Reviews (page 7 of 8)

This album is everything I dislike about stadium rock, without doing quite enough to make me truly hate it.

This is all pretty good, and the hits at the end are great, but I resent live albums being included in here so I'm docking a point to make it a 2

If I was at this concert I would have been booored out of my mind. At least they made the song in 10 Things I Hate About You

It's fine, but I'd literally rather listen to studio versions of the same material

I don’t like “I want you to want me” enough to knock this down to a 3. If it had Dream Police instead, it gets a 4

2.0 Such an extremely odd choice. This list has done well to shy away from live albums, only doing so when it's been slightly necessary (e.g. capturing the Grateful Deads early, non-album live performances). So why on earth a live album for a pretty naff one-hit wonder band, with poor fidelity to boot, is included is beyond me. There are probably 1001 better, more interesting live albums than this.

A couple of catchy and fun tracks. Seems like a nice atmosphere. Probably won't listen again though

It is o.k. but not a live-performance that thrills me. And so I rate it down as always just because it is a live-album. best known: "I Want You To Want Me", "Surrender"

Cheap Trick’s performance here is overall pretty MEH. Did not enjoy it at all. The only redeeming part of this live album is the crowd is HYPE AF.

naja. rock-pop aus den 70ern. und das war es.

p440. 1979. 2 stars. The musical equivalent of winning the lottery. Average US band with average songs somehow sells 3 million copies with a live album. WTF.

Not a huge fan of Cheap Trick. This recording has never sounded great to me either.

I thought I'd like more of these US AOR acts but this all just sounds dull and uninvolving

why is this on the list?

Pre-listening thoughts: uh oh a live album. But I freak with Surrender so maybe this will be good Post/during listening thoughts: yeah idk why I said that. There are very few bands where a live album should be their ONLY inclusion. Not sure why we didn’t just pick a studio album for these guys (or why they’re on the list at all. Always thought they were a one hit wonder). I mean it was FINE but like definitely not worth my time at all. 4/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no Fav tracks: Surrender Least fav tracks: half of the songs they just wailed on guitar for 5 mins I did not gaf

Not that well-recorded. Still pretty okay to listen to. Why exactly it's on this list, though, I have zero idea, given its run-of-the-mill 70s rock.

Pretty forgettable, but not too bad

Cheap Trick deserves credit for the influence they had on rock in the 80s and 90s but this live album is unnecessary. 5.5/10

There’s little to enjoy on this rather pedestrian dad rock

As established previously, I do not like a live album. I do like Cheap Trick (or at least, I liked their singles). So, very mixed feelings about this one. As an album I would never listen to it, though, so I'll give it a 2. Does anyone even like live albums? (I guess they must.) Highlights: 'I Want You to Want Me', 'Surrender'

The only songs I liked were the ones I already knew.

I don’t know why but I didn’t like this album at all

⭐️⭐️ 1001 ALBUMS- # 30 ‘Bud-o-kan’ this really be one of the best live albums ever recorded… The power pop genre has never really grabbed my interest, most of it feels rather childish and a little too accessible to really hook my analytical brain, preferring much more complex and layered arrangements. Having said that, it is hard to deny the straightforward catchiness of this feel good music, especially when well produced and executed. For a live album this lands rather well, however I do struggle with the notion of it being considered among the very best of its kind. Cheap Trick was really a one trick pony (as is the case with most power pop groups), truly unfathomable to me that this is the recording that brought them into the stratosphere of mainstream success, quite the intriguing story behind it with their Beatle-Mania esque reception in Japan that initiated this rise to fame following three studio records that fell flat commercially in the U.S. This album does capture the roar of that crowd, which the band clearly benefited from with the energy behind their performance delivery of the songs. There are some clear highlights here that would become mainstays in their catalogue, they are just not enough for me personally to want to revisit with any heightened interest. 🎧 Classic Track: I Want You to Want Me 🎧 Deep Cut Gem: Need Your Love 🚫 Skip Track: Clock Strikes Ten The tricks are cheap, but hey if this is your thing you'll likely have great fun with it. Hit the Thumbs Up icon below if you enjoyed my hot take on the album :)

Oh my God, this was hard going. The sheer tedium. Imagine being a young Japanese person in 1978, craving American culture and getting Cheap Trick and Jerry Lewis. Then imagine being a young American and gobbling up the bland pap that has been peddled overseas in your name. Then fast forward nearly 50 years later and imagine sitting in a lounge room in Australia, thinking you'd escaped being offered this mild excrement until one day you discover an app that shares a daily music discovery from years gone by in the name of broadening your mind and musical horizons, and it serves you this. When will it end? How do we break the cycle? Still, better than Morrissey. Two stars.

Never saw the appeal of Cheap Trick, Surrender is a lame song. Crowd is hype but the live album itself isn't a great one either. I suppose now I've at least given their big album a shot and it did nothing for me. Cheap Trick sucks.

Pretty generic 70s rock. 2/5

Nao gostei

I think the cultural significance of this is lost on me, as it sounds no better than a pub rock band running through some average songs.

