Reviews (page 5 of 13)

"American indie rock band" usually means I will hate it, but I really enjoyed this one. It kinda has a 70's smooth rock vibe to me, though the vocals and a few songs get dangerously Dylan-esqe a few times. Not so much that it threw off the vibe, but my brain sure as hell perked up in those instances.

Definitely an album I overlooked with several tracks I love

Imala sam prevelika očekivanja, ali i dalje dosta dobro. Red eyes ću i dalje slušati. Malo dylanesque 🤌🏻

It sounds like really drawn out Tom Petty songs. The songs get a little long. But they keep good energy during those longer songs.

not my favourite of their’s but very very good

Thought it was quite solid, enjoyed it but wasn't something I would repeatedly listen

I rather liked this

aina pelottaa tämmöset, hirvittää mutta iloinen yllätys.. heti oli iwbes wibes ibes ibes wibes www www kirjain vittuilee jahas.. tosiaankoja niin että mukava mukavaa miusikkia, pari ongelmaa kuitenkin tulee esiin että ensimmäisexi jos sitä ambienttia aletaan aletaan semmosta moodia niin sanotusti luomaan niin pidetään sitten yll vähän pidempään, antakaa hengittää plis.. ei mitään kolmen minuiutin pikku juttuja antakaa 0minuutin thematic masterpiece selvästi riittää pälli siihen, palikat on ilmeisesti päässä niin miksi pitää. ja toinen ongelma emt, ei oo nii hyvä albumi oikeesti.. siis joku neljä varmaan.. under the pressure

It's a bit repetitive perhaps, but it really doesn't bother me on this one. The album is very chill and pleasant to listen to and feels like some crossover between classic rock and modern indie. Under the Pressure and Lost in the Dream are pretty big hits and feel like the stand outs on this album. I like the whole of it though, even if I wouldn't necessarily seek it out myself. I could listen to their meandering playing for hours.

I really wasn't sure what to expect, but on the whole it was very good. I could definitely hear some 'Springsteen' in there, and also some Bob Dylan influences. I'm planning on a re-listen in a few days time as that is often the best way for me to fully gauge an artist or album.

Loved the sound, loved the album. Not much to say.

Dreamy, atmospheric modern rock with a strong 80's influence. I enjoy the chill, almost shoegazy vibe it has. This one's going on my summer road trip soundtrack for sure.

I love this record. This is very much a record from my early adulthood. An important one for the elder millennial. I love the progressive nature of the songs, it kind of has that Bruce Springsteen anthem / stadium element to it while also being really spacey and kind of psych. I've always felt like this is an artists that I can just kind of vibe with. At its low it can be kind of "vibey" and nice to have in the background, at its best it can blow your mind and get you amped for no reason. Red Eyes is a perfect example of that. So considering those 2 ranges, I think this is a really effective album and well deserving of its spot on the list.

Track one is one of the best long songs I've heard in a while. So moody, beautiful guitars, dreamy atmosphere. Same vibe with 2-3. Track 4 has more of a groovy touch, but still great relations between the instruments. An AMAZING SONG. Wow. 5 continues with the big guitar sound, great keyboard as well. Love the harmonica in the beginning. Track 6 good, although more usual american rock style to it. After a transition track track 8 begins with a great rithem, a bit Cure. Another good song. 9, beautiful classic rock ballad. In reverse, one of the strongest songs in the record to finish it. Beautiful lyrics. Another quality album. Great time.

My kind of modern rock.

Liked this but it didn't particularly take me. Lot better than expected, gave he impression that if I listened to them more I would become a fan

A very interesting album. I can see several references to great artists of the past in the sound of the songs. The lyrics are very beautiful and profound. Call me crazy, but it sounds like a distant cousin of Bob Dylan with great influences from Pink Floyd, singing in a dreampop band. Coo-coo. Anyway, 4 stars sounds good.

Very Radio Paradise. Sounds like two or three familiar artists I can’t quite place. Really like it—giving it a 4 which could have gone up to 5 if I’d had a chance to listen a couple more times.

A beautiful folk-pop album without a clear hit track. 8.7/10

Timelessly great

Very melodic, calming album. Have thoroughly enjoyed.

Is good background music

7/10 I love me some sad boy music, I do. 3-27-2025

Lovely

I really liked this one. I get some Dire Straits vibes from the guitar work.

Lovely stuff….

I have come around on this band so much over the last several years hell fuckin yea brother Best Song: Red Eyes Rating: 8.5/10 Excellent Stars: 4/10

Under The Pressure Is an Amazing opening track. in General, on the record, the longer a song is the better. I'm just a little disappointed by the drumming which is too simular in between tracks. an Ocean in between the waves is the only that caught me by surprise, with its 80s drums. But great record will come back to it for sure

Lush and chill. I've heard a few of their songs before on the radio, back when I used to listen to a radio, and remember liking them then. It's interesting how they incorporate familiar late 70's and 80's guitar sounds and song structures with a more modern atmospheric vibe. Will listen again.

Wow...really, really liked this one. Hard for me to give an album a 5 on its first listen, but this one came as close for me as any that we've listened to.

This was very pretty music. Nice.

This was unexpectedly excellent

Really cool album. I like it.

A fantastic album. Nothing less…

Good Indie Rock

I shamelessly enjoy this. It was easy to get lost in and had me head nodding from beginning to end.

