Reviews (page 9 of 13)

Man, does Little Richard love 12-bar blues. There's no doubt that early rock n' roll was incredibly formulaic, with often the only way for your ears to distinguish one song from the next being the name of the girl (Tutti Frutti, Long Tall Sally, Jenny Jenny, Miss Ann). However, in effort to remain consistent, it's hard not to have a deep sense of appreciation for it knowing the influence it had on the next generation, which took everything to a whole different stratosphere. All those bands/artists adored Little Richard and Elvis and knowing that pre-teen Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney were losing their minds over an album like this must mean there's something special about Little Richard and his music.

It's hard to overstate how important Little Richard's impact on rock and roll was/is. I feel that 50s music is typically assigned a bit of a squeaky-clean image and maybe some of that is deserved. But "Here's Little Richard" is a toe-tapping reminder that even the earliest rock and roll, could still make you feel dirty in all the right ways. Audiences weren't stupid; they knew what a lot of these songs were about, but thank god they didn't care. A lot of these tracks begin to feel pretty repetitive, especially musically-speaking, but if it wasn't broke, then there was nothing to fix. At the time of its release, Little Richard had just been surpassed by Elvis as the biggest musical star in America. Unfortunately, Little Richard had a hard time getting out of his own way over the next couple of years and eventually, his star faded. However, the fact that an effeminate, semi-openly gay black man from the deep South was able to reach the heights he did, when he did, really is kind of amazing. But when you can wop bop a-loo bop like that, it's easy to see why. 3.5/5 Favorite Tracks: Tutti Frutti, Can't Believe You Wanna Leave, Baby, Long Tall Sally

It's impressive on a single-to-single basis but the form of the album had not really been firmed out just yet for rock-n-roll. The album format worked well for jazz & folk in the 1950s but the crash-boom-bang sound of early rock music was ill-suited for the LP. I hold firm on this, rock music didn't slot in well to the LP format until about jeez, Rubber Soul? Live albums notwithstanding, the way that labels structured albums didn't account for the unique contours of rock music, thinking of it like pop music. Much of the appeal of this early genre stuff is how outrageous and in your face it is and when stretched out across ten to twelve songs, many of which are good but many of which also match each other in energy and content, they all begin to blend together, ears only perking up at now legendary tracks like Tutti Frutti or Long Tall Sally. To be clear, near every track on here has its merits and Little Richard's stage dynamism is second only to The Killer Jerry Lee (surpassing it in some ways, the two ran about neck and neck) but the difference between how Little Richard sounded as a single - a disruption in the sea of sound - versus how he sounds when he's the only game in town for thirty minutes is striking. And that's without even getting into the real anarchy - Little Richard Live. But Here's Little Richard does do an admirable job of communicating the appeal of Little Richard. The songs are frantic and horny as hell. His voice is awesome, scratchy and able to hit all sort of strange abject marks - it's only partially trained and when it cracks because he can't quite hit the note, it sells the emotion that much more. Here's Little Richard does its work admirably - as a record. It does a good job of selling me Little Richard, I want to see him play live. But do I think it hangs together as one piece of cloth? It's about on par with the Elvis releases around the time - that is, good primer but real heads know to dig in. It's undoubtedly one of the better rock 'n' roll albums of the time, especially given that most of its competition was either dropping compilation albums or were nipping at Presley's heels. Little Richard was clearly his own thing and holds his own against Presley. If anything is his undoing, it's the way the industry placed limiters on the potential of rock music. Favorite Tracks: Tutti Frutti, Baby, Long Tall Sally, Jenny, Jenny, Oh Why?

Tough call. One on hand, this record contains twelve cuts of archetypal rock 'n' roll that check all of the boxes: the performances are loud and energetic, the songs are short and to the point, the lyrics are direct and relatable, and lord almighty there's a sax solo *in every song*. All performed by a charismatic singer/pianist who essentially brought the genre into being. And yet in the other hand, here in 2025 I never find myself searching out this record or even actively seeking out any kind of 50s rock, even though I admire these performers a great deal and can see the influence of their sound on successors as varied as The Beatles, CCR and The Cramps. Hearing a Little Richard song in passing is great, but a whole album from him (or Elvis, Chuck Berry et al.), with its primitive recording techniques and over-reliance on the same twelve-bar blues progression *in every song*, seems a bit like a museum piece rather than something that has the ability to thrill six decades on.

Good old rock n roll

For a man whose name is a synonym of small penis, he sure got some big dick energy

hauska vekkuli meininki. tosi 50-lukumaista. tuskin palaan kuuntelemaan kuitenkaan

This is kind of an album with the same song happening again and again, but it’s pleasant.

It’s ok

You can’t deny the charisma. For many, this is where it all began.

This guy's got one hell of a voice, just wish he'd use it for more than singing about a bunch of women falling in love with and/or leaving him. It'd probably be a much better album if I were alive in the late 1950s, but there's only so much 12 Bar Blues I can take in one sitting, and this one's pushing it. I can't be too harsh, though. All of the songs were at least fine, some were pretty good.

Another one in which it wasn’t bad, but just wasn’t anything that’d I really enjoyed. Tutti frutti is the first song and probably the best, which is not a good sign.

