Reviews (page 11 of 14)

XYZ var lige et throwback til 8./9. Klasse og Guitar Hero 2

Not for me, but well done

Never got into Rush but looking forward to a listen. Golly, they certainly have crammed a lot of notes into this. I 'get' it, Tom Sawyer is musically really interesting. Actually, it all is interesting, but it just doesn't hit the spot for me. Can see why some would love it.

3☆/5 09.07.2024

от подобного есть ощущение, что мне надо было родиться лет на 30 пораньше, чтобы реально понравилось. возможно, если бы мой отец не был фанатом тэйлор свифт, ему бы понравилось. но имеем, что имеем, 5/10

Classic Rush. Classic rock radio alas played these songs to death.

Rock, 1981 -> 3

3/5 Some cool guitars in here.

Very good

Tom Sawyer rules, the prog stuff is also cool, I was just hoping for more Tom Sawyer tier stuff and didn’t get there.

Shout out to Limelight

One of the weirder discoveries from this process is that i weirdly dont hate this cheesy wholesome stadium rock and ive really enjoyed the previous rush albums. This one was a bit too proggy for me but was still vaguely enjoyable.

Pretty good, will relisten. nothing special about it though 3/5

It was good, would listen to it again

progg, ekkert sérstakt.

Finde ich teilweise gut, Rest ist Gedudel. Habe etwas Mühe mit Rush.Trotzdem:Ganz ok ***1/2

Didn’t listen to whole album. Wish I knew the significance of the album aside from its hit status. Hits don’t make a great album in my mind.

Rush. One of the most musically talented bands that just happens to make some of the least interesting music.

Never heard of rush, but I apparently know one song of theirs some red album that is. I read that one review about how Rush destroyed prog rock and that's gonna stay in my mind for a long time, 80s were a bad time for such music apparently. Well because of that I have low expectations, but also I do like hard rock if it's unique in some ways. Though if the voice is bad(as that person said) and production sucks, I'll simply won't like it, for example, Van Halen is hard rock, but the songs were catchy and asking for a second listen. Anyway I hope this won't be as bad as I already think it is. First song, their most listened song, so it must be good. Ooh alien spacey start. Great lyrical delivery already. Now rock came in. I don't like his voice tbh, it's not suitable for rock I think. He's kind of whining, it's giving clown of The Crown. I do love the way he talks fast. This futuristic instrumental break is quite uncalled for, but I like it. Electric guitar is not at its best to me. Getting weirdly boring somehow. The uniqueness of his voice is kind of intriguingly satisfying. The song slowly faded away. Not impressed, but I hope it gets better. Second song, same kind of future sounds again. It's slower for now. Liking the beat it's kind of nostalgic. He has a county voice I think, a rather annoying at some point, idk why I keep talking about it tbh. Sonically it's basic. The lyrical delivery is edging me because it starts good and ends too badly. Guitar is progressing. He's in both of my ears now, basically sounds different after the break. Idk if I like this, it's not fully bad, just not IT. It's tooooo long too, I wish it sounded at least better or had a plot twist as in song's movement changed. His voice is distant and I hate that. It's outro now finally. First song had this little goodness in it, this just sounds like a mix of common and overused production. Third song, loved the start, unexpected. Kind of angry instrumentals, love that too. No lyrics? I was gonna say his voice will ruin it and now it can't, HA. Not a good direction they took with this one. They must have had a bad lyricist, seven songs and one is already instrumental. I liked this clown like sound, now they're fighting between ears. It was fast paced for a moment. Back to how it was before. Ooooh drums did a little dilly dallying. Electric guitar came into play, sounded the best when only it was playing. Liked that it wasn't all the same throughout the song. Outro is coming and before that it has the worst part of the song on repeat, changed it into even worse instrumentalisation. Ooh dramatic ending love it. 4th song, basic start and same way it continued. Sorry again about his voice, it must be a grower or I can't take it sometimes. There are songs that make me feel like, I want to sing them, this guy has no emotion hence I'll find no joy singing along with him yk. Honestly tho when do I listen to this, it's not sad, happy, energetic... Do I just try to dance to it, probably that's the solution. Don't get me wrong tho, I love this genre, this guy just ain't hitting it. Chorus had a melancholic delivery almost, but an overall bad one, might be catchy on the second listen. Pretty boring if I had to sum it up, might be a grower. 5th song, AAAAAH 11 MINUTES? Future like sounds for now. Gonna be a long time before the beat hits I assume. It's slowly kicking in tho. Slightly more use of instrumentals. It doesn't even sound good, I hate songs that need second listen to see its goodness. Like not expecting what comes next is weirdly off-putting right now, but knowing that after this there's a good part would be relieving. It's dramatic now almost, would suit an action scene. Veeery bad guitar use, nevermind I find it catchy now. I'm slowly liking this, oh a beat change. I wish he didn't start singing UGHHH I HATE THIS VOICE. That guitar part is very good now, like I get it get it. There's three in the group, can't the other ones sing sometimes, ik that's not how it works, but I need smth different. I'll get used to it... It sounds too good sonically to have this guy on it vocally. Future sounds came back. That previous dramatic sonical part and then my favourite guitar play. Are they seriously doing the same thin.. he sings again? There was no need we're so close to the end. Electric guitar is having a trouble in a good way, oooh it just got better, one of the coolest outr.. it wasn't an outro apparently, since his voice came in. Ended quite miserably if you ask me. Bell sounds at the end. 6th song, spooky start. I LIKE THE NAME. The bells on the right, the screaming, the dramatic drums. The witchy bells GOD I LOVE THIS. I feel like a witch waiting to kill all those people trying to kill me. EWWWW HIS VOICE, HONESTLY FUCK OFF. It had such a potential, and now there's this basic ass fucking rock playing instead of the witchy sounds they've had. AAAAAH I HATE YOU RUSH WTF IS THIS, WHAT ARE THEY DOING, NO. This is not the witch hunt song I was playing 2 minutes ago. Sonically it's kinda better now, but there's also his voice, so it's well balanced out(hate it). I'm just gonna add this song and only play the first 1 minute of it, suck it Rush, and shame on you for ruining this song. The ending has organ in it I think, so kinda better. 7th song, catchy start, nevermind the rock ruined it. They have this future like production which they ruin it by this basic ass guitar and whatever other instruments are bad use, not even talking about how much the voice ruins it. Oh finally a good lyrical delivery from him, it was connected to the sonical part and that made it better. Is this permanent wave I can't tell, I have never seen a catchy chorus in it, it's just this same flow that once in a while barely changes. Ooooh the instrumental break is quite different from what they've done before, god he started singing, and he's saying the same thing, just stfu. Idk if I actually don't like this voice or it's a principle now. I need time to let it grow on me I hopefully think. Song faded away miserably. Welp, I'm not really sure how to rate this. The voice ruined every(except one) song. If that part was good I'd rate it 4, but I shall not. Sonically it was well different, though it was also very boring at some points. If I could rate only the instruments, it would be 4 at least, but that voice, ugh that voice. I could forget about that and just be like it doesn't exist, no that would be wrong. I'm rating this 3. They had a good chance with the witch hunt song and ruined the fuck out of it, other's just sounded good, nothing special, though I did added some of them in my playlist. Still I didn't have high expectations and therefore the low ones were met, I do hope their other albums sound better, if they are here even.