Flojo.

I feel like at some point in the past I may have like this more and maybe I will I in the future. But not today unfortunately

It's the most emotionless piece of shit I've ever listened to

This album encapsulates the 70s for me, when there was a thin dividing line between hard rock and power pop music, bands were expected to throw in guitar solos, and lyrics were questionable at best. The songs are pretty bland, with some awful drumming, generic guitar, annoying vocals. There were a couple of songs around the two-thirds mark that I didn't outright hate, so I'm going with 2 stars.

Ugh! Not my thing.

another mid Japan live album

Carino ma non coinvolgente

This feels like what Spinal Tap was making fun of. Need your love is a good live track though and I like surrender/i want you to want me as those are just instant classics.

The sound is really muddy, but to be honest even if it were pristine and sharp this still wouldn't be my bag.

Live album, not my favourite. One big hit with a prolonged intro. Overall, meh. 2.5/5

Rocketing straight to mediocrity

It was probably better to be there.

I’m not a fan of live albums at the best of times and this one is just dull and the sound is terrible. Apparently it has cultural and aesthetic significance though so what the hell do I know?

Absolutely nothing going on here, I have bootlegs with better quality

certainly cheap, not many tricks

I like Cheap Trick, but I've never really gotten into live albums. I like live shows, but the sound quality always seems to suffer.

6/10 Highlights Aint that a shame Surrender

Really only included due to I Want You To Want Me (and it is a great and perhaps the definitive version of the song) and to a lesser extent Surrender. But wow this sounds every bit of standing in the middle of a crowd at a Cheap Trick live performance. And not in a good way. The sound isn't great and it's not particularly enjoyable. 4.25/10 (2.125/5)

The people of Japan enjoyed this way more than I did. I don’t care for the vast majority of the song and even though the band plays well, it’s not enough to keep me engaged.

Not for me.

Boring AF

Not very good quality of sound - a bit cheap really - only really saved by ain’t that enough and I want you

mjög lofað eða amk. umtalað bandarískt popprokk. ekki sérlega spenntur fyrir þessu. þarf ekki meira.

I don't see anything outstanding on this album that makes it worthy of being on this list—well, besides the crowd's screaming. Other than that? Nothing noteworthy.

Mercifully short. For starters, the intro is hardly even worthwhile is it? Compare this to the one on Status Quo's live album from three years earlier ffs. And then you get to the music... I can hear T Rex. I can hear Poison. I can hear the fucking Glitter Band. None of this is a good thing. What I don't hear is Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Motorhead or Hawkwind. I don't hear The Ramones. A few months later, Iron Maiden released their first album. Compared to this, that's a masterpiece - and I only gave it four stars. Fuck me, Slade were producing better music than this at the time. I suspect it's that American heavy metal is just a bit shit when it's not really, really good. There were songs on this that I knew vaguely - I think from some edition of Rockband we'd have played with the kids. I really don't care for it at all. I suppose it's not actively making me angry, so it can just about scrape two stars. But it really is just.

The amount of live records on this list is absurd really. The point of a live album is to somehow elevate the songs through raw energy, but this is just a playthrough.

Was okay, but nothing special that stood out to me.

It's alright but I think everything here is better in studio, especially surrender. The only exception to this would be "I want you to want me", I think that got a boost here. Outside of that meh

It was okay rock. A bit repetitive and cheesy

Live albums are hard enough for me to get in to at the best of times, with maybe a couple of exceptions, but At Budokan did wash over me slightly. I’ve never particularly listened to Cheap Trick except for a couple of obvious singles, and this brand of rock isn’t massively my thing, so it might have been good to know a few of these songs better before diving in to live versions of them.

Super tight live. The crowd appreciation was enjoyable. Just confirmed I’d already heard the only Cheap Trick so songs I need to, though.

I don’t like live albums

I get it, this is the one that really made them popular. It's significant, sure. I won't ever play it through again though; the recording quality and crowd noise make it a real disappointment overall. There are some reality good songs on here, and I'll gladly revisit them on the studio albums. It's a real shame this is the Cheap Trick album that made the list.

well recorded but i don't vibe with cheap trick

I might not have been in the right mood to listen to this record, but it really feels like an anecdotical live album from a dad rock band in the seventies. Nothing is particularly good or outstanding -- it's not really bad either, but I don't see the point of such an album here. Everyone seems pretty happy (band and crowd) in this record, but that was boring to listen to.

This album was a bit of a drag until I got to 'I want you to want me' which is such a banger! A great cover by Letters to Cleo features as the last scene/closing credits of '10 Things I Hate about you' (I'm embarrassed to say I only realised it was a cover today!) This track saved the album for me and I won't bother repeating how I feel about live albums I want you to want me I need you to need me I'd love you to love me I'm beggin' you to beg me

Most of these songs were jams or just generally uninteresting, other than "Surrender" which was a pretty hype moment on this live album. Didn't outweigh the low-lights, though. 2/5

Meh Need your love was quite heavy, and long. It was still sort of just, on. As is most of this besides the two songs everyone knows. And only Surrender is actually good.

