Reviews (page 11 of 14)
It’s the first time that I feel like an album released during my adult life is dated. Will resurface in 20 years like a masterpiece though
Pretty good
Etwas zu melancholisch, 1
The first 5 songs are of course unbelievably catchy. Have I heard a single song played more at indie clubs and parties over 20 years than Mr Brightside? The second half of the album drops off and something about even the great pop tunes on this album never seemed like it was coming from a particularly interesting place. I didn't follow their later work at all and I think that sameness is one reason for that.
This is why I don't usually enjoy pop-adjacent music. It often isn't bad and actually a pretty fun first listen, but it so quickly becomes bland and uninteresting. Most of the time when I listen to pop music, I can't stop thinking, "This is just engineered to be inoffensive." I'm not trying to diminish The Killers' effort here, but since this is made for a wide audience, the result is a well-produced piece of decent but painfully unremarkable music. And this probably wouldn’t have been a problem if I hadn’t known what remarkable rock sounded like, but I do.
Was cool to hear the big songs cause I knew them from radio or whatever but didn’t know they were from here
274/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
The popular songs are OK but I have listened to them so many times that they become boring.
Solid
The people saying this is a very 7/10 are mostly correct. The first four songs of this album are such classics that the stuff that comes after just feels weak by comparison.... or does it? I think it's kind of unfair to say only because right after those four songs become more the sort of pop rock arena thing that The Killers eventually went towards, yet even then that feels like the minority as they have songs like "Change Your Mind", "Believe Me Natalie" and "Midnight Show" which are as worthwhile as the first four, which makes me think people stopped when they hit the radio singles and not for love of this era of post-punk revival which I love. It's no Interpol but it's pretty damn good.
Good listen. Not the hugest Killers fan but definetely know its impact on the alternative rock scene back then.
I wasn't familiar with most of this album outside of "Mr.Brightside" and one or two others. I do love the synth-popyness of it. "Glamorous Indie Rock and Roll" was a fun one. It's a bummer that Mr. Brightside has become a frat anthem. Probably not gonna be my thing, but I liked listening to it.
There are some strong songs on this album, but it doesn't rise above albums in its peer category (Interpol, Strokes, Wombats, early Foals). I also prefer my post-pop punk to be more rock and less pop. That lands this album between a 6/7 out of 10.
This album came out a year into my undergrad experience at UNLV. I had seen The Killers perform in a tiny practice shed with a friend of the band a few months before the album dropped and we all kinda knew they'd be big. It dropped like a bomb and it was inescapable at the time and eventually got overplayed on the radio, but the record does have some undeniable classics that are still resonating with younger generations today. I tip my cap to this era of rock music and what this album brought to the conversation.
The hits on this album are good. Mr. Brightside is overplayed to death, but it's a good song if you can get past the fact every nightclub in the world plays it towards closing time so the song has become jading to me. Once you get past All These Things That I've Done, you've really listened to all the substance of the album, and oldmates voice really starts growing old. I was fucking shocked learning they are yanks wtf. I always thought they were British. Mediocre album at best. Genuinely can't tell the difference between any of the songs that aren't the big hits. tldr completely inoffensive bland british sounding mormon rock
Okay okay it's grown on me a little its aight 6/10 Fav tracks - Jenny was a friend of mine, smile like you mean it, on top Least fav - Mr brightside, Somebody told me
When I saw this album had Mr Brightside, I was immediately visited by the ghosts of Budd Dwyer and Ronnie McNutt. 'I just can't look, it's killing me' indeed! I think I may just have associated the hits from this album with some of the lowest points in my life and I am unable to divorce my trauma and provide an accurate assessment of the 'highs' of this album. The rest of the album outside of the Mormon black speech of the singles here are good, but much like LDS ideology this album feels like a simulacrum of something else. It's commercial friendly bops that you can put on in a shopping centre or at a hip barber shop where they give you a beer while you get a short back and sides. I don't hate this album, it is technically good and objectively competent and well-performed music but I am unable to critique this without thinking of some of the lowlights of my miserable life playing out to Mr Brightside. Highlights: Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine, Everything Will Be Alright
The front half of the record is stacked. All the songs you already know ("Mr. Brightside", "Somebody Told Me", "All These Things That I Have Done") and a few others that you may not have heard, but are still quite good ("Jenny Was a Friend of Mine", "Smile Like You Mean It"). However, the whole thing grinds to a halt on "Andy, You're a Star". From then on becomes a lot less memorable. They dabble in new wave and post-punk to varying degrees. There is a kind of neat trip-hop experiment ("Everything Will Be Alright"), but it all seems misguided. A solid effort, a hallmark of the 2000's, sure, but essential listening? I dunno.
A good solid pop album and very listenable. Is it genre defining or unique? Not really. Still I am disappointed that I gave it a listen...
There's some good tunes on here but overall it's mid for me.
Rock, better than the next day
Propper post-punk from 2004.
This album was definitely fun and enjoyable, but it had a double edged sword to it. When it first came out, I was completely turned off by it. It took the underground indie garage rock and post punk revival movement that was happening at the time and put it in the spotlight, commercializing and capitalizing on it. It was so sleek and polished that it broke the rules of what made the original movement so unique and appealing. But, as time passed, the songs slowly grew on me, and I eventually ended up with a copy. Before I knew it, the album pulled me in. More and more bands started to follow in their footsteps, and I accepted that the scene was bound to evolve. If it wasn’t The Killers, someone else would have done the same thing.
Big high-school throwback album... wouldn't put it on my regular rotation but I know a lot of words to a lot of the songs, so there's that.
