Reviews (page 9 of 14)

This record has some of the biggest Pop-Rock songs ever released. Especially the first half is stacked with classics! Impressive debut record. Music it's not very special, just catchy songs with a solid band. I was more impressed by the story driven lyrics. Key Tracks: Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine, Mr. Brightside, Smile Like You Mean It, Somebody Told Me, All These Things That I've Done, On Top, Change Your Mind, Midnight Show, Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll 7,5 out of 10

Good album

I always thought The Killers was alright. Never really been my favourite and at worst I think they're kinda overrated sometimes (Just can't do Mr. Brightside any more, just too overplayed.) There were a few on the second half of the album that I've not heard before, but I don't think I have any new favourites. Overall though it's a decent early 2000s rock album, and there's plenty of bangers here. Favourite: Somebody Told Me

I remember hearing the two big hits and thinking that this is the most British Band I’d ever heard, then finding out that they’re from Las Vegas, of all places. Anyway, it’s a great debut album. Bright Side and Somebody Told Me is as good as it gets for Radio Rockers. I also like Jenny Was A Friend of Mine and Andy You’re a Star. The LP fades a bit on side 2.

Don’t know if this is nostalgia driving but I will continue to bump this into the future

Solid album.

I actually never heard most of this album before as far as I can remember. I thought it was a pretty solid pop-rock album overall. The hits are all good songs even if Mr. Brightside is completely overplayed today. Some of it is definitely over the top and I think Sam’s Town is a better album (not sure if that’s on here or not) but I liked it. Would do a 3.5 if possible.

catchy dance-pop-indie-rock with a healthy dose of breakup nostalgia and the timeless Mr. Brightside

It's a difficult album to describe because it may be one of those "you had to be there" moments in order to fully "get" it, without trying to sound too pretentious. When "Somebody Told Me" dropped, the Killers were everywhere overnight. I wasn't a crazy big fan, but I do remember enjoying that song. I actually found this record around college, and it clicked, "Oh, this was what all the hype was about." It's not anything mind-blowing, but all of the songs on here are solid songs, and there's plenty of variety to keep one interested: from the sleezy "On Top" to somber cuts including "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine" and the classic bar-closing "Mr. Brightside". Again, it's nothing crazy, but it's just a solid batch of songs, and it was a moment. So in my mind, it deserves to be here. Favorite tracks: "Mr. Brightside", "Smile Like You Mean It", "All These Things I've Done", "Read Your Mind"

as a certified hater of mr. brightside, i was pleasantly surprised by how much i liked this album as a whole. not perfect, but quite good. very cohesive 2000s pop punk, which is about all you can ask for

Classic

Hit after hit. A great album but not one I feel the need to revisit.

Great album

Gaaf album!

I’ve never been the biggest fan of The Killers. The weird kid in school (every school has one) was really into them, and also really into me. That made them a band that I never really looked into. I suppose it’s about time I gave them a chance! Songs I already knew: Mr Brightside, Smile Like You Mean It, Somebody Told Me, All These Things That I’ve Done Favourites: Somebody Told Me, Smile Like You Mean It A few tracks into this album, I was having a really good time and was willing to admit being wrong to dismiss The Killers. Mr Brightside still gets lots of radio play - maybe even more now than when the album was released. To me, this is more power pop than indie rock, but that’s all subjective. The keyboards were more remarkable than an other instrumentation, hence me remarking on them. The second half of the album was much less interesting, and Everything Will Be Alright was quite annoying. Overall, the first half of the album was quite fantastic, and the second half was mostly good with the one rubbish song. I’d recommend listening to the first 6 songs then pretending that the rest don’t exist.

This album aged pretty well. It's definitely not my favorite from the Killers, but all the tracks are catchy and do a good job of transporting me to a different place. I definitely remember all the kids singing Somebody Told Me during recess and that song was stuck in my head for weeks.

7/10. There were the two songs I knew, and everything else was just okay.

First thoughts: Boom 5* Out and out thumper of a record. This is what I expected to find every 3 days. First 5 tracks as good as any album On relistening it’s probably more of a four. The lyrics in many parts seem pretty vacuous. After those 5 tracks the 2nd halve fades off rapidly.

Hot Fuss indeed! There's a lot to like here, even if one is a little sheepish and abashed in admitting to like it. It feels a bit dated, it feels a little ripped off the Strokes and Franz F, it feels a little too glitzy-night-clubby rock for one's taste, but it's infectious and stylish so .... in fact, what it mostly is is "Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll," a title which shows these lads knew their own product.

This album was more interesting than I thought it would be. I was not very enamored of popular music in the early 2000s, so I never listened to a lot of bands like the Killers and the Strokes. While I don't think this is a band I'm going to be returning to often, it's cool to hear how postpunk influenced the generation that grew up listening to it. This all sounds a bit dated now, but it was also certainly different from what came before it 4/5

Great album...many hits

the second best killers album kinda forgot how much it drops off near the end

I don't want to, but I like it. You do too -- don't worry I won't tell.

I knew and enjoyed two of these songs already, but I was pleasantly surprised how much I dug most of the other songs, especially Andy You're a Star. The last four songs are a little weak, though, preventing this from getting a higher rating. It's more of a 3.5, but I'll round up to 4, just cause.

What a ride! I absolutely loved the new wave/post-punk vibe of the opening track (that is the strongest there but can be heard through the other tracks), we are thrown into some intensity right away. This is one of the most British-souding American bands, by the way! The first half is very strong and of course, the hits are not just catchy but extremely infectious - those alone, make the album... I don't know if I would revisit most of the non-singles like I do their hits, but as a whole it captures a very specific time and is sure to be a nostalgic trip for anyone. Though, I have to say I didn't love the lyrics all the time. Rating probably closer to 3.5-3.7

Ah, finally an entire Killers Album. My first! It's really quite good. Lots of fabulous tunes. All Those Things That I've Done, Glamourous Rock and Roll are fab, and then a bunch of stuff on endless repeat on mainstream radio stations. Genuinely good stuff.

Really enjoyed it This would have been my jam if I listened to it when it came out. Favourite song: Somebody told me (and I loved the Mylo mix too) 3.5 stars

What a banger!

Ah it's a corker of an album! I have unending nostalgia and emotional ties with it. From parties with school friends and fun memories, to listening to the album on CD with my brother in those younger years of the sibling golden age. It's such a snapshot of the indie sound of the time and I think the album also involves a lot of skill. Just seeing the album cover makes me feel all the feels. Not a perfect album but hard to judge objectively.

