Cross between Sigur Ros and Wilco.
Low key great album
I’ve never heard of this band before. Red Eye was my favorite track, but I overall enjoyed this album. The Haunting Idle was beautiful and also a favorite track. The overall album has a very low key, relaxed atmosphere. I would definitely listen again. Has hints of Dylan and Petty, two artists whose work I really enjoy, so no surprise I really liked this album. 5 for me
I used to listen to this album during my sad stoner era in college. It is wonderful for that sort of thing.
Super !
i discovered this album at 14 and life changed forever
Amazing Indie masterpiece. Reminds me a lot of Kurt Vile, but more indie and rock based.
Beautiful album, easy to listen to.
Adam Granducial writes one song, but he does it to perfection on Lost In The Dream. A definite highlight of the 2010s and a clear example of artists having a terrible time and creating something beautiful.
You don't come to The War On Drugs for variation. You come to them for brilliance. That's exactly what Lost In the Dream delivers.
This album has a good sound, well composed, very easy to listen too. First time really sitting down to listen their music.
Good
Indie rock, psychedelic rock. Precioso.
Day85 - not what i was expecting. sounds a lot like ryan adams to me.this is a good album
One of the best rock album of the 2010's. Instant classic and incredible production.
Never heard of them but now love them!
The War on Drugs' 2014 album "Lost In The Dream" stands as a hallmark of contemporary rock, blending elements of Americana, indie, and shoegaze into a mesmerizing sonic landscape. With its poignant lyrics, meticulous production, and captivating melodies, the album has garnered widespread critical acclaim and has left an indelible mark on modern music. In this review, we'll delve into the various aspects of the album, including its lyrics, music, production, themes, and influence, while also exploring its strengths and weaknesses. Lyrics: At its core, "Lost In The Dream" is an introspective journey through frontman Adam Granduciel's psyche, grappling with themes of isolation, longing, and existential angst. The lyrics are poetic yet deeply personal, evoking a sense of vulnerability and emotional rawness. Tracks like "Under the Pressure" and "Eyes to the Wind" paint vivid portraits of inner turmoil and the relentless passage of time, while "Red Eyes" and "An Ocean in Between the Waves" explore the yearning for connection amidst a world fraught with uncertainty. Pros: Poetic and introspective lyrics that resonate on a deeply emotional level. Skillful storytelling that invites listeners into the protagonist's inner world. Universal themes of longing and introspection that offer a sense of relatability. Cons: Some may find the lyrics overly cryptic or abstract, making them difficult to decipher on initial listens. Limited thematic diversity, with many songs centering around similar motifs of isolation and longing. Music: Musically, "Lost In The Dream" is a tour de force, blending elements of rock, folk, and electronic music to create a rich tapestry of sound. The album's expansive arrangements and lush instrumentation create a sense of grandeur and cinematic scope, drawing listeners into its atmospheric embrace. Granduciel's intricate guitar work, coupled with the band's dynamic rhythm section and dreamy synthesizers, form the backbone of the album's sonic landscape. Pros: Masterful musicianship and attention to detail, with each instrument serving a distinct purpose within the mix. Dynamic song structures that ebb and flow, building tension and release with expert precision. Seamless integration of electronic and organic elements, creating a sound that feels both timeless and contemporary. Cons: Some may find the album's length (clocking in at over 60 minutes) to be excessive, potentially diluting the impact of individual tracks. Occasional moments of sonic clutter, where layers of instrumentation compete for attention, detracting from the overall clarity of the mix. Production: The production on "Lost In The Dream" is nothing short of immaculate, with Granduciel and co-producer Jeff Zeigler crafting a sonically rich and immersive listening experience. From the shimmering guitars to the pulsating synths, every element is meticulously arranged and mixed to perfection, resulting in a sound that is both expansive and intimate. The album's production strikes a delicate balance between polish and grit, capturing the raw energy of the band's live performances while still retaining a sense of studio sophistication. Pros: Crisp, detailed production that highlights the nuances of each instrument and vocal performance. Seamless integration of analog and digital recording techniques, resulting in a warm and inviting sonic palette. Layered textures and sonic depth that reward repeated listens, revealing new intricacies with each spin. Cons: Some purists may lament the album's polished sheen, longing for a more lo-fi or raw aesthetic. The dense production can occasionally feel overwhelming, especially on tracks with multiple layers of instrumentation. Themes: Thematically, "Lost In The Dream" is a meditation on the human condition, exploring the complexities of identity, memory, and existential dread. The album's protagonist grapples with feelings of alienation and disconnection, searching for meaning in a world that seems increasingly fragmented and surreal. Themes of nostalgia and longing permeate the album, as the protagonist wrestles with the ghosts of his past and struggles to find his place in an uncertain future. Pros: Thought-provoking themes that invite listeners to reflect on their own experiences of longing and loss. Nuanced exploration of memory and nostalgia, with recurring motifs that lend the album a sense of cohesion and depth. Universal appeal, with themes that resonate across age, gender, and cultural boundaries. Cons: Some may find the album's existential musings to be overly melancholic or pessimistic, lacking in moments of hope or redemption. The thematic focus on introspection and longing may limit the album's accessibility for listeners seeking more lighthearted or escapist fare. Influence: "Lost In The Dream" has had a profound influence on the indie rock landscape, inspiring a new generation of artists with its bold sonic experimentation and introspective lyricism. The album's lush production and widescreen soundscapes have become touchstones for bands seeking to push the boundaries of the genre, while its themes of longing and existential angst continue to resonate with listeners around the world. From its innovative blending of genres to its uncompromising artistic vision, "Lost In The Dream" stands as a testament to the power of music to transcend boundaries and touch the soul. Pros: Pioneering influence on the indie rock genre, inspiring countless bands to explore new sonic territories and lyrical themes. Enduring legacy, with the album continuing to attract new listeners and garner critical acclaim years after its release. Cultural impact, with "Lost In The Dream" cementing The War on Drugs' status as one of the most important and influential bands of the 21st century. Cons: Some may argue that the album's influence has led to an oversaturation of similar-sounding bands within the indie rock scene, diluting its originality and impact. The pressure to live up to the album's legacy may overshadow subsequent releases from The War on Drugs, making it difficult for the band to evolve creatively without alienating fans. Conclusion: In conclusion, "Lost In The Dream" is a modern masterpiece that transcends genre conventions and speaks to the universal human experience. With its poetic lyrics, lush production, and innovative musical arrangements, the album offers a mesmerizing journey through the depths of the soul. While it may not be without its flaws, its profound emotional resonance and enduring influence more than outweigh any minor criticisms. In an era marked by uncertainty and disconnection, "Lost In The Dream" stands as a beacon of hope and artistic integrity, reminding us of the transformative power of music to heal, inspire, and ultimately, connect us to one another.
