It was muddy
Solid blues album, hadn't really heard Muddy Waters before but liked his sound
Landmark album, classic blues, solid 3
really good music just something i have to be in the mood to listen to
I respect the blues. If I were walking through a park and saw a free concert of blues I would definitely stop and listen. Listening to this album I can recognize that what I think of as classic blues was popularized by muddy Waters. However, after a couple tunes I was no longer interested. A real blues fan probably goes bonkers over this album, but to me it’s “just the blues“.
muy ingenioso el waso, pero no me lleno, no estoy en etapa de blues

Was good. But not for me.
FAVS (top 3): i got my brand on you, tiger in your tank, goodbye newport blues mençoes honrosas: soon forgotten, ive got my mojo working, meanest woman é um album ao vivo é dahorinha parece q o povo q tava la tavam se divertindo mas nada dms sinceramente, mas é bom nota final: 3.5/5
This was pleasant enough
I think this album is a great start to this 1001 album journey that I have going on. I love jazz or soul whatever you might call this genre because I don't know where to check on Spotify for genre, (tomorrow I will search up the album genre into a search engine) I think albums like this are time capsules that aren't opened as much as they need to be. It feels like you are actually there and watching Muddy Waters perform (I would clap along with the audience when songs ended). All in all I give this album a low six out of ten I would say, (side note but I think I am gonna try to make a rating system that I can just use for the rest of the albums but for now I'm going to be doing something in a similar fashion to Anthony Fantano). While being a nice album to listen to you can tell with songs like this that are very old they would be repetitive, lots of lyrics being said over and over again, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy that type of music. all in all, a good album that I most likely will be relistening to (whether it be to look back on day one or just listening through my 1001 albums playlist on spotify).
I forget how much I actually really like this style of proper classic blues music. As much as I do enjoy the more modern adaptation of blues rock, going back to something like this which is where it all started is always an experience I gain something from. I don't think that this being a live album really does it any favours, it's just a small collection of songs that happens to be a live album, and for some reason this performance was deemed worthy of that despite feeling pretty average to my ears. I still really liked this but I do much prefer what Muddy Waters has achieved in the studio as opposed to some random live album like this one is.
You cant beat a blues harmonica and this delivers from the first track. This is just good old fashioned blues with tracks like ‘Baby Please Don’t Go’ showing the art off to its finest. The mix of instrumentation is just a joy. ‘Tiger In Your Tank’ is an upbeat burst of energy. Yes a lot of the lyrics are Muddy repeating the title over and over, but it is still fun. ‘I’ve Got My Mojo Working’ is a great track that definitely gets your feet tapping. Not sure we really need it reprised though. Overall i dont think this is a great album, but it’s still highly enjoyable and a good example of the music that went on to influence so many thst came after it.
Good
yeah was good enough, maybe i’m crazy but some tracks could have deffo been inspo for some of the doors stuff
Pas mon style
I liked listening to this album, but I don't have much to say about it. Apart from the few song that were played more than once, I have no qualms with this album. And I thought it was fun to hear him introduce every song before playing it. Overall I most likely will not be listening to this again, but it was pretty good. Three stars. (Favorite track: I Got My Brand On You.)
Blues som blues
Muddy F’n Waters baby I wish we got a studio album, but I’ll take what I can. Not my favorite project I’ve heard so far, mainly because it’s live, but I can still admire the absolute powerhouse of influence here.
I love the blues, and the songs are slow enough to actually catch the lyrics, and the stories are so much fun. Give this man a pencil and paper, please! Also the first live blues record I really like how this list is very open to live records. I liked this Blues is awesome. I got my fill I do not leave wanting to explore more but I love this vibe and I could give this a spin anytime. I love hearing an audience and getting the energy even from a recording.
A weak 3, nothing id jump to come back to but was enjoyable.
One live album that definitely merits its inclusion. My favorite of his is however, Electric Mud which I feel is one of the most important records of the genre. 8/10 [KEEP]
Of its time, decent.
Classic Blues. Really nice, not my usual listen. Song highlights: I got my brand on you, Tiger in your tank, Feel so good. Strong infuences on UK Rock and Blues of the 1960's. 7/10.
I'm not a straight blues guy, generally. The live setting adds a lot to it, and it's a pleasure to listen to in the background, but I don't know that I'd actively seek it out.
Solid blues.
