Reviews (page 13 of 14)

I liked it but I imagine teenage me would have been way more excited by their britpopness. Makes sense considering the album came out when I was sixteen.

Arctic monkeys rule, this album just isn’t their best. It’s still good, and I enjoyed it, but they have better material

Really solid alternative rock album

Catchy but derivative, a pastiche of post-punk sounds and styles from decades past but not offering too much in originality

Not good. Not great. Sorta poppy for my tastes. Reminds me of a more hipster Oasis.

Listened before

Too much brit for me

I don’t think I’m a fan of the long British lyrics, kinda makes the fun instrumentals boring. Idk I’m just not really interested in it right now. Picked up in the second half.

I knew the name. Friends were hyped. I never understood why, and this didn't help. The Arctic Monkeys debut is fast, guitar-driven Sheffield indie — lads in a room playing 20% faster than necessary. Everything sounds like the same song at slightly different tempos. "Riot Van" slows it down deliberately, which at least proves they can. The rest doesn't. The attitude is the other problem. "Too cool" as a personality only works if you're already a fan. 2/5 — not my kind of cool. Though the title earns its place: whatever people say you are, that's the thing you have to keep refusing.

I was familiar with their 2018 album tranquility base hotel & Casino, and my friends and I write that album highly, so it was nice to learn more about where they come from. This album would suggest that they really came into their own recently. Maddy Bum is a great song and a couple other tracks had harmonic interest like it, but a lot of this album was relatively uninteresting punk rock. I hope we get one of their more recent albums later on to compare. Feeling a strong two to a light three

Another boring, forgettable British band; 2 stars (a pretty low 2). Also, both the singer and the music sound snotty. Pass.

whatever people say they are is probably what they are very British, very mainstream rock music

Cet homme a une relation étrange avec les femmes

Not my style

This one is on a lot of Must-Hear lists I've read over the years. I tried real hard to like it. It's good, it's listenable and parts are enjoyable but is it a must-hear brilliant album? Only if you live in England. The listener counts are impressive with no song under 65M listens, that's Michael Jackson shit right there. "I Bet You Look Good..." has 564M listens, "Mardi Bum" has 518M and "When The Sun Goes Down" has 548M, what?! They had one song from this album on the radio here so these are mostly Brit listeners. Let me say I love alt rock, that's what I listen to all day. Listening to this I feel like I'm at a bar and the drunk guy next to me is talking in my ear and I don't give two shits what he has to say (but I keep nodding in agreement). I just don't get them or their sound. To each his own. Not an album I could ever sit around and listen to, his voice is grating. Semi-Highlight: "A Certain Romance", Low-Light: "Perhaps Vampires...", I had to stop it midway or I might stab myself in the ear. What are all these listeners hearing that I'm not?! I didn't enjoy it at all. 2.0 stars and I'm being generous. I just wanted him to shut up and stop talking at me. It is draining to listen to this and I will never listen to it again...

Arctic Monkeys is one of those bands that I definitely know, and they have been one of the biggest acts from the last 20 years. Coincidentally, this album is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. There are many things that rise up from this record, from the UK's social influences to the fact that AM was, in some sense, the last of the big British rock bands to have a global impact. The period right after this was mostly dominated by Americans and other genres. The sounds also on this album are also still something that people are chasing today. For me, though, it may be a bit overhyped. I want to like it more, but it just does not hit the way I want it to. I am mostly a melody-listener, so what I am really after is probably more "chorusy" choruses—like a resolve from the dance beat into something a bit more typical.

wow between this and the last two (Raw Power and Now I Got Worry) i'm getting a crash course on the history of garage rock. now, i don't really care for it that much, but i can respect the intent and artistry. as for this album, the only Arctic Monkeys song i like is I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor. that said, i *REALLY* like that song. justifies this whole album even if the rest of it falls flat. deserves to be one of the 1001? i would swap this for AM but i don't think it's a crime to have it on here

Didn’t hate it. But just so-so for me.

i haven't listened to this since its release back in the day. what an odd (not great) time for british indie. i still don't love this. it's fine.

An okay album, no real stand out songs.

Last song was my favorite

Fun i guess but all a bit samey for myvtastes

I did not enjoy at all. Some of the riffs are grand but nothing memorable and the singer's voice grates on me. I'll give a 2.