Perfection 🎸
What a great surprise. Very chill I enjoyed it enough to his other albums. Rounding up to 5 4.5/5
Class
All bangers except 5 9 10 weren't quite up there
Indie rock, psychedelic rock. Precioso.
It sounds like driving off into the sunset, I love it
This is one of my top 10 albums ever.
1st
Solid album, some dark lyrics with solid riffs.
Bardzo ładne
This album hits me hard. Makes me feel like I’m floating in an endless void of darkness. Best with headphones and the volume turned up.
Loved it!
This was a new one for me and man, have I been missing War on Drugs! Great album with wonderful lyrics. I really like Adam’s voice and vocals. One of a Dylan-Petty hybrid but also all his own. Highly recommend this album if you like Tom Petty, Avett Brothers, or Noah Kahan.
Fantastic album. Even if he's copying Bob Dylan's vocal style.
Like a more ambient modern Dire Straits. Love it.
I actually love this album personally so i'm givining it a 5 stars. Can listen to it again and again tbh even though it is a bit repetitive. Always thought he was doing a bit of a bob dylan voice but its grown on me and i love him now. Slave Ambient was also a great album
Misread the name and accidentally listened to the band “WAR” while on drugs
11/10 perfect amazing if bob dylan and springsteen had a lovechild this would be it
Man they really nailed it on this one. It felt like being lost in a dream that I didn’t want to wake up from. It’s like they captured that moment between the force that pulls a wave up and the one that brings it crashing down, then somehow stretched it into an hour.
Very chill and great background music for twilight or a drive.
Modern day classic, I love this album. Every songs is brilliant, it holds great memories for me as a few of the songs were on a playlist me and my friend listened to on a few US roadtrips.
One of my favorites of our generation. Classic rock vibes. Some of the greatest rock songs from our generation
Lost In The Dream by The War On Drugs. Pretentious, songs go on too long, description of it us utter waffle and I loved it. It's moody but I felt quite cool listening to it. I can picture driving down route 66 at sunset listening to this. I want to own this
One of the best albums of the 2010s. Terrific guitar work even though it's not a shredder album. Solid musicianship throughout. Songs are well crafted and have the perfect balance of ambience and noise. This one's a keeper.
Really awesome listen and the perfect fit for the cold, snowy day we were having. Added to favorites on Spotify and bought the vinyl for some more cold nights.
This album shimmers and shines. I don’t know how to describe it sonically. It just makes me feel a sense of calm and wistful. It’s ephemeral in one way and fulfilling in another. I love it.
I remember being in high school hearing this album for the first time! Good times
Don't know why I've never heard of these guys. They were good back then...gotta be great by now ...see'em live
Great album. Perfect to listen to it at home on a winter Saturday.
The War on Drugs are one of my favorite bands and this is the album that got me into them. 10/10 desert island album for me
God this album is good. The blend between vocals and instrumental is perfect. The instrumental parts of the album are gold. I love the vibe that it's giving off. Did not expect to like it as much as I did
Great listen. Loved the beat.
This album sounds like if Don Henley, Tom Petty, and Bob Dylan got together and did a collaboration, this would be the result. It's modern indie rock with those 80's-90's flairs. Really solid. I enjoyed this album so much, I explored some more of The War on Drugs' catalog, and haven't heard a bad song yet! Favourite songs: Red Eyes, Eyes to the Wind, Lost in the Dream, Under the Pressure, In Reverse, An Ocean I Between the Waves, Burning, Disappearing Least favourite songs: The Haunting Idle 5/5
Like that there are a lot of instrumental only sections of music in the album
Great
Outstanding! I didn't really know who they were. I know Kurt Vile and see he left the band early on.
Great album, have listened to it a million times before, and will probably listen a million more.
Before listening to this album I knew not much of the band except their name and some fame in the indie rock scene. After listening to 'Lost in The Dream' I'm again very happy for this project that let me find albums like this. This is a very good album that shouldn't be classified as indie rock anymore. We don't have your usual guy v-nick shirt guys here but something that leans more into the areas of psychedlia and shoegaze without being one of these overlong, meandering albums. The musical vastness of these songs actually mean something here and gives the lyrics room to breathe. I will check out more of this band, especially these later albums!
I've listened to this album several times in the past - most recently before I saw them live last summer - and I find each song mysterious in its own way. The songs develop and pulse even as they sound very even and straightforward and almost conventional in other ways. The drumming (often reminiscent of Dancing in the Dark) isn't something I usually like, but there is so much kaleidoscoping sound on top that it keeps it surprising and interesting. Rewards repeated listening.
