Reviews (page 11 of 13)

Interesting... The first song was enjoyable and intriguing. It still isn't a go-to genre nor did I enjoy the majority of the album.

Psychedelic soul The highs were really high, some great bits. Pretty strings and flutes with soulful emotional singing. Cool jam bits too. But most of the songs did overstay their welcome for me. I do love many songs with long instrumental sections, but those first 2 tracks just went on a bit too long for comfort for me; they were very jammy but not as interesting over a long period of time as I might prefer. And on that last track there was 9 minutes of talking before the song picked up. The short track was very pretty and soulful, definitely one to remember

Liked it. I missed some soul in my life.

pleasant listen to genre I dont usually listen to

A soul album with brilliant production, and/but mega-experimental songs. Long, drawn-out, instrumental heavy. Unlike any soul album I’ve heard.

Wanted so badly to give it a 4. Love the music, don’t need the 8 min spoken word intro before Phoenix. Glen Campbell’s version is a perfect rendition and this is good too. Walk on By was a good cover and I liked the rest. This is good music to have on in a chill, background music type of way.

Definitely miss the BIG sound of the 70’s

I wasn't overawed by this album. Not the genre I tend to listen a lot to but nonetheless, I enjoyed it

This is a real weird album, real hit and miss. The tracks are way too long and over-indulgent, and they start to get repetitive and grate after a while, especially when so much is instrumental. The 18 minute track is 9 minutes of completely uninteresting talking, 9 minutes of great track that slowly builds into something with real energy. One Woman was reeeeal nice - why couldn't they all be 5 minute tracks? I love all the instrumentation on here: keys, sweeping violins, wind instruments, chimes, backing chorus - and of course the big man's incredible voice. It's very dramatic and big and I love it. On that note, I should say I'm reviewing this album without the single edits (so the original album). The single of Walk On By works SO much better. If they'd have trimmed the rest it would have improved this immensely.

Tame groovy soul. Random storytelling in the middle. Just not really my thing.

Would be 4 stars if not for the long spoken-word stuff on the last track

I enjoyed it! Something I would not normally go for, but glad I discovered it! CHILDREN! lol

The spoken word part lowers the grade.

Really good soul/funk, especially considering that it was made in 1969. 3/5

Agradable.

Smooth tunes, not my favourite genre but very listenable

Insanely smooth.

Classic soul album. Some nice tunes but for some reason I could not get into it. I’ll need to try again another day

This album lasts 45 mins and only contains 4 songs, two of which are really long cover versions. But at the same time, it's kind of great. The voice is good but the instrumentation is great, particularly the bass and the guitar. I'm gonna say High 3, but I was close to a 4 3/5

Decent quality, though not particularly compelling on a personal level.

Decent listen. I'm not a fan of Walk on By so an extra long version of it wasn't ideal. Straight listen to Dungarvan. One Woman is my favorite song.

Progressive soul as a genre was new to me, but it really caught my interest

Nice, very Mellow

I would describe this as a work in progress. The elements that would come together with Shaft and subsequent albums are evident here and there, especially on Hyperetc. You can also see how Isaac influenced other genres e.g., his cover of Walk on By has echoes of trip hop and ambience. But it can be overlong and a bit aimless at times

Strange! Nothing wrong with the actual music, Isaac does a good job of the covers but only 4 tracks? and 10 mins of pointless waffle before "By the time..." Why would anyone want to listen to that?

It’s alright, nice production choices and voice, but I don’t see myself coming back to it.

By the time I get through this 18 minute long song I can expect to listen to the single version of it 5 minutes later. Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of this album but it sure is heavy on a trip to Phoenix.

very soulful but large sections (especially the end) just kinda meander for a while

Wanted to like this more but its always a risk with these big tracks, I think you have to listen a few more times to really love it.

Fantastic start, I liked it but the rambling monologue didn’t add much, I was driving so maybe couldn’t give it my full attention, I plan on re-listening when I’m sat to give it my full attention

Eka biisi raastava..Jahas irstaus aiheuttana... vika biisi incredible sounds emotion.. MAHTIPONTINEN MEGALOMANIAC..

Watching my son trying to read the title of the music song was well enjoyable. Not as Isaac Hayes as I thought it would be.

Long songs, golden pipes, organ, strings. Bring on the soul. This is good casual listening, but not a regular rotation. If I owned a record store this is what I would work in.

Excellent pun, massive respect but not really a soul fan so the title immediately put me off. In actual fact it was way funkier than expected, maybe I just don't like more modern soul? Isaac has a fantastic voice and I really enjoyed the first couple of songs but it lost its way a bit towards the end. A real shame he is (or at least was) a mad scientologist and got himself kicked off south park.

