Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
4/5
Listening to "Junkyard" by the Birthday Party was a bad experience and made me doubt that Nick Cave could make a good album.
But his next project with the Bad Seeds made me think otherwise.
The songs are brilliantly written and could be poems.
Fun fact: Cave actually provides the gunshots on the second track.
4 stars for "Murder Ballads".

Madonna
3/5
Madonna must've heard "Dummy" by Portishead.
This album proves this assumption.
But it's nowhere near as fantastic as "Dummy".
"Substitute for Love" is my favourite song off "Ray of Light"
After that, it slowly becomes a boring listen.
3 stars for "Ray of Light".

Linkin Park
4/5
I've been waiting for this album.
There's no doubt that "Papercut" is one of my favourite 2000s songs.
Mr Hahn's DJ scratches give "Hybrid Theory" its charm.
It's a shame Linkin Park dropped their cool sound after "Meteora".
However, a few tracks on this album seem like filler.
4 stars for "Hybrid Theory".

Alanis Morissette
5/5
It's one of those albums you love on the first listen.
"You Oughta Know" will be in my head for at least a month.
There's something about Morrisette's singing that I really like.
I should've listened to "Jagged Little Pill" a long time ago.
What an epic way to start the week.
5 stars for "Jagged Little Pill".

Cee Lo Green
1/5
Cee-Lo Green is nothing without Danger Mouse (The musician, not the cartoon).
There's nothing but low-quality '00s R&B.
If "I Am Selling Soul" meant Cee-Lo sold his soul to Satan, then he must've gotten a crappy deal.
"Cee-Lo Green... Is the Soul Machine" is the worst album I've heard in months.
I must've lost my mind, if only I remembered when.
Looks like I'll have to give "Cee-Lo Green.. Is the Soul Machine" the dreaded 1 star.

Bob Dylan
3/5
It's alright, nothing special though.
However, Dylan really can write great songs.
He just isn't the best singer.
Overall, it's decent and introduced many to Bob Dylan's songwriting abilities.
Radiohead
5/5
I'm a big Radiohead fan and I think OK Computer is their best album.
No wonder why it's considered to be one of the best albums of all time.
I wasn't impressed when I first listened to it but it actually grew on me.
A definite 5 stars from me.
The Band
4/5
Actually better than I expected. A solid album that deserves a listen.
I'm actually glad this generator recommended me this.
Just 998 albums to go...
Blur
4/5
Blur is a good band in my opinion.
This is the album that made them a household name.
What do I think of it? It's really good.
Highlights include "Girls and Boys" and "Parklife".
Black Sabbath
4/5
It isn't as good as Paranoid but it still has charm.
It's my first time listening to this so it might grow on me.
"Changes" is a nice song, different from Black Sabbath's back catalogue but it's fine as itself. Another highlight is "Supernaut".
I'll give it a 4.
The Rolling Stones
4/5
"Gimme Shelter" is fantastic! That's the first thing I'll say about this album.
The other songs are great but not on the same level as the aforementioned song. Before listening to this album, I had only heard a few songs of the Stones. Give it chance and I think you'll like it.
U2
3/5
I don't really care about U2 but this album is quite good.
It's just not my kind of album. Some songs are actually fun.
I wasn't feeling it when I listened to this.
The Yardbirds
3/5
The album is pretty good in some places. It sounds nice but is also generic.
I was a bit disappointed after hearing good things about them. It's not terrible, it's just not the top tier album I was expecting.
Elton John
4/5
A nice album full of ballads, nothing significant except for "Tiny Dancer".
A few songs sound similar to each other but it's ok.
I've got a cold right now so I can't enjoy to its fullest.
Elton and Bernie are a great writing duo.
I'll give it 4 stars.
LCD Soundsystem
4/5
I like this album after listening to it for the first time.
I was slightly put off by the long lengths of the tracks, thinking they would be boring and repetitive. Instead it's groovy and full of surprises throughout. LCD Soundsystem will performing in Glastonbury this year so that's something to look forward to.
The Smashing Pumpkins
5/5
The hits on this album are fantastic including "1979" and "Bullet With Butterfly Wings". The other songs are also great.
MCatIS dips into a diverse range of styles- Check out the title track and "Tales of a Scorched Earth"!
It's albums like this that makes me love alt-rock.
The Black Crowes
5/5
This album was a very pleasant surprise. I've barely heard of the Black Crowes prior to getting recommended this album by the generator.
It isn't a grower, it's a classic that'll get you hooked by the first minute.
A few records have done that to me, not even some of my favourite albums
could enthral me at the first listen. That's how special this album is.
5 stars, nothing less.
Beach House
5/5
A chill album that's pretty good. I was impressed when I heard Beach House's "Space Song" on "Depression Cherry". Like that song, "Teen Dream" is a fantastic masterpiece. The vocals are awesome and fit with the tone of the album. I seem to keep getting recommended great records like this.
Miriam Makeba
4/5
This is the first time I've ever heard of Miriam Makeba or any of her work.
She really could sing beautifully. It's something different for me, something new. She fought against the evil system of apartheid. May she be remembered for years to come. All in all, this is a nice album.
Stevie Wonder
5/5
This is a great LP where the album tracks stand out on their own.
Stevie Wonder is a great singer, songwriter and instrumentalist and "Talking Book" shows that. The fantastic song "Superstition" is on this album. Another one in my flow of great albums, courtesy of this generator. "Maybe Your Baby" is one underrated song to look out for while listening.
"Talking Book" is consistently great throughout and gets 5 stars from me.
Elvis Presley
3/5
It's Elvis so expect some great vocals all over this album.
But it's clear that he was better suited for singles.
That's why you only see "best of" compilations of Presley's work.
The album tracks are standard 60s rock tunes.
It's good but not great.
Talking Heads
4/5
It's a solid album with lots of good songs.
I think the legendary musician and producer Brian Eno's output on this record helps.
The whole band is at their finest here.
I did kind of expect it to be a boring, generic album before hearing it.
It turns out that it's actually a fine LP.
Moral: Try any new or unfamiliar albums - you might like it!
Turbonegro
3/5
It's got a nice sound, combining punk and metal, although sometimes not blending together well.
Some of the lyrics could easily fit into unfunny comedy rock.
I thought this would be a more serious record.
It's not bad but could do better.
Apocalypse Dudes gets 3 stars.
Sex Pistols
3/5
It just isn't as cool or shocking as it once was.
To me, the Sex Pistols seem like any other punk band from the late 70s.
"God Save the Queen" is a banger along with a few other tracks.
NMtBHtSP has tracks that sound often sound indistinguishable to each other.
However, punk and most of its sub-genres wouldn't exist without the Sex Pistols.
3 stars for revolutionising music and paving the way for music artists I love, also for being quite good.
The 13th Floor Elevators
2/5
It can be considered cool in a way.
The jug sounds like a drunk pigeon.
The bass is pretty good while the singer sounds like a discount Axl Rose, who isn't great to begin with.
This album has songs that could fit in a cheap, old "Best of the 60s" compilation CD.
There's better psychedelic albums out there.
I'm just that the album's not a total stinker.
2 stars for this record.
Joni Mitchell
4/5
A very good album with great writing.
Joni is a great singer-songwriter.
"Blue" still holds up today after 53 years.
The only song I've heard from her before listening to this was "Parking Lot".
Another one off the list.
4 stars from me.
Radiohead
4/5
"The Bends" has a lot of great singles including "Fake Plastic Trees".
It's not as amazing as "OK Computer" in my opinion but it's solid.
This was the album that made Radiohead superstars.
Thom Yorke is at his best here.
"The Bends" is another reason why Radiohead is one of my favourite bands.
I'll give it 4 stars.
Fred Neil
2/5
Probably the worst album I've heard so far.
Fred Neil was like Bob Dylan but worse.
It's at least listenable to human ears.
At least Fred tried to make a record.
I won't be listening to this again.
2 stars, barely making it past 1.
Scissor Sisters
3/5
This album is a mixed bag.
It's annoying when they sing like the Bee Gees but it's good when they don't.
There's some good electronic production in many tracks.
"Mary" is actually splendid and a highlight of the album.
It's too poppy for my taste.
3 stars for a decent album.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
3/5
The titular track is a long epic with some cool segments throughout.
The songs on the other side are mostly just filler.
EL&P can do great songs like "Fanfare for the Common Man" (not on this album).
I'm surprised they never did a soundtrack for a movie. They could've been amazing.
Anyway, "Tarkus" is an OK album.
3 stars from me.
A Tribe Called Quest
5/5
This debut by A Tribe Named Quest is superb.
Q-Tip has a lot of great flows on this album.
Everyone else done well too.
It's about time I got a hip hop record.
I adore the production that's present throughout
I'm looking forward to hearing more of ATNQ's work.
5 stars for this masterpiece.
John Lennon
4/5
There's quite a few fantastic songs in "Imagine".
The titular track, "How Do You Sleep?" and "I Don't Wanna Be a Soldier Mama" are my favourites.
This is one of the best post-Beatles albums by any of the band's members.
John's activism is visible throughout the album's lyrics and that's a good thing.
It's better than some of McCartney's solo works. (Sorry Paul)
4 stars for this classic record.
Tom Waits
1/5
This guy has an atrocious voice.
Some of the songs are terrible.
It could've been an improvement if Tom sung better.
There's an occasional good moment here.
Tom Waits has 5 albums on this list. Why?
I think I'll have to give it a single star.
Wilco
2/5
I don't know what to say about this album.
It's alright but it's quite forgettable.
I expected it to be a tad better.
It's a blessing that Tweedy can sing unlike Tom Waits whose album I reviewed yesterday.
The instrumentation is clever in places but it's not enough to stand out.
2 stars for this unremarkable album.
Meat Puppets
2/5
An interesting mix of country and punk.
But "Meat Puppets 2" is quite boring.
I've gotten a few duds in a row.
There's some good tracks here and there.
But that isn't enough to save this album.
2 stars this time.
Charles Mingus
4/5
Wow, this is much better than I thought.
This album is entirely instrumental jazz.
I never got bored while listening.
It might be because I really like jazz.
I've never heard of Mingus before Friday.
4 stars from me.
Janelle Monáe
3/5
Another unknown album to me.
I've never heard of Janelle before.
"ArchAndroid" is good but not great.
It just sounds like other albums from that period.
I like its style most of time.
I'll give it 3 stars.
The Who
3/5
It's a cool album with nothing special about it.
It's a bit boring during the middle.
Robert's voice is really good.
The lyrics are like any other song in the mid 60s.
At least it's not bargain bin compilation material.
3 stars for some nice songs.
2/5
I don't care for Devo.
"Q:AWNM A:WAD" is weird and not wonderful with filler throughout.
The lead singer isn't that good at his job.
The others are a bit better with varying quality.
"Uncontrollable Urges" and "Shrivel Up" are fun songs though.
2 stars for this insignificant album.
The Rolling Stones
1/5
Most of the songs are just terrible covers.
The Rolling Stones have become icons nowadays.
But this a low effort shot at making an album.
"Tell Me" (One of the only original songs) is a blast though.
I'm glad that the songs are short.
1 star for "Self Titled" and "Tell Me" saves it from being complete garbage.
Bill Evans Trio
3/5
I don't have much to say about this album.
But what I can tell you is that the bass sounds improvised.
Also, I really like jazz so that's a good thing.
It does get a bit boring towards the end.
I can't wait until Monday for my next recommendation.
I'll give it 3 stars.
The Verve
4/5
An album I really like.
The singles are fantastic, especially "The Drugs Don't Work".
I think the rest of "Urban Hymns" is less impressive but not bad.
With an overabundance of Britpop albums on the list, I can see why others hate it.
Also, the 6 1/2 minute gap between "Come On" and the hidden track is a bit too long.
This album is a nice addition to my listening portfolio.
4 stars for a solid record.
Public Enemy
3/5
This album has lots of great beats.
There's also some good verses.
It's not the best rap album especially compared to A Tribe Named Quest's work.
That Anthrax feature at the end was cool.
I've reviewed a lot of albums now.
3 stars for a good effort.
The Pogues
4/5
This album started off with a bang but fizzled out a bit near the end.
Shane McGowan's accent while singing is fantastic.
The Christmas song "Fairytale of New York" is here if you know the Pogues from that.
There's some great songs to be heard here.
RIP Shane McGowan.
4 stars today.
Stephen Stills
4/5
I really liked this album.
It's much better than I thought it would be.
Stephen Stills is a great singer-songwriter.
There's guest appearances from guitar legends Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton.
Another surprise from someone I've never heard of.
I'll give "Self Titled" 4 stars.
Amy Winehouse
4/5
Amy Winehouse is known for having a tragic backstory.
After her death, Amy's music is still listened to a lot.
The album's songs are really good.
I think "Frank" is greater than "Back to Black".
It's way better than I thought.
4 stars from me.
Beatles
4/5
This album was a good change from all the other pop records in the 60s.
There's classics like "Norwegian Wood" and "In My Life".
All four of the Beatles did a fantastic job.
But there's a few generic songs that not a lot of people care about.
Overall, "Rubber Soul" is great.
I'll give a 4 star rating.
Beyoncé
2/5
It's nothing special about this album.
Too many "skits" before some songs.
Beyonce's "Self Titled" album isn't terrible but her brand of
R&B doesn't break any new ground.
It's an average album with nothing to write home about.
Beyonce's done better songs.
2 stars for mostly forgettable tracks.
Simple Minds
2/5
An unremarkable album by Simple Minds.
It's alright when it's used as background music.
I'm not into that particular genre.
I hope I get a better album next time.
"Gold Dream" is OK but I expected more.
2 stars for a boring album.
Ray Charles
4/5
This album had a rough start but it got better.
The second half is what makes "The Genius of Ray Charles" shine.
The ballads on that half are great.
I'm usually not a fan of big band music but I like it.
Ray Charles's voice is nice throughout.
I'll give this record 4 stars.
Green Day
3/5
"Dookie" has some good tracks and poor ones.
It's probably just me as I didn't feel like listening to it today.
But it's also because I find pop-punk a bit outdated. (No offence)
It's got a nice sound to it and Billie Jo's voice sometimes works well.
The lyrics are typical to the genre.
3 stars for "Dookie".
Steely Dan
4/5
I thought this album would be cheesy but it's cool.
"Midnite Cruiser" is my favourite track.
It got a bit boring near the end.
My recommendations have started improving again.
Now I'm grateful for that.
4 stars for " Can't Buy a Thrill".
The Offspring
3/5
Some of the songs sound the same.
But others are great hits, especially "Genocide".
Dexter Holland singing sounds out of place and he's more suited for metal.
The good outweighs the bad in this situation.
"Smash" is a mixed album for me.
3 stars for this effort.
The Cure
4/5
"One Hundred Years" and "Pornography" are just awesome.
The others are also pretty amazing.
Robert Smith is a great singer-songwriter, along with everyone else.
I thought The Cure would be one of those overrated 80s bands.
This is really modern for 1982.
4 stars for this classic album.
Jack White
2/5
I never liked Jack White at all.
His bass "solos" and his voice annoy me a bit.
A few songs near the end try hard to sound like the Beatles' "Abbey Road" but fail.
I can appreciate Jack writing almost all of the album and there's a few good ideas.
This album is a stereotype of indie rock.
2 stars for "Blunderbuss."
Dr. Dre
4/5
"The Chronic" is really good.
Snoop Dogg is the best featured artist and this album made him big.
Dr Dre's production is superb as per usual.
G-Funk was revolutionised when Dre released "The Chronic" in 1992.
"Nuthin' but a G Thang" and "Lil' Ghetto Boy" are my favourite tracks.
4 stars for a classic.
Portishead
5/5
Wow, that was an epic experience.
This is my second time listening to "Dummy".
It's better than the first time.
Beth Gibbons' singing and sometimes cryptic lyrics help make the album great.
Along with Massive Attack, Portishead are some of the heroes of trip-hop.
5 stars, no less.
Basement Jaxx
2/5
In theory, this would have been one of the best electronic albums but it wasn't.
