Reviews (page 10 of 14)

Some bright spots but none of them are strung together into a full song. The back half of the album is particularly weak, except for ‘Midnight Show.’ (3/5)

Like the lyrics and tempo of songs. Favorite song Mr Brightside.

It was nice to hear some of the album songs that are not overplayed to death again. This is a fun album, but still feels of the moment rather than classic to me.

6/10 wasn’t a fan but definitely had its good songs in there! My favorite track is Everything will be alright’

Liked the songs…not sure about the singer

The songs are OK and I'm familiar with the first five. But they're ruined by the sound recording IMO. It lacks clarity anf space between the instruments and there's a harshness anf density to the sound that makes it hard to listen to.

Solid Rock album. It's got the two songs I know and like from The Killers (Mr. Brightside & Somebody Told Me) but otherwise nothing too special. I'd give it 3.5 Stars if I could but 3 seems reasonable

Mr brightside, always will bring me back to Maastricht and karaoke night :) but overall not my style.

Nostalgic album for me. Loved it when it came out. Listened again. It's okay.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ meh

such a nostalgic feeling type of album

Até On Top, é fácil um dos melhores de todo o gênero e época. Infelizmente ainda tem mais 5 faixas depois disso.

Hard to deny the hooks on the first half of this record.

Honestly only liked the songs I already knew so this was kind of a disappointment

Better than Coldplay

Fine, some good classic tracks & ultimately better than I expected. Quite repetitive though -- they definitely had a signature sound on this one. Everything Will Be Alright is a cool one I hadn't heard but otherwise it's what you expect it to be. And that's okay.

The album was an amazing listening experience, liked a few songs. Would listen to again.

60/100

Buen álbum. No es mi estilo. Nunca me llegó la banda. Pero qué hits tiene este. 6/10

There's some catchy tunes on this album.

Bom início, perde interesse a meio. Não gostei dos sintetizadores

yeah, quite like it

Abgesehen von Mr Brightside hat mich das Album nicht so richtig abgeholt

Good record. I knew a few tracks here, but I was pleasantly surprised by the B-side here. Favourite Track(s): Mr. Brightside Least Favourite Track(s): Believe Me Natalie

Two mega hits aber der Rest ist zu dünn für 4 Also 3,5 Sterne diesesmal aber mit der Tendenz zu drei

I’ll never get beyond the lyric “I’ve got soul but I’m not a soldier”

A nice reminder that “Mr. Brightside” only recently became annoying. I like “Believe Me Natalie”.

Not as nostalgic as I had hoped. Although will always think “all these things that I’ve done” is their best song

mr brightside top song. All these things i've done 2nd fav. back when are we human was on the radio i did not know this was their sound

Mr. Brightside is about as big a single as you can get. It accomplished the rare feat of being wildly popular and profitable, while never getting too stale. Safe to say that for the millennial cohort, there may not be a song more universally enjoyed. As for the rest of the album, there’s some good tracks here. Side two is pretty pedestrian, but Jenny is a great opener, and All These Things serves as a great emotional peak.

Really fun listen. I wasn’t expecting to like the songwriting as much as I did. Feels pretty top heavy. It sounds a bit derivative to me, nothing groundbreaking. Still good!

Achei meio meh

Love the lead vocals from The Killers. ‘Mr. Brightside’ is one of my favorite songs of all time and to hear the album it came from was pretty neat. ‘Somebody Told Me’ of course another classic.

Some banger singles for sure including the most overplayed song of the century. Always really liked Smile Like You Mean It. 3.5 rounded down Heard before? Yes Owned: No: 35/136 (25%) Will I get? No.

I only really like Mr. brightside. I definitely see how this was an important album for the time though

Not a bad album, less Christian than the rest of their stuff. I was previously an enjoyer of Somebody Told me and All These Things That I've Done, but Jenny was a Friend Of Mine was a new one which I enjoyed. I think the progression of this album was really good and I enjoyed that flow. 2.5/5 stars.

It's a little white bread to me but good sing along songs.

People weren't kidding when they said this was a very front loaded album. All the hits are in the first few songs and after Somebody Told Me this really drops off. Still a pretty decent listen. Not spectacular and I don't really care for Mr. Brightside, but it's a fun enough album. Loud blaring stadium rock, probably really fun in a live setting.

If this were like, a 6 song EP, it'd be one of the strongest EP's of the last 30 years. Unfortunately, it's not, so it's just a pretty average, albeit notable, album.

Overall enjoyable, with some catchy tracks, but also a lot of filler and moments where you feel they are forcing themselves into a particular sound.

I despise Mr Brightside but the rest of the album was good

Love an album that screams what decade it is from, that is in this case from the 2000s, which similar sounding music to this album called garage rock/post punk revival is from. When people decided to give a back-to-basics approach another chance. It's pretty alright, but It gives me an urge to just listen to Is This It? instead. A re-listen to this one probably maybe will help. Highlight Song/s: Mr. Brightside and All These Things That I've Done

The hype around that one song is unfounded. Not even top 3 on this album. That being said, this is just fine.

Never been the biggest fan of The Killers - I think Mr Brightside is best as a group Guitar Hero song and ain't what they chop it up to be otherwise. There's more versatility here than I anticipated and that was cool -esp for a debut. Favorite Song: Everything Will Be Alright

21 years ago i heard somebody told me and loved it. i bought the album and hated it. all the singles ive heard since then have been fine but not great. re-listening, its much better than i remember it being and has a decent bit of variety. its also very heavily frontloaded with a very mediocre string of songs to end the album

First half of the album is excellent but extremely front loaded.

No my cup of tea

Highly efficient corporate pap.

This album is OK. There are a few songs I really love…most of the rest of the album is forgettable.