No thanks

+1 star for being in Japan

2.5 not great quality, non hit songs were boring

Cheap arena rock 2

Although the live recordings and audience add to the overall spectacle, most tracks blended into one when looking back.

Too old and the music ain't at a great quality, altho the music is decent.

I get why this is on the list, but it's not really my thing at all. Marginally better than Kiss and Deep Purple, but not as memorable as 3-star AC/DC. The recording isn't particularly good, so I was wondering why they didn't include a studio album instead. But after reading the context around this, I get it. Overall, just straightforward Dad-rock IMO. I want You to Love Me and Surrender are good songs though, very reminiscent of that 70s show.

I can remember this album's spectacular popularity when it was released. I was, and I still am, perplexed by why it was so popular. I'm listening to it many years later, and it still seems to be a mediocre record.

Its okay but I'm not fond of live albums.

I think this one is for fans only, the hits are good but most of it just sounds sloppy and not in a cool Pavement way.

Fun, good time band. I just don't think it holds up over time. Just ok. Great drummer though

Live aber nicht gut.

Bit too messy for me

So much of this album feels designed to make no impression on me. And it's telling that the highlight was recognizing a bit the Beastie Boys sampled. "Surrender" is fine, I guess.

Not only does this come across as utterly typical 1970s rock, it all sounds like it's being played through a tin can.

This is some live dad rock band but I didn't like their music. Maybe I would if it were the studio versions instead.

I’d rather just listen to their recorded music.

This has to be one of the worst live albums of all time. Sound quality is atrocious and the production must have been done by an actual potato. The only redeeming thing is I Want You To Want Me. I love the song Surrender but it sucks hardcore on this shitty album. Glad to be moving on.

2.5/5. Meh, this is fine. It's like 70s pop rock, but leaning more towards the rock side. Not very good IMO.

Good butt rock, but butt rock nonetheless.

Bland old rock

What an absolutely bizarre inclusion for this list. I understand the importance of featuring a diverse range of artists from different cultures or spotlighting lesser-known artists that have been lost to time. But Cheap Trick?? And not just that, LIVE Cheap Trick? It's even more surprising considering the list is periodically revised, making room for new additions and removing previous entries. Yet somehow, this record maintains its place. Are one of the members on the 1001 council?

A good live album.

Definitely some great songs in here and was definitely a fun listen. However, I don't understand why they chose a live album for this list?

Cheap Trick has a place in history, just not mine.

too much crowd noise. Still not bad 2 stars

Why are these ok live albums on this list. This one isn't even particularly good

Algunas canciones cásicas, pero no me encantan.

There are two notable songs, both worse versions of their studio album counterparts.

Not really feeling this one. The recording isn't great and it is a little sloppy. The songs I did know sounded better in the studio (maybe besides I Want You To Want Me). Fun Fact: the line "This next one is the first song on our new album" was sampled in the Beastie Boys song Jimmy James. 2.5

Never been a big fan, though they are a decent example of the genre. "I want" is a good track but the others are mediocre. To be honest can only give it a high 2.

This is similar enough to the sort of music I like for me to have enjoyed this more. Maybe, because it’s a live album and I don’t know any of the songs it loses something on me, but nothing grabbed as different enough about them to make me want to look them up. A mid/high 2 as it’s kind of my thing, it’s done well enough, but not in the same league as the bands I listen to

Ehh...

Fun stuff! Kinda blend together at a certain point. The hits hit hard, especially I want you to want me. Pretty pop-rock standard.

stopped at song 3, not my jam

Otros discos editados en 1978: debuts de Dire Straits, Police, Devo y Siouxsie and the banshees, así como Paralell Lines, Some Girls, This year´s model, Darkness on the Edge of Town, Incantations o Grease.

I’ll take a fairly hard pass on this. What did these guys do to warrant getting screamed at as if they were the Beatles? And did they actually write a song about it being the end of the show, asking if the audience wants to hear one more? Jeez.

Live albums…I got no love for them. I gave Thin Lizzy a 3 and enjoyed it more. So I’m giving this a 2 and will prob never revisit. Just give me their studio recordings which I enjoy. Bye. 2.25/5

Cant actually remember but remember it being good 😂

There aren't many live albums I like. This one is mediocre for me. The first few tracks aren't done well. "Need Your Love" sounds better than the previous tracks. The songs that follow are what makes this album better.

I wannnnnnted to lovvvve this. I neeeededdddd to lovvvve this. But I just didn't lovvvve this

Okay, wow, this was really bland. I don’t feel like this live performance holds up at all. I understand that maybe it was big back in the day, especially with it being filmed in Japan, but I just don’t find anything special about it. It’s extremely boring, and I’d call it microwaved hard rock.

I find it funny that japan hosted an American band like cheap trick so soon after ww2 and all that happened in that. Pretty meh album though.

not my style

I can only imagine the live element of this played extremely well in person. I'm sure a video of the concert works great too, but the crowd noise and sound just kills this album for me.