Big funky lonnnng songs

A high 3

Soulful (shockingly enough). Something to vibe to and feel. Great strings. Sometimes overlong and self-indulgent, but consistently passionate and self-assured. Best song: Walk On By

Не моё прям, скучновато. Голос грубоватый

3/5 Best: Walk On By Worst: One Woman

An album title that perfectly describes the album.

Not bad at all, I got hooked for most of the time, but it would definitely drone on at times.

pretty cool album. Walk On By is so epic, it's that sound that's escaped out from its 2-minute, tight pop constraints in to this loud experience, this really high octane jam. By The Time I get to Phoenix doesn't grab me in the same way, maybe because the burn is so slow, but I like what he's doing here. As an album, it's a little confusing, but I get why this was mega influential. 3/5

I have never been familiar with Isaac Hayes outside of Shaft and South Park, and didn't have any real expectations at all for this. Initially I was pretty lukewarm to it, but the album builds and gets stronger and stronger, the last track was a surprisingly great 18 minute journey. Very cool stuff.

Hyvää on, vaikkei tämä 60-luvun souli vielä lähde samalla tavalla kuin pari vuotta myöhemmin.

This starts out pretty good but peters out. I somewhat enjoyed it, though.

I like Isaac Hayes but let's be real, this should have been a single.

Average

Started strong then got long and winding

Smooth

Short mini album, with some lovely Bacharach and David songs

23rd May 2023 Listened a day later on the drive to London. Worked from home yesterday recovering from Ireland A soulful opera which was very uplifting in parts

very comfortable but requires a certain mood

Actually really enjoyed it. Phoenix was a good song but had a little bit too much spoken word for me to put this album on any kind of rotation, side A could be. Well produced and great sound. music/instruments were relatively simple but they were used well and if makes you wonder what blues greats (or any old greats) could do with modern equipment

Lovely voice, lovely sound, but there is something about 15 minute long songs that don't surprise at any point that is ultimately a bit aimless.

interesting

The opening track, "Walk on By": Great beat and rhythm start it out, then Isaac's dreamy, soulful, voice appears. I think this will be a party-type, background record to listen to in the future. Decent stuff.

Some nice soul songs on this one, not sure I jive with 12+ min long songs.

This wasn’t bad! Listened to it a couple of times over the weekend. Some of it is pretty epic, like a sweeping score to Shaft. Some other parts, he rambles for a long long time. Musically it’s pretty awesome though. Serves as good background or driving music!! Chocolate salty balls!

Chef can sing.

Wow, a four tracker. This album is great for using butter as shaving cream. I enjoyed it less than I thought actually. Im not sure what I was expecting, but I could have easily just walked on by this one. It was cool to hear some soul and blues rhythms mixed with a 60s rock vibe on some songs. The one with the long ass name. But I mostly loved the very dramatic, inspirational song about philandering though. Good for him. Not so great for his wife. The instruments and the Isaac’s voice were fine, but I just I just wanted Chef from South Park.

Always a fan of some good soul music. With this album only having 4 songs and 3 of them extended, I can’t really peg a particular favorite/liked song. Overall liked the groove. Some of the songs went on too long though.

I went back and forth on this one as I thought it was a bit meandering at times and it wasn't solely original content. Still, when the cool, funk of Hayes' vocals and own compositions was allowed to feature, it was ok.

Great voice, obviously, and I like the chill vibe. I'm fine with the length of the songs since really the album is more about generating a mood. That said the lengthy spoken word story feels out of place and I think limits the re-listenability of the album, not to mention making it distracting of you have it on in the background trying to set the mood for, you know, whatever. Otherwise very solid album, I enjoyed it. 3.5

Enjoyed

I didn’t think I’d like this. But I kinda did. Arrangements strong

Spectacular opening with Walking on By. The rest of the album, while not bad at all, didn't quite live to the expectations set by the first track.

Creative but not repetitive.

Soul rítmico para una buena voz. Canciones tranquilas y con un toque de sensualidad

pretty enjoyable

It’s not okay to have 19 minute songs. It’s just not. Get an editor. That being said, the production/playing on this is GORGEOUS; I am bowled over by what a talent Hayes is compared to the super unfortunate public association for him South Park generated. Glad I listened.

Some very long tracks on this album. Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic was the most interesting track, very funky, with lots of large neuroscience words. Walk on by was also a good song, an interesting take on a classic song. Overall it was funky soul. Nothing like the Shaft theme song that I was expecting to hear

With only 4 tracks, it's easily digestible, especially with its clean production and lush orchestral instrumentation. There are low points, like how it took 8 minutes for "By the time I get to Phoenix" to start. "Walk on By" was a fantastic cover, and the rest had their moments, but overall underwhelming. Stick to the kitchen.

For the most part the songs are good, just too long.

