Hot Buttered Soul

I'm normally not a fan of cover versions but when you breathe new life into them like Isaac Hayes does it's a different story. He showed good taste in the songs he selected. Walk on By and By the Time are nicely crafted tunes. The guitar and backing vocals in Walk On are rare groove staples and I even enjoyed the lengthy intro (about 9 Scum songs long) in By the Time. The late piano solo in Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic sounds like it could have influenced a lot of early house music 20 years later. One Woman isn’t as strong but those lyrics!

Methinks the 1,001 algorithms are have a bit of fun by giving me Napalm Death and Isaac Hayes back to back. But hey, variety is the spice of life and Hayes' Hot buttered soul album is one of my all-time favourite soul albums. Side A truly deserves the over-used and cliche'd adjective Epic. His cover of Burt Bacharach's Walk on by is a magnificent psychadelic trip and those string and vocal arrangements! As an aside, the Stranglers' cover of this same song is very different and equally good IMO as they give Bacharach's light pop song some real edge. Side B flails a bit, and gets a bit self-indulgent, so this baby gets a minor deduction and just misses perfection.

Strange scientologist releases the perfectly titled album. This is smooth and hot. Long strung out soul jams that make you want to bathe in coco butter. Just forget about the aliens. Best Tracks: Walk On By; Hyperbolicsyllablecsesquedalymistic

This could be much better with a bit less self indulgence.

Sexy and sweet. One of the songs gets a little out-there, both in length and its narrative of evil women. Overall positive experience.

Chef from South Park, not too bad

Isaac Hayes has a smoky, yet articulate style. Harkening back to the lounge music era, this album puts the listener in the shoes of an audience member. A delightful experience, one is inspired to grab a cigar + whiskey in between a slow dance.

This was fine. Certain tracks just dragged for me, but overall it was an okay listen and I think I'll have to accept that soul is still a rough genre for me to really get into. Ah. Some day.

First thought: hey, I recognize this. Portishead sampled it. Second thought: wow, just four track in 45 minutes? Third thought (related to the second one): oh, man is this song still going? There's not an awful lot happening is there? Final thought(s): really liked the first song, the rest didn't really register much. 6/10

This record is pretty wild. I don't know if I love the whole thing, but I would absolutely put this on in the background any time.

Four songs! If I had made a hundred bets going into this as to how long the first song is, not a one of them would have been correct. 12 minutes! Who saw that coming?! And speaking of coming, that’s pretty much the whole point of this record, amirite? I’m guessing the songs are this long so as not to interrupt the flow of all the sweet baby making Hayes expected to happen whenever anyone put this on the victrola. I didn’t listen to it on a victrola or with a lady, but I am happy to announce that my laptop is pregnant! Also, I was kinda bored.

It's like a massage for your inner ear

I think Isaac Hayes might be a genius. The meat of this was great, but the build up to get there was quite slow (4 tracks, 45 mins). With familiarity from repeated listens, I expect the appreciation and enjoyment of this would grow, but based on one listen it's a 3/5.

Never has an album been more appropriately titled. Maximalist to the point where the spoken word intro to By The Time I get To Phoenix lasts 8 minutes! Highly flavourful and dripping with soul.

This is what soul should sound like

Had heard a few tracks off this album in the past, but this was my first concentrated listen-through. This thing soars high in so many spots. The passion and intensity comes through, and the music is so strong. Although I do get they wanted a real orchestral sound to the album, just as personal preference I don't always want so much from the strings and horns. Isaac Hayes' talent comes through no matter what.

One Woman is a fantastic song. The album was okay but not very interesting

This one is just good ol soul. It has a few touches that are different than what the genre dictates (making it progressive soul I guess), but overall it's just good soul music. It does have a bit where it's a spoken word poem over a beat which didn't fit the album feel, but other than that it was great. Favorite track: Walk On By

It was pretty vibey. The artist's voice is pretty nice and soulful, but I don't see myself coming back to this record. Music is pretty good, just not for me. Highlights: 1, 2, and 4.

Not the best album I've listened to, I felt it dragged on a bit. However I did enjoy the song Hyperbolicsyllablecsesquedalymistic a lot, so for that I give this album a 3/5 stars.

Strong 8 to a 9, such a nice album.

First half starts off strong but that 18 minute track in the middle of the album loses the groove that had been established. "Hyperbollicsyllablesesquedalymistic" is a great title and a great track. That song is my hands down favorite of this album.

An interesting, very full-bodied interpretation of big band soul. I first thought this was a pretty modern, retro-styled album. It must have been way ahead of its time when it came out. Good album. But not one I'll actively listen to again.

SEX! also chef was a good character

I've heard a couple of songs from Isaac Hayes, but all of this album was new to me. I'm tempted to listen to "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic" again, because I'm sure I missed something in there. Hayes did say 'medulla oblongata' at some point in that song. The music was interesting too. "One Woman" wasn't quite my style, and the LONG spoken intro to "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" (9 of the 18 minutes) keeps this album in the "it's okay" category.

I prefer when his songs are also a recipe but this is pretty good. Love "By the time I get to phoenix". Why don't all songs have a 9-minute intro?

