Popular Reviews

At Fillmore East by The Allman Brothers Band

A classic. 6 songs over 2 records. The genesis of jam band records?

Led Zeppelin by Led Zeppelin

One of the greatest Debut records ever

Either Or by Elliott Smith

A talented artist who left us way to soon. Enjoyed the listen

Dylan's transition from folk. Side 1 is stream of consciousness Bob blowing his harp and spitting lines with a ramshackle jalopy of a band chugging along behind him. Side 2 more traditional acoustic folk songs. Subterranean Homesick Blues and Mr Tambourine Man are worth the price of admission

Here's Little Richard by Little Richard

Part of the origin story of Rock and Roll. Fantastic stuff

The Wildest! by Louis Prima
May 23 2024

Never listened to Louis before but know many of these songs. Super fun record in the spirit of a Louis Jordan record with some great singing and playing.

Couldn't understand a word of it but it's funky as hell

The Chronic by Dr. Dre
May 27 2024

A definitive classic

Let's Get It On by Marvin Gaye
May 28 2024

A generational talent. That being said his music just doesn't appeal to me that much 🤷‍♂️

The Score by Fugees
May 29 2024

A good listen. Worth it just for the "Newt Gingrich sucks dick" lyric

The Stone Roses by The Stone Roses
Jun 03 2024

Very solid record. I was prepared to be "meh" but I enjoyed. Even heard some hints of jangle pop in there

Iron Maiden by Iron Maiden
Jun 04 2024

I'm sure it's good but just don't love metal

Legalize It by Peter Tosh
Jun 05 2024

Great listen. Really grew on me as it went along

Moving Pictures by Rush
Jun 06 2024

Incredibly skilled musicians with fervent fans. That being said I have never cared much for their music. Most of the tunes sound remarkably similar to me. I did like the instrumental track and Limelight

Diamond Life by Sade
Jun 07 2024

Well crafted pop music. Just not my thing

Violent Femmes by Violent Femmes
Jun 10 2024

A classic. Saw them in a ballroom with about 500 people circa 1986

Jun 11 2024

A talented artist who left us way to soon. Enjoyed the listen

1984 by Van Halen
Jun 12 2024

Their first album was ok after that meh...

Moving Pictures by Rush
Jun 18 2024

Talented band with dedicated fans just not my thing. I liked the instrumental and Limelight though

The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails
Jun 19 2024

It was ok not especially musical. Enjoyed it more as it went on

Dirty by Sonic Youth
Jul 03 2024

Musicians are talented and it's ok just not my cup of tea

Aqualung by Jethro Tull
Jul 04 2024

Of course I've heard the song Aqualung before but not the album. I didn't expect a lot out of this but it wasn't what I expected and I enjoyed it

Blood And Chocolate by Elvis Costello & The Attractions

Not even close to EC's best record but still very good.

Machine Head by Deep Purple
Jul 11 2024

Not my genre but a pretty good record with a handful of really stand out tunes

Doolittle by Pixies
Jul 15 2024

A classic that was ahead of it's time. The dynamics changes were a big influence on Nirvana. Here Comes my Man is one of my favorites

Hot Rats by Frank Zappa
Jul 16 2024

Zappa with a guest appearance by Captain Beefheart, just as weird as you might imagine. The band is good and Zappa is an extraordinary guitar player

Madman Across The Water by Elton John
Jul 18 2024

Pretty good Elton John record but not his best. Levon is my favorite EJ song

Jul 19 2024

I don't listen to early Chicago much mostly based on the schmaltz they released late in their career but this is good stuff. Some good songs, some GREAT horns (take that Courtney Love) and weird blues jams out of nowhere

Californication by Red Hot Chili Peppers
Jul 22 2024

Not a bad record just not my thing

Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel
Jul 23 2024

Good record. BOTW, Cecelia and the Boxer are some of the better songs ever recorded. The rest of the album is good with varying musical styles

Life's Too Good by The Sugarcubes
Jul 24 2024

I didn't enjoy it. I listened to the first several songs then checked out

Be by Common
Jul 25 2024

It was good, some would say (un)Common(ly) good

Nothing's Shocking by Jane's Addiction
Jul 26 2024

The instrumentation was ok the vocals weren't great.

Led Zeppelin II by Led Zeppelin
Jul 29 2024

A fantastic record. Every track is a classic rock staple.

This Year's Model by Elvis Costello & The Attractions
Jul 31 2024

Elvis prototypical angry young man record, he practically spits some of these songs. He was considered "punk" by some when he came on the scene that was based more on the attitude than the music. Top 3 EC record for me

A Hard Day's Night by Beatles
Aug 01 2024

When they were Fab. Not my go to Beatles record but it's really good. Lot's of great harmonies and George guitar work

Mama's Gun by Erykah Badu
Aug 02 2024

Nice mellow vibe

The Score by Fugees
Aug 06 2024

Nice record

Nirvanas response to the more polished sound of Nevermind

Cisco Kid is a great tune. The rest of it was not notable but not terrible

I like Rooster but the rest is pretty repetitive

Fantastic record. Stevie Wonder is a man of immense talents.

I had not listened to this one before. Good record

Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division
Aug 20 2024

Never been a fan but it wasn't terrible

Meat Is Murder by The Smiths
Aug 21 2024

I've always been a little ambivalent about the Smith's but I followed along with the lyrics on this one and I enjoyed much more. I am still a devout carnivore

Blur by Blur
Aug 22 2024

Pretty standard Brit Rock. Not terrible

Entertainment by Gang Of Four
Aug 23 2024

Great record! Listened to this one 100's of times in college. Some of the best punk bass playing ever!