The 2 main singles outclass most of "Remedy".
"Same Old Show" is absolutely rubbish and shouldn't be played in public.
I couldn't stand it and felt twice as long.
There are some great songs like "Red Alert".
2 stars for this polarising album.
The Byrds
3/5
A good 60s album with strong Beatles influences.
I'm glad it hasn't got an electric jug unlike the 13th Floor Elevators.
The Byrds are average songwriters akin to Lennon-McCartney.
The Bob Dylan cover was nice, despite the fact that I never listened to the original.
An essential psychedelic rock record.
3 stars for "Younger Than Yesterday".
The Birthday Party
1/5
This is what a sex, drugs and rock & roll band would sound like during their withdrawal period.
I managed to listen to this all the way through.
The lyrics are actually good but the delivery isn't.
"Junkyard" is a headache inducing insult to post-punk.
Just because it's old doesn't mean it's a classic.
1 star for a terrible failure.
The Go-Go's
4/5
This album is quite good.
It's better than the last album I reviewed.
"Lust to Love" is my favourite off "Beauty and the Beat".
The album maintained its quality from start to finish.
The Go-Go's were ahead of their time when this came out.
4 stars for this album.
Marty Robbins
5/5
"Man, I'm gonna hate this." I thought when this album was recommended to me.
But when I listened to "Big Iron", a song I was familiar with, I knew I was about to listen to a bunch of fine hits.
The songwriting on this album is fantastic.
It's definitely one of the best 50s albums.
Step aside, Sinatra! Marty Robbins gets my approval.
5 stars for this memorable classic.
Simon & Garfunkel
5/5
Another surprisingly good album.
"The Boxer" will always be my favourite from Simon and Garfunkel.
What a great way to start the 70s.
A few songs miss the mark a bit but that doesn't matter.
I've still got many albums to review.
5 stars from me.
Sonic Youth
4/5
This album is slightly hard to listen to but also energetic.
I can see why some people hate it.
I'm one of the people who like this.
Most of the album is quite good actually.
But it's far from perfect.
4 stars for "Sister".
Throbbing Gristle
2/5
Half of this album was plain awful.
The rest is either dull or slightly interesting.
I can appreciate some of the synth parts.
Those sound like one of my favourite groups, Boards of Canada.
It's just about better than the Birthday Party.
2 stars for this confused album.
Big Brother & The Holding Company
3/5
It was quite an interesting listen.
Janis Joplin sounds like a cross between Marge Simpson and Robert Plant.
The songs are quite good to listen to.
Adding applause to a studio album isn't a smart move and should be avoided.
"Cheap Thrills" is a nice psychedelic album.
I'll give it 3 stars.
De La Soul
4/5
I forgot to listen to this album on Monday so I'm playing it and the next album on Tuesday.
Tuesday Update: I'm now listening to it.
The flows in a lot of songs here are very good.
Some of the interludes suck though.
But that doesn't stop "3 Feet High and Rising" from being great.
4 stars for this interesting listen.
Arrested Development
4/5
The first thing I'll say about this album is that the production is incredible.
There's some really good lyrics to be found.
Another gem from this list.
The only problem is that it becomes a bit dull near the end.
"3Y5M2DITL..." is the second alt hip-hop album I got in a row.
4 stars for a great album.
The Waterboys
4/5
The first two tracks are amazing.
I think The Waterboys are one of the reasons why a genre shift isn't always a terrible idea.
Also, it has aged well since the 80s.
Unfortunately, the overall greatness isn't always consistent throughout the album.
At least "Fishermen's Blues" is better than I expected.
4 stars from me.
Ghostface Killah
5/5
Having experience from the Wu-Tang Clan, Ghostface Killah knows how to make a good album.
The MF DOOM produced tracks are sublime.
"Fishscale" has a lot of classic guest artists like the rest of Wu-Tang.
GK's verses are often brilliant.
The skits aren't terrible either.
5 stars for this endeavour.
Depeche Mode
5/5
A really amazing electronic album.
All 9 tracks are just brilliant.
"Enjoy the Silence" is just another level.
No 80s cheesiness to be found here.
This is the beginning of a new era of awesome music.
5 stars for "Violator".
Jimmy Smith
4/5
There's some nice sounding jazz here.
Nothing too special to make it stand out other than Smith's electric organ skills.
It's not bad in any way but the tracks are indistinguishable from each other.
"Back at the Chicken Shack" is one of those albums to listen to in the background.
It's worth checking out for any jazz fans.
4 stars from me.
Living Colour
4/5
"Cult of Personality" is a fantastic track.
The rest of the album is good as well.
I like Living Colour's style of hard rock.
Like many artists on this list, I've never listened to them.
I forgot to play this album on Tuesday so I'm reviewing it on Wednesday.
"Vivid" gets a 4 star rating.
Arcade Fire
3/5
It's probably the most average album I've ever listened to.
The songs were alright to listen to but it's nothing special.
This album is 1001 Albums apocrypha and is no longer listed in the book.
Only 1 Arcade Fire record is currently on there.
The last song is really good though.
3 stars for "Neon Bible".
Missy Elliott
1/5
This is an absolutely dreadful Missy Elliot exclusive.
The Elliot-Timbaland produced tracks are the worst.
I survived nearly 1 hour of this rubbish.
A few tracks were tolerable like "Pussycat".
The first half is definitely irredeemable.
I'm afraid I have to give "Under Construction" the rare 1 star.
Coldplay
5/5
Now that's more like it.
I'm a huge fan of Coldplay and always will be.
I wouldn't have had a musical epiphany if it weren't for them.
About the album, there's a lot of great songs in it.
"The Scientist" is my favourite track of the record.
5 stars for "A Rush of Blood to the Head", a fantastic album.
DJ Shadow
5/5
DJ Shadow is basically Fatboy Slim but better.
I love the hip-hop beats that populate the album.
The samples are very good.
This is another fantastic electronic album.
I must be really lucky, considering I had 2 great albums in a row.
5 stars for "Endroducing..."
B.B. King
4/5
This is very good for a live album.
The crowd is a bit distracting but it's fine.
B.B. King does a good job here.
"Live at The Regal" is one of the few live albums on this list.
The album slows down near the end.
I'll give it 4 stars.
The Mothers Of Invention
3/5
It's a rather interesting album.
Some of the tracks aren't actually songs.
I like the experimentation by The Mothers of Invention.
Frank Zappa is also good here.
Parts of the album were too weird or boring for me.
3 stars for "We're Only in it for the Money".
The Clash
3/5
This is a good punk album.
The first few songs are great.
I thought this would be much, much worse.
Like with most punk bands, Strummer couldn't sing.
I don't hate punk but the last few tracks were underwhelming.
3 stars for "Self Titled."
The Doors
3/5
There's nothing special in this album.
I liked the synth parts (I almost always like those).
The album itself is quite good.
A few songs were forgettable.
I hope the rest of the Doors' discography is better than is.
I'll give "Morrison Hotel" 3 stars.
ZZ Top
4/5
I liked this album a lot.
The first time I actually listened to ZZ Top.
They weren't a cheesy 80s band after all.
The first half was brilliant.
"Eliminator" is a good introduction to ZZ Top.
I'll give it 4 stars.
Neil Young
4/5
Yet another great album.
I can see why Neil Young has 8 albums on the list.
The beginning was a bit dull.
The second half was a blast.
This album has plenty of hits.
4 stars for "Harvest".
Fleetwood Mac
4/5
"Tusk" is too long but I completed it.
Most of the songs are good.
I would've given it a 5 if it was just 10 of the best songs.
I believe that "Rumours" is better, judging by "Go Your Own Way".
This is the longest album I've reviewed. (I think)
4 stars for "Tusk"
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
3/5
This album is a bit boring.
The first few songs were pretty good.
I thought "Tusk" was long but "AB/TLoO" is 10 mins longer.
I don't consider the album to be awful.
Well, I have to wait until Monday for the next album.
3 stars for "AB/TLoO".
Pink Floyd
5/5
What an awesome way to start this week.
I really loved "DSotM" since the day I first heard it.
Every song is almost perfect.
There is a reason why this album is near universally loved.
It's 46 years since Pink Floyd made this masterpiece and music was changed forever.
I'll give "Dark Side of the Moon" 5 stars.
Fiona Apple
5/5
This heavily reminds me of Portishead's "Dummy".
The songs are great, not one miss.
My favourite song on "Tidal" is "Carrion".
The last few minutes are fantastic.
It looks like this week will be a wonderful musical experience.
I'll give "Tidal" 5 stars.
Gang Starr
4/5
Another great album this week.
I like the lyricism throughout this record.
The production isn't as great as other hip-hop albums.
"Beyond Comprehension" is my favourite track.
Keep the albums rolling, 1001 Albums.
4 stars for "Step in the Arena".
Magazine
3/5
An average post-punk album with some great bits.
"Motorcade" is my favourite track.
Some songs are a bit generic.
The bonus tracks are boring (They don't count).
There's nothing to really write about this album.
3 stars for "Real Life".
Marvin Gaye
4/5
It's a really good album.
But the tracks are a bit too similar to each other.
The title track is my favourite.
I guess sometimes you have to put the best one first.
This is my best week so far.
4 stars for Let's Get it On".
Solomon Burke
3/5
There's nothing interesting about this album.
Some songs were quite boring.
I wouldn't call "Rock 'n Soul" bad though.
"He'll Have to Go" is my favourite track.
The lyrics of that song are quite good.
3 stars for "Rock 'n Soul".
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
2/5
Punk blues must be the worst genre on this site.
The last song has a section that sounds like a harsh noise track that no one likes.
There's a few good bits scattered on the album.
It has the awful kind of experimentation.
This week must be a let down compared to the last one.
I'll give "Now I Got Worry" 2 stars.
Norah Jones
3/5
It's better than yesterday's album.
The music is a bit bland throughout.
But the selling point is Jones' brilliant singing.
If the songs were more energetic, the album would've been a classic.
I don't have a favourite track on this album.
3 stars for "Come Away With Me".
Faust
3/5
It's actually decent.
I expected it to be constant droning noise.
The songs range from good to quite bad.
"Kautrock" is the best track.
I'm surprised by this curiosity.
3 stars for "Faust IV".
Run-D.M.C.
3/5
There's some good songs here.
The famous singles "Tricky" and "Walk This Way" are alright.
The title track is my favourite.
I also liked "You Be Illin", a song that's referenced in the top comment.
A few songs are a let down though.
I'll give "Raising Hell" 3 stars.
The Who
2/5
I expected a better album.
A lot of the songs were quite boring and forgettable.
It's a concept album, probably the first, but Pink Floyd's The Wall did it better.
There's no highlights here for me, not even "Pinball Wizard".
At least it wasn't a total mess.
2 stars for "Tommy".
Suede
2/5
Another dud this week.
Just your average Britpop album you heard 50 times already.
The singles are bland and forgettable.
The only highlight is "Animal Lover".
It was fresh in 1993 but it has since gone off.
2 stars for "Self Titled".
Elis Regina
4/5
This album seems to be really obscure.
There's more notable albums by Elis Regina.
I'm not complaining, "Vento de Maio" is a really good record.
Another classic gem uncovered today.
This is my first album on this list recorded entirely in a foreign language.
I'll give it "Vento de Maio" 4 stars.
Q-Tip
4/5
It's a pretty solid album from one of my favourite rappers.
Q-Tip's production is at its finest.
The album tracks are on par with the singles which is a good sign.
I think the guest stars also did a great job.
I'm surprised this album took 5 years to record.
4 stars for "The Renaissance".
Tears For Fears
3/5
I just hear an average 80s album with almost nothing to make it stand out.
There's a few good songs like "Everybody Wants to Rule the World".
The little details are neat and make me add the "Almost" in my first sentence.
But there are many 80s synth pop groups who are better than Tears for Fears.
I expected a little better from them.
I'll give "Songs From the Big Chair" 3 stars.
Jimi Hendrix
5/5
This album must've been magical in the 60s.
It hasn't lost any of that charm.
The songs are brilliant and innovative.
Music just wouldn't be the same as it is today if it weren't for Hendrix.
It's hard to pick a favourite track.
I'll give "Are You Experienced?" 5 stars.
Fugees
5/5
Another great album this week.
"Ready Or Not" is years ahead of its time.
Lauren Hill definitely steals the show here.
"The Score" made her a star.
The only complaint I would have is that the outros are a bit annoying.
5 stars for "The Score".
Ella Fitzgerald
3/5
The first thing I'll say is that this album is extremely long (3 hours).
I actually like the songs on it.
It's a pity that they sound a bit too similar to each other.
Fitzgerald is a great singer and the tracks written by the Gershwin Brothers are nice.
One piece of advice listening to this record is that you should take a break every 20 songs or so.
3 stars for "EFStGaIGSB".
AC/DC
3/5
It wasn't interesting to me.
Johnson's voice puts me off this album.
The songs were quite good actually.
I think the first track was my favourite.
At least the record wasn't as long as that Ella Fitzgerald album I reviewed yesterday.
I'll give "Back in Black" 3 stars.
Yes
3/5
I quite like this album.
"Roundabout" has been memed to death and a certain section of it feels out of place.
The other songs are alright.
I don't consider "Fragile" groundbreaking unlike a few albums from this period.
It's the only Yes album I've listened to as of now.
I'll give "Fragile" 3 stars.
Iron Maiden
4/5
It reminds me of that time when I got this album on cassette last year.
Unsurprisingly, it broke after the first listening.
Anyway, this album is great with a lot of good songs.
"Run to the Hills" is underrated compared to the title track.
I've now reviewed over 100 albums on this site.
4 stars for " The Number of the Beast".
Kate Bush
2/5
I was a bit disappointed.
This album was messy most of the time.
It does get a bit better near the end.
There's nothing here that I'll replay.
At least Bush can sing and write good lyrics.
2 stars for "The Dreaming".
Radiohead
5/5
I just love Radiohead.
This album just strengthens my opinion.
It didn't bore me at all.
Nearly all of the songs were amazing.
I'm probably biased but I don't care.
5 stars for "In Rainbows".
Scott Walker
3/5
I like this album quite a bit.
Even though I've never heard any of Walker's works.
There's not much difference between the songs.
This week has been mostly mediocre with one great album. (In Rainbows)
I'm afraid there's no highlights on today's album.
3 stars for "Scott 4".
Derek & The Dominos
3/5
An interesting listen to say the least.
"Bell Bottom Blues" is my favourite.
I also like that Pink Floyd-esque guitar solo in one of the songs.
Clapton was good at his job like with many of his projects.
However some of the songs were a bit boring.
3 stars for "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs".
Led Zeppelin
4/5
The first half was really good.
But it lost its magic in the next half.
"Immigrant Song" will always be my favourite off this album.
That was my first Led Zeppelin song.
The last track was a rubbish conclusion.
4 stars for "Self Titled III"
Morrissey
3/5
I absolutely hate Morrissey as a person.
But I like this album a bit more. (He's lucky he has a good band backing him)
The first track was a good opening and "Seasick, Yet Still Docked" is underrated.
Morrissey's vocal range is famously narrow as shown here.
The guitar work and composition by Alan Whyte saves this album.
I have to give 3 stars to "Your Arsenal" on a musical level.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
5/5
I knew this album would be great.
There's hits like the title track and "Three Little Birds".
"Exodus" changed reggae and other genres forever.
Marley was brilliant and so were the Wailers.
I'm glad the album's here on this list.
5 stars for "Exodus".
Blood, Sweat & Tears
2/5
This album was fun at the beginning but it got stale later on.
The jazz parts aren't good and don't help with my listening experience.
I think the vocals are too sparse and overwhelmed by the solos.
"Smiling Phases" was alright and the saving grace of the album.
The final track "Blues Pt. 2" is like an ELP song that's been bogged down.
2 stars for "Self Titled".
Led Zeppelin
4/5
I quite liked this album.
Led Zeppelin's most famous track is here.
"Stairway to Heaven" is really awesome as well as a few other songs.
The second half was average.
This is basically "Stairway to Heaven: The Album".
4 stars for "Untitled".