Literally one of the best albums of all time. I'm not kidding. If you haven't listened to it before I beg of you to do so. Three out of the four songs are kinda lengthy but I guarantee that the payoff is worth it.

Sorry Isaac, I didn't get this one. "Hyperbolicsyllablecsesquedalymistic" had at least a bit of life to it and was probably a challenging read, but generally I found this album to be really challenging...and not in a good way. "By The Time I Get to Phoenix" was particularly unrewarding. Ah well, I still loved you on South Park, Isaac!

Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic vinner pris för bästa låttitel. För tankarna till Outkast, säkert inspirerade? Inledningslåten Walk on By är nog ändå den vassaste. En 12 minuter lång låt som fångar lyssnaren direkt med de otroligt vackra stråkarna i det instrumentala introt, och sedan aldrig släpper taget. Den uppmärksamme lyssnaren hör även ett beat i introt som finns samplat i The Notorious B.I.G.'s Warning. 3.5/5!!! Bästa låt: Walk on By

Smooth. Good, confident storytelling on the longer tracks. Iconic voice. Slow orchestral builds are incredibly effective and beautiful on the longer songs. The song "One Woman" hit the happy balance between the gradual crescendos + shorter length. By The Time I Get to Phoenix has an AMAZING climax, but the spoken words parts take over 10 minutes. Hyperbolicsyllabic(...) is nice and groovy, but a bit repetitive. Walk On By

Hey! That first track was the basis for 6 Inch by Beyonce :) The first track was also my favorite...it even got my hopes up a little with the melodicness (is that a word?). But then the rest of the album was just boring...with a few EH's thrown in. This feels like an album that influenced a lot of my favorite musicians....but I like them better. Good title tho

So far i'm enjoying this album overall. the things that are throwing me off is how long the songs are, i know it was normal for the time but i'm definitely not used to the length of the track. the instrumentation is great, once i learn to dj/sample and whatnot i definitely see myself using sounds from this album. his voice is exactly the voice i like to listen to when it come to older music. I wouldn't say he's a baritone, but he has that nice deep sultry voice that i love 4 songs, 45mins? wow that's crazy! i'd definitely give it another listen. though i'd have to be reminded the album exist, i'd have a hard time remember for myself

i refreshed by accident and it ate my notes!!! :brofrustration:. anyway its good. groovy, soulful, hypnotic, great vocals and great rhythm section- love the soloing throughout - the guitar is tastefully thin for a sound thats getting panned all over the place. the best part is 9 minutes into by the time i got the pheonix when it goes from podcast w/ cymbols into an actual song. so good. simply good vibes i gave 8/10 (where do i put ratings?)

Some of it was ok at best. Definitely not my style of music but is a great representation of soul music at the time of it's release. Overall I feel like there was more talking over a background beat than actual music, although I won't deny the music did have weight behind it's 'soul'.

HBS, an important soul music album, perfectly matches my own preference for music. It's an album I would gladly play at home, however, I think I would tire of it too quickly. 4/5

Isaac Hayes é um personagem peculiar tendo em conta a sua carreira como Chef do South Park, ouvir este álbum só me fez pensar que estava a ouvir o Chef a cantar. O chef cantava também sobre temas parecidos, mas de forma mais explicita. Eu não dava nada por este álbum, nem sabia para o que ia, no entanto, este álbum deu-me tudo, é genial. O álbum não é longo, mas as músicas são e ainda bem que são, começando com a maravilhosa e melhor música do álbum o Walk on By, tudo é bom, desde o seu arranjo a calmaria acompanhada pela voz do Chef. Agora seguimos para a Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic onde temos um coro femenino a pronunciar o título da música o que para além de engraçado é louvável. O One Woman acalma e torna-se mais intimista, o que é agradável terminando com um cover de uma música de 3 minutos que o Isaac pensou que era pouco e fez com que a mesma tivesse 18 minutos, contando uma história acrescentando um contexto interessante. Não tenho nada a dizer para além que isto é um álbum a sério. Nota: 9/10 Dia: 21/08/2026

Never listened to a whole album by Isaac Hayes. I like his voice, and the whole funk-soul aesthetic. The album only has four tracks, so they need to all be stonkers. The slow-burning, emotive-but-groovy feel works well across the first two long tracks. Unfortunately, the longest track, "By The Time I Get To Phoenix", isn't doing that much for me, with its rambling spoken word and extremely minimal/gradual pay-off. Overall, a 3 for this - I enjoyed it, but I'm somewhat ambivalent.

Each of the extended songs take a while to get going, almost like Hayes is engaging in musical foreplay, but when the beat hits and the horns start a'blowing... swoooon.

Decent. A bit short. First 3 songs were good. Didn't like the 4th as it was spoken. First song is a mammoth 12 minutes, but very chilled. Would listen to again (minus the last song...)

Hello children!! I loved this. What an artist, to take other people's work and reinvent them in such extraordinary ways, stamping his character all over them while being faithful to the feeling and respectful to the original. Then the other tracks are full of play, lyrically and musically. "Now I want your imagination. I want you to travel with me" - I'm there every time.

Just OK for me. Didn’t really draw me in.

