Reviews (page 10 of 14)
Good album, I enjoyed this listen through. I forgot how much filler was on this album though. Easy to tell it’s a blueprint for a lot of prog, people like Danny Carey definitely make a lot more sense after hearing this album. 3.5/5
I enjoyed this one so much, didn't remembered I heard them before.
This album starts off so strong with those first 3 songs and then sort of coasts into redundancy.
Remarkably, this is the first time I’ve listened to a Rush album and quite enjoyed it - maybe the wind was blowing in the right direction, or perhaps I pressed play at the very moment the meds kicked in. I’ve tried to like Rush on many occasions and failed miserably - I often like the music, but that voice! I just can’t get to grips with it. Mercifully, it seemed quite toned down on this record - he sounds less like a Muppet on helium which helped me to enjoy things a little more. Growing up, I always had Rush down as a metal band, but musically, this sounds like a lot of contemporary prog bands. As a Porcupine Tree fan, I can really hear their influence. I’ve long since written Rush off as a band I might like, but this record might yet prove to be a way in…
Ok, better after each listening.
If you like Rush this is their crowning achievement. If you don’t like Rush you can probably get down with Tom Sawyer and YYZ and the rest will kind of bore you. That’s pretty much where I sit
Straight down the middle of the road, not bad, but nothing special
Rush always ends up being a marginally better listen than I expect.
Never could get into Rush.
Mwehh, not bad, it just feels forgettable.
I should really like Rush. I just don't and not sure why. Mad respect, but I just can't get into it.
Bit repetitive and not my kind of music but I can appreciate the quality. Also incredible guitar performance 👍
Polished prof. Mildly pretentious.
Cheesy af. Might have loved this as a teenager but not now. Don't hate it by any means though.
Rush, the one prog band I really can’t stand. That voice is horrible and there is just too much “difficult” musicianship purely to show off. Often there is no musical purpose other than “check this crazy riff” or “look at me, drumsoloing”. All respect for Neil Peart but come on
I've tried my whole life to like Rush. I know they are beloved by many but I just can't get into it. This album has the two radio hits that I know and they are solid. I have no doubt that these three guys are super talented, I just don't enjoy those talents much.
Interesting, but I think I have to listen to it more to dig it
Best Track - "Limelight"
Rush has never been my cup of tea but I recognize talent.
Am I a bad Canadian if Rush isn’t my favourite band? Eh… 3.5/5
I get why people dislike 'Prog Rock'. If you are after 'instant gratification' then it's not the musical genre you're looking for, it often lacks the 'hook' that will drag you in during a casual listen. Fair enough. I've had this album knocking around my collection for a number of years. It isn't my favourite Rush album. For many reasons, including some personal ones, that distinction goes to 'A Farewell to Kings' which isn't on this list. In general I prefer the band's earlier albums. This is listenable. I wouldn't kick it off the turntable but it isn't something that I choose to play often and that is telling. 3/5 for an 'OK' score. Were I allowed to I'd give it 3.5/5.
It looks like my streak of great albums has ended. I still think "Moving Pictures" is a nice record, though. It doesn't compare to Rush's titular song on their other album, "2141". Perhaps, 80s prog rock isn't my cup of tea. Let's see what album I get next time. 3 stars for "Moving Pictures".
Not a fan of their sound but appreciate their talent
Not bad! Other than limelight and Tom Sawyer it didn’t really engage me that much.
Impressive but uninvolving. Which seems to be my standard response to Rush.
Fine
Rush should really be exactly my kind of nerd shit, but I just can't get there
I tried to trade for this album back in 7th grade after I had borrowed it for a bit. The kid did not make the trade, and then I never bought the album. So I'm looking forward to this. The first 4 songs easily came back to me as ones I remember enjoying in my 1980s living room. Then a few that dragged until the end of the album. I'm stuck between a 3 and a 4. If I take out the nostalgia effect...
Early math rock, I can appreciate it
not bad
Eh, it was decent. I think I’m a hits guy when it comes to Rush.
This was a fun listen. That about sums it up. It still impresses me that they’re only a trio, but history has proven time and time again that Canadian bands are just better. I’m definitely still a “Greatest Hits” fan of this band, but it’s nice to finally say I listened to a Rush album in its entirety. But most of the songs sounded exactly the same.
6/10 YYZ The Camera Eye
4.8/10 = 2.9/5 Decent 80's rock album. The Camera Eye and YYZ are very good.
Strong instrumentals and an overall consistent experience. They play their instruments well, but that's just about it. I like YYZ and Camera Eyes though.
What all rock bands imagine they sound like after 6 beers. Fun, silly and a great voice. Like Van Halen in that you know what you’re gonna get but I enjoyed this way more.
Tom Sawyer is like the only good song on this album. Also, there’s lots of instrumental songs, but those aren’t interesting to me.
Buen descubrimiento.
Classic Rush
“Today’s Tom Sawyer’s not taught in school, it says the N-word and that’s not cool”
The hits are fantastic - Tom Sawyer boys like a bomb, Limelight rips - but the rest is just not my cuppa. Can’t get into their music on any long-term basis. But I kind of understand why their fans are legion.
