Reviews (page 2 of 13)

It occurs to me that, as I listen to Lost In The Dream for the first time (never even heard of it - or the band, for that matter - until now) there is a certain irony to my gut reaction. In my head I'm thinking "why on earth would a band writing new material now choose to make it sound like it was recorded in 1986?" and it dawns on me that when I was enjoying 80s and 90s bands emulating the sounds of the 60s, there were people in the generation above me perhaps equally perplexed by the very same phenomenon. Of course, this album is not "now" it is more than 10 years old, which leads me to another revelation as I approach my 50th birthday: 2024, 2014, 2004 - they all feel pretty much as close to and as far away from "now" as each other. In, fact any music made since the turn of the millennium is filed under "sometime after the 90s" by my brain, and it takes a moment or two focus and really put things into their proper perspective. Don't worry, it will happen to you too. And the upshot is, all of these thoughts, for me, were more interesting than The War On Drugs' music, which washed over me in it's little 80s pastiche way while I was lost in my musings on aging and perception of time, and did little to drag me out of my funk. Which kind of says it all. It's a well done tribute to the music of the past, but it seems - to me at least - pretty devoid of substance, meaning or merit of its own.

This one was a little slow and felt uninspired to my ears. I’m sure it falls into someone’s wheelhouse, but not mine and that’s okay.

Still the worst gig I've ever been to, bored beyond belief... How is this on the list? ಠ︵ಠ

I love some of the songs on this album and they're so good I've never got sick of them. Red Eyes, Under the Pressure, An Ocean Between the Waves. I'd give this a 4 but in doing that I don't really know what albums would deserve a 5 when I like this much about it. Not everything can be Rumours, can it? All this despite hating Dylan who's clearly in there somewhere. Fuck it. 5 it is.

Really enjoyed this album all the way through

I think i fell in love with this album <3

Might be rounding up a bit, since it overstays its welcome a bit, but I have a fondness for this, and feels it evokes an open-road Americana in a way I wish Springsteen or the Eagles did.

Just an absolute classic of the 21st century

Perfekt für en friitignamittag schaffe be 33 grad (fick mis lebe)

Granduciel might be a bit of a prick, but this album fucking slaps. It's a goddamn 5.

"I have to admit, I was already familiar with this album, but listening to it again just confirms its status as an absolute 5/5 masterpiece. Tracks like 'Under The Pressure' and 'Red Eyes' have this incredible, relentless forward momentum that I absolutely love. It perfectly balances that driving, energetic beat with a massive, melancholic 'night-drive' atmosphere. The way the vocals blend into the mix, acting almost like another instrument, creates a dreamy wall of sound that completely pulls you in. A flawless record from start to finish.

I'm familiar with The War on Drugs, or at least one or two of their songs, but have never really listened to them. That being said, I really love this album a lot. In fact, I've listened to it several times over the past day or two and keep falling more in love with it. It has such a cinematic and picturesque and dreamy sound to it, songs that I feel like I can slow down and romanticize my life to. I started doing this album generator at the beginning of the year to find new music and this is exactly what I was looking for. I know it is a 2014 album, but it really reminds me of Bruce Springsteen and the Velvet Underground, there is such a familiar sound that I can't quite place. I am so happy I got the chance to find this album.

Music for old sad people who yearn for better times. Apparently I am old, sad, and yearn for better times

I really do like this album, I became a fan of them when I heard their LIVE DRUGS 2020 live album on the radio and that has a lot of these songs, so I knew many of these going into this listen. I do enjoy the live album more than this studio one but I'll go 5 stars here, it just matched my mood today

I bought this album when it came out because Q magazine said it was the best album of the year (beating AM by Arctic Monkeys). I couldnt get my head around it at the time and thought it only had a couple of good tracks. Listening to it again, I realise how epic this album is. Easy 5 star album!

Funny album because no one track stands out but they are all, across the board so imminently listenable.

Somehow, Dire Straits moved to Philly and became a jam band.

A true favorite of mine. I remember first getting into the band with Slave Ambient, anticipating this release, and being stunned at the leap forward the band took. The way tracks are stretched out here really did wonders for their sound; every song feels like a journey, never staying in one place for long. A perfect album for a long drive through empty landscapes. Standout moment: The gentle rocker “Eyes to the Wind”, particularly the extended wistful outro when the horns come in.

Hermoso descubrimiento

great album, sorta like a tom petty

Instant classic. Adam Granduciel is a genius. His next two albums are also very good.

Bäst är Under the pressure, Red eyes, An ocean in between the waves, Eyes to the wind, Burning. Lost in the dream.

Je me me tanne pas, tellement d’emotions!

Me encantó, no los conocía pero son fabulosos. CD

Nostalgic album for me. Reminds me of road trips through the Scottish highlands, driving past lochs and mountains. A hazy, smokey record of long summer days. He sounds like Dylan, writes like Springsteen, and the drumming is repetitive, but I don’t care. One of my favourites of the last 20 years.

Never heard this album before but what an appropriate title! I know they are grateful dead fans and can hear that in the way they let the songs breathe and flow, but Bruce and Dylan are clearly influences too which is fun (see "burning" and "in reverse" respectively). Loved the sax on the end of "Eyes to the Wind". Low 5

Surreal to see this one here, another one I own on vinyl and in fact bought on release. It’s interesting because in retrospect it does feel like a punctuation mark of sorts on an era of ambient rock sounds (Kurt Vile, Smith-Westerns, Real Estate) with an anthemic streak burning in sprawling song structures. It’s a cool bummer of an album. After this it felt like rock advanced into a more dance- and electronic-inflected mode (Tame Impala’s Currents, St. Vincent’s self-titled).

I love this record. Folky, atmospheric, 80s nostalgia, big.

This album is just beautiful. It feels so deeply authentic in the way his voice is able to portray melancholy, regret, and hope (at least for me). And this is just for his voice, I still want to analyze the lyrics. For me, this is higher than just songwriting, because the instruments along the songs are able to convey so much more. Furthermore, the songs throughout the album are cohesive, but still have their own identity. Love this album

Pretty enjoyable!

Very relaxing, great for road trips.

