It’s not Tommy. But it still slaps
An album I didn’t hear a lot when it was new, but it pervaded the culture. It’s a testament to their taste and style that 20 years later it still sounds completely modern. A truly great track 1 too
Not my cup of tea, but amazing in its own right.
As I’ve gotten older the most loved albums of people 10-20 years older than me have all sounded better and better.
IN the running for best side one, track one. Also, under my thumb is one of my favorite Stones tracks
I wish I didn’t dig these old classic rock albums as much as I do. I blame my upbringing.
4 stars
Ace of Spades deserves its spot near the top of any list. The rest of the album is mostly new to me.
This was fine, but I don't get it. Nothing made me want to relisten 3/5
Rubber Soul + Revolver is likely one of my oldest digital playlists. Way pre-dating actual Beatles available on streaming. 5/5
My favorite part of this album was the wikipedia article. And it's always nice to learn some origins of stuff that is just ubiquitous later. 3/5
Can you imagine this getting made today? IN a prison!? Such great story telling and just great short, snappy songs. 5/5
I don't think I'd ever listened to this entire album. Growing up with an old hippie record collector, that's rare to find for something from 1966. I had no idea this was pre-Gram Parsons either. Wikipedia got a workout for this album. I can appreciate the songwriting, but it's a bit too slow and plodding and 'samey' for me.
3/5
I keep a playlist of covers of The Weight. I think it is one of the best songs in history. 5 stars.
I enjoyed this a lot. 4/5
1 minute in and this is a vibe I can get used to. Big thumbs up. Reminded me of Portishead *a lot*
This was hugely popular during my last high school years. Other than what made it to mtv I am completely unfamiliar. 3/5
Had The Big Pink just a couple of days ago. Well I don’t like this one as much. Purely because it lacks The Weight 4
Enjoying this a lot. The Wikipedia articles may be my favorite feature of this site. They inevitably make me appreciate an album even more. 4
Not my thing. The wikipedia article didn't give me anything to glom on to to find something to listen for and/or enjoy on a different level. 2
I was 18 years old. And a college freshman. I mean I may know this album a wee bit. 5
I'm sure I listened to this long ago. Was pretty unclear on the history, so my favorite thing is again the Wikipedia link. This deserves a 4, but it is Clapton, so I'm giving it a 3.
I liked this. Took 2-3 tracks to find my ear and then as it ended I just played it again. 4
Felt very very 90s. I’d never heard it. Listened once and have no desire to hear it again. 2
My only complaint about this album is that it’s way too short.
Well after my regular music listening. Didn’t hate it. But it sounds very generic “rock”
3ish
I enjoyed this a lot. Had not heard it.
Stumbled on this the long way around. It quickly went to the top of my modern music ists.
Proto-punk. I didn’t hate it, but I should give it a listen when I’m in more of a mood for punk. 3
A singular talent. Man, what a loss. 5. Super catchy songs from top to bottom. Soulful, well produced.
I’ve never given Radiohead a fair shot. It’s always been fine, but I never make time to let it really draw me in. Still, this album ain’t my favorite of theirs in even my limited experience. Wikipedia tells me this is the one they released on the web, when the industry was floundering. That gets it an extra point from me. Just because it was an important moment.
I liked it. But it felt like elevator music. That's probably a comment on the success and likability of Paul Simon's music. But I'll never forgive him for taking Edie Brickell away from me. 4
Really liked this. Makes me want to research how people compare him to Dilla
My thoughts can be summed up with 2 words, *very* 90s. I only knew the LoveFool song before hand (Romeo + Juliet soundtrack got a lot of repeat listens from me) 3
Another new to me album. And serendipitous, I noticed a Deep Purple t-shirt in a tv show (from the 80s) the other day, and commented on it. I really only knew Smoke on the Water. Live show CDs are fun. I give this a 4 for 'fun' but a 3 for music itself.