Dear sweet Muddy. That sounds like I am writing as his betrothed from my death bed on the plains of Abraham. I suppose after his last effort "Hard Again" I did experience some of Muddy's "love." As shudder-inducing as the thought of your humble reviewer making sweet tender love to the long dead bluesman, Muddy Waters, the looming spectre of ELEVEN (11) records to review until I catch up is somehow worse. Let's make this snappy. The tiger tank sung blew fat chunks, and blues should almost never have anything but a guitar and the wails of the blues experiencer. The piano? MOST unwelcome. The harmonica went pretty hard in places, so we can let that slide. This has to be the last review for the day. They're getting shorter and worse. This was probably the best thing I heard today though. Great job, Muddy. Mojo=Working 3.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Pants Pissington
A great blues man, very much in his prime here. There is no way of estimating this man’s influence
Blues is for the weekend, very rich, it felt like I was watching a show. With that being said, and knowing it's a hot take, all the songs sound just the same.6/10
fine.
Blu
Its alright
The slang from back then was wild lol
Solid album. Enjoyed it.
Pretty whelmed on this one. Not over nor under. It just plays through nicely without any hiccups. I figured I would like this more because I have liked muddys studio records in the past. Not sure if it was the song selection or the recording or the playing. It all was just what I expected and nothing more.
Eh
Good blues, but a bit stripped down for my tastes.
Mooi raampje naar een andere tijd, fijn om de zondagochtend mee op te starten
I was bored, sorry
My mojo is fully back
I enjoy classic blues, and this was a good one to put on while I was drinking--but alas, a lot of it sounds the same after a while, nothing that blew me away. Muddy Waters is great, but I'd probably rather listen to Freddie King
3/5
Fun, soulful, happy.. The master
nice. should hook this up for a public party. But it's not my flavour and as much as I admire the music, I wouldn't actively listen to the music again unless for a select few times.
Some classic enjoyable blues, fun to hear the live versions from 1960. 3/5 Fave song: I’ve got my Mojo working
It was ok -- I found the blues songs kind of repetitive and not too exciting.
Love some jazzy blues. Not my genre but eats down
Great blues and an amazing sound, but I'm not a big blues fan. Two or three songs are good, but the whole album feels dense.
Enjoyed it. Great sound for a 1960 live album.
It’s ok Nothing special Ολα ίδιο βαινπ 3/5
Very upbeat and vibrant. Meanest Woman was my favorite, I like his energy, but all of his songs are energetic, and I also liked when he talked to the crowd. 6.3/10
Great sounding album. I've listened to a lot of Blues over the years and I'm a little played out, I'm familiar with many songs on here already. Good songs done well.
pretty good. maybe got what i was expecting. probably would give it a lot better rating if i knew what i was talking about.
Meh, live, same-samey, inoffensive.
I don’t really get blues either.
Quintessential blues album. It’s good for what it is, I was able to listen through without wanting to skip anything but it all started to sound the same after a while and some of the songs were a bit repetitive for my taste (Got My Mojo Working). (3)
lots of 12 bar blues, lots of euphemisms for sex...no surprises here
I quite like these live albums - so many it seems recorded in Newport. Recognized many notes and phrases first learned through later artists - even Weird Al polka version of Mojo Working. I favorited one song Hoochie Coochie.
it was okay 3.5
Good
"At Newport 1960" is a live performance album by Muddy Waters. Waters is still to this day a legend in Blues you'll find recommended when looking for iconic Blues musicians. Personally I'm not really a fan of live recordings. You lose the crisp clarity of a studio recording and you lose the feeling and emotion of hearing music live. It's a worse of both worlds in my opinion but this is the specific album recommended through "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die." I think the reason this was included on the was both because Muddy Waters is a legend but also for a piece of this album's history. The day before Waters was set to perform, Ray Charles performed with Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross. Allegedly the drunken crowd of around 300 were so bad the police resorted to tear gas and water hosing before calling in the National Guard. Waters and his band were planning to leave but were told the USIA (United States Information Agency) were recording the festival as a means of propaganda to play in foreign countries. Seeing the opportunity this could, Waters and his band decided to play after all. I've heard Muddy Waters before but my aversion to live recordings meant I never heard this album before. Many of these songs are the kinds of songs you'll often hear covered over and over by many different Blues artists. (I've always wondered if this is why some people say Blues or Jazz all sound the same, is they don't realise they might be hearing different renditions of songs you'll hear every Blues/Jazz play try their hand at.) I Got My Brand On You, I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man, and I Feel So Good are timeless classics to me. No matter who does these songs, they're good.
get's you movin', but it a monotonous way
Musically, It’s a pretty cool album. Time capsule. Can’t help thinking of the movie, Green Book. Muddy playing in front of an audience of adoring white bigots. What a weird world.
