Reviews (page 8 of 14)

Really sweet album. I love the energy and creativity that Pixies always bring. The songs are very simple but catchy and some silly bits mixed in as well make it pretty fun. 8/10

AWESOME

Really good album, didn’t know they had a girl singer Where is my mind

You cab hear how the moved a lot of mainstream rock into the grunge and punk genre.

Cool album. I have always like their sound.

best song is where is my mind, most of the song just feels like the band goofing around and having a good time, especially with the bits of dialogue

First listen through-I haven't listened to a rockish album in a while, so this was head-banging and a change of pace for me. I appreciated that it didn't feel super repetitive.

The drum is sick! Not all tracks have stuck with me, but I generally like this album and would listen to it one more time.

An undeniable classic and hugely important album. BUu not quite a 5 star album for me. Where is My Mind is a near perfect song but I do find a couple songs fall in the category of filler...(Tony's Theme). Doolittle for me IS a 5 star album, Surfer Rosa...close real close but not quite there. 4.5 stars

Gigantic and where is my mind are really good

where is my mind? in the bathroom apparently

The band that put an end to cheesy 80's rock and made things dangerous and funny again. The album takes a dip in quality right after Cactus but the first half is classic after classic. Not my favorite Pixies album, but there's no denying everyone should hear this at least once.

It's not a perfect album in its execution, but that's what makes it really great. That's how they felt it and that's how they released it. Deal with it.

One of my favorite album. Hits are great even the filler arent really filler. I would have love to see them in show. I was really happy when this album came to the ''challenge''

Guitar riffs as catchy as chlamydia. Bass lines as solid as a teenager's first time at a strip club. Swirling, mad, intense vocals. And most importantly - the whole thing is fun. Even when it's manic and bizarre and a bit nasty, it's still fun. I give this 4 cheeky sexual innuendos out of 5. 🍑🍆🍌🌮

An adrenaline-fueled rush of melody and dynamics.

Sloppy controlled chaos.

Surfer Rosa is a must listen amongst Pixies fans. Where is My Mind is every bit of perfection you you for one of those lonely nights to cry inside to. Bone machine was my nickname in high school, Vaughan can attest. It’s also one of my favs to kick off the album. This is one of those records that you can start and finish three times over and still have it feel refreshing every time. It’s some of the peak music to come from the alternative genre in the late 80s. With takes where the band is just goofing and talking to each other, you feel like you’re right in the studio. I love how intimate this album can feel to a listener. Top Tracks: Where is My Mind, Bone Machine, Tony’s Theme

Never listened to a full Pixies album, but I enjoy their biggest hits, two of which are here on Surfer Rosa, so here goes. Really hoping I can find some gems beyond the singles. First impressions of Bone Machine are good, but the hook is a bit nagging, and sort of spoils some perfectly good 80s alternative instrumentation. Something Against You rocks. The bouncy guitar lick combined with the building drums is a nice start. Pretty wild to hear a borderline instrumental track so early in the tracklist, but hey!, that's early indie! Another reminder that Where Is My Mind is one of the best songs of the 80s! The perfect soundtrack for a main character existential crisis! This song had every reason to be as big of a hit as it is. With every song, I realize more and more that Billy Corgan calling this record and the Pixies discography an inspiration is the understatement of a century. This album belongs on this list, if just only for the influence it had on the best rock of the early 90s. Favorite tracks: Where Is My Mind, Gigantic, Something Against You, Tony's Theme Least favorite tracks: Broken Face, Bone Machine

It's fookin raaaaw.

The pixies have done some good stuff.

Great album, I've loved it since high school. Used to cover some of these songs in our HS band. There are some songs that feel a bit like filler but great overall. Standout Tracks: Bone Machine, Broken Face, Gigantic, Where Is My Mind?

Where is my mind. That's it thank you. Overall really cool album, I really like the punk/grunge inspiration. Not all the songs are real bangers and I found it drags a bit on some songs. I think the voice recording is the part where we can feel that it is a debut album the most. Not too annoying but you can notice it a bit. I really enjoyed it and I think I will come back to it. 4.5 / 5

This is an interesting one. I only knew the top hit before listening and wasn't expecting such distortion. But I liked it. the guitar tones were super nice and different, but also within the album and the drums and bass are just so in sync throughout this whole album, the rhythm section is doin a sick ass job. My biggest complaint is the length of the songs, I think due to such short tunes they are a little less memorable and start to blend together, and sure enough my favorite songs are essentially the longest ones: Where is my mind? (obviously), Bone Machine, Gigantic, River Euphrates and I also liked something against you quite a lot - beautiful tone. solid 3.5

Pixies - surfer rosa Notes - Debut album by pixies - CLASSIC Steve albini drum sound & production - Great raw, direct songs with often surreal lyrics - The vocal interplay between black francis and Kim deal Fav - Where is my mind - Another absolutely undeniably good song - Suuuuuper overplayed but its still great - Equal parts relatable and unsettling, simple and nuanced Least fav - Cactus - I like the vocal performance but the instrumental simplicity doesn’t do it for me Fantastic album, not my #1 pixies album though! 4.5/5

I've already listened to this record but today I'm giving it another listen It has some of my favorites from The Pixies Bone Machine is good but doesn't blow me away or anything Break my Body got me bopping Something Against You is just great Broken Face is fun Gigantic is as good as I remember River Euphrates is good but not my favorite Where is My Mind? is just a classic, 10/10 Cactus is a nice driving along song Tony's Theme is fun and fast makes me want to skate to it Oh My Golly is fast and fun Vamos has, like Oh my golly, some badly pronounced spanish but otherwise it's a fun song I'm amazed is I think my least favorite so far Brick is Red was ok

This was quite good. I can't bring myself to give it a 5, but I also can't help but feel like this band influenced so much of my favorite music from the 90s and 00s. Pretty good! 4/5

I get the Pixies hype now. The debut suffers at times from lack of focus, but there's nothing I wish I had known to skip. The production is in the right harshness zone for the compositions, most of which work out. I can see this one burrowing away at one's mind, shaping it.

