Best Song: Friction Worst Song: Venus Album Score: 7/10
Hadn't heard of these guys before, and was pleasantly surprised to listen to their album. This has been classed as punk, but it's much more composed and executed than what I'd class as the punk sound. Guitar work is excellent, some unique riffs in there, and the sound was consistent throughout. My only negative would be the vocals, I found him to be a tad whiny. All in all, not a bad album, was worth a listen.
It has taken me a couple of listens to be able to get through Marquee Moon. Nearly all of the songs had very appealing musical scores (if that is the right phrasing) although nothing really caught me. I think if i were to listen to this album regularly, it might grow on me…otherwise I just kept hearing the Talking Heads! I’m going to give them a 4 because they are better than a 3
Loved this! How have I never heard of this band. It’s clear how much the vocalist influenced Gordon Gano of the Violent Femmes, one of my favorites. It rocks in all the right ways.
First track is good if a little generic but the second picked it up and was quite jaunty. Then friction was really great with its funky guitar riff before leading into the epic title track. Very awesome. However elevation felt super janky and repetitive 👎. It ended pretty well though.
I liked this one very chill 60/70s rock
Sounded like a Rolling Stones album to me on the whole.... which is not bad thing!
Solid old indie rock. Reminded me of Minutemen
Interesting, they used to play CBGB'S
9/10
This was really good - could I think have been proper top drawer with a better vocal - sounds way fresher and more modern than it is, could quite easily have been part of that wave of early 2000s bands (someone like Modest Mouse sounds like a very close descendent of this sound). I liked the title track (but would agree that it didn't need a full 10 minutes), liked the slowed down Guiding Light too. A lovely bridge between punk and new wave that somehow seems to take a lot of the best of both. A low 4/5.
Elevation was lit
Super good, what a great find by the album generator.
great!
Largely hook-driven which was nice. Your favorite band, favorite band.. ya know.. overall decent
There’s probably historical context for this being influential and stuff. I like the title track for sure. Some of the songs were a vibe. Would probably listen again for lyrics.
Good songs, heard the foundation for some modern bands in here. But didn't really like the vocals
Noch nie gehört. Aber ein großartiges Rock-Album
This sits in an interesting niche that isn't punk and isn't rock. Melodic but still fairly sparse, it was a good find
Y'know, on the one hand I don't feel like I 100% get what all of the hullabloo is about this album. Maybe I just haven't listened to enough that's been influenced by it; maybe I've heard **too much**... I can't tell. But of course what I **can** say is that this album is good. Damn good. I wouldn't say it's my favorite 70's rock album, buit it's gotta be way up there. I wasn't able to get in a second listen to "Torn Curtain" before the day ended, but from the little bit I sampled of it while I was writing this... Goodness me. So, like, in one sense at least I get this album's praise.
New wave punk at its finest.
Bro I totally loved this
Rock • post-punk, released 1977 Found this entertaining the whole way through
Cool
Punk sound but variable, and deep. Not loud and abrasive, trying to get more out of the punk sound than I’ve heard in most other instances. Very enjoyable 45 minute listen.
Patti-Smith-meets-strangled-cat vocals (in a good way) and angular guitars transform fairly poppish tunes into jangly works of art. Essential.
4/5
thank you alvvays for naming a song after tom verlaine and leading me to this fantastic album that is somehow both of its time and beyond it. killer riffs with some songs that are a lil bit overindulgent.
These guys ROCK
Its really rather good - an album for adults
marquee moon, torn curtain i couldn't stop hearing "meows" in torn curtain :o
Friction, Prove it, and Torn Curtain were my faves
Hot sauce!
solid album. nothing bad to say about it.
Pas pire
OAAA 8/10
Great!
I wanted to like this more. There's a lot I like about it. I just think the songs drag on a little too long and I'm not crazy about the vocals all the time. I can see how it influenced a ton of artists I love. I'm going to rate it a little higher than my gut reaction because I will probably keep listening to see if it grows on me over time.
Marquee Moon, great song, very solid album.
I enjoyed this! Sounds a little bit silly at times but overall a jam.
This surprised me - it's not usually my genre (despite being a New Yorker of a Certain Age™), but I found myself really enjoying what I heard. Venus was the stand-out track on the album for me.
Meh
Television was another band I had heard great things about but never listened to- I think it mostly lived up to the hype.
definitely my music taste just the songs at the end go a bit too long
Ambitious and progressive but without leaning too much into the excesses of that particular term. To me, something of an early model for later "math-rock" bands; American Football, Parquet Courts etc.
I enjoyed it but like many classics I think it suffers from what came after it. It probably doesn’t sound as groundbreaking as it originally did, but the musicality and overall feel of the album is still great.
interesting
Primo stuff, my guy.
This was really good! I'm adding a few of these to my library
Interesting. A little bit of a meh vibe Elevation was kinda cool tho
It took a couple of listens to really appreciate, but you can hear how this sound influenced a lot of early 2000's indie/punk music. There are unreal guitar riffs all over this album and some great solo's on Marquee Moon which is worth the 10 minute listen everytime.
