Reviews (page 9 of 13)

The vibe reminds me a little of David Bowie, maybe a little more punk. Fun listen.

Not clear what the hard on is for this band I've never heard of. I admit it sounds more timeless than a lot of the 1970s wankery this list has exposed me to, but the music wasn't ultimately all that compelling despite multiple listens. I probably liked 'Venus' the most but that's largely based on the nostalgia of a friend putting it on a mix CD 20+ years ago. Otherwise not sure I'll remember this a week from now.

really not memorable.

Ummm I dont even really remember this, however I know that the vibes were really cool. Im not a punk girlie (at least not the chill 70's punk) so I didn't really find it THAT good, but it was chill background noise.

An okay album, very 70s rock but nothing stood out to me. Like it's an easy listen, but nothing too special

yahoooo! yippeeeee! (I fear my music taste is not discerning nor critical)

the songs are sooo long

This is one of those albums that ticks all the boxes for something I love. But I struggle to love it. I feel the same about a lot of the new wave stuff, maybe I just prefer post punk

Bra grejer. Mycket velvet underground!

- Gøyale gitarsoloer - Marquee Moon er banger som varer og varer - Bra, men litt wanky og gammelt uten retro

Totally enjoyable listen, it just felt very down-the-middle for me. I can’t say too much negatively about the sound, just nothing that hooked me too much. Best Track: Marquee Moon

Сложно сказать чем мне запомнился мне этот альбом, мне понравились переходы между основными партиями

Liked some of the slower songs, could have done with a bit more light and shade. I found the vocals slightly annoying

I liked the disjointed bridges and drum syncopation.

It was pretty all right background music. I kind of forgot ai was listening to it, but that's better than dreading the next song ¯\_( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)_/¯

Achei bem produzido, rock básico, mas não é bem meu estilo

More like Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd than pennywise or nofx

I didn't care much for the vocals and think they did not interact well with the music. I really like the guitar riffs, especially in "Marquee Moon". I really like how warm and bright it sounds. It does remind me a little bit of some prog-rocky things such as some of Mike Oldfield's stuff.

It’s a very melody heavy soundtrack. I’m on the first song rn and god THE GUITAR. it’s awesome i love the little solos it sounds good. The singer has quite a unique voice and it reminds me of the singer from talking heads— it gives early ‘The Killers’ vibes imo like early as in hot flush. Venus is ok i don’t how the singer doesn’t have thaaat much range but the instrumental is pretty good! also why is it about drugs how many albums about drugs will i have to listen too before spotify thinks im a heroin addict?? Friction has a GREAT start the guitar once again takes the spotlight in all my reviews haha. Ok i can’t stop talking about it but the riffs toooo it’s awesome. Friction is also good !! but guys why does the lead vocal have no range like it’s not even singing some times just saying it with some twang . Marquee Moon!! the song of the album!! The little melody on the guitar it’s awesome especially in the bridge ohhh my lord . Im a fan of the chorus it’s very climactic and YES the singer did something slightly different. Still the music stands out more than the singer. UH-UH (crying) The intro to elevation has me ascending it sounds like a heart beat or just something from the intro to a medical drama. STOP IS THAT A TAMBOURINE??? i’ve never heard a tambourine in a song where it wasn’t the spotlight i like that that’s new!! Guiding lights gives Mr brightside vibes from the start of the track but stops once the singer joins in. Stop guys I don’t mean to bash the singer so much genuinely it’s just my enjoyment in the music and the singer is polar. PLEASE this could be such a good song but i can’t get on with the singer i feel bad. Cause like the music at the end of guiding lights goes up a few octaves BUT HE DOESNT please dude. Prove it is such a sweet little jam and i love the intro like all the other songs and the outro. I think it might be my favourite of the track it’s so layered and pretty in the best way possible. God these songs are so long i’ve just realised Torn curtain is 7 minutes long. The bridge is SO GOOD. rest of the song was alright. Ok so my opinions are sighh split. The actual instrument and musical part o the tracks? AWESOME the intricate guitar work is so pretty and it’s incredibly well layered and good mix between jazz and the punk rock this eras from. I’ve now learnt this song inspired the talking heads which makes a lot of sense. If it wasn’t for the vocals i think i’d adore this album but the vocalist just isn’t for me. He feels flat and thin and strangled against the pretty instruments and it creates a contrast that’s too harsh for me to appreciate. He’s pretty monotone and just doesn’t fit with me he reminds me of the band mcaffery, i don’t listen to them as much anymore but liked when i was like 13. Maybe if you’d shown this to me when i was 13 i would’ve liked it more but yeah. pretty songs and well layered and amazing guitarists but the vocals are not my favourite. It’s painful how much potential it had but the singer is incredibly punk and maybe that isn’t for me. Best tracks: Prove it, Elevation Worst track: Torn curtain

Sympa 3.5

Not so bad

Enjoyed this.

Not bad just not my vibe

Didn’t get a chance to listen to it extensively, but the angular guitars and vocal style are sonically not for me. I know it’s a very influential album (can definitely hear some Elastica there), but a lot of it kinda sounded like noodling on a guitar on the edge of being about to stumble on a killer riff.

cool, but not extraordinary didnt enjoy the singers voice too much

Not for me

Liked the sound nothing too memorable about it

Very good surprise

As of listening to this, I'm really enjoying it. He vocal performance for the main singer is unique, but fits the overall pink aesthetic it's going for. And it achieves that very well. It has really heavy guitar riffs, feeling like they have weight to them and the drums work simultaneously with them

7/10 - частично слушал(вроде как)

Not my typical genre but excellent in said genre, very vibey kinda sexy in a confused way. Very long songs which long musical interludes which I also liked overall probably a three

Above average. 6 "I Don't Know What Happened There Jander"s out of 10 Super Glentendos

No private session used for Spotify. I have tried to listen to this album before and I am familiar with some of the songs on it, but have an issue with the singer's voice. I tried to get past that and focus on the music, which was good, rocking but not bland straight forward mindless rock, there was some tightness that I appreciated.