Ah yes the album every drunk British person sings as the bar is closing down.
MR brightside could be decent if it wasn't the most played song of all time I swear. Almost all of these feel like they are being watered down and simplified in order to make them pop hits. There could be so much more experimentation with the synths and keys but theres really nothing too groundbreaking, aside from pop hits. Favorite songs: On top, the last one (not Mr.Brightside) Overall around 6/10
I host karaoke. Have for quite a while at this point. I have to hand it to the killers that they really get crowds engaged when they are in "hit mode". I don't actually think this is a historically great album in terms of composition, narrative, or tone. It is not really fun despite what the disco drums tell me. Guitar, for me, on this album kind of saves it. I've seen a few live videos. That guy is machine precise. Singer is great too. Just theatrical in a way that leaves me cringing as much as I'm enjoying. Not a bad album but maybe too oversaturated with praise. If it was unknown I probably would not be so rough...so 4 stars?
Ok
There were more bangers than just mr bright side!
Had this in the car growing up. We all loved the first six songs. My dad would turn if off after Andy your a star because no one liked the second half of the album. It's definitely the weaker half but not as bad as I remember. Overall the hits still stand up but I've probably heard them enough for one lifetime. Maybe a harsh 3/5 but that's what it's getting.
I never was a fan of The Killers, but a lot of these tracks surprised me with how much I liked them. Side 1 is full of hits, while side 2 isn’t as good. Regardless, I’m still glad I got to hear this one finally.
I have a funny relationship with the Killers, this was massive when I was at uni my second year I think. I was big into HXC and Metal and everywhere you went all you would hear would be the singles off this album and I hated it. However if I sit back now it is decent, however I would be happy not to hear Mr Brightside, Smile Like You Mean It and Somebody Told Me ever again. I liked this album more that I thought I would. Stand Out tracks: - Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine - All the things that I've done - Andy, You're a Star - Believe me Natalie - Glamourous Indie Rock & Roll
Oh boy, it's been awhile since I listened to anything by the Killers. Definitely a band I've outgrown but a lot of their hits still hit for me. "Mr. Brightside" will always be a white people anthem, "Somebody Told Me" is pretty nostalgic to me, and "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine" goes harder than I remember. Unfortunately the rest of the album is just kinda ok. "Smile Like You Mean It" makes me cringe... Overall it's good for what it is but I wouldn't say its one of the best of all time or anything. Favorite track: Jenny Was a Friend of Mine 3.5/5 *rounding down
Meh
Eh- I think it’s over hyped. The lyrics really kill me on the inside.
Pretentious, cloyingly bombastic, heavily overrated but actually, with benefit of some distance, still a solid album despite all that. All These Things is a cracking track. Over-exposure at the time probably got the hackles up more than the actual music. I don't know who thinks this is in any way post punk though (as stated on the wiki). Power pop at a push. Can't really even see it as indie as it was always mega mainstream here in the UK. A bit like U2, both in terms of aesthetic and breadth of appeal but also in the way they front-loaded the hell out of this tracklist. The second half of this record falls off an absolute cliff 😅
- Опа, я случайно одну из лучших песен в истории написал - Mr. Brightside? - Да не, говновоз 6/10
Pretty good album. The popular songs were the best imo the rest was fine
Some absolute bangers on this album. But the rest fell a bit short.
Better than expected. Better than average. A good solid 3 star album.
Mormon rock. The production is good, it’s well mixed. Everyone did a very nice job. But this killer carries a water pistol. For such a ferocious name, this is just Top of the Pops. There’s no teeth, no danger, no fire. It’s very good mid-west pop music. Tame enough for children’s parties.
Solid album but fell off at the end for me.
Yet another band I’m not overly familiar with apart from their big hits ‘Somebody told me’ and ‘Norman Whiteside’ - both decent songs. This is a characteristic of the whole album in the main, good solid tunes and perhaps that’s also one of its weaknesses. While there’s a good standard of material, it never elevates beyond this. A good album but not a classic
Frankly impressed with how loaded this is - a ton of bangers, and just wholly consistent in a way that I don’t think any of their other albums are… very confident! I enjoy this one, probably like a solid 3.5
I'm not embarrassed by this :)
used to like this as a teen but i am def embarrassed by it now!
3 maybe 4
I JUST CANT LOOK ITS KILLING MEEEE jenny was a friend of mine- 5 mr brightside- I JUST CANT LOOK ITS KILLING ME AND TAKING CONTROLLLLL. idk its good but bad. imma give it a 5 all these things ive done- boooo 3 andy youre a star- 5 on top- 4 change your mind- 3 believe me natalie- 4 or 5 midnight show- didnt realize music was playing 5 everything will be alright- i wish i had jambalaya right now. thats how i would know everything will be alright. 4 or 5 theres apparently two songs just missing? oh well i dont really wanna listen to em anyway sorry
I rather like most of The Killers sound, and most of this is pretty good.
Mostly good and brought back some fun memories. But I am not a big fan of repetitive words in songs and this album had a lot of that.
Fun time
A few good ones. 3.5 but holding at 3.