I thought I would dig this a lot more than I did

British indie

Another great band with good lyrics ruined by a lead vocalist with a really, really annoying voice. I will never understand the appeal of the scream-whining subgenre. Does this music make people feel anything? All it makes me feel is a desire to turn it down or hit skip.

Always felt culturally irrelevant to me and still does. Clubbing lads, all that. As far as rock bands they're competent with a relatively distinct identity, but the hooks are shouty and the riffs are rudimentary. From a distance it appears the band got a little bit more creatively ambitious as they aged but this first album is pretty boring.

I've always found the artic monkeys too horny to be interesting. I enjoy the math rock elements of their sound which really comes out in the technical guitar and bass work. Plus the accent of the lyricist is iconic at this point. But the lyrics are so dull that I can't really get into their albums. 2.5 rounded down

vite fait l'ancien

An essential album in the 2000s garage rock revival. Quintessential but not for me personally, those who love the genre will love this (but they’ve also already heard it probably)

Feel like I should be rating this album higher but it's just not that memorable to me. I can only think of one song that felt really distinct and enjoyable to listen to. Hopefully there's another Arctic Monkeys album later that can redeem themselves to me.

Whatever people like about this record, that's what I don't like

this band is the embodiment of mid

It’s fine. Doesn’t really differentiate itself from other rock bands of the era. I do like the production, but the songs are ultimately forgettable.

Mamy songs, but single one of them lacks any cohesive melodic motiff. Just generic background rock.

It was alright. Great energy, idk why i can't get into it.

1990's garage band

Love it

So, that's what you are then.

Highly energetic and smooth, solid rock album. Unfortunately not to my taste - for me it was ultimately boring

This does nothing for me. I don’t love the singer’s voice and find it irritating after a few songs. I guess i completely missed out on the hype around this band, because most people seem to love it. I am immune to its charms.

I grew up hating the Arctic Monkeys as a concept. I think I may have heard a song tangentially, through a commercial or something, but I never made a point of purposefully listening to Arctic Monkeys before. I pleased to report they are not as bad as I thought. I have some small bit of nostalgia for this era of English indie rock; the kind of bands like the Cooks that would appear on Jools Holland. There are some inspired instances across the album, and as much as I was predisposed to hate this album, I found it difficult to poke as many holes in Whatever People Say I Am.. as I thought I could. There are absolutely tendencies that annoy me, and I doubt I'll listen to this again by choice, but I'm impressed that they're listenable. Arctic Monkeys also sound like they influenced Cage the Elephant and bands of that ilk to some degree

Not impressed

"Post-Britpop" is just as bad as regular Britpop.

Amusing lyrics Inspiration on their sleeve This guy whines a lot

Take half a Citizen Fish song, half a Strokes song, a few lyrics about getting your dick sucked and you're fucking platinum, baby.

Too teenager high school Kind of complains in lyrics. Good for a kick of energy when needed but might be too much most of the time

I honestly liked the instrumentals. It is a good album.

Couldn't get myself to pay attention to it

i'm good, thanks

Alex Turner's voice gets on my nerves after awhile. I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor is catchy enough.

Whatever People Like About This, That’s What I Hate

one of their best but i still hated it

top 3 - Riot Van, Still Take You Home, The View from the Afternoon. I’ve tried to like the Arctic Monkeys and couldn’t, just not for me. I really like the instruments on this one though.

band is basic but tight and the recording is great. can't stand the vocals.

Some good songs, but negative aura loss from 'that rock and roll eh' and 'invoice me for the mic' mean that I give this 2 instead of 3 stars

En niin välittänyt. ⭐️⭐️

This is pretty boring. I think I would rather listen to The Black Album.

Technically impressive; can’t say I enjoyed it nearly as much as, say, AM.

Nothing much of interest, straight forward "good" rock. Inoffensive. Yeah dis ain't for me. 2.5 Stars

It's got a lot of energy, snarl, and humor. It's missing melody and complexity.

it was fine, not really for me. none of the songs really stuck but if someone put it on i wouldn't complain. just one ear out the other.

I never spent much time paying attention to this band and this record didn’t do much for me now. I wouldn’t completely rule out the possibility of it growing on me a little in the future, but on first listen I found it bashy & frenetic and the songs didn’t hook me at all.

