Had this one before. It's just derivative rock n roll
Wonder if ZZ Top wrote La Grange first or Rolling Stones wrote Shake Your Hips first?
Jackson Pollock: 1h 7mins, on god ceebs. Who be wailing on the sax. Actually kinda reminding me of Paul McCartney in the early 70s rn. Nothing has amazed me or moved me really, not too much my style. Can't point to any fav songs, but can't point to any I hate and I can sense the quality. Heading for a 3, which may be harsh.. "I just want to see his face" didn't need to be on this album. Shine a light is pretty good. Fav Songs: Shine a light Least Fav Songs: I just want to see his face Overall: It sounds solid, its not my style. The instrumentation sounds cute to me, rarely doesn't it sound intense or powerful. Hard to get a feel for lyrics as always for me. Sonically not that impressed. Songs are like a new love interest, the sound is like the physical characteristics. Both are important and you can't really be into the song/love interest without it, however, the lyrical content (or personality) are what turns something from good to great and can be what you sink your teeth into and keep you coming back. Metaphor baby. But anyway, solid 6.9/10
This is competent blues rock. It never went beyond that.
It took me until I was 35 too come around to the Stones. This would not have been the album to change my mind. Too same-y but I with no cohesive through line.
Solid. Great for its time and for the artist. Not my cup of tea.
Classic album. Not so much my style anymore but nothing wrong with classic Stones.
Loved the music, found it hard to understand the lyrics. Pretended it was Robert Johnson and just went with it. My first Rolling Stones album and was a little disappointed I can't lie, you hear so many Rolling Stones songs and I thought They were all pure gold but I guess not. Favourite track - Shake your hips.
Not my fave RS album, but the looser/bluesy focus is interesting. 3 stars
6/10. This had some pretty good songs, but listening to it straight through is not that pleasant—it's just too long and samey.
A generous 3
Honky thonk
Exile On Main Street is a title I recognize, but all of the music was new to me. The Rolling Stones are a capable Rock and Roll band. Even with their best songs, I never get that feeling that I "need" to listen to the Stones to satisfy some craving. Nothing sounded particularly appealing from this album. I listened. I'm done. I still feel like I've listened to enough Rolling Stones to last me for a good, long while.
Its good music. I get it. It just doesn't do anything for me. I couldn't find depth to their lyrics.
Good, but for me fairly standard rock n blues fare. I don't feel the need to listen to it again.
Very good listen love the Rolling Stones
A pleasant listen, but nothing really stands out on this album
tumblin' dice is great, but rest of this is just pretty average to me
I don’t know this one was alright but just didn’t really do it for me. It felt too timid and safe at times, not letting it all out when it needed to. “I Just Want To See His Face” felt especially inoffensive, being so demure and muffled that it felt like nothing. After more listens, I might like this album more, but right now I feel like it was mainly just okay. Favorites: Sweet Virginia, Shine A Light, All Down The Line
Dissapointing. Missing the sleeze from Beggers Banquet or Let it Bleed
Very swampy.
Favourite song: Soul Survivor
with the exception of a few songs most of this album just feels like another rolling stones album. It just feels pretty similar to some of their better albums like let it bleed. While I don’t hate it I think it’s pretty average. It doesn’t help that i was mixed on that style to begin with.
I’ve never been a huge RS fan. I enjoy most of their well know singles, but have never really listened to an album. I’d say I enjoyed most of the tracks this one, warts and all, and was struck by just how American they sounded - other than Jagger’s unmistakable voice of course. But I wouldn’t come racing back to hear them again.
It was fine. It’ll enrage the boomers but it was all very same same to me, minus one song with a killer sax. We need more sax in our lives.
I know I know. One of the greatest (some say the greatest) bands to ever make music. Doesn’t make me want listen. Giving a third star for their greatness.
71/100: I'm not gonna lie, I expected a lot more out of a Rolling Stones album. Maybe I should've braced myself for a mediocre album better when I noticed there were no tracks I recognized when first perusing the album. In the moment, though, I was hoping for an album full of Rolling Stones songs I'd never heard before but should have discovered far earlier. Unfortunately, this was certainly not the case. I found this album to be very disappointing and bland. In all honesty, it sounds more like a Rolling Stones tribute band trying to write their own songs than it does the actual Rolling Stones. There are many Rolling Stones songs and albums I'd rather listen to than this.
Det var ändå bra!
Enjoyed the more blues kind of vibe but most of the songs seemed kind of forgettable and most just blended into the background
Ive never been a stone's guy
Enough raw energy in her for a leonine extremist. No huge tracks, but ticks along nicely
ok
It’s been possibly years since I last heard this, and I always remembered this as perhaps the greatest Rolling Stones album; maybe in part due to the almost universal consensus that Exile is one of the greatest albums ever made. There’s no denying the fun and greatness of “Rocks Off”, “Let it Loose” and “Shine a Light”. And while few other songs are as bad and boring as “Shake Your Hips”, “Casino Boogie” and “I Just Want to See His Face”, the rest is not particularly great or interesting either. Most of them are just… Kinda there. I found this 2003 quote from Jagger concerning the record: “I'm not too sure how great the songs are, but put together it's a nice piece. However, when I listen to Exile it has some of the worst mixes I've ever heard.” It’s harsh, but he’s not completely wrong.