It's not bad. I can see why people who really like Rush like them though. They have a distinct feel.

It's a strong album, Tom Sawyer and red barchetta are both classics but we prefer permanent waves by a fair margin.

It's cool I guess, just not my style and Geddy's voice is still grating.

# 280 : They've done a pretty decent job. I think Its OK, I could listen to it, some of the songs are pretty iconic and everyone knows all the words. Prog Rock at its (almost) best! Fave Track : Tom Sawyer

Great album but Rush isn't my thing

love Limelight and Tom Sawyer, never really got into their deep catalog

It was a classic 80s album

I don't like much 80s music but at least Rush is something different. Cheesy as hell, for sure, but cool intricate music that doesn't sound like the other tripe of the era is worth at least three stars.

My only exposure to Rush was from the movie, “I love you Man” with Paul Rudd. His character was OBSESSED with Rush. An interesting first listen.

Yeh 3/5

A bit too old sounding, not as good as led zep

Love the music, but unfortunately not the voice.

These guys fucking rip - I don’t think they get enough recognition. Good listen.

No notes. Rush being Rush.

It was fine enough

OK album. I’ll never be a huge Rush fan and don’t really connect with them. This album is still fun and interesting. “Limelight” is the standout song for me. ***

This album made no lasting impression on me unfortunately, forgot I had listened to it when I was about to write this review. I think they have a cool sound, but the songs are not really sticking somehow. Maybe need to listen to it more, not sure.

The second Rush album on this list and this one was way better than "2112". Both "Tom Sawyer" and "Limelight" stand out as really good tracks. The rest is ok but the endless solos are really not my jam. Still an ok listen but not really for me.

Solid dad rock

Not a devoted Rush fan, But I applaud those loyal faithful to the band. They are devoted. I really like Red Barracudachetta. Kneel Pert was a great drummer and a rock god.

Quintessential Rush. I never noticed how similar the songs sound on this album. Tom Sawyer was a GenX staple and Limelight is in constant rotation on classic radio. Listening to Moving Pictures made me connect the dots of Rush’s influence on bands that followed. By the third track I was hearing Queensryche. Probably the best album by Rush.

first song, Tom Sawyer: electronic feel, futuristic vibe with the synth and other weird things, guitar aint bad, drums cool. Second song Red barchett: starts with a feeling like night time, but jumps into a bit more of a jump to it. definetly 80s vibes (breakfast club and the like). third song, YYz: Completly different to the previous stuff, reminds me of iron maiden how quick they glide along the notes feels like a different band. definetly heard this before on a bass thing or something because of how difficult it is. I have its the guy that was rejected by metallica! It might not be actually. An interesting note about this song is its arrangment is around the YYZ in morse code, some notes quick others faster. This can be seen in the offical video. Amazing piece honestly. Fourth song Limelight: Still completely different then the first two songs, continuing on with the jump feel that they created in YYZ. It does seem to be slowing down fifth song, the camera eye : interesting synth to begin with reminds me of ducks. A lot of hints towards tech. -------- overal: very interesting vibe, interesting people that are connected to this band. the band was marginalized, there song YYZ for best instrumental lost to the police! 1982. quite different and creative, intricate and artistic 6/10 (first day need a comparison idk)

Neil Pert is a god. Otherwise there some good stuff but I never was really ever sold on rush.

Surprisingly good, more jam-band than I thought

Incredibly skilled musicians with fervent fans. That being said I have never cared much for their music. Most of the tunes sound remarkably similar to me. I did like the instrumental track and Limelight

I mean… I wish I were cool enough (aka knew anything about the technical side of music) to understand how amazing this is. I liked it just fine, but from what I understand it’s incredible if you actually understand music. Lucky nerds! xo

Tom Sawyer: I think one of the great things about Neil Peart is that he does SO MUCH work, but it never sounds like too much Red Barchetta: This just sounds like a generic Rush song. Good, but this is not a track I'd specifically seek out to listen to YYZ: So, this is supposed to be some sort of drum masterpiece, I think. I like this song, but specifically listening to the drum part, this just sounds like everything else Neil does. That's not to say Neil's not special (because I think he really is), but more to say I don't see why this stands out as something different to other people. Maybe id understand if I was a drummer? Limelight: such a slick opening riff. I have always like the strategic paises in songs, and I think this song is a great example. I appreciate Geddy telling a story about life in the public eye from the perspective of both gratitude and annoyance. Fun imaging on the drums at the end of the track. Kudos to the engineer there The Camera Eye: pretty meh. Overly long Witch Hunt: Not bad. Also meh Vital Signs: really fun opening synth riff. I quite liked this song. Very fun. I had never heard this before. It's one I'd go back and listen to just like Tom Sawyer. I liked this album.