Nice instrumental profoundly weird lyrics.

Rock alternativo.

6/4 minds lost

Probably their best album

Side B far exceeds side A in terms of shred but all up an excellent listen

I never actually listened to this album - despite being well-aware of its existence. It was never really more to me than a pop culture reference that I heard other artists swooning about. It was probably the "I'm too cool to listen to the thing you think is cool" part of me that prevented me from ever caring enough to give it a shot. But, I get it. It's a great punk album. It's different. It's impressive for a debut album. No complaints.

Chaotic and noisy, true punks doing whatever they want, incorporating humor or drama, nonsensical noise or ordered melody. Yet it all works and sounds fantastic, with huge punk and surf rock influences, going for a rough, raw sound and completely unpredictable every second of the way. It goes by so fast, with many great ideas, less than a third of the tracks go much longer than 2 and a half minutes. Each song offers something new and exciting, but it can get tiresome on too many repeats as the novelty wears off. It got a bit... ant-music in the last 4 tracks... I find it so hilarious. Never understand the grand appeal of this album... people should hate it. I don't hate it, but I feel like most people should. The appeal couldn't just be due to "Where Is My Mind"... Favorites: Bone Machine, Break My Bones, Gigantic, River Euphrates, Where Is My Mind, Cactus, Brick is Red

Rock alternativo tirando a punk. Está bien. Un 4.

Pretty fun!

Off to a fun start with the first two albums being totally in my wheelhouse. Though this isn't my favourite Pixies album, it definitely has some of my favourite songs of theirs. Especially Bone Machine. Such a great song. Other than getting to listen some some of my favourite Pixies songs, this album listen didn't really win me over any new favourites though,

Classic Pixies. "Where Is My Mind" is probably their biggest hit, unfortunately I've heard it so many times I can't listen to it anymore due to other media saturation. Regardless, it's a good album. Not as good as Doolittle, but still good.

This was alright. I preferred the back half of the album, starting with “River Euphrates.” I’ve always meant to listen to Pixies so it was good to do that…however, I’m not sure I’d purposely listen to this again. I think I’m going to prefer Doolittle, based on the tracks I know.

I like the Pixies but they are a 'mood' band for me. This is good, inventive, quirky and of course hugely influencial. If you could bottle up 'not contrived' then this would be it.

Manic, untamed and experimental. They pack a lot of musical ideas into a relatively short runtime, which makes for a fun listen. The songs crackle with life, feeling almost spontaneous and unrehearsed. The album is pretty hard and unpolished but then “Where Is My Mind?” comes out of nowhere with a big rock anthem. Such a great song. Awesome stuff.

Awesome display of alternative rock right hurrr! Not the most polished, but that kind of adds to the roughness of the whole thing, talking about broken faces and other unsavory topics. Obviously, "Where Is My Mind?" is a cornerstone of the dark, melodic shit I LIVE for.

Great indie alternative rock album. "Where Is My Mind" is such an anthem!

Some of my favorite bands consider Pixies a massive influence so I really don't listen to them as much as I should. This album absolutely rips. Where Is My Mind? is obviously a bonafide classic in particular.

Love it!!

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Where is my mind

This is the real alternative to me, not sounding quite like anything else. The whole album doesn’t stay at quite the same level, but Gigantic and Where Is My Mind moved directly into the eternal pantheon for this kind of music.

Would give this 3.5 if it was an option, but cannot in my heart round that down to a 3, so it's up to a 4 (but only just).

Some classic tracks but one of those albums I always wonder when I’d actually choose to put it on.

Pixies first. Where is my mind is a classic. Very spacious production on the full album. They go on to make better things.

13 songs in 33 minutes of full blown energetic, raw rock & roll. The guitar sound is sharp, the music rocks and rambles, the drums are loud and Frank Black sounds like he's bordering on a meltdown. The importance of this album in music history, can't be overstated. It's where the 90's began in the 80's. Still, not every song on this album is a bullseye. A song like Cactus feels like filler. And there's one or two other misses. It's such a pleasure listening to it though, it gives off vibes of happiness

With rather bizarre topics and angular, bombastic and boisterous instrumentation, it's no wonder why Pixies became darlings in the late 80s. They were a breath of fresh air yet a precursor of what was to come in the coming decade. With songs that wiggle around your brain with such ease, Surfer Rosa marks Pixies' ascent up the influential sphere of indie/alternative rock. Favorites: Bone Machine, Break My Bones, Broken Face, Gigantic, River Euphrates, Where is My Mind?, Tony's Theme, Vamos (Surfer Rosa).