Rating: 4.8/5 Short Review: Dreamy, expansive, and hypnotically steady. Feels like movement without urgency, just miles passing under you. Warm on the surface, but there’s a quiet loneliness underneath. Favorite Track: “Red Eyes.” That groove just carries you. It builds without forcing anything, like momentum you don’t question.

all-time classic, man i love this album

Wonderful find. Nice atmospheric music. Thoroughly enjoyed. I had never heard of them before. Will listen again for sure

bastant chill

STILL LISTENING! Like the E Street feel, the musicality and the lyrics. Never heard of this group; don't know why but really liked their "feel".

Never heard of these guys before and many of the artists who I was completely unfamiliar with on this countdown have not been great. This album proved to be on the opposite end of the spectrum for me though. The record gets off to a very cool start with Under the Pressure. Is it a bit too long? Yes. Frankly, the last 2+ minutes didn't need to be there. But the first 2/3rds of this track were really strong, especially the rhythm and base lines. This was followed up with another strong tune in Red Eyes. The drums drove throughout this track, pounding and building to a couple of cool crescendos. Excellent. Suffering follows and it's a bit sleeper than the first two, though it has some moments that are cool. Decent track. An Ocean In Between the Waves is a step back in the right direction. The baseline on this really reminds me of some of my favorite songs from Anberlin, a band I really love, or the middle part of Scenic Route by Jars of Clay. It's pulsating and setting the stage at just the right pace. By the time Disappearing comes on, it's pretty easy to settle into who this band is. They very much like longer tracks where they let the instrumentals do the talking, which doesn't bother me at all. One of my favorite artists of all time is Joe Satriani and almost all of his catalog has zero signing. This track doesn't disappoint either. 5 for 5 so far. In listening to Eyes to the Wind, I can't help but feel like there is a bit of Dylan in the lead singer's voice, I just can't really decide if it is Bob or Jakob. Anyway, another sweeping tune that I really enjoyed. Oh, and that sax which comes in late out of nowhere? Well played! At this point, I am astonished I've never heard of these guys, though I get why they aren't on the radio much. These tracks aren't exactly radio friendly, though I am thoroughly digging them. The next track is just kind of filler first one that’s a smidge, disappointing, but not much expected from a song that short. Burning came on and once it dug in, it gave me Young Turks by Rod Stewart vibes, so I instantly liked this as well. It’s not as good as YT, of course, but still very solid. The title track was the only let down for me on this album. It's not unlistenable, but it just didn't do anything for me. That said, we picked back up with In Reverse, which was a very good closer to the record. There's something almost nostalgic to this song, not sure what it was. I can't think of the song it reminds me of, but I know I like it. When it was all said and done, I had taken 7 of the 10 tracks off this record to my personal library and I will definitely come back to this record. Very surprisingly, a 5 star effort.

UNA FUCKING LOCURA

4/3 Really like this one. Very Bruce Springsteen & Bob Dylan-esque with 80s rock. Buying this one for sure

I remember listening to this album when it came out as the band was on the lineup for Gov Ball which I was attending that summer and was blown away. Each time I listen to this record I try to listen in full as it is a great experience end to end.

thats great

Exceptional album. Music and lyrics are both done really well. One of my favorites.

Loved this album, all hits. No misses.

Excellent album!

Best album to drive to

Had never heard of this band before and was completely blown away by this record. The performances are captivating and nuanced. The lyrics were meaningful and poignant. Loved the Americana/folk rock inspired influences. This makes me want to listen to more The War on Drugs. 5

Det verste med dette er at jeg også ser ut som noen som digger The War On Drugs

Really good. Chill sound but very easy to enjoy and nice guitar piano and sax

This was a really nice listen. It had a kind of melancholy vibe that I really enjoyed

(Maybe 4.5 idk)

I really like this 👌🥰

очень классный вайб, напоминающий эстетику наруто, прям аж плакать хочется

Just absolutely magnificent album.

Love the chilled out vibe of this album.

20 jarige bri weer blij

Some bands have "a sound" and some bands have songs that all sound the same. This album rides that line perfectly. Something I almost never say: "I wish this album were longer." Its great to sit and focus on, it's great in the background.

Phenomenal

Under The Pressure - Loving the opening, very interesting, I really like the way the vocals are, I don't usually like this much instrumentation but I'm kind of loving this Red Eyes - Really nice voice Suffering - Wow this one just feels like lonliness does An Ocean In Between The Waves - Awesome guitar parts Disappearing - Genuinely incredible. I have nothing else to say. Possibly perfection Eyes to the Wind - So gorgeous The Haunting Idle - I don't usually like instrumental tracks but it's so perfectly ambient. It feels a respite, but not a happy one. The world sucks and I know that but we're going to take a break from it Burning - First one that I feel like was boppy. Maybe a single? Still good though Lost in the Dream - Idk it's just good In Reverse - I really love the instrumentals on this Genuinely amazing album. No flaws. I don't even usually like instrumentals or interludes but this does it so well and I think it really conveys the emotions that it means to.

I am not at all hearing the Springsteen thing...hmmm, am I deaf. I've seen "The War on Drugs" at numerous summer fests and I can say they are always a highlight. If not for K. Vile, this would be my favorite K.Vile-sonic sound I'd be listening to at all hours and to the chagrin of my poor, suffering at all hours loud blast from my man-den wife. She loves War on Drugs as well, especially when we are at peace with drugs and high as the birds....

Great!!

I got hooked in the 2nd half of Under the Pressure - the breakdown and the buildup are godly. The rest of the album were a mix between Bruce Springsteen and Boards of Canada. I liked very much the musical textures, giving this a 5 star for now because I believe this will grow on me.

A soaring, tender, beautifully engineered album

I admit the drums are pretty dull, but how good is literally everything else? One of the best bands of its time.

18-jarige ik was destijds helemaal overdonderd door de hypnotiserende riffjes en dromerige minutenlange outtro's op deze plaat. Lost In The Dream is vervolgens nooit lang weggeweest over de jaren heen. Af en toe gooi ik Under The Pressure gewoon weer eens aan en voor ik het weet kickt de grootse en toch persoonlijk en ingetogen hook van In Reverse alweer in. Echt een schitterend album.

Love this album. It’s just an amazing ride through a chill guitar dad rock. Full 5/5

This was really good! Very long, but very good. I don't think it's something I'd return to, but it was an amazing theatrical experience. Just a taaaad bit too long. 7/10

Wow. I really like this album. I’ve heard of this band for years and thought I’d heard their actual music but I was wrong. It’s funny and interesting that I didn’t like the Clash album because it was too repetitive, but one thing I noticed about this album is that there seems to be a lot of Clash influence. From stat to finish, every song is so easy to listen to and I’m sure it gets more enjoyable the more you listen/more familiar you are with the songs and lyrics.