Before listening to this I only really knew Isaac Hayes thanks to his chocolate salty balls, the theme from Shaft and his dalliance with Scientology. I really enjoyed his version of ‘Walk on By’ and thought I was going to love the album, but the next three tracks were a bit less interesting. Didn’t love it, but it might have piqued my interest enough to go and check out some of his other stuff. Would probably have given it a 2.5 stars if I could.

Opening this up to listen and seeing four tracks was really exciting. If I'm remembering right, Isaac did the Shaft soundtrack and that same vibe is in this album, maybe just a little slower. There was a magic to these songs that makes them timeless both in length and memory. Consider my soul all buttered up.

Much to my neighbours joy and elation I sang along to this. I even did the brass sections and the sexy guitar flangin' bits. This album makes me feel like a straight up hottie. I don't want to give it my top score, because I'm saving that for when The Used 'In Love and Death' appears on this list.

Very smooth soul, almost didn't realize it ended because it transitions so well with other music. Really good relaxing music.

slow, jazzy, and full of soul. I learned he is the voice of Chef on South Park and is a scientologist. he died in his sixties after a stroke. but these were the songs of a younger man, full of life and passion.

This thankfully short album did not inspire me. For a flash in the second track there was a moment when he sounded lile a funky nick cave, then it quickly disqppeared. And i thought. Nope.

I can’t exactly explain why but I really enjoyed this album. The songs came to life and the emotion in it is genuine, and the musicianship found in the band were all great for me.

Wow, only four tracks for 45 minutes, I like that. I know Isaac Hayes for the Shaft soundtrack, but this is really solid too. Nice, long grooves to settle into. Kind of crazy that this was released in 1969, I normally associate this kind of soul music with the '70s. Nothing amazing, but a good album nonetheless. Favorite tracks: Walk On By, Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic (just had to type that out). Album art: I've seen this one countless times. Gotta be an iconic cover for the bald community. Though seeing hair follicles at this resolution might set off some trypophobia for some people. 3.5/5

For the first two songs, i was totally on board (awesome groove on supercalifragalistik... or whatever that was called). But then Isaac started talking too much. And i'm not really into his "man as a victim" garbage. I don't think i need to say much about song #4.

Very meh

Soul but experimental.

This morning I started listening to Hot Buttered Soul by Isaac Hayes on my way into work. It's my first time with this album as I haven't listened to a lot of soul over my life. I remember a time when I couldn't stand the longer versions of popular songs. For example, growing up and listening to CCR - I would have to skip I Heard It Through the Grapevine because it was 11 minutes long. That felt like forever. I want a song full of hooks, easily accessible, and I want it fucking short like a normal song! Or the long version of Light my Fire by the Doors, that was also painful to sit through for me in years past. But age has mellowed me I guess. This album with it's four songs, it's long instrumental sections, and the honesty of the singing - wow. It feels expansive and epic, and also very intimate and personal at the same time. Taking it slow has never felt so right. This was a lovely thing to hear this morning.

First Isaac Hayes album I've ever listened to, and I absolutely dig the production. Walk on By is a whole vibe. Fantastic album to listen to while reading about Trump's impeachment fall out.

Every song has five minutes of psychedelic guitar and Issac Hayes talkdown before it actually starts and then another five minutes of jamming at the end. Five stars.

Not my favorites but still an great album

Some good tracks on here, feeling it a bit more than I did the last soul/funk album I listened to. Isaac Hayes also has a great voice. That said, this isn't something I'm going to be coming back to with any regularity.

Now we are talking. The bass lines on this album or so funky. Of course, so is Isaac himself.

Didn't have a chance to finish this album, although I liked the parts I heard. Am giving 3 stars for now, but reserve the right to bump that up or down on a more thorough listening.

Interesting album that has a bit of an edge to it, definitely better R&B than Maxwell the day before but still not enough to get 4 stars for me

Wow, what an incredible album, listened straight through twice. Had to take a second in between to appreciate that this was made in 1969! Cool, sexy, and incredibly well produced. Plus, any musician that borrows this many terms from neuroanatomy gets an extra point from me. Rest in peace, Chef.

I appreciate what’s going on here, but it was too long and windy and jammy feeling for my tastes today

Yeah, that's a no for me, dawg. I never realized, before listening to this album, that something could be simultaneously excessive and not enough. This album is SO MUCH. Long tracks, extended vocal and instrumental stretches, a whole, spoken-word story for some reason. And yet, it leaves me wanting and feeling like I'm missing something. There's a lack of substance that I just don't get. The only reason this was saved from a one-star review is that the musicianship is incredible even if it's not being leveraged to its full potential.

Huge respect for Hayes. However, one of the problems with releasing a four-track album is that when one of them starts with a 9 minute monologue, it sort of brings the whole thing down. Best track: Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic.

Although I think that the intros to "Walk On By" and "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" set the tone quite nicely, they drag on a little too much in my opinion. Other than that, it's a fantastic soul record that'll most likely grow on me more as time goes by.

Absolutely flies by (after all, only four tracks!). It somehow feels both slight and like an absolute monster. I'll take my soul in this-sized chunks, thanks very much.