Gotta start somewhere

Poppista mutta muistan kyllä hitit. Ihan jees! 3/5

Alkupuoli lapsuusajan hittejä, loppupuoli geneeristä nollari-indietä. kakkosen ja kolmosen välillä kiikutaan.

Full of their hits and I remember loving it at the time. Doesn’t quite hit the same heights listening back today but still an enjoyable album.

3.0 - Ok

Although it’s not a deep pool, it’s still fun to take a dip on a warm summer day. A light 3/5

Dated and not as great as I wanted it to be. Not really a huge fan in their hey, I wanted to think maybe it was better 20-years on.

Nostalgic and fun. Probably wouldn't listen to the album all the way through on the regular but it was a fun throw back.

Not really the era of rock I enjoy, but this album was solid enough. I recognized a couple songs. I felt like the first half of this album was more fun to listen to than the second half though.

I almost skipped this one because I listened to it so many times when it first came out, in my 3rd year of uni. I’m glad I listened to it though, it brought back a lot of memories. Somebody Told Me still reminds of going to drop Trace off at school. The only song I didn’t recognise was Change Your Mind which I find strange because I know I listened to the whole album many times, because that’s how I listened to music back then.

Klassista kamaa tämäkin. Nuorempana tuli kuunneltua jonkin verran ja edelleen mukavaa kuunneltavaa.

Me childhood lol

"It's indie rock'n'roll for me" about sums it up. So many bangers on this record, but also a fair amount of filler. We will never escape "Mr. Brightside."

Somebody told me that you have a boyfriend that looks like a girlfriend.... kyllä sinä tiedät tämän biisin. Hyvin tuotettu albumi

I think Brandon Flowers' voice was wasted on this album, he showed his range much better later and solo.

Solid album, I remember seeing the Killers on this album tour

First half is INCREDIBLE. You could be a successful touring band just based on these songs for the rest of your music career, and they have. Second half is much like the rest of The Killers discography...meh.

Close to 4 stars on account of some truly iconic tracks, but second half is a bit of a snoozefest and unremarkable. Found a similar pattern on Sam’s Town too - feels like they wrote three massive hits, and had to put an album around them. Some of the bass parts are wicked and had never noticed before. Surely one of the best things that the Mormons have ever made.

Some songs I really like, some I actively don't care for or have heard too many times to even hear as songs. I like the "I got soul but I'm not a soldier" one.

The highest of highs and the lowest of lows.

JEALOUSY

Pretty neat tbh ! The bangers are bangers the songs that aren’t popular aren’t popular for a reason. Still pretty solid. Very little of this feels exciting, probably because I was raised by the internet and saw all warrior cats animatics with these songs…

6.8/10

Already familiar with album. Starts off real strong with catchy songs, better than I remembered even. Halfway through I got bored and found things forgettable, thus reminding me why I was unimpressed with the album past the singles that came from it when it first came out.

It was a pleasant listen, a good album for a spectrum of ages I’d say. Wasn’t as genre defining as some of the albums I’ve listened to

Correcto, pero ya me pilla mayor y no lo he disfrutado en su época.

Creo que podría haber sido mejor, de igual forma es una calificación temprana, necesitaba de más escuchas

Generally I'm more of a Strokes or Interpol guy, but the three song run of "Mr. Brightside" "Smile Like You Mean It" and "Somebody Told Me" is pretty unimpeachable. That being said, the rest of the album is solidly okay for me.

new wave post punk killers shmillers... Feels like this is like 25th similar album during this 1001 -project. Not bad, but really not so good either.

Think rating of this depends on how fresh and new it felt on first listen.I remember feeling it wasn't exactly original, very much wearing it’s predecessors front and centre, but a lot of airplay later it sits alongside said predecessors on classic rock radio today. Thought it was listenable anthemic rock in the 2000s, guess it is still that, listenable though it definitely front loaded and drops off becoming laboured towards the end, 3 Star

I found 1 great song

So obviously I know this album, I know several songs on this album. But until yesterday I don’t know for a fact that I had ever sat through the whole thing. And I know now why I don’t remember most of it, the second half of the album is completely forgettable. You could argue that the A side is so strong that it makes the mediocre B side look worse. And I think that’s pretty agreeable. The second half isn’t bad it just isn’t memorable at all. But those first 4 songs are untouchably good. To be fair, the first half of this album is so good that it contains most of the biggest rock songs of the 2010s. Easily a great album that’s only slightly weighted down by the second half but not enough to turn it off.

Somehow I never realized that the Killers were post-punk revival? Anyway, common wisdom on this one is right, it drops off *hard* after "All These Things I've Done" (a song I can't think of without thinking of the time I found myself in Notasulga and couldn't stop being like "We've got soul, we're Notasulga")

Fun. Not a huge Killers fan. Nothing groundbreaking or really grasping to me on this album

Feels over produced but good tracks

Yep, it's the Killers best album A couple of songs I quite like on here, the rest aren't awful background music.

I got an album by the Smiths 2 days ago and I think I prefer that to this, but some classics on here.

This album is like nerdy music kids rocking up to the 6th form school ball as if they own the place. They never really socialised with anyone else other than each other, and you always thought that even though they are good guys, they weren’t exactly fun to hang out with on weekends. But here they are, rocking the cleanest suit and tie combos in the room, knowing they look good and commanding the respect of others because of it. One of them is wearing sunglasses inside which is insane levels of skux that you simply didn’t think they had. You’ve never seen them exude such confidence, and you can’t help but admire them. You catch up with one of them at the after-ball and remember they are still the same old nerdy nice guys though. The drinks on offer are beer and white wine, and this dude just ordered a dirty martini.