3/5. What a wild album, 10+ minute long songs mostly and amazing crooning from Hayes. However, that last song is not listenable. 18+ minutes with most of it just talking. First three are fantastic though.

I really enjoyed Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic and its long length worked for it (Although a little long). Album as a whole isn't fantastic, tracks are too long. I really like some sections of some of the songs. You could edit this down to nice 35min album.

A bit cheesy, but honest

Some nice stuff on here but some super indulgence too

The last album I reviewed contained 14 songs in 15 minutes of running time, HBS has only 4 songs with two lengthy songs over 12 minutes each. On the 18:42, By The Time I Get to Phoenix, Hayes spends a good part of the first half of the song talking and by the time he gets to the music the song is halfway done. As a general preference, I'm not a huge fan of epic length songs, but the opening track (12:03), the Bacharach/David, Walk On By, is a great song and it doesn't seem too long. It's a nice groove to open with and overall it's nice listen. Previously, I had only heard Hayes because of the Theme From Shaft and this is a solid record from the Soul legend.

Somehow doesn't scratch the soul itch that other artists do for me, just comes up a small bit short on that front - but the blend of soul and funk is great, and Get to Phoenix is incredible

Smooth as hell, can’t think of a more suitable album name! I enjoyed the first half but felt the latter dragged somewhat with some quite drawn out songs

Incredibly smooth voice. Songs too long though

Pleasing old school soul, fuzzy guitars, strings, and wah make this album super fun to listen to. Hypnotic, very cool old school use of stereo makes the band sound like it is swirling around you as you are listening.

Apart from the story telling some fine soul music.

love his cover of the white stripes. chefs got some voice on him.

Go on, Chef. Lamb chops for breakfast

I never listen to this one before. First side is good and then By the time I get To Phoenix, I like the riffing in the beginning but it's bit long and get's really redundant. There's an art to doing it, his label mate at the time Albert King was a master at it. 2.5 stars for me.

Beautiful soul album, definitely sounds like it's of the era it was made. You can hear influences of it everywhere, Portishead, etc. 4.5/5

Funky soul that has some long cuts and I recognize at least one song that has been heavily sampled

Great album and then you get to "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and the album falls apart for me. The album is well produced and sounds great, but when half the album is taken up by a spoken word interlude mixed with an OK song I have to subtract points here and end with 3 stars. I wouldn't spend the money to have it in my collection.

Epic symphonic funk soul that lays the template for the great funk of the 1970s. Slow burning, but Walk On By is magnificent.

I enjoyed this more than I expected. This dude is smooth. I believe in love now that I’ve heard this album. I can’t believe this is 1969 though.

Classic soul. Music for chill.

Liked this way more than I expected - listened to it 3x through.

It's not a bad album, just not my taste 3/5

Listened Before? N Soul! Soul with an interesting format: 4 songs, all over 5 minutes, averaging about 9 minutes. Plus two single edits of two of the songs. I enjoyed it well enough, but it seemed a little short? Maybe a little lacking in the content department. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Walk On By (Single Edit)

A bit on the lenghty side and not quite in a good way but still some wonderful soul sounds with a beautiful deep voice.

Du soul qui s'écoute bien sans plus

soullll

He has a beautiful voice. However, others have done these songs better imo.

3.5/5. Who would’ve thought that Chef from South Park was so musically gifted.

The voice is perfect. Hot. Buttered. Soul. The album was too topical-“sock it to me”? 60’s lingo not classic.

Man, I LOVE this one. What a vibe. The orchestral crescendo into that dirty little guitar riff in Walk on By is one of my favorite musical segments I've ever heard. I could chill to this any day. Track 2, which I can't pronounce no matter how many times I read or hear the title is another funky, solid track. By the Time I Get to Phoenix is a lot. The last half is really great, but the poetic-story intro is really long, and so it interferes with repeat play on this album. I will probably skip the first 10 minutes of that song in the future. This is almost a great all-thriller, no-filler, except for that one section of the fourth track!

Прослушано. Концептуально, необычно, кое-что зацепило. В целом достойный альбом.

A nice listen

Like a more serious version of Chef Songs from South Park. Very Long songs, love making music

Soulful, decadent, beautifully arranged. Sexy as hell. More than a little self-indulgent. That 8+ minute intro to "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" is brutal, but overall this is a pleasure. High 3, not quite a 4. Fave Songs (All songs, from most to least favorite): Walk On By, Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic, One Woman, By the Time I Get to Phoenix

dragged on a bit. I enjoyed the first song. 5/10

Nice to listen to this warm sexy soul music in October because this album sounds like Autumn embodied in music! I have some kind of phobia of dead skin, skin follicles and zoomed in skin images and particularly skin on the head (I can't type the name for that haha!) so I HATE the album art SO much, it's making me feel very nauseous. I am really torn because I have a lot of love for jazzy soul music and for Hayes' delicious voice. BUT I don't have much time for long songs, I get why some people appreciate them but I have a shorter attention span. The musical talent in this album is obscene and some of the bits and pieces are super exciting so I can see why they are a delight to sample and have been sampled loads. I think this evens out to a score of 3 for me. I really like One woman it kind of feels like a 90s chick flick, very nostalgic.