Oh my how do I know what to give this. Obviously an absolute feature of my mid teens and listened to it on repeat. Listening to it cold now I'm not sure I would care that much but perhaps I have to give it higher based on how much it loved it before. Although slightly killed that around that time I heard Desert Island Discs with David Cameron and he picked "All these things that I've done".... Ironic

This one's always good

Definitely one of the best collections of love songs and stories about life. Most of the songs on the album outshine the commercially popular Mr. Brightside.

great album

Great album!

Yeah, The Killers. Never really grabbed me, these guys. Some good tunes but not really sure why I never gravitated towards them more. Still, this album is pretty solid. Stand out tracks: Mr. Brightside, Somebody Told Me, All These Things That I've Done.

Wow, who knew this album is more than just Mr. bright side

ALBUM RATING: 3.5 ALBUM GRADE: B- TRACK RATINGS: 1. Jenny Was a Friend of Mine - 4.0 2. Mr. Brightside - 3.5 3. Smile Like You Mean It - 3.5 4. Somebody Told Me - 4.0 5. Great album! Super energetic, clear lightly crunchy bass tone, retro 80s sound while not sounding dated. Vocals are an unusual but very listenable style. Good hooks. Will listen to more Killers in the future. Nice guitar tones that rock without being overly distorted.

Great album, filled with anthems that are quality live

Reminds me of university - very nostalgic

Good album, nice memories of listening to it when younger.

I haven't listened to this album for a long time. Brings back a lot of memories. Really enjoyed listening to it again.

Good sound

Millennial anthem here. Absolute bangers. Overall though I’ve heard better.

Really solid album front to back, with a run of constant great songs - and then some absolute bangers sprinkled in on top.

Some hits, need to finish the end but a lot of good songs and is very consistent in the killers sond

I liked it. Very similar sound to Fran Ferdinand. Good work out tunes.

A solid collection of pop rock bangers

Loved it. Lots of hits. Great sound

Really enjoyed that although distracted. Some great tracks that were recognisable and some less familiar but all in all a great listen.

Stone cold classic.

Fantastic singles, don't totally care for the whole album

Solid album

Yes, a modern classic (nearly 20 years old!). The best styles of 1980s Duran Duran, Simple Minds, U2, New Order… Rousing and anthemic. Not sure they ever did better than this album.

Such an amazing debut album. Brash, in your face, catchy, a bit retro, some clever lyrics, what's not to like? You have to get at least 7 tracks in before getting to a tune that's not a guaranteed hit. 4 stars.

very good, particularly enjoyed the song I've got soul...

I love this album 4

Familiar album. Some absolute floorfillers her with good associated memories.

First 4-5 songs were bangers but the rest were boring af

Have heard this one before (who hasn't?). Kind of feels like both an album that came out in 2005 AND 2015...

Ratio: 83.30 % Quality album, a few songs that I had not heard before. Good variety, bass and drum combination consistently great. Very unique sound. Would definitely recommend a listen to anybody. Favs: On Top / Brightside / Somebody Told Me / Midnight Show Dislikes: Everything will be alright / Andy, You're A Star

Many bangers

Pretty catchy, emo songs. Strokes esque. Still hits close to 20 years later

J’aime beaucoup cet album.

Was A Friend Of Mine.

The Killers are cool. I always talk about how cool they are, but - honestly - I'm not sure I ever really listened to anything other than what's on the radio. So - I was happy to discover that the album lived up to the expectation I had set. It's kinda punky, kinda indie, and just weird enough to keep me interested. Definitely a unique sound. Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll was a standout track for me.

Supremely polished.

At the time I thought the Killers might have been a flash in the pan. A bit like The Bravery were..... but the band and this album have stood the test of time. I've often wondered whether the people that enthusiastically site "Mr Brightside" as their personal anthem actually know what the song is about...... I presume they don't....

A massive, instantly catchy and enjoyable album. Side 1 is banger after banger. The drop off on side 2 isn't as extreme as I remember. The nonsense lyrics sound as if they should mean something so long as you just go with it and don't think about them ("I've got soul but I'm not a soldier"). Nothing more than entertainment, but very entertaining. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Mr Brightside Date listened: 23/06/22

I have a soft spot for this album, listened to it a lot in college. What it is trying to do it does very well, indie rock anthem bangers. Mr. Brightside is still basically the national anthem in the UK. Still a lot of pretty good tracks on the album, although they are all pretty saccharine. The Killers peaked with this album and went down ever since.

Of course very familiar with this album. I very much enjoy it - would give it 4 stars

Honestly mid other than the 1st track

Solid, upbeat rocker.

The first half is… … …killer.

pretty good for a debut

The chorus on "Somebody Told Me" may be the best chorus of the entire decade. The rest of the song doesn't match how much I love that chorus. This is a good rock album but by the end it all started to sound the same.

First album. Have listened to Mr. Brightside a lot! Delving deep into the thick of it!

The hold that this album has over the UK needs to be studied. I was never that into them, listening again now I can't argue that it kicks off with a lot of very memorable (but maybe not excellent tracks). The second half is real bad, almost lowered the score.

It’s pretty good. Very top heavy but i can see why it’s influential

Celest x Versekeys Ultra-Sense Planet.

I always think very highly of this album, but after listening to it for the first time in a few years I’m not so keen on the second half

Never really been a big fan but there are some decent songs on the album, despite being a little cringey

Álbum bem decente. Me surpreendeu positivamente

2 absolute bangers on this album, and 10 good songs. That doesn’t make a 1000 best albums list for me. That means this band should have at least two spots in a lengthy best songs list. 3 stars

The Killers are alright in my book. Mr. Brightside will be played in bars, stadiums, and cover shows for the rest of our lives and that ain't a bad thing. Couple other big hits on this album are nice to enjoy again after not hearing them in a few years. Many of the popular rock revival acts of our youth have faded into relative-obscurity but the Killers have done a good job hanging on without becoming cringe or the openers for the Jonas Brothers (I'm looking at you, All-American Rejects). Kudos to them

Knew the hits but never listened to the full thing. There's some later Killers stuff that I like, most of it produced by Jonathan Rado, but I think Flowers is a talented frontman. Not really something I'd go out of my way to listen to again but catchy and worth sitting down with.

Honestly it was fine..!! Enjoyed it quite a lot!

