Reviews (page 9 of 13)

This is a bit more uneven than Elephant, but a solid listen all around. 3.5

Get Behind Me Satan wasn't for me, so I had high hopes that my next White Stripes album would fare better. While I'm still not fully sold on the music (maybe Jack White's songwriting style just isn't going to gel with me most of the time), I definitely got more enjoyment out of White Blood Cells! It's much more sonically cohesive than GBMS and the "teenage garage band" energy it gives off somewhat excuses its rough edges. Highlights: Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground, Fell in Love with a Girl, Little Room, The Union Forever, I Can’t Wait, This Protector

The White Stripes have some really great songs. But only in between a lot of other songs, which are not really so good. And the same is true for this album.

Cool rock drops

Listened to this album a lot back when it came out. Still pretty solid.

Guitarist/singer/songwriter Jack White is a decent melodicist with a distinctive voice, but the music on *White Blood Cells* often treads on too-familiar ground (Zeppelin-esque blues rock / garage rock / uptempo folk). He does strike gold a few times with the tough "Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground", the hyperactive "Fell In Love With A Girl" and the heartfelt "We're Going To Be Friends" among others, but the rest of the songs aren't uniformly good, and by about the 3/4 mark I feel like that record has said everything it needs to say (and it's also where my tolerance for listening to Meg White smack the crash cymbal runs out).

Better than I expected, jack white is hit or miss for me, but the energy on this album was on point

The more I listen to the White Stripes, the more I realize that they're really just a hits band. Their albums are just a collection of songs. I know that from a really zoomed out perspective that that is all an album ever really is, but in this case, it feels like a negative thing. Some of the songs are very good, and they've got a really nice garage rock sound. But it does feel more like listening to an extended demo than an actual album. Part of why I feel so down with this album is that it feels almost like a ghost of what's coming. I don't think it's a bad album, but it definitely doesn't hold a candle to the other White Stripes albums, while also feeling really disjointed. Favorite Song(s): Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground, I'm Finding It Hard to Be a Gentleman, We're Going to Be Friends

Imagine having to do be in a band and do a tour with your ex-wife. Would not be fun. But seriously The White Stripes are great as always but this one felt like it was just slipping away from start to finish. there was some highs but it became quite low and almost bland. Overall I did enjoy it 7/10

Some great tracks - some filler. Glad it was only 40 mins

Surprised to enjoy it as much as I did. Easy to get through. Liked Hotel Yorba and Now Mary the best.

I wanted to give it 4 stars because I like several of their songs, but the album as a whole kept getting on my nerves.

2/24/26 - Listened during "work". I really like the White Stripes but found this album to be mediocre. Not too much stood out to me as special, though I understand the ground it broke at the time. As it stands, this is middle of the road White Stripes. Best Song - Now Mary

I have a hard time distinguishing the various white stripes albums to be honest. But this is one of them.

Jack White can write a song. The trouble with this record is that half the songs are just “Dead leaves and the dirty ground” but slightly worse. The other half are all over the place, in a good way. I had no idea that they wrote “we are going to be friends!” I was sure that was from the 70s. Anyways. As with so many of the 90s/2000s records it’s way too long. I think boiling this down to the best 10 songs would’ve improved it immensely. THREE STARS

I forgot about this album and probably haven't listened since 2001. Very era defining at its time, holds up as a good rock album

I liked a few songs but I thought it was a bit too much rebel themed

It was fine, some of it even pretty cool.

Needs more seven nation army...

I like this album a lot. There’s a lot of bands that sounds kind of like this, but in 2001 there wasn’t. It’s a nice album. Not blown away. Not disappointed.

Some bops some nots

It’s alright isn’t it!

Similarly to “Get Behind Me Satan”, this was a rather tedious full album listen, which was front-loaded with its strongest moments. “Hotel Yorba” will forever be soaked in rose-tinted nostalgia, though :)

***an ok album, some tracks easy listening

Pretty good

I like the guitar a lot but his vocals are not my thing

It was fine. I think I missed the boat on this one back during the white stripes heyday and it’s not quite vibing with me now.

Best-I think we were gonna be friends Love this duo though the singers vocals were a bit shit at times the vibes were there ig.

It’s funny how the most famous song in this album is so unlike the rest of the album. This album is undeniably influential, yet I am a little underwhelmed.

i dont get the love for jack white, his music is average at best Would I listen again? no Deserves to be on this list: no 2.6

The duo brought alternative music to a wider audience, but if you already lived there, it wasn't much.

Decent. I've liked White Stripes' stuff, and I REALLY liked Jack White's solo album that I got introduced to here, but this album never really did so much for me. I like their following album Elephant quite a bit more than this one.

So I listened to White Blood Cells in one sitting and can say it was an I album I did not necessarily or fully connect to sonically but loved thematically! - the exploration of heartbreak, their navigation of a newfound fame and what felt like politically charged messages at times, were just breathtaking! I wouId like to preface the above opinion with the fact that I have found quite a few pop, indie, garage, alternative and scene rock gems in my day, but wouldn't necessarily say I was ever able to fully connect to the rock genre in the way I wish (in my opinion). That being said, the pen was insane on the album. I really loved 'I Can Learn' and have since added it to 'akori orin' - my main playlist. The vocal and melodic choices in this song were lovely, kind of gave me the same feeling Grace by Jeff Buckley did upon first listen. In fact, I may just have to give this album a second listen to really clarify how I feel. Overall a solid album icl.