This ruled

how many albums in and i finally get a nice surprise?

a win for depressed kids everywher

It was such a chill album and I enjoyed it thoroughly 5/5

Three or four songs in, I felt like this was a reasonably solid four, but then "An Ocean in Between the Waves" pushed me up to five, and the rest of the album didn't change my mind. I think I was in the right mood for this today.

A pleasant surprise

I've listened to this one before! 10/10 beautiful sounds

Ugh the spacey guitars and anthemic quality of this is soooo good how have I never heard of this album before!! Reminded me of the Blue Nile and Prefab Sprout at some parts

Very few pieces of media make me feel the way that Lost in the Dream made me feel. Took me back to the summer between high school and college, that in-between time where my friends and I felt invincible. Where independence could flourish. Where responsibilities were completely tossed out the window, and stress didn't exist. Maybe the last time where it truly felt like everything was going to be alright. What else can I say about this album that hasn't already been said. It's a masterpiece. The instruments are masterfully mixed. Nothing feels out of place. The folksy, alternative, atmospheric sound is perfect. My first exposure to the war on drugs, and definitely not my last. First album on this list that made me want to drive to my nearest record store and look for this album

"Eyes to the Wind" was exceptional. The whole album has this driving-with-the-windows-open-in-the-mountains feel. Surprised by how much I liked this!

This is an album I have loved for a long time. Part of that love might be from listening to it as a teenager in high school while smoking weed with my friends. Something nostalgic about it for me.

One of my favourite bands... and this album just appear yesterday in a moment when I thoroughly needed it.

This album was a surprise. Reading the themes were loneliness and depression I was expecting to suffer through this like I did through albums by The Cure. Not the case here. This was a well crafted album from start to finish and I greatly enjoyed it. 5/5

Its really good, nostalgic 2010s

This record is a fascinating and not-so-subtly devastating snapshot in time of frontman Adam Granduciel's emotional state. The album takes little pleasure in the pain, but holds a magnifying glass to it in spite of itself, picking away at the disquiet and depression like a frayed thread on a jumper sleeve, as if preparing to unravel the whole garment at any moment. The album's first three singles, 'Red Eyes', 'Under the Pressure', and 'Burning' conjure an image of a broken star, wrestling with the weight of heartache and disillusion with reality, like Bruce Springsteen on SSRIs. Sitting at almost nine minutes long and serving as the album opener, the aforementioned 'Under the Pressure' sets the tone for what is to come as an Americana-fuelled rock opus fraught with angst. The other two songs carve out similarly shimmering and churning cries for help. 'An Ocean in Between the Waves' tears along with a blisteringly lovesick Motorik pace, while 'Eyes to the Wind' rolls out as a jangly, midtempo pastoral ballad that, thanks to Granduciel's reedy yet wistful voice soaked in mist, a whispery tenor tinged with a Dylanesque drawl, really tugs at the heartstrings. A slight sonic excursion appears halfway through the album in the form of 'Disappearing', a glistening psychedelic detour with its guitar and synth tones gently cascading over echoing drums, evoking the simultaneously vulnerable and romantically powerful Eighties' sounds of artists such as Kate Bush or the Eurythmics. The only instrumental track, 'The Haunting Idle' occupies the latter half of the album as a sullen, undulating post-rock pitstop that reverberates with tension. The final track, 'In Reverse' starts as a minimalist brood over faraway guitars and translucent synths that erupts into a countrified ballad leaving only a little to be desired in its lack of true resolution. Yet this is not an album of grand epiphany; on the contrary, Granduciel isn't afraid to simply wallow in the darkness, touch raw nerves, let the songs fill the space and leave some hard open questions unanswered.

Really enjoyed this. Very indie #mykindofvibe

I was listening to the album in the background when Burning and Lost in the Dream really grabbed me. Then In Reverse, definitely shades of Dire Staits. I'm gonna go back and give it an attentive listen. Have to decide which way the the 4.5 I'd give it now will go. An Ocean in Between the Waves is an excellent hard driving song. This album would be a great accompaniment on a long drive.

Such a good album from start to finish! Under pressure is a banger

Amazing

I enjoyed this. There's something therapeutic about the whole experience I can't place.

🚬...

Kannte ich noch nicht. Finds cool v.a. under the pressure

This is one of my all time favourites - a perfect record. I’ve listened to it 1001 times.

I first discovered this album after hearing my daughter play “Red Eyes,” and I was hooked enough that she bought me the vinyl. The whole record has a very laid-back, dreamy vibe—perfect for sinking into on a quiet evening. It’s spacious and textured, with layers that feel almost hypnotic at times. People often mention Springsteen comparisons, but I don’t really hear that here; it’s more about atmosphere than anthems. A beautiful, immersive listen that rewards patience.

this is a very nice album. I haven't done a lot of listening to these guys before, or kurt vile. but I get it now. spinning on repeat. probably my favourite album so far.

As far as I’m concerned this is one of the all time great rock albums. It’s an album that you could drop in any decade between the late 60’s and 2020’s and it would sound amazing, and many years would have been a chart smashing hit. It’s like Blood On The Tracks with a few more electric guitars and droning synths. It starts with a juggernaut opening track in Under The Pressure, a perfect song. If you don’t like the droning outro you probably just haven’t listened to it enough. An epic song opening track would distract from many albums, but it follows with the equally great Red Eyes, which adds some fun to what could be considered a depressing party. There’s a come down after the highs of UTP and Red Eyes with Suffering, and I think that’s intentional. It’s a good chance to catch your breath before An Ocean Between The Waves, another epic track that goes by faster than its 7 minutes suggests. From there is a consistently good second half that concludes with the incredible In Reverse, which has one of the albums best moments when the chorus kicks in. A stunning album that has an argument as the best of the 2010’s.

I really like this, I was studying for my upcoming exam, and this was exactly the music that fit my mood. Debating between 4/5 and 5/5. But I will return again, and add this to my liked albums.

Somehow this band had completely escaped me until now. This album is fantastic and one I will listen to again and again for sure. I'll probably have more to say about this album later on, but for now, just fantastic.

This album truly lives up to the name. Feels like a dream that I don’t want to wake up from. War on drugs is usually a top artist of the year for me and will continue to be for a long time.

