Reviews (page 9 of 14)

Very good use of instrument effects and ambient sounds.

Wow, I can't believe I hadn't listened through this yet! So inventive, fun to listen to, and well-produced. Way to go!

I had a writing professor that made us watch a 13-minute video of a Rush song performed live.

I always feel like Rush leans a bit too much into cheesiness, and it gets worse on deeper cuts. But the first half is basically a greatest hits. Limelight is such a great song.

Great album, i would probably put a 4.5 if I could, but I guess it'll be 4 for them today

Terrific album, particularly the first four tracks. Things fizzle out a bit once we've passed Limelight, but the whole album is still worth repeated listens.

Fuck Tom Sawyer is a good song. Fuck Red Barchetta is a good song. Carried by the first half of the album, although I enjoyed Witch Hunt. I wouldn't say the bottom of the album is bad, but it just starts so fucking strong with Tom Sawyer and Barchetta that it is hard for the rest of the album to match in quality. It's Rush, what can I say. Drums are fucking spectacular and riffs are clean as hell. Lyrics are great as the band comments on fame and societal pressure throughout the album. Favorite song Red Barchetta/Tom Sawyer. Least favorite The Camera Eye, goes on for too long for what it is. Overall 7/8.

Tom Sawyer, YYZ, and Limelight are solid tracks

I liked it but i felt it was uneven.

This album has very good vocal, instrumental and making wonderful feels, but today this album can't be compared in progressiveness of sound with recent albums

SENSACIONAL

Slappa da' bass man.

кто так и не запомнил как звучит Том Сойер? ит ми

It has a couple of fun songs but nothing that blew me away.

Can definitely hear the influence on things I like more. Didn’t enjoy the vocals very much.

You know, it’s Rush. Just what I expected.

pretty good YYZ and tom sawyer were my favs 7/10

Not bad

Really cool album! A bit of rock and roll from outerspace! Love the cover art aswell.

I don’t really like listening to Rush, but I do find their whole concept kinda hilarious, and there’s certainly no faulting the genuine enthusiasm of their mainly Canadian fanbase. A snarky review would be pointless. It would be like ripping The Wiggles a new one.

Fine. Rush isn't my thing.

Was surprised I knew a song from this from the metal cassette I have. I liked it well enough and would maybe listen again.

This is such a tight trio. I'm almost ashamed to say that I think of Rush as Peart's band. But when listening through with everyone's contributions in mind it's easy to hear how well these guys work together. Tom Sawyer

I have a hard time caring about this.

A Progressive Rock Masterpiece, but Not Without Its Baggage From what I know, Moving Pictures is widely considered Rush's definitive album. Here was the moment they balanced their progressive rock complexity with tighter, more accessible songwriting. It's an impressive showcase of technical musicianship, with four tracks earning spots on my playlist. "Tom Sawyer" kicks things off with an iconic synth riff and one of the most recognizable drum fills in rock history. The lyrics about a "modern-day warrior" with a mind not for rent capture the band's individualist spirit. It's a classic (and I appreciate the line about not selling your mind to any god or government) but the glorification of the individualist lands a bit off for me. I am thrust to remember how this type of rugged individualism is historically tied to capitalism and white imperialist culture. The song lands somewhere between a 7 and an 8. "Red Barchetta" tells a sci-fi story about a dystopian future where private cars are banned. The guitar breaks are super fun, and the musicianship is exceptional. But the "better vanished time" nostalgia is questionable: better for whom? That kind of longing for a pre-industrial past can veer into reactionary territory. That said, rebellion against a hypersurveillant state has its uses. I'd give it a 5 to 6. "YYZ" is an instrumental built around Toronto's airport Morse code. The riff at 2:50 and the bridge that follows are genuinely exhilarating. These guys really know their music. Added to playlist. 6.5 to 7. "Limelight" is about Neil Peart's discomfort with fame. The lyrics are unusually honest ("I can't pretend a stranger is a long-awaited friend") and the chorus is catchy. It's a well-written reflection on the cost of success, though the song's solution (put up barriers) is individualistic rather than transformative. 5 to 6. "The Camera Eye" is my favorite: a sprawling, 11-minute journey contrasting New York and London. The first half's relentless drive and the second half's wistful atmosphere make it a standout. It pushes boundaries and is genuinely engaging throughout. Great instrumentation, great vocals. It feels like a precursor to Dragonforce. Strong 8 to 9. "Witch Hunt" takes a darker turn, warning against mob mentality and fear-driven prejudice. It's politically charged and still relevant, though not the album's strongest musically. "Vital Signs" closes things out with a reggae-influenced, quirky energy. It's a fun, playful track about individuality and persistence: a perfect palate cleanser. Moving Pictures is a significant album in rock's progression, though it carries the baggage of its cultural context. The technical skill is undeniable, and the storytelling is compelling.

My favorite song of the album was the one where he doesn’t sing

There has always been some distance between Rush lyrics and the music. Maybe that's the drummer writing them, or just Neil Peart's personality. It's not true in every song, just most of them. Go read the lyrics of Vital Signs. How is that ever going to feel like anything? I can't deny the hooks of Tom Sawyer or Limelight, and I still like those songs and some others on the record. I appreciated YYZ more than I have in years. The best lyrics on this are probably Red Barchetta since it seems personal and inhabitable, even if I don't really care about it.

mid asf

Rock progressif, j’aime bien très basique mais dans le bon sens du terme à réécouter 3,5

Giving it a 3 for Tom Sawyer and Limelight, but I'm perfectly fine not hearing any of the other songs ever again.

Good album. Didn’t knock me out of my socks. But good energy.

Didn’t listen to the entire album, but it’s good!

I don’t really like Rush and had never listened to an album in its entirety before. I’m glad I listened but that was enough for me. Best thing about the band truly is the drummer.

Tom Sawyer is great. YYZ has phenomenal drumming. However it does get very repetitive.

They’re good musicians and see why someone would listen to them but not my cup of tea

Despite having some heaters I think this was just okay? Interesting response!

I like some prog rock. Some not so much. Rush landed on the not so much side for me. I think they are great musicians. Their music just doesn’t do anything for me. But, the hate, rancor and vitriol hurled by prog haters is mind numbing.