I really enjoyed this one. I can hear how influential this was to some of favourite modern bands. Very surprised I had not come across this before. Highlights: Friction, Marquee Moon, Prove It.
70/100 Based on this scale: 1 star - 0 to 19 2 stars - 20 to 39 3 stars - 40 to 59 4 stars - 60 to 79 5 stars - 80 to 100 Solid, fun album. I wasn't familiar with this band. Some of the songs were a bit long for what they were, but most had something interesting in them.
Begon zeikerig, maar werd steeds beter, 3.5
Little on character, big on talent.
A lot of interesting guitar work. Some of the songs are really good, a couple get a little boring. Overall really good.
3.5
Like it. Love the era, hear some of the modern bands I listen to, like The Nude Party in their sound.
Very good album
This was a very pivotal album for me growing up, and much like an appearance on The Simpsons…when a world renowned band covers one of your songs, then clearly you’ve “made it.” Check out REM covering the track See No Evil.
Surprisingly good for an album/band I've never heard of. Quite Talking Heads-ish, only they seem to come a few years before. Only given a couple of listens but I think it's one that will be need to be on rotation before I can fully understand it
Not the strongest of starts I thought, but from Marquee Moon onwards it's all 5/5 tracks. A lot of the time feels like a jam that's turned into a song, which is great. Great guitar solos throughout the album as well.
YES.
Not bad! I. marked one song as a fav so I can go back and listen to more.
I've heard some hype for this one over the years and yeah that's a great album. Interesting that it's always connected with punk, because it's not really punk at all yet it definitely *feels* like punk for some reason. The singer's kinda bad, which is an issue, but the music is really something and often sounds years ahead of its time. Best song: Marquee Moon
Before it's time. You can hear the roots or 90s alternative in this album.
Listened Before? N Kinda rock-y, kinda jam-band-y, kinda new-wave-y, this was a lot of fun. I really liked the title track despite it's 10+ minute run time. Will revisit. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Marquee Moon
ugodno iznenadenje
How very fierce. First song has driving beat and pretty banging guitar but exaggerated and overwrought vocal style. Feels like listening to the Cars but with funkier style. Fun, though not my usual listening style. More fun as the album goes on, with playful guitar solos and fun melodies.
4.5/5
I already had a song added to my playlist previously, but i have never gotten to actually listen to the whole album, it was fun. the songs felt kinda the samey, but that didn't annoy me. - 5 adds (excluding the one i already knew)
Really enjoyed this! Alternative rock from the 2000s seem to have been greatly influenced by these guys. 4/5
Врло добар 8/10
A very good, unique, stylish post-punk album. Actually there are a lot of progressive elements musically. You can hear they got the influence from band like the Velvet Undeground, and you can also hear how much they influenced later bands like the Strokes, for example. Perhaps I'd need a bit more time to get into the album more, so far it is a strong 4 from me.
Didn’t immediately grab me, but I was sold by the end. Worth another listen.
I do like this, but Patti Smith does it better
Was going to be a five but the last two songs didn't quite hit perfection for me.
I liked this album. A lot of the songs had a very unique sound.
Really cool, not expected for the 70s
4 from 5.
War ganz net wavig
Gefällt mir erstmal ganz gut. Punkige Gitarrenmusik, wirkt ein bisschen sympathisch-dilletentisch.
Loved this one, you can guess the impact it had in ‘77 and how it was so influential and defining to so many bands. Going on my must-have list.
Masterclass. 40 años y suena adelantado. 4.5/5
A slightly generous 4 for a good week.
Thoughts before listening: I know this one. Great album. Review: Television gets called a punk band but that's mainly cause they came out of the CBGBs scene. This is more of what would come to be called indie rock or post-punk. Really good guitar playing throughout and a huge influence on many of the bands I grew up listening to. The title track is the best song here and the second half of the album isn't as good as the first.
Really nice rock album, but just lacked something. I think it needed 1 really "hit" track to make it a truly dynamic album.
Initially it didn't seem too special but then we got to the masterpiece that is title track. This was possibly the only track I was already familiar with and I think it's the reason this album made the cut. From that point onward I enjoyed the album much more; I really liked Prove it and the theatrical drama of Torn Curtain was a strong finish.
Invented a new guitar vocabulary. Birth of punk from the bloated rock late 70s. The staccato guitar and shaky vocals usher in something new from the CBGB. Marquee Moon pushes the limits and you have to be on board for it.
Really fun. An epic album with great tunes.
Another band I missed from the late 70s. It really shows that I was too dependent on what the radio played in those days. I really enjoyed the music and lyrics.
5 star side A, 3 star side B.
This is a pretty good album. Some nice bass and drum parts.