Fine enough. Extremely tight runtime for 16 songs, no song ever overstays its welcome and most come and go without leaving a huge impression. That said I am a fan of Jack White so it was pleasant listening. Not something I'd return to often but the big songs off of this are solid and the rest is just fine.

Famoso nemesis do Jack Black. Parece desafinada a voz dele. O álbum foi melhorando, fui curtindo as músicas. Gostei da We're Going to be Friends.

Not bad, it just all sounds the same

Honestly, I am not loving this album. I think it has its highs and lows, but theres not enough highs for me to give this a good rating.

I love Jack White’s ability with a guitar, sometimes I like Jack White’s songwriting, never really thought much of Meg White’s drumming. This record has its moments, but as an album…it’s ok, not great. 6/10

Some great songs, especially early on in the album. But a few duds as well and the production didn't quite draw me in as much as other WS/JW albums.

This caught me ear far more than I expected. It's not great but it does feel fairly unique. I can hear some influences but it isn't just copying something else. I appreciated that enough for a three. It's catchy. I don't regret listening.

The compositions and instrumentation are in my wheelhouse. I don't find his voice the most compelling. The mixing is fine enough. Oh the Conan O'Brien needs a Friend theme. I Can't Wait for some reason caught my attention. Im curious to hear some stronger vocalists sing some of these. He does a good job of taking his influences and making something different.

It is not a bad album, I really enjoyed listening. It reminded me a little bit of Flourescent Adolescent by Arctic Monkeys (especially the music Fell in love with a girl), even though there are some songs that aren't that pleasant to hear.

Yeah, it’s the white stripes…meh

loti tads funky un shaggy matu vibes, es varu iedonaties koncertu kkada mazaa venue loti cool, nav iisti mans tho 5.5/10

really interesting 2000s rock album. i liked it for the most part, although i don't know how much i'd go back to a lot of the tracks. 3 / 5 stars (since i can't rate it 3.5)

Some iconic songs, just not my fav

Top 3: 1. I Can't Wait 2. Hotel Yorba 3. Fell In Love With A Girl I feel like most of the songs don't have much variation and hence are fairly forgettable. It definitely wasn't bad and I can definitely recognise the influence The White Stripes have had. I would probably come back to a few songs on this record.

2/3. A good intro to the band; solid songwriting, good guitar sounds, a fun and relatively quick listen.

First half - amazing 5/5, Second half - dreary 2/5

Really thought I was gonna like this more than I did - Fell in Love with a Girl is a great song but otherwise there were no other stand out tracks for me. I like the rough / lowkey production in theory but maybe it was a little TOO barebones for me

It’s like the same song over and over

I don't know much about The White Stripes. This album feels a lot like (proto?) incel-rock. That being said, I have a soft spot for the low fidelity garage rock vibes. I really enjoy the more folk-rock tracks (e.g. Hotel Yorba, We Are Going to Be Friends), they were delightfully unexpected interstices in what is often a slightly boring album.

Its fine. Highs and lows.

Cool album. Already had some of the songs saved.

A Fell in love with a girl-t ismertem róla csak.

Never been super into the White Stripes, but they got some good tunes. Fell in love with a Girl is the winner on this album. The rest is just ok.

I want to like The White Stripes, but listening to an album in earnest never pans out like I hope it would. They have a handful of great songs amongst a bunch of caterwauling, to borrow from the lexicon of Montgomery Burns. This album leans more towards the latter, I'm afraid.

Meg white es horrible

Album 28 Top 3 favorites off the album: Hotel Yorba, The Same Boy You've Always Known, We're Going To Be Friends This one was the right amount of heavy! Or maybe I'm just in the mood to listen to it today... jury's still out on that one. I forgot they did We're Going To Be Friends, so feeling nostalgic. Happy to say that the rest of the album was enjoyable, too. This is criminally short, blame it on... I don't know what, inability to form a real thought. Once again for myself, it's my public diary, so it doesn't matter!

Liked most songs, but some were too loud. Happy album overall, we need more happy music in the world. Favourite song: We're Going To Be Friends.

Better than I remembered. Quite a few decent songs emerge from the sludge of White Stripiness.

Better than I expected, good grungy vibes

I appreciate the White Stripes for doing something different, I've never been able to get behind them fully. LIkes: Lyrics, melodies, and energy level. Dislikes: Jack's voice and guitar tone.

- For it being released in 2001, it gives more earlier rock vibes -Almost has a "twang" to it that I didn't really expect from them -I like the Union Forever -Had no idea these guys made the Napoleon Dynamite song -Not much to say abt this album, not a very interesting album to me, 6.4/10

It was just okay

there's some incredible songs on this record. there's also a couple that it's best time forgot. 3/5

“You can’t be a pimp and a prostitute too.”

Sonically really cohesive even if some of the songs start to run together in the middle. I'd kind of forgotten about We Are Going to Be Friends. Insane that they basically made this album in 3 days. It has a real 2000s quality to it that pulls you right back in. My favorites: The Union Forever, I Can't Wait, and Fell in Love with a Girl

gidik kız

This is quintessential White Stripes. Despite being an indie rock album, the instrumentals are energetic and distinct (except for the acoustic tracks which are generally weaker). I didn't really like the singing styles on this album, but for whatever reason Jack White's voice sounds nice to me, so it's fine. The tracks range from bad to good with the only great track being "Little Room".

Not that memorable, but some great songs.

A great sound, but I found fewer songs stuck with me than on Elephant. Solid 3.5.

Bestes Lied: Were going to be friends Kennt man: Fell in love with a girl Höre ich das nochmal: Als Album nicht, einzelne Songs vllt.