Autumnal and nostalgic, this album wears it's influences unabashedly and unironically. In 2014 being a rock band is like wearing a vintage shirt, it's inevitably a self-consciously retro enterprise whose success/failure is predicated on having good taste and knowing how to make old stuff fit. So this isn't the most original album you'll ever hear, but they have great taste in what vintage rock elements they borrow and a knack for arranging them all into something that's warm and cozy and fits perfectly. The guitar playing is simple, melodic, and totally effective, focusing on tone and texture over fireworks, it's echoey and washes in and out, sometimes fuzzy or all phaser warble and tremolo tremble, sometimes bright and clear and cutting. His voice isn't spectacular but sits just right in the mix; hoarse mumbly and shy but very affecting, it flits in and out of the layers of keys, synths, sax and guitar. They build tension and energy slowly through repetition of basic chord progressions, lead riffs and drum-machine sounding rhythms that becomes trance-like, peaking and deflating and going again.
Awesome band. Need to check out more of their stuff.
Definitely one to come back to. 5/5
i love this album its like psychedelic softrock kinda thing and it just keeps on going
Perfect album to wind down to.
So good. Artist #334 on last.fm, but they will rise!
I know my nostalgia bias is showing but LITD encapsulates so much of what I love about 70s and 80s rock that I can’t helped but be ensnared by.
An absolute beast of an album.
Waw, what an album. My greatest discovery since I've been on this website. 'Lost in the Dream' by The War on Drugs is a musical gem that stands out. The album not only features a captivating voice but also offers an intricate tapestry of instruments and melodies. The rich arrangements create a profound and immersive listening experience, allowing you to lose yourself in a sonic exploration. The production quality is top-notch, highlighting the band's meticulous attention to detail. This album is a testament to modern indie music's creative potential, and it's a perfect example of how a well-crafted album can be a rewarding and transformative experience for the listener.
i was on the verge of 4 and 5 for a while but the last song cemented the 5 star rating. great album for running and exploring in the woods. singer kinda has a bob dylan thing going on but it worked
-Dreamy, driving rhythms, low-key, Shoegaze-y at times, atmospheric -Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Coldplay, Dire Straits, Paul Kelley, Neil Young, Jackson Browne -esque I really enjoyed the mood, the sound, and the lyrics.
Already love this album
Back when i wrote the Yellow review, I thought i wasn't going to get any albums after 2005 since that's when the book came out but i didn't think about the different editions that went up to 2021 so i was surprised to see this album here. And my oh my is it great, If i could use one word to describe this album, it would be "comfy" since this album is so relaxing especially with the opener (Under The Pressure) and the closer (In Reverse). I feel that some people may be put off by the long length of this album but if you can put that aside, you will be in for one of the most comfy and relaxing albums ever. Best Song: Under The Pressure Worst Song: Lost In The Dream
I like these guys. They're even better with Lucius though!
I really like this album. It has a flowy feel to each of the tracks. It makes it really easy to listen to and enjoy. Eyes to the Wind - very cool track! Burning - very cool track! In Reverse - very cool track!
Wow! What a great find. I love this album!
Great album, underdog band
I absolutely love this band. Relaxing, yet motivating. I would recommend them to all jam fans.
Ok this is really, really good. I’ve heard of The War on Drugs obviously but never got around to sitting down and listening to them. Fuck I missed out. Added to my library. 5 stars
Love this album and band
From start to finish, not a single miss. Excellent album. After I married and started having children, I stopped buying a lot of music, and didn't end up listening to a lot either. I missed about 2 decades of bands and releases. The joy of following 1001 albums is these opportunities to hear something I missed that resonates so deeply with me.
I was gonna write this whole thing about Bob Dylan and The Travelling Wilburys but now it's late and I'm tired. Basically, I love this album, I think it's one of the best of the last decade. It sounds like if Jeff Lynne and Daniel Lanois produced an album together.
Never heard of this band before, but I absolutely loved this. Springsteen/Dylan influence over spacey echoing rock guitar - brilliant.
I'd heard of this band, but never listened to them before. But Wiki tells me some inspirations were The Waterboys and Spacemen 3? That feels very close to how this sounds. And I really dig both of those bands lol. This is... Kinda genius. Gonna go ahead and call it an instant 5. Atmospheric, moody, noisy, folky... and some damn fine guitar solos. Not sure why I never listened to them before, but this has definitely made me a fan. Listening to this on repeat today I think. 🎧 🎶
5 Excellent project from front to back. Enjoyed every song on here and was well worth the listen
Love War on Drugs
This album made a huge impression on me when I first heard it, and it survived many, many, many relistens. When I saw it pop up on this list, I was like "OK, easy five, an unbelievable record" and immediately looked forward to cuing it up. Yep, amazing record. Kind of jealous of anyone coming across it for the first time. One of the more interesting records of the last ten years. Very worthy of a spot on the 1001.
I'd never heard of this band before but you know what, I'm really glad I now have. This album has quickly become a new favourite of mine in the genre. Legitimately cannot get enough of it. Every song is impactful and meaningful and if I could put them all in the stand out songs section I would. Your ears won't regret this one Stand out songs: - Red Eyes - Suffering - Burning - In Reverse
I almost missed it, but had a 2nd listen. Atmospheric stuff, languid and cinematic and a bit soundtrack-ish Sunday morning music. But small speakers ruin it Large speakers let it's warmth fill the room properly, and revel the artifice. A massive echo, sounds like it recorded in a big warehouse - hence big atmospheric airy feel. And so I look them up. Toying this year. Subdue Opera House in December.
