Overrated but still good
To me, the consistency of this album is a bit annoying. There are a few breaks in the “I’m fucked, you’re fucked, we’re all fucked” narrative which are very necessary, but even with those it still gets old. There are instrumental high points as well, particularly near the end of the album, but many filler tracks just have a typical pop-punk rhythm. 4/10

Heartwarming because this album was my contemporary - but generally still holds as a petulant 90s suburban Ramones album - might be hard to translate across generations.

I generally like Green Day, but for some reason I’ve just never enjoyed Dookie.
It's really hard for me to be objective about this one, the nostalgia boost is so high. It's pretty one note but it's a note I still like 20 years after first hearing it and stacked my 256mb MP3 player with this, Warning and Nirvana.

Really fun and lighthearted music. This what I imagine high school in America sounds like. Unfortunately every song is exactly the same as the next and therefore I'm settling in a respectable 3/5

Lots of bangers, including 90s classics. These songs just have such a fun every to them most of the time. Impossible not the tap for foot or nod your head.
Nostalgic
I was only familiar with the International Superhits, and they remain the only songs I will continue to listen to on their own. In their defense, it's 5/15 tracks, which is a pretty sizeable portion. Solid songs, the rest just don't grab me in 2022.

Amazing nostalgia
Liked it but found there wasn't enough sound variety between the songs throughout the album tbh. A couple of songs stood out and added to my Playlist.

Bubble gum punk at best. A few tracks that are listenable. Don't compare this album to all the pretentious "we still think we're punk" crap that came after this album. And they lose points for trying to make everyone think that they are British.
Billie Joe Armstrong's romantic lyricism, Mike Dirnt's infectious bass lines, and Tre Cool's eccentric drumming combine to amplify the catchy, distortion-heavy pop-punk to greatness. A fantastic example of why pop punk is, in fact, one of the best genres of all time. 15 (well, 14) songs that all have bulletproof hooks combined with the angst of punk rock. Together it becomes a super tight collection of no skips, except "All By Myself". Favorite Tracks: "Burnout", "Having A Blast", "Chump", "Longview", "Welcome To Paradise", "Basket Case", "She", "When I Come Around", "Coming Clean", "In The End"
20 something years later and I can still relate to feeling like a bag of shit inside a ball of anxiety. One of the best albums of the 90s

While this is not my favorite Green Day album, it's easy to see the influence that it had on pop punk music that came after it. It's very catchy. I'm not a big fan of all the immature lyrics, but they definitely fit the theme of the album. Favorites: Basket Case, She, When I Come Around

I remember this album being super divisive with my friends that were into punk. They kept calling these guys sellouts, which I just couldn't wrap my brain around. How could a band be sellouts on their debut album, when they'd only just begun. Wouldn't that just mean that they are what they are? And why give a shit anyhow - the album was great! The album is extremely tight. Billie and Mike's guitars are locked in an intricate and electrified swing dance, each locked to the same beat, but each with their own lightning fast and elaborate roles to play. Tre's drums are pounding, precise and raucously joyous. I think these descriptions stand out the most in the songs "Burnout", "Welcome to Paradise" and "In the End". Beyond the intrumentals though, the lyrics are actually about something, many speaking to the disillusioned and angst-filled vibe of the times. That and masturbation. For me, this album ushered in my punk-rock awakening. It intrigued me and got me interested enough to want to delve into the genre further. And it's that bridging role that this album played for so many, that I think drew ridicule and acclaim alike. Some wanted to keep their punk secret safe and unsullied, whereas others wanted to see what they'd been missing. I for one, was glad for it.

An OK album with some catchy songs but at the time I liked that Offspring album (Smash) more. The problem with Dookie: it is not fast enough - the songs should have gone through the Ramones machine. :-)
Very, very mainstream punk pop. Decent sounding band, but ultimately I am finding their music rather boring.

