alltid skeptisk til live album

It's quite a weird experience to listen to an album where the fans are screaming in adulation for a band they clearly love and I'm sat there wondering what all the fuss is about. The music itself; on the plus side they have plenty of energy. On the downside; it's all a bit samey. It's just bland generic riff rock to these ears. Maybe you had to be there.

Can't say that I found this enthralling, inoffensive is probably about as kind as I can be.

Great guitar riffs, but not sure why this particular live album is on the 1001 list.

I wanted to like this album more than I did. Cheap Trick is a very hit-or-miss band for me, and really, their live albums are the only ones I've even given a second thought to (I truly dislike their studio recordings; such a different energy). The set played Nippon Budokan was a little too jarring for me. Not bad, but not my thing.

I mean, it's pretty disappointing. I already liked I Want You To Want Me and Surrender. But I can't stand love albums as a general rule and this is no exception. Again, sure it's great being there, bit it just translates to muddy generic noise on the release. The start is very dull. I only perked up when they did a bit of T Rex. There are good songs, as above, but it just made me long for a studio versions.

live albums are for fans of the band. they're very tight, but what does that matter if they just play cheesy shit?

cheap trick are an average band and one i’m not overly excited about. it makes sense that the version of “i want you to want me” that everyone knows is this live version! there’s magic there, even if the song has become old for me. really, this is a passable live album and my ears did not bleed. but meh also—yikes, this sound production is awful! for being such a well known album, you’d think the quality would be better, or that the album was from before 1950, not 1978!

I'd normally avoid live albums, and this would have been no exception. It was just boring.

Not bad, but not something that I feel drawn to. Sounds like a lesser Thin Lizzy to me. Decently captures the feel of a live rock show though, and some good moments elevate this. Need Your Love is a highlight.

I'm about 40 minutes away from Rockford, Illinois right now so I have to be careful about what I say or the Cheap Trick assassins will come for me. This is not a good album. It isn't recorded well, but it is a live album from 1978 so that is forgivable. The music isn't my thing either. But given that this album was the launching point for their popularity in the United States and formative to the hard rock genre in the US as well I understand its place on this list. But my rating is lowered because I hate live albums. "I Want You to Want Me" and "Surrender" are all time classic songs, but I still prefer the album versions.

I find Cheap Trick’s songs to be generic rock filler. Nothing exciting. I Wany You To Want Me is memorable. The rest. Meh.

I owned the Bob Dylan at Budokan Album and there weren't thousands of screaming teenage girls on that one. This could have been worse. One of the good things about live LPs, I reckon, is that they narrow the gap between good and bad bands. And Cheap Trick sounds like a pretty good live band.

Without question, this vocal affect sounds beyond stupid in 2022. Not that many vocal affects today aren't beyond stupid, they just don't *sound* it yet. Crucial difference, that. How to describe said vocals? I dunno. Like Rod Stewart had sex with someone much less talented? Though that happened. Lots of times. And to my knowledge they didn't form Cheap Trick. Whatever. Vocals aside, they batter the drums good and proper, do the old up and down movement on the guitar nice and aggresive, finger the neck when they're feeling frisky, and keep things slick and quick. Except when they don't. Which is a mistake. Eight minutes and forty-six seconds is not territory this kind of band should step foot in. Fuck knows what they're yowling about. Probably abandonment. "Dad, where are you?" "Rod, why don't you love me?" Etc.

I'm not a huge fan of live albums. I generally prefer listening to studio versions of things. However this did lead to me to check out more Cheap Trick and I did find some songs I liked such as "I want you to want me" and "Surrender". The latter of which I remember hearing on BBC Radio 2 back in the day but not remember the name of or who did it.

For me, Cheap Trick are one of those bands that you've heard of, without really knowing why. I recall "The Flame" catching my attention in the late '80s, but I wouldn't be able to name another of their tracks. So, I was keen to find out what their earlier work sounded like, but the experience was quite disappointing. The kindest thing to say was that it sounded like the crowd present at this live gig were enjoying themselves a great deal. As for me, I've heard better performances from pub bands in Camden or at one of the smaller stages at Glastonbury. Perhaps the quality of the recording played a part, but most of the tracks were basic, formulaic and unimaginative, with the exception of "Surrender" and "I Want You To Want Me". I'd hoped for more.

I have a problem with live albums of Bands I don't know. If I don't know the source material I'm rarely moved. As in this case.

You already know I don't want to listen to this album and Apple music made it even easier by not having it in their album list. The only Cheap Trick I see is this list trying to make me listen to another live album.

I couldn't get over the distracting fans in-between songs. Why would a live album be on this list??

Man, their biggest hits strike me as so cloying. A fine pop-rock live record otherwise.

