Something like this should be right up my alley, and I don't hate it, but there's just something about it that isn't clicking. The current hypothesis is that while the songs are fine-to-good, if they had just a slightly slower BPM they would elevate to good-to-great.
Maybe I just wasn't listening to enough of this in my prime teenage angst years, but I don't really get bands that sound like this. Some solid songs for sure, but nothing that really grips me all that much. Also, British
Not their best album, not a bad listen either.
# 248 - 04/03/2025 - They've done a pretty decent job, all around slightly above average, a fun and energetic album and that one Arctic Monkeys song you remember… 2 1/2 rounded up :-)
Not bad but a lot of Arctic Monkeys songs just sound like Arctic Monkeys songs. 3⭐️
-so this is the fabled “post-Britpop” I’ve heard so much about -in all my years knowing about Arctic Monkeys I hadn’t listened to a single song by them until now. I’d say this is decent. it’s a bit hard to distinguish individual songs I guess, but I like the instrumental and vocal style -Favorites are Mardy Bum and Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong But…
Good sound, although many songs sounded similar in some ways.
7/10 Another one I knew from the first time round. This was a sensation at the time and now has a handful of well-loved songs on it. The rest is extremely energetic punky songs, full of youth but not the highest quality. I have really enjoyed the last 2 or 3 AM albums so this one is a little rough around the edges for me. Best: I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor
Very catchy, cool album. I see why they're so popular.
The palpable energy of English youth.
This one just kinda failed to catch and hold my attention it's not bad sounding, but it's just something I've heard and isn't able to remember much of Standouts When The Sun Goes Down 3/5
Not as good as FWN or AM, better then there other albums
I always feel like I should like this band more than I do. But it just doesn't do much for me. The album is good, but I don't know if I'll listen to it much.
This was a decent debut from Arctic Monkeys. While they were labeled indie rock, they were far from underground—this was a pretty commercial release. The album carries some garage rock aesthetics and a bit of punk edge, but overall, it’s more polished and radio-friendly than what you’d expect from a true indie band.
Really fun to start of, but sadly falls off in the second half
That one Arctic Monkeys song you remember plus some other songs that are kind of like that
Its thematic content has been likened to a concept, generally concerning nightlife, including lyricism surrounding clubbing and pub culture, and romance from the perspective of young Northerners. The album became the fastest selling debut album in British music history, selling over 360,000 copies in its first week, and remains the fastest selling debut album by a band. It has since gone 6× platinum in the UK. In the US, it also became the second-fastest selling independent record label debut album in history. The album received widespread critical acclaim from critics for its depiction of youth British culture and for resurging British indie music that had waned after the 1990s. Cover artwork of the album is a photo of Chris McClure—a close friend of the band, frontman of The Violet May and brother of Jon McClure of Reverend and The Makers—taken in the early hours of the morning in Korova bar, Liverpool[10] after the band had given him, his cousin and his best friend "seventy quid to spend on a night out"
Album started out decent but was very same-sy by the end. Will probably listen again and wouldn’t be surprised if it grew on me.
I liked some of it.
didn't like it then, don't like it now
Found this to be ok. The album as a whole did flow nicely, but I just don’t like this band/type of music enough to really want to listen to a full album. Would do 2 stars
I was hoping they were more than just that one song that I’ve heard before (and don’t care much for). But they’re not.
I don't know. It's frenetic and the musicianship is there. There are some cool things going on. But about five songs in, I was over it.
meh
Liked it enough, but it didn't feel like it had an overall cohesive theme. The songs were fun in an indie rock way, but they didn't captivate or hold my attention like some other albums or artists do. I enjoyed listening, but don't feel like I would listen again. 2/5
It's okay
Track suit rock. Yawn.
Irriterande
Never like them. And nothing has changed even when I tried those lads now again.
Kinda boring?
a bit repetitive, not as a commercialised sound as their later tracks, hate the vocals and the vibe YNN
was this generator made by a white man between the ages of 40- 48?!
Ok. "I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor" is a good song and the rest is forgettable, insincere-feeling Britpop. Not enough ire to be punk, too loose and loud to be polished pop, too many words and too little melody to be notable in any way. Guitar player writes really repetitive stuff, but just obtrusive enough that you can't forget he's there. If there are two of them, it's a crime against imagination. Musicians like Coltrane were widely lauded for the notes they didn't play -- their sense of space. I don't think the vocalist is familiar with that idea.
Nostolgia but bad? Don't know how it made the list
Really, really wasn't in the mood for this. Jangly britpop-punk, probably playing thru AC30s, excessive northern accent, songs about sleazy club pickups, really just the whole bag of tropes. They probably say "lad" unironically. 2/5.
I started pretty neutral on this and got tired of it quick. I don’t get why it’s on here sounds like a throwback to earlier English punk rock.
I never got this band, and listening today only confirms it: these guys sound painfully, unmistakably middle class. Like leather jackets bought from Zara.
It's been a while since we've had something this century. Unfortunately, this isn't very good. Kinda just noisy and boring. I'd probably have given it a 2, but I feel compelled to give it a 1 to offset its undeserved hype.
This album is boring. I can't say much else about it. Every song sounds the same and every song sounds like music you'd hear while shopping at an f.y.e in 2007, and I don't mean that positively.
Incredibly boring repetitive and ultimately not special in anyway.. FUCK ARCTIC MONKEYS
Boring. Totally generic.
Hmm, nah. I love rock music (being a rock drummer myself), but this just sounds like Weatherspoons-core to my ears. I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor is so irritating.
Really good, except I have a visceral reaction to Alex Turner, aka British Fred Durst.
