Reviews (page 4 of 13)

Really chill. Good Sunday morning album. Like Silversun Pickups without the weird lead singer. I definitely pick up on the Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen influences.

Beautifully crafted soundscapes and Dylan-esque vocal delivery (and occasionally quality of performance) for modern times. A few people have mentioned the drums when scanning a few reviews, and I agree there is very little differentiation in patterns, which feels a shame but by all means is likely very intentional. Overall a great listening experience.

Really enjoyed this. 8/10 Most Excellent

Good band good music

It was kinda chill. A lot of mumbly words. I liked it but didn't understand all of it. I'll listen again. It gives a certain depressing vibe.

I liked this. Hadn't heard it before, but will definitely listen again.

The War on Drugs are a band whose dreamy music I can easily enjoy. And for me, they're also representative of the circular or non-linear nature of time. Let's unpack that through this record. Lost In The Dream is a well-crafted album demonstrating how good this band is while showing how connected it is to a rock 'n' roll timeline — I hear Dire Straits, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, and even a little Bob Dylan, as well as bits of Slowdive and other resonances. The War on Drugs integrates it all in a compelling way. Even with what I call a "prove it opener," a long track testing the listener's commitment to the album (something I respect from a confident artist). You could believe time is an arrow...like light is a wave, and yet the more I listen to this album the more I'm reminded of the cyclical way music lovers grow up with a few bands they attach to and champion — and how new bands start and new fans attach to them as they rise. And I don't hear all that rock history as a straight line passing through Lost In The Dream but rather as ripples through a music expressive of their contemporaries as well. The War on Drugs and this record are excellent — four stars for me, but easily a five star album for others...Maybe they are one of "your" bands, but I don't think they're one of mine, and that's okay. We're just on different waves, attached to different particles and when I listen I can appreciate all of that complexity of reference and experience without reducing them to a list of comparisons.

Pure nostalgia, the album sounds like summer. The big tracks on this album are so massive, but the rest are a bit boring.

Actually grew on me as I listened. They manage to capture that prairie rust belt sound 4/5

New to me and thoroughly enjoyed. He obviously grew up listening to Lindsey Buckingham and Bruce...pretty good influences if you ask me!

I’d prefer to give this a 3.5 because better than Stevie, but not quite a 4. Red Eyes is a great one. Some of the others, not enough happens.

A really fun album with a great sound. I love the long dreamy songs with sounds that harken back to singer songwriters of the late 80s and early 90s. Good times.

This album is so lush!!

In my playlist

Very enjoyable listen, at points got close to a 5 for me. It's like if the Killers made a Bob Dylan album. Powerful emotions, I love the long shifting songs.

This album was really fun! It reminded me of turnover, which has a vibe I really enjoy. A great listening experience.

I really loved this album. It felt calming throughout, and I found it genuinely beautiful in the way it made me feel while listening. Overall, a standout experience for me, and easily a 4/5.

Virkelig rart

Okay, so as it turns out, as I was getting ready to listen to this, I realized I was confusing them with The War And Treaty this entire time. I knew this was a band of white guys and not a Black duo, but I was expecting a more folk-y sound. Imagine my surprise when "Under The Pressure" kicked in! This is really cool. I can hear a little Springsteen in the vocals, and a little Death Cab-via-Jimmy Eat World in the music. Not listening the closest to the lyrics, but they give off a really isolated and lonely vibe. Is this one of those bands that has kind of a different sound every album? Not sure on that one, but they feel like they'd have the ability to do so if they desired. A little bit of 80s too, as "Disappearing" has a big "Running Up That HIll" vibe to it. Yeah, I was straight up vibing to this. This felt really good, really haunting and I can see this, after a few more listens, just crawling into my guts and refusing to leave. I'm normally not a fan of a lot of multiple 7+ minute songs on one album (I definitely said "ugh" out loud when I first saw this album was an hour), but the time flew by. This is great.

I listened to this album lots to be sure what I thought of it, and I'm still not really sure. The music is really good. I find the vocals very very reverb heavy which makes it hard to understand what is being sung sometimes. Or it may just be because he has the most American singing voice of all time. But it grew on me. I also felt the album ended very strongly with three really strong tracks. The first two tracks of the album also ensure it opens strongly. There is definitely a place for this music, and I think I ended up quite liking it. 4/5

Really incredible album. The only thing that let it down for me was the mixing on some songs, and some songs felt a little long. Otherwise fantastic.

This is a beautiful record. Textured and lovely, and then powerful in spots.

Klingt wie eine Mischung aus Bruce Springsteen und Bob Dylan. Gutes Album!

Me lo guardo

The intersection of Sigur Rós and Don Henley, which I actually have room for in my life. I like this album quite a lot. However, even Dimery now agrees that this is not album you must hear before you die.

Pretty good. 4/5

Great album. Feels like something from the 70’s, but still modern. Great guitar parts, and Red Eyes especially is a great song.

I really liked this one. I liked his voice, I liked the style. Some good sitting with an emotion music. Think I’ll keep listening to it. What a nice little surprise. Fav song: Burning Least fav: The Haunting Idle

Was wondering why the heck this random indie album was on her but this is very solid Specific rating - 4.3 Fav song - an ocean in between the waves Least fav- the haunting idle

Wasn't surprised to find out the lead singer produced Sam Fender's album, you can really hear how this inspired his sound. So lovely to get a good album from a band I've never heard of and want to keep listening to! Favourite song: An Ocean In Between The Waves Least: The Haunting Idle

I really liked this! Not uniformly great, but strong songwriting and nice mellow vibes overall.