Makes me feel like that guy with balls in his mouth on the cover. Why are these British gentlemen singing about Virginias, owning slaves, doing the yeehaws and putting lipstick on the pig. I don't know what that last one means, I just searched "stupid American slang".
Unlike a lot of other reviews here, I actually hadn't seen this Rolling Stones album before (somehow), so this was a whole new experience for me. That being said, it wasn't that special of one. I never was a huge fan of the Rolling Stones, as it didn't do much for me, but this album was okay. That being said it was just okay. There wasn't anything that truly stuck out to me and while it started out strong in never really went anywhere. It's a very consistent album, so those who like the Stones will probably enjoy this album quite a bit, but all this is for me is another driving force as to why I will never understand the Beatles vs. Rolling Stones comparison
3.4/4 basic blues rock
One I've tried many times to 'get'. The Stones have some excellent tracks, their imagery and musicianship is great, Mick Jagger has a unique voice and there's lots of energy and vibes. This album though consists of pretty standard rock and roll numbers that just seem old hat compared all the exciting stuff going on before and around the same time like proto-punk, heavy metal, krautrock, prog rock and glam. I suppose if I was being kind I would say that it could have been a statement to go back to their roots, and I do like it a little bit more on each repeated listen. No hits as such but I could imagine some tracks would sound good in flashback scenes in a film. Ventilator Blues is my favourite. (3.5 but likely to grow)
Not a big Stones fan but enjoyed this album.
Good standard rock affair. Easily enjoyable.
very bluesy no real standout track 3.5
better than the other one, more fun and rock n rolllll
2.5 - I have no strong feelings one way or the other.
Was ok
liked some of the songs, but mid
Its pretty good but it feels like rich kids pretending to have the blues
I love the Stones, but this was a huge diappointment. Tumbling Dice is my all-time favourite track, but the majority of this album is just a shambles - lots of half finished ideas in desperate need of a sober producer and an editor. It just sounds like a bunch of stoned musicians jamming - no focus, some great riffs but a stack of dodgy lyrics, poorly thought out fills, mad bridges, terrible weedy production and overdubbed backing vocals trying to shore up the lack of direction. 3 or 4 finished tracks: tumbling dice, happy, rip this joint - maybe sweet virginia - the rest are unfinished filler. All down the line is the next closest to a fully formulated track - it's telling to see what they subsequently played in concert. With less drugs, a little more work and a whole lot of focus this would have made a really good single album, but a double? You've got to be kidding. Madly self-indulgent. Great riffs and ideas - ZZ Top turned Shake your hips into La Grange, Bob Seger turned Stop breaking down into Fire down below - why didn't the Stones do it first? Clearly too out of it to care.
Liked this a little bit more than I thought I would. I really enjoyed the instrumentals on this, the singing was fine but I didnt love it The saxophone that some songs had was often well done and I liked the guitar riffs. I feel like a lot of this sounded dated aswell 5/10 (p.s. i know the rolling stones is my grandma's favorite so im sorry grandma for giving them a low rating i promise i dont hate them)
It's the Rolling Stones, of course they are on this list. Surprisingly this album had no tracks, at least if I am recalling correctly, that I have heard before or are amongst their more popular ones.
I'm not a fan of The Rolling Stones, it's always been hard for me to understand why they are so liked. Anyway, this time I'm closer than ever, the album sounds fresh and catchy.
Ready good party music
Good album, not sure what the hype is about tho
I would listen to this again. But i didn't love it or love love it. The deluxe version was silly long. And the songs started to blend together.
I love the Rolling Stones but this isn't my fave album of theirs
Over the years I've softened my stance on the Rolling Stones. I used to hate them with a passion, now I don't mind them too much. Some of their songs I actually would say I like. This album is interesting, very blues inspired. But most of the songs sound kind of like throwaways to me. Tumbling Dice, Happy, and All Down The Line are probably my favorites here. 3 stars.
Gaaf album hor.
It was fine - I got a little bored of it after a while. The Rolling Stones have never been a band I actively seek to listen to, though. I did appreciate the blues and jazz influences in the music.
Good but not for me
So much the Rolling Stones! Ok this is a fun album, best Rolling Stones stuff yet. Though they are overrated, I just listened to a Talking Heads album, and that is what overrated sounds like. 4 The best of the Rolling Stones I've heard this far. 3 Half of it is at least
Very earnest album. But The Rolling Stones has so much hype around their name that I guess I expected more?
100% puro Rolling Stones.
Erg cookie cutter album van the stones, niet erg bijzonder
I can see why people like this. Would make for good road trip music. Ventilator Blues and Shine a Light were standouts for me
I wasn't blown away, The Stones kind of start to blend for me at a certain point.
I don't know... this is controversial but I did not love this album. Nothing stood out to me and it's just very long. This is nice background music for me but it completely fades into the background even when listening cycling (I've given it three tries now) and cycling is my best music listening time so... Can't say I love it but it's okay.