Tom Sawyer --> classic banger. YYZ has a lot of funk influence, while other tracks are much more metal leaning. Tom Sawyer, YYZ standouts, the rest is okay.

Prettty cook

Fine guitar masturbation. Gets a little boring but it does have some nice melodies

It's fine. I like Tom Sawyer but it's still prog rock and gets a bit self-indulged at times. It's fine though 3.5/5

Blends into the background

Prima album, kende Tom Sawyer van South Park volgens mij. Verder greep het me niet zo maar prima

First time listening. Top three tracks: 1. YYZ 2. Limelight 3. Tom Sawyer

Disco de prog que no me gusta, tanto cosa rara

I Like

Muzikaal best okay, maar de zang vind ik niets.

YYZ is great, but the rest just feels like fairly bland prog rock.

A decent mixed bag. At its best, it has some great proggy goodness; at its worst, it's just generic 80's dad rock. Best Song: YYZ Worst Song: Limelight Rush's Favorite Time Signature: 7/4 Album Score: 6/10

This album is moving 1970’s prog/rock into the 80s. Not bad, but not exceptional.

mal wieder was vernünftiges

The vocals are pretty terrible, but the instrumentals are awesome.

Rush are another band that I feel like I hear mentioned a lot but I’ve never actually listened to them… until now. The vocals don’t bother me as much as some of the reviews I skimmed through, and I actually quite like their sound! Maybe it’s just this one off album but I enjoyed having this on. But I’ll wait for further Rush albums to emerge before making the call on actually actively listening to them

I liked it but nothing stood out that much. I support Canadians though. Favourites: yyz (Toronto mentioned 🗣️) also I like instrumentals (when men keep their mouths shut), limelight, the camera eye. High 3/5

Okkkkk some Canadian representation. I liked YYZ (Toronto mention), Limelight, and The Camera Eye but I wasn't like super wowed by the album or anything. Overall, pretty average and there were some enjoyable tunes throughout. 3, I just didn't feel like anything really spoke to me or stood out and caught my attention

Ok, but relatively plain metal, Europe like

It sounded okay, didn’t really mind any of it but didn’t connect with any of it.

It's Rush. Not sure what else to say. 80's band through and through. Nostalgia for some but not likely to find its way into my playlist.

I love Tom Sawyer and didn’t know much about other Rush songs. It was great to hear some, but I could not listen to the whole album!

I just learned that Geddy Lee's instagram handle is @GeddyImages This was somehow both more and less cheesy than I was expecting based on only knowing Tom Sawyer/limited other Rush knowledge. YYZ made me want to play Mario Kart.

Great musically, but just for the life of me can't get over Geddy's voice...

prog chavoruco

Too heavy on the synth, gaddy has one of the worst voices to ever ruin a microphone

All the world's indeed a stage And we are merely players Performers and portrayers Each another's audience Outside the gilded cage 3.5

I am not a big Rush fan, but the album has power! Classic album 3.5/5

I can’t think of a stronger hard rock opener than the classic mega-hit “Tom Sawyer”, and 80s Rush is all right sometimes, but you know what, for me nothing touches the duo of A Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres. I guess I’m bringing this up because whenever you mention Rush, someone immediately mentions “Tom Sawyer”. Yeah, ok. That’s a great song. But if when I say Rush you don’t immediately think “Cygnus”, you and I are hearing different things.

rock 'n' roll rollercoaster built by mad scientists with a sense of humor, leaving you screaming for more while pondering the meaning of life

Very iconic 80s sound with theatrical chords and progressions. The vocals are tinny and vibrant, naturally melancholic sounding. Decent listen.

Tom Sawyer & Limelight are the hits. YYZ was a fun instrumental discovery. Didn't care for the rest of the album but it was okayish.

This was fine, some good classics on it. Not a lover or hater of Rush, and the same goes for this album.

not a huge rush fan but tom sawyer is a classic and there werw a few other solid songs on this one

Un par de temazos, pero no me entusiasman tanto como otros de este estilo.

Moving Pictures Things I know about Rush: - They’re Canadian - The song Tom Sawyer as it features so much in I Love You man - People cream themselves about Neil Peart’s drumming Things I know after listening to Moving Pictures - they’re Canadian - Tom Sawyer is an enjoyably fun prog rock pop song - Neil Peart clearly is a very good drummer, but he is very very busy I did like lots of bits if this but not sure I’m totally convinced by a whole album if it. Some of the guitar lines and synth parts were good. Limelight and Tom Sawyer are very good songs and stand out, while overall the rest does get up it’s own musical virtuosity bumhole a bit too much and his voice is quite annoying, which also makes the vocal melodies a bit tough to hang on to. It’s kind of fun though if you don’t take it too seriously. I think that’s why I don’t mind a lot of these prog records - I find the musicians seriousness quite amusing and subsequently I enjoy the music more. However I’m not sure that’s a basis for actually liking it. Not sure where to rate, I think I enjoyed more than Yes, but not sure if I would investigate much further. Maybe as I didn’t listen to it as much as I would have liked I’ll plump for a 3? ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Surprisingly better than I expected. I still hate Tom Sawyer, but that is classic rock radio's fault more than Rush's.

not bad, but they did better

Listened to it running, and that is exactly the right place for it. It's about the right level of prog for me, but still a bit pretentious at times. All in all, pretty good, but I'm unlikely to go back to it.