To be fair, I do really like Surrender, but not enough to save the rest of the album

Live albums are usually only good if you are already a fan. This is the perfect example of that. The two guys are fun, the rest of this is a guitar wankfest.

High expectations for some reason Meh honestly probably deserves a 2 but I want to give it a 3. It’s good but just kinda just exactly 70s classic rock, which I like but this stuff is no revelation. I don’t know how much I’ll come back to other than Surrender surender

Well, I thought I liked them! On this album, the two stand-outs are the ones that get the most air time, I want you to want me and surrender. Other than that, it's just okay. And I looked at some of their other albums ... guess it's just not for me.

There’s a lot to be said about the limitations of studio recordings. My limited knowledge on this band’s reputation indicates that people feel like their studio albums don’t fully showcase their abilities. It’s easy to see how this can fertilize the soil for the idea mythos of a live album to grow. As far as I’m conserned, this sadly isn’t a very good listening experience. 1.8

>The next song is called "Surrender" >Japanese screams get cut off Kinda the only moment worth mentioning. Didn't feel the energy

I mean… it’s a live album. What do you expect? At least I know where that shitty radio version of “I want you to want me” came from

The 3 main hits are fine but I’d rather just listen to the main songs if I cared. Idc.

boring and long as fuck.

It's not bad, and surrender is a great song, but I don't understand what's so great about this live album. I'd much rather just listen to the better recorded studio versions. 2.5

Livelevy, blääh. Rocklevy, blääh. No kuunnellaan miten Japanin keikka on sujunut, mutta ennakkoon en odota tältä levyltä suuruuksia. Livelevyt eivät kuulu henkilökohtaiksi suosikeiksi. Keikat livenä ja levyt loppuunhiottuina studioversioina. Vaikka tuolta pari tuttua biisiä löytyi, niin kokonaisuutena aika blääh. Ei vaan livelevyt uppoa, edes pakottamalla.

Meh, okay

Good band. Good songs. Everything I hate about live recordings.

About want(& desire)/potential unrequited love Hard rock, Power pop Enjoyable but meh

Sometimes I’m doubtful these albums must be listened to before death lol It’s nothing special it’s just like every other fkin live album. Why must I listen WHY

It is very obvious that recoding technology has come a long way. I love Cheap Trick but this live recording is hard to listen to in my opinion.

Kaikin puolin kuunneltava muttei tarjoa mitään erikoista jonka takia ansaitsee paikkansa tällä listalla minun papereissa.

My parents went to high school with the guys from cheap trick. While they were married with two kids when this album came out, Cheap Trick was living the rock and roll life style in Japan. This album is a muddy mess. The mix is pretty terrible, the crowd is too loud and the instruments sound like they are being played with cotton balls in the speakers. No more live albums.

Not for me.

Mainstream late 70s glam rock. Nothing special really

Two live albums in a row. Ooof.

that one song.

Live album, old rock. I know one track, rest is decent.

Back goes down easy, as I suppose is traditional. But this is a live recording that packs almost no punch for this one.

Good night daarentegen is gewoon dom. FAVO: I want you to want me, surrender

Um show de pop empolgado, mas datado.

I've never been a fan of Cheap Trick, and live albums are very hit and miss. This album was better than I was expecting, but then again I was expecting a 1/5. In fairness, I'd say that it's between a 2 and a 3, but there's not enough quality here to push it up to a 3 for me.

This would be a 1 but I Want You To Want Me exists to it's a 2.

Fairly generic 70s rock

Just don't see it- nothing special live album of a reasonably middle of the road rock band.

It might actually be better than my 2, but it’s a live session, and that always muddies my listening experience

This is not good. Although the history of how the record label was forced to release the album in the US, which is how we even know these songs, is interesting.

This album only makes this list because of this recording of I Want You to Want Me and Surrender.

fun . much more enjoyable and familair than I expected. because I thought I woudl compeltely hateit. but it felt like caracature rock for Japan to thrash out and headbang to... who is to say? belong? no idea. Love? not especialy. and I in a bad mood now form all this mediocrity and obscuranus on this list today? yes.

Mid west America in the 70's, spawned a lot of good stuff, Wayne's World, Freaks and Geeks, Kiss and Rick Neilsen and the boys in Cheap Trick. What a strange tale this is, completely stiffing in the US, but their singles getting picked up by Japanese youth, for whom these records had something to say. I don't want to spend too long thinking about that, you've just got to let it happen. I found the album that has the original version of I Want You to Want Me in a cruddy market about ten years ago and the difference between that version and the live version is astounding, which again makes me wonder what those Japanese kiddies...no stop don't think about it. Another double live album from the seventies, I'd be pulling the chain of the terminally ill if I said here put this on before you cark it, it is pretty mediocre across the board, Bun E always had a lung buster in his chops as to be frank he didn't have a lot to do. What leaps out of this are the moments Rick has something to say. All great tunes demand and sustain covers and Dwight Yoakam's cover of I Want You to Want Me stands testament to the brilliance of the song. Surrender speaks to all the disillusioned and scared, great shift to the chorus this is a song with a dynamic that was made to be played in front of an adoring crowd. Rick goes on to pen a couple more classics, in particular his homage to While My Guitar Gently Weeps, the brilliant If You Want My Love You Got It. But this curio? Not worthy of death bed experience.