Simply one of the finest albums I’ve heard in a good long time. The best album I’ve listened to so far on my 1001 albums journey. I remember reading about this on a Deadspin Year End Album list and the person describing themselves as a “total nerd” for listening to LITD over and over and over. I, too, am that nerd. Every song is long and moody and beautiful. I’ve seen this band in person a couple of times, and I’ve loved the two albums they’ve come out with since. Simply, The War on Drugs is a top five band for me, and this is a masterpiece. 10 stars!
better version of The Killers
I've been a huge fan of this album since it came out and I don't care what the other music snobs on here say.
Some of these songs are going to be classics for me later on in life. Under the Pressure, Red Eyes, Eyes to the Wind, and Ocean in Between the Waves pumps me up beyond belief. Love the other songs too the album really stays true to its name. You find yourself getting lost in the spacy, dreamy songs. LOVE
Yeah, you know, lickface
Just love this.
muy cute, me gus
What a joy to come back to this album. Absolutely holds up and brings me right back to eating Jianbing in Tianjin on cold mornings.
There had been a breakthrough in regards to the War on Drugs! No but, in all seriousness, this is an amazing record. Every song on here invokes an Americana dreamed up and realized to perfection and not a second spent listening is deemed wasted for over an hour. Lost in the Dream is the kind of music that is made for road trips and everlasting memories and, nearly ten years on, is rightfully considered a classic of modern times (if it has been deemed such).
Super cool. I have never heard better.
Amazing album, one of my faves of the 2010s.
Amazing. I loved it! I loved the instrumentals especially.
This band captivates me in ways I cannot explain. I have always been more of a melody listener than a lyrics listener, and I think that's why I like them so much. The chord progressions stir emotions for me that have little to do with the words. Upon reading the lyrics, they are so abstract that it leaves the listener to interpret or project themselves onto them. As a middle-aged person I have to confess it feels nice to enjoy something so much that was made in the last 10 years.
Pretty much GOATed. Can't imagine a musical palate that would score this lower than 4 stars. Who is this NOT for? Fuck it's so good. Imma freak if I read the reviews and people are hating
Good long chill jam songs
Discovered an artist!! Loved getting to know the album
A dream worth both getting lost in and making recurring.
Just love the driving nature of the beat. One of my favourite artists of the '10s
Wow I thoroughly enjoyed this album. Incredibly musical and rhythmic in most songs, with excellent recording quality. You can easily get lost in these songs. 5 of 5.
I like this melodic thoughtful rock.
Really good! Good album to fall asleep to.
One of my favorite albums of all-time
i mean... its perf. not my exact vibe. but perf regardless
One of the best albums from here I've heard in quite a while
If you get the chance, try to see The War on Drugs live, they're fantastic
I've heard of the band but never listened. On my first listen I wasn't super impressed but I left it on repeat and some songs popped up again and I was digging it more. I gave it another relisten with fresh ears and I really enjoyed it. Definitely vibes with my tastes after another listen.
Really liked it! Will definitely like to listen again.
The War On Drugs is one of my favorite laid back rock sounds. This album comes from the lead singers battle with depression, so it's VERY laid back. Super good. Enjoyed the whole thing.
This album can best be described as expansive. The music is a lush soundscape that sounds massive. The songs take time to develop but pay off in huge emotional crescendos. The chord structures are simple, but the melodies are anthemic and the effect is very elevating. In terms of genre, there's a bit of folk, a bit of country, and it is undergirded by an almost 70s style beat. Vocally, the singer reminds me of a more refined Bob Dylan. Overall, this is an incredible album that truly feels like a unified piece of music.
One of my all time favorites
Loved it. Kind of U2 meets Springsteen vibe
Yeah, this the one
Indie rock, psychedelic rock. Precioso.
Every second of this fucks
This album took me somewhere. Soulful and deep. Grateful that it was my first album of this challenge.
Geweldig.
I absolutely love Adam's voice and the soft ethereal folk-rock style that still has a driving energy. This really comes together for me. I've enjoyed this and have just put it on repeat all day.
Dreamy, sad, emotional, lovely, this is a very evocative album and a totally unexpected delight. Reminiscent of Public Service Broadcasting with live vocals, and a bit Bob Dillony in places, it is beautifully crafted, subtle, textured, and chock-full of melody. I couldn't make out many of the lyrics, but for some reason it transported me to a sunset, perhaps over the main stage of a festival or overlooking a harbour full of fishing boats. Atmospheric. Rating: 4.5/5 Playlist track: Under the Pressure Date listened: 17/10/22
The tones! The toooooones!!!!
Let me take you back in time, to the mid 90s. After suffering through "liking" music because everyone else thought it was cool (C&C Music Factory, anyone?) and then veering towards my dorm mates' penchant for early 90s hippy tunes (Phish, anyone?), one summer I discovered CD101, the new alternative station in Columbus, OH. It was sooo cool - nothing but new alternative. Low budget, but it wasn't 'corporate'. It was a DJ hanging out somewhere actually playing tracks off CDs (or so we were led to believe). They had the Andyman-athon at Christmas, and sponsored the Blue Jackets New Year's Eve event (hockey + swing dancing, awesome!). There was nothing cooler than having the oval CD101 sticker on your car. My point? Well, it was music like this. 10 years earlier, of course, but like this. You felt cool. You felt plugged in. Cranking that radio with the windows down, cruising down I-70 around the Miller-Kelton exchange on your way back from the Howl at the Moon Saloon (dueling pianos, anyone?) with the coolest tunes blaring. Man, that was the life. Then, the crapfest of the late 90s and early aughts intervened, and man that was bad. But around 2010 it the feeling started to come back - the music, at least some music, got good again. I wasn't hearing it on Mix 101, of course (the very definition of corporate radio, they ain't no CD101), but I grabbed a few of Amazon's free songs of the day, and it came roaring back. "It's been a year" by Greg Laswell. "Walk on Water" by Bad Lieutenant (the dudes from New Order). "Born Losers" by Matthew Good - holy cow. "When the lights come on this whole place gets ugly; but when they're out strangers fall in love...New Order's on the turn table we're dancing; cause what else do you do when you don't talk?". Damn. Even "Babylon" by David Gray. That's what this reminds me of. I didn't think anything could unseat Janelle as my favorite album from this so far, but The War on Drugs has done it. Hey Mix101, how's about a little less Sam Smith and a little (lot) more of this? 5/5
Love!