Some good hits I've heard before, like Mr. Brightside and Somebody Told Me. Some good stuff I hadn't heard, like All These Things That I've Done and Andy You're A Star. The latter part of the album starts to drag a bit. Overall a decent album, enjoyable. Best song: Mr. Brightside
Really good early 2000s alt rock with catchy songs
Loved loved loved track one. Has to be this bands best song. Then the hits started rolling, and while the older me appreciates these songs more now for their musical direction, they were still just the boring pop anthems of my twenties
This album was inescapable back when it came out. I probably haven't listened to the whole thing since then. Mr. Brightside is still pretty much played all the time. It's a good song and as many times as I've heard it I don't cringe when it comes on so that's a good thing I guess. Outside of that song, I like Somebody Told Me and Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine. The rest is pretty forgettable, it really fades away toward the end. Not bad, but nothing that would make me want to buy this album to listen to over and over. I get the hate for Brandon Flowers' voice. I heard someone say one time that he sounds like young Jerry Seinfeld trying to be a singer and that sort of ruined the whole band for me because that's pretty much all I hear now. 3/5
Tiene temazos pero en general es muy pop y basicon.
Had been removed from the latest editions of the book.
Good
Britpop strákarnir frá Las Vegas hressir og skemmtilegir. Tveir smellir og restin bara fín. 3,5
3.5 here maybe? Pretty solid debut
Brandon Flowers’ voice was a constant one when I was in elementary school. I grew up with much older siblings and this was a favorite in the house. Listening to it now I feel a bit of nostalgia and wonder how much that impacts these ratings. I believe the album to be something higher than a 3, but not quite a 4. However, if I were listening to it without my memories involved I think it deserves a solid 3 and no more. While the album is enjoyable, I do think it could be redone in a way that would feel more polished. I still believe that All These Things That I’ve Done is the crown jewel of the album. On Top was one I wasn’t too familiar with, but really liked. Everything Will Be Alright started out great and almost sounded like it could a Cure cover song, but as it went on it felt like filler as it droned on.
fav song - Mr brightside
Mr. Brightside // Smile Like You Mean It // Somebody Told Me // All These Things That I’ve Done // Believe Me Natalie // Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll
A lovely debut from a more alternative fixture of the garage band scene in the early 2000s. One of the biggest singles of the new century which is still a great anthem for the time at large.
Meh. Never cared for this and still don’t. I’ll give it a three for Mr. Brightside and some of the music, but much of the lyrics on this mean absolutely nothing at best and are total idiocy at worst (Somebody Told Me).
Honestly, my least favorite song on the album is probably Mr. Brightside, and that's only because it's one of the most popular songs in the world at this point... i didn't know mr brightside also included some of these other songs I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed the song 'everything will be alright' as it actually shows some of their depth versus the singles like smile like you mean it. The singles are just ..... yuck like great for a wedding or ball game or maybe road trip but not listenable outside of that and they really lean it to those a lot. 3.5 for me
Middle-of-the-road 2000s indie pop-rock, right in the intersection between glam and heartfelt. Unfortunately it doesn’t get deep enough into either, and though there are some lovely tunes on here, rockin’ and pretty, on the whole it just doesn’t ever elevate itself in any particular way. A nice listen, but majorly inessential.
Some classics and some drivel. Close to 4
After the first couple of songs on the album, I thought we might have another 5 on our hands. After the next couple songs I thought it might be a 4. By the end, I can only rate it a 3. The first part of the album is fantastic but it gets very forgettable afterwards. When the album ended, my phone auto played “When You Were Young” which is kinda what I was waiting for after the first few songs. It isn’t part of this album though. Overall, I love the Killers’ vibe.
Mr.Brightside, Somebody Told Me, All These Things I've done are awesome.....the rest sounds like some solid Duran Duran, just unremarkable.
meh. 2.81
This is now the third album I've already listened to, and the second I own. And it's hard to rate, because I love the Killers, but I don't think this album is nearly as good as Sam's Town, Battle Born, or even Imploding The Mirage. The next albums are going to have better deep cuts. Some of these, like Midnight Show, feel like scrapped bit of other songs on the album. It's ultimately a fine debut, with one huge hit, that will lead to much better work down the line.
Somebody told me to smile like you mean it, as it was only a kiss, only a kiss. And then some other songs until Glamorous Indie Rock and Roll. Gotta respect the bangers, but the back-to-back anthems are tiring.
Its alright a lot of just okay songs mixed with some pretty great ones
More lukewarm this time around but this is still my favorite album of theirs. Maybe too many Mr. Brightsides have worn me down (3.5/5)
This was an album that came out in my senior year of high school and for a reason I can not understand, I hated the singles on sight (or listen). In retrospect I was completely in the wrong. While I had come around on the singles over time, this is the first time I am listening to the full album and its good!
It's an okay, straight-ahead rock album. Singing is ok, the singles (Mr. Brightside, Somebody Told Me) are catchy enough. Not sure after two listens I'm in love with it. 3/5.
Enjoyed a few of the songs on the album
First two songs in and I thought it was an easy one star, just garbage autotuned rock, but it actually redeemed itself with a few of the songs. On ”All These Things I’ve Done” the same effect isn’t used and it definitely improves the song same goes for “Everything Will Be Alright”. When I listen back I think almost all of the songs are really well written but ruined by the effects, this was however a successful album so I’m betting they doubled down on it
3 not bad but I’m just worn out from hearing the hits over and over again
Average white rock. Overrated for the most part, not terrible though. I give it a three.
First side is incredible, second side is filler. Would've made a great EP. 3.5 stars.
Not bad.
This sounds like what someone who thinks they are an Alpha Male listens to when they feel emotionally vulnerable. I do like a few songs and everything sounds well done. The appeal wanes over time. All Thesr Things That I’ve Done is great but nearly ruined by its overuse in corporate PowerPoints I endured in the twenty Teens.
Some catchy tunes just didn’t feel it
Fine but somewhat underwhelming.
confession time: i think mr brightside is just ok
This was a lot better than I thought it would be. The musicians are good and this pop rock music is unique. Having said all of this, I'm not really into it.