We want Lil' Rush! 3/5

Solid, all a little dramatic for me

mid, the top popular review is fun and i realized im kind of forcing myself to like some of these and not liking some enough

such a dad album! i liked how futuristic it sounds and the storytelling in the lyrics. definitely got a little repetitive- i have difficulty appreciating extended musical breaks and i’m working on that. i liked some songs better than others, but overall, pretty cool! i feel like rush writes music for movies.

Would I listen to it again: maybe? Wasn’t very memorable but also not that offensive to listen to. low 3

I didn’t not enjoy any of this or anything but it just didn’t feel particularly impactful or memorable either 3

i was scared of that 10 minute long song but it was actually BANGING the whole way through. Not really conected with the whole album though

Goes straight into Tom Sawyer, a jam. Some major hits. Limelight is still a stand-out. Pretty dang good.

Nice instrumental

The triple pun/entendre of the art work really captures the almost cleverness of the fellas. Should 100% be on the list, I just don't like prog rock.

I like the music and instrumental parts of the songs, but not so much the singing. Witch hunt was fun

Textured. Not my style, but I appreciate the layering.

Mmmmm prog rock my most middle favourite genre

album #66 the best song on this album is YYZ because there is no singing. (it's fine, i just found it too safe for something advertised as prog rock) ꩜ favourite track(s): YYZ, witch hunt ꩜ least favourite track(s): red barchetta ꩜ album rating: ★★⯪☆☆ ꩜ number of albums left to review: 1,023 ꩜ number of albums from the list that i agree with being on the list: 32 ꩜ albums from the list that I would consider on my list: 13 ꩜ albums from the list I won't include on my list: 53

Good first song with Tom Sawyer, the rest was just ok.

this album was one a of best eighty’s albums i listened to! my only issue was the vocals, but they weren’t terrible. my favorite song from it was vital signs.

Nice. Just rummages away in the background. Fine!

Tom Sawyer and Limelight are fun. Can definitely see an intentional shift from heavier rock to more radio friendly digestible rock. Easy listening with a bit of edge.

Great album. So many hits on one record. While not my cup of tea, definitely respect the accomplishment.

I've been aware of Rush for a while but was never really in a rush to give them a proper chance. What I found most enjoyable is the sheer virtuosity on display. The band plays with the kind of tightness you'd expect from the inner workings of a pocket watch, weaving complex time signatures in without skipping a beat or making it too jarring. This is something I'm sure anyone who plays an instrument or has been in a band can appreciate. I found the vocals and lyrics quite difficult, though. I just kept wishing they'd play cool instrumental breaks or even just have half the tracks be 100% instrumental as this is where this band really shines. Although I think the singing was technically proficient, it felt rather redundant, as if it were there out of some kind of social expectation, a box-ticking exercise, or corporate demand. Singing isn't the be-all and end-all of music. I'm not sure if it's because the singer plays an instrument while singing (I haven't looked into anything about this band), but it sounds like he's singing strictly on the beat, without a lead-in or pickup from the end of the bar before, which is very unusual. They're very talent musicians overall, but it's a bit cheesy in regards to the grating vocals/lyrics. My favourite track was definitely YYZ. If they have purely instrumental albums, I'd give them a listen, or if a friend invited me to go see them live, I'd say yes. But I'm not sure I'd be rushing to engage more with this band any time soon.

I didn't dislike this as much as I thought I would. In fact, I could hear a bunch of things that likely influenced some of my favourite music, especially in the prog/post-rock space (though the music I like most in this genre is not especially heavy on the meandering lyrics about driving fast cars or Tom Sawyer). The drumming is fantastic, and worth it just to listen to that alone. The synth textures were also fun flourish. I could do without most of the vocals, which at times seem like an afterthought. I will probably listen to YYZ and Limelight again. I really enjoyed the first half of The Camera Eye before the vocals started.

Great album. But it gives me flashbacks to the 1980’s. This was so overplayed.

It’s alright. I only like one of the songs

ngl solo habia escuchado tom sawyer de rush

Didn’t love!

No suenan mal pero meh. Dos veces escuché y no tengo nada para decir al respecto. No queda guardado

classic

Favorite songs: Tom Sawyer, YYZ, Limelight

Lo siento, papá.

sympa mais pas trop trop mon style

I wasn't too sure when I would have much time to listen to this album today, so I chose to listen to it while I went on my run. This is surprisingly a really good album to listen to when exercising. Some tracks had a bit of an uplifting feel to them, and I really enjoyed that. 'Tom Sawyer' as an opening track is brilliant, setting the tone of the album perfectly. This, however, feels like maybe one of those albums that you would need one or two more listens through to really appreciate the music. Favourites: Tom Sawyer YYZ The Camera Eye

Many of my friends are big Rush fans. Since we have similar musical tastes, I’ve always wondered why the band more or less passed me by without making much of an impression. This may be because I had hardly any exposure to Rush during my musical formative years, with one exception: the live album "Exit... Stage Left", which followed the album "Moving Pictures". At the time, I liked the record that a school friend played over and over again, but obviously not enough to make me want to explore the band further. And that’s pretty much how it’s stayed. Whenever a friend warmly recommends a particular track or album to me today, claiming it will “convert” me, I give it a listen. I find it quite all right, but it doesn’t really stick with me. Above all, it never triggers the urge to hear more of their music. It’s all very skilfully played and composed, of course, and the lyrics aren’t any sillier than those of, say, Yes (although, as an Italian, pseudo-Italo-Spanish titles like “La Villa Strangiato” (SIC!!!) look absolutely dreadful to me). I don’t even have any issues with Geddy Lee’s unusual voice either. I don’t know what it is I’m missing about the band. Perhaps it’s a bit too much of everything for me? Many Rush fans consider Moving Pictures to be the high point of their discography. As a self-confessed Prog aficionado, I find the album OK, but nothing more. Sorry, folks.

Once again I am impressed by the dramatics of rock in the 80s. Surprisingly glam, theatrical, over the top, kind of queer? There was a little band called Coheed & Cambria from the 2000s that I feel pulled a lot of musical inspiration from this album.

I don’t rush to play Rush, but I didn’t rush to turn this off either. :rim shot:

Not a fan of Rush or prog. 2.5.