ну джаз, больше и нечего сказать.
I think he's got his mojo workin. Blues ear candy right here, good stuff.
Pretty boring if you ask me. Favorites: Baby Please Don't Go, Goodbye Newport Blues Least favorites: Got My Mojo Working Pt. 1, Got My Mojo Working Pt. 2 Rating (out of 10): 6.5/10
Actually good
Really good! I'm too tired to give it a proper review.
Great to listen to a live album from a legend, but didn’t move me .
I DIDNT SAVE YHIS GODDAMN LONG ASS REVIRW ARE U KDIDIJ F MEEE DJIEJS SHAVAJ
Live albums are for fans, there’s not a single live album that should be on a list of must-listen to albums. This one was fine.
Nothing exceptional, but good music.
average
Been looking for a good blues album for a while and I think I found it
I enjoyed got my mojo working, but sadly the songs seemed to monotone for me. Still the drums were amazing
3.5
Hugely influential, but I just don’t vibe with the blues like this. 3 stars for the influence though.
it wasn't bad
⭐⭐⭐ Engagerande, svårt att hålla foten stilla. Trevligt album att lyssna på under en arbetsdag. Inte svårt att förstå att detta album 1960 måste ha inspirerat de engelska rockgrupperna som kom några år senare. Bäst är I'm your hoochie coochie man, Tiger in your tank, I've got my mojo working och speciellt crescendot i I've got my mojo working pt.2.
Muddy Waters is classic. Even though it was a live album it was fun to listen to.
Not my genre of music, but hard to ignore the wonderful vocals alongside the upbeat harmonica and piano. Wonderful album, enjoyed it even though I’m not a regular jazz/R&B listener.
Good sound. Might play this in the right setting.
Still not a fan of live albums.
...
I'am not a fan of jazz music, but this album is good jazz album
👍🏻
Entertaining set from the legend himself.
It's good, but sanitized for the delicate souls at Newport. It's like he is applying for the position of being your hoochie-coochie man rather than informing you with confidence of his role in hoochie-coochie matters.
It's enjoyable but I'm apparently listening to the reissue version, which has four studio versions that I like better than the live cuts.
Foundational, but probably I won't listen to it again.
Very danceable. Obviously seminal. Sadly, to my ears, the tracks get a bit samey.
A quintessential blues album that I very much see the value in, but I am not the biggest blues fan myself, unfortunately. Still though, wonderful voice and some good melodies.
6/10
Rating: 7/10 Really solid live blues set full of originals which is what I really like. A big turn off for me in 50’s and 60’s music is the heavy prevalence of covers and it makes it far more fresh to have a guy like this just play some good original compositions. It’s also well produced for its time and stands as a good listen to this day. Really no complaints even though I’m not particularly passionate about its genre
GOT MY MOJO WORKIN' GOT MY MMRRBBGGLGLG WORKIN' Good energy pretty fun but not totally my thing. BUT as far as Newport music festivals in the 60s albums that I'm not totally into, I kinda liked it 5.5/10
This was a fun album! Very classic blues sound and can hear the influence on so much of rock music. Top Songs: I Got My Brand On You, I’ve Got My Mojo
Thank you Muddy for giving us the Stones, Hendrix, ACDC and Zeppelin. Pity about Clapton, though.
I can only imagine what a party it would have been hearing this music live. I loved the trilling piano and the soulful harp. Favorite song: Soon Forgotten "There been so many people forgotten, one day I'm gonna forget you." 3.5 stars
Solid early rock/blues album
This might be my only exception to hating live albums.
Legendary Muddy Waters, pretty solid for the most part, I'm not too huge a fan of classic blues but this was a fun listen. Top Track: Meanest Woman
Primer álbum de blues que escucho, me parece. Interesante experiencia, pero diría que no es mi género favorito. Me parece repetitivo y monótono, aunque puede subir el animo
keep throwing blues music my way and i’ll enjoy every second of it
I dig it
Azul azul y más clásico azul
Good stuff here. More energetic than I was expecting and that really increased my enjoyment.
