Reviews (page 12 of 14)

I wasn't too familiar with Rush, I guess I was in need of some prog rock today, as was digging on the guitar work. Enjoyed it, but doubt it's something I'd frequent.

My first Rush album, and it was more or less what I expected. Sometimes enjoyable, sometimes meandering, always technically excellent. My favourites were Limelight and Vital Signs, which might be the least proggy tracks. Coincidence? Probably not.

Bit generic nothing stand out here

Tom sawyer knocks it up to a 3.

Good fun. Tom sawyer and limelight are both tunes, close to a 4 star for me.

Enjoyable nonsense

my first concert, pretty cool novel like stuff but does get a bit boring after a while

While I can appreciate that Rush is very musically talented, I cannot get over my dislike of them. That voice is like a cheese grater.

A couple really great songs. The rest of the album is meh.

SLAPPA' DA BASS MAN. Funnily enough I watched I Love You Man just the other day. Not a terrible album but it's pretty repetitive.

Loved it in my younger days.

some great songs, some just too long prog rock

This was my dope smoking long haired roommate's favorite band. It aged well.

Not my cup of tea but I respect it. They have a unique sound.

No es mi estilo pero estuvo bien

I can see what fans are into, it’s just not for me. Drums sound separate from the rest of the music, somehow.

3, raw

"It's a Saturday night, I have no date, but a two litre bottle of Shasta, and my all Rush Mix-Tape. Let's Rock" *Space Invaders shooting sound plays* - Fry, Futurama This is my one and only intro to Rush, and was mildly disappointed that the record didn't really come with a Space Invaders overlay. But in all seriousness many songs in Moving Pictures would work well in any playlist (or mix-tape - let's keep that theme going), for a huge gaming sesh or even a workout sesh. For a band's eighth studio album that ain't bad at all in my books. Best: YYZ Worst: Witch Hunt

Well, Tom Sawyer was unexpectedly short and tight. When it went into 7/8 time I was thinking, here goes 12 minutes of my life! Limelight was also very good. Everything else was a bit dull for me. Incredible musicianship, not much in the way of tunes. But it'll do.

Pelkäsin etten siedä yhtään, mutta olihan tää hyvä.

Rush. Bubbles favourite...

I didn't think I liked rush but this was enjoyable. Some decent songs well played

Its basically rush. A little bit epic. A little bit naff

Rush was part of my adolescence. 2112, A Farewell to Kings, and Hemispheres, were never far from my turntable. Unfortunately once Moving Puctures arrived, Rush was part of my past. I had moved on to punk, new wave and alternative though those three mentioned still have a place in my heart if not on my turntable. So how dod I like Moving Pictures? Not very much. The songs I knew; Tom sawyer and Limelight suffered from over exposure and among the other songs nothing really grabbed me....perhaps with a few more listens....but I somehow doubt it. 3 🌟

Never knew that the sound of '80s rock could be turned into a progrock journey. Rush particularly did this well in their famous "Tom Sawyer". The idea of using synths to amplify a spacey atmosphere is not that new (probably, this was 1981 after all), but I never heard anyone did it as well as Rush. "YYZ" is also a notable mention. This instrumental track reminds the listeners that they're still a progrock band, with top-tier instrumental prowess. It's rhythm is apparently inspired by the morse code of "YYZ". dah-dit-dah-dah dah-dit-dah-dah dah-dah-dit-dit. Can you hear it? The rest of the album is okay. It got some occasional WOW moments. But overall, the album sounds like a complex version of '80s mainstream rock. It's just okay. I dunno, maybe it's Lee's voice.

I'm never really sure what to make of Rush. I don't love it but it's definitely interesting.

Solid Hard Rock Album. (6/10) FT: YYZ, Limelight

not something that i would listen to, but not bad ig

Never quite managed to get into this, I wanted it to either get rockier or proggier, but it just seemed to sit somewhere down the middle.

This was cooler than I was expecting. Good, actually. Not sure what I expected

This album's cover is fun. Apart from that, I found myself to dislike 1980s music from the US. Meh.