Rock. Jag har aldrig tidigare hört ett album som lyckas verkställa ett så rockigt som detta. Det är för att de lyckades skapa exakt den känsla och upplevelse som jag söker i rock. Det vill säga iver och engagemang. Speciellt låten Welcome to Paradise fångade mitt intresse. Åt andra sidan kändes musiken åt det simpla och andefattiga hållet apropå dess instrumentval och strukturer. Däremot förstärkte det musikens klockrena melodier. Renheten och vildheten i musiken samarbetade funktionellt och lyckat. Trots att den simplistiska renheten saknades innehåll och originalitet för att det skulle kunna vara något mer än vad det är vid detta tillstånd.
Noch eins? Nicht euer Ernst?! Das erste war schon zu viel. Ich gestehe, dass ich mir keinerlei Mühe gegeben und nach 59 Sekunden ausgemacht habe. Sehr gerne nie wieder.

Pop punk until I die, bitches. I am the exact perfect age to love Green Day, and I really do. I first heard American Idiot, so it took my a while to work my way back to Dookie. This album has so many great tracks on it, and is full of a great energy. Makes me feel like I'm in high school again in a good way.

I remember this one. My (younger) brother had a copy. I probably was a bit too much of a music snob to admit that I liked it but even I can still sing along with the hits from it now. Great fun. Played it twice just because. 7/10
Weird, I was just thinking today that sooner or later I would have to deal with this album on this list. How do I rate this? I used to love it (well, like it a lot) and since cooled off on it quite a bit as I have developed a pretty negative opinion on pop punk and California punk in general. Green Day's downward trajectory as a band haven't helped things... although my opinion of this album hasn't gone downhill as much as my opinion of the Sublime discography since my adolescence. Do I hate this album? No, not really. But when you evaluate an album for its role as an influential album - which this certainly was - shouldn't you take into account what it influenced? What Green Day influenced was garbage. Much like Nirvana, the music that took after it was a musical dead end. Should the parent be punished for the sins of the child? No, not necessarily, but Green Day also isn't anywhere near as good of a band as Nirvana (and I wouldn't exactly call myself a Nirvana fanboy). I suppose all this hemming and hawing is just navel-gazing while I decide if this deserves a 2 (probably a 2.75) or a 3 (no higher than a 3.5). Either way, it falls somewhere in the middle - not U2 terrible, not Kate Bush great.
Simple but amazingly catchy melodies
The album that launched a thousand bands. Being a big pop punk guy, it's weird I never sat down with this, but the radio did kill a few of these. Still a tight effort. Favorite tracks: "Longview", "Pulling Teeth", "She"

Great albumn
Longview, Basket Case, and When I Come Around are top three. The album as a whole is really repetitive with a calm ending of All by Myself which was a nice change of pace.
1-3 tracks sounded kind of dooker dookie, long view is good welcome to paradise is also very good Basket case and she are very good. Roots, and come around are ok, coming clean and emenius sleepus are very good. 20/30

First punk album bought after buying the Welcome to Paradise single on tape from the Merry Hill branch of Our Price in 1994!
When this album came out, you didn't have to go far to find someone with a copy of the album. Green Day's sound is easily recognizable, but "Longview", "Basket Case", and "When I Come Around" are the only tracks that I recognized having listed to before. I listened to the album back then, but wasn't sure if I liked the band or not. With a re-listen, this album still seems at best to be "okay".
Fun, energetic and melodic punk rock.
Think this was so refreshing in 1994 as the world was getting a little sick of grunge and Nirvana by numbers landfill bands. "Basket case" and "when I come around" are punk rock classics. Stone cold classics! "Welcome to Paradise" and "Longview" are also great but not sure some of the rest of the songs reach the heights of those 4, but they are very much enjoyable none the less. Can we have this version of Green day back please? 4/5

For better or worse, can't listen to Basket Case anymore without thinking of that fucking vocoded Steamed Hams video. Awesome album, discovered some tracks I didn't really know before. Apparently hardcore fans disliked this new, cleaner sound when this album came out, but guys, it's still named Dookie and about mass murder and depression and jacking off. Even on a sub-40 minute bomb, I get tired of the same core musical elements over and over. I know that it's the same thing for basically any genre, but I feel this especially strongly with punk. All that to say that I like this album, but I don't love it. 3.5 rounded down.
Such a classic modern pop-punk record, this takes me right back to being a moody-too-cool-for-school teenager. Dookie guides you through the inner musings of Billie-Joe around themes such as boredom, anxiety, relationships, and sexuality. Good stuff, heard most of the singles from this before. It's just simple melodies and three power chords for the whole album, but it's still enjoyable. Shows you can make great music without it being overly complex

Listened to this a lot as a teenager, so it was interesting to revisit. Weirdly, the stand out tracks had really stuck in my head, but the rest of the album had faded away almost entirely, which isn't exactly a great endorsement! Fave tracks - "Basket Case", "Longview", "Welcome to Paradise", predictably enough!