I have tried to like Rush, but failed, however this is better than my other encounters.

very cool rock album, songs are pretty long they feel like they go on and on. not really my vibe but I dig it

Sounds as if the Lord of the Rings was made into an epic rock opera. Sorry, Joe.

Not bad. Nothing really stood out to me though.

extremely overrated

The hits hold up, particularly “limelight”which still rules. I’m not a big prog guy, but these guys are clearly better than the other nerds on this list. Between the noodling around are legit tracks. It’s not my scene, but this is a worthy entry.

straight some shit your cool uncle would listen too, but mine is dead so idk.

I'm going to come back to this. I found it all a bit meh! I know the musicianship is tight on the album. I want to know what I'm missing because I assume that it's me.

awesome album. i’ve heard the hits, but the quieter parts like “The Camera Eye” and “Vital Signs” are great

Tom Sawyer- A CLASSIC. That opening synth tickles the brain. Great drum line. Red Barchetta YYZ- Didn't previously know this song but it's epic, full instrumental/no vocals. Syncopation and time change (?) at the start (possibly throughout?) gives so much movement. Newfound respect for the drummer of this band. Neil Peart. Limelight - Another classic, a great sing along. "All the world's indeed a stage / And we are merely players / Performers and portrayers..." The Camera Eye - This 10+ minute song is a journey. I think being in my dance music girl era, I'm noticing a lot more of the synths that tickle my brain (reminding me rn of Chris Lake/Sammy Virji 925). Witch Hunt - story telling. Vital Signs - Had to relisten bc I realize I wasn't paying attention. Not sure if it was my attention span or just the song was not memorable. Overall: I know of Rush, and loved 'Tom Sawyer' and 'Limelight'. Can't say I ever listened to this album through beginning to end, but glad I did. YYZ was solid, and almost made the following song ('Limelight') seem basic. Definitely renewed my respect for the drummer and why he's considered one of the greatest drummers of all time. Newfound noticings of synths that tickle my brain. Some songs fell flat compared to others imo (like Vital Signs and Red Barchetta felt unmemorable to me). 72/100 (3.6)

Solid, prog-rock with a couple of classics.

I have done a deep dive into Rush’s back catalogue recently on the basis of them being a band I’m bound to like. But I couldn’t get into them and listening to this again I still have the feeling that there is so much to love here, but I can’t quite touch it.

An album that has incredible musicianship. A bit theatrical for me at times, but do enjoy a lot of these tracks. Highlights: "Tom Sawyer" and "Limelight"

I like a few songs it has a vibe like posware

I am not a fan of this sort of rock, but Limelight really struck me well, with the way of words flowing together with the melody. YYZ lowkey feels like a background music you could play on some video and Tom Sawyer did not struck me well tbh, Red Barcetta is also maybe not bad, but still I am not unc enough yet to really enjoy this music, even though these songs are made really well...

Great guitar, exceptional drumming - I just wish I could like the lead vocals. The best of this era of early 80s mainstream rock. Absolute banger of an album cover.

There's a lot to like here, but it didn't really click with me. Weird because I like prog rock a lot. Will give it a relisten and reevaluate later.

Some tracks really surprised me

Not really my thing tbh, it was a good album though!

this is more like a 3.5, fun and energetic, but i think it’s a little formulaic. still cool tho

I like it. Not their best but still great.

I couldn’t quite get past the vocals on this one, there were elements I liked and to an extent, it’s in my wheelhouse but ultimately I don’t really think I’d rush back.

Good First song is a classic Good

Classic 80’s.

Rush was one of those ‘I should listen to’ bands. Did not disappoint but not the revolution the hype sold. Was solid, did enjoy.

Zo'n groep die je altijd vergeet… heel nice!

cool ig ma zegt me ni zo veel 3.5

Rush are very marmite, but you can't argue with the musicianship.

Pretty interesting I might return

its very upbeat and fluid and never dull and maybe maybe progressive rock isnt for me? idk well see

Mmmmmm

Genre : 3/5 Mélodie : 3.5/5 Paroles : — Voix : 2/5 Cohérence : 4/5 Variété : 4/5 Pochette / Titre : 4/5 Dans ma playlist : The Camera Eye 1/5 Nombre d'écoute totale : 1.5 MOYENNE :

Excellent production and instrumentation. I only don’t like the voice.

I prefer other Rush albums.

Interesting, actually. 3.5-ish

Music for nerds. The soundtrack to a Dungeons and Dragons game. I rolled my eyes when I saw this as the album for today...and it's not terrible, it's just nothing I want to listen to on my own. It's hit or miss all over the place. Geddy's voice is good in some parts, other parts it's obnoxious. They get pretty heavy and groove for a second, then change it up (yes, it's prog, I know). That said, they're fantastic musicians. The bass lines here are great, Lifeson's guitar is excellent and I understand why Peart is in the upper echelon of all time drummers. It's not that this isn't a well crafted album with bad musicians...it's quite the opposite. Tom Sawyer is always a great song, the end of the last song (Vital Signs?) absolutely slapped. So while I respect the people that made this album and enjoyed bits and pieces of it, it's just not something I feel the need to listen to again.

I hated all the songs by them that I heard on the radio. But acording to music nerds, they are a good band so lets see. I hate that guy voice so fucking much. I thought their singer was a woman for a long time, I couldnt believe that was a guy singing at first. But the all the instrumental work is really good on this album. They are like the Megadeth of prog ? I think the synth are kinda goofy honestly. Not bad just goofy. I much prefer the melotron used in King Crimson. My favorite song on the album was the instrumental "YYZ" because I dind't had to endure that fucking chipmunk of a singer. Music: 4/5 Vocal: 0/5

It was a pretty good and interesting album I might listen to it again but who knows

богатые гитарные соло, но песни показались достаточно однообразными возможно, я что-то не улавливаю визуал альбома топ в целом тянет на 6/10

bien pero ahí

Our first RUSH album! We listened to it on the speaker while walking Pickett in the East way disc golf course...it got Pickett so riled up that he stole a torta from the backpack of some soccer player and ran away with it, lol!.. First impression from mom: love the album cover but...yeah just not for me. Too 80s. You seemed to vibe hard with it...so hard you passed out in the front carrier halfway through.

