Reviews (page 7 of 13)

It’s this over Elephant, for me. Best White Stripes album.

Jeg er ikke med på den her White Stripes bashing, synes den her holder 100. Kunne have været en 5er hvis den lige var 10 minutter kortere

Little room, the song I liked the most in this album, I think some people don't even understand

FELL IN LOVE WITH A GIRLLLLLLL! 2000s punk peak

It's amazing how great most of the songs on this album are in comparison to how terrible Jack White was the first time I saw them in concert in the early aughts.

Listen at: 15/02/2024

Good, long but good

I mean, it's the white stripes. Re-listened after a couple of years and it's still reliably and unsurprisingly good.

I still think this is probably their best album? Has some of the foibles that get exacerbated in later albums (Jack White finding himself a bit cleverer than everyone else does, and trying to base a whole song on a line or an idea that can't carry it), but there's some great stuff there. Fell In Love With A Girl is probably my favourite of their songs - it almost sounds like a punk cover of a 60s pop song, it's so full of energy and there's so much boxed into 2 minutes - but Hotel Yorba also great. 4/5, best we've had in a while.

i really enjoyed

Pure Nostalgia. Love this album.

Solid. I like the short tunes.

I have not listened to this album before but I have heard of this band. I generally liked all the tracks even though it’s a bit stylistically different from my taste in rock. I even recognized We’re going to be friends. Not much stood out to me as exceptionally better but I did like: I can’t wait a bit. I will listen again!

4/5. Arguably the best White Stripes album as a collection of songs. Short riff heavy rock songs that don't overstay their welcome. It feels like a brainstorming session come to life, each song feels very different and original. I get something new out of every re-listen, and a different song becomes my favorite. Not a huge fan of the band or sound, but it's not grating like it could be so it passed the tolerance threshold and now has my attention.

Not usually my kind of music, but I like the tracks on this one.

The first half of this album is so good. Had me dancing all over morning. The second half is still good, but not as grabbing.

I remember hearing the White Stripes and the Strokes in the early 00s and thinking to myself that Rock and Roll isn’t dead - despite Butt Rock’s best efforts. This record is so much fun - it gets a bit up and down towards the end. But the first half and more are absolute bangers.

Classic white stripes album. Good background music

Loved listening to this whole album!

Solid album. Not as rock or riffy as their others but still a great listen all the way through.

Fantastic album

By the time The White Stripes appeared on the scene (late 90s), I felt that groups like this were just a retread of the punk, post punk and new wave that I had been experiencing and immersing myself in since about 1975. I never gave them much credence, though some songs stood out and caught my attention over the years. Today, listening to White Blood Cells, I can officially say that I have finally listened to a whole White Stripes album and I like it! Not a retread at all but a unique approach to a certain sound. Love that the songs are short but packed with sonic quality.

A well rounded Album, starts with a blast that is consistently fading towards the end.

Good, I really admire you guys for that literally playing just two of you. Recently, im bit sick of listening to electronic and inorganic music and sometimes we need to listen to this kind of stuff.

Haven't listened enough yet, but pretty cool. Nice and energetic. Bit of mixed feelings about Jack White's voice sometimes, but overall I enjoyed it.

Cool album. Been awhile since I had a listen.

It was funny listening to this after The Cramps. I guess I'm just not into that kind of mega punk aesthetic but just a little bit of punk is pretty good.

Great record that fades in the back half a little, too many songs sound the same. Still a classic record.

This was good.

Didn't get the hype the first time around, they're good but not great.

I always thought of the White Stripes as a good singles band with filler album tracks, but this was better throughout than expected.

The White Stripes have a raw, stripped-down sound reminiscent of old-time garage bands, but their lyrics are clever and quirky and Jack White's guitar skills are outstanding. They take rock'n'roll down to it's most basic level with an infectious, high-energy sound. Really unique and entertaining, though better in small doses imo -- by the end of 14 songs I was getting just a bit tired of it.

Punkige 60s Rock Variente. Jetzt nicht unbedingt super innovativ, aber sehr gut hörbar.

good album, enjoyed it. Good rock sound. Not as good as their other one in my estimate, but really good overall.

Such a nostalgic listen! Longtime White Stripes fan and I've never listened to this album front to back.

4.5 stars

Some really groovy riffs. Reminds me of the Rolling Stones a little.

I do think it is objectively awesome but not entirely my cup of tea. I do like the lo-fi garage sound. Most of the songs are pretty similar blues revival ideas. Fell In Love With A Girl, the biggest hit, seems like an outlier on the album in terms of style. I think it would have been really cool to see them live during this time period.

Great album. Some really rocking tunes. Hotel Yorba, We’re going to be Friends, and I think I Smell a Rat are tops. This was the start of a big garage rock movement and a ton of two pieces also followed. Probably the last straight up rock band to have that kind of impact.

Ah what a joy! haven't listened to this album since I had half corrupted copies I downloaded from Napster around the release. Just simple stripped to the bones rock and roll songs. So much verve and nostalgia imbued into every track here. Also benefits from having possibly the best rock song ever written in the modern era 'Fell in Love with a Girl' Forgot how much of the back half of this album starts dipping into a bit of grunge-like sound.

I love almost every one of these songs. As an album, it's maybe a little all over the place.

I love this album. So many songs are among my favorite rocks songs. Totally get that Jack White’s voice is not for everyone. But for me he hits the exact right notes. This is just a great rock record. My only minor criticism is I think that it’s one or two songs too long. 4.5/5

211125 20:34 4 / highlights: fell in love with a girl, hotel yorba, we're going to be friends, dead leaves and the dirty ground

empezamos bien el año y la semana. amo que este álbum empieza más fuerte que cachetada de transformer y se mantiene así casi hasta el final. The Union Forever curiosamente me gustó mucho.

Haven’t listened to a whole album of their stuff before, it’s amazing how big they sound consistently

I really didn't want to like this (largely because the biggest song I know from The White Stripes is Seven Nation Army, which I DETEST), but was pleasantly surprised. There's some bluesy rock riffs that make it sound a little like Jack was trying to harness a Zeppelin I sound.

