Reviews (page 6 of 13)

Sounds like Bob Dylan with laid-back Dire Straits as backing band. Love it!

I like the group and all. Still maybe a little bit too homogeneous music with barely any difference from song to song and album to album

It's like if Tom Petty and the heartbreaker's made an album in the style of death cab for cutie. I'll probably listen to them again

I confidently told my wife to play this album during our game of scrabble this afternoon. Promising ‘you’ll love this’. She switched to ‘her choice’ before the end of track 1. 4.4

Die Inspiration durch Springsteen, Neil Young etc. merkt man. Angenehm zu hören.

While listening to this album I just am imagining the puffs of smoke at the music festival. Very mellow vibes, invokes summer and modern day Americana.

Liked this one a lot. Listen again

Liked the sound of this. I could listen to it some more.

Banger, a little slow sometimes

Great album - production and musicianship

Dire Straits vibes. Except for "Burning," which is 100% a Bruce Springsteen song.

Cool lul vibe or whateva

Il y a un aspect vraiment dreamy qui est très agréable dans plusieurs chansons. Les mélanges d'influences sont vraiment intéressantes. Mais à un certain point l'album s'épuise un peu. 7/10

Never heard of this group. Interesting music, I enjoyed listening.

Beautiful album

First listen. Dreamy indie rock. I like it.

I'm into it. The lead singers voice is almost like Bob Dylan. I like the sound and the general chill vibe. Never heard them before, might go listen to other albums and put them in my mix.

ohhh, a modern album.

Liked Under the Pressure, and I might want to learn some of the guitar from An Ocean in Between the Waves

its good if you like the war on drugs. I have tried and appreciate them, even paid money to see them live, i just am not really a fan.

I had never heard of this band. I enjoyed this album so much that I went on to listen to most of their albums. I just wish the singer wasn't trying so hard to sound like Dylan, of all people.

I enjoyed this album. He's got a great voice and many of the songs are "easy listening". I added a couple of the songs to one of my playlists. I'd rate this up at 4.5 if we had that option

Awesome album. Really good vibes. Vocal was muddy but it almost worked as if it were just another instrument in an instrumental album. good stuff

like good kinda like sweater weather vibes?? update: it’s definitely indie/mitski type

Clean sound reminiscent of Al Stewart to me. Easy to listen to, good best, could listen to while driving, chilling erc

So good

The songs are really good but they are super long and I honestly got bored after a while. They’d be good background music.

Amazing album

Relaxing and mild

was pretty chill. I like it :3

Decent 8/10

Slow, straight, and peaceful. Kind of a monotone album so no track really stands out but the overall feeling is nice.

the instrumental on disappearing i feel like i'm ascending. overall i liked this album a lot, but tbh a lot of the songs blended together and they were so long. sorry i think i have a tiktok attention span now unfortunately

This album is a dreamy ride into the sunset.

A solid, nice, alternative rock record

Pretty solid album. It was consistent throughout, started and ended well. My faves were Under The Pressure and The Haunting Idle.

Derivative to the max, but I loved the 80s so it feels like an undiscovered gem. Favourite: Under The Pressure.

Dreamy. Nice album

Hard to rate. On the one hand it all sounds the same, on the other the way it all sounds is super chill.

Never listened to them before but really enjoyed this!!

Love this album, had it in the standard rotation for years. Great music to dream off to. I do often tend to zone out as the album progresses.

I had to google \"The War On Drugs is Bob Dylan meets Bruce Springsteen\" and sure enough I get: \"The War on Drugs still sounds like Bob Dylan fronting the Heartbreakers while playing Bruce Springsteen songs with an epic Pink Floyd quality. As mentioned above, the influences are obvious.\" Very accurate! Sounds like something I'd love... but there's something about it that's just not sticking for me... there's like a try-hard unauthentic bland quality to it. It's like slightly watered down mix of those bands. I wish the drums were better, the vocals more passionate. Still, giving it a 4... 3.5 rounded up maybe. It might grow on me, I just wish I liked it more immediately. I think it’s mostly the vocals that seem cheesy.

A rich sound suffused with energy, melodic and varied in timbre but still rooted in a pretty down-to-earth style. I'm surprised I've never heard of this band before, what a pleasure to hear them now. Eyes to the Wind is a *fantastic* track.

Great album, balances sounds grand and intimate, retro and new, joyful.and melancholy, all at the same time.

Some really good Americana vibes. I do have a love/hate relationship with vocalists in this genre, as I often feel like they sing in a way that hurts the quality of the music. For the most part, though, this avoids the poor quality sound. This is just a really good Americana album. Maybe the best I've ever heard in this genre? But there's not really much competition for "Best of Americana".

Nice dreamy indie vibe. The guitar especially screams indie. I like it even though I'm yet to form a more profound opinion.

Thoughts before listening: One of my favorite albums of the past decade. It sounds like 80s roots rock ala Dire Straits or Tom Petty with great guitar work. Basically the epitome of dad rock...so in other words right up my alley. Review: This is an album where a few songs are so good that it doesn't really matter if all the tracks aren't on that same level. In this case Under the Pressure, Red Eyes, and An Ocean Between the Waves are 3 of the best rock songs released in my adult years. I absolutely love them. I have long been obsessed with a KEXP radio performance they did around the release of this album where the DJ got emotional while they played these songs. Its just such a perfect throwback sound to 80s style rock, but with a guitar approach that makes it feel new and vital. That being said, this is not a 5-star album to me. There are a lot of long, slower paced songs that tend to drag at places. These are well written songs with nice melodies and interesting guitar work, but they just don't have the same effect as the bangers.

such a dreamy, 'fuzzy bruce springsteen' vibe. Been revisiting this one often since it came out.

They have never been on my radar but wow I really, really liked this album. Prime indie rock. Made me a fan.

12/5. More white dudes

Great album for reading or homework!

Ja fantastisch man

Ja echt wel heel verrassend. Groot fan

Music to drive with

I really like the atmospheric vibes on this album. I think it makes it stand out quite a bit as an indie rock album. It gives me like 80s vibes but with that dream pop tinge. The songwriting doesn't really captivate me as much as I wished though. Rating: 7.9/10

Red eyes was a jam in high school and still is

Awesome album!