I’m not a fan of this kind of music but I do appreciate that they are not a one-dimensional band. While most of the songs have a punk-rock feel, I really enjoy when a band can show more musicality in a studio. Since the first song was very heavy, I thought the whole album would be like that. I was pleasantly surprised to find they multiple sides to their sound.

I've genuinely tried very hard, but I really don't enjoy anything from Artic Monkeys..... can't help it. It's visceral. The only exception is Mardy Bum, hence 2*.

I thought it was okay I only ended up adding one song to my playlist. I've heard of this artist before but I've never really listened to much of their music.

i don’t like i bet that you look good on the dance floor as much as i remember

No thank you.

Ok mais c'est pas trop ma came

Im not really into punk rock

Fairly boring rock music.

this album sounded like one long song, but it was okay i guess

noisy up until the riot song!! but then after i liked mardy bum and the song after..overall not my kind of music because it felt loud in a way i don't like even with the lowest volume. also i feel like this would have been sung by a white guy in a dirty blond shaggy imullet and a leather jacket in the 80s. not that i know much about 80s music.

Ugh, this album was a boring melange of bland rock sameness. It's fine, I guess, but I never got into this band and this album did not convince me to go any farther into their catalog.

There's an energy to this but I'm so far left unmoved. I don't love the singer. The playing is certainly adequate, but there's not really a lot of hooks that grab me. Honestly, I know they have bigger hits but based on this I'm not sure how they got so popular. Were we this starved for vaguely garage-influenced post-punk or whatever in the 2000s? I like Riot Van more - it's slower and atmospheric, and Mardy Bum has an actual catchy riff. Meh.

I imagine this is what people listen to when they're too big of virgins to even try Weezer

Album que me abrio la mente a artic monkeys pese a que me disgustaban, pero esto es un paso a aceptar cualquier tipo de artista o agrupacion sin prejuicios. Album no de mi gusto pero eventualmente escuchare mas de ellos

All these songs sound the same and I don’t care for the same vocal effects on every track

Noise.

Ugh ... more recycled drivel. My current average for music between 1990 and 2020 is 2.27. Why is so much of this detritus on this list.

This albums surprisingly not that bad, I kinda expected some ass since ive heard nothing good about arctic monkeys but this is solid, I like a lot of the songs but the album can definitely be repetitive at the beginning.

Wouldn’t listen to it again

A decent album but I don't know if it is '1001 Albums' material.

Sounds like a temu version of Frank Ferdinand from 2004.

not a big fan. used to be so i know this album, not gonna listen to it now im just gonna rate it lkke a 2

i like the concept but every song sounds the same which could be that's what every night at lucy's was like

Kann man gut nebenbei hören, kann man auch lassen. Die Arctic Monkeys haben mich nie so sehr erreicht, wie andere Bands dieses Genres.

What genre does this want to be when it grows up? A bit too on the punk nose for me at this point in time. Listened before? N Saved some tracks? Favorite tracks? San Francisco ⭐⭐ Didn't hate it. Didn't like it. Saved no tracks.

TREND ALERT : instrumental number the monkeys do be drumming that drum and strumming that guitar its definitely tea but its kinda not my cuppa tea music that can only exist in one era of the timeline i dont think this work aged like fine wine but i do get the appeal before if only i lived it who knows maybe i would’ve shoved this down my throat or ears rather.

Just have a hard time getting into the Arctic Monkeys....

Another one that doesn’t do it for me.

Ya I feel this pero so weird that the 500 albums was arcade fire and this is arctic monkey play on alliteration

Not a fan when this came out and nothing has changed. Couldn't understand the appeal then and can't see it even more so now.

they've put horny in the water in the 2000s it seems extremely adolescent as expected from adolescent musicians gave me a headache/10

Musically, I'm digging it. The vocals, though... hate 'em.

Oh my god they’re like lame fall out boy…

It was fine? Nothing really stuck out to me except the dance floor song, and that's mostly because I heard it a bunch when it first came out. I suppose the best part of this album is that I woke up this morning with my mind playing "I wish that you looked good on the dance floor... ", so that's kind of amusing.

i liked the sound of the opener, the vocals and tempo were interesting and varied enough to keep my attention, though i didn’t care for the lyrics. the rest of the album blended together in an irritating background noise and i was just waiting for it to end. 2/5 just because at least i liked one song.

