Reviews (page 5 of 14)
A little more unapologetic (intended) than the previous work, and I think it lacks a little of the power as well. Nevertheless, still a 5, if a low 5.
Buen álbum
Very good and very tortured not as good as Nevermind but still a 5/5
i mean it’s good
Truly an album everyone should listen to before they die. RIP Kurt you magnificent bastard
i don’t think i can give this album less than a 5, though it’s the hardest nirvana album to listen to. still nirvana though.
This album is a slight step back from Nevermind, but In Utero is still a 5! More punk and grunge it’s amazing and the bangers don’t stop. I grew up with this album, it’s a part of me. What a perfect listen. TBz 1. Rape Me 2. Pennyroyal Tea 3. Heart-Shaped Box 4. Dumb 5. All Apologies 6. Frances Farmer Will Her Revenge
Top 3 Songs: 1 - Pennyroyal Tea (9) 2 - Rape Me (4) 3 - Radio Friendly Unit Shifter (10)
marvelous
great listen
The best album.
A classic. So many memorable songs. Really love it.
This is prime grunge. More polished than Beach but still loud, crunchy and awesome. Another excellent album produced by Albini. This is an easy 5 from me
Classic
I love every song of this album! One of my all time favorites.
Classic. Some of my favorite Nirvana songs.
This honestly might be my favorite Nirvana record. So many gems on this one.
I really like nirvana there were some songs i didn’t like but i like the album over all
All Nirvana studio albums are deservingly 5 star albums, and I cannot wait to get to the Unplugged album on the list that is one of the greatest live albums of all time. And so it is also time for a song by song review. "Serve The Servants" - Not bad but just a week intro track for what lies deeper within the album. "Scentless Apprentice" - This is where I could see a lot of people turning off the album because they don't have the patience to go further, not a good song. "Heart Shaped Box" - Not only one of the greatest Nirvana songs of all time, just straight up one of the greatest songs of all time. Its musically speaking one of their more complex songs and lyrically is just a magnificently complex and painful love song. Or about cancer, but even if Cobain himself said that is what it is about, I just doubt it. "Rape Me" - Made sure to turn the volume down on this one before it started. Don't need the neighbors asking questions. It is an amazing song despite not being one you can blast in public. It is a classic feminist track at this point and while crude gets the message across. "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle" - Holy hell is that a long song title. This is certainly as much of a filler song as the two opening tracks, but certainly in a more classic Nirvana tone that is much more digestible. Very painful and somewhat concerningly relatable lyrics. "Dumb" - Whether you believe Cobain's interpretation of his song or the one his daughters interpretation 21 years after his death the meaning is sad and relatable. There are many people I can place in his description that I am just confused but oddly jealous of their contentment in life. But I personally relate to the outer view more always working to progress myself and become a better person every day. But it's not always easy sometimes I just want to space out and let the world go by around me and just be happy. His daughter's feelings towards the song are also relatable to the feelings of inadequacy I sometimes feel. A great song that has so much to think about despite its simplicity. "Very Ape" - It is filler, but pretty good filler at that. Nothing more to say really. "Milk It" - I think it must be the bass, but I just really enjoy this song. It doesn't quite feel like a Nirvana song but more of the later side of darker grunge music. I like that side of grunge too but usually think there is more separation between the eras. "Pennyroyal Tea" - Another great Nirvana sounding somewhat filler track. The vocals also somewhat remind me of Chris Cornell, though very much so same genre same era. "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter" - Just more filler. All I really have to say. "Tourette's" - This is what I call bad filler. But really the only bad song on the album. "All Apologies" - Maybe one of my favorite Nirvana songs. Just a great track. So beautiful and expressed with so much pain behind it. All around one of the greatest albums of all time and certainly very deserving of a place on this list. One of my all time favorites too.
Love Nirvana
OH HELL YEAH.
I feel like this is exactly what they were going for. They didn’t miss on one track. Perfect. 5/5
Genius album by a genius band. I have no faults. It’s perfect.
Here's a fun fact I probably shouldn't admit: I used to think Utero was a city in America, and that this was a live album. This is still an absolute kick in the balls of an album, more aggressive and weird and artistic than Nevermind; Cobain's recorded suicide note. If Nevermind reflected teenage angst, In Utero is about adult anxiety.
Banger
Classic
Easy listening
Hey guys, first day and a what a wonderful start. In utero 10/10 best song dumb
All apologies will never not be amazing
Self aware angst driven grunge for the mature rocker.
Nirvana at the height of it's power. Albini's production puts the band as they should sound on record, and it's so powerfully distorted and raw. This album straight up rocks and is an all-time favorite of mine.
Peak music
In Utero cements Nirvana as one of the most influential bands of the 90's. The sound of the record is much more raw and hectic than its predecessor. The guitars are rough, angry, and aggressive. The lyrics are dark and mesmerizing. The drums are heavy and scary. Cobain is easily the most famous grunge artist to have ever lived, and he shows just why on many of the songs on this record. Not only do his guitar riffs feel dirty and raw, he is also able to show a softer side when the lyrics call for it. Very inspired record and its always fun to imagine what would have been had Nirvana continued into the late 90's. Favorite Track: Heart Shaped Box Least Favorite Track: Radio Friendly Unit Shifter
How can you possibly follow up Nevermind? Do you remember what it was like when that came out? "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was EVERYWHERE. That was such a defining musical statement back then. I got the Nevermind album, but did not listen to it as much. This I listened to a _LOT_. So a few years later this comes out, and it's so... different, but utterly of the band. I remember not liking it as much at first, but a few listens later, I felt it was a musical evolution of the band. Thinking back, I could liken it to how "Angel Dust" was to Faith No More's "The Real Thing". "Serve The Servants" - I never liked it as the opener. But honestly I am not sure where there is a good place to put the song that fits the album. It kind of feels a bit like a b-side. "Scentless Apprentice" is credited by all three members, but is pretty noisy. Think it could have used a little more work, actually. "Heart Shaped Box" is just such a damn good song. It really shows you how far the band had come. I think at first I gravitated towards "Heart Shaped Box" as my favorite, but now it's "All Apologies." It makes me a bit sad, since it was the last song off their last studio album. "Rape Me" - ... I know what the song is, but it's still hard to sing along to. "Frances Farmer..." - interesting song, particularly once you know that the song is about the actress (Cobain's 'patron saint' as it were) "Dumb" - great song, both this version and the unplugged version. "Very Ape" - I always liked this tune, the crunchiness of the guitars, the line "If you need anything please don't hesitate to ask someone else first." "Milk It" - I always thought this song was a bit over the top, although I dug what they were trying for here. "Pennyroyal Tea" - I like the contrast of the two versions, this one and the unplugged version. "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter" - I liked the droniness of it. I imagine it being sort of done after a night of no sleep. "Tourette's" is very much a sequel to "Territorial Pissings" for me. Much shorter, though it doesn't need to be too long. Listening to a few different mixes of "All Apologies" it's obviously influenced by "Tomorrow Never Knows". Still it is probably one of their finest moments. I wish it wasn't their last. The album itself is a little uneven, but the great moments still outshine the previous album for me. So I am still going to give it 5 stars. Probably because I listened to it so much in my early 20s. A defining moment for me, musically, I think.