I've always had such mixed feelings about this band. I am drawn in by a lot of their hooks, they play super-tight, and some of the lyrics are solid...and yet, I can't quite put my finger on it, they don't fully click with me. I wish I could explain it -- I like when I can articulate what I do and don't like in art, not for any other reason than I'm interested in that process (and I really love hearing thoughtful analysis and criticism from others) -- so here's a stab: I think it's because to me it sounds like what a band would sound like if someone constructed a band in response to the grunge movement. Does that make sense? I don't know...when I find myself enjoying one of their songs, I feel exactly the same way I feel when I enjoy a Monkees song (and some of the Monkees songs are catchy and fun, too).
Yup, good, short and catchy songs. Dookie is one of my least favorite words but that's the only criticism I have. Also the last song was weak.

I definitely really liked this when I was much younger but barely remember most of the tracks. Compared to American Idiot for example I see this as a pretty restrained and tight Green Day album. Much less offensive to the ears than I was expecting. No that’s doing it a disservice. There’s some cracking songs on here and If this was still my bag then I’d be all over this, preaching the good word. Really rather enjoyed it
Let’s get it out of the way: Basket Case is an all time pop-punk classic, and one of the great rock songs of the late 20th century. I always felt like Green Day were a relic playing catch-up with the younger bands, by the time I was seriously getting into rock music, but turns out teenage me knew nothing. The fact is they are one of the most influential, pioneering bands of that 90s-00s era where punk rock went mainstream. Dookie is a great slice of pop-punk. It’s relentless and energetic, melodic, fun. But there’s still something that keeps me from ever truly going all in on Green Day. Can I say what it is? Do I know? Armstrong’s voice? They were just too damn popular? Or maybe it’s fundamentally that (much as I love it) pop-punk is an inherently limited sound? Either way: A.) it was fun to revisit this, and it still hold up incredibly well; B.) I assumed Green Day followed My Chem to The Black Parade (ie, playing punk whilst dressed as a goth), but it was the other way around. Time for me to put some respect back on Green Day’s name in my own head.
This possibly suffered from the fact that the pop-infused punk revival wasn't a movement as much as a (very appreciated) attempt to keep a previous movement alive. Sounded vital at the time, no doubt, but now that time has passed I mostly see it as shadow play. It definitely suffered from me being flat out of juice yesterday. If I listened with a few more spoons in my drawer, I might feel differently, as I still found the non-stop momentum enjoyable, Armstrong's nasal whine weirdly winning, the drum fills energising, and the smart-dumb lyrics dumb-smart. Basically, don't pay attention to my rating.

Despite the consensus of Green Day fans being that Dookie is their best record by a significant margin, it still sounds sort of like "Dookie" to me. The instrumentals, the tempo, the vocal style, the lyrical content is the same on nearly every track here. If you listen to the first one, it seems like you really have experienced everything Green Day has to offer. It's not necessarily bad, it's just average dumbed-down skate punk that does absolutely nothing for me.
Always been a big fan of the band (at least up to American Idiot) and my first concert with no tutor was a Green Day one lol, funnily I did not attended to a second one until 15 years later. I did not give any relevant review to American Idiot (it reads only “Stone cold classic”) but I’ll try to say a bit more on this. I was 7 when this one came out but I remember it very fondly, I really liked the energy and the videos and my siblings loved them also so it was a whole family listen, ever since, we liked every subsequent album specially Nimrod. That all stopped with 21st century breakdown but we had a good go with the band. Listening to Dookie today I gotta say is not as good as I remembered but When I Come Around and specially Basket Case are true classics and the album was influential AF, it is a fun album with a lot of charisma and really one to have listened before dying.