Never listened to this album fully through, but I'm familiar with many of the tracks. \"Tom Sawyer\" and \"Limelight\" were everywhere in the '80s. I've nevber been a big Rush fan, but I understand why people love them - they were innovative and creative and their music is very distinctive. I'm between 3 and 4 stars - I could give it 4, because I think it's impressive, but for me personally, I won't choose to listen to it, so it gets a 3.

This album fucks. bro was shreddingggggg on YYZ and Geddy Lee's vocals don't bother me like they might some people

Besser als befürchtet. Z.T. eingängige Riffs, aber nicht meins.

Literally can’t remember it and it was only yesterday. I remember liking it at the time but other than that, nothing.

I generally like a bit of prog rock, but this does nothing for me. Don't hate it but equally don't really like it either.

Two stars plus 1 for Tom Sawyer. Rush is so over the top

Their earlier stuff is better. I prefer their instrumentals.

Another car listen . This was a bit boring to me, some songs were fine but tbh didn’t fully get the essence bc I was absorbing the Texas.

It was fine, just didn’t inspire me 6/10

I can definitely see the appeal here. This is one of the albums that’s really tough to rate for me, because I think it’s objectively good music, but isn’t something I’m super into. 6/10

Meh. I know they’re super talented but not my bag.

Long songs that all kind of sound the same

Couple classics, but as an album pretty rough. Some of the technical work in the "other" songs is good and very much foundational prog, but it's uneven.

Joyfully fun and nerdy rock

Not a big fan of Rush but I’m not gonna sit here and pretend Limelight isn’t a great song. Overall though this isn’t for me and I don’t have much to say about it. High 3.

I thought it would be a fun listen with the classics, one of the best drummers who ever lived and a reputation for technical nerd music. But I was bored nearly the entire time. Maybe bc it's played out. The b sides while occasionally interesting were mostly anodyne and repetitive. I'm worried a lot of classic music will strike me this way bc even though they are beloved top tier musicians I still don't really like it.

It really strikes me what a beautiful voice the vocalist, Geddy Lee, has. I think it's an underrated thing with 80's rock bands in general. Rush, The Who, Journey - the vocals sound so similar, and the vocalists are so distinct that it cuts through in a noticeable (good) way.

Enjoyed the last half

If you downpitch the music so that Geddy Lee's voice sounds "normal", Rush sounds a whole lot like so many other rock bands from the 70s/80s. I don't like many of those bands. I kind of like Rush. I wouldn't say I like Geddy Lee's voice, but for some reason it's the key to me liking this band at all.

The opening one-two punch of "Tom Sawyer" and "Red Barchetta" is as strong as anything in classic rock. Those are Rush at their tightest, most focused, and accessible. Both have their eye rolling moments (a better, mannish time?) Of Geddy Lee excess, but both weave such enchanting atmospheres that all sins are easily forgivable. "Red Barchetta" in particular paints such a rich, water colored picture of youthful passion that even I'm drooling over muscle cars. "Tom Sawyer" is another song that resists going stale despite endless replays and mainstream exposure. It's still a sublime piece of Prog. "Limelight" is really the only other song that hits its mark. It's another didactic call to arms for artists, demanding purity, dignity and Valor. It's still a great song, and a better example of Geddy's writing. "YYZ" has not aged well and is a pretty wane instrumental piece. "Witch Hunt" is boiler plate Big Brother stuff, and "Vital Signs" is pleasant but forgettable. Perhaps "The Camera Eye" deserves closer inspection of its lyrics, but I don't feel like wading through its 10 minute runtime. Something about the cameras role in history or something. I dunno. Good album with 2 or 3 of Rush's best songs makes this an easy 3.

Tim Sawyer and Limelight are iconic songs and I dig them. The rest of the album…..meh. I respect and appreciate that Rush are incredible and talented musicians and are amazing at what they do. I just don’t dig what they do. It’s not for me. I’m struggling over whether or not my respect for their talent is worthy to upgrade them to a 3rd star. I don’t think it’s bad music.

Rush is truly a wild band. No one else like them. Virtuosity everywhere. Tough to knock it too much even if it's not for you.

Idk instrumentals are good, but I don't love the lyrics prob won't ever listen to again

Inject “Tom Sawyer” and “Limelight” into my veins and let me go quietly into the night on account of their bountiful rock. Unquestionably this oozes with musical talent. But if you understand the time signatures on this album, you are a nerd. Too difficult to adequately head bang to this, and at times it feels like experimental rock for its own sake. GOOD NOT GREAT

Very familiar with this one. I don't think I ever listened to this one all the way through but I've heard most of these songs. "Camera Eye" and "Witch Hunt" are the only two I didn't know.

A lot of classics but the guys voice was annoying after a few songs.

Hard to rate this one since I have history with it. Better in headphones. Still love the syncopation.

Always been a band I respect more than I like. Loads of friends are mad into them, don't mind them being on, but I wouldn't put it on myself

I like this album but got old to me a long time ago

YYZ goes hard. Lots of fun guitar so far. 10+ minute song lfg. Don’t love the singing, but it’s iconic. Neat!

6/10 Some cool tunes Good riffs

Overall I enjoyed the production, it has a prog feel with 80’s production. The one problem I have with the album is Getey Lee’s vocals. When he’s more reserved I enjoy it, but when he starts going overboard with the vocals that’s when it loses me

Good album

When I was a younger man, learning how to play the drums, our reluctant bassist was completely infatuated with Rush. The bassist would much rather have been on guitar, shredding Tom Sawyer than whatever we were covering at the time. He was incredibly annoying. Turned me off of Rush for *years*. As an older man, listening to rush with fresh ears, perhaps it wasn't the bassist who was annoying. Perhaps we were annoyed by Rush all along. These guys are clearly stellar musicians. It's just not my taste.