Meh. Some good moments, but mostly easily forgettable.

Not my thing but for the genre I thought it was good.

Two bangers, a bunch of pretty ok songs, and a few songs I didn’t like. Doubting between 3 or 4 stars, but don’t think I’ll play the whole album again. So 3.

clasic

This is one of those mid-oughts records that I missed mostly because I had given up on rock for a long time after the late 90s junk that dominated the radio. I've definitely heard a few of these songs, and the whole album comes together pretty well. definitely a sound of that era, which I mostly didn't love. I'm giving this a three, but it's a high three. 3/5

På sitt beste er denne plata en riktig så god postpunk/new wave-pastisj. På sitt verste er den full av fillers. Hitsa fra plata er helt konge, og egentlig alt man trenger. Men takk for nostalgitrippen

This came out during my high school years. Everyone around me was obsessed but I didn’t get it back then. After a few listens, I can see it. I enjoy the vocal styling, especially on “Everything Will be Alright”. This feels like an emo security blanket. Hopeful melancholy.

This album teleports you 20 years into the past. Very of the time. Last few songs are very skippable, but a fun listen because of nostalgia.

Big throwback to the Pandora days. Pretty varied album actually. The highs are really high. The filler on the back half of the album I definitely could have died without having listened to.

Honestly a bit disappointed in this one, thought I’d like it more. Love the hits but most of the other tracks are passable, that’s it.

not bad

nice stuff - just not my cup of tea

I know most of the songs on this album but I've never fully listened to it before (3). The hits are massive, the rest is not bad!

Can't believe this is so old

Moro moro :D The killers on sellanen bändi jolta lisätään yks tai kaks biisiä soittolistaan täytteeksi. Kädenläpöistä rokkia milleniaaleille. Musiikki on kuitenki ihan hyvää.

Kyl tälle on oma aikansa ja paikkansa. Moni biiseistä kulunut radiosoitossa paljon, mutta kuvastaa hyvin 2000 luvun alun meininkejä.

Ihan hyvää perus poprockkia Killerssiltä. Ei huonoa, muttei erityisen hyvääkään. Pari tunnettua hittiä jo aiemmin kuullut, mutta muuten levy aiemmin tuntematon.

Tykkään todella paljon The Killersin biiseistä, mutta kokonainen albumi kerralla alkaa tuntumaan liian raskaalta. Jotenki laulu liian leukoja länkyttävää huutamista liian monessa kappaleessa. Helppo kolmonen silti, koska yksittäil sillon tällön ripoteltuna nautin.

Hittibiisit ovat menevää tavaraa, mutta osa biiseistä on vähän sellaista "meh" -kamaa.

Have found the Killers to be one of the most overrated bands of the past 20+ years. This one didn't hit for me when it came out (despite owning it) but I felt it was slightly better on this much later listen. Not sure if it is quite a "classic" but solid none-the-less. 3/5

mid diría yo con algunos toques buenos, na me gusta

Mr Brightside! This is kinda closer to my type of music, but still a lot of skips for me.

I think this would be sick live

Listening to the second half of this album is like walking through mud.

I suspect people who are not yet dead inside would rate this higher. (I think It is who and not whom, but I’m not sure. There would be no way for me to figure this out. I SAID THERE ISN'T ANY WAY!!!)

Eventually I got round to listening to this album. It is okay but in no way memorable.

Haha Mormon album

Best Song: All These Things That I've Done. I've always liked the "I've got soul, but I'm not a soldier" repetition, cheesy as it may be. Worst Song: Everything Will Be Alright. I bet this seemed like a better idea on paper than it turned out to be in practice. The excessive repetition with different intonations comes off as more inane than inspirational. Overall: Certainly there are some songs on here that were so massively played as to be unavoidable, which makes it difficult to listen with anything approaching new ears. Nevertheless, the big songs have a pleasant sing-along quality, and the B-sides are good enough to not annoy. Pretty good pop-rock, overall.

I liked it a lot, quite a few hits I recognized, may come back and listen again

“Mr. Brightside” has been consistently on the charts for over 20 years. That is incredible! However, outside of the 3 big ones on this record, I thought it lacked. “All These Things that I’ve Done” is still one of my favorite 00s rock songs. The non-single tracks are just kinda there. Would listen again, but got the gist. This is another instance where I would recommend a different album (Sam’s Town).

I really didn’t like the Killers until “Sam’s Town” came out, but once I caught on and bought this album I knew I had been wrong to dismiss them. They are an incredible and original pop rock act, with (mostly) good songwriting to boot (not to mention Brandon Flowers grew up Mormon and never uses swear words in his writing). This album is hit after hit… but completely front loaded. Once you get past song 6 or 7 it slips into filler territory. But the first half is perfect. “Sam’s Town” on the other hand, only has one bad song. Anyway, in conclusion, “All The Things That I’ve Done” is the best song on here, hands down.

Expected to dislike this! it was alright!

I just never could get into this band. First half is pretty good.

Not sure if it's the voice distortion or the general mood, but I've never been able to tolerate the band. But I have to admit that they have some hits, and overall is an OK album. 6/10

never listened to a full killers album before and it's incredibly cheesy teenager stuff that didn't age well. three stars instead of two only because of somebody told me, it's a fun song

obviously bright side is overrated but overall i didn’t mind the album, cliched for the time period but also had a sense of nostalgia and familiarity that i liked

absolutely fucking loved this album when I was 13. It's still decent in some places even if Mr Brightside has been stolen by white people for a wedding anthem.

Good classic album, Mr Brightside is the quintessential white people party song. Sad they could never duplicate it

This is so 2018 Austin

I don't like Killers. Generic forgettable.