Dunno what to think about this. There's definitely some bangers on here, but I'm also sick of hearing them on the radio

Would I listen again: yes It was cool, obviously a couple songs I already knew. Wasn’t obsessed with it though

I liked it enough to buy the album at the time, the singles are still good and have their place as popular karaoke options, but it ms near the bottom in my list of songs to return to

This was an interesting time for the genre as to me The Killers were for sure part of a fairly significant sweeping change where Rock blended with electronic sounds and there were many bands like this with their own take on it.  Personally, I preferred the more mellow of the time Cold Play and the complete opposite side of the spectrum with the Libertines.  I saw the more chaotic Libertines live but can't see that I would ever have chosen to see glam of The Killers.  I think this is where this review is taking me just a long long list of bands that I prefer that not only were of the time but had a reason to exist in this same electro or indie rock band space.  Artic monkeys, bloc party, Stokes, etc etc. I think in conclusion this is just so much part of my noughties experience and one defined by taste rather than quality.  I do like The Killers in that they exist in this space I occupy, but they just didn't hit the big time in my world.    Controversially I have come to dislike Mr. Brightside (played to death beyond its merit).  I think it summarises my ultimate view of them.  Great sound but with an overly polished veneer which makes the whole thing a little too "bright" and has the consequence of making it seem a little too dressed up and perfect, so its soul is degraded a tad.

Tempted to give it a 4 because it plays well and because it represents well that era. I agree with GJS on this album The nicest discovery is Everything will be alright

A very good album to listen to once a year. Any more than that would be overplaying some already overplayed songs. 3.5

First half is great but the latter half is just not memorable.

I didn't realize I knew so many songs by The Killers. This album was ok. A little boring sometimes. I always felt like Brandon Flowers has a little bit of this flatness to his voice that I'm not super into. Maybe it's because he stays on the same note a lot of the time? I'm not sure. I do like Mr. Brightside though, I think that's the highlight of the album. I always thought Somebody Told Me was weird lol.

I saw The Killers live once and had a good time. The ultimate posers I suppose. Most of this album missed but I was down with a couple tracks.

first half is great because of the nostalgia. second to last song started strong, has some Portishead vibes in the instrumental that I enjoyed. but the vocals destroyed that vibe. last song is horrific im sorry

It's actually hard to believe this is their debut studio album, as the album starts off with hit after hit. Having said that, the first five songs start out really strong and then the album really drops off in quality for me personally after that. While I like The Killers and I will always listen to their hits, they've never been a band that I felt like becoming a big fan of or delving deeper into their catalogue. I also don't see the big appeal of Brandon Flowers like some people do. In fact, we saw them live once because several friends told us how good their shows were, and I thought Flowers was just mediocre as a front man and the rest of the band seemed bored. But, I will always crank up "Mr. Brightside" and sing along with it, so just for that the album was worth listening to.

mr brightside and somebody told me were aight, the rest all sounded the same

White boys of the world unite

'Mr. Brightside' is probably in the top 10 best songs of the last 30 years My personal favorite is 'somebody told me' 'glamorous indie rock&roll' is an hilarious way to end an indie rock album Not perfect but a great album altogether, they are quite underrated

I missed the Killers on their rise, really, other than the hits. Don't understand why, I was the right demographic - maybe just in the wrong part of the country/world. This was good! Don't know that I'll go back to it, but good!

Good album. The singles are obvious standouts, but the rest isn’t too shabby either.

Generally I like the Killers, simple catchy rock. This was good, but not great. Really like "Somebody Told Me".

A fun party album with an intimate feel. Late night drunk connection vibes. A lot of tunes for the ages here “Mr brightside” “I’ve got soul but I’m not a soldier”. Those will be around for a while.

Vocals not favorite but fit in very well with rest of music, Mr. Brightside and Somebody Told me will never get old, everything will be alright is kinda weird but I like it, good but not my favorite

Not my favourite except for the classic songs everyone knows

The Killers have written more bangers than I thought. Previously, I'd attributed some of these songs to a nebulous indie band that was just a blur of all the different bands of this era, and I think The Killers are a kind of victim of this era in guitar-led music where there was very little originality. Without a comprehensive review it's really hard to say who is the originator and who are the imitations, but undeniably there are some great songs here. 'Glamourous Indie Rock & Roll' is a really strange closing number though.

Equal parts really good and utter cringe.

It was fine.

I am a notorious Killers hater, or rather, un-enjoyer. The first time I gave them a try many many years ago, it was this album and I didn't think it was that special, with one or two songs as an exception. Sadly, this time around wasn't any different, I was mostly bored. Also Mr. Brightside has been so overplayed that I've grown to actively dislike it, which is a bummer since objectively not a bad tune. I'm so weird about music idk man.

A good album full of overplayed songs. It’s seriously a shame, I would rate this higher in a vacuum

Lots of bangers in here, but sorta gets drowned out by the end. Good album, good time

disappointing

I listened to this when it came out but that was so damn long ago that I barely remember anything that wasn't a hit. Half of it was hits, though, which helps. The bass is the protagonist throughout. Mr. Brightside is still great, Somebody Told Me is still better. Jenny is great. ATTTID is kinda lame. A couple songs are pretty much nothing. The production and the synthpoppiness of it all evoke their native Vegas beautifully; whether that's because you know they're from there or because it's innate is hard to detangle. The writing and especially the delivery come off British even through that. Still think it's funny and valid that they threw out the original album because the Strokes' debut was just that much better. They couldn't reach those heights regardless, but this came as close as they could.

A good album full of overplayed songs. It’s seriously a shame, I would rate this higher in a vacuum

I know and like Mr. Brightside, Somebody Told Me, and All These Things That I've Done already. I don't listen to the radio so didn't get as sick of the singles as some folks seem to have. Solid debut album but some problematic lyrics. Probably won't seek it out as a whole, but I could listen if it's on and I did heart some tracks.

I must say I went into this album knowing only 'Mr. Brightside' (of course!) and 'Somebody Told Me'. I expected similar sound, nonsensical lyrics, and that euphoric feeling of wanting to jump and sing along. The first 2 expectations are surely met but the joy I experience while listening to 'Mr. Brightside' cannot be replicated. Other songs lack that 'it' factor to me and I find them to be just okay. Individual songs are pretty inoffensive to me but once I had to listen to the full album (and I did a few times before writing my review), it became very fatiguing. It's continuously flashy, leaves no space to breath, and doesn't have the emotional payoff of 'Mr. Brightside'. I think this album would benefit from better storytelling and more clever writing... for me it's pretty meaningless for the most part. I assume the lyrics in this project are only means to create a catchy banger and the goal was to write an interesting hook and add nicely sounding gibberish around it but for me it contributes to the fatigue I feel after spending more time with this album - there's really nothing to hold onto when you get tired from numerous iterations of the same song that never match the lead single's appeal.

