10/10, super fun rock

I don’t know why I never got big into Cheap Trick. They consistently bring it live. I will say I like the whole and outro being songs. That is not done much anymore. Maybe it’s that the only song people know by them is “I Want You To Want Me.” And the crowd sounds like it was just a bunch of teenage girls, which is… creepy. Were they sex symbols back in the day? I really don’t know. “Surrender” keeps getting stuck in my head. Still a good song. Now it’s stuck in yours. You’re welcome.
I used to say that Cheap Trick's I Want You to Want Me is the only song whose live recorded version is better than the studio version. Still love that live version (the crowd chants ebb and flow with the music), don't know if the rest of this live album always captures the same essence. It's not just about screaming fans, it's about fans being in rhythm with a band that is in full control of its delivery. The back half of the album approaches that - Clock Strikes Ten is a great encore performance (fully on fire by then) and the whole sequence from I Want You to Want Me to Surrender to Goodnight is humming. But you can hear the difference between that closer and its opener companion Hello There, where the latter is just a bit fuzzy and off (the recorded version of Hello There really rocks). I think it improves with each song but even by the time they hit Big Eyes it's still a bit labored. They nail it at Need Your Love - the fans are barely noticeable until two-thirds through but their quality of play for almost 9 minutes is awesome. They hit the pinnacle there and hold it for the rest of the concert/album. Impressive. So all in all a pretty darn good (live) album, and cool that its energy launched their career worldwide.

I've always heard that this is a definitive live album so my expectations were high. After listening to I wonder wtf the hype was about. This was bland and I've heard so many better live albums. 2.5/5
Really seemed quite generic and indistinct. Felt like I had heard some of it before, but maybe I was confusing each track with ones earlier in the set.
FAV TRACKS: SURRENDER (the only track i remotely enjoyed in a sea of filler tracks) This album is literally just rock but stripped down to it's most basic components. It becomes boring after some time and you are practically waiting for it to end. I see the appeal in such albums, but personally don't really enjoy it. The basic talent is there, the energy is there, the enthusiasm is there but yet there isn't much diversity between songs. 4/10 😴😴
I've always felt "Surrender" is one of the all-time teenage rock anthems, so I was really anticipating loving this live album. However, I was left underwhelmed by the first half, feeling like it dragged and felt like a generic rock show. But once it hit "Need Your Love" I was pretty impressed and that stretch lasted until the end of the album.
Those Japanese people really know how to bring the energy to a concert. Great music too from the boys in the band

I had no idea Cheap Trick were good. The guitar tone is the hero of this album. I'm not sure what I would think about the rest of it with that component missing, but I don't have to, because it's there, and it's spectacular.
A really decent live album, actually sounds live and great guitar and vocals. I've never really listened to Cheap Trick and I don't think I'll seek their albums out, but I did enjoy this one. Very weird to hear I Want You to Want Me after hearing the cover so many times watching 10 Things I Hate About You.

This album sucks real bad. It's like when you go to a restaurant and the pictures of food on the menu look disgusting. Like, if you can't make it look good for the menu, how shitty will it be when you actually bring it to the table. That's what Cheap Trick live is like. The recording sucks, so it sucks worse live.
Nothing against Cheap Trick, but 38 live tracks is a lot of Cheap Trick.

One of the all-time great live albums. The set is perfect, and there's a reason this is the prime version of I Want You To Want Me!
The only way to listen to "I want you to want me", a great live album and one of my favourite Cheap Trick tunes of all time Surrender...but I still prefer the record version of that one.
I was a bit skeptical when I saw that this was a live album, but this was pretty great! Good sound quality, and literally every single song was a banger. Definitely the most fun listening experience I've had so far!
It's quite a weird experience to listen to an album where the fans are screaming in adulation for a band they clearly love and I'm sat there wondering what all the fuss is about. The music itself; on the plus side they have plenty of energy. On the downside; it's all a bit samey. It's just bland generic riff rock to these ears. Maybe you had to be there.
Was an enjoyable album of the genre about the genre for the genre. Sounded great live, a live album made sense.
Can't say that I found this enthralling, inoffensive is probably about as kind as I can be.

I wanted to like this album more than I did. Cheap Trick is a very hit-or-miss band for me, and really, their live albums are the only ones I've even given a second thought to (I truly dislike their studio recordings; such a different energy). The set played Nippon Budokan was a little too jarring for me. Not bad, but not my thing.

I mean, it's pretty disappointing. I already liked I Want You To Want Me and Surrender. But I can't stand love albums as a general rule and this is no exception. Again, sure it's great being there, bit it just translates to muddy generic noise on the release. The start is very dull. I only perked up when they did a bit of T Rex. There are good songs, as above, but it just made me long for a studio versions.