I loved the chilled out style of the tracks however a lot of the album blended into one for me so only the first 2 tracks really stood out to me

Really enjoyed it even though its feels like the muzak version of depressing shoegaze indie rock. Very good to listen too while doing other things - and I mean that as a compliment.

Dreamy, listened twice

Groovy tunes. Very much pre-grunge and channelling some great riffs. A good listen for a relaxing day.

Interesting. Really like track2

If you'd told me that an album meant to sound like an 80s album was released in 2014, I would not have predicted that it would have sounded like this, nor that it would be this good. The album has a very Springstein vibe that really works. All the little 80s sounds are here, and integrated perfectly. It doesn't even make a lot of sense, yet it works really well 4/5

Low end of 4 stars for me. Really nice sound, very much enjoyed it, no real standout songs though. Nothing really grabbed me.

Really liked the sound of this one

It’s not that anything stands out, really (with the possible exception of Under the Pressure), but I found myself thinking “that’s a nice one!” for every track. Nice one, TWOD.

Solid, nothing new but does what it does exceptionally

very chill. fun to listen to

Band I've never listened to but have heard a few songs by them. I really liked it and would listen to them again.

Lush, Celtic and melodic instrumentation - this band have been a real testament that new music is alive and well in the 21st century. Though from Philadelphia, “Under the Pressure” evokes from the off the spirit of The Waterboys and Hothouse Flowers. The pace might pick up with “an ocean in between the waves” but even then, the guitar is more U2 than anything east coast indie. But then we are back into a warm, comfortable blanket wrapped around us with a mug of steaming coffee looking out over the misty hills in the distance. This is where this album takes me. The sonic landscapes of over the hills and far away.

If Bruce Springsteen teamed up with Big Country, it would sound something like this. I say that in a nice way, because it works. They sound like a band that would be good to watch live.

Album génial ! Me prendra surement encore un temps avant d'apprécier complètement l'album à cause du fait que les sons sont long et donc je ne les ai pas tous écouté attentivement.

Had this album on repeat when it came out

It's not as striking as some of the other entries on the list, but this album grows on you after a few listens

just the right amount of bruce

HATED the first 30 seconds of this album, enjoyed the rest of it though

Melodic.

Better than I expected. Very cohesive

Not bad, but not my favorite. I'd listened to like 2 war on drugs songs before this, and this album sounded just like them. Still pretty decent tho

Dreamy. I dig these dudes. I’m familiar with this album but not their other albums. Definitely inspired to explore more. Adam Granduciel graduated from Dickinson College (my alma mater)…fine arts major.

This was simply a well crafted, enjoyable album, if a bit gloomy. Melodic, melancholy and dreamy. Adam Granduciel's vocal reminds me of Paul Simon at times, although musically and lyrically this album owes a lot to Bruce Springsteen. The general vibe also suggests work from Henley, Knopfler, even Bob Dylan. I could have used a little more variety from song to song, but this was really excellent. Fave Songs: An Ocean in Between the Waves, Lost in the Dream, Red Eyes, Burning, Disappearing, Under the Pressure

Heard of em but never listened. Monday morning enjoyed it.

Ethereal Favourite tracks: Under the Pressure, Red Eyes, An Ocean…, Burning

This blends elements of Americana with neo-psychedelia, and it is absolutely beautiful. My favorite parts are definitely when it leans more into the latter, but the parts led more acoustically are just as good. Every part of why I love Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is also why I love this album. Most songs on this are above 5 minutes in length, and I found that they often took their time in developing a song and slowly building to something great. An Ocean in Between the Waves is a perfect example of what I mean. And truthfully, I never found myself tired of a particular song because it went on for too long. Under the Pressure is nearly 9 minutes long. But what an amazing opening track it is. That is how you properly start an album off. Rating: 8/10

Nice and mellow

Fantastic record. Built for driving on open roads. Songs are probably too long but it does add to the grand feel.

Cool album. Used it as background music for writting a physics assignment, was really nice to have on

it's a nice, quiet album. reminds me of wilco. kinda wish there was some tracks that were a bit more uptempo but I can see that's not what adam granduciel was aiming for in the album

Love this album. Have listened to it before and turned out to be the first one on my list!

My first wod album. Impressed with the sound. Will try a few others

Mostly great album, has a couple pretty skippable tracks. Nice ethereal indy rock sound. Very high production value, and the album as a whole is a quite lovely concept.

Like Dylan and Springsteen had a baby and added some prog.

This hit a lot of my sweet spots. Faux 80s rock like the Killers or Arcade Fire or 80s Bruce Springsteen with a more shoegazey sound. I didn't know them at all before this other than they were a bit of a 6 music sacred cow but I will definitely keep an eye out for them now.

Great album. I knew the first couple songs, which are awesome. The album goes down slightly after that, but us fairly consistent.

I like this. Super cool and relaxing. Listened to it on a long drive today but have plucked songs from this album over the years for various camping playlists and such. Really timeless sound

This is an excellent album.

These guys are pretty good and I'm into their sound, but the songs sort of bleed into each other. The album is too consistent track to track, could use a couple change ups to keep it interesting.

Mellow but good vibes, and entertaining enough to keep listening. Red Eyes is a great song, I’d add that to my regular rotation. 3.5 stars. So rounded up. 4 out of 5.

Love this band. Love this album. Some slowdowns undercut the triumphant highs hit on songs like “red eyes.” The second half meanders a bit but not enough to drag down the whole project.

Absolutely superb ! An album that you can have on throughout the day that has a really warming touch. Eyes to the wind is a banger.

Levyn nimen mukaisesti unenomaista ja kaiken kaikkiaan hienoa nyky-indietä. 4/5

Ah... the summer of 2014. New house, watching the World Cup (including that 7-1 game) projected on to the wall, BBQs every night. All soundtracked by this album.... Nostalgically it would be 5/5 but musically I'm going to take it down a notch because listening on a drizzly September morning 9 years later when things are 'not quite' so rosy it doesn't hit in quite the same way...