This is very 80s. Wow they can have a track that's 10 mins long. No wonder Coheed and Cambria were inspired by this.

Pretty good

I’ve heard a few Rush songs in the past, it’s the genre of music that could pass me by. Of their time, not bad by any means but it hasn’t held the test of time very well.

Thought there were some notes of early primus and even som guitar that sounded a bit like phish. Overall I was impressed with a few of the songs (xyz especially) and thought that the 40 minute run Time went by crazy fast. Agree with Pat that I’ve never been a big fan of rush. Listening to the whole album gave me a better sense of their sound and earned a higher rating from me.

Tom Sawyer is always rockin. Camera Eye a rager that was new to me. Still, album seems a bit one-note at times, but maybe that's just Rush to me. Interesting that there's only ever a lead singer - no backup vocals, etc.

Even as as non musician, the time signature changes are wild.

Not a Rush fan, but I do enjoy Tom Sawyer & Limelight

Fanade… inte lika hårt som jag mindes

The first four songs are all absolutely great, but the project really starts to meander after limelight and vital signs sucks...

crazy to only have 7 songs on an album

very good i enjoyed 20/30 anythign above a 25/30 i will add to topster or listen daily

Preferred the more prog rock tracks.

This one was completely new to me. Not usually a fan of prog-rock, but this was OK I think partly due to their stripped down sound as a 3 piece

I don't know - would have to listen again. It's both quite good, quite catchy, but also quite annoying. 'Limelight' is very good.

I enjoyed this group esp. Tom Sawyer

5/10 average

Great prog/new wave sound. However vocal delivery leaves it feeling outdated

I consider myself a fan of prog rock. I count Yes, ELP, Genesis, and Procol Harum among my all-time favorite bands. So while listening to this I was trying to figure out why I've never really connected with Rush. There's no doubt they are extremely talented and proficient on their instruments. I think it's that they lack any sort of emotional connection. Their music is super precise, but it sounds as if it's being played by a computer. It's lacking any type of human feel to it (for me at least). It's a good album but I can't get past that aspect. 3 stars.

Catchy, certainly need more than one play through

some of the songs I like the best, but it's still a Rush album...

I remember putting together my iTunes library as a youth when that was still a hot new thing. When it came to Moving Pictures, I enthusiastically added Tom Sawyer, ambivalently added Limelight, and passed on the rest. A decade and a half later that is still pretty much the takeaway. "The Camera Eye" and "Witch Hunt" were actually kinda fun too, but nothing I fell in love with.

Knew a couple of songs, Tom Sawyer and limelight. Giving a three could be four if it had one more standout song. Enjoyed it

I thought I wouldn't like it but I found myself head bobbing along to it so i must have enjoyed the guitar/vocal shenanigans

Solid rock album with a couple bangers

Just OK. Not bad, but not a favorite either.

It was a good listen, but not for me

The first song on the album makes me feel like I stepped into a sci-fi movie/show. 10/10 for the instrumentals, but the vocals are a bit too much for me at times. Tom Sawyer, Limelight and YYZ weren't bad, but the rest were eh. Overall, I'll give it a 3/5 stars. Not probably going to go out of my way to listen to it again.

One of the better OK albums

cool album. will probably check out more rush.

Good but not my cuppa tea

alrightl. 3/5

The Witch Hunt and Vital Signs closed out the album in some style. I preferred the more synth focused tracks with some of the others drowning in drum solos.

Enjoyed listening to this in the sun today. Vital Signs with its distinctly reggae flavour is a song I will be revisiting. Best track: Vital Signs.

I should like this, yet my Zappa-lovin ass will call this "too angular and chaotic."

3.5/5. Some decent prog rock, nothing special. Drags a bit towards the end

Not bad, but not a Rush fan

I love a good period drama so Witch Craft was my favourite song

Personally I'm not a heavy metal fan but appreciate the talent and loved the drums and guitar in this album. I'd be unlikely to choose it again over other albums but glad I'm aware of it. Definitely some tracks I really enjoyed.

awesome drummer

Onverwacht best leuk.

