A great album with a real range of banging songs on it. Probably my favourite debut album. 9/10

Fun songs and cult classics, but not a fan of the singing. Grates on me after a minute and I don't find it very musically interesting.

Haven't actually heard this before. Not much background with the Arctic Monkeys. Feels like something I should like or perhaps would have liked more if I'd heard it back in the day when it came out. Pretty good straight forward guitar rock. Not sure I'm in love with the vocals but they're mostly fine. That kind sums up my feelings on this album actually... it's fine. Given the theme of the record, I can see why maybe this would have a lot of nostalgia for people who found this at the right age. Decent record but for some reason I didn't fully engage with it. Strong 3 I guess.

Fully impressive but definitely overshadowed by their more impressive and successful AM album.

I had only heard one Arctic Monkeys song before this, and never looked into them. Not bad. Punk rock isn't something I listen to much, so I doubt I would seek them out, but not awful music by any means.

An obvious five plus for me considering its my all time favourite album ever of all time. No bad songs. Could do a six paragraph op ed on the birth of the new frontier of indie guitar bands but will save it for another time

I thought this was alright when it first came out, and still find it pretty enjoyable. A bit scuzzy, a bit garage, and it's refreshing to hear a singer keep their regional accent. You can also detect they have a lounge album brewing, if you listen closely! 😆 Fave track - "From The Ritz To The Rubble" caught my attention this time through!

Definitely knew the band's name before, but that's about it. Don't recall hearing their music. Some cool stuff here. Interesting rhythms, punk-ish melodies and vocals, and tight playing. When I'm in the mood for something with more drive and grit, I could see myself listening to this one again.

Lovely and jangly in all the best ways. And witty! I didn’t realise the lyrics were so cunning.

Goodness me this was good. Not heard anything by the band before other than the hype, which on this evidence is more than justified. The energy, the urgency, the songs, the drumming, the riffs, the baselines and lyrics make for a very large sum of the parts.

The view from the afternoon is the strongest of starts for any album! So nostalgic.

Ik zit heel erg in twijfel over deze artiest. Sommige stukken die richting punkrock gaan zijn heel erg leuk. Lekker snel, lekker melodieus. Maar andere stukken lijken wel metal, ska of hebben "progressief" overgangen. Dat is dan weer niet zo mijn ding. ****

My daughter loves this group although not sure how she feels about this album. She would probably be devastated to hear that I think this is just okay. There are few songs I liked but most of it was just okay to me. Prolly 3.5/5

It’s just an „okay” album for me. I wouldn’t necessarily skip it, but I definitely prefer the „AM” album and that vibe, which on the other hand I totally love! Can’t deny that the riffs are usually on point though!

Bangers

Unexpected gem from 2006. Having never heard of this band at all, it is rather surprising how meteoric their rise was following their debut. "A Certain Romance" bringing back playful memories of ska with its rhythm, the final song is a fitting finish to what has been a trip down memory lane, tracking influences and appreciating their interpretation of their predecessors. "Mardy Bum" in a weird way, the pop-sound provoked a super odd memory of Sheryl Crow's "All I Wanna Do" in its seemingly care-less delivery. Do with that, as you will. Overall, Arctic Monkeys did well to be their own sound yet offer up significant homage to their upbringing and influences. A fine example of how music evolves with joys of the new, and cherishing past and present.

It is a bit of a classic isn't it? There are some really great tunes on here and lyrically it's like Rock and Roll Alan Bennett

I never want to become a person who doesn't think 'get on your dancing shoes, you sexy little swine' is not a brilliant lyric to open a song with. This is essentially the soundtrack to my first year at university. I have a great memory of my friend whose American and really into AM get so excited the first time we got in a taxi and he saw the "red lights indicate doors are secure" sticker!

I was really impressed...

Surprisingly better than I expected. I have somehow grew to hate artic monkeys cause their latest albums suck IMO, but I remembered the old times where they were good...

