Reviews (page 5 of 13)
This was good fun! A strong voice and great rhythms and instrumentation.
A bit repetitive but so much fun. What a great band and his delivery on every song is like it’s the last he’ll ever give. Can see how the Brits were like holy shit this rules.
Didn't know most songs, it was pretty good, enjoyed it overall. Full of energy and strong singing
First album from 50's, but a solid one. I knew Tutti Frutti, but I thought the rest of the album was very enjoyable to listen to.
Pretty much every single track on this album is 12 bar blues. Which isn't surprising considering the age of the album, and im sure it was ground breaking at the time, but the lack of variety does make it feel a bit dated in 2025. I did enjoy all of the tracks but its hard to go wrong with such basic rock and roll. The voice is fantastic. Really versatile, whether screaming, shouting or going for those gospel vibes, vocally is where the album does get to shine. No one favourite track. 7.5/10
It's very much variations on a theme - but what a theme. And Little Richard's energy is still infectious.
I think this album purely deserves a 4 at least already for just the importance it has for music. Apart from also just being a good little listen. It’s the 50s though so like everything it’s just way too happy-go-lucky but that’s the era I guess. Dylan sure did get it right though when he said “[Little Richard] even screamed like a holy preacher—which is what he was.”
Less a traditional album and more a collection of singles. Nevertheless, I had never realized how many songs I knew originated as Little Richard tracks. His vocal performance is the standout, making the material hold up in a way that some of the other rock and roll pioneers’ work does not.
I had always read that The Beatles listed Little Richard as one of their early influences but I guess I never fully understood it until I listened to this album. So many legendary artists have songs or entire albums that are so similar to this sound but Little Richard was doing it in the 50s!
Major props to the godfather
like im always sayin - wop bop a-loo bop a-lop bam boom
Rock and roll patient zero. Not only is this a deeply important album, but it's also freakin good. Little Mr. Richard's got some pipes on him. Now, I can only listen to mostly-the-same 12-bar blues for so long, but luckily this little nugget only clocks in at like half an hour. 4 stars.
Det va omtrent som forventa og veldig raskt unnagjort. Gøy, men ikke så mye mer.
Voikohan mennä legendaarisemmaksi levyksi, klassikommaksi? Tässä ollaan kaiken nykymusiikin alkujuurilla.
It's hard not to give this album a 5. It's such a foundational piece of music history, and quite the introduction to a legendary musical talent destined to influence everything after him. The album suffers a bit from its lack of variety when viewed as a whole. It almost becomes too much of a good thing. Nonetheless, what a terrific debut for Little Richard.
Sounds like progress and the start of the rock n roll era
She tutti on my frutti. Cool rock n roll vibes
Cool, je kiff bien le délire boogie woogie année 20/30
The energy on this album is amazing and infectious. The songs are composed flawlessly, and the way Little Richard uses his voice is incredible - not just as a vehicle for the lyrics but as an instrument and the way he expresses emotion. Album is literally full of high, high quality from front to back. No skips on this album at all.
Haven't heard this album in full, but have heard most of these tracks before. I've always enjoyed this kind of music and I rate it highly.
Very cool stuff! Must be one of the oldest albums on this list and first rock n roll album I am getting. I believe I haven't listened to the guys like Little Richard in many years. This is some great music, several great hits like Long Tall Sally or Tutti Frutti and the rest of the songs are decent but kind of samey and following similar formulas. Based on musicality I would give this either 3 or 4 stars, but because this is basically a debut from the architect himself I will increase it to 4 stars cause so many of my favourite artists wouldn't exist without this!
Well, that was a fun one. Both rhythmic and bluesy.
What a force! Tutti Frutti is a blast. Some of the other songs are, predictably, a bit silly, but man can Little Richard make them sound good. Oooo!
Great Songs: Tutti Frutti, Can’t Believe You Wanna Leave, Ready Teddy, Baby, Miss Ann, Oh Why?, Rip It Up, Jenny Jenny, She’s Got It Good Songs: True, Fine Mama, Slippin’ and Slidin’, Long Tall Sally, Mid Songs: Bad Songs:
Imagine putting a new record on and Wap Bama lumab a wop bam boom! Exciting stuff.
Great album
Excellent fun bunch of oldies
He certainly has lots of energy and it is a short album. I do enjoy the jazz and early rock sounds.
Like I neglected the website for a couple of days and to come back to this after some sad stuff was very welcome, I also respect that little Richard is pretty much THE original with rock n roll. Maybe the actual content is 3/5 but with context it’s a 4/5
Dude can bop!
Lots of fun, especially song one.
All the songs kind of sound the same but they all kind of rule too. I can see why Little Richard is revered. It makes me feel like I’m in a club in the 1950s when I listen to this. Great opening
Schon n paar banger dabei
Such a bop and high energy, but i think as a whole album, it starts sounding very similar. But I feel like i'm not listening to it as it was meant to be listened to.
i love a 12 bar blues
bem bom especialmente quando a música NÃO É ROUBADA (alo vc sabe quem)
bem melhor que o elvis presley, né pedradaça. dá pra ficar ouvindo isso aqui o dia inteiro, gostosim demais!!