The White Stripes
4/5
I never really liked "Seven Nation Army".
The other songs are seriously underrated.
This album gives me Beatles vibes.
I especially like the slower tracks.
Remember, always give albums a chance, they might be treasures.
I'll give 4 stars to "Elephant".
Throwing Muses
2/5
I didn't like this album.
It's just ordinary punk without anything new.
There were a very few decent tracks.
You'll always get a dodgy album after a while.
To those looking for this album on YouTube, it's called "In a Doghouse", not "Throwing Muses".
2 stars for "Self Titled".
Anita Baker
3/5
I've heard many songs from this era that sound exactly the same.
This album is no exception.
There's nothing wrong with it, I like it.
Baker does a good job here.
I think this album is decent.
3 stars for "Rapture".
Bob Dylan
3/5
It's been a long time since I reviewed a Bob Dylan album.
That was when I first joined this website.
I like this album a bit better than the last one by Dylan.
Everyone knows that he can write good songs.
Wouldn't the album be greater if there weren't any harmonicas in it?
3 stars for "Bringing it Back Home".
Nirvana
5/5
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" was one of the only songs I ever heard from Nirvana.
It's a bit of a shame that song overshadows Nirvana's other hits.
The whole album is brilliant from start to finish.
Cobain was a one of a kind musician who gave birth to a musical genre.
What a way to finish the week.
5 stars for "Nevermind".
Jimi Hendrix
5/5
Listening to this album was a breeze.
No filler tracks except maybe the intro.
Imagine having two 5 star albums (So far) by the same person.
That's how good Hendrix was.
I hope I have a great week.
I'll give "Axis: Power of Love" 5 stars.
Jimi Hendrix
4/5
Another Jimi Hendrix album today?
That means I've listened to most of his discography
I'm glad I like Hendrix's music.
The songs are great but a couple of them are a bit too long.
Doesn't mean that the album was bad at all.
4 stars for "Electric Ladyland".
R.E.M.
3/5
It's a solid first effort from R.E.M.
"Radio Free Europe" was a fun opener.
Here, R.E.M begun their journey.
A few albums later, they improved their sound.
But this album sounds like other albums from its time.
3 stars for "Murmur".
Mudhoney
2/5
I listened to it today at an earlier time than usual.
The vocals are terrible and annoy me to death.
At least the proto-grunge riffs are decent.
Better yet, the EP is only 22 minutes long.
It would get a worse rating if it was longer.
2 stars for "Superfuzz Bigmuff".
Aretha Franklin
3/5
It's a decent album I like.
"Respect" is alright but not the best song like the Rolling Stone says it is.
The other tracks are similar and remind me of "Great Gig in the Sky" but with lyrics.
Franklin did a great performance on this album.
I can't wait until the next album I'll review.
3 stars for "INLaMtWILY".
The Police
2/5
"Walking on the Moon" is great.
It's a classic that's better than "Message in a Bottle".
The other songs are ok to boring.
I honestly think the Police are overrated.
Sting's voice is annoying sometimes.
I'll give "Regatta de Blanc" 2 stars.
Pantera
4/5
The riffs on this album by Dimebag Darrel are awesome.
I had to begin my review with that.
Pantera's early albums sucked so when "Cowboys From Hell" and this album came out, it was a godsend.
I loved nearly all the tracks.
But it did get a bit monotonous by the end.
4 stars for "Vulgar Display of Power".
Dire Straits
3/5
I like a bit of Dire Straits every now and again.
Unfortunately, my favourite DS track is not on this album.
The songs are good, "Sultans of Swing" is a nice single.
Dire Straits would be awful without Knopfler's guitar solos.
That's what I think of this album.
3 stars for "Self Titled".
Kings of Leon
3/5
I find the lead singer's voice insufferable.
The singles are good, "Use Somebody" is my favourite.
"Closer" is a good opener.
When the second half of the album comes on, the quality drops significantly.
So I have mixed feelings towards this album.
3 stars for "Only By the Night".
Bob Dylan
3/5
It was alright, nothing too thrilling.
Dylan's songwriting always outdoes his voice.
"Like a Rolling Stone" is on the album.
I don't get why it's on the list other than it being by Bob Dylan.
Only 4 more albums by him to go...
I'll give "Highway 61 Revisited" 3 stars.
Otis Redding
3/5
I really like Redding's singing here.
The songs are a bit bland.
The original tracks are the best.
Another album I discovered this year.
All thanks to this list.
3 stars for "Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul".
Doves
3/5
A nice surprise for me.
How come I haven't heard of Doves before?
"Here It Comes" reminds me of "Glory Box" by Portishead.
Some tracks are really good.
The main problem with the album is that it gets boring sometimes.
3 stars for "Lost Souls".
Mott The Hoople
3/5
An average album by a band I only know from one song.
It's better than I expected.
The songs vary in quality, some bad and some quite decent.
So far, I had an okay week of reviews this time.
I want something amazing tomorrow.
I'll give 3 stars to "Mott".
Genesis
3/5
I don't know how to feel about this album.
This is before Phil Collins became the full time singer for Genesis.
He does have a song here.
I was a bit bored during my listening session.
But I liked the sound of this album.
3 stars for "Selling England By the Pound".
The Clash
3/5
I liked this album quite a bit.
Even though I expected more from the Clash.
Not saying this album is bad at all.
Haven't had a single classic album (in my eyes) this week.
I hope next week will be awesome.
3 stars for "London Calling".
The Rolling Stones
3/5
I'm a bit ill to enjoy the album fully today.
Because of that, I didn't feel like listening.
There's some songs I really like.
Nothing significant to me here.
I wasn't bored halfway through and that's a bonus.
3 stars for "Exile On Main St".
Christina Aguilera
2/5
I didn't like this album much.
Most of the songs are the same electro-jazz pop drivel.
I get that Aguilera can sing but this album is just like her other records.
The good news is that the last few tracks are quite good.
But it's not enough to satisfy me.
I'll give "Back to Basics" 2 stars.
Bee Gees
2/5
I find it very unoriginal to say the least.
One track has one of the Gibb brothers emulating Paul McCartney.
This album is nothing like the Bee Gees' later stuff.
But it's not absolutely dreadful like a few albums I've heard.
Looks like I'll forget this record within a month.
2 stars for "Odessa".
Julian Cope
3/5
I quite liked this album.
A lot of interesting songs to hear.
"Safesurfer" has to be my favourite track.
But there isn't anything on this album close to that song.
I guess it's better than the last two albums I've reviewed.
3 stars for "Peggy Suicide".
Marvin Gaye
3/5
I preferred Mavin Gaye's other album I reviewed a while ago.
But I still like this one.
The first two tracks were great and the others are nice.
It's been a fortnight since I gave an album more than 3 stars.
So I can't to see what Monday brings.
3 stars for "What's Going On?".
Pulp
4/5
I really enjoyed this album.
"Common People" and "Disco 2000" are the best tracks.
Probably the best Britpop album that isn't by Oasis.
I quite liked the non-singles.
It took 2 weeks to review an album that gets more than a 3.
4 stars for "Different Class".
Talking Heads
4/5
Another great album today.
The songs were quite energetic and didn't make me bored.
"Psycho Killer", the big single, was good.
Byrne isn't much of a singer but that doesn't matter.
At least I can hear the lyrics, unlike some other albums of "77"'s type.
4 stars for "Talking Heads: 77".
Queen
5/5
The hits just keep on coming this week.
I loved this album a lot as a Queen fan.
This was released before they became an established name in rock.
Nearly all of the songs were great.
That's all I have to say for now.
I'll give "Self Titled II" 5 stars
Ms. Dynamite
4/5
Another great album from the list.
I've heard Ms. Dynamite from a song in 2020.
That was when I knew she was good.
The first 6 songs were fantastic and others were quite good as well.
All these good albums this week are a blessing.
4 stars for "A Little Deeper".
The Cure
5/5
Another really, really fantastic album.
"Disintegration" wasn't an overrated record like I thought it was.
It turns out that I love goth rock a lot.
"Plainsong" and "Homesick" are my favourites.
You probably couldn't tell if a track's a single or not, the album's that good.
5 stars for "Disintegration".
Nick Drake
4/5
At last, I got this album.
"Place to Be" is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.
I first heard it on BBC Radio 6 one morning.
It's simply just one hell of a song.
Anyway, the other tracks are good as well, just not on "PtB"s level.
4 stars for "Pink Moon".
Adele
3/5
I like some of Adele's work.
My favourite of her's being "Skyfall" but that song isn't on "21".
I think "Rolling in the Deep" and "Set Fire to the Rain" are the best tracks.
The other songs weren't memorable or interesting.
In conclusion, this album is alright but a bit bland.
I'll give "21" 3 stars.
Fats Domino
2/5
Nothing interesting to see here.
I get that Fats Domino is considered a legend by many.
But this album isn't as good as I expected it to be.
And it's also less than 30 mins long.
There's better rock n' roll artists out there.
2 stars for "This is Fats Domino".
Leonard Cohen
4/5
This album was really nice to listen to.
"Suzanne" is the best song.
Cohen had a lot of talents, singing and songwriting are two of them.
The album could've done with a bit of variety.
That, along with being a bit boring, is what prevents this album from being legendary.
4 stars for "songs of Leonard Cohen".
Moby
4/5
I was pleasantly surprised by this album.
But I have to admit the first song was a bit disappointing.
The rock-style songs are the best.
"Play" also has the song everyone knows: "Porcelain".
I believe this album is peak Moby.
4 stars for "Play".
Garbage
4/5
"Garbage" is an ironic name for this album and the band itself.
I enjoyed most of the songs to a high degree.
"Vow" is probably the best one. (very underrated)
All tracks after "Stupid Girl" are dull in comparison to the songs that came before.
But that doesn't stop this album from being great.
4 stars for "Self Titled".
Sly & The Family Stone
3/5
I liked this pretty good album.
The early use of drum machines is a bonus.
"Family Affair" is the best song there.
Some of the album tracks were forgettable but not bad.
The title track lasts 4 seconds and is silent.
3 stars for "There's a Riot Goin' On".
Burning Spear
3/5
I had mixed feelings towards this album.
The style was quite good and songs were ok.
But the tracks get monotonous towards the end.
I've never heard of Burning Spear before.
Another interesting listening experience.
I'll give "Marcus Garvey" 3 stars.
SZA
2/5
I didn't really like that album.
SZA can sing but it's not enough to impress me.
The instrumentals were fine as well.
The tracks are the type of song that gets radio play every hour.
And I don't mean it in a good way.
2 stars for "Ctrl".
Songhoy Blues
4/5
I really liked this album a lot.
Songhoy Blues' sound is quite unique to me.
The songs were some nice blues rock.
This was the first time I've ever heard Malian music and I'm glad I did.
How this album came to be is an interesting read itself.
4 stars for "Music in Exile".
Bob Marley & The Wailers
3/5
Another good Bob Marley album.
Although not as good as "Exodus".
"Talkin' Blues" is the best track here.
Nothing special by today's standards.
That's all I have to say today.
3 stars for "Natty Dread".
Ian Dury
3/5
I was a bit disappointed today.
Expected some kind of masterpiece.
A few songs were annoying to listen to.
The album isn't bad though, just not as good I anticipated.
I'm now 1 album closer to the end of the list.
3 stars for "New Boots and Panties!!".
The Monkees
2/5
Why are the Monkees on this list?
They are a poor man's Beatles.
The songs on this album are mostly terrible.
"Shades of Grey" is the only good song here.
I guess this is the worst album I had in a while.
2 stars for "Headquarters".
Haircut 100
2/5
It feels like I've listened to this album many times already.
I was bored to death by the songs.
No highlights to be heard anywhere.
At least it wasn't horrifically bad.
The album was *slightly* better than "Headquarters" by the Monkees.
2 stars for "Pelican West".
2/5
I was a bit disappointed by this album.
Maybe I wasn't in the mood to listen to "Arthur".
That happens to me occasionally.
One good thing is that the Kinks weren't trying to imitate the Beatles.
This must be the third concept album from 1969 I didn't like.
2 stars for "Arthur".
Beatles
5/5
"Abbey Road" is still awesome after listening to it many times.
An absolute blast compared to the last album I reviewed.
Almost every minute of it is a masterpiece.
"I Want You" and "Come Together" are my favourites.
I think "Let It Be" wasn't great so I say "Abbey Road" is the Beatles' true final album.
I'll give "Abbey Road" no less than 5 stars.
Destiny's Child
2/5
I got what I expected: a dated pop album.
Lost count of how many records from the era sound like "Survivor".
I admit that the title track is a good song.
A few others are just standard 2000s singles.
"Survivor" started Beyonce's career for better or for worse.
2 stars for "Survivor".
Boston
3/5
Not as bad as I thought.
"More Than a Feeling" is still cheesy though.
My favourite songs are "Peace of Mind" and Let Me Take You Home Tonight".
I can now see why people like this album so much.
Until today, I didn't know that the UFOs on the cover were guitar shaped.
3 stars for "Self Titled".
Guided By Voices
3/5
There's one amazing song on this album.
It's called "Game of Pricks" and it outshines the other tracks.
The songs before it were a bit boring.
It did get quite better afterwards but not to the same level as "Game of Pricks".
I also loved "Alright" at the end of the album.
I'll give "Alien Lanes" 3 stars.
Pink Floyd
4/5
I liked this album a lot.
This the 4th album of Pink Floyd's I've listened to.
Not as good as "DSotM" though, that one is unbeatable.
"Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is incredible and never gets dull.
The other songs aren't filler at all.
4 stars for "Wish You Were Here".
Paul Simon
3/5
I thought Simon's work as one half of Simon & Garfunkel was great.
But his solo work is lacking the charm "Bridge Over Troubled Water" had.
I liked some of songs at the beginning of "Self Titled".
The later songs were ok for the time.
Solo albums tend to suck but Simon avoided that.
3 stars for "Self Titled".
The Last Shadow Puppets
3/5
Most of the album's songs sounds very similar to each other
That isn't exactly a good thing.
The album was great to begin with, a better sound that I expected.
Alex Turner from the Arctic Monkeys is featured.
There's nothing else to say about this album.
3 stars for "The Age of the Understatement".
XTC
3/5
Another uninteresting album today.
XTC did a great song once called "We're Making Plans for Nigel".
But that song isn't on "Skylarker".
The first 5 songs gave me hope that it's gonna be great.
More tracks later, that hope was crushed.
I'll give "Skylarker" 3 stars.
Shack
2/5
Just another run of the mill Britpop album.
Of course the music magazines ate it up.
One song is The Verve's "Sonnet" with some Oasis mixed in.
"H.M.S. Fable" was outdated when it released in 1999.
The year when many new, exciting and better albums were made.
2 stars for "H.M.S. Fable".
Carole King
4/5
Another album I really liked.
The first few songs were the best.
"Tapestry" has aged incredibly well over 53 years.
Way better than "H.M.S Fable" by Shack.
I reviewed that album a few days ago.
4 stars for "Tapestry".
Meat Loaf
3/5
The title track is an all time classic.
But I don't think the rest of the album is though.
"Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" is also a nice single.
There's a good live intro that's not on the album.
Shame it didn't make it on there.
3 stars for "Bat Out of Hell".
Pavement
4/5
One of my favourite lo-fi bands.
Not the "Chill Beats to Relax To" kind.
This is my second time listening to this album in full.
I liked it as much as I did the first time.
"Loretta's Scars" is my favourite song on the album.
4 stars for "Slanted and Enchanted".
Sarah Vaughan
3/5
This album has one of the best opening songs ever.
It just blew me away by how good it was for 1957.
Better yet, this is a live album.
Unfortunately, the other songs don't stand a chance to the aforementioned first track.
Vaughan saves those tracks from being garbage.
3 stars for "At Mister Kelly's".
Miles Davis
4/5
A jazz album that's not too long and doesn't get boring.
Made in the same year as many other classics.
Some jazz records can be monotonous after a few minutes.
But Davis avoided that as there's many instruments on "In a Silent Way".
In other words, I liked this album.
4 stars for "In a Silent Way".