13.12.2009
Decent album with some pretty heavy hitter songs.
Just a three. Good start Maybe a four with a further listen.
Sounds like its time but actually pretty good, couple legendary tracks
Some good tracks but all the tracks are similar. It’s a few tracks too long. Great bass sound though.
Hated it and everyone that liked it when it came out. Not sure if it's in contrast to how terrible popular alternative rock has gotten recently or just musical taste changes but I've come around to slightly enjoying this. Very good instrumentation and obviously catchy.
I like The Killers. 3
Decent album
Pretty good pop/alt. The highlights are awesome, and the lowlights arent too bad.
Hresst og mest megnis ágætis indí.
I didn't think I knew her the Killers were, but several of the songs were familiar. I was prepared not to like it, for intangible reasons I can't really explain, but actually this is a pretty good album. Not sure it is superlative or groundbreaking, but good enough to be on this list, especially judging by some of my recent selections.
Very good album - great singles but I’m still recovering from this band being overplayed to death.
bread and butter rock album, get's on my nerves after one playthrough, but doesn't hurt before.
Killer side one. Should have spaced it out and not crawled up their own arseholes. Music for people I don’t like!
I kind of like Mr Brightside, Somebody Told Me
I’ve gotta say, just OK
Good 00s rock. Mr bright side is a classic and for good reason and I also enjoyed somebody told me. Either a 3 or a 4. I’ll see how generous I’m feeling on monday.
3/5
bowling alley music
Incredibly uncool but you cannot deny the staying power of Mr Brightside.
It was a good album with a few really catchy tunes!
Not bad, per se, but something about it is just off. Everything sounds really compressed, like a brick wall. Weird generic beats. Dream boy vocals.
Just sounds very commercially crafted for me, the vocals are about twice as loud as they need to be.
The album doesn't carry the strength through but there are some great fun songs on here. I was weirdly finding myself enjoying some of the minor drumming choices on songs. It's not that it felt masterful or really inventive or anything, it's just I felt it could've gotten away with being blander and no one would've noticed so hearing some minor unique moments was cool.
Good, nostalgic Christian Rock! I think we should all discount Mr Brightside from our thoughts when rating this album. Such a nausea inducing pile of shite that it doesn’t seem fair to score this album 0.0 just because it’s got one of the worst and most overplayed songs in history on it. That being said, there were a few tracks I had forgotten which I enjoyed. 3.0
Several catchy songs
Liked it more after several listens, though I've never been a fan of The Killers. I would give it 3.5 stars, I reserve four for albums I'm likely to regularly revisit and I don't see coming back to this very often.
Sounds like boy music. not really connecting with it, sound is def of the 00s like idk it's not bad.
High 3. Some smashing tracks here but much of the B side tracks let the album down.
The number of bands or artists defined by their biggest hit is probably hundreds. A one hit wonder type deal. And I guarantee you The Killers probably get grouped in with that category more often than not. Except I don’t really know if they can be considered a one hit wonder. Just by judging off of their Spotify, they have multiple songs with hundreds of millions, and even billions of streams. It’s just that they happened to struck insane gold with Mr. Brightside. Kind of insane that it was their first single ever. Still in the top 100 on the UK Singles Chart, even after 412 weeks, by the way. But past that, and maybe Somebody Told Me, everything else can pretty much be considered a deep cut. Honestly though, this record isn’t horrible. It feels very in line with what the post-punk revival sound was in the 2000s. With some punchy bass lines and flashy electronic elements. The most inconsistent part is really the singer. He just sounds off from song to song. Sometimes good, and other times not so much. Also the weird vocal effects they occasionally throw on top of his recording just drags it down further. There is just something about this album though. A part of me can’t break away from the youth pastor music vibe I get from this. Not trying to claim they are a Mormon band either. Because they technically aren’t. But it sure feels like they are. If Coldplay, Muse, and the church 5 minutes from my house had a baby, it might be this. There are definitely better albums in the genre. But I find some of the ideas they try commendable. Like the more melodic electronic led song Everything Will Be Alright. Otherwise, this album peaks in its first four songs, falters slightly from there on out, and manages to pick itself back up in a few places. Rating: 6/10
overrated
Shame on you, Ricky Dee.
1 full listen. Simple lyrics, poppy rock, energetic vocals/instrumentals. Great for superficial (intense if you're drunk or in an indie film) emotions and thrills. Peaks with the first five tracks, but tracks like Midnight Show are good too. Everything Will Be Alright is great switch of tempo in this context, and probably the note that the album should have ended on.
7/10
When this came out, it was all over indie rock radio, which is wild to think about now. Mr Brightside gets all the attention, but Jenny Was a Friend of Mine has that rad bass riff and Somebody Told Me is weird and dark. The first half is nearly a perfect mid-2000s rock album, the second half gets boring so as an album it's pretty whatever.
It's okay, but just not for me.
Slick, slick, slick. Too slick. This is alternative rock for normies. A little bit rockin' but with lyrics safe for sorority pledges and teenyboppers. It's totally cool to be as poppy as you want. I have nothing against it. But the super poppy "rock," especially alternative rock, does not do it for me. A delicious pile of plain white rice. The music is good as in well-performed and produced. Three stars.