Yeah I mean I generally vibed with this, enjoy a bit of a story in a song

Smooth, soulful. Easy to get caught up in the groove. I think the earlier part of "By The Time I Get to Phoenix" is a little boring, personally, but once it kicks in it's more pleasant. Favorite track: "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic"

I guess hip-hop and sampling ruined soul for me. I would dig myself into the music and then random sequence would play and I was just fully expecting some Kanye-esque beats to drop and turn it into a proper banger. But putting that aside this was very enjoyable and surprisingly up to date. Initial part of the spoken word song went for a bit too long though.

67/100: This was a really fun listen. Having it on loop kept me in a good mood while doing my fluids homework. I also want to appreciate how great of an album name this is. “Hot Buttered Soul” is exactly what this album sounds like—just hearing or reading the name of the album emulates the feelings that arise while listening to it, that’s a beautiful thing. Also, the songs “Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic“ deserves attention just based on its name alone! This album felt like listening to a modern Marvin Gaye album, which was cool. With all of that being said, I’d rather listen to Marvin Gaye than this album. Since I rarely listen to soul or R&B, the few times I’m in the mood for it, I’ll probably be putting on a Marvin Gaye album as opposed to this.

I could tell from the first song that this was a cut above the rest, and deserves to be in the 1001 list. The first three tracks are like a breath of fresh air - real effort has been put into the music and mix of instruments. Isaac Heyes has got a singing voice that makes you want to hear more. It's not all great though because I don't like the spoken intro on track 4 "By The Time I Get To Phoenix". The talking drags on for about 9min of the 18min track. Also the rest of the song is just not good enough to justify listening to 9min of talking. And I definatly don't like interviews on an album (track 7). Would I buy it - probably not - too much talking.

Long songs but a golden voice

Good chill day, things cost so much money though

Enjoyable, more so than the other Isaac hayes album I had earlier on in the adventure

09/15/2022 This album was pretty good! I have a special place in my heart for Walk on By (thank you Phillip), and the rest of the album wasn’t bad either. Isaac Hayes doesn’t have my favorite voice, but this wasn’t a pain to get through at all. Just probably wouldn’t feel inclined to listen again. However…the last track was really amazing too. — I am never taking a night class again!!! I am so tired, and it really throws off my schedule. Studio was good today, we had a review and the class and Dawn seemed to like my work. Onto the next day…

Firstly, make no mistake about it, this album cover and title just scream “soul-funk sex god” and I’m here for it. The music itself is really a dream for sampling, and I can understand why DJs have tapped into this estimable well of funky rhythms. As an album though I’m a bit more perplexed by its sprawling tracks. I want to give Hayes credit for the way he draws out these epic crescendoes from each track, but they don’t half overstay their welcome after a while. I maybe have to listen to this record again to full appreciate its intentions, but my first impression was honestly one of indifference.

Torn on this - it was bloody catchy, but also a covers album. 3/5.

Kinda experimental, a bit weird. Not my kinda style but i can see the appeal

Fun - really goes at it on the keyboards tho.

eka biisi tosi hyvä vaikkei tuntunut loppuvan koskaan. singleversio hyvä, kitara makee mut miksi toka biisi jatkui samaan tapaan ikuisesti? puhelauluun mennessä keskittyminen herpaantuu, oisko ollut vähän tiivistämisen paikkoja kuitenkin, vaikka on vain 4 biisin albumi

Love the vibes, not the most adventurous tho but solid

Liked Walk On By and One Woman

Funnily, the song "One woman" reminds me of South Park's chef, I wonder if they used this song in the show.

An enjoyable collection of classic soul sounds. None of the songs particularly stood out for me, but the sounds are there.

It's all cool and funky but with only 4 tracks over 45 minutes it is not a pop in and out of type listen...also, Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic keeps making me think Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious...every time....

it's alright, didn't enjoy the talking interludes but nice tunes

This was ok. I honestly don’t remember anything other than that long ass song about the cheating wife. Ooof!

3.5 some awesome tracks with some that feel flat

Some long winded jams. Some good nuggets in there but didn't enjoy as a whole

My first time hearing Isaac Hayes EVER. All the tracks on here are pretty great, but I'd say that "Hot Buttered Soul" is probably my #1 fave.

Shit, first song I was like "oh Hooverphonic totally sampled this for their track 2 Wicky". Looks like this is a cover of the original song by Dionne Warwick as well though, interesting how popular this first track has been. Great vocals but some of the songs are a bit too long, still very nice though.