5/5
Another one of my all time favourites.
Every song is great in their own way.
A lot of albums since 1967 wanted to be like "Sgt. Pepper".
Most of them being failures in comparison.
Nobody can beat the Beatles and I can say that with pride.
5 stars for "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band".
Kendrick Lamar
5/5
Kendrick Lamar got robbed when Macklemore won a Grammy over Kendrick's own album.
Even Macklemore himself said "Good Kid, M.A.A.D City" should have won the award.
This album is the best 2010s rap album I've ever heard.
I just love it so much that I got the hype surrounding it.
Hope I get "To Pimp a Butterfly Next".
5 stars for "Good Kid, M.A.A.D City".
Gene Clark
4/5
A hidden gem that's 50 years old.
It didn't deserve the hate it had back then.
"No Other" was ahead of its time with its then unique sound.
It could've have everywhere on the radio and beyond.
However, to me, the album has lost a bit of its sparkle since 1974.
4 stars for "No Other".
Ladysmith Black Mambazo
3/5
I was blindsided when I heard the first song.
Usually not a fan of accapela songs.
Instruments are one half of a great song most of the time.
I got used to it later on in the album.
Turned out the album was pretty good.
3 stars for "Shaka Zulu".
Stereolab
3/5
There's nothing interesting about this album.
I think it's overrated compared to other electronic albums.
At least I liked it quite a bit.
The synths makes it a more tolerable listen.
I just like synths an awful lot.
3 stars for "Emperor Tomato Ketchup".
Led Zeppelin
3/5
The weakest of the "Self Titled" quadrilogy.
None of the songs had any significant impact on me.
I think this album could've done without "Moby Dick".
"II" is a good album but not compared to other classics.
Tomorrow starts another week of reviewing.
I'll give "Self Titled II" 3 stars.
Sly & The Family Stone
3/5
I enjoyed this album quite a bit.
It's very similar to Sly's other record on the list.
It also happens to be just as good.
"Sex Machine" went on for a bit too long.
That's all for today.
3 stars for "Stand!".
Big Star
2/5
I was quite disappointed by this album.
Never even heard of Big Star.
The first song was garbage.
A few gems saves this album from being a total disaster.
Looks like I’ll be forgetting this album.
2 stars for “Third/Sister Lovers”.
Queen
5/5
Much better than the last album I had.
There's many great songs known and less known.
My favourite is "Good Company".
The ones sung by Brian May are underrated.
Everyone knows "Bohemian Rhapsody", even those without taste.
5 stars for "A Night at the Opera".
Khaled
3/5
Not to be confused with the other Khaled or DJ Khaled.
"Kenza"'s Khaled is better than the latter.
"Leilli" is the best song on this album.
The biggest problem with "Kenza" is that it's too long.
It should've had 5 songs less.
3 stars for "Kenza".
The Prodigy
5/5
The Prodigy's best album in my opinion.
That was when they reinvented rave music.
Rock and breakbeat are a perfect combination.
My favourite song here is "Diesel Power".
I can't get enough of this album.
5 stars for "The Fat of the Land".
Van Halen
3/5
It’s an alright album.
A bit too short for a rock record.
I liked Van Halen ‘s guitar work.
But I’ve already listened to many albums like this.
If I had listened to it earlier, I would’ve enjoyed it more.
3 stars for “Self Titled”.
Alice In Chains
3/5
Another standard rock album.
A bit less heavier than I imagined.
"Junkhead" is my favourite on "Dirt".
Tom Araya sounds a bit too similar to James Hetfield.
Other than that, this album is pretty good.
3 stars for "Dirt".
Miles Davis
3/5
It's actually quite good.
"Pharaoh's Dance" is my favourite off "Bitches Brew".
The one problem with this album is that it's too long.
Jazz albums tend to do my head in if it's over an hour in length.
But this album is still cool nevertheless.
I'll give "Bitches Brew" 3 stars.
New Order
2/5
I expected better from New Order.
Especially with singles like "Blue Monday" and "True Faith".
At least this album sounds good.
"Run" and "Vanishing Point" are great in my opinion.
Speaking of "True Faith", how come "Substance" didn't make it on the list?
2 stars for "Technique".
Michael Jackson
2/5
This album is alright, a bit dated and cheesy today.
It reeks of the simultaneously great and terrible 80s.
Unfortunately, this album is closer to the terrible side.
"Dirty Diana" was my favourite off "Bad".
The few decent tracks don't save this album.
2 stars for "Bad".
James Brown
3/5
Another live album I liked.
Sometimes you get terrible live performances.
I'm glad this one wasn't one of those.
Brown gave his all through this concert.
However, the songs could have been better.
3 stars for "James Brown Live at the Apollo"
Joy Division
3/5
"Disorder" is one of my favourite songs of all time.
That makes this album a hit.
"New Dawn Fades" and "Interzone" are good songs as well.
It's a shame that the rest of "Unknown Pleasures" wasn't as great as "Disorder".
Would've been an all time classic for sure.
Looks like I'll have to give "Unknown Pleasures" a 3 star rating.
Tracy Chapman
4/5
I was a bit reluctant to review this album as my dog had died today.
That meant I wasn't in the mood to listen at all.
"Fast Car" is a banger and always will be.
Some other songs were great as well.
Better than a few other albums I reviewed in the last few days.
4 stars for "Self Titled".
SAULT
4/5
One of the more political albums I've heard.
That doesn't make it bad though as it's quite good.
I liked the synths that populate "Untitled".
The lyrics are a bit repetitive and the spoken word interludes don't contribute much to the album.
"Eternal Life" is the best song of the record.
4 stars for "Untitled (Black Is)".
Radiohead
4/5
I forgot to write this review, I was an "Amnesiac".
I know this album divided fellow reviewers due to its absurdity.
But I really liked it as a Radiohead fan.
"You and Whose Army and "Pyramid Song" are my favourites.
"Two Bears" should've been a B-Side.
4 stars for "Amnesiac"
Keith Jarrett
3/5
This is an impressive album, given the circumstances of its recording.
Jarrett only had a broken piano during the concert.
The tracks were a bit long in my opinion.
A few sections were boring.
But I'm still pleased by this live album.
3 stars for "The Köln Concert".
Manic Street Preachers
2/5
It started out strong but fizzled out by the end.
"Yes" is amazing and should've been a single.
I expected a lot better from this album.
It was just monotonous and I couldn't catch the lyrics.
Can't wait until my next album on the list.
2 stars for "The Holy Bible".
Roxy Music
3/5
Actually good for a glam rock album.
I expected it to be cheesy.
But it's actually quite good.
My favourite song from "For Your Pleasure" is "IEDHAH"
However, there's better albums out there.
3 stars for "For Your Pleasure".
Germs
3/5
It's becoming harder for me to write these reviews.
I'm running out of ideas of what to write.
Anyway, this album isn't as bad as others say.
I quite like the hardcore sound.
What a shame that this is the only album by Germs.
3 stars for "GI".
Beck
4/5
I'm reaching 200 albums this week.
That's a great achievement.
"Sea Change" was a brilliant album.
I loved the first half of it.
Before listening to this album, the only song by Beck I heard was "Loser".
4 stars for "Sea Change."
Dolly Parton
4/5
A better album than I expected.
I thought Parton was overrated.
Turns out I was wrong, again.
The title track is really good.
There's a few other songs I liked.
4 stars for "Coat of Many Colours".
Jeff Buckley
3/5
Just an average album to me.
It's not as good as the last two albums I reviewed.
Some songs were quite good.
"Grace" is one of those albums that had no impact on my mind.
So I might forget it within a week.
3 stars for "Grace".
Public Enemy
4/5
It's better than the last Public Enemy album I reviewed.
The intro and the song after it were fantastic.
I liked the beats in this album and the lyrics too.
Soon, I'll be listening to "Fight the Power", the best Public Enemy song.
Friday will be the day I'll hear my 200th album.
4 stars for "ITaNoMtHUB"
Goldfrapp
3/5
This is my 200th album.
What a big milestone for me.
The album itself was alright, not too bad.
It reminded me of Coldplay's "Ghost Stories".
Looks like I'll be getting more interesting albums from now on.
3 stars for "Seventh Tree".
AC/DC
4/5
The last album before Scott's death.
After that, AC/DC took a plunge.
There's some really good songs on this album.
The final track is very underrated.
I also liked the title track as well.
4 stars for "Highway to Hell".
Massive Attack
5/5
I love trip-hop, one of the best electronic subgenres.
"Blue Lines" happens to be one of the best in that genre.
It's got classics like "Safe From Harm" and "Unfinished Symphony".
Don't forget the talents of everyone involved with this album.
Hopefully, I'll get "Mezzanine" soon.
5 stars for "Blue Lines".
The Stone Roses
4/5
I didn't like "I Wanna Be Adored" that much.
But the rest of the album is pure gold.
Many of the songs are cool and timeless.
"Waterfall" is best one of the lot.
Looks like this week is a good week so far.
4 stars for "Self Titled".
Paul Simon
2/5
Everyone knows that the solo careers of Simon & (maybe) Garfunkel were underwhelming.
This album by Simon proves that.
I can understand why people might like it though.
"Hearts and Bones" was almost a Simon & Garfunkel album but it wasn't.
That was one of music's greatest disappointments. (Thanks, Paul)
2 stars for "Hearts and Bones".
Marvin Gaye
2/5
A disappointment compared to other albums by Marvin Gaye.
One reason is that "Here, My Dear" is too long.
It could've been 45 minutes long and it might've had a better rating.
The songs on this album just don't stand out at all.
At least they're nice tunes but they're boring.
2 stars for "Here, My Dear".
Nick Drake
3/5
I was a bit disappointed by this album; it's supposed to be a cult classic.
None of the songs compare to "Place to Be" on "Pink Moon".
Drake's (not the rapper's) singing is good, as always; "Five Leaves Left" is nice background music.
That's one good thing about the album.
Meanwhile, I have discovered the band Disorder's music; I recommend it to all hardcore punk fans.
3 stars for "Five Leaves Left".
Talking Heads
2/5
I'm getting the feeling that I don't enjoy the Talking Heads.
Their music is just banal to me.
I do admit it's a bit funky sometimes.
"The Overload" is the best song; the whole album should've been like that.
In other news, I've been discovering new and better music.
2 stars for "Remain In Light".
Dexys Midnight Runners
1/5
I hated this album a lot.
It shouldn't have been conceived.
All songs on this album are on varying levels of bad.
I can't believe I had to listen to "SftYSR" last night.
This week has been catastrophic.
I'll give "Searching for the Young Soul Rebels" a rare 1 star rating.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
4/5
That's more like it.
Unlike the last album I reviewed, it's an album I enjoyed.
There are classics like "Bad Moon Rising" on "Green River".
This is the album with most of CCR's hits.
Even the two bonus tracks are good.
4 stars for "Green River".
Nick Drake
4/5
I just had a Nick Drake album last week.
This album is the best of his.
I think the backing band helps a lot.
I've now listened to all of Nick Drake's albums.
He died after 3 records, what a shame.
4 stars for "Bryter Layter".
Eminem
5/5
It's one of the more controversial albums on this list.
I can see why some people hate it.
However, I'm one of the fans of this album.
Eminem's lyrical ability never disappoints me (apart from one moment after 2004).
I also have no doubt that "Kim" is the most disturbing song on the whole 1001 album-long list.
5 stars for "The Marshall Mathers LP".
Wu-Tang Clan
4/5
"Bring Da Ruckus" has to be the best opening track in 90s rap.
The production is always brilliant, as it's Wu-Tang.
I also really like RZA's verses, which are probably my favourite parts.
The super-long interludes prevent "36 Chambers" from being a complete classic.
But there aren't too many of those.
4 stars for "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)"
Morrissey
2/5
I listened to this album on Christmas Eve.
It was alright by Morrissey standards.
The songs were just average late 80s tunes.
I honestly think that there are too many Morrissey albums on this list.
Two Smiths albums and maybe one of his solo albums is enough.
2 stars for "Viva Hate".
Various Artists
2/5
Just a bunch of Christmas songs.
I listened to it on Christmas Day.
This album wasn't one of the highlights of that day.
This record is only on this list because it featured the pioneering "wall of sound" technique.
Otherwise, it would just be an album with songs played on the radio every December.
2 stars for "A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector".
Jeru The Damaja
4/5
It's a really good album I liked.
A nice Boxing Day surprise.
The skits aren't obnoxious, unlike a few rap albums.
I liked every song on the album.
This album is proof that East Coast rap outshines the West Coast by a mile.
4 stars for "The Sun Rises in the East".
Sigur Rós
4/5
I love this album a lot; I only listened to it once.
"Svefn-g-Engler" is magical beyond most other songs.
It's unbelievable that it was made in 1999.
The other tracks have a similar feel.
I don't know a single word of Icelandic, but it was still mesmerising.
4 stars for "Ágætis Byrjun".
The Kinks
4/5
I didn't expect this album to be that good.
It's an improvement to the last Kinks album I reviewed.
The title track, in particular, is great.
All of the songs are well-written.
I'm getting some really cool albums this time.
4 stars for "The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society".
Ride
3/5
It wasn't the My Bloody Valentine-style album I was expecting.
"Nowhere" was just a bunch of average rock songs.
I theoretically could've loved this album.
Somehow, I didn't enjoy "Nowhere" too much.
The sound was still good though
3 stars for "Nowhere".
Madonna
Paul Weller
2/5
Most of the songs were bad.
I thought Paul Weller was better than this.
Why did I think "Wild Wood" would be a good album?
Looks like I'll be forgetting this album.
"Sunflower" is actually quite good though.
2 stars for "Wild Wood".
Creedence Clearwater Revival
3/5
It wasn't as good as the last album by CCR I reviewed.
There were no original tracks I could recognise.
The songs were better than Paul Weller's "Wild Woods".
"Cosmo's Factory" is a brilliant title for an album.
It's nearly been a year since I started reviewing albums.
3 stars for "Cosmo's Factory".
Nirvana
4/5
At least I got a good album today.
The songs were all great, no duds.
Not good enough for a 5 star rating, but still awesome.
It's a shame that "In Utero" is Nirvana's last album.
I'm still yet to listen to "Bleach".
4 stars for "In Utero".
MC Solaar
4/5
This album contains my favourite kind of rap.
The kind with good flows and beats.
Better yet, no skits at all.
I wish I understood French; it would've made the album even better.
The only dud on "Tempo" is "Ragga Jam," which shouldn't have been on the album.
4 stars for "Qui Sème le Vent Récolte le Tempo".
Kid Rock
2/5
Why did it have to be Kid Rock?
That guy's a complete jerk.
This album isn't much better; it's just Limp Bizkit but worse.
There are 2 good songs: "Only God Knows Why" (slightly ruined by autotune) and "Black Girl, White Guy" (tells an actual story)".
I also liked Eminem's guest appearance.
2 stars for "Devil Without a Cause".
Les Rythmes Digitales
1/5
This was a very painful album to listen to.
Now I've got a headache; the cringy album cover isn't helping.
Remember Daft Punk's "Homework", an album with long and repetitive songs?
Well, "Darkdancer" is that, but without the good, funky beats (and shorter).
There was a glimmer of decent music by the end.
1 star for "Darkdancer".
Ramones
3/5
This was the beginning of punk.
Many good albums have been since then.
"Self-Titled" has two notable songs: "Blitzkrieg Bop" and one I have been looking for a long time.
I'm glad I found the latter.
"I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" is the song of this album.
3 stars for "Self Titled"
Cocteau Twins
3/5
It wasn't as dreamy as I expected.
There weren't many shoegaze elements in it.
The songs on "Heaven or Las Vegas" are average.
I do love "Cherry-Coloured Funk" though.
The album's title is also fantastic.
3 stars for "Heaven or Las Vegas".
The Mamas & The Papas
3/5
This album was alright and was pretty good for its time.
"California Dreamin'" is a classic as always.
There's not a lot to the Mamas & the Papas other than "IYCBYE&E".
Half of the songs were just generic '60s stuff.
Next album please...
3 stars for "IYCBYE&E".