116 Tutti Frutti!

Great energy but too samey

good classic LR, nothing catches though

Little Richard had some great range. The last song on the album was a demo and it was probably the best

It’s fun but not something I’d listen to daily

great energy, better than that louis prima album, still sonically too samey for me.

A classic.

Top track: Tutti Frutti

Fun and energetic. I think more than one song sounded like tutti-frutti, which is only one I knew and only one I will remember

yeah it's good rock'n roll but it sounds al the same somehow

Very fun, but it does get tiring (maybe I'm just not in the mood)

like it

Amazing album for the time and you can hear how much he influenced the likes of The Beatles so hugely important. Favourite Track: Long Tall Sally

It’s Little Richard. It’s fun. It’s old. It’s got a real groove. Man was a born performer and we owe him a ton. To listen to now, this is a little dated, but it still gets you moving.

They used to just clart that piano and yell shit

Difficult one, I think you could make a strong argument that Little Richard is the single most influential musician of the 20th century. Dylan, the Beatles, CCR, the Stones etc all namecheck him when describing their influences. But, listening now, it’s so hard to distinguish this from the rest of the rock n roll of the period. It’s definitely good, but an example of the fact that when and where you hear something totally changes what it means to you. I’m sure if I heard Little Richard in 1957, as a bored teenager in Duluth playing with my dad’s radio, then I’d probably have gone on to make Blonde on Blonde too… alas, I’m just a bored lazy dude on the internet in 2025 so no such luck.

Wop bop a loo bop a wop bam boop! Why were songs so short back then? All of these songs sound the same.

Classic album. Easy to listen to. Favorite track: Tutti Frutti

Classic album

Góð en öll lögin eins samt

Bara fínt.

Pretty fun listen. Clear that this is more of a collection of singles than an album as not much of a flow - enjoyed nonetheless. 2.5/5 🌟

Iconic 60s album. Somewhat repetitive in sound but fun to reminisce to my early early music memories. Tutti Frutti is a classic. Listened before? Y Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): Tutti Frutti, Have Some Fun ⭐⭐⭐: Liked it.

All the songs sound the same, but three stars for Tutti Frutti because I love The Brave Little Toaster. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): Tutti Frutti ⭐⭐⭐: Liked it. Saved some tracks.

Sympa 3 ⭐️

Utjecajniji nego kvalitetniji, a po svemu sudeći baš nevjerovatno utjecajan. I sad kad je inspirisao mnoge, kvalitetnije, zvuči smiješno.

3.0 - Ok

Lite bra men enformigt. Säkert häftigt när det släpptes

Strong capital wasteland vibes listening to this. It’s fun, but one note. A fantastic display of early popular music, but it’s undeniably aged poorly. Respect for Little Richard though. ✨

It’s classic and a legendary shaper of music, but also too much blues for me and the guy shouts a lot.

I think I would have been more into this when I was younger and had that "old-soul" phase going on. Or like if its part of a soundtrack of a scene I like. Like I imagine some Edgar Wright movie using a song like "ready teddy" in a car scene. But I probably wouldn't really seek it out too much. I can appreciate it's importance and for what it is but otherwise doesn't really resonate personally to me nor do i think the production is particularly interesting. It's just quite simple comparitatively to other albums as well like it, like the one with louis prima with "just a gigolo". I dont know what much to say lol, maybe if I am in a mood for something i'd put it on. The sax stuff in "slippin and slidin" pretty cool. 3 stars

Only real complaint is his shrillness on some songs

I should probably rate this higher because of its impact on rock but honestly I just can't bring myself to. I really didn't enjoy this that much. He's got passion for sure which was great but he just kinda shrieked the whole time and none of the songs did anything for me. I'd rather listen to Muddy Waters.

I understand how this influenced so much that came after it, & enjoyed the bluesy rock & roll, but it all sounded the same after about 3 tracks. 3.5 stars

This is history, but still repetitive af

12-bar proto rock, gets old quickly but I can picture the room where this was recorded and glad I listened to this.

I get why it's important and I get why it matters but there feels to be little variance amongst the songs. They all have a samey sound. And I can only listen to 12-bar blues inspired rock for so long. As a plus, you can tell that he really enjoys his art. And I'm sure seeing him live at the time was a real banger but this is of the past and I'm going to leave it there.

Landing on a 3 here.. I get the historical importance but it gets old after a few minutes. Maybe just one of those days I'm not feeling very open minded.

Ok, sure

Great album but mostly the same rhythm for each track

Fascinating how you can hear the foundations of so much music that followed.

Rock and roll

It was probably so fun to go to a Little Richard concert in the 50's, and I probably would've been a fan of the guy if I had been alive then. I just don't think this album holds up compared to more modern music. Still an interesting listen though, especially considering how pioneering this album was. 3/5

A fun listen. Probably won't listen again though

Little Richard is pretty enjoyable, but I’d prefer him in small doses. Thankfully, this record isn’t crazy long. 3.3/5

Good fun and super innovative of it's time but not something I'll regularly go back and listen to.

Moins ma came, mais ça reste évidemment qualitatif

This boy funky! So many hits in here that I didn’t know where all on this album.

It is enjoyable but are some of the songs the same just with different lyrics? Certainly sounds like it 3.5*

Fun, three stars

Pretty good sound, but it got old relatively quickly and the album (deluxe edition) was way too long at least for a single listening session.