Typical rock album with great instrumentals and a surprising amount of synths for its age. Lyrics are very storytelling yet poetic, though almost masked by the striking instrumentals of the songs. Personal favorite: YYZ Personal score: 6.4/10

You must be a very specific kind of person to enjoy Rush. YYZ was a song my music teachers performed on a school presentation. I didn't get it back then, the song is complex and interesting but it's not a song i'd enjoy back then. Then I saw them perform live in Mexico City, it was amazing but after 5 songs I was falling asleep. I didn't know the songs. Tom Sawyer is an aquired taste after many Rock Band sessions. I feel like it's a band you need to listen many times in order to understand why they're so cool. But it's not for casual music listeners.

Rock pesado pero progresivo y a la vez chill, medio viajero de a ratos, mucho synth piola. Me gusto, me da vibes a the police…

A fun lyrical adventure. Very 80's (which makes sense) and although I think the singer is a fine vocalist, I just personally didn't enjoy their voice so my preferred sections were the more guitar heavy bits. Best song was YYZ. Inoffensive album, but I don't think I'd 'Rush' back to listen to it.

It was really loud. Just fine, didn't hate it didn't love it.

The music is interesting and quite progressive. And the vocals are very memorable. However, by the end of the album, the music started to get repetitive, and the very long tracks were hard to listen to.

Full Album Thoughts: Album Rating: 3.33 (B+) Canadian classic. The first real Rock Album we have, which tends to be more my wheel house. I happen to really enjoy prog rock, a bit of synth magic, and some funky time signatures. Is the only thing holding back this album is short runtime when you take out the stinker 11 minute song and my undue hatred of YYZ? This feels like a me problem, but its my ranking so meh. Track Thoughts: "Tom Sawyer" S When the first track is the Classic that has Broken Containment to become a bit of a meme... and its still this excellent? Yeah this is an all timer right here. Phil Collins eat your heart out at this drum fill. Geddy Lee's voice cuts through the swampy bass riff like lightning. Was this also part of Rockband? Concerning that I have only HEARD of one other song on this album, and I couldnt conjure it to mind (something tells me its in 7/4 though). "Red Barchetta" A Kind of giving Boston vibes? Which is good, I like me some swimmy chorus. See, now this isn't JUST a "I wanna fuck my Car" song. This is a story about generational male bonding! Its touching! It also does that Progrock thing of not really falling into chorus-verse structure but just kinda jamming new musical ideas in. Feels like a solid "racing song" too. Its JUST on the right side of "Long Song" to even slip into a playlist without like, overpowering it. Those tapped ghost notes on the harmonics right at the end... it makes me think of Spyro/Sonic music in places? "YYZ" D I KNEW THIS WAS THE 7/4 ABOMINATION! This song feels like a mean trick. Just a pure instrumental (which I usually like) just to be as "Technically Impressive" as possible. There are parts of this that feel like they'd be right at home with Japanese Jazz Fusion acts. Breaking bottles as percussion is A Choice. I am actually a YYZ hater, something about all its constitute parts that add up to LESS than it's whole. "Limelight" A+ Oh heck I really like the stutter step rhyme scheme of this! You know, its now only surrounded by the reverb soaked tones of Geddy that I realize that is what is missing from YYZ. I really just like Rush's lyricism AND vocal delivery! The back half of this song being about as close as I ever want Rush to get to a Slow Jam, this wailing guitar solo... I can't say I've ever heard this song before in my life but I REALLY dig it. This is that 'hidden' (well how hidden can it be on the album with Tom Sawyer but still it was hidden to me) gem I wouldn't have found without doing this project. "The Camera Eye" C+ Why does this intro feel like it should have "Brought to you by the government of Canada" overlaying its jazzy synth? I am strapping in for an 11 minute song. I am ready. Yes me up, daddy, I mean Geddy. Could have been a smoother transition at the 2 minute mark... Doing interesting things time signature wise does not make up for a bit too repetitive of the 2 main riffs in this next part, modulating back and forth between the two root notes. And then at 6 minutes we are into Corpo Product Demo Tape Backing Track for a bridge before going back to the same "Back and forth riff" from before. I think the lyrical picture it paints is too sparse between the repeated musical ideas... its not really a Long Groove Song for me. This one could be tightened up and improved. "Witch Hunt" C+ Oooh! A Creepy Tone! Sadly its like 2 minutes and going, and its too sparse. I was almost hoping it'd kick into a John Carpenter-like groove by now, and it does almost get there, but at half the run time... this is another skip, but at least its not an entire quarter of the runtime of the album! "Vital Signs" B+ Now this is how you kick off an album ender! its still sparser then I'd like initially... it might be the syncopated guitar riff but this is giving me Police vibes? "An ounce of perception an pound of obscure" is an all time lyric tho. This hits me in my "robot rock" soft spot.

Was never a big Rush fan but like some of their stuff, including (and especially) this album. This is one of the (I think) two Rush albums I own, the other being (I think) 2112. Every time I hear "YYZ" I expect it to launch into Primus's "John the Fisherman."

Tom Sawyer: Fun synths this shi lowkey a vibe; vocals are funny strong start Red barchetta: lowkey not very memorable, a little boring and dragged on not nearly as fun or strong as the first single YYZ: Guitar rift at the start is VERY fun enjoying it so far, was really looking for some vocals but reagrdless a fun song that stands out to me so far Limelight: easy to listen to song, again this guitarist is nutty with the riffs and counter melodies, crowd pleaser kidn of song i think, The camera eye: it has its moments but its sometimes feels overly reptitive didnt love the vocal bits here either, it takes so long for this song to be fun which is near the end and so longgggggg Witch hunt: very fun intro, very differnt from everything else so far hoping it stays this way Overall pretty good but nothing to write home about

very 80s with a sprinkle of 70s and a portion of nostalgia

I hate Rush, but I understand that most people do not. After listening to this album in full I have decided that I will continue to hate Rush.

Don't love the singer but the music's great.

7 points out of 10

This was just okay. I have not a lot to say about it

A bit disappointed that this wasn't better than it is.

ummm... a lot of guitar and not a lot of substance

This one was fine, it's a fun style but it's just very good, not great. Favorite track: "Limelight"

I wasn't really into it. Sounds a lot the same and the songs are so long. Maybe if I found it at a different stage of my life I would like it better. I know this is Dan's favorite band. I thought I was hearing a song I liked, it was just Pink Floyd on auto-play.

i would like it more if they didn't sound exactly like my uncle

Tight musicianship, and several great tracks.