I was a late-comer to The War on Drugs, but when they announced a show here a few years ago I decided to dive in and see what I was missing and I was so glad I did. I love this album. It almost sounds like one long song to me. These guys remind me a little of Gilmour's Pink Floyd.

Wow, never heard about this band. The album is smooth, mellow and surprisingly good. If you need to have something playing in the background, look no further. 4/5

Damn good album! A great surprise and a new band discovery. They sound like someone put Tom Petty with The Cure and told them to play the Shoegaze genre.

Pretty good

I didn't need to read to hear that this album was influenced by the 1980's. At first I thought Tom Petty had written Suffering and Springsteen was singing in Red Eyes. Its a little deep and sad, and in ways perfect on a snowy day being stuck indoors (Lost in a Dream just felt mystical in a way with the snow gently falling). It was nice and some days I feel like I could fall into it deeply and feel it like a warm hug, where other days it just wouldn't be the right fit. I think my biggest criticism is that its less inspired by the 80's as it is emulating the 80's.

sort of washy and echoey. I'd like to sink my ears into this more but I'll have to come back to it. I like it.

I’m glad we got these guys. I’ve wanted to get to know their music better and never made the effort until now. I really like their sound, there’s a beautiful melancholy to it. They create some really moving soundscapes and his vocals really layer on the emotion too. Burning and Red Eyes are my favorites on here, love the energy in those.

Very cool chill vibes I like the vocals and the programming on the guitar 4.5/5 Best-Disappearing

First time I’ve heard this album. Enjoyed it very much

I enjoyed this

An album I experienced at least semi-contemporaneously and still like! I had only listened to the whole thing a few times before but I have some of the tracks on my playlists. Somewhat held back by having many very similar sounds. Standouts: Ocean in between the waves; red eyes

Great indie vibes

This is probably the first one of its kind on this list so far, in that it's right up my alley and I should really like it... But I just think it's okay? Musically this album is certainly good and I can only say it wears its inspirations on the sleeve, though that might be a downside too. The whole time I'm listening along instead of enjoying I'm thinking "huh this sounds a lot like music I've heard before" very namely Rod Stewart. Seriously listen to Young Turks and then Red Eyes back to back, sonically the similarity is striking. It's difficult because I can't fault this album for things I've heard before but if you're going to subject me to an hour of it, and it all pretty pretty similar I'll be left unsure of what to think and even moreso what to critique. If you're a little less cynical than I you could probably take this as "more of a thing I already like" but 30 years later and that really falls onto the double edge sword of "I like it because it reminds me of a different time" vs "I've heard it all before" and I really am not sure why I fall on the latter. It really could just be my mood and that's pushing me to be unsure how to rate this. Part of me wants to say 3, it coincides with the sentiment of other albums in this tier that it's just not quite interesting enough to justify placement on this list but I'm not particularly aware of the music scape of mid 2010s do who knows if this was refreshing at the time and I'm just unaware. But part of me wants to acknowledge that even if it's VERY influenced by 80s music the experience and listen are pretty enjoyable and I can't deny the quality. I think if I gave a three I'd consider it too harsh so it'll be a low four but I highly recommend forming your own opinions. Also listen to Rod Stewart.

Highlights for me are the dreamy sequences and guitar passages. Album is firmly in the early 2010s in a good way. Not blowing me away by today's standards but an enjoyable listen. Would revisit on a nice walk or background during some busy work. Some of the tracks are a little same-y for me and sometimes its a good thing but often it creates a more sleepy vibe.

Really good. And unexpected. Will add it to my main rotation for sure.

Great sounding album. Has a soothing epic-ness to it. Great Petty/Fleetwood Mac/etc vibes, while still being its own great thing.

C’est parfois Lost In The dream que je me retrouve… Mon âme s’est allégée. Merci! 4,5/5

I really liked this actually. Very easy to listen to Songs added to playlist: - Under The Pressure - Suffering - Eyes To The Wind - Burning

"I was born in the wrong generation, they just don't make real music like this anymore (ㅠoㅠ)" I really enjoy these types of albums where elements of classic pop and rock music are updated and recontextualized for a modern audience. In this instance, The War on Drugs take the pained yet hopeful heartland rock of Bruce Springsteen (with dashes of Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, and a bit of U2 for good measure) and infuses it with neo-psychedelic elements and moody, introspective lyrics. Oftentimes, songs will end with extended dreamlike outros where you are simply left to sit and process the emotions of each track. As a result, a few songs and the album as a whole drag for a bit too long, but it is still a wonderful album. In fact, the long runtime could work in the project's benefit in the right circumstance. I bet it would make for a great soundtrack during a long road trip, especially at night. Standout Tracks: Under the Pressure, Red Eyes, Eyes to the Wind, Burning, Lost in the Dream, In Reverse Score: A-

Liked it. Made me think of Kurt Vile.

Love this album, but I feel the second half is dramatically better than the first, and still find the lyrics to be kind of generic/lacking in imagery

Liked it. Still haven't relistened to see if I'd actually save any songs for future listening

This had been on my to listen list for the last 10 years with good reason. Extremely my shit, will probably go up in rating after a few more listens. Playlist track: Eyes To The Wind

guitar scratched my brain so hard, i had to listen to it three times in a row

I’m starting to really enjoy these sad albums and I think I really missed out on living this out when it came out and I was in the painful age

8.6/10

very mellow and calm

so tender, so comforting, so beautiful. such rich music that leaves you feeling warm. record flows really well and it just feels so continuous that it makes it a proper listening experience rather than just a bunch of songs. gorgeous occasional psychedelic influences and brilliant combination of instruments to make such a gorgeous sound

If I’m being critical, The War On Drugs broadly have one song, it’s a Bruce Springsteen style song, but it is a good song at least. The first 2 tracks on this album are the 2 best by some distance, or at least the ones I usually come back for. It would be easy to slap 3 stars on this and move on because it fades to background music but generally, it’s a decent enough listen, however, it’s an album that is very immersive and given the right mood, is perfect to get lost in - maybe that’s what the album title is telling us.