Favorite track(s): Frankly they all sound so similar that I couldn't distinguish one from any other

C'est ce qu'on entendait quand j'avais 17 ans, donc on devrait adorer. mais non..

You can tell the singer just loves the sound of his own (mediocre) voice.....if he could actually sing this would actually have been pretty awesome, but it was so distracting

Maybe I could enjoy this album more if the title was longer, because right now I feel it's a bit short. And also if music could also be a bit more generic it would please me greatly.

Normy-core rock pablum. There's nothing here that hasn't been done waaay better before

I like a few Arctic Monkeys songs but hadn't listened to much. Only a couple songs grabbed me here

H: this was the definition of mid. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t good either. There wasn’t anything to get excited about or want to listen to ever again. 4/10 H fav song: A Certain Romance Z: I’m thinking this early 2000s alternative rock genre just isn’t for me. Nothing quite special about this one— fuzzy vocals and loud noises. 6/10 Z fav song: Mardy Bum

Boring, through & through

A mediocre british rock album, and another one that was relatively same-y. I probably would have enjoyed this back when I was in middle school but now its just not my taste

Like a thps exclusive band.

No es mi estilo

too clever and weird pace. relax. its like if the strokes were not cool but were anxious and twitchy.

No do not like this band

No me gusta esta banda. No me gusta. No. Nota: 2.5

Meh. Not super into it

Oi, you sed whut, m8? I’ll bsh ur fkin’ ‘ed in m8. Swear on me mum.

Arctic Monkeys, _Whatever Peepo Say What I Am, It's What Im Not Innit?_ 🌟🌟 If early 2000s British pop rock was a little too polished, then maybe late 2000s was a bit sloppy. From the very first words of this album, the lads are here to remind you how rough and tuff and working class they are. It's a fairly generic and unsurprising mix of punky radio and teen-friendly rock and it kinda bridges the gap from... like Franz Ferdinand to... Kasabian? But who cares really. I propose a new title. Whatever People Say Wire Isn't is What Arctic Monkeys Is---so go listen to Wire instead. Or another band with some original ideas.

I kinda feel like this is okay enough, but I can just listen to The Strokes instead and like it way more.

When I hit play, I thought this group was going to be mid 00s house music, so this is immediately jarring. Not a bad thing. This band sounds just like another band I have heard but I just can't place it right now. I'm think Jet or The Strokes, but that doesn't feel right. It distracted me the whole album, maybe franz ferdinand but that feels wrong too. Overall, if I had heard this in 2007, I probably would have loved it, because it sounds just like this other band I already like, but, like this other band, probably couldn't place the group when I needed too. Its a shame I only heard this today.

En pidä. Laulettu todella ärsyttävällä tavalla. Instrumentaaliosiot aivan kivoja.

I’ll never understand people who love Arctic Monkeys. Riot Van is a pretty good song

Why do all these bland early aughts “rock” bands sound exactly the same?

Possibly the most overrated rock band of the 21st century. Never really got into them and this album didn't convince me.

Not list worthy

It's not bad, a lot of catchy tunes. The vocals kind of get stale, I don't know what it is, maybe the effect that was applied. Sounds like he is singing on a walkie talkie. Other than that I enjoyed it but it's not something that I would go back to.

Punk, but with someone who can sing. Not angry enough.

Not for me

Felt like a continuous stream of riffiness with admittedly catchy lyrics. Maybe I was not in the mood but I felt like the album was kind of just not all it was cracked up to be?

Idk like less interesting Strokes. The whole Garage Rock Revival thing with the overuse of seventh chords never worked for me. This album is for nicer people.

Arctic Monkeys har säkert haft roligt i replokalen. Men det är mest tröttsamt och enformigt att lyssna på.

Can’t stand this guys voice so far

This does nothing for me. It's like The Libertines: it's the same empty, overly refined music that wants desperately to be anything but. At least The Libertines were first. And on heroin. The writing here really is - and I hate to use this word - sophomoric, telegraphed plainly by that god awful album title. Get out of your own ass, Turner. There's nothing good up there.