Led Zeppelin by Led Zeppelin
Aug 26 2024

One of the greatest Debut records ever

If You Can Believe Your Eyes & Ears by The Mamas & The Papas
Aug 27 2024

Incredibly dysfunctional as individuals incredibly harmonius as a group. Nice record probably 3.5 stars

Celebrity Skin by Hole
Aug 29 2024

Gonna be honest I liked this a lot more than I anticipated. She reminds me of Liz Phair who I like

Maggot Brain by Funkadelic
Sep 02 2024

Strangely enough I have never listened to this record. Not what I expected but not bad

All Things Must Pass by George Harrison
Sep 03 2024

Good stuff. Length is a little excessive but a wonderful record

At San Quentin by Johnny Cash
Sep 04 2024

A classic. Interesting to hear Cash interact with his audience

Chirping Crickets by Buddy Holly & The Crickets
Sep 05 2024

The only full album released with the Crickets in Holly's lifetime. The stuff legends are made of. A couple of the songs leaned a little too close to Do Wop otherwise I would have given it 5 stars

Legalize It by Peter Tosh
Sep 06 2024

Pretty standard reggae beautifully done

British Steel by Judas Priest
Sep 09 2024

Listened to the 1st 3 songs then moved on to the Clash. Not my thing

Cosmo's Factory by Creedence Clearwater Revival
Sep 10 2024

Great record! The first song keeps it from being a 5 for me. Probably should be 4.5 stars

Sep 12 2024

Good record. The rawness of the lyrics made it a bit disconcerting for me but some wonderful tunes on it. Probably 4.5

My Aim Is True by Elvis Costello
Sep 16 2024

One of the all time great debuts. Alison alone is worth the price of admission

Different Class by Pulp
Sep 17 2024

I only had time to listen to the first few songs. It was ok

Ten by Pearl Jam
Sep 18 2024

Never been a Pearl Jam hater but don't really seek them out either. This is a good record though

Talking Heads 77 by Talking Heads
Sep 20 2024

The Heads debut. Doesn't have the "hits" other than Psycho Killer but still a good record

Deja Vu by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Sep 23 2024

Some of the greatest harmonies ever put on record

The Genius Of Ray Charles by Ray Charles
Sep 24 2024

The big band sounds of Brother Ray! The guy can play anything. Outstanding

Deep Purple In Rock by Deep Purple
Sep 27 2024

Unremarkable. This is the 2nd Deep Purple record on this list I'm not sure their catalog merits the inclusion of 2 records

Buena Vista Social Club by Buena Vista Social Club
Sep 30 2024

I don't usually enjoy records if I don't understand the lyrics but this is a beautiful record

xx by The xx
Oct 01 2024

I didn't have high expectations for this one but it was engaging enough that I listened to the whole record. Not terrible

Kid A by Radiohead
Oct 04 2024

I general I like Radiohead. This one didn't do much for me. Very atmospheric

Oct 07 2024

Unplugged to say the least. Great mix of covers and originals. Contains the best version of Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World"

We Are Family by Sister Sledge
Oct 08 2024

Music of a time and place. Very well done but not my thing

Too Rye Ay by Dexys Midnight Runners
Oct 09 2024

It's interesting I remember listening to this record a few times when it came out and not being enamored with it (other than Come On Eileen) but it's a fun well made record

Heartattack And Vine by Tom Waits
Oct 10 2024

Not the Tom Waits catalog selection I would have went with. Tom is an acquired taste but still some very good songs here

Underwater Moonlight by The Soft Boys
Oct 11 2024

I like it. I've never listened before but I'll probably come back

Live! by Fela Kuti
Oct 14 2024

This was good I'll probably listen again. You can hear the origins of the New Orleans sound

Miriam Makeba by Miriam Makeba
Oct 16 2024

She's obviously a very talented vocalist. For whatever reason I just wasn't feeling it today

I Am a Bird Now by Antony and the Johnsons
Oct 17 2024

Not sure how I would describe the music. It wasn't great but it wasn't terrible

At Fillmore East by The Allman Brothers Band
Oct 22 2024

A classic. 6 songs over 2 records. The genesis of jam band records?

Apocalypse Dudes by Turbonegro
Oct 23 2024

Kind of like 80's Hair Metal meets the Ramones and not in a good way. Lost interest after a few songs

Nixon by Lambchop
Oct 24 2024

I remember when this came out there was a lot of hubub about it amongst the Americana crowd. I had never listened to it. It was just ok

The Blueprint by JAY Z
Oct 25 2024

Not a big fan of Jay as a person but this isn't a bad record. Fairly melodic for a rap record

Tracy Chapman by Tracy Chapman
Oct 29 2024

I was taken aback when Fast Car came out by how unique and good that song was but never listened to the album. This is a good record. Has a social conscience without being preachy

Pump by Aerosmith
Oct 30 2024

It's probably good if you are into that kind of thing

Tusk by Fleetwood Mac
Oct 31 2024

An overreach by the Mac at the height of their massive popularity. Maybe their 3rd or 4th best album. Still some good work here

Savane by Ali Farka Touré
Nov 01 2024

Sometimes the music transcends the language barrier. Good stuff

Music From Big Pink by The Band
Nov 04 2024

Ground zero for Americana. I forget this is a debut album. Wonderful

The Next Day by David Bowie
Nov 05 2024

Interesting catalog choice. Bowie can be a little quirky but this is a nice record

Pink Moon by Nick Drake
Nov 06 2024

Nick Drake is a bit of an acquired taste but I've been listening to his work for some time. Some good songs here and guitar playing that verges on acoustic blues at times. Very nice record.

L.A. Woman by The Doors
Nov 08 2024

The last Doors record as far as I'm concerned. Morrison's voice is reduced to a growl for a lot of this record. Lots of great songs on here (the title track is my favorite Doors song) and some mehh songs. Still a great record

Lost In The Dream by The War On Drugs
Nov 11 2024

Not a bad record. Not much differentiation between songs but they have a nice sound

Nov 12 2024

Aretha's first record on Atlantic and it changed the trajectory of her career. Great record! Probably my favorite female singer

Grace by Jeff Buckley
Nov 13 2024

Been a fan of this record for a long time

Nov 14 2024

One classic after another, many of these songs were overplayed on AOR radio when I was younger but still great tunes. Kind of forget that this was a debut record and it also essentially started the southern rock genre

Bat Out Of Hell by Meat Loaf
Nov 15 2024

I've met Mr Loaf but have never been enamored with his records. I wasn't excited for this one but it wasn't bad. It's music of a time and place that can take you back to that place which is one of the important things I ask music to do. I was going to go 2.5 but I'll give it a three

Blue Lines by Massive Attack
Nov 18 2024

Better than I anticipated. I would give it 2.5 stars

Figure 8 by Elliott Smith
Nov 19 2024

I've listened to X/O but never this one. He was a talented and troubled young man. A pop sheen over depressing lyrics. A good record

Superunknown by Soundgarden
Nov 21 2024

Not the kind of music I seek out it's a little muddy for me (I know it's grunge). But it's really well done Chris Cornell's vocals are perfect for this kind of music and he's really good. Enjoyed it

Bongo Rock by Incredible Bongo Band
Nov 22 2024

A little bit of that goes a long way.

