Reviews (page 13 of 13)
lyrically not my taste, but musicality enjoyable when you're in the mood for oldies.
This surprised me. The musicianship and song writing are off the scale. Better than the vast majority of current chart hits. Not really my cup of tea but this is a very good album.
Pennies from heaven is an Elf classic but not here :( anyway Buona Sera is a 5/5 but the rest of the album is mere background noise
liked songs: Body And Soul, Banana Split For My Baby (for the lyrics alone) Very 50s, not bad. 2.5
I don't like this song because I don't like the beat and I think it is boring . the second one was better but I like to hear someone singing I dont recommend this album
the first song is not that good like it sounds like old music if yk wha im trying to say the background music is alr but its not that good the whole song is alr ig. the second song is lowk buns tio oms
To fajne, ale puste
Odd situation to be in where I like the execution but not the content. His wife slayed ngl. Did enjoy that I hardly noticed when he moved from all the I love my baby songs to that 'I wish you were dead' one because it was so jolly
Just found out that I do not need 32 minutes of Louis Prima.
I was previously familiar with a couple songs but didn't really know the artist. This isn't really the sort of music I would choose to listen to, but I do see the appeal. I doubt I would listen to this again.

This is pretty decent considering it's from the 50's but not anything I need to hear again. Definitely recognized his voice so was not surprised to read that he's King Louie (which was always a favorite part of TJB). "Buona Sera" and "Just a Gigolo" were the best tracks, was never a fan of "Jump, Jive" but also recognized that one. I liked the cymbal action and when he started singing in pure gibberish. Fun, upbeat listen, lot's of horns. This is prob the best we're gonna hear from the decade and wasn't the worst by any means. 2.0 for the monkey man.
One of the better examples of 50's music on the list. The songs were mostly high energy romps that were somewhat fun to listen to. I recognized Jump Jive and Wail from the BSO cover. Nothing I need to hear again but Louis Prima, who I wasn't previously familiar with, actually clocks in higher than some of the other earlier more well known artists. 1.67 stars
No. Not for me. I like jazz, I even like some jazz from this period but I definitely don't like this. A generous 2/5 from me.
Just really don't love jazz
Sounds like the band had fun making this one. It's lively and very much a product of its time. Not my thing, but not bad.
not my thing
not my vibe
A fun album but not great in most other aspects. It isn't an album that I would have ever listened to of my own free will but I'm not completely upset that I did. Overall probably a 3.5/10, not good but not 1 star worthy.
Not bad, but nothing really stood out to me. 2.5/5
Though it has some fun and wild performances, I feel like the album gets bogged down by the more pop/swing aspects compared to the jazzier big band stuff which genuinely is fun to hear him sing over and I wish it was more about that. Still Just a Gigolo is an excellent song
Not my bag
1.7 1x too old and not my thing
This genre makes me so depressed idk
This genre reminds me of two things: - Breakfast food adverts - Christmas It’s difficult to be sad while listening tho, so that’s nice
Very Italian. Very 50s.
I'm sure it's a classic but not really my type of music. I quite enjoyed some of the instrumental bits but not the singing - The Lip is particularly bad.
Exactly what I expected - nothing more, nothing less
Not really feeling this. Most of the songs sound the same and the Big Band sound is not my style. I think I heard one of these songs in Home Alone or something one time, and another one which was a cover that I knew. Also sounds like a lot of these songs were originally old songs written by black artists that only got popular later when this white guy covered them. 3/10
i dont like it, the vocals are grating, this isnt made for me NNN
Swing, Evas musik
Great music for Frankie and Benny's. Wouldn't be my choice. Although I did like banana split.
Not really my genre, but enjoyed listening to it. Killer sax, for sure. 3.4
All songs have the same aura as Pennis from the Heaven! I think for me on a daily listening scale it’s a 4/10 but on the scale of enjoyable and fun it’s an 8/10.
Wasnt really my thing
Everytime I listen to something from the 50s I’m struck by how much music changed from the 50s to the 60s
This is #day18 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... it must have been fun to dance to this in mid-50s parties, I guess. Not for me, however. I can't catch up with the tempo. When the tempo does get slower, though, I'm already exhausted by the previous song to be able to listen to the next one. Also, that sax makes me jump every time it pierces through. Is that what Jump Blues is about? This is a 2 out of 5 from me. Looking forward to #day19.
