Reviews (page 13 of 13)

Couple interesting songs but it needed more snap

Smooth, nice background music. Would not come back to.

not my thing

Not really my jam. Too cheesy …

Just ok

Interesting, but ultimately didn’t pull anything for me.

Only 4 songs? Walk On By was a tedious rendition of classic. Hyperbolicayllab… lacks energy and the production feels dull and a little muted. One Woman is a sweet song but doesn’t break new ground. By the Time I get to Phoenix wow, that’s quite a story in the windup. Of course Hayes has great R&B vocals, but… ho hum.

I was doing fine till I hit the last track. Which is a 3 minute song stretched out to 19 minutes.

It started out okay. But man did this thing drag by the end. Why did he feel the need for a 18 minute "song" to end the album? I didn't get the second half of this thing at all.

Did not like it.

It was okay but the songs just went on for way too long.

fine but I don't think I will be listening to this again

Had some grooves for sure, but not really my jam. Skipping standouts again because this album was just 4 long songs.

Cool, a little drawn out (the songs) but I liked the soulfulness

Parts of this album were enjoyable, but it was a bit flat for me overall. I could have done without the 8+ minute spoken word intro to an 18 minute track. 2.5

Sexy but overly long. Skipped a fair bit to be honest

Bit boring for me

An interesting take on long-form jazz and balladry, but lacking in melodic material to prevent the LP from falling into repetition.

Maybe it's that I don't much like soul music, or maybe I just don't like my soul hot buttered (or maybe I just don't have a soul, who can say?), but this veered towards 1-star territory for me. Sorry, Chef. The tracks go on far too long and all but one of them are covers (and not necessarily improvements on the originals). Some of the instrumentation is good though.

I really tried to like this. I tried getting myself into the first song, and all that jazz, but it just kept going, and going, and that's when I realized I still had two-and a-half more songs like this. The third song was fine, because at least it was normal song length, but then the beast that was the last song just never stopped, and I couldn't even get through it, for the first time on an album while doing this daily album thing. I decided perhaps I just didn't like the song itself, but I went back to the versions this song was covering, and the massive fifteen minutes of difference in length really showed me the filler this album can have. Perhaps I just don't understand soul, that seems to be the case with a lot of albums similar to this, but I really don't like this one. Only getting a two star because that third song I saw the appeal somewhat.

Interesting listen, not really my kind of music though.

Too slow for me. Seems to be the 70s equivalent of modern day R&B. I can see why some people like it, but it didn’t capture me.

Without context it’s hard to appreciate this as a “landmark” album. I liked the sound but lost interest as the songs ran 3 or 4 times longer than necessary. Made it feel like background music.

R&B, soul, 1969. "Hot Buttered Soul" is not properly a terribile record but unfortunately I found it really monotone and boring. The songs on it are niether pleasant nor unforgettable and probably too long. In conclusion this album is nothing special.

I appreciate it, but not my jam.

Ok at times but the length was a real struggle for me. 2.5 rounded down

A bit too much talking

It was okay until the last song with the long monologue. Did not enjoy that at all.

Mooie stem, maar werd wat saai

Sfeervol, maar ook wel aardig langdradig

Sin pena ni gloria

Four LOOOONG tracks. Presages the sloooow 70s. Hayes has an undeniable instrument, but it is put to mediocre use on this album.

An ok funky, soul album. It’s mainly grooving instrumentals with a few moments of singing. Didn’t find it too great but it did ease through in the background. 5.0/10

I thought I'd love this one, but actually, what I'm thinking is that it's self-indulgent and a bit boring.

Not my thing.

Nothing that memorable. I don't mind this type of music in general....only think holding it back from being a 1. Otherwise it was just there... 1.5/2

couple interesting covers but not really my thing

First thing: it's much too jazz-oriented for my personal taste. Somebody who likes 1960's nightclub jazz would probably enjoy this more. Second thing: It's incredibly, ponderously sexist. The ten-minute sermon leading into"By The Time I Get To Phoenix" is a doozy, but I was already gritting my teeth at the patronizing "One Woman." Maybe some GUY who likes 1960's nightclub jazz would find this fun, but it was excruciating for me. It's slow, it's sexist, there are virtuoso jazz people doing virtuoso things for many minutes at a time... I did not like it.