Oh I'm really enjoying this I can't lie. This is very interesting. What the hell is going on here. Yeah idk I'm really rocking with this. I don't know what it reminds me of but I really Like it. Actually it is kind've giving me Wolfmother vibes. That sort or squeaky rock. Big fan of it. Definitely going in my playlists. They're from fucking Canada really. Rahhh. Fuckin Toronto bruh. Mandatory rock instrumental track of course. Just a solid rock album. And it's Canadian which makes it better rahhhh. Lowkey just making noises. Interesting. Favourite: Witch Hunt Least favourite: The Camera Eye

not really my vibe but good music still!

6/10 - very 80s rock, could be a soundtrack to an action film

Me when writing 1001 reviewer headcanon 😳 "Once upon a time there was a very nice reviewer who just loooooved to take readers on long adventures across the Kingdom of Music. During one such trip, the group came across the remains of prog rock, now housed in a mausoleum. This was the reviewer’s favourite part of the journey, because he'd recite the legend of PR’s untimely death and how the 80s rose to power across the land. The story goes that Prog was blessed, like many others, with the power to inspire the world. It lived in a village where other sonic youths would play. Some wouldn't get along, while others came together to form new sounds. Then suddenly, the Rush kingdom and its ruler, Geddy Lee, led an invasion supported by the 80s that would ultimately shake the world of music to its core, starting in Prog's village. While he told the story, the group walked past torn portraits of former genres that were once confiscated by the Rush-Marillion Agency, the former kingdom's police force. After the 90s saw the creation of a genre confederacy, there was renewed interest among the styles to build a memorial to honour their ancestors, the mausoleum of Prog Rock was built to commemorate its enduring legacy on the music world. Going back to the legend, when Geddy Lee threatened PR, the reviewer would make a shrill, snarling voice like he was trying to clear his throat from mentioning the name. By the time he made the noise that killed PR, several tourists had fainted, and the group had to take an extra day. We spent the rest of it discussing music tastes and learning about the different genres that make up the confederation. At the end of our journey, we paid respects to Prog Rock. But as everyone was about to leave, one of the members who was straggling suddenly heard what seemed like Prog's voice talking to the wind. It was reported to have come from the many adventures it took: a mix of the jazzy woods to the ambient seas." Tbh, this was my first time listening to Rush and 80s prog rock. The reviewer, whose top rating for this album I made a pastiche to, had some good insights on the contemporary sound and how it reached every genre. I literally could've listened to this album from another artist. And the lead singer's voice is a grower for sure. P.S. Au top reviewer qui a écrit ce critique légendaire, merci de le créer. Tu m’as inspiré d’en faire mes propres!

tom sawyer was good, not my cup o tea tho 3/5

La musica esta bien pero no me cambio la vida. Quizas lo deba escuchar mas. O con mas contexto, no se.

Appreciate the creativity but not high on my list.

I like that one, may relisten

Oh shit is this turning me into a Rush fan? The singing used to annoy me when I'd hear the odd track. But the music has drawn me in across the day listening to it (3rd listen) and the singing has grown on me...

while listening bladee suddenly appeared behind me several times

Better than I remember. Fun proggy stuff.

Tom Sawyer is a classic but a little Rush goes quite a long way

Very obviously published in the 80’s lol.. the Morse code thing and the time signature of 10/8 for the song for YYZ was pretty cool actually. Very creative. Fairly short album but pretty catchy. Overall it was alright ig but not really my thing.

I think the last time I fully heard this album was like 10 years ago, after learning about Dream Theater so I think that when I finally got to Yes I just never returned to this. And that makes sense, Tom Sawyer is cool for Neil Pearts solo and the rest is meh. And this is how I feel even into Limelight, the nerdiness kinda overcomes the fun. The Camera Eye and Witch Hunt surprisingly teetered more towards fun though, but Vital Signs catapulted towards it. Just an awesome groove.

Tom Sawyer is a theme song from my childhood

I am a big fan of a lot of progressive rock and metal, but this veers way too far into the cheesy territory for my tastes. As for so many others, I find the vocals to be off-putting. Overall I quite enjoyed a lot of this but not enough to return to or dig into the rest of Rush's back catalogue.

Ihan jees! Laulajalle ++ ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Musically, I mostly dig it. ‘Tom Sawyer’, ‘Red Barchetta’ and ‘Limelight’ are great riff-driven rockers, and ‘YYZ’ is a fun, groovy instrumental. As is so often the case, however, side two is considerably weaker than side one. ‘The Camera Eye’ is definitely too long, and ‘Witch Hunt’ and ‘Vital Signs’ are decent but not mindblowing. As a collection of tracks, maybe a low 4 stars? However, there are a couple, more general negative points that knock off another star: first, I really don’t like Geddy Lee’s voice, which detracts significantly from my enjoyment; second, the lyrics are often pretty bad.

very bud toner coded

kind of a feat to make prog rock sound ESPECIALLY nerdy. i'm a sucker for switching up time signatures & the drumming in general on this album was very good. i did get a massive headache halfway through listening that had nothing to do w the album & derailed the rest of my day so that mightve biased me from being more gracious. sounds a bit like video game music i think bc it comes across vaguely artificial despite being high energy

I wasn't a huge fan of the overall sound. this album was just fine for me

Would’ve been better if it was shorter

not really my type of music but pretty good. some songs are BANGER tho I will say that

I've never really listened to Rush before. I had friends in High School obsessed with them but never understood why until now.

War ok nichts was ich mir in die playlist packen würde aber gut zum aufräumen

Good album, but never really a Rush fan.

Very dad, it’s a little too intense for me. But I do respect the drumming and the classic 80s of it.

Still not a fan.

Album 70 Top 3 favorites off the album: Red Barchetta, YYZ, Limelight, Another semi-household name courtesy of my dad. I like their sound, have for a few years, not a band I seek out on my own usually, might start, might not, can't say. Weird time signatures and polyrhythms clean as always, Neil Peart is masterful on the drums, etc. etc. etc. Huzzah!