Like probably everyone, I own Nevermind. And probably like most, that's the only Nirvana album I own. Maybe that makes me like the guy they sing about in In Bloom. But I honestly never got into this follow-up; just didn't think it was as good. Re-listening to it, from the first two songs you notice how much harder (or as others say, abrasive) the sound is (I love the sound of Scentless Apprentice, though not the screeching vocals). That makes it more of a challenge to grasp the lyrics, which admittedly are just as good and thought-provoking as on their previous album. Cobain really was a masterful lyricist. And they show more depth in their musicianship. I totally hear Cobain's love of the Pixies in this album - in how it takes on a different sound than Nevermind, in how the songs differ vastly from each other, in some of the edginess. In retrospect, I really dug lesser knowns Frances Farmer, Very Ape, and Milk It just as much as well knowns Heart Shaped Box, Rape Me, Dumb, and All Apologies (all incredible songs). Even Pennyroyal Tea grew on me (until now I didn't understand why it was so beloved). I still think Nevermind is better, but In Utero is pretty damn good and a real close second.
10/10 LOVE how experimental it is compared to their other projects Nevermind is still my favorite but this is a close second
Love Nirvana, great album.
This album never fails to hype me up, bring me down, and leave me feeling overall better.
Relistening to old favorites reveals much about how time changes our perceptions of things. I found myself thinking more about the style choices, composition, and individual tones for instruments than I did when first listening. More analytical. And it's fascinating.
Like a delicious three-ingredient stew, Nirvana are masters of doing a lot with very little. Every song has an iconic hook and takes me on a journey from calm to LET'S GO over and over again. I've been quoting lines from Serve the Servants and Heart Shaped Box for nearly thirty years. In Utero holds up.
How do I objectively evaluate this album? I was 12 when this was released and it looms large in my mind. It's easy to forget great songs like Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge and Very Ape when they're rubbing shoulders with classics like Heart-Shaped Box and All Apologies. Incredible lyrics and tight, well-written songs abound in this 40 minute masterpiece.
A solid album
One of my favourites!!!!
It's hard to live up to the previous album Nevermind and In Utero almost reaches the same level. It's very different but I like it. It's too bad that this is Nirvanas final album because it would be interesting to see which direction they would take the band towards after In Utero. In Utero is very crisp and raw in a positive way. It's so easy to filter out all the sounds and just focus on for example Dave Grohls drums or Kurt Cobains guitar. It's a 5/5 for me even though I like Nevermind better.
I have mixed views on this album. It's purposely a lot more experimental than Nevermind, and initially this turned me off it. But listening to it now, the catchy melodies are there but they're mixed in with distortion and dissonance. In many ways I think of Nirvana in the same way as Nick Drake who also made only 3 nearly perfect albums that were equally diverse in their respective genre. So despite some initial misgivings, this is as essential as the other Nirvana albums. And I love the line 'teenage angst has paid off well now I'm bored and old'.
AAA
I love this album! I think it has a lot more personality than Nevermind, which is made possible by the vivid lyrics and passionate vocals. I also enjoy the combination of louder, angrier songs (Scentless Apprentice, Tourette's, etc.) and calmer, more reflective ones (Dumb, All Apologies). Favorite song: Very Ape.
I needed to be reminded how great Nirvana was 5.
Peak Nirvana. Peak Grunge. Incredible run of tracks from 'Scentless Apprentice', 'Heart-Shaped Box', 'Rape Me' to 'Frances Farmer...'
Without a shadow of a doubt Nirvana’s strongest record. Grunge really peaked with In Utero and everything grunge beyond this release is slowly fading into alternative rock to be honest.
Nirvana's "Nevermind" were famously produced "like pop songs". "In Utero" clearly aims to not be that. While the production on here is still great, the rhythm section is wielded as a cudgel, while Kurt creates a one-man wrecking crew of noise and abrasion. Even the most "poppy" song on here is not-safe-for-radio, the harshly named "Rape Me". Favorite tracks: "Tourette's", "Serve the Servents", "Milk It", "Dumb"
Raw, emotional, and excellent.
I can't objectively rate this album. It (and nirvana's other albums) are so routed in my teenage experience that this is soul music to me. The grinding guitars and wailing lyrics still send me into a state of peace, excitement that makes me feel how I figure I'm supposed to feel. This may sound ridiculous, but nirvana are my comfort blanket. Despite the bleakness, the mess, the misery. It helps me feel.
Raw, slick, classic 5/5 album
i love the noisier parts, radio friendly unit shifter is such a bop also, but i am no relistening this as much as nevermind
It takes a remarkable talent to build on the success of an album like Nevermind, but these guys managed it.
Fuckin classic
ahead of their time, aged very well. definition of teenage angst
Having acquired many grunge CDs through the Columbia House Music Club in the 90s, it is a bit of a mystery to me that I remained so unfamiliar with Nirvana. Perhaps even more perplexing is that I have lived in Seattle for nearly 25 years and still am only familiar with their bigger hits. Listening to Nirvana is something I always felt I though I needed to do. In Utero is the first Nirvana album I have listened to. I knew "Heart-Shaped Box" and "All Apologies" - both great songs. The rest of this album is great! Definitely lived up to my expectations. Really glad to finally be addressing a glaring omission in my musical experience.
This album holds a special place in my life as it was the gateway to everything else music wise (and as a consequence highly formative. Eleven years old mw - sneaking up to the family stereo, nicking the CD from my sister’s collection when nobody was paying attention and listening to ‘All Apologies’ on repeat brought out the love of music in me. I still remember the day when I first saw the words ‘Nirvana’ etched out on a wall in my then new school - and being surprised that someone else out there also liked the band as for me, liking this album in the beginning was a very private and personal matter. So much so, I never really bothered with or knew ‘Nevermind’ until years later. Nirvana, started and ended with this album, and to me, it’s there best album. How does it hold up, however, now in the context of the all the other records I’ve listened to since? It’s still a wonderful journey - as dark as an abandoned formeldehyde-scented anatomy lab, at parts grotesque, at parts gentle, at parts ahead of it’s time both musically (Steve Albini’s touch/non-touch really lets this album transcend the era it was recorded in), and thematically (“Frances Farmer…”, “Pennyroyal Tea”, even the much less soft-touched ‘Rape Me’ - still relevant, almost even more so nowadays), while still leaving some space for pop gorgeousness in “Heart Shaped Box”, and “All Apologies”. Yes, it does hold up. It’s amazing through and through, and I’m grateful to this record for the world it has opened to me.