Great ban cohesion, 3.5/5

Decent. Not heavy enough

Guitar is peak on every song, no exceptions. My personal favourite is Venus, but the intro to friction is pretty cool too. Enjoyable album although I think the first half was better than the second. Marquee moon did not have to be 10 minutes long but good nonetheless.

When to listen: Want to seem CBGB cool

I knew the title track, and that's the obvious standout, although possibly just through recognition. The rest of the album is ok but didn't blow me away. May change this on a future listen, but for now a strong 3.

Not bad idk nothing stuck except the 10 min song

Tried this before but wasn't impressed. Let's see how it holds up this time. Quite nice, liked the guitarwork in most songs. But still not impressed, might grow on me, I'll keep it in rotation

I liked it. Another decent debut album. Favorite songs: Friction, Marquee Moon, Prove It

-from first listen i like the energy it reminds me of stranger things rn (esp see no evil)

Never heard of these guys, but this was pretty good. Kind of like psychedelic rock, but with a bit of a harder edge to it. Not quite good enough to get to a 4 though.

Swagger without the character of mick jagger. 3/5

Not bad rock album Fave track: See no evil

You can definitely hear the influence this had on a lot of bands

This album would be an easy 4/5 from me....if it wasn't for the mindnumbingly boring title track that has absolutely no reason being 10 minutes long!! Television's 'Marquee Moon' has all the makings of what I really like in an album; garagey rawness, punky punchiness and simple yet vague lyrics; and the first three songs, 'See No Evil', 'Venus' and 'Friction', are all great tunes that are rightfully heralded as among the best of the New York punk scene of the late-70s. But the title track kills the enjoyment of the entire album for me. 'Marquee Moon' has no business being 10 minutes long when half of it is uninspired f***ing around on the guitar. This song could've been a good 4-minute tune, much in the same vein as the rest of the album, but because they just had to extend the guitar part far longer than necessary, it kills the entire mood of the album, to the point where I no longer care for the rest of it. Also, Tom Verlaine's voice gets pretty grating before too long. He sounds like both Mick Jagger (The Rolling Stones) and Ian Astbury (The Cult) in places, but without having the skill or charisma of either. This would've been an easy 4 out of 5 for me, but the title track ruins it completely. I feel bad for saying this given how influential this album is to the development of alternative rock, but it's a classic case of just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Best songs: See No Evil, Venus, Friction

Tätä on joskus tullut yritettyä kuunnella.

It was a total vibe. Although i didn't have one song to especially stick out, i really enjoyed listening to this album.

Kind of, but rock is not my genre

Right off the bat, I felt like a divorced dad when I started listening to the album. I was not expecting a 10 minute song, which I thought I was going to hate. Besides that, I really enjoyed the experience. My favorite songs were Marquee Moon and Friction (thought this one was funny). Surprisingly, Friction was the song that felt closest to something I would actually put on my personal playlists and I still might.

Not bad

Surprised me as I didn’t think I would like it - going to recommend to my son

Early Punk - with very Rock N' Roll adjacent instrumentals, and vocals that do give Stones a bit. The earlier half suffers from the classic Punk issue of repetitiveness and weird structure that tends to not go anywhere - as in, it starts building up, but there's barely any payoff (in the form of a good chorus or whatnot). The run between between Guiding Light and Torn Curtain is, for me, the highlight of the album though - those last three songs are actually more interesting and engaging than the rest.

Cars-esque (?) sound w/ Mick Jagger vocals. Can’t complain about that.

É bom até, mas não me agradou muito não

i haven’t listened but i will

It had some interesting musical choices, but other than that, it didn't blow me away to be honest.

music was good but i kinda hated the vocals

Neat. Love how unique all the guitar, bass and drum lines are. The more you listen, the more you notice. Faves: Venus, Friction, Guiding Light

A bit raw with whiny / slightly off key vocals but decent guitar.

I liked a lot of these songs, but the album as a whole didn't really shine.

pleasant surprise!

very decent album 🤌 rocky horror vibes

This is like a high 3, if not a 4. I didn't add it to my library, but maybe I should. I did text Ryan: "This album was kinda good. Not sure if it’s a 4/5, but it’s pretty good."

Not bad, I see why it’s so influential but I think it’s an album that benefits from multiple listens to fully appreciate. Maybe subsequent listens will increase the score but for me it was good, but not memorable

Some good songs some not so much

Didn't blow me away but the guitar in Marquee Moon stuck with me. Kind of cool.

Plucky.

Started like a temu Bowie but gradually morphed into post punky fun. Pretty decent.

מתחיל אלבום השנה. נגמר אלבום השינה

Strong example of eh.

meh 2.75/5

nice album! I found a new artist today. great!

Extremely unremarkable. Totally fine, but not going to be rushing back.

Old emo

One of those albums where the one hit comes on and I say, ah, this one hit.

It's so hard to get over the annoying scream-whine of a voice, but everything else, especially the beautiful tones of the guitar, is pretty cool.