Absolute party until at least Long Tall Sally which was still fun to dance to but felt a little duplicative from Tutti Frutti (and again on rip it up). Great vocals; drums and sax throughout and some interesting lyrics (oh why?) but a little repetitive. So fun to dance to. 4.1
Honestly, this is awesome! Great song after great song delivered with feeling and just straight up rocking.
Classic
Tutti frutti rocks. Everything sounds great 70 years later.
Really good for '57, foundational for so many records on this list
Favorite Track: Tutti Frutti
Little Richard can sing. I really enjoy his voice. I love 'whoos' (personally think they are better than The Beatles imitations - even though 'She Loves You' rates as one of my favourite songs! How about that?). And, I enjoyed every song on this album. In saying that, there was no variation on this album. I put it on, my son said 'This is great music', and it was. But, each song followed the same progression, had the same sort of performance. Am I a wimp for wanting a ballad? Yes. But, the blues progression was so prominent, it almost felt like listening to a punk album where everything sounded the same throughout. It put me in a great mood though. 4 Stars.
This is like befriending a person “in the know” of underground dance halls and nightclubs that thrive in the time of prohibition. After going down a dark alley, and talking your way past the quiet giant that guards the door, you head into a nondescript hall, only to be met with an explosion of light, colour, sound and revelry. It is as if this small community have been keeping themselves under control for the working week, and are finally in a situation where they can celebrate all the joys of life. You normally don’t like dancing, but here you feel safe gyrating your hips and even flailing your shoulders.
I think it is impossible to listen to the album and not tap your foot. Little Richard did amazing things for Rock and Roll, and this album exemplifies that.
Little Richard is one of the Four Fathers of Rock ‘n’ Roll (Lloyd Price; Ray Charles & Bo Diddley are the other three). This album is infectious with untapped energy and raw emotion. This was really made for the dance hall and it shows in each song leaving you Slippin’ and Slidin’. I have no memory of life without Little Richard, and still have no idea what Tutti Fruitti is actually about. It took years for me to learn that Long Tall Sally was also not a really tall girl named Sally. He definitely had a penchant for writing about women (see above and Miss Ann, and Jenny, Jenny). I don’t think anyone can doubt the influence that Little Richard had on music. It’s funny that he started his career as a drag queen and never shied away from who he was…he just put on a suit.
Random thoughts: * what a voice and influence?!? There is no one like Little Richard * to be black and effeminate, you know this music had to be something great to overcome the social barriers of his day. * all of the songs are bops. He’s super talented. * Classic foundation of the rock n roll to come. True trailblazer.
Muy bueno, aunque suene antiguo
A WOP BOP A LOO BOP A LOP BA BA
Exhuberant! There's something so delightfully energetic and youthful about this collection of songs. The feeling of the weekend arriving, having a pocket full of money and being ready to hit the town. Anything is possible. And then Little Richard manages to pioneer a whole new music genre while he's at it.
crazy to think the first seconds of this are instantly recognisable almost 70 years later
Great, energetic listen. Very fun and influential
SO MUCH FUN!! My toes were tappin'.
This is awesome. I love it. Nothing else to say here. I’m almost inclined to give it 5 stars. This music is the basis.
Not much left to say about the architect of rock and roll, and one of the pioneers of the genre. I was already aware of who Little Richard is and the impact of his music, but I never took the time to fully listen to one of his albums. As expected I already knew "Tutti Frutti" and "Long Tall Sally". His songs, even though they only last about 2 -3 minutes they are frenetic, with the exception of 2 slower songs (always appreciate in my opinion, 'cause otherwise It will be a bit overwhelming). I was laying on my bed when I started listen to the album and ended up dancing all over my room; I think that describes pretty good how brilliant this album is.
Incredible voice and energy. I imagine seeing him perform this live when it came out was like watching an alien. Sound is dated at this point but it's a quick run time and and insane debut album.
Fun dancey vibes on a lot of these tracks slightly bewildered by the decision to put 5 different takes of the same song on side 2 but I guess it was novel at least
This album was such a bop and one of the strongest debut albums I’ve listened to on here. I don’t know how you could not love this music and have a good time while listening to it. This is a perfect marriage of rock and roll and rhythm and blues and I would 100% listen to this album again.
Of its time but really great, Tutti Fruity is probably my favourite song from this period and this genre. Little Richard is the G.O.A.T when it comes to rock and roll in the 1950’s and has an amazing and iconic voice and this album shows it but it does get a little repetitive for a 28 minute album, especially with some of the songs sounding like reskins of others ,although he practically helped invent this style of music so exceptions can be made. Favourites: pretty much all except maybe the slower love ones which were still good but not as much as the fun ones (most of the album is the fun ones fortunately). Overall, 8/10.
4/5 Best Track - "Long Tall Sally"
Jenny Jenny with backvocals and he stumbles down at the end. 11/10
A blast of fun rock ’n’ roll, full of raw energy and wild performance. You can feel how much life and excitement he poured into every track.
WOOOOOOOO!!!! All hail the TRUE king of Rock and Roll.
The boss!
Awesome!
Are you Ready Teddy?? Cause this album makes sure to Rip It Up. Solid across the board.