It was exactly like hot butter for the soul in that it was sweet but also like butter I could not tolerate it.

Really enjoyed the first part of this, the first two songs somehow fly by and don't feel like 9+ minute songs at all The spoken word intro of the last song drags on a lot though and the payoff isn't worth it imo

Eh, not my kind of soul, for the most part. Too long and unfocused, though not entirely without its charms.

Dit was best tof! De openingstrack met het later veel gesamplede gitaarriffje is geweldig! Best een baas die Isaac😎

Beetje Barry White-achtig qua stem. Mooi.

I could live without the 8-minute spoken-word intro to the last track, but otherwise I had a good time

Thankfully the version I listened to had the single edit versions of the Wall On By and By The Time I Get To Phoenix covers. This album just left me wanting to hear Isaac Hayes cover Wichita Lineman.

I enjoyed it, but I actually kind of enjoyed the songs Spotify played after the album was done a bit more. The songs on this album are good, but a little too long and meandering. Almost like prog rock meets soul. Get to the point, Isaac! 3 stars.

Isaac Hayes had 14 kids, absolute king. Also, fuck Scientology

Fantastic. Hayes has such a soulful voice. I like how he's not afraid to range from slower songs to upbeat funky stuff in the same album

First song by itself is perfect, I love it...it's just 12 minutes long so I don't want it showing up randomly...so I will have to save this album somewhere so I can play it in full every once in a while.

Great stuff but man I'm not sure what I'm supposed to get out of that last track

The absolute swagger. Nine minutes of storytime followed by 11 minutes of groove for "Phoenix." At this point in the timeline we have better makeout music than Isaac Hayes, but only by hair's widths. Also I love 2Wicky by Hooverphonic and the whole reason is that it's basically a dub remix of Walk On. That's all on Hayes, not Hooverphonic.

J'iame issac haynes. Ce n'est pas superfly mais certain riff et chanson sontres bonne avec un bon groove et fubk. 3.75

Overall, I was kinda into it.

The looooong last track really kills the momentum

Killer instrumentals on the opening track set the expectations high for this album. Unfortunately, it doesn't fully live up to those expectations. Still an enjoyable listen, just not a stand out hit.

Han har bättre album vafan, intervju och skit näru

Not my style, very long songs.

King Volcano this guy

As described in the album title

It’s so Chef. A little much and kinda corny after Chef the character, but I’m glad I listened- good perspective on how this influenced Chef

Pretty fuckin' smooooooooth, Chef.

decent album

Ten minute long songs. Jammin. Would be incredible to see live in person. I like it in general but not something to listen to all the time.

i liked it

This fucking slapped. Love a 20 minute long jazz/soul song.

Groovy stuff from start to finish… and a lot of strings

Sould, well done, recognised several parts that have been sampled. Still wouldn't listen to it much as i find this kind of soul too smooth.

A solid album but a bit drown out in places.

Samples galore. Did not know the Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos sample An interesting dig into producers source material, but not much beyond that

Really enjoyed this, but did feel the songs were a bit on the long side, the single edits are more palatable for the casual listen.

Sometimes it's hard to sum up a song with just a word or two, so song titles can be hard to nail down. (And sometimes the song title doesn't even actually hint at the song's actual content to anyone except the writer.) So some artists use whole sentences for song titles (see Sufjan Stevens). Other artists are forced to coin a new compound word to express the vastly complicated themes and feelings the song evokes, like a German komposita. (See Outkast's "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" or Funkadelic's "promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad.") It is that spirit that brings us Isaac Hayes' "Hyperbolicsyllablecsesquedalymistic," which at 9:34 of course it's a complicated song that defies easy nomenclature. And yet, somehow the 12 minute "Walk on By" gets a simple name? I knew Isaac Hayes was a soul icon, but didn't know his music. As I should have expected, it's soulful and groovy and easy to listen to if you don't get antsy about it needing more structure. I expected it to be filled with short implorations of a sexual nature. Instead it's a few extended jams with a bit of romance and sex. I would say that it needed more chocolate salty balls or fudge, but Hayes' might not want his entire musical career viewed through a Chef-lens. (Though it has just dawned on me that "Hot Buttered Soul" (or rolls) is totally something Chef would croon.)

Rimelig lækkert, soul, disco, lang numre, freestyle, groovy

Indulgent fun for (specific) indulgent occasions. No real point in spinning this disc before 11pm, or alone.

Now this was pretty cool! Not quite sexy enough to bring me to my good lady with ideas of sweet, sweet loving though. Something about the word buttered, just makes me feel soiled.

Soul correcto.