Exile obviously has more space to grow on me than the other mediocre Stones albums: My baseline respect for it is based largely on the chops and variety on display. The latter prevents the album from feeling like a slog, but the high points fail to move me, and there's too much pastiche (my only explicit objection, leaving Jagger's vocals and lyrics to future appraisal).
I can't say this one grabbed me as much as the other Stones albums on this list. Probably one for the die hard fans or those who’ve seen them live a few times. Faves? I dunno it just kind of feels like one long song.
Early Stones. Seems almost 'simple' in comparison to later stuff... A few less layers. Liked it...kind of clean
Not their best album.
I didn't know a Stones album could be this boring. Seemed more like imitations of late 50s and early 60s rock, and not the bold attempts at pushing the genre of blues rock that makes up the Stones' best stuff.
I don’t really know where any one song started and another began. This album blended so well without droning. Nothing stood out—bad or great. All of it was good. I didn’t get to full-concentration listen but I did get to enjoy. I enjoyed this as a rock-and-kick-ass-at-work album.
Nah I don't think it's for me.
Psst. Hey you. Yeah you. C’mere. No, closer. There we go, just a little closer… Nope, even closer… I don’t get what the big deal is with The Rolling Stones beyond their longevity. They’re fine.
Yeah, this grooves along and flows really well, especially for a 50-year-old double album
The Stones are weird because they've been around for about 300 years but I don't feel I know them at all. I don't think this particular album best represents what I think is their general appeal but it is very good, full of soul and feel.
Was expecting to enjoy this more than I did. Scrapes a 3/5 really. It's too long, and a bit too bland, not an unpleasant sound but not particularly striking. Very bluesy and not as energetic as I'd hoped for.
Yeah it was pretty good I guess. Most of the tracks are repetitive but there's a few that really stand out, even though I'm normally not a huge fan of the Stones.
Why is it always jam today?
main street, mainstream, amirite?
Good stuff. Not right in my wheelhouse but very listenable.
Rock moment
I had a difficult time rating this one. Honestly, this was a solid offering and I was aware that the music was "good" enough, but I simply couldn't enjoy it for some reason.
I don’t think I’d previously heard any of these, even though I knew the album title. Nothing here to sway me to being a stones fan.
Probably my least favorite of the Stones albums during their “boom period” with Sticky Fingers, Beggar’s Banquet and Let it Bleed. That’s not to say it isn’t a good album, it’s just kind of a big let down (in my eyes) from the previous albums which were insanely good. This is a good one to toss on some headphones and get lost in English Blues/Rock for a little
the first half of the album was much better for me, probably the fact that album is so long doesn't help as well. I enjoyed it anyways, there is some cool songs, great rocking, but that was either too much or too little
Much better than Aftermath or Let It Bleed, but 3 is about my ceiling for the rolling stones. 2.5 if I could
An embodiment of 70s rock.
A decent Stones album, but few of the familiar tunes. More of a deep cuts album.
A definitive Rolling Stones album. Went for the remaster rather than the delux version, which was far too long imo. Remaster sounds tight, and captures the era.
I never had listening this album before. It's fun! I'll add on my playlists.
It's Rolling Stones. I liked Loving Cup and Ventilation Blues. There was nothing I particularly disliked.
It was good but not very memorable. One recognized song
I mean… it’s a classic Stones album with their signature sound.
Bunch of old men, slappin some strings
3 from me
2 hours of very samey stuff
More country than I thought it would be. Just a bit meh
So... disappointing.
Helst til bensínlaust
I want the rolling stones dead and so does kev apparently
I know it's a critically acclaimed album, but it doesn't really work for me.
the rolling stones are considered some of the best in history but that wasn’t made evident in this album, sorry not sorry. jk sorry. but it just wasn’t anything shocking or even necessarily good? obviously it wasn’t awful and i didn’t hate it but i just didn’t vibe with it
Well, it's sure miles better than the execrable Exile in Guyville... (i'm still reeling from that one, weeks later). This is making me give Exile a deep dive for the first time in years and ... it's still just ok? That's it for me - it's only ever ok at best. I recognize that this comes in many peoples' top 10 albums of all time ... I mean, damning with faint praise here in that there's nothing in its (VERY) long running time that made me want to skip but on the other hand it's also like an hour+ of blues riffs often with 3 or 2 chords...or 1... and just meandering. Like someone would start a simple riff, they'd all jam on it, and forget that they were supposed to write a song. Print it - next. Also it really does sound like they recorded a lot of it in a living room - which I think they did. Which I suppose none of these are really hard critiques - I could see really liking (loving?) this if you're a fan of "vibey" albums and this is definitely one - is that what the attraction has been for it over the years? That they were on the run/lam in France, super smacked out, and "let's just let the tapes roll" ....? It's a fun story maybe but for me if you're defending an album's greatness based on the background of it coming together over the actual content it's not much of a defence. I don't want to continually rip this (joint?) album by pointing out things I don't like (I probably started with the negatives because so much has been written about it over the years) as there are definitely positives here - for example, when "Tumbling Dice" finally comes on 5 songs in it's fantastic, but maybe more of a relief - it feels like this should be the launching point for more of what was the best of the Stones. Turns out that it's not, but it is still nice to hear a good song. Other standouts for me are "Loving Cup" (which is probably my favourite song on the album) and "Happy" is a fine single. Also I suspect a lot of this comes down to whether you gravitate more towards blues in rock as opposed to more classical/jazz influence, which I generally do not. Sure, I like a lot of Stones songs - e.g. Gimme Shelter is definitely one of my fave popular/classic rock songs ever (less influence from a blues scale on that one, hmm.) - but I think they're generally not my thing. Summary: this album is bloated and often suffers from a lack of cohesive songwriting/songs. Cut this down to ~7 songs (are there 7 actual/good songs here?) and we might have had the start of something at least. 5/10 3 stars
Gave it two listens and it didn't really grab me - there are definitely Rolling Stones albums I like more. To their credit(?), they decided that if they were gonna appropriate black American music, by golly they weren't gonna half arse it - the number of genres they're ripping off an incorporating is impressive. Fave track - "Happy", maybe, or the execrably named "Turd on the Run"
Nice, but too much of the same
It felt a bit chaotic, there were too many ideas being jammed into this album. The Stones are always enjoyable though. Solid pick for a Saturday.