Couple of good tracks
I didn't like this band when I was a teenager, now 20 years later I think it's not such a bad album, maybe I'll get back to it someday. 3,243
This was fine. I had no idea the "I've got soul but I'm not a soldier" song was them.
bang
There are some great moments and Mr Brightside is definitely a great song. But I'm far from crazy about it and won't be listening again any time soon 3/5
Yeah im liking it so far. Honorary britpop. Maybe I just like it bc of the nostalgia but no like aside from the 1st song im having a pretty pleasant experience on top pretty generic unfortunately which is kinda souring the whole vibe of the album... change your mind a bit of an improvement. really hear the noughties vibes here overall maybe 3.75/5 ig
Fun album, lots of hits. 3.5 stars Favourite song: Jenny was a friend of mine
The
Back in the 90s, there was a cluster of bands that in my head were indistinguishable. Blur, Garbage, Oasis... This is not to say their music was indistinct, just that none of it caught my interest enough for me to delve further. The Killers, The Strokes, Arcade Fire...fell into that category for me in the 2000s. Arcade Fire broke from this for me when I listened to a full album based on one or two songs catching my interest. As for this album, still indistinct. Not bad, so I'm not panning the music. Just meh.
Some certified bangers and some sleepers!
Not my thing but the sound is consistent and there are a 1-2 songs that get you nodding your head and tapping your foot
To get wasted to this was a white boys wet dream upon release. Standouts include Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine, Mr. Brightside, Somebody Told Me, Andy You're A Star, and Midnight Show.
This is a great representation of a very specific era in rock music and I still remember it so well. As such, it definitely has a place on the list. There are some total bangers here which to this day rule karaoke nights around the entire world. Still, the rest of the album does feel like a bit of an overpolished filler and the lyrics - if you dig into them - suck real bad. 3/5
This is half of a really good pop record: a 4 for the first half with some hits and a 2 to 3 for the second half that ran out of gas.
I really enjoyed the first half of this album. Lots of singles that I've heard (sometimes a lot) but sounded real good listening with a purpose the first time. But the second half of the album is pretty bad, and drags a lot. Might be a fun album to get on vinyl and only listen to side A.
Iconic sound with a lot of hits I didn’t realize was this group. Fun, party type of vibes throughout with some introspective lyrics on others. Solid record.
Better than the rest of their career. Even with massively overplayed "National anthem of basic fools rushing the dancefloor" Mr Brightside taken account for. This came along and gave an 80s pop shot in the arm to a scene obsessed with bland indie sleaze and boring Top Man 'the' bands (Libertines, Fratellis, Kooks, and so on blah). So, while I should hate it, I remember how refreshing it was at the time to hear something a bit different, and I have tried not to punish it for it's ubiquity in the 20 years since. It's really fun. Not high art, but great pop nonetheless.
Heard it many times before. Good album , some catchy songs, some terrible lyrics
I had higher expectations ....
Like it, not love it. I think I was a little too old, too Gen X, when this album came out to fully appreciate it. All the bangers we know and love - "Mr Brightside", "All These Things I've Done" - interspersed with much forgettable filler. Throw a couple of these songs into a Spotify playlist and enjoy once in a while, but the album as a whole? Not so much.
feels like high school
Actually surprised. It's quite a nice album. Good energy and vocals. Decent songwriting as well. But the want to be the strokes. They are not...
It was fairly good, but great
Meh
Brings me back to when I was a teen. Lots of catchy hits. These guys were on a big wave back then. It’s a good album but I can’t get into it fully. All These Things I’ve Done is a timeless song
a really solid album. catchy songs from front to back. i think people who are around my age (read: millennials) overrate 'mr. brightside' to a frustrating degree - it's a catchy, good song, but not as good as people tend to make it out to be. that being said, i still like it and the album as a whole. solid stuff
This is good quality pop. To me, it has the grit bands like Coldplay are lacking. Perhaps it's the vocals? The sound is globally not that clean; sure there are crystalline arpeggio but also its load of saturated guitars. The first half is pretty high enery, the second half is much more boring though.
The Killers could not have asked for a better Las Vegas-inspired debut. Hot Fuss electrifies with dance-tinged rock anthems and brooding synth-driven tracks. However, I did just listen to The White Album, and everything else kind of pales in comparison to the Beatles (I'm biased towards the Beatles). Three stars.
This album has some gems outside of the singles that I was unaware of, overall some really cool sounds and textures in this album that I previously wrote off. I still can't get over the vocals, they just don't do it for me.
Have never been a oilers fan but I have to admit there are a lot of hits on this album
3.6 A-Side tracks are as strong as it gets for 2000's rock music. The second half of the album are all B-sides and forgettable. All the things that I've done, should have been the album opener
This took me back. I was in the kitchen of the farmhouse I was the housekeeper for listening on their B&O system. I think this album has aged well.
Easy to listen to with some big hits. Would probably give it a 3.5 if it was an option.
Gave it a listen. Not horrible but it's not getting a further listen!
I can see the popularity, and it's not a bad album. I've heard a few of these hits on pop radio, and I was surprised that this album is 20 years old. It's worth a listen.
Better than expected. Strokes meet Interool, meet Gang of Four.
Enjoyable enough. I certainly wouldn't mind listening to it again, and in the right mood I'd actually be happy to.
I enjoyed this way more than expected. My best friend loves this band so I was glad to check this out. Pretty good.
I was 15 when this came out and really into bands. Looking back I’m glad I connected with guitar music. I should’ve liked this album but I never connected with the Killers, it was just too pop and almost up there with Coldplay levels of ‘mainstream’. The singles were omnipresent and so overplayed it is impossible to hear them objectively. I quite liked some of the ones I hadn’t heard before but it was forgettable other than the singles.