This album came out mid-June 2004, and in late June 2004 I went on a trip with two friends and one of their little sisters and I put this album on. She said something to the effect of turn this off and also why do I always listen to weird music nobody likes. This is one of history's great airballs and I wonder if she ever reflects on it now that she's a strategist for the DNC. Personally, I haven't listened to it all the way through in probably 20 years, and while all the hits get played plenty on millennial wedding dancefloors, the latter half is rightfully forgotten. Everything tries so hard to be anthemic, and while it hits up front (which is probably a 5) it misses on the back (probably a 2). Ultimately, it's not a superlative album but they made a pop post punk some synth dance thing that highlighted a sound and (save for maybe Interpol, who were not as dancey and fun and are decidedly not played on millennial wedding dancefloors) were probably the apogee of it.

3.5/5 would listen again and has some classic bangers

Although consistently amazing, it pushed out some mainstream good hits that get stuck in your head.

pretty good bass tone and playing, lead vocals are decent, and it's fairly catchy, at least to start. writing doesn't do much interesting and the texture ends up being pretty similar across the set.

Last two songs legit dropped it from a 4 for me .....

werner herzog likes it so i must be missing something big here

Has some great songs from my childhood - major nostalgia

an incredibly top-heavy record. the first batch of songs is just classic banger after classic banger. things really take a nose dive at the halfway point and the back half gets SLEEPY.

Front half is loaded with some of the most iconic pop rock of the 2000s. Back half feels like it borders on self-plagiarism for the first half. I still prefer it to other albums I’ve sat through as of late, but I get why it got pulled from the later editions.

Less great songs than I remember as a kid tbh, but also a few that I quite like that don't seem to be liked by many people's. Overall still a very good debut album and I think probably their best

Higher than some of my other 3s but I just don't feel the magic. Some solid hits/bangers, but a lot of the rest of the album is similar vibe but not exciting filler.

interessting but not that much width in style.

its okay, a few hits on the album, pretty nostalgic. However not something I can see myself playing on repeat, or going back to often for that matter. Works for movie soundtracks!

Well produced - I thought I knew one song, turns out I know 3. Well produced, reasonable hooks on the singles. I might listen again, but am ok if I never hear Mr Brightside again.

its aight, its got mr. brightside

I have to be honest, the only song by the killers I've listened to up until this moment is Mr. Brightside (or at least only one i was aware of). Very nostalgic of a time and place I didn't live in. Not an american, the Killers just didn't make it into my listening go-to music. The album came out in 2004 and i was like, 7 years old in Italy. Spent a lot of time on tumblr form 2010-2018 and the Killers were everywhere there, but yeah, definitely not in my circles. Glad I got to participate, after too long of a time, in the listening of this album. It feels like listening to like, toned down Muse. It's not really my go-to genre and I tend to go elsewhere for early 2000s nostalgia. I'm a basic bitch and I lean towards a good LCD Soundystem re-listen. I don't think I'll ever put this album on after this first entire listen, but it was not too bad in the end. 3 just because it’s my first review, my ratings will settle with time lol

Ξεκίνησε δυνατά και είχε κάποια hits όπως Mr. Brightside και Somebody told me αλλά το υπόλοιπο άλμπουμ έπεσε σε δημιουργηκότητα δυστηχώς Smile Like You Mean It

some classic tracks on this album.

I don’t like this type of music I’m not a fan. But there’s no doubt there’s some huge hits on this album and they know how to write music. It’s very well done very well produced. I’m just not a fan of this type of music.

I've heard a lot of these songs too many times, but it's been awhile since I heard the entire album. I remember liking it more, honestly. The song that I haven't heard forever that stood out again was All These Things That I've Done. 3/5

Never heard a lot of this stuff, Mr. Brightside was really great and had me hopeful for the rest of the album but most of it was just okay at best. That shit they did in All These Things That I’ve Done was unacceptable though and probably deducted a point from my score just for that one song. Favorite Song: Mr. Brightside Least Favorite Song: All These Things That I’ve Done

That was alright. Great songs mixed with fillers but fun to listen to.

Okay but not my kind of music

Like the debut Franz Ferdinand album, this record really defines an era of mainstream success for indie rock. Unfortunately, the ensuing over saturation also meant an inevitable backlash and I'm sure there are a bunch of 1 & 2 star reviews of this record based solely on how annoyed people are to have to hear these songs again. I guess it is pretty wild that, twenty-plus years later, "Mr. Brightside" still shows up on singles charts. This record just won't go away. Does it all hold up? Of course not - if I had this on vinyl I'd probably never play Side 2. But the 2024 Indie boom was one of the major musical stories of the aughts, and you can't discuss it without the first half of this record. Suck it up, nerds!

first half was really good second half not as good still enjoyable listen fuzzy and buzzy :3

listening is easy

It’s pretty mediocre songs but with good moments throughout. I expected more with the reputation it has, but I wasn’t too impressed with it. Just alright.

Really strong start and of course Mr. Brightside is a classic but most of these songs are misses Fav tracks: Jenny Was a Friend of Mine, Mr. Brightside

Alright, that was pretty good.

somebody told me saves this the rest is cheeks

A pretty wild debut record - 23 yr old Brandon Flowers writes 3 massive singles including one (two? three??) of the most identifiable rock songs from the 2000s. Plus 5 grammy noms - today people would be like "industry plant" Pretty heavily front loaded though. Things get pretty dull after All These Things That I Have Done (also my fav track, I remember watching the music video a lot). Maybe it's just a familiarity bias but the other 8 or 9 songs on the record are easily forgotten except for Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll which is actually very sick hahaha. The album (even the good songs) is kind of harsh and fatiguing to listen to all at once.

really haven’t listened to this since being a kid and playing it on my walkman as a kid. it’s actually really good hahah. I can’t bring myself to give it a 4 but this is a strong 3. so many hits on here. insane bass tone to start off the record lmao. big cure vibes on the first track. honestly the bass is so forward in the mix the whole record. looking at a picture of this guy yeah he’s like “my part is sick bring it fwd please” lol okay sorry to be a sith and deal in absolutes but Mr Brightside might be one of the best pop songs of the 21st century so far. top 30. smile like you mean it literally brought me back to limewire days so hard. holy i rinsed the f out of this track. the vocoder part is so sick like what an insane production decision. so much hard pan on this record. it’s cool i guess?? you can pick out all the instruments in the mix so well. not sure if that’s the product of great mixing or if i’d rather everything gel more. is this live off the floor? there’s a refreshing amount of flubs/tempo wavering. it might even be like on purpose in a big way. SEE: glamorous indie rock & roll intro. it’s almost so pronounced that it’s a push-pull idea that is above my pay grade. what a hilarious song btw. favs: mr brightside, believe me natalie, smile like you mean it, all these things

Absolutely a solid indie rock record, and Mr Brightside is enough to make this legendary in the indie rock canon. Some really well written songs. It doesn’t really pique my interest beyond that and nostalgia at this point, but that’s true of most indie rock. A fantastic product of its time, but not something I’ll listen to all the way through again.

i knew it already, not my fav but it’s okay

I can't say that it was bad, because I enjoyed some songs, not all of them but some. It's not groundbreaking but it's pretty catchy and fun overall. Also Mr Brightside is and will forever be a classic. Amazing song.

