Reviews (page 7 of 13)
I liked a few of the songs on the album, but it was just really cool to hear how Rock started out
No lhe escoltat sencer però de fondo rocknroll és molt guay
Fine
História do piano e swing no rock, a abertura é icônica, "Tutti Frutti".
Frenetic and fun, a rock god and a real treat to listen to.
Iš tiesų tai slappina visiškai albumas, gerai susiklausė, visiškai iconic LP. Neprailgo, suprantu kodėl jį laiko tokiu svarbiu atlikėju, nors galbūt ne pilnai mano cup of tea. 4/5
The songs all suffer from being a product of their time with similar structure and blues progression but damn if Little Richard can’t sing with more energy and personality than anyone else at the time.
The loudest motherfucker in the world. What a voice, what a performance.
Great vibes. Some classics. Gets a bit samey.
I like a lot of the old R&B and Rock and Rollers from the 50's, but I love Little Richard. Lot of great hits on this record. Also, I can't hear Long Tall Sally and not think of Jesse Ventura in a helicopter talking about being a sexual tyrannosaur.
That man sure could wail. And learning the original lyrics to “Tutti Frutti” does make it all the more interesting. This is a good time but I do have to knock points for how many times he repeated the melody of his biggest hit. B+
Definitely an influential album. The songs are a bit short, but that's common for that time and I don't feel anything is missing. Overall it's a fun album.
Groovy, didn't blow me away 7.5/10
4/5 Great Album! Love the energy and expression of Little Richard!
Rock and/or roll 🎸
Heard before: some I don't think I've ever sat through an entire Little Richard album before, and honestly, I wasn't really looking forward to it. But I had a lot more fun! An all-time great jump blues voice, you can see how he blew some minds with its sheer force. And pissed off a lot of conservatives. Extra star for that alone. Top tracks: Rip It Up, True Fine Mama, Baby
:)
Witness the birth of rock and roll…some big hits, some average album tracks. Little Richard not yet fully formed on this album in my opinion, but interesting to hear the early days of the genre. (4/5)
Yep, that’s Little Richard Favourite tracks: Tutti Frutti, Ready Teddy, Long Tall Sally, Oh Why, R.I.P. It Up
Trop cool le projet il donne grave envie de danser
Great stuff, super fun, a bit repetitive/same-y but overall really great.
Ikoniskt album Bästa: Tutti frutti
Groovy
Banger, great energy throughout
Absolutely no one will be surprised to see Little Richard on this list. Even if you're not familiar with all his songs, his legacy is well known and well deserved. This is rock and roll in its purest, classic form. Although it predates the concept of the album as a complete work, it's a great collection from start to finish.
Really Alfa length. A few really great songs and some other eh songs. Better than the joke Elvis is.
Definitely something different and new. It’s a unique style of finger snapping rock and roll that also feels very for the time. I enjoyed this. Makes me feel like an 80s critically acclaimed movie main character driving down Nevada. Richard’s vocal inflections are very stylized and sound really good with his voice. Will definitely need some more listens before I can fully grasp this album. I am enjoying this for sure though. (First listen) The lyrics in this album aren’t mind blowing but service richards beautiful voice. His cadence is so good man. His voice inflections are j so good. All though his inflection can seem jarring it really does suit a very relaxed dance style groove. Although from what I’m used to in an album every song feels and sounds very similar. I had no issues with the instrumentals. Favorite songs: tutti fruitti, baby, oh why?, slippin and slidin,
nothin little about richards ‘tude and pipes. dude slays, cant get enough. bang them keys brotha.
I was a fool and didn't save my notes so no individual song notes but this album rips. Lots of classic dance tunes, love some boogie and shuffle blues. My man could SING as well he was hitting high notes that had no business being around in the area. This album makes me feel like I'm in a 50s high school dance and that's a good thing, I would be twistin' the night away if I was there. A lot of these songs sound like the templates that future rock and roll songs were based upon.
This was fun. Can hear how it was probably mind blowing when it first came out.
Happy, upbeat and made me smile
I love old school rock 'n' roll, great, fun music that was very influental, and Little Richard had amazing voice!
O sea, tiene dos canciones históricas. Por supuesto que tiene que estar aquí
An album full of energy. Little Richard's vocal stylings are unique on top of bluesy jive. Impossible not to feel good while listening!
WOOOOOO BBAAABBBY!!!