The songs are loud, poppy, urgent, timeless. The collection is as artistic as it is consumable making it the pinnacle of the bands career. You could even argue this was the pinnacle of punk rock. Listen to the Albini version unless you're a Radio Friendly Unit Shifter.
Love the raw production on the album. Was a treat.
A tougher more difficult and uncompromising album than Nevermind, but ultimately just as good. Contains classic Nirvana tunes like Rape Me, Pennyroyal Tea, Heart Shaped Box and has Cobain written a better song than Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle? May take longer than Nevermind but take the time and you'll discover an album even richer and more carried than that classic. 5 stars
El disco entero me gusta. Fue un bombazo tras el Smell ... Escucharlo entero en orden me sigue pareciendo increíble y si tengo que destacar las canciones por separado casi todas son de 10, desde el principio con «Serve the Servants» pasando por «Heart-Shaped Box», «Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle», «Dumb», «Very Ape», «Pennyroyal Tea», «Radio Friendly Unit Shifter» hasta acabar con «All Apologies».
All Nirvana albums are 5-star albums. All of 'em. This is probably the raunchiest-sounding mainstream album ever released. The opening lick of Serve the Servants is so vile I used to turn my stereo down for the first few seconds of the song. After that, though, the lazy guitar lack drags the listener along through a hard rock sludged out fuzz fest. And the drums on Scentless Apprentice! In Utero is chock full of ultra-abrasive super fuzz and a few surprisingly gentle singles in Dumb, Pennyroyal Tea, and All Apologies. Rape Me and Heart-Shaped Box fall somewhere in the middle. Hard drivers, but not terrifying to casual listeners at the time. They would both be too abrasive for mainstream today. The entire album was recorded over 2 weeks with producer Steve Albini, using the wall-of-sound techniques pioneered by Phil Specter. It's mostly live with all players playing in a room full of mic'd amps. It makes for a truly brutal sound. Grohl's kick drum sounds huuuuge. I love this record.
Pretty undeniable I have to admit
An obvious classic, great production.
Heart shaped box, pennyroyal tea, all apologies. Great album. Last nirvana album.
The best Nirvana album. While being darker and more weird (there are some odd jazz rhythms and noise on here) Cobain's knack for pop makes it all listenable and even enjoyable. I often wonder what a further ablum would have sounded like - even more Albini brutalism? Even more musical diversity. It's a shame we'll never find out.
Awesome album, a favorite of mine in my teenage years! Some real grunge classics on here.
Uno de mis discos fundacionales. Y encuentro que es mejor que el Nevermind. Auguraba una nueva dirección para Nirvana y es una tremenda frustración no poder siquiera ver qué nos deparaba Kurt.
I really love this album a lot and listen to it regularly. One of my favorite albums and bands of all time.
Tää on varmaan grungen huippuhetki tai varmasti ainakin yksi niistä. Kovaa bläsäystä eikä yhtään huonoja biisejä. Yritän antaa oikeesti hyville levyille enemmän vitosia nii lähdetään tästä. 5/5
Good strange stuff
Probably the Nirvana album I've listened to the most. Amazing front to back. The drums to start Scentless Apprentice is one of my favorite moments. There isn't much to harp on here. Great album.
I wish that I was around when grunge rock happened. Of course Nevermind is their masterpiece, but this album has also some great songs on it. Really enjoyed the album and discovered some new songs too. Favourite songs: - Heart-shaped box - Rape me - Frances farmer will have her revenge on Seattle - All apologies
One of my all time favorites, Kurt Cobain at his gloomiest and angriest, what else can I say?
One of my go-to albums when I am in a mood. Nirvana + Steve Albini is a killer combination. 5/5 stars
Plein de grr, de souffrance, de son gras. Cobain au sommet de son art de compositeur. Pas de mauvaise pièce et plusieurs morceaux iconiques.
some nirvana is overrated but not this shit
The peak of grunge and one of the definitive albums of the 1990s.
5 🌟
Gets better through time. Great record
Teen angst has paid off well Now I’m bored and old
Amazing band that was constantly evolving and getting better. Shame that this was their last album.
A masterpiece. I wish I could have heard Kirk’s follow-up.
There are 2 types of people - Nevermind people and In Utero People. I plant my feet firmly in the In Utero Camp. Brilliant, and reminds me of driving around in my first car with this in my cassette player.
Just as good as my teenage angst remembers! It gets the nostalgia 5/5
Excellent album
A masterpiece, maybe less raucous and brash than its predecessor Nevermind, but nonetheless heartfelt and passionate
Fucking eh, what a great album.
Cobain is one of the few lead singers that I know, that can't hit notes, but is still an amazing lead. Incredible album.
Very good
In 1993, it was a different world. We didn't have cell phones or the internet (well, most of us). We didn't have Google, and we didn't have Genius for looking up song lyrics and meanings. We had the liner notes, pulled out of the jewel case and poured over for hours, trying to make some sense of the mystery. I can't decide if we were better off trying to decipher Kurt Cobain's obtuse lyrics, or better off now having so much information at our fingertips. Every magazine story about Nirvana, each video interview with Cobain, even Courtney Love's tweets to Lana Del Rey in 2012 about her vagina's role in Cobain's songwriting. And here we are judging this content 30 years later, 30 years filled with more life experiences and cultural changes that Cobain never experienced. How would he reflect on this music decades later? How would Nirvana's music have evolved? We'll never know, but we do have this amazing time capsule of an amazing band at their creative peak, raw and angry and vulnerable and passionate, screaming until their voices and instruments broke. It's pretty awesome.
HEY
Everyone has a collection of music that has helped them through some hard times and helped shape them. Nirvana features heavily in my collection. Tourette's is maybe the only song on the album that I wouldn't consider a banger as it feels almost too volatile, explosive and I think there's too much going on. I would however argue that it achieved exactly what it set out to achieve so I can hardly fault it. I may have only been 1 when this album was released but In Utero is timeless. 5/5.
Now we're talking! The best Nirvana album, sorry, Nevermind, which showcases a lot of the band's best tracks as well as having huge significance to me personally. Whilst the highs of Nevermind might have a slight edge on those of this record, In Utero has a stronger complete track list and is a stellar example of 90's grunge from the band that brought the genre out of it's niche and exposed it to the masses.
Grunge will always have a special place in my heart, it was really the entryway for metal for me, and Nirvana played a big role in that. This is Nirvana at their best. 4/5 Album.

Heard it! Love it!
You gotta be kidding me, two of my favs in a row! Here's a meme for you: Слушает In Utero Мальчик: Rape Me, Heart-Shaped Box Мужчина: Milk It, Radio Friendly Unit Shifter, Very Ape
Might be my favorite album of all time.
3/3 студийных альбомов Нирваны.
