Ok now this is what I'm talking about. Dirty, swaggering, rock n roll. Telecasters and bowl cuts and STD's. I've heard this one when I briefly tried to get into the Stones in my early 20's. I dunno why I never revisited this one because I distinctly remember liking this album the most out of all of them. First track kicks you in the fucking nuts; it might not be as loud or as crushing as modern rock music production wise but somehow the raw attitude sells it and it feels so much heavier than your run of the mill "rock" band these days. Suck my dick Royal Blood, Danko Jones, or whatever. This was when it was still dangerous and it was ok to be a self absorbed white guy with a guitar. I already love the song Rocks Off, let's hope that I don't suddenly remember why I stopped listening to the Stones in my initial attempt. Ok. I remember why I stopped listening to the Stones. Look, I love Bo Diddly's rhythmic guitar lines (to be fair the palatable context was provided by the first track off of VU so not that I'm trying to allocate any cool points here), I don't mind older rock n roll, but I just cannot fucking STAND the Chuck Berry dunga dunga dunga dunga guitar riffs. Fuck that shit. It's so fucking corny. But honestly it's not that bad here. I'm just not a blues guy, thanks to my dad who used to torture me with some of the worst examples of the genre (eat a dick Bonamossa, you're the blues version of pretentious metal guitarists that are more interested in speed and technicality than musicality), but maybe without that my guard would be down and I'd just stop being a hipster fuck and just appreciate it. Anyhow, it's all the more apparent how lost that glossy, but "clean" (by today's standards at least) tube amp sound isn't really prevalent in any kind of rock music that isn't indie or is trying to lean more on the masculine side of rock music. Perhaps I'm wrong because I've likely heard it in the afore mentioned shitty blues music my dad used to blast, but its swagger was probably completely ruined by the pristine production compared to this, which is a little grungier and rough around the edges, which is exactly how I like my standard guitar, drum, bass, vox album to sound like. Sounds organic and dirty and that shit hits my g spot. I'm more open to the classic country and blues guitar tropes these days, and now I get why I hated it so much in my early 20's despite being fond of guitarists that loved this era of the Stones, but yeah it's not rocking my world. Wouldn't call it average, it's just not singing to me. Except that first track, my God that shit gives me goose bumps. Intense attitude and swagger on that one. It's fairly difficult not to listen to this and hear it as a boring cliche'd classic rock album, but that's likely due to its age and my own ignorance on the subject. It's just hard to see it as a seriously creative thing, and it's not like I even believe that myself. Some of the tracks on here feel like they're meandering into obvious turns that I've heard a million times. Blame my generation's dopamine fatigued brain I guess. It's not horrible at all or even bad or even mediocre, it's just not for me. The piano riff of Loving Cup kinda rips. I gotta admit for how many songs are on this thing it doesn't feel for a moment that anything here was really uninspired, despite my previous remarks of how cliche'd it can sound at the same time. Ok, I'm nearing the end of the album and it kinda rips a lot harder than how I felt about it my first time hearing it. That's just how I am, either albums rip right out the gate or it takes me several tries before I can come up with an opinion.

I thoroughly enjoyed this album. Usually I like more contemporary rock albums, but it genuinely surprised me on how it created a cohesive sound throughout the entirety of the album. Instrumentals were good, they were par with other rock albums.

What always blows me away about this album is how American it sounds. Sure, the Stones had long been riffing off the blues but a song like Rip this Joint expands that into some New Orleans sounds and Sweet Virginia sounds like it was recorded in Nashville. Just an amazing sublimation of influences while transmogrifying them into something not new but altogether transporting.

Dakle, mislim da je do ovog albuma što sam slušao Stonese. Jednostavno mi se svidjela ta blues rock priča i na tome sam ostao. 4 albuma kojima se najviše vraćam su Let it Bleed, Baggers Banquet, Sticky Fingers i ovaj (ali najmanje od ovih). Dakle 4 jako jako dobra albuma u rasponu od samo 5 godina. Definitivno su po meni tu bili na vrhu. Kod ovog albuma mi se sviđa jer je više raskošniji od ostalih što sam naveo, podugačak je što je možda i mana tu, ali svakako album ostaje zanimljiv sa odličnim pjesmama kao što su: Tumbling Rice, Sweet Virginia, Soul Survivor itd.

Сперва кажется вот этим дженерик ролинстоунсовским блюз-рок-н-ролом, но всё же не так всё плохо. Ухо цепляет треки порой, Let It Loose, Shine a Light, Following the River. Да дженерик масса сама по себе не душная. Не хотелось дождаться окончания альбома и скипнуть, пару раз честно прогналось. Так что 5/10 наберётся.