See everydaytunez
Another OG that basically isn’t too interesting if it wasn’t the basis for all rock and roll
ROCK N ROLL VIEJA NOMAS
Over 20 years before I was born, still sounds fresh today. Good music will remain good music, regardless of when it was recorded. Ready Teddy a particular favourite.
I don't know if this is controversial to say but this album is really good but I find it kinda of boring at times because of how same sounding a lot of the tracks are. That really is not an indictment on Little Richard it is an indictment on the genre at the time. Classic 50's rock and roll albums are very same sounding. I do think this is one of the best ones and it is mostly because Little Richard is one of the most charismatic singers you can think of. I really like this album but I would say it doesn't really stand up to albums even a decade into the future when it comes to the quality of the music. That being said I do give this album a ton of credit for being one of the albums that laid the groundwork for rock music. I would give it a solid 8/10 also as a side note "Rip It Up" is clearly the best song.
Ça rock, il peut ben avoir inspiré Elvis
YES
Rock 'N' Roll the way the devil intended it to be played...Not the big, scary animated Satan of today, but more like the red polyester dressed Jon Lovitz version of the Devil from SNL.
AMAZING
Lots of fun
Pretty straightforward here...Fun and energetic all the way. Put on your dancin' shoes and rock till you drop!
Är inte så förtjust i 50-talsrock och boogeliboggeliwooggy. Men, han är utan tvekan bra.
The scene in Predator when “Long Tall Sally” plays in the helicopter was like a hydrogen bomb going off in my 12-year old mind
Great rock & roll by one of the greatest performers
Great early rock n' roll. It must have been a blast to hear this thing for the first time in 1957.
Rock and roll, baby
4/5
Maybe without Little Richard there wouldn’t have been the Beatles.
don't pick ivy and hogweed without sufficient hand protection robert, you where up all fucking night with the itching and i am GASPING on an espresso. 8 days cold turkey and sober. i feel like such a ghost. i just want drugs. anyway this album rocks
Great album to get the day off to a good start with.
Another album like Lynard Skynard's where it's just banger after banger after banger. How the hell is anyone supposed to sit still when listening to there jams? Great voice, great instrumentals, great energy.
Good, enjoyed listening to it as a background music. Upbeat, fun, energetic. Great voice. Tutti Frutti was the only one I knew before
Fun, summery music
One of the founding fathers of modern rock, this should be assigned as required listening.
Although I was never a big rock 'n' roll fan, this is part of my musical history. Without the likes of Little Richard (and others) we would never have had the music we have today. Revolutionary!
Fun old Rock n Roll
Good tracks here.
Very fun and energetic! I'm not really any kind of aficionado to the very old rock and roll like this, but it was a real bop, and I can imagine the influence it had on rock music in general. It felt a little same-y towards the end, but it never exactly got boring. Just a real playful, fun, original record. Favourite: Rip It Up
What a fun album, start to finish.
Well I wished the previous day to listen to Little Richard and I got what I wished for. This album has many classics and Little Richards vocals are amazing. Yes the guitar playing is a bit simple by today's standards but the cultural impact of these songs and Little Richard himself is undeniable. Well worth the listen.
tutti-frutti
'50s music just doesn't sound like anything else.
Ha this is great, I can only imagine what impact this must have had on people when this was being performed live! An absolute joy of an album to listen and bop along to. Made my commute much more pleasant! Saved tracks: Tutti Frutti, Ready Teddy, Long Tall Sally (The Thing), Rip It Up
Groundbreaking. Such energy. I know this was very similar to much of the music of the day, but someone has to be first. Excellent performances.
I got a gal, named Sue... Sure you do! I got a gal, named Daisy... Stop talking crazy! Despite his obviosuly false claims of prolific womanizing, Lil' Rich knocks out a fabulous collection of fun, groovy songs. I'd surely be blasting this if I was alive in 1957. And to think of how amazing his music could have been if he wasn't bound by the puritanical chains of his era. I award Mr. Richard what he's really after, 4 big, long, hard eggplants. 🍆🍆🍆🍆
A legend. Some of the tracks seem to only be driven by Richard's screams, but a classic and pioneer of a whole genre of music.
Rock and Roll at its prime. And at its best
this album was plain fun! little richard brought a lot of energy to this album. his intensity comes through despite the slightly coarse quality, though the album does not suffer due to sound quality. this album was was a mix of rock and roll and rhythm and blues. there are the usual instruments, bass, guitar, drums, but the inclusion of horns and piano! little richard set a lot of standards with these songs, and inspired many as a result. for me, it's easy to hear the impact this had on prince's music--especially in the voice! interestingly, multiple songs on this album used the same, if not similar, arrangement and structure of "tutti frutti."