Enjoyable listen, but wouldn't likely come back to many of the songs on my own time.
Heel erg cool, maar af en toe ook wel een tikkeltje saai, een mooie 3 sterren
Deze blues is moeiteloos cool
A couple of cool songs and some less interesting ones.
Var litt kult, var litt kjedelig. Monoton vokal/melodi
It's fine. I get that he was very influential, but it's all very same-y.
Good stuff
Really great for the genre. Not really my style, but no denying how good it is.
Personally, I really enjoyed this. It’s a great recording, and Muddy’s voice is fantastic. Creatively, though, I wasn't really impressed. It’s just a collection of variations on a 12-bar blues progression, good ones at that, but I can’t bring myself to give that 4 stars. Historically, though, I'm sure it’s very important.
Mojo good, otherwise average.
definitely need to listen to it again
Probably a 4 with better sound quality. The songs are kind of limited by having about 12 words each, though.
Nice to listen to.
Fun, not something I’d listen to often
I love that this was recorded live and you can hear the audience! The musicianship is next level!!
Surprisingly fun listen
A genre I wouldn't seek out but was pleasantly surprised by this album. Smooth vibes
not bad
pretty good but a bit repetitive
good but not my style
My favorites from this were soon forgotten and tiger in your tank. It was cool to see where this style originated.
I'm not the biggest blues person but this is about as good as it gets!
Really good blues, nice songs. But not a coherent album
Nice old blues, live. Idk what to add. Faves: I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man, Tiger In Your Tank, I've Got My Mojo Working
More bluesy than a blue thing
It was a good album, I’m not a huge fan of blues but I appreciate it nonetheless
Super cool på den old school måde.
Loving it - impossible not to move your legs and hips. Live versions are always better!! Especially 'I've got my brand on you'.
it is blues. it is live.
Good blues album for sure. Just nothing I will likely listen to again
начала читать другую страну болдуина под это, вроде вайб но я оч не люблю звук гармошки (?) или что это … короче это вот джаз который мне не нравится
first half really good i loved
3⭐️ bluesy sound, not my usual but a nice listen and cool to think about the influence it had on later artists. I love that it’s live - especially ‘I’ve got my mojo working pt 2’ where you can hear the crowd songs I already knew: n/a fave new song(s): I’ve got my mojo working pt 2
Beetje jazzy rolling stones, niet mega onder de indruk. Wel classic.
I enjoyed his voice and the songs. every song was nice to listen to but It’s not something I would especially want to listen to. none of the songs stand out to me so I’ll probably forget about this album after a while. other than that I think it’s a well made album and I wouldn’t be upset if I came across any of the songs in my daily life and maybe even in my playlist. I would give it a 3.8/5
I wouldn’t have picked this out - but glad I listened
Hm, same song syndrome…
It's crazy he plays Mojo Working twice, and honestly he could have played it a third time. 'I've Got My Mojo Working - Pt. 2' easily is the best thing on this album. The rest of the album feels like some standard blues, certainly formative for a lot of artists to come after him, Muddy Waters is a legend. I will say the album feels a little one note, it helps that it's live it makes it a bit more interesting to me, but I wouldn't say I was blown away by this one. That being said it is some undeniably good music.
Mad decent! Wasn't mad at it.
It was a good blues set but it was live so I was hoping for some more energy, personality and passion to shine thru here. Both the band and Muddy Waters did their job, but they didn't do much beyond. Showed up, played their set and done. It was a good enough listen but didn't pull me into the live experience whatsoever. 3 stars
blues is almost exclusivly on the 12 bar blues so most songs sounds the same... Still i love it. Both hearing and playing (because it's just 3 chord, everyone should try and play a 12 bar one time in their life, haha). But i can't really give it higher than a 3 even though i could listen to this all day.
Exactly why I started this challenge. An album I was very unlikely to listen to that I ended up really enjoying in the end. An slice of American history. 6/10.
I hate to say it, but this felt entirely forgettable
jazz, i love the instruments and the flow of the music
I have a new founds love for blues, especially live blues. Muddy Waters has perfected the art of song writing and has the talent to sing the lyrics with a swathe cool tone that’s unmistakably blues. His voice is one of few that it would be hard to get sick of, even in between tracks when he’s introducing the songs. Learning that Muddy Waters was such an influential part of blues post war is no surprise at all. The band showcases their talent and capabilities of jamming together as Muddy Waters leads them through his songs. I particularly liked the ‘I’ve Got My Mojo Working’ & ‘Got My Mojo Working - Pt. 2’ and how they contrast, I thought that was very clever. Favourite tracks are: ‘Tiger In Your Tank’, ‘I’ve Got My Mojo Working’, and ‘I’ve Got My Mojo Working - Pt 2’.