I really , really enjoyed this listen. Brought me back to what it was like to discover the wonders of music for the first time. The soundstages were incredible you could tell the Springsteen / Dylan / Floyd influences throughout. Will keep this in rotation. 9/10

Solid album with great songwriting.

Instant classic.

I'm pretty sure that I've never listened to this album before, but it feels like I've loved it my whole life.

soo epic

Atmospheric rock. Sometimes sounds like a mix between Pink Floyd and Smiths. Loved the guitar solos.

My new fave album! Amazing!

Colour me impressed - like Elliot Smith without the grit and sprinkled in ambient and polished

- valmistautukaa viiden tähden arvioon, i fucking love this album - tän bändin löytäminen flow festareilla on yks mun elämäni kauneimmista kokemuksista, ja se tapahtui juuri tämän levyn kiertueella - lämmin toiveikkuus joka näistä albumin biiseistä huokuu on aivan mieletöntä

This was an extremely emotional listen on a rainy bus journey home through Edinburgh.

LOVEDDDDD OMG

Fantastic

savršeno

A favorite of mine. Sounds both incredibly classic but also all on its own somehow. Reminds me of everything, but still has so much its own sound. Love it.

This album is one of those rare ones that feels less like a collection of songs and more like a place you step into. It’s drenched in atmosphere, with shimmering guitars, steady drum patterns, and vocals that seem to drift in and out like smoke. Everything is layered in a way that builds a kind of endless horizon, and once it starts, it’s almost impossible not to get swept along. There’s a bittersweet calmness here, the kind that lingers long after the record ends. What makes it so striking is how seamless it all feels. Tracks like “Under the Pressure,” “Red Eyes,” and “An Ocean in Between the Waves” are sprawling but never lose their momentum. The songs don’t rush to make a point; they breathe, they stretch, they let the emotion build slowly. There’s a real sense of movement throughout the album, like a long drive where the scenery keeps changing but the feeling stays the same. It’s a record that works as both a deep listen and a quiet companion. The textures are rich, the melodies are subtle but powerful, and the mood never wavers. Lost in the Dream captures a kind of restless yearning that’s hard to put into words, and it does it with effortless grace. It’s one of those albums that doesn’t just play in the background — it settles into your bones.

A great, moody album. Maybe moody isn't the right word but the somber feeling that communicates the pressure of depression, it's expertly portrayed on this album. It all sounds excellent, and the album is an introspective one without being too sad to listen to.

An integral part of any Australian teenager's music mix. What a beautiful album. Full of humanity and layering of pleasant sounds, a blessing for the ears and soul. A complicated, restless, slightly neurotic band leader meant this album is the product of a year-long, gruelling process of recording, revising and scrapping. But man does it pay off. I think it is the band's most lustrous, intricately detailed and beautifully rendered record to date. This is an album that reminds me to invest in good headphones. Older albums are remastered and reformed to be perfectly registered in a portable device. This album does not need any revisions; it is utterly perfect.

Solid!

Listening to this album as a whole really opened my eyes to this band. Combines everything I love in music.

This is an absolute delight, which I’d never heard before. There’s a very 80s tone to some of the songs, very lush and layered, but it’s also kind of sad.

This album makes me want to do drugs which seems like a common side effect of things called war on drugs. I can imagine the exact show they would put on and I want to go. His voice is just so cozy and their sound is so comforting.

I caught on to this one a couple of years after its release, but just in time to help me process what 2016 wrought on this country and my state of mind. Perfectly chill

Restful rock is what I call this genre. Loved it. Nighttime plane ride looking out the window took this to the next level.

Fantastic album, such a classic 70s sound, perfectly combined with modern sound and production.

Like a moody ambient dream. Moving flawlessly in and out of sleepy rock through lackadaisical Americana. This is an amazing album full of stellar tracks. Stoner gold.

got lost in this dream

I had some mild skepticism at first, but this is a beautiful record. Give it some time and it will get into your bones.

Reminded me of Bob Dylan and Tom petty

Самый дримовый хартлэнд рок, что я слышал. Срочно нужно на виниле.

Lovely!

Dazzling must hear album from a wonderful band

Very much my style of music. Enjoyed the easy going nature of some of the songs, will absolutely listen again.

I love this album. Easy 5 stars. It is a masterpiece of songwriting, performing and recording. I saw another review call it "Don Henley as performed by The Killers" and they may be on to something...but if it is a guilty pleasure, I'm not complaining! I just connect with the music and have ever since I saw their Tiny Desk Concert during the pandemic. My wife and friends have a joke with me - whenever a song by this band comes on, they go "hey it's that one War on Drugs song!" (because a lot of them do sound quite similar). I think the hits tend to have that common anthemic Springsteen 80's thing but there is a lot more depth to their records and this is a great example of it. The production here is just amazing and to me this is really an album you can sit inside of and hang out for a while.

An excellent album that completely passed me by until now. Steeped in 1980s American AOR without slipping into that decade’s worst production mistakes. A lot of the album is vocally and musically reminiscent of The Waterboys, particularly the opening “Under the Pressure”, which stretches to 9 minutes including a wonderful dreamy ambient coda, and “Eyes to the Wind”, a lovely track with a nice saxophone solo. There are other influences evident in songs like “Disappearing” (Tango in the Night-era Fleetwood Mac; atmospheric, etherial guitars and keyboards, drum machines), “An Ocean in Between the Waves” (Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and, especially, “Boys of Summer” by Don Henley). There is not a bad track on the album but other highlights include “The Haunting Idle” which is truly haunting with freeform drones and ambient guitars and keys. “Suffering” is slow and deliberately paced, and really powerful. All these influences could be really messy in less-skilled hands but Adam Granduciel corrals everything into a homogeneous sound that is familar yet also new. I loved this.

Im enjoying their sound. They remind me of another band ive heard but I cant think of who

Oh. My. God. I’ve heard about The War On Drugs, but never actually heard The War On Drugs before. I am so glad this came up on here. A fantastic album from start to finish.

It usually my thing, but really enjoyed that

One of the definitive bands of my 30s. What else is there to say? It’s a 5!