Makes me want to watch Top Secret again. Is it me or is this essentially the same song over and over again with different lyrics?

Listened April 2021. I appreciate it historically, and if a song comes on I always enjoy it, but a little goes a long way and it's a fairly repetitive album.

I liked it. Infectious sound, it got stuck in my head.

I enjoyed it, but felt like I had listened to it all before. And it all sounded very samey

From song to song you notice that the album’s structure is very similar, with alike piano riffs and a constant rock ’n’ roll frenzy that feels flat, though I can recognize that for the time it must have been a very revolutionary resource and since the style was just emerging its composition was still quite plain. Little Richard’s voice is the most remarkable aspect: his raspy tone playing with falsettos, his different vocal nuances gave each song something distinctive amid choruses that were also often very repetitive. Favorite song: Oh Why?

It was okay. I am quite fond of the genre but the album at whole did not really reach my heart.

One of their better albums. Not a big rush fan but this has limelight, yyz, and tom sawyer.

Already reviewed this album, pretty cool, but very dated.

I understand why this is here, and I do feel enriched by having heard it, but it just felt like too much of a relic from a bygone era for me to actively seek it out again. This is the kind of music my Mum would've been listening to at home courtesy of her parents growing up, so naturally she has an appreciation of it, and I wouldn't mind getting up and wiggling my arse to this after a few beverages if someone was to put it on.

Great vocals, fun album. Definitely past its time frame I think. I would rate this higher but struggle to find a situation where I intentionally throw on this album.

There’s no surprises here, it’s 12 songs, all between 2 and 3 minutes in a classic Rock 'n' Roll style. Coming in at under 30 minutes it's a really easy listen. Obviously revolutionary at the time, it's maintained it's energy even though the sound is locked into that time period. It as never going to blow me away but if I want that sound, it'll be something like Little Richard that I'm reaching for. _Long Tall Sally_ was used in the helicopter scene in the _Predator_ movie, so always a fave!

Soulful voice. Great listen

When people talk about the classics, this is really what they must be referring to. Each song is perfectly crafted to make you want to move and dance along, and there's just this energy that just naturally brings a smile. The negatives of this album really boils down to two things however: 1. Some of these songs can be a bit repetitive. Given the songs are all relatively short and fast paced however, this feels more of a nitpick compared to how fun they can be. 2. The album itself feels both dated while also not dated at the same time. While every song is great, none of these are songs are ones I necessarily want in something like my everyday playlist. I can't really hold this against the album however, as this is effectively the Ground Zero of what Rock & Roll would become, and laid a solid foundation for countless artists to come. While others have certainly done it better, this is a consistent and monumental album with no real skips to it, and is well deserving of its spot on this list.

The pioneer of Rock N Roll! Great tunes, but they do all feel very familiar to each other.

it's not my thing on paper but this album is just so fun.

Awesome period piece, really enjoyed each piece but they all started blending together by the end.

Rock and roll

I think there's a lot to be said for being the first person to do something, and so credit to Little Richard for that. But I guess it's just a bit too old-fashioned for me to fully enjoy today.

Classic old album, pretty fun.

love the sound of it, even if it gets repetitive by the end of the album. fun as hell to bop along to at work

Just ok for me, not my style!

Good ol' rock n Roll is a part of music history, but there are better examples around. Loved the bluesy tracks but i cant get away with his voice.

Another amazing musician with a sordid history

Every song sounds the same tbh

Mediocre

Honestly, can't go wrong can you?

50s rock ‘n roll classics but they do get old after a while. My favorite was Long Tall Sally and my least favorite was Oh Why?

He’s important to Music, totally get it. But it’s also a lot of the same song over and over again. Gets boring after a bit.

This is a good time. You can't be sad listening to Little Richard.

Woooo! This album is a wrecking ball of energy. This is the kind of album that I love listening to and I enjoy it in the moment, but as for staying power I don't really gravitate towards this stuff. All the tracks are exactly the same vibe though. Hope you're ready for this swingy bluesy rock for 40 minutes straight, because that's what you're getting! It's fun though, just a lot. A lot of songs just repeat the same word or phrase over and over which is a peeve of mine. Standouts are "Tutti Frutti" "Long Tall Sally" and "Rip It Up" buuuuttt honestly they all started blending together after a bit. This one's a 3/5 for me.

Little Richard is such an important part of whole rock evolution. Not quite the music that i listen to, but I have to appreciate the influence this guy has had as a frontrunner of everything we nowdays file under rock music.

2.5 genre

Music of its era

Tutti Frutti 3.8 True, Fine Mama 3.7 Can't Believe You Wanna Leave 3.5 Ready Teddy 3.3 Baby 3.4 Slippin' and Slidin' 3.6 Long Tall Sally 3.5 Miss Ann 3.3 Oh Why? 3.3 Rip It Up 3.1 Jenny, Jenny 3 She's Got It 3.1 Score: 3.383333333

Lots of fun! A bit repetitive, but no bad songs.

Tutti Frutti transported me to the house cleaning scene in Brave Little Toaster Cool to hear the original of Long Tall Sally Liked Oh Why? and Rip it Up - "Got me a date, and I won't be late Picked her up in my '88" It's all very samey but it's all very fun

Couldn't have said it better than the other reviewer; "It's great. Then it's the same great for the next 6 songs." Likely a groundbreaking album that shifted the direction of music, but it's harder for the layperson to fully appreciate half a century later. Tracks to Track: Tutti Frutti

Starts great but does overstay its welcome.