A memorable record for me and an amazing show live.

fallegt og rólegt

Decent

Parhaat: Red Eyes, In Reverse

(Double Post and Vote apologies) Bob Dylan sings Springsteen Heartland music with a hint of Joshua Tree era U2 thrown into the mix. Did I say Don Henley? He's in there too. A pastiche of sounds that make for easy-late night listening, or meandering the American landscapes. This shouldn't work for me, and sometimes it doesn't. But sometimes I need the comforts it brings.

Forgot how good this album is.

nice flow

While this isn't the most amazing album I have ever listened to, in terms of lyrics or concept, the sound of this album is amazing. I feel like song transitions and atmosphere are perfect.

Perfect for my walk, enjoyed it a lot. A bit repetitive but I don’t mind too much

Very good atmosphere. It's a bit on the long side, but that's not a bad thing here. Almost reminds me of Porcupine Tree in some respects.

Favourite Songs: Red Eyes An Ocean In Between The Waves Disappearing

Very Bob Dylan / Bruce Springsteen coded. Really enjoyed my time with this album, although a couple songs did kind of wander around and overstay their welcome. When it's at full speed though, it's unstoppable.

Captures the bad at their transitional moment between the Dylan-informed krautrock of their early work and the arena-sized Springsteen worship they leaned into later. The result: Lost in the Fucking Dream, an ambient rock masterpiece. Sonically tender, emotionally massive. It has the intimacy of bedroom pop, but it's big enough to fit the lowest moments of your life inside. I'll never forget when I saw them play "Under the Pressure," and a generally docile crowd came alive during the bridge. If "Burning" ever doesn't make me feel like I can be a hero, just for one day, where am I and how did I get there? The cresting of a wandering guitar line, the tidal shift of a single chord change. An ocean between the waves indeed.

Lovely, dreamy album. Topped only by A Deeper Understanding that came after.

I think this was a good album, but I also kept forgetting I was listening to it while it was on. That may have been Christmas busyness rather than album quality issue, but it was sort of gentle and soft and kind of just slid into the background for me.

I’m a fan. All starts to sound the same but that’s kinda the vibe. Would listen to this a lot.

I've seen them live a couple years ago, with The National. Wasn't too familiar with them, I did listen to their stuff, might have listen to this album, might haven only listen to the hits, I don't remember, then I've seen them live, and never listened to them again. But this is good, I'm enjoying it, driving drum beats that makes you wanna shake your head, with a lot of atmosphere in the production, quite dreamy; Arcade Fire meet Arcade Fire... sounds like Arcade Fire really, with a country rock vibe, I've got Neil Young on my mind maybe, but the vocal melodies make me think of him in particular. Fav Track: Under the Pressure

I really enjoyed this at the time. less so now, but I still enjoyed the listen. Its like a more indie Dire straits in some parts with a foundation in folk music. Red Eyes is a fantastic song, but there are also a few others in there worthy of attention. The weeping guitar in disappearing is beautiful. The folky Eyes to the wind is my standout track. Is it 4 stars? I think it is. 4 Stars

A great mixture of Springsteen, Henley, Dylan, jam bands and ambient trance, with hypnotic beats that feel like they could go on forever. Like a runaway ghost train, shimmering in the fading light as it barrels towards a desert horizon. Favorite song: Red Eyes

Felt really fresh and exciting. I never knew where a song was going. Preferred the instrumental songs more but really enjoyed the whole album as an experience I'll be revisiting. 8/10

Another great familiar album. One of my favourite songs on here. So moving. Its a good background album while i’m doing things that need my brain

Loved this album when it was first released. The mood and beats can get a bit repetitive, but when it’s the tone you enjoy it doesn’t matter. First half of the album is easy 5/5.

I'm a little disappointed. When this album started I felt like this was going to be a 5 for sure... It's melancholic 2010s indie rock that reminds me of the Killers - a band I love. The vibe is strong, the music is a joy to listen to, the lyrics are solid... "This is an album I'll listen to on repeat for years to come!" I thought to myself. Sweet naive boy... You're only on the second track. You can't make those kinds of predictions. By the end of the album I feel differently. To be clear, the music is just as good as I initially evaluated - nothing changed per se... except it's long. A lot of the tracks are longer than 5 or even 6 minutes, the longest being almost 9. The whole thing goes for exactly an hour, which would be totally fine except a lot of it sounds the same. And that's the problem; I LIKE IT. I don't want to mark it down for being too much of a good thing, but... even the best song in the world starts to get repetitive after a straight hour of listening, and whilst it's not quite as extreme as sounding like one song for a whole hour, it definitely starts to get a little tedious. I will probably revisit this album at some point and try and find some hidden depths and variation that I'm not hearing on a first listen that make it more enjoyable. I'll also definitely listen to this again just as background music, or in shorter bursts. I suspect that with a little time and some relistening this could definitely become a 5 for me.

I knew Red Eyes coming in. I like it but it sounds so Bruce Springsteen to me.