Minimalist and diverse at the same time as they announce themselves to the world

I really liked this album

no nawet bangery

Felt very repetitive to me. It a fan of the flat sound of the white stripes because there’s only two members

I like it

it's ok, 3

Solid album - I like how raw around the edges it sounds. Has one of my favorite songs ever on it. Decent little :45 second mini songs that sounded country in there. Still feels a bit “juvenile” at times.

good rock but bit boring

6/10 not bad, but not my style. I liked a couple songs

Fun listen

edgy 3.5

The White Stripes are a duo that seemed to have defined and embraced early garage band sound. I appreciate the raw energy and hardness of the guitar, sounding like the amp is right near you. Unfortunately I must say though that a lot of their songs seemed like gibberish to me as there was no coherent thought process to the words and I was confused as to what bro was trying to get at. Maybe that was the point? I’m not sure. But I feel like listening to them in moderation or having a song of theirs on a playlist is great, but listening to the whole album through got slightly obnoxious.

Simple and raw.

I really love the sounds of the album and the flow, but it’s not something I would put into my daily rotation

7/10 - Good garage rock album. Consistent throughout.

Okay. The rough vocals really worked in some songs but not so much in others. Liked the guitar, felt that the album as a whole could use something additional.

pretty okay, i do like aluminum and dead leaves and the dirty ground, but the rest of it kinda blended together

enjoyable individually but samey/repetitive overall. standouts 2 ME were dead leaves and the dirty ground, we’re going to be friends, the union forever, and i think i smell a rat. fave probably still we’re going to be friends.

Recognized We’re Going to Be Friends!! Did not realize it was from this group or this album. Also the human imperfections in the songs make it feel more intimate in a way, like im there watching them perform live if that makes sense lol. Generally not my cup of tea but still enjoyed some songs!!

O hey I know one of these!! Overall solidly Pretty Good, wasn't a huge fan of Aluminum but eh didn't sway me too much

Bem legal. Gostei de I Think I Smell a Rat e We're goig to be friends.

I've liked the Album but it's not my genre. It has a lot of energy though.

i liked it; very 2001, little bit of pain lot of angst

This is so 2010s grunge teen clothing ad

3 stars. That’s all I have to say.

I’m finding it harder to be a gentleman

I played this album end to end and found it pleasant enough. No tracks have stayed in my mind.

The White Stripes is one of those bands I hear talked about overwhelmingly positively, but I’m not really familiar with anything by them other than Seven Nation Army. I liked this album though - a great sound with some standout tracks. But overall, the songwriting didn’t impress me enough to be as positive about this band as everyone else seems to be.

I kind of don’t get it. I like the stripped down aspect but don’t love it.

5/10 Best: We’re gonna be friend Worst: This Protector I liked the sound of the vocals on this album, wasn’t my favourite but it had a very 2000’s feel to it, I actually prefer their 2003 album Elephant. The songs I like on this album I really like but overall it feels a bit disjointed and I the songs I dislike, I hate.

Love the top tier of songs, most of the others aren't too memorable. 3.5* Favorite song: Fell in Love with a Girl

Since my exposure to The White Stripes is limited to the Elephant album, that is where my bar is set. This was a good album, but it lacked the experimentation that the next album brings. I feel I need to just rub through the Six album discography from start to finish to get a feel of their evolution. But as for late 90s and post 2000 bands, I am at least intrigued.

Didn’t really care bout it. There was nothing I especially liked or disliked.

Cool simplistic rock that catches your ear. There is definitely more to the band than just 7 nation army. Highlights Hotel Yorba and Fell In Love With a Girl.

best songs: we are going to be friends, fell in love with a girl overall: like a good album but not life changing. freshman year flashbacks. would enjoy the songs if they came on, but probably wouldn’t revisit the album all the way through.

solid 7.5/10

didn’t hate this as much as i thought i would, aside from we are gonna be friends i fucking HATE that song

3⭐️ good album, very surprised how much I liked most of the jobs. 1/5 didn’t finish the album 2/5 didn’t keep the album 3/5 kept it and will listen when songs randomly show up on shuffle 4/5 kept it and will listen to it again on my phone 5/5 buying the vinyl

Sterke vocals. Opgeslagen 2. Lekkere beat. Klinkt wat vrolijker door de gitaar. Leuke bridge! Opgeslagen 3. De gitaar ook hierop??!! heel lekker. Tikkeltje langdradig, tempo wise. Niet opgeslagen. 4. Hou van de old school vibes. Fan van hoe er wordt gezongen. Kan je lekker op dansen!! Opgeslagen. 5.

My teenage self would have liked it, but today it’s not for me. Angsty, songs quite similar

Paljon joko absurdeja tai "halpoja" riimejä. Särökitararoimetta - hyvää mutta kuluttavaa kuunneltavaa.

Fell in love with a girl is still great and you can see the seeds of their future greatness

Not my favourite White Stripes record, but it’s not bad by any means. I think I just hold a higher standard for their music and nothing from here really stood out and as a whole just kind of blended together

Well, it just sounds like the white stripes and it gives the impression of being one monotonous song rather than a coherent album. It’s okay but nothing special.

Musik nichts besonderes?

Not an album I would gravitate towards but if it played in the background i wouldn’t be bothered

Sounds way after it's years. Heavy 60s sound. Starts with a few really catchy tracks, gets a little experimental as it goes. Probably an album that takes a few listens to really get, and I'll give it that eventually. But a good album even on first listen. Surprising I've never given these guys a chance before.

There were a few nice, catchy songs on the album. But it didn't feel like it all came together as a unified album. Not terrible.