Technically impressive, but something is still not great for me. I feel like I would have a better appreciation for the album if I had more musical knowledge

Okay, not amazing but decent I guess light rock? I know some people love Rush and I don't get that from this but it's compotent.

Eh. It's fine.

🤘🏼

Rock progresivo. Una canción conocida.

Not great, not bad

Tom Sawyer is a classic but I don’t think I’ve ever listened to so much Rush in one setting. It all became... one note after awhile.

RUSH - one of the best US rockbands but this album is not one of her best. For me it's ok.

Not bad

Incredibly mid 2.8

Listened to at least a little of each song. Standard 1980s rock. Not making my list for a re-listen.

I knew the song Tom Sawyer but didn't know it was Rush. I appreciate the instrumentation but don't especially enjoy it. Not keen on the vocals, but found myself enjoying some of the jammy parts.

I don't always want to listen to Rush, but when I do I have a really good time.

Rush is great, this album has a few of their best songs. Other songs showcase their compositional/technical chops. Highlights: -Tom Sawyer -YYZ -Limelight

Technically impressive stuff, but the vocals are a barrier for me in enjoying the music.

instrumentals were far more enjoyable than vocals 🎨

Like Rush. But decent

Not bad. Classic 80s progressive rock

Admittingly not a huge fan of Prog Rock, but Tom Sawyer and YYZ are good songs. If the rest of the album had the same strength it would be a 4, but the others are quite cheesy to me. The guitar work and synths are good though, but the vocals can either be great or... very hammy.

I have to admit to a certain technical proficiency in Rush's music. Tom Sawyer comes out of the gate strong, but they're not all bangers.

Great album.

tom sawyer is great but the rest is just a little bit to standard from what id like

very angsty, journey-sounding

I swear this week has been all misses. I know I should love Rush but his voice has always just driven me up the wall. Good music bad voice. Also what the hell is Tom Sawyer even about, what does Tom Sawyer have to do with anything in that song? Red Barchetta feels like he wrote a story while also separately wrote a song, then tried to crowbar it into the song he wrote, like the music doesn't even make sense with the lyrics. Like YYZ, that's a great song - no annoying voice or stupid lyrics. Wow, this album just really circles the drain after Limelight, all of those songs could just fall off the face of the earth and I don't think anyone would notice. I'm realizing it's not just Geddy Lee's voice but that his lyrics are so overly complex that the song just seems clunky. I don't mean to be so critical of this album, it was just real slog for me to get through.

Not a lot to this album for me after the hits.

instrumentally sound, vocals were rly annoying and offputting for the music. and how the songwriting works around them ruins much of the potential of the songs and instrument playing (even when the lyrics are sound and fine). it all sounds a bit too sanitized honestly (except for yyz). B-side was much more cluttered and tatters the consistency from the first side. H4.

2.5 rounded down

Well, just not my taste

did not like

It was a little bit better than 2112, but still not my thing.

A few days ago I reviewed Kollaps. The friend I was with who was wearing the Einstürzende Neubauten T-shirt is also very much a Rush fan. There is NO WAY any of that story would have happened if he had a Rush tee on that day. Rush is like woman repellant.

Probably didn’t give it the attention it deserves. Played it as background music, can’t say it grabbed me. Will play again

Ok but after a bit it all sounds the same

Ikke min kopp te.

“Prepare to be ‘Rushified’” It was through this quote from the film *I Love You, Man*, starring Paul Rudd, that I first came across the band Rush, and having now listened to this album, I’d give it 2 stars...

I should like Rush. I dont. They are overated in my opinion. But a lit of people adore them so i may be wrong.

Ikke lige for mig.

Giving this garbage a reluctant second star entirely due to the Von Erichs.