Lead vocalist had a familia sound

Calling this punk is kind of crazy…. Maybe influential but not punk. I didn’t love it but I didn’t hate it.

Punk rock album which starts off particularly strong with "See No Evil". The title track, Marquee Moon, is the nucleus of the whole album, and while fine drags on a little bit too much for my liking. While the vocals are not particularly enjoyable, with the comical background sounds and the whine/drone from Verlaine, it is saved by lively guitar parts and relatively fun melodies. Chief example of this is "Venus" which is one of the stronger tracks on the album by the 'huh's. Solid album.

I like the guitar's swagger in Marquee Moon. Couple with his 70's vocal style...it works.

Suprisingly good album, will have to give it a re-listen later.

It sounded... Like the backbones of albums I would have enjoyed as a teenager. Some cool guitar riffs.

This was cool. The title track is a journey. Buckle up.

I enjoyed this. It seems obvious that The Strokes were influenced by this, but apparently they weren't. Regardless of what they say, it had to be indirect. Really good stuff.

"Marquee moon" is a fun song.

First time listen, nothing screaming out to me which suggests another listen would be required. It seems like it's just 'on' and not much else. Maybe the decades haven't been kind to it?

wasn't feeling this at first but i really enjoyed the last 3 songs. the rest were meh. 2.5 maybe ill give it a relisten someday

3/5. Fun energetic album that bogs down a bit towards the end. Didn't love the vocalist's voice, but liked the vibe.

This was an inconvenient album to drop on this particular day, for me. Television deserves more of my attention. Every time I've listened to Marquee Moon (which is maybe two or three times ever), I think to myself, "There's a lot to like here. I need to commit myself to this album and really get familiar with it to fully appreciate it." And then years pass without me listening to it again. Yesterday was not a day in which I had time to "get into" Marquee Moon. I put it on, but while doing other things. So, recognizing the ceiling might be higher, I'm gonna have to go with a ...

early punk, noting memorable

Hyvä levy, pitää kuunnella paremmalla ajalla uudestaan. 3/5.

Pretty solid. Not sure if it's worth a re-listen, but I enjoyed it. 3.5

Var nice det egentlig, tror jeg kommer til å sjekke det ut en gang til en gang kanskje

Fin musikk til kobb. Tidvis stilig. Festa seg ikke, men kunne hørt igjen

Just can't get on with his voice.

Never knew this existed. Interesting take on the rock sound of the time. Excellent guitar work.

Honestly, I don’t have much to say on this one. I listened to it first thing yesterday morning and I had to go back this morning to listen to a little bit of each song again, because I couldn’t remember much about them. It was fine, the music was straight forward, but I didn’t care for his voice.

There was no bullsh*t with this album. A few guys playing instruments and another singing vocals; no crazy effects or conflicting styles. Just plain old music.

Proto-punk gave off Bowie/Lou vibes. Fine but not particularly memorable.

*See No Evil: this is a vibe. it's punk and it sounds good for its age, really really like it Venus: the guitar parts have been pretty intricate on both songs, like starting to have a suggestion of math rock. they're definitely stealing the show. enjoyed this one too, it reminds me of some of Crack Cloud's stuff Friction: this track is a little less successful. the guitar work is still dope but the vocals + lyrics are a miss for me *Marquee Moon: 10.5 minute song, locking in. this sounds like half the post-punk coming out today. also you could tell me the instrumental break is from a King Gizzard song and I would believe you without hesitation. overstays its welcome a smidge but it's good Elevation: love the moodiness and the sad country song guitars in the verses but the chorus is cheeks genuinely. Guiding Light: Cameron Winter heard this song and said yep that's the one. it's not bad but it doesn't do that much. Prove It: I'm just having a hard time with his voice on a lot of these tracks. I like the songs but his vocal performance is dragging them down a bit. *Torn Curtain: funky guitar tone (complimentary). the chorus is great, the piano is giving it to me. reminds me of Pistolita a bit. not sure why this is the least listened track, it might be the best song on the album this was a cool one. even though some of the songs fell flat for me, I listen to so much modern music that clearly drew from this wellspring so it's right up my alley. the guitar work throughout is consistently super sick, it's always holding it down even on the songs I otherwise didn't feature. fun listen __ SCORE: 7/10 ADDED TO PLAYLIST: See No Evil, Marquee Moon, Torn Curtain

I suspect that this is the kind of album that works better for people who have enough technical knowledge of guitar playing to form opinions more nuanced than "this sounds cool". For me, a person who knows nothing and is going off vibes, this a perfectly cromulent album. If you told me it was your favorite album of all time I would fully support you, but unfortunately it's left me a little cold. Is it good? Deffo Do I like it? Thumb sideways Is it essential? Genuinely I don't know. I'm not getting a lot out of it, but many other people clearly do, so who am I to say no? Would I purchase it? Nope Will I ever listen to it again? Maybe! Probably worth a revisit and I might try another Television album in the future 2/1089

Too british for me

Fun overall

--See No Evil...nice opener --Venus...I feel like to be a true Television fan, you have to like Verlaine's voice. I don't --Friction...I like the bass groove here. Not a fan of Verlaine's voice in general but it works here. The guitars are doing fun stuff --Marquee Moon...I like the first two minutes. let's see how far I can get. some cool guitar stuff gets me through the next two minutes. Song could definitely end at the five minute mark but I guess we soloing now --Elevation...don't like the chorus much. Verlaine's "singing" gets in the way of the decent sounding verses --Guiding Light...nothing about this justifies it being five and a half minutes long --Prove It...I like the bass on this one. but it's just not a great song. also too long --Torn Curtain...I'm tired, boss

I've spent a lot of time with this album. It's interesting, important, and influential. But I don't really enjoy it.