Really enjoyed it
An album I love.
What a debut for one of the greatest bands of the 21st century so far. One banger after another
Fantastic album, Alex Turners lyrics, and the backing band are excellent on every track on this album, we saw them live in 2013 with my 2 sons, amazing. Standout tracks; MARDY Bum, I bet you look good, A certain romance
Great, great, wonderful work. Great songs. Really loved it.
A classic for sure. There's a reason why they got big. Energy is big, the songs tell a story. Love it
Another album that was on heavy rotation in my room when it came out. Still think it's brilliant! We get cleverly constructed tracks with great riffs at the center, really cool drumming, and a sloppy vocal delivery that I just love. These jazzy chords in "Riot Van" and in the intro of "When the Sun Goes Down"? The thick ending of "Fake Tales"? That finale in "A Certain Romance"? *chef's kiss* Not a bad track to be seen. Only two tracks that keep this from being a 5/5 because they're "just" good. Unconditionally recommended, landmark of modern rock music. 4.5/5 - near perfect
I remember the first time I heard the Arctic Monkeys. I was just a kid, and my grasp of English was nowhere near what it is today. English has always been my second language. Even then, I was blown away by the raw power of their music. I was captivated by Alex Turner’s voice and, of course, his lyrics. The way that man commands words is something to be studied. Even at such a young age, Turner could articulate ideas better than most of his older contemporaries. I wanted to speak like Alex Turner. I wanted that command of language—that effortless precision he possesses. I’ll never quite reach it, but I’d like to think I’ve gotten fairly close. I also remember meeting a beautiful British girl in school named Shayda. The first time I met her, she was wearing an Arctic Monkeys shirt. I had a slight crush on her—and on her taste in music. Meeting someone who knew the Arctic Monkeys was rare back then. AM hadn’t been released yet, so they hadn’t exploded in America the way they already had in Europe. Knowing that band felt special, and she knew them too. My friends, Shayda, and I became part of this small club of Arctic Monkeys devotees who found solace in one another through music. Revisiting this album didn’t just remind me why I fell in love with the Arctic Monkeys. It reminded me of the kid who did. For forty minutes, everything felt familiar again. It felt safe. To this day, the Arctic Monkeys have always felt like home. They always will.
Listening carefully, the basslines, the drum fills, the guitar tones, the vocal cadence, all genius
There are a few albums that capture the cultural moment, this is by far one of them. Even as a kid in High School in the Midwest, this album was huge. It offered a glimpse of another life across the ocean, but still something universally relatable in the early internet/social media years. It manages to capture the energy and agnst of adolescence perfectly. The riffs are intoxicatingly high energy, and the songs and sound still stike me as peerless in their execution and originality. The album still fucking rips, even 20 years (!) after its release.
Damn what a great time. Album rules. I liked it even better than when I was a teenager. Must-listen #368
(96/100)
Always.
love this album, favorites are when the sun goes down i bet you looked good on the dance floor and from the ritz to the rubble
cannot justify this being lower than a 5, banger through and through, saved 10/13
Ah- actually looking forward to this. It’s interesting, when I first became aware of this album it was probably almost a decade old already and I was certainly not a youth, definitely long past adolescence. But I loved it! Alex Turner somehow walks the line between truly annoying and properly sardonic, the lyrics are often surprising and fantastically funny, the musicianship is clean. It’s well mixed and while parts start to slog a bit, the production keeps it interesting and pulls it together. So yeah, it might not quite deserve it, but today- it’s a 5. 5 Boolean: true
One of those life changing canon albums of my life when I was a teen
Rate: 9.5/10.
Wow, great album!
This was a formative album for me. I listen to it some what regularly and I just love it. I think the thing I like so much about it is the drum hooks, there’s so much creative stuff happening it just sucks me in. Can’t get enough of this album.
One of the best albums of the 2000s! Each song is a masterpiece!
Modern classic. Great lyrics that sum up living in the mid 2000s.
Wish they made music like their first couple albums. This one being the best. And a great one at that.
Alex Turner has a wonderful voice
Really really awesome. Glad I could finally check this one out. I'll be listening to this again quite a bit.
Loved this album. I surprisingly didn't recognize any songs but I thoroughly enjoyed each one.
Absolute classic. Perfect album.
This might be on my top 5 bands of all time and just don't know it yet. Have to dig into their catalog more. But, every album we gotta by Arctic Monkeys has been amazing.
They appear to be quite popular...
Every song is excellent!
A classic as far as I'm concerned. A hugely important album with regards getting me into punk/punk adjacent music, owing to its ramshackle, chaotic instrumentation and sneering, John Lydon-esque energy; where the quintessentially British self-deprecating wit underlining the whole thing really did (and does) appeal to me. You were one of the cool kids if you liked these lads in high school.
mi. infancia basicamente
An all-time favourite of mine.
Loved this album since it came out, my favourite song is probably from the Ritz to the rubble, great chord progression. I love how raw and sloppy it is especially with the dry as a bone guitar tones, a true classic that'll always be fun. Oh, and, YORKSHIRE!
No soy objetiva con Arctic Monkeys, 10/10 ¡Adoro!
The best concept album ever made. The lyrics are exquisite, documenting Northern England living as a young person at the turn of the milenium. The progressions and riffs are beautiful, and fierce. Not a bad track on the album, an easy 5.