Look its not bad, it’s just not the type of rock I’m into

Pre Listen: I've not listened to Rush at all really. If I've heard one of their songs at some point, it's been entirely incidental. I'm excited to listen to their work, the last album reviewed on here was by Yes, and quite a few reviews with a negative opinion of them said how they favored Rush as a Prog Rock band active around similar times. So we shall see. Notable Tracks: YYZ - My favorite track on the album. Has some weaker points, especially the intro, but overall is some good ol' rockin. The Camera Eye - My least favorite track. Sort of a nothing-burger song. Goes on for much too long and is much too repetitive. Post Listen: It's an album, it's prog-rock. I don't know man, it's just sort of...music? I'm rather ambivalent to this album, more so than others I've listened to up to this point. There wasn't really anything unique I noticed about the sound. Some songs bordered on boring even. I bet it would be awesome to hear this album live at the very least? I think this is the most "Dad Rock" album I've heard in a long time. The bass player has more talent than anyone else on the band methinks. This is the first album covered on here where I didn't recognize a single song from. Understandably so. I don't really have much else to say outside of that. 2/5.

I just can’t I’ve tried

[album #7] Obviously really talented musicians but really didn’t enjoy the vocalist. i did this his voice “matched’ the instrumentals well but i just didn’t like listening to it! drumming was really great, which was the only thing i knew about rush going in to listening to this. overall not for me but did have some positives. standout tracks: YYZ, limelight. probably a 2/5 for me

Being that Rush is a big-time rock and roll band, you would think that I would really enjoy their music. I don’t. I like a handful of their tunes (Tom Sawyer is excellent! Free Will is great!) but it’s like they try too hard and end up ruining the good things they have going on. I found myself wanting to skip tracks and by then end wishing it was over.

A bit "dad rock" for me

I have always wanted, but have never been able, to like Rush.

does nothing for me. but they do slappa da bass big time.

school of rock type beat

Lo escuché mientras me bañaba

This was so hit or miss for me. I've never been the biggest fan of Tom Sawyer, but Limelight is one of my favorite classic rock songs of all time. I thought the rest were either fine or just sort of boring. I did sort of thing that I would like this more than I actually did.

I ride through Willowdale pretty regularly and one does not get the sense it would give birth to anything to do with rock and roll, even of the progressive rock sort. Anyhow, never was a Rush kid, never will be, but I respect that this is The Group for a lot of my fellow YYZ and GTA residents.

Maybe I don’t get 80s Rock

i really dont like rush. It drives my heartbeat up for expecting something good but there is nothing good coming. Its like a never ending drum solo.

Have listened to a lot of Rush over the years. The jams are good, but Geddy's voice won't ever not be annoying.

Confirming my understanding that I am not a "Rush Guy". I started watching the documentary about them a while back and bailed because I just couldn't get on board with the personalities and music. Tom Sawyer unequivocally slaps, though, and I cannot deny Limelight. I'm not a total hater. 2 stars: I get the appeal but I don't see myself listening to this album again.

I probably did not dedicate sufficient focus to listening to this, but I didn't like it.

I love the electronic sound, it reminds me of the TARDIS ‘vworph’ sound effect. Also pleasantly surprised by the singer. Tom Sawyer: Guessing it’s about the book, which I tried to read and got bored of. Perhaps it’s a sign to reread. In an instrumental break there was a chord progression which was so reminiscent of a bunch of other songs, so I can only assume that this song is an inspiration for others. Not many artists mix electronic sounds with electric guitar so I’m very happy that they’ve done this. As well as including drums, modern music has lost drums and it’s very upsetting. Reminds me of Massive Attack. Red Barchetta: The plucking sound at the start really hits in my heart, then the guitar coming in pads it out and makes the previously ominous sound so jolly. The voice is a clear inspiration for other lead singers. The storytelling is unique. YYZ: The guitar is so insane. My only criticism is that’s it’s a bit longer for an instrumental break, and for showing off proficiency it’s not amazing. They’re definitely masters, but I’ve been more impressed in just instrumentals opposed to whole instrumentals breaks. Limelight: There’s a really nice coherency in guitar and drums. The vocals are obviously consistent. The storytelling is very similar to Bowie - this song reminding me of ‘Moonage Daydream’ and ‘Life on Mars’ for some reason. The camera eye: Resurgence of the electronic noise. I love it, it’s so mysterious and captivating. Again, it hugely reminds me of other songs which I can’t quite put my finger on. Over 3 minutes of musical introduction is hardcore but cool. The vocals are very fast and upbeat, it’s almost as if they’re on 1.25x speed and I love it. Again, the storytelling is great, but I felt it dragged on. I felt myself not as engaged as with some of the other songs. Witch hunt: This one’s different, and I like it a lot. It’s darker, gloomier, the pedal effect on the guitar is grungey and I love it. I’m a sucker for a bit of distortion and crackle. I much prefer the darker imagery that’s part of the storytelling in this one. Vital sign: Okay, woah, whiplash from the genre change. I was thinking that it was a very coherent album which followed a storyline but the previous song threw me out of whack. There is a thread linking all the songs, but the change up in genre made it harder to keep a grasp on. I like the lyrics of this one as well, as well as the cadence. It’s up beat and peppy. The voice is so satisfying. Overall, I would say a 2/5. I can see that it’s been a huge source of inspiration but it’s nothing special. Others have done better and others will continue to do better. Inspiration/sounds like: Siouxsie and the Banshees, David Bowie, Massive Attack, Queen (parts of Radio Gaga), a lot of goth/alt-subgenre songs such as Black Cathedral