Classic but all kinda felt the same
060925 18:03 3.5
It was a tough listen at first, the sounds were a little jarring but after listening again a couple times it really grew on me. Overall a decent album imo
Track 1: Tom Sawyer - Lyrics are a portrait of a modern day rebel, striding through the world with purpose. Tom Sawyer was a character in Mark Twain's 1876 novel 'The adventures of Tom Sawyer' about a mischievous young boy living in a town along the Mississippi river, the cahracter is based on a real person who was described as a hero for rescuing 90 passengers after a shipwreck. One of the themes of the novel is that Tom was much more moral than the rules of the society he lives in. Track 2: Red Barchetta - Lyrics tell a story set in a future where many types of vehicles have been banned by a 'motor law'. The narrators uncle has kept one of these now illegal cars and has been hiding it for about 50 years at his secret country home which was a farm before these laws were put in place. Every Sunday, the narrator sneaks out to go for a drive in the car. During one of these drives, he encounters the equivalent of the police 'gleaming alloy car', which culminates to a car chase until he drives down a one lane bridge, too narrow for the air cars and returns safely to his uncle's farm. Song inspired by short story 'A nice mourning drive' by Richard Foster in 1973. Track 3: YYZ - instrumental interlude, named for Toronto's Pearson International airport, represented by the code YYZ. Band has described it as a song 'about coming home'. Track 4: Limelight - Expresses discomfort with Rush's success and attention from the public. Paraphrases Shakespeare's 'all the world's a stage' from the play 'as you like it' in the opening lines. Track 5: The camera eye - Uses the 'camera eye' to talk about observation of the cities of New York (first verse) and London (second verse). Inspired by the 'USA Trilogy' novels of John Dos Passos. The sound effects are used to evoke essence of vibrant city. Track 6: Witch hunt - Recorded the same nigh John Lennon was shot. The first of four songs in whats been called the band's 'fear' series - 'The weapon' (from Signals, 1982), 'The enemy' (from Grace under pressure, 1984) and 'Freeze' (from Vapor trials, 2002). Lyrics describe a vigilante mob gathering under torchlight, feeding on xenophobia and bigotry. The song is a call against ignorance and prejudice. Track 7: Vital signs - Uses electronic and reggae influences to explore themes of individuality and the pressure to conform. Drew inspiration from the language of computers to parallel the function of humans. Favourite Track: Limelight Album Cover: Depicts movers who are carrying paintings (moving pictures), photographed outside the Ontario Legislative Building. The pictures that are being moved are the band's starman logo - which was featured on the back cover of their 1976 album '2112', a picture of dogs playing poker - titled 'a friend in need', and a painting that shows Joan of Arc being burned at the stake.
Shorter, more compact songs. Some hits but I like the older stuff more.
Thim Sawyaaaa
Not really my thing, but I can see the appeal
I had never heard of Rush, it was pleasant without being outstanding!
If Ed, Edd and Eddy made a rock band, this is what I imagine it would sound like.
8/26/25: Listened to this album on my way home and made a couple stops along the way. Definitely an old geezer 80s album! Tom Sawyer is a classic and I enjoyed the last song, Vital Signs, as well. Appreciated the instrumental/ guitar solos too.
Epic rock album.
Not my cup of tea but there are some very fun songs on here.
Fine enough
I enjoyed the more prog rock tracks. YXZ was pretty nuts in a good way. I liked some of the unconventional time signatures, and the drumming throughout was pretty epic. Not so much a fan of the singing or lyrics though, it would be better as an instrumental album.
grew up listening to rush a lot because of my dad and am slightly fatigued from them. I still really like Limelight.
limelight is far and away their best song, rest of the album is great too
Ok
Not my style
No doubt these were fantastic musicians. But I just didn't care.
This is so General Inzanity from Bob’s Burgers.
My old drum line teacher (like most everybody's old drum line teacher) loved Rush. There's plenty of stuff to like on here (Limelight is my favorite), but it's still pretty goofy. The lyrics and singing are both just pretty dorky.
bisschen zu viel rock

Good news! John Linnell (one half of TMBG) often describes himself as "sort of autistic" in interviews! Their fans are largely autistic as well! so i guess maybe his hate toward tmbg sprouts from people not being able to accept neurodivergent sounding music and think that only deep stuff has value. he even think that Stop Making Sense is not the essential talking heads album because its actually a film. is it because he can't understand the underlying autistic quality of the album? as for Moving Pictures itself... i only have two things to say. 1.although i don't think synths as being overrated. 2. it is not as prog as king crimson or as hard as led zep. and limelight is too poppy. 3/5
Not my style so much. Very good song structure though.
So Rush has a strange place in my heart due to an old coworker Kelly (toolowfrontrow) that I used to work with at Cresta. She had a strange condition that unfortunately took her life years ago. She was a great soul and a HUGE Rush fan that I barely listened to. I will enjoy listening to this though. Album Cover - I quite love it. It almost looks like a funeral but to different art. I'm assuming the art could be their different albums and they're being put away and family's mourn for it? Tom Sawyer - Really love the drums on this. Very powerful. The vocals do add quite a unique sound similar to how AC/DC has a unique vocal sound. Didn't really listen to lyrics much but loved the sound of the song. Might need to relisten cause that was their most plays on the album next to Limelight Red Barchetta - I get the sound they have for this album and I do love it. Very passionate. May be the time difference of the lyrics but I do enjoy it despite not really understanding it currently? I enjoy interesting lyrics but I think the time difference may be causing confusion at times? YYZ - I believe I have heard this song. POWERFUL start and memorable sound. Very powerful musicality here. While not on the most popular end, I'm PRETTY SURE I've heard this one a lot. Regardless, totally love this song. No lyrics, just pure sound. Limelight - Love the message. it feels like you're in the limelight with the song but definitely something talking about the limelights caveats. Alienation in the limelight. The Camera Eye - 11 minute song almost. We'll see how it goes lol Will listen on the side. Great pacing and changes of the song. Almost ethereal Witch Hunt - Love the intensity of the beginning, guitar riff at beginning was usual 80s rock but LOVE it. Slower but focus on lyrics and message. Very rebellious. Vital Signs - Love the craziness of this one. Final song in the album and a body check. Seems to be self empowerment with the ending just going "everybody got to elevate from the norm" to "deviate from the norm". Great message. Overall interesting album, not a favorite or anything but really enjoyed it. 3 stars.