This was good stuff
I mean...4
🗯 If rock ’n’ roll has a Big Bang, this is one of the loudest. A lot of people owe Little Richard a lot — Otis Redding, James Brown, Etta James, Richard Berry, Big Al Downing, Thurston Harris — and that’s before you even get to the ones who re-recorded these very songs: The Beatles, Elvis, Buddy Holly, The Everly Brothers, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, John Fogerty, Mitch Ryder, the Rolling Stones. The very definition of immeasurable influence (seriously, read his Wiki). This debut was billed as “six of Little Richard’s hits and six brand new songs of hit calibre,” and they weren’t lying. You’ve got ‘Tutti Frutti,’ ‘Long Tall Sally,’ ‘Slippin’ and Slidin’,’ ‘Rip It Up,’ ‘Jenny, Jenny,’ plus R&B Best-Sellers like ‘Ready Teddy,’ ‘She’s Got It,’ and ‘Miss Ann.’ I don’t always gravitate to the old-school rock ’n’ roll sound, but when I do, I love it — and this is pure Saturday-night energy. Takes me right back to being a kid, dancing with Mum to the Jukebox Saturday Night playlist on local radio. 🗯 If rock ’n’ roll has a Big Bang, this is one of the loudest. Experiencing the emergence of Little Richard in 1957 must’ve been like getting hit by a bolt of lightning in the dark. He’s everything that time wasn’t, and the next time would be. The album’s chaotic, joyful, and still has the power to blow the roof off. Verdict: Essential (in context) For fans of: Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, and the roots of rock in its purest, wildest form Experiencing the emergence of Little Richard in 1957 must’ve been like getting hit by a bolt of lightning in the dark. Good 4.2
Good stuff, classic Little Richard
Great album by a legend
Yep, that's some good shit.
Saying this has "historical value" would be an understatement, since it’s quite literally the birth of Rock’n’Roll Among all the original forefathers of Rock’n’Roll, Little Richard has always been my favorite. His enthusiasm is absolutely insane, and his voice has a special quality that makes me feel warm and fuzzy, even if I can’t really explain why. He has an amazing presence that makes it impossible for me to not smile whenever I hear him. Sure, it’s very gimmick-ish, relying on basically the same structure repeated over and over again... but I don’t really mind. The level of energy thoughout the album is crazy - even 70 years later, many bands can’t even dream to approach it. In the end I’ll go for a 4* because it’s still a bit rough around the edges, with a murky sound (hard to avoid with pre-1960 records) and songs that all sound a bit too similar to each other.
Kind of shocking what 3 and 4 chord progressions did to music in the 50's. The power, the energy, the flair. That said, it gets really repetitive in 2025 for my taste.
Favourites: Tutti Frutti; Ready Teddy; Long Tall Sally (The Thing); Miss Ann; Rip It Up; Jenny, Jenny; She's Got It
Pretty good. Sounds a lot like Elvis but I'm not sure who came first. Probably this guy if his nickname is anything to go by.
Very upbeat album which I enjoyed.
Tutti Frutti, OK! Classic, fun to hear again.
Great album by a one of a kind artist
Excellent classic rock and roll, IMO an important listen that demonstrates how we got from jazz/big band to where we are today.
The studio doesn't really capture what makes Little Richard great. Giving it 4 stars because it's Little Richard. No Little Richard, no Beatles. No Little Richard, No Prince. No Justice, No Peace.
Goddam that's good. I listened to LR a little bit after listening to the first 30-40 episodes of "A history of rock music in 500 songs" but I don't think I appreciated just how good this is, or how revolutionary it must have seemed in the late 50s. I keep thinking about John Prine's lyric, "At the beach in Indiana, I was nine years old… I heard Little Richard singing tutti-frutti from the top of a telephone pole." Imagine being that kid.
Incredable voice
Tutti frutti was the best song but after that it got a little boring. Still fun though. Low 4.
Learned about him (and listened to some of this album) in roots of rock and roll. Interesting dude, fun listen
Lots of energy. A fun listen.
Crazy high energy and fun. I typically dont listen to music from this era but for him ill make an exception. My one gripe is that the music quality is fuzzy, but theres nothing to be done about that I suppose.
One of a handful of modern music founding fathers. This album definitely belongs on the list.
This one's tough. It's all very catchy and has genuinely good melodies. However, It's almost all 12-bar blues. You can anticipate the chord and melody changes every time. Pretty simple structure but he made the most of it.
Very enjoyable classic good diamond album. Surprise Track: Oh Why? 4/5
4.5 all killer
Really fun record from when rock n’ roll was real dance music. It’s Jaunty Rock, and wow the lyrics and vocals pop!
Very good classic.
Foe a collection of songs from the 50s, it totally stands up. You can see the roots of rap, rock, punk and so much else. Absolutely deserves to be on this list and is a necessary listen for music fans. So why only 4 stars? The last track is about the sexual appeal of a 12 year old girl. Yeah, that hasn't aged well.
WOP BOP A LOO BOP A LOP BAM BOOM Sometimes old school bedrock-era rock and roll is corny and pedestrian to my modern ears, and then other times I’m reminded that it was once the gutsiest, horniest, most banging shit ever put to record. This is good stuff. The energy is infectious.