Well this goes straight to the top of my "knew they were critically acclaimed but never sought them out" surprise list. And another one that I can't find anything that I don't like and nothing else that I would ask for. Listened three times. Every song hits. Noticed the bass lines and drums a lot more in the repeat playings. Great energy without being screamy or annoying and lyrically great without being complicated or pretentious. Definitely checking out the rest of their catalog now.

i worry album art is more of an afterthought these days. maybe not to the artists but more so for listeners. it's such an important part of the experience. In this case, for me, a negative one. I don't know why but I hate this album art and it's legit having a negative effect on listening to the album.

Super “throw-on”-able. Short and sweet, catchy and sexy, and full of spunk. This was a big hit for me.

This was surprisingly strong, sexy, and fun. I would say that overall it lacked a "need" to come back for me, but I happily would.

I'd heard I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor on the radio and thought it was alright - not amazing, but not crap either. Then a mate played me the full album and I got it. This would easily go into my top 10 albums of all time.

One of the great debut albums. There was nothing like it when it was released. Witty, gritty, loud and demanding endless replays. Lots of stand out tracks too.

Exciting debut album from the Monkeys, but it does have a problem of songs sounding very same-y throughout the entire album which holds it back a little bit.

1. Loud. Reminds me of Fall Out Boy somewhat maybe but different instrumentals. 2. What this is so good. I love the guitar and energy. 3. This sounds different. Lol the rockstars practicing their lines lyrics. Proof that love’s not only blind but deaf lyric is hilarious. LOUD. I like the outro. 4. God So Loud 5. Love the intro. Why so loud?? 6. Yay LOUD casual misogyny 7. Interesting. Less loud 8. Oh loudness is back. I like when they sort of shout in unison. It’s sounds cool. 9. I really like the intro. I think this would grow on me a lot. It has more melody than a lot of the other songs. 10. I like this a lot. It’s just so loud. I don’t think this album was made to listen to on AirPods (obviously) and as such it could probably do with some remastering. It might sound a lot better on a god stereo system not on earbuds. The outro is a bit long. I think I’m just getting loudness fatigue. 11. I like this. Story telling is good. I’m really fatigued by the instrumentals on this album. But I like when they soften up the background instrumentals. 12. Saturday night/Sunday differences, I like this. The instrumentals aren’t as ear jarring either. I really like the delivery of the lyrics too. It reminds me of something. 13. Drums in intro are cool. I’m getting electric guitar fatigue though. Intro in general is cool. I wish the whole album had striven for closer to this level of loudness. What I like about this album is the way the vocalist delivers his lyrics. What I don’t like is it also just felt like a lot of the instrumentals were unnecessary background noise that didn’t really add anything melodic. And made me get album fatigue much earlier than normal. The album has good energy, interesting lyrics, great delivery, but I don’t get why make it so loud and noisy. What’s the point? I swear my ears hurt now. Favorite Song: I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor 2nd listen: (after listening to most recent LP and highlights from all other albums) 1. This is catchy af 2.Still super into this. Love the montague/capulet reference too 3. I like this but I still think the instrumentals are too loud for the vocals 4. This is just slightly too rock for me 5. Big fan of this intro. The song ends too abruptly though. 6. Slightly too rock for me again but I like the instrumental guitar plucky breakdown/bridge a lot. Last verse is so clever. 7. I really like this sound and I can see the early traces of the future sound of the band in this. The proper crooks line is clever. The instrumentals in the bridge are super pretty. I wouldn’t mind a whole album closer to this sound. 8. I like this a lot but the but the bpm throughout this album gets monotonous to me. It loses its impact at some point. 9. love this intro. This sounds like something else I’ve heard but I can’t decide what. The melody of this is good. I really like instrumental breakdown at the bridge part. 10. Early indication of his thematic interests. I really like the chorus but the verses kinda run together. The drums in the bridge are cool. 11. Roxanne line is clever. I really like sound/vibe of this song. 12. This is just a great song. If this was my genre (it’s not) it’d be a fave. 13. Great intro. Not my thing

The overlong and fundamentally meaningless title about sums this up for me. Significantly less there than what purports to be.