Not that familiar with Cheap Trick, other than I want you to want me, and their quirky visual presentation. Quite like the slightly poppy hard rock sound and remember Live at Budokan was rated as a live album (at a time when live albums were very much in vogue). Listening to this, it's okay, some decent tracks - Surrender, I want you..., - and some fine riffing and solos from the idiosyncratic Rick Nielsen. But there is a sameness about most of the songs and a sense that they are caught somewhere between hard rock, powerpop and new wave. Nothing to write home about

Only ever heard of 'I want you to want me' but enjoyed this album. I think I need to listen to a studio version, the live in concert was very up tempo and I'm curious if that holds true with studio recordings.
Oof. I like Cheap Trick, but the live version just felt like noise for the most part. I think this makes me old. Might be cooler on vinyl, idk.

I don't particularly care for live albums; however, Cheap Trick has some really well known songs and they are on this album. It was relatively short. I would prefer the non-live album versions but still was good.

I liked this more than I thought I would - which is not saying much because I expected to hate it. I don't like the band, I don't like live albums. But the songs were exciting and the audience added too the ambiance in a way that added to the excitement, rather than simply be distracting.
Nothing against Cheap Trick, but I prefer the studio versions of these songs...by far.
Interesting read about this one since initially I did not understand why this live album was on this list vs. their normal ones. It seems this was their best-selling album of all time(?) due to how big in Japan they were, which translated into becoming bigger everywhere else. It never hurts to show people how many other people are into you, I suppose. Beyond that, it's fine. It's a typical live album for me.
cheap trick are an average band and one i’m not overly excited about. it makes sense that the version of “i want you to want me” that everyone knows is this live version! there’s magic there, even if the song has become old for me. really, this is a passable live album and my ears did not bleed. but meh also—yikes, this sound production is awful! for being such a well known album, you’d think the quality would be better, or that the album was from before 1950, not 1978!
This is an interesting one. I liked this album okay, but my review is mostly negative and/or critical. So here goes: "I Want You To Want Me" is probably one of the most famous and well loved live recordings, ever. But why? Well, because the original album version is bland as hell and this album pumps SOME life into it. While the results are not quite as dramatic as with "I Want You To Want Me", you can take that same train of thought for their entire discography up to this point in time and apply it to this album. That is basically what this album is: a compilation of their passable songs, but live and with a little bit more life breathed into some otherwise pretty dull studio recordings. There's a reason it took this album to put Cheap Trick on the map. And there's a reason why they were not on the map much AFTER this album. Again, I liked this album okay; I was rocking along throughout most of it. But looking at this as a live album, it is not anything particularly special. There's not really a "spark" on this album to make it feel like a live album. If the source material is incredibly dull, and you rehash it mostly as is but spice it up a tiny bit, does that really make it an iconic live album? You wouldn't know this was a live album if it wasn't for the fans shouting and the band telling the fans what song is coming up next. There's just no magic in terms of a live album. Not to mention, the recording and production quality is actually not great. This is still Cheap Trick's highest selling album, and is often regarded as one of the best live albums ever (and some even say one of the best albums ever, period). But when the source material is boring, and you compile your best tracks into an album and make it slightly more interesting, calling it any of these things almost feels like a bit of a grift. Let's call it what it is: this is just a passable pseudo "greatest hits" album.
I'd normally avoid live albums, and this would have been no exception. It was just boring.

Loads of enthusiasm, great guitar sound, proper rockers - but apart from I want you to want me and Goodnight, the songs weren't up to scratch. Shame, as they otherwise embody the true spirit of rock.
Not a fan of live albums , especially from earlier on in the decade, but this is class. No nonsense rock songs capturing the excitement of the concert with excellent production and sound quality

Not bad, but not something that I feel drawn to. Sounds like a lesser Thin Lizzy to me. Decently captures the feel of a live rock show though, and some good moments elevate this. Need Your Love is a highlight.

I'm about 40 minutes away from Rockford, Illinois right now so I have to be careful about what I say or the Cheap Trick assassins will come for me. This is not a good album. It isn't recorded well, but it is a live album from 1978 so that is forgivable. The music isn't my thing either. But given that this album was the launching point for their popularity in the United States and formative to the hard rock genre in the US as well I understand its place on this list. But my rating is lowered because I hate live albums. "I Want You to Want Me" and "Surrender" are all time classic songs, but I still prefer the album versions.
I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. At the end of the day, it's a live album with a ton of screaming. We couldn't get a Cheap Trick studio album on the list instead? Best track: Surrender

I want you to want to listen to this album because it kicks ass. Love the live vibe of At Budokan, screaming fans and loud music. This album seems to bridge the gap between classic rock and 80's hair bands. Some great stuff on this that often gets overlooked. For everyone that doesn't think there's anything worth listening to between Zeppelin and Halen, please check out this album.
The first half of the album wasn't really what I expected from the band I knew from "I Want You To Want Me" and "Surrender." It was heavier, but nothing really stood out. The two hits, on the other hand, have great catchy hooks. This live album was Cheap Trick's most popular, feeding off their apparent Japanese fandom, but the recording is a bit underwhelming.
I find Cheap Trick’s songs to be generic rock filler. Nothing exciting. I Wany You To Want Me is memorable. The rest. Meh.