A grunge manifesto in disgust for corporate and popular society at large. Cobain's seething delivery and simple yet evocative guitar lines underwrite not only an indictment of Nirvana's success post-Nevermind and Kurt's feelings of exploitation ('Rape Me', 'Radio Friendly Unit Shifter'), but a continually relevant vision of the sheer vapidity of modern society ('Very Ape', 'Dumb'). Shifting between pure discord and true beauty ('All Apologies' is and always will be a stunner of a track), this LP is not so much rage but cynicism sonified, one final wail against the cesspool of American society before finally giving in.
It’s amazing how influential nirvana became after essentially only 2 albums but it’s understandable. Both this and nevermind are all time greats for good reason, not much more to be said. Nevermind is still better in my opinion. Fav songs: heart-shaped box, rape me, all apologies
I was 13 when this came out and it was a big part of my life. I even have specific memories of times and places I listened to this album. I think about it every time I pass through Cannon Falls on 52.
One of my favourite albums of all time
An absolute classic. Heard it a million times, happy to platter it up a million more
Shot
Rating: 9/10 Best songs: Serve the servants, Heart-shaped box, Rape me, Dumb, Very ape, Tourette’s
My favorite Nirvana album. In my estimation the best Nirvana album. It’s incredibly powerful.
Great Album.
After being quite disappointed with this album after it came out, it has really grown on me quite a bit. This album is fantastic.
Not the same impact as Nevermind and I remember a slight disappointment at the time, but still a classic.
Beautiful early-to-mid 90s memories with this one. Teenage years soundtrack. I would often swing back and forth between more extreme metal and grunge/alt-rock. I preferred this one to Nevermind as it sounds somewhat rawer, but I'd give 5-stars to both of them (and if you ask me, my actual favorite is Incesticide...).
9.7 Impossibke to separate from tennage years.
Escuchar este disco me hizo sentir como el meme de “How do you do fellow kids?” Y aunque el grunge nunca fue mi vibra, sí disfruté mucho esta escucha
Que honor haber nacido el mismo año que este disco.
A formative album for me. I actually don't listen to Nirvana that much anymore... but still a classic for me.
Simply sensational. Even after all these years. Almost every song absolutely kills it and it still feels as raw and as edgy as back then in 94.
Always a good narrative. Union of all of the good things coming out at the time. Penny royal tea and Heart-shaped Box favourites
One of the best albums of the early 90s. All Apologies, Heart-Shaped Box, Pennyroyal Team, and Dumb are great songs. It just never gets old. Nirvana just takes you back to your youth and the music has aged really well. It was so ahead of its time, but at the same time, very much a product of the 90s.
Arguably nirvana’s best album. Shows a ton of growth musically and lyrically from Nevermind. The biggest shame is not knowing what would have come next. Highlights: Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle, Milk It, Dumb
Farmer Francis will have her revenge on Seattle. The first nirvana album i got into, so it will always be my favourite. It’s a pretty flawless album.
A couple radio friendly singles mixed by Scott Litt (REM) + that classic Albini engineered abrasiveness = a timeless classic. No apologies for giving this 5 stars babyyy!
Yummy needles
Nirvana's best studio album
Obscure gem
I've never listened to Nirvana before. It's really astounding how it grabbed my attention (I'm listening to this at 2am after working late) because holy shit I really savoured this like I haven't for other music in the past. Goddamn
The first time I listened to this I thought I was about to listen to a live album and that Utero was the name of a city. I'm glad it wasn't.
Masterpiece. A hypnotising, singular and wonderful experience. A one of kind album.
Epic
Todas las canciones, memorables. Un gran disco
I was surprised how it still sounds good.
5 star for Diogo, my bro!
Classic
ABSOLUTE BANGERS ON THIS ALBUM!
¡Buenísimo!
Great Nirvana album. Not their best, but really good. Can hear some Food influences as well in some of these songs. Great to see the bridge between.
Pretty good.
Great album. Sonically and lyrically it is all there. Maybe one missed song but still beautiful
3.5. Despite some great songs there are too many not great songs.
Aunque lo había escuchado de manera lineal y aleatoria, es un album que toda una generación sintió y gritó al igual que Nevermind. Personalmente es uno de los que entra en mi top, Kurt en su mejor momento lírico y compositivo.
7/10 Maybe a hot take but I didn't love this as much as I assumed I would. There's a couple songs on here that I genuinely thought weren't all that, but overall, still great. the bangers speak for themselves.
4/5
Not a fan of all the songs, but the great songs are exceptional and capture our generation. 4.5
Always happy to listen to a Nirvana album. The grunginess really matched my mood when I was listening so I appreciated it. In terms of rating I think it’s definitely up there but this album didn’t do it for me as much as Nevermind did. Still bangers though and will continue to be on my playlist for sure.
Pensaba que me iba a gustar mucho menos, pero esta bien. Es muy punki, pensaba que el grunge sonaba de otra manera.
Didn’t have time to write a full review, but I like this album! Thought it had some really good moments. Heart shaped box is a great song and it reminds me of a mutual who passed away recently. Nirvana is always going to be a solid listen. 4/5⭐️ 184/1089
They keep it pretty adventurous and out there, causing the songs that reign it in from the uber-grungy to stand out the most to me. Highlights: "Heart-Shaped Box", "Very Ape", "All Apologies"
The singles off this album are really good, and kind of carried me through the more “abrasive” pieces. Overall and after reading about the creation of this album I have an appreciation for it as a whole.
For the most part, I really liked this album, save for Cobain’s intermittent screaming and screeching. I love All Apologies. I wish that I would have given this band a chance back in the day, because I have really enjoyed what I have heard from this list. I am giving this one four stars.
It's a Nirvana album. Deeply influential, iconic songs capturing the zeitgeist. But it isn't Nevermind.
my first nirvana album on this list. i’m stoked. heart shaped box. the greatest love and sex song ever written. rape me is such a sad song. so many good good songs. i’m stressed out at work and this is perfect. driving during my second listen. feel so badass. ———POEM——— lover’s gift wrist watch lost at the Thai diner’s washroom he hated me anyway my brother showered with water he rejects nearby I choke on patterns that keep me tripped I promise my body is a temple the same one we visited that day so, why does it shake this way? nightmares on nightmares for years nightmares i never share- till recently a friend that I almost lost and then really wanted to names they hurt me - always have but not anymore not in any way
Great record, kind of depressing to listen to. Favourite Track(s): Heart-Shaped Box Least Favourite Track(s): Tourette's
This isn't another Nevermind, but it doesn't have to be. It's dirty and gritty, but the songs are still great, even though maybe not as suitable to play them on the radio.
All Apologies 💔🥀
Great album
Not as good as the other two Nirvana albums here. You can hear Cobain’s depression coming through, which leads to a lot of good stuff but also a few weak points. I do think the best version of Nirvana after this would have been with Kurt and Dave as co-leads.
Hørt. Skide godt.
good!
