Reviews (page 12 of 13)

I'd really like to say that this is the album that made me finally realize that I misunderstood the Rolling Stones and they truly are a creative force. But alas, I'm once again disappointed. Sure, it's a good album, but nothing stands out and I have yet to see the allure of this band.

aldrig lyssnat men ser spännande ut

This was some mediocre rock and roll. DNF

1,5/5 didn’t finish just not my taste

Good stuff

This makes great background music to doing something else.

I feel like the Rolling Stones fall into two categories for me – stuff of theirs I think is groundbreaking, really awesome, and showcases their talent, and other stuff that makes me think they're overhyped, just average, and not my jam. This album is the latter.

Hard to believe some people prefer the Stones over the Beatles. I'll take the Beatles over this mediocre music any day.

It's okay but I really don't get the hype

Boring.

Just not a stones fan.

Other than a few tolerable songs this one was hard to get through. So noisy.

Not my favorite Stonrs album

good, but definitely not my type of thing

nada desse album que eu ja nao tenha ouvido dos beatles

litt kjedelig

Classic Stones, but I like their later stuff better

1 of these stars is for rocks off

Si aici bun de fundal

The Stones put out a lot of stuff. Not all of it was good.

Surprisingly, a real slog.

not good for the gym

Except for a very few songs the lyrics are intensely moronic. It’s the music and arrangements that make a bit of their music listenable.

If this has been by any other band than the Stones, it would have passed without notice.

Idk if we're getting unlucky with the rolls or not but I'm stoned out. Might like this more when I revisit it sometime in the future, but for now its a step below everything else I've heard from them

I don't know how many times I've listened to this album, and for the life of me, I don't get the hype. There are some really good songs (Tumbling Dice, Shake Your Hips, Ventilator Blues, Let it Loose, Shine A Light, Soul Survivor), but no really great or timeless ones. The rest of it just sounds messy and in need of editing, to my ears. Not as bad as some of their earlier albums though, I guess.

Doing this exercise has made me think, are Rolling Stones the most overrated band of all time? The gap between the hype and the actual music is massive - this is absolutely fine but very unremarkable.

I think I've said before I've basically heard enough Rolling Stones. I'm good. This isn't painful or anything, though. Not like Oasis or Coldplay. This is another example of a band doing just a really good job at the thing they've decided to do and then where I meet them is at the juncture of what they've decided to do and whether I enjoy that thing. Also that thing is co-opting.

Sounds like everything else rolling stones

Pretty good, stones are a classic

Rolling Stones is definitely a "vibe band", they have occasional great moments on a few tracks, but there's not much beyond that. It's too long, and it all melts into this messy blues jam-feeling. It feels really uneven and unfocused. Best song: Shine A Light Worst song: Turd on the Run Cover check: Boring and none of the pictures are eye-catching

I just don't get the Stones. These songs aren't good.

Incomprehensible nonesense

So this just isn’t my favorite RS album. It’s not near the bottom but it’s probably right in the dead middle. Like it’s not awful, there’s a few RS albums where it felt like they were phoning it in or just coasting. I don’t necessarily feel that way about this album, I think this is still during their peak. I just think this is their “worst peak” album, if that makes sense. It’s not chock full of hits like some of their other albums, but it also doesn’t have any like MASSIVE hits on it. It’s just a perfectly solid acceptable album from on of the greatest bands of all time. Like if a mediocre band put out this album it would be so much more impressive than one of the greatest bands ever releasing a “good” album. You know what I mean?

Dosta meh album. Ne sviđa mi se toliko rock n roll. Jedina mi je dobra pjesma “Happy”, ostale su mi dosta uninspiring

I was excited that I got a Rolling Stones album, but I did not like this. It was The Rolling Stones trying to sound country. Not for me. I only recognized one song on the album (Shake Your Hips) and I only knew that from a cover that was in one of my Zumba Wii games. I was surprised I didn’t know any other songs because I’ve heard of this album before.

I'll side with the original assessment of this album when it came out, its uneven, song quality is all over the place...mostly meh. This is yet another album that revisionists are trying to make a masterpiece, its not.

There are loads better Stones albums than this one. It’s fine, but it gets too much praise as one of the all time greats.

Not bad but didn't make me feel anything special. Probably just bc I wasn't shown this by a role model.

Self-indulgent. Yes, this is the hill I will die on.

Okay okay

I can't believe I'm about to give the Rolling Stones a 2, but this album just didn't hit. Out of an hour, I only liked three songs and I don't I'll remember them after an hour. So many of these songs sounded jumbled, or garbled(?), that I just ended up getting distracted. Favorite songs: Rocks Off Ventilator Blues

3rd Rolling Stones album from the generator and I'm starting to realize I probably won't ever like their music fully. No matter the era Mick's voice pisses me off and the catchy tunes are few and far between. Arguably there's nothing wrong with this album and it's not bad music but I just don't care 2/5

i want to rage rate this a 2 because oh my it would’ve been impossible to get through if i hadn’t been cleaning at the same time.

I initially quite like this but felt that it just droned on and on at the end. Just couldn't tell one song from another and it all just sounded very similar.

