Reviews (page 6 of 12)
Classic live album, nice tunes and felt guitars. I can see this was an inspiration to many, such as Jack White.
Relaxed, foot tappy and fun. Transported back to a music club in the 60s. Or sela bar on a good night. Enjoyed the liveness of it and range of instruments
One of the best live albums I've ever heard. You've got Muddy, who is obviously a legend, but you also have Otis Spann and James Cotton, who might not be household names, but are two of the best ever to do what they do. Four stars only because there are better studio albums (and I prefer studio albums over live albums any day of the week).
I like the blues a lot, I'm a sucker for harmonica. I listened to more muddy waters after this and liked some other albums more (getting hard or something)
What a great live album and recording! I know it's kind of a greatest hits album in some ways, but it's still a fun listen, and I'm really impressed at the quality of the live recording. (And thankful that his set even happened, given that the concert was more or less cancelled due to the previous day's violence and police response.)
Wonderful vibe, kicked back with the window open and this album hit the spot. Could only be improved by a porch swing and lemonade. Not complicated or over produced, just good tunes and a mellow voice.
better than i was expecting for 1960, very repetitive but i can also see how stuff i like from the doors could be influenced by this. low 7/10
Loved listening to this.. I only wish I was listening to it live in a dive bar in Memphis.
Country no
Nota: 7,5/10 26/05/2024
Fun
Favorite Tracks: I’ve Got My Mojo Working I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man
Can’t say this held my attention, but it made very pleasant background music
Really vibed to this. Lovely stuff. Simpsons: Yes
Interesting choice for a Muddy Waters album but his voice and style are such unique aspects of old classic blues.
Its a good set but rather subdued for his live stuff thats out there.
Great and classic blues album. I understand the selection as his studio albums do not capture his drive and rage during live performances.
Thanks for being my Hoochie Coochie Man
Favourite song - I feel so good
Good stuff
Very good bluesy music.
Classic blues, works like a charm
Such a good album
Sounds really good for a live album from 1960. It’s also interesting hearing so many sounds and ideas I tend to associate with “blues” from something this early. Good album.
The previous Muddy Waters album that came up on this list was "Hard Again" - which was a comparatively modern blues album with a thick sounding, rock band approach. This, being a bit earlier and recorded live, sounds more "authentic" and natural. I do like the previous album , but this more what I think of when I think of the blues. It's got some songs that are standards... yeah, everything's all good here. Does what it says on the tin.
Loved this!
I complained about his 80s comebacks lack of energy, and this is why. A low tempo album, but one full of life and vitality, and tunes too!
Simply amazing. A bit repetitive but Muddy Waters is brilliant.
Muddy sure as hell has his mojo working! The harp player is fire. The guitars could be mixed up a bit. I generally like my blues with a bit more space, fair to say the drumming really fills the space, heavily jazz.
Ye old worldly guitar. So many attribute so much to this musician. I appreciate it's simplicity.
Man this fella could SING and play the BLUES
i hear the blues a'calling...
There has not been a lot of blues on this list... Great album, love how loose and free the band is. 4.5 🌟
would rate it 6 if i could!
# Playlist track - Baby, Please Don't Go # Notes - Amazing blues. Hard to overstate his influence.
The voice of God, the direct attack on every instrument – this is s strong, substantive, legit classic blues.
Excellent blues/rock vibe.
oh, that’s giving such a free and calm vibe. i don’t like this style of music at all, but!!!!! it works. good good
Despite not being a fan of live albums nor blues music this was surprisingly good.
My brothers quote, “Muddy Waters is as blues as blues gets.”
Fabulous live album. I knew his work much later in his life, but he had a ton of gusto in 1960.
Muddy Waters captures the blues for me. Straight out of Clarksdale, MS in the heart of the Delta. Have to be in the right mood for it, but there are few better.
Good live record. Muddy Waters and his band are tight.
Great listen, awesome live album
💖 i’ve got my mojo working 🗣️ 8️⃣
I can remember my dad trying to make me listen to this album when I was a teenager. All I wanted then was dashboard confessional. So I’m glad I waited to listen to this lol so I can actually appreciate it. Do all the songs blend together tune wise? Yes. But his voice is energetic and passionate. It sounds like they’re giving everything to this album and I love it.
