Reviews (page 8 of 14)

Rubber Soul reveals itself as a quietly subversive record, one whose humor is inseparable from its craft. The album’s wit is not broad or careless; it emerges through carefully balanced arrangements and lyrics that glide between playfulness and menace. The buoyant “beep beep” harmonies of “Drive My Car” mask a sharp satire of ambition, while “Norwegian Wood” couches emotional ambiguity in such gentle textures that its closing act of arson lands almost casually, as if mischief were its natural conclusion. What distinguishes Rubber Soul is this tension between lightness and intent. Songs like “Girl” function as disguised experiments: its droning accompaniment and sighing vocals recall a medieval ballad, reframed through John Lennon’s ironic romanticism. Elsewhere, the album allows itself moments of genuine reflection. “In My Life” stands apart in its sincerity, its melodic restraint and baroque-tinged clavichord line lending the song a sense of temporal depth. Rubber Soul marks a decisive broadening of their creative vocabulary, integrating humor, introspection, and sonic experimentation into a coherent whole. For most bands, this level of invention would constitute a peak. For the Beatles, it was merely the threshold.

VAIME DZVLIVS NORMALURI ALBUMI MOVIDA

Very Beatlesy. Catchy, dynamic, unique, performed well, dense, funny stereo imagery. Very well written and arranged and so classic. Obviously it has the benefit of being a Beatles record, but it just has this aura that it has always been both classic and fresh. The usage of harmony is so good. Every song, even if comparatively lesser, is at least a solid foot-tapper. A lil bit funky, a lil bit bluesy, a lil barbershop, rock percussion, good tones, good vibes. Fun record. It's not the most complete album in their discography, I personally think there is a bit of a lull in the middle. It's bookended by runs of bangers and true classics, but there is a 4-5 song stretch where I would hope for a bit more. I also do really wish the remaster chose to center the vocals in the stereo image. I understand why they might have pushed the stereo tech back in the day, but if you're gonna remaster it anyway then why not actually remaster it. Pushing everything to mono the way it was really designed is definitely a better listening experience, but that's not how they give it to you anymore. Ultimately it is a very, very, very good album and easy to listen to. Absolutely necessary album. I'm putting it towards the top of my 4 range, not quite giving it 5 stars. 4.3/5

C'était super, j'écoutait bcp les Beatles à une certaine époque. Ça m'a fait plaisir d'écouter ça.

Great Album with one of my alltime favourite songs. But they will have even better records… Fav: Norwegian Wood

Really rich listening experience.

Will def listen to this one stoned

The Beatles. Timeless music that will last a very long time. Nothing but goodness through and through. A great album.

Would have been 5 stars but Run For Your Life is...problematic!

Some of their best tracks (Norwegian Wood) and the first great album from them

a few bangers (michelle, norwegian wood) but most sound too similar to each other

Look the beatles have great album covers, but this is not itttt. Love the hair cuts tho. BEEP BEEP YEAH Will never be a big beatles fan, but i have great respect for them tbh. Music slaps, just not my vibe ig. The writing is very smart and catchy omg slay. Guys "Michelle" is awesome Guys why does a little girl need to die lmao

its not too bad of an album i would listen to this on shrooms

One of my favourite Beatles albums

pretty good, not my kinda thing but I can rock with it, I can understand why a lot of people like this album which is why I am willing to give it a higher rating than I would otherwise, so here you go 7.5/10 maybe an 8 on a good day, but I suppose I might like it more with a few more listens

Was hoping for an unknown find for my first album, but you can’t go wrong with the Beattles! Mellow vibes and good for office listening.

One of the best Beatles albums and therefore one of the best albums full stop. The only possible criticism that I can level at it is that it’s a set of utterly sublime songs sandwiched between a good but pretty throwaway pop song and a really weird, is-it-ironic-who-is-the-joke-on oddity (Drive My Car and Run for Your Life)

Probably not the very best of the Beatles but In My Life is such a wonderful song I wouldn’t really say there’s any songs I don’t like in there but a lot of them just kinda exist

Its okay to leave your dog in a hot car (Yeah!) I do know this album very well (ofc) but there are a lot of songs that are still fantastic. In my Life is still probably the best beatles song or at least top 3. I like how you can start to hear the songwriting and sound branch out from their previous albums some songs are duds and are pretty lame but then you got norwegian wood and nowhere man so its all ok i do like how theyre playing around with sound and instrumentation and it gives each track more of its own identity and personality still think revolver is better

It took me over 24 hours to write this review because I quite literally didn't know what to write. I think when I was younger I would have automatically given this an instant rating of 5. I mean, it's Rubber Soul, right? By the Beatles!?! But honestly, it's just kinda underwhelming. They just weren't there yet. Revolver was a big step forward, and by Sgt. Peppers they had completely changed their sound. Rubber Soul, to me, still has too many problems of the early Beatles, and some of them sure haven't aged well. The music is pretty crisp. Catchy, pop-rocky, with a clean and punchy sound. The mono mix sounds good and the production is overall solid, but the lyrics go "baby you can drive my car beep beep yeah", "run for your life if I catch you with another man, little girl". What is going on? The endless harmonizing becomes grating after a while, however it does have a few standouts, most notable Norwegian Wood, In My Life, and I’m Looking Through You. The funny part is, even though I have so many issues with the album, it’s still one I would gladly come back to because it is just that good and I have a lot of nostalgia for it. This may be a "it's not you, it's me" scenario, but the I’d probably give it a 3.5/5.

🖤 i love the beatles

8.2/10

Had it in mind that this had slipped in reputation for me. Today’s listen though made me realise that I love this album but really don’t like Drive My Car and Michelle. I was also reminded today that Day Tripper and We Can Work It Out were nabbed for a double A-side from this album. If those replaced my the two I don’t like, this would be a stone cold classic. They hit a real sweet spot with the songwriting here, Paul may be responsible for the two I have a problem with, but elsewhere he is on fire. John delivers some masterpieces in The Word, Girl and In My Life and George is way ahead of time with If I Needed Someone which would be very at home on Revolver. So probably a 9/10 for me but I’ll save my 5 star votes for my absolute top Beatles of which there will be several.

Was great considering I hated the Beatles before. Favourite song was Wait.