Joni Mitchell
3/5
It's not as good as "Blue".
"Court and Spark" is a bit too mellow for me.
There are some good songs on that album.
"Raised On Robbery" is my favourite on "Court and Spark".
I've also been getting into more experimental music recently.
3 stars for "Court and Spark".
Kings of Leon
4/5
What a stunning debut!
I rarely use exclamation marks in my reviews.
The first track is a classic.
It is such a shame that "Only by the Night" wasn't as good as "Youth and Young Manhood".
The latter album has a great hidden track at the end, a very rare phenomenon.
4 stars for "Youth and Young Manhood".
Pixies
4/5
It's another good album this week.
I liked it even more on the second listen.
Every song is alright at its worst and amazing at its best.
"Surfer Rosa" was beyond its time.
Remember, there's more to the Pixies than just "Where is My Mind?"
4 stars for "Surfer Rosa".
David Bowie
3/5
It's not a masterpiece, but it's alright; better than most of Bowie's earlier input.
By masterpiece, I mean "DSotM" levels of greatness.
"Hunky Dory" has "Life On Mars" and other classics on the A-side.
The B-side is disappointing in comparison.
By the way, I preferred "ZSatSFM".
3 stars for "Hunky Dory".
The Pretty Things
3/5
This is apparently the first rock opera.
Psychedelic rock contributed more to metal than other rock subgenres.
Just wanted to say that here (I don't have much to write about).
The title track was a good opening.
Most of the songs were ok.
3 stars for "S.F Sorrow".
Serge Gainsbourg
2/5
Some albums are better off without lyrics.
Who knew such a controversial album could be on the list?
That comes from a guy who liked "MMLP".
It could be argued that "History de Melody Nelson" is an attempt at shock value or something, but Serge Gainsbourg made a song called "Lemon Incest," making this less likely.
The background music prevents this album from getting a single star.
2 stars for "Histoire de Melody Nelson".
Gene Clark
2/5
At least the subject matter's more savoury than the last album I reviewed.
I ain't going near any of Serge Gainsbourg's work again.
Unfortunately, "White Light" is quite dull.
None of the songs were memorable; they sounded nice at least.
I guess I had a bad week this time.
2 stars for "White Light".
Iggy Pop
3/5
I just had a bad week this time.
Nearly all the albums were below 4 stars.
"Lust For Life" is one of those records.
There are some good songs in this album.
"Fall in Love With Me" is my favourite.
3 stars for "Lust For Life".
Red Hot Chili Peppers
4/5
Not to be confused with the Red Hot Chilli Pipers.
The Red Hot Chilli Peppers did a good job on this album.
The singles are excellent, especially the title track.
I remember the music video for the latter well.
"I Like Dirt" is the worst of the album.
4 stars for "Californication".
Waylon Jennings
4/5
This album is way better than today's country music.
Jennings seems to have had one of the best singing voices in country music's history.
"Honky Tonk Heroes" has many good songs; I'll say all of them are!
It's a classic in just less than 30 minutes.
This album and "Californication" are a relief after a wave of awful albums.
4 stars for "Honky Tonk Heroes".
3/5
Everyone knows that Fred Durst is a douche.
He doesn't have the best voice in nu-metal.
Fun fact: When Staind was an unknown band (also when they were fantastic), Durst was offended by the cover of their first album "Tormented".
He thought Staind were Satanists, so Durst almost stopped them from performing.
Well, imagine if Durst had seen any of Cannibal Corpse's album art; he might have died.
The songs "Rollin'" and "My Way" are bangers.
The other songs are alright but not as bad as others said.
My review is longer than usual because I wanted to share that story about Durst and Stained.
3 stars for "CSatHDFW".
The Smiths
3/5
According to The Smiths, "Meat is Murder".
Listening to Morrisey's rants is also murder to listen to.
This album is quite good though.
Morrisey himself is an alright singer, but not great.
The rest of the band does a fine job.
3 stars for "The Queen is Dead".
Duran Duran
4/5
It's the best 80s pop album I've heard so far.
That particular era had some awful tunes.
Not as bad as some songs today though.
I always thought Duran Duran were the kings of cheesy.
The title track alone debunks that misconception.
4 stars for "Rio".
The Strokes
4/5
I was waiting for this album to be recommended to me.
"Is This It?" is considered a classic by many alt-rock fans.
Among them is myself, a first-time listener.
I have listened to "Someday", which is a good song.
This week has started well.
4 stars for "Is This It?".
T. Rex
3/5
I liked this album.
I didn't know it was on the list.
"The Slider" was the beginning of glam rock.
There wasn't any song I could call a favourite.
Sorry, I couldn't think about what to write.
3 stars for "The Slider".
4/5
What an interesting album title.
The songs are really cool after 54 years.
They're very innovative for a 70s album.
"Mr. Skin" and "Nature's Way" are my favourites.
I hope I get more musicians like Spirit.
4 stars for "Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus".
The Youngbloods
3/5
An album I had no idea existed.
The Youngbloods' biggest hit isn't on "Elephant Mountain".
The jazz sections weren't that good.
I don't get why "Elephant Mountain" is on this list.
At least half the songs were rather cool.
3 stars for "Elephant Mountain".
Al Green
4/5
A stunning conclusion to this week.
All albums since Monday are from the 70s or earlier.
Albums named after the first and most popular song on it tend to suck.
But "Let's Stay Together" is a great treat.
Here's to a great week of music.
4 stars for "Let's Stay Together".
Hugh Masekela
4/5
The first song was one of the best jazz tracks I've ever heard.
I thought I was done with jazz.
Many good tracks soon follow suit.
"Home is Where the Music Is" is a brilliant name for an album.
I didn't know what a flugelhorn was until I heard this record.
4 stars for "Home is Where the Music Is".
Traffic
3/5
I've decided to take a break from reviewing albums, which will end on Monday.
I can't think about what to write.
Sometimes, I have nothing to say.
"Self Titled" is a good album, in my opinion.
Not the best, though.
3 stars for "Self Titled".
Suzanne Vega
3/5
I'm back again after a short break!
The first thing is that this album is relaxing to listen to.
It's also not too long, to the point of being boring.
Best of all, "Self Titled" isn't dated and cheesy.
"Neighbourhood Girls" is a good conclusion to a nice album.
3 stars for "Self Titled".
Don McLean
4/5
I've listened to this kind of album at least 10 times on this list alone.
This gets a bit tiresome, to be frank.
This album is one of the better ones in the singer-songwriter genre.
"American Pie" has the famous title track and a few other gems.
The songwriting by McLean makes me jealous in a good way.
4 stars for "American Pie".
Orbital
3/5
This album has a poor reception on this website.
I can see why some people might hate it; repetition is everywhere on "Self-Titled".
"Self-Titled" is a nice electronic record; the outro is uncalled for, though.
There are some good beats here and there.
To be honest, I prefer Underworld to Orbital.
3 stars for "Self-Titled".
Soft Cell
3/5
It's a bit better than I was expecting
I believe "Non-Stop Erotic Cabanet" is Patient Zero of the 80s synth pop craze that populates this list.
"Sex Dwarf" is an underrated song that sadly couldn't be a single.
A few of the tracks are just dated and stale.
Fun fact: I didn't know "Tainted Love" was a cover until today.
3 stars for "Non-Stop Erotic Cabanet".
Stan Getz
2/5
It's a decent jazz album to end the week.
I liked the two singles.
However, I've heard better jazz albums before.
Also, I'm not too keen on bossa nova.
All of the songs are nearly the exact same.
2 stars for "Getz/Gilberto".
Louis Prima
3/5
It's one of the oldest albums on the list.
"The Wildest!" is quite mild, contrary to its title.
The backing track is OK, nothing too special.
I probably would've given a lower rating if "The Wildest!" was longer.
Prima's a very good singer though.
3 stars for "The Wildest!".
The Who
3/5
Get that album cover away from me!
Luckily, the music on it is better.
The first track's a great start, with an amazing chorus.
After that banger, some songs are all right.
There were some that I didn't vibe with.
3 stars for "The Who Sell Out".
Mariah Carey
3/5
I'm annoyed to death by Carey's Christmas song.
It feels refreshing to listen to her other work.
The songs are lacking in variety.
But Carey's singing makes it better.
Unfortunately, two songs are produced by P. Diddy.
3 stars for "Butterfly".
Pixies
4/5
Another great album by Pixies.
Previously, I only knew them for one song, you know what it was.
The songs were a decent length for their genre.
One unusual thing I noticed about "Doolittle" is that the other tracks are better than the singles.
The album concludes with the banger "Gouge Away".
4 stars for "Doolittle".
Frank Sinatra
3/5
Finally, I got a Sinatra album today.
The songs of his I've heard before listening to this album were all good.
Who doesn't love Sinatra's singing?
The main problem with "Songs for Swingin' Lovers" is that the songs have no variety.
It would make this album much better.
3 stars for "Songs for Swingin' Lovers".
Johnny Cash
4/5
I can't believe there are so many live albums on this list.
"At Saint Quentin" is one of the better ones.
I liked the first track a lot.
I can't believe I'm getting many albums from 1970 or earlier.
Better yet, the banter isn't too annoying.
4 stars for "At St. Quentin".
GZA
4/5
You'll know you'll get a great eap album when it's by a Wu-Tang member.
GZA is the 2nd or 3rd member of Wu-Tang whose albums I've reviewed.
This album has plenty of hits I enjoy.
"Liquid Swords" gets better towards the end.
RZA's production helps this album a lot.
4 stars for "Liquid Swords".
Brian Eno
3/5
Who knew Brian Eno could sing?
I always thought he just did instrumentals.
Some of the songs are quite cool.
They sound like the 80s despite being made the decade before.
A few are a bit bad though.
3 stars for "Before and After Science".
The xx
4/5
The intro has to be one of the best of its kind.
Most of the tracks after that are fine.
"Crystallised" sounds like that one Bronski Beat song.
Songs on the second half all sound like an ending track.
To be honest, I liked it.
4 stars for "Self-Titled".
Isaac Hayes
5/5
I only knew Hayes as Chef from South Park and he had a few hit records.
Who knew the "Chocolate Salty Balls" guy made such an awesome album?
"Hot Buttered Soul" is the best soul album I've heard since Stevie Wonder's "Talking Book."
There's nothing I hate about it.
What an amazing end to the week!
5 stars for "Hot Buttered Soul".
King Crimson
4/5
I couldn't listen to this album yesterday as I was in hospital.
However, I did give it a listen today (Tuesday).
Why many people see "In the Court of the Crimson King" as a classic is easy to understand.
The songs are outstanding.
This week shall be epic.
4 stars for "In the Court of the Crimson King".
Fiona Apple
3/5
This album is a bit too weird for me and that says something.
It reminds me of stuff from SPRINTS and Wet Leg.
I remember enjoying Apple's first album (I gave it 5 stars).
Her songwriting is superb, but the music is just off-putting.
That's all I have to say today.
3 stars for "Fetch the Bolt Cutters".
The Stranglers
4/5
My dad loves The Stranglers, having gone to their concerts several times.
I also like them, but not as much as he does.
This album is very energetic, which I like.
It gets better in the second half.
My favourite track off the album is "Goodbye Toulouse".
4 stars for "Rattus Norvegicus".
David Gray
3/5
Tomorrow will be the last album I'll review for quite a while.
It turns out that my dad has died today.
I'm playing "Nightswimming" by REM, his favourite song.
"White Ladder" is pretty good for a 90s pop album.
It opens with a very strong track.
3 stars for "White Ladder".
Jefferson Airplane
4/5
The last album I'll review before my hiatus.
It was an instant classic.
One song was 20 years before its time.
Both singers were up to their game.
Some songs are a bit less significant.
4 stars for "Surrealistic Pillow".
Parliament
3/5
I'm back for good now.
This album was a good surprise.
I have, however, listened to better funk albums before.
The intro of "P-Funk" hyped me up.
Can't believe I've been reviewing albums for a whole year now.
3 stars for "Mothership Connection".
PJ Harvey
3/5
It's another good album this week.
I really enjoyed "O Stella", the second track.
Harvey could've sung better but I don't really care.
Her guitar work is excellent though.
So I have mixed feelings for this album.
3 stars for "Dry".
The Darkness
2/5
You could say this album "landed" on my recommendations.
I'm not keen on the style of "Permission to Land".
The frequent falsettos honestly suck.
I did like the rest of the Darkness performing.
This week's a dud.
2 stars for "Permission to Land".
Daft Punk
3/5
The two things I disliked about this album are the repetition and the length.
The beats are excellent and prevent me from hating "Homework".
"Da Funk" is my favourite track from the album.
"Around the World" was a bit too repetitive with the song title being said over 100 times in 7 minutes.
Even if I dislike this album, I love Daft Punk.
3 stars for Homework.
Talking Heads
2/5
This album confirms my previous statement about the Talking Heads.
Their music just isn't for me.
I have heard at least 10-20 albums like "MSABaF"
There are a few decent songs here and there.
I hope for a better week this time.
2 stars for "MSABaF".
:
Fleetwood Mac
4/5
I got a classic at last!
"Go Your Own Way" alone could give this album a high rating.
"Rumours" isn't as good as "DSotM", fight me.
But it's still a masterpiece no matter what.
It might be a 5-star after 5 listens.
4 stars for "Rumours".
2/5
This is XTC's penultimate album.
I have no idea how it got on this list.
"Apple Venus" doesn't even remotely resemble XTC.
I guess Nigel's parents cancelled their plans for him.
At least the album's listenable.
2 stars for "Apple Venus Volume 1".
Dizzee Rascal
2/5
To be honest, I was disappointed by this album.
"Stop Dat" is my favourite track by a country mile.
I was wondering when this album would end.
There are so much better British rap records out there.
I do commend Dizzee Rascal's beatmaking skills.
2 stars for "Boy in da Corner".
2Pac
4/5
The West Coast gets a win this time.
Shakur was one interesting guy.
"Dear Mama" is actually a 90s classic.
It's a shame he got ravelled up in a life of crime.
I wonder what 2Pac would be doing if he was alive.
4 stars for "Me Against the World".
Fela Kuti
3/5
Another album by someone I've never heard of.
Kuti's life was very eventful according to his Wikipedia page.
The songs on the album are pretty good.
Ginger Baker's on this album as well.
I also liked the bonus track with Tony Allen.
3 stars for "Live!".
Elliott Smith
3/5
It was a decent listen.
I previously listened to some of Smith's early work.
The first song was a banger, reminding me of the Beatles.
"Figure 8" got boring after the first half.
Luckily, it wasn't bad at all.
3 stars for "Figure 8"
Blondie
5/5
The best album I've heard all week.
I'm definitely not exaggerating.
Why didn't I listen to "Parallel Lines" sooner?
Every song is very good at its worst.
It's rare when the big hit is the least good.
5 stars for "Parallel Lines".
Dusty Springfield
3/5
I don't have much to say about this album.
It's just typical 60s fare.
A good thing is that it's not bad.
Just not on the same level as "Parallel Lines".
I'm also a bit late writing this review.
3 stars for "A Girl Called Dusty".
John Lee Hooker
4/5
It's a really good album.
The guest stars were superb as well.
Hooker was in his early 70s when he made this album, making it an incredible feat.
I hadn't even heard of him before. (Like with many artists here)
The song with Canned Heat was the best one.
4 stars for "The Healer".
Cat Stevens
4/5
It's a nice album.
Much better than I expected.
Cat Stevens can sing well, it turns out.
"Tea for the Tillerman" reminds me of early Bowie.
I hope this week has more incredible albums waiting for me.
4 stars for "Tea for the Tillerman".
David Bowie
3/5
Not bad for Bowie, who was in his 60s when this album was released.
I like the shift to rock in "The Next Day".
Similar to Bowie's 1976 song "Heroes".
"The Next Day", however, deteriorates during the second half.
It's a shame Bowie died after releasing his swansong "Blackstar".
3 stars for "The Next Day".
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
4/5
I really liked this album.
It's not grunge like the Wikipedia page said it was.
But rather fits into the hard rock subgenre.