Standout Songs: I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man Baby, Please Don’t Go Tiger In Your Tank I’ve Got My Mojo Working
This was an incredible New Year’s Day listen and totally hit the vibe right to start 2026. Incredible live performances by the entire band, and clean, soulful vocals. Will definitely listen again soon!
Nice jazz, nothing impressive
Eh
The real deal so I hear. don’t really listen to blues, I liked this more than I thought I would. God it got repetitive. I enjoyed this though I wish there was a studio version too
A great blues album with live recordings. Lyrically a little repetitive but catchy regardless. Not 100% sure it’s my vibe but a jam nonetheless
Not my cup of tea but pretty good.
A great live performance from a blues legend, a solid compilation that is worth listening to but I do not see myself coming back to.
Du bon blues mais pas vraiment mon type de musique
I've Got My Mojo Working is a masterpiece. 3.5
prefer the live versions ofc i’ve got my mojo working and soon forgotten are favorites
Funky and fun
It's good, but not really for me. I appreciate the blues and what they established for rock, but find it hard to listen to a lot of it. And while Muddy and John Lee are bastions of the blues, I can't listen to more than a song or two at a time. For a live recording of that era, I'm surprised at the recording, Pretty clean. Why would you play the same exact song with 2 different singers back to back? "I've Got My Mojo Working" is weird. Solid musicianship from a tight band. Gotta give it a 3 because it's not my cup of tea exactly, but it's worth listening to at least once.
This is sort of a weird album on paper. It’s both a studio album AND a live album. That being addressed it is a solid and memorable rock and roll album. It’s also sorta hard to review cause everything about it that makes it “simple” and “accessible” is also what makes it foundational material for decades worth of music of hundreds of different genres, so it’s important but also basic. Definitely an album that won’t disappoint but won’t rock your world.
obviously very influential for its time but the blues are just not for me
6/10
Pretty good blues album
Smooth
This felt a little tamer than I was hoping. Not bad at all, but not as bad ass as I wanted.
I don’t really like jazz, and this album didn’t really change that. However… I admire the restraint. Jazz albums like this are usually a massive circle jerk of pointless 8 minute solos, and this album bucked the trend. Cheers to that.
Loved this, prefer this to the other MW we got. Lottaaa charisma. I couldn’t really tell you what made each song different from each other, just a bluesy blur and for that I’m going 3 for a passing grade. Muddy Waters: I approve.
Obviously foundational but a little repetitive - sometimes literally, with the Mojo reprise. I liked “Hard Again” album alot more.
not my first time listening to this album, i love chicago blues, so enjoyed it a lot.
Great vocals, easy listening. Classic blues music, makes you feel like you’re in the South in the 1950’s sipping a lemonade on the porch on a sweltering August day. Just not really my genre.
Good album for a coffee afternoon
exactly what you'd expect
This isn't something I'd actively want to listen to again in my free time, but there's something very fun about listening to a live album!
A really solid live album, however I don’t think I will be returning to it.
It was fine.
Very good in its style.
3/5
Really amazing experience, I gave it a listen while playing geometry dash and it actually gave me a little self confidence boost, loved the fact that it was live coz I felt the atmosphere and it made me feel like I was there.
Album nem relaxante e bom, sendo um divisoe de águas para sua epoca, entao merece isso
For such an influential album - the album that brought blues to a suburban audience and across the Atlantic to the likes of the Rolling Stones - and for a live album of a reportedly legendary performance, for some reason I remained pretty much unmoved by this album. I don’t think I’m an electro-blues fan but I do love the energy of a live album, but this don’t sound like a live album until we got to I’ve Got My Mojo Working and you could hear the audience react. Until that point I hadn’t really reacted either. I guess not for me, but I’d happily listen to it again some time. 3 stars.
There’s a reason why lame white dudes made this their personality.