Very good album I never thought I would like the war on drugs but they are a great band

I went to a concert of theirs a couple months ago, I was freezing cold and had a migraine so I laid down on the blanket we brought, and just kinda dissociated to the music, it’s pretty good dissasociating music

I like A Deeper Understanding a lot more than this album, but this is still a solid album. The production and vocals feel comforting

Great Springsteen album

Very atmospheric album I enjoy this kind of music, I can see why someone mind think it’s boring but I see it as moody, and cinematic. My favorite part of this one was for sure the production it was excellent throughout. Favorite Tracks: Under The Pressure, Red Eyes, and An Ocean Between The Waves.

Dreamy Springsteen. The typical WoD blueprint. About as good as Slave Ambient.

Greaat

Never listened to them before and I really enjoyed it. Definitely my style.

After seeing them live again a couple of months ago, I realized how well these songs have stood the test of time, especially when compared to the rest of their repertoire. There's a bit more depth, energy, and tension in these songs than in everything that came after. Additionally, all of their songs tend to be longer and more stretched out than their earlier work, particularly those featuring Kurt Vile. It's not a five-star album because of the slog in the middle.

Like Pink Floyd with Paul Simon or the Dire Straits - very good listen

Lovely, peaceful, sounds familiar?

Favorite Track: Lost in the Dream

Buenas influencias Springsteen, Young sobresalen notoriamente

Wow. This was actually really good. I always thought this band were a lot older than they were, I had heard of them before but I didn’t realise they had releases as soon as 2014. I was very pleasantly surprised by this record. It’s a fun indie album, reminding me of late-season Skins on Channel 4. It has a melancholy sound at times which creates beautiful melodies paired with decent vocals, with a good modern blend of sounds and genres. It kept my interest, despite the length (as usual, I thought one or two songs could have been stricken from the record but I don’t feel too strongly about it to mark it down) and I found it quite an easy album to listen to. The instrumental breaks, such as Haunting Idle, were really good too. It’s a very poignant album, very thoughtful and at times emotional. It reminds me why I love indie rock so much. I’d definitely listen to it again and I’ll be interested in hearing more from this band.

This is good! I instantly fall in love with the sounds. Some of those melodies reminded me of old classic 60s or 70s rock but with brand new dreampop-shoegaze arrangements. This is cool I love it. A solid 4/5.

This was nice

Good solid album for its time. Repetitive but never tiresome. Good vocals and sounds capes.

Dreamt and thoughtful without being pretentious. Some of the best of what 21st century indie can be.

Mellow

What an amazing string of albums! This album does much to me (Under The Pressure! Red Eyes! Burning! An Ocean In Between The Waves!), but in another way, it is also full of filler material in my opinion. It's also not as perfect as the follow-up album.

Similar to Still Corners but with male vocals.

This is basically Wire Train.

Under the Pressure 4.3 Red Eyes 3.8 Suffering 4 An Ocean in Between the Waves 3.7 Disappearing 3.6 Eyes to the Wind 3.4 The Haunting Idle 3.2 Burning 3.4 Lost in the Dream 3.8 In Reverse 3 Score: 3.62

Real elegant stuff. I loved this album when it came out.

Fantastic album

Definitely a slow burn, but a pleasant one. The songs go on and on, and then you realize you’re kind of into it. An Ocean In Between the Waves has a very slow build up and rocks for the last few minutes. I’m enjoying it as an album, but so far there are no singles I would stick on a playlist. Songs are more introspective and long. 3.5 ⭐️

really dreamy I like it

Pretty good

This one was good. The sound of it was nice. 4 stars

S - really like the War on Drugs and have been a fan of this album for some time now!

Dinged a star because the drum tracks are all sooo flat and clearly drum machine.

Great album! Took a while to grow on me but I like it on a summer Sunday afternoon

Great album. 4.3/5 Many stand out tracks … under the pressure, red eyes, an ocean between the waves, burning.

The beauty of this one is high up there.

"An Ocean in between the Waves" war sehr chillig. 4 Sterne

Great album. The band really feels like they have come into their own here.

A warm fuzzy blanket of sprawling, melancholic rock music

Really liked this.

This is indeed a great album. Sonically, it was to me like chicken pot pie, but in a good sense. Kind of heavy, and kind of soupy, but punctuated with some bright peas and carrots. Very comforting.

Really really really liked this. Under the pressure is of course stand out but every song was good in my eyes. Very excited to see them live soon with Sam Fender

Very nice but the songs are a bit long. Standout tracks: Under The Pressure, Red Eyes

Classic arena rock with ambient dream pop tones, distorted vocals and swirling guitar solos. Sounds like a heavily reverbed Paul Simon collaborating with M83, with some interesting sonic textures, warm and repetitive, strumming and pulsing! A more accessible Bob Dylan style vocals echo in such a way that lyrics are rendered obscure, hooks are incidental. At other times it sounds like Bruce Springsteen being produced by Phil Spector, or a less memorable My Morning Jacket. "Burning" transcends the pleasant pulsing familiarity that otherwise makes this album generic indie rock from the early aughts and twenty-teens, though it does remind me of Dancing in the Dark. Considering I associate the War on Drugs with an internet mediated feud with Mark Kozelek of Red House Painters and Sun Kill Moon (that was mostly Kozelek being an aging curmudgeon and tangentially related to competing performance slots at a music festival where Kozelek complained about the volume of their music), but never felt inspired to listen to The War on Drugs before now.

This was a pleasant surprise. A cool chill album to ease into 2025.