I wish this album had a stronger middle. One of my all-time faves - like a Dire Straits and Bob Dylan mash-up

Great for chill vibes, really enjoyed it.

Good-quality 2010s-era indie rock. Would listen to while driving

A very pleasant and enjoyable indie album, but a lot of the songs sounded very similar and it all just kind of blended together. 3.5 stars.

Can't quite give this five stars because it turns out you CAN have too much of a good thing/some of it started to get pretty old after a while... but there's definitely a 5-star 40-minute album buried within it somewhere

I saw The War on Drugs in a small dive bar many years ago, and it was a really amazing set. I didn’t notice at the time how freaking similar this guy can sound to Dylan or Springsteen. In the flesh, I thought he sounded unique!

Great live shows too.

Nice atmospheric stuff! Could listen to again.

Nice soundscapes, but lack of varition grates after a while.

I like the soundscapes created, it creates a nice and relaxing mood. It's a very beautiful sounding album, if only a little over-indulgent. I think the songs could be cut down by a minute or two and still retain the beauty. I also think it could benefit from madness, like some ramped up freneticism to contrast the beauty. I feel like the songs stay on a path without deviating too much. Ethereal but a little too safe.

Musically great, enjoyed much

I thought what to rate this album for a while. I feel like it is between a very strong 7 and a weak 8. But after some deliberation, I settled on an 8. I have a weak spot for beautifully textured atmospheric music. This album wasn’t overloaded with vocals (although they’re also good) and really let the instruments breathe. The atmosphere is great, and the instruments build up to some very satisfying ethereal-sounding parts. Overall though, although I felt that the highs were quite high, some parts were a little drawn out and uneventful.

I was pleasantly surprised to see this record crop up although I really can't put my finger on what it is I like about them. There's nothing especially different or unusual about The War On Drugs - they don't stand out particularly. If anything, their sound seems quite dated - they put me in mind of those 'grown up' bands that hung around just outside the Top 40 in the late 80s, like World Party, The Blue Nile, at al. They don't sound like those bands, they just remind me of them. Their sound seems to adhere to a well trodden path - I really don't think, in the grand scheme of things, this album is an essential listen, but I'm glad it exists. Crap name for a band though.

Off the cuff remark: when I this was first relased for some reason I had expected some kind of trance album not the guitar-wash Springsteen-equeness of the album, and I was pleasantly surprised. It works well as an album and I enjoy it, as I have again now, but is it "great" ? Standout track:opener Under Pressure seems obvious Suffering is good too. However it seems to pass by, all very nice and enjoyable, working well as an album but it is a bit, lacking in a real hook. Revisit?: I have and will, but because it is a good solid album, nothing earth shattering.

This reminded me of live bands playing in a bar. This was nice to have playing in the background. I'd personally rate this a 3.5, but I'm okay with placing it at 4 instead.

I love The War On Drugs and only discovered them in recent times.

I dug this a lot. Ethereal indie music but I get E-street band vibes from them. I support The War on Drugs.

Big fan of the War in Drugs, seen them a few times live. I'd forgotten how good this album is.

8 Actually a rlly great new listen I’ll for sure come back to this one

Brilliant album. Chilled and transcendental

It's a truly, dreamy, uplifting album. One of those where I just can't understand where people have rated it low.

Really enjoyed this. Was getting a Springsteen vibe. Technically seen them live when they supported the Stones, but don’t actually remember. Simpsons: No

Good vibes whilst on the plane home for Christmas.

Like an even more intentional combination of Springsteen & Destroyer re Poison Season. Plus a little Dire Straights in there

This one was pretty good. Looks back at the sounds of the 80s with fresh eyes and modern sensibilities (there's even a Dylan-inspired track!), with a few more experimental-y bits mixed in. It all just sounds very deliberate. Could see myself listening again. Fav tracks: Under The Pressure, Suffering

This is a night driving album. I listened to it through the day and liked it, but in the evening I needed to take a short drive and it was superb. The music fits empty roads and streetlights passing overhead.

I liked it. Good background music that is pleasant to listen to.

Great to reconnect with this one

Like Dylan/Tom Petty had a kid Depressing jams with impressive soundscapes

Reverby, ambient soundscapes with some Bruce Springsteen vibes. Meticulously produced. Long instrumental passages mean that you can sometimes drift away while listening. Sometimes in a good way and sometimes in a not so good way. Fairly melancholic. Good vocals. Guitars are crisp and tight but not particularly experimental. Good listen overall but a bit slow paced for my tastes. Maybe needs a second listen to fully appreciate. Favourite track - Red Eyes. 7.5/10

I've heard of the artist before, but was basically completely unaware of the music prior to listening to this. The production is pretty interesting, and there's definitely a vibe going on here. I don't hate this, and would like to listen to it again in the future. At times, the vocals sound like Paul Simon trying to do an impersonation of Bob Dylan in the 1960s... and it's surprisingly not a bad combination.

Buen disco. Me gustó escucharlo. Lo recomiendo.

Really good album. Varied tracks, need to give it another listen sometime.

Beautiful production; lyrically solid; some of the songs do drag on a bit

Njihov najbolji album

Decent - would be happy to listen again

This sounds like every famous artist from the 70s-80s combined. I could spot Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Genesis, Bruce Springsteen, etc. at some point in here

Nice chill album, liked it a lot

This starts off great and in other parts also good. But too many atmospheric slow songs. Suppose depends on your mood. Needs a bit more bite in places

Favourite track: Eyes To The Wind Very enjoyable, lovely vocals and atmospheric guitar.