Cool album, not as good as “Here, my dear”, but still timeless. Witch Hunt is my favorite
Has some interesting titles like Tom Sawyer and YYZ, nice start into the Album, only has 7 songs and goes 39 minutes, a little funky but great for some background music. YYZ has a crazy beginning and is just a little more wild ig. The camera man also got a crazy and quiet interesting beginning, followed by a funky bridge into an interesting instrumental part which is fading into the rest of the song, which is btw 10 minutes and 59 seconds long [•v•] (<- bird).
I like Tom Sawyer but this kind of rock isnt for me
I hate prog rock with a passion. If an album takes multiple listens for you to get the “tune” then it’s not for me. Not a single track is in what you would call ”normal” timing. That said, the drumming on this album is unreal. Good musicianship, shite songs.
I'd heard Tom Sawyer and Limelight and a few of the other songs on Moving Pictures before. I don't know someone couldn't if they have been alive during a time where classic rock radio was playing. Usually bands that have a focus on being technical and virtuosos are gonna get a thumbs down from me but Rush keeps it in the spirit of making the song what they want it to be. They are their own distinct thing and it's not always for me but I appreciate them.
Schon gutes Album! Aber nicht immer alltagstauglich
not that special
I never gave Rush a chance before. That was a mistake I’m glad to have corrected. It’s a hard album to rate – first because it’s uneven, and second because it sounds like three or four different genres at once. The vocal parts are annoying. Not only because of the singer’s poor voice, but more generally because I think they’re dated and irrelevant. They add a layer of cheesiness this album really didn’t need. The instrumental parts are, however, awesome. YYZ is an incredible piece of prog rock, and the orchestration on The Camera Eye is absolutely epic ; some moments almost made me think of Magma. I’m amazed that it’s such an old album. Parts of it sound super modern, I can totally see how they contributed to shape prog rock. I’ll definitely look up their other works. Would have rated it a 4* for the instrumentals alone, but the vocals made me drop a star. It was a hard choice though, I may edit my rating later after I give it another listen.
though it's prog sensibilities make me want to like it more, this is really a product of it's times and that's okay, but im not crazy about it
Good, with solid bangers, but the end just kinda fades away...
I thought this would be long and self-indulgent but instead it was oddly familiar. I think it's the influence. I'd describe its sound as being like early 1990s incidental TV music. Not on a bad way (because, we assume, Rush probably originated the sound) but in the way that music evolves. I also like the song titles based on mathematical symbols - maybe an inspiration for Ed Sheeran!
Some good songs but a bit cheesy
This album starts off with the one Rush song I have heard before so that was a great start to show what I should expect. While the album has its good song (amongst 7 songs it swings a lot) and some that I would probably skip in the future it was still a great time listening through it. Good rock music with a singer who has a unique voice.
Prob rock, I’m not the biggest fan of it. Feels jokey! YYZ was ok. Tom Sawyer was laughable. The rest was fine but didn’t scratch the itch. Fell short for me 3/5
Shoutout dad
3.2/it's fine but they're not pink floyd
This album gets a 3 solely because of YYZ, if an album can have that kind of song then it's got something at least. The rest of the album is a 2, don't like the singer and not in love with the synths.
7/.510
okay but a bit rowdy for me
This was fine. The instrumentals were good and you can tell they are talented but it doesn't do much for me.
2,5
Objectivly good but that 80s synth situation just isn't my thing tbh
Okay, it's cool. better than the earlier one. I feel like this would be in a deodorant commercial in the 1980s
5/10 NERDS!!!!!!!!! 7-13-2025
Pretty good but wouldn't reach for it again
Perfectly pleasant to listen to, but it felt somewhat removed from me??? Maybe too polished, idk.
Never really heard much Rush - one of those bands that was bigger in the US than the UK. I suppose I can see why people like them, but it didn't really do much for me. It felt a little like it fell between two posts - too proggy to really rock out, but not strange enough to really keep my interest. Nothing too offensive, but nothing to grab me. Tom Sawyer was clearly the best track, and i get why musicians love the oddness of YYZ, but beyond that? Nothing much for me.
Nostalgia feel, especially for Tom Sawyer and Limelight. Cohesive sound held the album together.
Having never listened to Rush, and not being a fan of Prog, I wasn’t looking forward to this. But Geddy Lee’s voice wasn’t as marmite as some make out, musicianship (especially drums) solid, as you would expect, if soulless. Not as overwhelmingly synth heavy as I thought it would be, some genuinely heavy parts, more like a math-y Led Zeppelin than Yes.
...
7/10 - Love the guitar solos. Had that classic 80’s vibe.
A pretty good prog album mostly lifted by Tom Sawyer and YYZ. 3/5
As a teenager, Rush had such a mystique about them. A nuch talked about Canadian, who deftly straddle the line between Rock and Prog Rock. Alas, when I took the plunge and bought a couple of LPs (Yes, I;m that old) I found them disappointing. This was one of those LPs andit's been unplayed in the 40 years since. Listening again today... same basic conclusion. Over-rated.
Never been a big Rush fan but this album does have some gems.
Not something I’d typically listen to. My dad LOVES Rush, and I’d never really given them a chance. I did enjoy this album, but not quite for me.
I like it
Memorable songs but didn't really feel me in
The demonic fleetwood mac
I want to like it more
Never was a Rush fan but they deserve their due. Their sound is unmistakably original and that counts for a Star or 3.