Paul Simon by Paul Simon
Nov 25 2024

I like Paul Simon but I don't love him. This is a nice album though

Arrival by ABBA
Nov 26 2024

Well done pop music but they have never really appealed to me

To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar
Nov 27 2024

Pretty good as far as rap records go. I listened to the whole thing

Highway to Hell by AC/DC
Nov 28 2024

This was great. If I didn't know better I would have thought I was at a keg party circa 1982. Really fun listen

Eliminator by ZZ Top
Nov 29 2024

One of my first records was ZZ Tops 1977 greatest hits album. Funky, greasy blues rock. Not monumental but good stuff. This record is blues based pop that feels like it was run through a 1980's computer. A few catchy tunes and MTV made this record huge but I don't find it appealing even as a period piece

Birth Of The Cool by Miles Davis
Dec 02 2024

Been listening to this one for years. Great record!

Dec 03 2024

I know people who's musical opinion i respect that consider this not only the best prog rock record but also one of the all time best records in general. That being the case I learned here that prog rock definitely doesn't do much for me.

Happy Trails by Quicksilver Messenger Service
Dec 04 2024

Turns out I like excessively long jam band freakouts better than I like excessively long prog rock tunes. Not bad if you're into that sort of thing.

Bookends by Simon & Garfunkel
Dec 05 2024

Of the multitude of Paul Simon selections I probably liked this one best

Car Wheels On A Gravel Road by Lucinda Williams
Dec 06 2024

This is one of the records that set me on the Americana path. It checks all the boxes, the songs, the singing, musicians, the attention to detail in the production is incredible. Easily in my top 100 records. Also includes maybe the greatest song ever about female masturbation

The Doors by The Doors
Dec 09 2024

All the Doors haters can pound sand this is a great record

Moondance by Van Morrison
Dec 10 2024

Classic! Every song is a gem. Lots of good memories chilling with friends listening to this record in college

Head Hunters by Herbie Hancock
Dec 11 2024

FUNKY!! Enjoyed

Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys
Dec 12 2024

I was slow to come around to this one just like critics and fans when it was originally released. It was a revelation at the time it was released. Good record

Superfuzz Bigmuff by Mudhoney
Dec 13 2024

The first grunge band? Noisy, grungey and still slightly melodic. I liked

Dec 16 2024

Regarded as one of the all time best live albums by many. You can't argue with the Hardest Working Man in Showbusiness!!

Dec 17 2024

Dylan's transition from folk. Side 1 is stream of consciousness Bob blowing his harp and spitting lines with a ramshackle jalopy of a band chugging along behind him. Side 2 more traditional acoustic folk songs. Subterranean Homesick Blues and Mr Tambourine Man are worth the price of admission

Sound Affects by The Jam
Dec 18 2024

Really good 80's English punk record. Is it punk? I guess that's how I think of The Jam. "That's Entertainment" has always been a favorite

Fear Of A Black Planet by Public Enemy
Dec 19 2024

A game show? A reality TV show? An album? Yes it wasn't bad

Exile On Main Street by The Rolling Stones
Dec 20 2024

A masterpiece. Most regard this as the Stones best record. I'm not sure on that but if I could only keep one Stones record it would be this one because of the depth and breadth of it

Brutal Youth by Elvis Costello
Dec 27 2024

Probably not in my top 10 EC albums. Pretty standard fair but EC is always interesting

Tres Hombres by ZZ Top
Dec 30 2024

I like the early ZZ Top before they became a caricature of themselves. Greazzy Texas blues good stuff

Achtung Baby by U2
Dec 31 2024

This record was a game changer for U2. Great song after great song. "One" is always a gut wrencher for me

Sister by Sonic Youth
Jan 01 2025

I anticipated straight up noise but there were some tunes underneath the layers of grunge. Not bad

Lady In Satin by Billie Holiday
Jan 03 2025

At the end of her life and career. Her voice showing signs of a hard life. Still beautiful. Terrible what was done to Billie just for singing a song about racists

Red Headed Stranger by Willie Nelson
Jan 07 2025

Not a big fan of concept albums but it's Willie so the playing and singing are wonderful

Jan 08 2025

This would be ok if I was sitting at a beach 🏖️ bar drinking a tropical drink but otherwise I didn't really feel it

Want One by Rufus Wainwright
Jan 10 2025

Some grandiose arrangements. I like Rufus's voice but the songs weren't especially captivating

Five Leaves Left by Nick Drake
Jan 14 2025

This is a great debut record. Time Has Told Me is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard

Stephen Stills by Stephen Stills
Jan 15 2025

Stephen Stills is a very talented musician. Nothing monumental here but a nice record

Sulk by The Associates
Jan 16 2025

I'm always suspicious of early to mid 80's bands that I haven't heard of. If they were good I probably would know them. This one didn't do much for me

Neon Bible by Arcade Fire
Jan 20 2025

Never been a tremendous Arcade Fire guy but this is a good one

Vol. 4 by Black Sabbath
Jan 21 2025

How can I understand Ozzie's singing but not his talking? I don't typically enjoy metal but this wasn't terrible maybe because it's a little more blues based than others? I would give it 2.5 ⭐

Electric Ladyland by Jimi Hendrix
Jan 22 2025

Not his best selection of songs but still a great record. I often think about what Jimi would be doing today had he lived and my imagination tells me he would be cutting some killer acoustic blues

Suede by Suede
Jan 24 2025

Had never heard of these guys. Kind of a cross between Oasis and the Smiths. I enjoyed it