Enjoyed. Much more influential than I realised. I could hear crooked vultures, Alice in chains, QOTSA in everything. Way more diverse than I realised. Ironic that a band that challenged the nature fame and musical popularity is still so objectively framed by charts and ultimately pigeonholed into a defined sound with so many left field tunes that absolutely fuck sitting on their albums. I’m late to every party so far. I know
Love Nirvana: Heart-shape box, rape me, all apologies are amazing. Scentless apprentice sounds like a cat being killed (in a bad way). Just 4 stars because i dont think it is their best album
It's hard to judge a nirvana album against any other album that's not a nirvana album. As such, this is simply their 3rd best effort. Peak grunge, but not peak nirvana. First 5 songs- a masterpiece. The rest of the album gets as bipolar as a gen xer on lithium.
Yep still a classic, not my favourite grunge but it hits as strong as ever. Standouts are Heart-Shaped Box, Rape Me, Dumb and All Apologies.
Monumental grunge record. Of course it is far away from Nevermind but this is very good album
Groundbreaking album but Im not a huge nirvana fan, they have all of the elements of music I like but just a little too abrasive for the most part
I knew 4 songs going in, but hadn't heard the rest of the album. Some of them were a bit too noisy for me but the other ones I really liked.
It's not Nevermind. But it's still great.
I'm still debating if I like this more than Nevermind but it's a solid album in either case.
Half beautiful, half Angry Young Man Yells at Cloud. On a personal enjoyment level this would get a 3 from me. But, personal enjoyment aside, this is a bold artistic statement at a point when they could have eased into some more stadium friendly pop rock. So, extra points for that ******************************************************************************* --Serve the Servants...kind of lethargic for an opener --Scentless Apprentice...it rocks but we're lacking the pop sensibilities of Nevermind. probably intentional --Heart-Shaped Box...dark stuff --Rape Me...simple but effective --Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle...Kurt's unmistakable scratchy snarl is the star here --Dumb...perfection --Very Ape...solid rock groove --Milk It...quiet loud quiet loud Pixies thing. meh --Pennyroyal Tea...good song but overshadowed by the Unplugged version --Radio Friendly Unit Shifter...hey, this isn't radio friendly! Kurt, you scamp --Tourette's...also not radio friendly. Krist and Dave kicking ass --All Apologies...maybe the most depressing and appropriate album closer ever
Better than Coldplay
Still good.
1. "Heart-Shaped Box" 2. "Rape Me" 3. "Pennyroyal Tea"
4.2/5
the first album generated for me. ive heard this before, rated it on here, and grew up listening to some of these tracks a lot. heart shaped box being on guitar hero 2 was a big one for me. i had no idea who steve albini was when i was first hearing these tracks. nowadays i consider him to be somewhat of a musical genius, especially for producing, which he does a fantastic job of on this album. u can definitely feel his influence but it also feels like a nirvana record. thats the key, really. favorite tracks: Dumb, All Apologies
How do you possibly follow up one of the biggest records ever made? You make In Utero? Where you ramp some things up and tone other things down.
Tries a bit too hard. Bleach is better.
Considering how great the best tracks are, the fillers are dirge
Harsher than nevermind that's for sure. Feels like Kurt is channeling Frank Black on Tourettes. I think I like their other two albums in the list more (and Bleach too... Where the heck is that?) Still, my least favorite Nirvana is still pretty dang good
Fascinating, good start to the challenge. Some of the vocals weren't my cup of tea, but some were pretty good. The songwriting is really good and the guitar tones are great. Standout tracks: Save the Servants, Pennyroyal Tea, All Apologies. 7.5/10
I did listen to this a long time ago. Still, it’s a new experience listening to this as an adult with different experiences in life. Heart-Shaped Box is an all time favorite of mine, and it holds up after all this time.
Not my kinda music, but not bad music so wont give it a bad rating
Not as polished as Nevermind, but that’s sort of its charm. It’s a very good listen. I really like the abrasive sound of this one
Replaying this made me realize I'd romanticized it a little bit. There are definite highlights (Rape Me, Frances Farmer, Pennyroyal) but also a ton of skips that I'm just not crazy about.
Favorite track(s): Heart-Shaped Box, Rape Me, Dumb, All Apologies Heard before Previous rating: 8/10
(5/7) a few good ones and then some noise
A super raw fuck you, that intentionally alienated many of the new fans they picked up with the Nevermind behemoth! It's not an easy listen, but it's power is undeniable. Kobain's lyrics were never sunshine and light, but things do get very dark on this album. Way less anthemic singalongs, on this one, just quite a lot of pain. The quiet loud, quiet loud dynamics of the Pixies, are turbo charged here and I felt kind of emotionally worn out by this one by the end. Not an every week record though!
I do love this record. It is iconic in so many ways. Yet, I don't know that it reaches 5-star status for me. Not sure why.
4/5
92/100
Not into this quite as much as nevermind. Some cool stuff, but it's also pretty repetitive and uninspired at times.
I haven't listened to this album in its entirety until now but I've realised I've heard more songs from it than I thought I had. Enjoyable album.
I didn't give this as much attention as the other albums when it came out. Definitely some great work, makes me want to have a Coors Light with Dave and talk about the madness this must have been. 4.5
I’m a sucker for a Nirvana Melody: (see verses of Dumb, All Apologies). They’re always doing it and I never get tired of it. I could listen to like a thousand songs that do this and I would get them mixed up and like all of them.
'teenage angst has served me well, now i'm bored and old...' what a way to start off possibly the most eagerly anticipated album in alt-rock history!!! it's hard to believe they were able to follow up Nevermind with an album just as good (if not better), but they pulled it off. the hits are hits, obviously, but i love the noisy shit they get into on milk it and tourette's. it's trite to say it but god i wonder so often what they would've done if kurt hadn't died
First Nirvana album!!! (Ironic cause this was their last) This was a fun album because it doesnt have a lot of recognizable songs (i only knew Heart-Shaped Box and Dumb) so I didnt have any expectations and was treated to an aggressive and energetic Nirvana sound 4/5
Althought some songs dont hit like the heavy hitters, overall an amazing rock album that definatly stands out and changed the landscape.
An interesting album, due to its context and contents. It's context is well known, so I'll leave that aside. A lot more 'rough' than most Nirvana songs that I have heard, which makes sense. The more poppy numbers do better with a general audience. Still I like most of the songs on this record. They are not just rough, but they carry emotion and have catchy riffs. Some songs Scentless Apprentice and Tourette's are not my thing, but hey they are good artistic expression. I have added a few songs to my playlists and I found it an interesting listen front to back. Nirvana lives up to the hype. 8.5/10
Ugh, now when I hear "All Apologies" I think of Sinead O'Connor from Universal Mother. Otherwise, we can be assured, many vocal cords, guitar chords, and snare drum heads were harmed in production of this record.
Great album!
wowowowo
Decent but only flashes of the magic of Nevermind.
Nevermind is better.
nirvana realmente é bom ne?
The contrarian in me wants to claim this is better than Nevermind. It's not, but it's still damn good.