Red Eyes es una gran canción. De todos los discos de inspiración folk en este listado, éste es el que más me gusta

listened to this a lot in early undergrad. Good sound but a bit samey - 4 stars

I liked this album, singer sounded a little like Bob Dylan.

I’m thankful every time I listen!

Album 140 of 1001 The War on Drugs - Lost in The Dream Rating : 4 / 5 Favorite Track : Eyes to the Wind I've seen many comparisons to Dylan's 'Blonde on Blonde' and also to Don Henley. This is one I'll have to come back to. Good music. None of the songs grabbed me hard, initially, but the music I heard was pretty nice. This has something to offer but haven't put my finger on it, yet. It's a peaceful listen. May be a little more than it first seems. Our favorites don't become favorites the first time we listen....usually.

This album reminds me of a coming of age movie where the character gets heartbroken or goes through some traumatic experience. An Ocean in Between the Waves is giving A-Ha Take On Me vibes.

Really good. Definitely a fan of this one.

4.5/5. I ask myself this question with every band from the 21st century, why the hell did it take me so long to listen to this album? This record is no different.

Great chill atmospheric album. Love listening to this again.

Wow. I think I've just discovered a new favourite band. This does wear its influences on its sleeve with a bit of Dylan, Bruce and Wilco. Its ace. Laid back tuneful tracks with some Eno noodlings. Take a 4 my friend.

A lush, lovely album that reminds me of late-career Jars of Clay mixed with Bruce Springsteen. The songs linger a little longer than I’d prefer at times, but I can’t really fault an album called Lost in the Dream for indulging in sprawling instrumentals. This album feels like it’s exactly what it wants to be and I like that about it.

Great guitar work, lovely atmosphere, but sometimes a little too slow. I like this band and their album after this, A Deeper Understanding, is better imo.

Not really my thing most of the time, but better than 3 stars.

delicinha um tico longo demais

Love the vibe and atmosphere it put me in. Will def come back to it again

enjoyed it a lot and definitely sense the Springsteen influence. I would rate 4.5

Fín plata. Dálítið tímalaus tónlist. Mjög gott.

Using the new scoring system: 4 points. I am struck by this album. Love 2022 song. How did I midd this album? 2013-2014. Busy times. 4 stars for sure. I love The War On Drugs.

This is one that I've listened to a couple of times now, and it's definitely growing on me. Sounds like the album you'd get if Arcade Fire replaced their singers with Bob Dylan. I'm enjoying it more and more with each listen, but there are definitely some weaknesses to it: the songs are all a bit drawn out (Arcade Fire do similar but not to the same extent as this), and the vocals aren't as strong or as striking as Arcade Fire. I think in a few months time (if I keep listening) this will be an easy 4, so we'll give it the benefit of the doubt now and stick it in that category.

This album is a solid midtempo soft alt. I really liked An Ocean In Between The Waves. The songs stretch out for days, so its easy to zone out in the middle of something. Eyes To The Wind has big Bruce meets Bob energy. In fact that is a nice summation of the whole album. I don't really dig the Americana sound but sure its nice.

Own on Vinyl

J'ai trouvé ca très bon, très les chansons sont bien travaillé mais des fois un peu longue on se perd. Il n'y a pas de mauvaise chansons à mon souvenir. 4

Another album I wish I could give half stars to. It’s better than good, but not quite great. The driving, dreamy Dylanesque sound is wonderful, and there are some truly fantastic songs like Red Eyes, An Ocean in Between the Waves, and Burning. This album is just about fifteen minutes too long, and really drags at a few points.

I really like the layered guitar sound and distant, dreamy vocals. Unfortunately, the album is uneven and sometimes it sounds like powered-up Dylan (that's not a compliment). It's not the most important thing, but the cover is great. It's very fitting to the music and the title.

Beautiful love the production and the instrumentals used in the songs. Great way to start the 1001 album generator

This is what it feels like to be young and growing up. What an incredible album. First two tracks in particular blew me away. -1 star though because all songs are quite similar so as an album after track 4 it fails to deliver something new.

I don't usually like this style of rock. I usually find it really boring, but I liked this album more than I thought I would. I think that was mainly because of the lyrics, which were amazing. They were a bit cryptic at times, but were just really beautifully written, and the messages were really deep, meaningful and inspirational. There were several lyrics that just hit me in the gut because of how strongly they resonated with my life at the moment. I just wish it was stronger musically- there are pretty ambient sounds and all, but overall, the production and melody writing just feels really samey and directionless. I wasn't a fan of the drumbeats which sounded quite robotic (quite common in this style of music). Also the vocals left a lot to be desired for me. I'm glad I read the lyrics because otherwise the overly pretentious vocals would've been all I noticed. I just wish the singer could've invested the lyrics with the power and emotion they deserve, rather than putting on indie airs and trying to sound like Dylan. Nothing wrong with Dylan, but here, the imitation of his style felt pretentious. Not sure if I'll listen again, but I'm glad I got to hear these lyrics at exactly the right time. Favourite songs: An Ocean In Between the Waves, Eyes to the Wind

Not everyone's cup of tea, I've heard it referred to as Beer Rock, or Don Henley covering The Killers, but I like The War on Drugs. Love the dreamy quality the mix provides, his voice is unique and not perfect. Overall I dig this album.

This band is just incredible. I just don’t hear them on the radio. That being said I don’t really listen to a radio station that would play them. I hear a lot of Dillon in his voice. It was a good album.

Listened Before? No This is one of those modern indie darlings that I have heard so much about, but have never been compelled to listen. Opens with a driven piano + drum led track with a spacey aura about it. Vocals are dusty and dowsed in echo. I get Tom Petty vibes for some reason. Red Eyes brings the synth a bit more forward, but carries a similar spaciness and driven nature. Suffering is a sprawled out ballad. Really enjoy the atmosphere and guitar noodling. Same can be said for Disappearing. I can get lost in songs like these. The Haunting Idle is an atmospheric instrumental. Perfect for letting the fog settle in. This album was a little long, but was a cohesive listen and I did not mind being wrapped in its atmosphere for an hour. Production is very clean with most songs sharing a particularly spacey / dusty atmosphere. This was a nice listen and I should really make a point to dive into more of their catalog. Strong 4 / 5 Added to Library? Yes

Loved the layered sound. Moody, melodic, and strangely at times uplifting melancholy. I’d listen to this again. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Quite good - I have never given this bad a listen but I really liked it. Very consistent all the way through.