Surrender es una canción que me ha encantado desde hace más de 20 años, llevo todo el día con la canción pegada y no me he molestado. Lo malo es que es lo único de Cheap Trick que me ha llamado la atención. Varias veces en esos años les he intentado agarrar el gusto y nomás no. Se supone que mucha gente los considera como super importantes, Kurt Cobain los mencionaba junto con los Melvins y los Smiths como sus influencias fuertes, pero yo simplemente no veo más que rock 70s muy estándar, nada que no estuvieran haciendo Boston o Journey mejor en su momento. Mucha gente los clasifica como Powerpop pero a mi gusto son muy contadas sus canciones (como I Want You To Want Me que aparte es una canción bien a secas) que entran en ese rubro y, de nuevo, nada que Blondie o tantas bandas más no hicieran mejor. Que chingona es Surrender.

It's just alright.

Takes a while to warm up. Kinda boring if I’m honest. I guess this was up against disco and soft rock making it more influential as “hard” but it’s just kinda meh to me. One or two good tracks doesn’t make this a great album for me.

I think this list has more non-Japanese bands playing live in Japan then it does Japanese bands in general. Anyways, this is slush except for the one song everyone knows, which is degraded by being next to all the similar sounding bad tracks. It's so deeply empty and soulless, the entire thing is sung in this resigned tone that results in even the band sounding bored. The only positive I'll say is that the audience at the Budokan are almost a character into themselves. You can tell they're so deeply into it, the cheers at the end of the songs are immense. This list just fundamentally irritates me that at the height of City Pop THIS is one of the only things here that was recorded in Japan.

Cheap Trick sound exactly as their name suggests. A cheap rock ’n’ roll trick or, to put it a bit more sexistly: hard rock for little screaming Japanese girls. Because if you strip away the screeching during the concert recording, the flowing manes, the unbuttoned shirts and the bare chests on display, all that’s left is very ordinary boogie rock, somewhere between Status Quo and the Bay City Rollers. Cheesy pop music for teenagers, with electric guitars and simple lyrics about love and heartbreak.

Had to turn off midway through the second song. Misophonia kicked in hard - such a bad recording of mediocre power pop. Started listening to Robyn's new one instead. Lovely stuff.

In stead of this garbage, I listened to Milton Naciemento and Lo Borges' album Clube Da Esquina. That is a true 5 star experience. This garbage I can't even get through one song. How cringe is this? It's not aged very well.

I'm sure live albums are an important part of music history. This one is probably not one of them. I'm sure there are 1980s dad rock bands worthy of reevaluation. However hard I Want You to Want Me went in 10 Things I Hate About You, I don't think this is one of them either. Honestly a little insulting for this to be on the list at all, especially to the hundreds of artists who have put out much better music, even if confining ourselves to the Western Anglophone rock tradition which this list biases, and shows the myopia of this list (as with most of this kind).

There are quite a few albums on this list that I question why they are even here to begin with, and a live album is such a warning to me. This is yet another crappy live recording that is taking up the place of an album that’s worth being on this list. This recording in particular is bland, sounds prettt bad, and the band’s performance is messy. What a waste of time.

This has strong Frampton Comes Alive energy. How many girls named Jennifer were conceived to “I Want You to Want Me?”

I don't usually like live albums but this one is particularly bad. It doesnt bring you in to the show, there's no showmanship or anything added in the performance. Its just like a worse version of a studio album with some Japanese girls screaming in the background. Awful.

I don't love Cheap Trick. Yeah, these guys suck. Big Eyes is like a crappy Black Sabbath cover. These guys and Ted Nugent must get along great. Need Your Love actually kind of rocks. Their Ain't That a Shame is a terrible cover. I Want You to Want Me is the hit, and this is the version you hear, and it is completely overrated. Announcing the name of every song before you play it is the equivalent of Missy Elliott calling every song on Under Construction "another Missy Elliott exclusive". Surrender is another big song for them and the opening chit chat ended up on a Beastie Boys song. Surrender is not good either.

Unlike all of the other live albums I've had from this list (Mr Cash I'm primarily looking at you sir) this album offers no particularly engaging 'live experience'. It didn't enhance the musical experience and didn't make me like the music any more. Sound quality is poor, songs are very uninspired in delivery and structure. Crowd engagement was virtually 0. Not sure of this inclusion.

Nah. I don't mind Cheap Trick (although not a real fan either), but the quality of the recording wasn't very good and the sound of the crowd was annoying. I don't get the point of this album.

A lot of screaming on here. I presume they were screaming to be let out? Strong "little people of Stone'enge" vibes going on. I've heard better live performances from third on the bill bands at my local pub.

Peak laziness putting a live Cheap Trick album on here. Old mates have some tunes but this makes me worry about how many of their studio albums are in here.

This Power Pop album feels cheap, all sharp riffs and high-spirited vocals drowned by the rush of performance and noise rather than musical refinement. Basically it's like binge drinking rather than enjoying the roch variety of alcoholic beverages.

I don't enjoy live albums. The whole point of live shows is to enjoy being there, it's not the same listening to below-par production and people screaming at home. Old live albums are even worse, the production is so messy the noise overwhelms me. My ears have been assaulted, it's causing anxiety. I couldn't finish it.

Live album hater strikes again!

Japenese fans will go crazy over anything...

