luv this

Some great tunes here.

When this came out I thought I was too cool for mainstream music so didn’t listen to much of Arctic Monkeys but every song of there’s I heard was a banger so I don’t really know what I was thinking. This album is phenomenal though. Proper hypes me up, want to get drunk and rowdy with this as the soundtrack.

good album. Favs: Perhaps vampires is a bit harsh Fake tales of San Francisco From the Ritz to the rubble

I was completely obsessed with this album when it came out. I was in college, and at my major university in the southeast United States I was the only person I knew who listened to it. I think it’s one of the best debut albums by any rock band in history. From the brilliant opener to the end, it just uses with swagger, great playing, and awesome stories from young adulthood in Britain.

Yeah it's a banger of an album. Love the rawness of it and the "don't-give-a-wankers-bum" (Is that what the Brits say?) attitude! 9/10

how my dad must've felt in 2006 with a 5 yr old and my mom not loving him as much anymore. 10/10, im glad they got divorced, thank you maybe a little to the Arctic Monkeys.. I can imagine him listening. total stoner dad rock. felt the vibes while getting my life together as it falls apart

My favorite Arctic Monkeys album. One of my favorite albums of all time. Basically the soundtrack of my 20s.

Somehow I have never listened to this album in my life, even though I like Arctic Monkeys from Humbug onwards. And I don't even know why is that, maybe I just assumed that the whole record will be filled with "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor"? Truth be told, there is only one banger like this on the album, but it's a really solid start to a career. I had a lot of fun listening to it, and even though it's not the greatest rock album in the world, it's good enough for the weak 5.

My all-time favourite

Their second best after tbhc

Probably one of the most iconic indie albums ever, although in my opinion AM takes the cake for /most/ iconic. This album is fantastic. I was worried going into this as I hadn't listened to it in a very very long time, and didn't know if I'd hold it in as high of a regard - but every song here stands on it's own flawlessly. You can tell what the songs are on it that are 'standouts' by stream numbers, like IBYLGOTD, Mardy Bum, WTSGD. This is a flawless execution of what British indie should sound like, that became the fastest selling album by a band in UK and changed the way music is listened to and distributed forever (as they were one of the first bands ever to release their album online). This album is extremely consequential, so I think most reviews are either going to be a 'love it' or a 'hate it' mentality, and I'm firm on the side of the former.

充满了激情和活力的声音

I have heard Arctic Monkeys before but not this album. I was surprised that I liked it so much. It has great dynamics and characteristics Arctic Monkey's vocals. Tempo feels faster than on "AM" for most of the time.

I must confess to dismissing the Arctic Monkeys as just another indie band. This album is full of witty lyrics and some wonderful guitar playing. Top marks from me.

all-time fav

Behind the snarky banter, it’s a lovingly nostalgic portrait of a night out in a Northern town. The police ignore the back-chat they’ve heard a hundred times before, the bouncers secretly want it all to kick off, but instead you slink away and nothing kicks off. It’s a world where everyone knows their place, and the greatest ire is reserved for posers with ideas above their station. ‘You’re not from New York City you’re from Rotherham’ remains one of the funniest lines ever written. Alex Turner is a top-tier lyricist here, and the cherry on the top is he sings like he’s drunk, he’s really inhabiting the role.

This is my favorite Arctic Monkeys album. Witty lyrics, catchy riffs, grooving basslines, it has it all. I've listened to this album a lotin the past compared to most items on this list, and my favorites have always been Mardy Bum and Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured, but everything on this album works. Though the band has changed a lot over the years, this is an album that's easy to come back to.

Probably one of the best debut albums I've ever heard. Starts and ends incredibly strong, with some unfortunately weaker filler in the middle. The drumming in particular on the album is phenomenal, and really aides in keeping every song engaging and easy to dance to. Top tracks: The View From The Afternoon, Mardy Bum, When The Sun Goes Down, A Certain Romance

Rollicking album Explores many punk genres Tackles each deftly

Belter.

A classic Arctic Monkeys album, one of my all time bands here. This album itself has no misses. The stronger of the songs defined this generation of alt rock here and changed it going forward. Great album.

i used to be super into arctic monkeys and i loved this album very much.

The quintessential Mad Lad™️album. Despite being obsessed with this as a teen when it first came out, though, I have to say, I was a bit concerned that transitioning and aging would make me side-eye this album today. Turns out, I had nothing to worry about! And maybe that’s because I’m still just a Hipster Party Girl™️ deep down and this is a true Indie Party Masterpiece™️, but I also think this record is just a masterpiece, flat-out. The lyrics are insightful but also witty and perfectly encapsulate the emotions of being in your late teens. The rhythm section is *so* tight and to this day still inspires a hip shimmy and hands in the air moment from me. And the guitar work is goddamn brilliant, as well as the jittery, stop-start, dynamic-centric songwriting. They’re pulling from a lot of important bands who came before – Pixies, Supergrass, Blur, The Kinks, The White Stripes – but it’s all put into a blender. So while you can taste the flavor of this or that, the end result only enhances the other elements, and the whole thing comes out tasting like nothing else that you’ve ever tasted. And while I think Whatever People Say I Am comes dangerously close to overstaying its welcome (and the band’s sound did get stale for a couple albums after this, at least until AM), this album overall explores enough of a variety of tones, dynamics, and degrees of the band’s sound that, as a self-contained package, it stays enjoyable throughout and never gets boring. If the best thing that ever came out of Britpop was Whatever People Say I Am, then shout out to Britpop. Glad to know this record still bangs.

Brilliant

Hadn't listened to this in ages. Oh boy, what a reminder of the great storytelling and incredible musical assuredness it was to revisit this album 18 years later.

Pure rock genius.

Arctic monkeys always just scratch the sleazeball music itch. This album is fantastic

00s indie rock classic

Longtime favorite.

Loved this! I knew the hits, but kinda stayed away from diving deep with Arctic Monkeys at the time, partly because they weee SO hyped right out the gate. My loss; this was excellent start to finish. Amazing album cohesion from a group of high schoolers. And they’ve held up over time; much respect. Lead singer has amazing charisma and the songwriting is top notch. Maybe a little long but really, not many songs I’d cut.

I have to give this 5 stars. It’s brilliant. As a woman, I find the lyrics pretty difficult to tolerate but I appreciate they were teenage boys when they were written.

My number 1 draft pick for albums to drink 1000 beers to. Alex Turner is overqualified to write songs about going out, getting drunk, and picking up girls but it’s really his lyrics that make the album special. Turner manages to capture the drunken excitement, anxiety, regret, and more than anything the absurdity of it all on songs that would’ve rocked even with the dumbest lyrics possible.