My rating 3.2 beyond the hits Mr Brightside and Somebody Told me not much stood out. Exceptions were All These Things and maybe Andy your a Star. Rest fine but pretty standard alt pop.

I've got Soul but im not a soldier" is the dumbest line in music history. "I've got mail but im not a mailman" "I've got ham but im not a hamster." that said, the singles are iconic.

Quintessential teenage coming of age movie soundtrack

3.33. Not bad for a debut

beetje monotoon maar wel cool !

pretty good! falls off near the end though

The singles on this albums really are bangers. Rest of the album is decent. Glamorous indie rock & roll was a highlight.

Besides the hits that got played to death in the 2000/2010’s, there’s not much that really stands out, and towards the back half of the album it’s starting to overstay its welcome.

Reminds me of my childhood as this album was absolutely huge in the UK. Easy listening, my favourite track was 'All These Things That I've Done'.

Pretty alright, gotta admit my fav was prob the most popular song on the album, Mr. Brightside. Idk if that's bias because I've heard it before but yeah.

melodramatic mormons must've felt awesome to listen to this on an iPod in 2005

Kinda off putting how half the songs are about getting cucked

Omnipresent

The Killers brand of “cool” just hasn’t aged well. This album was inescapable in the mid-2000s, but the wardrobe, guyliner, and Flowers’ flat delivery don’t hit as hard today. Still love the Anton Corbijn video for “All These Things That I’ve Done,” though. I thought the second half of this album was better than the first.

Overall Rating - 3.42/5 (6.83/10). Very mid-2000s. Good tunes, well done.

Hot Fuss 1. I like the concept of the song-it’s someone who is being interrogated about a murder but I don’t really like it as a song that much. 2. Lowkey a banger. I don’t think I has ever heard the full song but it was pretty good. 3. I feel like with these sorts of song where there is a very heavy emphasis on the vocals the lyrics have to actually be good and these are not. Bu hao 4. I really like the way he sings this. The vocal delivery is pleasing to me. Lowkey these songs are so emo high school though. 5. I like the rhymes and the rhythm slayed. 6. It wasn’t bad it was pretty okay so I liked it. 7. Bu hao I don’t like 8. It started off really strong but it kind of lost me. I liked it though because I think it’s good enough to grow on me 9. I like this song it’s pretty good 10. I think with a lot of these it’s the lyrics that are influencing. I don’t like how he talks about looking up a skirt. Yuck 11. Super duper slay I loved this song actually might be my fav 12. A bit repetitive but not bad but I don’t like it still

I liked it. I'm not big into Rock in general but trying to expand my music taste, and this was mostly a pleasant listen. A bit overloaded in my opinion with some filler tracks. Of course, since this album was very big in the 00s, I knew some of the tracks already. Standout tracks for me were "All These Things That I've Done", "On Top", and "Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll".

2 big bangers The rest was good, I didn’t hate it

Arranca bien, termina medio arroz con pollo

All the best songs by the Killers are here, from the over-played to the underrated.

I like some songs, but not the whole album.

I didn't hear The Killers immediately when this came out — I heard a cover of "Mr. Brightside" first — but once I did discover them, I've enjoyed them. "Mr. Brightside" and "Somebody Told Me" are definitely classics of the era. As catchy as they can be, the lyrics are sometimes cringe. "I've got soul, but I'm not a soldier"?

I enjoyed this but not enough. Probably a 3.5.

Somebody told me, that they had an album, that's more than one single, and this is true. Lots of good, lot of plodding, a fine album.

Standouts Jenny Was a Friend of Mine Somebody Told Me All These Things That I Have Done Andy You're a Star Midnight Show

I started listening to this album by listening to the songs which i had already liked from this album which was a surprising amount. I thought it would just be two, "mr brightside" and "somebody told me", but it was actually a lot. the first one i listened to was "all the things ive done" and i was like I KNOW THIS BUT I DONT KNOW IT and then it came to the "ive got soul but im not a soldier" part and i was like OHHHHHH OKAY. i really like the synth-like thing in "smile like you mean it". okay i know that this album is supposed to be like basic pop rock stuff, but i can't help but be a fan. it is also called white people music sometimes but i am white, so, GUILTY! i do think that i like the version of "somebody told me" by maneskin better than this one. it's more gritty which i think fits the song better. the way "change your mind" starts when you're wearing headphones is JUST IN THE LEFT EAR. i don't really like it when the only sound im hearing is just one of my ears. it's just three seconds that it's like that though, im being dramatic.

I would say for a whole - it's kind of a mid-album... There are more background-sounding songs than standouts for me. The first half of the album is quite good, but then the rest sort of falls flat. I personally think this would have been better as a debut EP than an album. There are some strong starting songs. Nothing I would really be excited to listen to again... I just wasn't pulled in. It would help if all the songs didn't sound pretty much the same. They are all too similar in vibe, timbre and instrumentation. A change in that could have made songs stand out more and seem exciting. Songs that stood out slightly more: Mr. Brightside Somebody Told Me On Top

Felt like a listened to one of the bands that probably inspired TØP in terms of vocals and some sounds, liked Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine, Smile Like You Mean It, All These Things I've Done, Andy, You're A Star, On Top and Everything Will Be Alright

good, but unfortunately i can't see myself listening to this outside of this instance. i'm not in middle school anymore

3.3/5 early 2000 radio rock

A quite generic rock album with some great tunes. I'll be happy when I stumble on it at random but I don't think I'll ever actively search for it. Favorite Songs: Mr. Brightside ; Somebody told me

Loved the music. I couldn't decide whether I liked the vocals. Sometimes his singing annoyed me other times it worked. My 2nd least favorite is Somebody Told Me, mainly because of the vocals. Everything Will Be Alright is my least favorite. The other 10 songs I enjoyed.

Classic early 2000's indie, some real bangers but not my favorite kind of indie. Good production, good sound, fantastic festival music.