Fängt schwach an, wird immer besser gegen ende

This band are talented and occasionally exciting but overall it's just a dull record.

Second half of this album is better, although I might have just gotten used to the grating vocals. Can't justify more than 3.

Far stranger than expected with a lot of half-formed experiments and peculiar songs. But when they kick out a jam, it’s a rush.

Rock. 2,7

I thought I really liked The White Stripes, I mean I love Elephant but did not really enjoy this one the same.

Very appropriate as they were just inducted into the Rock HoF, however this ranks a little low for me in their discography. It sounds like they’re still piecing it together while having flashes of what they become

Overall alright, definitely a 3 star album for me. Nothing to exciting here but I found some snippets here I liked.

Kinda one dimensional. It was new and different at the time but not really mind blowing

Good but prefer seven nation army.

Not great, not terrible. Just authentic to the era “alt rock sound”. This is something you’d hear in a 2000s commercial or video game.

I still feel like this is one of the most overrated groups of all time. Jack White's work after their breakup is better imho.

Interesting album, though I'm confused on how I'm supposed to feel here. It was nice though.

A couple of great stand out tracks but the rest just isn't for me

I liked how raw this album feels. It’s easy to forget that White Stripes was two people with a wall of sounds, a shitload of creative genius, a guitar and a drum kit. Fell In Love With A Girl is the only hit I remember on this album, but the whole album is really good. The song Same Boy has an almost Zeppelin feel to it, and Hotel Yorba has a later Beatles feel. And I Can’t Wait felt very Seattle grunge. It really did feel like Jack White was playing homage to his favorite bands and music. It’s in your face but not the same way as Elephant or Icky Thump. Great listen though!

Bluesy, rocking , punky sound. Everything you’d expect from the WS’

Am I not seeing what everyone else is with White Blood Cells??? I get The White Stripes are supposed to be the "last rockstars" for some with their stellar reputation for revitializing that Garage Rock sound people wanted for the 2000s, but this project just feels like just another piece in the puddle that is Garage Rock, not a defining masterpiece. Yes there are some truly great songs here like Feel In Love With a Girl and We're Going to Be Friends, but for the most part I felt very underwhelmed with what Jack and Meg White were cooking up on this album. A lot of the tracks here felt a bit aimless and had no idea how to fit itself together into the album and were just barely scratching a "good" itch in my eyes. I can appreciate The White Stripes for all that they did, but I expected so much more from White Blood Cells that really has me wondering if this band still stands up 20 years later...

I Can Learn interpolation in Jack White’s Why Walk a Dog? Overall it’s a good record. production is rudimentary, but songwriting is strong, and performances are authentic which makes up for that. Being a medium white stripes fan I would probably reach for some of their later work, but you can really see the foundations of the band in a record as simple as this. Cohesive thematically and musically

Light 3,5

I like Dead Leaves and Fell In Love With A Girl, but I can't love any of their projects all the way through. 3 Stars.

Alright - some good tunes, some not for me Added: (I can tell) We are gonna be friends

I mean yeah, it's The White Stripes, it's still /good/. But does this really need to be here as well as Elephant? They sound the same to me honestly. I don't think it was necessary. Nothing here really stands out apart from "Fell In Love With a Girl".

After listening to the opening track I thought it ended abruptly and that it felt like it was missing something. Bass. The entire album is missing bass. I think this is an interesting artistic choice like if I were to walk across the road in summer without any shoes on. A bit harsh yes, but frankly I do not think that Jack White’s vocals are good enough to carry this album without bass. As the album goes on, I am just kind of non-plussed. It’s very serviceable rock music, I suppose this came out at the peak of overproduced nu metal bullshit and a while after grunge had declined in popularity. In context, it makes sense why this was popular and make the White Stripes so big. I am trying to keep this in mind because I think on its own this album is kind of boring. It's impressive what the duo can do on their own, and reading that the production was intentionally rushed is cool and all but if you are judging albums based on that then this does not hold a candle to something like the Koln Concert. Seems like it would have paid off more if they had just produced it like a normal album. Then it wouldn’t be garage rock? Who cares, I have spent enough time writing about this. Side B is better than Side A but not enough for me to say this is a great album. Is the best song on this album good because it was in Napoleon Dynamite or was it in Napoleon Dynamite because it’s the best song on the album? Hard to say. Highlights: We’re Going to Be Friends

Brut, bruyant parfois génial parfois juste chiant. Mention spéciale pour "Aluminium".

I think with the context of so many of these classic rock records, it's easier to understand why Jack White's got all the spots he has and shares on this list. Credit to Meg for her work here, but on the grand scale... There's an understanding about the direction rock and roll is going towards, and this project is a well executed snapshot of the evolution of the 2000s. Unless you're in the mood for a soft-spoken Nirvana alternative, it's an easy one to forget. I'm sure I've heard this record before but I only remember Fell In Love With A Girl. Great track to be reminded of once in a while, on a superficial level I feel like it outshines the track list a bit. The rest of it is perfectly listenable. Musically and melodically solid. Probably just takes a vulnerable ear to grow addicted to the provided style. 3.3/5

Not a great album, but a good one, I can see why many people don't like his voice, but I didn't mind it, especially on "We're Going to Be Friends" which I found catchy and kinda reminded me of early Beatles.

Some gems but several songs annoyed me

I liked it a bit better than Get Behind Me Satan. We're Going To Be Friends reminds me of The Beatles

I thought I would love this album, but I only liked it. It just didn't hit the spot. Sad to only give it 3 stars.

