Anyway, my inner redneck rocker dad/uncle enjoyed it. My true soul was trapped in a “Trucker-Diner Stereotype from a Movie” Hell.

This wasn’t the worst Stones album we’ve had. The instrumentation was actually pretty great on a lot of songs, but the lyrics and singing still sucked lmao.

I really don't like the Rolling Stones. I was hoping that the more I hear, the more I'll like. Maybe they're a deeps cuts band. This is further proof that I'm still a closeted Beatles fan. The Rolling Stones are too twangy for my like. Too Rockabilly. Too much but also not enough is a good way to describe how I feel about these dudes. 2

This was super boring and super long. I don't really have anything to say, just glad it's done. My favourite song would be Sweet Virginia, I guess, but I still didn't like it.

I spent more time trying to figure out what to rate this album than I spent actually thinking about nearly every single one of the songs. I've historically been softer on "boring" stuff if it's a genre I'm inclined towards, but this particular brand of rock n' roll has never really jivved with me. On the flipside, nothing about it struck me as something that I feel like needs to be listened to. There's a few albums I hated more than this one, but still threw them a bone because I truly found them deserving of being in the list. Exile on Main Street? Well a lotta people keep saying this is one of the best rock albums ever, and quite frankly, I simply do not understand.

I was never really big on the Rolling Stones. There's "Tumbling Dice" of course, but apart from this, "Shake Your Hips", and "Ventilator Blues", this album doesn't seem to have a lot going for it. In my opinion, it definitely isn't one of their best.

The rolling stones suck. Now that that's done, this album wasn't great. I didn't realize that they did a version of "Stop Breaking Down." So did the White stripes, and their version is better. Just meh. 1.5 - I'll round up to 2.

Too long for basically a jam album. Decent quality overall but no stand out tracks to hold your attention.

I was surprised that Rolling Stones is so boring to me. I can't understand basically anything they're saying, either because the speech is slurred, or the slang/metaphors are imprenetrable.

Meh, never really seen the appeal of the rolling stones, they don't have any of the anthems that the Beatles have in my opinion and this album is all very samey. Never listened to them growing up and won't start now unless one of their other albums on this list changes my mind.

I understand that the Stones were a fundamental force in the rock and roll scene, but I just don't like them. I've had years and years to let them into my heart, but I just can't. I don't like the sexism. I don't like the swagger. Some the component parts are brilliant. Charlie Watts, for instance, is one of the all time great drummers. I'm happy to recognize that if you want the Stones, Exile on Main Street is one of the Stones-iest albums you can lay hands on, but my listening condenses it to track after track of what blurs into the same song rather quickly. 18 takes of the same song. It reminds me a lot of a free concert I went to featuring Jimmie Vaughn of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, brother of the late Stevie Ray. He opened up his set with a competent blues in G at about 100bpm. Followed by a second song – a blues in G around 100bpm. He rounded out the set with a rousing blues in G around 100bpm. When Mr. Vaughn started picking out the same. freaking. intro. lick. on that third song, I packed it up and went home. For someone like me who doesn't really grok the words on the first, second, or even twentieth listen of a song, maybe I'm missing something – some fundamental read on the human condition. I'm not patient enough to try to parse it out, however. Listening to this album is laborious.

I think I’m just not a fan of the stones

Album overall isn't objectionable, but I wouldn't choose to listen to any of the songs. None of them particularly stick out to me as good or bad, but the style just isn't for me. Never thought of The Rolling Stones as country, but several of the songs on this album absolutely sound like it.

A classic Stones album, in the sense that it’s dreary, boring, and uninspiring.

The first song was a pleasant surprise, but then it got right back into boring dad-rock territory. Although I do have slightly more respect for them as a band now due to the charm of their rough sound, but to me it’s nothing to write home about. Definitely way to long as well.

This is my third Stones album on the list, and the third which is some perfectly serviceable bluesy songs. I have now reached the point where I might have to accept that the Rolling Stones are a bit... Boring? This is meant to be the connoisseur's Stones album, and it's overlong, and more than a little bit of a slog. This is a cocaine album on the same way that people on coke are boring, self obsessed and think that everyone cares about their thoughts when they all wish you'd pop back to the bogs for another line. Yawn. Not a one star yawn, but yawn.

It's an interminable, unmemorable, big ol' bore. At least 'I Just Want To See His Face' breaks the flow of boring blues with some swampy gospel. As if a testament to fans' preferences for blue-color music, this adventurous song has the second fewest streams on Spotify, and that's a goddamned shame.