Big "hair metal" music, fitting that it's a live album as I'm sure they're great live. as it is better than average but didn't blow me away
A tight rock and roll set played in front of a jubilant Japanese audience. The break between each track reveals an almost beatlemania-esqe fervor amongst the crowd, which had to have been a thrill for the band as well! I feel like the energy just exploded on 'Come On, Come On', relented a bit during 'Need Your Love', and then just hard charged all the way through to the 'Clock Strikes Ten' encore. Also, the 'Hello There' and 'Goodnight' bookend tracks on the performance were a nice touch of showmanship. All told, this had to have been an epic show and is translated fantastically to recording, which is saying a lot for a live performance. Bonus points for 'Surrender' starting off with a sound bite that was sampled by the Beastie Boys.

There was a certain consumerism magic about Japan in the mid to late 70s. All the trinkets sold in dollar stores said "made in Japan" rather than "made in China'', the energy crisis had people turning away from the North American gas guzzlers and buying Honda Civics, and the most sought after Beatles bootleg was called "Five Nights in a Judo arena" which was also recorded at Budokan. Cheap Trick's live album was perfectly timed to benefit from the thirst for all things from Japan. Too bad the album sucks.
I owned the Bob Dylan at Budokan Album and there weren't thousands of screaming teenage girls on that one. This could have been worse. One of the good things about live LPs, I reckon, is that they narrow the gap between good and bad bands. And Cheap Trick sounds like a pretty good live band.

⭐⭐⭐ Not bad rock. Not stellar, but not bad.
Best Song: Need Your Love. The rhythm section really carries here. The latter half of the song is a real nice driving groove, which smartly dips in intensity before grinding forward into a stronger climactic end. It is also devoid of any vocals, which doesn't feel like a coincidence. Worst Song: Big Eyes. Whiny sounding hook. Overall: Feels odd to have a live album here. Is Cheap Trick notably worse in studio? Even as a live recording, the audience almost sounded fake, so I don't think the live atmosphere helped the cause here. Regardless, whenever the vocalist entered the fray it just sounded like fairly standard, Big Hair Rock. Better left as a hard rock instrumental group.
This makes three live albums in a row. Have I angered the album generator in some way? The audio quality is worse than the last one, which was 10 years older. Although it is actually better than the one time I accidentally saw Cheap Trick live (weirdly they were the surprise guest at a party I had stumbled into at Comdex one year, if memory serves, and it might not). Anyway, at least I am somewhat familiar with and fine with Cheap Trick. The album is fine, rocks along predictably, until they find a higher gear around halfway through, at which point it gets a lot more fun. By Surrender they are fully enjoying themselves. I can imagine leaving the show euphoric and full of energy. But I wasn't there, which is the inescapable tragedy of live albums. 2 stars first half, 4 stars second half, 3 stars overall. Which is perhaps a tad generous but what the heck.
Another overplayed classic that I never listened, aside from the hits. This is a fine live album that I think captures the energy of a live concert. I especially liked the intense mid-tempo scorcher; Need Your Love. That song starts off a particularly strong 4 song run that winds up with that high school dance mainstay; Surrender. The album does fall prey to some mid 70s live album cliches, ie not one but two needless (thankfully short), drum solos. Despite that a pleasurable listen; 3.5 🌟