I liked how his voice sounds on this, you can hear how raw it is. It's not my genre. It all kinda sounds the same.

Little Richard is always a good time. I enjoy this as well if not better than all formative Rock and Roll sounds. 3.5/5

Songs sounded kinda the same but I can see how this would be hardcore shit in ‘57.

Very good album, little Richard has an amazing voice, what holds this album back though is how similar a lot of the records sound to each other, some have the same opening piano riffs and most have a very similar musical formula

I liked this better than the Elvis album! Really repetitive song styles and lyrics but that might just be a thing of all 50s music. Had a nice time listening. 6/10

Favoritas: Tutti Frutti, True, Fine Mama; Ready Teddy, Lony Tall Sally, She’s Got It Menos favorita: Rip It Up #DAY 23: 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die Going fully classic now, we turn to the oldest album we’ve covered so far. We go back to 1957 to witness the legendary debut of Little Richard. Known as “the architect of Rock ’n’ Roll,” he was a vital influence on everything that came after, from Elvis Presley to Paul McCartney, and his mark can still be felt in the most modern corners of the genre. And it’s no wonder—each song overflows with energy, and his charisma is undeniable. Little Richard’s voice seemed unstoppable, with those expressive yelps, a vibration that instantly makes you want to move, and a wild soul that would truly become embedded in the identity of rock as a musical style. That said, as an album experience, it hasn’t aged all that gracefully. The art of the album was still in its infancy, and in the end it feels more like a simple collection of songs. Still, there are undeniable classics here—immortal, even—like the hugely fun opener Tutti Frutti or the faster, pure rock ’n’ roll rhythms of Ready Teddy. Even so, I think it’s clear that the genre still had a lot of growing to do, especially in the instrumental department, as in many cases I feel the band doesn’t quite match Little Richard’s overflowing energy. I have to say, this is music that would probably hit three times harder on stage, in front of a crowd dancing freely. An undeniable classic, absolutely essential for the genre and for modern music in general—the seed of what would become an endlessly exciting style with infinite variations. Favorites: Tutti Frutti, True Fine Mama, Ready Teddy, Long Tall Sally, She’s Got It Least favorite: Rip It Up

3.5 stars

A 5/5 for its influence, no doubt. But rather one note on its own.

When you are the Master in your field…stick to it!!! This record is rock n’ roll at its peak delivered by a generational talent!! Sticks to a formula but delivers!!

Classic 50s sound. Very distinctive voice. Early rock pioneer.

This was a great album, but once you hear a couple of the songs you've heard them all. 3.5/5.

Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Rock n roll.

Yeah, yeah, history and all that. But please write more than one song. Infectious energy, and he brought something revolutionary to the world. Another comment said something along the lines of "I guess you had to be there" and I agree with that. Got bored quickly and wont come back to the album. Might spin up Tutti Frutti if I ever need a dance floor to break out in a jive madness though.

3.4 Obviously a seminal artist/release, but it's age is showing slightly. All the best songs seem to be very slight variations on one another - tutti frutti, Reddy teddy, long tall sally, rip it up - all virtually instringuishable from a distance. Regardless, laid the groundwork for a lot of what was to become, and for that we should be eternally grateful.

A fun album, if I was alive in the 1950s I would of probably danced to it inside some nightclub. 72/100

This is a fun record that really transports you to a specific time and place. I can only imagine how life changing this record would have been to people hearing it for the first time in the 50s. I'm happy I've listened to it, and I fully appreciate Little Richard's influence on pretty much all of the music I listen to now, but it's not something I have any real desire to listen to again.

Dudo volver a escucharlo. Nota: 2.9

Very distinctive sound and voice. Works better for some tunes. I imagine this was a breath of fresh air when first released!!

Fun, easy listen.

Another classic album. Sounds great with some total bangers.

Fun album!

***A good album, highly energetic, makes you want to move

It's great to listen to an album which influenced many rock & roll artists to follow. Though it is an enjoyable listen musically, lyrically it's very repetitive. The songs are really short but still manage to feel a little long with some songs.