The Rolling Stones are basically an over-indulgent blues bar band, and I'm over it. This overly wrought and overly long record has nothing at all redeeming about it. Good for them that they are leaning in to their one trick pony skill so heavily for so long I guess.

An overly long, drawn out, resounding "meeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhh", fine to have in the background but really not something I can sink my teeth into. Boomer shit. 2/5

Rolling Stones is voor mij toch niet helemaal de definitie van Rock'n'Roll. Het is mij net iets te alternatief om lekker door te pakken. Dit album is daar een heel goed voorbeeld van. Allemaal net geen hits, gewoon wat lekker muziek maken met elkaar. **

I liked the bluesy vibes, but it was a bit frantic and all over for me. None of the melodies stood out and stuck in my head.

I really like the 60s Stones. Her Satanic Majesty's Request is my favorite along with all the well known songs from that time. They seem to be disintegrating here. All that fame and fortune left them frayed at the ends. My personal enjoyability score of this album is around a 2.

I like their previous albums, but this just felt bland to me.

How is this album 1 hour and 7 minutes long? 18 tracks?! Definitely needed to be trimmed down. I still love a few tracks from this one, like Tumbling Dice an Soul Survivor, but a lot of the rest just melded together and I got pretty bored near the end. The Stones definitely work best for me in the form of Live album or Best Of listening.

Ça s'écoute bien, mais c'est long. Ce n'est pas le plus mémorable des Stones à part pour Tumbling Dice et Happy qu'on entend encore quelques fois à la radio, mais encore là, ce n'est pas les meilleures pièces du groupe. L'énergie est bonne, l'ajout de cuivres rend ça festif, mais je n'ai pas envie d'y revenir. J'aime bien la pochette par contre.

I've never been a particular fan of the Stones - they're far more of a singles band to me. I'm also not a particular fan of double albums - it's very rare that they don't overstay their welcome. As such, you can probably figure out how I feel about a Stones double album.

In the everlasting question of "Beatles or Stones?" I'm firmly in the Beatles corner. This album contains some competently played Blues and Rock'n'Roll with some Country and Folk thrown in. However, it's just not my thing. I enjoy the occasional Stones song, but none of these invites me to listen again (or to the end of the song, for that matter). 2/5

12/16/2021 Today's Album: "Exile on Main Street" by The Rolling Stones - This might be a very unpopular opinion, but I think The Rolling Stones are incredibly overrated. I understand completely why they are important to the time they were popular in and they have one of the greatest influences over classic rock, but I really think they are emblematic of all of the clichés I really don't like about classic rock. Every song they make sounds like the most generic rock and as if it is applying to the lowest common denominator. There is legitimately great musicianship and performances in this album, but the composition of most of the songs just feels so stale unless if it's one of the songs that sounds like it is trying to be a hit. There are plenty of Rolling Stones songs that I like, but I feel like they are a band whose albums are very difficult to listen to as a wholistic experience. That being said, there are some moments on this record that really shine. Sweet Virginia strips things back with a very simple tune and sorta sounds like a Bob Dylan track. Turd On The Run oddly enough has an energy to it that almost no other track on this album seems to have and woke me up a little bit. Other than that it is really hard to latch onto these tracks. They are all lovely to listen to and the production isn't half bad, but they just sound very samey. It's a lot like the early stuff the Beatles were doing in the 1950s and early 60s. General notes: Blues inspired album, nothing too remarkable but competent. The bass does not have a full sound, very thing and lifeless. Lot's of second and third voices on top of Mick's. Good guitar work. Song by song **Rocks Off:** Starts the album OK with lots of honky tonk and horns. A fun, festive tone. Nothing too memorable at first listen though. **Rip this Joint:** Classic fast rock'n'roll. **Shake your hips:** Interesting ambience, reminds me of Chris Isaak. harmonica, the blues. **Casino Boogie:** It's a.... boogie. Nothing special. **Tumbling Dice:** One of the most recognizable Stones song for a reason. Great riffing, chorus, all the Stone ingredients are here. **Sweet Virginia:** Slow folksy blues, reminds me of León Gieco. Overall a solid song. **Torn And Frayed:** Mid tempo song, slide guitar, organ. Nothing too special, but the Black Crowes borrowed heavily from this vibe. **Sweet Black Angel:** Acoustic song, no drums. Kind of boring and generic. STOPPED LISTENING HERE.