Punk and some alternative are just not my cup of tea. For The White Stripes, I have liked other songs over the years, but this particular album didn't win me over totally. There were a few tracks that resonated with me. Musically, I do like the melodies, guitars, and drums. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s)? "The Same Boy You've Always Known" (it's a little Beatle-esque), "We're Going to be Friends" ⭐⭐⭐: I somewhat like it; didn't hate it. Saved no tracks.

I thought he sang "I think I smell alright." 😂 Anyway, this was fine. I saved a couple of songs. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): Fell In Love With a Girl, We're Going to Be Friends ⭐⭐⭐: Liked it. Saved some tracks.

Starts off strongly but fades away in the second half.

This was my first experience really listening to The White Stripes. Not bad garage/alt rock music, definitely heard worse. 16 songs at 40 minutes is very listenable and packs a punch, but can get redundant. It’s an ok album and adequate rock music, but nothing blew me away and I most likely won’t listen again aside from some songs. I think a 2.5 rounded up to a 3 is appropriate.

Probably their best. This is fantastic when you're in the mood for it, but can get a bit grating when you're not.

Favourite track(s): We're Going to Be Friends; Offend in Every Way Musically coherent but thematically - not sure. There is some clear repetition here and it does not help that some tracks (of which there are too many) do not elicit any emotional resonance whatsoever. The sound of distorted guitars is ever-present and may also be too much for some. But the album generally feels quite intimate, like a private garage concert, which is a plus. May have influenced later works of bands like Arctic Monkeys or The Hive.

3 I've always felt like White Stripes was a band I could really get into if I just had the time - still feel that way. Solid album but not currently something I'd revisit frequently.

I am aware of, but have not been the biggest fan of, the White Stripes. They have some absolute bangers (the popular songs), but not many are on this album. However, this does contain the amazing and fantastic We’re Going to Be Friends, so gets an extra star from me.

A couple of listens through have brought me to the conclusion that TWS essentially have thee or four songs, and the bulk of their catalogue seems to be made up of variations of these. Thankfully these three or four songs are pretty good, and Jack White’s prowess as a songwriter, musician and performer is undeniable.

There are some really nice songs, good changes of pace, and I have always loved his guitar playing. The album lacks the vitality of their live performances of these songs - I found that songs that were thrilling live were just a bit too clinical when committed to record.

Seriously get a bass player.

I respect jack white as an artist but his music has never really spoken to me. There are occasional moments that i think he strikes gold but overall im just not that excited by it. I do think he is talented and i think hes done a good job of cultivating a unique vibe as an artist.

I find the songwriting super hard to grapple with. I feel like there are lyrics that are fantastic but the majority are elementary at best. Overall this album is forgettable and I much prefer Jack White now.

- my husband is a white stripes fan, so discussing this album with him made for an insightful car ride home last night - this feels like the album someone would write after school in their bedroom if they had just learned how to play guitar six months ago, but I don't mean that as a negative critique. instead, it's refreshingly minimal and feels free of external influence; there's no standard 12-bar blues template in use over and over here - this album feels like a jackson pollock painting: someone could hear songs from White Blood Cells and think "*this* is the group that made it? this is the best of the best?", but both of those questions are missing the point. I mentioned this to husband and he posited that we all generally accept that music is art, but usually only from a technical skill perspective, not as a form of making a statement by intentionally leaving things out or avoiding "rules" or tropes for effect. on the one hand, it's hard to imagine creating and sharing something that doesn't highlight your absolute best, especially if you want other people to like your music and make a living from it, but then again, there's almost no one daring to do the opposite out there... and thus: the white stripes - to that point, jack white instructed the sound engineer to "not make it sound too good," from what I understand - people tend to get frustrated with modern art because it often has the appearance of having no thought or skill put into it, so why should those people make all the money over the "better" artists who don't? and that's a reasonable thought to have in a largely capitalist world (i.e., if you're paying for a service, it follows that you would choose the service that's better than all the others to avoid wasting your money), but at the most basic level, it seems arbitrary to judge art almost entirely by its monetary value. we're the only animal on earth that has the capacity to create things out of nothing to such a degree, and to limit acknowledgement of that ability by viewing everything we do through the lens of whether it could be appealing to others or hit a certain number of sales feels like a real shame - in other words: if you write 15 drafts of a song over three years and then choose the "best" one to perform with your band in hopes that people will listen to your music on Spotify and maybe buy a t-shirt or sticker from your merch table, who (or what) is the thing that says those other 14 drafts do not merit any recognition whatsoever? they all came out of your head and did not exist until the moment you wrote down the lyrics, same as the "best" one, and just because they didn't suit a specific purpose or set of criteria doesn't remove the value in your creative process (that, once again, no other species on this planet -- or universe, to our current knowledge -- is capable of engaging in) - but now back to your regularly scheduled programming: the majority of the songs are based around big power chords rather than riffs, which lends some punk power to this rock album - similarly, meg white is just beating the shit out of the crash cymbal to make up for the lack of complexity in the rest of it, which is fun and head bob-inducing, and it certainly takes up space - jack white's vocals evoke a sense of... anxiety? I think this feeling might come from the lack of bass across the whole album in general, but he's also not singing terribly well; it's just unique (with the benefit of now being immediately recognizable in other songs and projects he's been involved in) three stars feels about right for my first time listening to this full album, despite the passionate rant in defense of ~art~ -- not my favorite, but a solid effort that made me question and think about some things. definitely looking forward to experiencing some more white stripes tunes when they come around again

Not as good as Elephant but a pretty solid debut. Had some good singles on it too!