Little (adjective) = small in size, amount, or degree (often used to convey an appealing diminutiveness or express an affectionate or condescending attitude). Little girl (noun) = a female child, especially younger than 10 years of age; a weak-willed person. What is it with these classic rockers that they keep singing about little girls? ‘Come On, Come On,’ for example, features the lyrics (no need for a dictionary here): ‘Come on, come on, I know you can do it… there ain’t nothing to it, etc… I need you, I want you. Come a little closer to my face. Oh little girl I need you now.’ Same thing in the next song, ‘Lookout,’ where the singer warns the lonely little girl, to lookout, because he’s coming. Man, that’s creepy! I blame all this on Jerry Lee Lewis when, in 1958 at the age of 22, he married his 13 year old cousin, Myra. I’m not accusing the members of Cheap Trick of pedophilia. I’m just creeped out by the usage of that term, that’s all. Not that Cheap Trick puts a lot of thought or time into their lyrics. With the exclusion of ‘Surrender,’ these are pretty trite, stereotypical 1970s stadium rock thoughts and feelings. Sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll. Except that Cheap Trick doesn’t really do any rolling. Just a lot of rockin’. Proof of that is on their cover of the great Fats Domino hit, ‘Ain’t That a Shame.’ Fats’ original is sweatin’ with Louisiana bayou roll, while Cheap Trick’s version is just plain rock. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. It’s just the difference between an average rock band and a great rock band, like the Rolling Stones, who most definitely rock AND roll. I was actually a little surprised at how average they really are. I think guitarist Rick Nielsen’s visuals (if you’re actually watching him perform live or on YouTube) are so entertaining that you don’t realize until you just listen to 'At Budokan' that he’s just ok. Interestingly, it’s on ‘Ain’t That a Shame,’ that he delivers his best solo. But hey, he’s still better than me, so upturned cap’s off to the guy. And the rest of the boys follow suit- not bad, not great, just ok. I think this LP captures more of the feel of what it was like in 1978 to be in attendance at one of classic rock’s big stadium bands concerts than it does chronicling Cheap Trick’s own sound. This could just have easily been any number of live 70s stadium rock bands with the screaming 'little girls' who open and close the LP, the long intros and outros, audience sing-a-longs, etc. Hey, it is what it is. I’m familiar with Cheap Trick. I had a good friend in college who loved this band and this particular album. Played it all the time. I knew what it was going to be, and not. It’s a fun album to assist your mundane housekeeping chores or to motivate you to exercise. And, I suppose a couple of drinks (or a couple of hits off of one of mom & dad’s ‘numbers’ they were rolling on the couch while listening to Kiss) would render the listener a little less picky about things like lyrics or guitar solos. This is probably why former first lady Nancy Reagan was not a Cheap Trick fan. You know, the whole ‘Just Say No’ campaign back in the day. That, and she was no 'little girl' herself in 1978. The little girls who were there, though, for the two shows at the end of April at the Nippon Budokan venue in Tokyo, well, let’s just say that there could have been a few babies born in January of 1979 who were half Japanese and half American. And whoever coupled with the singer and bass player on the cover pic got some good looking kids. The guitarist and drummer’s children, on the other hand (and google their pic on the back cover of At Budokan)? That would be, genetically speaking, a real cheap trick.

I generally do not enjoy live concerts as much as studio albums, and while this was no exception, I didn't mind it so much. I enjoyed the riffs and "jamming" but it also made a lot of the songs fade into the background as generic "rock music".
A band that can sound better live than on the albums is a rare treat. Cheap Trick is one of those bands. Great songs but it was even better hearing them live.

The songs themselves were mostly unremarkable, but the performance put into them was stellar. I would have loved to be in the audience that day, but as a listen-at-home experience it lands squarely in "pretty good"

A live album? FFS why? Music production exists for a reason. I do not need to hear the audience, they can get in the sea for all I care. Let's hear it again for music producers! OK. Track one and I'm skipping the rest of this album. A showboating drum solo may be electric when you're in an audience, caught up with a crowd. But listening at home? Nope, that's not cricket.

I was never a huge Cheap Trick fan - they’re fine but there are better bands from that genre. Also I’m not a big fan of live albums! So this was never likely to be a big hit for me. It’s ok but nothing special
Some unexpectedly cracking super heavy power pop/rock with chugging guitars, melodic hooks, and a passing nod to the Ramones, let down by some shonky recording and production of the live set. Better than I expected.
The story behind this album and the impact it had on this band's success is so interesting. While it has a level of energy and excitement that isn't entirely uncommon for a live album, it is notable for the fact that it is coming from a largely unknown and not mainstream band at the time. I guess they were "big in Japan" after all.
Without question, this vocal affect sounds beyond stupid in 2022. Not that many vocal affects today aren't beyond stupid, they just don't *sound* it yet. Crucial difference, that. How to describe said vocals? I dunno. Like Rod Stewart had sex with someone much less talented? Though that happened. Lots of times. And to my knowledge they didn't form Cheap Trick. Whatever. Vocals aside, they batter the drums good and proper, do the old up and down movement on the guitar nice and aggresive, finger the neck when they're feeling frisky, and keep things slick and quick. Except when they don't. Which is a mistake. Eight minutes and forty-six seconds is not territory this kind of band should step foot in. Fuck knows what they're yowling about. Probably abandonment. "Dad, where are you?" "Rod, why don't you love me?" Etc.
Live music by great musicians. Has the original feel of the 1978 show as they have not dubbed out the audience. Standard classics like "I Want You To Want Me", jammy jams like "Need Your Love"and rounded out with a book like opening and ending with "Hello There" and Goodnight". Good experience but always listen to my music on Apple Music featuring Apple Digital Master and Lossless Audio and headphones.
Growing up in Wisconsin in the 70s, my friends and I would gather in a buddy's basement and listen to this album a ton, while enjoying the finer cabbage from the garden. I look back on those days as character defining. One friend went on to become pretty famous, another got into some trouble with assaults and joined a cult. As adults we're no longer to much in touch, but every time I hear this album and in particular the famous 'I want you to want me', I go back to that basement and think HELLO WISCONSIN!!
OK, it's a piece of history, but is it good music with lasting effect?