I don’t know what you were like when you were 19, I was a bellend. I had no drive, no real ambition and just kind of frittered my time away. Alex Turner wrote this when he was 19, he wrote this indie kitchen sink drama which more or less revolutionised British music in one fell swoop. He’d go onto do better but this really is jaw dropping stuff. Danceable, musically complex and lyrically sophisticated. 20 years on it still astounds, THE great debut? Possibly, A great debut absolutely
5/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/arctic-monkeys/whatever-people-say-i-am-thats-what-im-not/ Absolutely no notes, allround great. Extremely formative for my musical taste back in the days. A Certain Romance is still an all-time song.
I can't think of many better debut albums than this. Absolutely exploded when it came out, and still so fresh today. I've got many good memories walking to these tunes on my iPod. Phenomenal and raw and brilliant.
now i want a cigarette
increíble
I've heard it before and liked it but wow it hit the bullseye today. Maybe the best rock record of the 00s? Solidly brilliant all the way through.
Love this record.
An absolutely classic AM album with wall-to-wall brilliant tracks. Layered and genre bending, this is the Arctic Monkeys at their prime. It's lyrically clever, with beats that keep you on your toes and plenty of songs to nod your head to. Could listen to this album over and over again.
I LUVVVVV YOU BABY ALEX TURNER AND MATT HELDERS I LUV THIS ALBUM ONE OF MY FAVS EVER
1. The View From The Afternoon - Love the storytelling in this one. Great start to the album. 2. I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor - Absolute banger. Always teleports me back to festival after parties. 3. Fake Tales Of San Francisco - The bouncy guitar riff gets me everytime. 4. Dancing Shoes - Feels like the younger brother of I Bet [...]. Not as good, but still an enjoyable listen. 5. You Probably Couldn’t See For The Lights But You Were Staring Straight At Me - Feels like a song you would hear a small band playing at some obscure dive bar. 6. Still Take You Home - Maybe my least favorite, but still way above average. 7. Riot Van - This song makes me want to lay in the sun with a cold beer and a ciggy. 8. Red Lights Indicates Doors Are Secured - Again, banger guitar riff. 9. Mardy Bum - On par to Riot Van to me. Perhaps my favourites together. 10. Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong But... - Actually gives me vampire vibes in the best way. 11. When The Sun Goes Down - Never gets old. Lyrics are perfect. 12. From The Ritz To The Rubble - Classic. 13. A Certain Romance - A mellow closing of the album. Overall: Love this album and always will. Feels like the epitome of a festival in summer to me. No skips. 5/5.
11/10
idk im in the mood for this rn
Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not is the sound of a band kicking the door down and demanding attention. From the raw garage rock energy of “The View From the Afternoon” and the explosive punk rush of “I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor,” Arctic Monkeys arrive fully formed, channeling the chaos and excitement of mid-2000s youth culture with sharp wit and relentless energy. As a fan of later albums like AM, it’s fascinating hearing their origins here — louder, scrappier, and completely unfiltered. What makes the album stand out is its range. Songs like “Fake Tales from San Francisco” and “Dancing Shoes” bring in funky grooves and new wave influences, while tracks like “You Probably Couldn’t See for the Lights…” and “Still Take You Home” lean fully into that rowdy English punk sound, recalling bands like The Libertines and The Clash without ever feeling derivative. There’s fuzz, swagger, and a sense that the band is constantly on the verge of falling apart in the best possible way. It’s the kind of raw, distorted rock record that feels increasingly rare today. The slower moments hit just as hard. “Riot Van” and especially “Mardy Bum” show off Alex Turner’s storytelling and lyrical charm, giving the album room to breathe before charging back into tracks like “Perhaps Vampires Is a Bit Strong But…” and “When the Sun Goes Down.” By the time “A Certain Romance” closes things out, the album has captured the thrill of nights spent bouncing between clubs, chasing noise, excitement, and a sense of belonging. It’s a front-to-back thrill ride with no skips — every song feels distinct, alive, and essential. Definitely an album worth revisiting again and again. 9/10
I've never actually listened to the lyrics before, and am impressed by the incongruousness of the music (very aggressive, go get it) with the 'I can't peel myself off the wall to go say hello to a woman' lyrics. Social anxiety in musical form. Excellent.
Awesome and edgy album that blurs the lines between punk and hard rock. A keeper.
Banger, the riffs combined with the voice are just fuckin awesome.
This was a quality album. The band’s musicality is evident.
9/10
First Listen: Not my first listen, but first listen in a while. The album bursts open the door with The View From The Afternoon. The band plays frantic, whiplashing the listener from section to section. IBYLGOTD keeps the energy high with - wait for it - danceable grooves. The songs are messy in the best way possible. I don't understand how Arctic Monkeys can go making this album to the sludge they've put out over the past decade and a half. I love the tom and bass interplay in Dancing Shoes. Still Take You Home wakes you right up. The whole album has been high energy to this point, which sometimes can be tough to parse song from song for me, but the fresh riffs and Alex's storytelling keeps each song unique. That being said, Riot Van is a nice breather. Holy did Cage The Elphant base their entire sound on this song. Red Light's groove has massive swagger. The bass and guitar lines play nice together. I love how, similarly to what Illmatic was to Nas and New York, this album feels like chatting up a British native. I think I sang Mardy Bum with my first band. Instant nostalgia hit. I love the distorted vocal sound on Vampires. I forgot about the breakdown. That's sick. Oh the stop is nice. Banger. Oh my god the riff in WTSGD is so addictive. Love the story painted here. This album gets better the further you get in. A Certain Romance is a nice closer. The song takes you on a journey. OVERALL: Who killed the Arctic Monkeys and replaced them with skin walkers raised on lean? 9.5/10 T3: Mardy Bum, WTSGD, Vampire
What a time to release a debut. I think the rise of social media at that point, the importance of indie really worked in their favour... In light of that, fucking amazing album. Epic, sure it's a bit samesey, but I still think it captures such a great sounds and moment in musical time.
