinkers. He can’t seem to write a perfect album. But he sure can write a hook. Even though it’s hard to distance him from the pedophilia listening to all these lyrics these days, but it can’t be denied, a good album molestation notwithstanding.

The Lady in My Life.

Think what you want about the man, this albums a classic