I'll be listening to this again!

I went out and bought this the day it came out when I was 17. I loved the singles but remember thinking the album didn’t offer much more. It was like they’d played all their cards. It’s hard not to cringe at lyrics like “banging tunes and dj sets” now, I don’t think the album has aged well. Having said that I still enjoyed the singles, I feel like AM are my generations oasis. It was a nice trip down memory lane.

amazing

Classic

This is probably the best album of the 2000s. The songs on this album still sound fresh even 18 years later. If I want to show someone older what it means to be young in my generation, I'll show them this album. Plus: A Certain Romance is one of the best songs I've ever heard in my life. The feeling of being inside an old 69 Mustang at 100 miles per hour that this song gives me at its climax is still an indescribable emotion for me.

Y'know, I've never really understood the hype for The Strokes. I've always felt it must be a "you had to be there" sort of thing, and I just wasn't. I was, however, there when the Arctic Monkeys released this album, and I remember really fucking loving it. I hadn't listened in a minute, and I've received one or two albums on this list that haven't held up (Franz Ferdinand's debut, for one), but this one held up. I think it's just what everyone thinks the Strokes are, but is. It's snotty, raw, garage-smash-and-bang. It has some British attitude. All of the songs feel like they could easily just bang the same chords out, but a lot of them transform throughout the song and make for some seriously enjoyable listening. Never really got into many Arctic Monkeys records after this, but this one is solid enough to sustain em. Favorite tracks: "From The Ritz To The Rubble", "You Probably Couldn't See For the Light...", "I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor"

Given the hype around them, it's difficult to see how the Arctic Monkeys ended up living up to this hype. But they did. They have shown themselves to have some more depth with Suck It and See and their last two album releases which play like lounge tunes. But this album is like a punch to the gut. It's frantic mayhem at times and Alex Turner's lyrics are clever as well. This is the sound of hitting up clubs in your early 20's with no idea what you are doing or what you want to be doing. The lyrics don't read as immature though, which is a strength of the album. What I think separates this album from others is the way the songs are constructed. Clearly, they can just thrash and play a 2:30 minute rock song, but they have songs where they change tempos. That's what makes this album so good is they could have taken the easy way out and just played loud rock songs but chose to write Mardy Bum and A Certain Romance, which changes tempo about 3-4 times. I prefer the back half of the album because I find the structure/sound of the songs to be very interesting. It's a confident album from a confident band.

Album 435 of 1001 Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not Rating : 5 / 5 I liked this. A really good debut album. Some good tunes. They were pretty hyped up at the time. Comparisons to The Beatles and Oasis. Don't know that I would go that far. Though this album is one you'd likely want to put on again.

The raw energy of this album is simply unmatched by anything. It's so fun and playful, but also has so much genuinely great social commentary on life in Sheffield and all the affairs that go on in that kind of setting. I have never quite heard anything that manages to be so fun yet with such great commentary all at the same time. The pacing is nothing short of amazing, I love the way that Riot Van changes the tone to something more slow and soft just as you start to think that this all sounds the same.

GOOD BRITISH TUNES an absolute all timer 4.7/5

Best album so far

6. An instant classic

I’ve listened to this album so much and most of their work 10/10.

Amazing album. The lyrics/songwriting are really tight and funny and do a great job of capturing how getting into bars and trying to talk to girls feels like the most important and dramatic thing ever when you’re in your late teens and early 20s, as well as how ridiculous all the drama seems once you’re a little bit removed from it, whether it’s the next morning or a few years down the line. The instrumentals are incredible. Really high energy drumming and guitars grabs you from the first track and doesn’t really let you go until “Riot Van.” I’d list some of my favorite tracks from this part but I‘d just be listing the first six tracks in order. After the halfway point the album switches between more introspective, slower tracks like “Mardy Bum” or “A Certain Romance” and higher energy tracks that match the first half of the album like “From the Ritz to the Rubble.” The album never gets boring. I was obsessed with it in highschool 10+ years ago and it’s still just as good of a listen. Easily the best Arctic Monkeys album and one of the best rock albums of this century so far. Everyone should be issued a copy when they turn 16.

Love this album, got a big smile on my face when I saw it pop up. Mardy Bum all time GOAT track. Don't care that these are basic takes. If you're reading this and this is the first time hearing this album (likely not if you know me personally), I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! This was the first album I learned to play through on the guitar. Sweet debut album from some teens, main singer's accent is so heavily British it actually becomes endearing. I think this is like a 10-streak of albums out of the UK now.

Arctic monkeys are a prime example of a band I’ve decided I can’t stand based entirely on their popularity and fan demographic! Nothing to do with the music. I definitely don’t get the whole buzz around that tosspot. The main bloke. Alex The Twat or whatever he’s called. Heralded as a generational song writer and lyricist - don’t get me wrong, it’s catchy and great but just because he can write a song about taking a taxi in Sheffield doesn’t mean he should be considered ‘relatable’ and categorised with some of the best song writers ever. Anyway, back to this album. I remember it coming out, all the buzz by the radio 1 listeners who think they are alternative so a band with actual instruments is cool. Didnt it sell in like a record time? I remember loving it. So I’ve gone in open minded without arctic monkey prejudice! It’s actually brilliant. Hard hitting, relentless. I really love it. Frustrates me in a way that I know it pretty much word for word and that I can’t help but sing along to it! I don’t know who I am anymore 4.5

Such tasty drumming!!!

Backseat of the school bus, heading to college.

I always thought that I was not an Arctic Monkeys fan because I was so annoyed with "Do I Want to Know" on the radio all the time... I really liked this album! I liked it so much that I listened to it back to back. After listening to this album twice, I decided to listen to their biggest album AM..... which I hated. I don't know why I dislike Arctic Monkeys, but I like this album so much. Maybe it's because I didn't know any of the songs on here, or maybe I'm just a sucker for debut albums. On a 10 point scale I would rank this as a 9. I'm going to round up here and make it a 5 out of 5.

Great 1st album. Love AM

Amazing album, a classic in every way.

My 5 stars for this is partly nostalgia for being 19 and going to nightclubs, I have to admit, but it is clearly a great album. Full of great songs, catchy hooks, cracking indie riffs and wry observational lyrics. Beyond that it's fair to say British rock music was given a kick up the arse around this time.. I like bands like Coldplay and Travis, but mid-00s was a lot more fun when the likes of AMs, Franz Ferdinand and The Libertines hit the big time. This album really captures that moment as well.