Yeah, look, Chef, if it takes you 16min to butter your soul, isn’t it cold by that point? This album makes me wonder if all Pentecostal preachers are doing Issac Hayes impersonations in the pulpit. A star for that fun thought.

Alright album nothing special or standout to me. I found the intro to "By the Time I get to Phoenix" somewhat boring. Which is a shame for a track which takes up nearly a third of the album length.

I think I can recognize this as a landmark soul album but what do I know. Even so, this is just another jam band album of a different genre. Too much talking and exploration. No thanks. Isaac Hayes only wrote one of the four songs. One Woman tells us the other woman is making a man do wrong. Oh what a fucking cop out from the patriarchy! At least Hayes didn’t write that one, although he did chose to perform it. This album is best when Hayes is actually singing. His voice is silky smooth. I like Walk On By and Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymystic much better than the last two tracks although the second half of By the Time I Get to Phoenix, when you know…he sings, is good too.

Noioso devo dire.

Hasn’t aged well- not huge fan of his vocals - I think the arrangements are all over the place

This could be much better with a bit less self indulgence.

Smooth soul and baby making music. Not my bag though.

Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic, wondering if that means glorious musical masturbation for the soul?

I'm sure we've had this before. Anyway I was expecting to like it more than I did...

Ich bin kein Fan seiner Version von Walk on by

Four songs! If I had made a hundred bets going into this as to how long the first song is, not a one of them would have been correct. 12 minutes! Who saw that coming?! And speaking of coming, that’s pretty much the whole point of this record, amirite? I’m guessing the songs are this long so as not to interrupt the flow of all the sweet baby making Hayes expected to happen whenever anyone put this on the victrola. I didn’t listen to it on a victrola or with a lady, but I am happy to announce that my laptop is pregnant! Also, I was kinda bored.

Wow. Isaac Hayes managed to write and record the most boring soul/ R&B album of all time

Why was it so long?

A lot of soul, but it didn't do much for me.

I was excited to listen to this album but there’s only one song on it I liked the rest was just weird

18 minutes Isaac? Somebody lied to you. That's a bad idea. These "poems" are too long.

Sorry Isaac, I didn't get this one. "Hyperbolicsyllablecsesquedalymistic" had at least a bit of life to it and was probably a challenging read, but generally I found this album to be really challenging...and not in a good way. "By The Time I Get to Phoenix" was particularly unrewarding. Ah well, I still loved you on South Park, Isaac!

Started off really well but by end I was glad it was over

Very long songs, but very hot and buttery. Not something I would choose to listen to, but surprisingly enjoyable... Until the last song, which was a huge drag.

not bad but not for me

Hey! That first track was the basis for 6 Inch by Beyonce :) The first track was also my favorite...it even got my hopes up a little with the melodicness (is that a word?). But then the rest of the album was just boring...with a few EH's thrown in. This feels like an album that influenced a lot of my favorite musicians....but I like them better. Good title tho

Some of it was ok at best. Definitely not my style of music but is a great representation of soul music at the time of it's release. Overall I feel like there was more talking over a background beat than actual music, although I won't deny the music did have weight behind it's 'soul'.

I like. Isaac Hayes voice as should most people but this album didn't interest me much

Too slow for me

This thankfully short album did not inspire me. For a flash in the second track there was a moment when he sounded lile a funky nick cave, then it quickly disqppeared. And i thought. Nope.

Too jammy for me but solid beats

Boring as heck.

For the first two songs, i was totally on board (awesome groove on supercalifragalistik... or whatever that was called). But then Isaac started talking too much. And i'm not really into his "man as a victim" garbage. I don't think i need to say much about song #4.

This has not aged as well as expected. It doesn’t thrill so much as meander. Bummer of a listen.

Very meh

Not to bad.

Mostly elevator music...

Didn’t even listen to it whoops

Some good tracks on here, feeling it a bit more than I did the last soul/funk album I listened to. Isaac Hayes also has a great voice. That said, this isn't something I'm going to be coming back to with any regularity.

Daft bald bastard

First 3 good. Last track beyond boring 2 stars

Yeah. This was not for me.