Very strong start but a steep decline

Apart from the excellent Tom Sawyer, I'm not at all familiar with this album, and I wasn't sure why! After all, I was heavily into the previous albums, 'A Farewell to Kings', 'Hemispheres' and 'Permanent Waves'. So why not this? All the essential Rush ingredients are there, from Geddy Lee's distinctive vocals and bass holding everything together to Alex Leifson's inventive guitar, not to mention Neil Peart's outstanding drums. However, after giving it some thought, I realised that it was in 1980/81, just between the release of 'Moving Pictures' and it's predecessor, that I discovered Killing Joke and Bauhaus and, I would imagine, became very dismissive of all of my former musical tastes In a sort of cultural scorched earth policy. So, it's because of my unfamiliarity with the album that I can only give it 3*. Would I give it another spin? Probably, but don't hold your breath!

Eh, not really my thing. Not bad though.

Quite good.

Annoying

I kinda zoned out listening to it in the car. I think limelight was my favorite song, but a couple of them were a little strange. Not a bad album, but wouldn’t say it was amazing

Some high quality songs in here. Really only recognized Tom Sawyer but found myself enjoying the instruments. Wasn’t too familiar with Rush at all.

Handgemacht, solide. Packt mich trotzdem nicht so richtig! 3/5

Very enjoyable!

classic rock ain't my thing. some cool guitar work though

Like much of Rush, this is overwrought and overlong. Technically a masterpiece, but it doesn't appeal.

my favorite track was the instrumental one, called Y2K or some shit. not that I don't like the vocals, that song just went so hard and for what reason

Haven’t heard of this. New Wave Rock from 1981. Was alright, good and bad bits. 3.

It's rush. Pretty much exactly what I expected, couple of classic hits

Slappin the bass man! Actually rush kinda sucks except a few songs.

Not bad but also nothing that would justify puting it on this list.

I think the only one I've heard on this album is Tom Sawyer but we'll see. Oh I lied, Limelight i've def heard too. The camera eye is almost 11 min long! Meh it was alright. 3 stars

Some good songs. You can tell they are incredibly good musicians but the sound just isn't quite for me.

Good at what it is

Not a big Rush person but I’m always happy to see Canada represented on the list.

This was actually a fairly enjoyable album. Many of the songs were long, too long, but they were good. Tom Sawyer is a banger. Witch Hunt is very good (in a different way). I appreciated the mix of instrumentals. I wasn’t thrilled by the singing, and the lyrics were mid. But over good. 3.5

3.42. Some great tracks, mostly mediocre.

I can appreciate that this is probably a great album loved by many. But I did not love it.

Into it. How can you not love Tom Sawyer. Less songs than I thought but they are all really long

Album has a quintessential 70's rock sound to it, but also has some very interesting electronic elements in the beginning(so far) maybe considering it is an early 80's album this makes somewhat sense. Slow start with some good but not too interesting songs in the beginning but picks up around the song YYZ, the instrumentals are more unique and little bit experimental? However it kind of goes back to classic 70s rock after it.

gostei do instrumental e os solos de guitarra estavam bué bons mas o tipo de música não é para mim e a voz do gajo era annoying… mas overall um bom álbum para quem gosta de rock

Kändes jammigt. Lite mkt effekter. Nice trummor och bas. Sången sådär. Väldigt varierade låtar. Lite längre låtar än jag är van. Tänkte på Queen, Mars Volta, Foo Fighters. Dom hade flageoletter i några låtar. Rätt gött! 6/10

Familiar with Tom Sawyer.

Ok album. Drums are good! Go Canada!!

Another album with a strong opening track. Tom Sawyer was the only track I knew going in and it didn’t disappoint. Also liked red barchetta, even though it was a long track, which I usually don't like. Limelight is also a song which I might listen to again.

70s math, prog rock. In theory I should like it but I just can’t get into it.

Approx. 40 minutes. Enjoyed the high energy sound, drums, and vocals. Standout song - "Tom Sawyer". (7/10)

I used to love rush. i’ve always loved Tom Sawyer and still do. But, the music is a bit too hard now for these 63-year-old ears. But their music is amazing.

Lots of drums, clearly talented musicians. Vocals not my favorite, definite 80's vibe.

not so down with this... it's not awful but i don't really wanna hear it again

It grew on me after a couple listens, it definitely has its moments instrumentally and lyrically! Sounds like something that would be on the radio in gym class- I wouldn't be upset about it but I wouldn't actively listen.

prog rock

80s rock… a little musical-ish, but not bad

Interessantes Album beim zweiten Hören. Aber warm werde ich trotzdem nicht richtig

01) Tom Sawyer - 6,5 02) Red Barchetta - 6,5 03) YYZ - 6,5 04) Limelight - 6,5 05) The Camera Eye - 6,5 06) Witch Hunt - 6,5 07) Vital Signs - 6,5 TOTAL: 6,50 (65/100) I mean, every song sounds the same. His voice is... special. Unfortunately, I wouldn't say in a good way. Maybe song #3 is the best, because of the before mentioned reasons? :-P

Enjoyed listening to it

I'm not a huge fan of Geddy Lee's voice (though I don't hate it either), so the instrumental YYZ is the best track for me. Second best morse code rythymed song (after the theme tune to Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em).

It's quite an accomplishment to make an album like this. That being said, it doesn't speak to me at all. I don't hate it. I appreciate the effort. There's good parts. The voice is probably an acquired taste that I haven't acquired yet. Favorite song: YYZ

не шизика, которую я ждал, но на выходе тож норм

A Prog Guy friend said this one is the best entry point into Rush. I can see it. Being a Canadian, I’ve heard their singles a million times on the radio, but associated their overall work with long, drawn out epic type prog. Was delighted this was 40 minutes long and all but one song was to-the-point. Still not exactly my thing, but a fun listen. Great bass stuff, too.