I recognize the talent and the energy, but it's just not for me. Those damn horns can fuck right off.
This was fun, but musically it felt lacking. It's not a form of music that I would naturally be drawn to and, although I came away with a smile, there was nothing here to change my mind.
good just not for me king louie got pipes tho
Nja asså inte dirket min grej, lite roliga låtar ibland Bästa låt: Body and Soul
mindnumbingly boring but listenable so its a 2
Think Louis Armstrong, then think not as good, show offy and irritating. Over scatting. You know what scat also means yeah?
Not bad for an oldies album. I liked this a little better than some other pop albums from this time-frame.
Old school jazz, just not my type of thing.
I’m sure this was cool in the 50’s, but it didn’t age well
This album does not sound bad, however multiple songs use similar melodies so a lot of the songs sound a little samey. A lot of lyrics are repetitive too. The album overall felt long and a little boring near the end.
Had no idea that DLR wasn't the first to combine Gigolo / Nobody. But shouldn't be too surprised as I know he is a huge fan of this sort of stuff. Not for me but it was a bit fun spending 1/2 hour in this world.
If you like jazz, you'll probably like this. I don't like jazz.
Probably banging watching this live but the whole thing is v tedious Best Song: Buona Sera Worst Song: Banana Split for My Baby
50s old school rock and roll and jazz. Wild, weird and dance worthy (for the old folk). Doesn't work much for me other than the fact that the origins of rock music can be traced back to here.
Lattjo musik. Absolut.
Can appreciate the talent, buy I just can't get into this genre...
Rating: 4/10 Nah.
i feel like i'm listening to the 1930s.
Big Night
Stand out track - you rascal you
Yeah, can't get into this at all. So much scatting.
Fun and eccentric, but not something I would return to.
I've heard wilder
Fallout music
I'm sure it's supposed to be good but so not my thing
This was just okay. I like some bits but it was a bit boring at other times.
Funny mood throughout the whole album. Musically not exactly my cup of tea and in addition too aged for my taste.
I am not a gigolo.
Definitely from another time. Jump Jive and Wail was ok.
Well this is fun to listen to, but it's not something that appeals to me for repeated plays!
i mean, whatever
Swinging!! A number of recognizable and fun songs
Way better than Sinatra, but that's not saying much. Wish the album continued in the style of the opening track which was actually pretty decent. Rest just got too slow and 50s for my liking
#139. Boomers will complain about "music these days," and then turn around and unironically listen to Mr. Loodle-doot-skibbidy-beep-bop Man. 2/5: get the fuck outta here
These musicians go off sometimes and it's exciting to hear. They sound like they are really having a great time (especially in the first track). I've listened to a small amount of big band, jazzy blues in the past (mostly through the Fallout video game series), but this album lost my interest halfway through. I still finished it, however my heart wasn't in it as much. There's some fun tracks though.
Too old
Didn't mind listening to this, but my ears are really not attuned to this kind of music it all kind of sounded the same?
From a different era. Enjoyed it some but wouldn’t listen again.
Canciones megaconocidas por anuncios o películas
Not for me
Old upbeat jazz or 'Swing'. Sounds groovy enough, but not my thing.
That’s another 50’s era album listened! Wooo
Typical swing.. Not bad, but not sure I'll ever revisit
Enjoyable songs, but did not click with me.
Another jazz album. Not my cup of tea but certainly great quality music. I like the lyricism and the playfulness.
Corny. Daddy-O.
Yip yip yip yip
It is so interesting when all of a sudden you are launched into music made in the 50's and 60's from more modern music and you hear how minimalistic a lot of the melodies are, in one way, it actually is a great thing as it provides a chance for great singers voices to shine. I love me a classic new orleans jazz album and there are some great points along this album and some very silly points at others; which makes sense given Louis' reputation as an entertainer. This album isn't going to blow your mind or change your music taste, but its just a fun little album worth a one time listen. 2.5
1. Just a gigolo/ ain't got nobody - 2/3 2. Nothings too good - 2 3. The lip - 2 4. Body and soul- 2 5. Oh Marie- 4 6. Basin street blues - 2 7. Jump jive - 2 8. Buona sera - 2 9. Night train - 2 10. I'll be glad- 2 11. Five months - 2 12. Banana split - 2 13. Whistle slop - 2 14. Be mine - 2 2.2 The band is enjoyable but I'm not a huge fan of his vocals. Too much scatting, I don't like skoobadeebop unless it's by the scatman.