Loro è un gruppo che ho sempre odiato. Anche negli anni a venire quando la vecchiaia ti fa rivalutare in tuoi gusti musicali adolescenziali, la mia opinione su di loro è rimasta sempre la stessa. Ora che sono stato obbligato ad ascoltare quest'album mi rode pure il culo. Penso che la voce di Billie Joe Armstrong sia fastidiosa (anche se i questo senso quella di Liam Gallagher è irraggiungibile). In generale mi sembrano tipo canzonette.
This album is my favorite work from Green Day with the exception of “all by myself” it’s just a little weird but the he guitar in the background is great, just the vocals are not awesome.

En av de första skivorna som jag stötte på när det gällde skatepunk. Nostalgi, men fortfarande riktigt bra låtar och texterna håller även om det är mer tonårsriktat. Bra trummor och gitarrer över lag. "Basket Case" är givetvis den stora singeln, men jag minns att jag tyckte mycket om "When I Come Around" och givetvis den gömda låten "All By Myself".

Hit after hit on this album. Sometimes the songs blur together but that's not necessarily a bad thing since it's so high-energy.

What a blast from the past - an album I absolutely loved when I was a kid. Frenetic, tight, and well-produced pop-punk. It has some great songs but it's also a bit one-dimensional. Maybe also I've just heard it too many times. I wish I could love it as much as I did 25 years ago.
Some pretty good rock with fun songs. Not exactly my type of rock, and maybe that’s just because the vocalist isn’t my favorite, but it was still great. Instrumentation is fantastic, let those guitars flyyyyy

In conclusione: Io i Green Day non li ho mai sopportati. Gruppi come gli Offspring o almeno i primi Blink ce mettevano un po' di sforzo, i Green Day già dall'inizio spuntavano ai soldi. Ho comunque riascoltato questo album in modo critico per vedere se avrei cambiato idea. Tranne qualche piccolo fill di batteria che ho apprezzato, il resto è stata abbastanza un'agonia da ascoltare nonostante la durata molto breve dell'album. Dato che in effetti non ho mai dato un uno me sembra il momento buono.
Straziante, ho aspettato con ansia la fine che è arrivata con una canzone sulla masturbazione che alla fine è quasi tra i brani migliori. Tra le note positive c’è il suono di basso che è talmente brutto che quasi lo apprezzo. Colonna sonora perfetta per una partita di beer pong dopo la finale di football.
This is a very solid album. Green Day has their vibe and if you can't abide it, then none of this will work for you. But this songwriting is tight as a drum. Every song here has something melodic to grab on to. Even lowkey lofi closer is pretty crucial.

The only Green Day album I can stomach. That's something, yeah?
Longview has lyrics that hit hard these days. Never used to appreciate Greenday much when I was younger, apart from maybe American Idiot. Never been too familiar with Dookie. I know Basket Case of course. A real classic for sure. I find it hard to believe this album is from the 90s to be honest. The way "all by myself" closes the album with a lip pop is kinda entertaining.
I have distinct memories of listening to this album riding to/from soccer practice. Classic 90s alt-rock: punk-jammy tunes that pump you up, irreverent lyrics covering a range of issues,

Green Day's first major label release that was brimming with catchy singles making the airwaves for the early 90's. Its fast pace and wit in lyrics make it a lot more poppy than purists would care to admit.

I've always said Green Day were shit but never truly listened to them properly to back up my argument. Now I have.

Yeah, no, I didn't like it at all. But on the bright side it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected it to be! Just a bit bad, bland, boring, unappealing - but not nearly as annoying as expected!
All these bands only have one song! It's fine, but I don't see why they got so big? MTV? Kooky singer?