IT'S MY THE MOST FAVOURITE ALBUM EVERRRRRR
NICE album, not a 5 star but a 4.5
Fuck, I love Arctic Monkeys. I’m not sure I would give any of their albums less than a five (but Humbug is the best). I’m too tired (and lazy) to write a full-length review so here’s an article I wrote for the album’s 20 year anniversary: https://open.substack.com/pub/channelwav/p/whatever-people-say-i-am-thats-what?r=1iy2fn&utm_medium=ios
Banger of an album.
Loved it.
I knew this would be good, but did not expect it to be this good lol. One of the best and the genre, reminds me of one of the better strokes, adjacent band
havent listened through since maybe highschool. god damn what a record. i like hearing it described as a concept album about trying to get laid in a sheffield nightclub, and apparently that energy's terrific, really makes you feel like a waifish british lad. i love Mardy Bum, but A Certain Romance is such a stellar closer
Rating: 9/10 Certified nostalgia classic. One of the only albums I didn't have to stream cause I have that shit in my iTunes library. The first band I ever saw perform live, I was even so hype to see them as an opener. The Arctic Monkeys debut is probably my favorite of theirs and still one of their best. Alex Turner's songwriting and his vocals are already on point in the songs, they have an anthemic high energy, great guitar riffs, there's really not a weak song here. Starts strong and ends strong with the first 3/last 3 songs, with their best hits, and the fantastic closer A Certain Romance. This genre of music doesn't do too much for me like it used to but this one has aged really well for me.
I forgot how good this album is. I haven’t listened in a long time. Really fun. Fast. Never lets up.
Well! I knew some later Arctic Monkeys hits but not this album. I'm struck by how punk it is - in a good way. (The mixes are really comfortable and effective!) I even like the videos, eg showing the band just playing the song, or syncing live footage from shows to the recording. I like that this is a coherent album about Saturday night to Sunday morning, with a strong sense of people and place (in best punk traditions). The songwriting is solid (particularly lyrics), the songs have great variety, the album doesn't pall at all as it powers on through. It's at least Pretty Wonderful, 9/10.
I hadn't listened to this record for a long time. I love AM and some of their other stuff, but I didn't really get into this quite the same way. I'd seen them live in 2014 and honestly have very little memory of the show, though I recall enjoying it at the time. So I was a bit uncertain when this came up today. And after listening, I now know there should not have been any uncertainty at all. This was a very fun album, and quite impressive for a debut. They sounded so self-assured given that, and had no trouble mixing up genres and making songs as they wished, with little surprises in almost every track. When I have a smile on my face while listening, it's my clue that this is a special record. Standouts were I Bet You Look Good, Fake Tales of San Francisco, Red Light, Mardy Bum, Perhaps Vampires, And A Certain Romance. As I was listening I wasn't certain if this would be a four or five star rating. As I'm now writing about the album I am certain what it is.
I love the monkey men. :)
This was a fun one! I know some of the more popular AM songs but never listened to a full album. I might have to check out some more.
it's antifa summer.
Put on your Dancing Shoes and hop in the Riot Van and crank this album up. Don’t be a Mardy Bum.
One of the best albums so far
I saved 7 songs. VP bought this album for me ages ago. I guess its my own fault for not listening to this earlier. Early Arctic Monkeys and it shows. Super energetic, super rocky. Angsty songs about clubbing in the UK back in the 2000s. Amazing. My favorite: When the songs goes down
Absolute bangers, no skips
banger after banger but why is adam sandler on the cover
Amazing album. Classic Arctic Monkeys
I LUVVV thiss album. ARCTIC MONKEYSSS I LUVV THEMM
Absolute classic, starting off with a bang
This passed me by when it first came out. I'm glad to have listened to it now. Modern northern poetry.
Scummy man
What a debut
ABSOLUTE BANGER AFTER BANGER 🤘 F IT. ITS A 5/5
It's so good
Cool as shit
Simplemente les amo
9/10 but the site doesnt allow half stars. that was a cool listen, but there was a nagging feeling that this was a bit generic but yeah. Cool album overall. also british as hell, this thing oozes british vibes.
First album I ever bought. Stand-out lyrics where the youthful honesty shines through. Easy to see the early influence of John Cooper Clarke. Also half the songs are direct and unmitigated bangers. Favourite song (on any album): I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor
This is, OF COURSE, a 5. No notes.
Brilliant, especially the bass.
The lyrics are insightful and witty. Superficially this seems like another album taking advantage of the high dynamic range possible with digital technology. Maybe, but this bears a second or third listen to get beyond the surface. When the sun goes paints a vivid picture of the roles involved in prostitution, they has a go at itself by referencing Roxanne, the song by the Police. The singer takes you where a mind would go and articulates thoughts beautifully. The whole experience is healing. What art should be. And you can dance to it.
It’s so good. I loved this album when it was released and it still holds up.
This is probably closer to 4.5 but I’m rounding up because of how hilariously fun it is. The bands best work by a country mile.
god i love this album
I loved this album! they are so specific that these songs feel truly lived in and personal to an extent that I find difficult to come by. It sucks I only listened to this now, I missed out on all the teenage angst this album could've given me. Unfortunately next year I am 20... so my life is practically over. Fav Song: Still Take You Home Least Fav: You Probably Couldn't See for the Lights but You Were Staring Straight At Me
I was 13 again. I know belive this album shape the sound of a generation and I was there drinking cheap vodka in orange soda. God bless.