I really enjoyed this one. Especially the excellent instrumentation. I've listened to Arctic Monkeys and enjoyed them in the past, but not this particularly album. I can't listen to them for too long in one go, as I find them a bit too hectic for that. But I do feel like I could listen to them more often and check out their other albums.

(Before I start, I want to note that I'm a youngster yet I have never heard or listened to Arctic Monkeys before, so I come in with no expectations.) One of the many bands that follow The Strokes' indie rock revival derivative of punk and garage rock. And in this album, the sources are much clearer, with direct, confrontational, and angry lyrics. The instrumentation is, however, much more complex deriving from alt rock of the prior 20 years (I'm getting big Britpop vibes), but incorporating both the spirit of punk and several techniques (most notably the use of breaks to give up and start all over again). This comes in an age where punk bands knew their target audience and appealed to exactly that... But it helps that the band started when they were also teenagers. That is, there is a great level of teenage angst covering themes of nightclub culture. The tracks are solid, with each retaining the high energy and angst to remind me of its punk origins, yet also rotating with softer lyrics that display a plethora of adolescent emotions. As a punk fan, this is an album that gets better with each listen, and after getting used to it, I'd love to explore the rest of the discography.

Energetic like only young new bands can record. Witty like the best writers and sung in Sheffield vernacular too. Great fun.

Really good, except I have a visceral reaction to Alex Turner, aka British Fred Durst.

It's too bad Arctic Monkey's follow-up, "Favourite Worst Nightmare," isn't on the list. It opens with "Brianstorm" - not a typo -- "Brian Top marks for not tryin' So kind of you to bless us with your effortlessness We're grateful and so strangely comforted" Which reminds me so much of these reviews. I don't think they're "not tryin'," but they do make it seem effortless. As for Arctic Monkeys and "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not," more top marks are deserved. This was their debut, and they made a huge impact. I listened to their first two albums a lot, but didn't keep up with them. I don't know anything from their 3rd or 4th albums, which I think weren't as commercially successful. (The debut was actually a really huge hit, but I don't recognize any songs from 3 and 4 - no US radio play?) Their 5th, "AM," was also pretty big and I know some of those songs, but I don't know their most recent record. But "Whatever" absolutely holds up. (So does "Favourite.") So much great energy and brilliant lyrics from Alex Turner. He has a refreshingly different English accent and style of singing after too much Brit-pop on the list. I also enjoy the thematic nature of "Whatever," without it being a full concept or story album. I was thinking about going with a 4, because I think "Favourite" is a little bit better (the rare improvement on the sophomore album). However, the more I listen and think about it, the more I realize that they are both 5-star albums for me, with infinite replayability.

Maybe I'm showing/feeling my age, but I just don't have a lot of room for aggressive, loud rock. It generally doesn't give me cathartic release and make me feel better, but tends to come off as noise and make me more tense. I liked couple of tracks on this album that are not so aggressive: Riot Van, Mardy Bum, A Certain Romance. I liked the singer's voice better on these, too, because I could better understand him and follow the story of the songs, stories whose characters fit well with his Scouse voice. Musically, I really liked some of the bass lines (too bad this was the bassists only album with them), and some of the less-aggressive drumming. I don't think I'd listen to this again.

I like the distorted sound. The distortion reminds me a bit of The White Stripes. I can definitely hear the punk influences throughout. It’s enough punk mixed in with rock to pique my interest. I really enjoy debut albums, as this is, because it gives me a sense of the foundation of a band’s sound. Often they are the culmination of years of a group scratching and clawing to get an album made. A lot of times debut albums are self produced or at least not overly produced by the big guns because the studio won’t invest the money yet. This all gives great insight into how a band thinks they want to, or should, sound. When bands are successful and then more people get involved in the making of an album. Some times that results in a band’s sound evolving in a positive way from exposure to beneficial influences that keep the sound fresh and/or polish the rough edges in a professional way. Other times it can lead to a band’s foundational sound getting distorted, buffed out, and lost, which is a shame. I am intrigued enough and am ready to listen to this album more and more Arctic Monkeys. I hope the future albums retain this raw, distorted, punk influenced, rock sound I’m enjoying.