Over the past 2 or 3 years this has been one of my go-to background albums. The mood is ambiguous enough it's really suiting for any occasion. I love the driving rhythm and reverb soaked layers of effect heavy guitars. Something about their sound is super nostalgic. I also think these guys have found a niche of music that not alot of new bands are still trying to make. Guitar driven rock and roll but with the hooks. It's like if most new bands were painting pop art or graffiti, just trying to grab the viewers attention, these guys are over in the corner painting a landscape.

I spent my morning snuggled in a reclining chair with my toddler watching the sun rising above a lake while listening to this album. So that’s going to factor pretty favourably into my review. The War on Drugs have been a long time favourite of mine. I’ve always thought they kind of sound like a mix of Springsteen and Dylan with Wilco as a backing band.

Hørt endel på før - veldig bra

Love this album and this has given me a reason to revisit it. First discovered it during covid and played it on repeat. An Ocean Between The Waves is outstanding but the whole album is gold. Tough one to rate as I only give 5 stars to faultless classic albums but this is better than a 4 star. It’s a 9/10 so gotta round up to 5.

I really dig this album. It's a solid 5! It was the perfect music to listen to when working at a cafe on an overcast day. War on Drugs remind me a lot of Destroyer—fresh, super mellow, with a beat that pushes forth. Fav songs: - An Ocean In Between the Waves 🌊👌 - The Haunting Idle P.S. I like that the music label is called "Secretly Canadian"

This album still holds up for me. Great listen for a quiet, rainy Saturday. Yes, the inspirations are pretty obvious. Yeah, it's an album with kind of "one note". And I'll never understand why people criticize bands for that. One of two VMP pressings that I'm sorry I missed.

“An ocean between the waves “ and “burning” make this album

love it

Really good

Incredible album. Must listen

5 stars. Modern classic. A sonic kaleidoscope of American heartland rock, folk, and even some shoegaze, with a nice 80’s-music patina. A perfect roadtrip album, and one that I come back to a lot.

10/10 vibes

A genuinely wonderful album, with plenty to enjoy for those that like Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, or those who enjoy ambient music

Amazing

Always been a fan of this one! Brilliant album, one of my favourites

Great discovery for me, I loved it!

имба.

I skipped listening to this album....because this is my third favourite album of all time. I've listened to it hundreds of times. I don't think I've ever been able to listen to any one song on this album without listening to the entire album. It's a fantastic album.

I really liked it a lot. I could listen to it all the time

awesome

Great indie psych album

I’m at a 5; maybe a little higher. This is a hard one to try and distill, because for the most part, I think you could get away with listening to this album with your eyes closed, just to catch the vibes & overall tone of it, and you’d still probably capture at least 70-80% of the essence of this thing. It’s an album where sound design tells most of the story, with the lyricism acting as texture to enhance and specify the mood, but not as something crucial, at least not until specific points in each of the songs. His Bob Dylan-y vocals add a bit as well, to portray some of the emotion, but you could just as easily blend it into the soundscape (and this album DOES do that a handful of times). The 20 to 30% of this album where the lyricism feels more crucial (but again, not overly so) adds a lot of texture to my brain that just hammers the track home. Take a track like “An Ocean in Between the Waves”; it’s about losing sight of someone because of being buried down under a pile of stress, and being unable to fully recognize them because of it. It’s a little hard to parse from just listening, but I do think the instrumental provides so much of the necessary information to get there, and the lyricism is what hammers it down. The same applies to a track like “Eyes to the Wind”, where the lyricism expresses a sense of social dejection & self-inflicted loneliness, but the instrumental still tells so much of the story. “Burning” is the point of the album where a sense of clarity is reached, and in many ways, it’s the climax point of the album, one where you could arguably just end it and have a satisfying 8-track narrative. The entire buildup, starting from “The Haunting Idle”, is REALLY well done, and once the tension releases itself, THAT’S the clarity point. Once again, the lyricism hammers home the track; it feels like being “released” from the clutches of this relationship has fully untethered him from some of his stress & tension. The clarity point hit for me as a listener too; while the framing of these songs have all made it seem like a relationship with a woman, it’s almost certainly been about his relationship with himself – his “release” here is an intentional choice to pick himself up and get past the demons in his life. The narrative is extremely obvious in retrospect, but it reframed so much of the album for me. The soundscape on this track, with the super triumphant tone, tells that story all the same, and they work hand-in-hand very nicely. I *love* the choice to not end on “Burning”, though. The last two tracks are more of an epilogue based in introspection, and they cap off the album in a way that feels like well-needed therapy past the storm, to try and truly seal those inner demons away for good. The clarity that comes after “Burning” gives the last two tracks a bit more lyrical clarity as well, but they’re still very driven by their soundscapes. “Lost in the Dream” is about self-love being a catalyst to open the windows to the soul, made specifically for the people who are most intimately in your life to see through. It’s done through the simple observance of a soldier lost in a daydream, and the curiosity of wanting to know his thoughts. It’s very lyrical, and it’s the most Bob Dylan-y song on the album, by far. However, there’s still something in the soundscape itself that aids the storytelling of the album. It’s that clarity popping up again. It’s just so much calmer. Even if you ignore the lyricism here, the difference from “Burning” to “Lost in the Dream” is still kinda striking from just an instrumental standpoint. “In Reverse” is very Eno-y to start, and once it really drops, it reveals itself as a good blend of “Burning” & “Lost in the Dream” from an instrumental standpoint. Lyrically, while it’s a little hard to parse, there’s a simple framing that makes the entire track make sense: he’s still talking to himself. It’s his “darker” depressed self giving a sort of goodbye to his “brighter” happier self, as the darkness fades away, at least for now. That “war” in the first line is just the first 8 tracks. The vestiges of that “darker” soundscape fading out to end the album tells the story all the same, and it puts a great bow on the entire thing. Of course, a lot of this is still interpretative, and I’ve sure made it sound like the lyrics give far more than they do, but I promise; this is an album where you can just listen and pick up on the overall mood swings, and that story from just the instrumentals & production alone is still extremely satisfying. To put it bluntly, I think you can get lost in the dream & still get most of this album. It’s a little artsy, perhaps, but it’s the type of artsy that’s right down my alley. I think it’s worth the acclaim, I think it’s worth being on the list, and I think it’s another example of the sort of stuff I missed out on in the 2010s. It’s a highly recommended album, and an easy 5 for me, if a little higher.

Nothing else sounds like this, and I get why that's a problem for some people who are searching for some context. The reality is that this is just ambient chaos. A blend of sounds that seek to explore emotion, explore what a melody could be. It's lovely and captivating.