I've never understood the appeal of the Rolling Stones and I've really tried. I've listened to this album many times. So many samey melodies and tracks. Of all the albums this one is really the one I can't fathom

Every time I check out The Stones part of me is convinced that I'll finally have some kind of revelation and see what so many others seem to see in them. The only major success I've had thus far is figuring out that Gimme Shelter and Paint It Black are really fucking good (and there are a couple of other Stones songs I go back to as well). Although, going into this, I was feeling pretty good, this album *is* held in extremely high regard, and I could only imagine there must be something here. And in short, there are things about Exile On Main Street that I like, but this is largely an hour plus of music I don't feel very strongly about. Firstly, I'd like to say I think I get what The Stones were going for here, this very much feels like a "sum of it's parts album", but it just never really came together for me. I do like the overall production aesthetic here, there's plenty of rock and roll grit, and I think everyone is doing what they need to do to achieve the sound. I'd like to single out Mick Jagger's vocals in particular, for being a kind of loose and mushy that makes it seem like he's using his voice more like an instrument than anything. I think this all works best on songs like the opener, Rocks Off, which is probably my favorite here. They really sell their particular rock sound, and there are some really great lines here, "The sunshine bores the daylights out of me" hits in particular. However, nothing else here quite reaches this high again, although there are some other songs I like: Ventilator Blues and All Down The Line, among others are also pretty good. Although my biggest issue I think is that I just don't really like The Stones' brand of blues rock. I think my problem may be that while I have no doubt The Stones truly love the (predominantly black) art that they are inspired by, their mode of appreciation seems to be to attempt to clone it so exactly that their whole shtick feels way more put on (to me at least) than I think it would have otherwise. I actually think it may be more distracting here than on some of their other stuff I have heard, like it really feels like they want me to think they're from New Orleans or something. Anyways, aside from this, I do have some other more tangible complaints about this album. It feels like they're trying to do the "song fragments that create a coherent work" thing, but some of these "fragments" are like 3 minutes long so they just feel like underdeveloped songs. I Want To See His Face has a cool sound, but it may be the most egregious example of this I can think of here. It also feels like The Stones don't know how to end a song. A trick they pull out again and again is repeating a couple bars of music and maybe a single line for slightly longer than you want, then abruptly stopping. It happens quite a bit, and feels really awkward to me. Like I said, there is some stuff I appreciate here, I like a couple of songs, I like the production quality, it just doesn't come together for me. I did at least add a couple of songs to "The List of Rolling Stones Songs I Like" so I got a little out of this. But I really can't tell if I'm closer or farther from figuring The Stones out, maybe it'll happen someday, maybe it won't, we'll see.

Oh no not another Stones album. Maybe this one will be good. Over an hour later…nope

Some good tracks but over all a sprawling mess of boredom.

Could have been a three if I actually like Mick Jagger's voice

What a mess. Muddy sound, incoherent vocals, saxes and horns mixed too loud, a band drugged up so badly they can't tell if they want to sound like delta blues or a contemporary 1970s rock band. I mean, if you like the mess, then this record is for you. Just didn't make sense to me. Life is short.

Too samey, only the harmonica stood out and not in a good way. Sorry dads.

I forgot to listen until like the last 2 songs but i was still vibin'

I tried really hard to like the Rolling Stones when I was younger, and this is their most beloved/acclaimed record I'm pretty sure. The problem is that it's just too fucking long. It's 18 songs long and over an hour. This is from a time when people would sit with one record for a long time and play it over and over, but it feels of its time to me and lacks a timelessness that makes it kind of hard to sit through.

Sounds like a jam session to me and not a very good one

Eh, it's The Rolling Stones, you know what you're getting. And personally, I don't need this much of it. More and more I find Stones tracks to just be aimless blues jamming, like what my uncle does on Saturday nights in the garage with a Jack & Coke.

A classic one

Given the length I had hoped for better

Kerniger Rolling Stones Sound, nicht meine Lieblings Musik aber ok

This was okay, but I didn't love it. I know it's legendary Stones album, but I'm just not a very big fan of the Stones to begin with. I'm sorry to say it, but it seemed really long and I just really didn't enjoy much of it. Two stars.

This is the first album by The Rolling Stones I listened to and it was kind of underwhelming. It was largely a blues rock album and blues is just not a genre that I find interesting. Although it was not bad the tracks just felt bland and boring to me. Nothing stood out. Nothing made me want to listen to it again. I felt like I was listening to the same song over and over again.

Okay album. I was never that interested in the RS, but I did see them live in 2024 and gained a big appreciation for their musicianship and ability to deliver a great show. Mick Jagger is still amazing and incomparable. That being said, this album has Tumbling Dice, but the rest of the tracks are solid R&B and soul but relatively uninteresting.

My least favorite stones album.

Really just not into this era of Stones. Hard for me to listen to and enjoy.

I simply don’t get the Rolling Stones. Warmed over, derivative, stolen blues, the only reason they are revered is because they did it first. It’s not bad, but that’s only because it’s inoffensive sonic wallpaper. Beige music.

The Stones were great at making singles, but not good at all at making an engaging, encompassing record as their contemporaries could. Exile On Main Street is the shining example of this - 18 songs but not a lot to remember for this. Nothing offensive on this, but many forgettable tracks best left in the past. Best Tracks: - Happy - Let It Loose Worst Tracks: - Turd On The Run Rating: 5/10

its got good tracks, its got hopeless stuff, EOMS is a crazy mix of everything and nothing that has bluesrock as its only theme, which is not what a great record is supposed to look like. Just listen to some of the songs, theres some good stuff on here, its just not complete. Favorite track: Tumblin dice. Overall score: 4.2/10

i have a certain amount of respect and appreciation for the Rolling Stones because there is a pretty huge number of bands and artists i love who in all likelihood wouldn’t exist without them. having said that, i do not care for the Rolling Stones one bit. i find them obtuse and annoying, overly worshipful of blues/blues rock without really elevating the form at all. on some level, all of their songs, style, image, feel like they just *need* you to understand how cool they are. they have nothing for me. i’ll give this one extra star for not having any of the big hits that really crawl under my skin and drive me insane, but i really tried to give Exile a fair shake and only ended up making it halfway through.

it's fine

I’ve never really been into The Rolling Stones, and this album did not change that. It was a long album and all the songs felt pretty much the same to me. I constantly felt like I had heard the track before already. There were not really many standouts, and especially with a runtime of over an hour, it turns into quite a boring listen. Favourite tracks: Rocks Off, Let It Loose, Shine A Light

I'm sorry I just don't like the rolling stones. This album feels like they're trying to be the beatles without plagarizing them

Really not what i expected, only liked a few songs

It's okay, but it's not The Beatles.

porra eu não suporto mais rolling stones CHEGA NÃO É LEGAL ASSIM

definitivamente é rolling stones. 67 minutos de puro bluezinho feito por britanicos que queriam muito ser estadunidenses. meia boca.