very nice, 4.5/5

estuov bonito yantiguito sisi

Today's Album: "Surfer Rosa" by Pixies - From the bare tits on the album cover to the strange spoken word interludes to the off kilter singing and whining guitars the pixies are fucking WEIRD. My dad has always recommended them to me because he's really into this era of punk rock, but I just could never get into how avante garde and honestly wrong everything they created sounded to me. However, I think listening to this album with headphones cranked up and the lyrics up, I think I can start to appreciate some of these tracks a lot. Some of the vocals sound like they're shouting at the microphone from the other side of a slinky or something with very little depth and this weird accent they put on. It sort of reminds me of when Modest Mouse gets kind of in the weeds and starts shouting at the microphone from across the room. That being said, I don't really think that's a bad thing. As I have started to get more into abrasive genres of music, it's gotten easier to pick out the nuanced and creative ideas out of a chaotic piece of work like this. I would say if that isn't your thing and you have never been able to dig deep into, on the surface terrible sounding, music for a deeper experience, this probably isn't for you. There is also a lot of really weird subject matter in the lyrics, but I think it all sort of fits together to create a uniform aesthetic. The guitar work throughout this whole album is really quite stellar, with the instrumentalist really knowing when to play something straight and when to go off into the weeds a little bit with a strange sound experiment with occasionally multiple layers. The distortion always feels really intentional, the drums feel like they aren't perfectly in time, but never to a distracting degree, and the vocalist really just make the entire experience one of confusion and strange enjoyment. Now there are really moments that I don't like, like the obnoxious phrasing on Broken Face, but it is easy to overlook those sort of oddities when the music sort of just takes them on with pride and keeps chugging along. When the band decides to play a track fairly straight like in the track Gigantic or the masterpiece that is Where is My Mind?, it really sounds so so good and makes the harder to listen to parts more bearable. Overall, listen to this one if you like to challenge yourself musically, but maybe give it a little while if you're a newer music fan and haven't heard the heaver parts to punk/indie rock or even metal. A lot of these tracks I won't listen to casually, but as a whole experience it was very interesting from start to finish. Score: 7/10 definitely…interesting Highlights: Bone Machine, Something Against You, Gigantic, Where Is My Mind?, Tony's Theme, Brick Is Red

I need to listen to this a dozen more times to appreciate it properly I think.

Right in the middle of this album there's a run of seriously excellent songs that remind you why everyone afterwards was inspired by the Pixies. However on either side of this group is a bunch of noise rock that sounds more like they just wanted to rebel against pop music of the time. It's like a 3.5 for me but I love the middle bit enough for a 4

Wanted to get into this album for a while.

Missed the boat on this one i think. Hits are still hits, and the rest still sounds great.

Edgy and raw.

Where is my mind is a big tune and the rest are decent. Lot sillier and weirder than I was expecting, have to say.

Fuck Nirvana.

4, v good

Good alternative rock album

I am familiar with THE PIXIES and their debut album SURFER ROSA, which I liked very much. After listening to SURFER ROSA, this album is very good, but the vocals are too low in the mix In 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, THE PIXIES - SURFER ROSA, is followed by two subsequent albums: DOOLITTLE (1989); BOSSANOVA (1990). 4.1 + What an amazing drum sound - just listen to how it kicks in at the beginning of "Where is My Mind?" Also, the guitars sound incredible especially on "Something Against You" - gnarly, overwrought. I love that they included some of the studio banter towards the end of the album, like on "Oh My Golly!" I can see why this album was a huge influence in 1988 and so many artists would flock to the great Steve Albini to achieve a similar sound of loose and explosive swagger.

Rock alternativo tirando a punk.

Je connaissais seulement Where is my mind.

Not their best, but it's good

a mix of punk alternative rock and some experimental weird touches makes for something that reminds me of smashing pumpkins but in its own unique way

Second pixies album in a week. Never really listened properly before but I am really enjoying them.

Love the energy. Crazy vocals and lyrics. The band members work well together.

I love this album and it's in pretty regular rotation for me normally. Favorite songs: Something Against You, Broken Face, Where Is My Mind (of course!), Oh My Golly! and Vamos.

I'll get back to it, some absolute classics on here

A good amount of energy and attitude make this a winner.

BLack delivers non stop catchy, edgy guitar riffs and I like the 2 vocalists. I'm sure it was hard to come up with an original sounding LP in 88 with only guitar bass and drums but they pull it off.

wise grunge/garbage band ive ever heard

Cool and very different. Surf punk. Sounds like white stripes and modest mouse. Where is my mind is iconic.

Very good

From Nirvana to The White Stripes, I can hear a lot of alternative rock acts germinating in this album. "Surfer Rosa" is one of the first alternative rock album, surfing from 1988, yet it sounds as fresh as freshly catched fish. Is the reason punk fans enjoy punk is the fun feeling of the raw, edgy, chaotic, and loud sound of it? Perhaps, and that's why I enjoyed this album a lot. It's gritty, yet fun. Some tracks still sound like forgettable loud garage rock snippets, but a lot of it are one of the best punk songs I have ever heard to date. "Bone Machine", "Gigantic", "River Euphrates", and "Where is My Mind" are notable examples. This album is just a bit above thirty minutes long, but I felt like I listened to an hour worth of the so-called "art punk." Perhaps because it's such a unique sounding album, perhaps because most of the latter half is pretty dull.

Pixies hadn't made much of an impression on me in their heyday, but giving them full attention here really raised them up. Honestly don't know that they are that distinctive from the big soup of the pop-punk 90s surge but I enjoyed the full album.

Its the pixies.

The album reminded me a lot of early Jane’s Addiction, but much more punk. I know Nirvana used their producer for “In Utero.” You can really feel how raw the band is. I never realized listened to the Pixies, but I respect their influence on many bands I enjoy now. I did feel a couple of songs were a little “jokey,” but one can skip over those. (I’m looking at you, “Tony’s Theme!”) A joke song or two is ok, but you don’t want to overdo that. All in all, I liked what I heard. May have to do more listening of their work.

You know, I've listened to this album a few times in the recent past because I like the Pixies and I love Where is My Mind. But prior to now I think what I really liked was the Pixies greatest hits. I don't think I really gave any one album a focused listen. And after the first few tracks I thought that's where I'd stay. But I found myself really getting hooked by Broken Face and that continued right through to at least Tony's Theme. On second and third listen, I really enjoyed it all. Maybe it's because I was an alternative era kid, but I love the slow-fast revolutions (Gigantic is a great Pixies signature for that). I also like their simple arrangements that combined a bit of distortion or gruff edge to the guitar riffs and bass lines (with nice pounding drums as backing). River Euphrates and Cactus are other songs I didn't fully appreciate until now. One knock against the album is some of the unnecessary interludes, dialogues, and gibberish within the last 4 tracks. The Pixies are trailblazers in alternative rock (as was this album), too bad we only got 4 albums in 4 successive years (I don't count the stuff released decades later). Not sure I can put it on the same pedestal as Zeppelin, Jimi, or Rage, but almost.