This is a beautiful album, one that overcame me with emotion listening to it. It felt perfect for the end of summer, that melancholy departure of warm days on the beach in favor of an approaching autumn chill. Honestly makes me wish I had a convertible, so I could play this while driving with the top down along a coastal highway. I think I’ll have to listen to this one again soon.

Great album that particularly resonated with me today. I wouldhappily have left it on repeat play all day.

Love it, can’t believe over 10 years old

Really enjoyable album. I'd like to see them live.

Loved this one

En av mine favorittalbum i nyere tid, helt magisk

All of The War On Drugs albums are well worth a listen but this is the one where everything really comes together. The first thing to note is that it's not an album where everything hits at once. These are songs that are long and unhurried, to me it feels like an old fashioned album that rewards repeated listens and grows on you over time. I can see why it isn't for everybody and you have to have the time to really soak it all in. Last thing, this record has the perfect title for what it sounds like.

I already know and love The War on Drugs so this is an easy 5 for me. This is the perfect music to listen to while driving through the woods

Great listen from start to finish. Have always liked what I've heard from them but never listened to an album straight through. Fantastic stuff.

It is a blended and exceptional album. Song styles range from remnants of Dire Straits to Bob Dylan. Sound blending is amazing and it is worth a listen time and again.

Good album. Very calming. Felt like a music that you listen to when walking around cityscape at night; observing, listening, and enjoying the living night full of people.

One of my favs have this one on vinyl already Incredible.

Fantastic album from start to finish.

2014 Philadelphia. Indie rock, Americana, psychedelic rock, heartland rock. !!!!!

I liked the music in this album.

I've had this on my phone for a few months on the advice of my brother, who told me to listen to "Red Eyes." I hadn't listened to it all the way through until today. I really liked this! I do think all the songs sound the same but I dig the sound. The throwback rock sound makes me nostalgic as this sounds like something my dad would have liked.

was walking down the pretty park with the stunning sunset, so this album made me feel like i’m in a video clip. 5/5 want to experience it again

I adore this album. One of my favorites. I listened to that album a ton in grad school in this coffee shop while studying. It takes me right there 10/10

4.5 Wow. This is one of the best 80s albums I've heard. I wished I hadn't seen the year on Spotify before listening to it because I'd have been blown away. Drawn on so many inspirations, some of which I like (Dylan, Young), some of which I don't (Springsteen) and blends them into something that is so much better than the sum of the parts. First track immediately grabs you. Possible the highlight of the album, but it never really dips far from there. My one gripe is the second half of the album, the last 5 tracks certainly not as strong as the first 5. Eyes to the wind and Burning are for example a bit too Springsteen esque, without the other parts that actually make it interesting. Still, excited to explore more of this band.

loved it

I really enjoyed. Felt like a journey

Love TWOD

I LOVE TWOD

Fucking great.

If Bob Dylan was good.

it's a rare day when there's an album with a 1 hour+ runtime and I don't get bored or agitated

Soft rock with that ambient, spacey feel. This probably isn’t up a lot of people’s alleys, but it is up mine.

5/5, i absolutely love this album. Great listen from start to finish

f the haters, I love this record

Fantastic

I really loved this album. I remember I listened to this album once before and I didn’t think much of it, but returning to this now I guess I notice many things I didn’t back then. I loved the ambiance of this, the extended ‘soundscapes’ I guess you’d call them. The opener is probably my favourite, but Red Eyes, An Ocean In Between The Waves, Burning and In Reverse are great as well. This slow, mellow vibe was just perfect for a Monday morning bus ride.

Wow. I am completely blown away by this record. This is perfect. Maybe it’s because of the moment I am listening to it but I am sure it is great nevertheless.

Lost in the Dream is a beautifully immersive album that feels like one long, hazy road trip through nostalgia, melancholy, and hope. From start to finish, it’s a consistently great listen; layered with shimmering guitars, dreamy synths, and Granduciel’s distant, Dylan-esque vocals. There’s a kind of meditative consistency to it that’s both a strength and a minor drawback; the songs tend to blend together after a while, but it’s hard to complain when they’re all good. It’s one of those albums that invites you to get lost in it, and chances are, you won’t mind staying a while.

album longo demais, a sonoridade é boa mas pra que um album com musicas de 8 minutos? bfr

SO good! Chill summer vibes and reminds me of Outer Banks.

Really enjoyed this. For never having heard it before it gets an audacious 9/10

Really good listening.

This is the first album before a long pause, and it's motivated me a lot to keep going. It's got a melancholic but still optimistic vibe that makes it very easy to revisit on quiet days where you do not know what you are doing

At some point in the 2010's, a friend of mine told me to listen to this album. He described The War on Drugs to me as 'your new favorite band.' He'd said the same thing to me about The National a couple of years before this, and he was spot on, so I decided to listen to this album. I immediately fell in love with this album, and it's an album that I return to very often. I know this album like the back of my hand, and I'd easily list as one of my favorites of all time. But enough of my introductory rambling. Let’s get lost in the dream! I’m always struck by just how beautiful this album is. From those opening clicks and piano notes of “Under The Pressure” to the closing notes of “In Reverse,” I’m just in love with every part of this album. Listening to The War on Drugs reminds me of Bruce Springsteen, Dire Straits, and Bob Dylan, and on this particular album, it reminds me of Rod Stewart’s “Young Turks.” I always find myself completely consumed by the dreamlike atmosphere of this album, and it’s a feeling that’s truly a treat to embrace. The guitar playing, various pianos and synths, and vocals are all perfect on this album. The songwriting is fantastic too. This album is full of songs that I love, but even the ones that I enjoy a little bit less still have a perfect home on this album. Take “Suffering” for example: it’s sandwiched between “Red Eyes” and “An Ocean Between the Waves,” two of the best songs on the album. “Suffering doesn’t have the blending of pianos and guitars or the restrained energy of the two songs on either side of it, but it has beautiful horns and piano playing that fit perfectly between those two faster paced songs. Back to those vocals though. Adam Granduciel’s singing is absolutely perfect on this album (and every War on Drugs album I’ve listened to). I know his voice is reminiscent of Bob Dylan, but to my ear, it’s more of a combination of Dylan and Mark Knopfler. I love the way he paces out his words, creating gaps in his singing while the arrangements are almost always full of beautiful sounds. That contrast works so well for me. As much as I love the first half of the album, the second half is incredible too. “Eyes to the Wind” is another beautiful, slow ballad, with some fantastic piano playing, and the instrumental “The Haunting Idle” is a perfect lead-in to “Buring.” “Burning” reminds me so much of Rod Stewart’s “Young Turks,” but “Burning” still feels incredibly unique on its own. “Burning” just creates a sense of longing and nostalgia in me that I really love. I could go on and on about how much I love this album, but I’ll close by saying that I listened to this three times before writing my review, and I enjoyed every second of it. Lost in the Dream is one of my favorite albums of all time, and I’m so glad I got to revisit it today.