I’ve been delaying writing this review because I don’t know what to say. I hadn’t ever really listened to a full Stones album admittedly. Exile On Main Street was shaking in its mediocrity. This is clearly the cool kids album. I currently am not running with the cool crowd I guess. Needs more listens. 5.8/10

I have yet to listen to a Rolling Stones album that isn't "just okay", and boy this is not the exception to that.

if i was a Black Panther in the 70's, i would have thrown a molotov at the Rolling Stones' tour bus for "Sweet Black Angel". imagine going to jail as a political prisoner and the biggest white rock group in the world writes a song calling you a pin up girl and using the words "free de sweet black slave". i'd be pissed. otherwise, "Exile on Main St."'s biggest crime is how boilerplate it is for the Stones' sound. it's treated as this revelation to their sound, but i just feel like it's the same bluesy stuff that fades into the background of a sports bar instead of something really special. even the good songs with memorable parts like "Let it Loose" or "Tumbling Dice" basically get by on how homey and folksy they sound instead of any real interesting or unique sound. if i squint my ears, i can trick myself into thinking in listening to The Band. you can hate Sticky Fingers all you want, but at least it's got "Wild Horses" and "Moonlight Mile". "Exile on Main St." doesn't have tracks like that. the closest it ever gets to it is "Shine a Light", which is diminished by how much it sounds like the worse tracks around it. it's a The Beatles [White Album] with all the interesting experiments replaced with more messy blues, an artistic statement that says "this is what we are" by staying the course instead of exploding into a million different directions. it's probably a lot better to listen to if you're drunk, and that's not a compliment. i can't hate the Rolling Stones. Scorsese's one of my favorite directors, he likes the Stones, so i can tolerate them for Marty. but i can't really make any excuses for "Exile". it's just a boring, bluesy sludge dumped on the ground. consistency isn't everything if the substance offers no real taste.

I get that they're influential and this is one of their best, but it doesn't really grab and never has.

My third Stones album so far. I don't know what it is, they just don't do it for me. Like, it's fine, but nothing on this album really made me *feel* anything. My choice for my playlist is Shine A Light, which I do really like.

I'm not quite a stones fan but this was quite good indeed

This album is a real letdown after so many greater earlier albums. Not much variation in sound from song to song. Boring.

I cant seem to get into The Rolling Stones. I dont know why, but their style of rock never really appealed to me.

I like some of the stones' songs but these ones don't do it for me. The horns are a nice touch tho

This has "Tumbling Dice" on it...which I would argue is the best song the Stones ever wrote. And it also has 17 other songs that are all...alright, I guess. Is this the Stones album I put on when I have the rare urge to listen to a Stones album? No, it is not. But I will put on Tumbling Dice.

Sen tyylistä rokkendaalia, että ei omaan makuun istu.

Just listen to the short of Spotify: nothing new, just another annoying Stones lp. Drop

Other than sweet black angle, the whole thing sounded like 1 song, start to finish. No good hooks. Good piano on Let it Loose, reminiscent of The Office theme song.

I can appreciate the album for the music, but I've never been a fan of Jagger...

I don’t like the Stones as much as I often think I do. This is supposedly their best, but it’s quite hit or miss for me. It starts off strong, but by track 2 I’m usually annoyed enough to turn it off. After forcing myself to listen to it as a whole, and while there are a couple of other songs that I like here (Tumbling Dice is awesome), I wasn’t missing a whole lot by not listening to the whole thing before. I’m still baffled by these Brits playing shitty versions of American blues music and getting away with it for several albums in the 60s and 70s. Not to mention the way Mick is singing throughout. It’s like when Dylan tried to sing with a different voice on Nashville Skyline. Like, okay, sure but why? You sound obnoxious. Knock it off! It just doesn’t resonate with me. How is this supposedly better than Sticky Fingers?

Maybe three good songs on this.

Never been the biggest Stones fan, this was just okay for me. I appreciate and acknowledge the influence they have had on the Rock world, but this album feels played out and bogged down by today's standards

I had high hopes, but this thing is way too long with a noticeable lack of hooks. Disappointed.

didnt like, not sure what all the fuss is about

Not my liking. Too slow.

As I’ve mentioned before I was never a big Stones fan and this album typifies why. Great musicianship throughout but after a while I become bored at the same sounding blues which is the Stones’ trademark sound. I do like one or two Stones tracks which are probably their most popular and famous but none of them are on here. Tumbling Dice is perhaps their best known song on this album. It says it all when I say that it is the best track on the album but still one I dislike. 2/5 20/12/24

Oh gosh, another Stones album. Pretentious bullcrap.

As exciting as speedrunning time management games

Why does this have to be a double album? I just don't get rolling stones. It's just a bunch of drunks playing mediocre blues. maybe I'm missing something

Man, for something lauded as their 'best work' and 'a culmination of a string of the band's highly critically successful albums', I was hoping for a little more than what ended up feeling like a demoralizingly long and repetitive set of British folks getting through a country blues binge. Not the worst performances from them or anything but I felt like I had heard all there was to hear less than halfway through. It really started to bother me by the end

I honestly don't mind the Stones for the most part, definitely classic rip off black people boomer rock - I don't think I'd ever have gone out of my way to listen to a whole album though. The biggest issue here is how samey this shit is. Listening to Rocks Off I was kinda excited to get into this, but by halfway through an album of borderline sonically identical, formulaic shit, I was begging for it to be done. By the time it got to the final track I was so happy to be done with this. Good god this did not need to be over an hour. Pick out any track on this album and I would struggle to hum the tune. It just turns into white noise after the 20 minute mark, which sadly is only a third of the way through this.