Classic.
It was a fun album and a lot of well known songs. I would listen to it again.
Infectious tunes, great voice!
The influence this has had is incalculable. Gotta pay my respects.
Don't personally love listening to it, but c'mon... iconic and a gamechanger.
Little Richard has one of the best, most iconic voices of all time. He's not an artist I seek out a lot so it felt like a treat to sit down with a full record of his. Phenomenal work.
Bloody brilliant, boy’s got some pipes
great album, not my music taste though. strong 3 light, 4
Really great album, I love it so far.
Awesome rock and roll birth soundtrack. Very repetitious, but it was 1959 fercrissake. If you want to know where it started, this is a great place to start.
A very enjoyable listen. Fun vocals with upbeat, rock-and-roll style jams. Very, very good.
Why don't you come back when you're a Little, mmmmm, Richard!
Huge fan of rhythm and blues, great album over all, voice is amazing with trumpets and drums to acompany it perfectly. A lot of iconic riffs and cues
Rock and roll clásico.
Fantastic early rock rave up!
Really enjoyed this album.
Man, Little Richard is wild. A few of these tracks feel like the studio can barely contain his voice. His range is really impressive too. I thought there was a woman singing guest vocals on “Baby” at first but no, it’s him. So “Tutti Frutti” is about sex? It’s gotta be, right? Hearing it with adult ears for the first time and realizing that 😂
Accidentally had my review removed (I think I closed the tab without hitting the "save" button), but fortunately it wasn't too long. This album is solid, and Little Richard is transcendent. "Tutti Frutti" is a legendary piece of American music / art. I think Little Richard is an influence on so many different styles of modern music and even if an artist isn't aware of this, I think it's still an unconscious factor. 4/5 for me.
ok
OK I had to rethink my ratings and criteria. This is a 4 star album because of its (a) breakthrough moment relative to contemporaneous music; (b) its performance and production - invariably single take; (c) song quality and (d) its longevity or classic status. Hope to fine tune my parameters as we move along.
One of the GOATs of rock and roll! Little Richard was a pioneer of this style, which evolved into rock as we know it. So many of the big rock bands of the '60s like the Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc. got their starts doing covers or homages to artists like Chuck Berry and Little Richard. This guy had the sauce, undoubtedly. Classic tracks on here like "Tutti Frutti" and "Long Tall Sally" still hit. Of course, the album is a bit same-y, similar song structures and progression and all that, but considering it was 1957, we let that slide. The album wasn't all that much of a thing yet anyway. Really great stuff here, I'm always glad to get formative projects like this. And shout out to Little Richard in general, man. I don't know how it is that some of the OG rock and rollers lived for as long as they did (Little Richard died in 2020 at age 87, Chuck Berry died in 2017 at 90!). His life was wild and colorful to say the least, and it's kinda cool to me that this flamboyant comet of a man birthed a genre and made it out of that era alive. Favorite tracks: Tutti Frutti, Long Tall Sally, Slippin' and Slidin', She's Got It. Album art: Just a portrait, but it looks quite modern with the font and formatting. Seems like a "best of," and in a way, albums kind of started out as that. 4/5
What a crazy voice
Long Tall Sally
Great, feel good, classic rock and roll
So, got this back to back with Elvis Presley's self titled album from the year before, and Little Richard definitely rocks harder. His version of "Tutti-Frutti" is far superior! Fave track - as well as "Tutti-Frutti", "Long Tall Sally" is a choon!
Undeniably fun throughout
Classic stuff. The blueprint for early Beatles, which was the blueprint for everything else. Fucking awesome album cover too!
The man was definitely on something
Inject this shit right into my veins. Little Richard as an artist is a 5/5. Unbelievable performer. Hugely influential for me. How a human being sings like that is beyond me. The rough production only adds to the raw, fiery power of these tracks. I can’t say the album itself as a piece of work is a perfect 5/5, but this music deserves a place amongst the greats.
Not bad
A good overview of why he's considered one of the greats of his time.
Eat your heart out, Elvis
Done extra listening here of takes that didn’t make the album such a tight band and uniform sound. You can totally hear the influence on the Beatles maybe even Fat Domino too. Tutti Fruiti and long tall sally remain stables of rocknroll but Can’t Believe you wanna leave is my fav
Top tier in it's genre. Excellent in every instrument, a fun album to listen to.