This is such a fun album to listen to. The bass riff on Dancing Shoes is so gripping. I have this one on vinyl, and it is in the very regular rotation for me. Great album from a great band. Favorite track: Dancing Shoes

Rating: 10/10 A classic, one of the greatest debut albums of all time. The band mixes indie rock, garage rock, and punk rock with masterful proficiency. The energy on here is absolutely infectious which makes it so fun to listen to from start to finish. The interplay of the instruments is stellar, the guitars and bass oftentimes are not playing the same thing but the synergy between them is fantastic. Lyrically this album is great too, very observational, witty, and humorous while also being relatable. This sounds like a band that spent years perfecting their sound rather than a debut which makes it all the more impressive. Favorite songs: pretty much all of them. Least favorite song: You Probably Couldn't See For The Lights...

Slammming

I've loved this album since I was a teenager, and it's only grown on me since then.

perfect album. no notes.

I just absolutely love the Arctic Monkeys. They get 5 stars always.

The bassline on "A Certain Romance" floored me in 2006, and still does in 2024... Oh, in five years time, will it be "Who the fuck's Arctic Monkeys?".

Makkelijke keuze.

Smashing debut album - I think these four likely lads might do okay for themselves

I’m probably biased because Arctic Monkeys are in my top 3 favorite bands ever, but I think this is very easily one of the best debuts of the 2000s.

This one hell of a debut album.

Don't believe the hype/

Up beat - don’t have to skip any tracks.

I thoroughly enjoyed this album from Arctic Monkeys front to back. Somehow I missed the boat on this band. I have heard some of the hits on some old sports games but never explored their catalogue. The vocals are smooth. The pacing is high without being in your face. Loved it.

Not a bad track on here

One of the best albums in the history of music

This album has so many bangers: The View From The Afternoon; I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor; Dancing Shoes; Still Take You Home; Mardy Bum; Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong But...; When The Sun Goes Down; From The Ritz To The Rubble; A Certain Romance

Social media pushed success. Intelligent and powerful alternative rock.

I was the target demographic for this album. I was third year varsity. At this stage I was deep into the garage rock scene. The Killers were huge and The Kings of Leon were making their presence known. My mate had just come back from the UK and brought a copy of The Streets' A Grand Don't Come For Free. What I mean is I was primed for this album. Even so, when WPSIATWIN was just something else entirely. There was nobody making music that sounded like this, or at least that reached us at the southern end of Africa. It was a revelation. We could identify with the rabble-rousing, drinking and partying on display. As the Arctic Monkeys have matured so have I. I guess what I'm saying is this album is both a significant point in the cultural zeitgeist and a deep dive into nostalgia for me.

Wow! I really liked this! I'm not sure how I missed this band. I bet they would have been fun live before they started playing at huge venues. Great musicians, great lyrics and I love the singer's accent.

YESAEAAHHHHHHHH yeah boi don't mind if i DEWWW

This is it. This is the most enjoyable album of the 2000's The clever and funny lyrics, the incredible speed and hooks, youthful rock&roll and not a song to be skipped. Songs about being denied entry to the club, underage drinking, tarted up girls, boredom and fake tales. These are the incredibly relatable and lived stories of your late teens and twenties. 41 minutes of unpretentious clever fun.

one of my favs has serious bangers o there

i really liked this

This was amazing! I knew it was about British youth nightlife but the development of the thematic concept blew me away. The lyricism is fantastic and being a British 16-year-old male I related to all of this incredibly. I never find myself fully able to connect to their music though: the only other album I’ve heard is Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino and didn’t find it fantastic either. There’s just something slightly off. 9/10.

One of the best debut albums! Fast and portrays a picture of the environment in which the band was around.

One of the best debut albums ever 🙏

Alex Turner's Ma was my Spanish teacher. Yes this is a review

Love it love it love it

the only album ever.

Ofc GAOAT

Garage rock. Un megahit. Venga, vinilo.

To me this is one of the greatest debut albums of all time. Practically every song on here is a plain banger. I may not be a massive fan of where the Arctic Monkeys went or a lot of the culture that surrounds them, especially in this era but boy this is slaps.

Hade kunnat vara tredje medlemmen i Sleaford Mods • På tal om att vilja få ett bra album för en gång skull • Albumnamn som man aldrig kommer ihåg 100% korrekt • The View From The Afternoon - Bra låt • I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor - Bra låt • Det är så mycket ös på allt • Fake Tales Of San Fransisco - Bra låt • Dancing Shoes - Bra låt • You Probably Couldn’t See For The Lights But You Were Staring Straight At Me - Lite skum, långt namn, fortfarande rätt bra? • Still Take You Home - Bra låt • Riot van - Först långsamma låten, lite av en interlude, mysig, vill ändå säga bra låt • Red Lights Indicates Doors Are Secured - Bra låt • Mardy Bum - Bra låt, aldrig varit min favorit dock • Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong But… - Långt solo, men bra fart, bra låt • When The Sun Goes Down - Bra låt, introt har aldrig vart min favorit, resten dock • From The Ritz To The Rubble - Den bästa låten, coolt namn med • A Certain Romance - Bra låt Betyg: Saken med Arctic Monkeys är att de tidiga albumen är bra, mellanalbumen är bra och de senaste är bra => 5/5

Hade nästan satt 5 på alla arctic album

Fantastic album! I love arctic monkeys already!

This album is the pure, distilled essence of mid-2000s indie rock. Sharp, fresh, crisp, cool, iconic. Not a single song that flops, but banger after banger that hits you at high speed. I have been looking for something to criticize, but I have nothing.

Great.

Oh yes. 5 stars.

Loved it. Already one of my favourite bands so a good start!

classic punk rock

A stone cold classic and the perfect entry into this list. This album is hugely of it's time and that is a good thing. It washed away the so called "landfill indie" that proceeded it in the UK. It's birth at the start of file sharing and new ways to disseminate and consume music felt new and genuinely exciting. I moved to Sheffield in 2000 and was firmly ensconced in the music scene when these guys exploded. I didn't get to see them at the Boardwalk, but to have 18 year old boys playing music that spoke of our time and place makes it something personal to me. If you ignore the personal and cultural history and look at the music they generated it would still warrant it's place because the quality of the album speaks for itself. The consistency from track one to the closer is incredible. The lyrics are witty and warm with an excellent injection of snarl. The guitars and driving rhythm section elevate this further. Add a liberal sprinkling of pop hooks and sing along choruses and it demonstrates what the best music can be: the alchemy of putting quality ingredients together to produce something more than the sum of its parts that speaks to people and brings joy. Put this on loud and sing every word and you'll be a better person afterwards.

just rock solid, no filler. a modern classic which played a huge role in my love for the band.