It's mad that the 'best Stones album' contains zero tracks that I have ever heard before. I can't help feeling 'best' here is a title given by people trying very hard to be 'cool'.

It’s just Mick making nonsense noises on top of music you’ve heard better versions of.

This album is extremely overrated, though I respect that it's widely acclaimed. One of its most glaring issues is its excessive length. The album drags on without offering enough engaging or varied material to justify its duration. The tracks often blend into one another, lacking the distinct qualities that make each song stand out. This results in a listening experience that is monotonous and tiresome.

okay, i like some of the stones songs, but these didnt feel as fun to me

Didn’t hate it, didn’t love it. A lot of the songs went on for a long time, more than needed. Overall good sound, usually love The Rolling Stones but not this one as much. Oh well, still a good time.

Every time a new side came on I had a glimmer of hope that it was my music player auto-playing a *different* Stones album but alas, it was still this one. I really disliked this.

That sure was one of The Rolling Stones albums of all time

This was fine.... I'm not a huge Stones guy.

For what I can only assume is a B-Sides collection this was still pretty bad. Still, plus one for horns.

Ohh those old stones, swear they got like 2 good songs, neither on this album.

Boring. I have this on LP and have listened to it quite a lot and my expectation is always higher than the outcome.

Ce n'est certainement pa s le meilleur de tous leurs albums. Quand on sait dans quelle conditions il fut créer , rien d'étonnant

I had higher expectations for every song to be a banger. I actually liked fewer than most

Nothing caught me about this album, it just felt long

Pretty good! Sounds like bad Springsteen for some reason (bad Springsteen is still good music, of course)

Man oh man, most overrated band of all time? I think they are at least a contender.

Albumi #53, 19.09.2024 Rollareiden yksi kehutuimmista levyistä vuodelta 1972. En ole koskaan ollut mikään suuri Rolling Stones -fani, eikä tämäkään taideteos muuttanut asiaa.

Underwhelming, first album I had to push myself through

That was so unremarkable, I would have believed it if someone told me it was their debut.

Hm. Not what I would have picked as the stones' finest or most memorable album. What it does well, though, is showcase how effectively British music laundered the blues and sold it back to America as good ol' white guy rock and roll.... But the stones have always seemed to me like British expats who decided that America was much more their home vibe.... But maybe music shouldn't have a geography. Maybe music is fair trade and sounds are there to feel... Maybe I'm writing nonsense because this album was nothing special for me....

Just incredibly boring.

I liked Shine a Light, the rest kind of bored me

5/10 Not keen.

i was told i would be gathering no moss, but here we are

Just not my thing really

какой-то тухлый ролин стоунс, даже удивительно

This used to be a favorite but I haven’t listened in a while, and it seems my taste has changed. There’s a bit too much honky tonk influence and general cacophony for my liking, and the vocal performances are wildly uneven. Piano’s effectiveness is similarly inconsistent. There are flashes of greatness (Shine a Light, Soul Survivor) but they’re few and far between. Guess I’ll revisit this in another ten years and see what I think then. Listened to: walking on LVRT. Favorite tracks: Sweet Virginia, Ventilator Blues, Shine a Light

The 1001 is making me realise that The Rolling Stones are probably the most overrated band in history, for me personally. This was so dull. I can't stand Mick Jagger's voice - somehow both mumbly and whiny. Fave Tracks: I Just Want to See His Face 2.3/5

This album has some decent energy but it sometimes feels kind of hollow. Like you're drinking a 6-pack but it's only 4% beer. There were some highlights though - Rocks Off, Rip This Joint, Tumbling Dice, and Happy were all nice, and finally Let It Loose was probably my favorite song on the album. Good energy, would probably be fun to see a live performance with extended instrumentals, but I won't revisit this album.

Admittedly went into this with a reluctant heart. And well… sad to report that I’m still not anywhere near a fan. This album was a drudge for me. At points reminiscing 50s rockabilly, pulling at threads of gospel, some blues - but never definitely any or all of those. Felt surface level to all approaches. From the opening song, to the mid tracks - I found it aimless and lacking cohesion… ultimately nothing for me to latch onto. I was constantly asking: what’s going on here? Might be purposeful and rather RTS MO and that’s awesome! maybe a matter of their eclectic range —- Just not for me. :( boring me, but this bored me lol. At some points, particular moments in songs did resonate with me: Folksy, rhythmic opening to sweet black angel - yet it lost me with a seemingly meandering approach as it continued and never really giving that oomph I kept wishing for. Harmonic, bluegrassy Turd on the Run against a backdrop of cruising down an open road getting into some foolishness was a fun listen Really dug the final track - did feel culminating whereas other song placements left me wondering if there was a purpose Overall, not enjoyable for me, but intrigued based on their general acclaim

I have some reviews queued up, so I'm going to make this quick: #22 ctrl-c crtl-v: Outside of whatever Stones songs I happened to hear im my life, I'd never really paid attention to them. The couple of hits I like had always been enough for me. [...] Q̷u̷i̷t̷e̷ ̷c̷o̷o̷l̷ ̷h̷o̷w̷ ̷r̷o̷u̷g̷h̷ ̷i̷t̷'̷s̷ ̷p̷r̷o̷d̷u̷c̷e̷d̷ ̷a̷t̷ ̷t̷i̷m̷e̷s̷,̷ ̷l̷i̷k̷e̷ ̷b̷u̷s̷k̷e̷r̷s̷ ̷o̷n̷ ̷t̷h̷e̷ ̷s̷t̷r̷e̷e̷t̷. But. The Rolling Stones have never really appealed to me. I wondered if that might change with this project and apparently this is considered their best album by many but they still don’t do anything for me. Rating: 2

Not a huge fan of The Rolling Stones, so this was a drag.