It was merely okay

Z plusem

divertido

Brings me back to the good ol' days... My third year of life

I know they are let's say heavily borrowing from 80s post-punk and new wave, and I know that the music-cognoscenti like to diss them for being all flash and no bang, but I have never listened to the Killers before, aside from hearing that single "Mr. Brightside" a bunch, and there are some fun post-punk-pop songs here, especially in the first half. Hooks, synths, big drums, moods. Not great, but pretty good on a bike ride to the dentist in the summer.

Lo mejor del disco es Mr Brightside, bueno para escucharlo eventualmente

The top half of this album is truly so good with so many iconic bangers but overall the whole thing is fine. Wild this was their debut though

Like a B+ on a neutral listen. Pretty vanilla and mainstream sound for supposed indie rock. No one likes it more than Brandon Flowers

Enjoyed the vibe, some parts not aged well but overall an interesting listen.

Blah. Nothing much to say about this one. Couple of good hits and a decent listen, but nothing special to me about this album. Definition of average.

Me gusta a pesar de no ser mi estilo habitual, es un álbum interesante.

eu amei, eu era viciada em maneskin e eu nunca tinha ouvido a versão original de somebody told me um arraso

I see the videos of people singing Mr. Brightside or The Killers in concert with the crowd singing the anthems and feel I totally missed the boat. These anthems feel like songs you had to listen to while with friends, getting drunk, when you were a teenager. For whatever reason this just wasn’t what we listened to in those days and I don’t think I can retrospectively get into it. When I listen now I only think “I don’t get it”. Respect it but a blind spot for me. Disco beat always works. Does he have a fake British accent?

awesome first 4 tracks. i can hear the new wave influence but also very 2000s rock. so nostalgic, perfect for listening at sunset while you drive to see someone you love.

Another one that belongs back in the 2000's

The album starts of with catchy beats. Mr Brightside has always been a great song in my opinion and one many people have on their playlists. The issue with this album is that it stays the same throughout with little to no change in style. The lyrics also get quite difficult to listen to. 3.5 stars

Energetic new rock in the style of the Strokes, etc. Catchy, clever, engaging.

First half is great then it drops off

An interesting mix of generic indie rock stuff and some interesting experimentation Mr Brightside somehow never gets old which should really happen

Classics I’ve been told, I liked the vibes but I wasn’t locked in.

pretty enjoyable listen. lots of filler its seems but some of the somgs i hadnt heard before were great.

Would be 4 if that last track didnt feel like owl city but boring and really cringe lyrics

The beginning of the album has the best hits with Mr. Brightside", "Somebody Told Me", "All These Things That I've Done" and "Smile Like You Mean It". After these hits the album fizzles out and becomes background music!

You can't argue with the sheer staying power of "Mr Brightside", but "Somebody Told Me" is a cracker too. It sits as a high 3 for me. I enjoyed the rest of the album but wouldn't go back.

Mm, I don't know, I feel like I should have enjoyed this album- it's that pop-indie vibe that should have been easy to listen to, but it was just fairly meh. I didn't grow up with this album to be fair, so maybe that's part of it.

good mix of nicely put together rock songs, can understand the fuss with these guys mr bright side is played everywhere but it’s understandable, it’s a great track, great tracks get cult statuses for that reason, just because you’ve heard it a million times doesnt mean it loses the features that made it good somebody told me is my fave 👍

The Killers...yay... Okay they're not that bad just not my go to band really. The album kicks off with Jenny was a Friend of Mine, you've got everything the fits the killers process, slamming basslines, funky drumbeats, distorted guitar, cutting through you have almost synth sounding keys and the sharp harsh vocals of Brandon Flowers, overall a good opening track. Then you have the infamous Mr Brightside, right this track gets on my nerves because it's just okay, that's it, its not some fucking era defying anthem, it's just been blasted at 3am in every club in the UK. The drums are tight, the basslines are funky and it's a lyrically strong track, it's okay but nothing to call home about. To give this album one thing would be that it's consistent, tracks like Smile like You Mean It, Somebody Told Me and Andy, You're a Star, stick to the same formula, Key heavy with funky basslines, all in 4/4 time signature, there's nothing wrong with that but it's no plummeting the depths of human experience, it's The Killers. Overall a fun and consistent album but no one I would go back to anytime soon. 2.5/5 MTW I like this for a Friday ! The Killers make me feel all kinds of happy nostalgic vibes so I am genuinely really excited to listen to this again. As far as debut albums go, this is an absolutely fantastic one (Mr Brightside can fuck off though) (Although I did have a lil smile listening to it). The bass line in "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine" is incredibly infectious. It can make the most uptight people run outside and start singing (Max). This is the most British album made by an American rock band I’ve ever heard. No wonder “Mr. Brightside” has stayed on the UK charts for so long! All jokes aside, Hot Fuss is a pretty enjoyable listen all things considered with a style to it that feels more influenced by Brit pop or British alternative rock more than anything else. In fact the sonic style of this record both vocally and musically feels like what you’d get if you wanted to make a modern Smiths record with synthesizers. The echoey, distant effect on the vocals feel incredibly reminiscent to the type of sound of the vocals off a track by The Smiths, and the guitar tones and riffs definitely have that similar swanky vibe to them (if that makes any sense). However, there are a few times where the use of synths and they style of production work to this album’s detriment. “On Top” uses a synth tone that sounds incredibly dated and is very irritating when listening to it crop up again and again throughout the song. Not to mention the vocal melody on the same track is incredibly obnoxious for the vast majority of the track, with the only part of the song that really gave me any reprieve was the bridge. However even that was butchered in when it crops up again during the outro of the song, so overall it made for an incredibly grating listening experience. Similar case with “Believe Me Natalie”, although to not nearly as irritable of an effect. That track suffers more from being a bit boring and repetitive with dates production value more so than incredibly tacky sonic choices. The album is a teenie tiny bit mindless, but in the perfect way, The Killers Hot Fuss doesn't require brain cells, or political snide, just a solid 8 pints and an embarrassing dad dance. - 3.8/5 HF xo