Some good stuff here. Hoochie Coochie Man, Got my Mojo Working, Baby Please Don't Go ... when I hear live albums like this from way back,I can just imagine being there!
Usually depends on my mood what I think of this music. Last night I'd have given 2.5 stars, today it's closer to 4 (better mood, less tired). Gonna give it 4, because if I heard this in a club, I'd be blown away by it.
Great listen. I do find blues a little repetitive sometimes, but there was an infectious joy about this, probably as it’s live, that overrode that. 3.75
3.5/5
I'm certainly starting to get tired of the live albums on this list, but I could never get tired of Muddy Waters.
Imagine playing a song so well that you decide to run it back and play it even BETTER the second time. Eat your heart out John Mayall and Co.
Really good album
Always a good listen with Mr. Muddy Waters, not one of my favorite albums of his but again still a great listen in blues is the best
Great live album, but he's got better stuff if you ask me. I've always loved Muddy Waters.
the mans a legend. This album is great but not my personal fav from him. That post war blues though is something special
Muy buen directo de blues. Es muy interesante lo bien grabado que está.
Good listening
Probably more of a 4.5.
Love me some good blues.
Essential blues. One of the best.
classic blues
Excellent blues album by one of the all time greats.
Great, soulful, tasty guitar licks.
molto piacevole
This was cool. Not lots to say other than I enjoyed it.
I don’t normally listen to blues/jazz but this was an amazing live album. It must’ve been an absolute blast to see this live especially given that it was probably the first time a lot of white people heard blues. 4.0
Excellent, fun, energetic Chicago Blues!
Great live album with a lot of soul. I'm just not the biggest blues fan. 7/10
Normally not a big fan of live recordings, but blues always feel so much more alive when you can hear the sound of the audience blend in with the music.
Muddy Waters is classic, love his sound Top tracks: Tiger In Your Tank, I’ve Got My Mojo Working
Great album. Muddy had his own guitar playing style and it shows in that live album. 4 stars
muddyyyyy chicago blues tiime freumi. macht afoch freud wie sie vom 1 ufs 4i chömed. erste song banger. nocher chunter mit hoochie coochie man. rieeeese tune. but you know im heeeeeaaar. huere geil. s tönt alles so knackig aaah schön. baby plis don go au siick. soon forgotten schö lamsam plus slide gitarre. und s schlagzüg macht eimol de "psh" ufem splash. tiger in your tank slaaappt. i feel so good auuuuu. fuuuuuck. han früener sooo viel blues glost da tuet gad guet. i got my mojo isch chli meh crowdpleaser schnelle blues, live chli geiler als zum so lose glaub. nocher part two?? dune moment.
Excellent album
Great
Nice album!
Would love to be there
Given the right setting it's an amazing album
Got my mojo working …
This is a good live Muddy Waters album! Enjoyed the listen :)
Teils spannend und mitreißend, bspw. im Lied 'Got my Mojo working' (just don't work on You).
Great music. The year I was born.
Exciting live blues from the main Muddy Waters. Everything is quality here - Waters is a commanding frontman and him and the band supply plenty of energy. Playing is tight all around. Songs range from raucous to slower and more somber blues. It’s all good stuff.