Love this album. So fantastic for a debut album. Such a fresh sound. The first three tracks are so hard to get through because you just want to repeat them ad nauseum. Glad it was included in the 1001.
Five stars for two reasons. 1) It’s brilliant, everything rock music should be, bright, exciting, just different enough from went before to be interesting but not too different to not be accessible 2) I see a lot of tossers giving it one star. Really? One star is for an album that’s so bad that you see no merit in it whatsoever, not for ‘I’m a snob and this isn’t Revolver so I hate it’, it’s not Amazon in 2006, there are other options than one star or 5.
Its been a while since I listened to this album (or even thought about this band) and I forgot how many bops this album has! The energy starts right from the word go and rarely lets up. If I could knit pick something negative its that some of the songs towards the back end tend to blend together, however this doesn't take away just how good this album is. The wiki blurb says this is considered one of the best debut albums ever and I think it deserves that moniker. 4.5/5 rounded up to a 5
This album was like a breath of fresh Northern air when it came out! The good thing with it being on the list is it made listen to the whole album and not cherry pick my favourites, superb.
I absolutely love Arctic Monkeys and their debut is one of their strongest albums. There is not a bad song on here. I first got into Arctic Monkeys because they were very popular on Tumblr back in the day, so I was like why not I'll try them out. I downloaded You Probably Couldn't See For the Lights But You Were Staring Straight At Me off a free music download app back when my phone could hold like 30 songs total at a time. The song immediately hooked my teenage self and I became obsessed with Arctic Monkeys. I had heard all the songs off this album many times, but this was actually the first time I gave the album a full listen and it made me realize just how strong the tracklist is. This was the Arctic Monkeys at their heaviest and it still holds up great today. Favorite Track - A Certain Romance Least Favorite Track - Dancing Shoes ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
hell yeah. one of my fav albums
I've listened to this one before! It's so good.
Wow, only knew one song from these guys but this album kicked arse! Definitely adding the Arctic Monkeys to my playlists.

Love this album, is one of my favorite from artic monkeys, i love how much more messy and chaotic it gets compared to their newer stuff

Once again pure nostalgia for me. But this truly is an album of its time, and that's what makes it so perfect. It is exactly the album that speaks of the noughties in the north of England. It's so culturally relevant and brilliant. No skips at all, just pure banger after banger.
Brilliant debut album.
Stil their best effort and in general a modern classic
This was so much fun. What a way to kick off a debut album and what an album; just banger after banger! So glad I was the right age for this to be on regular rotation in my teenage clubbing years. Definitely a must listen! And led me back to Alex Turner’s soundtrack for Submarine which I will truly never tire of.
Amazing. Great energy and clever songwriting.
Well this one is incredible for some spotty teens from Sheffield
I was just about to listen to it actually. Fire
First proper album and first familiar artist. Really loved this, it's going to be my regular. AM rules fr.
ngl when these guys were all over the radio in the mid 00s i was sick to bastard death of em. but i was a fuckin idiot cos this whips. i'd never realised their sound back then was like, dance punk? the lyrics often tend towards whining about small grievances like getting kicked out a bar and cops harassing kids in the park but honestly it paints a good picture of what life was like at the time in the north and midlands. lookin back now.... i kinda was those kids in the park lmao this album caught me off guard right from the start. "the view from the afternoon" goes in swinging with its aggressive drums and punchy guitars for an instant favourite and the energy keeps up throughout the whole first half, only calming down for a breather during the third quarter. "perhaps vampires is a bit strong but..." is my favourite, with its much darker feel, distorted vocals and duelling guitars, but the fun mishmash of punk subgenres in "still take you home" brings it real close and "from the ritz to the rubble" deserves a shoutout just for rhyming "scary un" with "totalitarian". the energy in the back half never quite gets back up to where it started but there's not a single bad track here. even "when the sun goes down" and "i bet you look good on the dancefloor", which i'd heard so much when this came out that i was tired of em for years, are, as it turns out, fuckin great actually. its bangers cover to cover. from the second it ended i was already up to jump back in for a second listen. i really enjoyed this one. music to crack a few tins with the lads in the back yard to before giving ur mate a peck on the lips and hitting him over the back with a folding chair. good stuff.
Awesome debut album and an instant classic. This album is famous for using the Internet to drum up hype and especially for 2006 it's well deserved hype. Dancing Shoes is probably my favorite track but every one on here is a great time.
I already know and love this album, but I’m excited to listen again! It’s a total banger. Perfect album for sure, forgot how good it is all the way through!
I discovered Arctic Monkeys a few years ago. Liked em so much I bought the AM record on vinyl. But apart from that album I haven't really explored the rest of what they got to offer. This Debut album from them might even be better than AM. I know I disliked "post-punk" but this is described as "post-punk revival" Almost like they realized it sucked and needed to get back to guitar centric music. It's good. Very good. I will be seeking the Vinyl of this one too if it exists.
Unpredictably aggressive and forcefully executed
A classic
4.5
One of the greatest debuts of all time, and one of my top three. The craftsmanship and dedication and skill shown on this album was unreal. To think these were just normal guys trying this for the first time blows my mind. Bands could only ever dream of producing something this incredible in their entire lifetime, let alone their very first try
Honestly, this was a great indie rock album. For whatever reason I never really listened to the Arctic Monkeys except for their singles and well known songs, which I did enjoy, but every song on this album was just a great little 3 minute jam with no misses. They have a ton of listeners on Spotify and after listening to this album, I definitely know why. I will be digging into their other albums to see what other good music they have made.