Most songs are worth replaying.
"Farmer John" is an incredible cover.
4 stars for "Ragged Glory".
Radiohead
5/5
A lot of my favourite Radiohead songs are on this album.
The bookends are nothing but amazing.
I could say that about the whole album.
I'm just so happy that I finally got another Radiohead album.
There's a chance I might get lucky again.
5 stars for "Hail to the Thief".
Tito Puente
2/5
I'm not keen on the style of this album.
The songs on it are insignificant.
"Dance Mania" reminds me of those awful Aldi adverts(Those in the UK know what I'm on about).
The singing is really good despite that.
A few tracks of this album make a neat novelty EP.
2 stars for "Dance Mania".
Rage Against The Machine
2/5
An interesting album for the current era.
"Killing in the Name Of" will always be a great song.
I despise La Rocha's voice and the repetitive lyrics.
It could do with more verses.
"Self-Titled" would've been an incredible album if it didn't have those two things.
2 stars for "Self-Titled".
The Temptations
3/5
It's a nice album.
Nothing too special to note.
The longest track, "Runaway Child, Running Wild", is arguably the best song on the album.
The rest of the album is good but not great.
When it gets to the 6th track, it loses steam.
3 stars for "Cloud Nine".
Curtis Mayfield
5/5
I absolutely loved it.
Every song seems to be great.
Even more impressive is that "Superfly" is a soundtrack to a film of the same name.
Film soundtracks tend to suck with a few exceptions.
I'm so glad I experienced it.
5 stars for "Superfly".
Coldplay
5/5
Coldplay will always be special to me.
Their early stuff still stands out today.
"Parachutes" is a forever classic.
The underrated song of the album is "Shiver".
I enjoyed every song on it.
5 stars for "Parachutes".
Dolly Parton
4/5
It's rare to see full album collaborations on this list.
I enjoyed this album.
"Trio" has some nice songs, none of which are bad.
It belongs to the good kind of country, not that modern crap.
Dolly Parton's still going strong to this day.
4 stars for "Trio".
Beatles
5/5
I love every album made by the Beatles from 1965 to 1969 (Not a fan of "Let It Be").
Every song on it is a treat, even "Revolution 9"!.
"Helter Skelter" might be my favourite song from the album.
All four of the Beatles did a fantastic performance.
What a perfect way to end the week.
5 stars for "The White Album".
Bob Dylan
3/5
Yet another Bob Dylan album.
There are 7 LPs of his on this list.
It's nice to listen to for a few songs.
Unfortunately, it gets boring after 50 minutes.
At least Dylan's songwriting is great.
3 stars for "Blonde on Blonde".
The Flaming Lips
5/5
It was absolutely marvellous.
Way beyond my expectations.
I just loved "The Soft Bulletin".
Now I regret not listening to it sooner.
2 awesome albums within a week.
5 stars for "The Soft Bulletin".
Jean-Michel Jarre
5/5
One of the albums in my Electronic Hall of Fame, along with "Geogaddi" and "Autobahn".
I wonder what it must have been like to be around when the album was released.
The whole is one epic song split into 6 parts.
Part 1 is my favourite, with Part 4 being 2nd.
2 fantastic albums in a row.
5 stars for "Oxygène".
Yes
4/5
A letdown compared to the last two albums I reviewed.
"The Yes Album" is still a great record, though.
The vocals are pretty good, along with the instrumentation.
So I enjoyed this album.
Unrelated note: Do not let AI music kill human creativity.
4 stars for "The Yes Album".
Depeche Mode
4/5
First things first, "Never Let Me Down Again" is just damn awesome.
The rest of the album pales in comparison.
I prefer "Violator" over "Music for the Masses".
There's still a lot of fun stuff on "MftM".
I had a great week on this website.
4 stars for "Music for the Masses".
Aretha Franklin
4/5
I remember when Franklin died.
That was when I knew nothing about her.
"Lady Soul" is an exceptional album.
There isn't a bad song on it.
This album continues my great run.
4 stars for "Lady Soul".
The Byrds
3/5
It was an alright album.
There's nothing that makes it special.
I've forgotten most of it already.
"Fifth Dimension" was like its contemporaries in the mid 60s.
I'd like to know how The Byrds managed to get 5 albums on this list.
3 stars for "Fifth Dimension".
Laura Nyro
3/5
I'm not particularly fond of some songs on this album.
However, Nyro is a good singer and songwriter.
"Poverty Train" is a great track, in my opinion.
I can also say that about the slower tracks.
I forgot to listen to this album yesterday, so I'm listening to it now.
3 stars for "Eli and the Thirteenth Confession".
Dr. Octagon
5/5
I don't understand why people hate this album here.
It has very dark and crude subject matter, which I understand why reviewers might find it disturbing.
But "Dr. Octogonecologyst" is better than most of today's rap albums.
Who can forget the fantastic beats brought to us by Dan the Automator?
The skits are a bit lame, as is the case with almost all rap albums.
5 stars for "Dr. Octogonecologyst".
Sufjan Stevens
4/5
It started a bit poorly, but it improved.
I somehow never heard this album before.
The lyrics on "Illinois" are well-written.
A perfect representation of the state with the same name.
I loved "The Man From Metropolis Stole Our Hearts", my favourite from the album.
4 stars for "Illinois(e)".
Supertramp
3/5
It's a nice detour into prog-rock.
However, "Crime of the Century" is nowhere near as good as the likes of Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree.
I suppose some people really love it.
The outro of the title track makes a classic conclusion to the album.
Other than that, there's nothing to say about it.
3 stars for "Crime of the Century".
UB40
3/5
I'm glad that the dreadful "Red Red Wine" isn't on this album.
That song ruined my perception of UB40 for a few years.
There are many pretty cool songs on "Signing Off".
It could do with more songs with lyrics rather than instrumentals.
At least I don't have a negative view of the album.
3 stars for "Signing Off"
T. Rex
3/5
This album starts so strongly for a glam album.
I'm not a glam fan compared to my late dad.
"Get It On" is overrated, in my opinion, and I don't care.
The rest of the songs on "Electric Warrior" are fine.
It's also an ok album to listen to in the background.
3 stars for "Electric Warrior".
Earth, Wind & Fire
4/5
I know when an album is great when I hear it.
"TtWotW" is one of them.
This album proves that Earth, Wind & Fire is more than a few nice hits.
I like how there's no filler on it.
Here's to another fine album!
4 stars for "That's the Way of the World".
David Bowie
3/5
Yet another David Bowie album.
Looks like I've got my first average album in weeks.
I appreciate Bowie's singing and lyrics, but not too much.
"Station to Station" is nice to listen to when you're bored.
However, I don't recommend giving it a spin for casual listening.
3 stars for "Station to Station".
Paul Simon
2/5
It's not as good as Simon's work with Garfunkel by far.
This week has been a stinker by comparison to the last one.
The worst song on "Graceland" is "I Know What I Know".
Its vocals drive me up the wall.
The lovely a cappella song "Homeless" features Ladysmith Black Mambazo, whose album I quite liked.
2 stars for "Graceland".
I didn't know Rod Stewart was in a band before.
A pretty good one, in fact.
I think "ANiaGaaWtaBH" is slightly better than Paul Simon's "Graceland".
It's still poor compared to last week's albums.
This album's title is longer than the length of said album itself.
3 stars for "ANiaGaaWtaBH".
The National
3/5
The singer on this album sounds like David Bowie on certain songs.
Prior to yesterday, I hadn't listened to any of The National's discography.
"High Violet" is too mellow for repeated listening.
My favourite tracks are "Bloodbuzz Ohio" and "Sorrow".
So, that's another album off the list.
3 stars for "High Violet".
The Rolling Stones
3/5
There's one song everyone knows from this album, and it's "Sympathy for the Devil".
I believe it's the 2nd best song on "Beggar's Banquet".
"Street Fighting Man" is the best (I think).
The rest of the tracks are average.
Unfortunately, I've got COVID and feel ill.
3 stars for "Beggar's Banquet".
Duke Ellington
3/5
I can't believe there are so many live jazz albums on this list.
It's starting to get a little repetitive.
The middle section of the first song piqued my interest.
"Blues to Be There" was ok, a bit boring.
I'm feeling better than I was yesterday.
3 stars for "Ellington at Newport".
OutKast
3/5
Shouldn't this count as two albums?.
I preferred "Speakerboxxx" over "The Love Below".
The latter is too poppy for me.
I wish this album had "Ms. Jackson" on it.
Hopefully, I get a fantastic album this week.
3 stars for "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below".
Led Zeppelin
4/5
Another Led Zeppelin album, another positive review from me.
"Physical Graffiti" doesn't get boring despite being nearly 1 1/2 hours long.
Only very few albums have achieved this.
But it's not enough for a perfect score.
The second half could've been a bit better.
4 stars for "Physical Graffiti".
The Doors
3/5
This album is best experienced in its entirety.
Even though it's not as good as other classic albums.
"L.A. Woman" has some excellent bass work.
It's a shame that this album is Jim Morrison's last before his death.
I wonder if I'll get another great album this time.
3 stars for "L.A. Woman".
Beatles
4/5
When "Revolver" was released, the world got a taste of the Beatles' true potential.
Many successful experiments followed this album.
I'm one of the people who enjoyed "Revolver".
There are many fun songs, like "Yellow Submarine" and "Tomorrow Never Knows".
I think this album is my 4th favourite Beatles record.
4 stars for "Revolver"
Franz Ferdinand
5/5
I haven’t got any WiFi today.
That means I’m on my phone today.
This was the first album I completely enjoyed on the first listen.
I still remember that day.
“This Fire” is my favourite song from this album.
5 stars for “Self Titled”.
R.E.M.
4/5
This is much better than R.E.M.'s other album, "Murmurs".
"ItEotWAWKI" isn't even the best song on "Document".
The first song sounds 20 years ahead of its time.
This week seems to be amazing so far.
Better yet, my WiFi is back.
4 stars for "Document".
The Kinks
3/5
This album was okay.
Nothing to write home about.
“Something Else” has broken my epic album streak.
I won’t listen to an album today because I’m in hospital.
Hopefully, I’ll listen to the next one tomorrow.
3 stars for “Something Else by the Kinks”.
Rufus Wainwright
3/5
There's one song on this that I adored.
It's called "Go Or Go Ahead".
Wainwright would make a great singer for Radiohead if Thom leaves.
The rest of the songs on "Want One" are average.
It appears my next album is "Surf's Up" by the Beach Boys.
3 stars for "Want One".
The Beach Boys
5/5
It turns out I was one album behind this week.
Brian Wilson just died a few days before I listened to this album.
"Surf's Up" is an amazing experience.
Everyone involved was brilliant, not a single dud among them.
The Beach Boys are yet another band I thought were cheesy, but I ended up being wrong.
5 stars for "Surf's Up".
Jethro Tull
4/5
The title track is just perfection.
Nothing else on "Aqualung" comes close, except for "Locomotive Breath".
All of the tracks are great.
I've had 2 brilliant albums in a row.
Let's get another one...
4 stars for "Aqualung".
Beastie Boys
4/5
The beats in this album are sublime.
I liked the verses as well.
Tracks 1-10 are nearly perfect.
There are some alright punk songs on "Ill Communication".
The instrumental tracks don't fit the album too well.
4 stars for "Ill Communication".
The Doors
4/5
I first heard "Break On Through" on a trailer for an NFT (Remember those?) MMO.
To the surprise of no one, the game either failed or was never made.
"Self Titled" is way better than any NFT in existence.
Every song has a charm to it.
I hope to have another great album soon.
4 stars for "Self Titled".
Bad Company
3/5
You know I'm having a fantastic week when this album is the worst one.
In other words, it's not as great as the others but it's still cool.
"Self Titled" has some good songs in store.
My favourite is "Self Titled (The song)".
I hope for some great songs in the future.
3 stars for "Self Titled".
Holger Czukay
2/5
I see Czukay did what Fatboy Slim would do 20 years later.
An album made with numerous samples was unheard of at the time.
"Movies" is a slightly intriguing LP to listen to.
The best song from that album is "Persian Lovers".
If only the others had the same charm as that one.
2 stars for "Movies".
Siouxsie And The Banshees
3/5
This is the last album of the week.
"Juju" is a pretty cool album in my opinion.
"Arabian Nights" is the best of the nine tracks here.
It's a shame "Spellbound" was a poor start for "Juju".
Also, I'm getting tired of early 80s post-punk.
3 stars for "Juju".
Dire Straits
4/5
There was one song on "Brothers in Arms" that I seriously loved.
Its name is "Why Worry", the fifth track.
Everything else was of high quality.
The songs after "Why Worry" could've done with improvement.
I can't wait until the next album.
4 stars for "Brothers in Arms".
Tom Tom Club
2/5
This album has some early specks of hip-hop.
The first track has some flows that don't work, and the chorus sucks.
"Genius of Love" has been sampled by various artists since its conception.
I do like the last few songs, though, except for the last one.
I believe my favourite from the album is "On On On On".
2 stars for "Self Titled".
Ray Charles
3/5
I prefer Ray Charles' other stuff to this album.
There are only 2 types of songs on "MSiCaWM": 50s ballads and jazz.
Those tunes are still good, though.
I did accidentally listen to "MSiCaWM" out of order.
Also, why does this album's title sound like a compilation that was released 20 years later?
3 stars for "MSiCaWM".
Frank Ocean
4/5
I decided to listen to this album on Friday as I didn't have much time.
The inclusion of the classic PS1 startup sound in the intro hooked me in.
A few songs in, I got the hype surrounding Frank Ocean.
There's so much to like about "Channel Orange".
The skits aren't bad either.
4 stars for "Channel Orange".
Miles Davis
4/5
I was starting to get tired of jazz.
This album piqued my interest in the genre again.
All the songs are very good background music.
It's safe to say that Miles Davis is the best jazz musician of the '50s and '60s.
I wonder what this week has in store...
4 stars for "Kind of Blue"
The Notorious B.I.G.
4/5
I really liked this album.
One of Biggie’s only records.
If it weren’t for that interlude, it would be absolute gold.
It’s worth noting that P. Diddy is an abomination.
At least he didn’t produce the whole album.
4 stars for “Ready to Die”.
Radiohead
5/5
I love everything about this album.
That sentence wasn't an exaggeration by any means.
I believe it to be on par with "OK Computer".
"The National Anthem" is my favourite from "Kid A".
There is no way I'm giving it a rating below the maximum score.
5 stars for "Kid A".
Public Enemy
4/5
This is Public Enemy's best album; there's no contest here.
There are many songs to like here.
I don't like spoken word songs, so "Pollywanacraka" is my least favourite on "Fear of a Black Planet".
This album saves its best song, "Fight the Power", for last.
I hope I get another great LP today.
My Bloody Valentine
4/5
"Isn't Anything" isn't as legendary as "Loveless", but it still has the MBV charm.
It begins with a strong track called "Soft as Snow".
The others are cool as well.
Some songs prevent "Isn't Anything" from earning a 5-star rating.
"All I Need" is one of the greatest songs ever recorded.
4 stars for "Isn't Anything".
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
It's been a great week this time.
However, "Born in the U.S.A" is the weakest of the albums.
It's still good compared to albums from other weeks.
"No Surrender" is the best from "Born in the U.S.A".
It's better than most of the singles from the album.
3 stars for "Born in the U.S.A".
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
4/5
This is album number 4 I've heard from Neil Young.
It's really nice to listen to.
The long songs don't drag out.
It's one of Young and Crazy Horse's best.
Let's move on to the next album.
4 stars for "Everyone Knows This is Nowhere".
The Beach Boys
5/5
This is where the Beach Boys begin for me.
Most BB albums before "Pet Sounds" aren't worth talking about.
There's 60s perfection throughout the album.
It's up there with the Beatles' albums post-"Revolver".
What an amazing experience.
5 stars for "Pet Sounds".
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
4/5
This is my second Neil Young album in 3 days.
The first song on "Rust Never Sleeps" is his best.
I prefer the first half of this album.
The second part should have been more like the first.