I'm a fan of live albums. The 1st half of this album is ok mid-70's rock. The last 1/4 was really good, especially Surrender.

Eipä tuo maailmaa mullistanut. Ihan hyvää rokkii 2/5

Wow I’m surprised this record gained the popularity it did in the late 70s. It’s just boring and stagnant. I typically look for live shows to have a ton of energy. This is just coked-out nonsense.

Can’t say this one grabbed me. Seemed run of the mill stadium rock.

I quite like Cheap Trick but never been a big fan of live albums.

Meh. I'm not a fan of live albums at the best of times, but give me a live album of a band i know nothing about and my interest wanes fairly quickly.

Maybe I had to be a teenager in the 80s to love this

A sloppy sounding mess. It’s why I usually don’t like live albums.

Whoops messed up and put this review under Nebraska. Here’s one for Nebraska: I like the folkier side of the boss- pretty cool when an artist can do a whole album with mostly just guitar and voice. Didn’t love all the tunes on here though. Atlantic City is a good song. A lot of these seem like old country songs. Pretty cool that he released an album of acoustic demos during the height of his popularity and that he was writing and recording songs for born in the USA this way at the same time. Would be interesting to hear. 3?

I felt nothing listening to this.

For me to listen to a live album, there has to be something that makes it special ( a la S&M). I’m sure it was fun to be there but I don’t know what’s special about it.

Pues bien rock setentero. Animoso (LNB)

I really wanted to love this album when I was a teenager, on the 80s but I did not. I really wanted to love it 40 yrs later but alas, I still did not. Live albums are just NOT my thing and I don’t understand why live albums are on a list like this. Seeing a band live is amazing. Feeling the energy of the crowd, seeing your favorite musician expertly play their instrument right before your eyes, front man to crowd banter. It’s all so fucking good…it does NOT transfer to a live album, like even a little. Sorry, it just doesn’t.

I haven't heard much of Cheap Trick's non-live stuff, other than their biggest hits, so I went in with a pretty clean slate. I'm not sure why this is supposed to be groundbreaking, as some other live records are stunning in comparison (see: Johnny Cash). It was fine but just that. Vocals were a little messy. Then again, I haven't heard these songs recorded, so uh...it's possible it's supposed to sound messy? Hm. Thought of the day.

Badly recorded and mixed, and the song writing is pretty dull too. Sounds like a lot of the screaming girls has been deliberately added on in post.

I like I want you to love my

I'm still not sure live albums should be in the book. If they are, I suppose this is one of the most famous and important but, for me, that's another argument against its inclusion. As an album, it is sloppy and messy, with only a couple of good songs. The band are clearly having a whale of a time, as are the audience, but it just makes me want to go to a show (probably not Cheap Trick tho!)

Some hits here and there, but I just don't get how this could be one of the best albums of all time.

Live album is cheating

The audio quality is horrible and makes the songs very hard to listen to. Other than that it just didn’t interest me and I found myself wanting to skip a lot of the time.

This was their big breakthrough, but times have changed, and this just doesn't hold the same appeal it may have had once upon a time.

I'm not a fan of live albums, and this is no exception. I've heard this recommended plenty of times, but I just couldn't get over the fact that the recording wasn't always great and the crowd just served to distract from the music rather than enhance it. I will admit that by the time I Want You to Want Me came around I was singing along in my car

Helaas dus CT

Ik ben aan het bij-luisteren. Ai, ai, ai.

A little too AOR for me.

Absolutely and amazingly average album. Apparently, I'm not a fan of Chrap Trick, so their live recording from Japan doesn't really impress me that much. The vocalist was honestly unbearable to listen to, almost singlehandedly he made this album unlistenable. Fortunately, even though most of the riffs and motifs were lacking in anything interesting, some of the moment in the concert full of guitar solos, fast bass line and atmospheric drums were really cool. You could feel like you're one of the fans at Budokan for a moment, somewhere around the middle of the set. But anytime else, really underwhelming. Moving on.

Pretty cheesy and dull

Live hard rock album. Sounds muddy. Probably fun if you were there. Some very cheesy programming decisions on the first and last tracks. Mostly made me want to listen to Beastie Boys.