It really was a fantastic debut. The hype around them was unreal at the time, but it was at least pretty justifiable. The album itself is remarkably well produced. Nothing is getting lost in the mix and it all sounds great. The lyrics spoke to the youth at the time and reminds me so much of university life. Whilst it can't hit the heights of The Libertines' debut, the fact that it's even in the same conversation is remarkable.
Solid debut album. Seen them live a couple of times during their earlier gigs. So many of their iconic songs on one album. The kind of album you can just keep turning over time after time.

Imagine having this much hype prior to your record coming out and then you surpass it. A modern classic (even though it’s now - oof - 20 years old!). As thrilling as it was when it was released, brilliantly clever lyrics and not a bad track on it. Amazing.
Brilliant album. Audacious, clever and filled with great tunes. The Arctic Monkeys were just what the music scene needed in 2006.
Genre revivalism is often perceived in a controversial way: some see it as a breath of fresh air to the overuse of modern trends or a proof of lack of originality. The 2000s garage revival proved it's way as a movement that, while taking total inspiration from the 60s rock n' roll aesthetic, managed to bring sonically unique groups, whose variety of influences don't just serve as a knock-off of past gimmicks, but the birth of a new and interesting sound On that regard, AM's debut managed to be a punch in the face of the pessimists that keep screaming "rock is dead" despite not giving a chance to the "inexperienced" indie kids. "I Bet That You Looked Good on the Dancefloor" managed to become an anthem fueled with glamorous elegance and raw punkish attitude: the album as a whole manages to unite the best elements of several eras and become timeless masterpieces like the skanky "View from the Afternoon", almost horror-punk in "Sun Goes Down" and the soft but uplifting "Mardy Bum". Personally, I view these guys as the latest rock act to achieve major success, which is not exactly a goal for indie rockers, but it's good enough to show that rock n' roll is still relevant and most definetely not dead
I get why there's so many people who are insufferable about this band. This is a no skip album! 9/10
Nostalgia central, makes me think of the first gig I went to with my dad, kfc on the way, great memories
A defining album of my childhood and forever a classic
Class album of the time and still sounds brilliant today.
I did in fact put on my dancing shoes.
Anticipation has the habit to set you up. Not with this high octane absolute worldie of a record tho. This was THE album for Brits, and has aged like fine wine. Banger after banger, vivid social commentary, 13 wildly visceral, frantic & varied but thematically linked tunes, all in 40 minutes Change my mind, but Arctic Monkeys were the last big rock band, coming out of the ashes after Pete Doherty went off the rails, and a lot of trust was put on them to spearhead the scene for years to come. & they did for a while. But rock has since fizzled and is honestly more of a fringe genre as the charts are more saturated with pop & hip hop. Arctic Monkeys do their own thing now, have done for a while, and this pissed off those that put their faith in them. But those first 2 albums? Perfection. Them headling Glasto for the first time was the last big cultural moment in rock music, other than those fueled by nostalgia. 9.5 / 10 Best track/s: A Certain Romance, From the Ritz, Fake Tales, Still Take You Home, Dancefloor Better albums by Arctic Monkeys: Favourite Worst Nightmare, Humbug
The accent is great and the tracks still stand up today. Not quite a perfect album but a hell of a debut record. Pity they lost the rawness and the accent over time. 4.5/5. Raising to 5.
iconic
Love it. Today´s bir- I mean, monkey: An Artic one.
Note : 5 À réécouter : Oui
la mejor era de los artic
Awesome, upbeat, will relisten
Perfect album to do any art or craft while listening.
Incredible album. Remember it coming out. Was to indie for me at the time but was impossible to avoid. Absolute stunner.
My first 5 star. Banger after banger. Brings me back to my reckless youth. Drinking frosty jacks down the beach and hiding tinnies behind our backs when the police come down with a flashlight hehehe. When The Sun Goes Down might be Arctic Monkeys best song. A Certain Romance also is so anthemic and holds a special place in my heart.
Great album, even after 20yrs! 9/13 songs liked
this is the unknown boxer coming out and just fucking flooring the champ in the first round. So much energy, joy, and even that early on, great hints of what a talent Alex Turner would turn into w/r/t songwriting. ☆☆☆☆☆
Early 2000s nostalgia. Classic brit rock album. 3ish bangers, rest of album is seamless and easy to listen to.
Listened Before?: YES Pros: I. LOVE. THIS. ALBUM. I've loved this album for 10+ years, back when I discovered it on Tumblr in my childhood bedroom. Pre-AM Arctic Monkeys is just so classic, so wonderful. For being a 20 year old debut album, this still holds up. It is seriously so awesome. Arctic Monkeys forever. Cons: NONE! I wish it was longer! Songs Added to Playlist: The entire album. My fav is always I Bet You Look Good on The Dancefloor though.
Such a fun and energetic album! One of their best.
Happy memories
Favoritlåtar: I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor, Fake Tales Of San Francisco, When The Sun Goes Down, Mardy Bum. Minst favorit låtar: Riot Van
Simply put one of the best debut records of all time. They haven't made anything even half as good since. Like yeah they are obviously trying to be The Strokes but it has enough charm that they stand apart from everyone else trying to do the same thing. Dancing shoes/5
awesome choice! added to my fav ones!