Bob Dylan sings Springsteen Heartland music with a hint of Joshua Tree era U2 thrown into the mix. Did I say Don Henley? He's in there too. A pastiche of sounds that make for easy-late night listening, or meandering the American landscapes. This shouldn't work for me, and sometimes it doesn't. But sometimes I need the comforts it brings.

Really good album some great guitar sounds. Ignore the grumpy old men giving it 1 or 2

Nice, calm, full of beautiful melodies.

A throwback classic rock album, but with enough mystery and great songs to make it work. Fantastic album.

While I can hear influences from 2000s bands like Radiohead, The Killers, and Tycho, this album has a floating atmosphere defined by strong reverb, slide guitar, and a subtle bluesy touch. Many tracks share a similar mood, and the longer song lengths can make it feel a bit drawn-out at times. I can see why they have an indie vibe — their music leans toward a more artistic and introspective side rather than anthemic songwriting.

BYD Seal, Heidenheim, Deutschland. Sehr schönes Album.

Such a good mix of prog indie and anericana. Fantastic listen

Dreamy vamp, reminds me of a modern Tom Petty or Bob Dylan

I’ve actually been saving this record because I love it so much. I only knew War on Drugs by name really when I got tickets to see them play the Bowl. I was a fan of a few of the songs I’d heard but had never dove in all the way. I knew it was music I’d dig and it’d be a good soundtrack for a few cold ones. I was blown away. The songwriting is sincere without being saccharine. The musicianship is impressive without being alienating. It’s nostalgic without being kitsch. It feels like an album I’ve known my entire life without being able to recite the words. It feels like the soundtrack to moments in my life that I haven’t lived yet. There’s a warmth hear that feels like the hearth of a childhood home that has long been ashes. The way space is used in here is incredible. As a fan of The Mars Volta and The Grateful Dead, I really love interludes of ambient music that enhance the scene. Like a long sustained shot panning over the environment in the middle of a scene. Under the pressure feels like the perfect opener. The outro feels like the draw of the band so Red Eyes can slingshot you into indie soft rock nirvana.

After dozens of listens in the background while clicking Excel in an office, I finally listened to the lyrics and cringed a bit. Music is still fantastic, voice could be better

Listening feels like eating candy.

First time listening to this band and I love this album. Will have to check out some of their other stuff

This was a pleasant surprise. Already in my streaming library for some reason. Actually quite enjoyed it.

». Tu entends le Bruce Springsteen de Darkness on the Edge of Town. "Lost in the Dream" le titre est parfait.

Paul Simon, Talk Talk influences. Cosy folk, rock and ambient vibes.

Love it, bought it back in the day. Dreamy.

This album was a pleasant surprise for me. Started great and continues as a a solid 2010's alternative album. Kinda drags on a little too long, crossing the hour mark. Overall solid.

actually enjoyed it, very 2014

Sounds like Dylan and I love Dylan

Their biggest album and their breakthrough. My least favorite but still fantastic.

4.5 Love this album just saving my 5's for truly massive drops and I feel like I'll hold off.

This album probably isn't everyones cup of tea but I liked it a lot. Sorta the Killers meet Bruce Springsteen vibes. It's not perfect, but it makes a good argument for 5 stars. 4 stars, but maybe almost a 5.

Very good, favourite track was disappearing. I really liked the ethereal sounding instrumentals

Favorite Track: Red Eyes

Day 61, 11th record I own. The War on Drugs is to Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty as Tame Impala is to John Lennon. This band is the exception to the rule of ‘00s bands not using an article at the start of their name. The Strokes and the White Stripes started in the 90s, don’t @ me. I legit believe labels and managers asked bands to drop the “the” a la Facebook. Gotta catch this band live soon!

Finally growing in to liking the War on Drugs. Listened to their stuff over the years on the Indie stations and forgot that there was an album from them in the book. Red Eyes is already a song that I listen to regularly and is in my playlist and this record was a very nice listen. I'd give this a high rating solely for my enjoyment on the genre, but I think there are some really good instrumentals and productions that make this a great 2010s Indie album.

Found myself really wanting to play it again and again.

I liked this album, it was reminding me at times of Dire Straits and even Paul Simon. I was mowing the lawn while listening to it so I feel like I do owe it another listen.

This is one of my favorite bands of the last 20 years, so I’m biased (they started in Philly to boot). Some songs can be a little long, and while they sound similar I feel like it’s more thematic than repetitive. What I love about the War on Drugs is the hypnotic sound of their songs - the production, the arrangements, the tones, the vibe, the synths, etc even if I remember those more than specific songs. A little lap steel here, a little bari sax there, a little Leslie speaker here…keeps it interesting and well rounded. Adam Granduciel has a unique voice that still sounds a little bit like a lot of different people (Dylan? Bruce? Tom Petty? Ryan Adams? Win Butler?). I think the perfectionist feel and melodicism is what sets them apart from other similar indie bands. Great lyrics too if you can actually discern (or read) them. I’m a fan

Actually very enjoyable. Some real nostalgia coming off this too. Red eyes is genuinely a great song.

Reminded me of (the best of) Ryan Adams and alt-country broadly construed. A good record.

Better than Coldplay

Makes me wanna go on a road trip across the states.

The songs on this are really solid and have really good groove. I think this is a 3.5 for me only because of the ethereal keys in the back. It kind of overpowers the songs and makes them all sound similar. Still, bumping because it's so good it overcomes this.

I liked this chilled out ambient vibe.