Very Bowie. For obvious reasons. I dug this album, I was surprised to hear China Girl. 4
Not for me, but it's clearly well produced and designed to get you moving. 3
The wikipedia article for this album is *sprawling*. This lady has some fans.
Loved this album. The songs are a bit long, but it feels like a jam band concert, without having to deal with all the people. 4
I really enjoy Wilco. And the track California Stars has always been really enjoyable, but maybe I'm just having a bad day. A little too 'country', the lyrics failed to snag my attention. 3
It's dance music. I guess it's good for what it is?
3
3?
One or two fo the songs really grabbed my attention, but the rest I just wanted to end.
If you can seperate art from artist, 5. If you can't, 2, at best. But the art is -amazing-
This was not what I expected to find this morning. I really like Indian music.
The English lyrics were unexpected. 3/4
I kinda want to make this my first 1, but I'm sure it has redeeming qualities. My hopes were kind of dashed when I saw "noise rock" 2
songs from this album featured heavily in mixtapes from my early dating life. I cannot fairly evaluate it on its own merits. 5 stars.
I wish I liked listening to Neil young more. I like his songwriting.
Dug it. Nothing stuck out. Nothing made me wanna fast forward. 3
One of the innumerable albums I can tell is amazing, but I still wanna skip through the songs I've heard 10,000 times. 4
My wife is a huge fan of The Cure. I've always liked them fine, but don't think I'd ever heard this. It sounds like The Cure to me. No qualms. 3-4
I liked this a lot more than the Neil Young album from 3 days ago. 4
The durdling jam band esque songs grew on me through a 2nd listen.
3 There are some songs I really love the flow of, but I can't forgive the mid 90s
If I was a bit younger this would have been on repeat a lot. I had no idea she was one of the first MySpace music stars. Another wiki article that takes an album up a point. 4, but damn near a 5.
2. Meh. Seems like elevator music. (Which I am fine with sometimes. Today was just not the day for this pablum)
Oh look. It’s my favorite band’s favorite band. 3
Bad timing. I’d have likely enjoyed this more if it had come up at another time.
I vowed to never get an album someone else loved a 1. This is testing me. I did listen, hoping to find something I cared about. But nope I loathe this band and their music. 2, but really 1
What a relief from the misery that was yesterday's Metallica. 5 stars. And lead me down the wiki-hole of Nick Drake's life. I have to admit, I often confuse Nick Drake, Gram Parsons, Nick Cave and Nick Lowe. I have to consciously think through which is which whenever one of them come up. Every one of them has 5 star albums.
Pleasant, but very 'samey'
I think I've heard quite enough CSNY and their 'tree' of bands to last a lifetime.
3-4
I did not enjoy this as much as the previous Costello
I had only ever listened to 13 songs. This is a bit rough for the early morning when I normally listen to my albums of the day. But a solid 4 stars for the lunch break listening period.
This album has been my melancholy rainy mood album for decades. Every time I hear a simple guitar based singer/songwriter album this is what I compare it to in my head. The fivest of five stars.
I legit didn’t know this one. And my wife is a huge pixies fan.
Not my thing. The twang was too much to give it a fair shot.
I don’t have a score yet, but I hope these guys are all rich from licensing Song 2 to every-damned-thing for 25+ years now.
The beats are so damn smooth. The language is off putting. What it did to music for several years was too. 3 but it should be more.
I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. Brian Wilson makes good music.
I believe I can just flat out state I'm a fan of Afro-Pop. I do wish the songs were about half the length they are, though. That says more about me than the music though. At least what gets to American shores. Given that Femi is the child of Fela Kuti, that leads me to believe that Lagos's music scene is wild.
When I was a younger, more abrasive, man I often said Jazz was mostly musicians showing off to each other. This is the coolest, most charismatic guy reminding all the showboats that he’s better than they are. And does it with style. I don’t know enough music theory to talk about the music beyond “vibes” but this album definitely makes me feel in a way most jazz does not. 4
I can't believe they used that Hot Topic t-shirt graphic on their album cover!