It was lowk interesting cuz i dont normally like albums with this kind of sound. Hit e59 on balatro, wish I got better vouchers to go serpent hunting. Last song defo stuck out the most as the worst, really liked the camera eye. last song was just so repetitive

Rush was not what I thought. Someone could change my mind but this just wasn't for me

I really wanted to like this, I really did. Got excited at the first minute or so of YYZ, but the rest of the track didn't live up to it. If you like Prog, this might be good.

Bit too much heavy metal imo

No me gustó realmente, tiene buenas guitarras y sonidos igualmente

I love you man

A bit gimmicky

It's cool, I like that each song varies from each other drastically.

I would not hear it again, i think it has no mistery, though there are pretty good guitars i wish it had something that makes it diffrent from the rest

right imma rush to stuff em into the trashcan

When people say music in the eighties sucked they mean this kind of music.

This does not rock. AC/DC rock. ZZ Top rocks. Rush does not rock. They have heavier parts to their songs that trick you into thinking they might rock, but they don't. They switch it up to the next thing after 8 bars and maybe it's a good 8 bars or maybe it's bad but it doesn't matter 'cuz it's about to change, baby! What if we did prog rock but didn't incorporate all the other goofy shit prog does? What if we just made it with guitars and synths and drums and made some math-y type stuff because we're really good at our instruments? What if we cribbed our lyrical style from dog-eared 70s sci-fi lite trade paperbacks you can buy in bulk at a used bookstore? What if we dabbled in the anthemic parts of prog without making an anthem? What if our concept of a breakdown was soft? It's weird why this bothers me. I mostly don't dislike it (limelight is an insanely corny song, though) but I certainly don't actively like it. I'd heard Tom Sawyer and YYZ before and they're ok but put in album form the sound just wears on you. Mercifully under 40 minutes here, album length being one of the prog excesses these guys did not indulge in. Mostly I just want them to pick a lane and DO it. Stop fucking around. Your virtuosity is not what makes good music, so stop showing off. Just make the song. Although, again, Limelight as a pretty straightforward song seems like maybe they can't, that's why it's all jumbled. This isn't as bad as the 2 I'm giving it, but I think I'm a little irritated. Like I said, I've heard some songs (that I think are made worse by being a part of an album - big negative), but mostly, having never heard a Rush album, I expected...more. Sure, Neal Pert is the professor (the facilitator of some work training made us all very aware of that as he air drummed through the modules) but who gives a single shit if the music is stupid masquerading as smart? And that's the other finger in the eye: I've heard Rush fans talk about how great Rush is (and in concert, it's probably a wild show - like I said, they're virtuosos) but frankly this just doesn't rock. The distance between the technical capability/mythos with the actual product just pisses me off so I'm takin' it out on the score.

I really wanted to like this more than I did.