3.75
It was a good album, I would probably listen to it again.
Good rock n roll
Prima oldschool rock & roll
Great and a lot of fun! First experience with Little Richard was Mother Goose Rock and Rhyme. It was a fever dream of a movie where Little Richard played a king or something. Half terrifying half enchanting we watched it frequently growing up. Totally forgot about it until I listened to this
The guys had so much dynamism in his voice. The lyrics to Tutti Frutti sound so alive! God he is so vivacious, that the record can barely contain his voice. His band really suffers from the recording tech of the time. What a treat live he must have been.
king shit
Really enjoyable album, especially the first half with hit after hit. It reminded me of my grandparents. This may be a completely inaccurate comparison, but this is pretty much the Citizen Kane of modern music, isn't it? Listening to it several decades later, the music loses some of its shine and feels much less innovative & groundbreaking than it used to. But you can't deny how good it still sounds - Little Richard's distinct, soulful screams, the joyful and catchy melodies, the technique and musicality that went into every instrument and every piece of music. Even forgetting all that, the best thing about this record is how it makes you feel. In the same way that Citizen Kane grips you with its compelling narrative and intriguing character studies, Here's Little Richard hooks you in with its sheer passion, joy, and love for music. No wonder it influenced music as much as it did.
lil dicky lived a wild and wacky life by todays standards, but he did it in the 50s. genuine trail blazer. potential nonce. though both deny it and say he used the 15 year old girl to get him fast food from white only restaurants which coupled with his unconfirmed sexuality makes for the most unique of explanations that's so mad I'm inclined to believe it. no officer, i wasn't diddling kids i just love white people hamburgers. strong 50s rock n roll.
Lekker swingend album met bekende nummers. ****
Listened to 10/30/22 4/5 Favorite song: tutti fruiti, rip it up I’m convinced it’s impossible to be in a bad mood while listening to this album - it’s so fun and jazzy and makes you wanna dance
Classic. How can one not be familiar with many of Little Richard's hits? But some of the deep cuts on this album were new to me, and I really enjoyed it. Super solid groove. Highly influential music, which can be heard in a broad swath of music that followed.
Solid
This thing slaps! I love the energy in every aspect of it. Little Richard’s yells and adlibs give a great feel and excitement to the album. His swagger really comes through in the singing and lyrics. Looking forward to coming back to it. 8/10
Really fun 50s A great record
Really cool, danceable album. Nothing else to say.
Great selection of songs. Fav track: Rip It Up
Absolute classic roots of Rock n Roll. Besides the performance and energy, the fact that he wrote many of the songs is impressive, esp for that era.
This guy had ENERGY! Fun, good time, raucous rock & roll… I had to listen to some amped down shoegaze to regain my balance.
Not sure what i was expecting. Good listen all the way through.
Was listening to this in the car with my kids. And at first they both didn't like it. By about the 3rd or 4th song they were both talking about how it started making their toes tap. And a half hour in, they were all in. The album is just flat out fun!
This was fun and nostalgic. A good Monday combo.
Classic sounds, similar across the album. Great get up
This album was slammin
Sounds like Elvis Presley cheerful, good for old people I guess :)
Very good
It was awesome. Bop city.
What sounds fairly tame in 2022 was a revelation in 1957. With his exuberant whoops, pounding piano, and playful innuendo, Little Richard helped build rock n roll into a cultural touchstone.
How can you not smile at the very first "words" of this album. "Tutti Frutti" is ridiculous in/by today's environment but I'm pretty sure pop/rock music wouldn't exist as we know it without Little Richard. In general I don't get much out of "old" rock but this one is the real deal and - intentional naiveté here - when rock and roll was fun. Mandatory listening for history and for fun. It's Little Richard, just play it. 8/10 4 stars.
All songs the same. All wonderful
Great album, although it may sound all a bit samey. Tutti frutti is still a classic, as is Long Tall Salley.
A classic opening, and unique voice and delivery… Plenty have tried, but nobody has recreated his thrill. Almost a 5, but how much twelve bat blues can one man take?
Early funk. Songs are really short, and don't have a lot of variety between them.
Doesn't get more rock n' roll than Little richard.