Melancholic indie rock. Overall a consistent album, almost to the point of the songs being indistinguishable (especially the drum parts). But also easy to press play and sit back. Standouts: Red Eyes; Burning; Eyes to the Wind; In Reverse. 4/5.

Dreamy and pleasant. Very nice.

Klasse rock, moderne, blunder lidt forskelligt, men fedt lydunivers

Great album, would recommend. Seeing them live is cool too

Great alternative album. Guitar shreds, keyboard slaps, and the voice is great. Has a lot of highs in the beginning and end, and is solid throughout.

Some albums just have the sound of the horizon inside them. One listen is enough to make us want to leap to our feet, jump into a car and drive into eternity, the music pulsing up through the ground and carrying us on. “Born to Run” is one of these, as are “Highway to Hell” and “Full Moon Fever”. “Lost in the Dream” is another. It has the open road carved into its grooves, adrenaline coursing through its veins. It demands an all-American road trip, which is unfortunate for me because I’d be stuck in the UK, trying to find the biting point and cursing all the dickheads on the London circular. With his band The War on Drugs, Adam Granduciel has spent years honing in on a single mood of music: arena-ready Americana for introverts. His signature sound fuses glistening, driving drum beats, oceans of guitar drenched in feedback and reverb, and wistful, distant vocals delivering timeless generalities: journeys, suffering, sunrise, sunset. He arguably came closest to perfecting this mood of music in his third album, 2014’s “Lost in the Dream”. Ten tracks over sixty minutes, it’s expansive, epic, and life-affirming in its best moments. “Red Eyes” is a perfect fusion of jubilation and melancholia: the biggest hit here, and arguably the album highlight. Later, when “An Ocean Between the Waves” climaxes, and the lead guitar cascades over a barely decipherable vocal, it’s transcendent. Elsewhere, “Burning” glows with the fire of a new dawn, and the mid-tempo “Eyes to the Wind” aches with an otherworldly yearning (“I’m a bit run down here at the moment… there’s a stranger living in me”… beautiful words). Most successful when at its widest in scope, the album unfortunately isn’t quite flawless. I find “Suffering” and “Disappearing” bring the pace down without adding anything particularly interesting or insightful: they’re just downbeat, unwieldy palate cleansers before the next main courses. Graduciel’s proclivity towards extended feedback loops can also become a bit wearisome: if three minutes at the end of the opening track isn’t enough, we later get a three minute instrumental (“The Haunting Idle”) of howling noise, padding out the run time more than necessary. I’d only add that I consider “A Deeper Understanding” an even better album than this one, and feel upset that it isn’t included in the 1001 Club. However, this is still a darn good dream to get lost in.

Under the pressure is very vibey, gives me "running down a dream" vibes but a little more chill Red Eyes is the perfect song to stare out the window to Suffering - I think this is indicative of the whole album, but especially in this song, they just turned the reverb ALL the way up damb

Very enjoyable indie music right up my alley. Full of reverb and bring guitars. Will definitely listen again

Interesting instrument choices, fun listen

Completely new to me - The Boss inspired Indie rock with an 80's/dreamy tinge. I like the way the songs linger on, some parts are really beautiful. Favorite was An Ocean In Between The Waves.

chill listen

This was actually really nice

Good album! very listenable. Almost a 5.

Dire Straits and Gerry Cinnamon vibes. Reverb-y.

An overwhelming sense tragedy, paired with tranquil notes and a hopeful finale, make an intensive listening experience.

Usually not a fan of mood changes between first/second half of the album but this one goes from more intense indie rock to mellow/instrumental in quite a nice way. Favourite track: An Ocean Between the Waves

I was hyped for this but found myself not enjoying it as much as i thought I would. At its worst it is pretentious and samey. But then after work and a few beers I walked home in the sun, spring was here, listening to "Eyes to the wind" and I loved it. Sometimes The war on drugs hits just right with its atmospheric "wall of noise" approach. I think you can cherry pick the hits from this album as listening from the start to end was just a bit much. Still a 4 from me, albeit a weak one.

I know of this band but couldn't tell you anything they've done. -Under the pressure- Man, this is good. This is kinda my jam. Little hints of some Tom Petty meets Bob Dylan in the best possible way in his voice. -Red eyes- This is a fun album so far. Really well put-together sound. -Suffering- I blinked on this one. Got busy. I'm sure it was fine. -An Ocean Between the Waves- Has an 80s movie soundtrack vibe. I dig it. Ended rather abruptly. -Disappearing- This one was okay. -Eyes to the wind- Better -The haunting idle- Meh -Burning- And we're back. Nice vibe on this song. -Lost in the dream- A bit more Dylan coming out in this one. But it's still kinda nice. -In reverse- The first part of this was like the music they put on at the end of your massage. This is a good album. It's going into the rotation.

I wasn’t familiar with this album before today and I had only heard the name of the band. I really, really liked this. I wrote more but it didn’t save and I’m not writing my thoughts down again. Suffice to say, I’m going to keep an eye out for more of their stuff.

This is an amazing album, the vibes are immaculate and I love their sound. I am currently working on an assignment so the chill of this is exactly what I'm after right now.

I'm shocked I had never heard of The War on Drugs. I love this type of music. I can understand why others don't. I really enjoyed this album. One to consider for vinyl. 4/5

La verdad me gustó, tendría que escucharlo nuevamente para prestarle más atención a las letras, pero es un álbum que por el estilo escucharía en el diario

Okay. I’m surprised I haven’t listened to more War on Drugs, and I plan to remedy that.