Awesome album

Indie Springsteen disciples have a way of proliferating like Marvel Comics variants - over here a Craig Finn, over there a John Darnielle, here a Jason Isbell. there a Katie Crutchfield. Adam Granduciel's particular formula is *What If...Springsteen Discovered the Delay Pedal and Pot?* And it's fascinating the lack of anxiety of influence he displays; he knows he's aping the Boss and he knows you know it and he does it anyway. He gets away with it mostly by avoiding Bruce's vocal affectations in favor of a clearer vocal tone, and by keeping his lyrics suitably impressionistic rather than concrete like the original's. But the real star here is the guitar work - J Mascis and Kevin Shields by way of *Stardust*-era Willie Nelson, lush and full while simultaneously stately and unadorned. I tried to follow along with a lyric sheet but realized by about "Eyes to the Wind" that I was feeling rather than reading.

Good songs mostly but mixed in with experimental atufd

So glad to be introduced to this album, its growing on me by the hour

some cool indie rock

Great for a rainy morning.

Atmospheric. Nice extended musical passages

Really enjoyed this one, very good instrumentals and a good vibe, would listen again

This was a very good album. Towards the 2nd half a lot of albums sounded alike but it was stilll a good listen

Omg Kurt! I love his solo stuff but had never really listened to WoD. I loved it!

I was in early-ish on TWOD, seeing them open for Guided By Voices in Central Park circe 2012 so I was familiar with this one. These songs unfold before you, stretching out a wide open sonic path propelling the listener forward. The album is thematic, so everything fits together but does not get too same-y for me. Awash in synth and guitar tones and a strong emotional core, a simple distillation would be yearning 80s style rock with ambient and Dylan-esque influence but this does not put a finger on the mood created.

Good Songs: Under The Pressure, Red Eyes, Suffering, An Ocean In Between The Waves, Eyes To The Wind, Burning, Lost In The Dream Mid Songs: Disappearing, In Reverse Bad Songs:

A recent review called this "Bob Dylan covered by The Killers" as if that were a bad thing.

I like the elements of like dream pop stuff, with the drum machines and reverbs and delays and stuff. I also really like the long song structures, feels like they're not really rushing around anywhere, which is always nice, the long, drawn out instrumental parts towards the ends of a few of the songs feel really unique. It does feel very much heavily inspired by some things, but quite a diverse list, so it feels like quite a unique melting pot, I feel like his vocals are more alike Bruce Springsteen or even Arcade Fire at times, but there's like synths and stuff, so it feels different. And it also feels quite inspired by some classic rock, not the too blues or yelling side, which I think is good. Favourite songs: all. Overall around 8/10 (probably quite close to 9)

Snuck a 4. Really like war on drugs and this was a decent, chilled listen

It’s just good rock music If only we had latched on to this and not arctic monkey

1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die: 33/1001 I didn't realize this album was so recent, and recency increases my expectations of an album in some ways. In some ways, it's easier than ever to write music, but it's also as hard as ever to stand out. I think The War On Drugs stood out with this album. It's a blend of indie rock and experimental psychedelic sound that creates a chill and easy listen. Podium: 1. Suffering 2. Red eyes 3. Under the pressure The synthesizer remains a top-tier instrument for enchanting music. Each song evolves its own way just as the album continues revealing itself to the listener with subtle changes and sharp turns that keep you engaged. The lyrics are self-reflective and meaningful, and together the music remains captivating even when it's stretched to its max. I'll be listening again. I give Lost In The Dream by The War On Drugs 4/5 stars for these reasons.

expected to dislike and i actually enjoyed it. really a 3.5 for me but i guess i will round up for this one

Great album. Love it from the first song. - 4/5

Would buy

Banger album.

Love it.

I remember reading on the Wikipedia page that among the chief influences for this album were Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan, among others. And listening through this album, and not even closely... Yeah, it sure sounds like all of those artists. Like, "Yeah, that sounds like it's comin' offa a spacier version of BORN TO RUN." Or, y'know, "Yeah, the singer sure sounds like Bob Dylan here." It got me wondering if this was one of those kinda bands that got all sorts of critical acclaim just because it reminded the old guard rock journalists of all the old stuff they like. I mean, I can certainly hear how much this material wouldn't really excite the "average listener" who doesn't go as gaga for Springsteen or Dylan like they do. You just gotta look at how long these songs are on average, or how similar to each other they can all feel. But frankly, though? I don't care about any criticism you can lob against this record. I had this thing on while I was building a LEGO set, and y'know what? This was the perfect sorta atmospheric music to go along with that sort of thing. I'm sure if I actually tried to pay closer attention to it, I'd be willing to earnestly spit a lot of the aforementioned criticism against it. But, hey, I am far from the kinda person who'll criticize music for being "wallpaper." You gotta realize, there's a lotta value in adding color to otherwise empty spaces. And in doing that, well, this album worked as dang well as it could have. I'm aware, this isn't the most high-praised endorsement of this album in the world. I'm basically giving it props for being good enough background music. On top of that, I'm completely ignoring this thing's actual lyrics, so how good of a review is this, really? And that's fair, but, I mean, music serves different needs for different people. I can only be honest about what I got out of an album, and, well... Sometimes, you want good wallpaper, and that's exactly what I got. I can't be too hard on it for providing for me like that, even if it wasn't the "correct" way. So maybe I got lost in the dream. And I'm sure the actual lyrics on the album wouldn't be in favor of that sort of thing, from what I skimmed from the Wikipedia page and a group member's review. But for what I was doing at the time, it was a darn fine one to get myself lost in. 43 years after Nixon first introduced it, I guess it was about time we got something good out of the war on drugs.