It's definitely a time capsule to the early aughts, when it seemed like every rock band wanted to have this sound. The Killers, Jet, She Wants Revenge, Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs, The Strokes, and on and on and on. You don't hear much from any of them anymore, but this is a decent album. 3.5 stars
The first time I've really listened to the Killers. I guess it's fine? I like some songs that are famous bu totherwise... ehhh..
Soft 3 for me. Some albums are greater than the sum of their parts. This album is the opposite. The bangers BANG, everything else gets a bit annoying in the ears. It’s funny how Mr. Brightside isn’t even the best song in this album, it’s All These Things That I’ve Done. Still a karaoke banger though. I wonder how future generations will take to The Killers. Hopefully well. Now the REAL actually good Killers album is Pressure Machine. Earnest portraits of the struggles of inland America without being preachy or ideological
Do like some of their music...
Begint erg sterk, vond t daarna wat minder worden en wat repetitive. De teksten zijn ook vrij saai en cliche imo
Features one of the world's most annoying songs
I actually was just gonna listen to this album considering The Killers have a high possibility of performing at OSL. Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine - Bangs Mr. Brightside - How the actual fuck did I used to hate this song Smile Like You Mean It - No thank you! Somebody Told Me - Good; a little dated but fun. All These Things That I've Done - Holy banger. Despite the really awkward placement of this track on this album (like insanely awkward why does this come after somebody told me), this song is incredible. Andy, You're A Star - What a fucking 180 this is awful! The synths sound fucking terrible with the guitar. This guitar riff is ear-grating. On Top - What the fuck. What is this synth lead? Change Your Mind - Fine. Mid songs and then Everything Will Be Alright. God awful closer. Boring ass lyrics with a sluggish instrumental. This album is like that one drawing of the horse that is super detailed until halfway through where it just turns to shit. Or it's like that one quote, "They had us in the first half not gonna lie." Only because of 5 tracks this gets a 6/10.
También me gustan "Change Your Mind" y "Midnight Show".
Not great.... It definitely gets better as you get deeper into the album. I just find his voice whines a bit....
Pretty good. This was my 1st time listening
Iconic middle school music
Ok but Mr Brightside and Somebody Told Me go hard
Classic album, but listening all the way through again realized how many songs I tune out or just skipped through back in the day. I think the first half is great and then ends up sounding very same-y.
I tried. I really did - but I just don't like it. Even Mr Brightside doesn't do it for me. I accept it must be a good album - everyone says so. But I don't ever need to hear it again.
Bit repetitive but a few amazing classics
Popular songs are nice, rest meh
Not a lot to say.. I've heard a few of these songs and think they are good tunes.
I liked this album quite a bit. This is another one where 3.5 stars would be perfect.
I'm not fussed about listening to this one
The bangers be bangin’ - Mr. Brightside is one of the best songs of the century. All These Things I’ve Done is a sing-along anthem. But the deeper cuts leave a lot to be desired. I’ve never realized how good the bass playing is on some of the tracks.
I think the Killers are fine, but do not find them that special, know many better bands in this type of music
Besides the hits some good surprises
3.5 stars!
Okay album but I do have a question...Why was he wearing her dress?
3.5
Like it!
Lots of good memories from the 2000’s with this one. All These Things That I’ve Done is still a classic. Tons of energy throughout the whole album. However, most of the songs don’t age real well.
Neat pop music. A bit too synth-ey in places for me.
Oversaturated and a more than a bit pompous, but the first 5 tracks are all big, pop rock, wedding floor filling anthems. The rest is pretty crap.
Ok
Meh ...
It's like The Doors for kids.
This is what I thought the future sounded like in 2004
Denk eerder 3.5, echt een chill album. Love 'All These Things That I've Done', 'Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll' en natuurlijk 'Mr. Brightside'. Ook paar meh nummers, dus was daarom niet helemaal verkocht.
A couple of good songs.
College throwback! Fun hearing these songs again fresh after, jesus christ, 20 years. Feels very 90s now that I'm listening with fresh ears. Noticing the audio effects way more than I used to. Much quieter album overall than I remember. Decent, but wouldn't listen to it again for a long time.
Easy tunes, too mainstream for my taste.
I guess although I'm not enamored with this album, I certainly equate many of the songs to an era of my life. A mood of fun times, a sense of freedom I think. Good memories for sure.
Classic
If only they’d released the first five tracks as an EP. It would be the greatest EP of all time.
I don’t mind the killers’ hits from the album, but the other songs on here are unlistenable.
It’s ok. few decent songs. Lyrics and vocals bother me sometimes. Kinda feels like trying too hard. I’d rather listen to the Cure or Depeche Mode.
Being a millennial RULES please don’t look at the economy ahaha
I didn't love it, but it is a good album, I felt that most of the songs were good but they lacked feelings. My favorite song: "Somebody told me". Special mentions: " All these things that I've done", "Andy, you're a star", "Everything will be alright", and "Glamorous indies rock & roll"
3 Good songs, Mr. Brightside being a big one of course.
This is a tough one to rate. I know a lot of people absolutely adore this album. To me it doesn’t quite hit. I like it and have listened to it quite a few times, but nothing sticks hard enough for me to say I love it
Kann außer Mr. Brightside und Somebody told me leider nicht viel, ihre anderen Lieder sind mir da zu langsam und teils weinerlich
Well made pop music with strong production choices. Opening track is especially appealing. Overall not so much my thing though
Classic killers
The album is quite front-loaded I do like some of their songs a lot, a bit of a guilty pleasure. Some of the songs were a bit uninteresting The drums were pretty good for a pop rock album
This one was slightly overhyped. 80% of the songs here are just bland and not that fun to listen to. There still some good songs though. I wouldn’t want to sit through the whole album to get to those songs though.