I enjoy old school blues and it all started with Muddy Waters. This live album includes his classics "Hoochie Coochie Man", "Baby, Please Don't Go" & "I Got My Mojo Working" (all covered by others a million times since). He's just not a dynamic performer or vocalist, it all seems a bit flat to me. The band is solid, but it's all sorta tame. Outside the tracks mentioned above, I enjoyed "Feel So Good" but didn't care for the monotonous "Tiger In Your Tank". "Mojo" is super repetitive, so much so that "Mojo Pt 2" was not necessary to include in the live show. I'd much rather listen to John Lee Hooker, BB King, Buddy Guy or Albert King, but it was enjoyable, just not all that memorable. 3 stars.
Proper old school blues. Enjoyable.
A wonderful recording of a seminal time in music.
I like the album but maybe I'm not in a blues mood today, cuz none of it really caught my interest outside of it being a pleasant background album. No hate
don’t usually listen to blues but this had me choreographing in my head
Muddy's on his best behavior for the Newport mucky mucks, so it's not one of his killer records, but darn it all, it's Muddy Freakin' Waters.
Classy, stylish, pleasant overall
Eh. Fine for what it is.
Sonzeira boa e elementar. 3/5
Probably important! Good blues - I’m not listening to this again tho
That’s some 1-4-5 baby! Trying to figure out why I think 1-4-5 is cool and rad when Jimi Hendrix or Jack White does it vs this and I think it’s just electric loud guitar = dopamine for me. This is still phenomenal 1-4-5 though. Mr Waters has a phenomenal vocal performance throughout this thing, he’s having fun, the band is tight, you can’t ask for much more. I will assuredly never come back to this but I am glad I listened to it and it definitely has a place on the list.
Ooh
Indeed the mojo is working
Yes. 'I Got My Brand On You' is a strong opener. A fun listen.
it’s good! it’s muddy waters! how do i rate the blues? i don’t know. i like this. is it great? yes. would i put this on again? the questions are endless. it’s good? it’s muddy waters.
Ihan ok livelevy. Hyviä ja tuttuja biisejä ja Muddy oli tuttu entuudestaan.
3 out of 5. Ok I can see why this album is historic as it is.
Not bad for a live album
It’s good, but doesn’t have the ‘lightning in a bottle’ energy of the other live albums we’ve reviewed. And so repetitive…
I am not a blues appreciator, but this one is pretty good.
Blues isn’t really my thing and for the first few tracks I was not feeling this whatsoever. Then I got to I Feel So Good which I really enjoyed and I liked the album from then on. I’ll see later on with my second listen if the first part of the album hits differently knowing that I like the second half. Top Track - I Feel So Good
Blues artist went to a jazz festival.
Enjoyed this one and liked the energy of it being a live album. The songs were a bit too similar and the lyrics were often a bit repetitive for me. It was fun to listen to, but maybe not one I’d return to. Fav song: Soon Forgotten Least fav: Tiger In Your Tank
Understand why it's on the list. Clearly very influential guy and a great voice. I just found it all a tad too similar, didn't wow me. Favourite song: I Feel So Good Least: I've Got My Mojo Working
Album No. 0073 on my list. Of course I've been aware of Muddy Waters before, and I was curious about this album - never listened to it before. I get why this is considered an important album. You can definitely hear the impact that Waters had on the audience and his charisma. Unfortunately, things are a little repetitive (may just be the blues genre for me). My favorites were "I Got My Brand On You", "Tiger In Your Tank", and "I've Got My Mojo Working". 3/5 stars.
3.0
Blues, really enjoyed the live performance. Liked "Tiger In Your Tank" - Live
Er einhver munur á svona blúsplötum? Þetta er samt bara gott og smá auka oomph svona live. Kannski 3,5 stjörnur en ekki námundað upp í 4.
To be honest having read about it I was expecting this album to be much grittier and searing than it is, but I guess that’s what you get at the Newport Jazz Festival. Probably I would prefer “Muddy Waters at Some Dive with Sweat Running Down the Walls 1955”, but still, it IS pretty good although the live element doesn’t add much for me.
Suena increíble y es en vivo. Y en 1960. Un genio. 6/10
I can’t knock the historical significance of Muddy Waters but it’s kind of a doozy for a modern listener. Three stars.
I like Muddy Waters, but I don't like most live albums. This one is pretty good though, and he plays the blues like nothing else matters.
Great live blues album from Muddy Waters. As with a lot of albums, I’m not sure what makes it “special” as far as being included on this list, but it was really good. But there are a lot of blues albums that are really good.