Onhan tää aika ”rankkaa” ilmestymisvuosi huomioonottaen. Vähän toisteista mutta ei liikaa. Tykkään kovasti. 4/5
Fantastisk energi
Interesting and important, clearly a trailblazer. Influenced many. Loved the live feel of the instruments. Short songs with more of less the same tempo made me lose interest after a while
Funky
Sounds a bit basic these days, but he's obviously a great singer and has tons of energy
Man, they must have had a fantastic time dancing to these tunes for the first time! Wow, I've never listened to different takes of the same song. Miss Ann is so different from 1 to 6. They must have a hard time choosing which version to put on the album.
It was fun but repetitive
A true classic. For 1957 this sounds pretty modern still. Maybe because it influenced so many records after it. You can hear a ton of people after modeling Little Richard. James Brown, Otis Redding, etc. It would have been really interesting to be young during this time when nothing else sounded like this, without knowing how rock and roll would branch off in so many directions.
Nice album, I've never heard of Little Richard before, but this made me read up on him and wow, I had no idea that this was such an influential musician. Would listen to again
I really dig it
Here's a little 4.
Super album 4.2 out of 5
Wop bop baloobop alop bam bam indeed Li’l Dicky.
An important and interesting album for sure, but I struggle to really rate old school rock and roll too highly because all of the songs are so similar
this album is legendary, but tbh i dont think i’m going to come back to it very soon.
A genius but a product of his time. Inspired so many, and yet I never want to listen to tutti frutti ever again 8.2/10
Probably was crazy for the time. very cheerful album
One of those all time great rock n roll records.
Lots of classics. I only didn’t give this 5 star because some of the songs do sound very similar
I give it a 4 because I appreciate that Little Richard was a foundational rock and roll performer. I like the music but it gets a bit one dimensional after a while.
I've never really listened to Little Richard before, and while I enjoy a bit more modern music more I can appreciate what he brought to music, which is still a good listen. 4/5
*To those it may concern: all parents should be very careful not to let their offspring be exposed to this lewd and loud individual making this mind-numbing racket that passes off as music these days. Our (white) children must absolutely be kept away as far away as possible from such degenerate and obscene self-appointed 'artists'. The future of our society is at stake...* This up here, is probably what most conservatives thought during the fifties. Of course, now, it's just good old rock n' roll. Yet let's not be mistaken... Such close-mindedness and ignorance still exists today. It's just that conservatives should not be listened to when it comes to art anyway. History always proves them wrong. Number of albums left to review or just listen to: 872 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 70 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 31 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 28
I really dug this, reminded me of fallout.
I’ve never listened to a full Little Richard album before. A lot of hits here (most of which were covered by the early Beatles). Fun and high energy album for Monday morning.
Good upbeat rock and roll. Songs maybe start to get slightly repetitive and homogeneous towards the end of the album.
Loud, boisterous, fun. Can be a little formulaic, but the formula seemed to work just fine, and the songs are short enough to where it isn't much of a drag. Favorite tracks: "Tutti Fruiti", "Rip It Up"
I’m waffling over how to rate anything so foundational to rock and roll. I liked it and respect its innovation (although it’s a sound now so embedded in a strata of pop that it’s hard to hear it as innovating). But there is some monotony to it.
1957. Tutti Frutti, Long Tall Sally, Rip It Up
You can hear so many modern styles in this music it's amazing.
Energy, showbiz, originator
Very fun, made me smile and want to dance.
Lekker swingend vroeg rock 'n roll album. Zeer dansbaar
Legal, sonzao da antigas
Infectious fun energy throughout!
It does feel a little samey after a while, but it's just wall-to-wall bangers to be honest An incredibly important and influential album
Classic!!
Tooti fwooti
Obviously the structure is repetitive, but can't deny that this is good.
One of the main architects of this thing called rock and roll comes forth with a relentlessly raucous album filled with some of the most important songs in music history. Be sure to also check out the bonus tracks that delve into how the songs become shaped into what they would eventually sound like, the demo version of Baby, take 8 of Can't Believe You Wanna Leave and takes 1 to 6 of Long Tall Sally are worth the listen.
Muy bueno
A rip-roaring stomper of blues becoming rock n roll. The energy is off the charts. Keeping it that full-on gets a bit much at times, but the sheer exuberance punches through.
WOOOOOOOOOOOO I am a bit based toward Little Richard already (LuciLLe WOOOO) but I gotta say it again, this album is a banger. Little Richard's voice is music to my ears, and many of these songs are now going to be stuck in my head for weeks. Thank you Little Richard. Favorite songs: Tutti Frutti, Long Tall Sally, and Miss Ann.