Elephant by The White Stripes
Jan 28 2025

Good record I don't listen to often enough

Smash by The Offspring
Jan 30 2025

Juvenileish punk rock not terrible

Come Find Yourself by Fun Lovin' Criminals
Jan 31 2025

My expectations for this one were pretty low but it's a fun record

Born In The U.S.A. by Bruce Springsteen
Feb 03 2025

Not in my top 5 Springsteen records but still a great record. Saw him on this tour best concert I've ever seen

Sign 'O' The Times by Prince
Feb 04 2025

I had not listened to this one previously. Very sprawling record shows the depth and breadth of Prince's talent. I enjoyed it

Bossanova by Pixies
Feb 05 2025

Been a fan of Doolittle for a long time but hadn't listened to this record. It's a good one really liked it. Debated between 3 and 4 stars. 3.5 stars

Rings Around The World by Super Furry Animals
Feb 06 2025

Listening to the first song I thought I wouldn't be listening long but it had some moments. Kind of odd but not terrible

Feb 07 2025

Some of the best potty mouth ever put on record. I think the world would be a better place if more people could simultaneously A) Respect the job that good cops do and B) Understand why young African American males would write a song entitled "Fuck the Police

Brothers In Arms by Dire Straits
Feb 10 2025

This is a good album. I kinda turned my nose up at it at the time of release as it was overplayed everywhere. I'm a big DS fan and these are all good songs but it's not their best record. I can't bring myself to give it 4 stars but it's a solid 3.5

So by Peter Gabriel
Feb 13 2025

This was overplayed a ton in the day so I kinda tuned it out but have come back to it often over the years. Even with it's overdone 80's style production I enjoy it

Superfly by Curtis Mayfield
Feb 14 2025

I've listened before but this is a nice record

Surfer Rosa by Pixies
Feb 17 2025

I hadn't listened to this one before. Good record #NotAHater

Van Halen by Van Halen
Feb 18 2025

Not a terrible record. I stopped caring about VanHalen not long after this one

Remedy by Basement Jaxx
Feb 19 2025

I tried

GREY Area by Little Simz
Feb 20 2025

I had never heard of her but it wasn't bad. Reminded me a little of Missy Elliott

Slayed? by Slade
Feb 21 2025

Had their ancestors been petty criminals and sent to the British penal colony of Australia they may have turned out as a slightly mellower AC/DC. Pretty straightforward 70's rock. Nothing remarkable but not bad. 2.5 stars

Remain In Light by Talking Heads
Feb 24 2025

Not my favorite Heads record but still a classic. Everyone I knew in college that was serious about music had a copy of this one

Let It Bleed by The Rolling Stones
Feb 25 2025

I bought this one on CD before I even had a CD player because I wanted to listen to the guitar riff on Monkey Man on CD. A classic not a track in vain

At Budokan by Cheap Trick
Feb 28 2025

One of the first records I owned. Some good tunes some just ok

Low by David Bowie
Mar 04 2025

Full disclosure I'm a big Bowie fan but rarely listen to a whole album straight through because they often consist of a few really good tunes and a few meh tunes. This one is no exception

Crosby, Stills & Nash by Crosby, Stills & Nash
Mar 05 2025

Beautiful record. Great songs and some of the best harmonies ever committed to vinyl. Classic

Drunk by Thundercat
Mar 07 2025

Odd

Off The Wall by Michael Jackson
Mar 10 2025

Not a big Mike Jackson fan but this is a very good record

A Girl Called Dusty by Dusty Springfield
Mar 11 2025

This is a nice Dusty Springfield record. That being said I am sometimes mystified by the catalog choices here. She is not an artist that demands more than one entry here and anyone who knows anything about music knows it should be "Dusty in Memphis" which is a classic

Electric Prunes by The Electric Prunes
Mar 12 2025

Pretty straightforward 60's psychedelica. A good listen if you are into that sort of thing

Kenya by Machito
Mar 13 2025

Enjoyed that more than I thought I would

C'est Chic by CHIC
Mar 14 2025

I hated disco as a kid. This wasn't as bad as I anticipated but still very formulaic and got kinda boring

Crime Of The Century by Supertramp
Mar 17 2025

Had never listened enough to to know they are progish. A couple of nice songs but not super

Rage Against The Machine by Rage Against The Machine
Mar 18 2025

I've never really listened to RATM before. I don't traffic in that kind of anger anymore but I like their sound. Morello is a good guitar player

Is This It by The Strokes
Mar 20 2025

Lotta hype when these guys came on the scene. Love their sound, it was unique at the time. Great record

Coat Of Many Colors by Dolly Parton
Mar 25 2025

I think Dolly is a great person but I have never loved her music. I think her voice is overly saccharinated and her songs lightweight. This wasn't bad though 2.5 stars

Shleep by Robert Wyatt
Mar 26 2025

What an odd hodge podge of stuff, some of it musical some not so much. Better than a 1 but not a 2

Rattus Norvegicus by The Stranglers
Mar 28 2025

Not familiar with these guys but I liked it. Pretty melodic for punk

Frank by Amy Winehouse
Apr 01 2025

Nice album. Once again not the catalog choice I would have made though.

Repeater by Fugazi
Apr 02 2025

Some decent guitar playing but not my jam

Clandestino by Manu Chao
Apr 03 2025

Some days I'm not in the mood

Lazer Guided Melodies by Spiritualized
Apr 04 2025

Had it on in the office for background which it is suitable for

Live At Leeds by The Who
Apr 07 2025

Many say this is the best live album ever. It's good but I wouldn't say best. Not my ideal Who set list but still good. The rhythm section is powerful enough to turn goat piss into gasoline

The Cars by The Cars
Apr 08 2025

Overplayed AOR from the 80's. That being said a ton of great tunes on this record.