This album was at least three years ahead of its time. There were several points where I was thinking I was listening to Nirvana and other big alternative bands of the 90s. Favorite tracks - Bone Machine and Break My Body (both sounded a lot like Nirvana), Where Is My Mind (immediate thought - hey, I know this song!), Cactus (I knew the David Bowie version. For some reason I thought he was covering Neil Young. Very wrong about that one). Really enjoyed this album. I'd say 4 because there was a little too much feedback and a little too much incest.

Great album!! Solid 4.4

my favorite song was cactus in a weird way a lot of the songs reminded me of mother mother which i liked a lot when i was in high school i wanna play this when im driving with the windows down!

I love the Pixies and this album has some great tracks but I don't love 100% of it.

Classic alternative. A treasure.

Awesome always loved this

Beaut, 8/10

Super melodic catchy tunes. Upbeat. Fun. Weird cries and noises that put a smile on your face (Fun sounding harmonies) Not a complicated rhythm in the whole record. Which works for the sound. The mix is a bit empty. But it works for the sound. It’s mostly a guitar bass and drums. Piano added mildly. But it’s so catchy and fun your ears don’t miss a wall of loud mixed sounds. The simplicity is lovely.

One of my top 50?

Heavy-rotation on college radio show, and with good reason. Was essential listening for me that year, but it has been ages since I've had it on start-to-finish. Holds up with amazing energy! Excellent production by Steve Albini, restraining the madness at times and then letting it all loose.

Tunes, good. Vocals, not so much.

A band that somehow passed me by, listening this has made me want to explore more of their catalogue. Clearly hugely influential on band like Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and half the 90s by the sounds of it. Brilliant stuff.

Love Pixies idiosyncratic style and energy. Love Doolittle, this is a close 2nd.

Hadn't listened to this in ages, still bangs

Fav songs: - Bone Machine - Broken Face - Where Is My Mind?

I liked. And I knew at least one!

Classic classic classic Pixies. Sexy, dirty, menacing, it has it all. So innovative when it came out and it has aged remarkably well. A true classic Top tracks: Gigantic, Where is my mind, River Euphrates, Oh my golly

Gigantic is one of my favorite songs ever. And for that, and the album cover, this ranks very high for me.

Oh doctor and hello, nurse! I think I've heard the Pixies a time or two but never like this (in this list). Love the garage band sound and the short sweet songs. A 33 minute album is just how I like it. Gigantic was a stand out and so was this album cover.

Excellent album. What a malignant surprise. I've wanted to hear this one for a while now, due to how much I love "Where Is My Mind." However, the recent James Wan movie MALIGNANT features a god-awful cover of the track that has given me many sleepless nights. So, unfortunately, the timing of this album is bittersweet. But no, it's a really great one. I enjoyed this quite a lot. Lays the groundwork for a lot of grunge-y rock that followed, like Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins. The interludes of chatter are interesting too. I saved a lot of songs from this album. Crazy too that this band has the same Frank Black (or Black Francis) who gave us that teenager album that was not so hot. Favorite tracks: Where Is My Mind, Bone Machine, Break My Body, Tony's Theme, Vamos. Album art: Drake the kinda guy to see this cover, have his heart literally beat a foot out of his chest like The Mask, then ask the woman to cover up. Is that the titular surfer, Rosa? She looks great. I can't help but dig this one. 4.5/5

This album is destined to remain their great masterpiece, and one of the masterpieces of the entire decade, one of the most influential albums of its time. Almost every song speaks for itself. It's hard to find a common denominator, apart from extreme creativity and the usual light-heartedness. The songs are songs, but they go against the antithesis of song because they are always blasted by extreme contrasts, sometimes in an erudite way and sometimes in a crazy way. (8/10) Favourite Songs: Where Is My Mind, Gigantic, Bone Machine

-Biased because I'm a fan of Pixies and this album -Its just fun and makes me wanna move -Favourite songs are Break My Body, Gigantic, Where Is My Mind, Brick Is Red

Very cool album! Love how raucous, stompy and fun it is - definitely laid the way for lots of bands after them - mad me think lots of Arcade Fire. Feels very foundational and exciting - NICE

If I was a rose I wouldn't be surfing, that sounds scary!

Really just a tight record.

A lot more cohesive of a sound than the last Pixies album I got. A great idea of indie punk, and just some raw, primal sound throughout.

¡Vamos a jugar por la playa!

this is so cool. Where Is My Mind was way ahead of its time

Have always liked the Pixies’ slight weirdness. Kim Deal’s vocals and bass surfs our ears into a better place. A few tracks are a miss

great album. old indie classic

Wasn't a fan of Bone Machine but after that the album was very solid. Loud grungy vibes, very 90s. Had only really heard Where Is My Mind before. Lots of energy, frantic guitars, fast loud drums, bet they have some rowdy live shows.

Kinda loud at times. I can't tell if I love it or hate it at times.

The Pixies' debut album took me by surprise. At first, I was turned off by the strange raunchy vocals, screaming, raw instrumentals and confusing lyrics. I found it hard to follow, to appreciate or to enjoy. Now, after listening to it a couple of times, I don't understand how I could misjudge it so poorly. Rarely have I found a record that combines such raw passion with catchy hooks. I especially appreciated this combination on Bone Machine, Break My Body, Broken Face, Gigantic and Where Is My Mind, Cactus, which are all now currently among my absolute favorites. The rest of the record is almost as impressive, though I sometimes have difficulty in enjoying the raunchiest and edgiest tracks (Something Against You and River Euphrates, filled with demonic screaming) but it's admittedly very hard to compete with the rest of Surfer Rosa. A 4/5 is my score.