Influential? Maybe. They're definitely not a HIT band. Some of the songs are boppy, but it's nothing to write home about and they don't sound like anything we haven't heard before. It's pretty predictable. My Rating: 3/5

It's enjoyable enough, but nothing I'll remember after a little bit and I'll probably not be returning to this album in the future. There's stuff I'd rather listen to and I'll probably completely forget about this one soon Standouts Marquee Moon 3/5

see no evil- 5 venus- 5 friction- 5 marquee moon- 5 or 6. it's good but does not need to be that long elevation-5 guiding light- 5 prove it- 5 torn curtain- 5

An important pioneering album in getting some lasting good out of the violent eruption of punk, this album (unlike works like Patti Smith's Horses) stands as a jangly artifact and not a timeless artwork.

Personally I like my post punk to be more garage and less jazz, but this is still a decent collection of songs. It’s avant garde punk for the masses. Some are too long, and his vocal style takes a bit of getting used to. It’s a hugely unique album, and Television have probably influenced every guitar band since. Despite being a little bit prog in places it’s enjoyable enough, and probably one of the better post punk bands around. A few more listens and I think you could get heavy into it, but at this moment in time I enjoyed more than I didn’t.

I felt this album was kinda boring. Nothing special jumped out at me

Was good! Probably one of my preferred punk album thus far! (If this is considered punk?) Wasn't my favorite, but it was a vibe. Some days I listen to the album a few times to make a better judgment, sometimes I cant stomach listening to it more than once. But I gave this one 3 rounds, and I didn't get tired of it (although I was doing other shit). 6.5/10 Favorite song: Marquee Moon

Early on in my listen, I wasn't really understanding why this album received so much acclaim and was deemed influential. But slowly I realized I wasn't really listening to a traditional punk rock album. This is more layered and melodic, featuring some lengthy tracks and solos à la progressive rock. The title track is probably the best example of what I'm trying to explain here. I don't think the remainder of the album quite reaches the high of the title track, but that's OK. The images of New York at night seep through the lyricism here.

It's ok, just ok. There's some good guitar riffs in places and some good driving bass lines at times. I'm down with the extended jams. I'm not 100% up on his singing, it's fine I guess. Guitar-wise, and overall sound-wise I like it, but I'm not blown away.

Better than I was expecting

Good vibes

Yes, ok I get why it is here deadbeats. No Tom V no Black Midi/Black Country/Geese et al. Like a b grade Velvets, for a band that didn't really do a lot they helped create a whole lot of other bands. Good guitar work, some really good drumming which belies its late seventies context and some damn fine songs. Friction, See No Evil are good, and would be well placed in a random playlist for a tootling road trip. The title track is smashing, another girl, another planet, oh sorry wrong band with one great song. But no, I don't mean to take the piss, this is a good listen. Like say the Beau Brummels, they will slowly fade from view when generations die off, but that's ok too.

New music to me. 1977 Punk Phish.

This really is one of those records that will always crop up on any 'greatest album ever' list - I get why, it is great, but I'm sure it's included out of habit these days. It's been bettered since it came out. I love the guitar sound but those slightly frantic-sounding vocals have always rankled a little and each track tends to ramble a bit. The influence it had on all that followed is clear for all to see, but it's time to move on, I reckon.

Off the cuff remark: not sure how I was introduced to Television many years ago but I always (largely misguidedly) had them down as a prog-rock band (not a compliment from me). I can hear bits of that but I love the stripped back production, for some reason reminding me in that sound of Joe Jackson, but perhaps just a kind of late 70s thing? It's not amazing but I enjoyed it far more than I expected to. Standout track: title track almost too proggy, but with some great riffage so forgiven. See No Evil and Venus are also good. Revisit?: Think I ought to

3 dark sides of the moon

Are we listening to the same album? Granted the guitar work is good, the song writing too. But the singer! He doesn’t hit the right pitch and then slurs his voice until it the pitch is right. Is it intentional? I doubt it. I file it under terrible singing skills.

Solidly mediocre.

friction

Har nok inspirert en del britiske 90-tallsband. Helt grei, ikke mer.

This was okay, but nothing that I feel I'm going to listen to again

Really grew on me as the album went along. I find the vocalist fine, but the guitars are excellent and really enhance the whole album. Favorite Song: Marquee Moon (there's a reason it's the album title, after all)

There were aspects of this album that I liked, and I can understand why its an influential album, but I didn't add any of it to my Playlist.

Early forerunners of the Strokes, 25 years later. Marquee Moon itself is a good song, but the others feel to me like more of the same post-punk rock that we've been getting ad nauseum from this list.

This album was fine. Not what I would consider a great post punk album, but some of the hooks on it are pretty catchy for sure! I didn't dislike it, but it didn't have a strong effect on me either. The title track, for me, was definitely the standout by a pretty large margin. Everything else was perfectly fine; not great but not bad either.

A great listen and a unique sound.

Decent 70s rock. As basic and forgettable as it gets, but not bad.

Not a bad album but not my favorite genre. I recognized one of the songs and I probably would give this one another listen.

There are elements I appreciate but I think it’ll require a few listens to sort out the hype. Not bad at all just didn’t pull me in quite like I expected.

Sounded a lot like a more rich version of midnight oil. Also had done very long songs but I did enjoy.