Hotel California by Eagles
Apr 09 2025

Another overplayed 80's icon. Still a great record though. "Pretty Maids...." Is one of Dylan's favorite songs. I enjoy some of the mellower songs as much as the hits tbh

Paranoid by Black Sabbath
Apr 15 2025

As far as heavy metal goes this is iconic stuff I just don't love the genre. I think this is our 2nd Sabbath record and I still want to know how can Ozzy sing but not talk 🤔

Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
Apr 16 2025

Only one song on Spotify. I have listened to this before it's weird and wild

Southern Rock Opera by Drive-By Truckers
Apr 17 2025

Big fan of DBT's greazy southern rock. They aspire to greatness but come up just a hair short

Feast of Wire by Calexico
Apr 18 2025

It was ok not great but not bad. I debated between 2.5 and 3 stars but it made me want to listen to a Doug Sahm record so I'll throw in the extra half star

Bad by Michael Jackson
Apr 22 2025

A talented young man then the sideshow became the show after this record. Good record

Urban Hymns by The Verve
Apr 23 2025

Some solid British rock

Apr 24 2025

This one checks a lot of boxes, all great songs, meant a lot to me at the time it came out etc. Not sure that elevates it to 5 stars but I'm going there anyway

Violator by Depeche Mode
Apr 25 2025

Depeche no? Never been a fan but I listened through Personal Jesus cause I kinda like that one

Stand! by Sly & The Family Stone
Apr 28 2025

Funky!

Electric Warrior by T. Rex
Apr 29 2025

Basically ground zero for glam rock. Influenced a number of bands from the New York Dolls to the Black Keys. Big fan of this one

Odelay by Beck
Apr 30 2025

I love all things Beck. Mellow Gold was a nice record but this one really pushed him into the stratosphere. People will be singing "Where it's at" to themselves for generations

Elvis Is Back by Elvis Presley
May 01 2025

Elvis transitioning from the King of Rock and Roll to a pop star. Col. Parker wanted a money machine who cares about artistic integrity. Still a nice set of songs

Vauxhall And I by Morrissey
May 02 2025

The songs are good the lyrics are good and the performances are fine. The Smiths/Morrissey just never move the needle for me. Still a listenable record

Siamese Dream by The Smashing Pumpkins
May 05 2025

Standard sludge rock. Kind of a one trick pony but listenable

Felt Mountain by Goldfrapp
May 07 2025

Had it on in the background at work. Not as bad as I anticipated

White Light by Gene Clark
May 09 2025

Americana before Americana. Nice solid album

The Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest
May 12 2025

"Listen to the knowledge being dropped over beats". I enjoyed this one

Tapestry by Carole King
May 13 2025

Classic. A fantastic songwriter and a revelation as a performer

Slipknot by Slipknot
May 14 2025

Listened to the first song. I could probably listen to the instrumental track but the vocals are atrocious

May 15 2025

I would like to note that there are no artic monkeys in real life. This is a good record. I always try to pigeon hole but there are a number of music styles here with an undercurrent of FUNK. Good songs and some nice guitar work. Enjoyed

The Idiot by Iggy Pop
May 16 2025

Big fan of Iggy's work with the Stooges. Solo stuff is not bad. This is ostensibly a Bowie record with Iggy on vocals. Fun fact: Greg Shimonek is the biggest Iggy fan I know which means something although I'm not sure what

The Queen Is Dead by The Smiths
May 19 2025

Some people who's musical opinions I respect are big Smths fans. I am not, I don't dislike them they just don't move the needle for me

Rattlesnakes by Lloyd Cole And The Commotions
May 21 2025

Some solid British jangle pop. Remember them from college, wasn't a tremendous fan but knew some who were. Nice record

Roxy Music by Roxy Music
May 22 2025

Like some of their later stuff but this didn't do much for me

The Who Sell Out by The Who
May 23 2025

Big Who fan but I like mid career Who better than early Who. Some great songs on here but all the other mumbo jumbo I could do without

Synchronicity by The Police
May 26 2025

Like the Police's early stuff far better than this one but you have to give this record it's due as it was a massive commercial success. I enjoyed most of the hits on side 2

Here's Little Richard by Little Richard
May 27 2025

Part of the origin story of Rock and Roll. Fantastic stuff

Sticky Fingers by The Rolling Stones
May 28 2025

Street Life by The Crusaders
May 29 2025

The jazz portion of the program wasn't bad. Disco was meh...

Closer by Joy Division

Lotta hype surrounding this one. I've listened to it multiple times over the years and even own it on CD. I just can't bring myself to really enjoy it

Green Onions by Booker T. & The MG's
Jun 02 2025

Great players. I don't love instrumental records in rock necessarily but this is a good one

25 by Adele
Jun 03 2025

Not the best catalog choice for Adele but not a bad record

In Rainbows by Radiohead
Jun 04 2025

I have never listened to this one before but it's a nice record. More accessible than most Radiohead records

Mott by Mott The Hoople
Jun 05 2025

I was today years old when I found out Ian Hunter was the lead singer for Mott. Dylan meets the Faces meets the New York Dolls. Good stuff

Ys by Joanna Newsom
Jun 06 2025

I gotta say I wasn't disappointed this content was not available on Spotify

Power In Numbers by Jurassic 5
Jun 09 2025

Pretty middle of the road hip hop record. Not bad

London Calling by The Clash
Jun 10 2025

The Clash lay down their manifesto at the height of their power. The best album of the '80's. Also maybe the 1st hidden track accidentally?

Talk Talk Talk by The Psychedelic Furs
Jun 11 2025

Not my top catalog choice but a good record with a couple of the "hits". Listened to them a ton in college and have always been a fan

Cupid & Psyche 85 by Scritti Politti
Jun 12 2025

Usually sceptical of 80's bands I'm not really familiar with and this is another example of why. Pretty sedate stuff.

Surf's Up by The Beach Boys
Jun 13 2025

Kind of a hodge podge but not terrible. RIP Brian

Garbage by Garbage
Jun 16 2025

Listenable alt rock. Nothing revolutionary but good.