it got kinda boring pretty quickly

I somehow completely missed the Killers phenomenon the first time around. I usually blame Maggie's birth and infancy for my ignorance of a lot of pop culture from roughly 2003 - 2006 but I also just don't think I was receptive to this genre 20 years ago. I'm a little more open to it now. I never would have guessed these guys were American, based on their sound and their popularity abroad. OK, I said I'm a little more open to it now, and I did like this album at first, but by track 7 it all started sounding the same to me. #ImOLD I think using the same voice effect on every single song is part of the problem for me. This was the first time I've ever read the lyrics to Mr. Brightside, and why TF is that such a big song at sporting events? I get that the music is catchy and peppy, but the subject matter seems bizarre for Michigan football fans to chant together at every game.

A good 2000er Pop album, but a little bit soft

More mid-aughts alt-rock that the 1001 list seems to really like. I tried to listen with an open mind, but I still don't get it. Mr. Brightside is this album's big song. It's OK, but I don't think I'll ever understand why it is so immensely popular. There is nothing terrible on this album, but nothing great either. Just meh.

Mr Brightside and Somebody Told Me were fun. I like The Killers sound, it's quite unique in a sea of modern rock music.

Funny pop album with some highlight but all in all good middle-class music.

Another classic. Haven’t listened to this in a while

Pretty generic indie pop of the 2000s. I like it in general, it’s fine, but feels of a piece with the Strokes or Bloc Party. Can’t really tell them all apart at this juncture; it’s giving fad.

Really enjoyed this one.

I really have mixed feelings on this album. I've listened for years and thought I liked it OK but then I took it song by song: 1. Jenny Was a Friend of Mine 5 2. Mr. Brightside 4 3. Smile Like You Mean It 2 4. Somebody Told Me 4 5. All These Things That I've Done 3 6. Andy, You're a Star 1 7. On Top 2 8. Change Your Mind 2 9. Believe Me Natalie 2 10. Midnight Show 2 11. Everything Will Be Alright 2 Very front-loaded for me. That, and I'm a basic bitch and only really like the singles and hits ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I really don't enjoy Brandon Flowers' voice or that they put him so high on the mix over the music. Ah well. 2.6/5 -> 3/5

CLassic

First 5 songs are... Killer. The rest pretty much a waste of time. Some absolute bangers for singles though and you can see why they went on to have the career they did, although I'm not sure they ever reached the heights on their debut (apart from maybe When you Were Young)...

I used to turn this album off after track five but now that I actually had to hear it in full, it's not that bad. It's just that it's front loaded with great singles and then the rest are either plain good or forgettable. There's a difference between a good song and Mr. Brightside. Allow me to say that my past opinions have slightly let up. Andy, you're a star! (7/10, 3/5)

There are a couple of great songs here, but there are also a bunch of mediocre songs as well. Brandon Flowers appeal as a frontman and lyricist didn’t seem to age well.

It reminds me a bit of the slim Homer Simpson meme. The album starts with a few really delicious rock/post-punk titles with a scrumptious bass in the mix, but falls off a bit when you progress through the album – and you notice it when looking the stream counts. Still, there are barely any bad songs on here and it definitely expanded my horizon towards the post punk genre!

Mr Brightside and a few new original sounds... but its so inspirational listening to it directly feels a bit derivative now

I was in high school when this came out and I was not into it. This kind of pop rock was not something I was drawn to. I thought it was way too mainstream and uninteresting. However, I am at my core a poptimist who wants to enjoy things. I like fun! This is fun. “Somebody Told Me” is an outright banger. I’m hearing some Britpop influence which I appreciate. Overall decent but much more fun at the beginning than the end.

Not bad, 2 big radio hits - otherwise pretty generic 2000s “indie” rock

Me ha gustado bastante el album y creo que las canciones estan bien, no digo que me encante y que algunas las escuché diariamente pero alguna qur otra vez no estaría mal.

There I was, twelve years old, no clue what came before. No Interpol, no Strokes, no Libertines on my radar. Just Hot Fuss in my headphones, and the world cracked open like a crisp can of pop on a too-hot afternoon in 2004. It was loud. It was shiny. It was dramatic in all the right ways. I didn’t care about scene cred or who did it first. I just knew I liked it. Now, years later; I’ve eaten at better restaurants, I’ve heard more 'important' records. But I’ll say this, Hot Fuss has aged better than most of its cooler, leather-jacket-wearing peers. Some things built for the mainstream actually last. And this one? It’s still got it. Just so we're clear here, I’m talking about the first half. The second half is straight-to-VHS. Leftover sausage roll after a birthday party. You chew through it because it’s there, but you’re not going back for seconds. Still, for a moment, it felt like something new. And for a twelve-year-old kid, that was enough.

good album some filler here and there but not too bad

Sorry Matt 6.85/10

Frontloaded AF but a good time overall.

Yeah nah. Not for me. Not flat out terrible but

I really only like Mr. Bright side. But it wasn’t bad!

point6.

A lot of fun but the backside of the album is forgettable. The front half could be mistaken for a "killers greatest hits" album. I mean... Holy shit that's a lot of bangers for one lp.

White boy tried being sad! Pop but woe is me mentality! Rock wannabe but that vocal filter though!

Good album. Lots of singles!