One of the best albums of the 2000s. Just bangers after bangers on here, not a single bad spot. And for a debut too, unreal

YeeeSSESSSSssssSSAZsszsbsjdjdjdjhwjajajahahahahaaaaaaa love love love eternal love a certain romance ded ded ded I bet that you look good on the dance floor! When the sun goes down! Fake tales of San Francisco!! Marry bum!!! And I didn’t even look at the track list yet lollllllllll AGAGAGAFAFAGGAGZAGABBbyaaaaaaasss

never really got into the Arctic Monkeys before but WOW, this is really good! it’s kind of like a slightly pop-y Post-Punk, so like almost new wave but with a lot more freeform ambitious aggression fantastic album - easy 10/10 for me

A debut release that makes a statement about the music, the band, the songwriting that will endure as Arctic Monkeys' sound.

Great confident hard sound. Rocked out to this one. “When the Sun Goes Down” was a late-album highlight, and “A Certain Romance” is a hell of a closer.

Amazing. Love this album

Phenomenal ... you can clearly hear the inspiration from acts of the past as well as the uniqueness that combines to make this album so captivating

Classic

BANGER

A very solid album with a lot of very well made garage rock songs. I enjoyed almost every track, but after listening every thing is kind of sounds the same and not much stands out. Probably closer to a 4, but I am feeling generous

Realized I have always liked a couple Artic Monkeys songs but never sought out more from them. I should have? Really enjoyed this front to back. 9/10

This was a game changing album. Great hits and solid set list.

I love Arctic Monkeys but I have never listened to their debut before. Standout track is Mardy Bum and A certain Romance

Favourite Song: Mardy Bum (and I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor as a default) My first 5/5 and admittedly, comes from a place of nostalgia. Fun, energetic and loud, this album embodies Indies rock and every song is a hit.

Fantastic punk album. The more you listen to it the more you want to listen to it.

I hope my crops produce a good yield

Good from start to finish. Right rhytmn, rough style. Love it!

loveit

Love this album, of course. A classic!

all timer.

Bangers all throughout. lots of fun to work to

OSTIA PUTA VAYA ALBUM 😭😭♥️🔥🥵

loveeeee, arctic monkeys are amazing

Two modern rock classics in a row! This album helped revitalize the waning British indie scene in the mid-2000s, and it does sound pretty British, innit? This album, a collection of energetic guitar rockers, is pretty undeniable and is a big reason why the Monkeys remain one of the largest rock bands touring today. This album wasn't necessarily a favorite of mine for a long time, but it's definitely rising in the ranks as I continue to gain appreciation for the songcraft across this album. Alex Turner's lyrics are phenomenal. I feel this album is going to age very well. So much so, that I'm going to go ahead and give this a full five stars.

Quite good innit

Hello old faithful

Love this album, remember buying it in a massive queue at Sunderland HMV. Last time I recall liking a band involved in that sort of frenzy. Saw them on the NME tour and they were second on the bill, half the crowd left before Maximo park, mad. Lyrics are witty and very northern in a way that I don't think any other band has captured. Much heavier than the imitators that followed too who all seemed to just copy mardy bum, probably because they don't have a drummer anywhere near as good as the AM guy. By far their best album in my opinion, I like AM (sure it'll come up at some point) but this one is just a lot less cool which I'll always prefer.

I had tickets to see them on tour last year, but I had to sell them. Not sure I would have enjoyed it anyway, he sings like a dickhead now. I don't really like Still Take You Home, but the rest of the album consists of 4/5 star songs. Stunning when it came out, holds up well.

This is a great album, I used to listen to this all the time at Uni. It was nice to revist it as I haven't heard it in years. There are hardly any bad songs here. Easy 5 stars. Highlights: The View from the Afternoon I Bet that you Look Good on the Dancefloor Dancing Shoes

Amazing album. Came out in undergrad days and transports me right back to those times, got that uni nostalgia factor. Also got the English regional accents, which I seem to have a thing for. Mardi bum is kinda mine and my wife's song, which just makes me realise how old I am...... Nearly every song here is great. Back when Alex Turners ego wasn't stratospheric. Although I think "AM" is an amazing album too "Riot van" and perhaps "vampires is a bit strong" aside I could probably pick every track as a highlight. Fake tales of Sam Francisco could be my favourite but there are so many One of the bands I really like that I've never managed to see live... Still time. Simple 5

One of the greatest rock albums of all time.

I can totally understand why someone would find this insufferable. The vocals and instrumentation are very much of a time. But it’s completely and totally my jam. I love the grungy sound, the whiny vocals, and the aggressive posturing. Plus I think the lyrics are great on both a thematic and technical level. 5/5

Garage rock. Un megahit. Venga, vinilo.

They made a lot of really boring shite music after this and it really pisses me off that this album really is good enough for me to be all good with them coasting for the next couple decades (even tho a lot of people claim they still like the music)

Love it. I need to listen to more Arctic Monkeys. There was never a moment that I wanted the current song or the album to end.

I had really high hopes for this because I love their album AM I like this well enough, but it was not what I was expecting having heard the other album first. ^i wrote that a few weeks ago and forgot to submit it lol. This is the only 1001 album so far that I’ve gone back and listened to multiple times so I think that means it gets 5 stars

I believe the hype

Woah, really really enjoy this album. I've listened to this album a few times in the past and it still holds up. Something about Mardy Bum is just sooo soo good and sticks with me.

Great debut album.

Really enjoyed this one a lot. Only a song or two I didn’t care for. The guitar in “Red Lights” was FUUUNKKKYYY. Amazing music in general.

A classic one for me and my generation!

i'm kind of a sucker for this one

moje bebe

Only knew of these guys from a Rock Band song. This is album is fucking great. One of the better Punk albums I listened to.

This is the first AM album I heard. It teleports me immediately to my teen years. Loved it then and love it now.

Amazing album.