4.5 for real

If you listen to this expecting more like Where Is My Mind, you will be confused I assume. Sort of feels like with Radiohead and Creep, where "that one song" clearly doesn't represent the rest of the band's work.

Some solid post-punk music, but I'm not sure I could delve too far into their sound without growing a bit tired of it. 8.0/10 Best Tracks: "Broken Face" "Where Is My Mind?"

This Siegerehrung ital began

Good album...not the most backgroundy for reading - not sure lyrically my style

This is clearly the forerunner of everything I loved about 90s grunge, and I should love it. 'Where Is My Mind' does a lot of the heavy lifting of the score here though. I do like it, I think perhaps I'm biased against it as it has been held up as a shining beacon of innovation that can do no wrong. That one song though might be worth a whole 5 on its own. So good.

Didn’t hear this first time round, introduced to them via the second album Doolittle. Sets the scene for what follows. Enjoyed the rawness with nice melodies weaved within. A solid debut.

First time listening to the full album and really enjoyed it. Unsurprising when you think of all the bands that they’ve clearly influenced. First album that we’ve done on AOTD which I’ll probably go back to and listen to again.

I really liked this album, to the point where I'm thinking I really should be a bigger Pixies fan than I am. I only know the hits... "Where Is My Mind?", "Debaser", "Monkey Gone To Heaven", "Here Comes Your Man", etc. I'll def give this album a few more listens and I've also revisited "Doolittle" which is also a cool album. 8/10

Great album. Can hear the influences they've had on other bands. Can't believe it's the first time I've listened to a Pixie's album. Kinda wish some of the tracks were longer.

Boobs in the cover. Cracking album.

Goeie cover.

Loved it crazy frenetic energy. where is my mind is such an incredible song

7/10. This is a solid album with a few standouts, and its clearly super influential to alt rock. Still, it had some really abrasive moments such as the last track that ended up just being uncomfortable to listen to rather than sounding cool.

Alright, nothing super special but sounded cool. 7

Where is my mind, Gigantic , Bone Machine

A fun listen but not something I'll return to very often. 7

8/10 rockero

Punk, garage, bestia

Chapeau! Mon hit: Where is my mind, le beat de guitare j'ai bien aimé.

Excellent album! Je ne connaissais pas Pixies au delà de la fameuse «Where is my mind».

Songs: Break my body, Gigantic, Brick is Red y obviamente Where is my mind? (Tururu tu turururu!!)

Awesome crunchy, gritty sound

Really fun and fresh. Not their best, but some strong songs

They had a different sound from what i expected from 'where is my mind'. Although it's my favorite song from the album, it doesn't speak for the sound of the album as a whole.

Better than I expected.

Rolas cargadas de lo-fi bien hecho y tener otro himno como Where is my mind?

When this first came out, I thought it sounded unpolished and too raw. I thought it was garbage. Little did I know how good garbage can be. I grew to love the album over time and the rawness. QuietLoud, baby!

Un classqiue des années 1990

Oke, I know this one. these dudes are crazy, love them.

Bone machine, where is my mind (classic) Not too bad!

A perfect connection point between post punk and new wave to the grunge and alt rock of the nineties. Super distinctive lead guitar and drums, and Kim’s voice is a perfect addition throughout. Obviously the singles are the best songs but even with all the experimentation the album sounds cohesive.

Where is my mind?

Classic.

EUPHRATES RIVER

“Where is my mind” one of the greatest needle drops in film history

Es gaidīju, ka man patiks vairāk – the things you own end up owning you

I want to rate this a 4 as I listened to this and Doolittle a lot in later high school, but I don’t know if I ever really truly loved the music or just wanted to love the music. Same situation here. Some of it is great, some is a bit much for my ears that tend towards softer melodies. High 3

Good thing it had where is my mind or it would have been very forgettable

I found myself enjoying this more than the often far more lauded 'Doolittle'; it's got a roughness that becomes quite appealing at times.

Good album cover. Some cringe. It's pretty good at times

Punk av tio

I do like a solid handful of Pixies songs and they had a groundbreaking sound at the time. "Where Is My Mind" is Alt Rock royalty for sure. I think they deserve ONE album in the Top 1001 and this is the one. They do NOT deserve 3 albums all released within 3 years - their sound didn't change, not one of those albums had a huge impact on the direction of music and really, not one of them produced a legitimate hit song outside of alternative rock radio. 3 albums in the T1001 puts them in the same tier as Nirvana, My Bloody Valentine (also FULLY not deserved), Prince, Beastie Boys, Black Sabbath, and Queen. Come on, really, what person off the street who knows anything about music would agree with that?! This album has some good songs but outside of "Where Is My Mind" (1.3B listens) there's no hits, no radio songs, no songs covered. It's an important release, they influenced a bunch of bands (you can hear White Stripes, Nirvana, Breeders, etc). 3 stars for one huge song, one impt album and influence

Delightfully weird and fun but I dont think id give it another listen. Some songs were a lot better than others. 3.5

Proto-grunge. Felt mostly like a sketchbook rather than fully realized. There's some decent stuff in here, but seems unfinished. There's some odd choices in the production and mix. It's not bad, but not something I'll be seeking out

Sort of a punk rock B-52’s dynamic (?) among M/F lead singers.

Pretty good

I know that not really liking Pixies considering early Sea Power’s heavy debt to their sound ('Broken Face' IS 'Favours in the Beetroot Field') is odd but i am so sensitive to vocals, and i just cant stand Black Francis’ voice (and BSP have a better ear for a suhweet melody and lyrics that appeal to my melodramatic English soul). Having said that, I have massively mellowed on them (probably thanks to my wife) and enjoyed this a million times more than in my early 20s.