Solid Stones album. Not a lot of recognizable tracks for a non-fan, but I really liked this one. I expected not to. It is pretty darn long - didn't plan for that and it kinda turned into background music at some point.

Cool Blues and rock, but ramshackle and rough. I realise this is controversial, but I was disappointed after Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers.

Such a good blues rock album. Love an upbeat first track. So many good good songs in the record. The guitar work is so subtle but really adds so much to each song.

The grandfathers of nearly all rock music that anyone’s listened to since. Almost all musical styles are credited back to the band or artist who were the first to refine them. The Rolling Stones have certainly refined blues rock n roll on this album. Mick Jaggers voice is filled with as much swagger as ever and matches perfectly to the the electric bends & slides performed by Keith & Ronnie throughout these tracks. This album can be played in almost any setting and be guaranteed not to conjure up one single complaint....take my word for it. 3 Stars!

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Sweet Virginia, Sweet Black Angel, Let It Loose, Soul Survivor Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: They do a lot of messing around on this, some of it works for me and some of it just feels unnecessary to have put on the record (deluxe versions were made for this kind of album). I bet the performances for this album KILLED live. Had this been trimmed by about 15 minutes it would've been close to a 4. It seems like this is a favorite of Rolling Stones fans so I'll hide behind my usual "blues/country isn't usually my genre" excuse when I give this a low 3.

Understand why it's on the list. Didn't bother me to listen to but it didn't grab my attention even though it had more than an hour to do so. (Maybe one or two songs got some attention.) Would not listen to again.

I’m starting to feel like Debbie downer on my reviews,since again a strong band name, did not impress. I was excited when I saw the tile & band. I was expecting an explosion of fun but didn’t even get a fizzle from this production. I have so many favorite Jagger songs and Rolling Stone Albums but this is one I will not recommend to others. I was wondering when we would see a Rolling Stones album come up since everyone loves them so much. I do include myself slightly in that “everyone” but when it came to rock, I had many other bands I liked more so I’ve never listened to a full stones album. I like the album cover, very scrapbooky but they also use duplicate photos so there is a touch of laziness to it but it was the 70’s. This is another band where I struggle to hear what Mick is saying but don’t mind too much because I love his voice and the music is really good. I’m noticing that right off the bat on Rocks Off. Rip this Joint is also really fun. I’m hopefully sensing a theme for this album with these easy to dance to type songs you’d hear in a tavern with the pianos and brass. Woah, Shake Your Hips sounds a lot like La Grange from ZZ Top, who made it first? Uh oh, La Grange came out in 1973…and it sounds better than this song. Casino Boogie! For some reason I really like that song title. Wish I liked the song, doesn’t feel like the kind of Casino Boogie I was expecting. Despite me not being a huge stones fan, I’m really learning to appreciate them with this listen. Hearing the sound they are creating on this album really does feel like they could have been an old timey saloon band. I wonder when exactly they shifted to the more stadium rock they are known for now. Kudos for Turd On the Run, that’s an all timer of a title. I’ve been just cruising through these songs like they are on the soundtrack of Red Dead Redemption. After listening to the whole album, I really enjoyed it. My favorite songs were Tumbling Dice and Torn and Frayed.

This project is showing to me that I like Rolling Stones much more than I tough before these first 120 albums listened from the list. However, this is the third Rolling Stones selected in my list and I think that is the worst (the other two were awesome and this one is just good). I liked much more of this album because of the Wikipedia link. The history of this album and its production gave me another perspective of it, even wich the songs nothing touching me in any way. It worth it, but this is not the Rolling Stones album that I'll listen to in the near future.

Psé. Un poco blues

Having just reviewed London Callling, it is extremely appropriate NOT to just say the same thing about an album that most critics think is the best issued by the Rolling Stones. What makes this special is the constant presence of Richards and Taylors guitars -- riffs and solos. But I'm going to step back and NOT give a 5.

This album is heavy on American blues and gospel influence and each song carries a deliberation to it that can only be described as the spirit of rock n roll. At over an hour long, this album contains its fair share of toe-tappers with mediocre songs interspersed throughout. The background singers alone are reason enough to like this album. Listening while under the influence is recommended.

Stones when they are past their pop phase, getting some great rock & roll, country, and blues grooves. Absolute classic!