What an album cover LOL! I'd leave this album at the music sampler at Barnes & Noble. I remember getting lice from those shared headphones, I guess I wouldn't have gotten lice if I would have followed Isaac Hayes example. 2/10 I've heard much worse but this music is just not enjoyable.

Not my cup of tea

I wish I didn't listen to this boring ass music. 1/5

Absolutely fucking horrendous, cringe worthy, and vomit inducing.

too long somehow. too much speaking

It wad good. I didn't expect such long tracks.

Aivan hirveää kuraa. Loputtoman pituisia jamitteluja, siinä kaikki, mitä levystö jää mieleen. Parin ekan minuutin toivoo, että loppuisi jo. Tähän mennessä listan raskain kuuntelukokemus mutta sinnittelin loppuun. Yksiselitteisesti huono levy ja tarpeettoman pitkiä ja tylsiä biisejä. En tiedä kuka tästä pitää. 1/5

Big Uffz.

Well we’ve got the studio time, might as well use it…

Suht puuduttavaa menoa taas. Sopisi taustamusiikiksi jos pitää Sahara ylittää jalan.

this was completely unnecessary and a waste of time

Good voice, but incredibly boring music.

I couldn't listen to the whole thing. Feels very self indulgent and not easy listening.

Butterball

Who actually enjoys this? What made people actually record this? When are you supposed to play this? Where can I ask for my time back? Why dear lord why?

I could not stand this album. It just did not click at all, seemed to be just too experimental and way too slow for my taste.

It was ok. Songs were super long. Don’t really understand how this made the list

4 songs an album does not make

Overlapping instruments on different beats really do not vibe well for me

Repeating the same noise ad nauseam isn't music

Nothing much here.

#3 Somehow all the songs sound the same? Prominent strings. Meandering.

Unexpectedly not very sensual. Needs to be a LOT smoother and sexier to warrant the sloooooowwww buildup of these songs.

Half of the album is a twenty-minute spoken-word "song".

not my kind of music

Mir zu langatmig, ansonsten ganz okay

Not my bread and butter

I made it through 2 non-shaft songs. Not sure that I will bother with the other two. The lyrics are running out around the 3-1/2 to 4 minute mark and then it’s 7minutes of what I’m pretty sure is 70s porn music.

Nope. I don't get Soul. Doesn't resonate in any way with me.

I can’t. Lacks way too much substance to stand as a legitimate LP. Might have been a 3-star listen if it was 15 minutes, but it’s just so meandering and watered down and directionless.

I appreciate that this was groundbreaking, but won’t be listening again.

idk not for me

Was a 2 till the last song… made it a 1.5

Did not care for this one at all.

Boring & self indulgent.

👎🏻

Not my cup of tea

Slow, not exactly my style. Wouldn't listen again.

I do not understand why this is on here

Genuinely could not finish. It's not that it's bad, it's just so outside the realm of what I enjoy. Why'd he make us all look at his bald head so close up? 1

That last song made me angry. Just....why? I have no idea how this album is so highly rated. It has everything I dislike in an album.....too long, every lyric about sex, pointless masturbatory instrumental wankage. I'm completely out on this. Sorry, not sorry.

Really long and boring songs that sound like something between rap and jazz. I didn't like it at all

Slow and mellow next

That got increasingly worse the further I got into it. Had to give up a couple of minutes into track 4. What’s was that about?

I give it 0 out 5 because i dont like it dosent vibe with me. Dont recommend it.

Yeah, that's a no for me, dawg. I never realized, before listening to this album, that something could be simultaneously excessive and not enough. This album is SO MUCH. Long tracks, extended vocal and instrumental stretches, a whole, spoken-word story for some reason. And yet, it leaves me wanting and feeling like I'm missing something. There's a lack of substance that I just don't get. The only reason this was saved from a one-star review is that the musicianship is incredible even if it's not being leveraged to its full potential.

It's a no from me. I feel like I'm missing something, clearly I'm just not getting it. There's a lack of anything interesting. The musicianship is obviously good, but that's all I can say that I enjoyed. 45 minutes of nothing. Saying an awful lot but not really saying anything at all. It just didn't grab me, it was very dull and too repetitive. I don't mind at all when tracks are long, but at least make them interesting or go somewhere. Any song that length needs to feel epic. The last song was 18 minutes long. Fine, not a problem. The first half is Isaac Hayes just talking. Literally just talking over an occasional cymbal. It's not cool. It doesn't make you cool to like this. In fact, I think it's quite pretentious. I will honestly never listen to this album again and I'm absolutely fine with that.