Pixies' Surfer Rosa is a wild, unpredictable ride that showcases the band's signature dynamic shifts, though its inconsistent tracklist makes it a bit tricky to pin down. Fueled by raw, punkish energy, the album shines brightest on standout cuts like the infectious "Broken Face," the high-intensity "Something Against You," and the iconic, hypnotic "Where Is My Mind?" While it hits a few lulls with tracks that feel more like filler—like "Tony's Theme"—and features some eccentric vocal choices early on, its unique blend of abrasive noise and melodic hooks ultimately leaves a lasting impression. It’s an experimental foundational piece of alternative rock that, despite a few uneven moments, rewards repeated listens.

There were some unusual aspects, but overall, it felt ordinary.

Where is my mind is a banger… the rest of the album… kinda average. 3.2

This one was a bit disappointing. I knew (and love) “Where Is My Mind,” and so I was hoping the rest of the album would hit as well. Unfortunately it was a bit too noisy and timeless for me in general. But I can see why people like it. 6/10 Pretty Good

This is a solid rock punk alternative effort with a couple big songs on it. They keep it pretty simple and grungy.

Notables: - Where Is My Mind? - Tony's Theme

It was a solid album with some good songs. 6.4/10

Täitsa ebatavaline kõla 80ndate jaoks, siis oleks see kindlasti uudne olnud. Pole minu tassike teed, aga ma mõistan, kuidas see võis olla siis alt rock fännidele suur teema. Kuulsaim lugu "Where Is My Mind?" on minu jaoks üpriski ebameeldiv, aga vahepeal on teised lood huvitavate käikudega. 2.9/5

Surprised to have recognized Where Is My Mind?, the rest of the album kind of just existed.

I like to say I can listen to anything, but I could NOT stand bone machine

Kinda funky and impressed by some but the alt rock just isnt really for me.

210726 15:32 3.5

6/10 i dont remember how it was

Chaotic, but enjoyable.

was alright. where is my mind is a classic. a coupleof decent songs inthere but i really didn't like it as much as doolittle!

Where is my mind? Is a masterpiece, there rest is only OK for the most part. I have many friends that will be disappointed in my 3 star rating but c'est la vie. Maybe it'll take a few listens to get to know and enjoy more.

So I remembered I have listened to another Pixies album so far but I couldn’t remember what it was like. As soon as I put this one on I was like ahh yes… the noise. They just sound like straight up noise. I just don’t think their voice matches the hard style of their instrumentation. I did like one of the songs the woman sang but another one she sang I just thought was so bad. Maybe they just aren’t my cup of tea and I just don’t understand the appeal. The guitar and drumming was good and I wouldn’t call it a bad album but I also wasn’t too impressed either.

Pretty good

Could have been a 4 since I liked the more punk-ish songs. But most of them are mediocre unluckily, not even "Where Is My Mind" could push it above 3.5 :c

This is a crazy one. I will have to give it a relisten to really give a meaningful review.

Having listened to this now, the influence it had on In Utero is unmistakable. The drumming throughout is superb, and there are a couple of complete bangers on here. However, everything got kind of forgettable in the second half of the album, and for that my rating can't be too high (especially knowing that Doolittle is coming in the future of Pixies discography, where I feel they really hit their stride). Favorite tracks: Break My Body, Where Is My Mind?

I like Doolittle better.

apart form where is my mind, kinda weird, didnt fw it

Where is my mind y gigantic, la primera en otro nivel.

Alright. Bit fun in places, not bad.

not bad, kicked off the nirvana craze

This was alright. I had heard "Where is My Mind?" prior to listening to this album - I feel like it was a highlight compared to the rest of the songs here. The rest were okay to listen to. A lot of this sounded like a garage jam session.

I like the short burst high energy songs. (Couldn't handle too much of it if they were neverending). Some of the lyrics questionable in this day and age but expected from punk bands, right?

Late start today, idk The Pixies at all. Titties! Bone Machine is fun but I'm not big on the absurd lyrics. Guitar sounds great, drums too. Why do they keep singing about Bones. I like the vocals in Break My Body, especially the hook. Something Against You was a bit much, but not bad. A lot of the album isn't sticking out to me, but it's solid. Gigantic - I like the girl's voice more! This one is nice, I could tell it was a single. River Euphrates is ok.. I can't decide if I like the hook or not. Band is on point. Oh fuck this song is on this album??? Okay well I knew ONE Pixies song leading in. Where Is My Mind is great. I like Cactus a lot. Good lyrics. The drums are very punchy on this album! Not a fan of Oh My Golly. Too much going on. Oh of course Albini produced this shit. I just got home, I'm crossed, I picked back up on Vamos... and the guitar is pissing me the fuck off it sounds like a bug in my ear when it does that thing it keeps doing. Stop it! Ok they kinda did and the rest is interesting. Didn't really do much for me; I won't deny that it's good, but it's just not quite what I'd like from this style of music. Too much! Favorite: Brick Is Red Shoutout: I'm Amazed, Break My Body Coming back to give it a 3, it was a lot more fun in the car.

High highs but low lows

perfect for day drinking on rilke (Duino, TS) even though where is my mind might make you want to jump off the cliff to experience the freedom of the fall

Not for me; Where Is My Mind single handedly raises album from 2 to 3.

It was ok. I was really hoping for a good album out of these guys

good listen, pitty the lead singer is a twat.