Exile on Main Street hört sich an wie ein 3 Tage wach Imperativ auf der Bourbon Street. Da muss alles durch, was in Kopf und Leber hindurch und Verstärker und Luftröhren hinaus passt. Leider sind dadurch die meisten Songs abgesehen von ihrer Energie recht mau und in der Fülle sogar nervtötend. In etwa so, als wäre man der ‘designated driver‘ eines Junggesellen Abschieds. Uff 1.6

I am utterly puzzled by universal critical acclaim this album receives. It has its moments - I particularly liked the Country rock of Torned and Frayed -but it feels interminably dull for the most part. So much Stones by numbers, very proficient, but lacking in tunes. The Stones are far better than this.

That sure was a rolling stones album, I only just listened to it and I can't remember a single track, but it was fine while it was on.

It's an okay album.

Tumbling Dice and Ventilator Blues are the standout tracks here. Most other tracks are promising but ultimately fall flat, and its clear that ZZ Top took inspration from Shake Your Hips and All Down the Line to create Lagrange and Move Me On Down The Line for their Tres Hombres album in '73. Exile sounds exactly like what it is: a hodgepodge of half-fleshed songs, recorded in three different places in three different periods of heavy drug use, arranged in an aimless sequence. 2/5: niether terrible or remarkable

I don’t know if this is just because it’s the second Rolling Stones album in a row but this was completely forgettable for me, I don’t know what the impact of this album was but i don’t care. I think it’s always bad when I can’t recognise when the album repeats but this is what happened for me.

There's not a single musical idea on this entire double album that is explored in a meaningful way. Every song is a pastiche of the last one, with there being absolutely no variety over the agonizing runtime of this record. How anyone could listen to this and think that this band is worth being compared to The Beatles is beyond me.

Whomever curated this list was a big fan of jam bands, and I gotta tell you, they really freaking suck. As a concept, they're cool, but in execution... not so much. This was an eye-opener in just the sense that I thought for the longest time that the Rolling Stones were a rock band, but here they sound like Bluegrass Hick music. It was loud, obnoxious, and not pleasant to listen to in the slightest. This might've been fascinating to listen to as a kid growing up in the 70s, but it is well past its prime, and should no longer be included in a list like this.

Exile on Main St. is all vibe over quality. The Stones have earlier albums with better production, stronger songs. Hell, even Mick Jagger sounds like he needs a tune-up here. At times, the sound is so messy it’s painful. I get the appeal of controlled chaos in small doses, but this hour-plus slog wouldn’t lose a thing by cutting half its tracks. I suspect the love for Exile comes from its raw rock ‘n’ roll energy, the charm of one-take live recordings and devil-may-care attitude. But I'm still buffled by the accolades it gets. Rolling Stones simply made tighter albums (and just before this one too).

I will never understand the success of the stones. Boring.

A quick look at the titles and you know you're in for one of the most painful moment of your life : Rocks Off, Rip This Joint, Shake Your Hips, Casino Boogie, Tumbling Dice, Loving Cup, VENTILATOR BLUES, All Down The Line... How the hell can you go so generic for 1 hour long? I mean, even AC-DC can go more creative and wild than that. The result is, of course, plain, forgettable, inoffensive and boring blues rock. It feels like an album made with fillers only. I must admit I enjoyed 2 songs : Sweet Black Angel and Let It Loose were great.

Another reason why I never got into the Stones. It's great that they managed to capture that 'vibe' they were looking for. But it's totally lost on me. There were a couple of glimmers of greatness, but I really couldn't be arsed to find out what the tracks were called. I won't bother with this again.

I'm so tired of the Stones. Why do they get so many albums here? Enough already. Give someone else a chance.

The Rolling Stones are kind of anomalous to me. I know that they're one of the most popular music artists of all time, but I've heard absolutely nothing about them. I've crossed paths with all of the other artists that Wikipedia considers to be the most commercially successful, but still haven't heard a positive word about the Stones despite their music vaguely being within my sphere of interest. Let It Bleed was insultingly bad to me with how inauthentic the pseudo-American vocals were. This albums is a massive step up simply due to not being that, but I'm still not sold on this band. All of the songs blend together, and the vocals are pretty subpar across the board.

I absolutely do not like The Rolling Stones. I have never liked the Rolling Stones. However, I also had never sat down and listened to this album in total before. Today I did that. I still do not like the Rolling Stones.