Sensationell - I love it! One of my favorite Bands.

Interesting indie rock.

Great album. Connected with lyrics and great guitars. I’ll have saved this one as one gem discovered .

5/5. An ethereal and shoegaze-y album inspired by 70's and 80's rock is not something you find every day. The songs go on for 5+ minutes usually with minimal lyrics and just backing guitar riffs and solos sometimes. When I first heard the album when it first came out a while ago, I don't think I quite felt like it was for me. As the years have gone by, and my listening has diversified, I can hear and appreciate the influence and excellent songwriting. This is such a great road trip album while also being a good one to just let it wash over you in headphones. The production is fantastic and you can hear the passion in his voice. Glad I had a chance to revisit this one. Best Song: Under The Pressure, Red Eyes, Burning, An Ocean In Between The Waves

Biased review/score as a big fan, I think Adam Granducial is a modern day genius, this record is great, the vocals are Dylan-esque, heavy 80s Springsteen vibes in the drums/synths. But it's mixed with shoegaze/dream-pop to create this beautiful wall of sound. The pace of record is great, big synth/guitar driven hits mixed with slower more introspective songs.

So calming and relaxing. Loved the whole album, vibes similar to khrungabin. Easy listening

Amazing

Rad as hell. Big fan of it. Like being embraced by a softer, more ethereal album by The Replacements. Spent the weekend listening to this album and it’s grown on me even more. Probably my favorite so far.

Is this prog rock? Idk. Chill, atmospheric, easy to listen to. Would revisit.

Exceptional.

Wonderful production value and catchy songs.

One of the most beautiful albums I've ever listened to, pure magic

Dreamy. Really love the vibes. Can imagine playing this album in the summer, chilling in a car with the roof down, feeling the warm breeze. Love the production. Groovy beats. Cool synths. The melodies are so nice to listen to. Kinda giving a cross between Bob Dylan and Sam Fender. Songs are long but I don’t mind that, they keep me hooked. I will listen to this again.

Ten seconds into the first track, I knew I was going to love the album. In spite of the reverb, I felt like I could make out all of the instruments and I really enjoyed the long outros. Sometimes I like that kind of thing, especially in this kind of psychedelic music. Bops throughout.

Cracker! Great driving record as well.

perfect album

amazing album, very creative, good ambience (95/100)

Love this album - Bob Dylan meets Bruce Springsteen

Sublime, atmospheric, melancholic majesty. Traces of Dylan, Springsteen and Bon Iver combine to make for a wonderful album.

Ja, dit is gewoon perfectie he. En het is niet eens hun beste album. 5.0

Top album. Love this.

I liked my wife didnt

Perfect album from one of my favorite bands.

Can’t believe I just found this band last year. Instantly became a favorite of mine. So good

this album was just an absolute beauty. it mixes sort of that classic indie rock sound with elements of post-rock, ambient, psychedelic, glitch, grunge, singer-songwriter, and many more. Probably one of my favorite albums I've heard this year.

classic sound

Really enjoyed this album. IMO the 2010s were the best decade for alt Rock and I love being able to here the 90s alt rock influences

I’m a big TWOD fan and I think this, along with the album A Deeper Understanding, is their best work. The close out track “In Reverse” is a perfect end to a truly fantastic album and, while I would (and do) listen to it in isolation sometimes, it always hits harder when listened to as part of a whole album start to finish listen.

Bojack type-shi Love it Depressing and sad On a journey

Really Fantastic! Five stars.

This album was exactly what I needed after a very bad weekend. My best experience with a new album yet, I think.

Brilliant

This is vibe. 10 out of 10! When I turned on the first track, I thought it was kind of normal, but somehow it doesn't catch on. He didn't turn it off. And then by minute 10 of listening, it hit me like it came from a bong. I've rethought my whole life. It's like a psychotherapy session or a good smoke break.

Best band since the 70s. Brilliant. I love this.

No skips. This is the porchetta of albums—so velvety rich! At times Rod Stewart’s full-bodied sound, at others Dylan’s weary lyricism, plus some Springsteen-y sad harmonica. These guys reallllly take the time to let a moment land, which is forgivable when the product is this good.

Luminous. Intricately detailed. Grandiose. Brian Wilson by way of Springsteen. The craft is undeniable. But it also moves you. This album started a run as impressive as any in the modern rock sphere - such that it is. A true album that ebbs and flows as a single piece. They manage this trick as a live act as well as any band I have ever seen - each crescendo building and retreating, adding layers with each revolution until they achieve lift off - only a few feet off the ground but defying gravity nonetheless.

For an 80s kid, this feels like slipping into an old familiar sweatshirt ... preferably with D.A.R.E on the front. One of my favorite Onion headlines of all time is: Stoners Declare Victory in the War on Drugs. Yes, the good guys won, and this album is perfect for driving fast on the highway or ripping down the slope on your shred stick on a bluebird day ... with nowhere to go and nowhere to be ...

great atmosphere

This one really grew on me. It’s way more than the sum of its parts. Perfect album for driving through snowy woods.

Brandon Flowers core

I love this album. Incredible guitar work over excellent melodies.

All time greatest. Just an amazing sound, iconic, ownable. Reminds me of stephanie garges hanging out in oakland.

The fucking shit, ich bin irgendwo, nur nicht hier

Listened to this on my flight, it was very lovely.

喜歡,有搖滾的活力卻又不過分張揚,編曲也很流暢但不流俗。

I might be biased but.. This album was on my former "sleeping playlist", which I heard in excess of 300 times. Had to hear it on vinyl.... and a few times during the day. So happy this album is on this list. It's just great throughout.