Good 2010's indie, but not much else to say. Solid 4 Stars.

i love me some sad dad opium dream rock

lost in the dream indeed!

One of my favorite albums 10 years ago. Maybe not the strongest songwriting but it does an unbelievable job of creating a certain atmosphere. In between a 4 and 5 but rounding down as there are a couple of lulls. (maybe when I finally finish this list I will go back and change to a 5 star. My wife chose under the pressure as a song in our wedding and I thought that fit in with the ceremony quite well

Listened to this album probably a thousand times since it came out. It's beautiful, swaying and floating.. feels like a constant cool breeze on a warm day. Though yes it can make you feel sleepy listening to this album on a road trip.

First 2 songs are amazing, back half of the album wasn’t quite as good to me.

This album was beautiful.

Wasn't expecting to enjoy this as much as I did. Feels like a mixture between Dire Straits and Tom Petty. Not as distinct a voice as Tom Petty, but good.

Good vibes only.

Very chilled, unhurried vibes that you have to let wash over you. I prefer TWOD at their more anthemic and pacey, so Red Eyes is the clear standout, but I generally just enjoy soaking in the atmosphere.

Not really my cup of tea but I respect it

Sounds a little like sigor ros... Influenced? Very vibey

Hauntingly beautiful. Reminds me of the soundtrack to Adventureland

A very solid, nostalgia dreamy indie rock album with some 80's stadium nostalgia.

The instruments are quite satisfying to hear. Theyre sonically quite similar to my untrained ears. Actually, they become less similar the more you listen

Good enjoyable fun summer vibe album. Some songs just felt too long for no reason but it was still good.

5)) the war on the drugs

High 3/low 4 leaning 4, previously heard

8/10 Favorites: Under The Pressure, In Reverse

Very familiar, a very good but not exactly a ground breaking album. Fantastic driving music.

Loved this. Like the Waterboys with Trashcans drummer and Paul Simon of vocals. Very high quality.

I feel like I'm the target audience to give a five star to this. Mega props for him being one of the few new guitar heroes created in this century and crafting an unmistakeable wall of sound. But 8 minutes a song?

Dreamy and ethirical

Chill, melodic rock. Very enjoyable, not particularly memorable

This is just Bruce Springsteen if he was an indie rocker. It's not an insult in the slightest but the drawback is the song lengths. Three 7 minute song, one 9 minute song, three 6 minute songs, and the rest are somehow the normal length of 4 minutes. This album could have easily been like 10-15 minutes shorter by cutting some songs short. But the songs are pretty good so I guess I can't complain too much.

I love this album and the atmospheres it creates, contemporary treasure!

Great band name. I only knew the first two tunes before today and loved them both and his no idea they appeared sequentially on one album. So pretty strong start. The rest holds its own pretty well mostly charting the space between those first two tunes. But that's ok. This music creates a great atmosphere.

Nice album. Track 1 is my favorite; enjoyed the hints of Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, and Bruce Springsteen in a few songs. Mellow kind of spacey rock.

yeah pas 5/5 parce que c’est dépressif

I still listen to this one on occasion. Red Eyes is a banger.

Surprisingly good. Caught me off guard at points

I love a good dreamy vibe. I think I've listened to this album before at some point, but didn't remember a lot because it's not very catchy. It's very pleasant though.

fav: under the pressure 4-/5

An honestly ethereal experience. I could listen to this record on loop and not get tired of it. Intensely catchy in a very specific way... like I can tell these melodies are going to be popping into my head off and on for months now. Felt... well... dreamy! The Springsteen influence is definitely felt at times, too.

Had to listen while road tripping with family across northern Oregon but general consensus in the car was favorable. Agree this was surprisingly easy to listen to and quite good. Several songs were radio hits and familiar but rest of album was good.

J - 4/5 Best Track - "Red Eyes" F - 3/5

very easy to listen to, the album is like songs I grew up with

"Under The Pressure" is a great song. Very easy listening rock and roll at the beginning, and some great ambient post-rock-ish minutes towards the end. "Disappearing" is a nice easy-listening song. I like the ambient background instrumentals on all of the songs so far. All of the tracks have been quite long thus far, but they have a lot of distinct sections within them, so they aren't getting too stale. "Eyes To The Wind" had Dylan-esque vocals. The song was nice but a little boring. I really like "Lost In The Dream". Also very Dylan. This is my favorite song so far. This was a long album, but it was easy enough listening that it didn't feel draining to listen to. There was a lot of variety in here, and I enjoy the slow ambient sound underlying many of the songs. 8/10

Ganska lugnt och chill, typ bra middagsmusik.

Amazing stuff ngl

Loved it, especially after the Radiohead yesterday. 4.5 stars tbh

A pretty good album, I liked Red Eyes, An Ocean In between The Waves and Lost In The Dream.

Did not expect the way this guy sings, like Pop Bob Dylan

This album is very 80s. Gives me Bruce Springsteen vibes. Maybe a little Bob Dylan? Idk. I like it a lot. Its fun. Rock but also dreamy. The solos were cool, vocals were great, and I could listen to this on loop. Actual rating...3.5. Liked Songs: "Under The Pressure" , "Red Eyes" , "An Ocean In Between The Waves" , "Eyes To The Wind" , "Burning" , "Lost In The Dream" , "In Reverse"

I was expecting more drugs and less war. Pleased …. Bruce would be proud

Man, I was allllll about this record 10 years ago. I think it still holds up, but I think it has more lulls than it needs in hindsight. Some of the production and the synth/digital beats are a little thin for me now, but overall it still slaps when it slaps. I just wish it slapped more.