Not great, not terrible. Probably not gonna listen to this again, though.

Decent rock album. A few standout songs. 3/5

The best moments, when it grooves, are fantastic (and where all the hits are). She of the other tracks come off as Jack White trying to explain why he loves a genre of music and not always succeeding.

As with Elephant, half the album is good and the other is just ok. The hits aren't as strong as the ones from Elephant but the album as a whole is a bit more consistent. Some of the short tracks are mindless drabble from Jack. I put this one right on the same level as their other albums. For a duo, they are good but after getting full record exposure form the list, I think there are some better 2-part acts. 3.12 stars.

White Blood Cells is another well known album from The White Stripes. While it still holds up well it comes in a little below the prior entry. It's got a lot of the signature Jack White flair and a good mix of some hard indie rock and more slowed down folksy stuff. Enjoyable listen pretty much all the way through. Another solid entry from Jack White (and company). 3.31 stars

There are some standout tracks on this that appear pretty regularly in the stupidly long playlist I use for running to (Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground, I Fell In Love With a Girl). But Jack's voice isn't something I can listen to for a long time, so after a while I found this album grating. There doesn't seem to be any real depth of tone to the songs, so everything feels lightweight and tinny. Similar in vibe to Violent Femmes, but nowhere near as good. That said, We're Going to be Friends is an enjoyable track.

Organic and easy on the ear.

A couple classic songs, overall fine

Some great tracks, others didn't hit. 5/10

It's simple, it's stripped down, and it rocks! The first half is amazing, the second kind of cools off a bit but solid overall. Favorite track: Hotel Yorba

Having only very recently been subjected to Meg White drumming like a toddler, I had no expectations about enjoying this album. However, I was surprised to find that I was very familiar with the opening run of tracks, and even more surprised to find that I quite enjoyed them. Then the wheels came off, as expected, for me, and I didn’t enjoy the remainder of the album.

Only 11 albums ago I was listening to Get Behind Me Satan saying I never got into the White Stripes when they first came out, and now they're back. It honestly surprised me there was another White Stripes album on the list (and then I checked and discovered I have another one to go). Once again, not one They Might Be Giants album made the list - harrumph! I like Hotel Yorba despite a massive list of things that mean I should hate it - the shrillness of the vocals, the Megness of the drumming, the fact there's basically nothing to it - but nope, the catchiness is undeniable. Same with Fell In Love With A Girl. "Jack asked recording engineer Stuart Sikes more than once "not to make it sound too good."." ...and then the album went platinum in the UK and USA. The music industry is a bafflingly entity. I liked this album a better than Get Behind Me Satan but I can't really put my finger on why. 3/5

not that this band or this album is necessarily bad but i just find them so uninteresting. feels like rock for annoying people who cry about rock being dead

The hipster's bible entry. Jack White is a good guitar player. Jack White is a decent songwriter. Jack White is an excellent marketer. He carved his lane and stuck to it. The White Stripes changed music in the early '00s and Jacks resurgence of garage music helped reconnect the genre back to its early roots. His wandering eye for different genres and acts is the epitome of ADHD Rock. 3.5/5

just fine. Nothing of note.

Starts very strong! Great guitar vibes, indie rock feels. Gets a little lost on the last quarter...

Jack White is a cool dude, but I’ve never really latched on to the hype surrounding him. The music is good, but not THAT good. I enjoyed this record, but probably on a much different level than his most ardent fans.

This is good but belongs in the 2000's. I don't really need to hear it again

I don’t hate The White Stripes, they’re a pretty unique band and make solid music. I just don’t think they’ve made 3 albums worthy of this list. There’s been songs I really like here and there, my fav from this one being We’re Going To Be Friends but nothing else really stood out to me. I once again make my case that Meg should sing more though

An interesting collection of songs, some unmistakably the distinct garage rock / punk I knew or expected but many felt a bit more experimental (and not always successful) Overall I enjoyed the listen but it was far from a perfect album. Standout tracks include Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground and We’re Going to Be Friends

Songs like Hotel Yorba, We are Going to be Friends, and I Can Learn really carry this album for me - But for each of those there's an Aluminum that make me have to find the next button. Noisy garage rock is just not my genre. Hence, a mixed review.

For some reason just really not my jam.

It’s good👍🏻

3/5, solid album, enjoyed it though no songs particularly stuck out to me! But still a very nice listen! :)

Definitely some jams in this one but also plenty of filler.

Fora glazba!! 3.5/5 jer neke pjesme mi se stvarno nisu sviđale

68/100 has a couple of stinkers but for the most part is pretty good, lots of influence in here and obviously went into this project already knowing we're going to be friends and luckily i didn't leave it thinking it was the best song, i thought that was the union forever

Interesting guitar sound, short songs, relaxed atmosphere – these are the strengths of this album. Overall, it's not really my kind of music, so an average rating.

Every song basically felt like a way to stretch a riff into a five minute piece

mid 3 nothing wrong with it, i quite like it too

Better than I went in expecting. “I smell a rat” was my fave.

Solid album but peters out after Offend In Every Way. Love The White Stripes, but I don't think this is my fav

Led it!

Although there are already all the ingredients, this album don't sparks me in the same way the upcoming masterpiece "Elephant" does.

Not my favorite White Stripes album, but its the one that broke them so feels right that it's here. This seemed so invigorating when it first released. Wrapping Iggy Pop in blues music is right smack in my wheelhouse, beefed up by the rad crunch Jack gets out of his guitar and Meg's loose but fully embodied drums. (It also gave me the gift of seeking out their back catalog and finding "Little Bird" which has a complete hold on a handful of my brain cells for nigh on 25 years.) Of course when I listen to it now it just makes me want to get to Elephant. White Blood Cells is good, but it's about to get So. Much. Better.