Stevie Ray Vaughn slash Grateful Dead? Interesting
Very good! Not the best ive heard from them, though.
Really fun listen but some of the songs overstay their welcome.
Classic rock. You know what you're getting. Nothing out of the ordinary. Neutral experience either way.
2010 remaster
I have a confession. I don't think I am that much of a Stones fan.
I think this album has been built up in my head and I was expecting more from it. A couple songs that knock me out, but by in large I didn't find the album that enjoyable.
Double album of Rolling Stones. I like two songs: "Tumbling Dice" and "Happy".
It’s got it going on, but it’s definitely not my favorite Stone’s album.
Not my favourite Stones album (that would be Let It Bleed) but still bloody good. Iconic cover too.
This album was fine. I have a general indifference to the Rolling Stones and this record did nothing to move the needle in either direction. Like several of the albums we have listened to from decades past, there is a feel that it was ground breaking at the time, but the edge diminished with time. Machismo and drugs are standard fare and a bit played out today. The various musical styles do keep it interesting, though. What I liked most about this album is hearing what later artists took liberally from. I hear horns The Hold Steady used and a lot of Adam Green's sound is basically these tracks with a bit more pop sensibility. Hands down the most rewarding aspect of this listen was comparing it to the track for track response album that Liz Phair put out, Exile in Guyville. Hopefully that album, with much more soul and something to say, will pop up on this list.
I couldn't say why but I've never been very fond of the Stones albums, maybe because my parents had only compilations or maybe because I wanted to be a Sgt. Pepper over there somewhere lol... I don't think I've ever listened to this one in full before, and not all the songs I'm familiar with. I can recognize the effort and quality but I got tired after a while. This is the first Stones album I've got from the list so lets hope it only gets better
I can honestly say I've never actively listened to the rolling stones before. A couple of songs in I'd made my mind up that it just wasn't grabbing me but it did throw delicious surprises out. Lighter and more fun than I'd expected. It made for nice listening if a little samey on a first listen. The vocal tracks didn't grab me enough to make a lasting impression but I enjoyed it well enough.
Good songs, really shows the blues band they were. Still not totally amazing
Interesting mix of genres. Very laidback...very classic rock n roll.
Some good songs, but all sound very much the same in the end. Nothing I'd listen to again or save to any playlists.
This was certainly a Rolling Stones album. Incredible to think all the members are 112 years old and still touring
Good music. Very 70s/80s. Most of the music sounds the same but good album overall
was really looking forward to this but its...a bit hot n miss. doesn't get good till tumblin dice and is patchy. 3
Raucous honky tonk rock n roll. But a double album was a bit too much for me. The songs seemed to run together with a very similar sound. Shake your hips and Sweet Virginia were the exceptions and the ones I liked best. I’ve always thought that I respect the Stones but I just don’t love them and this still holds true.
Eh, it was alright. We feel like we've heard this kind of bluesy rock a lot, and maybe we're too young to really get what makes this album interesting.
Still don't get the hype. So much of this album felt like dull rock 'n' roll that I've already forgotten and am unlikely to go back to. It's well executed, and there's some better moments on it - I really liked Let it Loose and Shine a Light - but for the best part, I just don't care
cool but not my style
Raw, fun. Good driving album
Haven’t ever listened to a full Rolling Stones and was surprised at the different styles of music on it.
Good album, not sure I get the uber hype for it though.
Somewhat weak
A fine Stones album. But that's all it is. Nothing groundbreaking.
Tail end of the album was the most enjoyable. Fun album but no replay value for me.
not horrible but not great
Good ol' rock. Liked Turd On The Run in particular. Didn't find it extraordinary, decent music nonetheless.
Kult album.
Let It Loose, Shine a Light, Following the River.
Solid Stones album. Not a lot of recognizable tracks for a non-fan, but I really liked this one. I expected not to. It is pretty darn long - didn't plan for that and it kinda turned into background music at some point.
Cool Blues and rock, but ramshackle and rough. I realise this is controversial, but I was disappointed after Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers.