Overall: 8/10 I think Little Richard is my favourite of all the early rock n' roll stars. He had such a powerful voice and maybe more than anyone, he was able to show off his personality in his vocals. This album still suffers from the issue that most 50s rock does and that's the fact that the songs start to sound the same after a bit. It's not as much of an issue here as I just love this dude so much. Fav Song: Slippin' and Slidin' (Peepin' and Hidin') Least Fav Song: Ready Teddy
Incredibly catchy and easy listening music. I had never listened to an album by L.R but I thoroughly enjoyed each song and will keep this on repeat for a while I think!
A full box of sock hop slappers from the legendary boogie-woogie spazz. It is, however a little redundant.
Loved it, tutti fruti, had Norah dancing!
A lot of fun and easy to listen to, but basically just variations on the same two songs.
Litt dans på lokkale for min smak, men klart det svinger, det gjør jo det.
Loved it!
yes yes yeeeees
It’s cool to hear this earlier piano-based rock before the guitar really took over. Favorite Track: Tutti Frutti
It has Tutti Frutti, Ready Teddy and Long Tall Sally.
To 1957, this must have been like a fabulous meteorite crashing into Earth. Absolutely flew by! Favourite tracks: Can't Believe You Wanna Leave, Oh Why?, Rip It Up
This was a lot of fun. Although I expect it would start to wear on me after a while as it is pretty samey.
End to end bops that left an indelible mark on modern music. I don’t want to flatten his life by calling Little Richard simply tragic but in the afterglow of Pride season, it’s a reminder of the joy homophobia robs us of as individuals and communities.
This goes pretty hard, actually (once you get past Tutti Frutti and the sub-Flair quality wooing). I'm a sucker for early rock and roll stuff. Really 3.5 but I'm rounding up for historical and cultural reasons.
Un classico...
This album was fantastic. Not too long, high energy, and vocally phenomenal. Little Richard is full to the brim with talent and soul. This is the type of album you would likely expect to see on a generator like this, and it well deserves its spot. It was such a breath of fresh air.
Fantastic, I've never listened to him before!
Hard to go wrong with Little Richard. It's just fun.
Great little album. Did anyone do early era rock n roll better than Little Richard? You can see why he influenced so many of the great artists that came through shortly after him. The musicianship is superb and just a fun listen all round.
Pretty hard not to love the energy of this guy, and have maximum respect for his place in the creation of rock and roll. The songs may be old, but there is something about them that still feels fresh somehow. I think it’s just the unbridled joy and simplicity they have about them, and did I mention the energy.
Fun and upbeat songs. So many bluesy 1 4 5 progressions. But I thought it was easy listening and worth a replay.
Взрывной рок-н-ролл в исполнении одного из корифеев этого жанра. 7 из 10.
Explosive half hour, fun all the way trough
Superb sound, especially his exploding vocals. Only thing stopping it being a perfect album is the songs following the exact same formula (but what a formula).
Where it all begins. The nonsensical scream heard around the world.
Oh yeah Rip It Up. What a cracking little album.
A solid album, though only the singles really stood out. I could be wrong, but I don't remember there being too much variation in the catalog
Here's Little Richard is the debut album by American musician Little Richard, released on March 4, 1957. Promoted as "six of Little Richard's hits and six brand new songs of hit calibre", the album compiles many of the A-sides and B-sides from Richard's hit singles including the Billboard top 40 entries "Tutti Frutti", "Long Tall Sally", "Slippin' and Slidin'", "Rip It Up" and "Jenny, Jenny" and the top 10 Rhythm and Blues Best-Sellers hits "Ready Teddy", "She's Got It" and "Miss Ann".
Little Richard is fun. I liked this album. I would absolutely listen to it again!
Revolutionary is the best thing to call it. Little Richard took 12 bar blues it made it just an absolute vibe.
Seminal, yes, also super simple sounding to contemporary ears. Sax is strong throughout and the whole thing is fun to listen, thanks to the direct, tight playing (the upside of simplicity, one supposes). "Rip It Up" and "Oh, Why" are among the standouts. Rounding up (if only a little) because it's straight-up cool (if seemingly old-fashioned today) and because he didn't get to be – though he should have been – Elvis, basically.
Good time

Yes he is the OG but every song sounds like tutti frutti with different words??
Infectious beats. I love his lyrical cadence too ⭐⭐⭐⭐½
Good
Can’t Believe You Wanna Leave’ gelust. Beste: Rip It Up / She’s Got It / Can’t Believe You Wanna Leave Minste: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Albumhoes: 5/5 schreeuwende zwartwit foto op knal oranje en boldass lettergebruik, I dig it.
It's hard to believe that Little Richard was making this music in the 50's. It seems old fashioned from today's standard, but for the time it was incredibly prescent.
Classic
It's Little Richard, flames.
This is great
Punk rock!
I named my cat after Tutti Frutti. I love this lil Dick guy. and so cool that he invented audio clipping
Tutti fruttttiiiiii!!!!
These are the roots of modern rock n roll. Little Richard broke the rules and never looked back. The songs weren’t sophisticated, but many are memorable and carry forward to this day. Although I’m not a huge fan, I can’t deny his influence.
Pleasantly refreshing and groovy. Loved the baseline, instrumentation, and originality of the music. Did get a little worn out by the walking bass but the album was short and sweet. Will definitely revisit
Classic rock'n'roll.