I had a friend who introduced this album to me back in the mid 1980s, so around ten years after the album was first released. I always liked the title track, but struggled to find anything else that really stood out to me. Having not listened to this for over thirty years it was a pleasant musical journey. The guitar is superlative, but the vocals don't quite work for me I'm afraid. It seems really unfair to mark this down from 5 stars based on the artists that the album inspired, but I can hear just a little too much David Byrne in the vocals for my liking, and that sours my experience a little. Love the simple production, the guitar sounds, even the hisses and pops from the vinyl on the version I listened to. It's a tricky balancing act between post punk, pop/rock, even progressive rock in places. Sometimes the style will change mid-track, which I love. For the most part the band keep that balance tight and I can see why this is a classic, but it's not quite perfect in my opinion.
This is fantastic
First thoughts- super solid and unique production / songwriting but maybe a teeny bit repetitive
Really enjoyable album. Listened through several times. You could play this in a garage drinking with your buddies.
I enjoyed this album. Nothing real specific to say. I'm no expert critic. Just enjoyed it.
first listen i dig it
A really British album from a New York band. Loved it. Listened to it many times.
Really good album, his voice reminds me a little of the violent femmes
Like it

Good rock album, start is stronger than the end
Never heard of this band before but the album cover looks like something I’d love so let’s seeee. Ah I’m enjoying this a lot, it reminds me of something but unsure what. It feels very Modern and ahead of its time, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of these songs had been released this side of 2000. Very reminiscent of The Strokes? (Went and read reviews and surprised other people said this too ahah) Marquee Moon was probably my favourite. What a gem of an album!
First time listening to this, but have been aware of it for a while now. Really delivers. Enjoyed so much of this. 4.5/5
Love first 2, especially the funny “what” and “yeah” exclamations in Venus. Ngl Marquee Moon got a little long. At 8 minutes just going DU DU DU up the scale I was kinda like okay why are we spending the climax of the song doing a scale but I also did enjoy the musical interlude.
solid vibes, liked the instrumentals. an overall yes
Seems like they were ahead of their time and likely influenced many others. Not sure how this one alluded me all these years!
Fun rock feel with Melodie’s that wrap throughout. Not anything crazy but was fun. Would listen again
Quite interesting album, very modern and clean sound of guitars for a record from 1977. The melodies and riffs are actually pretty good, though they are offset by some real howling by the main man Tom Verlaine. Apparently, this album is pretty important, making a way for the post- post punk generation, before the real post punk was even created. Kudos to that, even without this knowledge Marquee Moon is an entertaining position on this list.
A pleasant surprise. Never heard of them or any songs before, but reasonably enjoyed
It's really good music. I hear all the influences they had on later post punk, but it's not captivating. I'll probably listen one or two more times to catch the complexities I missed, but I get why this band wasn't more famous. I wish I could have been around to see them live though. I bet they were incredible.
Wa pas mal, le morceau marquee moon avec son solo est exceptionnel, le dernier morceau très dark mais sentiment de morceaux pas fini. Des très bon moments au milieu mais les premiers morceaux me sont un peu passé au dessus
The album was great. The guitar was the best part. Singing was hypnotic and very soothing.
Me gusta mucho!!
I really liked this, crazy how it came out way before this sound was more mainstream.
I like it , like like a little jump from the punk of the Ramones to other more modern rock kinda things Get hints of the eagles Feel like modest mouse is like them
7.5/10 fave: marquee moon
Title track is genius. The rest is very good but not as good
Simple yet satisfying. I’ve always been a fan.
Great album, can't complain.
Man, the influence on contemporary music, 80s music, etc,f are alllll over this album. Talking heads, bowie, more contemporary bands like Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah. It's creative. It's got tons of character. Fun to listen to.
rock punk that sounds good kinda sounds similar to the beatles
Better than the previous day's 70s offering. Still very 70s, but it feels a little more energetic and edgy.
This is like Talking Heads and Violent Femmes had a baby…
I've never heard any of these songs before, this was a really good album. Enjoyed the entire thing. The title track Marquee Moon was my favorite song of the album
Fairly decent. Lots of 70s and early 80s flavour
Lots of great post-punk albums on here. Love this early new-wave stuff
I love this album. Doesn't sound like it's from late 70s
Enjoyable album especially for Punk fans like me.
This one came together a bit more for me on the second listen. I also think the second half of the album is stronger than the first half (Guiding Light and Prove It are my favorite songs), which made me come around to it more after letting it settle in. A few things I don’t love. For some reason I find the singers voice to be a little annoying over the course of the full album, even though he’s clearly great. The first half of the album also felt a bit generic to me, though it came together nicely eventually. Lastly, the songs are also all on the long side (including the 10 minute Marquee Moon track), which generally isn’t my favorite album structure. That said, I did really end up enjoying this, particularly on the second listen. This is considered to be a pretty pivotal album for early punk rock, and I get the appeal. I get strong Modest Mouse vibes at times (I think largely the vocals sound similar on Marquee Moon). It’s unique enough to keep things interesting, and is generally a strong 70s rock album. I’m not as into this as some of the reviews I’ve seen online, but it’s largely enjoyable. Probably a 3.5 for me, but enough good here that I’ll round up. Favorite song: Guiding Light Other: Venus, Marquee Moon, Prove It
An album that is built around the fulcrum of the title track. There is no getting away that is stands head and shoulders above all the others. But most of them are startlingly strong as well. While the vocals may become a little whiney over time the guitar playing and rhythm section more than overcome this. There are scintillating recurring guitar motifs sprinkled across the tracks. An extraordinary rock album that teased us lyrically and musically.