The mid 2000’s in Britain saw the height of what was known as Lad Culture. Young, usually middle class men slumming it and being as obnoxious, drunk and misogynistic as possible. During the same time, Britain was going through a bit of a cultural renaissance. Nowadays it seems as if the music is what’s best remembered, but it also coincided with a lot of good films, fine art, literature and television. I bring up television because I want to talk about The Inbetweeners and Gavin & Stacey. These were two incredibly popular and influential sitcoms that both dealt with Lad Culture in interesting ways. The Inbetweeners showed the influence the culture had on young people, portraying the often boorish behaviour that a group of four teenage suburban misfits engaged in while trying to be cool. It is heartbreakingly relatable even to someone whose teenage years came a half decade after the lad’s. It also allows the characters to be flawed but to be surprisingly sweet in their own ways, showing the humanity behind the stereotypes. Gavin & Stacey takes place a few years down the line for these sorts of characters, and deals with the whirlwind romance of a handsome young man from Essex, England and a pretty young woman from Barry, South Wales, Smithy and Nessa, the title characters respective best friends. Through their interactions, Nessa gets pregnant and Smithy has to grow up in order to take responsibility as a father. He goes from a typical lad, to a half decent dad. Lad culture had grown up. The humanity shines through. At the same time as all this was happening on your telly screens, there was a music scene going on. Spearheaded by The Libertines, eho I think we get to later, and eventually fizzing out by about 2013, the British Indie Boom. Inspired by the Post-Punk Revival in the US, the British scene took the music in it’s own direction, and produced some fantastic music. Arctic Monkeys came a bit late to the party, but quickly established themselves as scene leaders. The Libertines had imploded in a catastrophe of celebrity relationships, heroin addiction and prison time. The Monkeys had been making waves underground since about 2004 with the release online of a demo that spread across the country, so by the time it came to release their major label single, the band were warning people to ‘[not] believe the hype.’ But we did. Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not is still the best selling Debut Album of all time over here. Both AM and Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino have gone on to become the best selling albums on Vinyl in the years they were released. Arctic Monkeys are a huge deal. Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not is pretty representative of Naughties Lad Culture. It’s a loose concept album about nights out. There are songs about drinking, about girls, about dancing. The cover was condemned by the press because the smoking ban had recently come into affect. It all seems like it smacks of the same blend of sexism, laddishness and bad decisions that plagued real club culture at the time. Except it doesn’t. The only really dodgy bit is Still Take You Home, but that song slaps and it does seem as if the narrator is actually in awe of the girl in question and so putting on some bravado to save face. Instead, much like The Inbtweeners and Gavin & Stacey, we get a sharply observed, well written, smart and funny dissection of Lad and Club Culture. The protagonists don’t get into the clubs, are intimidated by bouncers, complain about the bands, fail at skipping out on a taxi fare. And interspersed between these vignettes are songs like Mardy Bum, Riot Van, When The Sun Goes Down, which showed that the band could slow it down and write about women and cultural issues in a much more nuanced, reflective, sensitive, and in the case of Mardy Bum, romantic way than many of their contemporaries. Alex Turner establishes himself as one of the great songwriters on this album, and he’s kept that reputation up ever since. I love this album. It was one of the first bits of contemporary music I was aware of. I basically taught myself to play bass along to this album. So going back to it and listening with a critical ear has been fun. A Certain Romance closes the album on a high. It deals directly with the sort of culture that has been the background of the whole album, and gives them a haranguing. Their clothes, their music, the fighting, the drinking. There isn’t any romance in it. But with those friends over there… After two verses of demonising, he encourages the listener to humanise with certain of the lads, because they’re alright really. And in doing this, in allowing himself the luxury of circular thinking, he makes himself flawed, just as human as everyone else. This album deserves a place on this list. Not just because it is very good music, but because it is a cultural document. This brash but compassionate, cocky and sensitive, raw and lush collection of perfect guitar pop encompasses everything it meant to be young in Britain in 2006. And because of that, you just cannot get angry in the same way

Enjoyed it

Turns out, I like Arctic Monkeys. How did I miss this?

YEAHH Arctic Monkeys! I've loved this album for many years, and after all this time there are still zero skips for me. Witty, clever lyrics. Banger tunes. A perfect debut album!! Standout tracks: I love them all but Mardy Bum's my fave... it feels so warm Would I revisit this album? It's already on regular rotation!

Yes. Into my Veins. Every track a banger. I don't know why I love the working class british dialect in song so much, but I do.

An all time classic. For Alex and the boys to have produced stuff of this quality when they were teenagers is ridiculous. Such talent.

Absolute ripper of a debut album. The energy is top notch and the lyrics paint a vivid picture of life as an angsty British 20 something. So many good songs, that it's hard not to just listen to the whole album straight through

Nonstop bangers.

Absolutely superb. Such a fantastic debut album with so many dance floor fillers, and it also just brings back so many memories of the greatest city on earth! Not a thing I can fault in this, it’s just so good!!! 5/5

Goated with the sauce

one of the best albums to have ever existed love Alex's grunting voice and the drums are very prominent in this album

It's one of the best debut albums ever. All songs are great musically as a whole as all the instruments on their own, too. Superb band. Alex Turner is also one of the greatest lyricist of his generation, this album is also great lyrically, not just musically. The whole album perfectly captures the British youth in the mid 2000s. I haven't lived there but I am the same age as these guys are, and I listened to this album a lot when I was younger. Excellent debut in the very strong catalogue of Arctic Monkeys. It deserves the 5 stars.

I listen to a lot of music- a lot of Facebook polls like "Best Rap album" and "Best Experimental", "Best Jazz" and best 80's" etc etc and I wouldn't say I have good taste but I do get to hear a lot of stuff. Any album that has the lyric: "You're not from New York City, you're from Rotherham" is something special. In fact i'll also go as far as to to say this album is a triumph. These guys are Yorkshire lads and the accent is so stylised it's a pleasure.

10000/10 o jak się cieszę że ta płyta mi się ukazała w piątkowy ranek ❤️❤️❤️ Jedna z moich ulubionych płyt

Brit punk rock heaven. These guys lay down some exquisite fast-paced jams with fine-tuned fuzz pedals and accompanied by a unique vocalist. I was amazed to find out how much I loved this!

Lol I can't believe this is my first one. Such a great album.

Love this.

Fast, loud and tightly wound songs about late night drinking and waiting in line at the club. It's a classic debut album that introduced Alex Turner's sharp songwriting and in-your-face drawl. He stands out right away as a great rock frontman. His delivery drips with attitude and you can tell he's a good singer even if he spends most of this album shouting and sneering. Meanwhile, the band plays heavy metal riffs at punk speeds. But even when the music gets hard, the band’s performance feels light. You can dance to these songs as much as you can bang your head to them. You can thrash in the mosh pit or you can jump up and down on the sidelines. There are nothing but excellent songs on here including some classics. "I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor" is still a high-energy attention-grabber after hundreds of listens. "Mardy Bum" is a light and catchy pop-leaning number. And "From the Ritz to the Rubble" has always been a personal favorite. I love how it sounds like a speeding train about to fly off the rails. Another standout track is "Riot Van," a much-need midpoint palette cleanser. It's the song that I think best shows why Arctic Monkeys ended up having a long career as opposed to being a flash in the pan. Alex Turner takes a chaotic scene -- police officers arresting drunk teenagers and throwing them in a van -- and describes it in detail, adding in bits of dialogue. The action plays out in slow motion as gentle guitar strumming casts a rose-colored nostalgia over the scene. This could have been another lightning fast blast of punk rock but instead it's the most sentimental track on the album. It's a great example of Turner's observational writing as well as the band's impeccable taste and capability for restraint, qualities that have carried them through nearly two decades of music and counting.