This album took everything that was good about the British rock bands at the time (stop-start guitars, great hooks, catchy and danceable bass lines, great lyrics) and then turned it up to 11. What I like the most is that you can train your ear to listen to any of the parts of this band - the drumming is solid (far more so than say, Franz Ferdinand), each song is driven by terrific guitars and bass that will stay in your head as long as the lyrics will. THAT is what makes this album so impressive to me - the sum of its parts is stronger than any album I've heard in a long time. Another point to make is that this album honestly has no weak tracks at all. Zero. Every song is, at worst, above average.

It's 5 stars. We all know that.

Post-punk revival album - not my go-to choice for casual listening , but good pump up music for the gym (fast paced, punchy drums and rhythm guitar) 3.5/5

A disc i heard a lot of times. It´s a refreshing young version of rock that we need in those years of the begining of XXIº century. By the way, i love song called "I bet you look good on the dancefloor". Very coloured songs.

Hell, thats really Punk-ey. Not at all like their recent albums. I dig the energy, but I strongly dislike the guitar sound. Vocals are, as always, really good. But I guess its a good rock/ punk album? I really don't know. Its fast and explosive.

A modern day punk record you can dance to. For a debut album it’s a masterclass in rocking out and having a blast while doing it. Every track is cool and riffy and flying through at the speed of sound.

I've loved this album for a couple years now so this will be biased. My favorite project from the the band even though AM is more popular and has a more pop-y sound. You can hear the grit of the concerts in the music.

Amazing album. In my personal opinion the Article Monkeys best. This album just has such great energy to it. The whole thing feels like a night out in bars and clubs. One of my all time favourites.

Love this album!

Ferocious and snarky dance punk that hits hard from the first to last track! Somehow I overlooked this band when I was in high school and only really ever listened to the singles. Will have this one on repeat for a while.

Whatever I say it is, that's what it's not. It's alright. I love the guitar. Sometimes I really enjoy the lyrics. Other times I couldn't care less about them mostly because I simply cannot relate. It's like Holden Caulfield rocking about his various late night bar-hopping escapades.

Good but not really for me

I can't put my finger on why this doesn't connect with me at all but there it is - it just doesn't. The description would ideally sound good to me: British guitar rock revival with an edge. But if you tend towards getting chills and sucked in by a killer hook or melody...this album doesn't have that for me at all. Not terrible but personally not memorable nor enjoyable. 2.

One of the best debuts in the last 30 years. When the Sun Goes Down is one of the greatest riffs in indie rock.

Arctic Monkeys are in the top 10 of the wildest concerts I have experienced. I had the pleasure of seeing them perform in Leeds (almost in their home town Sheffield) and I can tell you, people went insane and it felt like standing in the middle of a British football match with the cheering fans and the roman candles and all. This album reminds me of the last half of my teenage years and even now I can appreciate this album and how well it is put together. I will recommend it to anyone who feels a bit of teenage angst or need to reminisce about a simpler time and listen to some good indie rock.

Ну объективно не так плохо и продажно, как их последующее творчество. Плюс, конечно, умом понимаю, что не для меня сделано и не для таких как я. Посему существовать разрешаю, и в целом оцениваю скорее положительно. Энергетика прет, пусть меня и раздражает такое порой. Видно, шо как раз от Элвиса Костелло кусок щапинули, такой же бесперебойный поток подростковых мыслей. Зато хуки неплохие порой завозят, да и в целом музыкальная часть сойдёт. Кроме более медленных номеров ближе к концу — че-то как-то глаза закатывались от них. Хочется тройбан ебануть, но совесть немного гложет, все-таки вполне крепко сбитое и веселое музло для тинейджеров, хуй бы с ним, слушается и слушается. Посему опять 7/10

Может, я просто въезжать стал к концу? Не, хуйня, переслушиваю по второму кругу и снова этот фрагмент более раскачивает. Ну типа бля, я понимаю, что там вроде какие-то щенки, которые похайпили на инди-сцене и забылись порядочными людьми. Ничего уважительного особо не слышал. Но как бы йоу, неплохие треки то, прям вот настрой будто подняли. Что после предшествующих напрягающих альбомов просто роса божья. Проносится довольно быстро, наконец завозя фан вместо духоты. Вроде бы композиционно тоже не примитив, интересненькие решения мелькают. Ну на облоге кун с сигой как быдлан, не одобряем, да. Но альбом неплох.