I like the part where they say “didn’t I didn’t I didn’t I see ya cryin” but I could do without the rest

In my opinion - other than I Want you to want me and Surrender…it’s about overrated…

Not into live albums

Not a fan of Cheap Trick, they have one good song, I don't care about a live performance.

extremely forgettable k-mart rock with a lot of cheering girls

This was an interesting album to listen to as a more formal introduction to Cheap Trick. I really didn't know much about them aside from a few hits like 'Surrender' and 'I Want You to Want Me'. This is definitely an energetic live album and it's cool to hear the reaction they're getting from the crowd. That being said, I could personally just listen to the few hits on this one and leave the rest. It's cool to hear 'Surrender' played for an arena of super fans the week it was released. I don't think I'll be coming back to this one again. Not bad by any means, just not as impactful for me. It mostly just made me want to listen to another live album, like 'Stand In The Fire' by Warren Zevon. Standout Tracks: Hello There, Come On Come On, I Want You to Want Me, Surrender

Það eina sem heldur þessari plötu uppi er I want you to want me.

Probably a great show but there is really no point to this live album. I like Cheap Trick (or at least the hits) but the sound quality on here was pretty bad and all the crowd participation was just annoying for me as someone who is not in the crowd.

I didn't like it

Not a big fan of live albums. This is no different, nothing out of the ordinary or special on here. I’ll give it a 2 with no playlist adds. I’d rather add the non live versions if they pop up later.

Live albums suck, why do they even exist? I may like it if it appears to expand the tracks and give the audience/listeners a new experience with it, but they did not. These tracks are just the louder version of their studio counterparts, and apparently, critics liked it because their "energy" is apparent here. In other words, their studio songs probably suck. Also, while it has some decent, headbanging moments, the sound as a whole is still that annoying, generic, glam rock nonsense. Can't believe it's preserved at the Library of Congress. Some say that they pioneered hard rock and maybe power pop. Which is wrong, Led Zeppelin introduced hard rock to the world around a decade ago, power pop is associated with '60s acts such as The Who, while glam rock is seen as a fruit of some early '70s art rock acts such as David Bowie. Apparently, what they did pioneer are live albums, and like I said, live albums suck.

The American Status Quo

I only know like 3 Cheap Trick songs and I'm not a big fan. My perception of Cheap Trick was bs 70s pop rock. I listen to a ton of 70s rock and this band never came up on my to do list, so I didn't think it would enlighten me too get to know them. To make the best of this, I grabbed a can of beer and a joint and set out to my yard to listen to this album under the stars. I was surprised by the exuberance of this band and for the first couple of songs I had some hope. But that feeling waned as it just went downhill from there. They had me in the groove for Need Your Love until I noticed that it wasn't ending. I'm tired of I Want You To Want Me. That song has always annoyed me. I didn't skip it, but I did go inside to get another beer. I came back to Surrender, which is a song I do like, and Goodnight was interesting. So... this album really wasn't horrible, but then the Clock Strikes Ten and wtf is this? It should have ended at Goodnight, this was burning my ears. Really closed this on a bad note for me and overall I'm not impressed.

A live album by what appears to be a radio-friendly rock band. To break that down a little: the songs sound like absolutely uninspired, dime-a-dozen AOR. No particularly memorable hooks and not that much technical prowess either. I never really got the appeal of live albums either. Maybe it got cut out of the mix, but there doesn't seem to be much crowd interaction going on. That means the only thing the live-ness adds to the album is worse sound quality and some cheering to break up the track flow. It wasn't horrible, but I could have done without this one.

I get why they included this album, even though it's a live album. It's their breakthrough album and was a massive hit. There are a couple of good songs on here, but as with many other live albums a lot of the songs are expanded upon and drawn out. Which isn't necessarily a good thing if this is your introduction to the band. The Fats Domino cover is really not for me. Cheap Trick are competent, but often uninspired hard rock. They aren't exceptional but they are better than many others in the rock genre that were big at the time and that was also included in this book. If that says anything at all.

Really hits the middle of that road...

Great chemistry and performances. Songs are just okay though. Would see live, they put on a good show

Good vibe. Would see live. However didn't tick a the boxes personally

Period piece - weird acoustic quality - a couple of interesting songs but mostly completely forgettable

2.5 This was pretty good. There were definitely high points on this but I feel like it’s too early in their career to have the real heavy hitters on here. There were times especially near the end that I was getting major Queen vibes but it just never quite got there for me. I’ll probably come back to a few of these songs but a lot of the middle stuff isn’t doing it for me. Favorites: Big Eyes, Need Your Love, I Want You to Want Me, Surrender

I believe that for a live album to be good it has to be iconic or a performance to remember (or both) but this is not that, I mean, it’s not bad and the audience clearly likes it but I don’t know, it’s quite a generic rendition. I went in to investigate further about why would this be included on the list and found that it actually should be called live at Osaka… and that it sold a ton shit of copies… well I really like “quiero qué me quieras” and this list is big into including records solely for one song so I guess that’s it. “Yo te vi yo te vi yo te vi yo te viiii lloraaaaandooo!”

Not a cheap trick fan I guess..

I'm beginning to think that there isn't a place for live albums on this list (bar a couple of exceptional exceptions to the rule).

I liked the lesser known songs better, maybe some inspiration for Motley Crue and the like. Not that excited about dank lame-rock ‘I want you to want me’, but Surrender is ok.