I really kinda like this album quite a bit. There is a lot of this album that sounds inspired by that transition 70/80s rock i get vibes of Straits, Floyd, Petty, Springsteen influence with a glimmer of Millennial sheen. One thing this album does well which can be a land mind for be is extendeding an ending a few minutes after the song is done. In the right hands if find it enjoyable and I think they hit that sweet spot. (8.4) ★★★★

I like the overall sound, and I think there's some good tunes here, like "Red Eyes" and "An Ocean Between the Waves", but I feel like it's just too samey overall. By the end, I kind of knew when the next song was gonna sound like before it came on. I thought 4 might be too generous, but knowing the other music that came out in 2014, 4 stars seems appropriate.

A smoggy shoegazey Springsteenish spectacular for a good hour span, this starts off so spiffingly with supercharged widescreen epics like Under The Pressure and Red Eyes. And whilst it is generally strong throughout it does get deeply samey with all the constant smoggy, shoegazey widescreen Springsteenish epics. Still one of the standout releases from 2014 though.

High 4 stars

Psych rock qui prend son temps

Sure it’s not the most groundbreaking original sound, but I enjoyed listening to it a lot. And in the end, isn’t that what it’s about?

kinda chill

Mellow high level background music for me. Like enough words to actually listen to but can also just tune out and enjoy

I love this band. They are kickin it in the background of life, and remind me so much of another band like them, super talented, great songwriting, solid sound of musicians playing tg for more than 20yrs, Turin Brakes/UK - hopefully they'll be on this 1001... so much quality and a soothing sound - War on Drugs are consistent in their sound and I was happy to discover them thru headphones on an LIRR train to Garden City w a friend from 7th grade, years ago (thanks Vicki!) I happily listen to them any day, always glad they're around.

Was cool

With Lost In The Dream, Adam Granduciel and co. have managed to bring Springsteen-esque heartland rock back in style. The more upbeat tracks sound like the perfect accompaniment to a road trip, while the slower cuts lean towards a more somber and contemplative mood. Some of the atmospheric segments may overstay their welcome, but at the same time add to the overall dreamlike vibes of the record. This isn't complicated music, but it does a great job of capturing a feeling of equal parts nostalgia and hopefulness. Highlights: -Under The Pressure -Red Eyes -An Ocean Between The Waves -Eyes To The Wind Lowlights: -Suffering -The Haunting Idle

Had never heard of them. Enjoyed it...pleasing sound but never dull.

Never heard this album before. First listen is really enjoyable, great chill vibe that still moves and sounds interesting. I certainly hear a lot of 80s influence in the music. Will have to listen to it again to see how it resonates, but a solid album I'm glad I've heard.

I’ve never really taken the time to listen to The War on Drugs (even though I love the song “Pain”) and have always felt that I would like them a lot if I did. And after listening to this album, I do! “An Ocean in Between the Waves” really stood out to me, but there’s quite a few great tracks here with some excellent driving guitar riffs and thoughtful vocals. This is a mellow, almost longingly lonely record, but it really encapsulates an “indie” sound that I do enjoy. A great album to listen to while driving, with some definite influence from Bruce & Bob Dylan. A happy new discovery of music I enjoy and an album that I’ll certainly listen to again.

Liked the album opener "Under the Pressure" but it kind of went downhill from there for me. The songs have a dreamy feel to them where all the instruments work together but seldom really stand out. And that's the formula throughout albeit with varying tempos. Additionally, the songs are pretty long averaging around 6 minutes give or take. So if you love this, you are definitely getting your money's worth. I found myself looking forward to the album ending about 45 minutes in... Overall it's not a bad album. There just aren't any songs that moved me. It's a solid 5 out of 10 for me.

I really like this one. Initially I wasn't getting what it was going for, but then it became obvious it was supposed to be larger-than-life Springsteenian rock but for intimate venues rather than arenas. I do love larger-than-life rock music. Key tracks: Under the Pressure Red Eyes An Ocean Between the Waves

Great, not listened before, liked it very much.

solid album, well produced, vocals feel like blend of Paul Simon and Bob Dylan

War on Drugs is one of those bands that I've always been curious about but never took the time to seek out. I guess I've been missing out! They cleared have picked some great influences to emulate and they pull it off well. The likes of Springsteen and Neil Young are here but with a heavy stadium pop/rock sound. I can see taste makers getting very excited about this band and then abandoning them for getting too mainstream. But those are often some of the best bands, able to straddle the line between underground and pop audiences. I also hadn't realised that Kurt Vile was part of this band (though not on this album). 'Lost in the Dream' has been a great find.

Bruce Springsteen combined with Paul Simon. Not as good as either of those, but still really enjoyable

Great guitar sound

I don't think I have heard of this band, but the song Red Eyes sounds familiar. I can't place where I may have listened to it before unless it was a "since you like this music listen to this" addition to the end of queue.

Pretty good, the long songs were good. Some of the more instrumental ones were not that great but enjoyed this one.

7.5/10 - I liked the guitar on a bunch of the songs. Was not expecting it to be as good as it was.

Not usually into this upbeat Americana folk stuff but this was actually pretty good. Enjoyed most of it

4.3 - Okay, there really isn't anything wrong with this album and I really loved listening to it. But I just don't think there is anything challenging in it. It's just really good, but not great.

A very good album, but nothing groundbreaking in the sound palette. Fave Tracks: Under the Pressure, Red Eyes, An Ocean in Between the Waves, In Reverse 4.1/5

Virkelig dejligt album.