Great album, “Elevation” sounded weird during chorus. I think they were having mixing issues.
pretty good rock. 4 stars.
Note my thing but great
Today's album is by a band I've never heard of before. Television took traditional punk, removed the power chords, and replaced them with complex jazz and rock solos. Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd were both jam guitarists, who liked to dabble quite a bit, as can be heard all through this record. Apparently the band met with Brian Eno initially to produce the record, but demos of the album didn't sit well with them, so they scrapped Eno, and produced it themselves, with the help of Andy Johns. Thank God for that, because I am not much of a fan of Eno's style at all! Overall, a pretty good all around record. Hell of a lot of talent in this band, and showcased on this record. Another found band that I never would have discovered had it not been for this generator! Favourite songs: Friction, See No Evil, Venus, Marquee Moon Least favourite song: Torn Curtain 4/5
See No Evil- The theme is thinking and dreaming of ambitions, all these of pure happiness and good, without and bad or evil things to stomp upon it. However, the singer tries to persuade the listener this isn’t how life is and to wake up and realize the world around them. The outro adds a message to control your future (4.5) Venus- The singer focuses on a being called “Venus” who is described in countless eloquent ways throughout the track (3.5) Friction- An interpretative track, loosely centers around the idea of friction, possibly as a parallel to miscommunication and difficulty to collectively act? (3) Marque Moon- A scattered but well produced song, focused on living life with purpose and not drifting around and leaving your fate up to chance (5) Elevation- This song is about how the singer has reached a higher place where common judgement does not break his stride, and he continues reminiscing about when it did (4) Guiding Light- Once again the singer talks about purpose and the path his life is on, and whether this is indeed a guiding light showing him the right way, or if he really is all alone (3.5) Prove It- A chapter in the singers life which constantly bugged and peeved him is finally over, and he is ready to move on (4) Torn Curtain- After a long time of avoiding the pain in his life, the singer finally get caught by the dark, tearing his life and throwing him into despair (3) Summary: A indie album with a collection of guitar solos and drums that match in a rigid sort of way lead the way for the dreamy and loosely pieced ideas each tracks puts forward. All in all an interesting album with some good songs; OVERALL 4/5
pretty chill
honestly very good, its not my style of music but kinda cool
I think I figured out where The Strokes get their vibes from. Marquee Moon feels a hell of a lot more deliberate, though. Maybe just as coked out, I don't know, but trading out the horniness for some sense of deliberation that, on my second listen, I'm really starting to appreciate. Doesn't hurt that the title track is one of the consensus greatest songs of all time, either. A pondering werewolf kind of 4/5.
i really liked the music. they have their style but it is not repetitive at all. very interesting and experimental! one thing though is the lead singers voice:( you get used to it during the album, but i do think it ruins the music. at least it devalues it, which is a shame!
Could have been made much more recently and still sounded up-to-date, which is quite a feat.
Another one from the annals of the Bamford family. This played on our record player from the time I was nine. I still love hearing the crackles of a proper LP. It’s clever, poetic, strikingly original for its time. Lines like - I fell right into the arms of Venus de Milo - are poignant but also humorous - highlighting the absurdity of adolescent love. But it’s not just lyrically astute, those guitars suck you in. These are talented musicians whose legacy is incontrovertible. The songs draw you in, they have good hooks. I love this not only for the nostalgic blast but because they can write damn good songs. It’s not quite a 5 today for me though.
It's been ages since I listened to this, other than the title track, and as side one was playing I wondered why I didn't listen to this album more frequently, as every song delivered on every level. But side two kind of dragged me down a bit. So it's a 4. But damn, when it's on, it's on. Inventive and fun arrangements, lyrical solos, great drumming, cool bass lines. Side one gets a 5, and I'll definitely be listening to that more frequently.
This album represents what is my sweet spot for sound. I discovered Television around the same time I was hitting Patti Smith hard. And that makes sense because they both come from a similar sound and life (NJ) where poetry is important. Man that guitar riff (deedledeedledeedle deedledeedledeedle deedledeedledeedle) on Marquee Moon just does something to me. This song is such a great example of how Television combines poetry and sound. That guitar riff makes me think of the rain dripping down and the sage advice “don’t be so sad.”
Refreshing addition to the list. Jammy like Allman Brothers, but vocally like Violent Femmes. A solid listen.
an original, complex, interesting and highly listenable. Hard to categorise but some lovely guitar interplay and atmospheric songs. The title track is just beautiful
I really liked this. Good overall vibe, and I loved the guitar playing. Would play this regularly.