3.9/5 Best Track: Fell In Love With a Girl

garage band rock 2001

-another white stripes album!!!!! -i swear i remember having listened to this album before will doing pottery -its been a while so i will listen again -this album is as good as i remember it -especially fell in love with a girl. definitely one of my favorites -their songs are always so fun -i always enjoy listening to the white stripes -this album has bangers. the white stripes DELIVER! -four star album for me

Notable Songs: Hotel Yorba, Fell in Love with a Girl, The Union Forever, I THINK I SMELL A RAT

Do love the White Stripes. This was big when it came out. The music video for "Fell in Love with a Girl" was made with Lego and was in heavy rotation on MTV. Many peoples introduction to the White Stripes and Jack White. Now "We're Going to be Friends" is used as the theme music for Conan O'Brien's popular podcast "Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend." Likely why it has a resurgence in streams on many sites. Still love that dirty rock sound that Jack White makes.

Such a raw fun energy on this. Starts strong right away with Dead Leaves and my personal Favourite Hotel Yorba. This isn’t a perfect album but it’s still awesome and alongside other 2001 great releases , The Strokes-Is This It and Andrew W.K.’s-I Get Wet, helped breathe fresh life into a floundering rock genre. This will forever have a special spot in my memory and I’ll continue coming back to it. 4 stars

like the punk-ish sound which makes the cover of were going to be friends even more special. pretty solid.

I was super excited to get a WS album, first band I went and saw live WITHOUT MY PARENTS at Festival Hall at 15 years old. Jack White absolutely shredding Joline on the guitar is a core memory for me. I was expecting this to be one that nostalgia automatically affords a 5 star (like the Arctic Monkeys one I got second day in). However, I was actually a bit surprised that I didn't know every song on this album. I still know every word to Hotel Yorba, Fell in Love with a Girl and We're Gonna Be Friends, but a bunch of stuff wasn't super familiar - I think maybe I came in more around Elephant and Get Behind Me, Satan. I actually think Elephant surpasses this album (I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself, The Hardest Button To Button, Seven Nation Army) but I still had an excellent time.

Good to hear again. 'Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground' is probably my favourite White Stripes track.

Very good, The White Strips are great.

Napolian dynamite(:

good album with some amazing songs.

Super nostalgic, made me feel like a teenager again

Loved it.

Rating: 4:0

Pretty good! Very nostalgic. Didn’t listen to them when I was a kid. Maybe I should have.

I like the blown out bass lines throughout the album. Jack has fun delivery as well, on angry songs and also sappy stuff like We’re Going to be Friends.

An excellent album and a masterclass of less is more.

Garage rock at its finest. Anyone who says Meg is a bad drummer hates women.

yassss i like ok suddenly we in a forge

Such a versatile record with great elements of rock, the production is awesome, it explores different themes and Jack White´s vocals are very interesting and different. It could be one or two tracks shorter but overall great album (my first time listening to The White Stripes and I´m not disappointed).

Good but repetitive

I like the energy but I have to be in the mood

One of the better rock albums from the 2000s.

Pretty good and interesting. The technical execution could be improved here and there.

“Fell in Love with a Girl” and “We’re Going to Be Friends” make this a 4 on their own. A lot of the rest was great too, only one or two of the early tracks didn’t work for me.

"The White Stripes' 'White Blood Cells,' released in 2001, is a raw and primal explosion of garage rock brilliance. Jack White's guitar riffs and Meg White's minimalist drumming create a stripped-down yet potent sonic landscape. Tracks like 'Fell in Love with a Girl' and 'Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground' showcase their signature blend of blues and punk influences. The album's lo-fi charm and Jack's soulful vocals make it a garage rock masterpiece. While not as polished as later works, 'White Blood Cells' captures the essence of the White Stripes' uninhibited energy, earning a well-deserved 4/5 rating."

A good one. Always love the loose drumming on white stripes albums. And the guitar sound is just perfect

Moment

Dead Leaves and Dirty Ground Fell in Love with a Girl Expecting The Union Forever We're Going to Be Friends Fuck yeah early 2000s garage punk music. love The White Stripes but never listened to a full album of theirs so this was cool.

Another banger, already knew most the good tunes

Good enough Pop Rock. Nothing exceltional but still entertaining.

Now this is the White Stripes album for me. Jack White took it upon himself to perform CPR on a dying genre of bluesy rock using nothing but his shrill voice and a god-gifted talent in songwriting and guitar-playing. Surprisingly enough, he succeeded. I guess 'Fell in Love with a Girl' could have done it by itself. Meg is also there.

This album fucjing rocks why have I never listened to the white strips before (seven nation army excluded). Yeah this was incredible will be listening to much more of them. Love how loud just a guitar and drums can be -B

I wonder why this is the one they put in the album batch. Yeah it’s an awesome record. Some parts of it feel more out there whereas some moments are just very well written rock songs. Jack White is one of the all time great minds in rock that is for sure. I saw him live and you feel the energy and importance coming from him. Anyways yeah good ass fall album fell in love with This Union Forever he’s singing like the pixies Frank Black on that joint

Dead Leaves on the dirty ground is a very strong start with awesome guitar. Fell in Love with a Girl is also cool. Surprisingly metal for some songs, reminds me of black sabbath. The Same Boy You’ve Always Known sounds like a late Beatles rock song which is fantastic. We’re going to Be Friends is a surprising Folk song, but it actually fits very well. Offend In Every Way is simple, but works super well as a bluesy, rocky guitar song. I Think I Smell a Rat is also Superb, such great guitar. Definitely could have done without Aluminium, experimental track that I’d probably like if it wasn’t for the wacky missed beats throwing it off. Guitar tone is very Stooges-esque which is always a win in my book. Album definitely gets weaker near the end, but none of the songs are ‘bad’. Overall, very good album, definitely one I would consider coming back to. Such an interesting mix of genres that feels like it set the template for 2000s indie rock. 4.5/5

Great sound consistently throughout. Lots of great songs on here. 4*

Love it

I did not care for this at first pass through. But after relistening to some of the songs, and paying more attention to some of the songs. There were some songs on the album I just found plain dumb (Little Room) but I enjoyed it overall. I think I’ll definitely go back to a number of these songs

Top 3 Songs: 1 - Fell in Love With a Girl (4) 2 - We're Going to Be Friends (9) 3 - I Can't Wait (13)

Rocks. Less critically acclaimed (I believe) than the majority of the other white stripes records, this bends genre from rock to blues into psychedelia at times. Real pleasure

This album shreds but is far from perfect. Jack White has some hits that never left but half of the songs are forgettable.