Really enjoyed this on a Monday morning. The vocals, guitar, and keys all worked well together and there's a soothing sound to it all. 8/10 (4/5)

This was a great listen - moody, cool guitar, interesting voice but without being overly weird. A bit too depressing to be on regular rotation for me. I liked the Springsteen style guitar and sax combo

I actually quite like this album. I’ve heard some songs before but didn’t recognise the band name. Reminds me of old school American rock, but has some nice indie synth elements

4 sterne

Not listened to this for a while, it still sounds as good as it did when Joe bought it for me one Christmas :) There's far more atmosphere in this than most rock albums, it's a hazy, often gentle atmosphere, sometimes retro but still modern. With long intros and outros it's quite cinematic and is a great album for a car journey. Some great guitar, his voice often sounds like Dylan but works. It works as a complete album but 'Eyes To The Wind' stands out and I have always loved 'An Ocean In Between The Waves', which sounds like a faster, updated, Americanised version of 'A Forest' by The Cure,. I only just noticed that! One of my favourite guitar tracks this century :)

Ethereal

Levon gives it an extra star

Love this album. It’s always on my plane flight list of favorites to chill and listen to while traveling. Good mix of 80s production and grooves. Dig it.

Chill rock, mixing styles, nice in the background.

Excellent all the way through but one of the best bands of the last decade. "Under the Pressure" absolutely slays live and there are four or five other excellent cuts here. One rates A Deeper Understanding a slightly better record overall, but this is a strong and thoughtful and engaging listen. No reason for it to have been exed.

8/10. Ended very well. Loved the instrumental leads into songs.

I’ve always enjoyed this album ever since it was released. Over the last decade I found myself returning to it more than enough times to merit high ratings. And yet strangely it’s still hard to hum or distinguish the tracks. Except of course for “Burning” which is an obvious modern day steal of Rod Stewart’s “Young Turks.” Other influences are also obvious, from Dylan and Petty, to The Waterboys and Orbison. Overall the production is progressive, pleasant and chill, but unfortunately a bit too homogeneous. And yet I will probably still find myself returning to this as the mood calls since it is a really good record still.

I love this album and most of what these guys do. Great live show also

Nice little chill, mostyl instrumental album. Nice one!

Loved the sit although most songs sound like identical copies hahaha

I had never heard of the band or the album so I had no idea what to expect. I ended up enjoying it so I listened to it a second time. It's not particularly memorable music but it's hitting me right. I like the dreamy, gaze off into the distance quality of it and the distinct 80's vibe. Enjoyable background music that I'd listen to again. 3.75/5

Some songs have an 80's vibe that I don't particularly care for, but I can't deny that they're well done. Some of these songs also sound exactly like The Head and the Heart to the point where I had to check Wikipedia to see if there was crossover (the answer is either no or I'm too lazy to find a yes). Anyway, this was a largely enjoyable listen. 3.9

An enjoyable listening experience!!

Pretty good! Passed me by a bit but that’s not uncommon.

I guess it's good but it's kind of boring. Like I wouldn't listen to this on my own. I'm not gonna complain about listening to it at all. Just a tad long and generic.

Not quite what I was expecting from either the band name or the album art, but I enjoyed this. I’m a sucker for this kind of sound and, despite the subject matter, found it oddly relaxing. I’ll definitely listen to this again.

Really liked it! On a 4 streak lately

Lost in the Dream is the third studio album by The War on Drugs, originally released in 2014. I'm familiar with this band but never gave them a listen until now. I'm digging this. They're obviously pretty inspired by 80s indie rock and even some ambient stuff like Eno. A few of these songs delve into these cool psychedelic ambient passages. The vocal delivery reminds me a bit of Tom Petty. The production is super airy and these tracks have space to breathe. It actually reminds me a lot of Turnover's "Peripheral Vision", which would release the following year. This definitely warrants further listens.

mjög gott

Pretty pretty pretty good. I'd listen again, good commute album.

I went into this knowing absolutely nothing about this band and came out being very pleasantly surprised. Disclaimer, at some points it was irritatingly boring HOWEVER I am feeling optimistic today. This was a pretty album that was calming and peaceful and I liked it. His voice sounds youthful- not necessarily young but I like the sound that it brings to the gentle music. I like it a lot!

Kinda a vibe

Good album. Easy listening.

Totally hypnotic in the feeling it creates. The kind of music you play on a train as you travel across the American plains (speaking as a non-yank who has never done that, but this image has a pulling resonance). Chugging drums and a soaring, nostalgic mood. Loved it.

This is just Bob Dylan singing Bruce Springsteen songs with reverb. It is fine, it is very chill but nothing ground breaking or that memorable. Low 4.

Pretty good

Cool. Chill.

Really well made Indierock album by an artist I hadn't heard about before. The songs are easy to listen to and the whole album sets a mood with the first song and gets you stuck in it for the whole album. Definitely some songs I will listen to again.

They rock! They are the kinks, enough said.

Atmospheric, empty but full, echoes. I like the sounds on this album, reminds of "The Division Bell" (positive connotations)

Pretty good

Really enjoyed, all songs quite similar and relatively forgettable, but very chill yet upbeat and would slap on repeat in the background quite happily

Beautiful, atmospheric, sad.

Such a great album with an ethereal sound but really great instrumentals. Great coming back to this.

Great album loved this band

Very fun album. Unique modern sound. 3.6 stars

My favorite album of theirs. I love their sound.