Big fan of this album in general. I was already familiar with it and I've gone back and forth on it a bit. Overall, the quality is really there and I'm there with it. However, the title track is too long and I get bored with it. Similar with the last song. Those tracks being shorter would put it in 4.5 territory, but as it is, it's like a 3.75. 3.75/5
One of the first non-metal albums I fell in love with. Tom Verlaine’s guitar tone shook the hell out of me, and it sounds as good as ever. Not all songs are equal, but it still sounds quite fresh A-, bordering on an A
Very good. Different style of punk than I'm used to. More meandering and romantic rather than rebellious. No anthems but that's to its benefit. Enjoyable overall.
Listened a couple times while working but felt like I needed to deliberately listen so I grabbed a beer and went for a walk in a nice 75 degrees summer. Definitely can see how many bands were influenced by this song. So many little moments I was like “hey, this sounds like The Strokes, The Wire, Dexys, insertrockpunkbandhere”. A couple tracks don’t quite do it for me but there’s a nice formula here. I like the interplay between vocals and instrument. Dynamics, they got it. Fav tracks: Friction, Marquee Moon
Amazing instrumentals, held back by a questionable vocal performance from Tom Verlaine. Personally it's just very grating most of the time, but when they let the instruments play, i catch myself enjoying the album quite a lot. Especially at the half way point of the track "Marquee Moon".
Well I'll be a monkey's uncle. Ghost covered See No Evil on their latest covers EP "Phantomime". I had no idea this was a Television song. I probably ought to look at the original versions when Ghost covers a song. Across their career they've covered more than a few songs from this list, that's for sure. Needless to say that See No Evil set things off to a good start for me. I'd been meaning to listen to Television since they got a bunch of vinyl represses when I worked at Green Light, but never got around to it. That was the first I'd heard of them and their influence on punk music. Moving from See No Evil to the rest of the album I have to say that I enjoyed it throughout. The basslines are groovy as hell and there's a sweeping discordant quality to the guitar that I can't quite describe effectively. I also quite liked the vocals here and how they and the music seem to be talking back and forth at times. A few songs that were a little too jammy to leave a huge impression outside of how it makes me feel, meaning I don't see them getting stuck in my head or anything but they're cool to listen to nevertheless. Namely the title track, clocking in at 10 minutes long. A lot of proto-romantic themes that bridge the gap between punk and New Wave almost perfectly. Marquee Moon is an example of when punk started getting sad and thoughtful. 4.5
Adding into the music that clearly inspired my favorite rock bands today, bit of the blade runner affect but really really solid.
Classic album with a lot of solid tracks
I would've dismissed this as bland dad rock, but the guitar hooks are amazing!! Guiding Light and Marquee Moon are the best tracks.
A cracking rekkid - full of wit, energy and verve, and a prototypical post-punk album that still reverberates in much of the genre output today. The playful vocal deliveries belies something deeper in the lyrics that I'm keen to dig into. Some great great riffs, and the longer progressive song structures allow for some wonderful movements. Four and a half. Fave track: Friction
4.25
8/10
I had notes here but my computer crashed :( This instantly established itself as a 1970s album. It seems a little generic. However, I think it only sounds generic because it seems to have had such wide-ranging influence -- all its sounds have been reused (at least, I think it has had a wide-ranging influence). First impressions: 4/5. I think 7/10 at the end -- 3 or 4. The title song merits a 4.
What a key album from the 70’s
Great sound, good mix of songs long and short. The longer music instrumentals were all very enjoyable too
Good album. Not a fan of a song being 10 minutes long, but at least its a good song.
deserves the hype.
Was too drunk to take notes 😂 solid album though, a lot of unique sounds for a punk record, especially for the time
Didn’t dive into the lyrics much on this one cuz I was busy as I was listening but all of the instrumentals were cool. I think my favorite thing about this album is that you don’t see many bands combine the punk/garage rock aesthetic with complex guitar playing and the instrumentals so the album is very unique. Love it or hate it if you wanna hear that sound you have to listen to Television. 👍:marque moon, prove it
What a discovery! I've never heard of them before, but Torn Curtain and Marquee Moon were instantly added to my playlist.
It always takes some time for Marquee Moon to fully open itself up to me. I’m never fully invested on Side A (with the exception of the behemoth that is the title track). I like the sound but I have the feeling that I’m not allowed to enter Verlaine’s universe - at least not yet. Side B is the complete opposite and I lose myself in every second of it. Maybe it’s because “Marquee Moon” opened everything up just moments before? This is one impressive debut that helped pave the way for so many bands to come.
I've heard the song Marquee Moon before so I was excited to listen to the rest of the album. This shit slaps hard for 1977. Guiding light and prove it were definitely my least favorite songs but they weren't bad, Just a little slow. Every other song on here is awesome. I could definitely understand people not liking this singing style but I liked it. You can tell it definitely inspired a lot of other bands moving forward. Score: 80 Art: 70
Punk with a brain. Not really my style to return to, but I think I might anyway! Reminds me of the best Thin Lizzy.