This is one of those mixtape all-stars from my young adulthood. Instant 5 stars, because at least 5 tracks on it appeared on mixtapes I received or shared with people who were important to me.
If I were 5 years older I have no doubt I’d be a huge new order fan. This was nice. 3, but is very likely a 4
Takes some guts in 1972 to make the first track of an album the worst track. This is also the year I was born, maybe that's why the scattergories of this album didn't bug me at all. 3
His son’s album with Khraungbin prepared me for this. I flat out dig “world music” 3-4
Feels like brunch. I mean that in a good way. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed both listen throughs of this album. 4
This grew on me. Enough that I gave it a 2nd listen. Solid 3+
Welcome after 2 dud albums in a row.
I'm really surprised this is as late as '65. Enjoyable, but definitely only because of growing up with my step-father.
Man, I listened to this a lot. It might be 'basic', but it's definitely 5/5 for that time of my life.
I wanted to come into this with my normal baseline 'meh' toward McCartney's solo work. But half the tracks on this really really worked for me. I appreciate the pure "acousticness" of it.
Really tested my “won’t give anything a 1 star rating” resolve.
4 for the album. 1 for the lead singer.
A completely new album to me. I loved it.
A few songs on here I didn’t realize were Cream. Quite an album.
I listened to this a lot in the.mid 90s. Don’t feel like it’s aged well but it definitely took me back.
Saw these guys open for The Rolling Stones in 1989. I was working as a stadium vendor, and people assumed I had beer in my cooler, despite me being 17 and looking 12 years old. I made like $15, but got to watch most of their opening, and ALL of the stones. 4 stars.
The filler songs were really forgettable. A few great tracks though. 3.
One of my least Favorite 80s/90s REM album, and it's still a 4
Freedom ‘00 is a 5 star song and 6 star video. Nothing else on here really left its mark.
I can’t help it. I love this. Even as overplayed and over exposed as it is.. I mean I still listen to the Beatles too. 5
A surprise 4+ for me.
I remember the 80s pablum of pop R&B with mostly eyerolls. But as I’ve gotten older, I respect the craft of creating pleasant music highlighting a beautiful voice as an instrument a lot.
What a glorious weirdo. 4
Meh. Soooo overplayed in my last year of HS. At least the videos were fun to look at.
This was a pleasant new album. A bit over the top lyrically in a few spots, but that's hardly a complaint. 3
Really dug this. Might’ve liked it more if I understood French. Every world music selection to date has been nice. 4
I have an unreasonable hatred of this album. Through no fault of the musicians.
As a 21 year old white midwestern dude who spent a TON of his disposal income on CDs, I had opinions on music. I remember when I heard Method Man (the track), I realized it was 'different' from most of what we were hearing, and whoa, the words were fast. 4
Lord. This is still not my kind of music. 2
Pleasant, non-challenging. 3
I enjoyed it. But I remember nothing of it.
The birth of butt rock? Not for me.
I enjoyed 75% of this a lot more than I thought I would. but the parts that yanked me out of my enjoyment cost it a point.
I never expected this to be as old as it was.
4
Now that I am an old man, this speaks to me way more than it used to.
I absolutely love the song Tangled up in Blue. Like, 5 stars of love. But I spent my hard earned money in 1991 to see Bob Dylan live, and walked out about 6 songs into the set. Some artists are best appreciated in albums, not shows.
I mean. I’m 52 years old. This is the easiest 5 star yet.
Meh. Nothing burger of an album
2
I did not expect to cry this morning. 4
I have a feeling I’d have heard this if I were younger and hipper. Really enjoyed this.
I wish I didn’t love this as much as I do
Look, I had an Elvis wedding. I can't fairly evaluate his work. 5
I want a 3.5 star review here.
It's fine. I like it. I'm probably never going to play it over another Sonic Youth album though.