Pure power pop. Only a handful of songs are that memorable or engaging. The screaming crowd is half the story ... almost like an instrument ... Robin Z seems to address it slowly and loudly, like a bad, monolingual tourist. So tight and energetic, but oh so bubble-gummy.

One of the seminal live albums, which comes with an energy not found on their studio output. The definitive version of I Want You to Want Me and Ain't That A Shame stand out above all the other tracks. Not a lot of crowd interaction, which is to be expected with the language barrier. But the crowd's energy in songs like I Want You To Want Me speaks for itself. Nothing groundbreaking, and starts off a little shaky, but a fun listen.
Just so great. I think in most cases a live recording in which the listener can hear the screaming fans during the actual songs might get old really fast, but I would argue that in the case of "At Budokan," the fans are what make this such a fun, energy-filled live album. They make "I Want You to Want Me" better, that's for sure. This version of "Surrender" is so much better than the studio version that they might as well be different songs. This is the high water mark for Cheap Trick.
I'm not a huge fan of live albums. I generally prefer listening to studio versions of things. However this did lead to me to check out more Cheap Trick and I did find some songs I liked such as "I want you to want me" and "Surrender". The latter of which I remember hearing on BBC Radio 2 back in the day but not remember the name of or who did it.
I love the sound of Japanese people losing their shit over a band I've never heard of. Oh yeah and the music was pretty good too.

This was a fun live album, particularly a great run of tunes from the 9 minute jam then ain't it a shame, want you to want me, and what sounded like their first time playing Surrender as they announced it was going to be on their new album. That was a great rendition of that tune, and the concert as a whole had great energy to it. I had a big classic rock phase and still enjoy it, but Cheap Trick wasn't a band I ever paid much attention to, but this makes it evident they were a fantastic live band.

It's great fun. That's all the summary you need. Getting into a little more depth, here we have a live album showcasing a band about to break through (in America; Japan caught onto the Cheap Trick gambit early on), and here we have a band relishing a moment of glory they'd assumed was fleeting. Also, the best of these songs are essentially indestructible, so we have a warm, melodic, upbeat band enjoying playing warm, melodic, upbeat rock. The middle sags slightly, presumably the time when you went to the bar or for a piss, but otherwise this album is pretty irresistible.
Have you ever bothered listening to the original studio version of "I Want You To Want Me"? It's completely different than the one on this album, which thankfully for all of our sakes became the gold standard. But that original version shot all the way to number one in Japan (it didn't even chart in America) and was the reason for this album's existence. But again, it's awful, capturing none of the magic that's evident on the live version that became a classic rock staple. The live version is such an improvement on the studio version that it was released as a single in America and immediately became Cheap Trick's biggest hit, peaking at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100. That shit seemingly happened all the time in the '70's (see: Kiss with "Rock & Roll All Nite", Peter Frampton and a number of his songs). Apparently the studio just stifled too many bands back then. Or maybe the old saying is true: Recording in the studio is masturbation, and playing live is having sex. Of course now "I Want You To Want Me" has become so ubiquitous to the point where I never want to hear it again. But "Surrender", on the other hand, is a jam I can't get enough of. The live version here is similar to the studio version that was released around the same time. "Surrender" is a piece of power pop perfection no matter how you slice it (although I prefer the studio version over the live one, but maybe that's because the Budokan crowd didn't sound very excited at the thought of Robin Zander's parents making out with Kiss records on the turntable). I can't help but be disappointed that Tim Burton didn't use "Big Eyes" as the theme song for his movie of the same name. A montage of Christoph Waltz selling paintings of people with big eyes to the sounds of Cheap Trick sounds like a missed opportunity if there ever was one.
I wanted to like this album, but like most live albums, this one falls a bit flat for me. I think the sound quality is better than a lot of live albums from preceding eras. However, a lot of the songs sound the same, and they have a very generic approach to rock. Outside of the two hit songs that Cheap Trick produced, every song on this album could be on a compilation called Generic Cock Rock. I'm glad Japan liked this band, because I sure as hell don't give a shit about them 3/5