My memory of this album is better than the reality of it. It has the big hit songs that are fun, but the rest of the songs don't match up. It feels like they're throwing everything they have at every song, but the results aren't all that great. I was initially leaning with a 4, but it outstayed it's welcome and I'm landing on a 3.

The prototypical early-2000s alternative rock album

The most popular album by the Killers is also the slightest one. Brandon's songwriting really comes into its own later on "Sam's Town", and he has continued to grow to this day, as witnessed in the spectacular "Pressure Machine."

The singles in the first half are all great pop rock songs. Strange that they are all in the first half and the second half drops off for me.

The Killers first album could have been more killer less filler had they settled on a shorter tracklist and moved the running order around a bit. My memory of this album was very warm, given how flawless the many era defining singles are, but the second half is chock full of b-sides. They have a tendency to stretch out and make the most of every idea - which is great when things are working, but when they’re not it gets a bit wearing. Regardless, its a fact that the first four tracks are some of the very best songs to come out of the indie era.

Yep Hot Fuss remains a high 3 for me. The opening 5/6 tracks are electric but sadly only 2 of the final 5/6 tracks land for me (Natalie and Glamorous) - but in many ways this is still a special album for me and is very nostalgic

It was fine. The famous singles are the best.

some nice synths in the early half, but otherwise an ordinary indie rock album that isn't too memorable; of course there's mr brightside and all the things i've done, but everything else kind of blended together.

Very cool and 200s

I thought I would really struggle with this, but I guess they must’ve got progressively worse over the years. I still didn’t exactly “enjoy” it, but it’s very passable alternative pop. Some of it suffers from overexposure but with a more analytical ear listening today the big hits were less irritating than when hearing them with 30 drunk wedding guests singing along at the top of their voices. Side 2 (zero hits?) wasn’t the shitshow that might have been expected. In summary, with a hint of energy and a few rough edges still showing, they get a pass from me. I still don’t want it in my house, but if this is the only Killers album in the book, they will have escaped my wrath.

Nephi UT shit. Anyway it's fine. They have a sound and executed it. Some pretty good songs. Never got the hype on Mr. Brightside, but it's certainly not bad.

mr brightside temon. no me genero demasiado, pero rock punk me gusta

A wildly inconsistent album, but the highs are very good indeed despite being overplayed to death, and form summer playlist staples. You could probably lose most of the back end of Hot Fuss, and "Smile Like You Mean It" and "All These Things I've Done" are just a bit shite innit? But the album does radiate a sense of nostalgia for less complicated, more carefree times. Despite being an American band, The Killers have always had a bit of a British "lad culture" whiff about them to engender appeal over on these shores. It's not ostensibly British, but compatible enough through its "cheekiness" and slightly mopey lyrical expressions. It was all downhill from here though, judging from the limited Killers material that I've been exposed to otherwise.

Pretty decent albiet derivative sounding. Some questionable lyrics?

Besser als in meiner Erinnerung

This is making me think of Muse. Something about the vocals. Favorite cut is Somebody Told Me. I wouldn't put them on my favorites list, but this was pretty good.

it's fine when you do math homework

Great album all songs are very catchy and just feels like something you can dance to while also having its sad points

One of the most front-loaded albums I’ve ever heard. The first half is filled with only hits (I thought I only knew Mr. Brightside but I was wrong), but the last half just doesn’t have that same energy. Still, the hits alone make it a pretty decent album. It’s not something I would return to often, but all songs from side one are good as standalone tracks. That closer, however… not good.

Am Afang no nice gsi. So ab de Helfti isch’s irgendwänn glichtönend und repetitif worde. Hät perse aber kei schlechti tracks gha

Bin kein grosse Fan. Tönt mir alles zu gliich.

Purely feel good 2000s vibe music. I actually didn’t dislike it as much as I thought it would. I guess the more popular songs turned out to be less my favorites as well. Some stuff here is very reminiscent of The Strokes but a bit less interesting. Still extremely listenable and fun songs while also some stuff that’s pretty bland and boring.

soundtrack to my middle school years. second half is a drag though. 3.5

You know, I dig most of these songs.

Some real catchy stuff here, and then the fillers.

Good album. Knew the hits but the album as a whole worked well. Best song was Mr. Brightside

classic album. enjoyed this. not a huge fan of his vocals. didn’t love this. nostalgia def played a big part in the quality of this album because take that away and it’s not too good

They frontloaded the hits (and what hits they are!) leaving the second half mediocre. Flowers has a fantastic voice for rock 'n' roll but for the love of God will someone cuff his hands behind his back so he can't play that cheesy ass synth.

First half is pretty good, second half is completely forgettable. Solid 3 star album

All these things that I've done is still a jam

Very early 2000s rock sound :) An easy listen, simple lyrics, feels a bit nostalgic.

An album with infinite amounts of potentially and a couple of bangers, but let down by fatigue. Despite how much I enjoy many of the songs in isolation, its cumulative sound gets repetitive, giving it less of an identity than other albums I have listened to. If only they harnessed what clearly worked so well, instead, one gets left with a taste of artificialism.

Mr Brightside is basically the millenial Don't Stop Believing and I absolutely fucking hate it. If it was a new song without the cultural baggage of all the worst people at a wedding shouting it at me, would I hate it as much? Probably not, idk, but of all the songs impossible to detach from their social context this is the one. As for the rest of it, there a few others that I've heard so many times they kinda just become background noise, but you know what apart from got soul but i'm not a soldier it mainly holds up - looking back they sorta have more in common with Interpol musically (like a not quite as good Interpol) than a lot of the indie landfill they ended up chucked in with.

From the UK so you can’t escape the big singles from this album even 20 years later. Definition of a top heavy album, first side is full of the hits (a pretty excellent 5 song run to kick off) and then we have a loooooot of filler in the second half

The hits are great, the rest is eh

Super excited for this album, a lot of these songs are absolute bangers ! Such a throwback. Fav song is ‘Somebody Told Me.’

Den her genre er meget lidt For Me, men det er et virkelig definitivt album for hele den her æra og der er sgu nogle bangers på. Stor 3

Holds up!

Frontloaded and the second half is pretty forgettable.

Decent

Hitjes hitjes hitjes 2000 is calling

Before talking about the album, “Glamorous Indie Rock and Roll” is the most cringe inducing this I’ve ever heard omg. Is your angle being the ManOWar of indie rock? Oh yeah the album. This is one of the biggest most successful albums that came out of the whole early oughts post punk revival - Interpol, Franz Ferdinand, The Strokes, all that thing. The Killers really wear their influences on their sleeve - The Cure, Joy Division with more than a dash of Springsteen. Timeless singles and inconsistent album tracks. Overall a product of the time but an important specimen so three stars.