Agradable

Smooth. 6/10

Chef from South Park, not too bad

Smooth, good beats

This was fine. Certain tracks just dragged for me, but overall it was an okay listen and I think I'll have to accept that soul is still a rough genre for me to really get into. Ah. Some day.

“Walk on By” great track. Those drums on track 2 … I picture Isaac saying, “no fills, no cymbals, you just hold that f***ing beat ‘til I tell you to stop. Got it!?”

Four songs, 45 minutes, felt nicely unhurried and easy to get into.

Not a lot but these beats are much covered

This record is pretty wild. I don't know if I love the whole thing, but I would absolutely put this on in the background any time.

Un megaclàssic del smooth soul que fa honor a la seva fama, ni que sigui per la profunditat estilística de la que fa gala Hayes, amb temes dens i orquestats i la seva veu tan inconfusible fent de fil conductor de tot plegat

Not a huge soul fan, but enjoyed this

It was alright. I recognized some of the songs that have been sampled in rap music. I am sure plenty of babies were conceived to this album.

Smooth as expected, interesting long takes on pop and country.

6/10 Legal

Не плохой, нашел сэмпл из любимого Lemonade Beyonce

Love some of it

four songs.

It was pretty vibey. The artist's voice is pretty nice and soulful, but I don't see myself coming back to this record. Music is pretty good, just not for me. Highlights: 1, 2, and 4.

Not the best album I've listened to, I felt it dragged on a bit. However I did enjoy the song Hyperbolicsyllablecsesquedalymistic a lot, so for that I give this album a 3/5 stars.

Walk on by, by the time i get to phoenix are great

I prefer when his songs are also a recipe but this is pretty good. Love "By the time I get to phoenix". Why don't all songs have a 9-minute intro?

Soulful

Fantastic voice, only the one single that got me interested though: "Walk On By"

OK soul music, nice guitar

Fine. I appreciate Isaac, his voice is great. The music is classic. But I can't help but find the album kind of boring.

Good album, but some of the songs dragged on a bit. Very calming and easy to listen to though

some good soul, but some really really slow build-up

decent soul sound! seemingly genre defining.

kinda zoned out in the first half but i get behind one woman, the rest of it's good background music

Very smooth, very slick.

Good album

Entiendo que está bien, pero me cansé a medio.

Just OK for me. Didn’t really draw me in.

FT: Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic

Splendid

Me han gustado un par de temas pero no es mi estilo de música preferido.

Soul correcto.

second isaac hayes album. Still "fine"

very enjoyable and not as tiring as you would expect for 18 minute long songs

Buttery and funky!

Does it get any more soulful than this? I don't think so!

Wow, only four tracks for 45 minutes, I like that. I know Isaac Hayes for the Shaft soundtrack, but this is really solid too. Nice, long grooves to settle into. Kind of crazy that this was released in 1969, I normally associate this kind of soul music with the '70s. Nothing amazing, but a good album nonetheless. Favorite tracks: Walk On By, Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic (just had to type that out). Album art: I've seen this one countless times. Gotta be an iconic cover for the bald community. Though seeing hair follicles at this resolution might set off some trypophobia for some people. 3.5/5

Semibängeri Bra soul fiilis

It was ok.

Good soul, background music, long songs

I enjoyed the album but the songs are very long. 45 mins for only 4 songs?!

Too old school for me.

Groovy, love-making tunes

Pretty good shit

Would be higher if he was talkin' 'bout Shaft...

This has some mastery of production and filling of sound. I will only give it three stars though because it's so short, it's pretty much an EP. Careful, this is baby making music

Epic soul adventures, explorations of song. Disgustingly self-assured, and sexy as fuck.

Familiarity: 1/10 Notes: one of Isaac Hayes' earlier works, Hot Buttered Soul is 4 tracks long, taking up roughly 45min of one's time. Despite the track brevity these songs are blues driven jams. A live experience within a studio album. Real Rating: 6.5/10

Audible chocolate

Interesting r&b. 4 long songs.

That voice

Didn't have a chance to finish this album, although I liked the parts I heard. Am giving 3 stars for now, but reserve the right to bump that up or down on a more thorough listening.

Interesting album that has a bit of an edge to it, definitely better R&B than Maxwell the day before but still not enough to get 4 stars for me

I appreciate what’s going on here, but it was too long and windy and jammy feeling for my tastes today

Some good ones.

It was so-so until that last track delivered 18 mins of hot buttered soulful waffle. 2/5

I had a hard time listening to this without thinking of South Park, but that says way more about me than it does about Isaac Hayes.

Not a big fan of soul, but I like the instrumentals.

Best of Album: - Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic - One Women

VERY MEH! I WANTED SOME SALTY CHOCOLATE BALLS!!!

erm bald hed het was wel leuk het warenalleen beejte te lagne liedjes

I liked the funky soul sound and he has a great voice. I thought the extended songs were a bit monotonous. I did not care for his interpretation of Glen Campbell's song.