Another perfect distillation of the defining sound of the mid 20s - it made us feel it all, in earnest. It's hard to know what a decade will sound like until you're well and truly planted in the next. I can tell you what the 80s sounded like, I can tell you what the 90s sounded like, and maybe this is what I'll tell you the 20s sounded like.
love. v chill
All time favourite
Great vibe, love the whole album.
"Standing in the wake of our pain." This album is about the journey down the slope beyond the peak of some past trauma. The acknowledgement that something painful has happened, and there's no point denying it, but we're going to make it through. Ride this out with me. Life is worth it. It approaches the pain of the past, not with denial, but with warmth. And hey, maybe we'll experience pain again, but we can learn from it, and take strength from it. "we won't get lost inside it all again" Cross the bridge To redefine your pain Then the answer is in your heart Wide awake I rearrange the way I listen in the dark Dreaming of starting up again Musically there isn't really anything in the way of hooks. You won't have any catchy choruses in your head after a couple of listens. I imagine this won't be a popular album on this project. Everything just flows into each other. If you're trying to listen to everything once in your lunch break or something, and you're not feeling it, this will just pass you by. If you are feeling it though, you can catch the mood that this album puts out any time you want, and it won't get old. These aren't songs with a verse sticky taped onto a chorus, and oh here comes that verse again, oh yep chorus now, oh gosh it's middle eight time! These songs grow and evolve over their life. You don't become too overly familiar with any one component after a handful of listens. There is texture and evolution. This gives this album a longevity that a lot of catchy pop albums won't have (and I love a catchy pop album, don't get me wrong). This is also why the song length doesn't matter too much. They're not trying to constantly repackage the same riff or vocal hook or change or whatever. The songs flow like a river. It's the same theme, but that water isn't coming back upstream, it's gone. It's about the journey and the motion. Elements are introduced and other elements fade away, not with dramatic changes, but with a kind of natural feeling imperceptibility. You notice the mood change more than you notice the elements that go into it. More than most of the albums we've had so far, this is best experienced "as an album". The songs flow into each other. If you're listening on something that doesn't add annoying gaps of silence between songs, the way that The Haunting Idle flows into Burning is amazing. Good album imo.
Good for daytime listening
idk yet
Probably a 4.5 but I love this album / band so….
I already had a bunch of these songs in my favourites. Nice to listen to the album
I love this album. I listened to it a lot growing up and holds a special place in my heart. (This sounded cringe for some reason)
This is one of those albums that makes this project so ace - I had only a vague notion of The War on Drugs (the band) prior to this recommendation. Pulsating, haunting indie rock, right up my street. Boom!
Wow, what a mellow yet beautiful walk through this mystical soundscape. Deep and rich with an almost trance-like peace. Track 5 titled, “Disappearing” was my favorite.
An album for a specific mood, feels like a soundtrack to a great movie
When you're great, everyone wants to dim your shine. Sure, they can call it Dad rock or whatever. They can say it's derivative. They're all wrong. The haters. I've seen Under the Pressure played live. And it has evolved from this early album. It is much glossier now than this bare bones version. "I'm in my finest hour. Can I be more than just a fool?" Yeah man. You are alright. The Haunting Idle is a truly epic intro and then, it leaves you there idling like a chef who uses the precisely correct amount of salt and leaves you hungry. And then Burning comes in like Rod Stewart in Young Turks and I am second guessing my defense of their originality, but then it meanders elsewhere.. Technically some of the most persuasive guitar sounds and crisp drum work from a currently working band. War on Drugs will be a band our children will know and respect. They will listen to it to try to understand who we were. This album is a great example of why I love music.
Like driving through the desert at night, in the summer
A nostalgic ode to 80s rock that's as inspired and well executed as the artists that came before it.
Išla bi u rat za ovaj album. Al na droge
9/10. This was really nice, I'd like to relisten when I have more time to listen to the lyrics
I was shocked to see this make the list. I love this album and it’s hard to determine if I prefer this one or a deeper understanding. They are both great, smooth instrumentals to a t. I can’t and do listen to this album all the time. 9.0/10
5 stars
I discovered this band after first hearing and digging into Kurt Vile. And it's one of those bands that keeps getting recommended to my by the various streaming services. All that to say Under the Pressure is one of my favourite songs and this album as a whole is a great listen. An Ocean In Between The Waves was another highlight. Keen to keep on the playlist.
First time of listening, great faux Dylan lyrical style, loved the whole album.
Loved it. Touch of Springsteen and reminded me of Sam Fender?
Chill AF
Daydream-y, melodic and melancholic.
muuuito bom!
Ça me rappelle quand j'étais heureux
What a surprise! Loved this!
Holy shit it's so good
Great american rock album. deep, contemplative, emotional.