Some good songs

Temas que he escuchado siempre y como soy tan mala para localizar artista y tema, no sabía que eran de ellos...album 100% rock indie Le doy un 6/10 de la escala wow

Really strong first half that becomes hook-less fluff after that. Combine that with some uninteresting, occasionally self-indulgent lyrics, and you have a recipe for an album that ends up being pretty tough to sit through. I do have to respect that aforementioned first half though, some phenomenal tracks there.

I've always liked The Killers, but listen to this album was slightly disappointing. I had a bit of a "so what" feeling. Yes, there are good great songs but in the end it's plain rock that sounds OK but does not fascinate me. Nothing ground-breaking about this. So even though I like (not love) it I'm not sure this is a "must hear" album and it doesn't quite reach the level of creativity or uniqueness to deserve a 4 or a 5 for me. But I'd happily listen to this or even go to a gig, I think they're very good in a live setting.

★★★¼

Turns out I know every song on this album, I guess because of the radio and the last long at every club. Nostalgic for it! Don't necessarily like it that much but nostalgic

6.5/10 Strong first half with the upbeat and “killer” production. The second half is much more underwhelming Favorite Tracks: Mr. Brightside, Somebody Told Me

The hits are definitely catchy. The rest is mediocre 2000s pop music. Not unlistenable. 3/5 #82

a little bit one note

i've only heard the tracks that went mainstream off of here Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine - 4/5 Mr. Brightside - 5/5 Smile Like You Mean It - 5/5 Somebody Told Me - 5/5 All These Things That I've Done - 4/5 Andy, You're A Star - 2/5 On Top - 4/5 Change Your Mind - 3/5 Believe Me Natalie - 4/5 Midnight Show - 3/5 Everything Will Be Alright - 2/5 Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll - 2/5 Average score: 3.6/5 (rounding down) my only exposure to this album prior to today was track 2-5 (Mr. Brightside - All These Things That I've Done). they're all great in my opinion, especially Smile Like You Mean It. it could be just the nostalgia talking, but i feel like that's kinda the appeal of a group like The Killers as for the songs i hadn't heard yet, it was a mixed bag. there were some noteworthy ones, such as On Top and Believe Me Natalie. i didn't care for Andy You're A Star or Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll, mostly due to the corny lyrics. Everything Will Be Alright had potential, but fell short in terms of lyrics as well i'm not sure the album as a whole is something i'd consider essential to listen to, but the popular tracks are definitely worth listening to at least once. it's difficult to rate this album on such a rigid scale (really wish they'd at least let you do half-star ratings here), but i think 3 stars is about as high as i'm willing to rate this one

Started well but lost momentum

A couple of brilliant tracks that everyone knows. But the rest is nothing special

This is my first listen to this album (or any of their albums) , never got into the Killer's past hearing them on the radio. That is so many hits at the top of the album. Probably should be four stars based on just the first five tracks (back half is forgettable), but doubt I'll ever put this album on again, and I think wanting to listen to an album again will be a requirement to get 4 or 5 stars.

Killers are very overrated. Some decent songs on the front half. Everything will be alright is one of the worst songs I've ever heard. One of the best debut records ever? Get out of here Rating: 3.0

Groupe inconnu. =>3/5

This album has aged majorly, but most songs still hold up. Songs like somebody told me or midnight show have aged like milk, while Mr bright side and smile like you mean it have aged like wine. This album is a mixed basket, but it’s mostly solid.

A batch of good songs and catchy singalong hooks with an early 2000s indie rock sound and some post-punk revival tendencies. The first half of the album is pretty consistently solid, but the back half of the album doesn’t add much for me (other than the closer, which has one of those big singalong hooks). I can’t quite place it but there just seems to be something lacking for me here - some type of energy, edge, intensity, fun, character (though they do show this in Mr. brightside, their best known song and probably Best song)…I just don’t find it quite as satisfying as I expect it to be.

Mr. Brightside is a millennial anthem, if not THE millennial anthem. This album is nostalgic more than anything, and is somehow vintage. It is both emblematic of a moment in time and a classic you can listen to 1000 times over.

I thought I'd like it a lot more. I'm not even sure I should give it a 3

It's decent. It's inoffensive. I just wasn't wowed by it. A couple of standout tracks, but Franz Ferdinand did this early aughts sound better and more interestingly.

Some really good songs, but yet some mediocre alt 2000s music as well 3.5

Part of the soundtrack of my university days - for good or ill. It's a long old album and probably could be a couple of tracks shorter and more focused, but the singles still stand up IMO

Gustatzen zait talde hau (baina gustokoetarikoen bat ez da) eta diska hau (bere lehen diska) ez zait asko gustatzen, gerokoak kaleratu zitueneak hobeak dira niretzako.

Firer half of the album is especially good! Enjoyed this listen.

Tricky one. The first half is as good as indie rock gets. It's undeniable. The second half is very forgettable. If the songs were spread evenly, would it improve the ranking? Impossible to know.

The Killers are like a brightly, expertly papered wall with no hooks to hang anything on it.

Oh these tunes are nice and slightly generic and I do love it when artists sing songs to specific names (Andy, Natalie etc) but this album does not send me to the moon or anywhere even close.

Wait! Is Hot Fuzz a reference to this album? Can’t believe I only just realised that! Sadly, the album was not as enjoyable as Simon Pegg’s comedy masterpiece. Mr Brightside and Somebody Told Me were enjoyable, but is that because they’re good or because I know them so well? Maybe I know them so well because they’re good? Either way, the other songs weren’t known to me and were just plain ok. Decent debut album, but a lot of filler.