Quite good

divertido

Hoooooooo, good golly Ms. Errible, my writing has been terrible. Even for the meaningless writing exercise that this is. Barely understandable. The only thing my writing effectively conveys is the micro-plastic ravaged hellscape that is the brain of the modern man. Hollowed out by instant gratification and shabby products, only to lurch into gear at the promise of more of that dopamine. Online word puzzles can’t stop this degeneration. Ugh. What is it today? More albums from the 50’s? Please don’t be 20 songs that are “Oooh I love you.” We have struggled with that formula. Tutti Frutti - Yeah this lives up to the hype. It’s repetitious of course, but my word is the energy palpable. Whether it’s a sexual parody sanitized for the mainstream, or a stolen song, this performance is earth shattering. True, Fine Mama - So often you’ll find a true mama, or a fine mama, but those true, fine Mamas are one of a kind. Snap em up while you can. Maybe write them better songs. The vocals remain electrifying but this song was whatever. Can’t Believe You Wanna Leave - His screeching is so impassioned. Got to love that. This is a good song, but I just know the rest of the album is going to be just like this. The groove is superior to other acts we’ve heard though. Ready Teddy - This is Tutti Frutti. It’s the same song. Instead of ooty, we have eddy. Same song, different rhyme scheme. Hopefully he does every vowel by the time this is through. Baby - The gentler vocals mixed with the more old school blues makes this a little departure from the previous tracks. Pretty funky. Slippin’ and Slidin’ - A song about the triumphant 32 minutes you can use a slip and slide before some kid injures himself beyond repair, or the slide rips. 50 bucks well spent. I’m not talking about the studio time for this song. Long Tall Sally (The Thing) - it’s another very similar song; however It does go pretty hard. Little Richard’s vocal inflections really pop on this song. Miss Ann - We’re back in the slow blues-y rock section. We can’t have two songs in a row that are the same, but we can’t certainly alternate pairs of songs that are exactly the same. Print it! Oh Why? - Great question. I think it’s because Little Richard was already controversial enough, so why would he challenge conceptions further? Americans are not famous for their embracing of new ideas. Oh, it wasn’t asking me why every song is so similar. Rip it Up - Surprisingly subdued for a song I expected to go insane. It’s fun on its own, but as part of this album? It’s just there. Jenny Jenny - How many ladies was this young singer courting?? We’ve had everybody from Sue to Ann in this thing and now Jenny makes an appearance. This vocal delivery has to be cocaine influenced. I just read that he wasn’t on drugs at this time, but my word. She’s Got it - What’s that? Elementary school at 9:00? Little girl = skip. Well I can’t legally skip in this airtight process I’ve encased myself in like so much bubbling concrete. Nobody would ever know, but I would know, and that is the worst of all, isn’t it? Yeah this was another 50’s albums it’s amazing how the music industry has always prioritized singles over albums. I don’t see much point in listening GNILYB to this back to front. Turn on most of these songs individually and feel the fuckin’ POWER. But as an album? Talk about one-note. Little Richard is a pioneer and this has more punch than most, but the repetition makes me want to avoid repeated listens. 2.5-3 HIGHLIGHTS: Tutti Frutti, Baby, Long Tall Sally (The Thing)

Good oldies

Incredible

Richard may be Little, but his impact on popular music is about as big as it can get! Here's Little Richard! Yep. There he is. What I have to say about this album is not to dissimilar to what I've had to say about other 50s rock and roll albums. Here's the thing. I understand the importance of 50s rock and roll. Without artists like Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, and of course, Little Richard, music as we know it today would not be the same. I get that and I respect this era and style of music for that purpose. I understand why albums like this are on the list. However, I just can not get into 50s rock and roll myself. I don't vibe with it for some reason, for one big reason. These songs all kind of feel the same. Yeah, that's the crutch of this musical movement. Of course, I'm not saying that all artists of the time sound the same as each other. Comparing Little Richard to Fats Domino or Buddy Holly wouldn't be fully accurate. But comparing each song on this album to each other song on the album? Yeah, it's fair to call this album repetitive. However, there are three things that make this tolerable for me in the case of Here's Little Richard. Firstly, this album helped lay the foundations of rock music, so it's kind of got that Ramones self-titled effect going on where you can't help but respect the album at least a little. Secondly, the album's only about half an hour long, so it doesn't drag in the slightest. And finally, the style of music here is good. I like the energy. Songs like "Tutti Frutti" are classics for a reason. The energy that Little Richard displays on this album captured the 50s youth for good reason. The instrumentation is solid too. It's clearly rock and roll, but the influence from jazz and blues is very clear. It really makes you think about the genre's black origins, which is good because history is valuable. Additionally, I have to respect Little Richard at least a bit for writing some of his own songs. The writing may not be super complex and these songs do kind of feel like they're all about girls, but at least he wrote some of them himself. Good job! Overall, this is definitely an album I'd keep on a list like this, but not one that I personally am super invested in. Still, I respect it as an essential listen. Solid 3/5.

Undeniably influential. Not my favorite in terms of pure listening, though.

"Tutti frutti" +1, "Long tall sally" +1, revolutionary at the time, aged ok

Decent album.

Some great hits on there but never every track was a hit.

I enjoyed listening to each of the songs but as an album I found it repetitive. Really liked his voice and I loved the music, would put any one song on and enjoy it, or even play the whole album in the background, just wouldn’t put it on to properly listen to again. Fav song: Tutti Frutti (maybe? The songs felt similar enough that I struggled to pick a fav) Least fav: Jenny, Jenny

Really liked some of the songs but it got a bit samey and felt like it was just this bloke yelling at you over instruments. Jenny Jenny especially was quite annoying. Specific rating 3.4 Fav song- true fine mama Least fav- Jenny Jenny

This gets a 3 for the cultural impact. I'm not gonna return to this in the future, but I still found it enjoyable and the musical influence is obvious throughout.

Best charmant.

Classic

5 stars for being a good fun album. 2 stars for my personal taste. Gonna put it at a 3. Would set a fun ambiance for certain events or shops.

Thanks to the world early rock’nroll tube tutti frutti, it earns 3 stars otherwise only 2. I’m pretty sure it was innovative but now its bit old, still is good I won’t listen it again except the all fruits song

A fun bop.

Fun, definitely of its time, but great for when it came from. And clearly influential.