Years ago, I accidently saw Nirvana live when they joined a Mudhoney and Tad (remember them?) Subpop showcase tour. They were just starting out then and months later my friend reminded me of the fact that we had seen them with the immortal line, don’t you remember, they were the only band we thought were any good. And that’s Nirvana, their excellence really shone through even from the beginning. But I hated grunge so decided never to listen to them. In latter years, seeing them on the TV I truly realise how stupid that decision was. Thanks to the Generator I get to eat humble pie (again) and get to listen to this truly amazing album which moves seamlessly from grunge to punk rock with deep lyrics and beautiful melodies.
I like Heart-Shaped Box and the rest :3
My personal preference is not this sound but beyond that it’s a masterclass of an album
Listens: 3 Standout Tracks: Heart-Shaped Box, Dumb, All Apologies Back-to-back Courtney Love (Hole) and Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) from the List. Weird coincidence? I listen to my music primarily one of two ways; though Bose QCs when I am working, and through Shokz bone-conducting headset when I am just around the house, commuting to work, preparing to go to bed, etc. My Shokz get a lot of use and have drastically increased the amount of music I listen to. There's a point to this. This album's fidelity seems... off when using the Shokz, even though this is the 20th Anniversary Remastered edition. Obviously, there's a significant difference between the quality of the sound between Shoks and Bose QCs, but on this album in particular, where the sound can be washed out, and Cobain's usual lack of articulation in his singing really contributes to a poor experience listening on the Shokz. So much of the grungy, grimy sound just does not come the bone conduction well. But, I digress. This album is a mixed bag for me. It's good, but it just doesn't get to the same heights as Nevermind in my book. Nevermind is banger after banger, while this album has a few excellent tracks spaced out with a handful of perfectly adequate, but otherwise not particular noteworthy tracks. This is evident by the disparity in the listen counts across the album. Popular songs are in the 70-500 million listens, vs the less popular songs, which barely scratch 10 million. To be clear, this is a popular album. Nirvana is as popular today as it ever was. Compare this album to some of the shit you get on the List; album that have been out for 40 or 50 years that barely scratch 50k listens and it's clear that Nirvana is here to stay. I'll close with the fact that the album cover is dope as hell.
people either love or hate this one huh? personally, im a bit indifferent. its too long, doesnt hit the greatness of nevermind, doesnt have the raw and angry feeling of bleach. this imo is the weakest of nirvana, but yet still hits DIFFERENT. love it. and hate it. heart shaped box is a stone cold banger alwayz
Not my favourite Nirvana album (which is Bleach), but hey it is Nirvana and not Nevermind, so 4 stars
It takes a lot of effort to sound like you're not making an effort. Top job, lads.
Can not join the increasingly loud group of the oh so edgy music nerds that call this better than Nevermind or Bleach, but at least they did not try to do more of the same. They were a good band with real artistry! Who knew. I do think "written as a reaction to" records have a ceiling but I'm not feisty enough to really test out that hypothesis.
I really liked this album. I had listened to this before and had purchased it. Upon re-listening, there are a couple songs that I didn't care for. Still a very good album and one that I will listen to again
Kurt Cobain really was one of the coolest people to ever live. worked with William S Burroughs and Steve Albini while being a household name. reshaped the world of popular music too. and this album shines as Nirvana's greatest achievement. i, much like everyone else, love love LOVE Heart Shaped Box, but the real appeal of this is just how intense and uncommercial it is. Scentless Apprentice is full noise rock and it fucks so hard. this will filter a lot of people, obviously, but if you like this, you really owe it to yourself to look further into the noisy and experimental rock this album takes a lot from. deserves to be one of the 1001? yes, even if it's largely here by the virtue of it being by Nirvana
I remember being super pumped for this to be released and then being a bit disappointed that it was not Nevermind 2. Not much has changed 30 years later.
tengo demasiado soft spot por Kurco por cuando me vi el documental
A good listen, but didn't enjoy it quite as much as I expected to
A good listen with some good hits. Didn't deliver all the way through.
Very good, but not quite as consistent as Nevermind. My wife did not enjoy.
Brutal, not as radio friendly as
can't go wrong with this. a lot different from the polished first album.
Although a huge success I found this album to be really abrasive and that's after some songs were remixed. The subject matter on Cobains physical and mental health are unappealing. The bands musicianship is very good however. I did like All Apologies Rape Me and Heart-Shaped Box. Another unfortunate loss in the world of music.
this is the best nirvana album in my opinion, although i don’t really need to listen to them anymore. the songs are more polished but also less polished than nevermind which i think is really good
Legendary
Finally I actually get around to listening to nirvana. I'll say, it's interesting to listen to the swan song first. The album opens with one of the best lines I've ever heard, that being "teenage angst has paid off well, now I'm bored and old," off of the song "Serve The Servants." It's an excellent, bombastic opener that moves into the angry, screamy "Scentless Apprentice." Very well produced so far (of course it fucking is, it's Albini). It also really beats you over the head with how dark it is; the drums work with the guitar to make something insanely noisy and weirdly macabre for such a "classic 90s rock band" y'know? "Heart-Shaped Box" is obviously superb, no notes. "Rape Me" frankly is kinda wack. Like I get it, but I can't really follow the "plot" of the song, and it just does't really do much for me. I don't fuck with it too much. "Frances Farmer..." is incredible, however, so it's all good. "Dumb" is actually incredible as well, maybe my favorite song so far. "Very Ape," though short, is really awesome. "Milk It" is pretty cool too. Pretty much all the songs from then on are great. “All Apologies” is definitely my favorite. I will say though, this album really doesn’t live up to its legend. Like, it’s one thing for an album to have a legend of being a certain way, like how (depending on how much of an ass you are) you might say that either “The Moon and Antarctica” or “Good News For People Who Love Bad News” would be the point in which Modest Mouse sold out (they never sold out in fact, but that’s beside the point). But when an album has built up some mythology of being one of the best albums of all time, such as this one has, and it turns out to be… pretty cool at best, I can’t help but rate it worse based on the fact that I feel underwhelmed. None of these songs changed my life, or even really defined my day interestingly. I really like a lot of these songs. I think Kurt Cobain is a really awesome and super interesting dude. But… perfect? Among the best of all time? Worth buying on a CD? Well, that last one, maybe. But my point is… this is pretty awesome and not much more. 8.5/10
I was early in on Nirvana with the Sliver 12”, but checked out prior to this coming out. Hearing it for the first time - singles aside - I enjoyed it. I like that they made the follow up to Nevermind THEIR way, when it could have been a glossy, commercial freight train. The production on On Utero is superb. Steve Albini was a god. This deserves a 4.
Love Nirvana; realistically a 4.5, but edging toward the lower half
A classic followup to Nevermind which made their sound a little more raw. I experienced this through the singles until a few years ago, when I finally listened to the whole thing. So it's hard to stand up to Nevermind which I listened to repeatedly for a long time, but I really appreciate the authenticity of the sound.