The essence of R&R. The holly trinity with Elvis and Chuck Berry
Classics! Tt's more than just an album that is rated here, it's classics songs (tutt frutti, long tall Sally) and the personna (dance, and shouts) that is Little Richard that both contributes to defines the then budgeonning rock', n roll. As Jon Lord of Deep Purple said "There would have been no Deep Purple if there had been no Little Richard."
A classic.
So much fun! The entire album just keeps a smile on your face. Little Richard brings the energy and keeps it going the whole time. Starts with the classic Tutti Frutti. True Fine Mama is a lot of fun. Can't Believe You Wanna Leave is just great, with some incredible trumpet music. The rest of the album keeps it all going. I had a blast. Could have been 5 stars if the songs weren't all a bit same-y, but still a total romp. Best song: Tutti Frutti
Not really something I'm likely to put into the rotation, but considering the impact it had and the era it came from it's a bop
Great vibes all around. Had me bopping my head and snapping my fingers while at the gym. Some songs I didn’t realize were his, too. Really enjoyed tutti fruity
Fun listen
This whole thing just kept reminding me of Elvis during True fine mama (aka Bad bad Leroy brown bc it the sounds the same to me) All I wanted to go was get up and do some boot scootin Ready teddy gave me jailhouse rock vibes Slippin and slidin reminded me of a song a dance teacher would choose for 5 year old tap dance class most of these songs made me feel that they would be fun to know the words to and be able to sing along. After I listened to this I ended up listening to a bunch of songs from the 50s I love the up beat old school vibes Highlights “rip it up” I listened to every take
This isn’t just an album, it’s a lightning strike caught on tape. Here's Little Richard is pure, unfiltered rock and roll in its most joyful, explosive form. Every track is delivered with a level of energy that feels genuinely dangerous, even today. The screaming vocals, the pounding piano, the slamming backbeat — it all bursts out of the speakers like it’s trying to outrun itself. Songs like Tutti Frutti, Long Tall Sally, and Rip It Up aren’t just classics, they’re blueprints for everything that came after. The real power of this album lies in its balance of rawness and control. Richard was a master showman, but he knew exactly how to pace a performance. His piano playing is fast and fierce, but never messy, and the band behind him — including future legends like Earl Palmer on drums — is tight and responsive, giving every song the propulsion it needs without getting in the way. There’s a sweaty nightclub feel to the whole thing, like the band is two minutes away from setting fire to the stage. Here's Little Richard isn’t just important, it’s exhilarating. It sounds like someone threw rhythm and blues into a blender with gospel fire and teenage rebellion. Even the slower tracks like Can’t Believe You Wanna Leave have grit and flair. This is what it sounds like when music is alive. It’s a definitive rock and roll debut, and it still hits like a freight train in full swing. Essential, iconic, unstoppable.
Incredibly influential and he can really sing. The songs do start to sound very similar after a while, but that's not really a surprise, defo a good listen
4/5
A WOP BAMALOOBA A WOP BAM BOOM 10/10 opening. the ick factor in some of the songs because ~it was a different time~ but, still. However he does sing 'spinny spinny WHOOOO spinny spiiiin' with his whole chest so I'll forgive him. not sure I can listen to this now without thinking of the snatch game, but then again, that's not necessarily a negative thing
You can almost hear all the white people stealing his style in the decades following this release!
short sharp and full of beats to get the foot tapping from beginning to end. such an important album in the growth of pop music. I am not going to own it, but i would listen to this again for sure. 4 stars
The energy is off the charts and it still feels fresh almost 70 years later. There is a bit of fatigue with the style by the end but overall a great time.
Quality
Thought this album was pretty good.
So much energy on this album. Starts off with a bang and never stops. Shortness helps the album too. Score is also based on history of album and what it meant for music
Honestly, pretty good. I love how closely related you can tell rock is to R&B and blues. These were def songs to listen to live imo tho. I liked it, oooooooooooooo
This is the man who helped invented rock and roll. Thus, its pretty good.
very solid and very repetitive.
This album was really fun to listen to! I know Little Richard was one of the founders of rock n roll and this album really proved that.
This is fun but it all kinda sounds the same. He very talented singer.
Soul/R&B. Pretty lean but some of the songs were sounding pretty similar. Still a fun listen.
Foundational rock and roll
Banger. Classic rock and roll. Classic entertainer.
Fun
Pretty cool, I've never listened to any songs except the big hits.
Great album to clean the kitchen too
Great, little too old timey
This is amazing for an album released almost 70 years ago. The songs are just timeless and Little Richard's infectous energy just goes right through the digital soundwaves.
Little Richard - icon
High energy fun. More like a 3.5 because I don't anticipate listening to this a ton, but it's still very delightful.
This made me think of Mean Gene Okerlund and Predator and that’s pretty fuckin cool.
Exciting and fun! I really enjoyed Richard‘s voice and energy. This felt like a time travel and took me to the fifties to dance. The recording is not the greatest quality - but it adds to the charme.
It was alright. Not for me
Slaps harder than Elvis, makes you wanna dance. Not every song is a stone cold banger but Little Richard absolutely stakes his claim of being the true king of rock and roll.