Ganz gut, aber nicht meine Musik.
It’s got some good songs, it still sounds pretty good but probably tails off a bit too much to be outstanding
Pretty good album. Brendan Flowers is influenced by a lot of artists that I enjoy...Interpol, The Strokes and the same 80s bands that influenced the aforementioned (Joy Division, Echo and the Bunnymen). My favorite song is the album closer which out of left field brings a Portishead feel that borders on rip-off, but that's OK. Overall an enjoyable listen. 3.5 stars
I loved the first 5 songs then skipped 2 and now am here to look for the next one
not bad, but not really for me
OK new rock, not very exciting.
ok finally an album i have at least heard of and it is not an obscure electronica band! Good album- The Killers are not my favorite but it is a solid debut.
It's an okay album, but not really my type of music.
also listened millions of times. would kinda hoping to get albums i ain't already heard millions of times
Many really good approaches, but not refined enough. With every song (except for "Mr. Brightside") I thought, "Wow, this is going to be good," and then even before the halfway point I was kind of bored. Hot Fuss features the absolute Indie-Rock classics "Mr. Brightside" and "Somebody Told Me", and none of the other tracks overstay their welcome enough to become annoying, but for me the album still lacks this special something that would raise it above the average.
Decent power pop
Album has their two biggest hits but everything else on the disk is just okay.
OMG I'm so basic this is so nostalgic, of course I know The Killers but i've never listened to this whole album. Hit after hit after hit, I have no idea what these dudes are talking about the lyrics are a little indecipherable but I am having so much fun. "I've got soul but I'm not a soldier" what does that mean?! Nonetheless, I am singing along. OK I do not enjoy the beep beep boop electronic element of songs like On Top Second half not as good, they really frontloaded all the hits and then included a bunch of fillers at the end "I take my twist with a shout" HAHA these lyrics are so silly
The title sums up the thematic qualities p well. Very reasonable background music. Smile like you mean it:)
Some cool songs, but generally kinda dirivative and boring.
Ah, the Mr. Brightside album. Its a nice enough pop-rock album, nothing to hate really, but apart from a handful of songs, nothing stands out, and even then, they arent too exciting. Its also kinda debatable from the "important albums" stand point. On spotify, first 5 songs have 100s of millions of listens, while the last 6 barely break 40 mil. Thats a well enough indicator that there isnt much going on in the second half of it, it just starts sounding quite samey. Significant 20/53, no Liked 9/53, yeah its alright Added 2/53, no, maybe Ill listen to it again at some point when I remember that Killers exist again.
Poppy and fun
This album really defines the early 2000's alternative rock sound for me
Hot Fuss is the debut album by American rock band the Killers. This new wave / post-punk / alternative rock album was a critical and commercial success at release. 7 million copies have been sold worldwide. This album is certified gold in Argentina, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, & Singapore, and it's certified multi-platinum in Australia, Canada, Denmark, New Zealand, the UK, & the US. The singles bolstering this album are all popular hits, including "Mr. Brightside". This album is one of the best alternative rock / new wave albums of the 2000's decade. It's an extremely popular album and for good reason, since it was produced so well. I loved the various feelings and themes the album has, and thought this was a great listen.
It's...fine I remember this album from when it came out. Like I said...it's fine
nice
I still don't understand the rabid appeal of these guys. Yeah, they had a couple of good songs, but that was it.
Ive listened to this album countless times. I know each song intimately well. It was a ground breaking album.
its the killers
closeted mormon music
This first half of this is an absolute juggernaut, but the second is just middling. All Killers, half fillers.
Don't know what all the hot fuss is about.
I wasn't super excited about this one at first, but pretty soon it was rocking track after rocking track, some familiar, some pleasingly new. It's not all Mr Brightside after all! A good little album.
The singles are great. The album tracks are just alright. Better than the arctic monkeys.
Pretty Solid 3.0
Enjoyable enough, really wasn’t a fan of the Glamorous Indie Rock and Roll track but the rest of the album was a solid listen. It’s one of those where you’ve heard several tracks in the past but you never knew who it was that had done them. I had that happen a few times listening through this.
Well this appears to be a week of surprises. I quite liked this. But in keeping with my usual perverse side, I found Mr Brightside to be the worst track on the album. Not sure if I'd buy it, but it's got to be worth a 3.
I love and hate this album. If this list was “The top Albums you that love the first half of despite the fact that the singer can’t sing a note”, then this would be in the conversation. The first 5 tracks are pure Indie Pop bangers. Songs you sing loudly to when drunk. And then it just collapses into a dreary whiny mess of a record. If anybody tries to defend the vocal ability of Mr Flowers, just play ‘Everything Will Be Alright’ then the prosecution can rest. He gets away with it for the first 5 tracks as the anthems are pumping and everybody is having a good time.
Back in 2004 I thought the Killers were really good, with a bright future ahead, another band seemily a part of the post punk charge, albeit through a glitzy Las Vegas lens. However if I could go back to 2004, without the hindsight of the rest of their back catalogue, i wouldn't feel beholden to give it a low score, due to the rubbish they have managed to throw out since. Anyway, it is a solid enough album with a bit of an edge to it. The opener is one of the best tracks non single tracks on it, then leads into the 4 singles, the strongest being 'Somebody Told Me', at that point I'm hooked. The rest of the album trundles on nicely, but doesn't reach the heights of the first 5 tracks, maybe with the exception of 'Midnight Show' which is a great tune. After all these years since I last gave it a spin, and discounting my bias against Brandon Flowers, I think it's a high 3/ low 4 as it is a good debut.
not really for me too upbeat
The soundtrack of the mid aughts - I had this CD and obviously Mr Brightside is still inescapable. Looking forward to seeing how it holds up. The jams are still the jams, Mr Brightside is a pop smash for a reason. All These Things That I Have Done was the pep band song for the hockey team at my university so the grandness always hits for me. A lot of fun synth jams but overall there are hits and misses. I'll relisten but this didn't knock my socks off today.