Enjoyable on the first listen through. I could see myself liking them after listening more.

Came into this loving the white stripes. Hearing Fell In Love With a Girl is one of my earliest memories of music and made me want to try guitar myself. Listened to the album through 4 or 5 times yesterday. Solid 4.0

It's a good album, generally a fun listen, but it's quite unfortunate that the two best songs have a combined duration of only four minutes. Some of the other songs passed me by a bit - Nothing on here was bad, some of it was just a little boring. Would have loved to hear more songs with the energy of Fell In Love With a Girl. Either way, I'm sure Elephant is on the list somewhere so I'll be interested to hear that one. Favourite: Fell In Love With a Girl

Solid Rock with interesting twists with their own personalities

Great album!

Fort bon rock des années 2000, un classique. Je pense que je ne l'avais jamais écouté d'un bout à l'autre encore.

SOOOO interesting and jack has a very cool voice. i Love the beats, the feel, the absolute uniqueness . not a 5 only beause i still associate it with tings that keep me from 100% love

I knew this album, but don't think I've ever really listened to it. I really enjoyed it, more then I even thought I would. I described it to Ciara as a harder rocking Beatles album, and feel like there is a lyrical flow/similarity to a lot of the classic rock I love. This album would've been a 5/5 for me if not for "Aluminum," which I thought was basically just noise for the sake of noise. But I enjoyed every other song, the way they flowed together, and the overall vibe transported me back to my pre-teen years.

👍🏼

Oh this is music from my high school days. I've listened to this more than a few times. Elephant is a better record overall, so I'm not quite sure how this is here.

4. It's been years since I listened to the White Stripes as I kind of got tired of their music, but this was good! Will put them in rotation again.

I'll never forget my reaction to hearing The White Stripes for the first time. It was the video for Seven Nation Army on VH1. I had it on in the background while doing homework. I must've been 13-14. I...loathed...everything about this band. The drummer couldn't drum, singer couldn't sing OR PLAY GUITAR, and they didn't even have a bass player. I couldn't fathom why anyone would ever like this band. Fast forward to five years later; some friends and I have just finished a night swim in the neighborhood pool (hopped the fence to get in). I'm saying goodbye to a buddy, and as he starts his car, the song Ball and Biscuit is playing. Completely intrigued, I ask him, "Who's this?" He says, "The White Stripes." I say, "Really? That shitty band who does the Seven Nation Army song?" He says, "Yeah. They have more than just that song." I immediately begin questioning everything I KNEW to be true about music (there was no good music made after 1994, rock and roll was dead, etc.). I went home that night and torrented The White Stripes' entire discography. Within a week, they were my favorite band of all time. Suffice to say, this band changed my world for the better, and I owe them a lot for that. My initial feelings of them melted away pretty quickly, and everything I disliked before became my favorite aspects of the group. Let's talk about some of them in relation to this album, White Blood Cells! Jack's scratchy, whiny vocals are responsible for carrying most of, if not all melody on the album. And the way he approaches recording by limiting to only a number of takes to get the "rawest" sound really works in favor of the simplicity everywhere else. The guitar playing also needs to carry a lot with the lack of a bass player, and thanks to Jack's blend of effects and recording techniques, the low end is filled out fantastically without sacrificing a "guitar sound". Meg...oh Meg. She makes the band. Period. There wouldn't be a White Stripes without her style. It's so easy to dismiss her ability as "she can't play" because it's true, she's not a traditionally taught drummer. But she's a human metronome, and she READS Jack so well. Their chemistry as a duo is nearly unmatched across the entire rock landscape. Their sound relies entirely on the way she plays drums. And it's beautiful. Anyway, some of the songs on this record are among the band's best, and while the album can drag a bit in the latter half, Dead Leaves is a mind-blowing, heavy opener, followed up by Hotel Yorba, a cute folk tune you play with your SO when walking in the park. Fell in Love with a Girl might be the best hit song ever under two minutes. And of course, We're Going to Be Friends is up there with Jack's best songwriting, and forever immortalized in Napoleon Dynamite's opening credits. This is a great reference point for any songwriter, including myself. On those days when you feel like your song or record needs MORE, listen to some White Stripes. Sometimes the best songs are the simplist songs. Simple does NOT equal bad.

Thoroughly enjoyed this one start to finish. I had forgotten what a lightning bolt this album was. There aren’t really any low spots on the whole record. Top 3 Fell in Love With a Girl Dead Leaves and the Dirty Grass We’re Going to be Friends

I remember hearing songs from this album at the time but don’t think I listened to the full album until Seven Nation Army came out. It has humour and good lyrics. Sounds raw. Some massive hits too but maybe a few songs could’ve missed the cut. Nostalgic music for the early 2000’s.

Fav: Now Mary LF: Hotel Yorba Kinda one note, but it's a damn good note, mid 8

Good stuff

Pretty great album that could have done without the last handful of songs. The first 10 songs are 5-star quality though.

Amazing what can be done with just one guitar and drums

Simple in all the right ways. This one holds a special place in my heart, I remember being enamored with Fell in Love with a Girl and it’s crazy Lego video, it opened the door for me to explore so many other great bands. The striped down guitar, drums, piano sound is so honest and refreshing. It spawned so many more bands who figured it could be that easy, the garage band ethos. Not one bad song on this album, it’s hard to choose the highlights. My only negative is that the songs lack a bit of cohesion, like they were pieced together from different ideas and different times rather than crafted collectively. Teetering on 4 vs. 5, so I’d say 4.5.