I really liked it. A lot of energy. Simple lyrics, great voice with a lot of range and character. Short quick songs. Fun
Never listened to much Little Richard aside from Tutti Frutti and seeing him in sitcom cameos, but I found myself really enjoying this old school rock and roll record. Standouts: 'Ready Teddy', 'Long Tall Sally'
Passionate, energetic vocals over early rock music
All rock and roll and blues sounded the same in those times, but there is something about Little Richard that just makes me be not bored. He has a great voice and style. Love this album.
4/7
Maybe Elvis should have been a 3 - I enjoyed this lots more. Great energy, you really get a sense of his charisma through the record. A good birthday listen.
So much energy, so many of his best known songs.
Honestly not bad very blues/jazzy. Oh why gave mad Blood Brothers vibes and I liked umm Rip it up and tutti frutti was a good start imo. Definitely not something I’d usually listen to (esp not when doing an a level maths paper whoops) but quiet nice actually I didn’t think so but yeah, solid strong start I’d say
Really good but it's hard to ignore how much every song feels the same but at least they're all good
One of the first Rock and Rollers-- and for that huge props. You can't judge a 50's NBA player against todays talent and so I will give Little Richard the same leeway.
I get it but would not put it on just to listen.
The innovator, the originator, the architect of rock and roll.
I liked this. I want to say that his enthusiasm seems so genuine, but that’s not quite right.
Great old time rock and roll
This album shows you why LR is as famous as he is. Good vibes all around
Classic rock n roll sound
Samey in the best way. Ideal soundtrack for packing up a flat on a sunny day. Love the change if pace from the last few albums, love the drums
Fun rock and roll. Upbeat and exciting.
Cocaína para el corazón. Jugo de naranja para la cabeza.
Enjoyed this in the same way I enjoyed Buddy Holly. It's pretty repetitive and a little boring, but so obviously influential on all the rock and pop music that came after it. He has a great voice, would have been amazing to see home live I'd say. He does sound like a bit of a creep though, some of the lyrics haven't aged well!
Quite fun album tbh. The dancefloors in the late 50s must have been on fire with this one.
This man was an absolute titan is his day, and modern music owes so much to his creative and innovative musical ideas. It's no surprise that this album allowed him to burst onto the scene in the late 50s - it's absolutely bursting with energy and emotion. Richard's voice has a commanding presence, and you can truly tell how much FUN he was having. Would have been amazing to see him perform live in his prime. That said, I'm glad the album itself is only a half hour. As a drummer myself, I can only handle listening to so much 12 bar blues at a time, lol.
Under the blanket of rock 'n' roll music lies heavy metal.
Really did something here
Had me bopping in my seat
This album really surprised me for the better. I know Little Richard is iconic, but I can't believe I've only heard snippets of Little Richard's songs and never them in full. This album was so much fun. His voice is incredible and electric and each song is interesting. It's clear that he inspired many musicians that came after him. While I'm not the biggest fan of this genre, this changed my mind. I could see myself listening to this on my own. 4/5
uuh good start to this project! Nice (sooo BLACK AMERICAN) soul, rock and roll jazzy albym from 57' to start my journey :)
Definitely a classic.
He’s a horny bordering on sleazy fucker, but man can he rock. The template for dirty rock n roll.
Classic rock n roll fused with boogie woogie piano and a smattering of the blues, Little Richard was a definite musical pioneer
lots of fun songs on the album but they also all sound almost exactly the same. no doubt it’s a foundation for much of our music today!
Ah I do love this - how can you not, it’s foundational - but equally found it a bit difficult to eat a whole one. If it was just rate a track it’d probably be 5, but I think I have to take into account that I did get pretty twitchy halfway through. So, 4. Probably 4.5 in my heart.
If Little Richard was in the rap game, he would've been Lil' Rich-X
Every track was a joy! Some were a bit samey, though
I remember the day back in 2020 when Little Richard died. I listened to every album he had, obviously starting here. One of the pioneers of rock n’ roll. True legend. Limitless inspiration. His boundless energy on this album makes its relatively short runtime feel jam packed with power. Not a dud on the whole thing. It’s like, whatever song he’s given, he will make the most out of and perform the shit out of. Great showman. Only complaint is that the band doesn’t seem to be able to keep up with him. 200% effort guys, come on. Let’s keep up. 4/5
The Good: There’s nothing Little about this Richard!! The Bad: This means that we are being lied to… The Ugly: Realizing this is not a pr0n name… What is there to say about this album that has not been said before? It is full of classic tunes, and gratefully they don’t last too long either. Why the gratitude? Well, though Little Richard has showmanship and style, it kind-a starts irritating after a while… Just like you don’t want to listen to Axl Rose belt more than 2-3 songs in a row, before the ahw-a-ahw starts to make you want to punch the next person you see in the groin, the same can be said about the “WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO” that LR belts out. So, I remember buying this album in the early ‘80s as I was discovering the origins of Rock ’n Roll, and I loved it… today, I tapped my toe, and enjoyed the ride, however, unlike Fats Domino or Louis Prima, I found this album to not knock me off my feet. 4* stars as I do fully understand the importance of this record in the grand scheme of things...