I don't mind Cheap Trick; they have some good tunes, and a couple of them are on here. But what's this live album doing on the list? The sound quality isn't great, it's not wall-to-wall bangers and the concert itself doesn't seem particularly legendary. The audience seem to enjoy it, though.

I’m sure this was fun to see live but unfortunately it just doesn’t translate. Boring and repetitive.

I quite like some of these songs but: 1. Fuck live albums. If you weren’t there, tough. Get over it. 2. It sounds like shit

I have heard of Cheap Trick - probably from Guitar Hero 2? but I'm pretty sure that's it. Never heard anything else they have done. This is a live album so a bit of a different vibe, but yeah, not sure what else to add. The music itself feels a bit dated. Not the worst, but I'm pretty sure if I was alive at the time, Cheap Trick wouldn't have been my first pick. Stand out tracks: Surrender, I Want You to Want Me.

Meh. Led Zeppeline lite

I've always heard that this is a definitive live album so my expectations were high. After listening to I wonder wtf the hype was about. This was bland and I've heard so many better live albums. 2.5/5

Really seemed quite generic and indistinct. Felt like I had heard some of it before, but maybe I was confusing each track with ones earlier in the set.

FAV TRACKS: SURRENDER (the only track i remotely enjoyed in a sea of filler tracks) This album is literally just rock but stripped down to it's most basic components. It becomes boring after some time and you are practically waiting for it to end. I see the appeal in such albums, but personally don't really enjoy it. The basic talent is there, the energy is there, the enthusiasm is there but yet there isn't much diversity between songs. 4/10 😴😴

alltid skeptisk til live album

It's quite a weird experience to listen to an album where the fans are screaming in adulation for a band they clearly love and I'm sat there wondering what all the fuss is about. The music itself; on the plus side they have plenty of energy. On the downside; it's all a bit samey. It's just bland generic riff rock to these ears. Maybe you had to be there.

Can't say that I found this enthralling, inoffensive is probably about as kind as I can be.

Great guitar riffs, but not sure why this particular live album is on the 1001 list.

I wanted to like this album more than I did. Cheap Trick is a very hit-or-miss band for me, and really, their live albums are the only ones I've even given a second thought to (I truly dislike their studio recordings; such a different energy). The set played Nippon Budokan was a little too jarring for me. Not bad, but not my thing.

I mean, it's pretty disappointing. I already liked I Want You To Want Me and Surrender. But I can't stand love albums as a general rule and this is no exception. Again, sure it's great being there, bit it just translates to muddy generic noise on the release. The start is very dull. I only perked up when they did a bit of T Rex. There are good songs, as above, but it just made me long for a studio versions.

Not my fav

Oof. I like Cheap Trick, but the live version just felt like noise for the most part. I think this makes me old. Might be cooler on vinyl, idk.

live albums are for fans of the band. they're very tight, but what does that matter if they just play cheesy shit?

Nothing against Cheap Trick, but I prefer the studio versions of these songs...by far.

cheap trick are an average band and one i’m not overly excited about. it makes sense that the version of “i want you to want me” that everyone knows is this live version! there’s magic there, even if the song has become old for me. really, this is a passable live album and my ears did not bleed. but meh also—yikes, this sound production is awful! for being such a well known album, you’d think the quality would be better, or that the album was from before 1950, not 1978!

I'd normally avoid live albums, and this would have been no exception. It was just boring.

Points deducted for being a live album, I feel like it’s always an annoying negative and would just rather listen to the studio version of these songs.

Cheap Trick has catchy songs that I don't like, maybe because they're too repetitive or simple usually

Only OK I'd say

Band is ok, but live album not.

Not bad, but not something that I feel drawn to. Sounds like a lesser Thin Lizzy to me. Decently captures the feel of a live rock show though, and some good moments elevate this. Need Your Love is a highlight.

I'm about 40 minutes away from Rockford, Illinois right now so I have to be careful about what I say or the Cheap Trick assassins will come for me. This is not a good album. It isn't recorded well, but it is a live album from 1978 so that is forgivable. The music isn't my thing either. But given that this album was the launching point for their popularity in the United States and formative to the hard rock genre in the US as well I understand its place on this list. But my rating is lowered because I hate live albums. "I Want You to Want Me" and "Surrender" are all time classic songs, but I still prefer the album versions.

I find Cheap Trick’s songs to be generic rock filler. Nothing exciting. I Wany You To Want Me is memorable. The rest. Meh.

?? pourquoi un live ? pourquoi ce live ?

live and not even that good.. come on!

This was alright. Don’t remember hearing any crowd noise. Strange for a live record

I owned the Bob Dylan at Budokan Album and there weren't thousands of screaming teenage girls on that one. This could have been worse. One of the good things about live LPs, I reckon, is that they narrow the gap between good and bad bands. And Cheap Trick sounds like a pretty good live band.

Not a particularly good recording. Wasn’t enthralled by the generic rock but it’s clear they are enjoying themselves with good positive vibes. Songs got a bit better towards the end.