★: "Jenny was a friend of mine", "Mr. Brightside", "Somebody Told Me", "All these things that I've done"
Boring, but fine
Ok for mostly bland pop-rock. Mr Brightside has been overplayed over the years so kind of fed up hearing it.
Pretty cool but I'm not buyin' the t shirt
Brightside and Somebody Told Me are so good. A number of good supporting songs here too. Unfortunately peppered with some real duds, especially to end the album.
- mr. brightside & somebody told me -> banger 5/5 - rest -> okay-ish 1-2 / 5 - 3/5 as a whole
Basic
I've heard of them and listened to the occasional song before, but not an entire album.
I see why Mr. Brightside was the most popular song from this album
3.5: +Mr. Brightside +All these things I’ve done +Change Your Mind
Vocals are not for me, much sounds the same. If you like this style, you will enjoy this album.
outrageously mid. Mr brightside and somebody told me are good but so overplayed it ruins the experience. Plus the lead vocalist is whiny and tiring to listen to after 20 minutes. Mid mid mid mid
Ok
It's fine. I feel like there was a lot of competent, apolitical rock and roll being made around this time that didn't advance the form in any meaningful way. As a result, the genre calcified and hasn't really evolved since then.
Some classic hits here but also some meh.
Takes me back to gym class in 9th grade where I listened to this album on my friends zune. Yeah that’s the brick mp3 player … anyways most of the songs didn’t really age well. But who can deny the impact “all the things that I have done” had on teenage brains back then? Unfortunately we can probably blame the killers for bands like imagine dragons existing today and that crime is just unforgivable
Actually really good. lived it more than I expected. Mr brighside is obviously amazing but there were other really good ones as well
All the good songs were already well played and certified hits. The album as a whole was a bit of a disappointment
I knew more songs than I thought I did off this album. I legit listen too Smile Like You Mean It all the time, I think it's a banger. If Mr. Brightside wasn't so overplayed it would also be a standout song but I'd be perfectly happy if I never heard it again. Also "I got soul but I'm not a soldier" has always been corny to me. Overall though I do have a soft spot for early 00s post-punk inspired music.
Some great songs, good rock and roll. Some not so memorable.
The instrumentation is awesome, but the lyrics are fairly cringe for most of it. Best track: Everything Will Be Alright
The Killers exploded onto everyone's radar a mere two years after forming, with the song Mr. Brightside being an instant radio hit. They had successfully modernized the sound of 80's post-punk/new wave songwriting, giving it cool new coat of paint. They understood that rock's sound for the new millennium was basically The Strokes, but they could fine-tune it to make the sound their own. A strong demo led to a couple of record deals and the eventual recording of Hot Fuss. Many of the tracks here are actually from the demo, which is a testament of the demo's quality. As for the album itself, I have mixed feelings. The first six songs fantastic feats of early 2000's rock, planting the Killers' flag boldly in the music landscape. After the sixth track Andy You're A Star, it begins to sadly fall off. Hot Fuss is a definitive front-loaded album. No need to flip over to side B, or you'd be wasting your time!
I remember liking several of these songs when they came out but they've been overplayed at this point. Not a very exciting album.
Why do people love Mr. Brightside? It was an alright song before I heard it 100 times and now I actively skip it. Rest of the album is good, particularly enjoyed Everything Will Be Alright.
A couple of great songs, a couple of not very good songs.
Unusual for a band to have so many hits on their first album. Catchy and fun and full of nostalgia for me.
Heard it too many times
gosh, this album's release in 2004 doesn't seem right! the killers created such modern rock but also something that wouldn't be out of place released in 1982 or 2023. as someone who enjoys the killers a regular amount and doesn't seek them out, i found the second half of the album to be refreshing. the killers made such a smash with the first album, but telling a fellow millennial that the killers have better music than "mr. brightside" might get me beat up. the second half was completely new to me and maybe didn't have the same energy as the first side, which has so much punch, but i didn't mind because more of the killers' talent was revealed on side b. since i don't seek out the killers' music (as mentioned before), i didn't notice their punk or new wave aspects before, but i was struck how well they combine several genres. color me impressed!
Mr brightside Somebody told me All these things that ive done 1st half great second half meh. 3.5 Scratch that. 3
Went in not thinking I’d really like this album. Definitely not my type but I always forget how many good tunes this piece has. Bright side and somebody told me are always instant classics, but there are some hidden (to me) gems in here. Early 2000s grunge just hits a little different when you’re a struggling college student. Got some uplifting songs and some songs I’ll play when I’m in my feels. Favorites: All the things I’ve done On top Glamorous rock and roll
Classic, not my style tho
probably great for its time, especially if a lad. 2.5
Some definite bangers, would not listen to the whole album again of my own volition
This had some decent songs on it
Some of these songs are in a regular playlist of mine. It was decent, but the known hits were definitely the best parts of it. 3.5/5
They have great hooks, but that's pretty much it. I don't understand why "Mr. Brightside" was such a big hit. Plus, the lyrics are just weird at points, not something I expect from a US band.
I didn't think it was a bad album, but just not my thing. Still give it a 3 because I think it sounds good