Great iconic album
Love Green Day and hadn't listened to this album in a long time so really enjoyed it (Longview is my favourite on the album).
Dookie is the sort of basic update of 50s rock 'n roll/70s punk that always gives music critics a hardon, but I do understand the appeal. The melodic lines are clean, the songs are tightly written and performed, there's a ton of energy, Billy Joe Armstrong's voice is perfect for this sort of material, and the crystal clear production showcases the trio admirably. But frankly, it's all a bit monotonous and one dimensional. The majority of the songs are straight up ravers with hardly any shading. Even The Stooges had the noisescapes of guitarists Ron Ashton and James Williamson to keep things interesting. The band doesn't really throw any curveballs with the lone exception of Longview, Billy Joe's paean to masturbation. On that tune, Michael Pritchard's bass plays a major role on the verses and Billy Joe's voice and guitar comes roaring back on the choruses. I was always happy when that song came on the radio, and I didn't really mind the other hits like When I Come Around and Welcome to Paradise either. But a whole album's worth of that kind of stuff and I start shifting in my seat halfway through. While it's all perfectly executed, I can't in all conscience give this more than 3/5.

It’s no American Idiot but Basket Case is a tune
I remember this album positively. I saw them as a punk resurgence although, as I'm learning from 1001, there was no shortage of punk and new wave resurgences. I like their energy and in particular am impressed by the sheer speed of the drummer's drum strokes. The hits on this album were a lot of fun. I grew weary of their subsequent albums as they became more and more CFNY and this was after CFNY became less and less CFNY. I do like this one.

Like a bit of Green Day
Now, don't hate, but it's gotta be a 3 point something for me. The hits are obvs much higher, but out of 15 tracks there are a lot of forgettable/cool but non stand out ones - they start to blur into one for me, some sharing similar melody and chord ideas, not really differentiating themselves form one another. I have to judge it as an album! But I enjoyed it!
Honestly, this album has no right to be this good but that doesn't change the fact that it is. It's really simple and all of the songs kind of sound the same but I'll be damned if it isn't an effective formula. Also All By Myself absolutely sucks and ruins the ending. Favorite Songs: Burnout, Longview, Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case, When I Come Around, In The End Least Favorite Song: All By Myself Decent 8/10

DELIGHTED to see this come up! One of my fave albums of all time and easily the best Green Day album, with Nimrod a close second (although it's not in the 1001 and American Idiot is 😤). No duff tracks and many highlights including some of Green Day's best songs of all time. Plus, it has a hidden track about wanking, what's not to like? It is regarded as the moment the band "sold out" but it was an album that, along with "Smash" by The Offspring, opened my ears to so many US punk bands like The Vandals, Pennywise, NOFX, etc, etc. 10/10

Nostalgia vibes. But apart from the bigger hits I hadn’t missed listening to this album in full. Some undeniable classics, but also some filler which brings it down a notch.

I think if this would have been released in 1977 it would have been more into it, but a commercial pop-punk mid-nineties revival isn’t my thing, even though the songs are catchy enough and have sold millions, the opening guitar riffs grab your attention, and as a rule whenever one of their songs came on indie 88, it was recognizable and usually better than the one before it. The overall sound is too commercial for me & the lyrics are pretty bad - about boredom and anger and not enough humor. “Do you have the time to listen to me whine?” Not really.