Had listened to the title song already and enjoyed it! Loveee the hook / bridge on marquee moon 3.5 stars, hits and misses

I recognized the title track, but the whole thing was good enough to listen to a second time.

molto simili ai Queen come stile, non mi dispiace

chill but evoking. molto astratto, libera interpretazione o anche nessuna interpretazione, ascoltabile senza troppo impegno. musicalmente molto bello. canzone preferita: Torn Curtain.

Interesante, pero no me emociona

Enjoyed this. Could see the influences it had elsewhere.

- Goede ochtend rock, iets te rustig. De terugkerende 'riff' van het nr. Marquee moon was zeer nice. - 0 nummers toegevoegd aan MMMM

the length of these songs surprised me bc wach song takes you in an adventure. the drumming is phenomenal and the fills and how he plays with the rest of the band is incredible. never heard of television before but pleasantly surprised by this album. fav songs: prove it, venus,

Instrumentation was phenomenal, well ahead of its time. Really enjoyed it except for the vocals

My rating of this album is an example of my tolerance increasing for musical genres and hitherto unknown bands and musicians as a result of this 1001 Albums App challenge. It's included so many intolerable titles that it's often a relief when the daily music is kind of alright, like Marquee Moon. Probably a bit better than alright. Do i hear echoes of the Rolling Stones? I particularly liked some of the instrumentals. Nearly a 4 but not quite as I'd need to listen to it again but alas, tomorrow is another day, another album.

not bad

Me ha sorprendido, suena bastante bien

I wsnt to listen again.

Not sold on the lead singer but this was a decent listen.

Weird but not too weird. I think I liked that 10+ minute song the best.

Solid work

From visuals alone from the album cover. Pre listen i’m imagining a ‘upbeat’ instrumentals and ‘oingo boingo’ vocals to best describe it. Now listening they are alt rock and the instrumentals are more set in that genre.

I like the vibe but struggle with the voice.

It was fine. I couldn't really get into it like I was hoping I would. I prefer other classic rock for sure. Not bad, but nothing to write home about either.

7.7/10 , Great stuff especially prove it , marquee Moon and torn Curtain

Slatki mi je ovaj album, par pjesama tu su mi baš drage, posebno Elevation koja mi se baš dosta vrtila. 3/5, 6.5/10

Marquee Moon (the song) alone makes this a good album. Nice listen with great melodies. 7/10 fav songs: Prove It & Torn Curtain

I think that I will call that interesting. Enjoyable but not too engaging. Most interesting: Venus and Marquee Moon (after 7 minutes, I realized it was still the same song).

I thought I'd love this based on the write up. I respect what they're doing and recognize the musical talent. But like prog rock, when the music veers into too many unconnected intricacies it feels like it's more enjoyable for the performer than the listener. See No Evil was my favorite. 2.5 rounded up.

Seriously it’s just noise. It’s not ‘groundbreaking’.

Mhhh, The Doors, Lou Reed esk. not my cuppa. Guitars were good.

Generic 70s Brit rock

Kind of worked for me. I don’t know enough about the context to take it into account, so my review is purely based on first impressions. There’s nothing particularly memorable about this album, nothing particularly original or inventive, but it’s pleasant enough to listen. I don’t like the singer’s voice, but the instrumentation is all right, with some good guitar work. I really liked the post-punk vibe of the first three tracks, and the title song Marquee Moon almost feels psychedelic at times, with the long dragged-out guitar line. The album gets a bit weaker after that though, but never really bad. The last song left me a good impression. It’s a 2,5* for me, neither good nor bad. At first I wanted to rate it a 2* for its lack of strong identity. But I’ve come across so many albums that were almost painful to listen on this list that I felt it would be unfair. So I’ll go up to a 3*. I may have been influenced by the fact that after listening to some shitty music today, I was starved for anyting half-decent.... so I might come back to this album later and change my review. Or not.

Decent album, not massively into it but it kind of passed by.

Standout Songs: Venus Marquee Moon Prove It

Absolutely killer instrumentals. I just really didn’t like the sound of the singer’s voice for some reason.

I was aware of Television but never heard a song from them until now. The album is ok, I can see why a lot of people drew inspiration from them. The first half is good, especially "Marquee Moon", but some of the songs, especially the last one, "Torn Curtain" dragged. . I think after 5 70s albuns in a row I might need a different decade. . Fistt half was 4, overall 3 out of 5

Sauber gespielt und interessanter Ansatz, aber für mich als Laie soso

3/5…wish I could go 2.5. Definitely can hear their influence on post-punk pop groups, like the Cars. Angular rhythms and fluid leads. However, Vocal is pure punk…never mind if it’s any good or off pitch, they’ve got stories to tell now, and it’s not for me

One of those bands you always hear about as being influential for the type of song they created. Feels like a looser version of the strokes. Nice to listen to, if a little repetitive over the course of the album

Not everything stuck, but what did was exceptional (especially for 77’). Marquee Moon is a fantastic track I wonder how many bands site these guys as influential. They certainly sound like the 90s/00s alt scene

Not my type...but well going

Liked this album overall, though somewhat repetitive.

fine. kinda banger kinda boring.

Very influential and fresh in its day but feels flat now - too one dimensional. Need to be fourteen again to listen to the whole album

This was fine, but forgettable.

the music is good but the vocals just SUCK!

Not the biggest fan of this one. It didn't really keep my attention (although I was tired today so perhaps I'll have to give it another go). Didn't dislike it, just didn't really like it either. Venus is probably my favourite, although I truthfully don't remember any of the songs distinctly.