Proper blues. Not my favorite genre, and gets a bit repetitive for me, but this is the real, real good stuff from it. 3/5.
*1960. *Live jazz album. *Upbeat, good singalong songs. RATING - 7/10
Выдающееся выступление и альбом, но для более высокой оценки не хватает еще пары хитов мадди вотерса, поэтому только 3. Ну и еще - потому что я не люблю концертники
This is one of those albums I appreciated listening to, and would not have seeked out if it wasn’t for the site. Obviously I have heard of the legendary Muddy Waters. Truly a revolutionary, and one of the best to ever do it. What I didn’t expect was to enjoy his music as much as I did. So, it’s very dated, obviously, but it is so incredibly easy to listen to that it really doesn’t matter. The repetitive nature makes it just the slightest bit less enjoyable, but I would take this any day of the week over something like Jazz. Muddy has a great voice and can play the guitar very well to boot. His charming and confident nature radiate with each song on the album. While this isn’t something I would often return to, I don’t believe this album has a single song I would skip on it. My favorite song on the album was the all time classic “I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man”. Very glad I got to spend the day with Muddy Waters. This is absolutely foundational music for so many reasons, and still holds up well today.
Not bad blues album, great while studying not sth wow,#.
3.5
A bit one-note but makes up for it with a rich soundscape and great performances.
Don't really know why a live album is on here? Anyways blues isn't my favourite genre but an enjoyable listen non the less. Love his voice.
Love Muddy Waters, hate live albums. This is the middle ground.
Can recognize the significance of the artist, music, and album.
Not my sort of music. Unfair to score it
3.0 - Ok
Another that I’ll appreciate for what it is. Blue isn’t my go to.
Solid blues
Im a sucker for mid-1900s music, reminds me of fnv. I dont really listen to it outside of the vibes, so no song really stuck out to me.
Solid but a bit repetitive as you’d expect
Has some variety, a decent pace, sounds nice and doesn't stay too long, I don't know how much more I could ask for from this early on, but it probably achieves as much as it needs to
Another in a long line of albums that are just ok. Did I enjoy this? Yeah. Would I ever come back to it? Probably not. Some interesting songs, but not enough here to be fascinating.
OK, with a lot of the "influential" picks on this list, I don't really hear it. With this - you can easily see the thread that becomes the base "the 60s" is built on. It's still not really my genre, but the genres I do love owe it a debt of gratitude.
good
Pretty good. I Got My Brand On You is super catchy
I think it's just to elevated for my pop taste
Cool!
I enjoyed it, but (to my ears) this is quite repetitive (and to be fair, there are actual repeats of songs)
I can hear why this album is on this list, but there's something about it that's not for me. Not sure what. Maybe too much repetition?
Dated. I’m sure it was fantastic in its day.
Need a relisten but nice Sunday morning vibes
Muddy waters is a blues legend for a reason, just an absolute masterclass in how to make a 12-bar blues sound special every time. With that being said, it is difficult for a track to really standout when they are all based on the same form. Incredible guitar work though.
I found myself appreciating this album more than actually enjoying the music, but it’s definitely a solid listen. Also, remarkably clear and crisp for a live album. Best Track: Soon Forgotten
7/10
a live album... interesting... the songs do sound very similar... live songs are lowkey better than the recorded ones haha love that energy :) lower 3 area maybe even 2.8 or sth
An ok blues album that was in the very early stages of moving away from Chicago-style blues towards the more polished R&B and soul sounds. Best: Baby, Please Don't Go Worst: Soon Forgotten
70
It was the bluesiest of blues
Iconic but a lil too gritty
Old school blues, sounds good not my favorite though a lot of rythems sound the aame
Off the cuff remark: while it put a smile on my face and got my toes a-tappin somehow didn't quite live up to the legendary status. Standout track: Tiger. In your tank Revisit?: perhaps I should?
Не моя музыка. Возможно до появления Битлз это ещё интересно было слушать, но после - увольте. Для меня скучно и не интересно. 5 из 10.
My first real introduction to Muddy Waters. Would have preferred a studio album versus a live album but it was still a good introduction.
Solid. Great recording sound. Can’t believe this was recorded live in 1960 with quality like this.
Not my preference for music, but I did find it enjoyable. ★★★
Good document of a past era, the gentleman blues artist. Enjoyed.