Not for me

i would really like to speak with whoever came up with this list. what is your criteria. what astounded you about this so badly that you had to include it. it’s not like it sucks but it isn’t so good either. i know 1001 albums is a lot but i promise you this didn’t need to be on the list. two at most and that is because im feeling generous! no downloads obvi.

To be honest I struggled with this. I recognise the amazing musicianship, and the (right-wing libertarian?) lyrics are interesting, but this is so not my thing.

Not one that made a great impression on me. The overall sound is fine, especially in the first half. But there’s just too much that goes along far too long. Yes, I know you can play the guitar, yes I know you have a synthesiser, we don’t need a ten minute song to show it! An example of what I don’t enjoy about prog rock.

2/5. So boring. I understand what they were trying to do, but abandoning every melody and piece of consistency, outside of the first track, really hurts the listening experience. I heard very little direction and few patterns that allowed me to grasp onto the concept of the song. This is just not my thing.

just can't come around on this. no nostalgia to lean on either.

indifferent

The worst kind of music genre - soft rock beige bilge

Music for nerdy 12 year old boys who've had far too much sugar.

More like a 2.5

This sucks. Prog has the self indulgent shittiness of jazz but without any of the skill or complexity. It feels like I've been listening for hours and it's been about 25 minutes

I thought I like Rush… Tom Sawyer is great song, no doubt. However, the rest of the album is too sophisticated music with weird vocals. I like Counterparts album much more for its listener friendly sound.

I don't know what to say, i enjoyed the most of the album but only 2 songs really liked me

too much drumsss

The musicianship is good. The lyrics are thoughtful. But I can’t get along with this kind of music, with its grandiose but purposeless chord changes, overwrought drumming and intricate but dull guitar solos.

It was fun...just not a huge fan of the style. Neil sounds great and a few of those would be really fun to play to, but it was just eh for me overall

Over the top and quite annoying

Low 3 musically, but I can't stand the singers voice.

Pretty good

All right. The instrumentals are enjoyable but I don't really like the main singer's voice and nothing really stood out to me.

I’m not a prog rock fan and it really shows that I don’t like the album. YZZ was the highlight cause my guitar friends like that stuff but yeah not for me.

It was just ok

Living in Canada means hearing pretty much every song on this album on classic rock radio. Doesn't mean I enjoy most of it though.

Tom Sawyer: 3/5 Red Barchetta: 1.5/5 Limelight: 2.5/5 The Camera Eye: 1/5 Witch Hunt: 1.5/5 Vital signs:1/5 Guitar was the best part of every song, vocals suck ass, very 1980’s and boring; I had to force myself to not skip most of the songs, not my taste at all.

Album 94. Moving Pictures (https://open.spotify.com/album/55YlfsaFPB5HTlhxY114CI?si=fgNCEYroR-W1c8AYZ3VZwg) — Rush (1981) Unexpected, it was hard to listen to. I didn’t get into this prog rock music. It’s mostly bland and dull for me. The Camera Eye was long as hell, I started to hate it. 2/5 —————————————— Liked: — YYZ

Can't say that this was for me. Prog rock was always a pretty elusive term to me, but I guess this album helped focus some of its more traditional elements and definitely the things I always hear as criticisms. By the time I got to YYZ I was ready to put the album down; it just wasn't doing much to grab me. Lyrically I found the album dull. I read a lot that this album was the start of the decline for Rush, so I may need to go back to see what was going on earlier.

I can't listen to rock anymore

poor rock, maybe 2.5

Never heard anything from this album before, nor from this band as far as I know. I liked the rock elements well enough, but the synthesizery stuff is not my cup of tea.

Another band I unfairly dismissed after their first single, time for a reassessment. Walked a frozen Canadian river 3 days in a row listening to this album, nicely fit the setting. They sure create a space of sound, I didn't expect to love Geddy's bass so much, and I've learned a lot from fan videos about why their following loves them so hard. So my interest in their music hasn't grown much, but my respect has. Curious whether 2112 moves my needle a bit more, and very curious how Anike Nilles fills the Neil Peart fills.

Meh, it was fine

There wasn't a song that made me happy enough.

It’s OK, not totally my jam.