Intricate and interesting but didn’t hold myvattrntion
I like a couple of these songs a lot, and I like Rush, and this is kind of their best album, but I just can't quite push it up to a 4. It's just a bit of a drag on Side B and I don't think there was enough impact and significance of this album to give it extra credit. RIP guys. VERY high 3.
I have to dock them one star because of their social/political leanings… the lyrics are just so dumb.
"musically they're amazing but the vocals are so bad I can't get into it." Going to be a copy and paste for way too many early prog rock albums, at least this one has Tom Sawyer and YYZ.
Limelight still rocks.
Musically very good. Rocking with spacey synths but I’ve never been able to get along with the vocals
One of my faves
Had some throwback with this one, I liked the guitar solos they were pretty good. Decent overall
decent
Prog rock with great intrumentals. Favorite track: limelight other picks: tom sawyer, yyz, witch hunt
A Canadian Yes? Interesting mix of pop and prog, though not my bag.
I liked this much better than i expected
I like this album. I don't know how it compares to the rest of their discography.
Never listened to rush, good excuse as any. Heart more about Neil peart than the band. Drumming is technically excellent. Is he just the Steve vai of drumming though? Might need a few more listens to appreciate. Very musical, I just don’t get it
Really enjoyed this. Wasn't expecting too
Rush doing the Rushiest of Rush on this one. Good fun. Elite musicality. Not my world but I respect it!
It's Rush. It's fun but it's proggy as all hell. Tom Sawyer will always slap though
what stands out most to me in this record is the drumming - complex, catchy rhythms underpin almost every song. but otherwise it doesn't do much for me; tracks overstay their welcome in pursuit of a buildup where the payoff isn't always worth it.
like it. catchy. proggy. wouldn't have listened to it usually.
Solid album, very cinematic feel which seems on brand with the messaging. It does kinda feel like background music and doesn’t command your attention as much
Listening to Rush for this time, I couldn't stop thinking about some modern prog-rock/metal acts as Opeht or Dream Theater. And that's not good because it is a sound that I grew tired of, mainly because I overplayed it when I was younger. Still, this is a very decent album. It shows how technical they are playing their instruments without reaching the point of feeling pretentious. I did also like the overall atmosphere and the production is great. Emotionally speaking, I didn't do much.
Tomorrow Sawyer was the standout. Most of it was good though
Ryan knew it was Rush from like 1 second of audio. Not exciting.
I remember being cornered on a date being forced to listen to this album. I still don't understand Rush's appeal, but I'm giving it a 3 because at least they can do what they do.
“Tom Sawyer”, “YYZ” and “Limelight” are classics. “Red Barretta” is okay. Every thing else did not capture my interest. When it comes to Prog, I’m more of a Canterbury guy.
Similarly to the last Rush album, I can’t tell if I hate this or quite like it. I can’t be getting in with Geddy Lee’s voice though.
More guitar mastery from the Canadian prog gods… is it his voice, something is slightly off but you can’t doubt it’s technical proficiency!
Meh
High energy prog rock. Awesome musicianship. Didn't listen to any of the lyrics because it'll be the usual prog rock nonsense. Drifts into jazz-rock for YYZ. Entertaining. 3/5.
Muy sólido, definitivamente lo escucharia otra vez. Muy lindo trabajo de guitarras y batería. No tan original pero zafa bastante. Nota: 3.4
Interesting album, guitar oriented rock, difficult to pigeonhole into one genre.
A great sound at its best, an imitation of itself at its worst. Tom Sawyer is a classic and Witch Hunt was a fun new one for me.
I tend to really like progressive rock albums a lot, however this one seems to be an exception. A lot of this album is 'just alright' and not as experimental or progressive as a lot of the classic albums of this genre are. especially the longer songs really suffer here and are a slog to get through. Still not bad at all, just not as great as it could've been
Nice bit of prog. Think they have better albums though.
Bit dull, first song was alright ig
2.5
yeah it wasn't for me. I discussed this at length with kumo, but essentially I can appreciate on a technical level while acknowledging that I will probably never go out of my way to listen to this. My favorite tracks were probably Red Barchetta, Limelight, and The Camera Eye. These dudes can definitely shred and make good music, but at a certain point all the tracks just started to blend together for me. Idk, maybe prog rock just aint my thing. 3.5/5
My first intro to Rush. I can see why they are so popular.
Serious question, does everyone secretly love Rush? They’re rocking 3.1 million listeners on Spotify, about the same as the tremendously hyped Fontaines D.C is today … and yet no one has ever mentioned them to me. This despite the fact that so much of this record is so obviously influential to any number of bands I’ve enjoyed, from the relatively popular Coheed and Cambria to the almost completely obscure Capsule (go listen to “Cobalt Connection” and tell me the riff 30-seconds in isn’t a second cousin of “Tom Sawyer”’s most brooding bit of guitar). Anyway, no great issue. I’ve found Rush perhaps exactly when I was supposed to. This is a highly enjoyable record that gets better every spin. The playing is phenomenal* while always rewarding the song; the vocals are pretty daft but plenty charming (so much personality!). Rush appeals to the geek in me, I guess. Let’s keep it our little secret. *On that: I feel like the fact Rush are known as such prodigious players was part of why I avoided them for so long. It could be said that much of my listening life so far has been characterised by a youngster’s mistrust of anything all that technically adroit (following a simple logic that playing from the heart means, necessarily, bypassing one’s finer motor skills). To now have released that hang-up and realised there’s a whole universe of excellent music out there for me to discover is a source of no small volume of bittersweet contentment.