Wouldn't it be funny if I got another Neil Young album?
4 stars for "Rust Never Sleeps".
Pere Ubu
2/5
That guy's singing is just terrible.
Even I could sing better than him.
It's no surprise that users consider "Dub Housing" to be terrible.
I do like the rest of the band, though.
"Blow Daddy-O" is my favourite from the album.
2 stars for "Dub Housing".
Santana
4/5
I didn't know this album was so popular.
It's one of those unique albums that surprise me.
There's so much to like about "Abraxas".
Santana managed to combine two entirely different genres and combine them perfectly.
What a way to end the week.
4 stars for "Abraxas"
The Temptations
4/5
It's an excellent album.
Every song on "All Directions" is great.
"Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" is nothing but an epic 11-minute track.
The second half could be a bit better, I suppose.
Other than that, I appreciate it.
4 stars for "All Directions".
Scritti Politti
2/5
There's nothing but stereotypical 80s music, just not the good stuff.
The kind of stuff that frequently pops up on generic radio stations.
"Cupid & Psyche 85" is a nice-sounding record, but that doesn't save it from being derivative.
Scritti Politti should be ashamed of themselves.
I'll stick to more daring and better albums.
2 stars for "Cupid & Psyche 85".
Girls Against Boys
3/5
This album is better than that Scritti Politti Album I reviewed yesterday.
I haven't heard anything like "Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby" before.
There are still a few problems with this album.
Some tracks are more boring than others.
"Rockets Are Red" has an amazing riff, making it my favourite from the album.
3 stars for "Venus Luxury No. 1 Baby".
Mike Oldfield
4/5
So I finally got this album.
"Tubular Bells" is impressive, considering Oldfield was only 19 when he recorded it.
Most of the album has some cool parts.
Everyone knows the first bit from The Exorcist.
Look out for Oldfield's vocals in the second half; you'll find them humourous.
4 stars for "Tubular Bells".
The Rolling Stones
2/5
Just a typical Rolling Stones album.
"Aftermath" was released before they became great.
The songs sound nice for a 60s record.
"Going Home", despite being lengthy, is the best track on "Aftermath".
A slightly disappointing end to the week.
2 stars for "Aftermath".
George Harrison
4/5
I didn't have time to listen to this album yesterday.
"All Things Must Pass" is the best post-Beatles album by any of the Fab Four.
It even surpasses John Lennon's "Imagine".
Harrison was way ahead of his time.
I can't explain why I hadn't listened to this album before.
4 stars for "All Things Must Pass".
Lou Reed
4/5
I missed another album due to time constraints.
It looks like I'm on track now.
The only song I heard from "Transformer" before listening to it was "Walk on the Wild Side".
Most of the album was great.
I thought "New York Telephone Conversation" would be a real telephone conversation from New York.
4 stars for "Transformer".
Black Sabbath
5/5
Ozzy just passed yesterday before I listened to this album.
I have no idea how the hell Black Sabbath managed to make this album in 1970.
The title track is nothing but pure metal at its finest.
What's not to love about "Self Titled"?
May the Prince of Darkness rest in peace.
5 stars for "Self Titled.
Mekons
2/5
It's a step down from the previous album I reviewed (Black Sabbath).
There's one song worth listening to, and that's "Hard to Be Human Again".
The punk riffs outdo every other track on "Fear and Whiskey".
I'd be praising this album all day if the whole album were like "Hard to Be Human Again".
Instead, it's just 80s fare that should've been forgotten.
2 stars for "Fear and Whiskey".
4/5
It's another album I've enjoyed.
Much better than that Mekons album.
I loved Harvey's collaboration with Thom Yorke in "The Mess We're In".
I think "We Float" is the best song from the album.
It has a perfect chorus, and Harvey nails it with her singing.
4 stars for "SFtCSFtS".
Fatboy Slim
3/5
The first few songs are absolute classics.
I wish the same could be said about the other ones.
"You've Come a Long Way, Baby" suffers from repetition.
This is also the case with other '90s electronic albums.
It seems that Fatboy Slim is only capable of a very limited number of great songs.
3 stars for "You've Come a Long Way, Baby".
The The
3/5
This album is way better than its 80s pop contemporaries.
I enjoyed "This is the Day", a masterpiece.
It reminded me of Joy Division's "Disorder," but with a more poppy feel.
The other songs on "Soul Mining" are dull compared to "This is the Day", "Giant", and the first track.
The The could've been another Scritti Politti, but they were wise not to.
3 stars for "Soul Mining".
Fatboy Slim
2/5
I've got the other Fatboy Slim album on this list.
It's hardly better than the other one.
"Better Living Through Chemistry" has some interesting beats, though.
I think that "Santa Cruz" is the best song on the album, and it should've been a single.
The actual singles are no better than the filler.
2 stars for "Better Living Through Chemistry".
Dusty Springfield
3/5
"Dusty in Memphis" is a good album.
There are some neat songs to be found.
Then again, it's just your standard '60s album.
It's still better than those '80s pop songs.
What a nice record to end the week with.
3 stars for "Dusty in Memphis".
Jorge Ben Jor
3/5
Another album I've never heard of before.
It's really good throughout.
There's an interesting mix of genres on "Africa Brasil".
Rod Stewart accidentally ripped off one of the songs from this album.
"Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" ended up borrowing from "Taj Mahal".
3 stars for "Africa Brazil".
Count Basie & His Orchestra
3/5
A nice jazz album for a change.
I liked Basie's piano abilities.
However, the album gets boring halfway through.
There isn't a lot to say about "The Atomic Mr. Basie".
But the nuclear explosion on the cover is cool.
3 stars for "The Atomic Mr. Basie".
The The
2/5
"Infected" is inferior to The The's "Soul Mining".
It feels more like regular post-punk.
Every song on the album feels dated and should be left in the '80s.
I do like the lyrics on "Infected", the album, not just the song itself.
I'll forget about this album tomorrow.
2 stars for "Infected".
Manu Chao
4/5
You know someone's talented when they can sing in multiple languages.
Manu Chao is one of those people.
He can sing in Spanish, French, Portuguese and English on this album alone.
The music on "Clandestino" is superb.
I'm very impressed by Manu Chao on this album.
4 stars for "Clandestino".
The Zombies
3/5
I'm happy that the Zombies are still going strong.
Their album is also good.
It's a bit too similar to the Beatles to me.
But "Odessey and Oracle" has some surprises of its own.
"Brief Candles" is my favourite song on the album.
3 stars for "Odessey and Oracle".
Deep Purple
3/5
I loved the first minute of "Speed King".
That's how you start an album.
The rest of "Deep Purple in Rock" is fine.
Blackmore's guitar skills should be appreciated more.
This album could do without the keyboards.
3 stars for "Deep Purple in Rock".
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
2/5
It's not my kind of music.
This album appears to be obscure, as it lacks a Wikipedia page.
I do like the instrumentation.
The fact that Ali Khan's family had been musicians for centuries is amazing.
My favourite from the album is the final song because it's different.
2 stars for "Devotional Songs".
Van Morrison
3/5
Remember Van Morrison's loony phase?
I remember it like it was yesterday.
"Moondance" has some good songs.
However, I wouldn't consider it one of the greatest albums of all time.
It seems I had a rubbish week this time.
3 stars for "Moondance".
Green Day
4/5
Finally, I've got a great album.
The title song remains as relevant today as it was 20 years ago.
I just love "Boulevard of Broken Dreams".
A few album tracks could have done better, though.
This album is Green Day's best.
4 stars for "American Idiot".
Simon & Garfunkel
5/5
Finally, an amazing album to end the week.
I enjoyed it as much as "Bridge Over Troubled Water".
Every song on "Bookends" is marvellous.
There's an early Moog bassline on one of the songs.
I thought "Old People's Voices" would just be a song, but the title was right after all.
5 stars for "Bookends".
Arcade Fire
3/5
This album is just average.
I did enjoy some of the songs on "The Suburbs".
Those tracks are preventing it from a 2-star rating.
None of the songs are on the same level as the album I listened to yesterday
There are better bands than Arcade Fire out there.
3 stars for "The Suburbs".
Willie Colón & Rubén Blades
2/5
I hate salsa music so much.
That Aldi advert made sure I did.
The vocals are great, but the music leaves more to be desired.
"Pedro Navaja" can be considered to be the best track on this album.
What a bad start to the week.
2 stars for "Siembra".
Big Star
3/5
Like one reviewer said, this album has the right components, but it needs to be put together.
The first half contains average glam-rock.
What about the second half?
It's just plain acoustic tracks.
I prefer this album over the salsa record I reviewed yesterday.
3 stars for "#1 Record".
Manic Street Preachers
3/5
There are no mind-blowing albums this week.
"Everything Must Go" is an average album.
After Richie's disappearance, Manic Street Preachers seemed to sizzle out.
I probably should reconsider the rating for "The Holy Bible"; it's too low for what should be a great album.
The last song is a masterpiece.
3 stars for "Everything Must Go".
Crosby, Stills & Nash
3/5
An average ending to an average week.
I didn't receive a single 4-star or higher album.
"Self-Titled" has some good moments, like the first song.
The fact that there are 3 famous, talented musicians on this album is fantastic.
I hope I get a better week this time.
3 stars for "Self-Titled".
Kendrick Lamar
5/5
"To Pimp a Butterfly" is every bit as fantastic as everyone says.
One day, this will be one of my all-time favourite albums.
"u" and "Wesley's Theory" are the best songs.
This week's looking bright already.
I hope the hits won't stop coming.
5 stars for "To Pimp a Butterfly".
Astor Piazzolla
3/5
A letdown compared to the previous album I reviewed.
There seem to be a few albums on this list without Wikipedia pages.
I liked the last few tracks.
The first ones are boring.
Another album for the list.
3 stars for "The New Tango".
Nitin Sawhney
2/5
I just listened to a poor man's Portishead at first, but then it shifted into something else entirely.
It wasn't better than the trip-hop that came before.
There are influences from Indian music that I appreciate.
"Beyond Skin" mostly consists of worn-out electronic beats.
It also seems to be the Ground Zero of "Chilled Out Beats to Study To" compilations on YouTube.
2 stars for "Beyond Skin".
Scott Walker
1/5
This album sounds like an old musical.
I absolutely hate old musicals.
Walker's singing and sometimes songwriting are good, but I'm not keen.
How did a week that started perfectly turn into a nightmare?
Scott's discography seems to get better in the years that follow, but none of those albums are on the list.
1 star for "Scott 2".
OutKast
4/5
Much better than the last OutKast album I reviewed.
I disliked that album because it was too different from OutKast's usual style.
"Stankonia" is a great album that offers more than just its singles.
"B.O.B." and "Ms Jackson" remain classics to this day.
What a nice end to a mixed week.
4 stars for "Stankonia".
Linkin Park
John Coltrane
3/5
I'm starting to get fed up with jazz.
Most jazz albums sound the same.
"A Love Supreme" is still a nice album, though.
The first part was my favourite.
I'll listen to the next album tomorrow because I'm a bit ill.
3 stars for "A Love Supreme".
Aimee Mann
4/5
I actually liked this album a lot.
It reminds me of other cool records.
"Stupid Thing" is my favourite from "Whatever".
Why isn't "I've Had It" the last song?
"Way Back Then" doesn't feel like a closing track.
4 stars for "Whatever".
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
I expected this album to be amazing, but I was wrong.
"Armed Forces" turned out to be an average album.
I still liked some of the songs on it.
"Big Boys" is one of those tracks.
I'm disappointed by Costello, who has multiple albums on this list.
3 stars for "Armed Forces".
Sade
3/5
One of the better 80s pop albums.
I can see why people love it.
"Diamond Life" is still a bit bland, though.
"Why Can't We Live Together" is my favourite of the 9 songs on it.
Better yet, none of the tunes on this album have appeared in adverts.
3 stars for "Diamond Life".
Funkadelic
4/5
I expected more vocals, but it's still a fantastic album.
The title track starts "Maggot Brain" with a bang.
Most of the other songs are fine as well.
After 30 minutes of seriousness, the last song ends with fart noises.
I'm not making that up.
4 stars for "Maggot Brain".
3/5
If you heard one song on this album, you've listened to them all.
Every track is almost identical, with the lyrics being the only distinguishing feature.
I'm glad that those songs sound good.
This album could've been a lot worse.
It's also only 28 minutes long.
3 stars for "DCHaD(WLoYM)".
Genesis
4/5
Do the compliers of the 1001 Albums list have a grudge against Phil Collins?
Neither of the two Genesis albums on the list has him as vocalist.
I'm not complaining, though, just an observation.
"The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" is a great album that deserves its spot.
Way better than the last few records I had.
4 stars for "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway".
3/5
The album that invented Britpop, I think.
It's far from Blur's best outing.
They would begin to shine an album later, which I reviewed a year ago.
Graham Coxon's unusual guitar style is clear on "Modern Life is Rubbish".
There are some standouts like "Oily Water" and "Turn It Up".
3 stars for "Modern Life is Rubbish".
Thelonious Monk
2/5
I'm officially fed up with jazz.
This album sounds like every other jazz record.
I'm not saying that all jazz albums are rubbish, but "Brilliant Corners" is one of the disappointing ones.
The piano bits are nice to hear.
Let's hope I don't get another bad album.
2 stars for "Brilliant Corners".
The Beta Band
2/5
I misread the album's release date as 1971.
The low-budget album art likely contributed to that.
"Hot Shots II" itself sucked with disappointing tracks throughout.
The album is supposed to feature a mix of electronic music and rock.
However, it fails at both genres.
2 stars for "Hot Shots II"
My Bloody Valentine
5/5
I just love "Loveless" so much.
It's one of my top 100 albums.
Half of "Loveless" is simply flawless.
It's safe to say that this album is significantly better than the previous one I reviewed.
Two fantastic albums in one week, lucky me.
5 stars for "Loveless".
The Roots
3/5
"Phrenology" is a good album, neither bad nor great.
There are some cool tracks on it.
I really liked "Water", "Phrenology's own "Bohemian Rhapsody".
However, I do have a headache, which affected my enjoyment of the album.
The hardcore punk mini-song near the beginning was fun.
3 stars for "Phrenology".
Pearl Jam
4/5
A great debut album for Pearl Jam.
"Ten" has 10 songs, hence the name, nearly all of which are worth listening to on repeat.
The big single "Alive" is good, but the lesser-known songs from the album deserve love as well.
"Deep" is the one that should've been a single instead of "Ocean".
It reminds me of a great early Soundgarden song.
4 stars for "Ten".
Rush
3/5
It looks like my streak of great albums has ended.
I still think "Moving Pictures" is a nice record, though.
It doesn't compare to Rush's titular song on their other album, "2141".
Perhaps, 80s prog rock isn't my cup of tea.
Let's see what album I get next time.
3 stars for "Moving Pictures".
Ozomatli
4/5
Ozomantil didn't upload this album on YouTube, strangely enough.
(Turns out they did, but it's not available.)
I managed to track down most of the songs.
The songs I found are excellent, and "Street Signs" deserves its spot on the list.
This is the first time I didn't have a complete album to listen to.
4 stars for "Street Signs". (I'll buy a CD of it one day)
Grateful Dead
2/5
I just found out that I'm not a Deadhead.
This live album is way too long and dull.
I would've given "Live/Dead" 3 stars if the songs didn't go on forever.
Maybe I'm too sober for this album.
At least the songs sound nice.
2 stars for "Live/Dead".
Primal Scream
3/5
This is the band that made "Rocks", a terrible song.
"Vanishing Point" could've been a 5-star album, but it doesn't feel like one.
I really liked some of the sounds in this album.
There's something special about the synths on "Long Life".
"Kowalski" is worth a listen too.
3 stars for "Vanishing Point".
R.E.M.
3/5
I've been suffering from a cold recently.
It has somewhat ruined my listening experience.
"Green" isn't as fantastic as "Automatic for the People".
My favourite song from the album is "Turn You Inside Out".
It should've been the opening track.
3 stars for "Green".
Metallica
4/5
Didn't have much time yesterday, so I listened to it on Tuesday.