I would like this band a lot more if not for Geddy Lee’s voice…I find it incredibly annoying. I liked the live album that was on this list better. I give this one three stars.

Tom Sawyer and Limelight are obviously solid songs. The rest are ok, but not my favorite. I don't love the singer's voice, which detracts a bit from my rating. Also not huge on the "Rush sound", but I did rock out with the first half of this album. (3)

Do I like "Tom Sawyer" or do I just recognize it? I am not really sure. Compared to 2112, this is less weird and more radio-friendly.

fav songs: red barchetta limelight prog, clean, sectional 60/100

Meh not my thing

Long drawn out, sameness Tom sawyer Limelite

Mais legal do que eu achei que seria! Gostei principalmente da bateria mas desgostei da voz estridente do vocalista hehe.

I feel my guitar hero skills returning! When I flew to Toronto a few years ago, I couldn’t get YYZ out of my head. Bum, ba bum bum bum ba bum bum bum bubba ba bum bum bum ba bum bum bum ba

YYZ fries my brain everytime i hear it (cure you, music theory). but outside of that i kind of forgot i was listening to it as it was on and barely realized it had ended. not bad, but not my vibe either. 3 stars

Not particularly my kind of music. Decent Rock/Metal? Album yet

It was a pretty good rock album. Limelight was the highlight, the instrumental tracks reminded me of a stage in Sonic (complimentary)

Years ago I was doing landscaping between degrees. It was a good job and I met some interesting people. One guy and I were talking about Rush: he had a friend of a friend who was doing some work at a house owned by an elderly couple. In the hallway, they had life-sized portrait of Geddy Lee. He laughed and asked why they had that. He was their son. I was never a fan growing up in Canada, but when I was visiting San Diego a few times and hanging out in some of the shops at Mission Beach and Ocean Beach, I was constantly hearing Rush being played.

I can see why people liked it

Remastered version, good listening experience

Don't get me wrong, it's very good album. Many bangers, great production and detailed sound. But although I've tried for years, I can't really get into Rush. Again, I enjoy some songs and can appreciate the artistry, but it's just not my thing, I guess. (I want to note that this time I especially liked the guitar work of Alex Lifeson. He doesn't get mentioned enough next to his band mates). A 3.

I quite like the music of Rush, but I don't quite like the vocals of Rush.

Goodness Rush is one of my least favorite bands, so a tough start to my album journey

Pretty good. Hadn't heard them much before but enjoyed the sound.

Not my piece of cake

Good listen, synths and guitar solos are solid. Never heard of these fellas pleasantly surprised.

Okay, didn’t love it, didn’t hate it

Rush is one of the only prog rock bands for whom embracing pop really worked. And despite being from the onset of the 80's, Moving Pictures is pretty universally considered one of the best Rush albums. Much like with Rush as a whole, I enjoy moving pictures, but I have some problems. Prior to this point, I think Rush had something of an identity crisis: I don't think they could ever fully reconcile Hard Rock Rush with Prog Rock Rush. This combo gave us a fair number of classics, but even in the 70's, Rush would occasionally end up kind of irritating. On Moving Pictures, Rush worsens this identity crisis by throwing some 80's pop into the mix. This means that Rush's sound could expand into their most direct and accessible incarnation yet, but with the occasional new and exciting form of irritating moment that we've never seen before. At the best, you get Tom Sawyer. Tom Sawyer has simple, hard hitting, and imminently enjoyable grooves, and it's enhanced by the occasional proggy flourish. You've also got Limelight, a song with a start I'm whatever on, and an ending I love. With YYZ Rush is on some pure prog, and it's a great reminder that they can just go at it, YYZ absolutely rips. I think the most unlikely success here is Vital Signs though. Rush's most dub inspired song at this point is honestly pretty awesome, and it's kind of shocking; I didn't think they had it in them. But at this album's worst, you have Red Barchetta, a fine song. But it is irritating. Rush's mix of prog, pop, and hard rock results in an excruciatingly literal ballad about a baffling dystopian future in which regular cars are outlawed. I know it's based on a short story, but this song also feels like Rush are combining nerd interest, cool guy interest and a misplaced whimsy to *deeply* irritating effect. In the middle you have Camera Eye, on which Rush try to stretch one of their pop songs to 11 minutes without really capturing me. And also, Witch Hunt has a cool atmosphere, but the meat feels insufficient, especially for a 5 minute long song. Ultimately, Moving Pictures is a pretty graceful path for Rush to take into the 80's, but there are a couple obnoxious missteps that kneecap the experience a little for me. That being said, there is still a pretty great album at the core here.

Exacting

I feared that this was going to be awful prog music. I actually enjoyed the whole thing. I might return to it if I get a very particular itch for over amped prog.

Good album but not as great as I would have thought.

War ok

3 stars

Nice instrumentals and good voice, however nothing really stood out to me.

3/5 It was an entertaining album, but not much else. Nothing really stood out to me.

Some good songs, some boring songs. I liked exactly half of the playlist. Not the type of rock I'm used to, but it's alright.

solid metalish album

ugh mr e show would die !! sorry eshow such a solid 3 to me

this one’s for eshow never actually rly listened to to any rush music but i am enjoying, like i kinda get it part of yyz reminded me of so what by pink so that was exciting the singers voice kinda sounds like the greta van fleet guy

Strong opening track, but it goes downhill from there. As far as 80s rock bands go, this one isn't offensive - it's fine for background music. I like this better than some other "let's jam" bands on the list... Witch Hunt is a fun one! I like the moody atmosphere created with the synth and guitar.

One of the most pivotal prog rock albums ever, but the genre has never been for me. It's got great drumming parts and is very dynamic and interesting. I can see why this album is loved, but for me, it's not really.

Fun album. I liked the cover, the guitar and the drums, didn't enjoy the lyrics much. Favorite song: Witch Hunt

pre-listen notes: really excited to see a canadian band in the mix! haven't, to my knowledge, heard any of their music, so i'm excited to see whatever they bring to the table. thoughts while listening - red barchetta and yyz are both really good songs! - love the instruments i wish there was 3.5 on here because i'd rate it that, but i think that i'll stick with 3 / 5 stars.

Solid 3.5 Stars. Better than the average album this challenge gives me.

competent but still manage to boring and uninteresting. super whatever ass album in comparison to other prog rock albums i've heard

It was impressive epic and technically strong, and I didn't care.