Pretty good

cabrones, ta chido

obviously i adore the beatles but im unfortunately a michelle and drive my car hater… in my life and im looking through you and norwegian wood and nowhere man are such highs though it can’t be any lower

I’ve always respected The Beatles for their impact on pop music—and popular culture more broadly—but they’ve never fully connected with me on a personal level. Rubber Soul changed that. For the first time, I hear the band maturing in real time, moving beyond the frenzy of their early hits into something more cohesive and emotionally grounded. There’s a thread running through this album—warm, connected, and deliberately crafted—that feels like more than bubblegum pop. The songs explore mature relationships and grown-up emotions with a clarity and subtlety I didn’t associate with their earlier work. It’s also the first Beatles album where I can distinctly hear the personalities and contributions of each member, rather than just “the band” as a phenomenon. Whether it’s the familiar tunes (and there are plenty) or the ones that were new to me, Rubber Soul is a consistently strong, enjoyable listen.

Güzeldi sevdim.

Прікольна. Воно спокійне таке з приємним вайбіком. Під таку музику мало б бути весело їхати в далеку подорож на машині влітку

Sure, great album.

a great album that has one of my favorite beatles song!

Classis Beatles album. All the songs have this clear Beatles-like vibe I loved some songs, others I found boring.

Think I'm in agreement with many reviews I've seen that this marks the start of their run of really great albums but unlike others I feel that it's not quite top tier like Sgt Pepper, Abbey Road and Revolver. Still any album with songs like Norwegian Wood and In My Life can't be too bad. 4 out of 5

Good album. Hard to give the Beatles anything below a 4 star.

I don’t know the Beatles well, so listening was pretty new for me. It makes sense why their music is classic. I like their choices on the instrumentals as they all felt intentional and well thought. No significant highs for me on this record though.

A true must listen. So many classics.

Not a Beatles guy but this album was fun. “Norwegian Wood” has all the more meaning after reading Murakami’s novel of the same name. I enjoyed this one.

The Beatles quality reaches such heights. This album has some good tracks and some average (for them). A low 4/high 3 for me.

This is clearly a major turning point in The Beatles’ (and pop music’s) development. Despite this being their sixth album in three years, the number of ideas and quality of songwriting is only increasing and an edge has been gained. At this point you couldn’t swap their songs out for any other group without the complex and unique compositions losing something.

The Beatles are always good, which onr is your favourite is a matter of taste. This is not my favourite therefore 4/5

Nice, groovy 4/5

Relisten

My second favorite Beatles album behind Sgt. Pepper. Just a good, clean style of rock and roll.

Later Beatles are definitely what I prefer, and this is a bridge between the rock n roll of the early Beatles, and the psychedelia they would be dipping their toes into just one album later. Favorite tracks: "All My Life", "I'm Looking Through You", "Drive My Car” 4⭐️

4/5 really good Beatles album but still prefer later stuff. Very consistent and a nice vibe to it.

Miluju Beatles, hodně písniček jsem již znala. Neměla jsem ale pocit, že by album tvořilo celek a že by mi poslech alba dal něco víc než poslech jednotlivých písniček.

So far I like this one and Revolver the best.

"He's a real nowhere man Sitting in his nowhere land Making all his nowhere plans for nobody" The rise to true pop greatness truly begins here.

Has a couple of great songs. I need to relisten to this.

A solid beatles experience with some rarely heard tunes

Not really a fan of the Beatles but this is still a classic. Michelle was my fav.

Listened: at home making tea

I've already heard. I like this record and have it on vinyl

Whoa I'm almost 250 days in and this is my first Beatles album assigned on this project. Neat! Anyway, I'm a fan of most of the songs on this album, and a lot of them were already on other playlists. I do think this moves a bit away from the sound that I like from them and the quality of songs is wildly inconsistent.

Fav songs: Michelle, In my Life. Not really for me though.

Not my favourite Beatles album. Even setting aside “Run For Your Life” which may be the worst song John ever wrote, this album doesn’t have the energy of the early albums or the sophistication of the later albums. Though many people regard it as their triumph, to me this js the ugly middle child of the Beatles oeuvre.

Great listen! I get why it is a classic!

i liked this! not sure if i needed to hear it before i died - as it turned out, i liked one every other song. also, i am trying to study for my international development final, which may be dampening my mood - the work is so long

Da beatles

goated

Hemmer’s #1 Beatles album I think. I do like that this is the album where they start to emerge from the straightforward pop to asserting their own creativity, but before they got super drugged up and hating each other. Still, I’m not sure this makes my top 5 Beatles albums (I guess I prefer drugged up vs boring and there are too many throwaways on here) and I don’t think I want 6 5 star Beatles album reviews on my resume. As an aside, “In my life” came in a disappointing second place behind Green Day’s insufferable “Good Riddance (time of your life)” as my grad song despite a passionate campaign from myself and David

4.5 The transition album between bubble gum and acid

The problem with the movie "yesterday" was that it was supposed to be believable that in the modern day, amid a sea of modern music which was inspired by the Beatles + 60 years further development, that anyone would still be bowled over by the beatles' original tunes if they heard it for the first time today. Well, that was me today, and I had a lovely time but I wasn't necessarily bowled over. Of course, the Beatles DID actually do this first at a time when there was nothing like it, so kudos for that. I guess you had to be there

It’s the Beatles! Great album.

Very Beatles. Not as good as Sgt Pepper, White or Revolver, or even Abbey Road. Transitional. Quite mean spirited in places

I mean, its rubber soul! Need to dive deeper into the discog. I think there is greater in there...

Highly enjoyable, an absolutely classic, I just don’t love it.

Great album. Amazing what you can do in 35 minutes.

I like this album more than I thought I would. Always respected the Beatles, but reminded me too much of my parents music. How do "Im looking through you" , "What Goes On" & "Nowhere man" not have more spins? This is making me dig deeper into their catalogue. Finished this album and went straight to their first album, "Please Please Me". might be jumping the gun. I originally gave this a 3, but after 20 or so records on this app, I upped it to a 4.

The Beatles are always a welcome band to listen to. Great album overall, my favourite song was, “I’m looking through you”

Check this out: I actually liked this album haha. Their best album I've heard on this list. It started good and kind of lagged a bit in the middle but the last couple of songs were really fun. Good job Beatles you're not all mid

this is probably my favorite album of theirs it’s very awesome always

I love it and then Run For Your Life comes on….

All time classic. Lennon is on fire, and Michelle is one of McCartney’s best

Really fun and chill. Favorites: nowhere man, in my life

Перспективні хлопці, далеко підуть.