I was never a huge Cheap Trick fan - they’re fine but there are better bands from that genre. Also I’m not a big fan of live albums! So this was never likely to be a big hit for me. It’s ok but nothing special

Without question, this vocal affect sounds beyond stupid in 2022. Not that many vocal affects today aren't beyond stupid, they just don't *sound* it yet. Crucial difference, that. How to describe said vocals? I dunno. Like Rod Stewart had sex with someone much less talented? Though that happened. Lots of times. And to my knowledge they didn't form Cheap Trick. Whatever. Vocals aside, they batter the drums good and proper, do the old up and down movement on the guitar nice and aggresive, finger the neck when they're feeling frisky, and keep things slick and quick. Except when they don't. Which is a mistake. Eight minutes and forty-six seconds is not territory this kind of band should step foot in. Fuck knows what they're yowling about. Probably abandonment. "Dad, where are you?" "Rod, why don't you love me?" Etc.

OK, it's a piece of history, but is it good music with lasting effect?

This is one of the worst live albums I’ve heard. Some classic songs but I’m really not sure why this is on the list.

Another live album for the list. Generally with live albums it's a case of "You had to be there" and this one is no exception. Fairly weak power pop and teen screams. It sounds like a weeb's dream. Best Tracks: Come On, Come On; I Want You To Want Me; Surrender

I'm not a huge fan of live albums. I generally prefer listening to studio versions of things. However this did lead to me to check out more Cheap Trick and I did find some songs I liked such as "I want you to want me" and "Surrender". The latter of which I remember hearing on BBC Radio 2 back in the day but not remember the name of or who did it.

i want you to want me is the only one i enjoyed unfortunately. it wasn't bad! just wasn't special IMO

Not my vibe

Rock. Ikke god lyd. Live

60’er guitarpop/rock, kraftfuldt, live-optræden

It's not... bad. It's just not for me.

Some cracker songs that sound like they were recorded from inside a drawer.

bit beige this one, didn't really do too much but the girls were screaming like crazy in between songs

Not for me.

girls at the concert seemed to like them

Not a fan of live albums generally. Generally enjoyable track list with a few standouts, but nothing groundbreaking…

Frat-rock… IWYTWM is great tho…

For me, Cheap Trick are one of those bands that you've heard of, without really knowing why. I recall "The Flame" catching my attention in the late '80s, but I wouldn't be able to name another of their tracks. So, I was keen to find out what their earlier work sounded like, but the experience was quite disappointing. The kindest thing to say was that it sounded like the crowd present at this live gig were enjoying themselves a great deal. As for me, I've heard better performances from pub bands in Camden or at one of the smaller stages at Glastonbury. Perhaps the quality of the recording played a part, but most of the tracks were basic, formulaic and unimaginative, with the exception of "Surrender" and "I Want You To Want Me". I'd hoped for more.

Not a cheap trick fan

Cheap trick. Good rocker but soundtrack played in background without compelling me to listen attentively. Meh

No me atrapó nada.

I'll go 2.5 stars.

Love album set in Japan. Some of the songs were good but live albums just aren’t as easy to listen to. Doesn’t hit the mark for me. 4.7/10

Live album, boring

Not too bothered

Sounds too fuzzy, messy and “live” to really enjoy it.

Bit too whimsical for me

Only a few redeeming enjoyable moments saved this from a 1/5

Starts terribly - need your love is great then gets a little better - drums on clock strikes ten alone worth an extra star but it was sailing close to one star

Starts terribly - need your love is great then gets a little better - drums on clock strikes ten alone worth an extra star but can’t give it three

hit heavy

I have a problem with live albums of Bands I don't know. If I don't know the source material I'm rarely moved. As in this case.

You already know I don't want to listen to this album and Apple music made it even easier by not having it in their album list. The only Cheap Trick I see is this list trying to make me listen to another live album.

I couldn't get over the distracting fans in-between songs. Why would a live album be on this list??

Man, their biggest hits strike me as so cloying. A fine pop-rock live record otherwise.

It's just alright.

Takes a while to warm up. Kinda boring if I’m honest. I guess this was up against disco and soft rock making it more influential as “hard” but it’s just kinda meh to me. One or two good tracks doesn’t make this a great album for me.

Good live album.

I don't really enjoy live albums by bands that I love, so this didn't stand a chance.

Fuuuuck offffff Absolutely soulless "rock" The imagine dragons of the 70s

I think this list has more non-Japanese bands playing live in Japan then it does Japanese bands in general. Anyways, this is slush except for the one song everyone knows, which is degraded by being next to all the similar sounding bad tracks. It's so deeply empty and soulless, the entire thing is sung in this resigned tone that results in even the band sounding bored. The only positive I'll say is that the audience at the Budokan are almost a character into themselves. You can tell they're so deeply into it, the cheers at the end of the songs are immense. This list just fundamentally irritates me that at the height of City Pop THIS is one of the only things here that was recorded in Japan.