Decent enough music but the bizarre and dreadful lyrics took me out of a lot of it. Didn’t enjoy
Funny, energetic recording of Prima's legendary live show. It's loose and irreverent (irrelevant kansankiihotus) uptempo and hilarious.
meh
white jazz. uggh.
Not really my thing. I like the brassy music more than the singing, but neither really hits for me.
Did not get to listen to this. The website was totally tweaking I swear 😮💨
meh not for me
Not bad. Not really my thing. Was pleasantly surprised to recognize a song from Back to the Future so bonus points for that. Still, no.
Swing dance jazz. Would not recommend.
I'm sure this is a great example of whatever, but just not my thing.
Lots of trumpet, made me out of breath
Felt like I was trapped in the semi-ironic 'salad days' montage of a generic mob movie.
It is not a bad album, but its not my type of genre
This is from before they invented interesting music
boring old
I don't know, man. I feel bad giving this such a low score, but everything sounds the exact same, and when it doesn't it's because it was a boring instrumental. I usually like this sort of stuff, but the best song here was outdone by a far superior cover years later, and the rest of the album is rest than that, so... meh.
Första låten är ju en klassiker.
This album was pretty okay, I'm just not a big fan of jazz so it's hard for me to want to listen to it. I did enjoy some songs but I don't think it's an album I would revisit or own at any point.
Background music
Starting to think I should have signed up for 1001 EPs to listen to. Some of these are just an hour of the same song.
(prefacing with I was born almost 50 years after this released) This is certainly an enjoyable album, but it sure is a product of its time. Its not bad per say, just not really something my 20 year old ears really enjoy. This is something I expect to listen to in Fallout, not solo.
Louis Prima’s voice and style did not resonate with me, for whatever reason. This album had a few songs I enjoyed (mostly the instrumentals) but even those were undercut by strange tempo and meter choices. I guess I enjoyed Louis better as King Louie in The Jungle Book ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
2.5 Look Guns N’ Roses, Appetite for Destruction was a good effort, but when it comes to the wildest, you ain’t got shit on Louis Prima over here. Imagine just lamely welcoming people in like some kind of jungle doorman when Louis is out here running the kingdom (as King Louie in The Jungle Book). Both albums also literally contain a song called “Night Train”, though GNR’s is awkwardly shoved into one word. I’ll let you guess which one is better. Alright, enough shitting on GNR. Classic 50s jazz stuff here that would fit perfectly in a Fallout game (I had to double check that it wasn’t already). I recognized the song Jump, Jive, An’ Wail as something my middle school choir teacher used to play, but I think her version was actually the cover done by Brian Setzer of Stray Cats fame. I realize I’m just spitting out anecdotes here, and I think that’s mostly because I don’t have much else to say on this one. It’s fine. I don’t hate this kind of music by any means, but I don’t feel like I’m hearing the best of it here. Honestly, I’d probably just listen to anything off the Fallout soundtracks instead of this again. Not that I disliked, but this is probably as mid as the genre can get for me. Fuck Axl Rose.
cute, but it's not exactly my stuff
I can't get on with this, I know it's supposed to be fun but it's quite irritating in parts and Louis Prima's voice is grating. Best song is Just A Gigolo
Favorite song: The Lip
🧦
Hard to review because I only listened back on Friday. I loved the first two tracks, thought it was pointing toward a promising direction and then The Lip sounded like Mike Filipowicz talk-singing. After that it was really hit or miss, I have a soft spot for standard 50’s pop but this left some to be desired.
Enjoyed the first song! fell off after that
1956. Just A Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody, Bueno Sera
Not a bad album, I'm just very much not a fan of this genre
Not my thing
Good in parts
Enjoyed listening to this and thinking about what people would have been doing and how they would listen when this first came out. Couldn't really get into it musically, but enjoyed playing it through
Not my style. 1/5
The vocal performances here are great, the musicians hold it down and the songwriting is what you'd want from good swing tunes: catchy, jittery and upbeat. If this is your genre then I totally get why this is a classic, but this isn't my genre. It's not bad I just wouldn't opt for this type of pop music (and let's be honest, that's what it is) over other types, and I certainly wouldn't put this on if I'm in the mood for jazz. It's good, but it's not for me.
jazzy
Kinda fun. Kinda.