Simultaneously raucous and reserved, White Blood Cells is the White Stripes' first bold statement. Jack White finds a way to flex his knowledge of American music history while carving out his own sound around Meg's understating drumming, exactly as primal and metronomic each song demands. The album extends alternative rock's loud-quiet-loud dynamic to its entire tracklist, oscillating between distorted garage rattlers and tender acoustic numbers. The swagger here is a little unsteady compared to the bravado to come one album, two years and seven nations later, but it still sounds pretty sure of the potency of its particular blend of folk, blues, and rock 'n' roll. Standouts: "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" is one of the best White Stripes tracks. "Fell in Love With a Girl" is a firecracker of a pop song. Sleepers: Didn't Jack Johnson cover "We're Going to Be Friends?" It sounds more authentically schoolyard-sweet here. "This Union Forever" broods in a very cool way. Stinkers: The album is very frontloaded and falls off a bit in its second half, but only the not-as-cool-as-it-thinks "Aluminum" feels like a real dip. Four out of four boys you've always known

I always thought The White Stripes were okay, but this listen through made me appreciate them a lot more, and I found a new-to-me song that I like a lot!

Healthy listen I liked some of the songs

Idk it’s the white stripes what do you want me to say

One banger after another. God bless Meg White

A fun album. I recognised more songs than I expected

Fun, energetic, short songs, great hits.

Guays. Detroit garage rock de los 2000's.

i like it, not all songs, but the vibes were there.

Hotel Yorba Fell in Love with a Girl We’re Going to Be Friends Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground The Same Boy You’ve Always Known I’m Finding it Harder to Be a Gentleman The Union Forever Little Room Expecting

Vond wel nice album, sommige beter dan anderen. Verder niet veel over te zeggen. Was m’n eerste keer white stripes album. 3,5

Hieno levy. Messevästi helisee. Useempia kuuntelukertoja jo aiemminkin takana ja vielä ei kyllästytä

I found this album to be very simple, yet very potent as well! Just about every track is a short 2-3 minutes, but each one brings a much different and interesting sound to the table, with anything from folk-type songs and ballads to garage rock bangers appearing in the track list. When it’s all said and done, I had an absolute blast listening to this album, and I will make sure to explore more of the Stripes’ discography! 8/10

Good album. Easy to listen to with some good songs.

A classic album by The White Stripes, White Blood Cells explores themes of love, hope, betrayal, and paranoia, which were inspired by the increased media attention they were receiving. There is something about the distorted guitars and pounding drums that is so comforting. Best: Fell In Love With A Girl Worst: Aluminium

En general el álbum está bueno, no lo siento súper innovador pero tampoco repetitivo o malo. La onda general del álbum estuvo buena. Canciones favoritas: i think i smell a rat, unión forever, fell in love with a girl, dead leave and the dirty ground, offend in every way. 8/10

Good stuff as usual from the White Stripes. Not quite as good overall as Elephant.

Back to basics rock and roll! Jack and Meg provide a fuller sound than you would think as a duo and the sound is mature and well performed. The best songs are the ones were the energy is up and they let loose and this might be their most enjoyable effort.

There’s one song where Jack White sounds like Paul McCartney, the sweet one about children. The rest are more typical. Great talent.

4.5/5. Name a more iconic duo, I’ll wait.

I'm generally meh on Jack White's schtick, but this is a genuinely good album.

The White Stripes are a bit hit and miss for me. I love their style and their hits are top tier, but a bunch of songs on this album felt like filler to some extent. Still a good listen and I think both musicians are incredibly skilled.

Big time album

In 2003, after jamming out to "Seven Nation Army" on the radio for what was probably the fiftieth time, I'd heard that the album Elephant was really great as a whole, so I went out and bought it. I listened to it in its entirety once, and it wasn't for me, but I'd still listen to "Seven Nation Army" pretty regularly. Later in the aughts, I got turned onto Jack White's side project, The Dead Weather, whom I really enjoyed listening to. I got to see them from the front row at a small-ish venue right before Horehound came out, and it kicked ass. I also listened to Blunderbuss when it came out, and I loved it, but I haven't gotten around to revisiting it. TLDR: I didn't care for the one White Stripes album that I'd listened to, but I've enjoyed other projects from Jack White. I wasn't quite sure how I was going to feel about this album, but I really enjoyed it. I loved the varied blues-influenced sounds, and this album is full of really fun songs. Just like The Strokes' Is This It, The White Stripes aren't exactly reinventing the wheel here, but they excel at executing their vision. The guitar playing is fantastic, and the crashing cymbals and drum beats are their perfect companion. Jack White's voice can go from screechy and manic to slow and melodic at a moment's notice, and that helps him and Meg craft an album that has a cohesive sound without sounding repetitive. It's clear that Jack and Meg really have a passion for their sound, and that they know how to turn that passion into fun. This is a great album, and it was a perfect one to come up right after Is This It in my rotation. Favorite track: a dead heat between "Hotel Yorba" and "We're Going to be Friends."

Enjoyable! Hotel Yorba =😀👍. Fell in love with a girl - remember liking this but hadn’t heard it in years.

Never heard this one before. I liked the production. Songs were pretty uniform with the exception of We’re Gonna Be Friends. Would do 3.5 but I’ll round up.

Very good album with some hard rocking songs and excellent guitar work. Not their best album in my opinion but a strong effort nonetheless.

Love this album!

Love it

Fuckit, I'm doing something different: I'm listening to Redd Blood Cells, the remixed version by Steve McDonald which adds a bass guitar track to each song. It works well sometimes, and sounds unnecessary at other times. Either way, the underlying album is real bloody good. Hard rock was not popular in the 2000s, but the White Stripes clearly didnt care, cuz they play their asses off on this record. I don't care what anyone says, Meg White is a great drummer and this sound wouldn't work at all without her. It's a great album from a great band.

icónico, discardo

buen album :)

Excellent

Jack White’s career is officially too good and this album no longer stands out for me, but still great.

I’m our dirtbag era

Been a while since I've been back to this album. Always enjoyed the texture of The White Stripes and this album is full of it. Album has a little bit of everything: certified jams (Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground, Fell In Love With a Girl), folky indie (We're Going to Be Friends), sloggy grunge (Aluminum). Not perfect, but a solid listen front to back.

A very solid album. Love the White Stripes guitar sound it's very unique. Would definitely listen to this album many more times

Another Stripes album with so many classics! Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground, Hotel Yorba, Fell in Love with a Girl (my fav), We're Going to be Friends, The Union Forever sticks out as one that never really did before, but now I need to hear him play it live. Shit is dark af. Comparing to Elephant it's not as good, but love some of the deeper tracks that it has. Jack White fucks.