The Velvet Underground & Nico by The Velvet Underground
Jun 17 2025

Great debut that didn't sell and was generally ignored by the critics. It was well ahead of it's time and was incredibly influential. I read today that it only sold 30k copies in it's first 5 years but all 30 thousand people that bought it started their own band😄. Also Sue asked me if the guy's guitar was broke so even though Loaded is my favorite VU album I'm giving it 5 stars based on that 🤣

Coles Corner by Richard Hawley
Jun 18 2025

Listened in the background while reading but really like the mellow vibe. I'll return to this one soon and give it a better listen

Fever Ray by Fever Ray
Jun 19 2025

Listened in the background. It was ok for that

Solid Air by John Martyn
Jun 20 2025

British folk rock is it's own weird thing. I'd listened to this one before based on a glowing review. He was a good friend of Nick Drake and their styles cross over from time to time. Nice record

Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd
Jun 24 2025

Not a big Floyd fan but if I was going to like a record it would be this one

Phrenology by The Roots
Jun 25 2025

No complaints. The Seed (2.0) is a great tune

Jun 26 2025

Have always been a fan but haven't listened to this one as often as other records. Linda's vocals are beautiful and Richard renowned as a great guitarist shows it off in spots here. Wonderful record

Arular by M.I.A.
Jun 27 2025

Not bad

Hounds Of Love by Kate Bush
Jun 30 2025

Wasn't really familiar with her until "Running up that hill" resurfaced. Not terrible just not my thing

Live And Dangerous by Thin Lizzy
Jul 01 2025

I haven't listened to the Lizzy much other than the hits. This is a fun record 3.5 stars

My Generation by The Who
Jul 02 2025

Talking Book by Stevie Wonder
Jul 07 2025

Fantastic record

You Want It Darker by Leonard Cohen
Jul 08 2025

I won't argue that Cohen isn't a genius his music just doesn't resonate with me

Larks' Tongues In Aspic by King Crimson
Jul 09 2025

I just can't with the British prog rock. This one is mostly a bunch of noodling around. 1.5 stars

Calenture by The Triffids
Jul 10 2025

I've said it before I'm always sceptical of 80's bands I've never heard of but this isn't bad. I hear a little Lloyd Cole and some Prefab Sprout in there albeit quite a bit darker. Fairly standard late 80's "alternative" but good

In A Silent Way by Miles Davis
Jul 11 2025

I haven't gotten to this period in Miles career but loved this. Miles tone is beautiful and the other musicians are great

Beggars Banquet by The Rolling Stones
Jul 14 2025

Music for the Masses by Depeche Mode
Jul 15 2025

Didn't really love this at the time and still don't

So Much For The City by The Thrills
Jul 16 2025

Vaguely satisfying (albeit repetitive)Americana from some Irish lads. 2.5 stars

Here, My Dear by Marvin Gaye
Jul 17 2025

His divorce record. I didn't listen to the words very closely but enjoyed the record.

The Healer by John Lee Hooker
Jul 18 2025

JLH was probably the first blues artist I discovered (playing Boom boom boom in the Blues Brothers). Nothing wrong with this record and it's nice to see JLH get some widespread recognition late in his career. That being said this isn't even in the top 5 best JLH records. If you want the real deal check out John Lee Hooker Plays and Sings the Blues

Murmur by R.E.M.
Jul 21 2025

Game changer. Totally changed the way I listened to music. All timer

All Directions by The Temptations
Jul 29 2025

Nice Temptations record. Papa was a Rolling Stone worth the price of admission alone. 3.5 stars

Sweet Baby James by James Taylor
Jul 30 2025

Great album consensus is it's a 5 star record. I think there are a couple of tunes that are a little lightweight

Being There by Wilco
Jul 31 2025

Uncle Tupelo begat Son Volt and Wilco. Son Volt had a great debut record and Wilco's was good but kind of lightweight. This one caught people by surprise and belongs in the hall of very good

Permission to Land by The Darkness
Aug 01 2025

80's metal record from a 2000's band? Kinda fun I'll give it 2.5 stars

Joan Armatrading by Joan Armatrading
Aug 04 2025

Somewhat familiar but haven't listened extensively. This record had a nice vibe for a Sunday morning

Bad Company by Bad Company
Aug 06 2025

Good AOR rock from back in the day

Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Aug 11 2025

Not real familiar with them. Double album, only listened to the first record. Had some good rockers on it. 2nd record is supposed to be more mellow

The Wall by Pink Floyd
Aug 12 2025

I remember being very excited about this one coming out. Over the years I've lost my taste for both prog rock and concept albums but this is a pretty good example of both

Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield

Gave it a try didn't make it through the first 23 minute song

Spiderland by Slint
Aug 15 2025

Metallica by Metallica
Sep 01 2025

A classic of the genre. I just don't love the genre.

Led Zeppelin IV by Led Zeppelin
Sep 03 2025

All timer. Zeppelin's best record and the definitive 70's hard rock record.

Happy Sad by Tim Buckley
Sep 04 2025

Standard folkie stuff, not bad but not overly compelling. It would probably benefit from a couple more listens. "Once I Was" is a nice tune

The Man Machine by Kraftwerk
Sep 05 2025

I just can't with Kraftwerk.... never have been able to. Sounds like a video game machine taken over by aliens

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere by Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Sep 08 2025

Game changer from Uncle Neil. Every song is a classic. I've heard it referred to as the first grunge record. I don't hear that probably because Neil is wearing a flannel shirt on the cover

Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs by Derek & The Dominos
Sep 09 2025

I've cooled on Eric Clapton over the years but you can't deny this album. A true blues rock masterpiece. Duane Allman plays guitar on 11 of the 14 tracks

Sep 10 2025

A classic from REM. Different directionally for them. Not their best record but it is their best sounding record. Wore this CD out years ago. A great one

Songs The Lord Taught Us by The Cramps
Sep 11 2025

At the end of the day aren't they all "Songs the Lord Taught Us"? Psychobilly Surf Zombie Punk?? All I remember about this group is a well known local public radio DJ couldn't stand them so I never listened. I thought this was a lot of fun and I bet the live shows were insane!

Sep 12 2025

Never been a big fan. Annie Lennox has a great voice but it's all a little too "new wavey" for me

Sep 23 2025

Listened as background at work. Liked it would like to listen again

Ingenue by k.d. lang

Station To Station by David Bowie
Sep 30 2025

Love Bowie but not always his full albums but this one was pretty good

Green River by Creedence Clearwater Revival

Come Away With Me by Norah Jones
Oct 13 2025

Belongs in the Hall of Very Good. 4.5 stars

Rocks by Aerosmith
Oct 16 2025

This record was a touchstone for music listeners of my generation but it really wasn't all that for me. Aerosmith at their least pretentious I guess.