BL: Never listened to Muddy Waters properly before, I know he's one of the quintessential blues artists, and what a way to start than with a live album, the jams and the gigs which form the roots of African American interpretive music, truly the best way to indulge in this genre. AL: This is really something special. Creativity and rawness. Waters truly was one of the best to ever do it from the looks of things. Especially the closer, wow. Another thing that really needs to be talked about is the mixing on this album - I'm not sure if the version I was listening to is remastered (it is not labelled as so) but the fact a live recording from 1960 sounds as crisp and developed as it does, when recordings even from the late 70s don't sound anywhere near as professional as this shows the raw talent of all of the creatives within the blues scene at this time, and it's a shame many will not have their names recognised on the same level as their white counterparts of the time. What an awesome record FT: "Goodbye Newport Blues" 4/5
My goodness look at that beautiful archtop guitar on the album cover. Gorgeous. The toughest thing for me to get over with blues is the repetitiveness and the proclivity to use the same chord progressions, the same stingers, the same turnarounds, and the same licks. I hate having this opinion because blues is cool and the idea of blues is always something that I feel like personally resonates with my soul. But I can't help it! I sometimes feel like Blues has a limited vocabulary, or better said only makes words using 10 or 11 letters of the alphabet, instead of the full 26. They certainly make good use of these 10 or 11, but man is it just a very limited approach. Take those 10 or 11 and recreate them over so many years without a lot of experimenting and evolution, and you just get a little.. frustrated? Fortunately I feel less so when listening to these older records and artists. So much of blues was about "making do" but making it will feeling, and these early artists are just so authentic when they are making do and singing about their problems. One of my old jobs had an authentic Newport Jazz Fest poster hanging nonchalantly on a wall in an administrative building. I remember walking down the hallway with some higher up person and I said "Hey you know this is a really nice poster right? It might even be worth some money." and he was like "really? It's mine, I hung it up, I found it in my attic [my memory is failing here] and my wife didn't want me to hang it in the house.". Then, in some harsh but serendipitous way, a few days later some angry kid came through the administrative building and trashed the place- ripping the poster off the wall and in pieces. I should have stopped him there and asked him if I could have had it. Ok enough storytelling. This album is a great listen. I think from this type of blues, it doesn't often get much better than Muddy Waters. And for me, Delta Blues is probably my favorite sub genre and he's who I think of when I think of it.
Excellent live album, it really sounds like you're there.
A classic album, beautiful blues tunes, great background music.
Straight up, old school blues.
7.5/10
Really good.
Fun music
1960 Live Blues album Standouts: I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man, Baby Please Don't Go, I Got My Mojo Working, 4/5
Cool blues 7,5
really enjoyed this, chilled, guitar work was great
It is very influential among many genres and generations. Raw, High energy, authentic blues. Songs are quite fun and I would recommend listening, especially if you're not necessarily a heavy blues listener. This album did a good job getting me interested in the genre as well as Muddy Waters and good ol Blues.
Good to hear some early blues. Very clearly influenced lots of the music I love. Maybe I’m just a product of the times, but I love the stuff it influenced more than I love this. Great name though - he’s got a future working for a rivers charity if this whole blues thing doesn’t work out for him. 4/5
What's to say? There's really nothing not to like here if you're into rock & roll or blues at all. Ol' Muddy's a monster -- without him, basically the entire Stones/Yardbirds side of the British Invasion never happens. Surprised a little at how mellow a lot of it sounds. But it's straight pure blues. Find a chair, pour a drink, and let Muddy shuffle your sads away. Unexpected banger: Tiger in Your Tank
Плотный концертник. Блюз в самом классическом представлении. Крепкая 4, потому что я и подрыгался, и погрустил.
Incredible sound, can't imagine what the audience thought of this in 1960.
Wow. That was good. Two years old when that came out, so kinda missed it first time around.
Pretty good. Nothing super memorable though.
Very nice for sending postcards
Time space and place lens very important for this one I assume. Pretty standard blues type arrangements that would've been pretty out there for 1960
Muddy does what muddy do. You could too if yo momma named you muddy too
This is the pace my brain is constantly at
"Bitch told me I'm the goat, I set a coochie trend. I got 6 hoes on the floor, I need a coochie plan." - YN Jay "I'm gonna make you girls lead me by the hand, then the world will know the hoochie coochie man" - Muddy Waters Really delightful live album, classic 12 bar blues which gives so much space for great soloing. Otis Spann's piano work here is outstanding, so lively. Same goes for James Cotton's harmonica playing and Francis Clay's drumming. Waters' band is so good here and they really imbue a lot of these songs with life and energy. Kinda feels like the guitars are a little subdued in the mix, like unless I actively focus on them I might forget, which is maybe the point for these song structures. I have no clue what is actually meant by putting "a tiger in your tank" but I know it'll get you sent to horny jail. A whole will and testament could be written in honor of this performance of "I've Got My Mojo Workin'" but I'll spare the time. Whole set is great, so much swagger, exuberance, and confidence, I really enjoyed this.
Where Rock started. Enjoyed this more than I would have expected
Blues is one of the few genres that hasn’t evolved much over time. Veer too far from the original formula and it’s no longer blues. There are bands playing these songs at bars all over the world today, trying to replicate the energy and character that Muddy brought to them 60+ years ago. Timeless! 4.5
Excellent record. This stuff never gets old. Would have been a treat to hear him play live.