Great album, many great hits, a bit pop for me but easy to listen to

da beables

Great album. Earliest Beatles album I liked in it’s entirety.

Not their best, but still a good album

why are all the songs 2 minutes long..... it has 10 on pitchfork but it feels outdated.... and very pop for its time 80/100

Not their best, but a seminal step from girl-praising albums to music.

This is probably one of the most significant Beatles albums, as it's when they started experimenting a lot more with sounds and recording style. For example, the sitar in Norwegian Wood, the layered harmonies in the vocals, baroque style piano etc. The musical compositions are also a bit more complex in Rubber Soul than in their previous works. For instance, McCartney's bass lines, which were usally fairly basic and followed the same structure as the guitar. Now they're more melodic and move around the song more, either countering the melodies or playing in with the vocals. The bass is also much higher in the mix, allowing you to hear it more which give the songs a bit more funk. The album isn't anything new relative to the other rock bands around, there is stuff that is certainly unusual for the time in terms of style. But it's not revolutionary or groundbreaking like Revolver or Sgt. Pepper's, yet it's a clear turning point in the way The Beatles were working.

Only gets a 4 because Run For Your Life is a bit noncey. But I suppose it was the 60s so that was in fashion

Fantastic.

It was good, would like to hear from them

Nowhere man

My third Beatles album, with the third not coming long after the second, only 4 albums ago instead of it taking another 190 albums like it did with the first to the second. With Rubber Soul the four guys decide to turn the song-writing up a couple notches, alongside new guitar tones and new production techniques and just getting BETTER at being musicians. This is also when I think the experimenting started up, and the experimenting which would continue until the break-up. I have other thoughts that don't mesh with the paragraph above, so I will leave it here: -The chord progression in "Drive My Car" is lovely. -The song that stands out the most to me and is "Norwegian Wood" which never fails to make my head drift side to side, I just adore that so much, everything about it is so sweet. -The interlude in "In My Life" is really nice. -"Run For Your Life" has Lennon make a song, that sounds like something off of Please Please Me or With The Beatles.

For me there is no really bad Beatles Album

Very solid album! Has some classic Beatles songs on it!

Classic

Very good, I think Girl is my favorite from this one.

The Beatles

One of their best albums

I enjoyed the music on the album so I don’t have any major complaints. It didn’t grab me like I was expecting a Beatles album to do so I can’t give it a five. It was just a tad bit underwhelming!

Solid bangers on this one. "You Won't See Me," "Nowhere Man," "In My Life," and "Wait" are stand outs. "Run for Your Life" is a fun and potentially violent song to end on. Not my go-to for Beatles, but still great.

Rubber Soul is an interesting document of a band transitioning from its roots in propulsive, hooky pop songs anchored in the blues to the more complex and sophisticated fare that would define their latter years. “If I Needed Someone” is a great song, a template for hundreds of Rickenbacker-wielding power pop bands to follow. I dock a star because of the creeper lyrics to “Run For Your Life.”

That happy medium between garage band moptops and psychedelic indulgence.

I dunno what's to say about the Beatles anymore. Of course they are the list. This list likely wouldn't be here to begin with if the Beatles hadn't come along.

I mean, its the beatles. Good album Not as good as some of their later works but still great A bunch of classics on here

This album *almost* has a strong claim at being the Beatles’ best. It marks the start of their untouchable run of boundary-pushing releases in the second half of the 60s, and is just a consistently enjoyable and interesting set of songs. In My Life, Norwegian Wood, Girl, I’m Looking Through You, Michelle, If I Needed Someone - all standouts. Maybe only the first of those is an all-timer, though, and there *are* a couple of less than stellar tracks on here (What Goes On, Run For Your Life)... plus, I’ve given top marks to 3 Beatles albums already and something doesn’t feel quite right about making this the fourth. 4.5

Never listens to this album before, but I liked it

their most underrated album imo, some absolutely beautiful songs here. in my life especially is just so good

Surprisingly this is the first Beatles album after almost 1/4 of this challenge. What are the odds of that? Usually i dock points for a sexualizing “little girl” in the lyrics, but in Run For Your Life its pretty clear the narrator is a Bad Dude. Pretty funny that people think its about John Lennon, at least he was self aware that he was a piece of shit

Another belter from the Beatles. Perhaps not quite as good as Revolver but still a great album

Every song is great, an album one can listen to over and over!

Strong 3,5

It was better than abbey road in my opinion.

Gets a bit samey but mostly banger after banger

rubber soul? i hardly know her

A bit formulaic and "basic pop" era Beatles but there's some undeniable all-timers in here, Michelle is a top 5 Beatles track

Definitely not my fav Beatles but it's growing on me, so many great tracks! Not as many stand-outs to me atm but it was such easy listening and you can hear the more layered and complex instrumentation showing itself here. I'm loving any chance to listen to some Beatles on this list!

FUUUUUCK Jag älskar beatles, jag älskar vissa låtar på det här albumet hngngngn jag måste lämna rum åt andra album. Det är liksom inte peak beatles än, DE GÅR BARA UPPÅT

I really love Norwegian Wood and In My Life. Girl is also a pretty song. I never really liked Nowhere Man. The rest of the album is decent. I referenced Michelle yesterday, so I'm amused I got this album today.

This album may be marked as the watershed in The Beatles sound into more psychedelic territory, but it doesn't have the weird sounds and ideas of the following projects, In fact, I find it to be quite stale in terms of ideas. However, the incredibly clean production, the superb singing and the general catchiness of the entire record is enough to make a very enjoyable experience.

average beatles album

I knew almost half of the songs on Rubber Soul pretty well before I listened to this today, I was looking forward to listening to the entire album and fully expected to give it a 5 star review. However, maybe because The Beatles have set such a high bar, it didn't quite meet my expectations. Sure, songs like Norwegian Wood and In My Life are beautifully crafted and were a different style to previous Beatles songs. They showed their willingness to use a growing range of instruments to develop a more expensive sound, and some of the songs that were new to me, especially You Won't See Me and If I Needed Someone, are really good songs that I'm surprised I haven't heard before. However, the country style Ringo Starr fronted What Goes On falls flat for me, and the lyrics of Run For Your Life are unnecessarily dark and end the album on a sour note. Still, 4 stars is good. The fact I was expecting better shows how brilliant The Beatles were.