A classic, but mixed. Some bangers, and some duds. 3.5 stars.
its rush
Technically, this is seamless. Everything is crisp if not a little over-produced. The world knows “Limelight” but the structure of the songs are interesting. Everyone has their own spotlight in each song but Peart kind of steals the show on drums. Not my usual cup of tea but was surprised how musically creative they are. Took me a little while to get used to Lee’s voice which at times gets buried in the mix. Not great but not awful. Somewhere in the middle. A callback to the 80’s.
meh, te zacht, zagerige stem
Very typical Rush, you either like it or you don't. I kind of like Rush, they are fun.
Fine. A musical shrug. Not anything I found particularly interesting nor bad. I have no strong opinions either way
This is far better than 2112. The palette of the 80’s, with its synths and heavier bass lines suits Rush’s sound much better. That being said, I still don’t love the vocals. YYZ, however, is an absolute masterpiece, and works extremely well in a Marching Band performance, as evidenced by the FHS marching band show circa 2007. It’s highly nostalgic to me.
Not really a prog fan and going through this list has mostly confirmed that. This album is ok, they toned down the wankery a bit I suppose.
5/10. I wrote some notes on a song-by-song breakdown and then it got deleted. So this is what I have for today: - YYZ is effectively serving as an instrumental interlude at the mid point-ish of the album, transitioning into the more mellow song with Limelight - This whole album can be defined by its use of the synthesizer, with some strong drum/guitar interactions. - The Camera Eye being 10:58 min long, ok I see where Taylor Swift All Too Well (10 min verison) got the inspo. This song seems to be separated into acts/movements and it reminds me a lot of musical theater storytelling - I assume Witch Hunt is being referenced in the portrait in the foreground of the album, which makes me wonder if there are other references in the cover art. If so, I like the cohesion between the album and the album art. - The vocal style is not my personal favorite, but I can see where it probably influenced modern artists like Greta Van Fleet. - There's a lot of moments that felt like it could be backing music to a Regular Show montage, which is probably due to the strong synth use. I also liked moments like in The Camera Eye where the music felt cinematic and I could envision a scene playing out with the music in the back.
Their 8th album. Rock / Prog Rock and some synth. Tom Sawyer, Brilliant track and great intro to the song and album. Vocals and bass good on this one. YYZ is a good rock instrumental with nice bass licks. Limelight, a track about fame and quotes Shakespeare. Good song. The Camera Eye, an eleven minute track of rock, prog and synth. I kept waiting for this one to take off but it never got there. I enjoyed the first four tracks of this album, after that it went a little off for me. Nice vocals and lyrics throughout though. Solid album.
I remember touring with Houmous & Chutney back in ‘89 in Liverpool. We were playing at Anfield. In the back rooms we heard some rustling. It was most of the Liverpool squad rearranging the gallery. I remember thinking ‘Why’s Rush moving pictures?’ 2.5
Enjoyed this more than I was expecting to. I had Rush down as whiny vocals and pretentious noodling, which is true to an extent, but there are some strong tracks on here - 'Tom Sawyer', 'Vital Signs', and precious little noodling (a bit on 'The Camera Eye' maybe.) I may have to revisit their other albums and try again.
One of those bands that's somehow been in my life since birth, the songs always sound familiar whenever I hear them even if I've never heard them before, that doesn't mean they're any good... okay this one is fine, if you are going to include a Rush album why not this one?
Mega classic, feels truncated but songs are still 5-8 minutes. Guitar Hero sighting.
I enjoyed listening to this album because it wakes me up in the morning and puts me in a better mood. The guitarist is so talented.
I kind of like this album because I like the beats that their music has but I don't like the lyrics that there are. I would not recommend this album to someone else because I don't think that many other people like this type of music. I would give this album a solid 3 stars out of 5 stars.
I think the cover is very interesting. "Tom Sawyer" was weird. The singing sounded strained but the music was okay. I liked "YYZ" more because the guitar was really cool paired with the drums. "Limelight" started really well. The singing was better this time but I still didn't like the voice. But the lyrics were pretty. Overall this album isn't the best but it isn't the worst.
It's good...for Rush... 3/5
I liked the album. While it doesn't strike me as revolutionary or life-changing, I enjoyed what what felt like playing with form and rhythm coupled with instrumental virtuosity. Limelight was probably my favorite song on the album just due to the lyrics. I can see why there are some very hot or cold takes on this band as a whole, and if you can't get over the lead singer's voice you'll probably have a hard time with this, but I listened to it outside on a breezy 60 degree day while doing yardwork, and the last track played before I even knew it and I didn't feel like I wasted the time or would have rather listened to another album. Not sure I'd recommend it as a favorite, but not bad at all.
Takes me back to the rollerskating days. I really don’t like his voice anymore.
Are these dudes aliens for real? They certainly sound like highly talented aliens who have studied what rock should sound like, but they reveal themselves with their competence, textures and lack of soul. You can’t deny the musicality, or the fact that they rip. My biggest beef, as with most prog rock, is I feel a little unmoored without a cohesive touch point.
Better than 2116, and pretty good instrumentation. Still, the lead singer's vocals and lyrics are rarely that interesting.
A friend of mine put it brilliantly when she said "I really like Rush - up until Geddy Lee starts to sing." 3 stars cos even thought it's solid music, his voice really annoys me.
Not for me.
I've tried listening to Rush before, but the singers voice is like nails on a chalkboard and always put me off. Luckily while sitting through this, the 3rd song is an instrumental, which shows the bands chops without the distraction. This is a good album if you can past the singers voice. I can't get past it though.
Bunch of theater nerds to my ears
It’s fine
This was okay, but probably not something I will return to anytime soon. The weird synth sounds didn't do much for me, and the singer's voice also wasn't really my taste. My favourite song of this album was therefore the instrumental YYZ, although I enjoyed The Camera Eye as well. I was planning on listening to Rush for some time now, as several people had recommended them to me. I don't know if it is something I will enjoy, but I might listen to them some more. So this was a nice introduction, I guess.