Garage rock husband wife do with lots of hard beat drumming and distorted guitar riffs. Jack White's talent on display here as front man and producer. Creative, raw, foot-stomping, fun ("Fell In Love With a Girl"), sentimental and Beatles-esque ("We're Going To Be Friends").

Short and very sweet! Okay, not their best work together, but this mix of blues, rock and 60s psychedelia works a treat as far as I'm concerned.

manages to wring some more juice out of garage rock with exceptional hooks and good lyrics

Lot of energy in these songs, has the vibe of early garage rock and punk, but with a dash of modern complexity. I probably wouldn’t be able to tell what year this album came out if I didn’t already know. Really enjoyable album.

holy shit the napoleon dynamite song. This song reminds me of hockey. the vibe is necessarily fraternal but there is definitely some Caucasian rowdiness at play here.

i like the white stripes. garage rock is nice. guitar tones have the right crunch and overdrive. simple and furious. “fell in love with a girl” is a legendary single. “dead leaves” knows how to pull heart levers. rock n roll foreva.

ingen 7-nation army :(

I haven't really had the chance to truly get into the White Stripes except for, of course, Seven Nation Army, so this album was my first true White Stripes experience. And it was pretty good. No like really good. The garage and blues rock fusion that occurs on this album is so good. Jack's guitar playing is truly great on this album. The folkier songs I also need to shout out as they truly are pretty good. Not the best folkier songs I've heard on a rock album but the guitar playing is still really good. Pretty much every song is great, with the album just getting better and better as time goes on. The line between garage rock and blues rock gets intertwined really well by this point and it all sounds great. My favorite tracks were "We're Going to Be Friends", "Offend In Every Way", and "I Can't Wait", although pretty much all of the songs are great. However "Aluminum" takes a bit of a detour into Black Sabbath-esque riffs that has slight twinges of psychedelia and noise rock that I frankly think doesn't work all too well and is the worst song on the album. I also think the closer, "The Collector", is also pretty mid but is still passable. It's just a bit of a detour using the organ that is fine but does contrast with the rest of the record in my opinion. Overall though, this bluesy-garage rock album is pretty good. The guitar playing is impressive in almost every song and the folkier detours work really well. I'd give this album a very solid 9/10. I really did enjoy it.

If you like the hives this is great. I can imagine some will hate it

Not as strong as elephant, but a really nice, inventive rock record for an era that needed it. Has a great roots rock and roll sound mixed with more modern indie.

I was actually expecting to hate this, given its vintage, but I was actually moderately surprised. Probably one of the few albums where the singles are considerably worse than the album. What does annoy me is how it spends half its time being a fairly gentle, skinny-jeans/plaid shirt hipster album, and the other half being an aggressive, fight-out-side-a-nightclub-because-you-looked-at-the-girl-I-fancy vibe. I think The White Stripes owe an awful lot to The Dandy Warhols.

A little less polished then their later stuff but with some phenomenal blues influences

Being familiar with The White Stripes & Jack White, I went in with fairly high expectations, but was still pleasantly surprised with how the duo were able to keep me energized and entertained through all the B sides. Seriously, there are some anthemic gems in through this and its worth a full listen, especially if you were feeling like you "got" the band prior and had a muted interest Highlights: - Hotel Yorba - The Union Forever - I Can Learn

Classic. Great Lyrics. Fantastic Tunes.

Jack White's voice isn't my favorite when I hear it for the first time in a while. But any gripe I have with it is quickly forgotten, because it's right for the music and the music feels good.

Really good album. Nothing I can really say, it’s just solid. Not so good that it’s shocking tho, there are a ton of albums before and after that are very similar (Specifically the 90’s Grunge Scene)

Iconic style here. Jack White has such a presence in all of his projects. White stripes probably have a five star album this one is not it however very much worthless

I really liked this one a lot. Can’t believe I’ve never heard it before. Bonus points for the theme song to Conan’s podcast.

I got married to We’re Going to be Friends so this one is always going to have a soft spot for me. On balance I do think the album is uneven with phenomenal singles and okay-to-great album tracks but my god those singles are phenomenal. Anyone who says Meg White is a poor drummer is a sexist dingus who can’t count to four.

Wow, this album rocks. The first half was all songs I knew, but didn't know I knew. The second half wasn't as good, but still great. Good work Whites.

I mean… it’s the white stripes. I’m sure they were a breath of fresh air in the music scene during 2001. Since then, so many bands have copied their sound, and it became so widespread. That being said, this album rocks. Also contains one of my favorite tracks ever, “We’re Going to Be Friends”

a modern day take on garage rock, this album slaps. a great mix of acoustic interludes with crunchy, driving guitar aplenty. if this music doesn’t get your heart pumping, you may in fact already be dead. highlights: “dead leaves and the dirty ground”, “hotel yorba”, “fell in love with a girl”, “i can’t wait”.

About what I expected from this album. I like the hits a lot, and there were some other stand outs on the album as well. Pretty good. My favourite songs were Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground, Fell in Love With a Girl, and I Think I Smell a Rat.

it’s a great rock album

A fun, stripped down rock album. Worth another listen.

An excellent debut. I listened when it came out and the same songs jumped out for me this time too. It’s a nicer listen without all the hype.

Hard to argue with this. Half a dozen classic WS tracks and its insanely listenable all the way through. Less is more.

Noice👌 A few songs were a bit too aggressive for my taste but all in all, very good classic vibes. I feel like I might've recognized a song or two. I liked several songs, but my fave was We're going to be friends. It was very simple and wholesome. Also the Hard to be a gentleman(I may have gotten the name wrong) song was funny XD

Liked this despite never really being a the white striped girlie

This record is just so fun! Just two pals (are they siblings? are they married? do they hate each other? who knows back in 2001?) playing loud and loose and making a joyous little racket, with some lovely softer moments as well

There was a time when I was committed to the White Stripes. This album was in heavy rotation during that stretch, but it wasn't my favorite either. It's a four star White Stripes record. Depending on how you feel about their whole sound bump that up or down on your personal rock-o-meter.

Jack White is a legend.

I wish there was bass.

Not their best but still has some very strong songs.

Yea primitive sounding is a good descriptor of this album. Very chunky in parts, with Meg's sparse and boom style drums. Little Room plays this to its highest effect. It also adds in some genre expiramentation with the acoustic tunes. Aluminum is basically all down beats. Cool garage beat down of an album. not a 5 for me but this would be gasoline for a more impressionable person.