Somnifère j’aime bien Prove It

I like this album instrumentally but the vocal delivery is pretty insufferable for the majority of its run… Fav tracks - See No Evil - Friction - Marquee Moon - Prove it

The techno punk sound, years before synth hit regular radio was really cool. At the end, though, most songs sounded the same, and the lead singer was mostly monotone.

Nice guitar solo on the title track Marquee Moon

Well I guess it wasn't for me. It's not I hated it, I just felt... Yeah nothing. Maybe I should just admit I don't like punk music. Because I never really do anyways.... The only song I (really) liked was Marquee Moon, and at some points I thought the song was too long... And I don't recall any other songs... Like it DEFINITELY WASN'T BAD but not something I would listen to every days. It's just too "blank" for me, I guess. Sometimes I wish I wasn't so complicated in music, for real!

Haha, I just wrote a thing about being a bit bored by an album that stretches and stretches instead of narrowing its focus as the group would do later in their career and what do I get next (actually this could be a series that started off with a Funkadelic album, also no stranger to long run times) but fucking Marquee Moon. The challenge for me and Television is that they were sold as one of the CBGBs bands: Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads, all bands indebted to punk in one way or another, with its stripped-down, back-to-basics formulas. Instead of 3 chords and cut the shit at 2:30, we get magisterial guitar epics clocking in at over 10 minutes. Guitar work that could be confused with the Allman Brothers or Skynyrd. Choruses that scan as fairly rote 70s rock, if sung with a distinctly different voice. Everyone should have a good connection with the title track at some point or another, maybe give their other albums a listen.

I've never even heard of this band. I loved the music and hated the vocals. The groove in Friction was amazing and the second half of the title track (where it's instrumental) 👌

I can see how this influenced a lot of music, sounds similar to Jet, but a bit too harsh for me

Listened to this a few days ago and can't recall it at all which hardly speaks volumes. New wave in style?

Overall: neutral opinion. Favorite track: Elevation Couldn’t Have Gone into this album any more blindly. Never heard of the band, album, and never heard a single song. Feels like a disservice to listen to this on something other than vinyl. This band feels like one part Pink Floyd, one part Rush, and one part Rolling Stones. I liked it just fine. Band would be right at home on a Classic Rock station. Not mad to listen to them but not worth seeking out for additional listens

These songs have some cool guitar moments but overall, I'm not that into it. It's okay.

Pretty crazy this was released in 1977 since I definitely could’ve confused it for something released in the early 2000s. That being said, while it sounds ahead of its time, it sounded too on the nose with a lot of other stuff I’ve already heard before. It was solid stuff but nothing too great to me.

This one had me torn. Overall enjoyable and I enjoy their sound, there’s some creativity in this album in pockets but is a bit samey. I don’t think I’m quite on a 4 but it’s a very solid 3.

Never heard of them before. They are a really solid and interesting band. The guitair is excellent and the main selling point for me. Over the top we have a slightly grating raw vocal that mixes well. Aged very well I would say and and must have proved somewhat influentially you would think. I do hear more modern bands in their sound. Nearly gave 4. Pleased to have discovered this album!

É um bom disco. Destaco as partes de guitarras (que são a base so álbum), com linhas melódicas bem construídas, timbres límpidos e sem distorções, bastante agradáveis. Os vocais me agradam em sua maioria. As canções são bastante agradáveis.

It's alright, I enjoyed it

Interesting take on punk

Never heard of them before this. Album is listenable. Songs are different enough that it doesn’t get repetitive and the album is shorter at 45 minutes. Not sure I’d recommend any one song.

Undoubtedly important and influential. It’s not really my jam, though. There’s nothing about the sound that makes me want to engage more. I’ll always take Talking Heads over Television, I guess. If I had the option, I’d give this 3.5 stars.

Can see how this influenced later bands. It's fine.

Sophisticated and mature

Primeros 30seg: no es el tipo de musica que yo pondría Canciones que llamaron mi atención: - Marquee Moon - Elevation

Never could get into it.

Fine, not awful not great

okayisher 70er rock, aber nichts was ich nochmal hören würde

Eh, I wonder what else is on. I did actually like a section in this when the vocals stopped.

Some songs sound very 80s for a 70s album. Like the genre bending a lot. Catchy tunes. Fave is Torn Curtain.

couple songs sounded familiar, solid classic rock album

Liked this, very melodic rock. Didn’t super grab my attention and listened to it over three sittings.

Forgettable and not enjoyable. Not for me.

Not against it, and enjoyed listening but not my type of music

#598. I saw this one was highly rated, and there were a lot of 5 star ratings on here, but I guess I just don't get it. It just sounds like someone trying to make a prog-punk version of the Rolling Stones or something. 3/5: fine

3.0/5.0: Good

Nothing stood out particularly, but I enjoyed the vibes.

I thought the song Marquee Moon was the standout. I thought some of the drums and hi-hats in particular were quite good. Overall a pleasant listen, something I wouldn't have chosen myself.

It was fine, wont be coming back but that last song kinda ripped.

i was gonna rank this with 2 stars at the beginning, HOWEVER, the last couple of songs made it up, soooo 3 will be sufficient... i feel like this album had kind of a dark vibe but i liked it and the guitar solos were great. my two favorites are Guiding Light and Torn Curtain. by the way!, the hell with the lyrics "you complain of my dic....tion" in the song Friction... that pause in the middle of the word.... huh

Another new band to me. Reminded me a bit of David Byrne and Talking Heads back in the day or Franz Ferdinand today. Didn’t hate it, but it didn’t really WOW me. No big standout songs. Just a fun listen.