A bit of bop music, a bit of blues, and enough energy to bring even the most introverted wall flower onto the dance floor. The already infectious tunes are brought to life by raucous wails, punched up fills, and smooth rasp of Little Richard's vocals. In fact, you can hear in tracks like 'Jenny Jenny' that Little Richard is nearly overcome himself by the music trying to explode out of him. This man's performances transferred the rock-n-roll energy into legions of artists to come. They heard something special in the full-throated expressiveness and they couldn't resist taking that idea and running with it.
Wow, he really did come from outer space didn't he? Had a lot of fun listening to this, the sound manages to feel "vintage" rather than "dated", and while the songs stick to a formula, it's a great formula! 5/5 contextually, but still a 4 now
Lovely stuff. I didn't enjoy quite as much as the rest of you, but it's definitely a 4, particularly of the context of when it came out. Did feel a bit same-y on occasion, but Tutti Frutti and Rip It Up are absolute delights.
Great singing voice, has a great feel along with catchy instrumentals. 8/10 Would listen again.
Classic
Little Richard just pounds the ivory doesn't he? Love the energy in his playing and his vocals. His band brings it too. I find it interesting that he had a bunch of singles with no album and finally decided to put them together. Almost sounds like a modern day artist. Definitely a 4 here, but something is keeping me from saying a 5. I don't know what. Maybe some so-so songs? Maybe not a lot of variety? Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about?
It's all formulaic rock n' roll, but he was one of the primary "architects" of the formula and deserves a lot of credit. Super fun to listen to, but it's all basically the exact same song over and over. His voice and energy are definitely amazing. I'd give it a 3 for repetitiveness, but a 4 for being an original. Plus, I'm pretty sure Tutti Frutti is going to be stuck in my head for the next week.
Energetic and fun! I enjoyed this a lot!
For me the 50s is like this; There's Buddy Holly and then there's everyone else. To me Buddy Holly is the seed from which grew all the music that is important to me. Now after hearing this Lityle Richard album there's Buddy Holly up here, then there's little Richard a notch or two below ....and thennn, there's everyone else. Good songs and one of the most chameleon like voices I've ever heard. 4.5 🌟
Woooooooo
pretty great, man’s got pipes, but all the songs almost sounded the same, not too much diversity, overall 8/10 but I definitely think he ripped off Poor Me by Fats Domino with his song Can’t Believe You Wanna Leave, it sounds almost the exact same and I’m pretty sure it came out a year after
It's a much different experience listening to Little Richard once I found out the original lyrics to Tutti Frutti. Not a worse experience by any means, just much different. I like thinking about the role of dancing in the formation of early rock n roll. All the songs on this album are good, though they all sound a bit similar to each other. I think that's probably an artifact of approaching this album more than 60 years after its release. Regardless, the music is fun and Little Richard's voice brings so much flavor to this album. It's easy to see why this album was a stand out of early rock. 4/5
Protean jams.
I think that so much of the last 65 years of popular music contains DNA from this album. This is Rock 'n' Roll! "Tutti Fruitti" is a bizarre song that has been recorded so many times, and yet I think Little Richard is the only one who really sounds right at home singing it.
Whamp ba de lu bow
I mean, it's Little Richard. He practically invented Rock 'n' Roll. And when he sings "Tutti Frutti oh rootie" you just can't stop yourself from replying Ooooooh!
“If I had been white, there never would have been an Elvis Presley.” -Little Richard
Pure rock and roll, but mainly 12 bar blues over and over again.
Very familiar, but the energy is still palpable. Classics and very influential.
Legend
What an album to follow Black Sabbath as the next one to listen to. Starts out with Tutti Frutti which is pretty much the opposite of heavy metal. Full of energy and wooo! it is irresistible. Besides the attention demanding vocals he band is on point throughout. Notable is that all the songs are two or two and a half minutes long. Establish an interesting rhythm or melody or lyric, repeat it a couple times, solo break, reprise, done. Nothing on the album is trying too hard. It's just rock and roll. If these songs don't make you want to dance then you are dead inside. Long live the 50's!
Great collection of classics, some of which i had never before heard.
130822 13:21 4
Solid old school rock 'n roll. Bit formulaïc at times, but holds up.
Classic blues stuff, nice
Very raw vocals, bouncy and fun. Makes you wanna do a little jig.
Every song is a little samey, but that's not inherently a bad thing.
Little Richard's unique voice is obviously the most striking thing about this album. Other than that, it's slightly repetitive, with all of its 50s era bopping simple blues pattern. I felt like I heard 4 or 5 songs, some of them 4 times.