Pearl by Janis Joplin
Oct 17 2025

Oh Lord won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz. I wish I had a dollar for every time I got drunk and sang that one. Janis was a star that unfortunately was doomed to burn out not fade away. She's a fantastic blue's singer, wonderful record

Dig Me Out by Sleater-Kinney
Oct 31 2025

Solid punk record

Sea Change by Beck
Nov 03 2025

Maybe my favorite Beck record. A break up record with powerful lyrics and the beauty and depth of the music is incredible. You can feel the pain in every verse

Nov 04 2025

Aja by Steely Dan
Dec 08 2025

Good stuff

Disintegration by The Cure
Dec 09 2025

We just had one of their albums a couple of weeks ago and I said I like them more as a singles band. Still holds true but I like this one better

Dec 10 2025

I had this one on cassette and couldn't believe how radical it sounded at the time. Just great passionate punk rock young people angry about their circumstances. While I'm old and this type of anger doesn't resonate with me like it used to there should always be a place for it in music. I did a satirical speech in freshman rhetoric loosely based on "Holiday in Cambodia". Good times, good memories 🙂

Cloud Nine by The Temptations
Dec 12 2025

First 3 songs lean to the funk side ( side 1 of the record I believe). The rest is standard Temptations fare. You can't argue with either

Darkness on the Edge of Town by Bruce Springsteen
Dec 15 2025

IMO the best Springsteen record. Can be a hard listen but all great songs. Used to listen to "Prove it all Night" before every wrestling meet

Heroes to Zeros by The Beta Band

First heavy metal record? Interesting period piece. 2.5 stars

Mr. Tambourine Man by The Byrds
Jan 06 2026

A new and very influential sound for Rock and Roll. Lot of covers here and I normally wouldn't give 5 stars for this many covers but they are mostly Dylan covers 😁

A Love Supreme by John Coltrane
Jan 07 2026

This was the 2nd jazz cd I purchased after Kind of Blue. Beautiful

Some hits and some ok songs. 3.5 stars

Searching For The Young Soul Rebels by Dexys Midnight Runners
Jan 20 2026

This is our THIRD Dexy's record. No way they have 3 records in the top 1000. That being said I liked this one best

British dance pop. Not as bad as I anticipated. 2.5 stars

Ogden's Nut Gone Flake by Small Faces
Jan 23 2026

Have not listened to them much but most of the band are rock legends. Good stuff

Are You Experienced by Jimi Hendrix
Jan 26 2026

Nothing like it.... before or since. Incredible genius

Hunky Dory by David Bowie
Jan 28 2026

Love Bowie but not always his full albums. This was a good one

Nick Of Time by Bonnie Raitt
Jan 29 2026

Huge Bonnie Raitt fan. This was her well deserved commercial breakthrough record. Not her best one but still a good record

The Trinity Session by Cowboy Junkies
Jan 30 2026

Cowboy Junkies are kind of an acquired but I love love Margo Timmins. I have spent more time with "Caution Horses" but this is a nice record

Fulfillingness' First Finale by Stevie Wonder
Feb 03 2026

Never listened to this one before but have heard a couple of the songs. Nice record

Feb 04 2026

2Pac went to prison for this record but I still don't have a ton of words about this record. I enjoyed it 😁

Your Arsenal by Morrissey
Feb 06 2026

I've tried but Smiths/Morrisey doesn't do it for me. Mid

Scott 2 by Scott Walker
Feb 10 2026

Reminds me of when Dana Carvey or Martin Short used to sing showtunes on SNL.

Halcyon Digest by Deerhunter
Feb 11 2026

Much more atmospheric than I was looking for. Didn't make it too far

Signing Off by UB40
Feb 13 2026

Not their strongest album but still very good. 3.5 stars

Youth And Young Manhood by Kings of Leon
Feb 16 2026

Nothing revolutionary but some good greasy grooves. Retro southern rock

Bandwagonesque by Teenage Fanclub
Feb 17 2026

Never listened before. Feel like I need to go back and spend more time with it. 3.5 stars

Marcus Garvey by Burning Spear
Feb 18 2026

Lyrics are pretty political but this is a really solid reggae record. I enjoyed

Third/Sister Lovers by Big Star
Feb 19 2026

Big Star's last gasp, the sound of a band breaking up. Big Star was way ahead of their time, not my favorite of their records but still a classic

Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park
Feb 20 2026

Ron Wilwert says 5 stars. I'm going with 2

The Soft Bulletin by The Flaming Lips
Feb 23 2026

Not sure how I missed these guys in the late '80's but I enjoyed this one. 3.5 stars

461 Ocean Boulevard by Eric Clapton
Feb 24 2026

Don't care for Clapton much as a person but he makes some good music

B-52's by The B-52's
Feb 27 2026

Great record!! Plant Claire is one of my favorite tracks. If you went to a party in Iowa City in the mid 80's and they didn't spin this one at some point you might as well leave cause it's a lame party

Pieces Of The Sky by Emmylou Harris
Mar 02 2026

Good material and a beautiful voice. Emmylou is a treasure

Penthouse And Pavement by Heaven 17
Mar 03 2026

I lived through the synth pop era. Some are better than others. This was ok

Dr. Octagonecologyst by Dr. Octagon
Mar 04 2026

Unusual concept. Kinda amusing in spots. 2.5 stars

Time Out Of Mind by Bob Dylan
Mar 09 2026

I was always a Dylan fan but this record brought me back into it at a high level. The original Lanois mix was muddy but it fit the songs. I listened to the 2022 remix which is much cleaner and my preference. Either way it's an all timer. The incredibly long "Highlands" may be the most "Dylan" track of all

Green by R.E.M.
Mar 10 2026

Very different directionally for REM. Not a top 5 album from their catalog for me but still a good record

Modern Kosmology by Jane Weaver
Mar 11 2026

Wasn't terrible musically just kind of odd. I enjoyed it more as it went on. 2.5 stars

Good Old Boys by Randy Newman
Mar 12 2026

Randy Newman writes beautiful tunes with clever lyrics. This one probes the "southern experience". I'd like to spend more time with the lyrics but a really nice album

Billion Dollar Babies by Alice Cooper
Mar 16 2026

Although considered more of a novelty act now I was a big fan of Alice when I started listening to music. Couple throw away tunes here but mostly good rockers

Kind Of Blue by Miles Davis
Mar 25 2026

Finally a decent record!! This was my intro to jazz records. First one I owned and still the best one.