Første låt "Tom Sawyer" var bra, hadde veldig digg gitarsolo. Bra riff. Ellers var albumet litt kjedelig. Ble ganske repetitivt etter hvert.

ik was niet echt fan

pfff niet mijn ding

Too many synths. Not a huge fan off a first listen

type a shit ur dad listens to while fixing that same old car he worked on for your whole childhood.

I don’t particularly like Rush, so I knew that I wasn’t going to enjoy this. I’ve heard worse. But I’d not be listening to it again.

Just did nothing for me. I liked some of the instrumentation. Didn’t find any of it gripping.

Fun album a little bit forgettable though

Too many notes!

Clever album cover, shoutout Vsauce. Didn't rly like the songs tho

Did nothing for me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There was some cool postrock stuff going on, completely ruined when they started singing though. YYZ was surprisingly good.

not bad, just not my style

This is a relisten, and still doesn’t click with me, I feel the same about this as I did before. Just feel like there’s something missing from here for my tastes but I can’t quite describe it. YYZ is a cool track though.

3.5/10

A bit mid some good instrumentals but not really my style

Already listened. Did not like

I just can't stand Geddy Lee's voice, the vocal, and the lyrics. Music is good, but I just can't do it.

I couldn't stand listening to some of the songs. I don't think it's my vibe. Favorite track: Red Barchetta

Rating: 3/10

Not bad tho just not for me

Rush's 2112 was one of the first albums I got on this list, and I hated it. I still don't like them. I find their vocals particularly annoying, I don't really know why. Too high-pitched? A bit hair metal? Anyway, this was less objectionable than 2112. I like the theme of Limelight and it's an earworm, but I still don't like it as a song. And Witch Hunt starts very Spinal Tap, very Stonehenge.

Review: 2.5 Fav track: YYZ Fav lyrics: “All the world’s indeed a stage We are merely players Performers and portrayers” — Limelight

This is the band that made me think i disliked prog rock. It's not the voice so much as the pretension and the length and the lyrics all in a combination, the songs just never get anywhere. Tom Sawyer though is good.

I don't think I like Rush. As musicians, they're great. The songs don't grab me, though. It's not a matter of not liking prog. I do: I love Genesis, for instance. But this didn't grab me at all. 4/10.

Not my cup of tea. Too much of only going up, drumfills and glamrock instead of psych that takes people on a journey.

Not really my vibe still appreciate it though!

Bästa låtar: Red Barchetta (riffet påminner lite om The Cure!)

Is this the second Rush album now? Feels like it, and I still remain very confused by them. They seem like talented musicians, kinda interestingly heavy and proggy, however, the vocals are so lightweight it sort of drags the whole thing down for me. It’s all just OK, but I’m most confused by who would actually be really into this.

Rap is not my thing.

hell yeah Tom Sawyer but the rest is whatever

Synthy. Will I ever like 80s music that isn’t the smiths, the cure or talking heads? I can see why it’s on this list however.

Imagine if Van Halen was made up of castrated eunuchs.

Yeah, rock! Favorite songs: Tom Sawyer, YYZ, Vital Signs

Dig the polyrhythm, and I better understand the band now for sure. Have never loved the overall vibe.

Some good tracks but not stand out.

A fun album that unfortunately falls off after “Limelight”.

It's just a guitar

First album on this odyssey that is entirely new to me. It's also entirely forgettable. I mean it's fine, I have no particular objections, but no particular desire to ever hear it again. It's kind of prog-adjacent but far less interesting and saddled with that horrible tinny guitar effect that was popular with soft rock bands in the 80s.

Kinda mid outside of Tom Sawyer...

This is me discovering I'm not all that into prog-rock. Some of the songs drag on too much for my liking, quite a whiny voice but some impressive guitars save it from a 1.

**An ok album, many tracks with loud vocals and banging instruments. A few pleasant easy listening tracks

I enjoyed some bits of this, screeching guitars, drums fills, tempo changes and electronic beep boops, but I couldn't get fully on board with it and couldn't finish it. But some of the instrumentals reminded me of Mariokart and I like Mariokart.

