I enjoyed a bit of it, maybe it's just not my usual thing to listen to but I am glad I listened to it. It has a strong feel to it and it reminded me of street fighter 3rd strike music. Life's a bitch and then you die!! 3.9/10

This is pretty much unlistenable for me. If I could give it a 0 I probably would. The only redeeming quality is that the guy has an unbelievable gift of rhyming. Very talented there.

This may or may not be a great rap album. Unfortunately I'm supremely unqualified to make any kind of judgement about that. So my score is purely based on the strength of my urge to turn it off.

It's always funny reading the reviews before I listen to these highly rated hip hop albums. Every time I think, 'wow maybe this will be the one that changes my mind about hip hop'. And yeah never once has that ever even come close. Same with this one. It's more of the same: repetitive, needlessly violent, misogynistic (though not as bad as some), offensive, bad music. I always appreciate the social/racial commentary but the method of delivery is just so bad. 1.5/5

Rap finally got me. OK the only thing I really know about Nas is 'If I Ruled The World' and that he is generally fairly critically acclaimed. Sorry, I may not exactly be the target demographic here but I found this pretty atrocious. I listened to it right through and nothing stood out. I assume it's supposed to be edgy, but just seemed a big whine to me. Avoid.

This is some 90s OG gangsta rap. While I admire rap as a skill, I hate gang culture. So, nah.

When I saw the parental advisory label on the front I somehow knew what expect and it didn't fail to deliver. Lots of swearing and use of the dreaded 'n' word which only a certain demographic can use. Sounded exactly like every album of its genre. Would have given it a zero but will have to settle for a one.

Happened to be on my morning walk when I decided to give this a listen. Had no idea from title, artist name or album cover what I was letting myself in for. Thought it might be some traditional African folk music or rather hoping it was instead of this rap crap. What a disappointment. Stayed with it as long as I could but it was spoiling my walk in the Countryside. So eventually retuned Spotify to my weekly discovery (lossless now yay!) and calmed my self down with some beautiful neo-prog. 1/5 1/10/25

I get that this is an expression of someone’s lived inner city experience. Consequently I do not relate to this “music”. I have a hard time calling it music when there are no musicians of any tangible instruments. I find this grotesque and dark dominated by youthful arrogance.

I really don't understand what this album is doing in this list. It's utterly boring. Most songs are based on one - sometimes rather okay - sample and that's repeated for the entire length of the song. The scratching isn't original and becomes really boring. That's what this album is: boring. Utterly boring. Listen to 'N.Y. State of mind'. Hee, that piano sounds okay. It's repeated, unchanged, maybe forty times or so? The only song that I like a bit better is 'Represent'. But "like" is very very relative.

Another '90s hip-hop. Same shit different.... nope.... it's all the same. I used to hear this coming out of people's cars and wondered if it was one song. Then I thought I'd hear the nuances when I listened to different albums. Nope! Identikit crap.

Will probably stay as the most overrated album of all time for me. I really tried to give it a chance cause of the hype. But aside from the first listen I did while playing a game and not paying much attention, I couldn't get through it. It's so fucking boring and uninspired. The production is shit, the lyrics are shit. I'll never understand

Not my cup of tea. I am not too much into hip-hop, apart from some exceptions, and this album is not one of them. Music-wise very boring and as I am not a native speaker, the lyrics (which are supposed to be very good) don’t make up for the missing variety in the music.

I see Nas all the time on Rate Your Music. I'm genuinely not big on hip hop, but 1001 Albums has spoken :] ── ࣪˖ ࣪ ⊹ ࣪ ˖ ── Gah. "Illmatic" was an overall super obnoxious album. The production was repetitive, there was a use of slurs Nas can't claim, and the album was lacking dynamically and musically. Compared to something like Kanye’s "MBDTF" or Tyler’s "IGOR," which balance strong beats emotional texture, Illmatic felt extremely one-note. I think Nas was trying too hard to appear "gangsta."

Wasn't this a really big deal when it came out? I remember seeing this album cover everywhere. It's really boring! I didn't like anything about it. N-word this and N-word that, gnomesayin, guns, drugs, the usual, but the rapping itself was just blah. Once again, an album not meant for me.