This record is a slow-burn, filled with sweeping guitar work and lush synths. It has a driving, atmospheric feel, like Springsteen meets My Bloody Valentine, but way more introspective. There’s a sense of longing in the lyrics, and the songs drift by in a dreamlike haze. The production is rich, but nothing feels rushed. It’s patient, letting the sound breathe and grow.

I had no expectations or idea what this would sound like. I definitely wasn't expecting modern rock that was clearly inspired by Dylan and Tom Petty. This was a really enjoyable album. From start to finish they did a solid job of making the music interesting and easy to listen to. There were a couple songs that probably could have been cut but not enough to not make this a good album. I will definitely be coming back to this as well as diving deeper into this band. These are the kinds of albums I love coming across since I never would have found this on my own.

Not my type of music but was pretty good 7.3/10

Surprisingly good

I've always loved this one. Seminal for me when it came out. You can really lose yourself in the rich textures of the songs that all build to a frenzied crescendo. A little too long for a 5, I think there's some filler, but the bones of the album are perfect.

Cooler Sound mit starker Stimme

War on a Drugs sounds like of Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen collaborated with the Flaming Lips or something. Cool ethereal sound, but very personal lyrics. Good stuff

I think this is an album that takes longer than a day to truly appreciate, but man oh man does it have promise. Some of the musical riffs were spectacular on the first listen through, then I caught a couple more awesome ones on the second listen. Who knows what I'll find on the 10th listen?

Boring but also real good? I feel like this is the kind of music I would make if I had the ability/time/motivation/ideas/self-belief

I really liked this

#329. I don't know if this was intentionally made to sound like if Tom Petty made new wave, but that's what I'm getting from it. I know I should hate this, but for some reason I don't. 4/5: weird

I like it it's gotta a certain vibe but it's a bit repetitive.

Good album, felt a bit harsh giving 3 stars so went to 4 but that’s a bit generous. Will listen again as think this could be a ‘grower’

It’s a 4 I got this baby on vinle but it’s a first listen. I like it it will grow on me

Under Pressure Red Eyes An Ocean in Between the Waves Eyes to the Wind

Ooh, I like this. I've found a new band to listen to. I hear a definite Bob Dylan influence, especially on 'Eyes to the Wind'.

This album captured something really beautiful

Very nice band. Good songs performed very well.

really strong second half

A more commercial turn from their previous, stellar album Slave Ambient, Lost in the Dream is still a great example of an album which blew a band up majorly, but still wins in so many ways artistically. There’s just too much that feels familiar about The War On Drugs for them not to be huge.

Derivative Dylanesque dad rock. But I’m in the target demographic.

I think it says a lot about this list that even the more recent albums are clearly heavily influenced by music from before the 2000s. Although, given how meh the popular music of 2014 was, I can't blame the book writers for wanting to think about the past a bit. Anyways, this album's alright. It's not the most interesting album ever. I mean, I could certainly name a few more influential and better indie rock albums. But there's clearly quite a bit of talent here. The sound is very pleasant. There's a good blend of acoustic and electric sounds. I like that. The singing is interesting. It's very Dylan-esque at some points. The writing is pretty good. I have some complaints, but they're pretty minor. This album is a bit long and the songs do kind of blend together a little bit. However, this is still a pretty good indie rock album if that's your thing. Fantano gave this a 7 and I kind of agree. So I will round this album up to be a low 4/5.

Although this probably doesn't deserve to be among the best 1001 or so best albums, I still liked it. It's very forgettable, but I remember liking it, and that's all that matters.

Red Eyes earns a fairly uneventful album and extra star

Very vibey, nice for in background

Heavy rotation for years now this one. Love the atmos the songs create. Always thought there was a bit of a loungy Springsteen vocal sound. Might just be me… Finally some good fucking food.

Contemplative in a way I really enjoyed.

Never listened to this band before so sorry it's this comparison offends fans. Like Arcade Fire and Bob Dylan. 4/5

Torn between 4 and 5 stars. Fucking amazing. Listened to it on the way home from a calm evening at dennys. Maybe saving 5 stars for the likes of NMH and johnny cash but this is up there for me. The songs have been in my head all day

lovely

01) Under the Pressure - 8,0 02) Red Eyes - 8,0 03) Suffering - 8,0 04) An Ocean in Between the Waves - 8,5 05) Disappearing - 8,0 06) Eyes to the Wind - 7,0 07) The Haunting Idle - 6,5 08) Burning - 7,5 09) Lost in the Dream - 7,0 10) In Reverse - 7,0 TOTAL: 7,55 (76/100) Current ranking: 119/242 It starts off very interesting, but towards the end I feel like I'm listening to some Bob Dylan wannabe project. And just like Dylan, this album also gets a little tiring.

Researchable! 👌🏽

Pretty compelling, I want to hear more

After the first two songs, there's a big drop off. But: the first two songs are 5 star material, and the rest is still 3-4 star material. I like the general vibe, sort of an ethereal rock and roll.

I really liked this album. A mix of indie, Americana and roots with lovely synth sounds in the mix. Some beautiful songs here and the writing is top notch.

Did I know when one song ended and the next started? No. Are they still one of my favorite bands? Yes.

I like

Pop/Rock, entspannt, melancholisch 4/5

a bit simple for my liking. i do enjoy the mood though. low 7/10

Sets a great mood and sticks to it throughout. If you're languishing, or, oddly, relaxed, this is a great album to put on.