Another enjoyable live album.
Very good, this is what real music should sound like.
Man... what an important recording! Not quite to the level as that BB King, but solid!
Enjoyed this. Really like the guitar sound that he used in this and would love to see someone play like this IRL.
Needed this after the recent recommendations
Great live album. I had forgotten what a good singer Muddy Waters was.
Great blues
Enjoyed this enough and there is a mood where I really enjoy listening to the Blues so could see myself appreciating this much more in a bar with dim lighting and a nice beer.
This is a fantastic live record. Really shows off what Muddy Waters could do.
Solid blues
Live blues by the legend
Delta Blues!
Great blues!
At Newport It sounds amazing, brilliant voice, excellent band Can really understand how influential it was, mainly cos it’s just really good. I Got My Brand on You Hoochie Coochie Man Baby, Please Don’t Go - that really fizzes I Feel So Good Both the Got My Mojos Listened to it this morning while making breakfast and coffee, mmm, really cookin’ dem grits, getting dat skillet hot for dem biscuits and gravy, mmmhmmm, gonna cook me some crayfish, nice’n’hot But I genuinely really enjoyed it - think it will go in my rotation. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Blues - im Gegensatz zu Jazz - mag ich sehr gerne. Und dieses Album ist natürlich großartig, auch wenn mir im Allgemeinen Studioalben besser gefallen als Livealben.
I don't know why I didn't expect there to be blues included in this, but I was pleasantly surprised by this. I'm trying to get more into jazz and blues this year and this was a great way to continue that goal. Tiger in Your Tank was great and so was both parts of Got My Mojo Working.
Classic Muddy Waters. Love it
cruise'n down the mississippi on a old steam boat with a rock'n jazz band
A lot of classic 12 bar blues-type stuff, but gorgeously executed. Favourite tracks: I Got My Brand On You, Tiger In Your Tank, I've Got My Mojo Working (both parts; this is a jam!).
Never realized how much this inspired. Enjoyed it.
A man and a guitar throwing down for a bunch of white people. Muddy could play and this is the hits. He's wailing with a pretty good band.
Day1- how cool would it have been to be there just to see Got My Mojo Working
A great easy listen. Even though I am from the area I have never attended the Newport festivals. Tiger in Your Tank and Goodbye Newport stand out. Mellow sound and vibe overall
Nobody would disagree if I say that Muddy Waters is a legend. The man is to blues what Louis Armstrong is to jazz. This album is a testament to what he and his band of virtuosos can do in front of a borderline-violent crowd. Legend says the Newport Festival audience had gone berserk during Little Richard's concert the night before, forcing hours of police intervention. Getting on that stage must have been sick. However, Waters and his band were able to tame them all with their hypnotizing performance. Not only that, Chess, his then discography, taped the concert. The resulting record (this record) was the key to popularizing the Blues in America.
nice
Awesome!
I need to listen to more blues
Alfa blues. Tiger in your Tank is the best song. Blues clues was named after this blues.
Waters is a LEGEND of the blues scene, and this album proves why.
4/5 Some good blues!
Well recorded. Songs are too short but he probably did that on purpose as he was playing to a festival crowd and not necessarily a Muddy Waters' crowd.
Very good musically but I'm not the biggest fan of live albums
Blues seems like one of those genres you have to hear live. Oh, to be born 80 years sooner and see this show.
Not as good as "Hard Again" but still enjoyable. 3.5.
I'm thankful that this project helped me discover Muddy Waters -- I really like blues and this guy is exceptional. 4*. This hit good with mate in the morning.
It's good, but also the kind of music that is 10 times better to listen to live than on your own with a pair of headsets. If I were there in person it would be 5/5, but listening to it 60 years later is only 4/5
Nice jazzy blues. Can't go wrong with that. Good to have Muddy Waters on the radar now. 8/10
The real modrý music, reminds me of my dad.
Nice
Well how pleasant.