7.5 / 10

The hits are great. “Mr.Brightside” is an all time classic. Other than that this album doesn't really offer much. 5/10

Good first half, mid second

Album 89. Hot Fuss (https://open.spotify.com/album/4piJq7R3gjUOxnYs6lDCTg?si=Fbd1YjF0T824eDiHoVhQpQ) — The Killers (2004) It's not great, but good music. Had two songs in my playlist before. Forgettable indie rock besides the hits. 3/5 —————————————— Liked: — Mr.Brightside — Somebody Told Me

Debut album and I lucky to see them on that first short tour of the UK to promote it. They were brilliant and this album has 6-7 brilliant songs. This is the only album for me. Each album got less alternative or more mainstream for me.

Vegas rock with familiar lyrics

taki średni ale w sumie kilka bangerow

Fine. The hits are good but the rest of the album is very samey. Great 2000s era rock band but not an interesting one.

Mr. Brightside’s 20-odd years of dominance on this side of the Atlantic makes some sense to me now. The whole album is like that. Almost the Cure. Somewhat Modern English. Maybe even the Chameleons. When other American bands of that period - Interpol, say - sounded like Americans who had just learned what post-punk, just like the grunge movement represented ‘The Day Punk Broke,’ The Killers hardly sound American at all. Rather their version of New Wave music has a pop friendly indeterminacy, a transatlantic received pronunciation. When no British act was doing that at the time, at least not without irony, of course that most banal of paradoxes, the mainstream indie night, would take to the singles to heart. And those students would take the song to wedding receptions. And on and on. It’s genuinely admirable. 2.5 The first I heard of The Killers was ‘Somebody Told Me’. This was a song that I took an immediate dislike to in 2004 and I loathe it to this day. As I was wont to do twenty years ago I felt compelled in the course of the next weeks to mention to a number of friends that The Killers were utter shite, taking the opportunity whenever new music was mentioned and sometimes as a charming non sequitur. A little later I heard ‘All These Things I’ve Done’ for the first time. I remember it clearly, I was in Mark’s flat (he lived above a flower shop at the time) and he called my attention to their new song, streaming it on his computer. The track knocked my socks off on first listen as few other songs have ever done. The first guitar line was very simple but strangely elegant. The first verse melody, cleverly derived from the riff but not a copy of it, was absolutely delicious as was the melody of the songs slow, dramatic introduction; yet another variation which was then revisited in the second verse. This was impressive, beguiling stuff. I was gutted. I did walk back my previous dismissal of The Killers with my friends over the course of the next weeks and months, all the same I felt tricked. How dare any band be so wonderful and so terrible at the same time? Over the course of their career, The Killers have more or less sustained this duality. Even their album ‘Wonderful, Wonderful’ is partly Terrible. There has been general improvement, to be fair. Although they haven’t done much better than Hot Fuss at its best, only rarely have they produced work as annoying as Hot Fuss at its worst. And how dreadful that worst. The cold, cutting, idiotic one-finger synth assaults of Smile Like You Mean It and On Top, although the most painful bits are surely the end of Jenny Was… and that post-chorus bit in Mr Brightside. The witless oscillations of the melody of Midnight Show, or the non-melody of the verse of Mr Brightside. The frequently excruciating lyrics (let’s single out Smile Like You Mean It and Believe Me Natalie here). And of course there is Somebody Told Me; which embodies all these faults in its own special low-place. Over ‘dancey’ drums. What could possibly redeem any album that is host to such horrors? Well there are two elements to its redemption for me. First there’s the better stuff on the album. All These Things… I’ve mentioned already, although I generously omitted mention of ‘I got soul but I’m not a soldier’; a rather goofy bridge section which at the time drew more popular attention than it deserved. Several times around 2004/05 I encountered lairy students at kicking-out time using it as a substitute football chant. Brandon Flowers is a gifted writer of melodies, and though he is by no means a good lyricist he yields interesting enough moments, particularly where his faith as a Mormon intrudes on his writing - fragments in which he touches on God, morality, Heaven and so on. Hot Fuss is at its best when the songs are at their most structurally unusual and, unfettered from the chore of lowest common denominator repetition, Flowers lets his gift for melody and his terrific voice fly. ‘Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll’ is a glorious mess. The passage after the second key shift - Flowers belting at the top of his range amid a clutter of backing vocals and ecstatic drum rolls never fails to get my blood racing. ‘Andy, You’re a Star’, the oddest song on the album, may also be the best. Again, Flowers’ vocal provides the highlight, suddenly shifting up an octave in the second pre-chorus and turning an already dramatic number into near-Opera. The first verse of ‘Everything Will Be Alright’ is another of the album’s most beautiful moments - a rich, meandering melody - and although much of the rest of the song is defined by repetition the whole thing has a warm, intoxicated quality, possibly stemming from the fact that the band recorded it at home rather than in a studio. Which brings me to the other reason this album is, for me, ultimately redeemed. Personal sympathy. Brandon Flowers, as was widely noted at the time, sings most of this album in an English accent, despite being born and bred in Nevada, USA. He quickly offered up his enthusiasm for The Cure and The Smiths as some sort of explanation but there was no getting away from the fact that he was deeply embarrassed by his faux-English accent being observed. The Killers second album saw Flowers shift to an (arguably over-egged) American twang. Just as tellingly, he re-recorded Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll in this new accent - with virtually no other musical changes - presumably as a partial corrective to his debut. Now this peculiar embarrassment I can sympathise with. In the early noughties, at the same time young Brandon was jumping about the practice room channeling Morrissey (although not quite the same age - I am a few years younger) I indulged in a fair bit of home recording of my own songs. I am not English either, although I’m not quite 5000 miles away, but I also sang everything with an English accent. Years later I would listen back and blush as much at the accent I put on as the terrible music and lyrics. Even then (it’s been at least 15 years since I clapped ears on a Jamie Aceytlcholine track) I couldn’t quite account for why I sang like that. I could try to claim it was part of the dramatic assumption of a musical alter ego but this was just not so, despite the pseudonym. I think the truth is I simply didn’t notice; or at least implicitly assumed that no one else would notice. It certainly didn’t occur to me at the time that there was any musical value to my own accent. I suppose Thom Yorke and Damon Albarn (above all others) taught me how to sing and theirs was also the sort of music I wanted to make. I was very young and perfectly myopic in my musical creativity. So I feel for Brandon Flowers when I listen to Hot Fuss - an album which I understand he has for many years been unable to listen to. I don’t entirely pity him or anything; whatever his blushes over the accent thing he was blessed with a marvellously strong singing voice which is very much more than Jamie had. There was also all the money and success which must have gone some way to consoling him. A tragic epilogue. I am of an age now where I will pay money to stand in a big muddy field for hours for almost no one. So I didn’t bother going to see The Killers when they played at Boucher a few years ago. Throughout that show, however, I could hear all the basslines clearly as I sat in my flat, which was about three miles away and I recognised most of the songs. Credit to the bassist I suppose, of whose efforts I have yet made no mention. But amid the hits from Hot Fuss and Sam’s Town (a better album) there was, unmistakably, a cover of Teenage Kicks; a move more cringe even than the lyrics of ‘Human’. Wee Jamie was bad but he never sunk that low. 3/5

I expected to enjoy this album a bit more than I did. It has some highlights, but it's overall just ok.