This is on the lower end of the spectrum for my personal Beatles album list....too many weak points to give it a 5.

Listening to this record, I’m realizing I’ve never fully come to terms with The Beatles. Their early hits are catchy and classic. The White Album is obviously an important and immovable entry in music history. In My Life is one of my favorite songs. And I’ve long considered Sgt. Pepper’s one of the best albums ever made. But if I’m being honest with myself, I’ve never really taken a step back and considered the band as a whole. And I’ve never done an honest-to-goodness deep-dive into their catalog. I’ve never really taken the time to decide how I feel about them. Part of that is my annoying habit of being an insufferable contrarian. The fact that they’re so widely considered to be one of the “best” bands ever is probably precisely the reason I’ve always kept them at arm’s length. But here, with Rubber Soul, I’m going to start my deeper analysis of the band. And my deep analysis of this album is…it’s pretty good (deep, I know). I’ll keep this one in the back of my mind as I listen to the rest of the catalog so I can evaluate it in context of the band’s progression. 4/5 Highlights: Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) Girl I’m Looking Through You In My Life

Que dire de plus ? C’est peut être pas le meilleur album des Beatles mais on y retrouve la l’ADN de ce qu’est les Beatles, avec en guise de cerise sur le gâteau quelque touches d’expérimentale

8/1001 I grew up on the capital records version of this album so I still miss the false start on I’m looking through you. All the History and hype aside. A fun and peppy collection of little jingles and a casual death threat you can sing along to. What’s not to love here? I’ll take all ya got.

Classic

7/10 This is where the Beatles start really finding their sound. A few classics and nothing sounds corny. 10-17-2025

Wanted to give this a 5 so bad, but that last song man.

I'm gonna revise this as I listened again. It's one of my favorite Beatles albums, but I think the songs I like are propping up some crappier songs.

The songs demonstrate the Beatles' increasing maturity as lyricists, and in their incorporation of brighter guitar tones and new instrumentation such as sitar, harmonium and fuzz bass, the group striving for more expressive sounds and arrangements for their music.

This was going well till I got to the last track which hasn't told the test of time. An anthem to coercive control. Still great music.

This album definitely marks a turning point for The Beatles, moving from a pop band to something more mature and experimental. It’s not full-blown psychedelic yet, but you can tell that’s where they were headed. One track that really stands out is “Norwegian Wood,” which uses sitar and gives the song an Indian classical sound. That track alone probably played a big role in inspiring the whole raga rock movement that came after.

This isn't my favourite Beatles album, but it feels like a major turning point in their discography, so I totally get why it would be included in the book. There's a bit more experimentation with different instruments, recording techniques, and song structures that hints at the direction they start heading following this album. Interesting that this is the first album they recorded without concert, radio, or film commitments.

Preferred it to abbey road. In my life is fucking beaut.

Older Beatles best Beatles

Not my favorite Beatles album, but the first time I dropped, Nowhere Man and Norwegian Wood came along for the journey.

This kind of ruled? I have this vinyl but I’ve never listened to the whole thing because, what, am I going to lay on my shag rug and eat mushrooms and put this on and write in my journal ”tonight I’m diving into The Beatles.” Yes, yes I did do that and then got embarrassed and put on Erykah Badu instead. Some very good songs on here and In My Life is really just very nice to listen to. The Drive My Car opening while driving could be a peak experience

Best Track - "Norwegian Wood"

Rubber Soul My wife went on a trip to Amsterdam once and listened to Rubber Soul while on hallucinogenics. Her recollection is that the carpet melted and that the Beatles sailed across in tiny vessels of tears, while Michelle - in all its creepy coyness - expanded to fill several hours. As much as I enjoy Rubber Soul, I know that it is the Beatles first psychedelic record and that my wife’s description of Amsterdam is how Rubber Soul should be experienced. I am too scared to try that, of course. Still, it makes you listen to the album differently and with a certain trepidation. Run For Your Life is a horrific sentiment delivered with psychopathic banality. Imagine that looping forever. Or the sickening tooth sucking sound that imagines itself a hook in Girl. The bare sentiment of In My Life would become painful. The painful sentiment of Nowhere Man would become unbearable. What were the Beatles playing at getting into drugs! For me, the album is always tainted now. To be handled carefullly with gloves. The less thrilling songs, like Wait, What Goes On, You Won’t See Me, are to be studiously ignored. Drive My Car, The Word to be taken in moderation. 14 seconds of sitar on Norwegian Wood is often enough. 4 Rubber Soul - The Beatles Rubber Soul is very good. If you were looking for flaws - The Word is a bit naff, What Goes On is forgettable, and Run for your Life is dull and one of the worst Beatles album closers. And you are looking for flaws of course, because you think about the Beatles so much that ‘which is the best Beatles album?’ has become the sine qua non of all music criticism. By ‘you’ I mean me, so there is also the problem of Nowhere Man. A teacher in St Mary’s - I forget which, I wasn’t in his classes, he was old and an idiot if that narrows it down at all - took a group of us into the chapel and gave us a short, inspirational speech about our impending career choices. The bottom line was that we should be ‘leaders’ and not ‘gophers’ if possible (these were roughly the two types of man in the world) and then he stood glaring at us with his arms folded while Nowhere Man played at us from a little boombox. Don’t be Nowhere Men lads. Have a plan and ambition and all that. I was sure then, as now, that this was not John Lennon’s message but I can’t shake the association. The song starts and something in me twists in disgust. Great song all the same. I understand the temptation to favour this above all other Beatles albums. It is right in the middle and they all still have the same haircut on the cover and are clean-shaven. It is easy to romanticise this as the last glimpse of the band’s solidarity as a commercial and artistic unit before a long, glorious dissolution into their disparate personalities, diverging musical interests and radically different-looking heads. In truth McCartney had already, on the previous album, written and recorded a song without any of the other Beatles (Yesterday). There are still enough musical and studio experiments on Rubber Soul that it anticipates the second half of their career even as it embodies, more perfectly than any of the albums before, their genius in crafting commercial pop music. No discomfort with perceived artistic pretentiousness will be felt listening to Rubber Soul. It’s almost a diplomatic choice as a favourite Beatles album - ‘Early Beatles v Late Beatles? I like all of it. Everyone is right. Rubber Soul. The Best of the Beatles.’ Fuck that. Music is a competition, even when there is only one band. Well it’s very good. There are so many brilliant songs here it feels silly to give this a mere 4, but that’s what it’s getting from me. There are better albums than this. Mostly by The Beatles. 4/5

Walking in the woods listening to Rubber Soul and carrying my nightguard in my pocket. No matter how relaxing a nap down by the lake sounds, the threat of teeth grinding never leaves. My mouth guard is my tether to reality

How am I supposed to not like this?