Prachtig album. Hedendaagse indie-psychedelische Rock.
Really good and chill indie rock album. I found myself less interested in the more Americana/Bob Dylan-esque songs that dominate the 2nd half, but nothing too offensive or unlistenable that would drop the album quality too much. Very fun listen overall. Top tracks: Under the Pressure, Red Eyes, Disappearing
Lots of folks comparing this to Bruce Springsteen or Niel Young & Crazy Horse, but all I'm hearing is early Dire Straits and I'm really enjoying that. Atmospheric, dreamlike, dark and thoughtful.
Very cool indie stuff! Will revisit! 7/10
thought some of the songs may sound the same”same” i really enjoyed listening to the album
Loved it when it came out, still do now. There wasn’t anything else like it at the time, taking influence from Springsteen and 80s heartland rock but making it dreamy and modern. Now loads sounds like it. Great record. Favourite track: burning
Some very nice songs, some too close to Paul Simon. That was definetely worth listening to.
Das hät so bockt i de Nacht bim hei laufe
4/5
Tom petty as the front man for Joy Division. Nice.
Celest x Versekeys Ultra-Sense Planet.
Não conhecia esta banda, gostei imenso.
OVERALL: I could not tell you one song from another, but the journey each brought me through was a lovely fuzzy textured americana experience. What a great album. 9/10 T3: (Will edit later)
4.5
Favorite Track: Red Eyes
This was awesome. I was unfamiliar with this group and this was great.
If Bob Dylan could carry a tune and played with an upbeat band. I was vaguely familiar with The War on Drugs, having heard some of their songs, but never familiarized myself with them more. This was a really solid album, and while it was very enjoyable, the music itself could be a bit simple. 4/5
Very arcade fire WE vibes. I love it.
I totally do get the criticism of this album being one-dimensional Dylan-esque, although to me it always felt more like ethereal Springsteen, but I also cannot help but enjoy it. To a degree, I feel that complete albums should have a similar tone or feel to encompass what the artist is trying to convey. "Red Eyes" was a favorite of mine well before this album popped up on this project so I was already versed in War On Drugs. I respect the artistry and I dig the sound. While, I dont think its an all-time great album, I thoroughly enjoy it. Solid 4.
Vahva albumi! Mulle on suositeltu The War on Drugsia vuosikausia, mut en oo saanu aikaseksi kuunnella rauhassa.
Wau! Mikä tää on?!
Love love love the atmosphere but some of these songs overstay their welcome. I'd also argue that some of this is more Bark Psychosis than Bruce. Still a great listen, though.
It’s that 2010s alterna-rock that sometimes nods to the 80s. I was gifted this vinyl years back and it’s always a good listen.
I liked the sound of this album. You could feel the Springsteen/Neil Young and general Americana roots going through it, but with a modern indie rock sensibility. The vocals did get a little lost in the production sometimes, but generally this was enjoyable, introspective, and easy to listen to.
Buena mierda. Alex tenia razon
I can see the points of some reviews, but I feel like this brings to mind a very specific vibe that is really nostalgic to me. Like it takes me back to being in my early twenties going road trips in the Mojave desert (especially the days that a storm was rolling in). Long-winded way to say it’s a guilty pleasure.
The influences are clearly on display, but I still had a good time listening. An album for a walk on a grey morning. Favourite track: An Ocean in between the Waves
Great night time drive album!
Really good!!!
Ols schoool vibes
Really dug this album and had only heard of the artist in passing. The kind of music I really dig just enveloping me. I'll keep listening to this, no doubt.
always love to get suggested music from an artist i’ve never heard of. beautiful easy listening. favourite song: red eyes
Love it
I really liked this, although I prefer the dreamy soundscapes to the bits where he's singing. I'm not 100% convinced it's a timeless classic that belongs on this list - it may be one of those cases where a critic picked their favourite indie album from the previous couple of years - but it's my kind of thing and I enjoyed it.
Crazy vibey from start to finish. It's kinda indie, kinda psychedelic. I like his voice and it feels like I'm floating through these songs taking in the scenery. I agree with some of the previous reviews that the drum track causes all the songs to blend together a bit. But it just felt so magical. +1 star for sad boy too Low 4
I really liked this album (I’m a fan of indie/alt rock) the songs were great. However I did find that the length hurt it a bit as I had a break to finish it off
I stopped listening to these guys when I followed Kurt Vile into his solo career but I enjoyed this a lot. I’ll need to go into their catalog a bit more.
Chill and just engaging enough
Good album. It relies a lot on the driving drumbeat and you could argue most songs follow the same formula, but it seems intentional and gives the album a consistent, somewhat dreamy feel. An Ocean in Between the Waves was my fave.
Makes me want to do a road trip
This did feel like being lost in a dream, in an enjoyable way. There are Dylan and even Grateful Dead echoes, but The War On Drugs shows more pop discipline. No one song stood out, but the arrangements produce continuous, rolling deep waves of sound.
Hypnotic and cathartic . A high 4 . Excellent
Yeah it’s really taken some growing on me but i’ve settled on a solid 4. I love the ambience, the meandering and wavey journey it takes you on, and many of the songs, but it doesn’t all hit for me and i do find his voice a bit too similar to Dylan inflections-wise which takes me out of it a bit occasionally.