The synth rock play is fun and it’s done in a nice smooth minimalist way by the killers . Really enjoyed it Unfortunately side B is a bit of a let down and stops this album from being top tier for me but def turns me into an intrigued killers fan

00’er indierock, lidt generisk men også nogle ægte bangers

Bra side 1, så detter det helt av midt i, med litt ymse, så plukker det seg litt opp igjen på et par låter mot slutten.

It's not bad, I remember hearing some of these songs back when it came out. Of course Mr. Brightside is/was super popular. I think I hear this enough in pop culture to not need to hear it again although I don't regret hearing it this one time.

Middle of the road listen. Did not move me.

Mr. Brightside and songs that sound like Mr. Brightside. Not bad.

Last 2 songs sold 😞 Not cohesive + lazy vocals 2nd half, held up by a handful of bangers

Good songs, not a very good album. The killers aren’t good enough for their non-hits to be enjoyable

Took me back to my Uni days, rocking out to the first five songs or so on my iPod, then getting bored and reaching for the skip button. Nothing has really changed IMO. 4 stars plus for the beginning, 2.5 for the remainder.

Suprisingly good.

Was ok

“All these things that I’ve done” deserves what “Mr brightside” had.

Still an OK album, but more nostalgia value than anything.

Gets better at the end

Already listened to

# Background 2004 debut album # Themes - Domestic violence and murder - Jealousy - Unrequited love/rejection - Obsession - Gender and sexuality (*Somebody Told Me* and *Andy You’re a Star*) # Style - Big, wall of sound - Layered guitars - Vocals front and center, harmonies are smaller - Soaring crescendos - Synths - Emo, pop punk adjacent - Palm muting, power chords - Big kick drum - Distorted bass and guitar - Minor, melodramatic - Impressionistic, but mostly literal, grounded lyrics - Story-telling - Anthemic - Autotune - Reverb/delay on vocals # Notes Flowers says he was influenced by The Smiths and there are times when he sounds like Morrissey (esp. *Smile Like You Mean It*). *All These Things That I’ve Done* sounds a bit Beatles inspired, in terms of both the kind of delay on the vocals in the beginning and the repeated refrain at the end (like *Hey, Jude*). *Believe Me Natalie* is pretty cool — U2 guitars, cool drum rhythm.

Mr Brightside is a classic guilty pleasure but the rest isn't particularly interesting to me.

Ok mais pas mon style

Had never really listened to the back half of this album...the first half is where all of the radio hits were. A good example of the popular opinion getting it right...the back half is less exciting. Belive Me Natalie is a notable exception - really good song with excellent use of horns.

Not bad. One hit at least

I loved it so so so much

Great hits, some of the other tracks are a bit forgettable

Pretty good

The first half of this album is surprisingly good and catchy "All These Things That I've Done", "Somebody Told Me" and of course the hit that made this album prominent: "Mr. Brightside" the second half is pretty forgettable though. 6/10 Favourite: All These Things That I've Done Least Favourite: Andy, You're a Star

Tightly executed post-punk revival. A lot like The Strokes or Franz Ferdinand etc. but even hornier if that's possible. A wee bit of brit-pop and Smiths influences, perhaps. Got pretty tedious toward the end, but a couple of the early deep cuts were enjoyable, "Andy You're a Star" notably. Has a good energy, a bit dismal at times. Glad to finally hear it as my wife sings along such that I can't really hear the tunes. Good drums on this.

The singles are great (especially so if you haven't had them thrown at you for 20+ years) but the back half is so forgettable

A few all time classics on this one, but a some forgettable tracks as well.

A few really good songs. A few boring ones. Overall average.

In my option this is the old killers album everything since has been bilge on the whole with a few mediocre “hits “

I was originally somewhat reticent, I like the Killers, but something you have to listen to? The entire album is good.

Had heard the singles. The rest of the songs are very much like the singles. Kind of blended into one long whining guitar riff.

Dadefür drü Messerstich in Unterleib!

Fantastic first half. Not as good second half. I think it deserves to be here, though. It's like a time capsule

3 out of 5. I only know this band from their singles way back when I listened to the radio more. This one pleasantly surprised me.

Inget som stack ut av de låtarna jag inte hört innan, skapligt album men inte imponerande

Postpunk og new wave blend. Godt album

I have good memories of this alt-rock popularity phase. I was thinking that maybe after years it could be cringey but it was just fine. Without nostalgia it's run of the mill 3/5.

Not quite a great album but there are good songs on here. Mr Brightside is a staple at sporting events especially Michigan football games. Overall good but there are lulls outside of the singles that push the album to the next level.

Some good singles, but it’s not an album I can love

Couple big songs on here from my younger years that really resonated with me. However the rest of the album didn't really speak to me overall. Good, but not outstanding for me.

This is the first album from the Killers, and it is very good for a debut. There are at least a couple of radio hits on this album (Mr. Brightside, Somebody Told Me) and maybe more (I don’t know). I enjoyed “All These Things That I’ve Done” and the two singles but the remaining tracks were just ok for me.

I liked it. It's not my type of music though.

first half renaissance painting of a stallion, second half child's drawing of a horse

Expected to love this but it really drops off after the first 5 tracks.

Really solid start that trails off. Still enjoyed it a lot but might be another 10 years until I listen to the whole album again

An okay/solid rock record. The Killers sound is a little too slick for me overall, and the second half felt like a lot of the same. That said, “Smile Like You Mean It” is a total banger and by far the best song on this record. It’s a great song. And like any good millennial, I’m a fan of “Mr. Brightside” — the defining party song of our generation? I don’t think I understand “Somebody told me” but I think I enjoy it. And on the B side “Change Your Mind” is good.

Has there ever been an album of two halves quite like this? Side one, rock solid 10/10. Side 2, 6/10 if I'm being generous. Personally I have always preferred Sam's town but this is an amazing debut album that rightly propelled the band to global megastardom.