Not the hugest fan of 50s rock, but this is far better than Elvis. I actually like everything except Tutti Frutti.
Classic stuff even if it is a little reductive
Little Richard is just so good. I've only heard his first two albums but they are totally indisputable (though I prefer his second one). Unbelievably control of his voice and so full of passion!
Rock and roll that's actually good????
this guy was lowkey the goat (of music and being a bisexual pervert) also crazy he died this decade ??
very good
let's boogie
Fun, energetic, a product of its time with a solid voice. I’m glad this existed to others could be influenced. True essence of music. Just of bygone time.
great for it is. recognized some iconic needledrops.
How can you not enjoy the shit out of this
Definitely a product of its time, but fun.
This is pure rock n roll. Pretty much every band has its influenced traced to Little Richard. What a pioneer and what great energy he brings. Some of these songs fall flat, but that's no fault of Richard, he's always the best part
Standard setting
His sheer energy and moxie exude from this album. It's hard not to tap your toe, even to a breakup song like, "Can't Believe You Wanna Leave." Absolute legend.
This album still has so much energy despite being almost 70 years old. Really, really fun record
4 - the OG. Just good ol rock n roll
Well, for starters I absolutely love this album! Little Richard's energy is undeniable and the band is right there with him. I especially like it when you can hear his voice overwhelm the microphone. This is what the birth of a movement sounds like folks. My older sisters and brothers had the singles when I was a mere tot, so this brings back some great memories!
This was good, and the influence is undeniable. It's also really just a collection of songs more than an album, and some shine more than others.
So fruity. So great.
I try not to let any one song dramatically change my impression of the album but Tutti fruity on Ruiuuudytutty fruity O WAMNA WAMNADAMAMA or something like that It’s fun and classic , seriously how is this 1959 and sound this good ?! It does get kinda repetitive over the course of the 40 mins or so
Remember when Sylvester Stallone sang Tutti Fruitti in Rhinestone? Great movie.
"Tutti Frutti" is great! I don't even really dance, but I can't help but tap my feet and fingers to the beat!
Iconic. 4.7/5
Love it, it’s just so cool. Strong 4.
This is just pure, distilled, old-timey fun. Doesn't quite hold up til today sound quality wise, however, I don't think any comparison to modern releases would be fair. The album also offers little variety in terms of tone and tempo, but I guess this was just the style at the time. Listening experience: 4/5 Deserves to be on this list: 5/5
Incredible. I loved it. It's easy to at first say that it sounds so familiar, but that's because everyone else was imitating him. I loved also, reading about this album how so many other artists were huge fans of his at the time and appreciated his new style including Bob Dylan.
This album is so much better than the first Elvis record from the same era. I could listen to this and bop it around. Little Richard really had some soul coming out of his voice.
Another historic album that feels like... History to me. Probably will never revisit.
classic
I liked this bum and found a lot of joy hearing the early freedom expression of rock music. Not the most technical playing, but doesn't need to be. A foundational album in the history of rock music and a well deserved record on this list. 7/10
Trochę na jedno kopyto wszystko, ale ogólnie bop
I believe Little Richard would have been as popular as Elvis but for racial prejudice and homophobia in the conservative 1950's landscape. Despite this, his influence on music and culture in general is undeniable.
This probably sounded absolutely bonkers in 1957. You can see the influence it had on popular music that followed it and I bet you could count this is one of the first rock and roll albums. High energy, with a couple of traditionally slower tunes to even things out, and focused on the voice/lead instrument. "Tutti Frutti", "Ready Teddy", "Jenny Jenny", and "Long Tall Sally" might as well be the same song, but it's a good song so it's fine. The little falsetto punches, the instrumental cuts, and the high tempo make them all fun to listen to and probably were revolutionary at the time. The rest is all totally listenable and fun.
I imagine every show he must have played in 1956 looked like when Otis Day and the Knights showed up at Delta House. I don't know a lot about music during this time period, but it seems to be ahead of the other bands that I am familiar with. I'm glad the song finally received the recognition it deserved when featured in hit film, The Brave Little Toaster.
it's odd how much difference a decade can make. in 1945, we won WWII, started building Levittowns, and were listening to Vera Lynn and Billie Holiday. that's not to say wild, swinging music hadn't existed beforehand, but it's not the sound you hear when you see a sailor making out with some random woman in the middle of Times Square. then, in ten years, before your kids are even old enough to understand what sex is, something Happens. call it the rise of popular music that wasn't exclusively white, call it the first true inkling of mass counterculture, call it whatever -- a thing happened to make Little Richard exist and put out "Tutti Frutti" in 1955. you can picture the troubled vet whose first exposure to music in the months after Normandy was probably a V-disc of slow torch song big band jazz that was thrown in the ocean after the war ended walking into the wrong club, where Little Richard happens to be playing. i can. but there is nothing i can do to understand how the man felt hearing this man, in a violent, sweaty rage against his piano, scream a song that is ostensibly about anal sex. was it disgust? shock? elation? arousal? some yet-unidentified fifth thing? another thing that happened in ten years -- the birth of the 33 and 1/3rd RPM record and our current concept of the album as it stands. i think we're a bit far from what we consider a "modern" album, but honestly this thing feels pretty tight and well structured for what amounts to a simple collection of songs. there's your high energy rocking numbers like "Ready Teddy" right before slower NOLA RnB numbers like "Baby", so it's not all high octane piano and sax solos for 27 minutes straight. as crazy as it seems, even Little Richard needs a breath in between blazes of energy.