The rare newer album on this list. Indie rock band I know. I enjoy The War on Drugs, but more familiar with their later album A Deeper Understanding. I’ve heard a lot of this, but will give it a proper relisten here. I always thought their sound has a lot of Springsteen in it at times, but seems very dependent on specific song. At its best, this is great music. It’s got that atmospheric sound especially on the first few tracks. Under the Pressure and Red Eyes are probably the standouts. There’s such a full sound on these songs. Prefer the regular rocking sound over the slowed down songs. Really love a lot of that guitar sound on this. One gripe is that I wish the slower songs weren’t so long. It all feels a little bit long in general. This is a tough one to rate. Love a lot of this, but some of it drags a little too long and may be the type of music that is very mood dependent. I’m somewhere between a 3 and 4. Going up with 4.
wiat. the openeing song made me go back in time i feel like im a millenial driving a jeep into the oversaturated sunset
Enjoyed this one, red eyes the favourite, chill rock vibes
I really enjoyed this album. I think I've heard one or two of their songs in the past, but the whole album was pretty good. Nice change from what this list usually feeds me.
*2014. *I've listened to this several times now, and I'm totally digging it. *It's melodic, soft but gritty, and interesting. *Very early 2000s alt - similar to Band of Horses or Minus the Bear or Modest Mouse. *Really good background music for reading. RATING - 8/10
I really loved this album when it first came out--over 10 years ago, which seems hard to believe!--and I still love it now. Passionate, evocative guitar music ftw
Nice
Had no idea this was on the list. Really great atmosphere, it’s a bit long but makes for great background music
Definitely experimental rock but experimental in the sense that it was a bit too out there for the radio. Sonically it’s close to easy listening, very nice to just let wash over you. Saw a review that compared it to Springsteen and I’d say I agree in a weird way.
Great music, not my normal listen, but still very enjoyable. Want to listen to on the dock
gran descubrimiento de banda
A generous 4, heard it a few times now, decent album with some standouts, red eyes is the best
Love this, neo-americana?
all sounds the same in a good way
Interesting. A bit My Morning Jacket, a bit Dylan, a bit Paul Simon, a bit post rock. I’d probably listen to this again. It feels like something that would improve the more you listen and know it.
The first tracks were a nice stroll on the boulevard… overall a nice cozy album!
This album almost feels like one of those summer days that never seem to end, where the weather is perfect and the vibes are immaculate. They are few & far between, and all you can really do is just enjoy the hell out of them. The album isn't quite perfect - it fatigues me more than those summar days do - but it is definitely up there.
This is my first exposure to The War On Drugs and they're pretty decent. Listening to the album, my first thoughts were "This is what people mine when they describe something as an "indie darling," followed closely by "I bet Pitchfork loved this." Sure enough, that site rates this as 8.8 and gave it "Best New Album" back in 2014. It sounds a lot like a modern day version of Springsteen, especially on the track "Burning," but there's also (appropriately, given the title) a dreamlike quality to the instrumentation. The standout track for me was "Suffering," which seems to be the one track none of the other reviews mention. So it goes.
A few songs are a few minutes too long, but I enjoyed this. The sum of its parts makes a very good album
Liked it
This album starts so strong and then chills out a bit. I wish it was way better.
Smashing together Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, and even a little Rod Stewart, TWOD creates a hazy, swirling orchestra of heartland rock sounds that aptly sound exactly like the title would suggest. The soaring anthems of "Red Eyes" and "Burning" mixed with the contemplative musings of "Under thr Pressure" and "An Ocean" create some incredible soundscapes that truly feel like lost summer days hidden between sleep cycles. A wonderful Album indeed.
A fantastic chill rock listen. Background bliss. If you're freaked out, good with kind smoke and a good pair of cans to calm you down. Lotta utility to this album.
I expected a dark and moody album, but was pleasantly surprised to find a solid synth pop album with strong 80s influence. Will likely listen to this again, some time.
Liked this vibe a lot
Very nice love the vibes
chill
Lots of good songs here really great project I'd recommend
shout out ethel cain for priming me to sit through an 8 min song. jokes aside i enjoyed this greatly
Pretty fun listen, honestly. It was a good album, enjoyed this. Probably 3.75 stars.
Totally pleasant. This is not meant as a diss.
I enjoyed the vibe of this album. It is laid back and beautifully produced. I hadn't come across the band before but the music was accessible and provided a great soundtrack for a lazy afternoon
This is an album I should loooooove but I kinda only really like. Kurt Vile’s legacy continues via dreamy Springsteen Americana—it sounds pretty, tho. Honestly a 3.5 but it’s definitely not a 3, so 4 it is..
Some day I’ll be alone in a dark room and throw this on while smoking a doobie and it’ll be 5 stars. But today it’s 4
I may have never read anything more pretentious and self-serving than the (self-posted) artist bio on these guys. This is like low rent Arcade Fire. The length of these songs is depressing. An Ocean In Between the Waves sounds like the listened to Rod Stewart's Young Turks and loved it and wanted to cover it but didn't want to seem lame by covering Rod Stewart. The songs are all too long. Another 80s Rod Stewart-y track. I bet these guys idolize Bruce Springsteen.
dreamy bops reminds me of 2010’s teenage years
Actually really enjoyed this
Chill relaxed record
very chill very 2010s
Hopeful, energetic songs with long instrumentals that get you in the groove
Just good music to listen too.
Great Album, good music.
forgottttt a this one!!!! so good actually
unexpected hit for me, liked the mix of instrumentals and the overall sound
I just knew The War On Drugs by name and had always assumed it would be sort of lo-fi singer/songwritery indie. Did absolutely not expect it to be straightforward rock. I am hearing some Petty and lots of Springsteen ... very pleasantly surprised!