The early 70's had so much cool shit going on. One notable exception to this was the fucking Stones. Their boring over the hill blues rock sucks ass and I hate it to this day. Oh and they recorded this album while they were being tax cheats in the south of France. Yeah fuck this album and truck this band.

TWO STONES ALBUMS IN A ROW!!!! FUCK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! EAT MY ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wanted to leave it at that but i feel like i do need to explain why This is so obviously the nadir to me of a catalog i already obviously Do Not Like At All. the rolling stones doing boring, stiff, sleazy versions of black music was partly excusable on their early records cuz thats what Everyone Was Doing, and much like their contemporaries they started branching and experimenting as the 60s went on, going thru a weird sissy pop era , making that weird psychedelic thing, and by the time they went back to Rootsy music with beggars banquet they had an expanded palate that i can appreciate from afar even tho i hate listening to the actual music. but this record, the culmination of their most acclaimed stretch, is their full on Back To Basics record even more then sticky fingers, and that means the mode is purely in imitation and pastiche, which is just absolutely unholy (strangely similarly to led zepp's interminable physical graffiti, which also made the inexplicable decision to make their big double album a super monotonous back to basics affair after branching out on the last few records). just about the only thing keeping this from being one of the very *very* worst albums ive ever heard is that i can at least appreciate the hyper-dense arrangement approach...especially the rollicking pianos and organs, i like to hear those in rock songs. cant stand any other aspect of this enterprise, not the least of which that this is their second album in a ROW to have a song featuring brazenly horrible and tone-deaf slavery references, if u thought i had to give them any credit whatsoever for "respecting" who they stole their music from. i genuinely might hate mick jagger more then axl rose but i know im gonna roll appetite one of these days so i may eat my words

Sounds like an experimental album of a band still trying to identify their sound, genre, and to develop musically. You can hear Rolling Stones' classic sound. Belongs in a deep cut.

Influential (blues and grindy guitar laid groundwork for Zeppelin, metal in general, etc), but this is just not aging well for me. Feels as detached from enjoyable relevance as current pop rock for which it's heavily derivative. Beatles and Beach Boys both more palatable contemporaries for my tastes. The "rock & roll bad boy" vibe that features heavily in this project (riffs, bass lines, lyrics, Jagger vocals) feels authentic, but trite and outdated.

Two great songs but the rest of the album was nails on chalkboard for me. Couldnt get through this album fast enough to move on.

Approaching The Rolling Stones' "Exile on Main Street" after having listened to two other albums this week alone, I find myself STILL entrenched in the belief that they're overrated, especially when faced with the widely expressed claim that this is their pinnacle. In contrast to the prevailing acclaim, "Exile on Main Street" appears to me as an overloaded and chaotic collection of uninspired music. The album's problematic arrangements stand out as a significant issue, giving the impression that The Stones threw in an abundance of elements without careful consideration of the intended sounds and atmospheres. A notable instance is the excessively (and badly) embellished rendition of Robert Johnson’s “Stop Breaking Down,” diverging sharply from their intricately nuanced approach in “Love in Vain” from "Let It Bleed." Dubious additions, such as the saxophone in “Sweet Virginia” and the overpowering horns in “Rocks Off,” consistently elicit expressions of frustration, prompting me to question the reasoning behind these choices – "Why the fuck was it necessary to introduce that into the mix?" Overall, "Exile on Main Street" comes across as a gathering of individuals attempting Stones covers or a hodgepodge of hangers-on and seasoned druggies, contributing to my ongoing scepticism of The Stones' celebrated status.

The Stones just do nothing for me. It's fine. Not offensive or anything. I wouldn't outright complain if it came on. Just doesn't evoke any reaction in me at all really.

I don't feel any glee in disliking something so revered. I don't think I'm a special snowflake whose opinions matter more than others. I don't like writing negative reviews. For the most part I just want to look at how an album made me feel, and try to reverse engineer that a bit. The best music goes straight to your hips and your heart, and examining why it succeeds, or describing how it succeeds, is fun. Examining why something didn't make me feel *anything* is not fun. I don't want to have to re-listen to an album of this length to justify my opinion. I also don't want to harsh anyone's buzz with strongly worded negative opinions, like I'm trying to convince you that I'm right. This album was boring to me, but if you loved it, you're more "right" than me. Love more things imo.

Well this album is no good. There are some decent elements: the tremolo effect on jaggers voice and the horn parts. I think I might like some of the songs at the very end of the album but there was so much boring before it that this album is an easy pass.

This was hot garbage. Particularly Sweet Black Angel. YUCK!