Admittedly, this is not really mu cup of tea. But I do really like the full on prog elements on this music. It feels like a step beyond Led Zeppelin, while opening the door for 80s metal and prog rock. Though, I do feel like this sound gets appropriated and is not fully appreciated. When listening in this avenue, you can really see and feel the vision of the artist and what they were going for. It works.

this album is kinda lame 80s Placebo

i like yyz but idk it’s ok it’s not that memorable to me

The first 3 songs were strong and interesting to listen too. The back half of the album felt bland and several songs went on for too long. I’m not too fond of the lead singer’s voice and I found it annoying after several minutes.

All of the rush songs I know are on this

Ganz nett, aber nichts hängen geblieben. Wie leider so oft.

Despite a Standout in Witch Hunt, this album leans very heavily into instrumental work that just doesn't resonate with me.

I always find funny that Americans consider this iteration of Rush as "classic prog", for me (a European) their music was more of an "extremely technical power pop". However, it's very fine "extremely technical power pop". Neil Peart makes you want to drop everything out and learn playing drums like him. (I don't like numeric ratings, I just give 3 to anyone)

Good, but not my favorite

I was planning on giving this album 2 stars while I was listening. I felt the first few songs sounded the same. Then I listened to the last two songs on the album and they changed my mind. I was surprised that Rush's lyrics are deeper than I previously believed. I'm not a fan of the entire album, but there are a few standout songs.

I totally get why big prog rock fans would love this album and I respect that Rush is really good at the Proggy, spacey tunes. This is actually super great at times but Rush in a big serving for me is too rich, too much and I know this is unfair but 3 stars

Some talented musicians here, Peart a better drummer than lyricist, Lee a better bassist than singer. Despite this, you can see why their fans hold them close.

I'm a huge prog rock nerd and have an incredibly unpopular opinion: Rush is... not good. No, they don't suck but considering how good they are in many rankings I find them incredibly overrated. That goes for this album as well. 'Moving Pictures' is fine enough but when it comes to high nasal singers and complex musicality they are nothing compared to Jon Anderson and Yes. The album gets better later but it can't be saved from being medicore - especially considering that so many better releases came beforehand.

Added 4/7. Decent songs. Big arena sound for the most part. YYZ and Tom Sawyer are classics

Decent. Rating 3.

The music was quality, but I found the songs cheesy and kinda pretentious. I was already familiar with Tom Sawyer and YYZ thanks to Guitar Hero! It was alright but probably not something I would choose to listen to. Listens: 2 Fave Track: Witch Hunt Rating: 3

Couple classic songs. Good length to enjoy without over doing it.

So much pomp! So much circumstance. The length of these songs and the altitude of emotion and all of them was really just too much for me to bear. I see now, after all these years, where they got their name. They are alive! This is happening! So is that! And the other thing! All of it! Put all the levels up! Every line is building, every chorus is a climax. You can feel it in your veins. Can you imagine the exhaustion they must’ve felt at the end of the show? There’s no “Let’s go grab a quick bite.” More like get me to the hospital for IVs and some incantation‘s to the gods of rock ‘n’ roll to restore their glam prana. Canadians, amirite.

Fun to listen to and there’s some impressive drumming throughout! Solid rock and roll and I have naught but respect for the dudes. I was hoping to have my mind blown by one of the deeper cuts though and didn’t happen.

I enjoy rush but only a few songs

Thought it would be better. Coming out of that Spirit album into Tom Sawyer was a breath of fresh air, but the rest of the album is not as good as Tom Sawyer.

Better than I thought but not by much. I like some Rush songs but I’m pretty indifferent about them overall.

Nothing wrong with some good prog metal. Rush did some good prog metal.

listening to this and just thinking to myself "...what is so special about this?" do people think this is objectively good music? This does not fit my definition of objectively good. There's nothing really fascinating to me except for the fact that its prog in the 80s but like ok??? damn all prog rock sounds the same. I will say though, the opening track is good. And the little switchup on YYZ is decent also! Like this record its pretty decent its just uninteresting to me, and lacks overall depth that I crave in music. The second half of the record is 100% better than the first half, however A4 (Limelight) is by far my fav song. i also think this might be a slight grower but only SLIGHT. The closing track is also great and a wonderful way to end the album.

I always liked Tom Sawyer and had no clue it was co-written w one of the Max Webster dudes. Neil Peart's drumming is top shelf and highlighted on this album. They're a band playing three instrument rock / prog rock in the 80s and not adding anything new and interesting to the sound. I'm close to a plus 1 for Peart but Gary's consistently high pitched vocals take the bump off the table.

This is a definite step up from the hard rock/prog of the 2112 LP. The sound is more mature, and full for a trio, with minimal overdubbing. On some of Lifeson's guitar solos, Peart & Lee are jamming like freeform jazz musicians in the background. It's easy to see how they gained such loyal fans, especially among musicians. "Limelight" and "Tom Sawyer" are good 80s radio songs.

My first introduction to Rush was in the late 90's when I was a teenager and I was listening to a DJ Qbert mixtape and he was mixing and scratching Tom Sawyer. Became somewhat of a fan but never listened to a whole Rush album. Solid album, Neil Peart is a drumming god.

I've heard a lot about prog rock and Rush over the years, mostly bad, but this was my first time listening to them. And it wasn't bad! Dare I say it was mostly enjoyable! I don't necessarily think that I will re-listen to it but I wouldn't be opposed to hearing it again.

Pretty poor to be honest, no standout tracks.