Its a good album songs are unique and the flow super stylish. Too bad the last song that os 18 minutes long is boring and talkover. Sucked pretty bad

First half was great, second half not so much.

I usually like r&b/soul albums but there is too much talking, the songs are too long, and the instrumental parts comes off as annoying sometimes in this album

it's never woman putting out a 20 min song, the audacity of men, boy calm down

The tracks where he was just talking were kinda odd, otherwise very good jazz album. The only issue is he was talking 3/4 of the time

Hayes is smooth but not my bag

Not what I was expecting - but in a bad way.

Starts strong and buttery, but I lost interesting quickly. Not my thing!

Small number of very long tracks. It's a bit too much of a slow burn for me, never quite reaching a point of grabbing my attention

Smooth af, but I'm not that hot on 18 minute tracks.

My attention span does not cope well with songs over 8+ minutes sorry! Then an interview at the end? I’m ok thanks - I’m sure he’s very good at what he does!

Rustig hoor

Honestly... WTF was the point of this? More than half the album is the same song twice and an interview? Stupid.

Walk on by is a great song. Isaac Hayes has a good voice. These statements are unquestionably true, but i do not need a 12 minute version of the song. I enjoyed the funk of the second track, but even its title is too long even if the first track has made me see 10 minutes as a short track. It just doesn't go anywhere, i can see it being an enjoyable groove high on life (or more likely other substances) in a live environment, but on record it feels like s good case for radio edits. Around the 7 minute mark where we go into a piano and bass break it is just too much and thats before it becomes apparent this is playing the song out. One woman is a far more sedate soulful affair. However it is just too schmaltzy for me and at times i just catch myself picturing the image of chef singing the song. It’s a shame that the more acceptable length song is actually the one i like least. The last track comes on i glance at its length and begin praying for a hidden track rather than a near 19 minute track, but the fact its past three minutes before any singing is even vaguely a possibility and even then it’s only a suggestion, kills all hope. Just shy of the 9 minute mark actually singing breaks out! Unfortunately it’s the schmaltz of track 3. The last few minutes when the organ, horns and drums kick in are a joy, but a short lived one. With some proper editing this is a good ep, without it is self indulgent pap. A good artist either decent material, but ruined by length.

I had never heard this version of Walk On By. It gets full marks for trying something so different, though I'm not sure anything could beat Dionne Warwick. And while I enjoyed it, I didn't need 12 minutes of it. The follow up track that I'm never going to successfully pronounce, was probably my favourite. However, the moment he said "Your sweet phalanges know how to squeeze" all I could picture in my brain was Chef taking about his chocolate salty balls. Also it's again too long. But it did have a rare occurrence of the instrumentation fading between left and right which I enjoyed rather than it making me feel seasick. One Woman. Normal song length: yay! Schmaltzy nonsense: boo! And finally, the track that broke me. 9 minutes of chatting before finally getting to another 9 minutes of actual song should be considered a crime. It's so hard for me to mark this as parts are a 5 and parts are a 1.... Possibly more 1 than 5 though, so I'm plumping for: 2/5

Okay but not my thing.

Absolutely not chefs kiss

got me all horned up at 8am, no need for that. alright I suppose, no massive substance to it. Issac certainly had a voice

135. ok

Ok is the best way to describe it. I was expecting something as ground breaking as Marvin Gaye What's Going On but this ain't that

I went ahead and listened to the singles version as well and by god that is 1000x better. Really don’t want to rate this one so low but I don’t want a 16 minute song to be 8 minutes of dialogue. Not a fan of this at all. Go listen to these songs without the extra bullshit

mellow. chill. talking.

Quite drawn out

4/10 I like the sound but I despise how this album is structured. Maybe I'm not built correctly but I don't need an 18 minute song

Well that bored the shit out of me. 2

File under: songs that are long and don’t justify their length. I see a 4-track album that’s 46 minutes long and we’re already starting from a tough spot, and this didn’t really convince me. I loved some of the piano around the 5 minute mark of hyperbolic.. which felt like maybe it was sampled somewhere?? as a whole not too bad but not that exciting

a couple of songs that I liked, but did not care for the rest of the album

2.5 - no stand out songs, was also pretty hungover so could have been a better frame of mind to listen. Gave it another listen on Sunday but no joy.

Managed to get thru first 2 songs (22 mins long combined) and got bored

Have I listened to this album before? No How familiar am I with this album? I am unfamiliar with this album How do I feel about this artist? Chef! Favorite song(s)? Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic Overall Thoughts: Still not a fan of soul, and I thought it was weird that it was just a few really long songs that had drawn out speaking parts in them.

Fløde.

Couldn't take it seriously.