One of the most iconic indie debut albums. Love the raw guitar sounds/parts. Alex’s lyrics are complex, impressive how he sings and plays guitar parts at the same time. Due to the high word density the subject matter is often lost while listening to the song. Requires multiple listens. Favorite song: From the Ritz to the Rubble Least favorite song: Mardy Bum Rating: 9/10
OUI MONSIEUR, ÇA JE VEUX TOUJOURS TOUS MES JOURS
Świetne, po prostu świetne. Energiczne, aż chce się śpiewać i tańczyć. Wpada w ucho i ma ciekawe teksty. 5/5
Was never familiar with Arctic Monkey fully (because I don't like their music). First Listen, Amazing start to this 1001 Albums list project. This album would've been an album I would have NEVER TOUCHED if I hadn't started this project. That's a scary thought. Because this album has the exact energy I look for music (punk rock and british rock I think?). Sure, not every track has something I care for but this album has provided tracks that are MUST HAVE SONGS for personal playlists. The drums and guitar riffs are fucking amazing and addicting. There are tracks that I listen to almost everyday! Highlight of the album, Still Take Your Home. Represents the exact energy I love about this album. When The Sun Goes Down is a very close second; represents that addicting nature to the album that made me love it so much. I'll be continuing to listen to this album for years and years without getting sick of it...unlike the albums that followed. There will never be another Arctic Monkeys album like this again. :( Overall, Arctic Monkeys were born here and died here. T3: Still Take Your Home, When The Sun Goes Down, I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor
I must admit that I’ve often overlooked the Arctic Monkeys. But hearing this debut, it’s clear what their instant appeal was. This is post-punk guitar rock paired with some real songwriting. It feels gritty and honest. The album cover reminds me of the photo on the front of the book “Among the Thugs”—it creates a filter that you hear the whole album through.
Very very good. A lot of fun
Contender for best album ever.
I love this band and I love this album, can’t believe it’s been 20 years
Now to the subject matter, the album starts with a simple two note riff that immediately grabs your attention. This captures Arctic Monkeys perfectly: Clever, attention grabbing music, without too much fanciness. The album has some killer songs, and the performance on all instruments are top notch. This is a hesitant 5 since not everything is in the same calibre: it's not an album I'm satisfied with from start to finish, but rather, one where I'm waiting for the gems. Typically this means a 4, but the gems are so strong and the musicianship is clearly there that it feels wrong to punish them for a few meh songs.
I listened to this so many times in high school. Now the songs pop up individually when I put my liked songs on shuffle, but this was my first time listening to the whole thing through in over a decade. It holds up. A danceable alt rock album with consistently solid songs. AM got much more hype but I will stand by the fact that this is the superior arctic monkeys album
Really great album - sort of a mashup of grunge, Alt rock, punk, garage rock.
This album has such a particular sound. Everything from the songwriting to the production, so props to the whole process. The vocal performance sits in perfectly with the instrumental vibe, and the whole thing really shines. It really engages my mind and is easy to listen to, and the performances are really well done. They definitely lean into a handful of sounds that they are really good at, and this does make it extremely consistent almost to a fault, which could be a negative, but that bank of tones is a really good so that doesn't bring it down much at all. A Certain Romance is just an unbelievable closer. Great album. 4.7/5
Excellent album avec que des bangers
Trop facile à noter Ça me rappelle le lycée J’adore !
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
timeless classic, takes me back to school days

Haven’t revisited this one in a long time. I wanted to say “it hasn’t held up” or “they were never good”. I can’t say either of those things. Although they would go on to show us how it feels to drive a Ford F-150, this album is still really great and absolutely holds up. “British”, but good.
Ok we a bit back, could be working on a 4+ here if this stays this fun. So many songs on this one that I very much love. So much more ruckus than I remember lol hell yeah.. Fuck it, 5. This shit so awesome and some of my favorites.
Despite them being from my home town of Sheffield, I've never really paid that much attention to Arctic Monkeys. If this album is anything to go by, maybe I should start. It's got a bit of a post-punk, grungy, indie rock vibe going on that I can really get behind, and the songs themselves are gritty observations of what youth culture was like back when the album first hit the charts. Yeah, I definitely came to this party late, but now I'm here I think I may hang around for a while. A full-bore five out of five.
01) The View from the Afternoon - 9,0 02) I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor - 10,0 03) Fake Tales of San Francisco - 9,0 04) Dancing Shoes - 9,0 05) You Probably Couldn't See for the Lights but You Were Staring Straight at Me - 8,5 06) Still Take You Home - 8,5 07) Riot Van - 9,5 08) Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured - 9,0 09) Mardy Bum - 9,0 10) Perhaps Vampires Is a Bit Strong But... - 8,5 11) When the Sun Goes Down - 10,0 12) From the Ritz to the Rubble - 9,5 13) A Certain Romance - 9,5 TOTAL: 9,15 (92/100) Current ranking: 48/803
NOSTALGIA! Me and my middle school friends started our first band to play these songs, so I can't even pretend to be even a little bit objective. I still think this is a banging, no-skip album<3
Simply great.
Every song has a core memory attached to it from my late teens. I said it's Brookvale mate via Laurel Drive please
Best British debut album of all time. Memories of hearing Fake Tales in the Rescue Rooms in Nottingham with my sister and brother in law, thinking they were a bit old (they were 33 😭). Still Take You Home, Riot Van, and A Certain Romance all perfect. Suck it Gary.
Banger after banger
banger after banger
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE
This was really good, like I’d listen to this album again good. It’s like so warming with his vocals and chill guitar playing.
I’ve always liked this album
Fast, energetic tunes about the grim underbelly of grey drab concrete British living. I like it, but then it's a bit nostalgic for me too. Faves: The View From The Afternoon, I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor, Dancing Shoes, When The Sun Goes Down
THIS is what i hear when i someone mentions arctic monkeys. a certain romance is the song of all time.