Nicht interessant für mich.

Hated it. Slow and boring. Why are all the songs so long???

Utter rubbish

Not my genre.

Not for me. 1/5

Not my bag

Did anyone else get bored listening to this album?

I struggle to understand how on earth this is on this list. This does to music what B*Witched did towards the Good Friday Peace Agreement! 0.8

So boring!

Ridiculous track lengths

1. uualk on - 1.5 2. hyper - 1 3. one uuoman - 0 4. phoeniz - 0 5. uualk on by - 1.5 6. phoeniz - 0

I'm not a fan of 15 minute long songs. Had to turn it off on second listen through as I just got. So annoyed with it 😅

Very skippable. Isaac Hayes sings for about 8 minutes on a 45 minute soul album. I'm happy to stick to his brief tunes as Chef from South Park. 1.10 stars

I am sorry to anyone that loves this kind of music, and/or this album, but I gotta be honest, that's 45 minutes of my life I wish I could have back. There's just zero resonance in my soul/heart for this kind of music. One element I'll give a point for is the use of a Hammond Organ. Sorrrrry.

Just a whole lot of gibberish and not a lot of music.

That’s a bit much. 18:38 of By the Time I get to Phoenix.

A tomar por culo. Ya estoy harto de álbumes mierdosos. Me doy de baja de la lista.

New album for me. Did not hit any of my music job buttons.

Not really up my alley, genre-taste-wise.

Smooth, easy listening, some sexy times music. Didn't love it, 1*. Not about that 18 minute song. 3-5*: albums I actually enjoyed to varying degree.

This just isn't my thing. It doesn't help that there's a 2+ minute monologue on the last track. There are much more developed albums in these genres.

Boring

Favourite Song: Walk On By

Not my favorite, it doesn’t really connect.

Orchestral Sex music. Track 4 has a 9 minute spoken word introduction. Half a point for the cover and the first track, which was also a cover. Hard avoid. 1.0

....mai sentito. Il suo nome non mi dice nulla.

Isaac Hayes. Shaft. Chef from South Park. Chocolate Salty Balls. All of these things occurred before I actually listened to an Isaac Hayes album, which is this one. There's little doubt about his distinctive voice, but soul and r&b are again two genres of music that don't really float my boat. And then you have the fact that there are only four songs on this album, stretched out to the edge of the universe. A 12 minute cover of the pop song "Walk on By" which is... interesting, at least for the first five minutes. And my word, "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" goes for over 18 minutes, and I can tell you the Glen Campbell version certainly does not do that. Is there an actual reason this is the way it is? If you are looking for freeform extended mix get-up-on-stage-and-just-keep-playing-until-you-drop kind of stuff... then I guess this could be for you. This is absolutely nothing like what I was expecting to hear when I put this on. I'm sure there is a reason I "MUST" hear this before I die. I don't know what that reason is though. Boring as batshite.

My husband felt it was cruel to give this 1-star on the basis that it is tedious rather than painful to listen to. But this should be 1001 albums you should listen to before you die, not 1001 albums it is worth tolerating. A strange mix of soul, ruined by a sprinkling of big band. It takes a great song as its first track and makes it terrible. How is that even possible?

A 4 song album, mostly self indulgent. A hot buttered voice but more needed.

Pff erg vervelend.

I gave up on the album at the 4+ minute spoken intro to the 18 minute song. Good for smooshing music but too slow for me

Utterly forgettable

Hated it, twangy intrusive guitar, liked the tone of his voice. Just glad it was short!

One Woman is a fantastic song. The album was okay but not very interesting

Way too long.

It was just different versions of the same few songs, got tired of it quick.

Not my style. 4 LONG tracks.

Nah. Too souly.

Super over rated

Not my kind of music. Sounds like what is in the title.

mhaaah, beetje druk

Very smooth late-night grooves...not sure about the six-minute spoken intro to the last track though.

Loved it.
