MANIFEST: Very tired of listening to so many rap albums among the 1001 most important albums in history!!! 🤦🏽 If I want to do the challenge and not give up, I'm going to have to abandon this style. METHOD: I will listen to 2 songs from the album suggested. If the album is rap or hip hop that is not very melodic or harmonious, I will listen the list of the author's 5 most listened to songs. Sorry, it's the exception I have to make about of so much snobbery on the part of critics... Rap is a respectable cultural artistic expression, with melodic winks, rhyme and very very standard rhythm, but it is not music! 😘

More Rap?

I see Nas all the time on Rate Your Music. I'm genuinely not big on hip hop, but 1001 Albums has spoken :] ── ࣪˖ ࣪ ⊹ ࣪ ˖ ── Gah. "Illmatic" was an overall super obnoxious album. The production was repetitive, there was a use of slurs Nas can't claim, and the album was lacking dynamically and musically. Compared to something like Kanye’s "MBDTF" or Tyler’s "IGOR," which balance strong beats emotional texture, Illmatic felt extremely one-note. I think Nas was trying too hard to appear "gangsta."

Just not my jam.

I wound up FFing through this one. I just don’t get it. Nothing redeeming or even remotely listenable about it for me. I understand rap is a valid art form but try as I may, I just can’t find a handle or route into this kind of rap.

Wasn't this a really big deal when it came out? I remember seeing this album cover everywhere. It's really boring! I didn't like anything about it. N-word this and N-word that, gnomesayin, guns, drugs, the usual, but the rapping itself was just blah. Once again, an album not meant for me.

As far as rap goes, this is decent and I can see what people like about it. It's still not my thing and I did not enjoy it.