Oh good, I'd always wondered what an Arctic Monkeys was. I'm kind of surprised: I had no idea that "indie rock" was a genre that I apparently do not enjoy at all. Maybe this sounds like a descendant of grunge, and since I missed the 90s, I don't have the background to appreciate it? So yeah, pretty much just fell flat for me.

Listened to about half the album. It all sounds very unserious, not-so-good, and very very mediocre.

This album voted for Brexit. Nothing surer.

This started out, like I wasn't going to like it, and wondering how they survived putting out an album like this. It did get better about half way through, and I could hear the band I'm more familiar with. If I was in a store, listening to this ... I would not have bought it.

It is ok. I was familiar with the more popular songs from radio and clubs back in the day. Loved some of the lyrics, phrasing and delivery. Outstayed its welcome pretty quickly though. Good, rugged no frills production.

Not for me. Good energy. 5/10.

Big monkeys fan. Not their best, however. Fair go. Worst Song: Still Take You Home Best Song: The View From The Afternoon Songs added to Liked Songs:

Ei mikään biisi noussut pinnalle ja odotin kieltämättä että koska tämä loppuu.

I am not an Arctic Monkeys fan, I am an 'AM' fan.

the oasis of the 2000s (both suck)

I used to listen to these guys a lot a decade ago but there's a reason not a single song from this album was in any of my playlists

I have very little experience with these blokes. But it’s fun I guess? 2000s pop punk was such a full genre and then these muppets came about. It all feels like background music for the OG version of Shameless (derogatory)

i actually can't do this i'm getting flashbacks to my a level art classes

This is not extremely bad, but is rather boring/mediocre. I like the sound, but not the songs, which are not that good. The "indie rock" bands that preceded this one (e.g. The White Stripes) are way better and more interesting. Back when all these bands popped out, I hated them. I don't hate them anymore, but still consider (at least this particular one) too soft for my tastes.

I should like this more than I do. The britishness of it gets to me after a while. The songs themselves have great parts but jump around a bit too much.

Not for me. Never been a fan.

New to me. Like the overall vibe, but seems very derivative of the strokes. All of the songs are at the same tempo.

Like all Arctic Monkeys, it's pretty whatever, but I had a good time

point4.

Sorry, but I’m going to put this album in a basket with other shouty stuff from the late ‘90s and early 2000s - The Strokes, The Killers, Arcade Fire, Franz Ferdinand. I didn’t love any of it then, don’t love it now.

Largely forgettable. Lead singer sounds like Sean Connery live

It’s a good sound but feel like I have to be drinking IPAs or some sort of made up coffee drink at a trendy Indie bar to really understand who they are and be cool enough to recommend them.

Lyrics are intersting, but musically what was the fuss about? Truly meh

"get off the bandwagon and put down the handbook" Feels very very 2006, like working through a checklist of what was hot then. Or what was hot just before then, really. Like a Green Day cover band pretending to be Oasis doing cheeky Strokes covers. Somehow this formula makes for The Walkmen, but annoying. The Walkmen at least bring showtune vibes, these guys are a little more Rohypnol® than theater kid. I mean, at least they want you to think that they might date rape you. Pretty sure a lot of 17 year old British kids got laid to this. The children born in the aftermath of that nation-building rut would be 18 today. Listenable, but boring. Production is flat. Dance songs should have bass that sounds richer than farting through a straw.

Couple of good party sounds.

I understand the merit here but I don’t like punk, I don’t like indie, and I don’t like the British. Three strikes you’re out

Fine i suppose, but not essential. Their newer albums are so much better. 2

One of those bands that give me a hangover

Just no✨

not horrible.

Too british sounding. Not charming enough for how badly written. Edgy, but only if i had never tasted anything but beans on toast

They’ve done the fakeout ending trick 3 times, and most of the songs seem to be about

this was too noisy and raw for my tired saturday head. “mardy bum” was basically the only song i enjoyed. i have heard it before, along with “i bet you look good..”. the last song was quite nice.

Good energy but not that into the guitar tone and the frenetic energy. All the songs I like are on their AM album better apparently

ts ass avoid at all costs

I don’t get it. It sounds like all the worst parts of good genres smushed together. Not unlistenable but bleh.

Such a 90's sound but all the songs sound the same. Shame if you listen to this rather than The Strokes or even Franz Ferdinand. Though I wonder if FF all sounds the same now too. I bet it might.