Never heard of this band. There were a few fun guitar riffs but I didn’t feel like anything stood out, so I’ll probably forget who this band was by next week.

Nothing stood out to me as a major hit, but it was consistently good throughout the album and felt a bit ahead of it's time in some ways.

I didn’t mind this but nothing about it really caught my attention either

A couple great songs but it didn’t keep my interest as an entire album. I can hear the influence on a lot of what came along later.

It’s 1977. That’s important. But this is not punk. It has punk ethos. But these guys are impressive and talented instrumentalists. This is a very influential album. The twin guitar work influenced Wilco, a lot. But how are the songs? They are decent. It’s not my favorite. It’s also tough to get past Tom Verlaines vocals. That said, the music is very good. The guitars are great. So I’m torn. I am not gonna play this one for fun. It’s an album critics loved. I’m going with three stars because they are great players. Docked a star for average vocals and non memorable songs. Highlights are See no evil and Marquee Moon

Enjoyed this one the drums were a high point for me

Really absolutely fine

It's fine. Got some classics on here.

Pretty decent stuff. The voice grows on you

Pretty generic sort of folky country stuff

It’s okay

It’s ok.

I had listened to this once before as it was mentioned as an important album, and I remember being thoroughly unimpressed, even disliking it (when it came up, I realised this was for the track Marquee Moon itself). On this relisten for this project it doesn't seem nearly so bad, which I think is a reflection of how I don't really enjoy most things I hear. (And I liked Marquee Moon more than previously, the guitar sounding very Fairport Convention in the second half of the track.) This sounds fine, even pretty good. A bit punky, a bit rock and roll, even a bit Britpop, remarkable for a band from New York who released this in 1977. I do find the singer's voice quite annoying, but the instrumentation is great. A mixed bag, but I'm glad I gave it another go.

liked it but not massive on it, i appreciate what it's doing

Television (the band) is an unknown for me. Their debut comes out of nowhere and is quite good. Solid early indy rock. I particularly like the technical guitar work which really shines on the title track. Lead singer Verlaine has some Jagger Swagger. Band looks like a bunch of strung out bean poles on the album cover but these boys can play...3.4

at first glance, it sounds like what would happen if the beatles tried to go punk. i’m not complaining or anything but it’s weird to me the juxtaposition of the relatively low-quality production and vocals and then all of a sudden they hit the cleanest little classic rock guitar solo like what is going on here

Not bad but the vocals annoy me.

Alright I suppose

My mum plays the top track off of each album for me to guess each day. When I first heard the top track (the title track), I thought it sounded like modern pop! I was quite surprised to learn it was from 1977

Cool guitar riffs, sexy vocals. I can hear the influence of this band on music that came from my generation.

Singing sucks but the music is great. Like The Clash but...better?

I recognized there was something different about the improvisational structure of these songs but couldn’t quite put my finger on it. Reading up about Television I saw they removed the blues element from their music and stuck to more lyrical rock / jazz lines. I agree with this; the album was pretty good.

One of those albums which is held up as seminal, one of the greatest etc. I did use to own this as a vinyl album, I think because I thought I should. Whilst it’s a decent album, say it quietly, I never fully raved about it but always probably said the right things. I’ll listen again but it doesn’t make me swoon. It’s Kraftwerk done on guitars.

First listen

Not bad. Don’t recall ever hearing of this band before but this album has a cool, 70s groove. Enough so I’ll listen to more by them. 3+

Really like this album, didn't have too much that made it stand out, though. Really enjoyed the dynamic bass lines in all the songs, and that definitely bumps it up. My favorite song was Venus.

Fun sounds

✅✅✅ Marquee Moon ✅✅ Elevation Reminded me at points of Led Zeppelin, the Stones, and Sir Elton. Really like the lead vocals, the guitar riffs, and the pacing. Sandy sunset beach concert vibes.

Now this is more like it, very decent sharp indie rock (I wouldn’t call it punk, and I wouldn’t call it rock and roll either) with beautiful melodies dispersed throughout. Really enjoyable, and it will definitely be listened to again!

I know Television is a band I should like in order to be a true music snob. This album is alright, I guess. The guy's voice reminds me of Violent Femmes.

Not too shabby, but also not super memorable :(

Surprisingly, I enjoyed this. I say surprisingly as it's not my usual go to and when the album started I wasn't feeling it but as the album went on and it grew on me I enjoyed the riffs and will definitely be having another listen.

A few good tracks, nice listen

Although the voice is practically unbearable, just like every other singer from the late punk era who shared the same tone, intent, and intentional off-key singing, the musical component of the band is extremely interesting, and the solutions hint at genres very different from the post-punk average, which makes this album particularly enjoyable even for me

Just another whatever

Yeah, artsy punk I guess. Except when they played for 10 MINUTES!!!! THATS NOT VERY PUNK

Devo-like

Late 70’s new wave feel

Awesome to hear two incredibly iconic sample on 'Elevation'. The end of 'Marquee Moon' was nice too.

Not bad, very psych esque classic rock sound. Elevation was probably my favorite.

Guitar forward album! Worked very often, highlights for me being Friction and Torn Curtain, however! I Did Not like the titular Marquee Moon, found the rhythm to monotonous and headache inducing.

Good album!

A keystone album during the first punk period but not really a punk album in my opinion. Has great moments on it.

Quite enjoyed it

Never heard of the band before. Some nice songs here.