Dreamy throughout and psychedelic at times this indie rock album is a great listen. Vocals illicit strong Bob Dylan vibes and lyrics are heavy and depressing. Ethereal effects overlays bring a bit more depth to each track. Standout is "Red Eyes"

Deep, well structured and brilliantly played, this is one of the crucial rock records of the last 10 years. The musicianship is superb and the production gives a profound bittersweerness, the album's selling point, if you ask me. A great record.

7.5/10. bueno muchas canciones se parecen caleta a young turks (bien👍)

Complete surprise. I really enjoyed this album.

I kept hearing touches of Dylan in his phrasing, then he went full Zimmerman on the final song.

Something a bit different, in a good way. I've now added it to my playlist.

This album is great. It's got a a 60s folk vibe at times. And it's almost ambient in how the songs bleed into one another.

I love The War On Drugs and find their music to have a great emotional vibe that I resonate with. Would be cool af to see them live sometime. The songs on the album are long and they kinda blur together in my mind but that's okay.

Sounds nice and reminds me of Ryan Adams a bit.

It’s probably one of my least favorite indie albums to come up, but it’s still pretty good. Nice lyrics and production.

It was good.

Really good album. I'm jealous of how great these guys are at making simple songs sound compelling. PHILLY REPRESENT

Really enjoyed this for the most part. Some songs around the middle weren't so good and it was a tad samey but as a whole thought it was great. Sounds a bit like mystery jets but also Springsteen and maybe even Dylan in parts Will be listening again. The best tracks were under pressure, red eyes and burning

It’s hard to say whether or not I think I’ve heard The War On Drugs before. I’ve certainly heard of the war on drugs, but the uncertainty is around The War On Drugs. You know what I mean, right? Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Under The Pressure, Eyes To The Wind My expectations of this album were very different to what it turned out to be. I expected some kind of psychedelica or stoner rock (I think for obvious reasons). However, this was very easy listening pop rock with a dash of folk thrown in for good measure. Sometimes, it can be easy to think it’s might be an album by The 1975, but with better vocals. Don’t get me wrong, I quite like The 1975, but the vocals can be a bit annoying at times. Anyway, I digress, this album was really good and I liked it a lot.

A solidly good rock album with no small amount of Springsteen influences clearly visible.

Lush and amazing. I would say the songwriting is great but at times impossible to tell what the fuck he is saying. The whole thing just comes together amazingly; its hazy and smoky and wonderful. Best tracks: Under the Pressure, Red Eyes, Lost In The Dream

This album is semi-fun and semi-original. All in all, not too excited about it, but I’d definitely listen to it again as I did enjoy it. Nothing here that’s quite groundbreaking, as it is furthering a nee genre. Songs can start to get stale with such long runtimes, while some impressed me by keeping me interested with the long runtimes. 4/5

Some fantastic tracks on this

I can't decide whether his voice reminds me of Bob Dylan or Tom Petty... bit of both I suppose. Regardless, I love this record. It sounds great, it's mixed well, the songs are well written, and the overall vision is executed well. At times I feel like it is a bit of a one-trick pony in that all the songs do sound relatively similar. The guitar sounds are pretty consistent, the song structures aren't wildly variable. So, there's a very distinct sound to his music, but luckily for me I really like this particular trick. Highly recommended for a drive with the windows down when the weather is nice. It's such a dreamy soundscape to sink into. Lovely.

In the vein of Bruce and Neil Young. An amazing listen.

America goes Scritti Politti

3.5/5 Great album to fall asleep to, or just to have on in the background while you’re doing something else. Very pleasant listening experience Favorite track: Suffering

I listened to the start a couple times. Not bad. I did like this album, but it also didn't feel very memorable to me. 3.5 for me but since I can't do that, squishy 4.

Well mixed and good use of effects, this does feel like an evolution of some the influences listed on the Wikipedia page.

Bringing to mind Waterboys Mike Scott's vocals and Springsteen's style with textured guitar and other sounds. I also keep hearing Sam Fender's "17 going under". Not sure about the extended outro of the first song. Second half is a bit better, but it's really very good.

It is hard to understand that this album is almost 10 years old already. Mixing motorik with Bruce Springsteen. Got several 5* tracks, in particular an ocean in between the waves, which might have been my favourite song from 2014. But the album is a little on the long side: 45 minutes would have been perfect, just like the albums that influenced it.

Very nice background music.

Highly atmospheric, I just lose attention somewhat toward the end.

An interesting mix of Eno styled ambience with a new wave production and a clear indie style.

In Rainbows Disk 2.

Очень необычно, вкусно. По вайбу есть что-то от "ladies and gentlemens...", но при этом не такой впечатляющий, что-ли. Так что 4+

I already knew this one, but a fantastic album nevertheless.

Already listened

If anyone asked me what the youths meant when they say "it's a vibe", I'd probably use this album as an example. Good chill tunes, the songs are a bit lacking in variation but they do paint a nice picture and the guitar work is very nice once you start really paying attention to it. Knew these guys since they get some play on the local radio so the first two songs I already knew. I appreciate it a bit more now having sat through a full album. Feels like a mix of Arcade Fire and Springsteen.

Listens: 2 Enjoyed: yeah Nice chill album, great for background noise

Some nice haunting sounds on here. Liked it!

That's solid. Just... really solid. Good songwriting, excellent performances, great production. Just a really solid album.

Though it tails off a bit, this is a fantastic reboot of Dylan, if he was backed by Don Henley's Boys of Summer soft-rock 80s synth sound. They'd perfect this on the next record, which adds a bit of Springsteen into the mix as well.