It was a good vibe but I can't say it was memorable...

It's okay, but probably not something I will listen to often in the future.

Fajny progresywny roczek, trochę jakby z półki dream theater ale z mniejszym rozmachem

Intense ott 80s sounding rock

When it hits, damn. When it lags, it’s still worth it.

I get it. It's catchy, but just as forgettable. It's the third bite of a piece of cake..

Tom Sawyer is classic Rush, but Rush was never my thing

Can see why influential

Limelightttt

Nice album but not my style

Not my preferred style

I've never really cared for Rush, just wasn't my thing. Listening to this album didn't make me into a Rush convert, but I respect and appreciate the band a lot more than I did before.

YYZ is wel nice, interessante rythms 3.5

A bit shocked I liked this more than I thought I would. Lee’s voice is not my fave but it’s tolerable, and some of the tracks were listenable. Would prefer a heavier production and less synths. My ex is a bit of a Rush fanboy and he’s a musician who can’t enjoy a gig for scrutinising the musicianship, which says it all. Fave track is Witch Hunt by far

Surprising, enjoyed it much more than I thought

Old school rock, probably won't listen again but it was fine

This is one of those bands I had meant to listen to for a while. It's not ever going to be one of my favorites but I would be open to listening again if I'm in the right mood

Fun, not my favorite. Tom Sawyer was great.

Although I haven't got fully hooked, I respect it. They have something of a brilliance in their music. 3.5/5.

I think Rush has created masterpieces in individual songs. Here, I really enjoy Limelight, while Tom Sawyer has been overplayed to the point I don’t want to hear it for many years, probably (perhaps if I had some Cheeto dust to snort…). Much of the rest of this sounds like show off prog to me without actually going anywhere that interesting. I don’t connect with it.

Never been a fan of Rush, the singer’s voice turns me off. The album was alright though.

War immer vorsichtig mit Rush und komme auch jetzt nicht ganz hinter diese durchtechnisierte Musik, aber die Vocals sind echt interessant geworden und als Drummer machst halt Spaß Peart zuzuhören.

Fun. I didn't enjoy it as much as Paul Rudd does but it's good.

The songs I love, I still love. But I can see why people don't adore this album. I think for it to be a banger you have to already love Rush

The production is way too clean! There's a whole bunch of stuff I could like but it's way too polite. I'm betting that they'd sound much better live.

First half is great, maybe a 5,music for music nerds with some amazing stuff from Neal Peart. Sadly by the end I'd had enough of the vocals and I think, for now, this is a 3 for me.

harto guitarreo

It was pretty good, and then it just kept going.

Not a fan of geddy lee's voice. Excellent instrumentation but the vocals just kill the vibe for me

Better than I thought to be honest, I've never been a fan of Rush, but I did like this one

Expected hard rock noise, this was pleasant album with Kraftwerk-start n the Camera Eye (-:

This album is new to me. It makes me want to start working out, getting in shape, and rocking my body hard.

While side one rocks, side two slacks.

Ik kreeg er een beetje Supernatural heimwee van. Helaas staan op dit album alleen niet de nummers die ik ken.

tbh it’s like a dad music album. it’s got hints of warm version of synths from dawn fm. overall it’s a pretty ok 6/10

every song starts out super strong but goes on just a bit too long. edit!

Технически классно, но не цепляет, 6/10

Fair but going on here

The devotion to this band must be a North American thing. I liked a few tracks but overall the songs just blended together

B- Tom Sawyer - 4 Red Barchetta - 3 YYZ - 3 Limelight - 3 The Camera Eye - 3 Witch Hunt (Part III of Fear) - 3 Vital Signs - 3 So years ago I watched this Paul Rudd movie where he has no friends. He hires Jason Siegel to be his best friend. They’re only pojnt of bonding is that they like Tom Sawyer by Rush. Therefore, I added the song to my library and have been skipping it everytime it comes on. I was prepared to slap a 2 on that song and the album, but it was actually good. Hey, look at us. Who would’ve thought? Not me.

Lots of radio hits.

Sometimes the vocals are jarring but all around its a very good, but pretty basic album. The instrumentals do not miss. The first half of the album is almost perfect, and the latter half is pretty decent. Definitely a strong 3/5 is felt, almost a 4, but not just quite there. Favorites: Tom Sawyer / YYZ / Witch Hunt

Would be immeasurably better with a competent singer

I've just never been a Rush fan, though I get why people would like them and respect their musicianship. Unfortunately this listen didn't bring me any closer to being a fan but I didn't hate it, just won't be adding it to my regular rotation anytime soon. Standout Tracks: Tom Sawyer, Limelight

Its good, really like the guitar over all good song writing, the voice is not My fav but i love Alex lifeson 3.5/5

Another solo wu tang album that is magnificently produced and has excellent flows. I still think I like liquid swords more but the first like 5 songs on this are all bangers especially shaken dog, the champ, and . The sheer star power of both the features and the production are also insane and works as a great bridge between old school 90s rap and more melodic 00s stuff, back like that and it’s remix with Kanye come to mind the most.

YYZ is so good!!

good consistent album but none of the songs made me go wow

An odd one. Starts very 80s. Becomes increasingly prog. Ends very 80s.

Reminded me why I don't like prog rock. Well made but not my jam.

Sorta expected this to be weirder and bigger.

Hits are solid. Everything else kinda meh

Moving Pictures is the eighth album by Canadian rock band Rush. This progressive rock album was a critical and commercial success, almost topping the charts in both Canada and the US. It remains Rush's best-selling album in the US and has been certified 5 times platinum. I had heard of the band Rush before, but I don't think I could have picked out any of their songs until listening to this album. They made a great album here that focused on creating "radio-friendly" songs (shorter tracks) and I think it paid off. It's an awesome progressive rock album.

Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Red barchetta

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah it was really packed full of fulfilling vocals and guitar work, definitely worth revisiting Favourite song: Track 6 - Witch Hunt

Seems to be a clash on this between some really interesting and forward-thinking instrumental passages, and all the lame overblown tenets of classic rock we've come to expect. Those vocals, yeesh. I'd get into some cool syncopated rhythm and then be rudely interrupted by this insipid worm of a front person. That's a bit harsh but I wanted to use the term insipid worm. Two and a half. Fave track: Limelight

Proggy classic rock. 3/5

Kinda went by me without making an impression. It is ok, i guess.

Enjoyed a few parts of this but overall was a shade too classic prog for me. 'A' the band, who I loved as a wee nipper, were big Rush fans but I never bothered to seek Rush out. Not many similarities between the two. Guess we'll see if the next album is any better!

Prog Rock isn't really my thing, but I can appreciate that it is a pretty solid album.

I’m afraid this album confirms, rather than challenges, my thoughts about prog rock. That is, the musicianship is superb, the compositions incredibly clever, but the whole is somehow less than the sum of its parts when it comes to my enjoyment. 3*

Weird in a fun way, I might listen again

I really like Tom Sawyer, YYZ, and Limelight, but the other songs were different combinations of forgettable, boring and overlong.

Well it's very 80s innit.

Ian Fucking Rush

This has a classic 80s sound, I feel like people who really love sci fi stuff in the 80s wouldve loved this as well.

Rock progresivo. Una canción conocida. Ni fu ni fa.

Prog rock

I could listen to this alright.

la taille du retard bref

More of a 3.5 - fun to listen to since I was familiar with a number of the tracks.

Never listened to Rush before. Was somewhat underwhelmed, though the guitar was good.

Many call it a prog rock gem but I think that the album has more accessible rock songs than prog. Perhaps I still need a few listens of this album, because I'm not 100% sold on it - yet.

Love prog rock, love the musicality of this album, can't stand the vocals. It's frustrating, but it started with Rush's other album '2112.' I could never get into it because it just felt too shrill for me. Because of that, I never got into Rush or tried any of their other albums. So I was a little excited when this came up. I thought, maybe, that things would click a little better with this album, but in the end they just didn't. The vocals were still off-putting to me, and made the album unenjoyable to listen to.

Rush are... Fine. I liked some of this. Not really my thing I guess?

Starts off very strong, kinda trails off by the end. Rush was never really a full album band for me. This is another 3.5 that I have to round down to a 3. Also, I think Limelight is an overrated song. Standouts: Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, YYZ

I like the pomposity of this - knowingly clever and clearly demonstrating prowess. At the same time, only Tom Sawyer has a hook, and that is a pretty proggy hook. Won't be putting the album in heavy rotation, but that mad jazzy rocker is in the 'liked songs' folder.

Not for me

I have tried to get intro Rush mulitiple times, but I have always failed. On paper, Rush ticks all the right boxes for me: rock with a prog edge, great instrumentalists, great production values. But in reality they just ... don't. There is something about their songs (at least of that era) that just leaves me unengaged. Even though I can hear their brilliance on an intellectual level, it just fails to reach or move me more directly. Which is a shame. I guess that means 3/5.

It's like a musical theater rock album. I don't know why it made me laugh. Maybe I'm losing my mind.

I approached my second Rush album on here with trepidation, after all 2112 didn't leave me feeling very optimistic. My overall verdict is that they are an incredibly talented band (minus the singer), that too often make unfortunate choices with their music. Most of this album is decently listenable, and then YYZ just goes way harder than it has any business doing, that song single-handedly earns these Canucks 3 maple leaves. If only all their songs were instrumentals... 🍁🍁🍁

Not exactly my thing but definitely not bad. Each song was quite unique and had good production.

-got bangers -great proggy diatribes -bass fucking slaps -Peart is crazy; 80s drum mic’s sound great -lyrics can lose me on some songs but others are super hooky and catchy -incredible quality for such a concise record

I’ve never listened to Rush. The vocalist has a nice enough voice, and the writing is catchy in spots. I don’t see myself returning to this one.

Didn't really get into this one, although by the end of the second listen I started to see some of the progressive elements in songs like The Camera Eye, Witch Hunt, and Vital Signs which are probably my favourite from this album.

Rush didn't seem to make much of an impact in the UK - not among my friend group, anyhow. I never listened to them back in the day. Perhaps I'd look on them more fondly if they were getting a nostalgia bump? That not being the case, this leaves me a little cold. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Fave track - "Tom Sawyer", I guess? Seems familiar to me - definitely seen it used in soundtracks, but didn't know it was Rush.

I liked 2112 very much, and I was expecting something similar here, but I found just a good album and nothing else. Good listening session, but forgatable

Okay, this album was a roller coaster of emotions and not in a very good way. The best thing about this album is the instrumentals they got that in point but, the vocals and lyrics just don’t back it up as well. Tom Sawyer and red barchetta were so good but the vocals just ruined it for me. There’s a reason why YYZ in which he vocalist says 3 lines got nominated for a Grammy for best rock Instrumental. The last 2 songs I actually liked the vocals but they diminished the quality of the instruments so it just felt a bit odd. Vital signs surprised me since everything worked well in it, I think is my favorite song from it. I guess they saved the best for last. 7/10 would be a 8.5/10 if the vocals did Justice from the start.

Parhaimmat biisit toimii ja niissä on munaa. Kokonaisuus on kyllä melkosen poukkoileva ja latistaa yleistä tunnelmaa. Taipuu kolmoseen.

Whoops, missed rating this one. It's Rush, so it's going to be really good musicianship. The first half is better than the second, by a lot.

Too difficult for me but good

I maintain Rush is dorky but it's dorky in a fun way