Ah marquee moon. The gaunt visage that has launched a thousand music nerds into post-punk hysteria. The grainy, almost horror-like image aside, I have heard one or two songs from this out of sheer curiosity over the years. It never sunk its teeth into me the way, say “Antiques Roadshow” or Speed Network staple “PassTime” did. God help those who under estimate the drag racing prowess of the modified Chevrolet Nova. I know nothing about cars. Take it away music nerds, another day in the rarified air of pretension. See No Evil - Kane stars as Jacob Goodnight in See No Evil. Next time, see Kane runs for governor of Tennessee under the republican ticket with the campaign slogan of “Now I’m Actually Evil.” This song is catchy, frantic and has an excellent riff as its spine, holding up the ball of nervous flesh that makes up the rest of the song. Venus - You can really hear the influence that this album had moving forward. It’s interesting to hear it at its origin. While the combination of television and Venus flashes the razor commercial from the early 2000s into my mind like Korea flashbacks, this song is fine. Friction - Ah, this is the one I’ve heard recently. Spotify loves two things: Underpaying artists, and playing the same songs repeatedly. If you sit through a song in an attempt to get its full experience, that means you LOVED it and only want to hear it forever. That and MF DOOM. Jokes on you Spotify, I actually do like this song, but a man has to mix it up. Marquee Moon - The titular track. A comment on the concept of celebrity culture? Where the names on the marquee glow so bright as to obscure that which truly guides our path?Maybe it’s about light pollution. Either way, another interesting piece of odd music. Bit just odd. This song is technically proficient and combines that with lyrics and timbres that are resonating emotionally. Add that funky break during the outro. What a monster. Elevation - Ironically, a de-escalation. Not a full on freefall, but certainly an extreme downgrade from the previous few tracks. I actually find the repeated chorus and main riff to be extremely grating here. This has set us back a whole day on our voyage to the summit. Guiding Light - Who sends these infamous gifts? Who thought it would be a good idea to frame and gift wrap that obviously AI produced image of Abe Lincoln playing in that alligator poker tournament? And why isnt he winning? We got to get this guy OUT of the secret Santa circuit. Not acceptable behaviour. This song kind of sounds like that one love song in Shrek. Couldn’t name it if you had a gun to my head, but I pulled a “Jacob Goodnight” reference out of my ass a few songs back. Just the way the microplastics flow baby. This song was another snooze. Prove It - Almost wrote “Probe it” ERRRRRRMM is it time for my physical already??? Ugh. Anyway. These songs are losing much of their lustre. Torn Curtain - Ladies and Gentlemen (updated to include non-binary audience members) it’s the world’s skinniest band!! Alright. This is barely a song. The guitarist just wanted to do more stuff. I’m not even getting the emotional weight anymore. No matter how many times you say “tears.” With Marquee Moon echoing its final strains through my short term memory banks, I feel conflicted. On one hand, I Ioved many of the first few tracks and found them to be supremely creative and musical. On the other hand, as time went on, I couldn’t tell if I was fatigued, or if the musicians themselves were in a stupor. What started so fresh, got stale, but with the sheer excellence exhibited in the early stages, I have to tip my proverbial novelty sombrero to the most angular fellas in album cover history. You guys would’ve loved being instagram influencers. Pass me that remote, I think I’ll watch a bit more of this Television. 3-3.5 HIGHLIGHTS: See No Evil, Friction, Marquee Moon,

A good album, I liked Venus the most.

The lead singer's voice is not great, but I like this. They kind of remind me of Talking Heads. Marquee Moon is a good listen. I don't have a lot of thoughts on this album...it feels very average. I bet The Eels loved the song Guiding Light...something about it reminds me of their album. There's a similarity to the Clash I can't put my finger on with these guys. Torn Curtain is maybe the best song on the album, strong ending.

I liked this more as it went. I’m tempted with a 4 but it needs to age more. Good vibe. I hear a lot other bands in this album.

Just interesting enough to keep my attention

Don’t really get the hype for this one, vocals were really difficult to make out and not particularly enjoyable in tone. The music is very dynamic though, with each role getting a chance to shine throughout the album. Guitar solos are the strongest parts. Listened to: walking around Brooklyn. Favorite tracks: Guiding Light, Torn Curtain

didnt listen too closely. too anxious today. pretty good commuting soundtrack though.

It's ok. I just don't like this kind of rock. Specially the vocals. But I can appreciate their influence on many modern acts. It's ok for background music I guess.

Nothing against this album, the guitar was good, there were some neat kinda space-y sections that I liked, the vocals were alright, though I’m not sure I’d go back and listen to any of these songs on a whim. 5/10

Interesting at points, but didn’t like it that much

It was fine. A decent listen, but I probably won’t repeat.

This was okay, I didn't really have strong feelings about it. I liked the title track. Rating: 3.

I can hear the influence this had on a ton of stuff that came after, but it’s not very exciting itself. I appreciate that they tried to stray from pentatonic rock riffing, but the result just doesn’t do it for me.

ya ben sıkıldım artık the smiths tarzı geleneksel rocktan ya folklöre kaçın böyle yemekleriniz gibi ingilizler baharatsız ve tatsız

Listen-able but weak standouts

Fun, weird 70s proto punk

everyone in the top reviews must be hearing something i'm not, because this was just... fine to me. a lot of songs that dragged on way too long. i wish i liked it as much as some of these other people!!

Decent for forgettable for me

Cool - can hear a lot of the transition from angry non-technical punk to the songwriting angst of the early 80s alternative and even new wave.