Nice classic blues. Doesn’t feel fake, like one Eric who claps. (ok i dont think he does that but the point still stands)
Chilled 😎
Live Blues are fun
Absolutely classic blues, truly incredible stuff
As good as blues music gets
Blues legende!
goed album, top artiest. Sick dat dit album (zo goed al) helemaal live is. En ook de stereo sound erg cool. “I’m your hoochie coochie man” kende ik al, maar dan de niet-live versie, en vind die toch wel nicer denk ik. Ik geef het album een 3,8!
Yeehaw
fun good blues
A classic blues album...live! Excellent.
If you don't like this album you don't like the blues.
I understand that this album captures an important moment in music history, considered the first live blues album. That said, I have studio versions of about 1/2 this album (from Anthology), and prefer those versions. But that’s a comparatively minor quibble, and only keeps this from edging towards a 5. This is a solid 4.
Really liked this one. The kind of album that makes you want to open a bottle of whiskey and unwind
Another genre that isn't my first pick to listen to but always enjoy when I do.
Muddy is doing great here, but I did think there was a bit of redundancy that drops the album.
Solid blues album
Sounded great. Pure musicianship
This is the blues. Rock has nothing on the real blues when it comes to soul because this is generational pain coming through in music form. That’s not meant to take away from rock, but just that we might think we know blues based music but we don’t until we hear real blues. 4/5
Very good album, good listening. Solid
I like the blues and this was a great intro to muddy waters
Great blues album and Muddy Waters influenced rock music in a big way.
Wow, plenty of songs I've heard before without knowing the source. Wonderful album
Not my usual cupnof tea but understand it's importance in music history.
So much fun. Decent quality recording, fantastic musicians, Muddy sounds great.
Classic blues by the legendary Muddy Waters... 63 6ears later and it still sounds smooth.
This album got my mojo working.
4,5. Good blues
This album is really great. You can tell they were just jamming together. Such a foundational piece for blues and rock that would follow within the next several decades.
Amazing! So funky and bluesy, the drive forward from the guitar leads the whole thing but the powerfully steady rhythm section really lets you gets sucked in, along with the live singing which makes you feel as if you’re there and seeing him.
Considered to one of the first..and best. Of the live blues concerts recorded.
Blues bangers that were ripped off by a load of filthy hippies
Old school blues
Great music
Blues🤝
Not really my strong suite. But it's really nice
I like this album (coming from someone who detests “Mannish Boy”.)
Good tunes!
Muddy Waters is obviously a classic bluesman, though Inwonder if this stands so highly above many, lesser known peers. Not to say it isn't great, it is (if you like classic blues). And deserves extra consideration for being one of a handful who truly brought the sound to the world.
i liked it. nice blues music. vibey and chill listening
Good blues. I couldn't listen to this on its own, too much blues for one sitting, but in the background it was fine
4 stars.
Loved it
Very jazzy. Not my style of music but I can appreciate the talent.
Voelt als de blauwdruk voor een blues album. Klinkt fantastisch, maar blues is gewoon niet helemaal voor mij. Wel fijn dat dit album wat vrolijker en meer uptempo voelt dan de gemiddelde bluesnummers. Favorieten: I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man, Baby Please Don't Go, I've Got My Mojo Working
As always, a joy to listen to Muddy Waters. Not as strong an album as Hard Again - which I got 9 albums ago and was an immediate save to my playlist for ever choice. But still pretty darned decent here.
finger snapping, nice and boppy
BLUES!!!! Bluest blauer als traurig-besoffene Schlümpfe
white man stole this sound and made it into rock thats a fact
Not a blues guy, put pretty decent. Has a lot of memorable songs like I’ve Got My Mojo Working, Tiger in Your Tank, and Baby Please Dont Go. The slower songs were more forgettable for myself, but if you’re a fan of classic blues you would love this album front to back.
This is over 60 years old and it still sounds so good. So influential. The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and even the Beatles owe so much to Muddy Waters. It’s a great live set and Muddy works the crowd. Harmonica playing is great. It’s so embedded in popular music it’s hard to step back and realize how important this was. Just listening purely on the merits of the sound, it doesn’t create in me an urge to listen to it frequently, but when I do rediscover it I am reminded of the power of the blues.
A classic bluesy album. Brought me back to my Muddy Waters obsession from college.
4.5
Love Muddy Waters and Chicago blues in general. I don't care for live recordings otherwise this would be a lot closer to a 5/5.