Hate this band but gave them benefit of the doubt. Album was a solid little romp, saves them from 1 star...

It had some edge, but not enough to save it from sounding repetitive.

The band that dares to ask: what if the Strokes, but worse?

I remember this one. It's alright. Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion.

This sort of grew on me as I listened, then unfortunately I grew off it again. This probably just means the tracks in the middle were OK, while the rest weren't. Worth a 2 though.

"Whatever people say I am, that what I am not" feels like an overwhelming sensory experience — loud, jangly guitar riffs, powerful percussion, assertive vocals, and everything else thrown in. It's a complete information overload hitting you at the frantic pace of a blurry night out. This exudes the confidence of English charm, presenting a vivid (and somewhat satirical) depiction of pub culture. Influences from the Pistols, Jam, Smiths, Oasis, and Ian Dury can be found throughout these tracks. However, I don't find any of the songs particularly memorable or engaging. This might be due to the rapid tempo and similar rhythmic foundation that most of the songs share. Overall, it's a decent album, though not particularly memorable. It's not something I would choose to listen to again.

Every song sounds the same with his voice

I thought that maybe this album will gather more of something when getting to closer to it's end. I was than listening second to last track. I gotta admit that I was rather focused on my writing tasks while listening to this album and distraction played significant role on this occasion.

Feels like another fad band I'm not familiar with, except from the critic circuit hype of the time. I'm happy to say that they don't sound as irrelevant as I was expecting up front. I can't say whether I've heard their music before or not, probably yes, but who knows. The time this came out I was part of the heavy/extreme metal scene; doing interviews, reviews and also DJing at relevant clubs and events, few of them I was part of crew or were my own. At first listen this plays like a rougher on the edges Blur. Soon I realized this was the from the new era of british rock music, but the initial impression is hard to shake off. I like the edge this has sound wise, it doesn't sound too polished and mostly has the gritty feel a rock album should. I don't care about the lyrics, so they're irrelevant to me. Feels like they're about partying and young people romance, but beyond than that I don't care.

I do not like this band, no matter how many times you try to make me listen to them, i do not like this band

Some good ones here and there but it all sounds very similar

Never listened to this back in the day. Feels a like basic and samey samey, but good energy. I probably would’ve liked it more when it was new (I was 24). Kinda like blur without the depth, the strokes but British, reminds me a little off the hives too. Closing track was the only one I really liked.

I am not the target demographic for this. My late ex loved this album and I could never truly get into this guy’s stuff. From a distance this hardly stands out from its crowd of early 00s bands.

Idk kinda boring. It's not really groovy and the guitar tones are mid.

there's not really anything wrong with it but i just have no affinity or patience for all of the 2000s indie garage rock shit

Sweet but it gets pretty boring after listening it for a while

Clicky bits of british rock. I can't say I'm a fan of this type of music. It lacks any edge to me and the lyrics are always dumb teenager shit

Mittelprächtig!

The name Arctic Monkeys implies that there is fun to be had. This album proves that theory wrong.

Not a huge fan of the Monkees or their polar variety.

I dunno, man. I love the Artic Monkeys but literally every other album of theirs is better.

Yet another average rock album, by another average rock band.

Never really was my thing, and I didn't connect with it this time around either.

Nothing special

Never was a big fan of it.

Nothing that hasn’t,t been heard before, don,t understand the hype other than the generations own shouty boys. Highly derivative

Nope. Didn't like it when it came out, don't like it now. 2/5

I like the guitar work but nothing else.

Didn't like this much. Too noisy.

Finds itself soooooooooooooooooooo clever

Nicht meine Musik, zu stressig und punkig

Look my reasoning is petty but I can’t stand the lead singers voice and accent. It made the album unlistenable. Which is a shame because I liked the lyrics and the music was fine enough. But bleh overall

This sounds like someone....I can't place it. This album is trying too hard. I don't know but there was a British band that sounded like these guys at a roughly similar time. This doesn't sound "bad" but it's not compelling.

Not a fan.

Frantic and aggressive British pop rock. Cookie cutter crap that isn’t special but filled a void when it was released. Nothing special, but dudes seemed to dig it.