Well it's not Nevermind, that's for sure. Nirvana's third album, and the follow-up to Nevermind, was always intended to be raw and heavy. They used a producer in Steve Albini who was known for punk rock and aimed to sound abrasive. They succeeded. The highlights for me are Heart-Shaped Box, All Apologies, Pennyroyal Tea, and R*pe Me. It's a good album, but it's just too noisy overall to be great.
Wasn’t my type of song, but i enjoyed it
Ya lo tengo re escuchado, lo iba a volver a escuchar para ratearlo pero no lo hice. Acá va review según recuerdo
The grunge cherry - fuckin straight banger after banger.
It is, of course, very good indeed - just the attitude and the vocals alone are worthy of the high marks. It suffers in comparison to Nevermind, although lots of people like to pretend otherwise. I think elements are just a little bit screamy and lack a little bit of sensitivity, the presence of which is what makes Nevermind unique. Still though, Heart Shaped Box, All Apologies and at least five others bring this right up into the big numbers.
Favourite Songs: Milk It Radio Friendly Unit Shifter
This one is iconic I know and Kurt Cobain is a myth of a man, but his screaming lyrics were my least favorite part. On the harder songs the drums and guitar were fire. I also really liked his lyrics the best when he wasn't singing like a thrash metal artist.
In 1993 I would have given this album a 6. But the 52 year old me isn't as into it, and I think I listened to this album so many times in my youth that I'm sort of over it. I can still listen to this and absolutely love the musicality of it but sometimes the vocals are kinda too much. I appreciate Kurt Cobain more as a guitar player and songwriter more than a vocalist and lyrical poet. His lyrics are depressing, angsty, and abstract. Eat some salt. Get some cancer. Cum on toast. Break my hymen with a swordfish. Drink some laxatives. Pay your parasites. What the fuck, man? I don't know. He likes the comfort in being sad. Rock n Roll! My favorites that stand the test of time: Serve the Servants, Dumb, Very Ape, Radio Friendly Unit Shifter (probably my all time favorite Nirvana song), and All Apologies. Those songs make me sad to think about the songs that could have been written. Beyond the persona and legend of Kurt Cobain there is definitely a synergy here between guitar, bass, and drums that is alchemically brilliant.
I definitely gravitated to the more known songs on this album (Heart-Shaped Box, Dumb, Pennyroyal Tea, All Apologies). Those songs are great. The rest, I feel more mid on. Like if it was any other band, I'm not sure I'd like them with how dramatically angsty and rage-y some of them are. But there's a genuine nature in the rawness of his angst and rage. And the guitar and drums are so super rockin' throughout.
This album is like half irreverent class clown junk, and half dark and twisted brilliance. So I guess it's a Nirvana album.
7/10
I'm a bit scared imagine I get into nirvana and I get performative males asking me to name 5 nirvana songs. Serve the servants: I like the guitar. Help I just remembered how different his speaking voice is to his singing voice 💀 omg the chorus got stuck in my head Scentless apprentice: wow the drums!!! Oh he's screaming now. Heart shaped box: my favourite so far!! The lyrics are really good and I enjoyed the guitar Rape me: I liked that one too. I enjoyed the guitar and instruments! Frances Farmer will have her revenge on Seattle: I liked this one. "I miss the comfort in being sad" SAME?? Reading these lyrics were interesting too Dumb: omg so true! I like that one too omg what I'm evolving I think #characterdevelopment Very ape: wait I ALSO like this one. I like the fun lyrics "contradictionary flies/ I take pride as the king of illiterature" that's funny Milk it: I am really enjoying reading the lyrics to these songs and the analysis they're really good Pennyroyal tea: this name sounds familiar I wonder if I know it. I don't know it. I'm also on antacids! Radio friendly unit shifter: this one was ok I don't know if I'm just tired now but I forgot to look at lyrics analysis for this one Tourettes: oh he's screaming again. Oh wow that was short ngl I didn't like this one as much. All apologies: I liked that song again it was so true! Ranking: Heart shaped box Dumb Pennyroyal tea Frances farmer Rape me All apologies Milk it Serve the servants Very ape Scentless apprentice Radio friendly unit shifter Tourettes
The epitome of grunge rock. One of Nirvana best albums. Revisiting was nostalgic.
This album has some amazing songs with some very generic Nirvana sounding songs mixed in, I liked it.
I liked the songs. They had weird lyrics tho. lol. Like something an antagonist with raging feelings would write. My favourite was Dumb and Milk It. I’d rate it a 8/10.
Despite all the banger ("Heart Shaped Box", "Rape Me", "Dumb", "Pennyroyal Tea", "All Apologies") I give it only the weak four stars because there are also some average songs and even some sucker ("Scentless Apprentice", "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter", "tourette's") on. 3,5
they're pissed the hell off. the anger does to a significant degree end up sounding the same all the way through, unfortunately, but it's still very high energy. production is great as well.
I feel like Nirvana is one of those bands that really shouldn't work. Kurt Cobain isn't a particularly great songwriter, plenty of bands were already doing their sound before they did (Dinosaur Jr., Flipper, etc.), and one of the biggest songs on this album recycles the guitar riff from their #1 biggest song. Despite that, it just works, and In Utero really is a testament to that. It's a ridiculously fun listen that really never gets old for me and has some really interesting moments throughout it. The best part is Kurt Cobain laughing at the drummer doing something stupid in the middle of Milk It.
As this era of music is my comfort food, I am obligated to like this album. There are some great songs on here and it has a fantastic raw feel despite being made by a huge band with a big budget. It’s still not my favorite Nirvana album, though, nor is Nirvana my favorite band of the era by a long shot. Still great though and an important work.
Pretty good, definitely Nirvana's best. I can't wait to see what they do next!
Lots of screaming, couple of bangers: Dumb, Rape me, Heart shaped box. 8/10
Nirvana's best album. Love this as an intro to the genre. Only a four because I think so many of that era do it better.
Crudo, casi sucio, rasposo.
An interesting mix of Bleach's raw power and the catchy hooks of Nevermind, with a somewhat haunting air. A great record period.
A lot of yelling, but the first song is decent 2nd song was not great. The 3rd song, Heart Shaped Box, is amazing.
Klassiker på alla sätt.
Great album!
wow great album. bangers. just not a huge grunge guy
Me gusta
The 90s were full of bands, and the record execs who signed them, trying to recreate Nirvana with a formula of loud guitars and impenetrable lyrics. What they often missed is that Nirvana was doing its own thing, not relying on a formula. In 1994 this was a near-constant listen. A lot of it still holds up, but the "screaming tracks" as I call them are best left to the dustbin of history. We want to assign the label of genius to troubled people. Kurt Cobain sure had a knack for melody and writing lyrics that hinted at a deeper meaning.
It was important.