First, hurray to Demery for recognizing a black American artist. Incredibly, it's a rarity on this list. That said, this album has always frustrated me to no end. The sound is amazing. The songs are interesting. But one has to sit through SO MUCH self-indulgent nonsense that it's almost more trouble than it's worth. By the Time I Get to Phoenix is the perfect example. It IS one of the most beautiful songs of the 20th Century. But dragging it out to 9 plus minutes obscures its poignancy. And taking the liberty to provide another 9 minutes of spoken word introduction consisting of an invented back story is just loopy nonsense.

More of a compilation with some good tracks than a full album

Boring

Cool vibe songs too long though😕

easy listening

I liked it but don't know that I would listen again.

enjoyed but each song was too long for me to revisit. sry!

Perhaps the most extreme example of song length inflation in this period. With 4 tracks in over 40 minutes, it’s fair to say the tracks are dragged out! The sound is grand and well composed (you understand why Hayes worked on a film, Shaft, after this), but even classics like Walk on By seem so strung out.

Isaac Hayes seems to have thought the way to make a great song even better is simply to make it longer. ‘Walk On By’ and ‘By the Time I Get to Phoenix’ are both fantastic songs… in their original sub-three minute forms. I don’t think dragging them out to interminable lengths added anything, and I can definitely live without eight minute-long spoken intros. Unsurprisingly, the shortest song here, ‘One Woman’, was easily the best of the album for me. I can’t say Hayes’s vocals particularly impressed me either; the album’s saving grace was that the band and production were fantastic.

4 songs 46 minutes of Chef singing. Not my thing.

I love three minute pop songs. Two of the greatest ever written are on this album. Walk On By and By The Time I Get To Phoenix are bone fide classics...or at least the originals are. Extending these perfect pop songs beyond the 10 minute mark isn't big and it isn't clever. It's just annoying. Nope!

Album 42 Top 2 favorites off the album: By The Time I Get To Phoenix, One Woman Only two favorites today because 3 of 4 seems like cheating. On second thought, I'll just do a definitive ranking: it's the order of the album backwards. Ta daaaaaa. Alright, so I didn't love this one sound-wise, but I did like the story in By The Time I Get To Phoenix. I think Hayes has a good voice. It was actually the instrumentation in this one that didn't wow me, particularly on the first two tracks. Something about the theatricality of Walk On By just didn't appeal to me on this album. 45 minutes for 4 tracks... did it need to be 45 minutes? Not sure. I was falling asleep (partly my own fault for the time I went to bed, but there wasn't much that excited me about this album). I usually like soul. I don't know what happened here. I don't think I'll come back to this one.

Ikkje for meg

Hmm. There are parts I liked a lot, but also extended passages that left me stone cold - so it just doesn't work for me as an album. It might have been fantastic for some people, it's interesting that it came out in 1969, but it just doesn't work for me. 3/10.

surprised I didn't like this one that much 2

Don't like but it have some good instruments Rate 3/10

Too much talking

First off it has a way more modern feel then 1969. I feel like this could have easily come out in the 2000's. (Except the backup vocals, something about a small group of ladies as your backup singers really screams 60's and 70's.) For its time I can see where this was different and pushed the envelope in terms of instruments and melodies. But its actually kind of boring and kind goes on and on. Hyperbolicsyllabise....seemed to drag on longer than the title. Then By the Time I Get to Phoenix had an unnecessarily long explanation or story that really hyped up the song that ended up being nothing. If he had shortened songs up and written one or two other songs I think it would have been much more impressive. I also was slightly disappointed I didn't get to hear him sing and have his voice by more central. Knowing he voiced Chef I thought that his voice would be stronger and more powerful, but honestly it felt like his voice wasn't meant to be the star of the songs. Overall this was kind of a throw away album.

NOW THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUTT - štyri pesničky a aj tak to je 45 min omg😭 - dosť prekvapujúci sound na to že rok 1969, ale trz keď nad tým rozmýšľam tak ani nie je to taký uzemnenejší jazz na pohľad, ale potom it gets really funky sometimes 1. Strašne dlhé intro, lyrics skôr v strede, ale I like them. Všeobecný sound je nice, ale až tak ma to neoslovilo, it's way too long for me. 2. Táto má zase iný postup, všetok text na začiatku potom skĺzne do akejsi jam session. Idk how I feel about this, still long, ale nie až tak 9:36. 3. Táto má iba 5 minút, bojím sa ďalšej, lebo to znamená že posledná má asi 15 😭😭 - might be my fave, páči sa mi Hayesov slower sound, má ten rnb hlas proste na tento typ love songov - omg wait, this is about cheating 🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨 hold onnn - “woman making me do wrong“ sir that's all you - ale I stand by this being my fave sound zatiaľ 4. 18:44 guys I'm so cooked nemam attention span na toto oml