Beatles on its most

4.5 - Don't have to say much about this album that hasn't been said yet. It's the turning point for The Beatles. From this album and onwards they are on a totally different level. There are a few songs that prevent me from giving it a 5.

nice, love

I love this album, I was singing every word and I’ll listen again at work. Such good vibes throughout (mostly) and each song could be a single on their own. This had to be a pop giant at the time and started the album era. And I’ve always loved the “Rubber Soul” title, comedically acknowledging the elephant in the room and moving forward with their own sound. While the album is huge and sort of started their legendary run, I can’t give it a 5 because then what are Sgt Peppers, The White Album, Abbey Road? 7s? I feel their music continued to evolve on later albums.

Wow! Talk about radio-ready: 14 songs in 35 minutes. Good, though. Some great songs. Here we hear the musical maturation of the band beginning (no covers on this one) - on Revolver, they begin to mature intellectually.

Pretty solid overall album from the Beatles. Still has some of their early 60’s feel, but it’s mixed with a slightly changing direction as they move to the mid to late 60’s sound and experimentation. Feels transitional. Favorites tracks include Drive My Car, Norwegian Wood, Nowhere Man, Michelle, In My Life, Wait.

Yet another showcase of the Fab Four's songwriting genius! This one's from before they really started experimenting, just transitioning out of their earlier Merseybeat works into their weirder sound, and the result is a collection of some great great songs, even without any hits.

I love this album. I think it's one step down from their truly great stuff, but seeing the blueprint for what was to come is amazing. Their songwriting is more mature, the instrumentation is complex, and it stands the test of time. While I feel like their more psychedelic stuff sounds firmly dated to the late 60s, Rubber Soul still feels fresh to me despite not having any hits.

Classic. took me back to my youth.

One of my favorite Beatles Albums. They started to evolve pst straight 'pop' music in a new and interesting way for the period.

The beginning of the Beatles’ best.

Pleasantly surprised by quite a few tracks on this album. Possibly the first time I've EVER listened to a Beatles album start to finish. Very cool vibes!

Hadn’t previously thought of this album as one of my favorite Beatles albums but it has some classics. The songs seem almost effortless for them and help make the case why many consider them one of the best bands.

I liked it. The songs are silly but melodies are great. Drive My Car and The Word were probably my favorites. 14 songs and 35 minutes is pretty sick too. Good album. 4 stars.

Hard to judge objectively since I know every word having heard this album constantly growing up. I'll keep it at a 4 since it's sort of the transitional album just before they started really breaking new ground. Songwriting is top notch, no duds on the album, catchy ear worms that have you humming them the rest of the day.

None of these songs would be in my personal top 14 for the Beatles, but it might be their best album start-to-finish? Though it's a weird choice to end with a jaunty tune about murdering your girlfriend.

I really enjoyed this entire album. When I was younger, I didn't like The Beatles because I thought they were lame old people music, but as I've grown, so has my taste. I can say now that The Beatles is one of my favorite bands from the 60s

I mean what is there to say about the Beatles that hasn't been said? Downgraded for the horror of Run for Your Life.

Beatles getting all sophisticated. It’s a turning point album. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - Drive My Car - Norwegian Wood - Nowhere Man - In My Life

Todella hyvä levy. 4.25/5.

Don’t kill me, but this is their first great album. It was their first full venture into something deeper and more groundbreaking. While it retains some of the older, less mature Beatles mannerisms (lyrically on certain tracks, mostly), it marked the first point the Beatles truly became sonic visionaries. Seminal.

BABY YOU CAN DRIVE MY CAR

An album between pop and psychedelia

I went into the album pretty sure of a 5, but in this listen the theme of misogyny that runs through many songs (ending with the cringy Run for your Life) is tough. There are tender moments as well and the songwriting is now fully formed. An important album, but not quite a 5--might actually be a 3.5 for me now.

Pretty cool but not my favorite beatles

#123/1001. Browsing to find rhe original instead of the remastered version, I noticed I could have picked also Rubber Soul by "the Beatles complete version on Ukulele", the Doraemons' super sleazy lounge version complete with ooh-aah choirs and a whirling wurlitzer, a more recent tribute from a band called Rubber Soul, techno / experimental electronica version (which only seems to borrow the album and the song names) from Ruslan Barysiuk, a jazz version or a few acoustic / unplugged / strings versions (although in some of these songs were a bit here from there or not at least in the typical order). Actually as I was sampling these I thought I had struck on a country band version at What Goes On 😅. Also noticed that the original U.K. pressing seems to have a different song order from some later prints e.g. in the US. Nevertheless, any band's status as a legend is proportonional to the amount of cover bands and cover songs out there. I probably could comple most of the Beatles albums from Finnish cover versions, (in Finland we have been making bad and not so bad cover versions for a long long time, after the 80s it slowly - but not completely -faded away, a tradition, which we are proud/ashamed about (pick your preference)). So I decided not really talk too much about this album, you all know it right? I never actually owned this album so besides the hits and the other will known songs there are some tunes here which haven't worn out (if Beatles' songs can wear out). For me the next albums are much more important and interesting. This seems to dominate the 1001 list currently as the top album btw.

It's the Beatles, ok?!

Good stuff.

Full of personal echoes, past heartbreaks and previously unheard delights. Even though Girl is my favourite on this album, George will always be my favourite Beatle.

Honestly, changes the trajectory of Rock and Roll from here on out. Supremely simple sounding melodies that feature interesting instrumentation, layered a-capella, and captivating lyrics. I do not like the Beatles, but I do think Rubber Soul is one of those albums that would help rock and roll break out of its Buddy Holly or Garage Rock tones and move into the more experimental genre we see in the coming years.

Very good

Solid album, loved the car one.

Not my favorite Beatles album, but not my least favorite either. It’s right at the point where they get more interesting musically as opposed to the early 60s love song stuff. Highlight: Norwegian Wood Lowlight: Run for Your Life (possibly my least fav of their songs?)