Arctic Monkey’s debut album did not move waves for me personally. Instrumentally, the angular riffs and taxing chord shapes served to add some much needed liveliness on this project. However, Alex Turner’s vocal performance, coupled with lacklustre songwriting, really hindered what was already a stale sonic experience.

All adrenaline, no feel. Decidedly British.

Lots of love for this across the board, but I lost interest by about the halfway mark. It’s fast frenetic and energetic, but perhaps that the problem as it’s just a bit too busy. It’s not terrible it just all kind of sounds the same after a while.

Third time giving this a go. Annoying.

Polished punk pop sound. But utterly forgettable music. They're like the Libertines without the magic. Cocaine may make for great musicians; but heroine is so much better for making music.

Raw, frenetic, powerful. Yet, personally, the Stratocaster sound and the noisiness gets on my nerves. 4/10

Sonido interesante, parecido a The Strokes, pero not my cup of tea.

I was a teenager in clubs when this came out and I thought it was a bit immature and cheesy even then.

Makes me want to go to a concert and jump up and down Listening on the drive from Breckenridge to Keystone Guitar and drums!!!!! In the mood for something softer so like riot van

It was "ok". I probably would not go back to this album although, I do like the band.

I don't fucking get it. To me, this album sounds as generic as it possibly can. Maybe this was really influential on a bunch of stuff that came later, and that's why it sounds generic to me, but to me it just sounds like shitty, overproduced, underwritten rock that isn't really adding anything to the music that came before it 2/5

This album is a British wet dream Came out when everyone was screaming about real guitars It’s annoying

In the brief moments where I can understand what Alex Turner is yapping about, I find it thoroughly uninteresting, and not relatable, just pap. I really dislike Alex Turner's vocal style with the Artic Monkeys, this is subjective but it certainly precluded me from listening to the album a second time. The best performance I've ever heard from Alex Turner was a live acoustic cover of 'Feels Like We Only Go Backwards' by Tame Impala. I quite like it and that performance is better than anything I've listened to on this album. The instrumentals have glimpses of unique hooks and momentum but it's few and far between. The instrumentals are quite repetitive even between tracks albeit technically sound. Very much a product of its time but I don't think it's held up. The songs in this album elicit very little from me, nothing to chew on. Really not an album for me.

All the tracks on this album have obnoxiously long names. I bet the guy who wrote this album LOVES the smell of his own farts. First track was ok I guess. Nothing special. Second song has a lovely opening riff. I've sorta tuned out the lyrics a bit due to a natural audio filter for British accents but whenever I tune back in I hear the gayest lyrics man. I enjoy the song "When the sun goes down" but other than that I really have no strong feelings about this album one way or another. It's just ok. I enjoy the instrumentation but it's balanced by having lyrics that sound like they were written by a teenage who thinks wearing a leather coat to school is cool. Only like two memorable tracks for me.

Feels wrong to award this the same as Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory, but I've never really liked Arctic Monkeys and listening to an entire albums just confirmed this for me.

If I were to put Arctic Monkeys' amusingly titled album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not into one genre, I would call it indie punk. A lot of this album pulls from punk in the late seventies and early eighties--and it's even reminiscent of glam rock but without the stage presence. Arctic Monkeys put a modern spin on their music, and it's different and refreshing. The vocals, I fear, are drowned out and the album suffers from it--and my enjoyment, too.

Good energy. Punk ish. Not great but ok. I’d prefer to just listen to the clash when I’m want this level on manic energy. More art from the clash.

I didn't love it

British aught rock! There's definitely some catchy tunes on here, and it's kinda teetering on three stars for me. Honestly I'm just pretty sure I would never choose this on the jukebox, unless it was a really shitty jukebox.

Ok. Kinda like Radiohead but more boring and the singer is meh

Like some of it. Good lyrics.

OMG - I guess I missed the email in 2006 that said \"if you want to be in the Cool Club, you have to kitten to Arctic Monkeys\". Damn! well,I never heard of them, nor heard of any of these songs. Didn't miss much - not one stands out worth re-liteing to. I see the band has above average ratings this site, but, you got me~

Yeah, nah.

talented

Kind of fun, but nothing stood out.