Interesting tunes, thx

Surfer Rosa, the Pixies’ debut album, is a deceptively good album and my introduction to a band that significantly influenced many great artists who came after them. Famous for its then-groundbreaking production and unique raw approach to rock, the album consistently sounds unpolished, noisy, and messy—all compliments. The album grew on me over the course of listening to it, what at first sounded like just-okay screechy rock gaining my appreciation after the first few tracks for the innovative predecessor to grunge and other 90’s alternative rock movements that it is, followed by my enjoyment by the end of the album for its abrasive catchiness. The album’s somehow both off-putting and humorous lyrics, also apparently part of what made them so innovative, stand out as another interesting feature. ‘Bone Machine,’ the opener, starts us off strong lyrically with key moments including references to cuckoldry, being molested by priests, and the questionable “Your Irish skin / Looks Mexican / Our love is rice and beans and horse’s lard.” This decent enough opening track introduced the album’s sound, but the best of it comes in the second half. No single song stands out to me in particular, except for the accessibly catchy, famous, and very good ‘Where Is My Mind?’ The album is fairly consistent from song to song, gradually rising in quality as it progresses. Moments that let Steve Albini’s experimental, rough production and Black Francis’s almost rabid vocals take off unrestrained are where this album shines brightest. This was a worthwhile and pretty enjoyable listen, and the Pixies have gained my appreciation for it. Rating: ~5.5 ____ Album 7 / 1001+

3/5 I almost rated this a four, but ultimately this album is not the type of music I typically enjoy. This is defintely a "raw" album with some interesting rhytmic ideas and intersting guitar tones. I enjoyed the driving bass and drum fills (even though I got a little bored at some points). This album has a lot of catchy hooks as well and I appreciate the experimenation. Bone Machine 3/5: Some weird lyrics, "Are love is rice and beans and horses lard" A decent song with a simple driving bass line and chord progression Break My Body 3.5/5: This song is a little dissonant at times which I like. The melody and guitar together clash a bit which makes sense for the song. Something Against You 3.25/5: Intresting intremental tracks with some weird shouting in the background that are cool. The drum fills are really good Broken Face 3.25/5: The broken face hook is kinda funny and catchy, quick fun song Gigantic 3.75/5: This song has a catchy hook and I like how the verse is more chill and builds to the chorus. I think the end of the song could have been cut short, the same thing is just being repeated over and over again with no variation River Euphrates 3.75/5: Cool echoey guitars to this song. The bass lines are starting to get boring in this album I wish they were more varied. Intersting time signature Where Is My Mind 4.5/5: Very famous song, the guitar riff is so memorable Cactus 3.5/5: Very interesting rhythm, the time signautre unexpectedly changed, not too much else going on though Tony's Theme 2.5/5: The vocals were different.... kind of an annoying song, but when Tony is shouted it is catchy I can't lie. Oh My Golly! 3/5: This song has great drum fills and fun fast guitar strumming, but nothing too different from the rest of the album. The end of the song was pretty funny Vamos (Surfa Rosa) 3.5/5: It is interesting how the tempo changes in this song, creates an interesting feeling especially with all those intereseting guitar tones. Not exactly sure the meaning of this song... I'm Amazed 2/5: I am really not sure what the point of this song is... it was interesting how the conversation transitioned into the song Brick Is Red 3/5: Pretty cool riff and I like the pauses in this song. Not really a fan of the guitar tone.

I would have loved this album of I heard it at the time, the opening bass is sublime.

Bone machine - 3/5 Break my body - 3/5 Something against you - 2/5 Broken face - 2/5 Gigantic - 3/5 River Euphrates - 4/5 Where is my mind? - 5/5 Cactus - 3/5 Tony's theme - 2/5 Oh my golly - 2/5 Vamos - 1/5 I'm amazed - 1/5 Brick is red - 2/5

2 utterly classic songs, a winning musical formula and the best possible producer at this point in their career, but Surfer Rosa doesn't really cohere. The songwriting is too tossed off. Everything would fall in to place on Doolittle.

I find Surfer Rosa is a handful of highs and a large amount of meh. It's possibly my least favourite Pixies album despite having a couple of their best songs on it. Whilst it's hard to deny the brilliance of Where Is My Mind? or the infectiously hooky Gigantic or even the unhinged craziness of Bone Machine, most of the rest for it is a choppy mess of songs that I've always struggled with and don't quite live up to the same benchmark.

Sick 80’s grunge/punk! It’s crazy how you can really hear this album in so many artists today! Really cool, inspiring and experimental. Definitely one of the best 80’s albums ever maybe even rock albums ever. It has a pretty weak intro but really great in the middle! I’d recommend Gigantic, River Euphrates, Where is my mind?, Cactus, Tony’s theme and Brick is red

May hits I'll listen to again, gigantic, river Euphrates, didn't realize where is my mind was on this album, brick is red 6/10

it’s fine

doolittle is better BUT, this is still pretty good too (where is my mind? is one of the best song ever written)

I looove Doolittle, and gave Bossanova 4 stars, but I think this is my least favourite Pixies album on this list. "Where Is My Mind" and "Gigantic" are the clear standouts, but the other songs on this album are not on the same level. I think manic would be a good description of this album.

Good Listen. This album has that song from Fight Club on it so that's fun.

Where is my mind?- what a song. Not sure abt the others though...

I liked it! Not as much as i thought though…..maybe 3.5. I wanted more alt

Unfortunately this review is going to be tainted by having a Frank Black solo album yesterday as his works become tedious and repetitive to me usually about halfway through an album. That is definitely the case with this album. I acknowledge the influential span this has/had on an entire music scene. That being said... save for a chorus here and there or an iconic bit here and there or (rarely) a complete song here and there I don't ever purposely listen to the Pixies. In fact the more time that passes in between listens the more I can actually appreciate them. This album much like their entire discography has 2 good songs and bits and pieces here and there of good stuff but as a whole its a mess. Granted being a mess is what is intended here. 3 stars simply because Where is My Mind is on this saving it from being a 2.25.