This was just ok. Jack has better out there.

Energetic, but somewhat chaotic and incoherent.

Solid indie rock. So excited excellent vocals.

I really liked all of the songs and then i heard We're Going To Be Friends and loved even more

Gets better as the album goes on

Not much to say, a few classics here but overall this album just leaves me wishing I were listening to The Raconteurs.

There were a couple of good songs but overall not that exciting

I guess I don't like the White Stripes as much as I thought I did. This is the second album of theirs and it's just... okay. Jack's voice is fine but after multiple songs it gets old. Like they're not bad but they're definitely not my favorites. Also, "Aluminum" was just straight up noise

Worse than I remembered. Not cohesive at all. A couple of bops.

Some very good songs and some that don't quite hit the spot. But overall a solid album.

Meh. Thats how I’ve generally felt about the white stripes and that how I felt about this.

I think this record flows well. I feel like it tells a story throughout its run. I liked the instrumentation for the most part. I felt that the transition from higher-tempo to lower-tempo tracks wasn't done too well. Favourite Track(s): Fell In Love With A Girl, Little Room, Offend In Every Way Least Favourite Track(s): I think I Smell A Rat

I likes but then the singers voice got kinda annoying towards the end

Solid album has hotel yorba which is a good track but mostly it's just ok

Highlights: Fell In Love With A Girl, I Think I Smell A Rat, Hotel Yorba. In a nutshell: back to basics. A little blues guitar with good ol' rock. Some songs are serviceable, the hits indeed hit. The White Stripes were of many bands who lead the way with the 2000's garage rock revival. Remember that. Overall: 6/10

Even if you don't think that the White Stripes were musical pioneers, you've got to acknowledge their dedication to the craft. What I love about them is how they wear their influences on their sleeves, lovingly take their forebearers' legacy, add a good portion of garage rock ferocity, and create hooky songs out of it. That's how you do it. Plus, a word about Meg White's drumming: I adore her barebones, no-bullshit, clockwork-like approach. She really propels these songs; it's utterly brilliant. The art is to make it seem simple. But if it really was that simple, why can so few bands replicate it? The secret ingredients might be the great and, frankly, palpable chemistry between these two musicians.

Cool stuff - I like the bluesy tracks

Great album, but definitely way too long. The gems that were there were bangers. Others just flowed through. Great to revisit.

Fun riffs, enjoyed the pacing. More songs I recognized on here than I thought. Overall enjoyable even though they use like 4 chords the entire album

Not bad? Fine? Was cool

Eye rolled when I saw another White Stripes album but was soon toe-tapping and enjoying it. Surprising 3.

Some tracks were a bit garage rocky for me, but others were fine. I wouldn't seek them out again.

Great collection of insanely catchy, simple music. A few skips but not many. 7/10

Fun record

I've definitely tried to listen to the White Stripes before, but I didn't really like them. I really don't like that one that's like "i can tell that we are gonna be friends," but I like Seven Nation Army. So I could enjoy this album! Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground: This is really nice. I like how it sounds sort of like classic rock. Hotel Yorba: I just am not quite sure if I like the singer's voice much. It's definitely distinctive and kind of cool or interesting, but it's almost a little twangy and weak and I don't LOVE it. Why is he saying "deez" dafawk I like this song enough though. I'm Finding It Harder to be a Gentleman: I like this song lots. I think it sounds really cool. And I think his voice goes sort of well with it. I like this guitar riff. It's sorta Pixies? It's sorta Franz Ferdinand? Fell In Love With a Girl: I feel like I've heard this one before. I think it's real cool but his voice DOES annoy me "he don't cunsider it cheetin, nah" dude there's NO way he sounds like this it comes off totally insincere Expecting: Cool riff. It's a nice change of pace from the previous, faster songs. Little Room: Wow this guy annoys me. Maybe it's an acquired taste. This song, if you can call it that, is not good nor is it particularly interesting. Whatever. The Union Forever: Really cool, gothic sort of sound. Reminded me of Ruby Gloom or something. The Same Boy You've Always Known: I do not care for this but it's still good. I like the guitar-heavier parts. We're Going to Be Friends: bruh idk it's fine but it's not good i mean i get why people like it because it's sentimental and sweet but i personallty dgaf like whatever. Offend in Every Way; I like this riff too but it's not the best song i've ever heard. I Think I Smell a Rat: Even though I like silly songs with silly names, I do not like this. it's very Disney channel. I don't like it. Then some songs apparently forgettable enough to not remember listening to. Now Mary: I don't know. The vocal is never interestign, but the guitar always is. I Can Learn: Its almost a little bit weezer? im literally going crazy This Protector: Whatever dude I do not care too much piano shut up i hate white people never give a white couple a piano ever Okay you know what I'm hearing him talk and he literally has like a cool hot voice so why is he doing this weird shit? I dont know This is a pretty good album but it's just a little upsetting or boring sometimes so i feel like it's a solid umm 3.6

There are a lot of hits on this one.

When I was a teen I thoughtThe White Stripes and Jack White in general were overrated. The problem is that I thought that without listening to anything other than Seven Nation Army (which kicks ass). I'm 28, I've listened to a full album by The White Stripes and I can only say one thing about them: The White Stripes and Jack White in general are overrated. Now for the album itself: This album isn't good! He can sing, but decently sang on only two songs, the rest is either screaming or unarticulated sounds. The guitar playing is intentionally simplistic, but it's also not played well. The drumming is awful, but at least she can hold a beat. There are decent "moments" here and there and I like one song, maybe two. 2.5/5

Hugely influential album that paved the way for the sound that would become 2000s indie rock... for better and for worse.