It was fun.
The energy and passion in this record matches some punk rock albums from later decades. There is a real urgency here and damned if it isn’t all danceable. It’s unmistakably Little Richard at his finest. The production is very 1950’s but tolerable none the less. Fave tracks: “Long Tall Sally” “Ready Teddy” “Can’t Believe You Wanna Leave”
A classic
Absolutely infectious up-tempo energy. Just pure fun to listen to. Undeniably catchy. Vocals, piano, and sax all have a unique and interesting voice on the album. My only complaint would be the uniformity of all the songs throughout the album. Not much change of pace or feeling throughout.
Forgot what he sounds like but enjoyed the music.
Really hard to rate. It's hard to find a fault with it but obviously it sounds different today to what it would have at the time
Nice
it's fine. 3.5/5, rounded up to 4
This album I’m so many ways is ahead of its time and an inspiration fir so much that followed. Not only was he pioneering rock but he was pioneering sexuality, fashion, singing style, etc. he sings about anal sex and transgender people which feels contemporary now, 65 yrs later. This is better than the other bebop records we’ve listened to on this list, his voice, range and little touches and improvisations elevate it beyond the others. Without this there’s no Otis Redding, no James Brown, no Prince. I imagine this was insanely fun to see live with more improvisation, longer breakdowns, etc. The album started like it was shot out of a cannon, then lost me a bit in the middle with the repetition, but brought me back with some bangers on the latter half. This album deserves a 5 for all it has done, and would’ve if it was the 60s, 70s, 80s, but things have changed so much. Based on this listen alone, I still think it deserves a 4, but spiritually I’m giving it a 5.
I'm listening to this shirtless at my desk after powering through some yard work during lunch. One of those weird sweats where your core is hot but extremities are cold from the chilly fall weather. Lil' Ritchie is cooling me down and heating me up right where I need it. I'm also browsing Taiwanese restaurants on UberEats while boogying in my seat to these jams. Talk about fusion.
pretty good liked all the songs
More restrained versions of some his classic songs. I'm sure there are more raucous recordings from a similar vintage. That said, Little Richard is the duck's nuts.
Me sorprendió lo mucho que disfruté este disco. Sólo conocía Tutti Frutti y aunque es repetitivo, no aburre y se disfruta sin problema. Songs: Baby, Can't Believe You Wanna Leave Me, Rip It Up, She's Got It
Classic and legendary. The showman that changed everything.
This cat's music was anything but little.
I assume this would have been something never heard before which is pretty cool to think about.
rock and roll baby
Superb!
4/5
Very fun
3.5, but I'm not sure yet which way it's going to fall. Pros: the energy is just fantastic. I can't think of many other albums or artists that have the raw energy Little Richard does. Cons: the classic Little Richard screams and WHOOOs got to be a bit much when they're in every song multiple times. I know that's blasphemy and that's just his style, but it made me start to think of that as a gimmick. Ok, the energy tips it to a 4.
What a debut. Incredible energy and sound.
It's so odd that, I got "Here's Little Richard" (1956) a day after "Here are the Sonics" (1965). The Sonics pretty poorly covered several R&B songs and apparently decided to even steal the title of their album from an R&B artist as well. It was interesting how similar these albums were in terms of intended style, instrumentation, vocals, etc. - but, by all accounts, Little Richard and his band actually pulled it off. The musicianship is better, the production quality is better, the energy is better - it's just better. Still - it get's a little repetitive. Tutti Fruity, Ready Teddy, Jenny Jenny - I get it.
-"Tutti Frutti" is great, obviously -"True, Fine Mama," "Can't Believe You Wanna Leave," "Long Tall Sally (The Thing)," "Oh Why?," and "Rip it Up" are all great
noc
upbeat, soulful, what I wish rock still was !
yeah, lekker spetteren
Baile con el
Sehr cool!!
Awesome. Unusually consistently high in quality for rock 'n' roll.
Man he's got one he'll of a voice. So much energy and passion. The song structures are repetitive, but yhats to be expected from the 50s. Favorite Song: Long Tall Sally
Little Richard was a seminal artist for both Bob Dylan and Van Morrison in their early years. The influence can be heard in Bob's very early and very late recordings (he kind of did his own thing in between, you might have heard about it) but the impact on Van is perhaps more obvious. Little Richard and the other early rock n roll singers (predominantly Black artists with rhythm and blues backgrounds) expanded the remit of expression within popular music. The vocal performance was no longer solely the domain of lyrics and recitation but of scat singing, repetition, hollers, shouts, doo wops and sha la la's. In a nutshell, the voice became an instrument. This album is a wonderful exponent of this ground shift within the thing we call pop music.