3.8 - Wow, I never would've guessed I'd enjoy listening to this live album of 70s arena rock given "I Want You To Want Me" is its most significant track! Seriously, these guys slayed, as evidenced by the screaming adulations (undulations?) of their Japanese fans. It's not anything mind bending but it does rock hard.
I am a believer that music is meant to be heard live, but live albums rarely capture the experience. This album really takes off during Need Your Love and maintains that energy. 4/5

I don't really need a ton of this kind of music in my life but I have to give this extra points for being such an iconic live album. I think it's rare to really capture that exceptional live show magic, particularly for a big arena show.
A little underwhelmed with the album as a whole - wanted to like it more as I've always thought Cheap Trick was great. Surrender is a 20 top song of all time for me.

For me, Cheap Trick are one of those bands that you've heard of, without really knowing why. I recall "The Flame" catching my attention in the late '80s, but I wouldn't be able to name another of their tracks. So, I was keen to find out what their earlier work sounded like, but the experience was quite disappointing. The kindest thing to say was that it sounded like the crowd present at this live gig were enjoying themselves a great deal. As for me, I've heard better performances from pub bands in Camden or at one of the smaller stages at Glastonbury. Perhaps the quality of the recording played a part, but most of the tracks were basic, formulaic and unimaginative, with the exception of "Surrender" and "I Want You To Want Me". I'd hoped for more.
"Hello There" and "Goodnight" are kind of genius intro/outro songs -"Come On, Come On" gets into a nice fast groove -"Ain't That A Shame" has some great guitar stuff in it. I quite like the very fast paced call-and-response section -The drummer is great throughout the album -I've definitely heard "I Want You To Want Me" and "Surrender" before like on the radio or something -Very solid live album

Good ol' fashioned straight forward American Rock n' Roll. I've always been a off handed fan of Cheap Trick. Liked their radio hits. Never owned an album. Also, never been a fan of live recordings. The amazing thing about this is I only know two songs on this album but I could listen to it. A lot. I'm not blown away by the songs so much as the performance. They know how to put on a concert. They know how to drive it. It's all straight forward and fairly elementary but they do it on an expert level. Would love to see them live. As they say, they use every cheap trick in the book, but it works. It just works.

On opening, this sounds like a by-the-numbers hard rock album with nothing to offer. But by the end, you really get caught up in the infectious enthusiasm, the reaction of the crowd and the sheer unabashed joy the band spark as they do what they do best - we are here to rock. No pretence, no artifice, no hidden meaning - just enjoy.

I liked it, it has good energy. I don't love that it's a live album (although I get why this particular album is on the list, given it is the band's most sold album). There is just never a moment in my life that I want my music listening experience to be paired with loud audience screaming.
The point of a live album is to take everything that makes the studio album great and amp it up with the energy of a live show. Unfortunately, Cheap Trick is just a sloppy mess live, apparently. The hits are still good but everything is just... loose. And the recording isn't even hight quality. It's just not worth it, really.
Yes!! After two days of dark albums, I really needed the generator to send me something joyful. What can I say, hello there, welcome to the best live album ever! At Budokan captures Cheap Trick in a way that eludes their studio albums. Top notch '70s rock with sweet hooky melodies, rough edges and all. It's an album that fully rocks, still with all the brightness and warmth of the best power pop. "I Want You to Want Me" is the obvious star here, but all of the songs are a blast to listen to. Fave songs: Come On, Come On; I Want You to Want Me; Ain't That a Shame.

Ah yeah can't say this was offensive in any way. Good buzz, nothing remarkable. Never heard of the band, until of course I came to "I want you to want me". But even that sounded a bit lacklustre and lacking enthusiasm (at least compared to 10 things I hate about you). Also really enjoyed "Big Eyes". I do wonder what the criteria are for things making it onto a list of the most unmissable 1001 albums ever made. Never heard of this band, one massive hit, live album, kinda forgettable heavy rock/protopunk/protogrunge - was it influential? was it especially commercially successful? or a cult hit? Who knows, but they never made it onto my radar.

Again, it's a live concert, so it's not my favorite. I mean, I like Cheap Trick, but the screaming of fans and the crapshoot audio quality just knock it down.
Never really knew what to do with or where to put this band. However, this live album does keep the toe tapping. Flip-flopping between 2, 3 & 4.