I got the point by the end of disc 1, this doesn't need to be a double LP. I'm sorry, I respect the Stones and they have Gimme Shelter, which remains one of my favorite songs, but 90% of their catalogue does nothing for me. I could probably count the number of songs by them I come back to on 2 hands. Tirade aside, this isn't obnoxious like a certain other legacy act with massive unearned presence in pop culture. Metallica's music is legitimately annoying outside of Hit the Lights and The Four Horsemen, whereas the Stones are pretty digestible, just low calorie (outside of a handful that I love). Big props to Shine a Light on here too, dunno why it clicked but it did.

Perhaps the biggest band I couldn’t give a flying fig about. Maybe the generator will change my mind… not on the basis of this album.

There is far too much rolling stones on this list. Like I said before, their style is very dry and uninteresting. There are hardly any memorable songs other than shine a light. 2/5.

This is one of the Stones most acclaimed albums? Why? Straightforward, well executed blues rock, but nothing exciting here.

Much like Sticky Fingers, this just sounds like a bunch of drunk Englishman playing shitty blues

Easy listening, but nothing terribly dynamic about the album compared to some of their other works. Rather long for what it is.

Noteworthy songs - 808080808 Magical Dream - Kinda catchy synth, but the rest is bland. Ancodia - Good background noise. Cobra Bora - Actually kind of cool, reminds me of Bomberman Hero. Pacific 202 - N64 vibes, but melody isn't great. Donkey Doctor - Nothing too special, weird ending. 808080808 - Really cool beginning. A little slow in the middle but stays interesting enough. Sunrise - Nothing remarkable. The Fat Shadow - Eerie. Very short.

A bit meh for me

Serviceable but pretty ordinary, bluesy rock -- nothing stood out to me.

This album felt flat to me, hard to describe but it could be the way it was recorded I couldn’t get through. 2.0

Fine. Lots of energy.

Some good

Coincidentally, I used to work at an office right outside Flushing-Main street station. There was a busker at the entrance who used to play Rolling Stones covers. One day I decided to stop and observe - not the busker, but the reactions of the passer-bys to his music. Well, not surprisingly, he drew about as much attention as the salad bar at a Chinese buffet. I asked him if he knew any Taylor Swift songs. He did, and they seemed to be a bit more of a hit, and he even got some change thrown his way. From that day, I never did see him outside the station anymore, but a year later, while watching Jimmy Kimmel late one night (Scarlett Jo was on, sue me!), the musical guest came on, and wouldn't you know it, it was the busker from Main street, Ed they called him, Ed Sheeran. 2 completely irrelevant anecdotes, made up by me out of pure boredom induced by this album, out of 5

Admittedly, i am not a big blues rock guy, so i have always been luke warm on The Stones. But man… this album… it’s just… boring.

Boring honky tonk

Kinda wanted to refrain from rating this but it won’t let me. Not so sure I liked it but Rocks Off and especially Sweet Virginia were great songs, I will surely be spinning that one for a while. Don’t pay the 2/5 much mind, it could and maybe should be higher lol

Was curious about this because I felt like I’ve never really given the Stones a serious listen. The nature of this (fun and exciting) listening experience has left me still feeling like I haven’t given them a fair shake but I did listen to the whole album and found it mostly annoying and uninteresting. I quite dislike Mick Jagger’s style. Very little for me to latch onto otherwise

It's wasn't terrible, but I was sure glad when the album was over. This one's not for me.

Adoro a banda mas esse álbum é apenas mediano pra mim. Tudo muito o mesmo.

I was fucking w it pero llego un punto donde todo me sonaba igual y estaba rezando a todos los dioses paganos a que se terminara este shitshow. I get it, they invented the wheel, and I'm grateful to Mick Jagger's existence pero no puedo fingir que esos power chords y el acento británico no me hace ruido en el oido. its a gentle, not so harsh 4/10.

This was quite forgettable which I didn’t expect from The Rolling Stones!

Rock, 1972, 2

Ja, irgendwie goofy auch

This album is beyond derivative, but I guess that describes 95% of the Stones catalog. I can’t stand Jagger’s whiny, fake southern American accent. I can’t listen to jangly, generic, loose American southern blues rock for more than a couple of minutes. I can’t see what the fuss is about The Rolling Stones. They recorded barely a handful of almost-great songs (Sympathy for the Devil being the pinnacle), but none of them are on this album. I’d much rather listen to Jet, Cold Chisel or ZZ Top when I want rough, bluesy rock, and early Elton John, Alice Cooper or Dire Straits when I want piano and strat-based boogie and story telling.

This went on for way too long. Nothing good, nothing bad, completely generic in my opinion

White guys playing black music but worse.

Never been a fan of The Stones

Decent not my favorite stones album

Not my fave.

Not too bad.

Remembered enjoying the Rock and Roll Circus back in the day, but never listened to any Stones since. Wasn't really feeling this album. It's not technically bad, just didn't resonate with me. Has a few nice moments though.

I just don't like the Rolling Stones -- I keep finding myself not enjoying their songs that didn't stay in the mainstream. Maybe they were revolutionary for their time, but I can't get into them. This is my 3rd or 4th album from them, and no dice. 2*. One thing I'm learning is that the Rolling Stones drew from blues waaay more than I thought. Highlights: sweet virginia

I am a Stones fan, but they are a singles band. I have tried to love this album since I was teen in the 80s but if was boring then and it’s boring now.Tumbling Dice and Shine A Light are highlights

Gear: DCA ÆON 2 Noire Mix: 👌 Musik: 😕 Wertung: 🤔🤔/5

Like most double albums, this would be better as one record. The 'young(-ish) rich drugged-up blokes locked in a basement together' vibe does wear thin after the first 9 songs or so. Shake Your Hips is a good intro to Slim Harpo for the uninitiated, and there are some classic songs on here (Happy, Tumbling Dice and a few others) but in terms of the number of songs included: just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

Not my style but fun music. Don’t love the vocals.