I have never given the blues much attention. Maybe it because the previous 2 albums were torture, but I was surprised how much I enjoyed this album. I have been listening to the blues genre for the last couple days now and need to add some of this to my back patio beers and smoke times. From start to finish all good songs and music. Great harmonica throughout. Just a solid album and live is bonus. I wish I had the opportunity to see in person. Favorites - I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man and I've Got My Mojo Working. 4
Classic Blues. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Pretty good blues.A but generic but it has a good energy.
For a live recording from 1960 I am a little shocked at how great this sounds, even today some live music festival recordings don't sound this good it's a genuine surprise.
it definitely got my brbrbrbrojo workin. wish i studied more blues instead of classical in school. i prefer the live versions. fav songs: i got my brand on you, baby please dont go, tiger in your tank, ive got my mojo working (and Pt.2), goodbye newport blues.
What a live album absolutely flawless performance
Jazzy, great vocal cadence.
I got my mojo workin! *Bbbbbbbbbb* I got my mojo WORKIN!
Great album, though a few tracks repeat if anything I think it adds to the charm.
A highly enjoyable live record by blues legend Muddy Waters. You can hear why is this so influental, it inspiried so many bands in the 60s an 70s after it was released in 1960. Great stuff.
Wonderful live blues album. Muddy Waters is not my favorite blues musician, but there is no doubt he is a true source of inspiration for the genre.
Was pleasantly surprised as I usually don’t like live albums. Love Muddy Waters and this is no exception.
I got my brand on you: classic blues, the piano goes hard and so does the harmonica I'm youre hoochie coochie man: feels like I'm in a jazz club. Love it Baby, please don't go: Soon forgotten Tiger in your tank: this songbwould sp much fun to play and solo on top of. Love the pase and energy. Usually songs like these last few feel repetitive cause he keeps repeating the vocals, but for me it feels more like he's just singing the blues sounds and the words come second. Similar to "salt peanut". The rythm is salt peanut, so we add the words for the crowd, but for sure the rythm was written first I feel so good I've got my mojo working Got my mojo working pt2: my man put a little extra soul into this one👏👏, very nice Goodbye Newport blues: This was really good classic blues. 4 stars. Would be happy to hear this live and on my Playlists, good vibes for sure
It was a perfect album for a cookout 🙏
Excellent recording and enjoyable performance by Muddy. “Soon Forgotten” is a good one. 3.5
this is a genuine blues album that hits all the right spots I think. it has some nice slow jams in there with some real high energy stuff without losing the blue feel. 'Got My Mojo Working pt 2' really sealed the deal with this one i think.
-things to know about me? i love a live album -i LOVE his voice -the bits where he speaks at the end of the songs is lovely and fab -favorites: baby please don’t go, i got my mojo working, meanest woman -always have loved this type of music, but this album isn’t my favorite of them
It's amazing how all of Muddy Waters songs sound the same, with that familiar blues riff and vocal, poetic cadence, but how this album is so good. Great recording on a live album from 63 years ago, too. Muddy is steady on the guitar, and I can see how he influenced so many who came after him. Solid live album.
Great sounding recording. New songs at the time and old ones. Voice sounded great.
Really liked, vibrant and high energy. Fave track was 'I put a tiger in your tank' 🐯 could imagine dancing to this!
Simple but strong. Sounds like a blast, I reckon everyone must wish they were in the room with an instrument, even a tambourine, just to get involved. Or just me? Standout track: I've got my mojo working
Solid album - good vibes
Good stuff and foundational, just older and the instrumentation could be a little more diverse
Liked the style
Pretty good jazz album, first live recorded jazz album
ALBUM RATING: 3.6 ALBUM GRADE: B- TRACK RATINGS: 1. I Got My Brand on You - 3.5 2. I’m Your Hooch Koochie Man - 3.5 3. Baby, Please Don’t Go - 4.0 4. Soon Forgotten - 4.0 5. Tiger in Your Tank - 3.0 6. I Feel So Good - 3.5 7. Got My Mojo Working - 3.5 8. Got My Mojo Working, Pt. 2 - 3.5 9. Goodbye Newport Blues - 4.0
Amazing live performance. Sounds great. Great energy. I even looked it up on YouTube and watched a little bit there. I knew the name but not the music. So happy this was on the list
4.25
This is pretty great. Not sure there were any individual standouts but I'd listen to this over and over again. I don't really understand the point of live albums but that's my only knock on this one.