Basket Case kann ich komplett mitsingenden und auch sonst viel Wiedererkennungswert. Hab mich auf dieses Album in gefreut, zu es auch beim Hören des mit viel Pop Appeal vorgetragenen Ami Punk Rock. Eine recht eindeutige 3, klare Sache dachte ich. Dennoch wäre dies nur Nostalgie. Die Songs kommen zwar knackig aber auch monoton durch die Boxen. OR: I am too old for this fun. Verjährte 2.4
War damals schon zu alt für die Platte; wahrgenommen aus so ner Perspektive von allgemeiner Sympathie, aber sonniger Westcoast Pop-Punk ist für Anfänger/Kids und ich inzwischen wieder ganz woanders. Heute gehört: und die Sympathie für sonnigen Westcoast Pop-Punk ist stärker als damals, außerdem beeindruckt von der Produktion. Wäre ich 1994 drei Jahre jünger gewesen oder in Love mit anderen (überhaupt welchen) coolen Girls, würde ich jetzt mit Sicherheit 4 Punkte geben, mindestens. So aber nur: autobiographie-biasde 3,4 (mit aber für Produktion, Pop und in dem Genre schon fast Perfektion abbildende nach oben zuckendem Finger, das sei notiert).
Disappointed that 'She' was nothing to do with either KISS or H Rider Haggard. All in all, somewhat monochrome, a few memorable tracks, a fair bit that was unremarkable but nothing unpleasant or irksome.
“Dookie” by Green Day (1994) Nice punk. Eloquent internal contradictions. Good vocal harmonies, matched in untrained tonal shallowness. Lyrically, of course, this album is an unedifying celebration of psychosexual disorder, descending into a scatological rage that disvalues all values. There is, however, an almost redemptive flash in “Sassafras Roots”, where the singer asks “May I waste your time too?”, seeking companionship in nihilistic misery. Uplifting. However, the musical composition, arrangement, and performance all contribute to a fitting synthesis and cohesion. While lead guitar is inelegant, the bass and drums are wonderful in their wild synchronization with the driving vocal melodies. It makes this album good to listen to. Nice touches of variety, in music that seems like it calls out for repetitive monotony. I really enjoyed “Basket Case”. It made feel like I was 16 years old again, looking forward to the distant future when at, say, age 22 I might be mature enough to produce this kind of art myself. On the cover, guest artist Curious George asks “Throw?” Sure, George, why not? 3/5

This is a simple album for more simplest times. I enjoyed almost every song here and feel like a young boy again.

First time listening to this since I was a teenager. Enjoyed it, but there’s no reason they shouldn’t have lopped off the first 4 tunes and just started with “Longview.” That song and “Basketcase” still completely work for me after all these years. They should’ve stopped twenty years ago. They could be gearing up for a hell of a reunion tour instead of doing whatever it is they are doing right now that no one gives a rat’s ass about.

This album is by no means perfect. I do wish there was more done with the instrumental sections on this album. Especially early on there are a couple songs that seem to be leading up to a big moment that never really comes. Chump is practically begging for a bass solo by the end (it is a great transition into Longview though). That being said when everything comes together on Dookie the album is untouchable. Longview, Welcome to Paradise and Basket Case are still absolute bangers ever after my 100th time hearing them. Pop-punk as we know it probably does not exist without those 3 songs. But like most home-run hitters this album strikes out quite a bit. The three tracks towards the end (that altogether are just barely over 5 minutes) really seem to just be here to pad out the run time. This album is still fun but do yourself a favor and after When I Come Around is over skip to F.O.D. Favorite Songs: Burnout, Longview, Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case, All By Myself
One of my all-time favorite albums. Could just be that it was one of my first CDs, but the energy throughout and the way it flows from one song to the next has always made it part of my rotation. Glad to see it on this list!
Great album. This was my first exposure to Green Day. This a great album full of hits. ("Longview", "welcome to paradise", "basket case"). Essential Green Day and a great album to start into them as well(even if you're just looking for some good punk rock, this is a great place to find it.

Enjoyable stuff that captures a youthful attitude really well. Like all the playing, especially bass and drums.
I imagine there are many who really like this album and have strong nostalgia for it, but I never got into Greenday when I was in middle/high-school so my touchpoints are from the pop-radio hits. I'd suppose Green Day are sort of punk-pop. Nothing bad, but it's all a bit surface-level for me. 3.5 to 3.

Ha it's like this app is taunting me and my dislike for Green Day. I enjoyed this one a lot more than American Idiot. Seems a lot more fresh/raw but still Pop punk which is a genre I don't enjoy too much.
Longview is a banger
The best Green Day album bar none. It’s filled with some overplayed classics and some underrated gems. This is the only one I listen to and it’s good when I don’t know what to put on. I think most people have heard the singles from this album but it goes deeper than that for me. Favorite song: She Least favorite song: All By Myself

Punk rock. Feels a lot like the rebellious emotions of the band are poured out as songs, which evidently resonate with a lot of people because the album is very popular. I did not resonate as much, and I did not enjoy it that much.
First time listening to early Green Day. Much better than I was expecting, given American Idiots melodrama. Solidly enjoyable punk.
I'm just not a big fan of Green Day. All the songs sound very similar to one another. And I feel like I've heard them all a million times