This is a different style than the Arctic Monkeys songs that I know. Not my favorite album tbh, felt pretty same-y throughout. Interesting to see how their music has changed in the past ~10 years though!

this one is jam packed full of nostalgia. listening to this while i've got a bit of back pain is ramming home how old i actually am. though to be fair i definitely don't miss being 21 at all, my kidneys are hurting just thinking about it and its actually quite nice to be a bit pissed off 3 pints. anyway back to the album, memories aside, it has suffered from the same problem that most 2000s indie, take away the killer and the filler is really hard to listen to. there are some absolute timeless bangers on this album but the shit tracks give you a window into the self absorbed shitty nature of that indie movement. perfect for a pisshead student but must have been a cancerous bunch of people to anyone not involved in it. i hate young people. they're awful.

Ok music, irritating vocals

The Arctic Monkeys' Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not is appealing right out of the gate. It's got energy to spare, a nice direct sound, and the band is incredibly tight. But by the second song, I was getting worried. They are already recycling musical ideas. It turns out that the Arctic Monkeys are artistically monochromatic, reworking the same tropes over and over. It's dispiriting. Even old punk bands like The Clash had more arrows in their quiver than this. The Arctic Monkeys take limbs from the corpses of their favorite bands (Franz Ferdinand, The Strokes), which are themselves stitched together from other bands (The Clash, Ian Dury), sew them together, and then attempt to breathe life into it, pretending like it's something new. It's fucking boring. Now, I haven't yet addressed the lyrics, which seem to address various aspects of nightlife. Actually, the music is such a turn off, I don't think I will.

Prefiero los álbumes "Favourite Worst Nightmare" y "AM", pero este es su antecedente y por eso hay que quererlo.

If Arctic Monkeys came along 10 years earlier I think I'd have been a huge fan purely because of the kind of music I was listening to at that time. Really like this album though. Highly influential too. 8/10 ⚽ Euro player: Gordon Banks. Sheffield born. Internationally famous. Might have been more apt if it was a Pulp album seeing as his nephew is the drummer.

A second day in a row of actually enjoying the album I'm listening to...yay! A nice trip down memory lane. I bet Peter Schmeicel looks good on the dancefloor so let's go with him.

Muy de los monkeys. Casi estilo propio aunque este estilo me deja tibio.

Vieles macht der Lad Rock richtig, spiegelt die Seelenlage des Pint haltenden Insel Blokes zu Anfang des neuen Jahrtausends wider, erzählt Alltagsgeschichten für Anfang Zwanzigjährige, die ihren Weekend Thrill mit Stadionbesuch und Kneipentour selbstzufrieden ausschöpfen. Welch verführerisch einfaches Leben. Irgendwann waren wir ja alle dort, aber selbst wenn sich die Änderungen nicht auf die Ausgeh-Frequenz runterbrechen lässt, so wähnt sich mir dieses Album so seltsam fern, heute wie damals. Songs kommen mit Druck und der schnodderigen Leidenschaft eines sympathischen Saufkumpels durch den Pub gebrettert. Völlig glaubwürdig und irgendwie ausgesprochen britisch. Papierfabrik Köln Ehrenfeld vergibt wohl ewige 5.0 und ich haue diese in salomonische Hälften. 2.5

This album reminds me of my teenage years. Dirty guitars, funny lyrics, MASSIVE drumming. One of the best first albums by a band in rock history. I'll keep listen to it for the rest of my life.

Listening to this in 2021 seems derivative, but there were a lot of standouts in this album the songs have a very clean structure, and good variation. They never dwell too long on any given theme or melody which keeps you engaged. will probably need a few more listens to form a full opinion

stone cold classic. Being this from the golden era of intenet bootleg I did not hear the real final mix until many years later, I still like some of those demos better than the final version but it is without a doubt one of the great record of my youth. now, 15 years later my favorite is A certain romance, it just has it all, it is the complete time stamp of those day. damn I love this record.