Entre le 3 et le 4

i was kinda like yeah okay cool then where is my mind came on and YEEEEAAAAHH NOW WE’RE COOKIN

Decent

I really like this one. Need to come to this

An interesting, creative, dynamic album -- just not sure I'd listen to it again.

It was ok 3/5

My rating 3.2 Besides where is my mind what do you really have. Heavily liked by critics. 🤷‍♂️

Yeah it’s got that one song, but it’s not an album that has the highlight in spite of That One Song

3 stars for me, some good songs but may need to spend some more time with it

Where is my mind is a song on another level. The rest of the album is something between cool stuff and boring noise

An example of a few truly great songs carrying a just fine album

I chose a moderate rating because it is not my type of music. The musicians are talented and it likely is appealing to people that enjoy the genre.

Some good. Some annoying. Some great.

I preferred this to Bossa Nova but still not seeing what everyone else does when they listen to Pixies.

frank or black francis or whatever he calls himself and kim wear out their welcome by tony's theme. the lead guitarist can stay. he good throughout. bossanova supremacy.

Favorite track(s): Bone Machine, Broken Face, Gigantic, Where Is My Mind?

6 - AVERAGE

more of a doolittle girl myself i was gonna listen twice searching for meaning but idc today

3. I was a bigger fan of this album than I anticipated. Where Is My Mind is an obvious classic, but I was also very into Gigantic. The drums were my favorite part of this album, staying a consistent driving force throughout the stop-start style that is synonymous with The Pixies. Some of the vocals had me questioning meaning, but I reckon that was what they were going for in a way. The speaking bits were also tastefully included, besides maybe the whole "You fucking die" part. I thought it was spot on in "I'm Amazed." I think with another listen I would like it even more. Another thing I really enjoyed with this album was finding the influence. I had heard that they were one of the the more influential bands of the 80s, but listening to Surfer Rosa I was able to find this to be true. To name one, I found my favorite Silver Jews album - Across the Water - to be reminiscent of a lot of these songs. Fun.

Kind of strange and off tune sounding in an on-purpose way. Not bad!

A solid 7/10. This is Pixies’ punk side, and their style is really clear all over the album. And of course, it has one of the anthems of a generation: “Where Is My Mind?” A solid album with some really strong moments.

Didn't love it but it was ok

Cool album to mosh to

doggo/10

Ehh didn’t get to listen to the whole thing

This was weird as fuck, but kind of in a good way? Just short enough to not get grating. But a lot of it was pretty silly. (Where Is My Mind did a lot of heavy lifting)

It’s a little weird but also a classic alt-rock album that influenced what we have today. It stands the test of time, even if I don’t love every song.

Decent enough - kind of passed me by, but Where is my mind in particular is a classic

Where is my Mind? was definitely the standout and the one song I'd go back for. Enjoyed a couple others like Tony's Theme and Gigantic but not an album I'd revisit on the whole.

Lo escuché mientras me depilaba las cejas

53/100.

Made me realise how good Doolittle is.

Kind of annoying and whiny, but it does grow on you a little with some re-listens. Overall, doesn’t live up to the hype. Likes: Gigantic; River Euphrates; Where Is My Mind?

The punkishness is rad, and obviously I love Where is my Mind. But the rest was rather ho-hum for me.

Has plenty of solid songs, but has plenty of songs that don't have much to them. Middle of the road album to me.

Disjointed and chaotic, but that's kind of the point. Mostly impressed with how it sounds like could have been made today.

Good memories of this album - I was surprised in came out in the 80s. Definitively thought it was a 90s album

There’s some fun stuff here, but I will admit I’m getting tired of the angsty 90’s core screaming and whining. When the pixies are on, they are so lit. But sometimes they drift into this sludgy vibe I just don’t know how to put my finger on it. Broken Face gives me mad surf curse vibes. I fuck with it. Other saves: Gigantic, Cactus

I like the coolness of the punk but not always the musicality of it. But "Where is my mind" incredible of course!

No song lives up to how good where is my mind? Is, but overall pretty interesting. I can see it growing on me over time. 7/10

I liked the experimentation with sounds while keeping the music coherent. But this suffers like a lot of albums, where there is a well known iconic song. When I got to it, it just took me out of the album ad a whole and the other songs felt weaker in comparison.

None of the songs stood out to me. Maybe I will enjoy this album in the future when I am more mature

Everyone’s heard Where is My Mind? 6/10

Interesting album; not too much my style but laid the foundation for future music. Very good instrumentals, interesting vocals. Imo: overhyped but decent framework

Good album, I only really liked the first 5 songs, doesn’t deserve a 4 though

If it was 1-10 i would give it a solid 6 or 7 (chills) where is my mind carries the album but the rest aint bad

Not my favorite pixies album. I feel like they are at their best when they aren’t doing super heavy songs. This album had a lot of those heavier songs which I think takes away from the overall quality. Gigantic and where is my mind are classics though

I desperately want to love the Pixies (mainly because of their influence on some of my favourite bands) but I really can't get into them. I think the instrumentals are great but the voices are just so lacking in both lyricism and honestly just sounding nice to my ears. However, given that Where Is My Mind is on this album there's no way I could give it anything lower than a 3, that song is everything.

Not my cup of tea, first songs were a hard listen, then where is my mind started

Hard to not picture a bunch of dead eyed Gen X’s slouching and shuffling on a dance floor when listening to this album. Overall it’s serviceable but not really for me. Gigantic and Where Is My Mind were enjoyable and clearly the singles. I get why disillusioned youths would love this one. Plus there’s a nice set of yabbos on the cover so that earns it an extra star. Way to go Pixies!

Very raw, chaotic and unpolished. In a good and bad way.