Great intro. Drum fill right into that tremor-filled beat and rumbling guitars. "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor" is a certified slapper. Same with "Mardy Bum". There's a part of me that wants to give this a 4 because I think that in context, their album "AM" is a 5, and this one isn't as amazing to me as "AM". BUT, I am realizing that there's times where I give a rating of a 3 for example for an album that is really more like a 3.8, and I also give the same 3 rating for an album that just gets up to a low 3.1 or something. So there's more granularity inside of these of these single integer values. It's a great album by one of the best modern rock bands of our time.

A kick ass album. Peak Arctic Monkeys. Brings me back to rolling in the old Bronco.

So I cheated a lil in that I didn't closely listen to every song/had this on a background music. Which I've done that to a few of the previous albums and I would always have to go back. But unlike previous albums there would be songs that would make me pause and go "what the fuck did I just hear". I wasnt keeping track of specific songs or titles but I was jamming out to every single one on this album. I'll likely go back through this album *multiple* times to be decisive on my favorites. but for now the entire album is in the library. Sorry the Smiths "The Queen is Dead", but this album was a joy the entire way through, while you had some duds.

Amazing album

I’ve got quite the soft spot for this album. I think it really holds up. I had a lot of fun relistening to it after so long. Every track hits for me. Great stuff.

Arctic monkeys when they were actually good

Hell yeah. This is my kind of speed right here. Unique, but quality singing voice. Rhythmic changes all over the place. Heavy instrumentals. Creative riffs. This is what makes music fun to listen to. Favorite track: Perhaps Vampires is a Bit Strong But...

love this one

Arctic Monkeys always drums up nostalgia for me. Some of these songs are ballads, some pure adrenaline. Fabulous album.

good album… unfortunately they are British… 1star

My favorite indie rock album ever!

Not my favorite Arctic Monkeys album, but still miles better than most albums on this list

Quite possibly one of my favorite albums with a lot of the songs being some of the songs I have binged the most over the years. When the sun goes down is just one of those songs that spark some extraordinary emotions in me.

Crazy good album - love it!

Loved it. Will add this to my wishlist.

One of my favorite rock albums. Played a handful of the songs from this album with my band back when we played.

I can't be objective about this album because I love it so much. 18 year old me singing along to this live at Festival Hall has burned this album into my brain and the dopamine hit gets me every time.

I don’t have to fucking listen to the fucking arctic monkeys because I am one who knows - the lyrics are marvelous, turners voice is marvelous, the agile beast is beastly, the guitar work is excellent. I love this album

Very unique to their own style, the debut album kick's up their discography with a bang.

A throwback to my formative years. Always rate highly

"The View from the Afternoon" started strongly and had some great music. I especially loved the stumbling guitar after the bout of silence. Amazing start. "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" had some nice drumming. Good song. I really liked the chorus of "Fake Tales of San Francisco." Great song. More good drumming in "Dancing Shoes." Great song. A classic 2000's song title with "You Probably Couldn't See for the Lights but You Were Staring Straight at Me." Good song. "Still Take You Home" was great. "Riot Van" was a pleasant change of pace. I really liked the tremolo on the guitar during the instrumental break. Good song. "Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured" was fine. "Marty Bum" was great. I liked the guitar solo. Another classic 2000's song title with "Perhaps Vampires Is a Bit Strong But..." Nice effects on the vocals, an excellent instrumental break during the second half, and another great use of stop and start. Amazing song. "When the Sun Goes Down" had an effective increase in intensity and tempo, and a nice bookend. Great song. "From the Ritz to the Rubble" was good. I liked the outro. "A Certain Romance" opened with some awesome drumming. A great closer to the album. Overall, the album had some really nice use of syncopation and beat changes. Great music, especially the drums, and great, emotive vocals.

Great album. The raw and full effect Arctic Monkeys. Later albums became more polished and commercial. But this still has a fresh unpolished punch to it. Love it.

What an album. Introduced some of Arctic Monkeys better songs and sets the scene

Jeugdherinneringen

There's not a weak song on this album, it starts with huge energy and that keeps going. It makes me a little sad that they moved from this indie style to the crooning later on but I suppose they couldn't have kept this up forever.

This one really surprised me! I'd heard of Arctic Monkeys, but never really gave them a serious listen. The instruments and lyrics were fun to listen to.

La vie est un escape game

dont believe the hype

One of my favorite albums as a kid

Fantastic!

This is my favorite Artic Monkeys album. It's packed full of personality. While they hadn't really found their signature sound yet traces of it can be found here inside more abrasive packaging. The album starts with some fast tempo tracks like the view and the afternoon and I bet you look good on the dance floor. The comparisons to the strokes are inevitable as these tracks feel effortless cool and apathetic. Even slower tempo tracks like Mardy Bum have a comically self depreciation charm to them that makes me laugh. Nostalgia may cloud my judgement for this one in particular but I'm feeling a solid 5/5

Outside of AM, I've listened to almost no Arctic Monkeys. This is far earlier in their catalog; I'm excited. Album opens on a tear with The View From the Afternoon. Taps into some punky vibes with vocals that remind of White Stripes mixed with Jet. Dancing Shoes is a jam, as is Vampires. Honestly loved this album start to finish. Went in with little in the way of expectations and was completely blown away. Production is interesting with some lo-fi elements intermixed with polished tracks; gives the album a good deal of texture. Lot of raw energy that is channeled through so many of the songs. Reminds of early Modest Mouse with a bit more restraint and polish, and tighter song writing. I'm a high 4 learning 5. I think I'll go 5 because I could see this one growing on me over time.

This album rules. This and Favourite Worst Nightmare are prime Arctic Monkeys imo. Just beautifully scrappy with so many hooks that you can pretty much tap your shoes to on every track. While I dig the new Monkeys nothing comes close to these first two albums for me. Give me Favourite Worst Nightmare next!

High energy, fun to listen to! It was unique and super interesting.