Live albums are a finicky bunch to rate. On the one hand, some live albums are larger than life and can present a band in their best light. Some transcend the band's recorded work. Others are a really fun way to experience the band's music in a way you wouldn't get to normally, or just to relive a fun experience. This is neither. As a live album, this is pretty terrible as it captures more audience noise than band half the time, and none of the subtleties of Cheap Trick come through. Further, you really need to know the band and have an appreciation for them to get any enjoyment from this album. There's the one hit, but the rest are...fine? What I was left with was the distinct impression that this is best listened to after listening to another Cheap Trick album, or better yet left off the list entirely so other, more deserving bands could be represented.

A relief when it finished

I feel a bit bad giving this a 1, because it’s not horrifically bad. It’s very standard 70s rock, which deserves a solid 2 stars and it’s a live album, so I’m docking it another star. Maybe “my favourite” 1 star album, but it definitely doesn’t deserve to be on the list.

Hey ChatGPT, please give me the most average rock album from the 70s. Please make sure that it's a live recording and that its quality sucks. Seriously though, I didn't like anything about this album. None of the songs stayed with me afterwards. What's the point of including on this list so many "rock and roll" albums that are almost indistinguishable from each other? There's so much more interesting music out there.

Cheap trick is a new one for me but I do love a live album, so I was looking forward to giving this one a go. this felt like boring and generic rock. Nothing grabbed me at all. Uninspiring music. The crowd seemed flat. I have no idea how this album made the list as there is nothing new, different, or engaging about it. Unfortunately, this isn't the 1001 concerts you should see before you die. I also don't think that most people listening to music want to hear the prolonged intro/exit to the song followed by a bunch of screaming and wailing... otherwise, musicians would just record on a random street corner.

There's some other version of this album out there somewhere, right? One that's actually incredible and full of energy? There has to be. I have no idea how this is in this list of 1001 albums otherwise. How the hell is this in the top 500 albums of all time? How is this anywhere on anyone's list of top live albums. This is... I mean it's dog shit. Low energy minus the crowd going crazy because Japan is a weird place (no offense to the Japanese folks reading this, we're all weird in our own ways) and in the 70's this was as Midwestern American as a coke and a McDonald's burger. The playing is sloppy, the songs mostly suck. I Want You to Want Me and Surrender are obvious highlights but nowhere near good enough to save it. The same boomers bitching about how Taylor Swift is overhyped (or calling her actively bad) are gonna tell me this sell out bullshit wasn't the same nonsense? This is lowest common denominator rock designed for radio play. Seriously, I forgot that Cheap Trick existed and I'm looking forward to next week when I can do it again.

Live albums should not be on the list, in general. In particular this live album does nothing to demonstrate why anyone would listen to Cheap Trick, why anyone did listen to Cheap Trick or why anyone should. It's some generic hard rock songs with terrible mixing interspersed with screaming fans. The inclusion of live albums is self-indulgent nonsense and this one barely constitutes an actual album.

Woeful. Boring, artless dad rock. The biggest mystery is how much they paid the crowd to cheer between each song. Maybe they told them they were allowed to leave? The saving grace was how low the appalling singer was in the mix, so you couldn't hear whatever turdlets he was singing about.

Surprisingly dull for a live album

Who is screaming this loudly for Cheap Trick? The songs are boring and the album sounds so messy

What an unbearable waste of time. Live albums, just in their nature of being live, take so much away from the music whether it’s sound quality, energy, talent, whatever. I already am not the biggest fan of Cheap Trick, though I do like some of their songs. There’s no diversity to these tracks, each one is just like the last. I don’t want to go on too long about this album, though I could, because I’d rather just forget the whole thing (except I Want You to Want Me, that one hit for some reason). 1/5

Stop. With. The. Live. Albums. I literally don't know a Cheap Trick song, this is useless to me. Actually, I knew I Want You to Want Me and Surrender. Those were probably the best songs here, but that's not really saying much. Really don't like most of this. Very bland poppy hard rock. No thanks.

Man this sucks. I never liked their music, especially I Want You to Want Me. The rest of this was difficult to sit through. Apparently the crowd was into it but I guess there are a lot of people who enjoy shitty music.

For a live album it really lacks the energy and connection to a listener you would expect. My least favourite of these albums so far. Felt boring and repetitive lyrically and musically. Honestly nothing very interesting to note.

I remember when they were really big when I was young and I tried but I just didn't really like them. 40-ish years later, I tried again. Sorry, still don't.

This album sucks real bad. It's like when you go to a restaurant and the pictures of food on the menu look disgusting. Like, if you can't make it look good for the menu, how shitty will it be when you actually bring it to the table. That's what Cheap Trick live is like. The recording sucks, so it sucks worse live.

Gimmicky power pop that wasn't very good in the studio and even worse live. I really wonder what the authors were thinking when they included this in the list.

Got this record from the $.50 section of my local store. It’s the only time I’ve ever wanted my money back

A live album? FFS why? Music production exists for a reason. I do not need to hear the audience, they can get in the sea for all I care. Let's hear it again for music producers! OK. Track one and I'm skipping the rest of this album. A showboating drum solo may be electric when you're in an audience, caught up with a crowd. But listening at home? Nope, that's not cricket.