Kind of experimental, but not in a particularly interesting way. May have been something different at the time, but now feels like very generic prog rock.

Nah mate. Generic rock/metal - not for me.

it was fine, very 80s rock but nothing particularly exciting for me 4/10

I know people rave about Rush but I just don't get it.

as interesting and innovative as it is tedious and traditional. certainly didn't hate it but wanted to skip most songs about half way through, no matter how "intricate," i think their ingredients simply don't suit my taste. talented musicians, i do like the singer's voice, but the vocal melodies are quite limited (even though the singer has a very unique range) and i do love the drama and size, but the flavors don't land. The drumming is exuberant but doesnt quite move me. the guitar is pretty generic outside of solos and i'm not crazy about the tone. probably has to do too much lifting. i like the synth work and patches and textures on the album, plus the sound effects. perhaps it's a good example of what differentiates prog rock from jazz fusion maybe? even though it sounds like it should be the same thing? not bad, not for me. vital signs and witch hunt were nice surprise songs

not gonna lie, that lowkey sucked hated pretty much every second of it and couldnt finish it😭 idkkkk every song sounded the same and it just made me like really bored and yeah just not a fan

Man I don't get why people like rush

Couple classics but bad memories of Pete mares blasting this over and over freshman year at JMU

These were the Rush tunes on my high school radio station, and my verdict is pretty much the same now as it was then: some great moments, Geddy Lee's voice periodically shines through, but way too much self-important prog-ish noodling.

I can't believe I made it through an entire Rush album. It gets a couple of stars for technical skill and Geddy Lee being a mensch and a big Blue Jays fan, but don't make me do it again.

Another big nostalgia trip. Bryan LOVED these guys and this album and it was playing all the time at the Luizzi house for the 80s…never my favorite but love the memories.

the cover is cooler than the music

turns out , as I learnt from this project, I didn't love progressive rock coming in, or knew exactly what it was. It's not my fav genre, and this album was a miss for me at the start. However, after a few playbacks i came around to it more and ended up enjoying a few tracks specially on side B.

Has it aged well compared to similar bands? I'm not sure, it's just the start of my musical journey!

I thought this might be one where it was better than I remembered, but it was not :(

i understand neil peart is one of the greatest drummers of all time but i just didn’t like this and i didn’t like the vocals at all

Für mich zu hart

I've never cared for Rush and listening to this album solidified my opinion. Geddy Lee's voice sounds like sheet metal being crammed into a woodchipper. Synthesizers were annoying as well.

Meh. Couple of interesting moments

After Tom Sawyer, I lost interest in the album

Reminds me of my childhood friends’ weird older brothers. Technically, I guess it’s a good record. Technically.

Gets old

Very 80's rock is.all.I can say. Good album.for its time but nothing special.

More Rush. Still so serious. This is why we had to have punk rock.

When you want to be The Police but don't have the skills.

I don't know why, but the entire album I have only liked half of each song and then dreaded the rest. It felt like Spectrum was throttling my internet and I'm rubberbanding across a GMOD map trying to find props in prop hunt. A very specific feeling, but I'm left with a partial satisfaction with the overall album.

Not my favorite band. I find the lead's voice unpleasant.

4.2 // Rush is technically rock, but the music is too unapproachable on a technical level for me to call it rock. That's not to say it's bad; it's more of a clinic in how to drum, how to play bass, and how to sing.

I just don't like rush

This was a bit heavy for me. Not my favorite album and not really sure if I would listen to it again 5/10

One decent song (Limelight) and a lot of garbage. Lee's voice makes me want to rip my earlobes off. This album reminds me of being dragged to a Rush concert in high school, and it was just as bad then.

nothing album

Puts the 'ous' in 'pompous'.

I always think of Rush as being pretty corny. Rush does remind me of my favorite TV show of all time (Freaks and Geeks) and one of the funniest movies I’ve seen (I Love You, Man) both starring Jason Segel. I knew a couple of songs on this album (Tom Sawyer and Limelight). It was fine, but some of the songs were too long.