Great album - even better when you consider it's just two people.

I’ve always liked Jack’s raw music approach This might be my favorite album by them

Rocking! Reminded me of the late 90s

Ah yes, my old friend Jack White. It doesn't get any noisier than starting with Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground. Hotel Yorba is a White Stripes staple, bouncy and playful, with definitely only two musicians. Fell In Love With A Girl is the quintessential early White Stripes song and one that I didn't like back in 2001 when I first heard it. It, and Jack White aura, have grown on me immensely well. I was dumb back then! And finally, We're Going To Be Friends makes me want to listen to Conan's podcast. Solid album!

I really enjoyed this. We're Going To Be Friends has been on many of my playlists. -1 star for Little Room and Aluminum.

Minä pidän White stripesista ja Jack Whitesta. Toi ääni ja tyyli puree. Indien suunnannäyttäjä, ydin, tosin toki osaltaan paljon velkaa edeltäjilleen. Sopivan pituisia biisejä. Vähän hajanainen kokonaisuus kyllä.

Stands up well, better than I thought it would

Solid 4. No more. No less.

The White Stripes are one of those bands that I've always thought I should be into, but I've never really liked more than a select few of their songs. After listening to the full album, I think I understand them better. I really like the chunky guitar tones throughout the album, and they put out a lot of sound for just two musicians, and the lyrical style complements the music well. I wish that more of the songs on the album had the sort of bouncy feel of Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground, but overall it's a good album 4/5

As on the last White Stripes album we were sent, I’m amazed at the range of sounds and styles Jack White generates, all within the boundaries of “Garage Rock”. You get the country twang of "Hotel Yorba", the spooky "Union Forever", the McCartney-esque acoustic ballad “We are going to be Friends", and the ultra-heavy flamenco of "I think I Smell a Rat". Jack is a great song-writer and way ahead of anyone in this genre. His ability to keep it fresh and catchy with only a guitar and piano and a drummer who let's face it, is no Keith Moon, is amazing.

Rocking good stuff from Jack and Meg. 4 stars.

good stuff

Can't help but enjoy The White Stripes

This was the album where they got super ubiquitous. This is good solid alt-rock or however you want to peg it: the place it comes from feels authentic.

Great alternative/garage record. Jack White is the real deal though, I don't care too much for Meg White. Cool riffs and nice hooks, hard rocking songs, but also some more tender ones. Favorite lyrics: - Soft hair and a velvet tongue. I want to give you what you give to me. - The cost no man can say. But you gotta love me. - The coldest blue ocean water. Cannot stop my heart and mind. From burning. Key tracks: Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground, Hotel Yorba, Fell In Love With A Girl, We're Going To Be Friends, I Think I Smell A Rat 8 out of 10

Two people making an excellent racket.

Classic

The person who made this list really loves the White Stripes, I guess. Can't blame em.

It doesnt quite maintain the momentum of some of their others but its still very listenable

Jack White is a musical genius. This is a damn good album. Though I would say as far as his discography goes this falls fairly middle of the road. My top tracks in order are; "Fell in Love with a Girl", "Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground", "I Think I Smell A Rat", and "We're Going To Be Friends". Though I do not think there is a bad song on the album. Great album, just not quite a 5 star when I compare it to other White Stripes albums.

amazing album, doesn’t have same impact as when it came out though

Thanks mom Never realized there was no bass on the album, but it is the very distinctive sound of the White Stripes. Reminds me of going to science summer camp. 3.5/5 but round up for nostalgia.

Love this album

Great album one of the best straightforward are rock albums from the 00’s

White Blood Cells is a simpler Whit Stripes record, still very good, eventually verging into reverence. I'm starting to think that Jack White may be incapable of a perfect album. And it's not even bloating with filler that's the problem: This one's forty minutes. Anyway, every project remains a worthwhile listen, the hits don't stand out as sore at all.

The White Stripes being themselves - or should that be himself with sidekick? Unfortunately if you have heard one of their albums you have heard all of them - they seem to be capable of plagiarising themselves. Despite that I liked it.

Witness the birth of the last rock star of the new millennium.

Yeah, I mean. It's good. Is it the best of Jack White's nonsense? Probably not. Is it the worst of Jack White's nonsense? Probably not. But it's a solid, lo-fi rock album with a lot of clever lyrics (and some really stupid lyrics but that's just par for the course for ol' Jackie it seems).

A pleasant, short listen. Nothing groundbreaking imo, but good stuff still My stand outs: Fell In Love With a Girl, I Think I Smell a Rat, This Protector

Love the energy, like the vibe, but it isn't quite seven nation army yet. Still pretty darn good and as I recall shook things up a bit. I do like We're Going to Be Friends, it's sweet, sue me. 3.5

Dirty garage retro blues from Jack (and Meg) White. This was the 3rd album but the one that made them big on the indie scene. Still sounds really fresh. The sparse arrangement highlights the brilliant guitar from JW.

Tekið upp á 7 dögum og það heyrist. Flott stöff inn á milli samt.

I feel as though I'm betraying myself a little bit, but I'm actually struggling between a 4 and a 5 star on this one. Obviously those are both good scores, but I figured going in this would be an easy 5 star. However, once actually listening I do have some faults, such as despite most of the songs being relatively short, it does go on a little long, making the "oomph" of the music lose it's touch near the end, and some songs just aren't very notable and blend together. I think I'm going to have to go with the idea this is a very high 4 star, but not quite that 5 star material. Perhaps one of the other White Stripes albums on here.

Elephant is a better album. This album has a more grunge sound to it that I’m not as fond of. But I still like what The White Stripes did.

A very enjoyable listen. Hard to pick a favourite but Dead Leave and the Dirty Ground really sets the mood. The other songs that caught my attention are just the more well known ones like Hotel Yorba, and I Think I Smell A Rat but the album probably needs a few more listens.

I found the album more varied than I expected. Hard to believe the album it's over 20 years old. The songs are short, punchy and to the point. They work well and I don't think any of them overstayed their welcome. I imagine "We're Going To Be Friends" would have been tiresome if it went on and on, but it did not, so there you go. I think I liked this even more than the other album "Elephant." Good stuff.