Seems like some James brown influence. Not too bad

This feels like a very polarizing album. I started listening to it in the morning and was NOT feeling it. Was actively annoying me and felt hokey. Then listened to it after the gym, sun out, windows down, and I was jammin. Could have been a 2/5, coulda been a 4/5, figured I'd split the difference

Tutti frutti

There he is

Fun, old timey, really interesting to hear how "simple" music sounded back in the day and im curious if the music of today will be similarly viewed in the future

yeah it's fun. that's about it

Timeless, Little Richard. So much energy on this one that it’s hard not sing & dance along.

It’s hard to really tap into what made this so revolutionary at the time it was released. But it’s still fun.

I mentioned in the Count Basie comments that I had been listening to Andrew Hickey's "The History of Rock Music in 500 Songs" podcast, and obviously the early episodes have a lot of Little Richard discussion. I found this excerpt (copied from his website) interesting and had never heard it before: "He was becoming a huge star, and that meant he had to *break* a lot of contracts. He’d got concert bookings for several months ahead, but those bookings were in second-rate clubs, and he had to be in Hollywood to promote his new record and build a new career. But he also didn’t want to get a reputation for missing gigs. There was only one thing to do — hire an impostor to be Little Richard at these low-class gigs. So while Richard went off to promote his record, another young singer from Georgia with a pompadour and a gospel feel was being introduced with the phrase 'Ladies and gentlemen—the hardest-working man in showbusiness today—Little Richard!' When James Brown went back to performing under his own name, he kept that introduction… " And now you know... the rest of the story. Good day!

Little Richard fucking LOVES playing the same song over and over lol. That love is infectious though. "Tutti Frutti" and "Rip it Up" are still great.

They would be banger songs back then but not for the modern ear imo.

Classic rock n Roll! 3.5 stars for me.

Can imagine the kids in the 50s loving it. Probably very novel for that time.

"Tutti Frutti" as an opener is a good choice. Whole album is classic 1950s, but the good kind.

Full of energy and pretty fun, but gets tiring very quickly. Was apparently a big deal at the time of it's release, but there's little reason to listen to it now

So much energy and fun!

I loved the energy and the recording, which is just perfect for its era

Really good album, I can imagine this being big at the time. I had a fun time listening to it. I had never listened to him before.

Bra driv på gutten. Solid stemme.

This album makes me want to hit a illegal speakeasy in a relaxed suit.

Great fun songs and happy vibes throughout the album. I had a really fun time listening and loved his voice!

This is where it all started, the roots of rock and roll. Staying power, influence in buckets, hits and energy. Classics like "Tutti Frutti", "Ready Teddy", "Long Tall Sally" anchor a solid solid debut album by an icon who reshuffled the deck when this one was released. He was likely hated by parents in the same way Motley Crue were in the 80's or Metallica was in the 90's. You still hear a number of these songs in movies, ads, etc. All short and to the point, no messing around. By the end of the album you're a little worn out. I see the need to include this on the Top1001 due to influence alone but the hits help secure it. A little one dimensional but worthy of 3.5 stars.

Listens: 1 Standout tracks: Tutti-Frutti (obviously), Ready Teddy Proper rock and roll. It's too bad I think virtually all of the songs sound the same. There's obviously a little nuance, but it's pretty consistently the same material. Also, crazy short album; not ever 30 minutes of material. I'm also pretty sure my father took me to see Little Richard in the summer of 1998, and the only thing I distinctly remember is him telling the crowd to "Shut up"... That's his schick, apparently. 3.5

6/10 Moves fast and was fun. Good stuff 4-28-2025

Nog een keer fatsoenlijk luisteren

Pretty good classic stuff. A little repetitive however.

It definitely belongs on this list, and it holds up reasonably well. It's an important part of rock and roll history, but I don't think I'll come back to listen.

this is what Elvis wanted to be! This was a fun album to listen to. I knew a few songs and even the ones I didn’t were good. Prince definitely got a lot from little Richard.

It's undeniable that this was a groundbreaking, massively influential album. And it's hard not to be pulled in by Little Richard's energy and bombastic delivery. But to my modern ears, most of the tracks on this album sound the same. Standout track: "Tutti Frutti"

Gear: Hifiman Arya Artwork: 👨🏾‍🎤😱🟨 Production (201121 Remaster): 🤔😐👍 Music: 🎹🔥🔂 Rating: 🕰️🕰️🕰️(🕰️)/5

Historically important but very predictable 70 years later. All 12-bar blues progressions. Great performance though.

Not bad, lots of energy, just not my thing

Didn’t realize the impact Little Richard had on rock until listening to the album.

Long 2 albums. Second is a bunch of different takes of some songs - if you're interested in recording or just a huge little richard fan - this is probably awesome

It's short just around 30 minutes. Listening to it is fun. Little Richard just goes for it on most tracks. Then you realize it's just an album of singles because that's how it was it was done then. You can hear the blues in the songs, but it's done in a such a way that it doesn't feel like a blues album. You can see how much of a lasting impression Little Richard has had on music. It's worth a listen but don't be too chocked if you don't revisit it.

I like it and I tried to lock in but I can’t listen to this while I work it feels like im a clown

Tutti Fruti

It’s alright. Classic voice.