Very good album, combinating some effective tracks with others instrumentally top! Never heard before, surprisingly good

Some really good songs are buried in the sands of some long tracks. This album could’ve been much better leaner if they hadn’t gone too far into the ambiance.

Great album to pop on in the background to lift the mood. Easy listening, radio after was also great

Under the Pressure is great opener, draws you in. Hypnotic, as most of their work. Burning is album highlight. Other strong tracks include Suffering, An Ocean Between the Waves, Eyes to the Wind and the title track. My least favorite songs are Red Eyes, Disappearing and The Haunting Idle.

A lower 4 for me, but still a nice album- was surprised to see it was a 2014 release! No standout singles to me but more so a cohesive and enjoyable project, instrumentally and lyrically. It's the sort of thing I wouldn't have heard if not for this generator! I can see myself revisiting this every now and then- it's not doing anything brand new but it does a great job at capturing an exact feeling (introspective and lonely but not desolate or completely hopeless).

Quite nice. Never heard about them and never heard one of their songs as far as I know so was a nice surprise

What a lovely load of noise. Warm. Tom Petty? Inherently uplifting, natural, with a sense of the freeflowing about it. They have a sound which feels like it inspired a lot of other bands. At points feels a little kurt vile... The long songs not feeling long at all is testament to quality. Suffering is lovely. The solos, the way everyhing blends together. Feels nostalgic, melancholy but sweet. An album that definitely doesnt sound like it was made in 2014, in a good way. The build on Ocean between is great. the echoey, fluid crashing... this feels like road trip music. driving to the beach or something - so summery at it's core. more of a country vibe comes through on eyes to the wind, in a lyrical and musical sense - even vocally. less surfy. I think I want to listen to this album several times. Also feels a bit dylan? Even in the way he sounds on this one. The haunting idle starts so cool, but dissappointed it doesn't develop beyond a nice instrumental. Everything is so dense, there's so much going on in each song! I keep skipping back as I feel I wasn't paying enough attention. The synths on burning feel like a springsteen nod. In reverse's intro gave me goosebumps. I think this is my favourite track. I have a feeling this album will enter into my regular rotation, there's a lot to absorb here!

This was nice. Kind of gave me an old school New Wave vibe.

Never heard of them.

Noodling around the kind of stuff that built up to that one Weeknd song. Wish I hadn't seen someone in the peanut gallery point out that the drums are basically identical on each song, because that person is right and it became really distracting.

I remember this album was heavily talked about when it came out and “Red Eyes” was playing everywhere. I’m definitely a fan of this band but I have to be of a certain mindset to dive in to this ocean of reverbs, synth pads and lush delays, it’s just such a great album to get lost in the wall of sound. There’s so many layers of synths and guitars that it can almost seem like white noise if you don’t lean in and find those intricate melodies and leads below it all. Singer Adam Granduciel always reminded me of a cross between Don Henley and Bruce Springsteen. His songwriting is steeped in nostalgia, loss and isolation. I’m happy to dive back into this one, and looking forward to revisiting their other releases.

Man, this one is great! Thank you, Andy, for telling me about this album. At the time, I was actually going through a personal battle in the War on Drugs. I had been arrested in a sting operation for cannabis, a plant that grows naturally upon the face of the earth. I lost my career, and was having to live off my 401k and work several shitty, low paying jobs just to pay rent. I didn't tell my family or immediate support system, and my father passed away (a couple weeks before my hearing!), so any hope of financial assistance was not possible. I would sit, drunken in my car, and blast this first track, crying my eyes out. That was almost 10 years ago, and all is well now. All charges have been dropped, or "conditionally discharged", and FUCK the police and the state. This album means a lot to me. Red Eyes is on my trivia host playlist, so it gets regular play. Hard to pick a favorite on this one, but I'm glad it popped up on here. I guess An Ocean In Between...

Gorgeous music. I love how their songs have a driving, forward momentum. Something about those steady, chugging drums and the big echoing guitar tones. The songs feel like a speeding train. Or maybe a car on an open highway. This would be a great road trip album. Something you can put on while the miles melt away. The lead singer sounds like Bob Dylan, if Bob Dylan fronted a stadium rock band. The songs feel big and they take their time and stretch out. They feel designed for arenas.

Very cool start, with hihats that start syncronously and then very quickly phase out into a cicada-like chirp. I've heard of this band, I've seen this album cover (many times), but I don't recall enjoying the music like I am now. In fact, this intro of the first song sounds exactly like something I would really love. The singers got kind of a Paul Simon voice at times? It's cool. Then on track 2 it's got a Bruce Springsteen 80's sound. I'm really surprised that I never listened to this band as I've heard of them for years- maybe it was the name that threw me off. Regardless, this is a solid album that I really enjoyed.

Never heard of them before. Really enjoyed the album and now added to my favourites on Deezer.

Ah, take a deep breath. That is fresh air. I do not know how The War on Drugs had escaped my notice up til now. I have now been exposed to many new style and genres through this project, but one place I will always find a home is with Indie artists. Just something about the moody, flowing, graceful feel...

This album is really good, love the atmosphere, and at times it is very catchy. Only real problem I have is that the songs all seemingly last forever, I was kinda waiting for it to end already by the 40ish minute mark

This was my second time listening to this album, and I enjoyed it just as much as the first time. I remember my initial reaction was that it sounds like “Tom Petty” in today’s culture as an indie rock artist. Overall, this album is a perfect blend of Heartland Rock, Indie Rock, with a little bit of Neo-Psychedelia. I’ve only heard this one album, but I definitely plan on listening to more from them. It’s a smooth and easygoing album that you can play on just about any occasion.