Good group to listen to
The definition of bluesy rock, descent album just not to my taste 3/5
The grandfathers of nearly all rock music that anyone’s listened to since. Almost all musical styles are credited back to the band or artist who were the first to refine them. The Rolling Stones have certainly refined blues rock n roll on this album. Mick Jaggers voice is filled with as much swagger as ever and matches perfectly to the the electric bends & slides performed by Keith & Ronnie throughout these tracks. This album can be played in almost any setting and be guaranteed not to conjure up one single complaint....take my word for it. 3 Stars!
Very bluesy, but also a little too long. Liked a couple of songs, but nothing like Gimme Shelter. 3 feels fair Saved: Tumbling Dice, Sweet Virginia
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Sweet Virginia, Sweet Black Angel, Let It Loose, Soul Survivor Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: They do a lot of messing around on this, some of it works for me and some of it just feels unnecessary to have put on the record (deluxe versions were made for this kind of album). I bet the performances for this album KILLED live. Had this been trimmed by about 15 minutes it would've been close to a 4. It seems like this is a favorite of Rolling Stones fans so I'll hide behind my usual "blues/country isn't usually my genre" excuse when I give this a low 3.
Understand why it's on the list. Didn't bother me to listen to but it didn't grab my attention even though it had more than an hour to do so. (Maybe one or two songs got some attention.) Would not listen to again.
It was fine, not much else to say. Wouldn't search it out to listen again.
Some really great tunes, would make a better single album.
Better on second listen, but didn't keep me interested through middle of the album
Kept skipping to next song some.good some ok
"Wham, Bham, Birmingham" (Rip this joint) Escuchando este disco y pensando alternativamente en los "NO" y "Yes" y "NO FUNNY" de John Mulaney imitando a Mick Jagger.
So effing long
This project is showing to me that I like Rolling Stones much more than I tough before these first 120 albums listened from the list. However, this is the third Rolling Stones selected in my list and I think that is the worst (the other two were awesome and this one is just good). I liked much more of this album because of the Wikipedia link. The history of this album and its production gave me another perspective of it, even wich the songs nothing touching me in any way. It worth it, but this is not the Rolling Stones album that I'll listen to in the near future.
Not really into Stones but this was alright
Too much identical rhythm'n'blues-y rock tracks, still a good vibe
Quite easy to listen to. Music is great, not the biggest fan of Jagger's voice. I enjoy the country vibes.
Prefer the Stones, it turns out. This seems like a fun jukebox album and would've been cool to see live.
Decent LP but no standout tracks really
I haven't listened to Rolling Stones much before. I always they were more hard rock. Approaching metal. But to me they sound closer to country. I thought that was fun.
Pretty standard rock - nothing groundbreaking
Better than expected. Bit in your face sounding record and songs simplistic in concept and meaning.
3.5 good album, easy listening, stereotypical classic rock sound. Was listening to while doing some kitchen chores nothing grab my attention
Nastaa rockia jota on helppo kunnella.
1972. Key Songs: Rocks Off, Shake Your Hips
I've never cared about the rolling stones. I don't know why so many "rock guys" think they're the beginning of music as we know it. Like Keith Richards is the first guitarist that mattered. I don't care how immortal he supposedly is. It just sounds like bluesy rock. I guess they get a pass for being less annoying than the Beatles. A couple of the songs have cool solos, too. 3/5.
I can't help compare the Stones to the Beatles and the Stones always come up wanting. This is OK for a blues cover band but I think the Stones are a singles and filler mob.
Nothing exciting
There are a few good songs here but this was painfully long.
The music on this album is relatively enjoyable, if a bot too samey. My problem is that I dont really like Mick’s vocals. For odd songs it’s fine, but sustained over the full one hour plus its just horrific. His vocals also feel a bit too low in the mix for a lit of the album, which actually makes them worse. I generally like a good bit of sax in songs but not so when they pipe up a lot of the time here (‘Happy’ being an exception). Overall it’s probably a 2.5 but it’s not strong enough for a 3
As previously established on this Generator, I think The Rolling Stones are overrated. I don’t get them at all. This album, at least, has one of the two Stones songs I actually like (“Tumbling Dice”), but this was not otherwise for me.
I just don't really get The Rolling Stones. I am still not a big fan of Jagger's voice, I hate that so many things just seem to end in a long jam session, and the whole thing just seems to last forever. The brass I like because I like the sound of brass instruments, but I just don't find this particularly interesting as an album. I think I gave the previous Stones album the generator provided a 3, and while I don't think this is that much better or worse, averaging the two out to a 2.5 seems appropriate, so: 2/5
Put this off after half an hour. It’s been 6 stones albums (so far) I get it, it’s just not very interesting.