I’ve heard “Tom Sawyer” on classic rock radio hundreds of times, so this was probably my first listen to it with headphones. I gotta say that it sounds great. Prog in a pop song; each instrument gets a hook. I enjoyed this more than I expected. Geddy Lee’s voice doesn’t bother me (I actually like his nasally howl, to be honest) and the songs themselves avoid most of the wankery I associate with this era’s prog rock (this is true even of the nearly-11-minute “The Camera Eye”).

Can't deny the technical musicianship and talent, some good songs, but honestly found it rather dull and not particularly gripping.

It was...fine I guess? Musically very competent, occasionally interesting, Pretty weak but perfunctory vocals, solid bass playing, occasional obnoxious drum fills. But it feels sterile to me. I don't feel anything listening to it. It's just...there.

Pretty solid. Not a huge rush fan but not, not a fan ya know?

Slapa da bass man!

Rush usually isn’t my jam but for some reason it was hitting throughout this album, a couple songs dragged on too long but very enjoyable overall!

Rush is alright. Don't love it, don't hate it.

Yes that sure is 80s prog rock

mid, but in a nice way

Such good fun! Operatic and enjoyable!

Rush, especially Moving Pictures, has some baggage for me. This album was popular when I was a teen and there were several people in my life who simply couldn’t fathom that I was not completely blown away by this album. They carried a firm conviction that if they simply played it for me a couple dozen more times, I would see the light. I never fully did, but they kept trying. I mention all of this because there has now been a long enough hiatus that I might be able to listen from a fresh perspective. I’ve always agreed that these are amazing musicians. Except for the keyboards there is clearly exceptional talent on display. The write up in the book suggests that Rush was among the few progressive rock bands to successfully respond to New Wave. I think that is my issue. Moving Pictures attempts to mesh two genres that I enjoy, but it just doesn't work. I find myself landing exactly where I did many years ago. There is nothing bad about this album, it just isn’t the work of genius, as some insist. And no, listening to it a dozen more times will still not change my mind. It just doesn’t move me.

Pretty good. Tom Sawyer is still a stand-out track. The rest is very prog rock, which I’m not always high on, but there are a few tracks (especially the last one) which I could see myself coming back to.

This was my first experience with Rush. Not what I was expecting based on my perception of Rush stans.

I really liked the song Limelight. I think they have a nice sound, but I'm not really drawn in enough to want to be a fan. Also his voice is kinda nasal

Not very familiar with Rush but this one is fairly good.

hmmmm sounded like rush to me … i listened twice and by the end i do kind of get it but i dont think that this is my music. the beginning of the final song is fire. firmly in the i can appreciate it category. if 1 is unlistenable and 2 is strongly dislike than this would be a 3 — tolerable but not for me.

also 6/10 not too special

Not terrible but this is like 45 mins of dudes aggressively jamming

Good, not great.

Dynamic and inspired drumming and guitars (including bass). Enjoyed the style of vocals Reminiscent to me of new wave and post-punk but with more technicality that you'd expect from prog rock. My only negative thought is that it feels like the last track ends abruptly, both in how Vital Signs feels like it cuts out and that moving pictures as an album felt like it had more to tell. I was surprised how much I enjoyed this album overall, I've never given prog rock a proper listen but Moving Pictures by Rush may inspire me to listen to more.

Got some good hits. A little all over the place. Tom Sawyer definitely a classic and the ooky spooky Witch Hunt also is great. The driving force of YYZ is also really fun. I dont know if id listen to the whole thing back to front again, but will definitely revist some tracks

A few songs that are great but I have never really gotten into Rush.

Best one so far!!

I mean Tom Sawyer is an all-timer for me. Rest of the album is good don’t get me wrong but I doubt I’ll revisit

A lot of the songs felt familiar, so maybe songs i know sampled them? Pretty solid. I get the appeal.

6/10 not a huge rush fan

This is not my typical music taste BUT love that they’re Canadian and have a large fanbase. I really enjoyed the metal and techno fusion and each song was varied in some way or another. My personal favourite was Witch Hunt

This is great, a lot of complex music. Not my thing though.

Did not enjoy the electric guitars, did enjoy the drums

Honestly, pretty awesome. I’ve always thought Prog was a bit corny, but I really liked the instrumentation and production and there were some good philosophical lyrics that felt if anything on the nose but not too corny. Man that Nick Cave Bad Seeds album that was so cringe that it made Rush sound like Bach.

not my bag </3

Too many guitar solos.

I really enjoyed this album; definitely for the most part and the beginning few tracks was a fun listen, I am not the biggest fan of the typical 80s rock sound but some of the guitar parts and synth melodies were really special. Still not an album that has blown me away but I definitely enjoyed listening to it and I may revisit in the future

I like the random noise sound effects, like the crashing sounds in YYZ (I think it was that one) and the panning is cool. Rush is a tight band for sure, and I like the drummer a lot. The drummer is probably my favorite part of the band. I liked YYZ and Limelight the best. It's a cool album, but I probably wouldn't actively listen to it again 3.5/5

Glam Rocky, clean production, overall sounds good- dad rock feel for sure. Lumps into a lot of the sound of the time for me. Nothing particularly remarkable about it, but still enjoyable.

I know I am supposed to like this. Classic, right?

Funky time signatures! I'm afraid Rush's echo-y, 80s arena rock sound still does not do it for me. Admittedly YYZ is pretty damn good nonetheless. Standout: YYZ

Ihan kivaa progea, muistuttaa The Whosta Pink Floydillä silti enemmän sielua Poliittista sanomaa

classic milestone in hard-prog rock, too neat for my taste

music is good but i don't like her way of singing somehow

Tom Sawyer is a good opening. I liked it, catchy. Red Barchetta feels too long. YYZ has incredible riffs and beats. By far my favorite so far. Limelight has a good beat and is memorable The Camera Eye is very classic 80s. This is a 10 minute song. LONG ASS FUCKING SONG. Witch Hunt- 4:44. Fun! Feels creepy. Second fave. Vital signs makes me feel like im on a mission. Nice closing. Overall 3/5. I liked, not my favorite

I love the first track, Tom Sawyer, and I love the sound of all the tracks; the first one just stuck out to me more. I do think it will grow in me the more I listen and the lyrics seem interesting. Vital's lyrics seem interesting in particular, so looking forward to hearing them back and diving deep into the lyrics.