Cheap Trick wouldn't be at the top of my list of favourite bands, to be honest I hadn't heard much of their work. But they really won me over with this album. This is a great live album. The band's performance & the crowd's energy really gets you going when listening to it. One of the biggest surprises I've had so far listening to all these albums.
De manière générale, j'aime bien les albums live. Pourtant, celui-ci manque cruellement de transitions entre les chansons, ce qui a tendance à me déplaire. Les Cheap Trick devraient en la matière prendre exemple sur le Nimmerland-Tour de RIN. Voici comment les concerts en question étaient structurés : - La première partie était assurée par le chanteur James Arthur, qui devait le plus souvent abréger sa prestation en raison du mécontentement de la salle. - RIN arrivait ensuite en tyrolienne en chantant justement des chants tyroliens avant d'enchaîner huit fois le morceau Dizzee Rascal type beat. - À mi-concert, l'incident des "deux merdes" donnait lieu à de longues minutes de négociations entre le rappeur et la frange costumée du public. - Juste avant le dernier morceau, RIN dévoilait sa carte maîtresse en invitant la voix française de Shark à le rejoindre sur scène devant des fans qui n'en croyaient pas leurs yeux. - RIN regagnait enfin sa loge où l'attendait Bausa et sa terrible influence.

Je ne mets pas 4 parce qu'il faudrait voir à pas trop se foutre de ma gueule non plus, si l'album etait si bien ils auraient probablement pris la peine de l'enregistrer en studio ces feignants, ça nous aurait évité d'écouter les groupies hurler a chaque fin de son.
Bit too whimsical for me
While their records were entertaining and full of skillful pop, it wasn't until At Budokan that Cheap Trick's vision truly gelled. Many of these songs, like "I Want You to Want Me" and "Big Eyes," were pleasant in their original form, but seemed more like sketches compared to the roaring versions on this album. With their ear-shatteringly loud guitars and sweet melodies, Cheap Trick unwittingly paved the way for much of the hard rock of the next decade, as well as a surprising amount of alternative rock of the 1990s, and it was At Budokan that captured the band in all of its power.

Eu realmente não entendo toda a questão dos álbuns ao vivo, a mágia dos concertos ao vivo é realmente estar lá ouvir gravações não me chama, mas pronto, tudo meio feitio da minha parte. Nunca ouvi Cheap Trick, sinto que não perdi nada, parece um glam rock um pouco banal, eles parecem ter alguma energia ao vivo, mas realmente não sei porquê tenho de ouvir isto antes de perecer. Hab's nicht ganz geschafft und Deezer hatte nur eine 35-Songs-Version. Aber: Das ist ja live! Min Menschen! Vielen Menschen! Was für eine Energie und welcher Spaß auf Seiten der Band und Freude im Publikum! Gute Rockbretter, teilweise könnte es Oasis sein (bzw. wohl eher umgekehrt).
Ich hab das erst heute Morgen gehört, da war es mir einfach zu viel. Konnte zwar stellenweise Freude an den Gitarrensolos finden, aber halt kein Album zum Aufstehen.

Good things: Loved that they had a "Hello" opener song and a closer "Goodbye" song. Good crowd interaction having people clap on "I Want You To Want Me", which is a really good song. Rocking out to Big Ben is a sick encore. Good rock n roll sound like Peter Frampton but a bit less sappy and a little more edgy. Still quite radio-friendly music to be honest, but it all sounds balanced. Bad things: "Lookout" and "Need Your Love" are quite forgettable songs (ignoring the savage guitar solos). Very close to giving it a 5.

Apparently at the start of Cheap Trick's Career, they put out 5 albums in only 3 years and this was the height of it all. You can tell, because the fans are totally fucking into it and their playing is full of energy. The songs are good enough that they perform well on a live stage, probably even better than the studio albums. But if we're talking live albums, I've heard plenty better performances so it doesn't blow me away by any means. File this one under "Good".

It’s some classic pop-rock and it’s damn good. They are also all good musicians especially the lead guitarist as showcased on Ain’t That a Shame. The solos are good and the band is really tight. It’s not deep or anything but it’s full of exciting upbeat bangers and that’s sometimes just what you need. Favorite songs: Come On, Come On; Big Eyes, Need Your Love, Ain’t That a Shame, I Want You to Want Me, Surrender Decent 8/10