This album made me realise once again that I don't like Rolling Stones. Well, ok, this is solid rock'n roll, no doubt, it would have been a great album in the mid-60s... But, come on! This was released in 1972!!! Deep Purple's Machine Head came out the same year; Led Zeppelin's IV, Pink Floyd's Echoes and Yes' Frigile (with Roundabout) came out a year ago! And these are only those who come to my mind when remembering early 70s. And yet, Rollings got stuck in the 60s. To me, this album is so outdated and such a waste of time.

Okay, I must come clean. I never liked Mick Jagger's voice. Listening to this album, I finally was able to pinpoint exactly what has irked me off their music all this time. I guess I'm just not a fan of Jagger's twangy, drunk-on-eccentricity, aggresive voice, and that might perhaps be becuase it's become a standard. When you think of a rock star, you think of Mick Jagger. When you think of a a pure rock song, you think of any Stones' song wandering across their discography. The sound of the Rolling Stones have been copied, and squeezed onto every rock band that came after. "Exile On Main Street" was recorded with the Stones running away from the British law, secluded in a villa in France to sing about hedonism and sex. If that isn't the most rockstar story for an album i don't know what it is. What surprised me is that for an English rock band singing in France, this album sounds as un-European as possible. "Exile On Main Street" is infused with strums of blues and American roots. The album tastes like an opened beer outside of the truck driver's window, with Jagger sound with a slight southern accent, as if he's trying to sing amidst a drunkard ruckus in the saloon. Album-kicker "Rocks Off" is lively, fun and energetic, and features a strong brass section. "Shine a Light" stars a prominent piano and a gospel choir. "Sweet Virginia" is also a stand-out from the album, being a very compelling and groovy ballad. These songs are proof that this album is at its peak when the sound goes beyond an electric guitar, bass and drums. Another highlight is "Tumbling Dice", with its catchy choir-y chorus. Unfonrtunately, the album didn't stike out to me as anything special, with every song sounding too similar from each other, and the album blending into a repetitive presentation of "raw real music, not like the garbage pop kids listen to this day". Songs like "Stop Breaking Down" or "Turd on the Run" don't add much to the conversation. It doesn't help that the album is over an hour long. As much credit as I can give them from having a cohesive and influential sound, I can't help but become bored towards the second half of the album. Sorry, Mick Jagger. Maybe next time. 5.5/10 Favorite songs: Tumbling Dice, Rocks Off, Sweet Virginia

pretty classic rock. toe tapping music. a little boring.

5/10 Severely disappointing. Also too long for how little is on here. Highlights: Tumbling Dice Shine a Light

Inte min musikstil Dessutom alldeles för mycket sexistiska texter för min smak...

I've not heard of this album before. I don't think I've heard the music either. I am not a great Rolling Stones fan. I've heard their music and its been something 'Rock-and-Roll' ish without much appetite in it. There were some tracks in this which were blues-ish which I found appealing. Mick's vocals are not my thing. There is a twang, or whine, which doesn't work for me. The rest, it just is noise. I want to give it 3 stars, but I know I won't seek this album out again. I'd be surprised if I heard any further tracks from it in my life. 2 stars, I don't hate it, I finished listening to it (twice even) but it's not for me.

Wasn't really a Stones fan. Some songs of course are classics and I enjoy from time to time.

slightly boring and long

I dont like rolling stones

This is what the real rolling stones sound like. Not bad but it doesnt excite it that much. Not bad but not great either

Very rock n roll. Heavy blues influence. No standout moments

This has been my least favorite Stones album so far. I just didn't connect with it at all. Probably should be a 3 but I want to rate it lower than other Stones albums I liked more and already gave a 3.

Did not expect the Stones to be so old time blues sounding.

This album is too long. Some songs feel like noise only. Some feel very disjoined from the rest of the songs. Wanted to enjoy. Didn't. Favorite was probably Loving Cup.

I mean Rolling Stones is classic, but not for me. It was great cult of lamb background music but overall the tax evading album was mid.

I was completely zoned out. None of the songs caught my attention. I am sure this is a classic for a lot of people, it just did not do anything for me.

Meh. I got a little bored

12 bar blues was around for half a century before this but these lads do nothing to advance it.

11/24/23. Eh, didn’t really feel anything with this album, and I like a lot of Rolling Stones songs. Can’t say I’ll listen to this one again.

Don't see the appeal of The Rolling Stones.

Samey samey. Cool harmonica but a bit boring overall.

Boring

I grew up listening to The Rolling Stone, but not this album. It's ok, but nothing special.

Isn't this suppose to be one of the greatest albums of all time? It sounds like another iteration of that generic blues rock sound. There are occasional nice riffs and tunes, but overall, it's underwhelming to be honest.

Boogie rock, amerikansk södern vibbar. Shake your hips hade ett härligt flow. 2.8 i helhet på albumet då det mesta inte är helt min stil

didn’t like

Wasn't particularly impressed by this album, but it wasn't irritating to listen to.

Eh, it was okay, not a huge stones fan I think

Lite sådär, inte superintressant.

Good ol' rock n' roll

Nothing to say

Boring as heck.

We all keep kind of changing our metrics. If I like the album enough I’ll go by each song with a rating and blurb. If I don’t like it I will probably format it with nonsense. Anyway, my inner redneck rocker dad/uncle enjoyed it. My true soul was trapped in a “Trucker-Diner Stereotype from a Movie” Hell.

Don’t think the stones are for me

Mostly boring dad rock.