The White Stripes third album is a strong guitar driven release that shows that sometimes the simple ways are best. Pretty much driven by Jack’s guitar / vocal combination and Meg’s drums every song on here is direct and to the point with nothing clocking in over 3 minutes and 40 seconds. I’m not even a huge garage rock fan but still really dug this album. Favorite tracks: “Hotel Zorba”, “The Union Forever”, “We’re Going to Be Friends”, “I Can’t Wait” and “I Think I Smell a Rat.”

I like the White Stripes and I like pretty much every track on this album, but after a while the garage riffs and drums get a little repetitive. Don't get me wrong, the album is a rocker, is highly creative, and deserves the accolades, I just can't give it a 5 because of the repetitiveness, even if it's good repetitiveness. It could also be that Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground starts with a ton of feedback, which I can't stand. Sets the wrong mood for me personally. These kids and their loud rock and roll!! [shakes fist at ceiling]. That said, lots of good stuff on this album. Favorite tracks: Hotel Yorba, I'm Finding it Harder to be a Gentleman, Fell In Love With a Girl (absolutely impossible to understand without the lyrics, but super-cool song), We're Going to Be Friends (I like the mood of this song), Offend in Every Way, Now Mary.

Love the raw sounds and the punk vibe. Awesome to hear this one so many years later knowing Jack White's projects have taken him all over the place physically and musically since it's release.

An excellent adventure in core rock music. Something that this world clearly doesn't have enough of! I like the minimalist presentation (though it's no minimalist when it comes to sound levels), creating good music out of rock's core constituents. P.S. Elephant is even better.

Je mets 4 parce que Elephant existe

I was surprised that I could even listen to this whole album on Election Day but I got through it. It wasn’t quite as good as elephant but it was still a nice listen from start to finish. Fell in love with a girl and I think we’re gonna be friends are standouts even though that second one is waaaay overplayed in indie movies

-Big fat guitar chugging along in "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" -"Hotel Yorba" is a very upbeat fun tune. Love the lyrical rhythm with the bug guitar and cymbals in the chorus -Very gritty version of "Fell In Love With a Girl" -"I Think I Smell a Rat" is a short, quick catchy tune with some cool distorted guitar -Lots of cool guitar riffs throughout the album -Cool dirty sound to the album

Early White Stripes is so good. Nothing clocks in longer than like 3:30. Crazy this is over 20 years old now.

Good enough

classic, many bangers

Love the white stripes sound, could listen to it all day

Mostly distorted guitar and drums but some clean tones in there too. I think I had heard most of these songs before with knowing they were all from this one album. I really enjoyed it, but I wouldn’t say it’s one of the best ever

Great album, classic White Stripes.

Very good album. Favourite track are 'Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground', 'Hotel Yorba'. 4,5/5

Great album, but deducting one star because it’s the second time an album of theirs has been shown.

Having seldom given the White Stripes the time of day proper before, I found myself rocking and enjoying this almost instantly, despite largely thinking of them as a band of a few hits and otherwise standard okay okay alt rock band. I was surprised how much blues and noise influence was present and cleverly executed throughout the album, all tasty and catchy.

This album made me realize elephant isn’t a 4. That albums is so fucking good. This a lil folkier is cool

Nice, this is far-and-away my favorite White Strips album. I've listened to it recently and it definitely holds up, though my opinion on Jack White has soured in recent years. Update: This was good still. The last few songs kind of drag, they don't seem to have the development that the first 13 or so have, but it's not a huge issue. "I Think I Smell A Rat" is still one of my favorite WS songs, and of course "The Union Forever" jams. I have a soft spot for "Little Room" in how simple and childish it is.

Þessi varð eiginlega instant klassík á sínum tíma. Svo hrátt, mikill bílskúr í þessu.

I thought they only did Seven Nation Army but they are a very talented duo! I’ve been in a bit of an album slump and I was starting to despair. This album brought me out of the depths. It was a red light at the end of the tunnel. In your face and doesn’t apologize for rocking. The very definition of a power couple, made bittersweet knowing that their marriage didn’t last, but maybe that adds to the beauty of what they created while together. I didn’t know they still made rock music like this. Would’ve been 5 stars but the singer’s scratchy voice started to get on my nerves a bit towards the end. Bonus piano duet at the very end perfectly wraps up the synergy that produced this great album. Favorites: Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground, Expecting, the Union Forever, I Think I Smell A Rat, Aluminum, I Can Learn

thick sound for a 2 piece, interesting take on stripped back rock n roll

geagrqerg

It’s solid the end of the album gets a bit samey though 4/5.

I really liked this - a great variety of music and really energetic.

I like garage indie rock

I actually had a good time listening to this again, which I wasn't expecting after how put-off I was by that other White Strips one that was on the list. I think this album is the beginning and end of all I need from Jack White in my life. It's really enjoyable, melodic, and varied enough to hold my attention. His voice is his voice and I find it less irritating here than in other instances. Which speaking of... I just listened to the first thirty seconds of the first track on his brand new album and, swear to God, it made me think of a Korn song without the 7 string guitars. I don't know what's going on over there. But he's playing Asheville this week and I'm sure it's long since sold out. C'est la vie.

Very fun album, some great tunes on here

Erster song schonmal banger Paar geile songs Aber auch ein weirder

Yeah liked this. Good balance of heaviness to be enjoyable

Best album from them imho.

Overrated 👍🏾

A stellar example of what the white stripes are capable of. Although it isnt my favourite album from there discography, it is undoubtedly a genre defining album Best: dead leaves Worst: aluminium

Classic!

Jack white’s tour de force. The album has all the sass and pizazz of the Detroit shows that he was brought up on. I will say however that in terms of lyrical content, there’s not a whole lot to offer. It’s clear that the chemistry between the two band members has soured quite a bit, and it’s hard to hear someone play songs about themselves. Overall, a great punch in the face or morning coffee kind of album!

We're Going To Be Friends was a nice throwback song. They've always impressed me with how much they can do with two instruments. 4/5 for the nostalgia vibes + I've never actually listened to this album all the way through until now

I like the guitar on the first song. I'm not as familiar with the white stripes other than their popular songs. I had no idea they were a duo. reading up on their history it's really interesting their dynamic and they way they presented themselves as a group. I do enjoy the guitar on this album in it's entirety. we are gonna be friends is the song for me from this album.

