It's something bothering me about this album but I don't know what. Maybe the fact that it has nothing interesting and his voice is annoying. I've seen many albums by this dude included on this list and I just don't get it.

Fourth album by Elvis Costello and his crew on this list, and easily the worst one so far. I don't have that much time, or more likely willingness to check what is so different on Imperial Bedroom as compared to other records, but I was struggling very much to finish this. I have seen this album being described as baroque pop, which apparently is something I just don't get at all. Convoluted melodies, unpredictable vocal lines, you can tell Wainwright was inspired by this music. Which makes sense, because I had zero pleasure listening to his albums as well. Bottom of the barrell it goes.

There is a Neil Young amount of unnecessary Elvis Costello on this list, and this is yet another one that doesn't even have Alison on it. What a snoozefest.

No thank you. Too much blandery.

So far on this list I've rated Elvis Costello 3, 3, 2, 2, and this one, hopefully the last, can go right into that sequence with a 1. Probably really a 2, it isn't egregiously bad, but I sure didn't need to hear it, total snoozefest, and we probably could have lost three of the other albums, too.

Another Elvis Costello album just a couple of days after the first. I had to look it up and there's 6 Costello albums in total. The sooner I finish the better, this one was worse than This Year's Model. It's just so boring and it all sounds the same. It's nothing special about it, I can't imagine what has been left out to squeeze in 6 of Costello's albums.

Not a fan of his voice, feel like the singing is frequently off key. Emerick's stamp is evident in the recording/production quality though. Man Out of Time was a decent song, but wouldn't seek this one out again.

Rating: 2/10 Awful album. Vocally this album is absolutely horrendous, Elvis Costello sounds awful and sings like he's tone deaf. There are no memorable melodies and instrumentally it's very boring and forgettable. The vocals make this album almost unlistenable, it's shocking how bad the vocals are. Favorite song: Shabby Doll. Worst songs: everything else.

The vocals on this sound like something you'd find on a soundcloud track that has 14 listens and the person recorded on a cheap mic in their bedroom.

No, thank you. This is not an album that I think anyone has to hear before they die, and I couldnt even make it all the way through (I do make an effort to listen to every complete album on this list). It just sucks. 1/5

Grating. Annoying. Insufferable. I keep turning it down and down and down in the hopes that it will stop grating on my nerves SO DAMN MUCH. I am flabbergasted at the praise this album receives. Some songs sucked less than others, but goddamn. I watched the seconds tick down in the final song so I could be sure to turn it off before spotify subjected me to even more of this drivel. Music was fine, but the vocals. My god, THE VOCALS. This is the first album that had me rethinking my desire to complete this project. 1/5

Truly no aspect of this album seems great to me. The vocals, the band, the lyrics were all adequate I guess, but how this is on a list of greats, even a list 1000 long is beyond me. It is saved from a 1 star score only because the music isn't actively bad, but at least 1 star albums are memorable, this one I will forget as soon as I finish. No favorite track. Ok I actually changed my mind, the music is bad, 1 star.

Actually the most annoying album on here because EC has produced brilliant stuff over the years. This is total wank.

Wow. I did not expect to hate this, but I seriously hate this. What’s the vibe here, Circus rock? Sgt. Pepper’s bloated farts club band? What a tedious pile of crud. Skipped halfway through almost every song, and there’s no way in hell I’m making it through the whole album. Terrible!

How is there more Elvis Costello on this list? I'm going to preempt my review here by saying I reckon it'll be blandly clever post punk with a 1950s feel. I'll come back and say if I was right after listening. Well. The first track was a bit more interesting than I expected. But after that, it's pretty much everything I expected. Dull Dull Dull made worse by the fact it thinks it's interesting. I felt every one of its bloated tracks pass in real time.

For someone with a name as cool as Elvis Costello, his music just really falls short. He is the diet pepsi of Joe Strummer, just no piss and vinegar. I finally thought I heard a song I liked off this album, turns out it was just Spotify playing a deep cut Clash song after this album had finished

Didn't like the whiny vocals or the dull arrangements. This was a chore to get through and I was glad when it was over. If this is Mr Costello's best album then god help me when the others show up. Lots of bland songs of a similar length and nature, nothing stood out. Sometimes there were strange noises that only served to wake me up and check how much longer I had to endure before I could call this one done. As the last strings and brass plodded away, fading into the distance, I had an immense feeling of satisfaction, knowing I would never have to listen to this drek ever again.

God, I didn't expect much but this was even worse than expected. Why did anyone get excited about this guy?

That opener of Beyond Belief is one of my favorite Costello songs with all the hallmarks: great lyrics, bouncy guitar and a warm-up to a quickened pace. Of all the Costello songs that are out there-- many of which simply do not work, this is a great one especially because the vocals are tight and restrained. Almost predictably, the second track takes us to a Costello song that doesn't really work and isn't pleasant. And this is the big problem where the vocals-- all excellent-- don't seem to align with the accompanying music. Like, why did you opt for that wonky rhythm for these vocals where they are both operating at completely different tempos. Almost Blue is a great song and does come together nicely. Human Hands could be one of the worst songs I've ever heard. Like a haunted circus soundtrack on fleek. ...And this album leaves me as every other album in his catalogue does, wanting so much to like him, but finding myself hating it.

The was a big ol' yawn for me. Elvis sounds like he had a bad headcold half the time, the other half he sounds like he was trying to swallow the mic.

Costello just makes me feel sad. Maybe it's the voice. Another one I was hoping to enjoy and immerse myself in, but the mood just didn't work for me. It's fine for 'Shipbuilding', but I feel like I am past the point in my life where I enjoy suites of sad love songs. This is no doubt a very accomplished album, just not one for me.

3/29/2022 Today's Album: "Imperial Bedroom" by Elvis Costello & The Attractions - This album is pretty frustrating. The first 9 or so tracks show off the general theme of this track list, which is that some songs have a really fun energy that matches Elvis's blatantly horrible vocals. Whenever this guy has enough energy to sing a tight verse and chorus, it feels really fun and the 70s rock inspired instrumentals do numbers to lift up the lyrics in the songs mentioned in "Highlights", the other songs have just this unlistenable cheep feel to them, with each line feeling a little to long and all of the lyrics really bogging down what are admittingly decent instrumental performances. After these first 9 tracks, the view count on spotify really tanks and I can see why. It's pretty much more of the unlistenable stuff from the first half. Overall, I really wanted to like this project given some of the more promising tracks, but it just honestly should not be Elvis Costello leading this band. He is not a talented enough vocal performer to pull these ideas off in a listenable way. Score: 3/10 Just not very good Highlights: Tears Before Bedtime, Almost Blue, Human Hands,