Enjoyed

YYZ and Vital Signs real good, don’t understand why Tom Sawyer is “the” song however. For a three piece band they make a lot of noise, they’re okay.

not usually my taste but enjoyable

Pretty mediocre album Top songs: -YYZ -limelight

Tbh this is a really front loaded album. Opening with Tom Sawyer is crazy because it’s peak but it’s kinda downhill from there. YYZ and Limelight are bangers but don’t stand up to the opening track. Then the rest of the album is ok but not bangers like the others.

Was alright, I'm not a big fan of this style of singing tbh, it just doesnt do much for me. Some nice guitar riffs, but nothing that majorly stood out to me. "YYZ" is a fantasic song and if more of the album were like this, Id have enjoyed it more. I was disappointed by "The Camera Eye", I think it started out really promising but lost me about halfway through."Witch Hunt" reminds me of Jack Black in the School of Rock haha.

It was alright, nothing special

What about the voice of Geddy Lee? How did it get so high, I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy? I know him, and he does!

Listened while writing a literature review - favourites were limelight and vital signs. Not something I would have ever chose to listen to but I can’t say I didn’t like it, I liked how it combined moody rock and funk, pretty new to me. If I were a dad I would tell my child this is real music but fortunately I never will be and will probably never revisit this. Great for someone I’m sure.

So so iconic. Like three or four songs that are unquestionable pillars of rock/prog, and tbh didn’t know they all came from the same album. Thats lit! Good job rush! 3.5 for me tbh

It had some really good songs, but nothing that really grabbed me for that long.

This might need another listen for me to really like it

i’ve also listened to this before and i liked it

When I was an undergrad music student, my Rush-obsessed friend used to get drunk at parties and recite Rush lyrics like they were poetry. They were not, in my opinion, poetry. Anyway, I've always kind of liked their hyperbolic prog rock, and I think I'm obligated as a Canadian to be proud of them.

Proggy. Pretty good overall, good drumming(if overly fussy at times). Geddy Lee’s voice is a bit irritating after a while. Rush is one of those bands I’ve heard about but never listened to. Now I have. My life is not drastically changed. And on we move……

My original review was a bit harsh perhaps: "I’ve never been a fan of Rush, probably because I don’t enjoy the vocals at all and the lyrics are garbage. Even musically I find this rather unendurable. The guitar riffs are mediocre and samey. Nothing grips me at all, not even “Tom Sawyer”. I can’t stand “YYZ”, and I like most instrumentals. Was glad when the album ended so I could put something decent on. I’ll give it a 2 because I didn’t turn it off and because it’s relatively short which reduced my torture." It's true, I'm not a fan of Rush, never have been and don't think I ever will be. "Tom Sawyer" is okay and I don't think the album is 'unendurable'. Perhaps I was in a pissy mood. Still though, I think there are much better bands out there. It gets a 3 this time. Who knows, maybe it'll grow on me.

I immediately disliked this during the first song, the singer's voice really put me off. I kept it in the background and then ended up quite liking it. I've heard that the singer's voice deepened over the years, and this is their 8th album, so earlier albums may be a no still!

favorite song-limelight best song-tom sawyer deep cut-camera eye hidden gem-red barchetta

Good album, with some hits. 6.3/10

Typical 80s rock band. Good sound and very listenable.

Did not really enjoy the vocals

80s sound. Heavy drums, guitar, synth, nasal vocal lead. Multiple samples of random noises. I suspect it's influential to the decade. Not my fav sound. It's fine.

Eh fine. Inoffensive rock.

Quite like Rush and had heard this and Permanent Waves before. Permanent Waves is better (compare for example The Spirit of Radio to Tom Sawyer). Whilst the likes of YYZ are incredible musically, some of the songs are not first-class. Torn between 3 and 4 stars, I'll play it safe with 3.

Favourite track: Limelight

I can’t really remember how I felt about it so I’m taking that as it was very neutral for me

tom sawyer é uma grande música viu? bom álbum 3,5

Cover 6 Good album. Musically, it's great. Lyrically, it's ok. Sometimes it seems like the songs are unnecessarily long for the sake of being long. Or the lyrics were really an after thought.

Mid 3 Fun one this

6/10 Unfortunate for Rush they were the day after the Masters, Led Zeppelin. Whereas Led Zeps genius seems to be so easy, Rush feel like they have to force everything a little bit too much. It is all a bit too clever and you can really see their workings at times. Still, enjoyable rock music for sure

Eh.. I like prog, but not this kind. People seem to be silly for this band and I don't see the fuss. It's like Zappa, but more vanilla. Super "musical" ie. lots of notes, but without the personality (take it or leave it) of Zappa.

Interesting sounds! 3.5. I especially like Tom Sawyer but I already heard it.

Tom Sawyer was stuck in my head for hours! I actually really enjoy his singing voice and the keyboard is iconic, but the songs were really long. A bit too much instrumental for me.

Movies.

I'm not a big Rush fan. The songs are all just a tad too long and really aren't all that interesting.

En başta pek bana geçmedi ama ortalarda ve sonda güzel parçalar vardı. Kesinlikle bir ara tekrar dinleyeceğim bir albüm.

Rush never clicked with me back in the 80s. Although I was partial to a bit of prog, their mix of twiddly-diddly keyboards, earthquake level drums and a weird Canadian bloke singing Ayn Rand inspired libertarian sci-fi songs in a high pitched voice didn’t exactly appeal. I listened to the Dolby Atmos remaster of this and while the musicianship is undeniably impressive, especially Neil Peart’s drumming on the instrumental track YYZ, there are still far too many notes for my taste and the whole thing feels a bit cold and clinical. Atlas Shrugged-tastic!

tom sawyer- 5 red barchetta- 5 yyz- 4 or 5 limelight- 4 or 5 camera eye- 4 witch hunt- 4 or 5 vital signs- 4

Nerd rock

Good! Not totally my vibe but I listened twice and the guitar solo song is really, really good.

First side I enjoyed. Falls apart thereafter.

I understand why people like it…not for me though.