This wasn’t the worst Stones album we’ve had. The instrumentation was actually pretty great on a lot of songs, but the lyrics and singing still sucked lmao.

not my cup of tea

I really don't like the Rolling Stones. I was hoping that the more I hear, the more I'll like. Maybe they're a deeps cuts band. This is further proof that I'm still a closeted Beatles fan. The Rolling Stones are too twangy for my like. Too Rockabilly. Too much but also not enough is a good way to describe how I feel about these dudes. 2

This was super boring and super long. I don't really have anything to say, just glad it's done. My favourite song would be Sweet Virginia, I guess, but I still didn't like it.

7/10/ Good background music but no classics

I spent more time trying to figure out what to rate this album than I spent actually thinking about nearly every single one of the songs. I've historically been softer on "boring" stuff if it's a genre I'm inclined towards, but this particular brand of rock n' roll has never really jivved with me. On the flipside, nothing about it struck me as something that I feel like needs to be listened to. There's a few albums I hated more than this one, but still threw them a bone because I truly found them deserving of being in the list. Exile on Main Street? Well a lotta people keep saying this is one of the best rock albums ever, and quite frankly, I simply do not understand.

Det hjälper inte att ni heter Rolling Stones.

I was never really big on the Rolling Stones. There's "Tumbling Dice" of course, but apart from this, "Shake Your Hips", and "Ventilator Blues", this album doesn't seem to have a lot going for it. In my opinion, it definitely isn't one of their best.

The rolling stones suck. Now that that's done, this album wasn't great. I didn't realize that they did a version of "Stop Breaking Down." So did the White stripes, and their version is better. Just meh. 1.5 - I'll round up to 2.

Too long for basically a jam album. Decent quality overall but no stand out tracks to hold your attention.

sounded less culture vulture-ish than the other Stones stuff I've listened to. good job!

Fav: Tumbling dice Least fav:torn and frayed

Mola, aunque he de reconocer que sobre todo me gustan los clasicazos, y este, pocos (LNB)

I was surprised that Rolling Stones is so boring to me. I can't understand basically anything they're saying, either because the speech is slurred, or the slang/metaphors are imprenetrable.

Good blues rock tunes, if that's what your into. I'm not a Stones guy I guess?

3rd listen. Favorite song: “Sweet Virginia”. I just don’t like this album and I don’t like The Rolling Stones.

p284. 1972. 2 stars. Further evidence that the Stones are a great singles band and an average album band. There are no standout songs, lots of filler, and it sounds like it was mixed in a neglected aquarium.

Meh, never really seen the appeal of the rolling stones, they don't have any of the anthems that the Beatles have in my opinion and this album is all very samey. Never listened to them growing up and won't start now unless one of their other albums on this list changes my mind.

Have to say I skipped a lot of the album. Not a big Stones fan.

Not a fan of The Rolling Stones and this album hasn't changed my mind. There's something about the singing that really annoys me. There are some good tracks here but there are far too many duds. Highlights: Rocks Off Tumbling Dice

It’s okay. Kinda felt dragged out tbh

I understand that the Stones were a fundamental force in the rock and roll scene, but I just don't like them. I've had years and years to let them into my heart, but I just can't. I don't like the sexism. I don't like the swagger. Some the component parts are brilliant. Charlie Watts, for instance, is one of the all time great drummers. I'm happy to recognize that if you want the Stones, Exile on Main Street is one of the Stones-iest albums you can lay hands on, but my listening condenses it to track after track of what blurs into the same song rather quickly. 18 takes of the same song. It reminds me a lot of a free concert I went to featuring Jimmie Vaughn of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, brother of the late Stevie Ray. He opened up his set with a competent blues in G at about 100bpm. Followed by a second song – a blues in G around 100bpm. He rounded out the set with a rousing blues in G around 100bpm. When Mr. Vaughn started picking out the same. freaking. intro. lick. on that third song, I packed it up and went home. For someone like me who doesn't really grok the words on the first, second, or even twentieth listen of a song, maybe I'm missing something – some fundamental read on the human condition. I'm not patient enough to try to parse it out, however. Listening to this album is laborious.

I think I’m just not a fan of the stones

Album overall isn't objectionable, but I wouldn't choose to listen to any of the songs. None of them particularly stick out to me as good or bad, but the style just isn't for me. Never thought of The Rolling Stones as country, but several of the songs on this album absolutely sound like it.

A classic Stones album, in the sense that it’s dreary, boring, and uninspiring.

The first song was a pleasant surprise, but then it got right back into boring dad-rock territory. Although I do have slightly more respect for them as a band now due to the charm of their rough sound, but to me it’s nothing to write home about. Definitely way to long as well.

This is my third Stones album on the list, and the third which is some perfectly serviceable bluesy songs. I have now reached the point where I might have to accept that the Rolling Stones are a bit... Boring? This is meant to be the connoisseur's Stones album, and it's overlong, and more than a little bit of a slog. This is a cocaine album on the same way that people on coke are boring, self obsessed and think that everyone cares about their thoughts when they all wish you'd pop back to the bogs for another line. Yawn. Not a one star yawn, but yawn.

Frekar mikil vonbrigði.

It's an interminable, unmemorable, big ol' bore. At least 'I Just Want To See His Face' breaks the flow of boring blues with some swampy gospel. As if a testament to fans' preferences for blue-color music, this adventurous song has the second fewest streams on Spotify, and that's a goddamned shame.

Too busy, too long. Not my favorite Stones record by a long margin

The Rolling Stones are basically an over-indulgent blues bar band, and I'm over it. This overly wrought and overly long record has nothing at all redeeming about it. Good for them that they are leaning in to their one trick pony skill so heavily for so long I guess.

An overly long, drawn out, resounding "meeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhh", fine to have in the background but really not something I can sink my teeth into. Boomer shit. 2/5

Orkade intw lyssna hur gubbigt

I liked the bluesy vibes, but it was a bit frantic and all over for me. None of the melodies stood out and stuck in my head.