Eh not for me
meh thought it was interesting but his voice is suck
6/10 Don’t think I’ve ever heard Rush before, this was alright. Like a lot of North American hard/prog rock it tended towards slightly pompous and silly, just about on the right side of the line. Very well played, synth and drums in particular, but the vocals didn’t really do it for me at all. Best: YYZ
meh pero un 3 que no se quejen
Very nice album. I enjoyed it. Leaning towards 4. I didn't why I was waiting for a very pop catchy green day style song…
Didn’t really know much rush besides Tom Sawyer so this was cool to listen to.
It's better than the other Rush album I've listened to, but given it's Rush, it's a bit disappointing. Favorite Track: "Tom.Sawyer".
The melodies were promising, but the vocals did not convince me that it was a great album.
Two back-to-back prog albums aren’t easy to digest! I’m kind of discovering Rush—I only really knew Tom Sawyer before. And funnily enough, it’s the song I like the least on the album with the last one. The whole thing flirts with FM rock at times, but never enough to be off-putting and some riffs are actually very good. I really like it… but man, that voice is horrible! So much so that my favorite track is the instrumental YYZ. It’s such a shame… How did they end up with that voice? The guy’s an amazing bassist, but why, oh why, did he have to sing??
Day 1: Rush - Moving Pictures I like proggy music (prog-metal especially) but am seriously lacking in prog rock education. This is my first Rush album and my first album of the 1001 project (hi everyone). I think I said “fuck yeah” out loud 2-3 times, mostly from the guitar playing, which I really enjoyed. I also loved the drum sound throughout and the production generally sat well with me. However, the tracks did not always keep my attention and I only liked about half of what the vocalist was doing. I can see why people rave about Rush and I think if I spun this a few more times I might enjoy it more. I certainly enjoyed moments, but I don’t think I “get” it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (Ratings reflect how much I enjoyed any album, not how “good” I think it might be, though that’s another conversation altogether)
Moving Barchetta and witch hunt are solid
Was complaining about YYZ and then I heard the opening riff from Limelight and I was like oh cool. Also good album cover pun.
I listened to this all weekend and tried harded to get into this than maybe any album we've had to date. On paper I should love it, but I just don't. It is a cool and enjoyable experience listening to this on headphones, so glad I did that (several times), but I don't think I'll be coming back for more. Super high quality sound and production, technically impressive, but there were very few moments where I was really hooked. I was also listening to a bit of The Royal Scam this weekend and it occurred to me both Rush and Steely Dan are elevating above the genre in a finer class. Prog rock and yact rock doesn't really desribe it properly. There is a lot to like about the technically sound and ambitious arrangements, but IMO its gotta have a groove, something to latch on to. Not sure about this take but I was struck by how quickly I was consumed by "Haitan Divorce" maybe the 7th or 8th best song on the Dan album and how I just never got a fraction of that level of engagement from the Rush songs. Will hang up and listen.
Need to give this an extra listen
Really good album by Rush with classics on it.
- Surprised by how much I liked a couple of tracks on the first half of the album. "Red Barchetta" is unquestionably fun and "Limelight" is poignant without feeling pretentious. "Tom Sawyer" is fine; too much keyboard for my taste. - Very much lose interest in the latter half. Not a huge prog rock fan to begin with and the more electronic elements began to grid on my nerves.
Some big tunes on this guy. All the songs I think of when I think of Rush. I'm not their biggest fan but I was happy to see this in rotation. YYZ has a killer drum solo.
Not my fav group but undeniably talented
my friend’s dad has been telling me to listen to Rush
kinda like it??
I only knew YYZ - it as classic amongst bassists (not that I can play it). So I was expecting a lot from this album. It is as well made as I expected. Clever prog rock, played with virtuosity. It also leaves me stone cold.
Ah the age old struggle to like RUSH, intensely irritated by the Tom Sawyer opener (have always disliked that track, a hard skip if it pops up in a playlist), I just can't vibe with RUSH very well, not my kind of jam, I like progressive rock but not the borderline cheesy stuff like this, Witch Hunt is probably the best track, ⭐⭐⭐
En ollut aiemmin kuunnellut tätä levyä, vaikka olen kuunnellut paljon Beatlesia. Hyvä, ei oma suosikki.
not that good like a 2.7 but i’ll round to 3
Nice enough 3/5
Fun, but ultimately wouldn't replay this, and in comparison to other albums in this genre, just not quite making the 4. Would give 3.5 though
Oh
Liked it fine through "Limelight", but after that I was done with it. I don't mind Rush in small doses, but this proved yet again that I'm not into them enough to become a fan. Totally respect their influence on other artists though.
Songs are nice, not really sure what to say about this album because I didn't analyse it thoroughly. Some of the riffs are really cool. I don't really dig the singing, it feels kinda bland. However, I did love some of the guitar solos. I added 1/7 songs to my playlist, and liked the other ones. I think it deserves a 3/5
Never really my thing but I appreciate the 3 man band skills
The band Rush was previously unknown to me. Surprising, as I was into the prog rock genre. The band's sound is quite pleasing. It reminds me a lot of the Canadian band Saga. My brother was a fan of them in his youth and so I had to listen to this music all the time. At some point I just had enough. Maybe that's the reason why I'm not particularly enthusiastic about this album. 3/5
Tom Sawyer is a great song but the rest is alright
I sound like a broken record but YYZ and Tom Sawyer are perfect 5s and the rest just sound like worse YYZ and atom Sawyer.