I really hate this fucking album. Jesus Christ, Mary and Joseph I hate this album. Might I enumerate those ways in which thine sweet serenade doth fuckin piss me off? Listen close. First off, the singer has no soul. Like this nigga sounds like he isn't allowed to reveal that he's trapped in this band as a cosmic punishment for some heinous crime. Garbarge. that's one. Second off, this shit is literally - and I mean actually literally - not even partially artistic. Every song is boring. Every song is 100% predictable. Every song sounds like it was fabricated for the collective wet-dream of of the characters in that 70's show. wtf? This is fucking crazy. Bland as fuck, its like feeding my ears straight white rice cooked in distilled water. There's literally nothing here. And if you wanna get into the weeds, we can talk about specifics - incessant 4/4 shit-drumming; solos that sound 100% lackluster due to an unbelievable lack of tension, plus guitar solos that actually mimic real sounds in the world that are boring (the clock solo at the end is the ultimate example of this); The horribly awkward talking in the middle of most of the music: the 'i need some love' part was so bad it actually made a permanent change on my mood; How about that bass player? Talk about bullshit! He'snot doing anything. Take his ass out and replace him with a machine why don't you? And they shouted out that shitty drummer one too many times. That's two things. Now lets talk about the album as a whole. First off its live. Why? its worse this way. They are not exciting. They are not fun. They are not inspiring live. Their lyrics are harder to hear, which for me is a plus, but can’t be a plus for the crowd of 'women' - aka dads in drag or daughters who went to this concert to honor their dads or women who were looking for a hookup and 500 bucks and cocaine backstage. I genuinely can't believe that any of the women I heard in this crowd were there of their own free will, even if they think they were. I won't believe it, it'd be an insult to women. Classic Rock Dad, sure he's there. But wtf? In fact I'd like to see a phenomenological investigation of the aesthetic judgement of these women. The music was the equivalent of a 15 year old highschool mini-himbo (has-slept-with-4-young-women-and-thinks-hes-on-top-of-the-fucking-world-because-he-buys-ditch-weed-and-cries-to-cheap-trick-in-his-basement-while-his-single-mom-is-taking-out-the-trash-alone-...-again). That means it was also a work in neu-virility - you know? The whole 'Oh baby I need you so much and all my vulberable emotions are actually just expressed through my need to have a slam piece near me who doesn't hate my music' type shit. For women, its insidious self hate. For men, its right on the god damn mark. Either way, its lame af. That's three. Lyrically its about as mature as 5glo 10 years ago and sounds just as young on the ears. How can anyone justify basically talking about nothing interesting? Isn't tgis part of the rock corpus that old white guys point to to say music now is dying? How did these lyrics pre-empt the awkward, wan, inconsequentiality of modern lyricism, except without the very obvious cultural impetus for such a switch. Only song I had heard before was Surrender and they even made my hate that in this listen. Its actually almost artistic how trite the lyrics are. Sadly, they are clearly artless. 1/5, but really more like .9/10, the requiste score for 'music' in the broad sense. Harumph

Hieman haastava arvioitava sinänsä, että Cheap Trick ei ole nimenä minulle millään tavalla tuttu, eikä biisitkään kuulostaneet ennestään tutuilta. Näiden live-esityksiä pitäisi sitten arvioida. Mielestäni levy kuitenkin oli hyvä, soitto kuulosti energiseltä ja yleisön laulamista ja huuteluakin oli vähän saatu mukaan nauhoitukseen. Biiseistä jäi mieleen Need Your Love, Surrender ja Clock Strikes Ten.

It was an album. I don't like live albums, I don't really understand them. But, I had to listen to this one.
Was a little surprised to see a live album, especially as there doesn't seem to be anything particularly unique about the performance, but I get it was an important release for the band and I did really enjoy it. Great energy and good songs! Sound like a fun live band. 8/10

Great oldie…” I Want you to Want Me” and I loved the drummer in all the songs. Pretty lasting on the list of great rock n roll album. Also loved Surrender💿then and now. Mommy’s alright Daddy’s alright!

I have a problem with live albums of Bands I don't know. If I don't know the source material I'm rarely moved. As in this case.
Never heard of Cheap Trick before and have no idea what they sound like on a studio record, but this live album has great energy and seems to really capture the performance. A very engaging and enjoyable listen despite not knowing any of the songs. I do like the catchy rock songs, but am not really motivated to seek out the studio versions. I usually find live albums fall a bit flat, but I couldn't fault this recording or performance at all.
I quite liked it, at least as live albums go it sounded fun to be there unlike Emerson Lake and Palmer
Pues sí divertido, gran energía, momentos chidos, pero no gracias, no me quedan ganas de escucharlo de nuevo, salvo por Need Your Love que me suenan muy familiares los riffs y tiene un gran final. Mood: Chido para drogarse en un festival.

You already know I don't want to listen to this album and Apple music made it even easier by not having it in their album list. The only Cheap Trick I see is this list trying to make me listen to another live album.
This is probably the best, ballsiest sounding live record around. Big Eyes has huge energy on a weird guitar part that takes over the room like a big animal. turns out the audio is from Osaka and not at the Budokan, the recording there was a failure. FABULOUS ALBUM
I couldn't get over the distracting fans in-between songs. Why would a live album be on this list??
Gets better as it goes on, some recognisable tunes in there such as want you to want me and surrender