This is another 3.5 for me. It’s such a perfect slice of mid 90s
This was new to me. Really enjoyed it.
Another old country thing I should hate, but I just don’t. I’m a very bad critic.
This album was given to my step-sister on christmas day 1981. I got a copy of the Rolling Stones "Start Me Up" on 45. Proving that my dad and step-mom loved my sister more, or they got a deal on a 2 year old album. We were 9 years old.
We played both on our new portable record player a LOT.
This was a huge tonal shift from the previous album. I'm edging up a point, because I can tell if I listened through a few more times, in a few more moods, it would speak to me in totally different ways.
The title track is astounding. I enjoy covers. Not bad, but definitely 'of a time'
Slow country ballad stuff. Not bad really, but then track 8, Tennessee has a lyric, "You know Louisville is death" and that means this is my first 1. Don't disparage my home you jerkholes.
Thanks to the reviewer who directly linked to the youtube link. After a long stream of pleasant albums, this one felt like what I came here for. mind blowing, beautiful, out of my normal wheel-house. 5 stars.
This version of Working Class Hero is outstanding. Why d'Ya Do It is an A+ jam, and the lyrics are uhh, eye opening when you're sitting at your desk in an office building at 7:30am.
I liked this so much more than I thought I would.
A bit all over the place. I enjoyed some of it a lot.
Joe Biden's favorite Wu-Tang album is fantastic. (IYKYK)
My memory of the first time I heard the title track: on a trip to the boonies and my step father, a hippie era music nerd, cackles. He says, “the DJ has to poop” and explains that we will be hearing by this “song” for 20 full minutes.
My wife is going to be furious at me that I didn't give this a 5.
Sound and Vision is my favorite Bowie track.
I don't want to give it a high score, but I caught myself jamming out to it repeatedly. And I have a really good Rolling Stones concert story, so I give the old fuckers a break.
Well this didn’t age all that well. But 10 year old me would have given it 5 stars
There are several tracks on this album that make me tear up. Minor keys, pure poetry, I have to be in the right mood, but when I am, nothing hits like this.
The quality of this album is unmeasurable by its mere music. Living at the time was reward enough.
There are some really great songs on this, but Phil Spector deserves no more of anyone’s attention.
The opening track is a '5', and nothing else caught my ear.
I’m sure it’s great for what it is. I just don’t have the language to appreciate it
Completely unremarkable 80s brit music. Too much of this in the set.
“Muddy Waters invented electricity” — Willie Brown in the movie Crossroads with Ralph Macchio.
“Muddy Waters invented electricity” — Willie Brown in the movie Crossroads with Ralph Macchio.
This is the kind of album I expected to be on here more.
If I was being honest this album is a 5 for a certain time of my life. I’m glad I’ve moved past that time.
Haven't listened through yet, but I have a feeling this is going to be one of those "one really good track" albums.
I remember Bill Maher calling this album something like “music to sleep with your trophy wife to”
I loved the whole album then and I love it now.
I had an Elvis wedding. I can’t rate this fairly.
The side 2 medley is still one of my favorite chillout blocks of music.
I wanted to like this more, but the noise sections were just too much.
If ther first couple of tracks hadn’t put me so off I think I’d have scored this higher.
I wanted to like this so much more than I did.
Polly Jean and I go way back.
I was completely surprised by how much I grooved to this album.
I wanted to not like this (except for Supernaut, which I've always loved from the 1000 homo DJs cover)
But I legitimately enjoyed this album all the way through. Twice. I should probably apologize to my pothead stepbrother who was the foundation of my kneejerk reaction to all things Sabbath
The album is better than the rating. Much better. But I can’t separate the art from the artist when he’s still actively destroying his legacy and hurting people.
ugh. this takes me back to a time I was really unhappy with music.
I thought I would enjoy this more than I did. But the album felt too repetitive and timbalands style has not aged well at all.