I liked this one it was nice to listen to but it took me a while
This album features a more aggressive and angular sound than their previous record Nevermind. Because it was produced/recorded by Steve Albini, who is famous for his own bands' very treble-heavy sound, it sounds natural even if the music is abrasive and tortured. It seemed like an obvious pairing. The writing and performances are all very similar to Nevermind though, mostly menacing and abrasive or alternatively dismissive and apathetic. Nirvana managed to merge angry bizarre punk and infectious pop in a way that no one had before. The singles are all 5-star, and unfortunately it makes the rest of the album tracks look less amazing by comparison, even though they're still great in their own way.
It's good? I enjoy Nirvana but rarely pick them to listen to
Shockingly I've never listened to this before despite how much I love Nirvana. Definnitely worth 4 stars for the excellence of some of the hits, but also how punk it is to release this after Nevermind in a period wher they could have cashed in. Good work.
Excited for this one. Second nirvana album, first studio album. There’s some songs I know so I know I’ll like it. Serve the servants is just ok as far as nirvana songs go, good song overall tho. Really good guitar solo. Wasn’t expecting a heavy metal song like scentless apprentice. This is ahead banger. Not really my style but not terrible. Heat shaped box is a banger. Classic nirvana. Great somgwritign/guitar/drums. Followed by rape me which is another banger/classic. Not as much of a fan of Frances farmer. It’s definitely classic nirvana but kinda generic. And then back to bangers with dumb. I like the live better version but it’s just a great song. Really good vocals/lyrics. Very ape is ok. Nothing really special. Really good guitar on milk it, the rest of it is not for me. Again was mot expecting this heavy metal. Pennyroyal tea🔥🔥. I actually like this version better than the live version. Guitar is much better. Really good solo. Radio friendly is really well written. Would’ve liked a more catchy chorus though. Don really like Tourette’s, too metal for me. Can’t tell what he’s saying. Guitar is good tho. I can respect the range however. Especially when it’s followed by such a classic in all apologies. What a song. What a way to end this album. The album as a whole is not as good as nevermind but you can’t expect a band to follow up a classic like that. There’s some all time bangers, and some songs I’ll never hear again. Overall a pleasant listen. 3.6 stars.
A Brutal, painful, cathartic and sad album for many reasons
Nirvana’s 4th best album.
Good album. Some bangers on there I already knew (the singles really: HSB, rape me, serve the servants etc). Would go back again to listen more.
Starts strong with Serve the Servants. Next track a bit abrasive - see also Tourette’s. Great singles. More raw than Nevermind - deliberately. Overall this is superior grunge music - the genre generally includes a lot of shit. Nowhere near a 5 for me - too much angst - but can give it a 4.
Not quite enough for a 5 for me, although love the singles. They lose me from Dumb to Pennyroyal Tea
A really good rock record! Drums sound fantastic. a little reminiscent of Albino's Surfer Rosa production. Wot a closer All Apologies is.
so fucking good bro!!!!!! grunge icons fav song from here: all apologies
I love this album cover so much, there’s something about it that feels strangely familiar, like a memory I can’t fully reach. The songs were playing while I was cooking, and I couldn’t believe how fast time passed for someone who doesn’t usually cook. It didn’t feel like I was there anymore. It felt like I slipped somewhere else. It has this way of feeding my need to escape reality, pulling me into another world without asking. My top 3 songs from this album are: Rape Me, Scentless Apprentice, Serve The Servants. It pulled things out of me I thought were long buried, thoughts about family, the weight of expectations, about what it means to exist without really belonging anywhere.
So good that Courtney had to kill Kurt shortly after recording this. Fuck I've already used that joke
Underskattad platta!
i really liked it!! so far all these albums are very well put together, like a single line of though, but this one has to be the best one so far. For me this type of music is PEAK study music, cause i can listen to in in the background without getting distracted. and Kurt's voice has something that i find so cool idk what it is. He sounds half dead and i find that so cool. I did givenit a second listen, go actually foxus on the sogns instead of the general vibe of the album, and i really enjoyed it both times. A very BERY sold 4. could maybe go to five. im not sure yet though
Nirvana cooked with this one
Album No. 0206 on my list. I had not listened to this in a long time. I’m not the biggest fan of Nirvana (and find them somewhat overrated occasionally), but from my teenage years I remember that I found the album pretty solid at the time. And my assessment of “In Utero” has not really changed; it’s a pretty good album! Peak grunge. It feels like Nirvana took the album’s predecessor and just developed it a little further. Perfected would be one way to phrase it, but at the same time some of the raw energy of Nirvana’s previous record was lost. It’s a little more pop-esque, but I still like it a lot. To me, “In Utero” is equally good as “Nevermind” (hot take, I know). The songs are on point, Cobain’s singing is good, the production is very good. I’ll add “Heart-Shaped Box”, “Rape Me”, “Pennyroyal Tea”, and “All Apologies” to my playlist. Good stuff, I think I’ll listen to the album a little bit more often in the future. 4/5 stars!
The songs I remember are as good as I remember them. The ones I don't remember, I remembered why I don't remember them. In the 90's, this album felt like the axles on our collective culture's band van were shaking and the wheels were about to come off. And then they did.
I really like Nirvana and am surprised I haven't listened to them more often.
Every now and then I wonder what would’ve been had Kurt kept living. Would Nirvana have floated into obscurity, kept releasing awesome albums and stayed on top, or if their sound would change over time. This album almost gives a glimpse into the direction they were heading, seems a couple of semitones heavier and darker, but also a bit more polished in terms of songwriting (rape me notwithstanding). Heart shaped box and all apologies are examples of this for me. It’s a shame we’ll never know. I feel like this album represents a modest shift that indicates they were just starting to hit their straps.
classic…… my favorite nirvana album
This is like the grunge equivalent of Michael Jackson following up "Thriller" with "Bad." Does it have some bangers? Yes! Do the songs that weren't hits drag down the quality of the album? No! Is it better than the absolutely stacked album that came before it? No! Is it still a high quality album? Yes! 4/5
muy buen álbum de una banda que amo con mi corazón pero me parece de los perritos de nirvana igual es un 9 solido
Sludgy
Edited
Scentless apprectice is a very under rated nirvana track
An oldie but goodie. So much heavier than Nevermind. My fave track is still Pennyroyal Tea.
good alum
okay some really solid songs some i don’t like but pretty good 3.5/5
Feels like a homeless man screaming in my ears who has lived more life than I will ever know. Insanely raw production and harsh vocal and drums recorded in a Basket ball hall. Unique and personal. I feel as though this record is great glimpse into the personal side into all of us, the side of ourselves wed rather keep quiet.
Nirvana is the epitome of the Seattle Grunge scene, and as a Grunge teen in the 90s, they were one of my favorite bands. I absolutely appreciate what they did with this album and the lasting impression the band left on the world, but it's not my favorite Nirvana album, but that's just from my ears' perspective. I'm not smart enough to weigh in on the lyrical accomplishments of Cobain, but then again, poetry was never my strong suit.