The War on Drugs > Nancy Reagan's War On Drugs. Best track: Red Eyes

AMAZING ALBUM!!!

enjoyed

4.5 I absolutely adore the song Red Eyes, so I was really excited to see what else this band had to offer - and I wasn’t disappointed. One of the most perfectly named albums I’ve probably heard, this album FEELS like navigating a hazy dream, the kind that makes you wonder how much was real and how much was made-up once it’s over. I’m a sucker for this kind of bass-driven dream pop bullshit, and this album is nothing but one great example of it after another. No matter the song, there was a really cool bridge or crescendo or some kind of musical shift that just set off all the auditory nerve receptors in my brain… or whatever tf it is that makes us enjoy music. As much as I’d prefer not to use someone else’s words, I really feel like Stuart Berman from Pitchfork describes it best in his review of the album: “Loaded with songs whose greatness is revealed slowly, where the simplest, most understated chord change can blow a track wide open and elevate it from simply pretty to absolutely devastating." Just a pleasant listen from start to finish, and feels nowhere as long as its runtime suggests. The perfect mental escape of an album, but at the same time there’s a part of it that makes me think of late nights with the people I care about most in this world. The kind where we’re all probably a little bit messed up on something or other, but we’re enjoying each other’s company and not caring 10 PM has just turned into 1 AM. Good vibes all around. Favorites songs: Red Eyes, Under the Pressure, An Ocean in Between the Waves, Burning

I feel like I knew this before I heard it, whether from cultural osmosis or because it is steeped in so many cultural touchstones

People that prefer melodic rock will find their groove here. This album deserves to be judged as a whole where each song finds a way to be what it is when it is playing, but then slipping into near obscurity when the next one starts. While this can come off as something that sounds boring, perhaps it is, but objectively without any consideration of mood or preferences, this album is remarkably solid and well done, and if it is boring, so be it, this is one of the best boring album experiences to be had.

This album made me want to do shrooms.

Odd how nostalgia can manifest in more than one dimension simultaneously. On the personal: this was the last album I bought during my first music collection era. (Yes, I was seduced by the bright future of streaming. But just to make clear, I'm not a vinyl returner. If for no other reason, I lack the space and I have a developed talent for scratching records and breaking needles). Beyond me, as most things should be: it evokes an age that I was never a part of but somehow seem to think that I can identify acutely. Which, I think, is very much a positive thing to say about the record. It starts with the cover and the title. A sepia-tinted photograph, simple iconography, a distinct yet understated distinction between band name and album name. The individual is in repose, but hunched into himself as though conducting an accounting of the soul rather than opening up to the world. (Re-reading this: what a load of Pseuds' Corner) I guess I like this not because it is an exceptional album (it is good), but because it speaks to me in very distinct and individual ways. This happens sometimes, when I listen to and fall in love wit a specific album, but have no real curiosity in exploring the rest of the band's catalogue. I short, I like this, but I don't think my reasons why will have any real bearing on anyone else.

An absolute peach - particularly at this time of year when the nights are long and the air is cold. A warm, mellow sound to sink into.

This LP, unlike Ghosteen, I did see on all the critics lists when it came out and I ended up listening to “Red Eyes” a fair bit. I can hear some Arcade Fire influence in that song and Bob Dylan, especially in “In Reverse". After reading that Adam G said he was influenced by The Waterboys, the vocalist similarities became obvious, in fact my co-judge said this sounded like “Mike Scott’s new band.” So, comparing this to the superb “Fisherman's Blues” which we were sent a few weeks ago, I would say that the songs from “Lost in the Dream” by comparison, seem to be cast from the same mould. They have the same desolate feel – to make songs more up-tempo they just add a faster beat. They said, I do like the mood and instrumentation, especially the guitar work. Between a 3 and a 4 for me. I’m wondering if we’ll ever see his buddy and x-bandmate, Kurt Vile on 1001?

In Reverse is among the greatest songs ever made. Okay we got that out of the way up front. I’m no stranger to The war on drugs. I’ve been a fan for a half a decade now. This album in particular is very deserving to be on this list. Not only does it put The War on Drugs on the map, but it seems to be the one where they found themselves, and have been confidently creating from this vein since. This is one that will spark the same feelings from the time you first listened to it. For me it was in a time where I was making a lot of new friends and making music videos for my friend new album and we talked a lot about this band. When I listen to this I get all those feelings of excitement, creativity, and remembering what’s important. It’s not a perfect album, I still get just a touch bored in the middle. But the first half and back half are filled with some of their best jams and will keep you coming back.

strong 4, very nostalgic feeling

I used to have an app on my phone by Brian Eno called Bloom, which I spent a lot of time goofing around with. I'm not Tom Petty, but if I was then this album probably would have been the result of all those pleasantly wasted afternoons. A pretty album, relaxing, easy to listen to. On first listen I find it good not great, but I may well come back to it and let it grow on me. On the other hand, the prominent repetitive drum track might break me if I listen again. 3.5 stars rounding down for percussion. Update: rounding up, I let it grow on me.

I first came across The War On Drugs as Diane Nguyen dropped Bojack Horseman off in rehab at the end of series 5 of, well, Bojack Horseman. It's a scene that more or less stopped me dead, being a perfect culmination to a near-perfect series of a near-perfect tellyshow. Unsurprisingly, the music selection was near-perfect. The album though - well... I like it. It's like Dire Straits came back from the early 1980s, stopped off in the early-mid 2000s and picked up Death Cab for Cutie then had an illegitimate love-child called The War On Drugs. I like it a lot. But I'd not choose to listen to it when I wanted to be lifted, spiritually or emotionally, to a happier place.

This one was surprisingly good. It felt like a modern Bob Dylan meets Bruce Springsteen. Yes, at times I felt like the lead singer was trying too hard to emulate Dylan's voice (or Springsteen's shrieks) but there was a really cool blend of soft guitar and percussions, synth and piano/keys, raspy vocals, and solid lyrics. I really nice twist on (or evolution of) Americana rock. The album had me paying attention right from get go with Under the Pressure and Red Eyes; other notables included An Ocean in Between the Waves, Disappearing, The Haunting Idle, and Burning.

This album is a blend of easy listening and hardcore rock stylings. In addition to thriving as a live group, but also as an experimental venture this group has the lyrical and musical prowess to soar beyond one genre or mood.

Nice. Discovering new bands like this are why we use this generator.

good one, even without kurt vile

Surprisingly nice album to listen to; the whole album has a certain vibe that catches you by surprise. I will say thought that most of the songs sounded very similarly, thought. 8/10.

I used to listen to Goodbye Jumbo a lot. This reminded me of that. It's a "big band" rock sound, as exhibited in Red Eyes. Suffering and the Haunting Idle, a bit less so. Enjoyable, nevertheless.