Funeral by Arcade Fire
Mar 26 2026

Not bad. I've never really got Arcade Fire but I don't hate them

The Stone Roses by The Stone Roses
Mar 31 2026

Lot of Hubub around this record. Not sure it's all that but some good things happening. Didn't care for the way the vocals were delivered but the band rocked out from time to time which was nice. A few more listens would probably be rewarding

Back At The Chicken Shack by Jimmy Smith
Apr 01 2026

Never heard of this guy but by the album cover I assumed he was a Muscle Shoals R&B guy but no a jazz organist? Pretty good stuff 3.5 stars

Brown Sugar by D'Angelo
Apr 08 2026

Not my favorite genre but he does a pretty good job with it

The Rising by Bruce Springsteen
Apr 09 2026

Been a Bruce fan as long as I can remember, that being said I don't love late period Bruce. This is not bad and I probably need to spend some more time with his later stuff. 3.5 stars

Liege And Lief by Fairport Convention
Apr 10 2026

Good Brit folk rock. Sandy Denny has a great voice (I believe she sang on a Led Zep tune that I can't remember right now) and Richard Thompson is fantastic l. Really good stuff

Apr 13 2026

I generally think Courtney Love is a despicable person and this is a Nevermind rip-off but still a pretty decent record

Apr 15 2026

Most critics peg this as U2's best record. There are a 3 better records in my opinion but still a classic

Bone Machine by Tom Waits
Apr 16 2026

I like Waits early stuff but this one doesn't do much for me. It was the critics darling but to me it's not musical and just odd. 2.5 stars

The Boatman's Call by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Apr 24 2026

Listened to this at work it wasn't too bad. Not a normal Nick Cave record. 2.5 stars

The Bends by Radiohead
Apr 28 2026

My favorite Radiohead record. A few misses but mostly great tunes!

Dare! by The Human League
Apr 29 2026

The '80's.... what a time to be alive. This was fun but nothing revolutionary. "Don't You want me" is classic though. 2.5 stars

Soul Mining by The The
Apr 30 2026

This record was pretty much the house record when I lived at 308 South Gilbert in Iowa City. In the grand scheme of things probably not a 5 star record but I just love it!

Sunshine Hit Me by The Bees
May 01 2026

I kinda liked this. Had a real nice groove in spots

Fragile by Yes
May 04 2026

No. I'm just not a prog rocker. A couple ok tunes but the rest is pretty forgettable

Wild Wood by Paul Weller
May 05 2026

I've always been a fan of The Jam and somewhat of Style Council but have never listened to Paul Weller solo. I really enjoyed this sounds a little like a Traffic record. 3.5 stars

White Light / White Heat by The Velvet Underground
May 06 2026

The least accessible Velvet album. Interesting as a time piece punk/grunge before they were invented. Sister Ray is a rocker

The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter by The Incredible String Band
May 07 2026

I was anticipating some hippie bluegrass stuff but this was more olde English folk tunes. I didn't love it

Post Orgasmic Chill by Skunk Anansie
May 13 2026

Not as bad as I imagined but still not my cup of tea

Private Dancer by Tina Turner
May 14 2026

Love Tina's comeback story and she is certainly talented just a little too "pop" for my taste. Some nice tunes though

Let's Stay Together by Al Green
May 19 2026

The Reverend can sing and Let's Stay Together is an all time great tune

May 20 2026

I've tried but I've never gotten really into this band. Not bad but a lot of hype

Behaviour by Pet Shop Boys
May 21 2026

Not terrible but I'm not a huge dance pop fan

Cheap Thrills by Big Brother & The Holding Company
May 22 2026

Debated wether I would give this a 4 or 5 then I listened to it. It's a seminal blues rock record

Hysteria by Def Leppard
May 27 2026

Not a fan

Heartbreaker by Ryan Adams
May 28 2026

Huge Whiskeytown fan and followed Ryans early career but kinda tired of him. This is a solid record though

California by American Music Club
May 29 2026

Not on Spotify

Stripped by Christina Aguilera
Jun 01 2026

Talking Timbuktu by Ali Farka Touré
Jun 08 2026

Nice Sunday morning vibe. Talented musicians

High Violet by The National
Jun 09 2026

I like the National. The lyrics are smart, the music is generally good and I don't mind his voice. It just seems like they make the same song over and over there is no differentiation

Grievous Angel by Gram Parsons
Jun 15 2026

Ground zero for country rock. Love Gram he left us way too soon

Da Capo by Love
Jun 16 2026

Mildly entertaining psychedelic folk. 2.5 stars

Blackstar by David Bowie
Jun 17 2026

I've said it before I'm a Bowie fan but not always as an album artist. I have listened to this a couple times and like it quite a lot and have always said I want to go back when I can really listen and I still want to do that. It's odd but I find albums by artists that know they are making their last one fascinating

Highly Evolved by The Vines
Jun 19 2026

I had a brief infatuation with the Vines and the Hives back in the day. Good rockin. 3.5 stars

Porcupine by Echo And The Bunnymen
Jun 24 2026

Pretty standard 80's fare. Not terrible not great 2.5 stars

Penance Soiree by The Icarus Line
Jun 25 2026

Jul 02 2026

Odd but not bad. The band is pretty solid

Randy Newman is always intelligent and enjoyable

Steve McQueen by Prefab Sprout
Jul 13 2026

Great 80's pop record. Bought it on vinyl when it came out

Ghosteen by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Jul 15 2026

Very critically acclaimed but mostly a downer in my opinion

Shake Your Money Maker by The Black Crowes
Jul 16 2026

Very solid Southern rock/blues. Used to listen to them a lot back in the day. They were on the radio alot prior to the demise of terrestrial radio. 3.5 stars

OK Computer by Radiohead
Aug 04 2026

I don't revere Radiohead in the way most music critics do but this is a good record. Listened on earbuds the other day for the first time. I would try that again

Pretenders by Pretenders
Aug 12 2026

One of the all time great debut albums. Sounds a touch dated but still great