The first properly good Beatles album. It’s still quite lightweight pop, but Lennon and McCartney are clearly showing a growing maturity in the songwriting, and there are a some really good tunes here. Not their best by a long way, but still a really good album. The Ringo song is a bit shit, of course.

Banger

I hadn’t dwelled much on this album in the past but this spin reminded me just how great a song In My Life is. What a beautifully nostalgic little guitar riff.

++*: In My Life ++: Drive My Car, Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown), You Won't See Me, Nowhere Man, Think for Yourself, Michelle, What Goes On, Girl, I'm Looking Through You, Wait, If I Needed Someone +: The Word +-: Run for Your Life 9,4/10

This album, at least to me, begins their journey out of the "g-golly, aw shucks" wholesome, innocent Beatles of their previous albums. It still has some, but you can tell it's a stepping stone toward Revolver. There are some of my favorite Beatles songs on here: Norwegian Wood, Think for Yourself, and Michelle. Most songs are under 3 minutes, like previous albums. Short, to the point. Good music, great harmonies. Not their best album, so maybe a 4 from me.

A soulful album indeed. Some great classics on here. But damn Run For Your Life is kinda harsh.

I mean even the throwaway tracks aren’t terrible enough to throw away.

On this album the Beatles don't make any quantum leaps forward but they do continue to refine and expand their songwriting and sound. A third of the tracks are excellent/iconic and the rest range from great to merely good. In addition, the clean and uncluttered production on this record keeps it sounding as fresh as the day it was released.

Rubber Soul has been a favourite of mine for a long time. However, I think some of its charm has worn off on me. I remember when my family first got a microwave oven. It changed everything, but now it seems like standard issue. Perhaps Rubber Soul is a bit like that: revolutionary but so inseparable from our daily lives we fail to notice its miracle.

Standout Songs: Drive My Car You Won't See Me Think For Yourself The Word What Goes On In My Life Wait

A lot of debut albums will have a debut stench on them. Maybe they make good music, but they don't know how to construct it into an album. A lot of it has to do with little decisions that don't seem significant at first, but can turn a good album into a classic. Even though this is not The Beatles debut album, that's the case here. This is their first take at being experimental. They had gotten very comfortable in their boy band pop albums. Churning out very decent, but ultimately unsubstantial songs and slapping them on to the album with no other thoughts. The arrangement of songs on this album don't really make any sense. Why not close with "In My Life"? Why open with "Drive My Car"? Why include a song like, "Run for Your Life"? Why not expand on the more interesting and experimental aspects of some of these songs? I love "Rubber Soul" and I believe it to be incredibly important to their story, but even though it's very exciting to see the boys doing something new, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's great. It's good, very good, but not great. I do know the words to every song on this album. Don't get it twisted, I love these British twats. 4/5

This is one of the best Beatles albums - absolute classic. Pitchfork: 10.0 Rolling Stone: Top 500 Albums #35 Best Songs Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) Nowhere Man Michelle Girl In My Life

Possibly my favourite Beatles album

Some great songs, it's crazy just how prolific the Beatles were. These are the songs of my childhood, driving with my parents while they listened to the oldies station on the radio; they'll never fail to make me feel something. Run For Your Life is pretty fucked up though.

First Beatles album to pop up! Not my favorite but lots of great songs all the same.

(4.5) very nostalgic i love it

About as far as I go back in the catalogue. Where it starts to get interesting.

Not exactly my normal vibe but it had a bop to it. "Drive My Car" , "Nowhere Man", "The Word", "Michelle", "In My Life", "Wait", and "Run" were very good. The album had an Austin Powers meets Roy Orbison sound to it. Like I said not my normal listening preference. More of a 70 soul, Blues, 80s Pop, Rock, 80s Chicago House, Hip-Hop, New Soul listener.

First full Beatles album!

Listened to this while playing Voidfall. It's a long game...no clue if I won or lost...probably lost though. Classic Beatles. Lots of gems.

Don’t crucify me but this may be my first time fully listening to any Beatles song / album idk how. Did enjoy

I can’t stand girl but the rest is pretty good song writing and not that annoying. i think this is the first beatles album i’ve actually listened to.

Some absolutely amazing songs with your overall a great pop album

nice sound

A great album from goated artists. 8.4/10

I sometimes find them repetitive, but I usually like them.

Interesting. Early enough in their career to still have some references to their pop love songs, and while sounding much more mature and experimental, they're not quite in full psychedelic mode yet. Good stuff. As with all Beatles albums, certain songs have been overplayed through the years, but for the most part I enjoyed the whole album.

If you were to Drive My Car, you would be hearing this album on.

I love this album, but I wish it ended with a different song. Favorite tracks: drive my car, think for yourself, girl, i’m looking through you, in my life

What's not to like. Save for other Beatles entries on this list most if not all of their other material will be almost perfectly rated.

In my collection. A lesser known album by me, because my dad didn't had this record. But I can clearly hear the transition from rock'n'roll to more crafted songs. Also the use of non traditional instruments, foreshadow what will come. My personal favorites are "Girl" (so damn sweet) and Norwegian Wood. 4/5

The Beatles if they were... wait, they are The Beatles, nevermind.

Not my favorite Beatles album, but it has some bangers

Not their best so only 4 stars

Not a Beatles guy, me. But if I have to pick one album, it's Rubber Soul. Between the attempt-at-objectivity rating and the do-i-dig-it rating, it nets out at 4 starts.

Although not my favorite album of theirs, it does posseess the basic music qualities I like. Music that I can tap my foot to and words I can understand and sing. After listening, the tunes will play in my head for some time, which is a good thing. Obviously, these songs bring memories, gooed and bad , with it. 4+