Very repetitive although very cozy but it's not really my genre.
Meh
Alright as far as swing music is concerned - 2/5
It was just too much
Enjoyable, of its time. Great vocals. Nothing I'd really listen to on the regular
This was a hard listen.
This is weird to rate. On one hand this style hasn’t really aged within pop music and I don’t really see myself coming back to this. However the trumpet is really good and scat singing is always fun and was influential at the time. Never knew who Jump, Jive and Wail was originally by so that was cool. This is somewhere between 2 and 3 and I think I need to lean towards 2 relative to my other reviews
Overly extroverted Rock&Roll/Jazz/Blues/Easy Listening. Expertly played, but SO annoying. 2/5
Meh
Didn’t mind this. Sounds of it’s time, although not exactly Elvis. Probs has a very distinctive voice, and the songs are quite dramatic. Unlikely to play again, though.
Old
Not awful, probably influential, but about as out-of-date as it's possible for a piece of recorded music to sound. Really old and pretty lame. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: Buona Sera Date listened: 11/05/22
Great for 1956 but not feeling it
While I very much respect what this music represented when it was released, it's not necessarily something that I would be able to listen to on an on-going basis.
Not for me, dated
good
Mouais. Ca a pas l'air extrêmement complexe, . 2
I do not care for vocal jazz or swing, so this is simply not to my taste at all (the only things I really liked were the instrumental tracks). I'm sure it's fine if you do like this sort of thing.
Aikansa Tom Jones! Tyyliltään tää oli tällästä pappajazzin swingiosastoo ja sit ihme vegas cabareeta sieltä viihteellisimmästä nurkasta. Mut noh siis kyl mä tykkäsin kuunnella tän läpi. Tää oli kevyt ja ihan piristävä. Ei tää ehkä kauheen suuri taidenautinto oo, enkä jaksa ihan heti uudelleen kuunnella. 2/5
Couple of good songs but generally not my genre of music
I am sure that back 60+ years ago this album was cutting edge and wonderful. Is just not my style. Was fun that I recognized some of the songs, though there were covers from other artists.
Too old but gold 4/10 fallout vibes comes
Who knew King Louis sounded so good
mwah
5/10
Just a Gigolo Buona sera Sympattchique
Fun but probably wouldn't listen again
Felt like watching the first half hour of Goodfellas. Interesting I suppose, but not my cup of tea.
I know a song! Not really my cup of tea but fine
Bored by this kind of music
Wasn't expecting a straight up swing record on the list. Would have begged this as earlier. Several songs I knew, reminding me of my high school days in jazz band.
Not bad music, just not really my thing
I was excited to see a 50s album, then a *little* less excited when I noticed it was jazz, but sure ok, I don't mind some jazz. Then the first song is the original(?) version of what I find to be one of David Lee Roth's most annoying songs/covers. Not Mr. Prima's fault, but a poor start. But then the next couple seem very gimmicky with too much call and response or cheesy dialog. Another half star nominee, I would love to give it a 2.5; let's see which direction that falls in the morning when it's time to assign stars...
This Swing music isn't my thing and it's pretty outdated at this point. But I can appreciate that back in its heyday, this was probably a spectacular album.
Feels like a generic big band album. Not terrible, not outstanding. The Banana Split song is kinda weird...
Fun little album but probably wouldnt listen again
Started promisingly but ultimately disappointing
Some classic songs from older movies. It's ok.
This is actually for Darklands - The Jesus And Mary Chain, but I didn't really like either tbh.
Fun.
Toooooooo old for me
Normally I like jazz but...not so much this one.
Like the production. Sounds great for 1956. Some tracks a bit samey. Wouldn't listen again though.
Not for me
Old school, but not old school cool
Swingy
The lips good. But not my thing ⭐️1/5 But this would of slapped in the 50s
nope
Hey, this is pretty weird! Sinatra...if he had circus ties instead of mob ties. Whiny trumpet lands like a joke. The recording session musta been the most fun anyone ever had in the history of the world, even if it's not always QUITE that fun for the audience. I was crackin' up when he scatted with throat clearing sounds. Whistle solo was inevitable as death.
pls stfu bro
Nope.
Nicht mein Genre.
Discount Louis Armstrong. I’ll take the real thing.