Solid Rock album all the way through. Great guitar, drums, and Jack White vocals

My favorite stripes album in college. On relisten it’s still pretty great. A bit long and there’s a couple tracks I don’t love but it’s a great rock album.

musically interesting

Had a few great songs mixed in with a lot of stuff I could skip.

Great album with many songs I like by the White Stripes

A little long and falls off at the end but solid album. Overall really enjoyed

Good but not their best

Big guitar riffs and fun lyrics, loved it

garage rock isn’t my thing i guess but the songs i like i really like. “fell in love with a girl” is amazing and im glad i was introduced to this

High highs but some filler towards the end. 8/10

Never listened to this all the way through before. It’s enjoyable, but it peaks a bit early before losing its way a little. The singles are all absolute bangers and no album can be (or should be) all peaks, but a few tunes feel a little too much like dreary filler when compared to the raw genius of the hits.

A really enjoyable album which captures the energy of The White Stripes, creating a lot of sound from little more than drums, guitar and effects pedal. The whole project is a blast and was made fast - recording took just a week. There's something raw in Jack White's compositions, as if the tracks are just bursting out of him and he has to get them captured or another song will just push the former out of the way to be lost forever. There's an indiscipline to it which is magical. Indeed, don’t over think it - White’s whole manifesto is captured in Little Room: ‘Well, you're in your little room And you're working on something good But if it's really good You're gonna need a bigger room And when you're in the bigger room You might not know what to do You might have to think of how you got started Sitting in your little room’ This shouldn't work - but it does.

Listened Before? Y Okay so.... it took me a while to appreciate this album. I actually quite enjoy it now. It's not too long, and it's pretty simple while maintaining a lot of complexity. Good stuff! Added to Library? Y Songs added to Playlist? We're Going To Be Friends, Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground

More twangy then I thought it would be, but Jack really carries it with his songwriting chops, unpolished voice, and energetic riffs

Good music, know most of the songs from listening when I was a kid.

While I wasn't on the music scene in my toddler years, I can only imagine the jolt this sharp, directed LP delivered at the time. Clean-cut, searing guitar riffs pulling from both the blues and grunge over tight, effective drums - nothing more and nothing less. Compressing De Stijl's nascent lo-fi idealism into a guitar-driven gut punch, there's no instrumental or production ornamentation necessary here. Whether slow-burning or white-knuckling in their delivery, the Whites' were at their absolute prime and the result is one of the best rock albums of the century.

Solid album, like most of the white stripes work

I dig it. The White Stripes have effectively created a whole new genre of music with their frenetic musical style and sly lyrical tomfoolery. They are the perfect music for a time capsule - if you needed to encapsulate the early 2000’s in one singular sound The White Stripes would do it perfectly.

Rockin tunes

A couple rough ones on here (Aluminum??), but overall a solid album.

Garage-rock y yo creo que también grunge y algo punky... Me ha gustado.

Good album, I enjoy the white stripes but only so much. I don't understand the hype around Jack White.

This album is fantastic

Good music, enjoyed a lot of the songs. Wish the vocals were stronger but it's still good.

Highlights: I'm Finding it Harder to Be a Gentleman, Now Mary. I thought I was pretty familiar with this one, loved the singles on it, but it's very nice to get reacquainted with it like an old friend.

The album starts and ends strong! There are some tracks in between I’ll probably never warm to, but overall I enjoyed the menacing guitars and Jack White’s honest voice.

Love most of Jack White's stuff though I hadn't actually heard this album before. Good but doesn't necessarily stand out from other White Stripes albums IMO

Não reconheci o hit, mas funcionou bem. Boa condução.

I remember a lot of these tracks from the past. It’s noisy, it’s pretentious, and it’s so effing good. I think I like it now more than I did 20 years ago.

The music is very good, but the lyrics and the vocals don't match the energy.

Simple yet wonderful

Like nearly all record-collection rock, White Blood Cells is simultaneously corking fun and hugely frustrating. It also manages to demonstrate that most conspicuous of paradoxes: in its attempts to sound as authentic as possible, it serves principally to sound inauthentic. That opening may suggest that I view White Blood Cells and the White Stripes harshly. Please let me assure you that is not the case. The album is a 4-starrer and much of it is obviously great. The White Stripes were very much the diamonds of the garage rock revival, and their best songs (Fell in Love with a Girl, Seven Nation Army, yes, their most famous ones) were the best songs of that movement. Jack White has proven that he can consistently bash out a riff to rank alongside those of Tony Iommi or Angus Young. But I can't deny that I felt slightly weary listening to the album. Here's the issue, as I see it: the White Stripes don't so much declare their influences as advertise them. This is not bizarre in itself. These influences, a melding of Son House and Loretta Lynn and the Sonics and the Stooges, are extremely common; indeed, those represented genres each form a rich, deep seam of American music. Again, this is not an oddity. However, the White Stripes have clung to their predecessors so firmly that the listener wonders if the White Stripes could release a song that wasn't beholden to Muddy Waters or the 13th Floor Elevators. Isn't rock n roll meant to be about disrespecting your elders? There is an Italian concept called sprezzatura. Stemming from the late Renaissance work on civilised behaviour The Book of the Courtier, sprezzatura can be defined as studied carelessness, the projection of nonchalance in order to hide effort and make skilful acts appear easy (sprezzatura is most famously employed within fashion, where the wearer will make deliberate mistakes in their garb to show that they don't give a damn; Gianni Agnelli, the owner of Fiat, was perhaps the 20th century's greatest practitioner of sartorial sprezzatura, with the wearing of his watch over his shirt cuff becoming his signature flourish). That's what's missing from this album: insouciance. When the White Stripes bragged about recording the album in 4 days in order to sound unpolished, you couldn't help sense Jack White nerdily showing us his workings.

Very nice vibe

Most of this I quite liked. Especially Union Forever and We're Going to be friends but really disliked Aluminum.

This some really lovely stuff

Really good album, Jack White fucking rocks

3.7 - raw and less bluesy than most White Stripes I'd heard, but a nice listen nonetheless. Really enjoy the stripped down nature of "We're Going to Be Friends"