Pas grand chose à dire, l'album parle de lui même

Yeah good music just doesn't fit my vibe sorry Beatles

I must confess, i'm not in the cult of this record. I like this record a lot, but it's not myyyy Beatles record. It's not even in my top 5. It's still a great record though. Even a middle of the pack Beatles record is better than most of the records we've reviewed so far. I get the significance of this album. It's one of the transition albums that moves the band from their early pop rock years to their experimental, psychedelic era. But it's not even my favourite transition record. That would be Revolver. In general, I prefer the back half of their catalogue, and Rubber Soul is arguably the end of the first half. It's definitely more experimental than every album that came before it, which I dig. It's got great pop hooks, a good amount of variety, and lots of acoustic instrumentation (i'm a sucker for acoustic songs). It's wild how these songs do so much with such little run time. Almost every track is under 3 minutes, but feels so full and memorable. I know the words to every song (even the ones i'm not that into). It's a great record. The Rubber Soul evangelists may think I'm a hater, but it's a great record... i swear. Please don't come after me. Fun fact: there are at least 3 books written about this album. So I feel like everything I'm going to say about this record has already been written. And I don't have a strong personal connection to this album to fill my review with personal anecdotes. Song thoughts.... Drive My Car - just a fun, groovy rock song. Love that cowbell and that piano line in the chorus. Norwegian Wood - the Lennon song about cheating on his wife that's written like a riddle so she couldn't figure it out he was confessing... and if i'm not mistaken it's the first time the band incorporated indian influences (the citar). It's a classic. Nowhere Man - It's solid. Inspired that okay Lennon bio pic, Nowhere Boy. Fun fact the 40 something year old director of that movie is now married to the teen who was played John Lennon in the movie. Gross. Think For Yourself - i like that fuzzy guitar line that buzzes in the background. The Word - I kinda... don't like this one. Musically, it's cool. But the "the word is love" dips into that cheesy hippy peace and love shit in a way that doesn't work for me. And the chorus is kind of annoying after awhile. Michelle - It's good... a little overrated? But it's good. I think people misunderstand it and think it's very heartfelt and romantic. To me it sounds like Paul is trying to seduce a french girl who doesn't know any english. Since he knows she doesn't understand the language, he just fills up the song with nonsense lyrics like "these are words that go together well" hoping she'll fall for it and be with him. I hope my interpretation is right... i prefer it being sorta insincere/cynical. What Goes On - underrated song. There are a few of these in the Beatles catalogue, a country number where they let Ringo sing. They're always a good time. Super fun track. Girl - This is another one that's a bit of a mixed back. I love most of that song but the do do do section about how the girl is cool... that bit always rubs me the wrong way. I cringe at that line "When you say she's looking good, She acts as if it's understood she's cool". Ugh. I'm Looking Through You - one of my favourite Beatles deep cuts. Just a beautiful acoustic song. The vocal melody is incredible. And then when that electric lead hits, iconic. I love how abrasive it is in comparison to the rest of the track. That mash up of acoustic and electric is chefs kiss. In My Life - Just a beautiful song about looking back and reflecting on moments in your life. I imagine this song will mean even more to me when i'm an old man. I love the piano solo. It has a cool classical vibe. If I Needed Someone - I love those big harmonies. The vocals feel so huge on this. Run For Your Life - This might be the most toxic Beatles song of all time... but it also kinda rocks musically. It's just not a good look for John threatening to kill his girlfriend if she ever cheats on him. Also... referring to this adult woman as "little girl" just makes it all worse. It is kind of funny that in one of the verses he doubles down and says "Let this be a sermon, I mean everything I've said, Baby, I'm determined, And I'd rather see you dead." Just so if the listener was thinking "nah, he's just being metaphorical"... he's made it clear that he is in fact a jealous asshole and he will kill her. Way to go John.

Clearly top 3 fav Beatles album. Hits, ballads, start of their experimental work. The bass work is really great here, good job Paul ! Just, "Run for you life" is a creepy song. 8,5/10 fav songs : Norwegian Wood & Girl & In My Life

Really enjoyable to listen to. Not just the hits but a broad offering.

Classic.

The range and depth of the Beatles' musical catalog is truly amazing.

Rating vs other music is probably a 5 but for the Beatles a 4 for me.

he’s a real nowhere man fr

there’s nothing for me to say about this album that hasn’t already been said highlights: Drive My Car

Good album, pretty short and not repetitive. Good song lengths and overall fun instrumentals and vibe

pior que esse eh QUASE impecável mas eu odeio muito "the word". hippie demais pra mim. no mais, delicinha. os cara começano a fica MALUCO. e in my life é das maiores canções do mundo tbm bonito demais

Fun listen

Not as good as what came after though still a total classic. Almost no skips but that "Run For Your Life" song is really creepy and feels out of place. Favorite track: In My Life

In my opinion the Beatles are best when they are experimenting and trying new ideas (which happened shortly after this album in their discography). Rubber Soul is a fine listen but might stick to the classic 50s and early 60s pop formula too much. 7/10

It’s hard to give this a 4… but this is bottom of their discography for me. Despite its importance and being called the Beatles turning point… I’m not a music critic just a basic bitch who lives some good bubblegum pop. But also appreciates some experimental folk rock. So 4 it is.

Of course it's good music, it's the Beatles. But will I listen to it again? Probably not.

Pretty solid like most Beatles albums. Had a consistent sound but enough variety not to be bored. I would say there are to not enough stand out tracks to be a five star album, but a few did get my foot tapping.

The Beatles start doing drugs and become a way more interesting band. Norwegian Wood is the take-off point. But there's more to this than that. I listened to the non-North American version first, a pretty big difference since they basically changed three tracks on such an album that runs a little more than half an hour. Although I like Drive my Car as a catchy pop track, "I've Just Seen a Face" on the North American release is a better track. On the European release, What Goes on is a bit of a dumb jangle. It's Only Love on the North American is much better. The only real loss on the North American version is If I needed Someone, which is a great track. Otherwise, the North American version is better. So Not being a massive Beatles fan, there are some sleeper tracks I wasn't familiar with on both versions, but really liked Think for Yourself, Girl, and Michelle. Overall, it's a very good album, but perhaps not as baroque in the acid rock as Revolver afterwards. 4/5

It’s got great harmonies and melodies. A classic for sure. I prefer my Beatles with a little more drugs in their system though.

Interesting A couple of GREAT tracks. Good overall but is it blasphemy to say it sounds like a bit of a "now let's do an Indian song, ooh, now a french sounding one. Ringo, fancy a go at country?" Looking into it, it's considered a classic and a pivot between a pop sound and experimental. Norwegian Wood. Amazing.

Lots of recognisable good songs but with all Beatles albums there are duds. I think most Beatles albums on this list will be getting the same score of 4 for this reason. Stand out song - I'm looking through you

I'm not a masive Beatles fan but think this is one of the first of the good albums. A couple of more maturing tracks make this bettwr than earlier ones in my humble opinion.

Such a joyful album. What can I say about it , it’s the Beatles! Great instrumentation, interesting storytelling, good harmonies that stick with you. Something I’ll keep on listening.