Not only is the music outdated and annoying, but it oozes a kind of "novelty / dad humour" quality that was very prevalent in 50s music and that I absolutely detest. This is the mindset that later generated kitsch / Schlager music: music deliberately produced for uncool, old normies and successfully purged from any transgressive elements the aesthetic form (e. g. Rock'n'Roll) might have had.
Uf...
Not for me.
some decent trumpet. dnf.
Ba ba badooda a ba ba bad album
I would have been happy to have waited until I died for this one.
👎🏻
don’t know why i’m listening to an album from the 50s but here i am. honestly im suprised how fun it is. stopped at basin street blues
This is old school, definitely not my jam. 1.5 stars
1950s comedy album. So... kinda misogynistic, kinda lame. Some tracks are Tom and Jerry coded to hell.
Really not made to be listened to as an album.
1956...
Not the kind of music I like
too old for me
No me gustó. Muy yankee de época
Old timey swing. Not my type of music.
The voice felt a little familiar, the music was ok, there were lots of instrumental songs in there, not my jam though
Almost just.. talking or someone repeating the same *phrase* in the *exact same way* interupted by discordant intrumental solos Newbie saxofone-player's first try at writting a musical
Not for me
Jump jive and wail is an okay song but as a whole this albums really corny
not for me at allll
Couldn't really listen... it's just not for me. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): ⭐ Didn't like it.
I really don’t like 50s music
Jazzhands-tastic mate
I you didn''t know, I hate classic Disney and their musical cartoon films. One film in particular which causes me oceans of bile is The Jungle Book. You can see where this is going. You hoo hoo are a c**t, and I don't want to listen to you hoo hoo. That said, he did seem to be the 2nd happiest man on the planet in the 1950's. But that is not enough to win me over.
Meh!
I don't know. I don't think I'd listen to this again. Quite dated. 1/5
good
just not my thing
Old, not my cup of tea.
I want to hear the saxophonists album instead
Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody Jump, Jive an' Wail
No thanks
Not a great album. 0/10
christmas coca cola music
I was 1 years old when this came out. Glad I missed it. But I bet there are 3 people on earth alive who may recall this.
Not for me
No, I don't like this song because I don't like the beat. I would not recommend it. I don't like this song because it has no sounds
Have you ever wanted to listen to really bad music? Then this album is for you. In my opinion, I hate this album because of the lyrics and what it's about. Another reason why I don't like this is because I don't like how his voice sounds. I would not recommend this album to someone else because I don't like it so I don't think someone else would also like it.
1950s Brain-Rot
Never something I would choose to listen to myself, but it is a fun album and im glad I heard it. My favorite song is lip. I think I like the backup female vocals more than Louis’ maybe thats a crazy take but idc.
Honky tonk looney tunes.
This runs the gamut from mildly annoying to outright irritating
meh. the return of meh.
Didn’t listen
That's the lip and this album is utter shit. Can't believe my grand papa masturbated to this whilst in the trench es fighting the jerrys
I like his hats but his music is beyond reproach
joaa
bad
I just can't with this music
No
White people: - think this is jazz - always making this face Listen to Louis Armstrong instead.
Terrible
Couldn’t wait for this to be over
Didn't listen, not my thing
Not for me
not my thing
DNF. I got the gist. “Jump jive and wail” does make it onto my ongoing playlist.
No downloads.
I'd give this a zero. It's OK for its era but not interesting to me.
every single song on this album is bad, offensively annoying
Not my thing at all i really didnt like it the instrumentals becausw it was weird to me and i couldnt listen to it all. I wouldnt listen to again 1/5
When I first saw that Louis Prima was the artist I thought this is great! he wrote sing sing sing. This album is trite. I’m glad it was only 42 minutes.
Not for me.
No
Awful. A joke. There are many albums in this genre that would be more appropriate to put forward.
Wasn’t a big fan of the live band sound or songs.
No thanks
feels dated. kind of novelty song vibe. some of it is fun, some is a bit much. would probably be fun as hell live. I can't see listening to this album again, but I would definitely put a couple of songs on a playlist.
Nope, tried but can’t listen to this. It gives me the heebie-jeebies
This was not good. Did not like.
just sounds far too quaint for my ears in 2022. lost attention very quickly
Don't like
Not my choice for listening to
Nee, dit is niet mijn ding.
Chances are slim to none with this one...
8/10
Q
Big band jazz.
Not a fan
Great stuff, but this one I've heard dozens of time