Bit of an all timer this, they were great before they all found themselves stuck firmly inside Alex Turners arse. 4.5

FUCKING LOVE THIS ALBUM, A great starter in View from the afternoon, ending in A Certain romance, best debut album of all time imo

Love it. Classic Monkeys

what can I say that hasnt been said ? - great energetic really different fun sound - playful full bore rock. yeah!

Big soft spot for this album

Very good

Boom! A superb debut album as the Arctic Monkeys cam swaggering into the public consciousness. Banging guitar riffs and frenetic drumming underlie the urban poetry of a young Alex Turner, describing the trials and tribulations of a 20-something Steel City native.

Wonderful lyrics, clever songs

Brilliant and of its time. Exactly what was needed.

Excellent

From the Ritz to the Rubble When the Sun Goes Down I Bet You Look Good on the Dance floor. Enuf said. One of the best Artic Monkey albums. Looking forward now to Favourite Worst Nightmare album to come up for review.

One of the defining albums of the indie rock genre. The songwriting is incredible on this album, and it takes you through a vigorous journey. -Klep

Strange to think this is now a classic when I recall it being quite new, with a couple of tracks now popular wedding fodder. Solid album, although not new to me

Incredible debut, this is everything indie rock should be. Favourites: All of them

I was waiting for this to turn up. To answer Wardy's comment - yes, peak Monkeys. There were rumblings of this band when I was in Sheffield in 2005 and it didn't disappoint.

Arctic Monkeys were one of the many mid-2000's guitar rock indie bands that were dubbed "saviors of rock." This album didn't save rock music, because rock music didn't need saving. It's just a great rock album from a great rock band, but rock music didn't dominate the airwaves like it once did. This album sounds a lot like other mid-2000's indie guitar rock. But what sets it apart is the raw energy, and a bit of extra spice in the songwriting. A perfect example is at 1:40 in Fake Tales of San Francisco. It's far from my favorite song on the album, and starts off pretty tame and cookie-cutter. But at 1:40, the song shifts in an unexpected yet completely logical way, the energy builds, and it becomes something special. Moments like this keep this album feeling fresh to this day.

Very much my style of music. I love the punk style and driving guitar and drums. Lyrics and lead vocals are great. Very British.

Outstanding. I listened 5 x today.

Makes me happy cos it's great but also makes me sad cos they're shit now.

Perfection, even Riot Van. What happened to them.

I listened to 2 other albums from this band right after this one, love their sound.

-i am SOO EXCITED about this -i LOVE the arctic monkeys, one of my favorites -i have listened to a few songs on this album but not all of them -the view from the afternoon is a GREAT album opener -i LOVE i bet you look good on the dancefloor -fake tales of san fran is a groovy fun bop -the guitar in arctic monkeys songs is some of my favorite guitar ever (brian may in queen is first place tho) -young alex turner you are everything to me -haven’t actually heard you probably couldn’t see for the lights but i really like it -vampires is so good…. -GUITAR AT THE END OF VAMPIRES IS CRAZY -LOOOOVE when the sun goes down -favorites: i bet you look good on the dancefloor, mardy bum, when the sun goes down, i bet you look good on the dancefloor -definitely 5 stars for me

The ferociousness of this debut is unparalleled. Not a single miss - just a bunch of young Northerners writing about hitting the town and running from cops. 17 years later, I still know all the lyrics by heart, many bruises have been acquired "dancing" to 'I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor', and in the meantime no other band has released anything close to 'You Probably Couldn't See for the Lights but You Were Staring Straight at Me'. Goddamn I miss this version of Arctic Monkeys...

Did Arctic Monkeys come out strong or what? Their debut album never misses a moment as they take you on a journey through Sheffield from the viewpoint of a young man who just wants dancing and romancing. I sorely miss this era of those freezing primates.

I’ve never heard any songs on this album and they are all great! The whole album is like a movie about bored young men looking for a good time in some town I never heard of in northern England. And they happen to be in a garage band, trying to make it big and get the hell out.

Makkelijke 5 sterren.

This is an album I can listen to over and over again. It’s fun music, with a good rock background, and something about it feels defiant and youthful, yet doesn’t cater to the young teeny bopper type. I’ve heard a few songs from this album on their own and liked them, and now I need the whole album! Listen again: yes Purchase for my collection: yes Favourite Song: Still Take You Home

Funnily enough, Arctic Monkeys was the indie band I liked the least. I was a huge fan of Maximo Park and Bloc Party. But it seems like the Monkeys outshone them both by quite a margin.

From start to finish, this is an excellent album. Every single song here is close to perfect, and even the lackluster tracks still a solid 7/10. For the Arctic Monkeys, this is as good as it gets. Highly recommended, 5/5.

The most Sheffield album you'll ever hear. All killer, no filler.

Banging album. It’s a 10/10. With cutting lyrics and driving beats from top to bottom it’s an immaculate portrayal of the northern youth experience in the early 2000s. Alex Turner’s wit is unmatched. Although it’s not my favourite monkeys record I could argue it’s their best. One of the best debuts of all time.

Yes. A masterpiece.

One of the best debut albums ever.

Ok, that's neat. The brain says 4, but the heart says 5

THIS SHIT IS SO CATCHY the grooves are astronomical idk this album scratches the exact itch in the brain that makes me want to pick up my guitar n jam. this is arctic monkeys at their finest along with their next LP. I forgot the singers name but i love his voice and inflections as usual. This album is just insanely solid and an indie rock mega classic. fav tracks: Perhaps Vampires is a Bit Strong but..., When The Sun Goes Down, I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor, A Certain Romance, Still Take You Home

Love the throwbacks you get doing this. I realise this will make me sound very young but this was a real coming of age for us at the time, it confronted reality in a way a lot of the pop we'd been growing up with didn't and the musicianship is great and gave us something to aspire too.

I already knew I liked this album, but revisiting the entire thing was a nice listen.

Great album. already been a fan of theirs for years and this is a great solid debut album.

Great band, great album. Good variety between tracks and changes in tempo.

Love this. Great song writing and great energy.

Great debut from a great band! love Thesingles from the Album but especially "Mardy Bum"

Yes, what an album! Quite possibly one of the greatest debut albums of the 00s, and in my opinion one of the greatest acts of the 00s Post-Britpop movement. There's not a bad song on this album - This is one of only a few albums so far on this list where, throughout, I just couldn't get the thought out my head of "This album is just amazing." Really, really good. I just wish Arctic Monkeys still made this kind of music. Favourite: I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor

Chuffing excellent!

amazing debut album, every song is brilliant.

Pure genius!

That was a bit of rockin' fun. I wasn't so sure that I would be able to appreciate the album from the first track, but then it settled in. Yeah, it was good.