Overall I enjoyed this album

NEARLY perfect. Listening again, it's jarring how disturbing "Run For Your Life" was/is. For that and the ridiculous inhale during the "Girl" chorus, I'm docking a star.

Classic! Not as expansive or experimental as a few other of their albums, but perfectly wonderful & definitely marks the start of the best, both musically and lyrically. Strange closer, though. Thematically. Faves: Girl, Norwegian Wood, & Michelle. Folk Rock. December 3, 1965. British/English. 14 tracks. 34:59 runtime.

Awesome. Lots of great tracks for an album I don’t always consider when I’m in the mood for some Beatles.

Great album but not my favorite beatles

th eb eatles

You wont see me Drive my car Nowhere man Norwegian wood Think for yourself The word

One point off for Run for Your Life because that song is trash.

My first time listening to a full Beatles album and I absolutely loved it!

one of the best albums from the beatles

The thing is, like a lot of people, you’ve heard pretty much every Beatles track there is, but just have no idea what album each one is on. So it’s been interesting to listen to Rubber Soul and wonder what might be coming next. There’s some great stuff that I’ve not heard for years … Think For Yourself, Girl, Wait, The Word (which became an earworm for a few hours). There’s utter classics like In My Life, Michelle, Drive My Car and Norwegian Wood. And there’s an obligatory crap ‘Ringo’ track; What Goes On. (If I Needed Someone is weak too).

In order not to be a total hypocrite I need to acknowledge the lyrics on Run For Your Life, having been scathing about similar sentiments on some gangster rap and country albums. You naughty boys. It’s a great tune though; such a shame.

 Overall not quite a 5.

I don't listen to a ton of Beatles so take this with a grain of salt. This feels like a very clean, straightforward album with just pure musical talent opposed to their later stuff that has a lot more post effects to amp up the psychedelia. I really enjoyed this, but because I didn't grow up on The Beatles, I don't think I quite understand Beatlemania. I will always love the opening riff to In My Life. Not a single thing wrong with album, but nothing that particularly wowed me besides it's consistency in production.

I used to be such a phony about 15 years ago because I owned a Rubber Soul shirt, but this is my very first time listening to it all the way through. Glad I am no longer a phony. Drive my Car was such a funky song to start with an I thought we were going to get a Beatles funk album which would have ruled. Turned into a regular Beatles 60s rock album though. Definitely nothing wrong with that because it was still good, just was hoping for something different. Lower 4.

Oh yeah, heard this many times

Classic for a reason. Full disclosure, I listened to the original US release as it's the vinyl copy I own. The Beatles pop sensibilities defined their era and are still fantastic to this day. Favorites are I've Just Seen A Face, Norwegian Wood, I'm Looking Through You m, and In My Life.

Essential

Klasika album

This would have been even better if the band had included Day Tripper and especially We Can Work It Out, but those were on a single released the same day as the album. Still, it was the midpoint between the more commercial early albums and their later, psychedelic and progressive work.

I'm curious

Another great Beatles album. It’s hard to imagine rating this less than 4/5 stars. It’s packed with so many catchy short tunes. Stand out tracks are In My Life and Norwegian Wood.

This album is a classic. The Beatles can’t miss.

Full of hits

Me encanta.

3.8 Enjoy Norwegian Wood (a quaint song about burning down a girl's home after she doesn't sleep with you), Drive my car (a bob about a girl being lucky enough to even get to drive your car), Michelle, etc. Fun album, fun to imagine it coming out when it did

Good album, overall very strong collection

Beatles = chameleon

Interesting songs, and some are among my favorites. They managed to explore the different genres that influence rock.

very important album with some songs that are so important for everyone to have heard a few of them don’t live up to the greatness of some of the other tracks meaning as a whole album as good as it is it isn’t 5/5, more of a 3.5-4/5

3.5* 84%

I’m not a Beatles fan, I don’t dislike The Beatles, I just don’t seek them out. Rubber Soul along with Revolver are the only two Beatles albums I’ve listened to that don’t have a track that annoys me. Then they came out with Sgt. Pepper’s and let Fixing a Hole and When I’m Sixty Four make the cut. Even the biggest Beatles fans have to admit these guys can be super annoying, I’ll give George Harrison a pass, he’s the coolest of the bunch and I got no qualms with him. I’m back to the album, they made it interesting, they opened with what Drive My Car, and this song could easily be written off as a lame song but the Beatles are so good harmonies and the guitar riff is so clean and the beep-beep’m beep-beep’m yeah won me over. Norwegian Wood, may be one of their favourite tracks of mine. George on the Sitar which works super well on this song about John being a sleazebag. The whole album is simply a really easy listen, great vocals and great music. A really nice light album. 4 stars

I really love how through this album listening experience I’ve been able to now actually go through and listen to all these old Beatles records and fully appreciate their greatness. And Rubber Soul is just another one of these greats. I really like the Beatles sound in this album. Not to mention phenomenal album cover art as well, one of my favorites. Not quite on the same level though overall as the other three Beatles we’ve had so far but great nonetheless.

A Great album that shows the beginning of their progression into more psychedelic territory. I was never a great Beatlea fan, liked a song here and there but never actually sat down and listened to any of their albums from A to Z until this one. The folkish vibe on those songs is very enjoyable an well produced. Great listening experience even if it's not their best album. Overall would listen to it again with pleasure.

Very well made album. Some absolutely beautiful songs. You can tell they were just stepping out of the convention they were setting.

I had to look up The Beatles' discography to see where this sits. It seems to be at the cusp between the Beatles my mom likes and The Beatles my dad likes. It's a little less girls screaming in arenas and little more take drugs and act like our music means something. Pretty good for the first step out of Hard Day's Night.

Already listened ❤️ A great Beatles album

It’s the Beatles. In my life almost gets it a 5

ok i see why everyone loves the beatles

Drive my car, Michelle, In My Life, Nowhere Man ... classics. Very 60s but in a good way. Quite enjoyed the rock n roll, soul (swinging 60s) vibe. I like the Beatles and so, perhaps unsurprisingly, I enjoyed this one.

just very good. solid hits.

Classics abound

Very good. Alot of familiar songs. Need a few more hits for 5 stars. Best song is In My Life

Lots of good songs: Norwegian Wood and Nowhere Man are particularly good, as is Drive my Car. A few Beatles classics on here, too.