Not my genre so I say 😕

Reason why I stayed away from this when I was 19 - pretty basic indie/garage/pop-punk. Tries to be cool and catchy and fails at both. What's with the simpering titles? You couldn't see for lights but staring at me (or whatever)? Vampires is a bit strong but...? Easy 2.

Okay but not my cup of tea.

Middling early 2000s alt rock with a very boring B side.

Like if QOTSA were annoying instead if cool.

Not a huge fan

Blev väldigt taggad då jag tänkt lyssna på arctic monkeys eftersom jag fått för mig att jag skulle gilla dem!! Början av albumet var inte dåligt men tyvärr inte alls min grej dock. Andra halvan var mycket mysigare!! Tror When The Sun Goes Down är en favorit

Naaaah Bästa låt var I bet you look good on the dance floor

A lot of incoherent British rambling. They’re trying to be high energy while not being exciting or danceable. The best parts of the album are the couple slower parts where you can actually understand what’s going on.

every song on this album sounds like the same song and it's not even a good one

Don't love his voice

Replaceable mid-aughts pop rock.

This album didn't connect with me m

Never been a huge fan

I enjoyed the energy of the drums and would probably dig this live. But I mostly found this pedestrian. On an unrelated side note, this 'random' generator has given me 6 albums in a row and 17 out of the last 21 by British artists.

I don't have any use for the ten thousand bands that sounded like this music: hated. (⌐■_■)

Meh. Lad rock. Not my thing. 2.7

Boring

Another puzzler. What's with this writer and British rock bands? There seems to be a bias in favor of British indie rock groups for some inexplicable reason. I don't see the big deal.

Despite British Indie of the 00’s as my preteen/teenage jam, I never really enjoyed the Arctic Monkeys that much compared to their contemporaries.

Don't get the accolades.

I don’t get this album at all! Not very good in my humble opinion

Not my type

Upbeat but repetitive

Irriterande

acoustic is kewl vocal is not so kewl

Woof. Noisy.

Not a fan, too jumbled for my taste

Ok but not really my jam

Overall, an annoying sounding band with one catchy song per album

Bland and boring. Every song sounds the same, there may be a few ones that are a bit different and unique. It's not bad but it just gets repetitive, therefore, I got quite bored after the first songs. I don't think it's a bad record but I don't really get the hype.

secondo la mia modestissima opinione, è un album banale e non troppo interessante

Not my taste. But I did listen to the whole album.

Funny, but not my taste

All sounded the same. Nothing really melodic.

Two decent songs. Otherwise, all the songs sound the same.

Not bad, maybe 2-3 good songs, gets a little repetitive. Sounds like a British Cage the Elephant

One or 2 groovy moments. Mostly just ok. I’m not blown away.

I'm not really sure I like this band, if there's one album I should live it's this one but every time I try to listen to it I can't get through it. I tried again, same results, this just isn't for me

I know that arctic monkeys know how to use distortion on their guitars because they do it on this album and yet they spend so much time opting instead for the most annoying guitar tone ever recorded

The album opened up strong with the first track; odd time signature, interesting. Then it fell off till the last track for me. Not a fan of the lead singer's delivery and whatever processing they put in it for most of the tracks. Best Songs: A View From the Afternoon, A Certain Romance Listen Again: No

Love AMs newer albums, hadn't listened to this one before but it was kind of a let down. Some of their sound now is definitely here, but they've changed a lot for the better in my opinion. Best songs- Mardy Bum, From the Ritz to the rubble

Ok, but not for me

I don't get the hype

Talented chaps and, while I like the energy of this album, I didn’t dig the sound much nor the lead singer’s voice.

One of the MOST overrated indie albums ever. Decent, but not AOTY status like it was hyped at the time. 2/5

Didn't hate this, but also would never listen to this again.

Ok album, don't really understand how this made this list though. Most of the songs sound like the same song.

Seems like rock I guess

Fine- just not for me

not rlly my thing

Boring. Didn't like it when it was released and still don't like it now.

I listened to this album excessively in college and loved them. There are a few really good hits, but overall the album doesn’t feel timeless. It feels very specific to the time period it came out of (2006)

Meh. Lad rock. Not my thing. 2.7

Some catchy guitar riffs and lyrics. As a northerner I appreciate the accent and dialect but to me the vernacular turn of phrase used throughout made this seem like a Viz comic rather than musical record.