Such lovely toons

In my personal collection on vinyl. Already one of my favorites. Under Pressure is a stand by classic by the band as is Disappearing later on the album. Red Eyes is another strong song early on this album. The melodic sounds are unique but do remind of certain feelings of the band The Cure as in the Mixed Up album variety. The use of a drum machine is a constant but it won’t get you out on the dance floor. When this album slows down, it really sleepwalks at a snail’s pace. Does he sing like Bob Dylan a little? I never bought a second album from this band but I never regretted buying this album and go back to it frequently. I think anyone would appreciate the unquestionably unique sound they’ve created here.

I'm a casual fan of this band. I listen to an album and then forget what it sounds like until I listen to it again. This is good. Moody. Atmospheric. Layered. But not memorable.

Reminds me of a modern day Bob Dylan. Pleasant listening today

Great work music. More mellow than I thought they would be.

Somber and sweet lyrics / melodies. Very timeless sounding. 3.6

I was unaware of this album or band when the algorithm served up LOST IN THE DREAM. After hearing the album and reading about their influences, I feel like this is one of those albums that far surpasses the influences on the band that released it. My favorite tracks were "Red Eyes", "An Ocean in Between the Waves", "Burning", and "In Reverse". A beautiful set of tracks about despair, isolation, introspection, and possibly even a hint of hope.

My first thought I hear when an album claims to be able to synthesize so many different musical influences at once is that it's going to be really unfocused and lack any real direction. This album is the exception to that rule. It's able to take so many diverse influences and still sound like something completely unique. I can hear a lot of Springsteen, Tyler Petty, and Neil Young in here but it also sounds like very much their own idea. I don't know if it does anything new or innovative in its own right but I give it a lot of credit for making it sound like you just listened to an entire decade of rock music in an hour.

A lot of nice songs

Pretty good stuff. Nice and relaxing easy listening.

I've always had mixed feelings about the War on Drugs. I've always dug their vibe, but it's somewhat one-dimensional. Each album seems to present a prominent leitmotif that is repeated ad infinitum across songs that run just a little too long. But the soundscapes presented remain lovely; I always say their stuff feels like curling up in a ray of sun. It's perfect for background listening, but is a little less engaging when focused. It feels a little like a dream, really, making for a fitting album title. I may have given this album 3 stars, were it my first listen, but this album has been with me since it released in my early years of university, and whether it has grown on me or whether I'm nostalgic, I couldn't give this less than 4 stars.

Really chill album that has enough variety between tracks to create a dynamic experience.

aaA really good album, I like the textures and the lyrics.

This album feels like it is specifically targeted to people with drug addictions to help pull them out of that dark place. While I can thankfully say that I can't relate, I can feel the power of the message nonetheless. Typically I wouldn't enjoy an album this depressing but it is simultaneously peaceful and uplifting.

That was very good, I enjoyed

Loved An Ocean In Between the Waves. Sitting in a big chair wrapped in a blanket, drinking tea and watching the rain kinda mood. Guitars are great, like the piano as well - his voice gives me early Bryan Adams vibes.

Me gustaron.

Honestly, this has a great chill vibe. Absolutely would put this on in the background and go about my business, whether it's chores, socializing, or just snuggling up with a book. There are lyrics, but they are just sounds. Essentially not much different from the occassional guitar lick.

Just having a brilliant time of it in the last little while. I love everything about this album. It wears its influences really clearly, with The Boss and even Bob very easy to spot throughout. Musically, it's just got a lovely vibe to it that's ambient but never dull. I'd totally forgotten about this album, but looking back I'd rated it as my number one album of 2014 (yes, keeping those rankings to hand is totally normal, yes). Misses out because while it's great, it's not particularly original, so can only get as close to a five as the system will let me get, without giving it the top marks.

Dreamy. Quiet. Listen to it while wrapped in a blanket reading a book & falling asleep to the rain.

- Richtig cooler, unaufgeregter, melancholisch-entspannter Indie-Rock - Ich fühle mich zeitweise an Tom Petty erinnert. Teilweise an Sam Fender. Manchmal soagr an Ben Howard.

Modern Springsteen

Really good. Saved the first 5 songs. Definitely a mellow album but delivers on basically every song.

Love this record, great wide-screen indie rock

Pretty depressing, but I love to put it on when I'm feeling down and tired from work. Certainly a 4-star album if I've ever heard one.

I would have liked some drugs for this album, it was chill and atmospheric . Lots of vibes, definitely would have been nice to listen to from a bean bag with a lava lamp rather then on the central line I’d never heard anything from the band before but I did loose interest a bit during the middle and can’t really remember anything from it

Under the pressure - excellent opening track. I like the 8'52" duration. Immediately sounded like the Waterboys. Red Eyes - vocals remind me of Springsteen, yet soft music. Good track Suffering - bit too slow and boring An Ocean... - too mainstream pop Disappearing - interesting enough Eyes to the Wind - very Waterboys. Not a bad thing Burning - best track

I’m hearing Roxy…Eno…and others through out this album. I could listen to this album as the last music of the day.

Such a wonderful dreamy vibe. I’ll be checking out more of their stuff

Great! Found myself enjoying a lot of this even if some of it sounds similar to each other Favorite Tracks: Red Eyes, Burning

Great sound, really chill

I like this album, it's a steady listen and definitely is on the stereo from time to time when i'm in the right lo-fi mood.