It's amazing how much better they are in studio vs live. Live is just a wall of sound, you lose so much of the feeling of the songs. Great album
Noice album
Love this album and Arctic Monkeys. It was a great debut and really brought more attention to British music in the mid 2000s. It's so very British. It's what I want to call 'indie dance punk' and is super fun and takes me back to high school when this came out. Really like the Vampire song on this listen, can't think of the title.
Would love to make a record like this
Legends. No notes.
Loved this. So high energy and catchy. Feels like a great representation of the 00's fast paced alt/indie rock genre. stand out songs: - I bet you look good on the dancefloor - Dancing Shoes - When the Sun Goes Down - A Certain Romance
100% Amazing album! So glad to finally have an album that I really love here
Very close to a perfect album, so many hits, great energy. Will come back to it for sure.
Love!
Interesting to hear their early work and see how much their sound matured over time. Listened while driving to teach at Olene Walker
Overall: 10/10 There's something special about this album. The band's energy oozes out of this thing. I love the guitar work, it's so much fun to listen to these riffs, and while the solos are simple, they're great. Alex Turner also has the best voice for this type of music. One of the best albums of the 2000s in my opinion. Fav Song: Fake Tales of San Francisco
Just perfect. This album brings back memories of its first listen and I can still remember the running order of the tracks.
One of the best debut albums ever made. So raw and real. Using British language and phrases makes the lyrics very relatable. Perfect album, no skips and will always be a favourite
this just has so much energy and youth, such good lyrics that really give a picture of british culture and life, this album was a soundtrack to my COVID lockdown, i loved this, amazing album to return to.
the second best band to ever come out of sheffield
What a debut! It's hard to believe a nineteen-year-old could write lyrics this good.
already listened to it before but its such a fucking classic
Been a fan of Arctic Monkeys since before they were signed. They used to put up mp3s for free on their own website, many of which were re-recorded for this debut album. Eventually they matured a bit, and they're still great, but personally I love the early, snotty kids from this era.
Nostalgia bias for sure but hell yeah
One of my favourite albums ever. Wonderfully witty whilst being very blunt at the same time. I adore Arctic Monkeys, and in my eyes they can do no wrong. Their musical journey since the release of this record has been a joy to follow. I was 14 when this came out, before I was of drinking age, so on first listen I think I must have appreciated the music more than the concept. As soon as I started going out drinking with my friends, this record took on a whole new meaning for me. Best band ever. Best album ever? Maybe!
great album. need to listen to more
I am used to listening to rock music so not a lot on this album surprises me — I like how easy and memorable the riffs are and tried to play them on my guitar several times (it is my first time listening to this album btw)
alex turner save me
Mis canciones preferidas fueron a certain romance, mardy bum, still take u home, dancing shoes y on the dancefloor💃
An absolute classic end to end. Full of bangers and representative of the scene at the time. Timeless
Excelente álbum, do começo ao fim. Acabou tão rápido pois eu estava curtindo bastante a vibe.
Hahaha what a way to start. I already live this album but was nice to give it a full listen again start to finish to appreciate its greatness.
What Are All These Long Song Names, It's Like North English Youth Culture Set to American Rock & Songwriting Is Straightforward... I Love The Drummer He Makes Me Want to Dance/Bob My Head
Outstanding debut album. Still a joy to listen,.not a weak song on it but also has some absolute classics.
Absolute classic, love the lyrics especially. Riot van is hilarious.
Incredible album, one of their best
When I started my vinyl collection a couple of years ago. This was among the first five albums I bought. Is it any surprise this scores any lower than he full marks? 5/5
Utter genius
Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not was nothing like what i was expecting it to be. I'm not super well versed in the Arctic Monkeys, I of course know their name and know that my 16-year-old sister likes them but i don't really remember what any of their songs sound like so i was expecting this to be sort of a soft-rock album. However, what i got was an incredibly British punkish album with quite a bit of a rebellious spirit and that is what i love so much about this album. It has that aforementioned rebellious spirit with plenty of great guitars, fun melodies and some pretty good lyrics for songs with such strange titles. I never would have expected this to be this good but it certainly was a really fun time. Best Song: Still Take You Home Worst Song: Riot Van
fun, cohesive, dare I say masterpiece
Does It Offend You, Yeah!).
I LOVE THIS ALBUM, THE PURE ENERGY AND BRITISH TEEN EXPERIENC3 IS PEAK ONG
Awwwwww hell yessssss This is already one of my favorite albums of all time. I can’t believe this is a debut album.
saved 13/13 songs the base ahhhhhhhhhh
This is possibly in my top 10 albums of all time, so raw, and meaningful at the time, “A certain romance” is an all time favourite- Alex Turner at his best - both lyrically and poetic - masterpiece 🤩
Really makes me think of my first gig with my dad and brother, good memories.
A Modern Masterpiece
Every track’s a banger, they never bettered this!
Fantastic debut.
If you give me my fav album from my teen, you get 5 stars.
I went out of my way to not get into these at the time...no idea why as i love the music and the lyrics are the right amount of punchy and funny
Geweldig album.
One of my top albums
10/10 heard it a million times
Bloody brilliant rock
Brillant lyrics and some banging tunes to boot
Sit down. Crack a beer. And get schooled in songwriting by Alex Turner. Is there anyone else in indie (or even outside the songer/songwriter genre) who can engage you so totally in the lyrics that the music, as good as it is, is almost forgotten. Genius.
Bottled youth
10/10 no skip album Consistent energy from start to finish and when the energy does drop (pretty much Riot Van) it’s very much welcomed I wish when I was 18 I could’ve written these songs Also deffo gets extra points for having Steve Bracknell on the cover
