Tom Waits
4/5
The best thing about Tom Waits is that he'll either take you to grotesque places to meet strange characters in full theatrics mode, or serve a wonderfully heartfelt ballad. It's lovely when an artist puts their weirdness on full display. It doesn't necessarily mean I'll like it, but... As per usual, I'm fully on board with Tom. He's my kind of weird.

The stories are interesting to listen to, but the music is so monotonous it's hard to get through the entire album in one go without getting bored. It lacks the dynamics and melodies that make Blue great.

Fugazi
5/5
Fugazi was a love at first listen back when I was a teenager and they've been one of my favorite bands ever since. Engaging and interesting with all of its layers, twists and turns, Repeater never gets boring or dull. Mashing up beautiful instrumentation with brash shouting and occasional jabs of screeching guitars is exactly the kind of noise that suits my ears, even though I get why some folks might dislike it.

This is what should be played to people who say they dislike jazz. If they still say they dislike jazz after hearing this, they're a hopeless case.
Santana

Pretty music, all elegant and well played, but feels like something is missing. Seems to me it would benefit from more excitement, more passion, more life. It fails to really pull me in.

Elliott Smith
5/5
Elliott wrote all of the music on this album himself. Wrote all the lyrics. Sang everything all by himself. Played all the instruments. The only thing missing from a total DIY experience is for him to help build the studio it was recorded in. He did that for the next album. The point is, Elliott was massively talented and hard working and it really shows on Either/Or. I've loved this album for many years, listened to it many times and it never gets old. The melodies are mesmerising, the lyrics a treasure trove where you discover something new in the words during each listening. The way he used mundane words to express complex situations and emotions, jamming three meaningful ideas into three words, building worlds within his music with so much empathy and expressiveness... He was so quiet but so, so loud.

There is a mood that hits me every now and then, and when it does, I crave hearing In A SIlent Way. Sometimes it needs to be played on repeat. Most of the time though, it's hard to get through it in one go. A truly special album.

Nick Drake
3/5
Nick Drake has all the qualities I appreciate in a singer songwriter, yet I find it hard to truly connect to his music. It might click someday, as I seem to feel closer to it with each listen. Five Leaves seems to be my favorite album of his at the moment and I'll most definitely revisit it soon.
Michael Jackson
4/5
About half of the songs on Thriller are of great timeless quality, the other half is good as far as pop is considered and the album would be better off without the sappy catastrophe that is The Girl Is Mine (sorry Paul).
Green Day
2/5
If Green Day were trying to convey some deeper message here, it got buried under the commercial pop sound and perfect production. The album reminds me of my mother's closet, everything neatly pressed, folded into perfect rectangles and arranged by color. Unlike my mom's ROYGBIV clothes collection, Green Day have a wordrobe full of black band shirts they ordered from a catalogue and brand new shiny Dr Martens lined up in neat rows. I'd classify American Idiot as a success on every front since it's very catchy, unoffensive, safe and an enjoyable listen for a very wide audience (if that's what the band was going for). As a pop album, it merits 4 stars. As a punk/rock album, it merits 1.