I love this album it is so New York it is so proto punk it is very very good
Classic Proto-punk record. I really like it
Really enjoyed listening to this album. Took me right back to late 70s.
this album is actually mega sick. I was expecting it to be just like another of the stooges one but it's actually really good. marquee moon, torn curtain, Venus, loads of the tracks are really cool. good album guys.
glam art punk. This has been a grower for me. I like it more each listen.
What a nice surprise! Very good
Love this. Still sounds great
Cool ambul with awesome guitars
Marquee moon is a really great song, I thought that Franz ferdinand was inpired by them so I looked it up and they were, but the leader of the band said he didn't like Television and thought it the comparisons were annoying. Anyway I think television is one of those blueprint bands that everyone has taken inpiration from. The singer also sounds like David Byrne.
Really cool guitar record and way ahead of its time. Love it. 8/10
i dunno it's fine
ett coolt gammal alt rock album, det här gillade jag.
Soft 4 for me. This band was pretty cool, never listened to them before but right up my alley on sound. Really liked the last song a lot. Definitely would listen to their sound and other songs by them.
enjoyable to my ears. actually had never heard of this band until now
Not as great as I remember. But still such an important and inventive album.
A mixture of early punk attitude and glam sonics this is an album that certainly BRINGS it when you look and listen to the entire picture. With a ten minute title track there’s a clear direction…not one most bands of similar ilk at the time were navigating.
Great album. Jonny has been trying to get me to lists for a while and I’m so glad I had a reason to listen. Some incredible songs on here. The titular track is really special
pretty good album. Enjoyed it!
This is what I'd like to find more of
Slightly overrated. Very good though.
3.5
I was pretty underwhelmed on my first listen but by round 2 is started to impress me. The guitar riffs are very talented and diverse I decided to let Notion AI try to write an album review and here are the (surprisingly successful) results: Television's debut album, Marquee Moon, is a timeless masterpiece that has influenced countless musicians over the past four decades since its release in 1977. The album features intricate guitar work, poetic lyrics, and a unique blend of punk, art rock, and psychedelia that set it apart from other records of its time. The title track, "Marquee Moon," is a 10-minute epic that showcases the band's technical prowess and innovative songwriting. With its interlocking guitar riffs and atmospheric solos, the song takes the listener on a journey through various moods and emotions. "See No Evil" and "Friction" are other standout tracks, with their driving rhythms and catchy hooks. One of the album's strengths is the contrast between Tom Verlaine's and Richard Lloyd's guitar styles. Verlaine's playing is more intricate and melodic, while Lloyd's is more aggressive and muscular. The two guitarists complement each other perfectly, creating a sound that is both cerebral and visceral. Lyrically, the album deals with themes of alienation, disillusionment, and the search for meaning in a chaotic world. Verlaine's cryptic lyrics and delivery add to the album's mystique, leaving room for interpretation and reflection. In conclusion, Marquee Moon is a groundbreaking album that has stood the test of time. Its influence can be heard in the music of bands like Sonic Youth, The Strokes, and Interpol. If you're a fan of guitar-driven rock and roll, this album is a must-listen.
You can definitely see the influence this album had on post-punk music, and it’s very good album. One of the examples of an album that you really SHOULD listen to before you die, if you have any interest in music history. Yeah, I liked it. Fav tracks: See No Evil, Friction, Elevation Least fav: Prove It
Some tunes are iconic.
Excellent album. For me it doesn’t quite have the oomph to get to a 5 but I love the sound of it overall. High 4.
Marquee moon rocks
Zeker een klassieker, Marquee Moon (het nummer) is een 10/10 voor mij. Andere nummers op het album komen hier helaas niet echt in de buurt, dus geef ik het een 4.
Not what I expected and really good. Transition from punk to alternative. Kinda like the talking heads?
Like punky-er Rolling Stones. Pretty decent!
Just after Tom Verlaine died, bless him. Sounds Haunted and Nervous, like it. Innovators in the NYC scene.
Anthony Fantano rated this as his favorite album of the 1970s, and while I'm inclined to disagree, it really is a great sound. Manages to stay interesting throughout and knows when to end. You can hear little bits of what would constitute the next two decades of rock music sprinkled all throughout this release.
Again this being post punk means i cannot identify genres, wouldve put this as prog rock. Solid songs if a little long at times. Fave songs: see no evil, venus, marquee moon, elevation, torn curtain 4/5
Remains unknown It's time to sit up Up on the throne It's seen before but it's always new So look close and see who's come thru Never again to face this night I already marked 3 songs from this album as "loved" in Apple Music. Its not one of my all time favorite albums or anything but its pretty fucking good. 4/5
Rockpost-punkart punkgarage rock
This is a great record. Even for the title track alone
Apple calls this post-punk, but it's smack in the middle of the intelligent punk/art timeline as the band shared the stage at CBGB's with Talking Heads, Blondie, Patti Smith and The Ramones among others. They should have had much more commercial success. See No Evil is an awesome leadoff track!