In college, a group of guys in my dorm cluster formed a band and called themselves Vivid Arctic and I think that made me biased against bands with Vivid or Arctic in their names. Shame. This is fun and upbeat and I bopped around the whole time. Loved it.

I bought this album when it came out based on how taken I was with “I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor.” The phrasing of the chorus is particularly clever and really catchy. This was one of the bands that felt like 21st Century Rock to me when it came out. It’s hard not to compare them to Franz Ferdinand who formed in the same year. Head to head, I might prefer these guys by a nose… I love how they stick the basics and crank up the energy while feeling new and modern. I’m glad to hear it again because everything I loved about this then came right back. Great album from a group I need to spend more time listening to.

Alfa album. EZ 5 stars.

One of my favorite albums since I was 18. Brings back great memories of being young and the guitars riffs are some of my favorite ever.

This album is such a moment, just banger after banger

Is it as good as I remember it? Perhaps not quite. Is it still a fantastic album and amazing commentary on life back then and up north? Absodamnlutely. This album will always be able to take me back to this era and for that reason I think it does it's job well.

What an amazing debut album. It goes hard, start to finish. There isn't a bad track in the bunch. Were Arctic Monkeys the saviors of rock n' roll? I think one could make that argument. 5 stars.

This arrived with a b-b-bang. The greatest debut record of the 21st Century. An absolute explosion of music with lyrics, humour, observation and just the right amount of anger. A group of lads that worked out how to make music in their own way. A classic.

It's undoubtedly iconic.

this album made me reconsider my thoughts on British people. I didn’t think I would like arctic monkeys at first based off of the singles I had heard, but after giving this a chance it ended up in my top 5 most listened to albums of last year and has become one of my favorite records of the 2000s. Energy, musicianship, and engaging songwriting and structure really set Arctic Monkeys apart from other bands in the late 00s indie rock boom. Most Favorite Song: Fake Tales of San Francisco I like the outro when he tells other bands to stop dickriding Least Favorite Song: Riot Van I like the song and the lyrics and everything but it’s too much of a drop off in pace for me after the first half of the album and I often end up skipping it

First half is all bangers and obviously fake tales is one of my favorites to cover. All the drumming is sick and there are a ton of good guitar riffs. The lyrics are also pretty clever and funny and the last song kinda perfect sums up the album. The last line also reminds of seeing the Salisbury boys do some heinous shit when we’re fucked up and if a guy in any other group did it you’d think he’s a fucking douche but it’s your boy so it’s funny as hell. Definitely one of my favorite albums and is a classic garage rock album. Favorite: A certain romance Least favorite: I guess still take you home

Like Beatles, Clash, and Smiths before them, Arctic Monkeys are exemplary ambassadors of British youth culture. The band is frenetic and immediate, clanking and clattering, big and bold. Lyrically, it’s sharp and stylish, never contrived. Now I know what it’s like to go clubbing in Sheffield. Standout Tracks: I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor, Fake Tales of San Francisco, Mardy Bum, When the Sun Goes Down

it's possible this is my favorite arctic monkeys album

Stupid name, great album. Best Tracks: I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor; Fake Tales of San Francisco; Still Take You Home

Arctic Monkeys are a band that I bought stock in early. I had heard some of the demos that were going around before the album released, this was in the era of websites like Stereogum and other MP3 blogs. The narrative at the time was that this act was the next Libertines (who had flamed out like a year or two earlier). I also remember taking one of my friends to Future Shop for me to buy this album when it came out. A few weeks later the Arctic Monkeys gave one of the all time great performances on SNL (when Alex mid song calls out someone for yawning). I fully expected them to take over culture then and there and while they were known, they were never really huge. They did however get huge when they changed their sounds by slowing down and dropping key. Those albums I really have never listened to. Perhaps I should give them a fair shake Haven’t heard this album in whole for over 10 years. Every song hits completely. Mardy Bum especially is pop perfection.

LOVED this one growing up. Fast, fun, and so very British. 5 stars.

Amazing album, even though I’d heard a couple of the songs already it exceeded my expectations with how much energy is in this project. Would definitely recommend just wish I checked it out sooner

Loved it

Oh nostalgia you got me again you filthy bitch, But I'll take it gladly and milk it dry with both hands. One of my all time favourite albums, great energy and I love the guitar and bass sound, Too bad he moved away from the Sheffield accent but we always have this beauty.

5/5 fantastic from start to finish

Great album, lots of nostalgia for 6th form and first year of uni!

What a banger!

Hold on to your hats, because this album is an absolute thrill ride from start to finish! If you're looking for high-octane, heart-pumping alt-rock, then "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" is the album for you. From the very first track, you're hit with a wave of frenetic energy that practically leaps out of your speakers. The opening song is a wild, raucous romp that sets the tone for the entire album. And the energy level doesn't let up from there - the band keeps things cranked up to 11 for the majority of the album. But don't think for a second that this album is just mindless noise. There's a method to the madness here, and each track is packed with clever lyrics and catchy hooks that will have you humming along for days. And even when things do finally start to mellow out a bit towards the end of the album, the band never loses their edge or their passion. In short, "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" is a powerhouse album that will get your blood pumping and your heart racing. So if you need a shot of adrenaline in your music collection, this is the album you've been waiting for!

Absolute fucking banger

It was good, nothing really stood out about it though.

Love this album!

Heerlijke plaat. Haters gonna hate, looking at you Eric :-P

Already listened to this album countless times! A classic. Fave tracks are probably Dancing Shoes and A Certain Romance.

Speaks to me of a time and place and brings me back to being that again and in that place again every time I turn it on. It’s also, not afraid to turn the lens back on that culture and to me it’s both involved in and way more self consciously critical of elements of it than I think is often reflected in commentary.

Great rock album. Liked perhaps vampires. Riot van was a nice slow jam.

Love AM, love this album

Good good. I believe I listened to another artcitc monkeys album but I don’t remember it being as good as this one.

I love every song on this album. Top tier stuff for me

Rating: 10/10

Great great album!

Kris and his friends played songs of this album all the time, never realised how many bangers were on this album and how many I actually have heard before.

Clear 5 star. Not saying it's the best album ever but it's the most I've enjoyed and album since we started 1001 albums. Brilliant.

Classic album

Classic debut. Never bettered it.

5/5. Not quite rock, not quite punk, a bit of both. Every song slaps and any one could be randomly put on and it’d be awesome.

Extraordinary drumming

PERF PERF PERF

Yes, I love this album. Yes, I was a teenager when it came out.

Solid sound, grunge from the very 90's