That's it. It's official. I don't like the Rolling Stones... in my opinion the most overrated band in history and the fact that they are often spoken in the same breath as the Beatles is an insult to the Beatles. They can't touch the Beatles in terms of songwriting, performance, and especially innovation and production.
meh meh 2,4
jak na stonesów to mehhhh
it's ok
1.5 stars I’ve always said that the Stones are not an album band. They love filler too much. But I was prepared to be wrong about this. After all, it was #7 best album of all time on the 2003 Rolling Stone list. So it’s got to at least be good, if not great, right? I first tried to listen to this album when I made a playlist of the best double albums of all time according to some google research. I was driving for Uber and wanted to use my time to listen to albums I never had gotten around to listening to, as well as kill time. Through that playlist I discovered The River and Sign O’ the Times. I also remember putting this on the playlist. I remember not knowing anything about the album, being surprised by the fact that I knew no songs from it and that it had been rated so highly. When I listened to it, I didn’t get it. I never tried again until earlier today. I complained about Sticky Fingers having filler track with faux Southern accents and cheesy country rock. But at least it had enough classic tracks to make up for that and make a passable album. This album is if someone listened to Sticky Fingers and thought: “hey, why not take out all of the good music and just make 18 songs of mediocre country blues rock.” And that’s what it is. The best thing about this album is that it is only barely a double album. At 66 minutes it is not a double album by CD era standards, but technically was more than could fit on a single LP. If they had shaved off 3 tracks (really most would do) they’d have a single album that wouldn’t feel any different. I don’t get it and won’t listen to it again. It wasn’t miserable, but it pissed me off how forgettable it was given the reputation. This isn’t one of the best albums of all time. It’s not even in my top 5 best Stones albums and I think I’ve only listened to 6 of their albums.
Any Rolling Stones record starts from a point of disadvantage because I absolutely cannot stand Mick Jagger’s voice, and I hate that I can see his stupid gurning face flapping around in my mind whenever I hear it. This is one of the few Stones records I had heard all the way through before because people bang on about it a lot - it didn’t sound any better this time. Overly long, repetitive gurning and straining, and yeah I guess if you like 'rock & roll' music this is a great example of that (?), but I really, really don’t.
Is this really supposed to be one of the greatest rock albums of all time? Maybe 3 songs stuck out of thewhole thing to me, and the rest might as well have been the same blues jam (nearly in the same key) for 45 minutes. "Tumbling Dice", Ventilator Blues" and "Let It Loose" were the only ones that left any sort of impression on me and even then it wasn't that good, it was just a changeup from the two chord (somehow) blues rock of the rest of it. The solos aren't even interesting. Maaaayybe some of the saxophone and trumpet hits save it from total mediocrity? I don't know. I seriously do not get what is supposed to be special about this.
Expertly produced pub blues. But I can't take a double album of Jagger.
well no my type
Just not for me i guess..
This is so fucking boring. I feel like I'm missing something because this is such a highly regarded album but I didn't get a whole lot out of most of the songs on here. There's some exceptions of course, I loved Tumbling Dice and Rocks Off and 1 or 2 others too, but everything else just kinda went in one ear and out the other.
didn’t have half the mind to listen to it. im constantly worrying about my finals, constantly studying - and this album just couldn’t put me in the mental flow wich i require in this period. felt like a jolly cowboy in a tarantino movie, at another time in my life it might be nice to revisite this. im also not a huge rolling stones fan, even if i liked sticky fingers this was just too much mick jagger in two weeks.
Classic rock album. Too boring for me respectfully
Couple okay songs.. not my fav
No me gusto mucho
God I hate the stones.
i don't think it rocks hard enough for an hour. some songs are alright.
The Rolling Stones have had many excellent songs over the decades but their albums always seem to have only one or two of these tracks on them. The rest is just filler. And not very good filler at that. Compared to the Beatles, there albums seem to be loaded with killer songs, is why the Stones alway seem to pale by comparison.
MID
The pinnacle of boring Boomer blues rock.
Never really been a Stones Fan. Lots of Blues & Honky Tonk, a long listen, fun at times, but hard to get through.
No, just not for me. I understand why they have 'legendary' status amongst some but the music does nothing for me. 'Turd on the Run' is about right
tvåa pga dåligt humör
Meh. Never been a Rolling Stones fan, and this album didn't change my mind. They're good at what they do, sure. It's a solid blues-rock record, but I don't connect with it on any level, and I had a hard time listening all the way through. Probably won't remember any of it tomorrow. It's also certainly not their best album. It's unnecessarily long, with not enough hits and too many filler songs that should have been cut out. It feels like at this point, the Stones were just rollercoasting on a well-established formula without putting much heart into their work. On another note, Mick Jagger describing the Stones as "runaway outlaws using the blues as a weapon against the world" during this album - while they were actually hiding in a luxurious French villa to avoid paying taxes - has to be peak hypocrisy. No wonder the punk movement would later express disgust at this kind of rock star posturing. Won't listen again. Ideally I'd rate this a 2,5*, but since I can't, it's a 2*. 4/10
ehh
I don't get how this is one of the most loved albums. Felt dull and boring and didn't do anything to me. Didn't even make it the full way through
I guess I’m okay with the fact that I really just don’t like The Rolling Stones
Just an hour of white 70s rock. Bro. Why are we doing this. I kinda dont care. It's insignificant to me. Its nothing. Just fuckin yelling all over the place. I don't care. I don't wanna hear this it's not anything new it's just more white fucking 70s rock can the critics making this list jump off that dick please. Favourite: Least favourite: Rip This Joint/All of it
it's okay, personally not my cup of tea
Aburridooo me voy
Still don‘t get them.
crap
Boring, not my type of music at all, I can see myself bopping my head to it if it was in the background of a feel good movie about a man, a dog, and his ford pickup.