Tutti Frutti, oh Rudy

50s rock n roll. Some good tracks, fairly standard otherwise. Lots of 12 bar blues Vocals are pretty impressive. Precursor to James Brown and that style Best track (other than Tutti Frutti) - Rip it Up

I enjoyed this. At only 30 minutes in length, I appreciated a type of music I don't usually listen to. Any longer and there would have been trouble! Obviously a pretty influential artist.

Little and Richard, I mean short and fun!

Enjoyed this. Short and snappy.

Heard all my life, can appreciate it for what it is...won't put on though.

Little Richard is a force and a fascinating person. This album is an intense and powerful break with the a lot of the popular music that came before it. That said, a little goes a long way. I can’t hear the album in its proper context - I can only hear it in comparison to all the music that came afterwards, much of it probably influenced by Little Richard. But because I can’t hear the album in its proper context, I struggle to fully appreciate it. It’s loud, brash, the songs a little too much coming one after another in the early morning. My favorite is the more down tempo, bluesy Can’t Believe You Want To Leave.

Yeah, I'm not really into Little Richard (I just find shuffle beats and the standard blues progression a little boring at this point) but I acknowledge that he had an important place in rock n roll history.

Good stuff, but not something that I would listen to on the regular.

It was fine and early rock example. They all kind of sound similar

Keith - 7/10 Ross - 6.5/10 Caylum - 8.5/10

it was ok but they all kind of sounded like tutti frutti

ldefine nuance..

It's obviously dated, but this is in the category of foundational albums. I probably overrate the '50s and early '60s albums on here, but it's honestly usually just fun stuff. Little Richard is able to capture an impressive amount of energy in a recorded album. The pace feels almost frantic at times, his vocal riffs keep you on your toes (though they go a bit overboard at times). This feels like a real crossover point for like early jazzy R&B music and early rock music. You can kind of feel the influences from both sides. This falls a little short of some of the other albums of the time for me, but it's still an enjoyable one with a few of his most famous songs. A good listen. Since this is my first Little Richard album on here, I went down a bit of a rabbit hole on his Wikipedia page. It's...something. The guy had some serious issues handling his sexuality, we'll just leave it at that for this review. Favorite song: Tutti Frutti Other: True Fine Mama, Ready Teddy, Baby, Slippin' And Slidin', Long Tall Sally (The Thing), Miss Ann, Rip It Up, She's Got It 3/28/25

6/10, like yes hes an icon but AABA can really only get you so far 😭 some sick ass bari solos throughout though, loved slip and sliding but tutti frutti 🔛🔝

Folks, here's rock n' roll. To give this record anything less than 5 stars would be narrow-minded considering the massive impact this man had on an entire musical genre. But I'm a spoiled millennial who's had the pleasure of hearing a lot of music in my time, and after the sixth track of 12-bar blues and "WOOOOs" I was ready to rip my ears off.

Transcendent 5-star talent, repetitive 3-star record.

Great fun, high energy, but no further ideas after about track 2.

Good old foot tappin rock n roll. Lots of familiar songs.

I know this is hugely influential on the music made over the next decade, but it's not my favourite. I do like Little Richard's energy.

Its Little Richard. Reptitive and a little wild but iconic

Just good 50s music. idk if it’s the genre or the time, but a lot of the songs sound similar

Fun and fast paced. There’s a reason why Little Richard’s music is still around today. That said the songs tend to land on the repetitive side which lessens the enjoyment of the full album.

neat. sounds like '50s music, that's for sure.

While looking for work.

Little Richard is fun. I don’t listen to him much, but I did enjoy this for the most part—especially the few piano bits!

It seemed like every other song was just Tutti Frutti. While Tutti Frutti was good, it isn't that good.

Ganz okayish.

As expected, piano riff woo music, I liked it

Little goat

Anything prior to the Sixties on this list is pretty much up my alley. This one too. I can just barely imagine it sounding fresh. Great vocal performances on every song, even if other aspects of the songwriting seem super contrived. I’m sure that’s the Seinfeld effect.

I liked the songs but they were so similar. Would have been nice to change up the tempo on more of themand if there was more musical variety I’d have given it a 4.

it’s rock and roll

Filled with little quick quips of soulful singing over danceable instrumentation. A fun album that treats itself as a reward song after song instead of a chore!

Nothing to say really. Pretty much exactly as I expected, as 1950s pop has literally 0 variation between songs. Voice is quite powerful and certainly works for this style a lot. Just glad songs aren't too long. Favourite songs: ready teddy, rip it up (i think this one is different a bit). Overall around 5/10

Arguably the first true Rock & Roll record. And, as per usual with the genre, every song is essential the same with slight variation and different lyrics. I understand the huge influence this had on popular music, but it's been done way better (and also way worse) later. Key tracks: Tutti Frutti

Fun one with a lot of energy. Listened to: grocery shopping. Favorite tracks: Tutti Frutti, Can't Believe You Wanna Leave

All of the songs sounded the same, and that’s not a bad thing.