Un disco homogéneo, rockero, con sus destellos de blues, country, todo, quizá se siente largo no sólo por la duración, sino porque a veces parece que hay dos canciones iguales. Sin embargo, soy fan. "Rocks Off" es un rolón y otras que me gustaron: "Casino Boogie", "Sweet Virginia", "Ventilator Blues", otro rolononón "Let It Loose" y prácticamente las que vienen después me parecen muy buen final. 9/10

I have always respected this Stones album with it's diverse rock-n-roll, blues, and country flavours. There are some phenomenal songs on this record, especially the "non-hits" and slower tempo like Sweet Virginia, Torn and Frayed, Sweet Black Angel, Loving Cup, Let It Loose, and Shine A Light. HOWEVER, I am just not a Stones guy. Jagger's voice has always made me want to slap him. In the end, my respect for EOMS still doesn't translate to pleasing to my ears overall.

Bored of these Rolling Stones albums already.

Apparently this is the most revered Rolling Stones album, near the top of lots of lists of all-time albums. I've always liked the Rolling Stones, but that's mostly based on singles. It's possible the only album I've listened to is Blue & Lonesome from 2016. Anyhow, this album is...fine. I like this kind of music, the style is very consistent, and nothing here is bad. Unfortunately it bored me. Where are the hits? Where are the hooks? Why are people calling this one of the greatest rock albums of all time? I don't get it. It's long, but it slipped into the background almost immediately so I hardly noticed the length. Exile me if you must, but I think I'd rather relisten to their 2016 album. This supposed masterpiece is simply a-okay. My review might seem harsher than my rating, but that's because it's the Rolling Stones and I was expecting to have my socks blown off. At least I can report that no Stuarts were involved in the making of this album. Favorite tracks: Shake Your Hips, Let it Loose, Shine a Light. Album art: I recognized it immediately, but it's not very interesting. Every time I try to look at the individual pictures and see if any are cool, I look away within five seconds, "I couldn't care less." Fits the album I suppose. 3/5

Classic, good afternoon sun album

Raw blues rock. The Stones at their most elemental - despite being disjointed they still managed to produce a rock classic

Perfect alvum

So, I'll admit it, I've never listened to a rolling stones album before. For my first time, I have to say that I really enjoy this album! I love how bluesy this album is, but in a hard-rock kind of way. It sounds so rough and abrasive, it really makes me realize why its called "rock and roll". It makes me feel like I'm on the road, in a freeing sense. I can clearly hear how much this album has been influenced by previous works, but perfected it, which explains why this album holds up so well againts modern bands that have clearly been inspired by the rolling stones. As far as blues-inspired rock goes, this is the best that I've ever heard. Also, I want to point out that there is no Stuart in this band, but there is an Ian Stewart which maybe counts towards our Stuart marathon.

the Rolling Stones will always be great even if some of the blues stuff is a bit bleurgh. saying that, ‘Ventilator Blues’ is one of the best tracks. I hope they have other albums on here.

So much fun

Lovely bluesy sound

Before I listened to this album the first time (late 80s), the Rolling Stones were mostly part of the background radiation to me, a ubiquitous presence I was always aware of but thought about little. A friend turned me on to Exile and it captured my full attention immediately. Hardly any filler, compared to most double albums.

Very cool. A party I definitely want to be part of.

It's an okay album.

Tumbling Dice and Ventilator Blues are the standout tracks here. Most other tracks are promising but ultimately fall flat, and its clear that ZZ Top took inspration from Shake Your Hips and All Down the Line to create Lagrange and Move Me On Down The Line for their Tres Hombres album in '73. Exile sounds exactly like what it is: a hodgepodge of half-fleshed songs, recorded in three different places in three different periods of heavy drug use, arranged in an aimless sequence. 2/5: niether terrible or remarkable

Honky Tonk Beatles strikes again

Love this album so much. Tons of variety and the playing is on point. This is about as good as rock n roll gets

The Stones isolated themselves to come up with this double album and jamming out tunes using their unused riffs and songs plus adding completely new songs. The style is a combination of blues, rock, gospel, r&b, jazz and country, yet with so many genres and tracks, the music still manages to sound the same and get stale by the end. The Stones have done much better than this.

I've never cared about the rolling stones. I don't know why so many "rock guys" think they're the beginning of music as we know it. Like Keith Richards is the first guitarist that mattered. I don't care how immortal he supposedly is. It just sounds like bluesy rock. I guess they get a pass for being less annoying than the Beatles. A couple of the songs have cool solos, too. 3/5.