Yep
Meh. It was fine. Ran a little too long, really stagnated for me.
I genuinely don't see the appeal of this- It's like fine.
Lots of varied instruments and fun, fast-paced blues stuff but drags on without much change from song to song. Highlights: "Rocks Off", "Sweet Virginia", "Let It Loose"
way too long. So many songs just blend into one another. Not the worst, but overrated to me.
Solid, if a little long for me.
This album is the same song for an hour and 15 minutes, I could not wait for it to be over. It is escaping a 1 because I was not giving it my full attention and will give it the benefit of the doubt. I will never relisten to determine if I was right or not.
The Stones really don't do anything for me.
This album is way too long and half the songs sound the same. The music is otherwise fine, but nothing stands out as great to me. Cut five tracks at random from this and its probably a 3.
Didn’t even realise it was over
I’m sure it is good, I’m just not a fan
holy shot does every rolling stones song sound exactly the same?
more country than i expected the stones. have to give em a lil bit for being pioneers i spose....
I didn't hate it, so I gave it 2 stars. Although, I would rather not listen to it again. It sounded like one long song. There was discernable high point.
no es mi gusto musical, no soy fan del rock and roll.
this is simply not my genre 😂
This is way too long and too sloppy.
not my style of music
#309/1001. Well that was a lot of honkkitonkki and rokkenrolli, as expected. Some unexpected ones lift this to a 2.
I'm starting to really understand what Lemy was talking about when it came to the difference between The Beatles and The Stones... The Stones have a few good songs and I'm pretty sure those were all written by Brian Jones, the rest is meh at best.
Ikke rigtigt nogen numre, der stak ud.
Underwhelmed
Best Song: Tumbling Dice. Following the classic Rolling Stones formula of having the best vocals on the album be soulful female vocals that appear nowhere else on the album. Worst Song: I Just Want To See his Face. Why does it sounds like this song was played underwater? Overall: I just find the Stones deeply uninteresting. It doesn't feel like good rock, it certainly isn't great blues, and Mick Jaggers sings with this kind of wailing looseness that I find irritating.
- Oh, these pedos (and probably Zios) again. - Muddy production and boring... no real hooks to speak of, except on Tumbling Dice and Happy, and Shine A Light is kind of nice. - I guess it's good that I can't make out the lyrics because the last album I got of theirs was totally misogynistic. I also don't think that Mick's voice fits this style of bluesy music - it's just too whiny and nasal. - The only instrumentation that stands out is some nice piano playing and a couple other licks here and there. - Would never reach for this - it's cluttered without anything that impressive to focus on, so it's not good background music or something I want to pay attention to. - There is no reason for this to be a double album. It's so long, and I just kept wanting it to end. It just feels totally self-indulgent, which doesn't help my impression that Mick is a total narcissist.
REPETITIVE OH MY WORD.
Just a bit generic and bland. I appreciate this may have been more influential and out there in the 70s but listening today it's just a bit boring 2
One thing this list has proven is that I seem to have never missed anything by not giving The Rolling Stones a listen. Their third album I’ve had to listen to so far and this still does absolutely nothing for me.
hm
Not my favorite, most songs sound the same.
I agree with what one reviewer said, and that was that it was easy for this album to quickly become background noise. I don’t know if it’s the vocals— pushed back and just out of reach where the hard to understand singing style of Jim Morrison— or something else. The Bluey influences are definitely heard throughout and there are some killer harmonica sections. This album just didn’t do it for me though. It’s a fine album and I know there are some diehard fans of this album, and I’m sure I can be one of them, but I don’t wanna really take the time to fall in love with this album if that’s even possible. I’ve also read that this is their most revered album. If that is the case, I don’t think I need to hear anymore of the Rolling Stones because I didn’t really take this happen that much. It’s fine…
Im just not a fan of the rolling stones......never have been. This album bored me. The Beatles, The Who, The Doors even the Kink - all much better. Cream better than all of them.
221/1089 kinda disappointed i can’t lie. it’s not “bad” by any means but it was a bit more dull than i was expecting. It was decent background music while i was reading though, so i didn’t feel the length as much as i expected. i can appreciate the chill mellow vibes and it had a couple of moments that stood out to me but it didn’t hook me and it was a bit too samey faves: Let It Loose, Shine A Light, Loving Cup 48/100
I understand this is a good album. Personally, though I wanted it to be over halfway through. Each song sounds kind of the same.
I found this kinda boring. None of the songs were that memorable, the album is too long and all the songs blur into an underwhelming slop of generic rock and roll. To be fair I don't really know the context of when they made this. They must've earned their reputation somehow and I'm sure they were very influential at the time. I wasn't there though so I don't care. It was fine to have on in the background but I'm not going to relisten, on purpose anyway. Bit dead.
ehhhhh
mudpie - “ That was quite a double turd that Jagger and co. collectively shat out. I don’t understand why a single song on that record even exists. Can you imagine that there are people to whom that album is very dear? Really, each song was more pointless, boring, and sloppy than the one before it.” Couldn’t have said it better myself.