Cool to hear the evolution of music through this record. You can tell what sounds somewhat basic now was really groundbreaking and set the stage for rock and pop to come.
Classic. Tunes that shaped some of todays best music.
Technically impressive in terms of sound quality and influence. It sounds as good as a studio album ten years down the line. Pretty enjoyable, and nothing to dislike, but nothing that grabbed me. A live album creates a unique atmosphere though. 17/04/23
Classic blues album 3.5
One of the all time best with a great live set
Classic Blues, a raw, live performance from the great Muddy Waters! Authentic American blues that obviously had an influence on the British hard rock bands of the late 60's/early 70's such as Zeppelin, Yardbirds, Fleetwood Mac, the Stones, Hendrix...etc . Put aside your Clapton records and give this a listen, this is the real deal!
8.5/10. muy bueno, canta perfect en todas las canciones.
Love muddy waters. Great music, amazing vocals and just an awesome album (fortunately in good quality despite being a live album)
Can definitely hear how this album and artist influenced so many future guitarists. I've Got My Mojo Working is a standout.
This swings. I'm not often in the mood for blues, but this goes on my list for when I am.
That mojo he got working sure does work on me. Just a landmark, a legend at the peak of his powers.
Muddy Waters is altijd goed! Mooie nummers die lekker klinken.
amazing…so beautiful.
Tämän tälläsen juurevamman tavaran kohdalla tuo live ei haittaa yhtään. Onhan tämä toki luonteeltaan aika tällainen best of -kokoelma. Muddy on väkevä 4/5
Kerrankin keikkalevy, josta tulee semmonen fiilis, että olispa ollu siistiä olla tuolla. Kova meno! 4/5
Pretty cool hearing how riled up the crowd got by Pt. 2 of Mojo. Goodbye Newport Blues is very obviously an inspiration for Zeppelin. Powerful vocals.
Very full sound and nice groove. Flagship 60s stuff right there!
This was cool. Pretty wild to imagine seeing muddy waters play hoochie coochie
This is a really good live album. I'm not a big blues guy but Muddy Waters is pretty undeniable. These are just such catchy, fun songs. Standout Tracks: I Got My Brand On You, I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man, Baby Please Don't Go, Tiger In Your Tank, I Feel So Good, I've Got My Mojo Working, Meanest Woman
Interesting that this is where so influential. I really wish I were better versed in jazz and blues and could pick out what is markedly important here. In the year 2023, it feels very repetitive. Amazing how the set builds throughout. I like "I've Got My Mojo Working." Very straightforward baselines (standard 12 bar bum ba bam bum), not very complex guitar work. I like the vocal.
Presentado en el festival de Jazz de Newport, es un álbum de Chicago Blues que constantemente es aclamado como uno de los mejores de la historia. Personalmente no escucho ni había escuchado Blues nunca, pero me gustó mucho; tienen una energía diferente…
What a great blues album. Loved the whole thing!
I love Muddy Waters! His clear yet rough vocals I enjoy and there’s small moments throughout that stand out in a powerful blues album.
Good album. Gets a bit repetitive at times but that's fine. Got my mojo watching is the best song on the album. I WANNA PUT A TIGER IN YOUR TANK
Usually find blues boring, but this was superb. Had me going all the way through.
Prima. Bluesy, luistert lekker weg, lekker muziek maken. Gewoon goed.
quality
HL: "Tiger in Your Tank", "I Got My Brand On You", "I Feel So Good", "Hoochie Coochie Man" Picks up speed like a rollercoaster, then ends on a downbeat "Newport Blues". No sifting through layers with this album, just some good blues vibes. Hard for me to listen to Muddy Waters without imagining Plant/Page or Jagger/Richards prowling nearby with hungry looks in their eyes. January 10, 2023
Classic
absolutely fab, would play in the background of a fancy dinner party im hosting anyday :)
I definitely like me some Muddy Waters, but with the non-live bonus tracks attached to this live album (depending on the version, I guess) it's a good demonstration of how much more I would've enjoyed a collection of non-live version of the same songs. To me the additional "energy" simply doesn't make up for the massive reduction in sound quality or additional possibilities provided by sound engineering. 3.5 stars rounded down for just the live version, 5 stars for the non-live bonus tracks.