Very moody. Bob Dylan mixed with Bruce Springsteen mixed with Wilco mixed with the 80s echo sound. Would be a great road trip album.

Pretty darn good. 4 stars.

Really good album. It’s often a mix of bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen instrumentation, if they were updated for the 2010s. I like the spacey feel of the whole thing. 8/10

A definite winner! Another band I'd heard a few songs from and enjoyed, but in this case, I really liked a lot of the songs I hadn't heard before even better. Though, some of the super sleepy, ambient stuff, I could do without.

Charming soundscapes created here, dreamlike, well crafted, perhaps a little unmemorable at times but a good album nevertheless.

Really good indie rock album. Lacking a bit of variety, but still quite enjoyable.

Much better than Ronald Reagan's war on drugs but nowhere near as good as that song what Grange Hill did: https://youtu.be/kkQXnQ0plDA Thought provoking, emotive stuff I am sure you will agree. Grange Hill I mean not Adam Granduciel and his mates. Obviously.

Nice atmospheric stuff

I got this on vinyl. Good vibes great album.

So sweet, I love the nostalgic tone, especially on "Burning" and "Red Eyes".

Could quite easuly be an album from the late 70s. Decent album and one I'll likely listen to again, but to me it's more "background" music than music I'd set aside time to listen to.

Rock planant qui passse tres biens, a réécouter ça aussi, c'est bien produit j'aime bien ce qu'ils proposent

Enjoyed this one a lot, a great sense of energy and forward momentum, which works well to balance out the at-times bleak and depressing writing. Most songs just ooze atmosphere (Under The Pressure, Red Eyes, The Haunting Idle) and there is fantastic playing throughout the whole album.

Nice and dreamy - didn’t expect this sound and somehow this band completely flew under my radar apart from spotting it on festival lineups. It’s and 80s kind of sound and Adam’s vocals sound like a mix of Bob Dylan’s, Mark Knopfler and a Young Turks era Rod Stewart yet strangely skirting being derivative. The record tapers a bit towards the second half but the first half is banger after banger.

Beautiful album worth another listen-thru, I think. I can totally here the 80s themes. Like, totally.

its like a sadder, less country Springsteen 4.5

Love the dark and introspective songwriting, not big on the bubbly millennial indie-rock sound.

I know the name of the band, but everything on Lost in the Dream seemed like new music to me. I would be surprised if I haven't heard anything from the War On Drugs before, because this was an easy album to listen to. The music might be Indie, with hints towards Americana. If you like Fleet Foxes, you might like this. There were no bad tracks. I would listen to this album again.

I like it! First time I listened was with headphones, really good!

Awesome

Liked the album. Moody/emo vibe

I enjoyed this one a lot! Will definitely listen to more of this band.

Mysig köra-bil-rock

A very laid back album, but with a early 2000s indie feel to me. "Red Eyes" and "Suffering" my favourite tracks and would happily listen to the entire album again.

Easy listening, in the good way.

Bob Dylan vibes? 3 Nothing special, "Red Eyes" has great energy though. "In Reverse" really touched me too.

Love this band and album, they're sound is both ethereal and immediate.

Nice music, songs felt too long sometimes.

This is a perfect album for cruising around in the summer

I like

Surprisingly good. I'd heard some of this stuff before, but this is the first time I've gotten thru it all in one go. Though the album was a bit soft in places, I wholly appreciated it all the way through. Will put this into my rotation.

The War on Drugs has been a massive failure. I mean, it’s kind of dumb anyway to declare war on something that can’t surrender or sign a treaty anyway (the US hasn’t actually declared a military war since WWII), but the War on Drugs is worse than that. It has caused prison populations to explode, created a school to prison pipeline, and shattered communities. And people still use drugs! So thanks tough-on-crime Republicans, and the Democrats that went along with them (and sometimes even made it worse), for 45 years of cruel, insensitive, and just plain stupid policy. War on Drugs the band is a very different story, and a massive success. I’ve loved “Under the Pressure,” “Red Eyes,” and a few other War on Drugs songs from other albums, but never sought out a full album. While I really enjoyed “Lost in the Dream” overall, I found it to the the opposite of The Hives’ “Your New Favorite Band” - two singles to start the record, but while The Hives got better, War on Drugs never quite reached those highs again. While neither are my new favorite band, they are both bands I’ll be listening to more of.

Man, lead vocalist Adam Granduciel sounds an awful lot like Ryan Adams (but without the problematic personal life that I know of!), Yay for modern Americana that I don't feel guilty listening to!

I really dig the atmosphere of this album. There isn’t much too intricate or complicated. However the layering of piano/synth with the guitar, and to a lesser degree the drums, makes me happy. I’m not sure how else to put it. A couple nitpicks are that some of the tracks are a bit long and could be shortened. Suffering is a miss too. Cut that song out and trine another 5-10 minutes off smartly and I think this album could border on being great. Nitpicks aside, I just want to lay back at night on a muggy summer day, close my eyes, and enjoy this some more.

Rätt bra

Pretty good, pleasant listening experience

Really enjoyable album. Very re-listenable. Not my usual style, maybe a bit light for me, but added.

I love this album. I think it feels very much like classic rock in the vein of Springsteen, but mixes in enough modern indie rock influences to keep it interesting for me.

This is The War on Drugs' third album and was inspired (if that's the right word) from lead singer and guitarist Adam Granduciel's bout with depression and loneliness after a long tour. The War on Drugs' music (at least the early stuff) has a dreamy, ambient feel to it. Their best songs tend to be ones that start slow and build and there are a number of those songs on this album which is probably my favorite from them. Their music is compared to various artists and music of the 80's. Yeah, I guess; if you dig you can pick out some influences of 80's artists. Though, I get a lot more from the their last album "I Don't Live Here Anymore." Their three big (relatively speaking) and my favorite songs from the album are "Under the Pressure", "Red Eyes," and "An Ocean in Between the Waves." They start slow and build with guitars, keyboards and piano to a jam. Some may say the last three minutes of "Under the Pressure" is basically a filler with ambient music. I'd agree. Alright, I went digging for 80's sounds in some of these songs. This is what I heard. The beat in "Disappearing" does resemble Tears for Fears' "Pale Shelter." Respectable. I heard Bob Seger in "Eyes to the Wind" specifically "Against the Wind". OK. And finally I did not hear Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark" in "Disappearing" but more of a Rod Srewart's " Young Turks." Ouch! Overall, I've always liked this album. It has a definite chill kind of mood and maybe The War on Drugs' best album in achieving that state.