Because of my dad, I grew up on 50s rock, so I've heard my fair share of Little Richard in my lifetime. However, I've never listened to this record all the way through. I'm excited tho! Favorite Track: Rip It Up Least Favorite Track: None Overall Score: 8/10
made me want to have a good boogie 🕺🕺
Incredibly fun, energetic, and influential. Short and sweet.
Here he is
sound has nostalgic elements that will continue to inspire persist long after its time. makes me think of summers in childhood, bbqs in the front yard and swimming pools with the sun beating down on us and icy soft drinks.
Tutti frutti
nice2 walm thru airbob to. Homolone
4/5
It all comes down to that voice. Just one of the most glorious things to ever happen to popular music—the grit, the bell-like tone, the vibrato, the precision runs. Set the template for every single belter and shouter to ever follow. Also has aged incredibly well. Not a note on this album sounds antiquated. Everything in it is still alive in the music today. Incredible. “Ready Teddy” is a ripper from start to finish.
3.5/5
grandios, packend und frisch auch nach mehr als 60 jahren.
Rock'n'Roll vom Feinsten! Und das alles in einem Umfeld wo Schwarz und Weiss eigentlich nicht die gleichen Konzerte besuchten oder dann in getrennten Saalteilen.
Jako ga volim! Slušala sam često sve pjesme s ovog albuma, iako mislim da nisam nikad (!) u komadu. Baš najs najs! 4/5, 8.5/10.
8/10 Ovo mi je easy prolaz. Uvijek volim cuti kako se rock'n'roll razvijao, a Little Richard mi je uvijek sjedao. Volio bi jos koji njegov album naci na ovom popisu, ovom ide debela osmica.
Foundational
Ba-dum bop-bee-dop, ba-dum-bee-do! I felt as if I was transported in time to a 1950s diner, and dancing with a woman on top of a table while a cook named Biff sings with us. Favorite song: "Tutti Frutti"
Phenomenal
Bop de be lou bop a bop bam boo! Fun 50’s music
50’s rock sound. Classic Little Richard
I love this music for working, cleaning, cooking, etc. It's high energy, generally positive, and makes you want to dance. Fav Tracks: Tutti Frutti, Ready Teddy, Rip It Up Least Fav Tracks: Jenny, Jenny
So fun! Got me dancing. Good Golly Miss Molly is still my fave though
Good but a bit samey in places
Good album!
Still a great listen due to the sheer energy on display.
3-4
Classic sound, high energy
4/5. It's impressive that most of these songs were written by Richard. With albums around this time, it's usually a series of older covers that do improve the original usually but these songs are all self-written. Although all of the songs are not super unique, they are fun and accessible. Put this album on and no one's gonna complain, just a grand time. Plus he sure can sing, excellent accompanying instrumentation as well. Best Song: Tutti Frutti, Long Tall Sally, Rip It Up
Oh, to have seen him live at his peak!
Very blues, old-fashioned vibes
No. 300/1001 Tutti Frutti 4/5 True, Fine Mama 4/5 Can't Believe You Wanna Leave 3/5 Ready Teddy 4/5 Baby 3/5 Slippin and Slidin 4/5 Long Tally Sally 3/5 Miss Ann 3/5 On Why? 4/5 Rip It Up 4/5 Jenny, Jenny 3/5 She's Got It 3/5 Average: 3,5 Classic early rock & roll record. Still fun to listen to.
Little Richard slaps
Very good old timey rock 'n' roll album from an important legend.
Wijs album. Swingy, rocky! Nen klassieker 4.2
A friend of mine got me into this challenge. I'm listening to these albums from Argentina. Here's Little Richard takes me to familiar places. Elvis-like rock&roll, boogie-woogie-sque basslines.
Whaphapalu Tutti Frutti uhhhh.
Fav song: She’s Got It Man this album is so much fun to listen to even all these years later! Fantastic performance from the entire band in an era where track recording was in its absolute infancy. A proper music time capsule and just great album all round.
Enjoyed this.
Solid album. Great voice, lots of energy. Shirt and snappy songs. I recognized a lot of
About as good as you can expect from an early rock and roll album. The singles are the obvious highlights, but none of the album cuts are bad by any means. 4/5
Vivacious and fun, truly classic, a little silly for me.
Yee
I was not very hopeful because while I understand the importance of music from this era I don't always like it. This was a lot better than anticipated however and I liked a lot of it.
Really good.
Tough one to rate. Such an influential and genuinely exciting artist, with some timeless singles they broke new ground and helped pop music become a thing. His genius deserves to be recognised in projects like this, although I'm not sure it translates to any specific album of his. And this record does get a bit repetitive with most songs following a similar formula (and one that so many artists have copied). I'd love to know what it felt like to listen to in 1957. Only thing I can really compare it to is listening to Oxide and Neutrino's 'Bound 4 Da Reload' in 2000 and realising the undeniable, raw power of the Casualty theme tune.