I’m really torn between a 4 and a 5 for this album. It’s got everything I love — the best parts of folk and 80s pop with fresh, crisp, modern production. I fully expect this band to make it into my regular rotation. That said, I feel there are better 5-star representatives for this genre. So I’ll be conservative and round down.

Another band I had a vague prejudice towards only to be confronted with the fact that... I actually really vibe with it.

Pretty good, chill rock album, very enjoyable

Was already familiar with this album. Really strong, captivating opening. A joy to listen to, even if it doesn't grab your attention all the way through. Great driving music. No bad songs.

The neo-Springsteen comments are true, and it's a lovely rock album and it gives you some of that feel-good driven sort of music you've got to crave. As such, the more upbeat tracks hit better than the slower ones for me, and the first half of the album stands pretty firmly above the second The spirit of Rock 'n' Roll flows through my body and bones

Really solid album. Melodic, with a great Springsteen-esque sound. Have listened many times and will again. More than a 4.

I was shocked how much I like this and to hear how much they influenced more recent Killers material. Will be looking up more by them.

Great album

A big and atmospheric album with a psychedelic sound. Meanders a little too much, but really strong in spite of that. Best song: Under the Pressure

Great album, but repetitive.

Mellow

THis album seems to be divisive on here. I loved it! The atmospheric mix of guitar based alternative rock really landed with me.

Good music, I enjoyed listening to it, though I didn't find it particularly noteworthy

Y'know, Imma go ahead and give this one four stars. I found myself enjoying it quite a lot, which is rare for albums on here.

Really enjoyed this, nice to have on while I'm working. I'd go back to it again.

If bob Dylan and Sam fender were good

Really liked this album. Kept forgetting it was newer, kept thinking it was an 80’s album. Reminded me of sting for some reason.

yllättävän rento

Not mind-blowingly good but really enjoyable. I’m happy to be introduced to a new chill indie rock group

Really good, especially for passive listening. (Also I'm a grandmaster at battleship if it's playing)

generic and anonymous in a very nice way

Thoroughly enjoyed. Would play again

It's a bit monotonous—not every song seems part of a master plan. But a long walk in the rain put it in context. It's slow, but it's *deep*. It's simple on its face, until you hear a secret saxophone slide in. A shimmery synth line float past. A goofy lil' piano chord chirp in the back. Its layers swell and breathe. It takes its time, but when it gets there...oh man.

Moody and melodic. I liked it.

2014 was a funny year with a lot of weird music. This is a good album with an amazing imersive experience. This is all I can say.

Pretty chill album. Moments reminded me of Bruce Springsteen, others of Bob Dylan with better singing and less crappy harmonica. 4/5

would listen again, drags slightly but v good

Bloody good album. Heard bits and pieces of them but never sat down and listened to a complete album. Worth it.

The moment I saw Indie Rock as the listed genre for this cut, I felt at peace. It was like I went home to see my parents, say hello to my dogs, like I found the nicest coffee, or enjoyed the warmest hug. The genre I’m most in love with. The War On Drugs decided to greet me with an anthemic, cathartic opener, and then proceeded to hold my hand throughout the rest of the record, combining the familiar sound I know and love. The album was fantastic, would recommend to anyone.

I get the point that "it all sounds the same". But that sound is glorious - "Red Eyes" probably one of my favourite tracks from recent years. *checks album release date - it's over 10 years old* Shhhiiiiiiiiiiiiit - me is old.

Mix of too many emotions. Great production. Guitar solos>>>>>>

Their 3rd album. Indie Rock. Under Pressure and Red Eyes are two good tracks to open with. Burning is another good track. The lyrics throughout the album are lovely. Production is tight. So easy to listen to. Such a nice album. Melodic, calm yet deep. Porch, scotch and contemplate life kind of music.

Good mellow music.

I'd give this a 3.5, I think. When it first came out, I was excited by a band and album that was going back to 80's rock like Petty and Springsteen and others. However, it feels like a shadow and facsimile of those things rather than a continuation or something that really stands beside them, to my ears. So, it's not bad music and is pretty easy to listen to, but I just never really want to listen to it on my own time, as I'd rather just go back to the older, original stuff.

I really enjoyed this, the album opener really brings you out of the real world before immersing yourself into this album. Great tones, and well put together. Never listened to TWOD, but really pleasantly surprised. 8/10.

Very instrument based, a bit of a journey

Really pleasant to listen to and felt quite earnest, despite being released in 2014 it sounds like it came out years before then.

Bastante bien.

Too forceful to be indie but too cerebral to be 'guitar rock' (whatever that actually means), The War on Drugs isn't a war at all, more like a unification of various traditions: retrospecting and portending at the same time. Not folk rock either, since they don't neglect soul for a strained profundity or a wistful nothing. Adam Grundeciel sings w/ a contained turbulence in the way of a Bruce Springsteen, while the music balances length w/ essence. Lyrically, there's uplift and pain, like anywhere, but here compellingly and necessarily: 'Don't want another dark time to think to myself / We won't get lost inside it all, you're on my way'; 'I wanna rise on a road / Just let me rise up against the waves.' And wrenchingly beautiful as well.

Very good listen. Thoroughly enjoyed this one during my high. It meshed with the vibes perfectly.

I love this era of indie music and while I haven't heard this particular album before, I'm familiar with The War on Drugs. This is a solid album and one that I'll probably listen to again.

I liked this, though it did seem rather one paced. Very moody and atmospheric. Enjoyed it as weekend background music