Samey samey but 4 popcorns from the Lewis
I love this album more than is reasonable. I first heard it when i worked in restaurants and the bartender sometimes played it when it first came out. The sound was so immediate for me it’s one of the few occasions I went out of my way to find out who it was. Whatever it is this album is consistently “just so”. It does what I like when I want it to. The atmosphere and noisy bits are just right. The singer’s voice sublime. I just love it.
Pretty chill; I dig it. I had never heard of this artist before. I look forward to listening to this more in the future. Another gem
This album was a hit from the first song. It introduced the overall somber vibe in a great way. It's emotional, beautiful and well composed. Its was nice to dive into front to back. 8/10, Favorite Song: Red Eyes
I had never heard of this album or this band but I quite liked it. It was a little bit pretentious just like me, but very easy to listen to. Everybody seemed to think that it was boring, it didn't really bother me.
Good to actually get a relatively recent album for once. Love the melody for the opener, Under the Pressure, definitely not a radio safe tune but it is awesome! I also enjoyed Red Eyes. Suffering is great too. Burning is my other favourite. In Reverse is great, too. I feel like War on Drugs took inspiration from MBV but stripped out all the egregious bullshit and just ended up with a beautiful record. It has a similar eerie, almost dissonant sound but actually sounds terrific where MBV are garbage.
Always liked their singles, but never heard this album past "An Ocean In Between The Waves", a song I wore out when I discovered it in summer of 2014. I could listen to the outro for that for a whole album straight, I swear This album's a bit of a funny one, it's always kind of teetering on the edge of being overlong in a lot of its songs - and the similarities to Springsteen run the risk of it all sounding a bit stale, not to mention the quite heavy use of drum machine - but there's something about the way the tracks end up locking into a groove that I'm happy to stay within that works so well for me. "Red Eyes" never fails to get me a bit hyped up with the "WOO!" and the lead guitar kicking in, kind of a basic trick but so so good imo Sam Fender's last album's sound owes a lot to this band (Adam from this band did produce it after all!)
Very chill, would have to put this on night time driving playlist.
solid vibe
Ok
I liked it for sinking in and vibing. The long tracks have a way of puling you in and letting you get settled into a groove without thinking. There are times where he feels a little like Dylan over 80's, sure, but it's not unpleasant. My Rating: 4/5
I loved this album back in the day, and it's been probably 8 years since the last time I revisited it. It is a great album, though I agree with the sharpest critics that every song sounds the same.
Look, I love the sound, I love atmospheric space layered …whatever you want to call it. I just wish this one didn’t sound like the same 7 min jam for an entire album. Otherwise, it’d be up there!
From the second I first saw the album cover, I knew this album was going to be great. Lost In The Dream is a beautiful album that I can't believe I've never heard of. Every song was incredible and I felt myself getting emotional a few times while listening. 4.9/5
Like if Dylan and Springsteen had a baby
Pretty cool pretty chill
Great band. Knew this album already. Really up there for me. First heard it round a campfire in Dorset camping with some good pals. Good tunes
Bra! Håller fortfarande. Burning och Red Eyes är bäst. Tycker mycket om detta album.
Perfect for the kind of album it is meant to be, but what kind of album is that? I feel like other reviews, positive and negative, have offered various descriptors that add up to “Dad Rock in space.” For me, a new dad who has most of the Dad Rock canon rolling around in his head at any given time and who always needs more time to spend just staring at the stars, it’s very much appreciated. So why not a 5? In a different rating system it might be a 8.5/10 or a B+ or A- or even “one of the best albums of the 2010s.” But ultimately I want a great record to help me do more than chill, and I have never quite found that side of this one. To me, that makes it a little less than my other go-to chill-out bands like My Morning Jacket or Beach House, who always mix up the vibe just enough to keep you awake. I’m open to the possibility that it’s there on this album too, but I’ve listened to it a lot since it came out and haven’t heard it yet.
I fear this is right up my alley. Gotta have a little sad boi indie every now and again to cleanse the palate. No, this is not the most innovative or impressive album ever made. But damn, it's comforting. I especially appreciate how they take their time, letting the songs build and settle and fade. Big fan. Fave tracks: - Under The Pressure - Red Eyes - Suffering - An Ocean Between The Waves - Disappearing - Eyes To The Wind - Burning - In Reverse
If Bruce Springsteen came out 30 years later he would have definitely been part of the emo movement.
People really loved this album when it came out and I didn't totally get it. I liked revisiting it and found more to like. His lyrics are generally solid and while it hews pretty closely to the dreamy dad rock vibe, there are enough tracks that take the tempo enough to provide a little caffeine - Red Eyes, An Ocean in Between the Waves, and Burning especially.
8/10
2014 – vilken tid!
Great vibe, really felt it for several songs. Some akip tracks, but it was an enjoyable listen.
Really good, great background noise
Had a late 70s early 80s vibe. Good album to listen to while I study.
Americana-influenced 2010s indie rock. New to me but I think I kind of like it. The Springsteen influence is noticeable. I was initially kind of bothered by the presence of a 3-minute instrumental outro on the opening track (at the end of an album I wouldn't blink, but on track 1?), but after getting to know the overall vibe of the album I think it's fine.
Pretty not bad! 4/5
Not smt I would relisten to but I understand why it’s a good album
Before listening to this album, I hadn't heard of the album, the band, or any of the songs on it. Wasn't sure what to expect. I really liked the vibe/sound of the album as a whole. It was very easy to listen to and there were several interesting musical choices that I loved. I also thought that a lot of the melodies and guitar/piano lines were really beautiful. Lots of fun little moments. Truthfully, I didn't really listen to the lyrics, I more just went with my experience listening overall for this one. Maybe I'll revisit in the future.
Nice sounds scape. Way too long though.
Their music just pulls you in. Worth your time!