The quintessential millennial rock album. First half til "change your mind" is nothing but bangers. Then after falls sort until the end with "glamorous indie rock and roll". I Lowkey hate "Mr. brightside", but I still listened and actually enjoyed it with the full album listen. Fav tracks: "on top" "all these things that I've done" "change your mind"

I was a 13 year old lad in Britain when this released, it may as well have been our National Anthem for that decade. That being said, I will try my best to remain impartial when reviewi-JEAAAAALOUSY

Late 70s/80s New Wave sound (keyboards, accented vocals, off-kilter guitar lines and beats). In general, it's consistently good, but nothing really stands out to "wow" me... Highlights: "Smile Like You Mean It" (nice keyboard line running through the song with a more "goth" type of vocal (influenced by The Cure?), "All These Things That I've Done" (starts with an anthemic 80s U2 sound to it, but then has a Lennon-esque sound to the vocals then a Cars-like breakdown with chugging guitar chords, then the choir comes in...), "Believe Me Natalie" (anthemic guitars and expressive vocals, gets a little mess near the end (why the horns?))

It's not really "my thing" but I am aware of their existence and have heard the more well-known tracks before. It was ok, it never crossed my mind to turn it off, but I never really got into it. It feels bit better than 2 stars, so I'll give it 3.

The way memory functions is weird – if “Somebody told me” was released six months after Funeral for a Friend’s debut album then why do I remember being a child when listening to the former, but feeling like a grown up listening to the latter? It might be because The Killers – purveyors of absolutely OK, post-punk-ish, synthy-sort-of pop that you’re always happy to hear at weddings, or playing in the background of a pub you’re at for a 50th birthday, you know, adult occasions – are totally and utterly grown-up. They’re Interpol for mums; knowing better than to do something unexpected (might throw your back out!). Safe. And to that end we have a record that starts with back-to-back bangers. Twenty minutes of top ten material that twenty years on has your listener saying “was this our millennial Nevermind?” The thing about 20 minutes though is that’s pretty much as long as it takes to drive to the supermarket and back. And I feel like that’s not an accident. This record was made to be listened to on the way to Tesco. It was made to deliver a feeling that’s a bit like nostalgia – it’s fresh material, but it nods back hard enough to get your Gen Xers suddenly feeling 18 again. How else can a person be expected to get through the weekly shop? The first half is an embarrassment of riches, but it isn’t hyperbole to say – and certainly in the context of epochal hits like “Mr Brightside”, “Somebody told me” and jams as solid as “Jenny was a friend of mine” – that the second half is a bit embarrassing. If memory serves, then The Killers give us a better album with “Sam’s Town”. But then memory is a funny thing.

I'd never say that Hot Fuss didn’t have great singles, although I preferred the darker 80s music that Interpol pulled from

There are some good songs on this, but I honestly only thought this was decent. The hits are good, but not as good as I had previously thought, and I didn’t get much out of the second half.

It's OK. Makes me think of that rock band guitar hero game

The album is very much of its era: 2000s rock. I'm not a fan of the synthesizer.

I was there, and in the right age when it went out, so definitely some good memories from that album. I still listen to these songs every once in a while, and it's a great album, but I wouldn't say it's a "part of me" when it comes to my listening habits.

The first 5 songs of this album are generation defining indie rock. The rest is filler. But my god they have some hits.

The guys had the alternative vibes way before this boomer vibes came into the trend. Not each song is nice to me, but a couple of them are very worthy to listen, I can hear more modern hits referencing their music from these. "Somebody Told Me" and "Smile Like you Mean" are added to my favorites from the whole album.

I would like to know how much these guys made out of tv/movie royalties. These songs were everywhere... totally deserved though. Couple of good songs I've never heard before, but I doubt I'd listen to this album again.

I wonder if the killers knew what a defining album they made. Some classic tunes on this album

Album art:3

Amazing how many of these songs I’ve heard. But I still think it’s just average soft rock.

Classic but also… I want to like the Killers so bad. All the cool girls did on my fanfics but besides their super popular songs… but I did know more than I thought.

jenny - 8 - banger tune, the synth is a bit cringe mr. brightside - 8 - classic tune, liking thrle harmonies smile - 6.5 - not bad, but not that creative either somebody - 5.5 - kinda annoying tbh all these things - 8 - loving the chorus and gospel influence, bass line great as always andy - 6.5 - a nice/needed change in style, pretty badass tunes, but the climax is not that convincing on top - 7 - some nice guitar melodies, synth line pretty good change - 6 - a bit linear and uninspired believe - 6 - kinda uncoherent midnight show - 6 - straightforward Killers song, but the melodies are not memorable everything - 6.5 - kinda lame percussion, interesting change in the context of the album, catchy chorus, but not memorable, nice synth-y insertions glamorous - 7.5 - great chorus and vocals, good variations, a bit of rock opera 6.79

is hot fuss a product of its time or is its time a product of hot fuss

Why does this album (with the exception of All These Things That I've Done) make me feel existential dread (and why doesn't that song?) Is it because I was 11? Is it because it's a Tuesday in the winter?

This is one of those albums that’s solid, occasionally catchy, but doesn’t totally blow me away. It’s got a polished, synthy indie-rock sound that was definitely of its time, but outside of the big singles, a lot of it sort of blends together for me. The singer has a distinct voice, but depending on the song, it either works or starts to grate a little. Overall, it’s a decent listen and fun in spots. 3.5

An interesting, straight forward album but nothing on here really jumped out at me that would make me put this on a must listen list. At the time I am interested in what their other albums sound like while listening actively. I do remember some of these singles on the radio when they came out, but they didn't grab me enough to not change the radio station.