Loved Tutri Frutti
Fave song defo Tutti Frutti. Fab album, enjoyed the short, snappy songs.
I'd be more than happy if music still sounded like this.
Great old school rock and roll. Influenced countless of artists.
Fun!
Mooi plaatje!
Geweldige stem, leuke gilletjes, goede energie. Misschien wat veel van hetzelfde, maar ach.
Great album. Enjoyed.
Great sound 👌
Loved it. Sometimes the pacing would throw me off for a song or something but it was a great album and energy.
Rockin Robin vibes. Pretty solid 8/10
Great album.
Really great, every track enjoyable
7. I liked it overall, but his singing annoyed me at times
Not bad indeed, a clear influence on so many.
3.8 - Solid early rock 'n' roll, in the vein of Fats Domino. Little Richard is predictably fabulous with his soulful, gravelly delivery. Rock solid backing band with rhythm guitar, small horns section. Drums and bass way back in the mix holding it down. Fun and classic.
Very enjoyable, Songs I already knew so it was an easy listen.
Le pondré un 4 porque es Little Richard. Pero me aburrió.
Good ol' rock and roll. 8
Nice!
great voice, classic rock sounds.
Gucci, swingy
Really fun album. Makes me want to dance.
Just great. What a treat, what an artist.
Would listen again
Great and Upbeat, but a bit too old fashioned for me
Not all of the songs are big hits, but a lot of them are. Overall very strong, and he's an engaging singer.
Was cool to hear something I wasnt expecting
It's fun, danceable, and timeless. This Aussie gives it four Big Brekkie Burgers at Macca's out of five.
Better than I thought it would be!
I appreciate his ground breaking contribution to music. It has fantastic energy. Solid early rock and roll. Very interesting to hear the huge differences between the original and the remastered versions. 4/5
Love tutti frutti
Good booty indeed.
I dig it!
Ohhhh Rudy!
This is good, classic Rock n Roll.
Tutti Frutti! Good stuff
Long tall sally is weer een lekker swingend nummertje.
Ahead of its time. Beautiful album great vibes
svårt att inte gilla detta. Riktigt go pipa har han pojken. uppskattar också ett kort album.
Legenedary, wooooo [little Richard voice]
Nobody has the energy little Richard has. Crazy how well his work has held up over the years
A little dated but still solid. Respect
Impossible not to love this stuff.
Hitkavalkad! Ready Teddy! Det finns en Little Richard biografi som är skriven av Charles White som heter The Life and Times of Little Richard. Little Richard hade hon "the fastest tongue in the west". Och mitt i kalaset klampar Buddy Holly in i logen, istället för att vända på klacken och gå ut igen så ska han bara ha "halat" fram den och Angel svarade med en subtil invit och händelseförloppet var som följer "She opened up her legs and he put it in her. He was having sex with Angel, I was jacking off, and Angel was sucking me when they introduced his name on stage. He finished and went to the stage still fastening himself up. I’ll never forget that. He came and he went.”
What a boatload of fun, I do wish the music was louder in the mix though.
I have a hard time rating albums from this time period. I realize how influential they were to future musicians, but they sound "old" to me. When I was growing up, this was old-timey music and it's hard to shake that mind set. Little Richard certainly knew how to put everyone in a good mood with his music and singing. High 3.
I'm always surprised by how the 50s were OK with using a single chord progression without variation. The album is historically important, but boring and samey by today's standards.
3 stars Kinda homework record for rock n roll history. I’d be lying if I said I would ever rock this for fun, but there is good stuff that clearly influenced countless acts afterward. When I had Vinyl Me Please Rock track they did this record after having had The Strokes, System of a Down, Iggy and the Stooges, so it was a weird choice and I didn’t care for it. Still don’t too much, but rounded up because a lot is owed to it.
I am enjoying this. I wish I knew more of the weight this album carried, but I enjoy it none the less.
I respect it, but I don’t think I’ll ever listen to this on my own.
Classic rock n roll.
Good music history with this one
Considering I love the Beatles and everything Paul McCartney makes, this album was quite the origin story. It’s interesting to go back and hear where all those influences come from. Not for the main rotation though.