Under the pressure indeed

Not quite as good as “A Deeper Understanding”, but still a mighty fine album. 4.5 (but rounding up :P)

very indie, very 2010, very much enjoyed (a song was in Paper Towns, and we know how annoying i feel about that)

I couldn't figure out who it reminded me of, but I really dug the vibe of this. A little grunge-y new alternative kind of feeling? Will re-visit TWOD for sure after this

General impression: one of my favorites from a decade ago, holds up amazingly Detailed review: I knew I loved this album, but I haven’t revisited it a whole lot since the year it came out for some reason, and going back to it, I was right to love it. Wow, it’s an incredible heartland indie-rock album, one of the best ever made, I think. Almost every song hits, and the best ones, like “An Ocean in Between the Waves” and “Under the Pressure” and “Disappearing” (at least half the tracklist honestly) are totally stunning in sound, production, performance, and songwriting. The words are deeply felt and sung. The guitar solos are the bleeding heart of the album. Everything feels true and right. Deeper thoughts (context): Hasn’t been topped by anything in the genre to come out since. Score: 4.9 (5 for this list) Number of albums left to review: 971 Number of albums from the list I’d consider “must-listens”: 17 (including this one) Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 13

Really liked and lead singer's voice is a bit reminiscent of Bob Dylan.

Perfection

Banger

5 - absolutely incredible, every track, I’ll find this sometime later in life when I really need it and it’ll get me down and up again. Last song gives me duck worth vibes and I’m sure there’s more to it

Fantastic. Love these guys. Great find

added in the favs

Very very enjoyable vibesy music! Really enjoyed this one

Maybe it’s just that I’m in the mood for this, because I am also finding myself in a position where I am isolated, depressed, and just feeling weird about myself, but the long enveloping soundscapes of Lost In The Dream really appealed to me. The best way I can think to describe it is like an Americana version of Disintegration. And anybody who knows me knows how I feel about Disintegration

Such a great album!

Really enjoyed this selection. Surprised I had never heard of The War on Drugs.

Couldn't listen the whole album, but the songs I know are fantastic.

Longer tracks that leave room to breathe and explore the atmospheric soundscape. Album hit me on the perfect day, although I feel I would have enjoyed anyhow. Gives me Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen vibes.

Such a vibe tho

wunderbarer gitarren-rock-pop mit melancholischem touch.

I enjoyed this having only really listened to a few of their singles but I now realise TWOD mostly don't do 3 minute singalongs. I love songs that start quieter and build and this is full of them, it's quite shoegazey when a song like "An Ocean Between The Waves" descends into a wall of sound. This definitely one for a quiet moment and turning the headphones up loud. Shades of Neil Young with the occasional harmonicas and noodly outros, and vocals remind of Bruce Springsteen. Big ticks for my taste The only reason I wouldn't give 5* is that it goes on a bit but I was in the kind of mood for that when I listened, so 5 it is!

Chill, but a bit boppy. Feel like I know their music even though I don't, so familiar.

Great vocals and the album that I have on Vinyl. Always good to listen

Elk nummer voelt alsof ik vanaf een strand richting de ondergaande zon vlieg en i love it

Really loved this. What a great vibe. Mellow and somber in all the right ways but melodic and beautiful. A 5/5 for sure

Zooheee, Super album Al heel veel geluisterd

Loved it!

Love this album!

I loved it. Spotify threw this at me one before, and I liked it, but forgot to save, so was happy that this reemerged.

This is an album I already knew very well. I had been introduced to The War On Drugs with “Slave Ambient” and remembered Adam Granduciel’s short time with the Violators, so I was looking forward to this one. When I listened to the first single “Red Eyes” I knew this album was going to be special, and it was (and is). To me it’s like Bruce Springsteen funneled through a Grateful Dead influenced jam band lens with indie rock mixed in there. But that may just be me. I dig it, and I’ll keep listening to this one and other TWOD albums as they’re released.

FANTASTIC album! Strong Springsteen influence, with a Bleachers-esque approach to taking on the sound. Knew of them for a while but will definitely be checking out more of them!

Classic. 4.5/5

One of my favorite albums of all time

I never heard it before/ Very nice album.

Gran Mood

A dreamscape of an album. A redemption towards the light in the face of darkness. A turning point that you'll never return from.

New to me, must research this. I dropped out of life for a long period. Loved it, will repeat listen.

I'm already familiar with The War on Drugs as a heartland indie rock band from their later singles "Holding On" and "I Don't Live Here Anymore". The group was formed by Adam Granduciel and Kurt Vile in the mid-2000s, only for the latter to leave shortly after their first release. This is their third album, and wow Adam and everyone else who worked on this knocked it out of the ballpark. Lost in a Dream is an album drenched in a blend of washed-out shoegaze and mid-80s-inspired roots rock that's intricate in its song construction. It's filled to the brim with gorgeous melodies, and several instrumental moments that resonate like the guitar solo of "An Ocean in Between the Waves", the reverb guitar sliding of "The Haunting Idle", the synth crescendo and interplay on "Burning", and the saxophone that shows up on "Under the Pressure" and "Red Eyes". Seriously, "Red Eyes" is one of those immediate smash singles from this record that I couldn't believe upon first listening. Adam sings with a Dylan-esque delivery that maintains a balance between capturing an emotion without overselling it and holding it together on the edge of heartbreak. His vocals pair neatly with the lyrical content, where after a year of nonstop touring, his anxiety and depression bled into the words. He tries to hold onto fleeting moments of love before they fizzle out, even if it drives him near a breaking point. It's earnest yet self-aware enough to have some emotional stakes. He knows there will be heartbreak after heartbreak, yet he keeps looking no matter how much it'll hurt. This is a strong record through and through, taking the rock of the past with the melancholic lens of the 2010s indie scene. Give it a chance.

i have lost count of how many times i have listened to this on repeat

The war on drugs are a great band - I’d heard this album several times before and it is brilliant. Nobody else I can think of thats contemporary has the similar sound of Bruce Springsteen and dire straits

I feel guilty for not being familiar with this. It's amazing. Chilled, timeless, aged quality. Poetic. Going into my scheduled listening.

Best album of the 2010s IMO. Beautiful slow burns, urgent rock rave-ups, atmospheric guitars, searching and introspective lyrics…burning and suffering. A modern rock classic that in the 10 years since it’s release has aged like a fine wine.

Without flaws

Love the soundscapes created. Very soothing and ethereal musical settings. Searching, yet uplifting lyrics… very captivating even on a first listen.