Rush is like the musical equivalent of mayonnaise. I don't really like mayonnaise. Best Song: Tom Sawyer Rating: 5.5/10 3 Stars
I like progressive rock in general and the instrumental bits made it a worthwhile listen, not the biggest fan of his voice though.
Unfortunately it's not really my thing. I feel bad as I know it's been highly rated and all, but I struggle with this type of music. Would probably give it 2.5/5 if that was an option but 2 stars seems a bit too harsh. 1: 3/5 2: 3/5 3: 3.5/5 4: 3/5 5: 2/5 6: 2/5 7: 3.5/5 Average 2.86/5
"Catch the spirit, catch the spit" Wasn't much of a fan in 1981 and I still feel the same way. I'm feeling some bad sci-fi theme. They should read Sturgeon's Law. YYZ is good. While I know a song like Limelight, I was never curious about the band that recorded it.
THE Rush album.
I can just tell this guy got punched all the time in high school
Not really my cup of tea but I get the appeal.
Placebo alike
I was into it but nothing to write home about
Wow I am very impressed. So many good songs here. Very technical instrumentation as well. Witch hunt was very cool. YYZ uses a 7 time signature which is unusual but cool.
Rush's music is fine. Their fans are the problem.
Tom Sawyer is an undisputed banger. But that’s about it unfortunately.
I was really hoping that Rush was going to ‘Wow!’ me. In the search for ‘new’ music, my prog rock blind spot held hope for an undiscovered vein of old gold. But…I agree that, while technically pretty great, their music doesn’t get all the way from my ears to my soul.
Tough one for me- on the one hand I really want to like rush and when it’s on I do. However, it takes a lot for me to decide to listen to a rush album- there is still something about geddy’s voice that I just don’t jive with.
oooh synth at the beginning the name sounds familiar but admittedly i don’t remember from where. i think they’re pretty popular the vocals are so high pitched lol i like the drums at the end of the first song i have a headache so i might not give this a good rating…
Don’t mind this at all- I would give this a 7/10, but don’t think it deserves 4 stars
Was fine
Nerds of the world, unite!
the energy and guitars on this are incredible, but I cannot get into the rush guy's voice
Stark trea.
I've been meaning to give Rush a shot for a minute. I think it's neat, but the last third of this album ain't as good.
Are they actually Moving Pictures of dogs playing poker and a mime being burned in the Limelight? (I think yes.) The music on the album is really quite good, what I didn’t enjoy so much was Tom Sawyer singing out of his range on many of the songs. Great finish with Vital Signs which is the best song on the album. (3.1*s)
Rush always seemed to get picked on, like you were a nerd if you liked them or just somehow uncool. I think people struggle with the vocals and the angular time signatures but this album is actually pretty good. I liked it a lot more than expected. I will point out that it feels a bit emotionless at times and the lyrics lack depth. I think the strong suit is the backing instruments. 3.15 for the self-indulgent Canadians.
Rush are a band my muso pals, particularly drummers, swear by. The Canadian trio’s technical mastery is undeniable, and I’ve always admired their craft. Yet, despite multiple efforts, I find it hard to connect with their music on a deeper level. On Moving Pictures, the precision of the compositions leaves me somewhat cold. The tracks are undeniably impressive from a technical standpoint, but they often feel so meticulously plotted that they lack a certain spark of spontaneity. “YYZ,” for instance, is dazzling in its complexity, with its time signature based on Morse code, but it feels more like a technical showcase than an emotionally engaging piece. Even on a narrative-driven track like “Red Barchetta,” which paints vivid imagery, the music doesn’t quite pull me into its world. Admittedly, I tend to connect more with music that feels rawer or less polished—something with grit or imperfections, less “clever for clever’s sake.” I don’t mind complexity or ambition, but here it feels detached as if the heart of the music got lost in the technical intricacies. Then there’s Geddy Lee’s vocals. On tracks like “Limelight,” his high-pitched delivery occasionally adds to the alien, otherworldly feel of the music, but often it feels like a barrier. I can respect what he’s doing—it’s unique, undeniably a skill—but it runs me up the wrong way more often than not. To be fair, the calculated nature of Moving Pictures might be entirely intentional, reflecting the band’s themes of alienation and modernity. Many fans would argue this coldness is the point—“Tom Sawyer,” after all, is about individuality and resisting conformity, and the slick production mirrors the era’s push for technical precision. There’s no denying the musicianship is jaw-dropping, or that Rush consciously aimed to create more accessible material here. For plenty of listeners, those efforts paid off spectacularly. Still, I can’t shake the feeling that this album is more to be admired than loved. Moving Pictures is filled with strong individual tracks, but they never quite coalesce into something I can fully embrace. It’s like being shown a perfectly engineered machine: I can marvel at the craftsmanship, but it doesn’t move me. For all its intricacies, the album leaves me longing for something messier, more human, and less calculated. Maybe the issue is with me—but I just like my music a little less... wanky. Did/Do I own this release? No Does this release belong on the list? Its blend of complex instrumentation with accessible songwriting set a new standard for progressive music in the 1980s, so I understand it being included. Would this release make my personal list? No. Will I be listening to it again? Rarely.
sencillamente no me importa 7/10
An excellent example of a Rush album. Signals is also a great record that came right after this. Probably peak Rush in my opinion.
This one gets a great endorsement from the 7-year old. I never thought I would be listening to this much Rush, but ya gotta give the people what they want.
Good but needs more, overall not too impressed
I’ve heard this album 1001 times, so it is hard to review with an unbiased opinion. I love the drums. I am not a fan of Geddie Lee’s vocals, but am a HUGE fan of him as a person. That’s all I can say about that.