Talking Heads meet the Strokes. In het begin vond ik het iets te wazig, maar afgezien van de typische new wave zang, zit het muzikaal wel lekker in elkaar.
Good from start to finish.
This album really surprised me. Loved the whole thing.
I've decided to get tested for Alzheimers. I was confused when I saw that this came out in '77. That is during my peak music discovery years and I have no recollection of the group. Even more confusing is that this is the type of music I would have really enjoyed at the time. I generally don't look at the wiki before I start listening and didn't this time. What I picked up from their music was a New Wave vibe with influences from the Rolling Stones, Bowie, and The Talking Heads. The wiki page confirmed the Stones vibe and called them an influence on the emerging New Wave sound. But does an experimental album from the '70s that came out before New Wave found its groove stand the test of time? In this case, most definitely. Normally, I could really like an album on my first listen, and then it could be a favorite after a number of listenings. This one could be a five star after listening to it a couple of times. But on a first listen, I can't say it's a favorite yet. But it's close. When I signed up for this generator, I was hoping to expand my horizons on good music from this century. Who knew that it would fill in a gap from my youth? Scale: 5 - My absolute favorites. 4 - Albums I like. 3 - I enjoyed listening to it but wouldn't seek it out. 2 - Didn't like. 1 - Absolute shit.
A great album. The title track is a classic.
I loved this album and band, reminded me of early punk except these guys can actually play!!
Very good, sounded like something I’d hear today
Such good jangly guitars and vocals, whole album is great
Me recuerda a Garage Rock con algo de Punk. Talking Heads Too. Suena a una banda en la que The Stokes estaría inspirada. Buen álbum.
Cool
Fun brit-pop
Another great band that used to be a blindspot of me. I was aware of their existence, and even though they seem to fully fit in my music tastes, I never listened to it. Luckily that's now changed and I've fully enjoyed this.
Love this album. So catchy and melodic while still being weird and interesting. You can hear their influence on so many other albums I love too.
A right on riffing classic - snotty at just the right amount and memorable hooks throughout … it feels a bit long because it is intense but it’s worth it.
Love me some Television and some Marquee Moon. Maybe this is in that same vein of Violent Femmes - it's deceptively simple. Nothing fancy about it, but all these parts work really well together. Even Marquee Moon, the song, at about 11 minutes - man, normally I would have no patience for that. But this one? It's all good.
Contrasting guitars, Verlaine's keening voice. Stunning title track. Absolutely classic New Wave album.
This sounds like music with no heavy influence, so original. Sounds like a New York dive bar, I loved it. Definitely adding this to my rotation.
Surprised at how many songs I knew off this one. Am I secret Television fan?
The track Marquee Moon is like listening to a Minnesota Long Goodbye - that shit just keeps going and going, oh my GOD.
Classic rock at its most classic
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Marquee moon, Torn curtain
This is a very interesting post punk album. While retaining the ethos of post punk, it contains a lot of blues rock elements that especially remind me of The Rolling Stones in vocal delivery. The music itself is fantastic and seems to predict some 2000s and 2010s sounds that we would later hear in British alternative and indie rock. It’s an incredibly contemporary album.
Always loved this album. New York art jazz punk from 1977. I love how they value the sound of each instrument especially between the two guitars. The melodies are so expressionate. Cruel but but all the other tracks (especially on side 2) are slightly in the shade of the magnificent title track. Strong 4
Wow, 77, still a great album to listen to.
Strong start, Friction and title track are very good could see them being adds after a second play through. I guess I don’t really know what “post-punk” means but was expecting it to be a bit louder, shout-ier.
Fantastic album.
Solid 4. Very unique sound, love the dual guitar work throughout. First few tracks were shorter and punchy which I liked. Highlight is still the title track, which is meandering and messy but a great sound.
Always was interested in checking this out, glad that I finally did -- really enjoyed it. Can definitely see adding this one to the collection
Wasn't familiar with most of the album, some interesting bits and would be worth another listen
Flott indírokk
I hear Built to Spill in in the title track, and Modest Mouse in Elevation. Clearly a foundational album for a lot of rock bands. I don't really think it hits its stride until mid-album.
This is great. I've been meaning to listen to it for a long time.
Haven't heard of them before (Oops). They rock. Love the guitar riffs
Fun guitar work, but a bit rambly at times
Never heard of this band but I was impressed. Not crazy about the singer. Reminded me of violent femmes but for some reason I didn't care for the voice here.
So this is why we cage the elephant and all the others or the vine?!?
Great start to finish, clearly a heavy influence on their New York brethren, the Talking Heads.
I liked the blend if punk and new wave sounds.
Weird, funky, and a little dark. I enjoyed it and thought it was fun. Overall not my thing
Liked it. Early punk without taking much from other artists of the time, but forming their own sound. 4/5
Got a rolling stones vibe
Un clásico, nada mas que decir, pensando en el bump a 9
New some of this but really enjoyed the album as a whole piece! Would definitely listen again. Enjoyed the variation.