Better then the other one I've heard from them. Still didn't love it but enjoyed a lot of songs

I like Jack White a lot more as a solo artist than I do in The White Stripes. This album just didn’t do much for me. It’s raw, it’s gritty, and I get why people love the garage rock energy, but most of it felt kind of flat. "Fell In Love With a Girl" is the clear standout. It’s short, punchy, and actually pretty fun. Bonus points for Weird Al giving it some love with his Lego-style parody. Outside of that, though, not much stuck with me. I respect what they were going for, but it’s just not something I’d go back to often.

There has to be some White Stripes on the list, but probably not multiple albums, and I’m not sure what the right one is. I think this one has a lot of great singles: Hotel Yorba, Fell in Love With a Girl, We’re Going to be Friends - but it doesn’t have 7NA sooo… I think most White Stripes albums have a lot of filler, and that’s true here. None of the tracks I hadn’t heard before really captured my attention, except maybe I Can’t Wait. Fave Tracks: Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground, the singles I mentioned above 3.3/5

That was pretty good! I usually like this genre of music, I wasn't vibing with this specific album but I still liked the instruments a lot.

Ve are ze vhite stripez! We are gonna be friends is very nostalgic. First half definitely has some bangers, just not grabbing me too much. Highlights: dead leaves, met a girl, we are gonna be friends, I can’t wait Solid 3/5⭐️

I am probably going to get crucified by my friends for saying this, but this album is just acceptable. Kind of just barely on the good side of mediocrity.

Kinda cool; evokes kids in a garage playing their favorite black sabbath, nirvana riffs. You can hear the country influence. Stripped down minimalist cool, but albums too long for me. Love ‘we are going to be friends’

Liked the songs I already knew Hotel Yoruba and We’re going to be friends. Others were ok, energetic. Maybe not a good day for that for me. Noisy sometimes, a lot of loud guitar. I would try to listen again

Good but expected more - altough not helped by Soptify playing up

I like the White Stripes. bit past the time when they would have had a huge impact on me but i can see why they are on the list

6/10 Highlights: Fell in a Love with a Girl Offend in Every Way I Think I Smell a Rat The Same Boy Youve Always Know We're Going to be Friends

Look, I love the White Stripes, but this album is a little boring

Good album

Solid. Curious how random this generator is lol.

Would give it 3.5 if I could. It’s good but it’s not their best

As usual with The White Stripes, I like the heavier tracks but find the slower, more stripped back tracks less interesting. The band sounds it's best when it's rocking hard but they have a tendency to slip into something that puts me in mind of the soundtrack to a children's TV show. What can't be doubted is Jack White's musical ability which here is paired with a naturalistic production quality that makes for interesting critical listening.

Some good songs here, and some just ok songs.

no es para mi

Decent

Solid sound from the White Stripes

Average at best and highly overrated... it only stands out because much of what was popular during that era was worse.

6'75/10

Decent songs, excellent drums, good rock-n-roll album, solid music before their personal lives influenced public perceptive

I don't really know why, but I've never been able to get into Jack White's music. I can appreciate the talent, but I guess his music (solo or in the White Stripes) is not for me

3.0 - Ok

A lot better than I thought it was going to be.

Not heard this for a long time - quite enjoyed it. Some of the vocals are poor, but lyrics and musically good.

Meh, it's fine.

I don't get the WSs. They sound like a privately educated Nirvana - some of the grit but none of the soul. It's fine, totally listenable but I just don't believe it.

Not a super big fan of the white stripes, this album didn’t change that for me. I feel like I should like them, but can’t quite put my finger on why. Just too generic sounding for me I guess?

Has a few White Stripes classics, but I honestly feel like it doesn't hold up as well as it used to. Still enjoyable enough I reckon.

Really good again. The White Stripes were consistently putting out fun and catchy songs with great riffs and moments. 3.5

Okay. Good.

While there are certain positives about the White Stripes, they start sounding repetitive rather quickly. I appreciate the garagey feel, the Detroit grunge, the rootsy touches, the straightforwardness, but give the self-consciousness a break for a sec and I actually like it more.

I spent a lot of time writing songs with just a guitarist and me on the drums, but I never considered that would be the final arrangement. It just sounds so incomplete. I know the White Stripes aren't the only band to have tried this sort of bare-bones approach, but it wears thin for me after three songs. The fact that it works at all is a testament to Jack White's outsized talent and vision. I really like and admire his contributions to music, he's done fantastic work, and it all starts here. But I can only take this band in really small doses. It's telling that every one of their seven albums gets a 4-star review or better on allmusic. Really? They are all THAT good? That's a tell: these guys are critics' darlings, but no way. The fact that they produced seven albums and stayed relevant throughout is a feat, but IMO, the music doesn't merit the fawning adoration. They're a cool band. Jack White is deservedly a star. I like a handful of songs. This album? It's OK. We've got three on this list? I'm probably just going to cut and paste this review into the other two.

This band is always hit then miss for me. I start a song or an album thinking they sound awesome and after just a bit it all sounds the same.

Fun, short album. Whenever I listen to White Stripes though it always feels like something is missing which stops me from really enjoying it and listening to it more often. 3 stars

I wouldn’t have chosen to listen to this but I didn’t mind it.