Forgot I had heard this befofe
not my thing but was actually enjoyable
Nice background listening, not the most engaging ever though.
couple good tracks.
My first thought, “oh fuck, now I have to get through 120 minutes of the prog rock kings”. Then I realized it’s practically an EP…but it’s 40 minutes long. So all in all, it’s jammy. It’s spacey, it’s what you know Rush sounds like if you’ve ever heard a few notes from them. Did this make me a fan? No it didn’t. Choice cut: Tom Sawyer
Proper rock and really enjoyable.
It was ok, but loud and not an easy listen
I like this one! Can't fully explain why but it sounds well crafted and interesting. Not on the level of Led Zeppellin but its aight 7/10
Moving pictures but there were no pictures nor moving, lies
Simply not a huge fan of progressive rock. Obviously there’s a a few replayable hits, but although I appreciate the genre, it isn’t for me. Limelight is one I can continue to come back to.
Rock opera vibes
music is technically good but it was so uninteresting and boring i have nothing else to say
It's a bit too much, but I enjoyed it
i zoned out and YYZ brought me back in so for that it’s a 3. witch hunt wasn’t bad either
3.5 rounded down how much of what makes this so good to people is just nostalgia…. be honest highlights: red barchetta, limelight (oct 27 2024)
Nice, ikke så spennanes🤷🏼♀️
Album started out strong they got worse with each song. Tom Sawyer is a clear standout.
Lots of good ideas and songwriting, but to be honest the high-pitched voice of the lead singer kind of gets at me. 6/10
Not a big rush fan, but if there’s one to go with it’s Moving Pictures. Melodic prog done with precision and great musicianship.
Insane opening song, maybe greatest ever
Quite fun, lots of breadth
I enjoy Rush but I feel this was a mid album
Its good I hate that I like it
Aikamoista! Ihan pop-progea, näistä kappaleistahan saa kiinni hyvin.
I have a strange relationship with Rush where I hate some of their stuff and I like some other parts, usually if I like a band I like 95% of their work. Moving Pictures falls mostly into the 'like' category, they ditch a lot of their prog stylings and embrace the 80s rock sound a lot more, and when it works it really works because Geddy Lee is properly talented, his bass work is outstanding but he also has a voice that just immediately hits the mark within Rush's sound and the rock genre overall. Tom Sawyer is an all-timer of a song, the back half of The Camera Eye is really good too; if the highs of this album are a 4 and the lows (YYZ, Witch Hunt) are a 2, then it gets a solid 3.
Definitely preferred this to the other Rush album(s?) that we've had. It's classed as prog but it isn't really, it's much more similar to traditional rock of that time. Some songs go for a bit of a wander where they shouldn't, and drag it all out a bit longer than they probably should, but it's not bad. Synth sounds date it pretty hard though. A solid 3, probably would've been higher if I'd encountered it when I was younger.
More like 3.5 Really liked Tom Sawyer and YYZ Very unique sound
Enjoyable but outside of XYZ and Tom Sawyer it's not very memorable. 7/10
Like bass (possibly fretless) Bit long (can drag on) Fun Songs differ in quality Endings are a bit iffy Fav: red barchetta
Good.
Tom Sawya! Classic 80's rock. In that most of it is super weird and synth-y. A couple jams, but mostly not
Decent in places
I kinda like this.
It was fine, nobody needs to hear an album of Rush though, the hits will do.
Went from not being sure what Rush sounded like to instantly recognizing the first track (and most of the others). Apparently prog!! YYZ is a dope instrumental track. I like the 80s synth combined with the guitar riffs. Dragged a little though.
I didn't realise this is what Rush sounded like. I always thought they were some kind of thrash metal type affair. I know I've already listened to one of their albums so far, but I'd clean forgotten what that sounded like, such was the impression it left on me. This to me has all the annoying trappings of prog, but maybe with more conventional song structures? There's some nice bits in here. I like the synths, and some of the musicianship is good... but as with other prog albums, a lot of this feels way too earnest. It seems to take itself very seriously, yet it's kind of silly and lacks substance. 2.5 rounded up.
It was good but I didn't really hear it.
People seem to have written a LOT of words about this one. I'll just say that I was surprised that it's not very heavy. I'd assumed all those denim-jacketed fans were listening to something a lot more aggressive, back in the 80s. It's very upbeat. Excellent drumming, melodic bass. They sound very comfortable in what they're doing, and a sense of creative fun comes across. Not really for me; I'd had enough after side 1, but I can see why they inspired such devotion.
Less grim than I anticipated, having made some very unfavourable judgements about the band in my teens, based purely on their fans’ aesthetic. Would I deem it a classic? No, though I understand why some might. Would I seek it out again? No. Is my life enriched by hearing it? No. Did it make me filled with rage that I’d wasted 40 minutes of my precious remaining life having to hear it? No. So a 3.
I did groan when I saw another album by Rush pop up, as I really wasn’t keen on the last one. But this was so much better musically. I’m not keen on his vocal but it was overall worth a solid 3, and probably another listen some time
3.4 - Great for one song, but feel like it just becomes them doing the same thing slightly differently. Technically great, but just got a bit bored
3 stars for the drum fills alone. Prog rock is strange.
Solidne 3/5
Meh, I like a song or two but not an entire album I guess
Good! Not my style but good, I really liked "Witch Hunt" and I am going to try some of their other albums now.
Overall a good album. Some of the songs drag on, but liked a few of them. 3.5/5 Might listen again
Tom Sawyer is a great song, the rest of this is alright. Nothing against Rush, but also just not that into them.
I'm Canadian, so have heard at least the singles thousands of times but I think this is the first time I've listened to a rush album all the way through. I didn't like the sound as much as earlier prog, but this was still decently good