Short and fun. I loved his interactions with the audience
Not the hugest Blues fan but it is difficult for me not to like this-one of the foremost Blues musicians of all time playing some great new tunes and some reworkings of old classics such as Baby, Please Don’t Go, one of the greatest songs ever, whoever’s doing it.
fuck eric clapton
Blues really isn't my genre but it's a good recording and good album the man was extremely talented.
This is the highest rating I will give to a live album. Muddy Waters is a legend!
Pretty solid blues music. Not much to say
Love Muddy. Heard some of the track from this album before. The guy playing the harp (James Cotton?) is fantastic. Just great blues music.
Some good listening
aardig, maar erg gedateerd
I'm not typically a Blues person, but my opinions are shifting with age. I'm also finding I enjoy live records more than I did previously, and At Newport 1960 is no exception. Muddy Waters plays the tunes. Nothing particularly special about this performance; just decent Blues tunes. I'm a little disappointed by this slower rendition of "Hoochie Coochie Man". It just doesn't feel as lively as it could be. Still not really Blues fan, but this was nice. Essential :)
Muddy Waters is another name I hear come up from time to time, but if you had asked me to name a song by him (or even what genre he was known for) prior to today, I probably would have failed. For that reason, I'm glad this album is on this list. At the same time, it kind of feels like At Newport 1960 was chosen over one of his studio albums as an excuse to include a variety of his early career hits by proxy, as it isn't a particularly compelling live album (compared to something like At San Quentin by Johnny Cash). That said, it's an interesting time capsule with really good recordings (especially for 1960), but Muddy's blues formula wore out fairly quick for me here. It does pick up some momentum around the time he plays "Tiger in Your Tank" (and you can tell the audience gets a second wind around that point as well), but it's stylistically just not my thing. I'm a white man in my late 20s – who would have thought? Speaking of, I learned during my research of this album that "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man" was actually the origin of the "stop-time riff" that would eventually be popularized by Bo Diddley. As a young white adult, I mainly know the riff from George Thorogood & the Destroyers' "Bad to the Bone," which Thorogood apparently pitched to both Waters and Diddley before deciding to just record it himself. I genuinely can't imagine having the kind of self-confidence it would take to essentially rip off someone's song and then pitch that ripoff to them. Insane. Highlights: I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man, Baby Please Don’t Go, Tiger in Your Tank, I Feel So Good, I’ve Got My Mojo Working
funky, good licks, good background music
Not bad 3
The tracks on this album are good. The only memorable ones for me are the last 2 tracks. Favourite Track(s): Goodbye Newport Blues Least Favourite Track(s): Baby, Please Don't Go
7/10
Good, but very much of the same thing. Very basic blues. Favorite song: tiger in your tank.
Classic blues deserving of respect but not my jam
Some solid stuff there
Solid stuff! Not super remarkable but will definitely listen to it again in the future.
Not in the mood, but it's okay.
I find blues a little repetitive and a little goes a long way. The live energy adds quite a bit and the atmosphere is enjoyably woozy, but not massively for me.
I like blues, just not live albums!
Fint folk album.
Classic blues. Liked Tiger in your Tank
This album is a true testament to Muddy Waters' talent and ability to engage with an audience. He built up the crowd's energy gradually, until they were at their peak during his back-to-back renditions of "Got My Mojo Working." That build was so fun to listen to. While some of the energy definitely translated to the live recording, it didn't all translate. I'm sure seeing this performance in person would be one of the best concert experiences ever, but I felt disengaged with this album at times. I think I'm just not a huge fan of live albums generally. To me, they often fall flat sonically and feel far away. This definitely was not a bad album, but it was one I don't think I'll return to.
Totally fine, even if not my thing.
Ersti 5 Minute: Gar nöd wasnich eigentlich lose aber freu mich uf epis neus. Bests lied: baby please don‘t go Final Review: nöd epis wo ich jetzt aktiv lose wür welle, abet zum denebed lese isch es sehr acnehm gsi. So als Nebebescheftigung perfekt
God knows what it means that I love a live album
Interesting music to the older end of what is acceptable to a modern ear. Probably won't return to this one
Entspannter vibe zum malen
Honestly never really dabbled in blues before, so this was different for me. I enjoyed it. I think I'd enjoy it more if I knew more about the genre/history so I would know why it was so monumental. But overall a good listen.
This was enjoyable, solid blues material. Not remarkable, though.
Classic blues
Easy listening, clear vocals.