Extremely classic blues
Classic
I haven't really listened to much blues before this album, but I really feel like I should listen to more. You can hear the sounds that influenced so many other bands, and it's a fun album all the way through, even the softer songs are just really rock solid. Muddy's voice rings loud and clear throughout all the songs but never seems to drown out the rest of the band, and he seems so cool throughout the entire performance. It's a very high quality recording as well for how old it is. I like this album a lot. Favorite Tracks: Tiger In Your Tank, I Feel So Good, Got My Mojo Working Pt. 2, Goodbye Newport Blues
great album; "I've Got My Mojo Working" really gets it going. Part of the lyrics in "Soon Forgotten" are "The 12th of April in 1951". That's a long, long time ago.
there haven't been many blues albums on this list, but that means the albums that do make the cut have something extra about them. well, this live album performed by muddy waters is something special. the audience in 1960 maybe wasn't as vocally loud as other live albums here, but their excitement in their clapping and call-and-response is evident. while waters' voice isn't as clear due to quality, his joy of singing is infectious. waters is a common influence among the most popular rock and roll musicians, so much so that he's frequently listed as an influence for those inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame in addition to be inducted himself as an early influence in 1987. listening to this album, when i hadn't listened to much of waters beforehand, made this clear to me. several of these songs written by waters have been covered and have become concert staples for other artists. the peppy riffs in "i'm your hoochie coochie man" are early rock if i've ever heard it!
Not my typical type of music but enjoyed it
1960?! Wow. And you tell me that was all live? Impressive. Really chill and jazzy composition.
This is a really pleasant listen
non me ne intendo di jazz, ma è ok
Great singing, great voice, nice tunes. Enjoyed every track. Music wasn't impactful to me like that, but was fun still.
The genuine article – it doesn't get much simpler, direct or better than this. The voice is an instrument in itself – dark, deep and resonant – which he uses to great effect with the incantatory phrasings. One loves the big noise from the small combo, and the free bashing of the drummer. The hideously overused word icon certainly applies here, and to this landmark recording. The mojo was working and continues to work. Biggest issue is that it's not long enough but one is certainly not anxious to begrudge MW a relatively brief workday.
Blues in its truest electric form. The man who “invented electricity”. All of this sounds so basic now, but all these decades later, it still kicks with some passion and emotion.
Classic blues album, really enjoyed the listen. Lyrics were really good and top notch blues guitar
Imagine being in the audience, slowly warming up to Water’s charismatic performance until you’re out on the dance floor having the time of your life. As a jazz & blues newbie I can’t say whether this is a good intro point to Muddy Water’s music or to blues in general, but I enjoyed it so much that it’s on regular rotation since I got it last Friday.
Love blues
I like the jazz and vocals.
Muddy!
I was able to listen to most of the album. Really enjoyed this one.
chillen op de titanic
Ik moet echt eens alle live blues classics beluisteren. Deze was al top!
One of my favorite albums of all time
Great and bluesy
Great blues, great guitar.
7/10. I spent a while trying to figure out what a "taggle" was, and why you'd put it in someone's tank before I saw the name of the song.
Yeah that’s definitely the blues. 8/10
Not a mahusive blues fan but this really is very good. Full of filthy innuendo all the way with a top-notch live band. Everything is tight and concise with tons of blues personality from Muddy.
Sick set.
Straight blues. I liked the driving feel. Not too bad.
I like jazz so this was a good album!
Just a solid blues album. I always enjoy when you can hear the crowd, especially in blues recordings. Super fun. Favorite tracks: "Got My Mojo Working Part 1", "Baby, Please Don't Go"
Lovely
good album.
If it happened at Newport Jazz festival in the 50's/60's chances are it probably slap'd. 4.5/5
Classic blues.
That's a great performance - captured so well - and great musicianship
Had heard a couple tracks by him before but never dove deeper. Not really the sort of thing i would have normally sought out, but I'm quite pleased i took the time to listen. Good stuff.