I really like this album, a classic banger
This is the good side of 70s music but not the strongest example of it for me. Would happily have this come up on random shuffle of classic rock but probably won’t make the album itself a regular listen. Title track is a standout song for me. Second half of the album was pretty good. Might listen to whole album again after all.
Really shows it's roots, and is proud of it. Holds nothing back, pushes the ideas of rock music further, and keeps you engaged into every song the whole way through. What a classic record. 4.5/5

Fun
Really good classic 70s (post) punk rock album, great guitar and jazz(?) influence
Probably didn’t give this one a fair shake (it was on in the background while I was working) so I should revisit it, but it was still really good. Guitars and vocals both good. 4 stars
Now I get why The Strokes exist
What is this band and what is this album? I really enjoyed this, lots of great guitar melodies, grungy riffs, cool bass lines.
Very unique blend, well done album, cohesive.
Really good
This television set gets a great reception from me 👍🏾
Could be from an indie band of any era. Sounds old and modern at the same time.
really enjoyed this album! groovy with summer roadtrip vibes
Either delightful or an ice-cream headache, depending on your mood.
Never heard of this at all, but it's good.
4 dope
I had forgotten how long the title track is. Good jam.
curti, lembra um pouco the doors e rolling stones, mas mais na manha
Pretty sick, the title tracks is awesome Is it a strong 4, or did I just listen to it after hearing Pet Sounds? Solid 4
This album came out in 1977, which is just amazing. I wonder how many bands drew their inspiration from this album. 4.5/5
Really like this album
If you're expecting a slick, well produced album from a professional bunch with a classically trained singer and lyricist you'll give this a 1* However this is a raw, gutsy, passionate and quite varied affair. The title track at 10 mins veers around in multiple directions and doesn't tire although it's true some of the other tracks can be a bit samey. This influenced a huge number of better known bands to come which is a shame as they are simply compared to them.
A long favourite. The twin guitar arrangements on this album are milestones of rock guitar duos. Only gripe is that I've always wished wished WISHED the singer's voice was easier on the ears!
Enjoyable listen. Reminds me of the Talking Heads It's crazy how much post-70s rock music rips off sounds that were already explored in the 70s. So much 2000s rock that sounds like this
You can either manage his voice and the guitar twang or you can’t. I definitely vibe with this. Title track is killer. Didn’t know that Elevation was the basis of RHCP Californication! Some REALLY great tunes.
I was sure I'd listened through this record loads of times, but I have no recollection of Torn Curtain, so maybe I didn't. I've definitely heard the title track and See No Evil countless times. But yeh, great album, influential sound, bit too proggy at times, but I can live with that.
Nog eens een verrassing in de lijst! Leuke rock, toffe riffs. De zang is soms niet zo super, dus een klein minpuntje daarvoor
Just as a mosquito relieve no men, this one circles around looking for an opportunity to bite. I liked it, plenty of good hooks and got some vibes of The Strokes. ‘Elevation’ surely influenced The Cardigans’ ‘Lovefool’
A true classic in every sense of the word. A snap shot of the times and timeless all at once.
Highlights: Marquee Moon.
Probably my favorite CBGB era band...this album is a classic. Really enjoy hearing the influences they had on so much of the more modern music I enjoy. 4.5/5
Ahead of its time, there's still nothing quite like this. Favourites: "See No Evil", "Marquee Moon", "Elevation"
Will be revisiting
I need another listen but was pretty interested. Loved Elevation and Marquee Moon.
I like the Wiki notes about the debate on what genre this is. Basically, the argument is they can't be punk since they actually know how to sing and play their instruments. Too funny. To that point, the guitar playing - both solos and particularly the rhythm on the title track - is strong. I have a soft spot for punk from the CBGB days and might rate this higher if they didn't play so well. lol
I’ve always been a fan of the title track, especially the guitar interplay, though I would have preferred a radio edit, since I find the solo longer than it needed to be and not very inspired. So, I was happy that the guitar playing and arrangements were so outstanding on the rest the LP. They're quite intricate and no doubt out of place in 1977. They were like a pre-punk, post-punk band, or just a rock band I guess. Tom Verlaine has a pained and distinct voice that one can listen to for a full 45 minutes. 7 out of 10 for me.
This is a pretty good post punk record, but the title song Marquee Moon just elevates this album to iconic status. The guitar interplay between Verlaine and Richard Lloyd is just the stuff of legend. The song sounds like it ends 3-4 times but it just keeps going and building into sonic musical bliss. If there was ever a song that deserves the descriptor Fucking Epic, it’s Marquee Moon.
Pretty good. Never listened to them before. may do again
4.5/5
Lite The Clash stuk. Fan goa asså
It's good.
Pretty much a flawless L.P. Billy Ficca doesn't get enough credit for being a great drummer.