Enjoyed listening to this album

Takes me back to college, I found this album pretty late (2017ish) but it was definitely influential. I don’t know if I would’ve been as receptive to it when it had come out. Will be interesting to listen again after several years. I still love the ambiance and the ethereal textures. Combined with the looped drums and trance inducing bass make for some great music to get lost to. The overall structures of the song holds everything together from getting to out there. Some of these songs do the 80's soft rock thing way better than anything from the actual 80's. So much fun.

Under The Pressure – 4.5 Red Eyes – 4.5 Suffering – 4 An Ocean In Between The Waves – 4 Disappearing – 4 Eyes To the Wind – 4 The Haunting Idle – 4 Burning – 4.5 Lost In The Dream – 4 In Reverse – 4.5 Average – 4.2 Took a while for me to enjoy this one but becomes quite nice and psychedelic-sounding after a while 👍 Requires patience tho

Lost my review. Heartland rock with a most atmospheric approach, making for a beautifully charming album.

Unreal and dreamy.

Goede Indie muziek, niks mis mee, maar blaast me niet omver.

listened to again dreamy and somehow americana

A great mesh of modern and 80s rock/pop. Singer is like Bob Dylan if Bob Dylan was good. Enjoyed the faster paced songs a lot more than the slower ones. Overall super solid album that flowed very nicely. 8/10

Cracking album. Well worth sticking with and then it'll be hooked into your brain.

Amazing. Love this album.

Prima luisterplaatje.

I definitely heard the bob dylan influence and thought of kurt vile before even reading the wiki. I agree with the idea that they merge a lot of rock genres. Some really beautiful songs.

Kind of a modern Police/Paul Simon vibe. Really into it.

Such a vibe!

Ganz nett und tut nicht weh

When it first started playing, I thought it was yet more 90's-ish blah rock. But sticking with it, they do have some really good songs and production. Saving for further listening.

Really like this band. Nice mellow background tunes

Reminds me of "the killers". In a good way.

I liked it

Chill rock.

Ah great. Love this and it's great to have another album from the last.. Wait. This is from 2014? Oh god, I've lost another ten years of my life. 4.5 🌟 for the album, 1 🌟 for the accelerating passage of time.

good stuff. they sure do love that don henley “boys of summer” drum beat

What can I say about this, is it original? No, is it great? Again no. But it is nice to listen to and that is important. So 4 stars.

Took me a few tries to get thru this album, but on the successful attempt, I was grooving to Red Eyes. Not totally sure where to place this in terms of genre - it's accessible and varied, but not the most distinctive.

I already liked The War On Drugs, knew some of these songs but never listened to the full album. Some great tracks on it

man this pretty good if you ask me

This is a good album

Mellow and easy to listen to.

Fun listen. I can get why people think it's boring and it is a little long but all in all, a solid album.

I’m very particular when it comes to slower songs/artists but this surprised me, big fan of most tracks and their instrumentals. Still seem to struggle with this rating system with it only being out of 5 so will have to round the high 3 to a 4

Underrated band, can hear the Dylan influence in the frontmans vocals and the instrumental solos are magnificent

Yeah, I thought this was cool!

Lost in the Dream is the third studio album from the indie rock band The War On Drugs. The songs on the album tell stories about loneliness and depression that Adam Grandeciel experienced while touring. The band is heavily influenced by Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Tom Petty, and their work has tracks that could have come from any of these artists. Grandeciel has a distinct, expressive voice, and his songs contain vivid expressions of the experiences of his life.

Seems perfect for just vibin. Little gripe is that the songs are very long (generally a good thing) and sometimes feel like they don't really go to something. Also missing maybe a bit of variety. Notes: - There's Bari Sax and tons of Reverb/Delay - Singing feels a bit "Bob Dylan"-esque - "Under The Preasure" really opens up to the end - "Suffering" starts of a bit more clear/minimalistic - "An Ocean Between The Waves" also start a little clearer and has good buildup - "Disappearing" surprise harmonica, when it widens up and great e-piano sound - "Eyes to the Wind" interresting opening - "The Hunting Idle" to "Burning" sealess transition and buildup continues - "In Reverse" Ending rounds up the album pretty well

This album is very relaxing to listen to. Pleasant sounds.

very psychedelic rock. good experience from start to finish. fav track: Eyes To The Wind

Absolutely brilliant. This came up he same week I’d realised it had been a while since I put this on. Love the band and this is their best album.

Never heard of this band, but they are nice to just have on. While listening to them I heard little bits and sprinkles of so many other artists like Tom Petty and Bob Dylan to The Killers, U2 and beyond. There were probably a dozen times I was reminded of something else for just a second to get a nice sense of comfort then kept on enjoying the jams and discovering something great. It probably helped that I'm just in a good mood overall, but this is definitely a band I'll be coming back to. As I was listening tonight, I just had it on while cooking and stuff so I don't know specific tracks much towards the end, but I liked most of what I heard. Probably should be a 5 tbh Favorite track: "Red Eyes" 4.4/5

This was quite good, easy to listen to, and very chill, easy to work to.

I was already a fan of the band and this album is another stellar contribution to their discography.

Needed a long time to like them but after every platform making me listen, I really do 😅

it is a cool sound and I enjoyed some tracks but is a bit slow paced and the songs can drag a little bit

This album is a very nice surprise. I had not previously heard of the album or artist, but I like it a lot. It is atmospheric and uplifting. I will come back to this.