On the surface, this sounds like your standard late '50s boogie-woogie piano-driven Rock N' Roll record - infused with various big band and jazz sounds. It makes sense, this was a genre Little Richard was a pioneer of. Maybe the standout here was Little Richard's vocals, they're sharp, guttural, and vicious. In the mix here, they're piercing - just listen to 'Can't Believe You Wanna Leave', 'Jenny, Jenny' or, especially, 'Ready Teddy' which may be my favorite song here. It's in many ways as cliche as this sound gets, with the breaks, repetitive melodic hook, and danceable groove, but god does it sound good. 'Slippin' And Slidin' (Peepin' and Hidin')' I feel similarly about, a fun-sounding track with this very playful core melody. Nothing else here really gripped me musically. The songwriting wasn't very interesting and the song structures follow your typical blues style. The brass sections were relatively subdued, which I liked, but they tended to blend in with one another. But even with all that said, I'd still say it was an insightful 30-minute album, one that speaks to Little Richard's importance in the creation of rock music as we know it.

i liked this more than i thought i would honestly

I believe this album was an game changer for many people

Little Richard is an obvious legend and hugely influential when it comes to rock and roll. that being said, i don’t see myself coming back to this outside of enjoying the novelty factor

Rock'n'roll at its old schoolest. Nothing wrong with it you know.

Every song does kinda sound the same (although it is a decent enough song). Makes me feel like I’m living in a black and white world and want to dance in an American diner in the 50s

He really goes for it

I appreciate what he did for music but it doesn't hit the spot for me entirely.

rock n roll

This was really cool to finally listen to. I had obviously heard some of it, but it was great to listen to the whole album. My rating is solely based on my enjoyment listening to it because who am I to critique Little Richard? An inarguably influential album that shaped modern rock music.

Little Richard certainly does have a lot of energy. The album opens with a bang with Tutti Frutti. Richard’s has a great voice. He rarely holds back. The music isn’t revolutionary but it he energy sets it apart. 6.1/10

Very good

It’s a solid rock and roll album. I wouldn’t go out of my way to play it again, but if I was at a sock hop this would get everybody dancing.

Pretty good. Pretty dated sound with that basic rock n roll style but that's to be expected from the 50s. 2.5/5 -> 3/5

The songs are all very short. It’s not my favorite genre of music. I would not listen again.

It is hard to deny the influence this record and Little Richard in general has had. However, there is only so much variation you can have within a twelve bar blues structure and eventually the album got quite boring.

Ready Teddy and Long Tall Sally personal faves - not an album I would necessarily revisit as I feel like this era of music is best on like compilation albums to filter out stuff that wasn't super timeless, but props for fun/upbeat/inventive music

The guy loves singing about chicks, which you have to respect

pretty cool

Short and sweet. This is some good 50s that just gets you tapping. Not really any depth to it but there didn't need to be, just a fun time. I remember singing tutti frutti in an elementary school concert, I'd be interested to hear our rendition against that of Little Richard.

3.5 Fun

Love and grew up on this kind of music. However this genre of music definitely falls under the "every song sounds the same". So while I loved it I wouldn't listen all in one shot like this again.

I enjoyed this, would listen again

Good, but not my style

He's so unusual.

You know, it’s pretty good. Well performed. The songs are catchy and fun. Dude’s got a good voice and good performance energy. It’s just that old-fashioned rock and roll is not my thing.

He was wild, he was brash, he was almost as weird as Screamin' Jay Hawkins. He frightened the white folks. For all that, he is memorable, but please don't make me listen to an entire album.

Nice but a lot of it sounded rehashed

Bangin' piano.

It was okay. Its an early rock and roll album so most of the songs sounds the same.

A master class in soul with all of the hits we all love. Great energy and rhythms, paired with an exuberant and passionate voice. This is a really fun listen.

Joa ne

Very energetic and fun. It's weird hearing him talk in between tracks, because his natural speaking voice is so high.

interesting theres fade in fade outs between the songs. kinda robs it of an album feel, but i doubt that was the intention to make something album oriented. kinda repetitive, but still enjoyable.

Old school. Took me back to my childhood.

It’s a good album but I don’t know if I’d listen to it on my own.

Lots of sounds here that I think became common after - would have been an awesome live show

This is probably the most important record in this entire collection, if not the most important it's at least in the top 5. Without this there's no Beatles, there's no Stones and definitely no Elvis (lol). However, as with every proto-record, it's not as good as what will come after it. The 12 songs are not even "basically" the same, they're exactly the same so I do appreciate that it's not an hour long record. The energy is amazing, Little Richard is still one of a kind and his vocals are absolutely bonkers, this one is definitely a must listen for every rock aficionado. It didn't really speak to my 20-something year old self, but I can still appreciate it for what it is. No best/worst song for this one because they really are identical in every single possible way. 3.4/5

This is the one with "Tutti Frutti". Little Richard's Rock 'n' Roll remains as virile as when it premiered; full of swagger and optimism. Because of it's 12 bar blues structure, the songs don't tend to be all that interesting, which means Richard's vocal performance has to carry most of the songs. For the most part he does. His energy is infectious. An innovator who is absolutely essential to understanding contemporary music. RIP - Little Richard.

3.5★. Imagine how hard this must have slapped on the jukebox.

well that was fun! little richard’s influence on the beatles and thus on rock & roll is foundational to the genre so it’s fun to hear that. his energy is incredible…yeah, the songs all sound pretty much exactly the same, but it’s FUN and SEXY!!! this is music for dancing. it ain’t complicated but i had a good time.

I think a lot of blues of this era kinda just sounds the same to me. So it was pleasant listening to have on in the background but I don't have a lot of strong feelings about it.