2.2/5 Some good songs but nothing too amazing
Overall: 4.7/10 Personally, not for me. The instruments were the main thing keeping my ears focused. I can see why people would like it, but I can’t get jiggy with this.
not for me
In which the Rolling Stones bulk ordered records from america in order to produce a perfectly alright collection of songs for around an hour
Really disappointing. When the stones get it right they have some incredible songs, and I knew this album by reputation, but not a single standout track on the whole thing. Some pleasant vibes and the odd passable riff, but mostly just felt incredibly generic and heavily ripping off better artists. For every passable song - Happy, or Sweet Virginia - there's a track like All Down The Line which is just appalling. Scrapes a 2 even after a second listen. However impressive it may have been at the time, it just doesn't hold up.
A couple nice songs, but this was twice the length it should have been. I don’t get the love for this album. Would not play again.
This album dragged on the 5th track. Completely forgettable album too. Country rock just not my thing haha
For me, much of the Stones discography is background rock n roll, formulaic, meh. I think they are also awesome and very entertaining but this album is not. 2.4
Vau rok i rol mid
OK, it's the Stones. Was never a huge fan, and this really doesn't convince me either. I used to think it was because I was born too late to appreciate them, but there are other bands from "before my time" that I adore, so that's not it. I just think they are overrated. They aren't horrible, but do they deserve all the crazy amount of glory they have gotten? And this wasn't horrible either, but did it have to be a double album, with bad recording?
I like the rolling stones quite a bit and while I know this is considered one of their best it was just kind of meh for me. No shame just meh.
Liked it
Yall mind if a white boy gets a little.. *bluesy* with it? Cause I do. It’s not very exciting.
Obvs a classic. Pretty dang... rock-and-roll-blues-band-y. Personally, I have never been able to dig the sound of this record. Maybe it just ain't my thing? Is it the mix? The instrumentation? The wandering vocal "melodies"? Nothing futuristic about it? I'm stumped. To me it sounds like the taste of an over-cooked beef stew. Sure, it's tangy and beefy but the beef is dry and there's a slight acidity from too many tomatoes which isn't balanced by any sweetness or fat. On re-listens I find I'm not singing along to anything. Re-listens are actually making me like it less. It's too long. Yes, I know about the history and about the exile. This would have been a hell of an undertaking. It's just...not for me.
To my shame, I know very little about The Rolling Stones. This strikes me as a great album to have on at a house party - it's a hazy bluesy album. One track blends into the next well enough and they're not bad songs but none make me want to really *listen*.
The start of the parody band the Stones would become.
Not my cup of tea.
Uck. I'm still not surprised to get this, since 3 Rolling Stoneses seems about right given how much they're talked about in Society, but we juuuust had one of theirs. And it's ANOTHER double album!!! I dunno, it's not that bad, maybe a 2.5, but it has no real redeeming features. So, to me, they're frustratingly overrated! Also, slur count = 1.
Just really not for me AOTY rating: 64
An album bloated with stinkers.
Couple of ok songs but it’s boomer shit and it’s too long
Streit, litt for langt
not bad but not really my style
It’s not the albums fault, I was very stressed out and in a bad mood yesterday so I wasn’t in the mood to listen to this but I did anyway
Rocks Off is a really fun opener- big fan of the trumpets. Despite not being the last track, Shine a Light was an impressive closer. Overall, there were moments of greatness but I wasn’t a huge fan.
4.25/10
2/5
Rambling and sloppy doesn't do it justice. Parts of this were hard to listen to. I understand why this is here and it's impact on music. I like some of their hits but nothing on this album makes me want to party or dance. Seems like the schlitz of rock n roll. Like I didn't drink schlitz riding around in a pickup truck, but I'm sure my dad did and I'd bet this album was in the tape deck.
It was... Okay. It felt a little repetitive and boring but wasn't bad by any means.
I have no children and I'm under 40, what's the point of listening to this? There's no need to emulate my dad (or any other dad, for that matter) pretending to enjoy this. The other albums of the Stones featured in this list (or the Rollings as we say in Spain), at least have some hit singles. But this one, albeit being the most reputed one, is a collection of background music with no particular interest. This has been confusing for me. I have always heard this album as a cornerstone of the Stones discography but it was just a random collection of blues/rock songs. Meh.
Hmm I gave up about halfway through. I love aspects of the stones, but not these bits. Just felt like a bunch of lads with no material trying to adopt a new York sound. The piano sounds fun and the backing vocals are strong. Saxophone does not qualify as a real instrument (for me). Mick's voice sounds weak, guitars a bit thrown together. Drums... I'm too scared to criticise Charlie. Anyway I'm not sure there's even a single album of good material here, let alone two.
Pretty dull really. A couple of ok songs but nothing stands out. I think I’d rather just listen to an actual blues album.
Not a huge stone person sorry
Bluesy, has some gospel notes, has some country, mainly just old school rock and roll. Really not my thing, but I've heard much worse.