I like this album. The atmospherics give it a Daniel Lanois vibe. His voice has a dylanesque drawl which is appealing. The songs are generally strong especially Under Pressure, Red Eyes, Burning and in Reverse. The guitar sound is also notable. It does get a little same by the end but the strong songwriting keeps it interesting. 3.75 stars.

Good stuff, liked it originally, still does goes stuff for me

Big step up from previous records, this is mature and interesting and (befitting the title) a little dream-like. “Under the Pressure” is great here but has been elevated to epic proportions live. “Suffering” is also great. The rest of the record sets a mood, contemplative and near trance-like at times, but driving at others. There’s an expansiveness to the songs and the playing that seems like a perfect balance of the auteur effect and jam band tendencies. Subsequent records are even better – further growth – but this is an easy, straight-up 4.

It was okay, but nothing particularly special

Was not too stoked on the lyrics but the music was tight

One of my favorite indie adjacent albums of the last ten years. Under the Pressure was an integral song during the biggest depression of my life. This album has a great vibe and it feels good to listen to it.

An excellent record. Worthy of 1001? Not in my opinion. That’s not to detract from how good the record is, it’s just not something I think is more influential than derivative. That’s said, I will listen to it again, and I could imagine a live show would be fanatic.

You know an album is good when you hear the songs for the first time and you tell yourself "I'm gonna have to go back and listen to this again" that's how it is for me with this album. This has The Verve's Urban Hymns murkiness all over it (a good thing) with instruments buried in the mix so low that you may not here what their playing the first time. I love "A Deeper Understanding" but wasn't impressed with "I Don't Live Here Anymore" Adam Granduciel's vocals remind me of a cross between Dwight Twilley and Daniel Lanois (again, a good thing) This is definitely a 1001 album you must hear before you die.

Ah look, I know this is good. I've played it through 5 times now. It's just... Pretty indistinguishable. Every track. Just a decent 4/5 track. Over and over again. Consistent.

parabéns às drogas, que por mais um ano, venceram a guerra às drogas 😭😭😭

the war on drugs q deu certo ✌️

Very pretty

I can got down with this. Not their absolute best album in my opinion but definitely emblematic of their distinctive sound. Their music is like a cold dark cave, but from which you can look out and see the stars.

Had this on in the background and it was a steady flow of good music through the post album shuffle

Philly represent

I haven’t ever heard of this band before, but seconds into the first song I was pretty sure I liked them. “Under the Pressure” instantly drew me in. I was shocked to realize this song is over 9 minutes and I hadn’t checked my watch. Most of the songs on the album take you on a dreamy, uptempo and, at times, soaring journey with the drum tracks pulling a wall of music in their wake. The often ethereal vocals slide in and out without disrupting the flow of the music. It’s a style that really works well for me. There’s a lot to like in the slower songs on this album as well. “Suffering” and “Lost in the Dream” roll in like a fog around you. Both are really beautiful tracks. LOST IN THE DREAM doesn’t jump out and demand attention but lures you in with a cool, unhurried vibe. This will be an easy album to put on an revisit often.

I dig it. I wouldn't call it incredible or anything, though

un peu long mais un feeling que moi de 2014 aurait bien aimé

Very good indie music. I liked it.

Spectacular! Came right away to in the perfect time, a very cold winter, specially beautiful guitars and reverbs.

A kind of peaceful album that was nice to listen to. No recognized songs

All very pleasant. I didn’t have a full hour to listen through, but I don’t think I’ll have missed much. I’ll try and come back to this one.

Cool album, big sounds. A great Alt music album. did lose interest at times in the middle to 2nd half of the record but in definitely think I'll be listening to this one again

Is revisit this. Good chilled out album with a definite 80s soft rock feel.

This is one I had listened to before. It scratches that Tom Petty itch for me.

First time hearing this album and I really enjoyed it. Some of the songs may be a bit long, but overall it's very enjoyable. Sort of a throwback rock album, which is rare to hear from newer music!

Great sound. Really liked it.

New band for my favourites. Like it a lot. Reminds me of Ryan Adam's 1979.

So fun to get albums I love on this list. I've been a fan of the The War on Drugs (the band, not the concept) since A Deeper Understanding, and their latest is among my favorite albums this year. Adam Granduciel has such a cool voice, reminiscent of guys like Bob Dylan and Lou Reed, or contemporary Kurt Vile. Just a unique, unmistakable sound. I remember this album getting loads of critical acclaim back in 2014, and I wasn't on board then, but anytime I give this another shot I find more to love. These guys balance wistfulness and triumph extremely well. Favorite tracks: Red Eyes, Burning, Lost in the Dream, Eyes to the Wind, In Reverse, An Ocean In Between the Waves. Album art: Very contemplative shot, love the degraded colors and the light/dark contrast. I got annoyed seeing this back in 2014 when I wasn't into it, but now it's comforting. 4.5/5

Liked this a lot! Krautrocky rhythms overlaid with dreamy vocals and slide guitar - a very pleasant experience. Mostly preferred the more uptempo songs to the slower ones, but appreciate how it all blends together. Fave track - "An Ocean In Between The Waves" maybe? This album is more about the album than individual tracks, though....

me gusto... definitivamente va a tener un relistening

Reminded me of other bands, but with less energy.

Friday, 26 June, 2026 This is a very good album with a few great tracks. A little long, however. It needs to cut 15 minutes.

This was a pretty good album, not blowing my socks off but not bad

It started strong and I liked the first half of the record, that the repetitiveness came out too strong. Many songs feel similar and in a couple of them I malignantly thought "knock off Bob Dylan", which ain't fair, but not far from the truth either.