A fine album in my opinion.
"Self-Titled" has some really cool songs.
The first two tracks are the best ones.
Imagine if the other songs were as good as these two.
4 stars for "Self-Titled".
X-Ray Spex
2/5
There's nothing special about this album.
However, I get why people like "Germfree Adolescents".
It just isn't for me, a guy who doesn't like 70s British Punk.
"Plastic Bag" is a really good song.
If only the rest of the album were like that.
2 stars for "Germfree Adolescents".
The Mars Volta
3/5
I liked this album quite a bit.
The second track stands out as a classic.
The Mars Volta was part of the next generation of prog-rockers back then.
Another thing I liked about this album is the lead singer.
In other news, I have recovered from my cold.
3 stars for "Deloused in the Comatorium".
Sepultura
4/5
I wasn't expecting such a fun album.
Some folks don't like nu-metal, but I do.
I can't believe I'd never heard of Sepultra before yesterday.
One song even features Jon Davis, Mike Patton, and DJ Lethal.
The last album I reviewed was my 400th.
4 stars for "Roots".
Killing Joke
5/5
I can safely say that this is the best post-punk album in history.
There's no way anyone in the post-punk scene can do better.
I've only listened to "Requiem" before listening to the full album.
"Self Titled" is now one of my favourite records of all time.
What a way to end an average week.
5 stars for "Self Titled".
Leonard Cohen
3/5
A disappointment compared to "Killing Joke".
The songs on "Songs From a Room" are a bit boring.
I think there are too many Leonard Cohen albums on the list.
There's no doubt that Cohen was a great songwriter.
At least this album's not an '80s pop record.
3 stars for "Songs From a Room".
The Sonics
2/5
This album sounds as if it were recorded with a straw.
I've heard better garage rock songs from that era.
Some of the rock 'n roll covers remind me of early Status Quo.
"Here Come the Sonics" could be an ok record to dance to in a '50s diner.
A good thing about this album is that it's short.
2 stars for "Here Are the Sonics".
Elton John
4/5
It's about time I got an Elton John album on this website.
I had never listened to "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" before.
To no one's surprise, it was great.
There are a few tracks that should've been singles.
Let's hope I get another good album.
4 stars for "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road".
Tim Buckley
3/5
This is the moment when my albums from this week start to feel stale.
Two albums this week were fantastic, but "Goodbye and Hello" is less amazing.
Luckily, it's not as bad as that Sonics record.
"Goodbye and Hello" is actually ahead of its time.
That doesn't mean it's a five-star album.
3 stars for "Goodbye and Hello".
Antony and the Johnsons
3/5
This album is similar to artists like Hozier, Sam Smith, and John Legend.
I appreciate the progressive nature of "I Am a Bird Now".
Lou Reed features in one of the songs.
My only problem with this album is that it's repetitive to the point that all tracks sound identical.
It ends up being boring after a while.
3 stars for "I Am a Bird Now".
Sonic Youth
4/5
The time has come for me to review this album.
Now I get why most people love it.
There's a nice bit of noise mixed in with alt-rock.
"Dirty" even has a cover of a song by a short-lived hardcore band called the Untouchables.
That band only recorded four tracks, one of which was a cover of another artist's song.
4 stars for "Dirty".
The Only Ones
3/5
This album could've been better.
"Self-Titled"'s Wikipedia page says it's partly a punk album, but there's barely any in it.
I've heard other records similar to "Self-Titled"
That singer sounds like an amateur, and that's about the only thing punk about this album.
I hope the next album is better.
3 stars for "Self Titled".
808 State
3/5
I'm not in the right state of mind to fully experience "90".
"Anaconda" seems to be an ancestor of phonk, a genre popular among kids who think they're cool.
I only like a few songs of said genre.
Some of the songs on "90" are actually good, like "808080808".
At least I listened to 808 State for the first time.
3 stars for "90".
Weather Report
3/5
A more interesting approach to jazz.
"Birdland" did its job as an opening track.
However, the other tracks weren't as great.
I liked the inclusion of synths on "Heavy Weather".
The album reminds me of stuff from Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
3 stars for "Heavy Weather".
Sugar
3/5
I just got this album as soon as Sugar announced their return.
"Copper Blue" tries so hard to sound like its better contemporaries.
It comes off as a Poundland "Automatic for the People".
There's even a song coincidentally called "Man on the Moon".
However, I do like the riffs on the songs.
3 stars for "Copper Blue".
Jazmine Sullivan
2/5
I hate spoken word tracks.
If I wanted them, I would be listening to a podcast instead
This album has SIX spoken word interludes.
The 8 songs of "Heaux Tales" are a bit dull.
Most of them sound like stuff on Radio 1.
2 stars for "Heaux Tales".
Blue Cheer
2/5
This album wasn't any better than the last album I reviewed.
"Vincebus Eruptum" is a product of its time with songs that once sounded cool.
It's similar to Gratful Dead's live album, another lousy effort.
I liked the sound of some of the tracks.
There's a decent song that isn't on the original release.
2 stars for "Vincebus Eruptum".
The Good, The Bad & The Queen
3/5
It's the best album I've had all week.
That's to say "Self-Titled" isn't too bad.
It started off poorly, but then it got better.
Some "Self-Titled" songs feel like they could've once been Gorillaz demos.
Sometimes I imagine 2D singing.
3 stars for "Self-Titled".
Can
3/5
I first knew about Can from their delightfully weird track "Aumgn"
It's perfect for reading horror stories.
The other five tracks on "Tago Mago" aren't as strange or magnificent.
They're still worth listening to, especially the longer tracks.
Let's hope I get a fantastic album next time.
3 stars for "Tago Mago".
The Isley Brothers
5/5
I knew I was in for a good time when I heard the first song.
Every track was simply brilliant.
The guitar solo on "Summer Breeze" was amazing.
I did not expect such a fantastic album.
It wasn't until recently that I learned that the Isley Brothers performed "Twist And Shout" first.
5 stars for "3 + 3".
Doves
4/5
I've got another great album.
An improvement over the last Doves album I reviewed.
The first 5 songs were the definition of excellence.
"There Goes the Fear" is the best song I've found in weeks.
The second half could've been a tad better.
4 stars for "The Last Broadcast".
David Bowie
4/5
This album deserves its place on the list.
The title track is overrated, to be frank.
"Heroes" was played a bit too much.
I enjoyed the instrumental second half, which feels almost like a different record.
The second song is a hidden gem.
4 stars for "Heroes".
Motörhead
3/5
One of the reviewers on this website was mostly right.
Half of the songs sound identical to each other.
At least those tracks sound good.
"Metropolis" is my favourite, as it deviates from the other songs,
I would've enjoyed that performance if I were alive and in Hammersmith in 1981.
3 stars for "No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith".
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
This is my second time listening to this album.
It's still average compared to other supposed classics.
"Born to Run" has two great songs: "Thunder Road" and the title track.
The other six were let-downs.
I hope I get an amazing album to end the week.
3 stars for "Born to Run".
4/5
Adverts have slightly ruined a few Oasis songs.
I wonder how much advertisers pay Oasis?
This album has many famous songs, like the unfortunately overrated "Wonderwall".
The fake-out at the beginning of "Hello" was amusing.
Another week has finished.
4 stars for "(What's the Story) Morning Glory".
Brian Eno
3/5
I believe this album is the definition of ambient.
"Ambient 1" should preferably be listened to while doing something.
It gets boring when you play it at a party.
"Ambient 1" could send you to sleep.
I appreciate Eno's work, including the Windows 95 startup sound.
3 stars for "Ambient 1/ Music for Airports".
John Prine
4/5
One of the best country albums I've had the pleasure of hearing.
It's a shame that John Prine is unknown in the UK.
The first few songs on "Self-Titled" are perfect.
There's nothing else I can say about this album.
I hope I get an album that's just as good or better,
4 stars for "Self-Titled".
Wild Beasts
3/5
I liked the intro of the first track.
That's as good as it gets.
No-one knows why "Two Dancers" made it on the list.
It's too average to be a must listen.
At least "Two Dancers" isn't as bad as others say.
3 stars for "Two Dancers".
Björk
3/5
It should be clear that I hate accapela music.
This album is almost without instrumentation.
That means "Medulla" is occasionally unbearable.
However, there are some good songs on it.
For example, "Desired Constellations".
3 stars for "Medulla".
Screaming Trees
3/5
I liked this album.
The songs aren't much different from tracks by other alt-rock bands.
Van Conner steals the show with his guitar solos.
I would've entirely forgotten about "Dust" otherwise.
A cool conclusion to the week.
3 stars for "Dust".
ABBA
4/5
This was ABBA's last album until recent times.
"The Vistors" doesn't have a lot of hits.
However, it does have some of ABBA's best work.
Those songs surpass a few of ABBA's most famous tracks.
I hope I can keep my great album streak up,
4 stars for "The Visitors".
The Blue Nile
2/5
Oh great, more '80s crap.
How many of these albums are there?
Those new-wave albums seem to take up 10% of the list.
"Easter Parade" is the only good song.
It should've been at the end of the album.
2 stars for "A Walk Across the Rooftops".
The War On Drugs
3/5
At least this album's better than that '80s record I reviewed yesterday.
There were a few boring songs on "Lost in the Dream".
I loved "Red Eyes"; it deserves its fame.
The song's guitar riff in the middle is simply perfect.
The other tracks aren't worth mentioning.
3 stars for "Lost in the Dream".
The Killers
5/5
This album holds a special place in my heart.
"Hot Fuss" was the first album I fell in love with instantly.
"Mr Brightside" is overrated, and it overshadows the other tracks.
Today, I was introduced to a song that wasn't on the "Hot Fuss" UK tracklist.
It's a shame that the Killers never made an album like their debut again.
5 stars for "Hot Fuss".
Beth Orton
3/5
Another album off the 1001 record-long bucket list.
"Central Reservation" started great, but declined when it went more acoustic.
My favourite track is the opening song "Stolen Car".
The following two songs, after "Stolen Car", also rule.
A nice album to end the week.
3 stars for "Central Reservation".
Mike Ladd
3/5
One of the more obscure albums on the list.
Half of "Welcome to the Afterfuture" is rap, with the other half being more experimental.
The songs I enjoyed the most are "Planet 10" and "The Animist".
Those tracks have some great instrumentation.
If the 10-minute track had more lyrics, I would've enjoyed it more.
3 stars for "Welcome to the Afterfuture".
Grant Lee Buffalo
3/5
There's nothing but radio-friendly tunes.
I'm surprised none of them became hits.
The title track, "Fuzzy", is the closest to one.
"The Shining Hour" and "America Snoring" are my favourites from "Fuzzy".
Unfortunately, most songs from the album don't come close to those two.
3 stars for "Fuzzy".
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
I almost forgot to listen to this album today.
Some nice tracks can be found on "The Rising", like "Mary's Place", the best on the album.
There's a song called "Countin' On a Miracle" that begs to be on a Dad Rock CD.
Over half of the songs on "The Rising" are uninteresting and forgettable.
Man, I'm having a slew of mediocre albums this week.
3 stars for "The Rising".
Emmylou Harris
3/5
I've remembered this album today, now I'm back on track.
"Pieces in the Sky" features several soothing songs, including "Before Believing".
It was fine for its time during the mid-1970s.
Harris sounds similar to Dolly Parton when she sings.
I wish that I would have a mind-blowing album tonight.
3 stars for "Pieces in the Sky".
The Charlatans
3/5
That's not how you do Oasis. (It seems that The Charlatans predate Oasis, strange.)
The Charlatans even look like clones of the Gallagher brothers.
I guess they capitalised on the popularity of Oasis and took their sound.
At least the songs sound alright, avoiding a low rating.
"One to Another" is my favourite song from the album.
3 stars for "Tellin' Stories".
The Jesus And Mary Chain
3/5
Many brilliant albums would not exist without "Psychocandy".
The Jesus and Mary Chain did something almost unheard of in the music industry.
They used guitar feedback and noise to create a unique sound.
Without it, "Psychocandy" would be just another '80s album.
However, it's not a great record.
3 stars for "Psychocandy".
The Divine Comedy
3/5
Exactly what it says on the tin.
"ASAAL" begins with a jolly tune called "In Pursuit of Happiness".
The album then gets progressively boring.
There's nothing but inoffensive ballads.
At least I didn't hate it.
3 stars for "A Short Album About Love".
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
2/5
40 minutes of bluegrass is fine, but 2 hours is ridiculous.
This album begins with 5 or so horrible tracks, before slowly improving.
It felt like I was stuck in the Deep South.
I kinda liked the 2nd disc of "Will the Circle be Unbroken?".
Let this be the last long album I'll review in a long time.
2 stars for "Will the Circle be Unbroken?".
Minutemen
3/5
I can't believe I've got another double album this week.
Luckily, "DNotD" is actually better than that country album.
The songs are very short, with the longest being 3 minutes long.
My favourite was "History Lesson Part 2".
Unfortunately, the length of the album and the subpar songs prevent it from being a classic.
3 stars for "Double Nickels on the Dime".
Kelela
2/5
Modern R&B isn't my cup of tea.
I prefer classic R&B and soul artists like Isaac Hayes.
The first song, "Frontline", was actually good.
I also think "Altadina" was a nice song.
Every song after "Frontline" and before "Altadina" was average at best.
2 stars for "Take Me Apart".
The Beau Brummels
2/5
The best thing about this album is that it's short.
At least "Triangle" isn't so bad that it gets a single star.
It sounds like every other 1967 album.
Why is "Triangle" on the list?
What a bad start to the week.
2 stars for "Triangle".
Aerosmith
1/5
Aerosmith only made two good songs; one of them is not on this album.
That song is called "Dream On", a classic song.
The other one happens to be "Janie's Got a Gun".
I hate Aerosmith and 80s glam rock with a passion.
When will I get an actual good album for once?
1 star for "Pump".
Rocket From The Crypt
3/5
Listening to Aerosmith yesterday almost made me lose faith in the list.
I hope I won't have to listen to them for the time being.
Anyway, this album crushes Aerosmith's discography.
I'm instantly in love with "On a Rope", the best song on "Scream, Dracula, Scream".
The album isn't anything special, to be honest.
3 stars for "Scream, Dracula, Scream".
Gotan Project
1/5
"La Revancha del Tango" has an okay start with "Queremos Paz".
The rest of the tracks are just mind-numbingly boring.
50 minutes of repetitive torture I had to endure,
I have no idea why "La Revancha del Tango" is on the list.
Two real stinkers in a single week, ridiculous.
1 star for "La Revancha del Tango"
Ravi Shankar
3/5
This album is an interesting curiosity.
The first track was just Shankur giving the audience a music lesson.
I can see how "The Sounds of India" influenced George Harrison.
After a few nasty albums, this one makes a nice change.
A lovely conclusion to the week.
3 stars for "The Sounds of India".
Jerry Lee Lewis
3/5
I find it strange that live albums are allowed on this list.
I'm glad "Live at the Star Club, Hamburg" is pretty good.
Sometimes, you get live albums that are duds.
Even though this album is just rock n' roll, Jerry Lee Lewis's energy makes it worthwhile.
This performance would've been better in person.
3 stars for "Live at the Star Club, Hamburg".
The Young Gods
2/5
How is this album on the list?
Only the accompaniments save "L'Eau Rouge" from being irredeemably terrible.
The singer's voice sounds so off-putting.
Why didn't the Young Gods make this album without vocals?
You're better off listening to Godflesh.
2 stars for "L'Eau Rouge".
Steely Dan
3/5
It's actually better than the Young Gods album.
"Aja" has some ordinary '70s rock tunes.
There's nothing to write home about.
I believe this is the 2nd Steely Dan album I've listened to.
I wonder when I'll get an album that's 4 stars and up.
3 stars for "Aja".
Curtis Mayfield
4/5
Looks like I've found my long-awaited 4-star album.
It's been weeks since I had one.
"TNPLAT" is an easy listen, with no duds.
The bookends of the album are the best tracks.
My only complaint is that the songs sound the same.
4 stars for "There's No Place Like America Today".