Very listenable, some big hits here.

This album was pretty ubiquitous in the mid-Naughties, which I think has then led to a case of familiarity breeding contempt. I have a few of these songs on various playlists and at times they come on and it’s just ‘nah, heard that too many times’. Having said that, hearing them in isolation does give a slightly different appreciation. You can see how the first 4 songs were all huge hits - singable choruses, catchy (if at times inane) lyrics, slick production. The quality drops off fairly rapidly after that - All These Things That I've Done has the crazily catchy 'I've got soul, but I'm not a soldier' chant at the end (which I swore he ripped off from somewhere, but apparently not). 'Andy, You're A Star' is notable for being the most musically different with just a guitar and Flowers singing, but unfortunately again the lyrics are kinda rubbish and his delivery ruins it. 'On Top' is back to the pop-rock, but without the major hooks, and 'Change My Mind' is similar again. After another couple of filler tracks (prize for the worst lyric from 'Believe Me Natalie' - 'There is an old cliche under your Monet, baby' - like, what?!?!?!), we get to 'Glamourous Indie Rock 'n' Roll', which I can only assume is Flowers attempt at being a hardened cynic. Overall, it's impressive how the first 4 songs have endured over the last 20 years, but as an album, it's not great. 3 stars for the first half, can't say I'd waste my time listening to the rest again.

Hat seine Höhen und Tiefen. Teilweise interessante Ideen aber vieles wirkt sehr einfallslos. At its best, wenn sie tatsächlich etwas probieren, dass nicht nur 0815 pop rock ist. Höhepunkt(e): Everything Will Be Alright, Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll Tiefpunkt(e): Somebody Told Me Rating: 6/10

Die besten Lieder meiner Meinung absteigend sind: All these things that I've done Glamorous Indie Rock & roll Mr. Brightside HM: On Top

The music sounds very familiar and even timeless in the sense that I couldn't say, "This is typical years... music."

Very neutre

Heard Some; 3.5; Really fun singles and first half of the album, but the rest of the album is kinda uninteresting. I didn't like this as much as I thought I would have. Favorite Track: Mr. Brightside

Carried by a few songs

FAVS: All These Things That I've Done, Everything Will Be Alright, Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll Not necessarily what I would reach for, but honestly a great listen.

It was pretty good, but outside of a few songs it almost felt too meta.

A quintessential album for all millennials. Fun, nostalgic for some, but certainly not ever lasting. (Like many albums on this list, or at least what I’m beginning to find….)

A fun listen. I was not familiar with them. I had listened to The Strokes and somehow missed The Killers. To me, they sound very similar. Would listen again, certainly.

I liked this one quite a bit in the beginning but towards the end it kinda fell off. Favorites include Mr. Brightside and Somebody Told Me and Jenny Was a Friend of Mine.

More angular than I remember, some Beatlesesque moments (everything will be alright?), feel like you can hear the desert in some songs to me. 1 or 2 very cut and paste indie pop songs

Definitely an album I avoided listening to because I think Mr.brightside is overplayed. Jenny was a friend of mine is a Killer way to start off an album. Andy you're a star kind of rubs me the wrong way.

Solid album I hadn’t heard in years (but only listened to in entirety probably once). Bunch of popular tunes though….

alcune canzoni mi hanno fatto SCHIFO, altre carine

Before listening to this, I wanted to preface this review with simply not discussing "Mr. Brightside" in any amount of depth. It's almost the 'ultimate' drunk-in-a-club-at-2am song, and has become almost nothing more than that for me. Honestly, "Somebody told me" is a very close second in this regard. It is a shame, because lyrically and musically they are both good songs, I've just listened to them both so much that it's very difficult to be even remotely objective about them. "Jenny was a friend of mine" with its hard hitting bass and Flowers' voice - which I've always thought had an air of 'matter of fact' to it - makes for an impressive opening track, telling the story of a man accused of murder; a fitting track for a band holding a name like this. Under the weight of Mr. Brightside before it, "Smile like you mean it", with it's unique whining guitar and punchy bass has always been a favourite of mine. The chorus too, delivered in a way that sounds like a plea, really sells the emotion in the track. The opening to "All these things that I've done" with its near-biblical pianos, megaphone vocals and slow building drums sound like the beginning of a Pink Floyd record. The biblical tone continues throughout the song, with choir backing vocals on the lyric "I've got soul but I'm not a soldier"; incredibly catchy and personal to Flowers' connection to LDS. Everything ties together exceptionally well here. With "Andy, You're a Star", I find myself saying - for the first time this journey - that I really wasn't a phone. The buzz of the guitar and Flowers' voice just create a mixed drone that I couldn't wait to hear the end of. "On Top" was enjoyable in places, such as the inflections in Flowers' voice when singing the chorus, though it felt a little chaotic with the synthesized bops, tambourines and orchestral strings in different places. Although it all sounds great, it lacks cohesion enough to be truly satisfying to listen to. As the album pulls closer to the end after "On Top", it feels as though it begins to run out of ideas, "Change your mind" being hugely unremarkable, "Believe me Natalie" starting with real uniquity then washing out with predictable sounding verses. "Midnight Show" was a surprise, and I did enjoy its more energetic beat and orchestral outro. "Everything will be alright" starts like a sexy spy thriller title sequence track, and whilst I wasn't entirely keen on Flowers' voice on this one, the instrumental was carrying the track until about the 2 minute mark, where near chip-tune beeps ruined the beauty of it all. I still enjoyed my time with this, but whether I listen to this again in it's entirety is up for debate.

First half of this album is back to back bangers. Not as interested in the second half but 3 stars awarded based on the initial run of songs.