Tan repetitivas como siento todas estas bandas de Garage Revival también siento que lo que escribo aquí termina sonando igual. Sin embargo no tengo otra forma de decirlo realmente; suena bien... todas las canciones terminan sonando indistintamente iguales, la producción y el sonido son igualitos a los Stripes y los Yeah Yeahs... Sigue siendo una masa medio amorfa de bandas que suenan todas muy similar decente de música de fondo pero sin mucha propuesta que cambie. Debo decir en este caso no había escuchado nunca a los Arctic Monkeys, al menos no consciente de que fueran ellos como para recordar una canción y hasta el momento de las bandas que llevamos del género son los que menos me han gustado. Siguen sonando decente pero al menos los otros quizá tenían un par de detalles más personales. Esta banda se pierde aun más y se siente más genérica que las anteriores. Decente, nada más que decir. Se me hace gracioso pensar que me quejo de este género y dos de mis músicos favoritos (Rammstein y Rob Zombie) pueden ser, justificadamente criticados de tener música muy repetitiva; la diferencia creo es que en esos casos solo existe un Rammstein y solo hay un Rob Zombie; pueden ser repetitivos pero son muy reconocibles y de estilo propio. En este caso el problema es ese... decenas de bandas que corrieron a hacer exactamente el mismo sonido... Música buena genérica de fondo otra vez...

Discazo por donde se le vea. Mucha energía, es sobrecogedor. La mejor es Mardy Bum pero tiene grandes canciones como When The Sun Goes Down y Fake Tales From San Francisco. Se siente fresco y acelerado, lo cual hace fabulosos los momentos donde bajan el tempo y puedes recuperar un poco de aire. 4.5 que sube.

Great album! Never really gave the Arctic Monkeys a chance so plan on seeing what else they have to offer.

Primero lo primero: este es un GRAN disco, independientemente de su historia. Tenía mucho tiempo sin escucharlo, tanto que ahora pienso si realmente lo escuché completo la primera vez o no. Me gustó (re)descubrir las canciones, y transportarme a la época en la que salió el disco. Es increíble que ya hayan pasado 15 años! Desde el punto de vista histórico, para mí este disco marca el inicio de una era en la que un grupo de jóvenes fue capaz de producirse y promoverse a sí mismos, sin necesidad de pasar por los canales tradicionales (las disqueras, en este caso), y se replica actualmente en otras formas: gente que publica sus propios libros, que desarrolla aplicaciones millonarias o produce sus propios programas de televisión, utilizando internet como plataforma.

Kinda sparse, a lot of the songs sound the same. Would've probably loved this when it came out and I was in my indie guitar rock phase.

Lo más reciente de los Arctic no me gusta nada nadita y cuando tuve oportunidad de verlos en vivo (2016 o 2017) me parecieron aburridos y demasiado centrados en un Alex Turner ególatra y con aires de seductor. Dicho lo anterior, este disco me parece una joya (aunque en su momento la presna lo exageró un poco), especialmente con sus cambios de ritmo en baterías y guitarras y el montonal de energía en casi todas las canciones.

An insanely great debut album. Thought-provoking, raw lyrics with infectious hooks combined with an understated voice that blends into a well mixed band. There is a commonality between the songs in how the band sounds, but each song lives on it's own and has their own character. Every component has a role to bring these songs to life. One of my favorite albums. Don't think there is a bad song on this album. Stand-outs: Mardy Bum, From the Ritz to the Rubble ,Riot Van, Dancing Shoes

When the sun goes down came off as the obvious hit, good track, rolling stone labeled this one of the top 30 debut albums of all time in 2013, I don't get that but it was a decent listen

Sounds like a classic, but it doesn’t behave like one. Great production but it lacks a cohesive team, however the performances feel present and vivid.

Really, really wasn't in the mood for this. Jangly britpop-punk, probably playing thru AC30s, excessive northern accent, songs about sleazy club pickups, really just the whole bag of tropes. They probably say "lad" unironically. 2/5.