I wanted to like this Stones album a whole lot more than I did. Maybe the next one will click

I can feel mick jagger spitting on my face while he’s singing. I can smell keith richards lurking, he smells like cigarettes and bourbon.

Something tells me the Stones put on a great show, but, for me, there isn’t anything spectacular here. 2.75/5

This just sounded like they were trying to write songs in all the styles of rock music that existed at the time without trying to do anything new or interesting.

It’s fine. I like some Stones stuff, but they’re not my thing.

Very dated album with no surprises.

Not a huge stones fan, songs feel very repetitive with nothing that really stood out as amazing.

Not my favorite album by them.

I really like the 60s Stones. Her Satanic Majesty's Request is my favorite along with all the well known songs from that time. They seem to be disintegrating here. All that fame and fortune left them frayed at the ends. My personal enjoyability score of this album is around a 2.

I like their previous albums, but this just felt bland to me.

How is this album 1 hour and 7 minutes long? 18 tracks?! Definitely needed to be trimmed down. I still love a few tracks from this one, like Tumbling Dice an Soul Survivor, but a lot of the rest just melded together and I got pretty bored near the end. The Stones definitely work best for me in the form of Live album or Best Of listening.

Na lang nadenken waarom dit niet werkt voor mij, kan ik eigenlijk maar met 1 ding komen: Die stem van Jagger vind ik gewoon zaad!

Alright, not my favorite Don't love Mick Jagger's voice after three straight songs lol

🤷‍♂️

Didn’t really enjoy it. Not my favorite collection of songs from the Stones. No memorable melody’s, songs or lyrics

I've never been a particular fan of the Stones - they're far more of a singles band to me. I'm also not a particular fan of double albums - it's very rare that they don't overstay their welcome. As such, you can probably figure out how I feel about a Stones double album.

Would have been a 3 if it had wasted 45 minutes of my time instead of an hour and 45.

tuurd on the run, tuurd on the ruuuun. wait, what, its not macca? once you've heard the rolling stones do their r'n'b thing for about 5 songs you're not going to hear anything new in the next 45 songs, or however many are on this album. fairly tedious.

Some okay rock and roll. Gets repetitive after a while

No me atrapó

Everyone seems to love this one, but with the exception of a couple of songs to me it’s just a big pile of meandering shit, like The Band’s Last Waltz or something.

To my mind, incredibly overrated. A meandering, forgettable mess of distinctly average blues rock.

I wish I liked the stones more, to me it's just more of the same.

Why is this album so highly rated? A bunch of boring songs sung by a man with a lousy voice.

In the everlasting question of "Beatles or Stones?" I'm firmly in the Beatles corner. This album contains some competently played Blues and Rock'n'Roll with some Country and Folk thrown in. However, it's just not my thing. I enjoy the occasional Stones song, but none of these invites me to listen again (or to the end of the song, for that matter). 2/5

Did not grab me. There are a few good songs but most just fade into background noise.

Escaping from taxes, consuming drugs and copying some blues

It was alright

I'm sure this was groundbreaking at the time but now it just feels tired and pretty samey. I'm not a big fan of these "old-rockers" and that's how this sounds to me even though they probably recorded it very young!

12/16/2021 Today's Album: "Exile on Main Street" by The Rolling Stones - This might be a very unpopular opinion, but I think The Rolling Stones are incredibly overrated. I understand completely why they are important to the time they were popular in and they have one of the greatest influences over classic rock, but I really think they are emblematic of all of the clichés I really don't like about classic rock. Every song they make sounds like the most generic rock and as if it is applying to the lowest common denominator. There is legitimately great musicianship and performances in this album, but the composition of most of the songs just feels so stale unless if it's one of the songs that sounds like it is trying to be a hit. There are plenty of Rolling Stones songs that I like, but I feel like they are a band whose albums are very difficult to listen to as a wholistic experience. That being said, there are some moments on this record that really shine. Sweet Virginia strips things back with a very simple tune and sorta sounds like a Bob Dylan track. Turd On The Run oddly enough has an energy to it that almost no other track on this album seems to have and woke me up a little bit. Other than that it is really hard to latch onto these tracks. They are all lovely to listen to and the production isn't half bad, but they just sound very samey. It's a lot like the early stuff the Beatles were doing in the 1950s and early 60s. Score: 4/10 Just kinda boring to me Highlights: Sweet Virginia, Turd On the Run

Not my cup of tea

General notes: Blues inspired album, nothing too remarkable but competent. The bass does not have a full sound, very thing and lifeless. Lot's of second and third voices on top of Mick's. Good guitar work. Song by song **Rocks Off:** Starts the album OK with lots of honky tonk and horns. A fun, festive tone. Nothing too memorable at first listen though. **Rip this Joint:** Classic fast rock'n'roll. **Shake your hips:** Interesting ambience, reminds me of Chris Isaak. harmonica, the blues. **Casino Boogie:** It's a.... boogie. Nothing special. **Tumbling Dice:** One of the most recognizable Stones song for a reason. Great riffing, chorus, all the Stone ingredients are here. **Sweet Virginia:** Slow folksy blues, reminds me of León Gieco. Overall a solid song. **Torn And Frayed:** Mid tempo song, slide guitar, organ. Nothing too special, but the Black Crowes borrowed heavily from this vibe. **Sweet Black Angel:** Acoustic song, no drums. Kind of boring and generic. STOPPED LISTENING HERE.

Not bad, but very repetitive.

I don't like Rolling Stones

Uff 1.6

I am utterly puzzled by universal critical acclaim this album receives. It has its moments - I particularly liked the Country rock of Torned and Frayed -but it feels interminably dull for the most part. So much Stones by numbers, very proficient, but lacking in tunes. The Stones are far better than this.

That sure was a rolling stones album, I only just listened to it and I can't remember a single track, but it was fine while it was on.

Fine, nothing special.

It's fine. Good Stones album. 2/5.
